Abstract
Objective To investigate the association of nighttime awakenings at 12 months with the duration and efficiency of nighttime sleep at 6 years of age. Methods Data from two population-based prospective studies (The Pelotas 2004 and The Pelotas 2015 Birth Cohorts) were used. Information on nighttime awakenings was provided by mothers during the 12-month follow-up interview. Infants who awakened >3 times after sleep onset at 12 months were considered frequent wakeners. Sleep duration and sleep efficiency were obtained by actigraphy at the 6-year follow-up. Children wore the device at the wrist of the non-dominant arm continuously for 3-7 days, including at least one weekend day. Unadjusted and adjusted beta coefficients were obtained by linear regression for each cohort separately. Results 2500 children from the 2004 and 2793 from the 2015 cohort had full information on nighttime awakenings at 12 months and actigraphy at 6 years and were analyzed. Prevalence of frequent wakeners was 6.3 % and 5.9 % in the 2004 and 2015 cohort, respectively. Mean bedtime and wake-up time at 6 years were, respectively, 23:23 and 08:41 h in the 2004 cohort, and 00:10 and 09:00 h int the 2015 cohort. Nighttime sleep lasted on average 7.54 and 7.24 h respectively in the 2004 and the 2015 cohort, and the sleep efficiency was 81.1 and 82.5 % respectively. In adjusted analyses, no associations were found between awakening at 12 months and sleep duration or sleep efficiency at 6 years of age. Conclusion In both cohorts sleep duration and efficiency were below the recommendation for school-age children (respectively 9-11 h and 85 %). There was no relationship between the number of nighttime awakenings at 12 months and sleep duration or efficiency at 6 years.

Abstract
Some healthy lifestyle components have been linked with sleep disordered breathing (SDB), yet little is known about the relationship between comprehensive lifestyle factors and SDB. This study aimed to examine the healthy lifestyle with SDB in community-dwelling adults. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the Suzhou Food Consumption and Health Survey in China between 2018 and 2020. The healthy lifestyle index (HLI) was created by combining smoking, alcohol drinking, diet, physical activity, and body mass index (BMI). Its association with SDB was assessed by multiple logistic regression analysis. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were conducted to assess the robustness of our results. The final analysis included 3788 participants (2859 without SDB and 929 with SDB). In multivariable-adjusted analyses, non-smoking (OR: 0.58, 95 % CI: 0.47-0.71), non-drinking (OR: 0.55, 95 % CI: 0.45-0.68), healthy diet (OR: 0.79, 95 % CI: 0.65-0.95), and healthy BMI (OR: 0.72, 95 % CI: 0.6-0.86) were associated with SDB. Compared with participants with HLI score of 0-1, participants with HLI score of 2, 3, 4, and 5 had OR of 0.68 (95 % CI: 0.51-0.91), 0.49 (95 % CI: 0.37-0.64), 0.29 (95 % CI: 0.21-0.38), and 0.22 (95 % CI: 0.15-0.33), respectively, after adjustment for confounding factors (P-trend<0.001). An inverse dose-response relationship between HLI and SDB was also observed. The association was similar in subgroups stratified by sex, marital status, diabetes and dyslipidemia. A higher score of HLI was associated with reduced odds of SDB in Chinese adults. Our findings suggest the potential of addressing five modifiable lifestyle factors for the prevention of SDB.

Abstract
The association between sleep and the immune-endocrine system is well recognized, but the nature of that relationship is not well understood. Sleep fragmentation induces a pro-inflammatory response in peripheral tissues and brain, but it also activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, releasing glucocorticoids (GCs) (cortisol in humans and corticosterone in mice). It is unclear whether this rapid release of glucocorticoids acts to potentiate or dampen the inflammatory response in the short term. The purpose of this study was to determine whether blocking or suppressing glucocorticoid activity will affect the inflammatory response from acute sleep fragmentation (ASF). Male C57BL/6J mice were injected i.p. with either 0.9% NaCl (vehicle 1), metyrapone (a glucocorticoid synthesis inhibitor, dissolved in vehicle 1), 2% ethanol in polyethylene glycol (vehicle 2), or mifepristone (a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist, dissolved in vehicle 2) 10 min before the start of ASF or no sleep fragmentation (NSF). After 24 h, samples were collected from brain (prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus, hippocampus) and periphery (liver, spleen, heart, and epididymal white adipose tissue (EWAT)). Proinflammatory gene expression (TNF-α and IL-1β) was measured, followed by gene expression analysis. Metyrapone treatment affected pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression during ASF in some peripheral tissues, but not in the brain. More specifically, metyrapone treatment suppressed IL-1β expression in EWAT during ASF, which implies a pro-inflammatory effect of GCs. However, in cardiac tissue, metyrapone treatment increased TNF-α expression in ASF mice, suggesting an anti-inflammatory effect of GCs. Mifepristone treatment yielded more significant results than metyrapone, reducing TNF-α expression in liver (only NSF mice) and cardiac tissue during ASF, indicating a pro-inflammatory role. Conversely, in the spleen of ASF-mice, mifepristone increased pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β), demonstrating an anti-inflammatory role. Furthermore, irrespective of sleep fragmentation, mifepristone increased pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression in heart (IL-1β), pre-frontal cortex (IL-1β), and hypothalamus (IL-1β). The results provide mixed evidence for pro- and anti-inflammatory functions of corticosterone to regulate inflammatory responses to acute sleep loss.

Abstract
Sleep problems are associated with increased risk of obesity. Multiple mechanisms have been identified to support this relationship, including changes in sensory processing and food choice. Taste researchers have recently begun to explore whether changes in taste occur as a result of short-term or long-term sleep habits. A systematic review was conducted to investigate these relationships. A total of 13 studies were included in the review. Heterogeneity in both the sleep and taste measurements used was noted, and most studies failed to assess sour, bitter and umami tastes. Still, the available evidence suggests that sweet taste hedonic perception appears to be undesirably influenced by short sleep when viewed through the lens of health. That is, preferred sweetness concentration increases as sleep duration decreases. Habitual sleep and interventions curtailing sleep had minimal associations or effects on sweet taste sensitivity. Salt taste sensitivity and hedonic responses appear to be relatively unaffected by insufficient sleep, but more work is needed. Solid evidence on other taste qualities is not available at the present time.

Abstract
The development of childhood obesity is a complex process influenced by a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors, such as sleep, diet, physical activity, and socioeconomic status. Long-term solutions for decreasing the risk of childhood obesity remain elusive, despite significant advancements in promoting health and well-being in school and at home. Challenges persist in areas such as adherence to interventions, addressing underlying social determinants, and individual differences in response to treatment. Over the last decade, there has been significant progress in epigenetics, along with increased curiosity in gaining insights into how sleep and lifestyle decisions impact an individual's health. Epigenetic modifications affect the expression of genes without causing changes to the fundamental DNA sequence. In recent years, numerous research studies have explored the correlation between sleep and the epigenome, giving a better understanding of DNA methylation, histone modification, and non-coding RNAs. Although significant findings have been made about the influence of sleep on epigenetics, a notable gap exists in the literature concerning sleep-related genes specifically associated with childhood obesity. Consequently, it is crucial to delve deeper into this area to enhance our understanding. Therefore, this review primarily focuses on the connection between sleep patterns and epigenetic modifications in genes related to childhood obesity. Exploring the interplay between sleep, epigenetics, and childhood obesity can potentially contribute to improved overall health outcomes. This comprehensive review encompasses studies focusing on sleep-related genes linked to obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Both disordered eating and disturbed sleep represent significant threats to mental health. Accumulating evidence suggests that disordered eating behaviors and sleep problems co-occur. A majority of current research, however, has focused on these behaviors as components of eating disorder diagnoses, rather than investigating the independent associations of transdiagnostic disordered eating behaviors and sleep. The present study sought to examine fasting, binge eating, self-induced vomiting, laxative or diuretic misuse, and driven exercise as predictors of sleep quality complaints. METHOD An online sample of 648 U.S. adults completed the Eating Disorder Examination - Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Patient Health Care Questionnaire-2 as part of a larger parent study. RESULTS Results of a hierarchical linear regression revealed that, collectively, disordered eating behaviors predicted worse sleep quality [R2 = 0.30, F(7, 640) = 31.21, p < .001], and that both binge eating and fasting, but not other compensatory behaviors, accounted for unique variance in sleep quality after controlling for BMI and depression. CONCLUSIONS Overall, findings suggest that transdiagnostic disordered eating behaviors are associated with sleep quality complaints. Improved understanding of the specific relationships between individual eating behaviors and sleep characteristics can help refine the identification of individuals at high risk for sleep disturbance and address the potential reciprocal influence of sleep quality on disordered eating behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity and central obesity are multifactorial conditions with genetic and non-genetic (lifestyle and environmental) contributions. There is incomplete understanding of whether lifestyle modifies the translation from respective genetic risks into phenotypic obesity and central obesity, and to what extent genetic predisposition to obesity and central obesity is mediated via lifestyle factors. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study of 201,466 (out of approximately 502,000) European participants from UK Biobank and tested for interactions and mediation role of lifestyle factors (diet quality; physical activity levels; total energy intake; sleep duration, and smoking and alcohol intake) between genetic risk for obesity and central obesity. BMI-PRS and WHR-PRS are exposures and obesity and central obesity are outcomes. RESULTS Overall, 42.8% of the association between genetic predisposition to obesity and phenotypic obesity was explained by lifestyle: 0.9% by mediation and 41.9% by effect modification. A significant difference between men and women was found in central obesity; the figures were 42.1% (association explained by lifestyle), 1.4% (by mediation), and 40.7% (by modification) in women and 69.6% (association explained by lifestyle), 3.0% (by mediation), and 66.6% (by modification) in men. CONCLUSIONS A substantial proportion of the association between genetic predisposition to obesity/central obesity and phenotypic obesity/central obesity was explained by lifestyles. Future studies with repeated measures of obesity and lifestyle would be needed to clarify causation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Similar to women overall, Black women are socialized to be communal and "self-sacrificing," but unlike women from other racial/ethnic backgrounds, Black women are also socialized to be "strong" and "invulnerable." This phenomenon is labeled Superwoman schema. This study examined associations between Superwoman schema endorsement and subjective sleep quality. METHODS Participants included 405 Black women (ages 30-46). Superwoman schema was measured using a 35-item scale capturing five dimensions: obligation to present strength, suppress emotions, resistance to vulnerability, motivation to succeed, and obligation to help others. Superwoman schema overall and the five dimensions/subscales were analyzed. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to investigate overall subjective sleep quality (range: 0-19), poor sleep quality (PSQI >5), and specific sleep domains (eg, sleep duration, sleep disturbances). We fit linear and binary logistic regression models, adjusting for health-related and sociodemographic factors. RESULTS Superwoman schema dimension obligation to help others was associated with lower overall subjective sleep quality (β: .81, 95%CI=0.29, 1.32) and poor sleep quality (OR: 1.55, 95%CI=1.10, 2.19), as well as bad subjective sleep quality (OR: 1.76, 95%CI=1.18, 2.66), sleep disturbances (β: .73, 95%CI =0.07, 1.41), and daytime sleepiness (OR: 2.01, 95%CI=1.25, 3.26). Suppress emotions (OR: 1.41, 95%CI=1.01, 1.99) was associated with poor subjective sleep quality. Superwoman schema overall was associated with daytime sleepiness (OR: 2.01, 95%CI=1.06, 3.82). CONCLUSION Superwoman schema endorsement, especially obligation to help others and suppress emotions, may be important psychosocial risk factors for Black women's sleep health.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To summarize the evidence and clinical implications of weight and body composition changes during midlife in women and provide an overview of weight gain prevention and management in this population. RECENT FINDINGS Aging-related changes such as decreased energy expenditure and physical activity are important culprits for weight gain in midlife women. The hormonal changes of menopause also influence body adiposity distribution and increase central adiposity. These body changes can have health consequences including the development of cardiometabolic diseases, osteoarthritis, cancer, worsening in cognition, mental health, and menopause symptoms. Midlife women experience changes related to aging, menopause, and lifestyle which favor weight gain. Clinical practice should focus on early counseling and anticipatory guidance on the importance of dietary changes and physical activity to attenuate this phenomenon. Future research should focus on the longitudinal relationship between weight trends in midlife and health consequences and mortality.

Abstract
Sleep is hypothesized to interact with weight gain and loss; however, modelling this relationship remains elusive. Poor sleep perpetuates a cascade of cardiovascular and metabolic consequences that may not only increase risk of adiposity, but also confound weight loss efforts. We conducted a scoping review to assess the research on sleep and weight loss interventions. We searched six databases for studies of behavioural weight loss interventions that included assessments of sleep in the general, non-clinical adult human population. Our synthesis focused on dimensions of Population, Intervention, Control, and Outcomes (PICO) to identify research and knowledge gaps. We identified 35 studies that fell into one of four categories: (a) sleep at baseline as a predictor of subsequent weight loss during an intervention, (b) sleep assessments after a history of successful weight loss, (c) concomitant changes in sleep associated with weight loss and (d) experimental manipulation of sleep and resulting weight loss. There was some evidence of improvements in sleep in response to weight-loss interventions; however, randomized controlled trials of weight loss interventions tended not to report improvements in sleep when compared to controls. We conclude that baseline sleep characteristics may predict weight loss in studies of dietary interventions and that sleep does not improve because of weight loss alone. Future studies should enrol large and diverse, normal, overweight and obese short sleepers in trials to assess the efficacy of sleep as a behavioural weight loss treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the micro-longitudinal effects of duration and timing of screen-based activities on sleep within and between adolescents. METHODS Daily survey and actigraphy data from the age 15 wave of the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study were analyzed using multilevel modeling. Four hundred seventy five adolescents provided three or more days of valid daily survey and nighttime sleep data. RESULTS Within-person results showed that on days when adolescents played video games more than their daytime average ± SE (1.3 ± 1.2 hours), sleep onset (6 ± 2 minutes, p < .01) and midpoint (4 ± 2 minutes, p < .02) were delayed for each additional hour of gaming. Between-person results showed that for each hour adolescents used screens to communicate with friends across the day, sleep onset was later (11 ± 3 minutes, p < .01), sleep midpoint was later (8 ± 3 minutes, p < .01), and sleep duration was shorter (-5 ± 2 minutes, p < .03). Adolescents who used screens to communicate with friends or play video games in the hour before bed had later sleep onset (30 ± 14 minutes, p < .03) and midpoint (25 ± 13 minutes, p < .05). DISCUSSION Among adolescents, passive screen usage such as browsing the Internet or watching videos may not affect sleep timing or duration, but limiting interactive screen-based activities could protect adolescent sleep health and well-being.

Abstract
Daily routines, including in-person school and extracurricular activities, are important for maintaining healthy physical activity and sleep habits in children. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted daily routines as in-person school and activities closed to prevent spread of SARS-CoV-2. We aimed to examine and assess differences in objectively measured physical activity levels and sleep patterns from wearable sensors in children with obesity before, during, and after a period of school and extracurricular activity closures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. We compared average step count and sleep patterns (using the Mann-Whitney U Test) before and during the pandemic-associated school closures by using data from activity tracker wristbands (Garmin VivoFit 3). Data were collected from 94 children (aged 5-17) with obesity, who were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial testing a community-based lifestyle intervention for a duration of 12-months. During the period that in-person school and extracurricular activities were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, children with obesity experienced objectively-measured decreases in physical activity, and sleep duration. From March 15, 2020 to March 31, 2021, corresponding with local school closures, average daily step count decreased by 1655 steps. Sleep onset and wake time were delayed by about an hour and 45 min, respectively, while sleep duration decreased by over 12 min as compared with the pre-closure period. Step counts increased with the resumption of in-person activities. These findings provide objective evidence for parents, clinicians, and public health professionals on the importance of in-person daily activities and routines on health behaviors, particularly for children with pre-existing obesity. Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Alterations in gut microbiota composition have been associated with several conditions, and there is emerging evidence that sleep quantity and quality are associated with the composition of the gut microbiome. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the associations between several measures of sleep and the gut microbiome in a large, population-based sample. METHODS Data were collected from participants in the Survey of the Health of Wisconsin from 2016 to 2017 (N = 720). Alpha diversity was estimated using Chao1 richness, Shannon's diversity, and Inverse Simpson's diversity. Beta diversity was estimated using Bray-Curtis dissimilarity. Models for each of the alpha-diversity outcomes were calculated using linear mixed effects models. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance tests were performed to test whether gut microbiome composition differed by sleep measures. Negative binomial models were used to assess whether sleep measures were associated with individual taxa relative abundance. RESULTS Participants were a mean (SD) age of 55 (16) years and 58% were female. The sample was 83% non-Hispanic white, 10.6% non-Hispanic black, and 3.5% Hispanic. Greater actigraphy-measured night-to-night sleep duration variability, wake-after-sleep onset, lower sleep efficiency, and worse self-reported sleep quality were associated with lower microbiome richness and diversity. Sleep variables were associated with beta-diversity, including actigraphy-measured night-to-night sleep duration variability, sleep latency and efficiency, and self-reported sleep quality, sleep apnea, and napping. Relative abundance of several taxa was associated with night-to-night sleep duration variability, average sleep latency and sleep efficiency, and sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that sleep may be associated with the composition of the gut microbiome. These results contribute to the body of evidence that modifiable health habits can influence the human gut microbiome.

Abstract
Nighttime smartphone use is associated with sleep problems, which in turn have a bidirectional association with overweight. We aim to investigate whether nighttime smartphone use and sleep are related to overweight and metabolic dysfunction in adult populations. We used data from three population samples (aged 16-89) from the SmartSleep Study, which included survey data (N = 29,838), high-resolution tracking data (N = 3446), follow-up data (N = 1768), and cardiometabolic risk markers (N = 242). Frequent self-reported nighttime smartphone use was associated with 51% higher odds (95% CI: 1.32; 1.70) of overweight compared with no use. Tracked nighttime smartphone use was also associated with overweight. Similar results were found for obesity as an outcome. No consistent associations were found between nighttime smartphone use and cardiometabolic risk markers in a small subsample of healthy young women. Poor sleep quality (vs. good sleep quality) was associated with overweight (OR = 1.19, 85% CI: 1.10; 1.28). Overall, frequent nighttime smartphone use was consistently associated with overweight and a higher BMI across diverse population samples. The bidirectional interplay between nighttime smartphone use, sleep, and overweight may create a vicious circle of metabolic dysfunction over time. Therefore, nighttime smartphone use may be a potential target point for public health interventions to reduce overweight at the population level.

Abstract
Chronic respiratory disease can exacerbate the normal physiological changes in ventilation observed in healthy individuals during sleep, leading to sleep-disordered breathing, nocturnal hypoventilation, sleep disruption and chronic respiratory failure. Therefore, patients with obesity, slowly and rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease and chronic obstructive airways disease report poor sleep quality. Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is a complex intervention used to treat sleep-disordered breathing and nocturnal hypoventilation with overnight physiological studies demonstrating improvement in sleep-disordered breathing and nocturnal hypoventilation, and clinical trials demonstrating improved outcomes for patients. However, the impact on subjective and objective sleep quality is dependent on the tools used to measure sleep quality and the patient population. As home NIV becomes more commonly used, there is a need to conduct studies focused on sleep quality, and the relationship between sleep quality and health-related quality of life, in all patient groups, in order to allow the clinician to provide clear patient-centred information.

STUDY OBJECTIVES To test associations between neighborhood social, built, and ambient environment characteristics and multidimensional sleep health in Hispanic/Latino adults. METHODS Data were from San Diego-based Hispanic/Latino adults mostly of Mexican heritage enrolled in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (N = 342). Home addresses were geocoded to ascertain neighborhood characteristics of greenness, walkability (density of intersections, retail spaces, and residences), socioeconomic deprivation (e.g. lower income, lower education), social disorder (e.g. vacant buildings, crime), traffic density, and air pollution (PM 2.5) in the Study of Latinos Communities and Surrounding Areas Study. Sleep dimensions of regularity, satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration were measured by self-report or actigraphy approximately 2 years later. Multivariable regression models accounting for study design (stratification and clustering) were used to examine associations of neighborhood variables with individual sleep dimensions and a multidimensional sleep health composite score. RESULTS Neighborhood characteristics were not significantly associated with the multidimensional sleep health composite, and there were few significant associations with individual sleep dimensions. Greater levels of air pollution (B = 9.03, 95% CI: 1.16, 16.91) were associated with later sleep midpoint, while greater social disorder (B = -6.90, 95% CI: -13.12, -0.67) was associated with earlier sleep midpoint. Lower walkability was associated with more wake after sleep onset (B = -3.58, 95% CI: -7.07, -0.09). CONCLUSIONS Living in neighborhoods with lower walkability and greater air pollution was associated with worse sleep health, but otherwise findings were largely null. Future research should test these hypotheses in settings with greater variability and investigate mechanisms of these associations.

Abstract
There has been a recent push to focus sleep research less on disordered sleep and more on the dimensional sleep health. Sleep health incorporates several dimensions of sleep: chronotype, efficiency, daytime alertness, duration, regularity, and satisfaction with sleep. A previous study demonstrated sleep health domains correlate only moderately with each other at the genomic level (|rGs| = 0.11-0.51) and show unique relationships with psychiatric domains (controlling for shared variances, duration, alertness, and non-insomnia independently related to a factor for internalizing psychopathology). Of the domains assessed, circadian preference was the least genetically correlated with all other facets of sleep health. This pattern is important because it suggests sleep health should be considered a multifaceted construct rather than a unitary construct. Prior genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have vastly increased our knowledge of the biological underpinnings of specific sleep traits but have only focused on univariate analyses. We present the first multivariate GWAS of sleep and circadian health (multivariate circadian preference, efficiency, and alertness factors, and three single-indicator factors of insomnia, duration, and regularity) using genomic structural equation modeling. We replicated loci found in prior sleep GWASs, but also discovered "novel" loci for each factor and found little evidence for genomic heterogeneity. While we saw overlapping genomic enrichment in subcortical brain regions and shared associations with external traits, much of the genetic architecture (loci, mapped genes, and enriched pathways) was diverse among sleep domains. These results confirm sleep health as a family of correlated but genetically distinct domains, which has important health implications.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To assess for associations between sleeping more than or less than recommended by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), and self-reported insomnia, with brain structure. METHODS Data from the UK Biobank cohort were analyzed (N between 9K and 32K, dependent on availability, aged 44 to 82 years). Sleep measures included self-reported adherence to NSF guidelines on sleep duration (sleeping between 7 and 9 hours per night), and self-reported difficulty falling or staying asleep (insomnia). Brain structural measures included global and regional cortical or subcortical morphometry (thickness, surface area, volume), global and tract-related white matter microstructure, brain age gap (difference between chronological age and age estimated from brain scan), and total volume of white matter lesions. RESULTS Longer-than-recommended sleep duration was associated with lower overall grey and white matter volumes, lower global and regional cortical thickness and volume measures, higher brain age gap, higher volume of white matter lesions, higher mean diffusivity globally and in thalamic and association fibers, and lower volume of the hippocampus. Shorter-than-recommended sleep duration was related to higher global and cerebellar white matter volumes, lower global and regional cortical surface areas, and lower fractional anisotropy in projection fibers. Self-reported insomnia was associated with higher global gray and white matter volumes, and with higher volumes of the amygdala, hippocampus, and putamen. CONCLUSIONS Sleeping longer than recommended by the NSF is associated with a wide range of differences in brain structure, potentially indicative of poorer brain health. Sleeping less than recommended is distinctly associated with lower cortical surface areas. Future studies should assess the potential mechanisms of these differences and investigate long sleep duration as a putative marker of brain health.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE To examine the association between light at night (LAN) and multiple sleep health dimensions. METHODS Among 47 765 Sister Study participants, indoor LAN (TV on in the room, light(s) on in room, light from outside the room, nightlight, no light) and sleep dimensions were self-reported at baseline (2003-2009). We used Poisson regression with robust variance to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the cross-sectional associations between LAN and short sleep duration (<7 hours/night), insomnia symptoms (difficulty falling or staying asleep), frequent napping (≥3 naps/week), inconsistent sleep/wake time (differed day-to-day and week-to-week), sleep debt (≥2 hours between longest and shortest duration), recent sleep medication use, and a cumulative poor sleep score (≥3 poor sleep dimensions). Population-attributable risks (PARs) were determined for any light exposure vs. none by race/ethnicity. RESULTS Compared to sleeping with no light in the bedroom, sleeping with a TV on was associated with a higher prevalence of most dimensions of poor sleep (e.g. short sleep duration: PR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.32 to 1.45; inconsistent sleep/wake time: PR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.44 to 1.66; sleep debt: PR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.29 to 1.44; poor sleep score: PR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.48-1.68). PARs tended to be higher for non-Hispanic black women compared to non-Hispanic white women. CONCLUSIONS Sleeping with a TV on was associated with poor sleep health among US women, and non-Hispanic black women may be disproportionately burdened.

Abstract
Background An increasing body of evidence suggests a profound interrelation between the microbiome and sleep-related concerns. Nevertheless, current observational studies can merely establish their correlation, leaving causality unexplored. Study objectives To ascertain whether specific gut microbiota are causally linked to seven sleep-related characteristics and propose potential strategies for insomnia prevention. Methods The study employed an extensive dataset of gut microbiota genetic variations from the MiBioGen alliance, encompassing 18,340 individuals. Taxonomic classification was conducted, identifying 131 genera and 196 bacterial taxa for analysis. Sleep-related phenotype (SRP) data were sourced from the IEU OpenGWAS project, covering traits such as insomnia, chronotype, and snoring. Instrumental variables (IVs) were selected based on specific criteria, including locus-wide significance, linkage disequilibrium calculations, and allele frequency thresholds. Statistical methods were employed to explore causal relationships, including inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted Mode. Sensitivity analyses, pleiotropy assessments, and Bonferroni corrections ensured result validity. Reverse causality analysis and adherence to STROBE-MR guidelines were conducted to bolster the study's rigor. Results Bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis reveals a causative interplay between selected gut microbiota and sleep-related phenotypes. Notably, outcomes from the rigorously Bonferroni-corrected examination illuminate profound correlations amid precise compositions of the intestinal microbiome and slumber-associated parameters. Elevated abundance within the taxonomic ranks of class Negativicutes and order Selenomonadales was markedly associated with heightened susceptibility to severe insomnia (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.02-1.05, p = 0.0001). Conversely, the augmented representation of the phylum Lentisphaerae stands in concord with protracted sleep duration (OR = 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01-1.04, p = 0.0005). Furthermore, heightened exposure to the genus Senegalimassilia exhibits the potential to ameliorate the manifestation of snoring symptoms (OR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.96-0.99, p = 0.0001). Conclusion This study has unveiled the causal relationship between gut microbiota and SRPs, bestowing significant latent value upon future endeavors in both foundational research and clinical therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Skipping meals is linked to negative cardiometabolic health outcomes. Few studies have examined the effects of breakfast skipping after disruptive life events, like job loss. The present analyses examine whether sleep timing, duration, and continuity are associated with breakfast eating among 186 adults who recently (past 90 days) experienced involuntary unemployment from the Assessing Daily Activity Patterns Through Occupational Transitions (ADAPT) study. METHODS We conducted both cross-sectional and 18-month longitudinal analyses to assess the relationship between actigraphic sleep after job loss and breakfast eating. RESULTS Later sleep timing was associated with a lower percentage of days breakfast was eaten at baseline (B = -0.09, SE = 0.02, P < .001) and longitudinally over 18 months (estimate = -0.04; SE = 0.02; P < .05). No other sleep indices were associated with breakfast consumption cross-sectionally or prospectively. CONCLUSIONS Unemployed adults with a delay in sleep timing are more likely to skip breakfast than adults with an advancement in sleep timing. Future studies are necessary to test chronobiological mechanisms by which sleep timing might impact breakfast eating. With the understanding that sleep timing is linked to breakfast eating, the advancement of sleep timing may provide a pathway for the promotion of breakfast eating, ultimately preventing cardiometabolic disease.

Abstract
Due to insufficient treatment options for insomnia, effective solutions are urgently needed. We evaluated the effects of a CBT-I-based app combining sleep training with subjective and objective sleep monitoring on (i) sleep and (ii) subjective-objective sleep discrepancies (SOSD). Fifty-seven volunteers (20-76 years; MAge = 45.67 ± 16.38; 39 female) suffering from sleep problems were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG, n = 28) or a waitlist control group (CG, n = 29). During the 6-week app phase, the EG used the CBT-I-based programme and a heart rate sensor for daily sleep monitoring and -feedback, while the CG used sleep monitoring only. Sleep was measured (i) subjectively via questionnaires (Insomnia Severity Index, ISI; Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI), (ii) objectively via ambulatory polysomnography (PSG), and (iii) continuously via heart-rate sensor and sleep diaries. Data revealed interactions for ISI (p = 0.003, ƞ2 part = 0.11) and PSQI (p = 0.050, ƞ2 part = 0.05), indicating training-specific improvements in EG, yet not in CG. While PSG-derived outcomes appear to be less training-specific, a tendential reduction in wake after sleep onset (WASO) was found in EG (p = 0.061, d = 0.55). Regarding changes in SOSD, the results indicate improvements during the app phase (EG) for sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency, and WASO (p ≤ 0.022, d ≥ 0.46); for total sleep time both groups showed a SOSD reduction. The findings indicate beneficial effects of a novel smartphone app on sleep and SOSD. More scientific evaluation of such digital programmes is needed to ultimately help in reducing the gap in non-pharmacological insomnia treatment.

Abstract
Background: Although the literature suggests that skipping breakfast, insufficient sleep, and reduced physical activity are associated with childhood obesity their co-influence and their in-between interactions on weight status have rarely been studied. Aim: To examine the co-influence of breakfast eating habits, sleep duration, and physical activity on the weight status of children 10-12 years old from several schools of Greece. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1688 students in Greece, during 2014-2016. Children's Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated and classified according to the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) classification. Logistic regression models and path analysis were used. Results: Overweight/obesity prevalence was higher in boys (32.5% vs. 20.4%; p < 0.001). Average sleep duration decreased the odds of overweight/obesity [OR (95% CI): 0.86 (0.76, 0.97)] independently of the frequency of breakfast habit. Interaction between sleep duration with breakfast habit (p = 0.002) and physical activity (p < 0.001) was observed. Path analysis showed a negative association of BMI with sleep duration (standardized beta = -0.095, p < 0.001). A third-order interaction between breakfast habit, sleep duration, and physical activity revealed that daily breakfast eating along with adequate sleep and moderate/adequate physical activity levels, decreased the odds of over-weight/obesity by 55% [OR 0.45, 95% CI (0.27, 0.72)]. Conclusion: Although sleep duration is inversely associated with weight status independently of breakfast habit, the co-influence of adequate sleep duration with frequent breakfast eating and moderate/adequate physical activity seems to be a profoundly higher associated as a result of synergy against childhood obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional study investigated the factors associated with weight gain ≥ 10 kg after 20 years of age in the general Japanese population, with a focus on the number of teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS We included individuals aged ≥ 40 years from Yamagata prefecture, Japan from 2017-2021. A postal survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire; 5,940 participants were included in the final analysis. The questionnaire included items on lifestyle factors, medical history, physical and mental conditions, oral health, and dietary intake. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent associations between weight gain ≥ 10 kg after 20 years of age and various parameters; adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated. RESULTS Less than 20 teeth, male sex, drinking habit frequency, eating very fast or fast, and a higher frequency of eating-away-from-home were significant factors associated with weight gain ≥ 10 kg after 20 years of age; individuals with < 20 versus > 20 teeth exhibited a 1.35-fold higher OR (95% CI 1.15-1.59; p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that having < 20 teeth may affect weight gain ≥ 10 kg after 20 years of age. However, owing to the cross-sectional study design, causality could not be determined. Therefore, maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviors to avoid tooth loss may also affect weight gain ≥ 10 kg after 20 years of age. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Having < 20 teeth has the potential to affect long-term weight gain after 20 years of age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Caregiving demands may influence caregivers' sleep duration and quality, which are essential for optimal health. We aimed to examine the association between caregiving status and sleep deficiency (i.e., short sleep duration and/or poor quality) and identify factors associated with sleep deficiency among caregivers. METHODS This secondary analysis used data from 3870 adults living in the United States, obtained from the 2019 Health Information National Trends Survey. Multinomial logistic regressions were performed to examine the association between caregiving status (i.e., caregivers vs. non-caregivers) and sleep status (i.e., normal duration-good quality [optimal sleep, reference], short duration-good quality, normal duration-poor quality, and short duration-poor quality), and to identify caregiving-related factors associated with sleep deficiency in the caregiver group. RESULTS Compared to non-caregivers, caregivers were more likely to report short sleep duration (<7 hours) with good quality sleep (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 1.566, 95% CI [1.238, 1.980]) or poor quality sleep (RRR = 1.376, 95% CI [1.034, 1.832]) than the optimal sleep status. Caregivers providing care for ≥20 hours per week (vs. <20 hours) and providing care to individuals with dementia (vs. no dementia caregiving) were 2.8 times more likely to report normal sleep duration with poor sleep quality than optimal sleep (RRR = 2.796, 95% CI [1.125, 6.950]; RRR = 2.776, 95% CI [1.154, 6.675], respectively). CONCLUSION The findings of a higher risk of sleep deficiency among caregivers suggest that health care providers need to assess both caregivers' sleep duration and quality status. Interventions tailored to the caregiving context are also warranted.

Abstract
Introduction Childhood is an important stage for socio-emotional development. Understanding the associations of lifestyle habits with the healthy development of social and emotional skills is crucial for better interventions early in life. This study aims to analyze the association between sleep and socio-emotional development in toddlers aged 12 to 36 months and examine whether weight mediated these associations. Methods This study is part of a cluster randomized controlled trial developed in Portuguese childcare centers. A sample of 344 children (176 females) enrolled in the study. Participants' anthropometrics were measured while at childcare centers using standardized procedures. Body mass index (BMI) was computed as the body weight/height2 (kg/m2) ratio. Sleep quality was collected with the Tayside Children's Sleep Questionnaire, a 10-item scale that evaluates the child's ability to initiate and maintain sleep. Two additional questions regarding sleep duration were added. Parental questionnaires assessed the child's sex and date of birth, socioeconomic status, and total energy intake (TEI). Motor (fine and gross) was assessed using Bayley-III scales and socio-emotional (SE) by the Greenspan Social-Emotional Growth Chart questionnaire. Linear regression models were used to examine the associations between sleep (duration and quality) and SE with adjustments for sex, age, BMI, mothers' education, motor development, and TEI. Mediation analysis was conducted using path analysis. Results SE development was significantly associated with nighttime sleep duration even when adjusted for confounders (β = 0.223; 95% CI: 0.001, 0.004 and β = 0.168; 0.0003, 0.003; respectively). Sleep quality was not significantly associated with SE development, and the weight did not explain the associations between sleep and SE development. Conclusion This study supports that sleep duration is directly associated with SE development in toddlers. From a public health perspective, sleep duration should be prioritized in intervention programs to improve socio-emotional development early in life.

Abstract
Sleep quality is linked to disordered eating, obesity, depression, and weight-related functioning. Most research, however, has focused on clinical populations. The current study investigated relationships between sleep quality, disordered eating, and patterns of functioning in a community sample to better understand relationships among modifiable health behaviors. Participants (N = 648) recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk completed assessments of eating, depression, weight-related functioning, and sleep. Self-reported height and weight were used to calculate body mass index (M = 27.3, SD = 6.9). Participants were on average 37.6 years (SD = 12.3), primarily female (65.4%), and White, not Hispanic (72.7%). Over half of participants endorsed poor sleep quality, and average sleep scores were above the clinical cutoff for poor sleep quality. Sleep scores were significantly positively correlated with disordered eating, depression, and weight-related functioning, even after adjusting for age, body mass index, and sex. Multivariate regression models predicting weight-related functioning and depression showed that both sleep quality and disordered eating independently predicted depression. Sleep quality did not independently predict weight-related functioning; however, disordered eating did. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to assess sleep behaviors, disordered eating, and weight-related functioning in a community sample of weight diverse participants. Results indicate that most participants endorsed poor sleep quality, which was associated with disordered eating patterns, including binge eating and poorer weight-related functioning, even after controlling for body mass index, highlighting that this relationship exists across the weight spectrum. These results speak to the importance of health behavior assessment and intervention within nonclinical samples.Level of evidence Level III: evidence obtained from well-designed cohort or case-control analytic studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to increase awareness by determining the risk of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in individuals aged 18 years and above. METHODS The study is a descriptive and cross-sectional study. A total of 633 individuals aged 18 years and above participated in the study. The data were collected online from individuals in the form of describing the demographic characteristics of individuals and with the Berlin survey. The IBM SPSS statistics 26.0 program was used in the analysis of the data. RESULTS In this study, 38.9% of individuals were found to be at high risk for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. A significant relationship was found between the risk of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and gender, age, body mass index, education level, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, hypertension, presence of cardiovascular diseases, and smoking (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The results of this study showed that male gender, increasing age, obesity, presence of chronic disease, and smoking increase the risk of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Defining the risk of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, especially in risky groups, will be effective in planning health care, increasing the effectiveness of treatment, and improving the quality of life. It is recommended to include this diagnosis in health care protocols and to expand its use in order to plan and repeat trainings that will emphasize its importance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) on cardiometabolic health biomarkers. METHOD Cochrane CENTRAL, Embase, Medline, and PsycINFO were searched, and records were screened by two independent reviewers. Inclusion criteria were adult population, delivery of CBT-I, randomized controlled trial design, ≥1 cardiometabolic health outcome, and peer-review. Hedge's g effect sizes were calculated, and the quality of the evidence was appraised using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool. RESULTS After screening 1649 records, 15 studies were included (total N = 2067). Inflammatory markers (CRP, IL-6, TNF-α), blood pressure (SBP, DBP), and glycemic regulation (HbA1c) were most frequently reported (in ≥3 studies each). HbA1c and CRP were reduced in the CBT-I group compared to the control group (in 3 studies each). Effects varied or were null for IL-6, TNF-α, SBP, and DBP. Six studies were judged as low, four as moderate, and five as high risk of bias. CONCLUSION CBT-I was most consistently associated with improved HbA1c and CRP, which are relatively temporally stable, suggesting influences on enduring habits rather than short-term behavior changes. High risk of bias limits the interpretation of findings. Methodologically adequate studies are needed to better understand cardiometabolic effects of CBT-I.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Healthcare workers face an elevated risk of burnout, sleep disorders, and mental health issues, potentially stemming from the misalignment of their circadian rhythm due to nonstandard work schedules. This cross-sectional survey aims to examine the connections between sleep timing, workplace well-being (including burnout and absenteeism), and mental health outcomes (specifically depression and poor sleep) in healthcare workers. Additionally, the survey takes into account individual and professional factors, as well as the interaction with work schedules. METHODS The study encompasses 4,971 healthcare workers from both public and private healthcare facilities in France, including nurses, nursing assistants, and physicians recruited during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Maslach Burnout Inventory assesses burnout, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale measures depression, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index evaluates poor sleep. Sleep timing is categorized into morning, neutral, and evening timing, referred to as midsleep. Multivariate logistic regression analysis is conducted to explore the relationships between sleep timing and burnout, depression, and poor sleep, while adjusting for various factors. RESULTS The findings reveal that 56.5% of participants experience burnout, 29.8% report depression, and 64.5% report poor sleep. Nurses and nursing assistants exhibit a higher prevalence of poor sleep. Morning sleep timing is associated with burnout among those with fixed schedules and with depression among those with shift schedules. Among physicians, both morning and evening sleep timing are associated with depression, while morning sleep timing is linked to poor sleep across all subgroups. INTERPRETATION This study suggests that the misalignment between healthcare workers' internal circadian rhythm and their work schedules may contribute to an increased risk of burnout, depression, and poor sleep. Occupational health services and policymakers should recognize the potential for enhancing workplace well-being and mental health outcomes by enabling healthcare workers to maintain sleep schedules that accommodate their needs.

Abstract
Objectives: We aim to investigate the correlation between sleep and metabolic syndrome (MS) among a community population 45 years of age and older in China. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of 9096 participants from China health and longitudinal study was carried out. MS was defined by consensus criteria. Sleep durations were assessed by self-reported questionnaire. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MS were obtained using multivariable-adjusted regression analysis. Results: Long habitual daytime sleep had a positive influence on MS (OR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.10-2.06). For elderly, short daytime sleep significantly increased risk of MS (OR = 2.14, 95% CI = 1.25-3.67). Females with long daytime sleep was associated with increased risk of MS (OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.04-2.29). Conclusions: Daytime sleep significantly increased risk of MS for middle-aged and elderly Chinese. The hazard role of daytime sleep on MS was various between age and sex groups. Results of this study needed to be verified by future longitudinal studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the association between modifiable behavioral risk factors for non-communicable diseases and sleep parameters in Brazilian adolescents. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study that used data from the RPS Cohort Consortium, São Luís, Brazil for the follow-up of adolescents aged 18-19 years (n = 2,515). The outcomes were excessive daytime sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale - ESS) and sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index - PSQI). The exposures of interest were the behavioral risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs): screen time, physical inactivity, alcohol, smoking, illicit drugs, caffeine intake, and consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. Excess weight was considered a possible mediator of this association between the exposures of interest and the outcomes. The models were analyzed by modeling with structural equations. RESULTS Physical inactivity (standardized coefficient, SC = 0.112; p = 0.001), higher consumption of alcohol (SC = 0.168; p = 0.019) and of sugar-sweetened beverages (SC = 0.128; p < 0.001) were associated with excessive daytime sleepiness in adolescents; better socioeconomic status was also associated with this outcome (SC = 0.128; p < 0.001). Physical inactivity (SC = 0.147; p < 0.001) and higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SC = 0.089; p = 0.003) were also associated with poor sleep quality. Overweight was neither a mediator nor associated with sleep quality or excessive daytime sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS The main modifiable behavioral risk factors for NCDs are associated with worse sleep parameters already in adolescence, which serves as a warning toward the accumulation of risks for sleep disorders in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No previous systematic review or meta-analysis has evaluated the effect of optimal time-restricted eating (TRE) interventions on cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors. This meta-analysis aimed to illustrate the effect of a suitable TRE on CVD risk factors. METHODS A systematic review was performed to identify trials reporting the effects of TRE, relative to non-diet controls, on CVD risk factors in humans. A random-effects model was used to evaluate the effect sizes, and the results are expressed as the mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses were performed to examine the influence of the study population, age, duration of intervention, and baseline mean BMI on the CVD indexes. RESULTS TRE intervention significantly reduced systolic pressure (SBP) (MD: -3.45 mmHg; 95%CI:(-6.20,-0.71) mmHg; P = 0.01), body weight (MD: -1.63 Kg; 95%CI:(-2.09,-1.17) Kg; P<0.001), body mass index (BMI) (MD: -0.47 Kg/m2; 95% CI: (-0.72, -0.22) Kg/m2; P<0.001), and fat mass (MD: -0.98 Kg; 95% CI: (-1.51,-0.44) Kg; P<0.001), and reduced blood glucose levels. Based on the results of subgroup analysis, this meta-analysis identified the optimal TRE for BP (with a 6 h feeding window, last eating time point at 6-8 PM, and male participants with obesity and aged ≥ 45 years), obesity (with a 6 h feeding window, last eating time point at 6-8 PM, and female participants aged ≥ 45 years), lipids (with an 8 h feeding window, last eating time point at 6-8 PM, and male participants aged < 45 years), and glucose (with a 10-12 h feeding window, last eating time point before 6 PM, and female participants aged < 45years). CONCLUSIONS Relative to a non-diet control, TRE is effective for the improvement of CVD risks. Moreover, individual TRE interventions should be developed for different populations to achieve the most effective health improvement for CVD risk factors.

Abstract
Poor sleep is a prevalent issue among healthcare workers and can have detrimental effects on their health. Various individual and professional factors, including the work environment, may contribute to poor sleep. However, only a limited number of studies have examined the simultaneous influence of these factors. Hence, we conducted a nationwide survey among graduated healthcare workers in both public and private healthcare facilities in France. The aim was to analyze the association between poor sleep, assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (>5), and the work environment, evaluated using the Job Content Questionnaire. The study encompassed 10,087 healthcare workers, among whom 6,540 (64.8%) reported experiencing poor sleep. Nurses, health executives, nursing assistants, and other allied healthcare professionals were more likely to experience poor sleep compared to physicians. Through multivariate regression analysis, we identified several aspects of the work environment associated with an increased likelihood of poor sleep. These factors included high speed and quantity of work, high complexity and intensity, high fragmentation and unpredictability, limited decision-making latitude, underutilization of skills, lack of emotional support from colleagues, and sustained workplace bullying. These findings highlight the significance of considering the work environment in addressing sleep issues among healthcare professionals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of individual sleep domains and multidimensional sleep health with current overweight or obesity and 5-year weight change in adults. METHODS We estimated sleep regularity, quality, timing, onset latency, sleep interruptions, duration, and napping using validated questionnaires. We calculated multidimensional sleep health using a composite score (total number of "good" sleep health indicators) and sleep phenotypes derived from latent class analysis. Logistic regression was used to examine associations between sleep and overweight or obesity. Multinomial regression was used to examine associations between sleep and weight change (gain, loss, or maintenance) over a median of 1.66 years. RESULTS The sample included 1016 participants with a median age of 52 (IQR = 37-65), who primarily identified as female (78%), White (79%), and college-educated (74%). We identified 3 phenotypes: good, moderate, and poor sleep. More regularity of sleep, sleep quality, and shorter sleep onset latency were associated with 37%, 38%, and 45% lower odds of overweight or obesity, respectively. The addition of each good sleep health dimension was associated with 16% lower adjusted odds of having overweight or obesity. The adjusted odds of overweight or obesity were similar between sleep phenotypes. Sleep, individual or multidimensional sleep health, was not associated with weight change. CONCLUSIONS Multidimensional sleep health showed cross-sectional, but not longitudinal, associations with overweight or obesity. Future research should advance our understanding of how to assess multidimensional sleep health to understand the relationship between all aspects of sleep health and weight over time.

Abstract
Background Sleep plays a complex role in metabolic regulation, and the underlying linkage has not been clearly defined. We investigated the association between sleep duration and metabolic disorders in Filipino immigrants in Korea. Methods We analyzed 410 participants from the 2014 to 2016 baseline population of the Filipino Women's Diet and Health Study. Usual sleep duration was self-reported, and anthropometric parameters were measured directly. Blood glucose, lipid, and insulin levels were examined from fasting serum samples. We used general linear models to acquire least squares (LS) means and logistic regression models to calculate odds ratios to test the cross-sectional association between sleep duration and metabolic markers with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results We found a statistically significant linear association between increased sleep duration and elevated triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). LS means (95% CI) of <5, 5-6, 7-8, and >8 hours of sleep were 81.74 (71.43 to 93.54), 85.15 (76.65 to 94.59), 86.33 (77.84 to 95.75), and 105.22 (88.07 to 125.71), respectively, for triglycerides (P trend=0.049) and 174.52 (165.02 to 184.57), 180.50 (172.79 to 188.55), 182.51 (174.83 to 190.53), and 190.16 (176.61 to 204.74), respectively, for total cholesterol (P trend= 0.042). For LDL-C, the LS means (95% CI) were 97.34 (88.80 to 106.71), 100.69 (93.73 to 108.18), 104.47 (97.35 to 112.10), and 109.43 (96.94 to 123.54), respectively (P trend=0.047). Statistical significance persisted after additional adjustment for body mass index. The association with triglycerides was limited to current alcohol drinkers (P interaction=0.048). Conclusion Longer sleep duration was associated with increased triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL-C levels. The association with triglycerides was more pronounced among moderate alcohol drinkers.

Abstract
Daily routines, including in-person school and extracurricular activities, are important for maintaining healthy physical activity and sleep habits in children. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted daily routines as in-person school and activities closed to prevent spread of SARS-CoV-2. We aimed to examine and assess differences in objectively measured physical activity levels and sleep patterns from wearable sensors in children with obesity before, during, and after a period of school and extracurricular activity closures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. We compared average step count and sleep patterns (using the Mann Whitney U Test) before and during the pandemic-associated school closures by using data from activity tracker wristbands (Garmin VivoFit 3). Data was collected from 94 children (aged 5-17) with obesity, who were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial testing a community-based lifestyle intervention for a duration of 12-months. During the period that in-person school and extracurricular activities were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, children with obesity experienced objectively-measured decreases in physical activity, and sleep duration. From March 15, 2020 to March 31, 2021, corresponding with local school closures, average daily step count decreased by 1,655 steps. Sleep onset and wake time were delayed by about an hour and 45 minutes, respectively, while sleep duration decreased by over 12 minutes as compared with the pre-closure period. Step counts increased with the resumption of in-person activities. These findings provide objective evidence for parents, clinicians, and public health professionals on the importance of in-person daily activities and routines on health behaviors, particularly for children with pre-existing obesity. We demonstrate the utility of wearable sensors in objectively measuring longitudinal physical activity and sleep behavior patterns in children with obesity and in quantifying changes in their health behaviors due to disruption of structured, daily routines following in-person school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of baseline nocturnal sleep duration and sleep changes with functional disability in middle-aged and elderly Chinese. METHODS Data for this study were collected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) from baseline (2011) to the Wave 3 follow-up (2018). 8361 participants free of IADL disability in 2011 and aged ≥ 45 years old were recruited and prospectively followed till 2018 to analyze the association between baseline nocturnal sleep duration and IADL disability. Of these 8361 participants, a total of 6948 participants had no IADL disability at the first three follow-up visits and completed the 2018 follow-up to analyze the association between nocturnal sleep changes and IADL disability. Nocturnal sleep duration (hours) was self-reported at baseline. The coefficient of variation (CV) of nocturnal sleep duration at baseline and three follow-up visits was used to calculate sleep changes and classified into mild, moderate, and severe degrees by the quantiles. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze the association of baseline nocturnal sleep duration with IADL disability, and the binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the association of nocturnal sleep changes with IADL disability. RESULTS Among the 8361 participants of 50237.5 person-years follow-up with a median follow-up of 7 years, 2158 (25.81%) participants developed IADL disabilities. Higher risks of IADL disability were observed among participants with sleep duration <7 h [HR(95%): 1.23(1.09-1.38)], 8∼<9 h [HR(95%): 1.05(1.00-1.32)] and ≥9 h [HR(95%): 1.21(1.01-1.45)] compared to those with 7∼<8 h. Among the 6948 participants, a total of 745 (10.72%) participants finally developed IADL disabilities. Compared with mild nocturnal sleep changes, moderate [OR(95%): 1.48(1.19-1.84)] and severe [OR(95%): 2.43(1.98-3.00)] sleep changes increased the probability of IADL disability. The restricted cubic spline model showed that a higher degree of nocturnal sleep changes was associated with a greater probability of IADL disability. CONCLUSION Both insufficient and excessive nocturnal sleep duration were associated with higher risk of IADL disability in middle-aged and elderly adults, independent of the participants' gender, age, and napping habits. Higher nocturnal sleep changes were associated with a higher probability of disability in IADL. These findings highlight the importance of appropriate and stable nocturnal sleep, and the need to pay attention to population differences in the impact of nocturnal sleep duration on health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although poor sleep health is associated with weight gain and obesity in the non-pregnant population, research on the impact of sleep health on weight change among pregnant people using a multidimensional sleep health framework is needed. OBJECTIVES This secondary data analysis of the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcome Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-be Sleep Duration and Continuity Study (n = 745) examined associations between mid-pregnancy sleep health indicators, multidimensional sleep health and gestational weight gain (GWG). METHODS Sleep domains (i.e. regularity, nap duration, timing, efficiency and duration) were assessed via actigraphy between 16 and 21 weeks of gestation. We defined 'healthy' sleep in each domain with empirical thresholds. Multidimensional sleep health was based on sleep profiles derived from latent class analysis and composite score defined as the sum of healthy sleep domains. Total GWG, the difference between self-reported pre-pregnancy weight and the last measured weight before delivery, was converted to z-scores using gestational age- and BMI-specific charts. GWG was defined as low (<-1 SD), moderate (-1 or +1 SD) and high (>+1 SD). RESULTS Nearly 50% of the participants had a healthy sleep profile (i.e. healthy sleep in most domains), whereas others had a sleep profile defined as having varying degrees of unhealthy sleep in each domain. The individual sleep domains were associated with a 20%-30% lower risk of low or high GWG. Each additional healthy sleep indicator was associated with a 10% lower risk of low (vs. moderate), but not high, GWG. Participants with late timing, long duration and low efficiency (vs. healthy) profiles had the strongest risk of low GWG (relative risk 1.5, 95% confidence interval 0.9, 2.4). Probabilistic bias analysis suggested that most associations between individual sleep health indicators, sleep health profiles and GWG were biased towards the null. CONCLUSIONS Future research should determine whether sleep health is an intervention target for healthy GWG.

Abstract
Sleep-wake and fasting-feeding are tightly coupled behavioral states that require coordination between several brain regions. The mammalian lateral hypothalamus (LH) is a functionally and anatomically complex brain region harboring heterogeneous cell populations that regulate sleep, feeding, and energy metabolism. Significant attempts were made to understand the cellular and circuit bases of LH actions. Rapid advancements in genetic and electrophysiological manipulation help to understand the role of discrete LH cell populations. The opposing action of LH orexin/hypocretin and melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) neurons on metabolic sensing and sleep-wake regulation make them the candidate to explore in detail. This review surveys the molecular, genetic, and neuronal components of orexin and MCH signaling in the regulation of sleep and metabolism.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep duration (SD) and stroke, and examine the effects of SD on stroke with or without metabolic syndrome (Mets) and its components among the adult residents in Shanghai, China. Participants and Methods A total of 20,245 participants (51.72% male, mean age 44.66 years) were included from Shanghai Chronic Disease and Risk Factors Surveillance (SCDRFS) in 2017. The weighted logistic regressions were performed to examine the associations between SD and stroke in different status of Mets and its components. Results The mean SD was 7.51±0.03 h/d. After adjusting for all the potential factors, SD<6 h/d (OR=1.73, 95% CI: 1.35-2.20) or ≥10 h/d (OR=1.66, 95% CI: 1.08-2.57) was significantly positively associated with stoke in the total participants; moreover, in the non-Mets group, only SD<6 h/d (OR=1.77, 95% CI: 1.19, 2.64) significantly increased the risk of stroke; while, in the Mets group, SD<6 h/d (OR=1.80, 95% CI:1.17-2.76) and ≥10 h/d (OR=1.97, 95% CI: 1.00-3.88) both had a positive significantly association with stoke. In addition, the effects of SD<6 h/d on stroke were more pronounced among those with high WC (OR=2.24, 95% CI: 1.40-3.58) and high TG (OR=2.60, 95% CI: 1.86-3.62), and the effects of SD≥10 h/d on stroke were more evident among those with high TG (OR=2.28, 95% CI: 1.02-5.08) and high FBG (OR=2.58, 95% CI: 1.30-5.10). Conclusion Both short and long SD were significantly positively associated with stroke in the total participants, and the associations were stronger in the Mets group; conversely, in the non-Mets group, only short SD was significantly positively associated with stroke, and no significant association was observed between long SD and stroke. Therefore, more precise sleep measures may be needed to prevent stroke according to the different status of Mets.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the quality of sleep, presence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and its relationship with the presence of snoring, cephalometric characteristics, degree of collapse of the upper airways, and orofacial myofunctional profile in obese and overweight individuals. METHODS All participants completed polysomnography, as well as sleep and snoring questionnaires. We further performed orofacial, otorhinolaryngological, and anthropometric evaluations on all participants. RESULTS A total of 102 adults, comprising 29 obese, 21 overweight, and 52 eutrophic individuals of both sexes participated in this study. We observed a high prevalence of snoring in both obese and overweight (100%), and in 65% of eutrophic individuals. Among the obese subjects 58% had a severe degree of OSA, whereas 4% of eutrophic subjects presented a risk for OSA development. Sleep quality was related to body mass index (BMI) and cervical and abdominal circumference. All obese and overweight individuals presented with orofacial myofunctional alterations such as facial asymmetry, alteration of the maxilla-jaw relationship, inadequate tongue posture, changes in masticatory pattern and swallowing, and inadequate general orofacial myofunctional condition. Airway obstructions at the retropalatal and retrolingual levels > 75% were observed in at least 48% of the individuals. CONCLUSION Obese and overweight individuals presented a higher risk for the development of OSA compared with eutrophic patients, and obese individuals presented a greater severity of OSA. The higher the BMI and greater the cervical and abdominal circumferences, the higher the prevalence of OSA, worse the quality of sleep, and more serious orofacial myofunctional characteristics in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A significant portion of individuals in the United States and worldwide experience diseases related to or driven by diet. As research surrounding user-centered design and the microbiome grows, movement of the spectrum of translational science from bench to bedside for improvement of human health through nutrition becomes more accessible. In this literature survey, we examined recent literature examining informatics research at the interface of nutrition and the microbiome. OBJECTIVES The objective of this survey was to synthesize recent literature describing how technology is being applied to understand health at the interface of nutrition and the microbiome focusing on the perspective of the consumer. METHODS A survey of the literature published between January 1, 2021 and October 10, 2022 was performed using the PubMed database and resulting literature was evaluated against inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS A total of 139 papers were retrieved and evaluated against inclusion and exclusion criteria. After evaluation, 45 papers were reviewed in depth revealing four major themes: (1) microbiome and diet, (2) usability,(3) reproducibility and rigor, and (4) precision medicine and precision nutrition. CONCLUSIONS A review of the relationships between current literature on technology, nutrition and the microbiome, and self-management of dietary patterns was performed. Major themes that emerged from this survey revealed exciting new horizons for consumer management of diet and disease, as well as progress towards elucidating the relationship between diet, the microbiome, and health outcomes. The survey revealed continuing interest in the study of diet-related disease and the microbiome and acknowledgement of needs for data re-use, sharing, and unbiased and rigorous measurement of the microbiome. The literature also showed trends toward enhancing the usability of digital interventions to support consumer health and home management, and consensus building around how precision medicine and precision nutrition may be applied in the future to improve human health outcomes and prevent diet-related disease.

Obesity is listed as one of the most important health issues. Complications of obesity, with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) listed among them, are common problems in clinical practice. Obesity is a well-recognized risk factor for OSA, but OSA itself may contribute to worsening obesity. Bariatric surgery is a treatment of choice for severely obese patients, especially with present complications, and remains the only causative treatment for patients with OSA. Though improvement in OSA control in patients after bariatric surgery is well-established knowledge, the complete resolution of OSA is achieved in less than half of them. The determination of subpopulations of patients in whom bariatric surgery would be especially advantageous is an important issue of OSA management. Increasing the potential of non-invasive strategies in obesity treatment requires studies that assess the efficacy and safety of combined methods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Excessive gestational weight gain (eGWG) is associated with adverse long-term maternal outcomes. Most lifestyle interventions that incorporate physical activity have been ineffective at reducing eGWG. The purpose of this study was to determine if sleep modified the relationships between physical activity change from the 2nd to 3rd trimester and the odds of excessive gestational weight gain (eGWG). METHODS This was a secondary data analysis of a prospective cohort study of pregnant birthing people with overweight or obesity (n = 105). We estimated physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy and sleep characteristics (i.e., sleep quality, daytime dysfunction, sleep efficiency, sleep duration) in the 2nd trimester of pregnancy with validated measures. We used regression models with sleep and PAEE change (increase/stable vs. decrease) interaction terms to examine the impact of sleep on PAEE change and eGWG. RESULTS Mean GWG was 37.02 ± 16.76 lbs. and 80% of participants experienced eGWG. Eighteen percent of participants increased their PAEE from the 2nd to the 3rd trimester. Increasing (vs. decreasing) PAEE was associated with lower log-odds of eGWG only among participants that slept at least 8 h/night (p = 0.06), had at least 85% sleep efficiency (p = 0.03), or reported less daytime dysfunction (p = 0.08). Sleep quality did not moderate the association between PAEE change and eGWG. CONCLUSIONS Weight management interventions in pregnancy should consider screening for and addressing poor sleep in the second trimester.

Abstract
Social restriction measures (SRM) implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic led to a reduction in time spent outdoors (TSO). The aim of this study was to describe TSO and evaluate its association with sleep outcomes, optimism, happiness and health-status before and during SRM. Two online surveys were conducted in 2017 (N = 1004) and 2020, during SRM (N = 1010), in samples representative of the age, sex and region of the Austrian population. Information on the duration of TSO, sleep, optimism, happiness and health-status was collected. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were used to study the association of TSO with chronic insomnia, short sleep, late chronotype, optimism, happiness and self-rated health-status. The mean TSO was 3.6 h (SD: 2.18) in 2017 and 2.6 h (SD: 1.87) during times of SRM. Men and participants who were older, married or in a partnership and lived in a rural area reported longer TSO. Participants who spent less time outdoors were more likely to report short sleep or a late chronotype in both surveys and, in 2020, also chronic insomnia. Less TSO was associated with lower happiness and optimism levels and poor health-status. Our findings suggest that TSO may be a protective factor for sleep, mood and health, particularly during stressful and uncertain times.

Abstract
Background Sleep duration is associated with BMI and waist circumference. However, less is known about whether sleep duration affects different measurements of obesity differently. Objective To investigate the association between sleep duration and different measures of obesity. Methods In this cross-sectional analysis 1309, Danish, older adults (55% men) completed at least 3 days of wearing a combined accelerometer and heart rate-monitor for assessing sleep duration (hours/night) within self-reported usual bedtime. Participants underwent anthropometry and ultrasonography to assess BMI, waist circumference, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, and fat percentage. Linear regression analyses examined the associations between sleep duration and obesity-related outcomes. Results Sleep duration was inversely associated with all obesity-related outcomes, except visceral-/subcutaneous-fat-ratio. After multivariate adjustment the magnitude of associations became stronger and statistically significant for all outcomes except visceral-/subcutaneous-fat-ratio, and subcutaneous fat in women. The associations with BMI and waist circumference demonstrated the strongest associations, when comparing standardized regression coefficients. Conclusions Shorter sleep duration were associated with higher obesity across all outcomes except visceral-/subcutaneous-fat-ratio. No specifically salient associations with local or central obesity were observed. Results suggest that poor sleep duration and obesity correlate, however, further research is needed to conclude on beneficial effects of sleep duration regarding health and weight loss.

Abstract
Gut microbiota comprises the microbial communities inhabiting our gastrointestinal (GI) tracts. Accordingly, these complex communities play a fundamental role in many host processes and are closely implicated in human health and diseases. Sleep deprivation (SD) has become increasingly common in modern society, partly owing to the rising pressure of work and the diversification of entertainment. It is well documented that sleep loss is a significant cause of various adverse outcomes on human health including immune-related and metabolic diseases. Furthermore, accumulating evidence suggests that gut microbiota dysbiosis is associated with these SD-induced human diseases. In this review, we summarize the gut microbiota dysbiosis caused by SD and the succedent diseases ranging from the immune system and metabolic system to various organs and highlight the critical roles of gut microbiota in these diseases. The implications and possible strategies to alleviate SD-related human diseases are also provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social isolation during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic affected people's body weight, therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the association between lifestyle elements and the change in BMI during lockdown. METHODS This retrospective observational study involved 290 questionnaires completed by adult participants divided into three groups according to BMI change during isolation. The structured questionnaire included a general description of the study objective and collected data regarding sociodemographics, anthropometrics, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, sleep duration, and food intake pre- and during COVID-19 lockdown. RESULTS A decrease or increase in BMI was found in 23.6% and 47.8% of women and 18.5% and 42.6% of men, respectively. Among those who lost weight, 46.5% of women and 40% of men followed a diet of their own choice, 30.2% of women and 25% of men changed their product mix and reduced their intake, 40% of men stopped eating outside the home. An increase in BMI was associated with increased food intake (32.2% of women and 28.3% of men), increased sleep duration on weekdays (49.2% of women and 43.5% of men) and, in more than 50% of subjects, decreased physical activity. In women, increased BMI was associated with the highest frequency of snacking (p = 0.0003), the highest intake of sweets (p = 0.0021), and in men with the highest intake of alcohol (p = 0.0017). CONCLUSIONS The observed changes in BMI during social isolation were the result of lifestyle modifications including dietary behaviour and differed by gender.

Abstract
Obesity is a chronic disease and a major public health problem due to its association with non-communicable diseases and all-cause mortality. An increased energy intake and decreased physical activity have been long recognized as the classical parameters that contribute to the development of obesity. However, several other, non-classical factors have also been associated with obesity through various complex mechanisms. Some of them are diet related, such as diet quality, dietary habits and speed of eating. Other factors are non-dietary, such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, sleep quality and quantity, psychotropic medications and light at night. The scope of the present narrative review is to address these non-classical factors that are implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity, to clarify their potential role in the management of obesity and, where possible, to provide some practical clinical recommendations.
