Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our objective was to determine if treatment with pravastatin prevents preeclampsia in pregnant patients at risk of preeclampsia. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was performed in four major tertiary hospitals in Surabaya, Bandung, and Makassar between 2017 and 2021. Pregnant women at high risk of developing preeclampsia were recruited and randomized into an intervention group and control group. The control group received low-dose aspirin (80 mg) and calcium (1 g) daily, while the intervention group received additional pravastatin (20 mg twice daily) starting from 14 to 20 weeks' gestation until delivery. The pregnancy was followed until delivery, and the clinical data were collected. The primary outcome was the occurrence of preeclampsia. RESULT A total of 173 people participated in this study, including 86 in the control group and 87 in the pravastatin group. The pravastatin group had a significantly lower rate of preterm preeclampsia (13.8 vs. 26.7%; p = 0.034; odds ratio [OR] = 0.034, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.202-0.905) and preterm birth (16.1 vs. 36%; p = 0.003; OR = 0.340, 95% CI = 0.165-0.7), mostly indicated preterm birth. Preeclampsia occurred later in the pravastatin group than in the control group (36.39 + 2.32 vs. 34.89 + 3.38 weeks, p = 0.048). Overall, the pravastatin group showed better perinatal outcomes. Neonates with low Apgar scores (<7) at 1 minute (5.7 vs. 25.6%, p = 0.000) and 5 minutes (2.3 vs. 25.6%, p = 0.028) were significantly less common in the pravastatin group. Additionally, the rate of low birthweight babies (<2,500 g) was lower in the pravastatin group (27.6 vs. 40.7%; p = 0.069). CONCLUSION Pravastatin (20 mg bid) significantly reduces the risk of preterm preeclampsia and preterm birth in women at a high risk of developing preeclampsia. Abstract
Background Connective tissue disorders encompass a diverse array of autoimmune and hereditary conditions, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. These disorders present unique challenges during pregnancy due to their complex pathophysiology and potential complications. Understanding their impact on pregnancy outcomes is vital for optimizing maternal and fetal health. Objective To investigate the burden, complications, maternal and fetal outcomes, and prognosis of connective tissue disorders in pregnancy. Methods The study was conducted over one year and six months at Saveetha Medical College and Hospital, Chennai, India, involving 45 pregnant women diagnosed with connective tissue disorders. Standard antenatal investigations were conducted, and participants were monitored throughout the antenatal period. Maternal and fetal outcomes were meticulously evaluated. Results Baseline characteristics revealed a heterogeneous distribution of age and parity among participants, reflecting the diverse nature of connective tissue disorders in pregnancy. Maternal medical outcomes, such as gestational hypertension (GHTN) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), were prevalent, highlighting the necessity of close monitoring. Obstetric outcomes included spontaneous abortion and preterm delivery, indicating elevated risks in this population. Fetal outcomes, including fetal growth restriction and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit, underscored the impact of these disorders on fetal health. Conclusion This study examines pregnant connective tissue disorder burden, complications, maternal and fetal outcomes, and prognosis. The complicated relationship between these illnesses, and pregnancy requires specialist care and close monitoring. The participants' baseline features represent connective tissue condition heterogeneity, affecting clinical practice. Among the study subjects, 40% had RA and 20% had SLE, the most common connective tissue illness. Adverse maternal medical outcomes, like GHTN (27.27% of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) patients and 22.22% of SLE patients) and GDM (18.18% of APS patients and 11.11% of SLE patients), highlight the need for close maternal health monitoring and management during pregnancy. Overall, this study sheds light on connective tissue abnormalities and pregnancy outcomes. Healthcare providers can improve reproductive health and well-being for various illnesses by knowing these relationships.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the applicability of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) interim guidelines for twin pregnancies to the specific population of gestational diabetes mellitus by exploring the relationship between gestational weight gain and adverse pregnancy outcomes in Chinese twin-pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus. STUDY DESIGN This was a retrospective cohort study of women diagnosed with diabetes in pregnancy between July 2017 and December 2020 at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Chongqing, China. The primary variable of interest was maternal total gestational weight gain. The primary outcomes were perinatal outcomes, which included: preeclampsia, small for gestational age, large for gestational age, low birth weight, neonatal pneumonia, neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, and neonatal intensive unit admission, etc. The association between inappropriate gestational weight gain and adverse pregnancy outcomes was estimated using multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 455 twin-pregnant women who had gestational diabetes mellitus were analyzed. Women with low gestational weight gain had reduced risk of preeclampsia (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.32; 95% CI or confidence interval, 0.17-0.63; p = 0.001) and their infants had higher risks of small for gestational age (aOR, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.04-3.58; p = 0.037), low birth weight (aOR, 2.27; 95% CI, 1.32-3.90; p = 0.003), neonatal intensive unit admission (aOR, 3.29; 95% CI, 1.10-5.78; p = 0.038), pneumonia (aOR, 2.41; 95% CI, 1.08-5.33; p = 0.031), and neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (aOR, 2.29; 95% CI, 1.10-4.78; p = 0.027); the infants of women with excessive gestational weight gain had a higher risk of large for gestational age (aOR, 3.76; 95% CI, 1.42-9.96; p = 0.008). CONCLUSION Gestational weight gain controlled within the range recommended by the NAM could reduce the risk of perinatal adverse outcomes. The 2009 NAM gestational weight gain recommendations can be used for Chinese twin-pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pravastatin to prevent preeclampsia (PE) in pregnant women at a high risk of developing PE and the maternal and perinatal outcomes and the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1/placental growth factor (sFlt1/PlGF) ratio. STUDY DESIGN This is an open-labeled randomized controlled trial (RCT), a part of INOVASIA (Indonesia Pravastatin to Prevent Preeclampsia study) trial. Pregnant women at a high risk of developing PE were recruited and randomized into an intervention group (40) and a control group (40). The inclusion criteria consisted of pregnant women with positive clinical risk factor and abnormal uterine artery Doppler examination at 10 to 20 weeks' gestational age. The control group received low dose aspirin (80 mg/day) and calcium (1 g/day), while the intervention group received additional pravastatin (20-mg twice daily) starting from 14 to 20 weeks' gestation until delivery. Research blood samples were collected before the first dose of pravastatin and before delivery. The main outcome was the rate of maternal PE, maternal-perinatal outcomes, and sFlt-1, PlGF, sFlt-1/PlGF ratio, and soluble endoglin (sEng) levels. RESULTS The rate of PE was (nonsignificantly) lower in the pravastatin group compared with the control group (17.5 vs. 35%). The pravastatin group also had a (nonsignificant) lower rate of severe PE, HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets) syndrome, acute kidney injury, and severe hypertension. The rate of (iatrogenic) preterm delivery was significantly (p = 0.048) lower in the pravastatin group (n = 4) compared with the controls (n = 12). Neonates in the pravastatin group had significantly higher birth weights (2,931 ± 537 vs. 2,625 ± 872 g; p = 0.006), lower Apgar's scores < 7 (2.5 vs. 27.5%, p = 0.002), composite neonatal morbidity (0 vs. 20%, p = 0.005), and NICU admission rates (0 vs. 15%, p = 0.026). All biomarkers show a significant deterioration in the control group compared with nonsignificant changes in the pravastatin group. CONCLUSION Pravastatin holds promise in the secondary prevention of PE and placenta-mediated adverse perinatal outcomes by improving the angiogenic imbalance. Abstract
Asthma and allergic disorders are common in childhood with genetic and environmental determinants of disease that include prenatal nutritional exposures such as long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants. Global climate change is implicated in asthma and allergic disorder morbidity with potential mechanisms including perturbations of ecosystems. There is support that environmental and climatic changes such as increasing global temperate and carbon dioxide levels affect aquatic and agricultural ecosystems with subsequent alterations in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid availability and nutrient quality and antioxidant capacity of certain crops, respectively. This article discusses asthma epidemiology and the influence of global climate change.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of reduced early-pregnancy activated partial thrombin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT), and international standardized ratio (INR) on the risk of preeclampsia. A total of 8549 pregnant women with singleton births were included. Early pregnancy APTT, PT, and INR levels, with age, birth, prepregnancy body mass index, fibrinogen (FBG), thrombin time (TT), D-dimer (DD2), antithrombin III (ATIII), fibrin degradation products (FDP) as confounders, generalized linear model of APTT, the relative risk of PT and INR when INR reduction. After adequate adjustment for confounders, the relative risk of preeclampsia was 0.703 for every 1 s increase in plasma PT results in early pregnancy, and for every 0.1 increase in plasma INR results, the relative risk of preeclampsia was 0.767. With a PT less than the P25 quantile (<11 s), the relative risk of preeclampsia was 1.328. The relative risk of preeclampsia at an INR less than the P25 quantile (<0.92) was 1.24. There was no statistical association between APTT on the risk of preeclampsia. The relative risk of preeclampsia is strongly associated with a decrease in PT and INR in early pregnancy. PT and INR in early pregnancy were a potential marker in the risk stratification of preeclampsia. Focusing on reduced PT and INR levels in early pregnancy can help to identify early pregnancies at risk for preeclampsia.

Abstract
Leptin plays a crucial role in regulating energy homoeostasis, neuroendocrine function, metabolism, and immune and inflammatory responses. The adipose tissue is a main source of leptin, but during pregnancy, leptin is also secreted primarily by the placenta. Circulating leptin levels peak during the second trimester of human pregnancy and fall after labor. Several studies indicated a strong association between elevated placental leptin levels and preeclampsia (PE) pathogenesis and elevated serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in PE patients. Therefore, we hypothesized that a local increase in placental leptin production induces IL-6 production in Hofbauer cells (HBCs) to contribute to PE-associated inflammation. We first investigated HBCs-specific IL-6 and leptin receptor (LEPR) expression and compared their immunoreactivity in PE vs. gestational age-matched control placentas. Subsequently, we examined the in vitro regulation of IL-6 as well as the phosphorylation levels of intracellular signaling proteins STAT3, STAT5, NF-κB, and ERK1/2 by increasing recombinant human leptin concentrations (10 to 1000 ng/mL) in primary cultured HBCs. Lastly, HBC cultures were incubated with leptin ± specific inhibitors of STAT3 or STAT5, or p65 NF-κB or ERK1/2 MAPK signaling cascades to determine relevant cascade(s) involved in leptin-mediated IL-6 regulation. Immunohistochemistry revealed ~three- and ~five-fold increases in IL-6 and LEPR expression, respectively, in HBCs from PE placentas. In vitro analysis indicated that leptin treatment in HBCs stimulate IL-6 in a concentration-dependent manner both at the transcriptional and secretory levels (p < 0.05). Moreover, leptin-treated HBC cultures displayed significantly increased phosphorylation levels of STAT5, p65 NF-κB, and ERK1/2 MAPK and pre-incubation of HBCs with a specific ERK1/2 MAPK inhibitor blocked leptin-induced IL-6 expression. Our in situ results show that HBCs contribute to the pathogenesis of PE by elevating IL-6 expression, and in vitro results indicate that induction of IL-6 expression in HBCs is primarily leptin-mediated. While HBCs display an anti-inflammatory phenotype in normal placentas, elevated levels of leptin may transform HBCs into a pro-inflammatory phenotype by activating ERK1/2 MAPK to augment IL-6 expression.

Abstract
This review pooled data from the literature to examine the association between preeclampsia (PE) and subsequent risk of breast cancer in women. Cohort studies published in the databases of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science up to 18 July 2023 were searched. Adjusted data were pooled to obtain the risk ratio (RR). Eleven studies with 15 cohorts and a cumulative sample size of 7,838,693 women were included. Meta-analysis of all studies demonstrated a reduced risk of breast cancer in women with PE as compared to those without PE (RR: 0.89 95% CI: 0.83, 0.95 p < 0.001 I2 = 50%). Follow-up ranged from 8 to 29.2 years. Results did not change during sensitivity analysis. Outcomes varied on subgroup analysis based on location, study type, data extraction method, incidence of breast cancer, and follow-up. To conclude, women with PE may have a reduced risk of breast cancer later in life. However, the risk reduction is minimal and may not have much clinical significance. The evidence is also limited by high inter-study heterogeneity and lack of adjustment of all possible confounders.

Abstract
Pregnancy involves an interplay between maternal and fetal factors affecting changes to maternal anatomy and physiology to support the developing fetus and ensure the well-being of both the mother and offspring. A century of research has provided evidence of the imperative role of the placenta in the development of preeclampsia. Recently, a growing body of evidence has supported the adaptations of the maternal cardiovascular system during normal pregnancy and its maladaptation in preeclampsia. Debate surrounds the roles of the placenta vs the maternal cardiovascular system in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. We proposed an integrated model of the maternal cardiac-placental-fetal array and the development of preeclampsia, which reconciles the disease phenotypes and their proposed origins, whether placenta-dominant or maternal cardiovascular system-dominant. These phenotypes are sufficiently diverse to define 2 distinct types: preeclampsia Type I and Type II. Type I preeclampsia may present earlier, characterized by placental dysfunction or malperfusion, shallow trophoblast invasion, inadequate spiral artery conversion, profound syncytiotrophoblast stress, elevated soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 levels, reduced placental growth factor levels, high peripheral vascular resistance, and low cardiac output. Type I is more often accompanied by fetal growth restriction, and low placental growth factor levels have a measurable impact on maternal cardiac remodeling and function. Type II preeclampsia typically occurs in the later stages of pregnancy and entails an evolving maternal cardiovascular intolerance to the demands of pregnancy, with a moderately dysfunctional placenta and inadequate blood supply. The soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1-placental growth factor ratio may be normal or slightly disturbed, peripheral vascular resistance is low, and cardiac output is high, but these adaptations still fail to meet demand. Emergent placental dysfunction, coupled with an increasing inability to meet demand, more often appears with fetal macrosomia, multiple pregnancies, or prolonged pregnancy. Support for the notion of 2 types of preeclampsia observable on the molecular level is provided by single-cell transcriptomic survey of gene expression patterns across different cell classes. This revealed widespread dysregulation of gene expression across all cell types, and significant imbalance in fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (FLT1) and placental growth factor, particularly marked in the syncytium of early preeclampsia cases. Classification of preeclampsia into Type I and Type II can inform future research to develop targeted screening, prevention, and treatment approaches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to further explore the role of angiogenic vs anti-angiogenic factors in placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). METHODS This cohort study included all patients with placenta previa and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorders undergoing surgery at Dr. Soetomo Hospital (Academic Hospital of Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia) from May to September 2021. Venous blood samples for PLGF and sFlt-1 were drawn immediately prior to surgery. Placental tissue samples were taken during surgery. The FIGO grading was diagnosed intraoperatively by an experienced surgeon and confirmed by the pathologist and followed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. The sFlt-1 and PLGF serum were performed by an independent laboratory technician. RESULTS Sixty women were included in this study (20 women with placenta previa; 10 women with FIGO PAS grade 1; 8 women with FIGO PAS grade 2; 22 women with FIGO PAS grade 3). The median with 95% Confidence interval of PLGF serum values in placenta previa, FIGO grade I, grade II, and grade III were 233.68 (0.00-2434.00), 124.39 (10.42-663.68), 236.89 (18.83-418.99) and 237.31 (2.26-3101.00) (p = .736); the median values with 95% CI of serum sFlt-1 levels in placenta previa, FIGO grade I, grade II, and grade III were 2816.50 (418.00-12925.00), 2506.00 (227.50-16104.00), 2494.50 (888.52-20812.00), and 1601.00 (662.16-9574.00) (p = .037). Placental PLGF expression in placenta previa, FIGO grade 1, grade II, and grade III showed median values (with 95% CI) of 4.00 (1.00-9.00), 4.00 (2.00-9.00), 4.00 (4.00-9.00), and 6.00 (2.00-9.00) (p = .001); sFlt-1 expression median values (with 95% CI) were 6.00 (2.00-9.00), 6.00 (2.00-9.00), 4.00 (1.00-9.00), and 4.00 (1.00-9.00) (p = .004). Serum PLGF and sFlt-1 levels did not correlate with placental tissue expression (p = .228; p = .586). CONCLUSION There are differences in PAS's angiogenic processes according to the severity of trophoblast cell invasion. But there is no overall correlation between serum levels and PLGF and sFlt-1 expression in the placenta, suggesting the imbalance between angiogenic and anti-angiogenic are local mechanisms in the placental and the uterine wall.

Abstract
Endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO)-induced vasodilation is impaired in pregnancy hypertension. However, the role of perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT)-derived hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as an alternative for counteracting vascular dysfunction, is incompletely clear in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Therefore, PVAT-derived H2S-induced vasodilation was investigated in pregnancy hypertension-induced endothelial dysfunction. Non-pregnant (Non-Preg) and pregnant (Preg) rats were submitted (or not) to the deoxycorticosterone (DOCA)-salt protocol and assigned as follows (n = 10/group): Non-Preg, Non-Preg+DOCA, Preg, and Preg+DOCA groups. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), angiogenesis-related factors, determinant levels of H2S (PbS), NO (NOx), and oxidative stress (MDA) were assessed. Vascular changes were recorded in thoracic aortas with PVAT and endothelium (intact and removed layers). Vasorelaxation responses to the substrate (L-cysteine) for the H2S-producing enzyme cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE) were examined in the absence and presence of CSE-inhibitor DL-propargylglycine (PAG) in thoracic aorta rings pre-incubated with cofactor for CSE (pyridoxal-5 phosphate: PLP) and pre-contracted with phenylephrine. Hypertension was only found in the Preg+DOCA group. Preg+DOCA rats showed angiogenic imbalances and increased levels of MDA. PbS, but not NOx, showed increased levels in the Preg+DOCA group. Pre-incubation with PLP and L-cysteine elevated determinants of H2S in PVAT and placentas of Preg-DOCA rats, whereas no changes were found in the aortas without PVAT. Aortas of Preg-DOCA rats showed that PVAT-derived H2S-dependent vasodilation was greater compared to endothelium-derived H2S, whereas PAG blocked these responses. PVAT-derived H2S endogenously stimulated with the amino acid L-cysteine may be an alternative to induce vasorelaxation in endothelial dysfunction related to pregnancy hypertension.

Abstract
The significance of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of male reproductive processes has been closely studied in the last two decades. Recently, it has become clear that oxidative stress can lead to numerous pathological conditions during female reproductive processes as well, contributing to the development of endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome and various forms of infertility. During pregnancy, physiological generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) occurs in association with several developmental processes including oocyte maturation and implantation. An overproduction of ROS can lead to disturbances in fetal development and increases the risk for missed abortion, intrauterine growth restriction, pre-eclampsia, premature delivery and gestational diabetes. Our review focuses on the etiological role of the disrupted oxidant-antioxidant system during human gestation as it relates to adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
Serpin E1/PAI-1, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NTpro-BNP) and neuropilin-1 are markers which have been associated with endothelial dysfunction. However, data on the levels of these markers in PE is limited. The limited data on the pathophysiology of PE in relation to these markers necessitated the study. This was a multicentre case-control study conducted at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital and the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. Out of 520 consenting pregnant women, 127 pregnant women met the inclusion criteria (53 with PE and 74 controls) and were included in this study. Venous, placental, cord and peripheral blood were collected for biomarker assay, haematological parameters and placental parasite determination. Placental tissue sections were obtained for placental malaria and histopathological lesions associated with hypoperfusion. Maternal heart rate and foetal umbilical artery Doppler impedance indices; resistance index (RI) and systolic diastolic (SD) ratio were determined to confirm utero-placental hypoperfusion. Significantly higher proportions of foeto-maternal complications; eclampsia, low birth weight (LBW), neonatal intensive care unit admissions (NICU), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), caesarian deliveries and early gestational age at delivery were associated with PE. Women with PE had lower concentrations of platelet (p = 0.02) whereas red cell distribution width (RDW) was markedly elevated (p = 0.01). NTPro-BNP concentration was markedly elevated (p = 0.01) in women with PE whereas neuropilin-1 concentration was lower (p = 0.03) compared to the non-PE group. Maternal heart rate was elevated in women with PE and Doppler resistance indices (RI and SD) were significantly elevated in foetuses of PE women than foetuses of the controls. Placental mal-perfusion lesions were higher in women with PE compared to the non-PE group. Women with PE had increased risk of adverse foeto-maternal complications, significantly associated with placental mal-perfusion lesions, had reduced platelet concentration and elevated RDW-CV levels. NTPro-BNP, RI and SD are elevated in women with PE whereas neuropilin-1 concentration is reduced. Significant changes in these pathological variables in PE women is indicative of significant derangement in endothelial function culminating in adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnancy.

Abstract
Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is characterized by venous or arterial thrombosis and/or adverse pregnancy outcome in the presence of persistent laboratory evidence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs). Preeclampsia complicates about 10-17% of pregnancies with APS. However, only early onset preeclampsia (<34 weeks of gestation) belongs to the clinical criteria of APS. The similarities in the pathophysiology of early onset preeclampsia and APS emphasize an association of these two syndromes. Overall, both are the result of a defective trophoblast invasion and decidual transformation at early gestation. Women with APS are at increased risk for prematurity; the reasons are mostly iatrogenic due to placental dysfunction, such as preeclampsia or FGR. Interestingly, women with APS have also an increased risk for preterm delivery, even in the absence of FGR and preeclampsia, and therefore it is not indicated but spontaneous. The basic treatment of APS in pregnancy is low-dose aspirin and low-molecular-weight heparin. Nevertheless, up to 20-30% of women develop complications at early and late gestation, despite basic treatment. Several additional treatment options have been proposed, with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) being one of the most efficient. Additionally, nutritional interventions, such as intake of vitamin D, have shown promising beneficial effects. Curcumin, due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, might be considered as an additional intervention as well.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is a serious complication of pregnancy with a pathogenesis that is not fully understood, though it involves the impaired invasion of extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) into the decidual layer during implantation. Because the risk of PE is actually decreased by cigarette smoking, we considered the possibility that nicotine, a critical component of tobacco smoke, might protect against PE by modifying the content of exosomes from EVTs. We investigated the effects of nicotine on our PE model mouse and evaluated blood pressure. Next, exosomes were extracted from nicotine-treated extravillous trophoblasts (HTR-8/SVneo), and the peptide samples were evaluated by DIA (Data Independent Acquisition) proteomic analysis following nano LC-MS/MS. Hub proteins were identified using bioinformatic analysis. We found that nicotine significantly reduced blood pressure in a PE mouse model. Furthermore, we identified many proteins whose abundance in exosomes was modified by nicotine treatment of EVTs, and we used bioinformatic annotation and network analysis to select five key hub proteins with potential roles in the pathogenesis or prevention of PE. EVT-derived exosomes might influence the pathogenesis of PE because the cargo delivered by exosomes can signal to and modify the receiving cells and their environment.

Abstract
Normal pregnancy is a hypercoagulable state with an increase in coagulation factor levels and a decrease in natural anticoagulation. However, a higher hypercoagulable state with prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT), increased D-dimer, and mean platelet volume is seen in women with preeclampsia at the time of onset. In addition, endothelial dysfunction occurs before the clinical symptoms of preeclampsia. Therefore, we undertook this study to investigate the coagulation profile in the first trimester in women who developed preeclampsia later. A total of 853 pregnant women with singleton births at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University between January 2021 and December 2021 were included in this case-control study. In the comparison with the controls (n = 531), the mean value of D-dimer, APTT, thrombin time (TT), antithrombin (AT)), and fibrin degradation products (FDP) was significantly lower in preeclamptic women at the time of diagnosis (n = 322). The changes in the coagulation profile were not associated with the severity or the time of onset. The reduced values of D-dimer, AT, and FDP, and increased values of TT were also observed in the first trimester in women who developed preeclampsia later and were not associated with the severity, or the time of onset of preeclampsia. After adjusting for maternal age and BMI, the values of D-dimer and AT in the first trimester were correlated to the risk of developing preeclampsia. Our findings suggest that there is an abnormal maternal response to the hemostatic system in early gestational age in women who developed preeclampsia later and measuring the coagulation profile could be an additional predictive marker of preeclampsia.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Inadequate trophoblasts migration and invasion is considered as an initial event resulting in preeclampsia, which is closely related to oxidative stress. Berberine hydrochloride (BBR), extracted from the traditional medicinal plant Coptis chinensis Franch., exerts a diversity of pharmacological effects, and the crude drug has been widely taken by most Chinese women to treat nausea and vomit during pregnancy. But there is no research regarding its effects on trophoblast cell function. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to investigate the effect of BBR on human-trophoblast-derived cell line (HTR-8/SVneo) migration ability and its mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cell viability was detected by CCK-8 assay. The effect of BBR on cells migration function was examined by scratch wound healing assay and transwell migration assay. Intracellular nitric oxide (NO), superoxide (O2-) and peroxynitrite (ONOO-) levels were measured by flow cytometry. The expression levels of inducible NO synthase (iNOS), eNOS, p-eNOS, MnSOD, CuZnSOD, Rac1, NOX1, TLR4, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), p-NFκB, pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6) in cells were analyzed by Western blotting. Uric acid sodium salt (UA), the scavenger of ONOO-, PEG-SOD (a specific superoxide scavenger), L-NAME (a NOS inhibitor) and antioxidants (Vit E and DFO) were further used to characterize the pathway of BBR action. RESULTS 5 μM BBR decreased both the migration distance and the number of migrated cells without affecting cells viability in HTR-8/SVneo cells after 24 h treatment. BBR could increase the level of NO in HTR-8/SVneo cells, and the over-production of NO might be attributable to iNOS, but not eNOS. BBR could increase intracellular O2- levels, and the over-production of O2- is closely related with Rac1 in HTR-8/SVneo cells. The excessive production of NO and O2- further react to form ONOO-, and the increased ONOO- level induced by BBR was blunted by UA. Moreover, UA improved the impaired migration function caused by BBR in HTR-8/SVneo cells. The depressed migration function stimulated by BBR in HTR-8/SVneo cells was diminished by PEG-SOD and L-NAME. Furthermore, BBR increased the expression of IL-6 in HTR-8/SVneo cells, and antioxidants (Vit E and DFO) could decrease the expression of IL-6 and iNOS induced by BBR. CONCLUSIONS BBR inhibits the cell migration ability through increasing inducible NO synthase and peroxynitrite in HTR-8/SVneo cells, indicating that BBR and traditional Chinese medicines containing a high proportion of BBR should be used with caution in pregnant women.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-related disorder associated with maternal hypertension and placental dysfunction. A significant micronutrient during pregnancy is iron, which is important in cellular functions. While iron absorption increases in pregnancy, little is known about the exact mechanisms regulating maternal iron levels and transfer through the placenta in normal and complicated pregnancies. METHODS In this retrospective study, we investigated the regulation of maternal and placental iron availability and storage, in normotensive and pregnancies complicated by early- or late-onset PE. Methods used were analysis of clinical records, ELISA analysis on plasma samples, immunofluorescent and Prussian Blue analysis on placenta biopsies. RESULTS Focusing on erythroferrone (ERFE) as a new marker and hormonal regulator of iron, our results demonstrated altered maternal ERFE levels in PE. We are the first to report the expression of ERFE in trophoblasts and indicate its lower levels in early-onset PE placentas. These changes were associated with lower placental transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) in syncytiotrophoblasts in both early- and late-onset PE. In addition, maternal plasma ERFE levels were elevated in both early- and late-onset PE and hepcidin levels reduced in early-onset PE. Unaltered maternal plasma IL-6 levels suggest mechanism other than inflammation being involved in altered iron regulation in PE pregnancy. DISCUSSION Our data supports a deregulation in maternal iron bioavailability in early- and late-onset PE vs normotensive pregnancies. The exact role of placental ERFE in regulating maternal-placental-fetal iron transport axis requires further investigation.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is the result of an imbalance between the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the levels of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. The assessment of biological redox status is performed by the use of oxidative stress biomarkers. An oxidative stress biomarker is defined as any physical structure or process or chemical compound that can be assessed in a living being (in vivo) or in solid or fluid parts thereof (in vitro), the determination of which is a reproducible and reliable indicator of oxidative stress. The use of oxidative stress biomarkers allows early identification of the risk of developing diseases associated with this process and also opens up possibilities for new treatments. At the end of the last century, interest in oxidative stress biomarkers began to grow, due to evidence of the association between the generation of free radicals and various pathologies. Up to now, a significant number of studies have been carried out to identify and apply different oxidative stress biomarkers in clinical practice. Among the most important oxidative stress biomarkers, it can be mentioned the products of oxidative modifications of lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and uric acid as well as the measurement of the total antioxidant capacity of fluids in the human body. In this review, we aim to present recent advances and current knowledge on the main biomarkers of oxidative stress, including the discovery of new biomarkers, with emphasis on the various reproductive complications associated with variations in oxidative stress levels.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is a disease that is unique to pregnancy and affects multiple systems. It can lead to maternal and perinatal mortality. The precise etiology of PE is unclear. Patients with PE may have systemic or local immune abnormalities. A group of researchers has proposed that the immune communication between the fetus and mother is primarily moderated by natural killer (NK) cells as opposed to T cells, since NK cells are the most abundant immune cells in the uterus. This review examines the immunological roles of NK cells in the pathogenesis of PE. Our aim is to provide obstetricians with a comprehensive and updated research progress report on NK cells in PE patients. It has been reported that decidual NK (dNK) cells contribute to the process of uterine spiral artery remodeling and can modulate trophoblast invasion. Additionally, dNK cells can stimulate fetal growth and regulate delivery. It appears that the count or proportion of circulating NK cells is elevated in patients with or at risk for PE. Changes in the number or function of dNK cells may be the cause of PE. The Th1/Th2 equilibrium in PE has gradually shifted to an NK1/NK2 equilibrium based on cytokine production. An improper combination of killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-C may lead to insufficient activation of dNK cells, thereby causing PE. In the etiology of PE, NK cells appear to exert a central effect in both peripheral blood and the maternal-fetal interface. To maintain immune equilibrium both locally and systemically, it is necessary to take therapeutic measures directed at NK cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been found to have important roles in vascular pathology and may be involved in the occurrence of pre-eclampsia. In this study, the serum levels of MMP-2, -7, -9 in normal pregnant women and pre-eclampsia patients were analyzed to assess their predictive value. METHODS A total of 1563 pregnant women from Peking University Third Hospital, from February 2021 to October 2021, were enrolled. Serum samples were collected from patients one to three times, during the different trimesters. Among the 102 singleton pre-eclampsia patients, we collected samples from 33 patients in the first trimester (6-13 GW), 33 in the second trimester (14-28 GW), 41 in the third trimester (29-41 GW) and 28 after onset of pre-eclampsia. Samples from each trimester were collected before the onset of pre-eclampsia. Then we selected 35, 37, 43 and 25 samples from 124 healthy pregnant women by matching their age, BMI and gestational weeks, using these as the control groups. Serum levels of MMP-2, -7, -9 were detected by ELISA. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate their predictive value. RESULTS Except for the first trimester, MMP-2 and MMP-7 were significantly higher in the pre-eclampsia group (p < 0.5). Additionally, in the pre-eclampsia group, MMP-9 increased significantly in the first trimester and after the onset of pre-eclampsia but decreased significantly in the second and third trimesters (p < 0.5). The ROC curve indicated that MMP-9, MMP-2 and MMP-7 were the best indicators for predicting pre-eclampsia in the first, second and third trimesters, respectively. CONCLUSION Increased MMP-2 and MMP-7 levels and a decreased MMP-9 level seem to be related to the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia and are expected to be potential predictors of pre-eclampsia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) remain a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide, with implications for maternal and neonatal well-being in the short term and for long-term maternal cardiovascular health. Although the mechanisms behind HDP remain incompletely understood, evidence suggests that preeclampsia in particular is a syndrome with more than one distinct subtype. OBJECTIVES The PEACH (PreEclampsia, Angiogenesis, Cardiac dysfunction, Hypertension) Study was established to identify new HDP subtyping systems reflecting aetiology and prognosis and to find markers of later cardiovascular disease risk associated with preeclampsia. POPULATION The PEACH Study recruited pregnant women referred to two Copenhagen-area hospitals with suspected preeclampsia (mean gestational age at enrolment: 36.7 weeks) and a group of frequency-matched pregnant women planning delivery at the same hospitals and healthy when enrolled mid-pregnancy. DESIGN Prospective, longitudinal pregnancy cohort. METHODS Participants underwent repeated third-trimester blood sample collection, longitudinal cardiac function assessments using the USCOM-1A during the third trimester and at 1 year postpartum and collection of placental samples immediately after delivery. Medical information was abstracted from medical records and hospital databases. PRELIMINARY RESULTS During 2016-2018, we recruited 1149 pregnant women, of whom 1101 were followed to delivery. Among 691 women enrolled with suspected preeclampsia, 310 and 172 developed preeclampsia and gestational hypertension respectively. Among 410 women with healthy pregnancies when enrolled mid-pregnancy, 37 later developed hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Of 1089 women still in the cohort 1 year postpartum, 578 (53.1%) participated in the follow-up assessment. CONCLUSIONS The PEACH Study's rich data from women with and without HDP will enable us to identify new, clinically useful HDP subtypes to aid in decision-making regarding monitoring and treatment. Continued postpartum follow-up will help us develop algorithms to identify women at risk of persistent postpartum cardiac dysfunction and later cardiovascular disease after pregnancies complicated by HDP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the association between altered expression of caveolin-1 and p53/p21, as indicatives of cellular senescence, in preeclamptic placenta. STUDY DESIGN Placental tissues and serum were collected from rats (Sham and reduced uterine perfusion pressure group) at 18.5 days post coitum and humans (normotensive pregnant and preeclampsia groups). The concentration and expression of caveolin-1 were measured in the collected tissues, and the correlation between p53 and p21 expression was evaluation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Placental mRNA expression and serum concentration of caveolin-1 were measured using qRT-PCR and ELISA, respectively. Altered expressions of caveolin-1 and p53/p21 were revealed and quantified by immunohistochemistry. The association between these changes was investigated using correlation analysis. RESULTS Placental mRNA expressions and serum concentrations of caveolin-1 were significantly decreased in reduced uterine perfusion pressure and preeclampsia groups. The expressions of caveolin-1 and p53/ p21 were significantly altered in placenta complicated with preeclampsia. Correlation analysis revealed a significant inverse association between changes in caveolin-1 and p53/p21. Subsequently, these results were obtained by investigating the preeclampsia onset time. CONCLUSION These results revealed that the expression of caveolin-1 profoundly decreases in the placenta and serum of preeclampsia. These factors contribute to the mechanism of accelerated cellular senescence in placenta, which is one of the various etiologies of preeclampsia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We have demonstrated that protein aggregation plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia and identified several aggregated proteins in the circulation of preeclampsia patients, the most prominent of which is the serum protein TTR (transthyretin). However, the mechanisms that underlie protein aggregation remain poorly addressed. METHODS We examined TTR aggregates in hypoxia/reoxygenation-exposed primary human trophoblasts (PHTs) and the preeclampsia placenta using complementary approaches, including a novel protein aggregate detection assay. Mechanistic analysis was performed in hypoxia/reoxygenation-exposed PHTs and Ttr transgenic mice overexpressing transgene-encoded wild-type human TTR or Ttr-/- mice. High-resolution ultrasound analysis was used to measure placental blood flow in pregnant mice. RESULTS TTR aggregation was inducible in PHTs and the TCL-1 trophoblast cell line by endoplasmic reticulum stress inducers or autophagy-lysosomal disruptors. PHTs exposed to hypoxia/reoxygenation showed increased intracellular BiP (binding immunoglobulin protein), phosphorylated IRE1α (inositol-requiring enzyme-1α), PDI (protein disulfide isomerase), and Ero-1, all markers of the unfolded protein response, and the apoptosis mediator caspase-3. Blockade of IRE1α inhibited hypoxia/reoxygenation-induced upregulation of Ero-1 in PHTs. Excessive unfolded protein response activation was observed in the early-onset preeclampsia placenta. Importantly, pregnant human TTR mice displayed aggregated TTR in the junctional zone of the placenta and severe preeclampsia-like features. High-resolution ultrasound analysis revealed low blood flow in uterine and umbilical arteries in human TTR mice compared with control mice. However, Ttr-/- mice did not show any pregnancy-associated abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS These observations in the preeclampsia placenta, cultured trophoblasts, and Ttr transgenic mice indicate that TTR aggregation is an important causal contributor to preeclampsia pathophysiology.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is a leading condition threatening pregnant women and their offspring. The offspring of PE pregnancies have a high risk of poor neurodevelopmental outcomes and neuropsychological diseases later in life. However, the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of poor neurodevelopment remain undetermined. Abnormal placental functions are at the core of most PE cases, and recent research evidence supports that the placenta plays an important role in fetal brain development. Here, we summarize the relationship between abnormal fetal brain development and placental dysfunction in PE conditions, which include the dysfunction of nutrient and gas-waste exchange, impaired angiogenesis stimulation, abnormal neurotransmitter regulation, disrupted special protectors, and immune disorders. All these factors could lead to poor neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Abstract
D6 is a scavenger receptor for CC chemokines expressed in the human placenta. It prevents excessive leukocyte tissue infiltration by internalizing chemokines through cytoskeleton-dependent intracellular transport. In preeclampsia (PE), the D6 receptor is overexpressed in trophoblast cells, but functionally impaired, due to cytoskeleton destructuring. Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) represents a potential treatment for PE based on its anti-thrombotic and anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we investigated the effect of enoxaparin on D6 expression, and cytoskeleton organization primary cytotrophoblast cell cultures were obtained from the placentae of women with PE (n = 9) or uncomplicated pregnancy (n = 9). We demonstrated that enoxaparin is able to (i) increase D6 expression, and (ii) improve cytoskeletal fiber alignment in trophoblast cells from PE patients.

Abstract
The well-developed placentation is fundamental for the reproductive pregnancy while the defective placental development is the pathogenetic basis of preeclampsia (PE), a dangerous complication of pregnancy comprising the leading causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PMSCs) are a group of multipotent stem cells that own a potent capacity of differentiating into constitutive cells of vessel walls. Additionally, with the paracrine secretion of various factors, PMSCs inextricably link and interact with other component cells in the placenta, collectively improving the placental vasculature, uterine spiral artery remolding, and uteroplacental interface immunoregulation. Recent studies have further indicated that preeclamptic PMSCs, closely implicated in the abnormal crosstalk between other ambient cells, disturb the homeostasis and development in the placenta. Nevertheless, PMSCs transplantation or PMSCs exosome therapies tend to improve the placental vascular network and trophoblastic functions in the PE model, suggesting PMSCs may be a novel and putative therapeutic strategy for PE. Herein, we provide an overview of the multifaceted contributions of PMSCs in early placental development. Thereinto, the intensive interactions between PMSCs and other component cells in the placenta were particularly highlighted and further extended to the implications in the pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies of PE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study compared the modulatory effect of two intravenous magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) regimens on the systemic inflammatory response in pregnant women diagnosed with imminent eclampsia. STUDY DESIGN In a single-blind cross-sectional study, 33 women were allocated according to the Zuspan (n = 16) and Sibai (n = 17) MgSO4 regimens, and treated for 24 h. Blood samples were collected pre-administration of the loading dose, at 24 h of the maintenance dose of MgSO4, and at 48 h, when patients were without treatment. Plasma was used to determine interleukin (IL)-1 beta (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), heat shock protein (Hsp70), and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) by ELISA. RESULTS The treatment with the Zuspan's regimen didn't change plasma concentrations of TNF-α, IL-10, and Hsp70 in the three-time points studied. However, it decreased IL-1β at 24 h and 48 h and IL-6 at 48 h, and increased HO-1 concentration at 48 h. On the other hand, compared to the pre-treatment period, Sibai's regimen induced a significant decrease in TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and Hsp70, while increased HO-1 levels both at 24 h and 48 h and, IL-10 concentration at 48 h. CONCLUSIONS Sibai's regimen determined an early and efficient immunoregulatory effect on systemic inflammatory response in preeclampsia, suggesting that the maintenance dose of two grams of MgSO4 was better than one gram in the treatment of imminent eclampsia.

Abstract
Purpose To explore changes in telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial copy number (mtDNA-CN) in preeclampsia (PE) and to evaluate the combined effect of maternal TL and mtDNA-CN on PE risk. Methods A case–control study of 471 subjects (130 PE cases and 341 age frequency matched controls with gestational age rank from 24 to 42 weeks) was conducted in Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Jiangsu Province of China. Relative telomere length (RTL) and mtDNA-CN were measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and PE risk was compared between groups by logistic regression analyses. Results PE patients displayed longer RTL (0.48 versus 0.30) and higher mtDNA-CN (3.02 versus 2.00) in maternal blood as well as longer RTL (0.61 versus 0.35) but lower mtDNA-CN (1.69 versus 5.49) in cord blood (all p < 0.001). Exercise during pregnancy exerted an obvious effect of maternal telomere length prolongation. Multiparous women with folic acid intake during early pregnancy and those who delivered vaginally showed longer telomere length, while those factors imposed no or opposite effect on RTL in PE cases. Furthermore, RTL and mtDNA-CN were positively correlated in controls (in maternal blood r = 0.18, p < 0.01; in cord blood r = 0.19, p < 0.001), but this correlation was disrupted in PE patients in both maternal blood and cord blood. Longer maternal RTL and higher mtDNA-CN were associated with a higher risk of PE, and the ROC curve of RTL and mtDNA-CN for predicting PE risk presented an AUC of 0.755 (95% CI: 0.698–0.812). Conclusions The interaction of TL and mtDNA-CN may play an important role in the pathogenesis of PE and could be a potential biomarker of PE risk. Abstract
BACKGROUND Impaired vascular function is a central feature of pathologic processes preceding the onset of preeclampsia. Arterial stiffness, a composite indicator of vascular health and an important vascular biomarker, has been found to be increased throughout pregnancy in those who develop preeclampsia and at the time of preeclampsia diagnosis. Although sleep-disordered breathing in pregnancy has been associated with increased risk for preeclampsia, it is unknown if sleep-disordered breathing is associated with elevated arterial stiffness in pregnancy. OBJECTIVE This prospective observational cohort study aimed to evaluate arterial stiffness in pregnant women, with and without sleep-disordered breathing and assess the interaction between arterial stiffness, sleep-disordered breathing, and preeclampsia risk. STUDY DESIGN Women with high-risk singleton pregnancies were enrolled at 10 to 13 weeks' gestation and completed the Epworth Sleepiness Score, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Restless Legs Syndrome questionnaires at each trimester. Sleep-disordered breathing was defined as loud snoring or witnessed apneas (≥3 times per week). Central arterial stiffness (carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, the gold standard measure of arterial stiffness), peripheral arterial stiffness (carotid-radial pulse wave velocity), wave reflection (augmentation index, time to wave reflection), and hemodynamics (central blood pressures, pulse pressure amplification) were assessed noninvasively using applanation tonometry at recruitment and every 4 weeks from recruitment until delivery. RESULTS High-risk pregnant women (n=181) were included in the study. Women with sleep-disordered breathing (n=41; 23%) had increased carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity throughout gestation independent of blood pressure and body mass index (P=.042). Differences observed in other vascular measures were not maintained after adjustment for confounders. Excessive daytime sleepiness, defined by Epworth Sleepiness Score >10, was associated with increased carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity only in women with sleep-disordered breathing (Pinteraction=.001). Midgestation (first or second trimester) sleep-disordered breathing was associated with an odds ratio of 3.4 (0.9-12.9) for preeclampsia, which increased to 5.7 (1.1-26.0) in women with sleep-disordered breathing and hypersomnolence, whereas late (third-trimester) sleep-disordered breathing was associated with an odds ratio of 8.2 (1.5-39.5) for preeclampsia. CONCLUSION High-risk pregnant women with midgestational sleep-disordered breathing had greater arterial stiffness throughout gestation than those without. Sleep-disordered breathing at any time during pregnancy was also associated with increased preeclampsia risk, and this effect was amplified by hypersomnolence.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is a major complication of pregnancy with both mother and fetal adverse outcomes. Pregnancy is a state of increased oxidative stress that has been reported to be exacerbated when complicated with preeclampsia. However, conflicting data are available in literature regarding the systemic oxidative stress in PE pregnancies. The present pilot study was purported to assess systemic oxidative stress in preeclamptic vs healthy pregnancies. To this aim plasma derived compounds of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) and the biological antioxidant potential (BAP) were determined in mild and severe preeclamptic pregnancies using the Diacron equipment. Both healthy and preeclamptic pregnancies showed high levels of systemic oxidative stress. Paradoxically, significantly higher values of d-ROMs were found in healthy pregnancies as compared to the PE ones. At variance, in preeclamptic pregnancies, a major increase in the plasma antioxidant capacity occurred. In this pilot study, we report an increase in the systemic antioxidant capacity in preeclamptic pregnancies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND At present, pre-eclampsia is a growing concern and still a diagnostic challenge for obstetricians. AIMS This study aimed to evaluate whether the relationship of second trimester of pregnancy neutrophil count differed among pregnancies with mild preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia, and healthy status and explore whether or not neutrophil count in the second trimester of pregnancy would be useful as new predictors of subsequent preeclampsia. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study involved 933 pregnancies from 1 January 2018 to 30 January 2021, comprising 396 healthy pregnancies, 222 pregnancies with mild preeclampsia, and 315 pregnancies with severe preeclampsia. The relationship between preeclampsia and neutrophil count was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. In addition, maternal placental tissues of three groups were immunohistochemically stained for myeloperoxidase (MPO). RESULTS Neutrophil count was significantly higher in pregnancies with preeclampsia (including pregnancies with mild and severe preeclampsia) than that in healthy pregnancies. The neutrophil count level was prominently higher in patients with severe preeclampsia compared with those with mild preeclampsia (p < .001). The neutrophil count level was significantly positively associated with preeclampsia after adjusting for gestational week at time of blood sampling, BMI, and age (β:1.23; 95%CI:1.09-1.36; p < .0001). In addition, MPO expressions of placental tissues in preeclamptic groups were significantly increased than these in healthy pregnant controls (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS Increased neutrophil count in the second trimester of pregnancy was significantly positively associated with preeclampsia. Hence, neutrophil count plays a role in predicting the severity of preeclampsia. Abstract
Background Preeclampsia is pregnancy specific, involving significant maternal endothelial dysfunction. Predictive biomarkers are lacking. We evaluated the biomarker potential, expression, and function of PSG7 (pregnancy‐specific β‐1 glycoprotein 7) and PSG9 (pregnancy‐specific β‐1 glycoprotein 9) in preeclampsia. Methods and Results At 36 weeks gestation preceding term preeclampsia diagnosis, PSG7 and PSG9 (in Australian cohorts of n=918 and n=979, respectively) were significantly increased before the onset of term preeclampsia (PSG7, P=0.013; PSG9, P=0.0011). In samples collected at 28 to 32 weeks from those with preexisting cardiovascular disease and at high risk of preeclampsia (Manchester Antenatal Vascular Service, UK cohort, n=235), both PSG7 and PSG9 were also significantly increased preceding preeclampsia onset (PSG7, P<0.0001; PSG9, P=0.0003) relative to controls. These changes were validated in the plasma and placentas of patients with established preeclampsia who delivered at <34 weeks gestation (PSG7, P=0.0008; PSG9, P<0.0001). To examine whether PSG7 and PSG9 are associated with increasing disease severity, we measured them in a cohort from South Africa stratified for this outcome, the PROVE (Preeclampsia Obstetric Adverse Events) cohort (n=72). PSG7 (P=0.0027) and PSG9 (P=0.0028) were elevated among patients who were preeclamptic with severe features (PROVE cohort), but not significantly changed in those without severe features or with eclampsia. In syncytialized first trimester cytotrophoblast stem cells, exposure to TNFα (tumor necrosis factor α) or IL‐6 (interleukin 6) significantly increased the expression and secretion of PSG7 and PSG9. In contrast, when we treated primary endothelial cells with recombinant PSG7 and PSG9, we only observed modest changes in Flt‐1 (FMS‐like tyrosine kinase‐1) expression and Plgf (placental growth factor) expression, and no other effects on proangiogenic/antiangiogenic or endothelial dysfunction markers were observed. Conclusions Circulating PSG7 and PSG9 are increased before preeclampsia onset and among those with established disease with their production and release potentially driven by placental inflammation.

Abstract
Preeclampsia complicates 2-8% of pregnancies and is associated with prematurity and intrauterine growth restriction. Cholesterol and sterol transport is a key function of the placenta and it is elicited through ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABCA1 expression changes during trophoblast cell fusion, a process required to form the placental syncytium that enables maternal-fetal nutrient transfer. ABCA1 expression is dysregulated in preeclamptic placentas. But whether ABC transporters expression during trophoblast fusion is disrupted in preeclampsia remains unknown. We investigated if cholesterol and sterol ABC transporters are altered in term and preterm preeclampsia placentas and during human cytotrophoblast syncytialization. Human placental biopsies were collected from healthy term (≥37 weeks; n = 11) and term preeclamptic (≥36 6/7 weeks; n = 8) and pre-term preeclamptic (28-35 weeks; n = 8) pregnancies. Both, protein and mRNA expression for ABCA1, ABCG1, ABCG5, and ABCG8 were evaluated. Primary cytotrophoblasts isolated from a subset of placentas were induced to syncytialize for 96 h and ABCA1, ABCG1 and ABCG8 mRNA expression evaluated at 0 h and 96 h. Protein and gene expression of ABC transporters were not altered in preeclamptic placentas. In the healthy Term group, ABCA1 expression was similar before and after syncytialization. After 96 h of syncytialization, mRNA expression of ABCA1 and ABCG1 increased significantly, while ABCG8 decreased significantly in term-preeclampsia, but not pre-term preeclampsia. While placental expression of ABCA1 and ABCG1 remained unaltered in term preeclampsia, the disruption in their dynamic expression pattern during cytotrophoblast syncytialization suggests that cholesterol transport may contribute to the pathophysiologic role of the placenta in preeclampsia.

Abstract
Among mammalian species, human reproduction has 2 outstanding features. The human hemochorial placentation is characterized by a very deep endovascular trophoblast invasion in the spiral arteries, reaching deep into the myometrium. This requires an agonistic direct cell-cell interaction between the maternal immune system and semiallogeneic trophoblast. The second feature is preeclampsia, a heterogeneous syndrome, a uniquely human condition. The human female is one of the few mammals exposed to her partner's semen on multiple occasions before conception. Regulatory T cells, especially paternal antigen-specific regulatory T cells, play an important role in the maintenance of pregnancy. Sexual intercourse increases the number of dendritic cells in the uterus that play an important role in the induction of paternal antigen-specific regulatory T cells. Paternal antigen-specific regulatory T cells maintain pregnancy by inducing tolerance. In the decidua basalis of preeclamptic cases, clonal regulatory T cells are reduced; these would normally monoclonally expand to recognize fetal or paternal antigens. Programmed cell death-1 expressed on T cells regulate cytotoxic T-cell activity and protect the fetus against maternal rejection. Programmed cell death-1 expression on clonal cytotoxic T cells is reduced in preeclampsia especially in early-onset preeclampsia, making the fetus and placenta vulnerable to attack by cytotoxic T cells. These phenomena can explain the epidemiologic phenomenon that preeclampsia is more common in couples using condom contraception, with shorter cohabitation periods, first pregnancies, first pregnancies in multiparous women when they change partner, and pregnancies after assisted reproduction using donated gametes. In contrast to its importance in early-onset preeclampsia, shallow trophoblast invasion does not play a role in the development of preeclampsia, that is, immune maladaptation does not seem to be involved. Late-onset preeclampsia (>34 weeks' gestation), representing 80% to 90% of preeclampsia in most developed countries with a "Western lifestyle," is strongly associated with maternal cardiometabolic variables (metabolic syndrome). Although the underlying pathophysiology might be quite different, syncytiotrophoblast stress is the final common pathway leading to the maternal syndrome among the subtypes of preeclampsia by causing an imbalance between proangiogenic factors (placental growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor) and antiangiogenic factors (soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 and soluble endoglin). Low-dose aspirin, started before 16 week's gestation, will prevent up to 60% of early-onset preeclampsia but will not prevent late-onset preeclampsia. Optimizing prepregnancy weight and controlling gestational weight gain may be the most effective ways to prevent preeclampsia.

Abstract
As the search for non-invasive preclinical markers of preeclampsia (PE) expands, the number of studies on the diagnostic potential of exosomes is growing. Changes in the partial pressure of oxygen caused by impaired uteroplacental perfusion in PE are a powerful inducer of increased production and release of exosomes from cells, which also determine their cargo. At the same time, the expression pattern of oxygen-dependent microRNAs (miRNAs), called "hypoxamiRs", is modulated, and their packing into exosomes is strictly regulated by sumoylation. In connection therewith, we emphasize the evaluation of exosomal hypoxamiR expression (miR-27b-3p, miR-92b-3p, miR-181a-5p, and miR-186-5p) using quantitative RT-PCR, as well as SUMO 1-4 and UBC9 (by Western blotting), in pregnant women with early-onset PE. The findings show that miR-27b-3p and miR-92b-3p expression was significantly changed at 11-14 and 24-26 weeks of gestation in the blood plasma of pregnant women with early-onset PE, which subsequently manifested. High sensitivity and specificity (AUC = 1) were demonstrated for these miRNAs in the first trimester, and significant correlations with a decrease in hemoglobin (r = 0.71, p = 0.002; r = -0.71, p = 0.002) were established. In mid-pregnancy, the miR-27b-3p expression was found to correlate with an increase in platelets (r = -0.95, p = 0.003), and miR-92b-3p was associated with a decrease in the prothrombin index (r = 0.95, p = 0.003). Specific exomotifs of studied miRNAs were also identified, to which the sumoylated ribonucleoprotein hnRNPA2/B1 binds, carrying out their packaging into exosomes. The expression of conjugated SUMO 1 (p = 0.05), SUMO 2/3/4 (p = 0.03), and UBC9 (p = 0.1) was increased in exosomes at early-onset PE, and the expression of free SUMO 1 (p = 0.03) and SUMO 2/3/4 (p = 0.01) was significantly increased in the placenta, as an adaptive response to hypoxia. Moreover, SUMO 2/3/4 was negatively correlated with miR-27b-3p expression in the placenta. In conclusion, the diagnostic potential of exosomal hypoxamiRs mediated by sumoylation may form the basis for the development of combined specific targets for the treatment of early-onset PE, as hnRNPA2/B1 is a target of miR-27b-3p, and its sumoylation creates miR-27b-3p-hnRNPA2/B1-SUMO 1-4 cross-talk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Preeclampsia, characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, and fetal growth restriction, is one of the leading causes of maternal and perinatal mortality. By far, there is no effective pharmacological therapy for preeclampsia. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of L-citrulline supplementation in Dahl salt-sensitive rat, a model of superimposed preeclampsia. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Parental DSSR were treated with L-citrulline (2.5 g/L in drinking water) from the day of mating to the end of lactation period. Blood pressure of the rats was monitored throughout pregnancy and markers of preeclampsia were assessed. Endothelial function of the pregnant DSSR was assessed by wire myograph. KEY RESULTS L-citrulline supplementation significantly reduced maternal blood pressure, proteinuria, and levels of circulating soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 in DSSR. L-citrulline improved maternal endothelial function by augmenting the production of nitric oxide in the aorta and improving endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor-mediated vasorelaxation in resistance arteries. L-citrulline supplementation improved placental insufficiency and fetal growth, which were associated with an enhancement of angiogenesis and reduction of fibrosis and senescence in the placentas. In addition, L-citrulline downregulated genes involved in the toll-like receptor 4 and nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS This study shows that L-citrulline supplementation reduces gestational hypertension, improves placentation and fetal growth in a rat model of superimposed preeclampsia. L-citrulline supplementation may represent an effective and safe therapeutic strategy for preeclampsia that benefit both the mother and the fetus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preeclampsia (PE) is a complex pregnancy syndrome characterised by maternal hypertension and organ damage after 20 weeks of gestation and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease later in life. Extracellular haemoglobin (Hb) and its metabolites heme and iron are highly toxic molecules and several defence mechanisms have evolved to protect the tissue. OBJECTIVES We will discuss the roles of free iron, heme, Hb, and the scavenger proteins haemopexin and alpha-1-microglobulin in pregnancies complicated by PE and fetal growth restriction (FGR). CONCLUSION In PE, oxidative stress causes syncytiotrophoblast (STB) stress and increased shedding of placental STB-derived extracellular vesicles (STBEV). The level in maternal circulation correlates with the severity of hypertension and supports the involvement of STBEVs in causing maternal symptoms in PE. In PE and FGR, iron homeostasis is changed, and iron levels significantly correlate with the severity of the disease. The normal increase in plasma volume taking place during pregnancy is less for PE and FGR and therefore have a different impact on, for example, iron concentration, compared to normal pregnancy. Excess iron promotes ferroptosis is suggested to play a role in trophoblast stress and lipotoxicity. Non-erythroid α-globin regulates vasodilation through the endothelial nitric oxide synthase pathway, and hypoxia-induced α-globin expression in STBs in PE placentas is suggested to contribute to hypertension in PE. Underlying placental pathology in PE with and without FGR might be amplified by iron and heme overload causing oxidative stress and ferroptosis. As the placenta becomes stressed, the release of STBEVs increases and affects the maternal vasculature.

Abstract
Introduction The reported effects of SARS-CoV-2 on pregnancy outcomes are conflicting; studies frequently overlook the placenta, which is critical for the health of the mother and infant(s). This study aimed to determine the effect of pandemic stress ± SARS CoV-2 infection on placental histopathology. Methods Women were recruited in Canada (n = 69); France (n = 21) or in the UK (n = 25), between March and October 2020. Historic controls (N = 20) were also included. Placenta and fetal membrane samples were collected rapidly after delivery and were fixed and stained for histopathological analysis. Maternal demographical data and obstetric outcomes were recorded. Results Over 80% of the placentas from SARS-CoV-2+ pregnancies had histopathological abnormalities: predominantly structural (71–86%) or inflammatory (9–22%), depending on geographical location. Excessive fibrin was seen in all sites, whereas deciduitis (Canada), calcifications (UK), agglutinations and chorangiosis (France) predominated in different locations. The frequency of abnormalities was significantly higher than in SARS-CoV-2 negative women (50%, p < 0.05). Demographic and obstetric data were similar in the SARS-CoV-2+ women across all sites - characterised by predominantly Black/Middle Eastern women, and women with elevated body mass index. Discussion Overall, the frequency of placental abnormalities is increased in SARS-CoV-2+ women, but the incidence of placental abnormalities is also higher in SARS-CoV-2- women that gave birth during the pandemic, which highlights the importance of appropriate control groups to ascertain the roles of pandemic stress and SARS-CoV-2 infection on the placenta and pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
There are two fairly common complications during pregnancy, i.e., gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pre-eclampsia, which are independent, but are also closely linked in prevalence in pregnant women, with potential serious adverse consequences. IL-37 and IL-38, which belong to the IL-1 superfamily, participate in anti-inflammatory responses. Dysregulation of IL-37 and IL-38 has been observed in many auto-immune diseases. IL-37 is substantially reduced in the umbilical cords and placentas of GDM subjects, but IL-37 is significantly induced in the placentas of pre-eclampsia patients, suggesting there are differential regulatory roles of IL-37 in obstetrics, despite IL-37 being an anti-inflammatory mediator. Furthermore, IL-38 is substantially increased in the umbilical cords and placentas of GDM subjects, but minimal difference is observed in the placentas from pre-eclampsia patients. These data imply that IL-38 is also regulated independently within the diseased placentas. This review provides some insight for both basic scientists and medical practitioners to manage these patients effectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify systolic blood pressure (SBP) percentile trajectories in children and to describe the early-life risk factors and cardiometabolic correlates of those trajectories. STUDY DESIGN Using age-, sex-, and height-specific SBP percentiles based on the American Academy of Pediatrics reference, we examined SBP trajectories using latent class mixed models from ages 3 to 8 years (n = 844) from the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes-study, a Singaporean mother-offspring cohort study. We analyzed associations between SBP trajectories and early-life risk factors using multinomial logistic regression and differences across trajectories in cardiometabolic outcomes using multiple linear regression. RESULTS Children were classified into 1 of 4 SBP percentile trajectories: "low increasing" (15%), "high stable" (47%), "high decreasing" (20%), and "low stable" (18%). Maternal hypertension during early pregnancy was a predictor of the "high stable" and "low increasing" SBP trajectories. Rapid child weight gain in the first 2 years of life was only associated with the "high stable" trajectory. Compared with children in the "low stable" trajectory, children in the "high stable" SBP trajectory had greater body mass index z scores, sum of skinfold thicknesses, waist circumference from ages 3 to 8 years, and abdominal adipose tissue (milliliters) at 4.5 years (adjusted mean difference [95% CI]: superficial and deep subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue: 115.2 [48.1-182.3] and 85.5 [35.2-135.8]). Their fat mass (kilograms) (1.3 [0.6-2.0]), triglyceride levels (mmol/L) (0.10 [0.02-0.18]), and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (0.28 [0.11 0.46]) at age 6 years were also greater but not their arterial thickness and stiffness. CONCLUSIONS Reducing maternal blood pressure during pregnancy and infant weight gain in the first 2 years of life might help to prevent the development of high SBP.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy complication associated with increased maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The disease presents with recent onset hypertension (after 20 weeks of gestation) and proteinuria, and can progress to multiple organ dysfunction, with worse outcomes among early onset preeclampsia (EOP) cases (< 34 weeks). The placenta is considered the root cause of PE; it represents the interface between the mother and the fetus, and acts as a macromembrane between the two circulations, due to its villous and vascular structures. Therefore, in pathological conditions, macroscopic and microscopic evaluation can provide clinically useful information that can confirm diagnosis and enlighten about outcomes and future therapeutic benefit. OBJECTIVE To perform an integrative review of the literature on pathological placental findings associated to preeclampsia (comparing EOP and late onset preeclampsia [LOP]) and its impacts on clinical manifestations. RESULTS Cases of EOP presented worse maternal and perinatal outcomes, and pathophysiological and anatomopathological findings were different between EOP and LOP placentas, with less placental perfusion, greater placental pathological changes with less villous volume (villous hypoplasia), greater amount of trophoblastic debris, syncytial nodules, microcalcification, villous infarcts, decidual arteriolopathy in EOP placentas when compared with LOP placentas. Clinically, the use of low doses of aspirin has been shown to be effective in preventing PE, as well as magnesium sulfate in preventing seizures in cases of severe features. CONCLUSION The anatomopathological characteristics between EOP and LOP are significantly different, with large morphological changes in cases of EOP, such as hypoxia, villous infarctions, and hypoplasia, among others, most likely as an attempt to ascertain adequate blood flow to the fetus. Therefore, a better understanding of the basic macroscopic examination and histological patterns of the injury is important to help justify outcomes and to determine cases more prone to recurrence and long-term consequences.

Abstract
The applicability of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations of gestational weight gain (GWG) for Chinese twin gestations is uncertain. In this article, we aimed to investigate the associations between GWG among twin gestations, as categorized according to the 2009 IOM guidelines and perinatal outcomes in Chengdu, China. A retrospective cohort study of pregnant women delivering live twins ≥28 weeks at a tertiary maternal and child hospital was conducted. The incidences of perinatal outcomes were compared across 3 groups-that is, women with low, adequate, and excessive GWG. Logistic regression analyses were next performed to confirm the associations while taking into account potential confounders. Results showed that low GWG was associated with a higher risk of preterm birth, low and very low birthweight, neonatal intensive care unit admission, and gestational diabetes, whereas preeclampsia was more frequent among excessive GWG women. In conclusion, adherence to the 2009 IOM guidelines for twin pregnancies are associated with improved perinatal outcomes. This has the potential to improve short- and long-term public health outcomes.

Abstract
Animal models that recapitulate human diseases and disorders are widely used to investigate etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of those conditions in people. Disorders during pregnancy are particularly difficult to explore as interventions in pregnant women are not easily performed. Therefore, models that allow for pre-conception investigations are advantageous for elucidating the mechanisms involved in adverse pregnancy outcomes that are responsible for both maternal and fetal morbidity, such as preeclampsia. The Blood Pressure High (BPH)/5 mouse model has been used extensively to study the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. The female BPH/5 mouse is obese with increased adiposity and borderline hypertension, both of which are exacerbated with pregnancy making it a model of superimposed preeclampsia. Thus, the BPH/5 model shares traits with a large majority of women with pre-existing conditions that predisposes them to preeclampsia. We sought to explore the genome of the BPH/5 female mouse and determine the genetic underpinnings that may contribute to preeclampsia-associated phenotypes in this model. Using a whole genome sequencing approach, we are the first to characterize the genetic mutations in BPH/5 female mice that make it unique from the closely related BPH/2 model and the normotensive background strain, C57Bl/6. We found the BPH/5 female mouse to be uniquely different from BPH/2 and C57Bl/6 mice with a genetically complex landscape. The majority of non-synonymous consequences within the coding region of BPH/5 females were missense mutations found most abundant on chromosome X when comparing BPH/5 and BPH/2, and on chromosome 8 when comparing BPH/5 to C57Bl/6. Genetic mutations in BPH/5 females largely belong to immune system-related processes, with overlap between BPH/5 and BPH/2 models. Further studies examining each gene mutation during pregnancy are warranted to determine key contributors to the BPH/5 preeclamptic-like phenotype and to identify genetic similarities to women that develop preeclampsia.

Abstract
There is growing evidence of long-term cardiovascular sequelae in children after in utero exposure to preeclampsia. Maternal hypertension and/or placental ischaemia during pregnancy increase the risk of hypertension, stroke, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the offspring later in life. The mechanisms associated with CVD seem to be a combination of genetic, molecular, and environmental factors which can be defined as fetal and postnatal programming. The aim of this paper is to discuss the relationship between pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia and possibility of CVD in the offspring. Unfortunately, due to its multifactorial nature, a clear dependency mechanism between preeclampsia and CVD is difficult to establish.

Abstract
Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is characterized by elevated circulating sFlt-1 (soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase-1), although the free circulating levels of its ligand, PlGF (placental growth factor) are not decreased. Here, we hypothesized that women with AFLP exhibit elevated PlGF production in comparison to women with preeclampsia or hemolysis elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count syndrome. Making use of the well-known mathematical formulas describing drug-receptor interactions, we established that serum total PlGF could be accurately predicted from sFlt-1 and free PlGF levels (n=42; mean calculated KD of 50 pmol/L), yielding similar values as the previously published method of thermal dissociation of the sFlt-1-PlGF complexes (r=0.94, P<0.0001). We found that median levels of free PlGF were significantly lower in women with preeclampsia (n=13; 117pg/mL) or hemolysis elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count syndrome (n=12; 59 pg/mL) compared with women without preeclampsia (n=11; 349pg/mL, P<0.0001). In contrast, median total PlGF did not differ between women with no preeclampsia, preeclampsia, and hemolysis elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count syndrome (354 versus 435 versus 344pg/mL), whereas it was markedly elevated in AFLP compared with all groups (2054 pg/mL, P<0.0001). Furthermore, in AFLP, both sFlt-1 and total PlGF declined rapidly postdelivery, with significantly higher predelivery total PlGF (n=12; median, 2054 pg/mL) than postpartum levels (n=14; median, 163pg/mL, P<0.0001), suggesting that in AFLP, PlGF is largely placenta-derived. Collectively, our findings indicate that like sFlt-1, PlGF production is significantly upregulated in AFLP, mainly originating from the placenta. Importantly, total PlGF can now be easily calculated from already available free PlGF and sFlt-1 levels, allowing subsequent evaluation of other groups in whom PlGF is altered.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is characterized by placental ischemia and hypoxia, resulting in abnormal casting of the uterine spiral artery, which is mainly caused by insufficient trophoblastic cell infiltration. A reduction in levels of growth factor-based signalling via Neuropilin-1 (NRP1) has been shown to contribute to dysfunctional trophoblast development. In this study, we showed that the RNA-binding protein, QKI5, regulated NRP1 expression and significantly improved trophoblast proliferation in vitro and in vivo. QKI5 and NRP1 expressions were significantly reduced in human PE placentas and in trophoblasts during hypoxia. Overexpression of these factors significantly improved cell proliferation and migration in vitro, in contrast to a decrease upon siRNA knockdown of QKI5 and NRP1 in HTR-8/SVneo cells. Using RIP and RNA pull-down assays, we further showed that QKI5 directly interacted with the 3'-UTR region of NRP1, to mediate cell proliferation and migration via matrix metalloprotease-9. Further, similar to NRP1, QKI5 also targets matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) involved in secretion of growth factors and its effects can be counteracted by NRP1 overexpression. In vivo studies using a PE mouse model revealed that QKI5 overexpression alleviated PE-related symptoms such as elevated blood pressure and proteinuria. Taken together, we found that QKI5 was a novel regulator, of VEGF-R/NRP1 signalling pathway functioning in trophoblast proliferation and migration, resulting in major contributors to the pathogenesis of PE. While careful evaluation of the broad implications of QKI5 expression is still necessary, this study identified QKI5 as a promising target for treatment strategies in acute PE patients.
