The American Diabetes Association (ADA) "Standards of Care in Diabetes" includes the ADA's current clinical practice recommendations and is intended to provide the components of diabetes care, general treatment goals and guidelines, and tools to evaluate quality of care. Members of the ADA Professional Practice Committee, an interprofessional expert committee, are responsible for updating the Standards of Care annually, or more frequently as warranted. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study explored differences in illness representations of VALI guided by the Common-Sense Model of Self-Regulation (CSM-SR) among non-patient adults. DESIGN We employed a cross-sectional concurrent mixed-methods design. In the quantitative analysis, we used multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). Immersion/crystallization was used to analyze qualitative data. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES We measured differences in illness representations of VALI by e-cigarette use status, gender, and urban/rural residence. RESULTS E-cigarette use was associated with illness representations of VALI. Current e-cigarette users discounted the detrimental nature of VALI, compared to former and never e-cigarette users. Gender and urban/rural residence moderated the association between e-cigarette use and illness representation of VALI. In the qualitative analysis, 49.3% respondents reported components of the timeline (e.g. permanent), identity (e.g. shortness of breath), causes (e.g. THC products), consequences (e.g. life-threatening), cure/control (e.g. stop vaping), and worry (e.g. fearful). CONCLUSION Perceptions about VALI, such as cure and timeline, were associated with e-cigarettes use. Understanding the context in which adults perceive VALI, such as gender and rurality, may contribute to developing interventions that influence e-cigarette cessation. Future research employing CSM-SR to target strategies for promoting vaping abstinence is warranted.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To date only a limited number of reviews have focused on how exposure and outcome measures are defined in the existing literature on associations between tobacco retailer density ('density') and smoking behaviour ('smoking'). Therefore this systematic review classified and summarised how both density and smoking variables are operationalised in the existing literature, and provides several methodological recommendations for future density and smoking research. METHODS Two literature searches between March and April 2018 and April 2022 were conducted across 10 databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were developed and keyword database searches were undertaken. Studies were imported into Covidence. Cross-sectional studies that met the inclusion criteria were extracted and a quality assessment was undertaken. Studies were categorised according to the density measure used, and smoking was re-categorised using a modified classification tool. RESULTS Large heterogeneity was found in the operationalisation of both measures in the 47 studies included for analysis. Density was most commonly measured directly from geocoded locations using circular buffers at various distances (n = 14). After smoking was reclassified using a smoking classification tool, past-month smoking was the most common smoking type reported (n = 26). CONCLUSIONS It is recommended that density is measured through length-distance and travel time using the street network and weighted (e.g. by the size of an area), or by using Kernel Density Estimates as these methods provide a more accurate measure of geographical to tobacco and e-cigarette retailer density. The consistent application of a smoking measures classification tool, such as the one developed for this systematic review, would enable better comparisons between studies. Future research should measure exposure and outcome measures in a way that makes them comparable with other studies. IMPLICATIONS This systematic review provides a strong case for improving data collection and analysis methodologies in studies assessing tobacco retailer density and smoking behaviour to ensure that both exposure and outcome measures are clearly defined and captured. As large heterogeneity was found in the operationalisation of both density and smoking behaviour measures in the studies included for analysis, there is a need for future studies to capture, measure and classify exposure measures accurately, and to define outcome measures in a manner that makes them comparable with other studies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have become one of the most common forms of nicotine delivery used by youth and young adults worldwide. Given the lack of epidemiologic data in Kuwait, this study sought to estimate the prevalence of e-cigarette use, assess perceptions of harm and addictiveness of e-cigarettes, measure the level of dependence on e-cigarettes and assess factors associated with dependence level among adults. METHODS A cross-sectional study enrolled adults (n=3032, aged ≥18 years) living in Kuwait using a web-based questionnaire. Participants self-reported ever and current (past 30-day) e-cigarette use and self-completed the 10-item Penn State E-cigarette Dependence Index. Associations were evaluated using multinomial logistic regression. RESULTS The prevalence of ever and current e-cigarette use was estimated to be 40.2% (1220/3032) and 29.4% (892/3032), respectively. The prevalence of current e-cigarette use was higher in males compared to females (47.6% vs 14.4%, p<0.001). Relative to cigarette smoking, 40.6% of participants reported that e-cigarettes are less harmful, and 41.8% indicated that e-cigarettes are equally addictive. Among current e-cigarette users (n=892), 84.8% were ascertained to have developed either low, medium, or high dependence. The use of pod-based devices compared to disposable devices was associated with a high dependence level (adjusted odds ratio, AOR=8.56; 95% CI: 4.52-16.22). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that a large proportion of adults in Kuwait use e-cigarettes, and a considerable proportion of current users have developed dependence. Therefore, such results should alert public health authorities and warrant the development of evidence-based awareness campaigns, policies, and prevention measures to protect and improve the health of people.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given its pathophysiology and evidence on its long-term effects, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may have altered the incidence, types, and severity of other respiratory infections (RIs). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the potential impact of COVID-19 on non-SARS-CoV-2 RIs in COVID-19 survivors. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered, online survey from February 2022 to April 2022 in the United Arab Emirates. Participants included adults diagnosed with COVID-19 before February 2021. Those who did not undergo nasopharyngeal swab tests for contraction of other RIs after recovering from COVID-19 were excluded. RESULTS Of the 384 participants, 24.5% were aged 18-24 years, and 55.5% were women. The mean body mass index (BMI) was 29.6 ± 3.7 kg/m2. Among the participants, 34.4% experienced at least one non-SARS-CoV-2 RI after recovering from COVID-19, of which 25.8% reported that the RI lasted longer than those previously, 27.3% sought physician advice, 31.8% reported increased coughing as a symptom of the non-SARS-CoV-2 RI, and 38.6% reported increased sputum. Based on patient responses, the degree of COVID-19 severity was significantly associated with non-SARS-CoV-2 RIs (p = 0.003), and depression was found to be a significant predictor of changes in shortness of breath symptoms (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.29; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.17-1.46). CONCLUSIONS The participants of this study reported changes in the duration and severity of non-SARS-CoV-2 RIs after recovering from COVID-19. Further research is needed to confirm these findings, which suggest a need for swift action to protect the public against RIs, particularly seasonal pathogens.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study attempted to identify risk profiles of marijuana vaping by state-level recreational marijuana legalization (RML) status among U.S. young adults (YA). METHODS Data were drawn from the most recent two waves of restricted use files of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study with state identifiers. We analyzed 6155 young adult (18-24 years) respondents who were naïve to marijuana vaping at Wave 4 and had matched data at Wave 5. We employed a two-stage machine learning approach to predict marijuana vaping initiation at Wave 5 with predictors measured at Wave 4. RESULTS Among YA who had never vaped marijuana at Wave 4, 19% of those who lived in the states with RML and 15% of those who lived in the states without RML reported marijuana vaping at Wave 5. Substance-use-related predictors were rarely found as leading predictors in the states with RML. In the states without RML, substance use behaviors, including electronic nicotine delivery systems and smokeless tobacco use, and the presence of externalizing symptoms emerged as predictors for marijuana vaping. Results also revealed that nonlinear interactions between the predictors of marijuana vaping. CONCLUSIONS Our results highlight the importance of accounting for the RML status in developing risk profiles of marijuana vaping. Externalizing symptoms may be a behavioral endophenotype of marijuana vaping in the states without RML. Machine learning appears to be a promising analytical approach to identify complex interactions between factors in predicting an emerging risk behavior such as marijuana vaping.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a lack of consensus in the literature about the association between the perceived health risks of e-cigarettes and their actual use, an association that may be based on cigarette smoking status or sexual and gender minority status. This study examined the moderating effect of these variables as well as differences in e-cigarette use between and within perceived harmfulness of e-cigarettes and cigarette smoking among U.S. adults. METHODS The data were drawn from the 2020 and 2019 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS 5), Cycles 4 and 3, on adults (N = 9303). We estimated weighted multivariable logistic regression models and conducted marginal analyses based on perceived harmfulness of e-cigarettes. RESULTS Of the study population, 30.75% currently used e-cigarettes daily or some days. No significant difference in e-cigarette use was found between sexual minorities and heterosexuals, but there was a significant interaction between sexual identity and perceived harmfulness of e-cigarettes. Compared to non-smokers, current daily or some days cigarette smokers were more likely to use e-cigarettes (AOR = 3.48, 95% CI = 1.25, 9.72). Those who perceived e-cigarettes to be just as harmful as actual cigarettes (AOR = 0.13, 95% CI = 0.06, 0.27) or more harmful (AOR = 0.03, 95% CI = 0.01, 0.10), or were uncertain (AOR = 0.18, 95% CI = 0.08, 0.45), were less likely to use e-cigarettes compared to those who perceived e-cigarettes to be less harmful. Former and current cigarette smokers who perceived e-cigarettes as less harmful had a higher probability of using e-cigarettes daily or some days than did non-cigarette smokers. For the current and former cigarette smoking groups, those who perceived e-cigarettes as less harmful had the highest probability of current e-cigarette use than did those who were uncertain or perceived e-cigarettes as just as harmful, whereas the probability was not significant for those who perceived e-cigarettes as more harmful. CONCLUSION Current daily or some days use of e-cigarettes is associated with current daily or some days cigarette smoking and lowered perceived harmfulness of e-cigarettes among the U.S. adult population. Tailored health promotion and intervention efforts may reduce the potential perceived health and behavioral/lifestyle risks related to the use of tobacco products, especially the use of e-cigarettes daily among former and current cigarette smokers as well as those who perceive e-cigarettes as less harmful.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco use is the single largest preventable risk factor for premature death of non-communicable diseases and the second leading cause of cardiovascular disease. In response to the harmful effects of tobacco smoking, the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has emerged and gained significant popularity over the past 15 years. E-cigarettes are promoted as safe alternatives for traditional tobacco smoking and are often suggested as a way to reduce or quit smoking. However, evidence suggests they are not harmless. DISCUSSION The rapid evolution of the e-cigarette market has outpaced the legislator's regulatory capacity, leading to mixed regulations. The increasing use of e-cigarettes in adolescents and young individuals is of concern. While the long-term direct cardiovascular effects of e-cigarettes remain largely unknown, the existing evidence suggests that the e-cigarette should not be regarded as a cardiovascular safe product. The contribution of e-cigarette use to reducing conventional cigarette use and smoking cessation is complex, and the impact of e-cigarette use on long-term cessation lacks sufficient evidence. CONCLUSION This position paper describes the evidence regarding the prevalence of e-cigarette smoking, uptake of e-cigarettes in the young, related legislations, cardiovascular effects of e-cigarettes and the impact of e-cigarettes on smoking cessation. Knowledge gaps in the field are also highlighted. The recommendations from the population science and public health section of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology are presented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The E-cigarette, or Vaping Product-Use Associated Lung Injury (EVALI) Outbreak of 2019 hospitalised thousands and killed dozens of people in the USA and raised perceptions of the dangers posed to health by electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). These illnesses along with continued increases in youth vaping rates lead to the passage of many state and federal laws intended to curtail the sale of flavoured e-cigarettes. Little is known about the impact of these events on US e-cigarette and cigarette retail sales. METHODS Using Nielsen Scantrack sales data from January 2014 to January 2020 for 23 US states, we evaluate the effect of the EVALI outbreak. First-differenced state-panel regressions tracking unit sales of total-level and category-level e-cigarettes and cigarette sales controlling for price, Tobacco 21 policy coverage, product distribution, seasonality, EVALI-attributable deaths, and state-level e-cigarette policies affecting the availability of e-cigarettes (non-tobacco flavoured and total) were employed. RESULTS Dollar sales of e-cigarettes declined 29% from their pre-EVALI peak by January 2020. Total sales of e-cigarettes declined in response to EVALI deaths and the total e-cigarette sales ban put in place in Massachusetts adopted in its wake. Cigarette sales were largely unchanged by either the direct or indirect policy effects of the EVALI outbreak, except for in Massachusetts, where cigarette sales-particularly those smoked by young people-rose temporarily after a total ban on e-cigarette sales. CONCLUSION Sales of e-cigarettes declined in response to the EVALI outbreak and from the most restrictive regulatory policies that were adopted in response, while sales of cigarettes were affected less.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a dearth of literature on sexual and gender minority (SGM) only data that examines the association between tobacco use, co-occurring substance use, and psychological distress. METHODS Using SGM-only primary data collected between March 2016 and January 2017, participants were categorized based on recent tobacco use and prevalence estimates were calculated for exclusive e-cigarette use and use of other tobacco products. The strength of the association between tobacco use, recent hazardous alcohol use, illicit substance use, and having a diagnosis for depression, anxiety, or PTSD was estimated. Bivariate and adjusted multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to obtain estimates. RESULTS A third of participants (32.91%) reported recent tobacco use. Of these, 8.79% were exclusive e-cigarette users and 24.12% used other tobacco products. Compared to non-tobacco users, e-cigarette users were more likely to have recently used illicit drugs (RRR= 3.00 [1.89, 4.77]) and participated in a substance use treatment program (RRR= 7.98 [1.76, 36.15]). Participants categorized as using other tobacco products, when compared to non-tobacco users, were more likely to have recently used illicit drugs (RRR= 2.05 [1.46, 2.86]), engaged in hazardous drinking (RRR= 2.27 [1.63, 3.16]), and participated in a substance use treatment program (RRR= 9.53 [3.14, 28,88]). They were also more likely to have been recently diagnosed with PTSD (RRR= 3.40 [1.82, 6.34]). CONCLUSIONS SGM tobacco users are more likely to engage in hazardous drinking and illicit substance use and access substance use treatment services. There is an opportunity to reduce tobacco use among SGM individuals by developing, implementing, and evaluating tailored tobacco cessation interventions within substance use treatment facilities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health messages on e-cigarette packs emphasise nicotine addiction or harms using similar wording to warnings on cigarette packs. These may not be appropriate for e-cigarettes which constitute a reduced risk alternative for smokers. This research aimed to (1) develop and test a selection of relative risk messages for e-cigarette products; (2) compare these to the two current EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) nicotine addiction messages; and (3) explore differences between smokers, non-smokers and dual users. METHOD Twenty-six messages focusing on either harm-reduction or cessation were developed and rated by multidisciplinary experts for accuracy, persuasiveness and clarity. The eight highest ranking messages were compared alongside the TPD messages in a sample of 983 European residents (316 smokers, 327 non-smokers, 340 dual users) on understandability, believability and convincingness. RESULTS On all three constructs combined, the two TPD messages rated the highest, closely followed by four relative risk messages "Completely switching to e-cigarettes lowers your risk of smoking related diseases", "Use of this product is much less harmful than smoking", "Completely switching to e-cigarettes is a healthier alternative to smoking", and "This product presents substantially lower risks to health than cigarettes" which did not differ statistically from the TPD messages. Non-smokers rated TPD1 significantly higher overall than dual users. Dual users rated "This product is a safer alternative to smoking" significantly higher than non-smokers. Messages did not differ on understandability. CONCLUSIONS These alternative messages provide a useful resource for future research and for policy makers considering updating e-cigarette product labelling.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) harm perceptions and information seeking behaviours are both important antecedents of e-cigarette use, yet the relationship between them has been rarely studied. We assessed how absolute (e-cigarettes are harmful to my health) and relative harm perceptions (e-cigarettes are more/less harmful than cigarettes) were associated with specific e-cigarette information seeking behaviours in a sample of current, former and never cigarette smokers. METHODS We used data from US adults in two cycles of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS-FDA 2015, n = 3738; 2017, n = 1736). Analyses controlled for socio-demographics, ever e-cigarette use and survey cycle. Data were analysed between January and August 2020. RESULTS Higher relative harm perceptions were associated with lower odds of having sought any information on e-cigarettes [adjusted odds ratio 0.61, 95% confidence interval (0.48, 0.84)] and on how to use e-cigarettes to quit smoking specifically [adjusted odds ratio 0.59, 95% confidence interval (0.38, 0.91)]. Smoking status did not moderate associations between absolute or relative harm perceptions and information seeking behaviours, nor was it associated with specific information seeking behaviours after adjusting for covariates. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS The risks of e-cigarettes relative to combusted cigarettes (as opposed to the absolute risks of e-cigarettes) appear to be more important in individuals' information seeking behaviours about e-cigarettes. Public health messages could ensure that all individuals understand how one's health risk would change if they exclusively used e-cigarettes, switched to e-cigarettes completely or used both products.

Abstract
Little is known about e-cigarette use among persons in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, or their use of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation. Prevalence of e-cigarette use and correlates of e-cigarette use for smoking cessation were examined among clients in SUD treatment. Participants (n = 332) were current cigarette smokers recruited from 20 residential SUD programs in California. We used multivariable logistic regression to identify correlates of using e-cigarettes for quitting smoking. Almost half (45.2%) of the sample had ever used e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, and 34% had used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days. Smokers who had used e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, compared to those who had not, were younger (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 0.94, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.91, 0.96), had more than a high school education (AOR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.07, 2.68), sought treatment for both SUD and mental health disorder (AOR = 2.62, 95% CI = 1.38, 5.00), wanted help quitting smoking (AOR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.03, 3.50) and perceived e-cigarettes as equally harmful (AOR = 3.03, 95% CI = 1.10, 8.33) or less harmful than tobacco cigarettes (AOR = 2.82, 95% CI = 1.02, 7.77). Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino participants were less likely to use e-cigarettes for smoking cessation than participants who identify as White. E-cigarettes were favorably perceived by clients in residential SUD treatment as a quit smoking aid. Treatment programs should consider how to advise clients with respect to the use of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation.

Abstract
Although pregnant smokers may perceive electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) as safe alternatives to smoking combustible cigarettes, few studies have evaluated perinatal e-cigarette use and its associated health effects. We analyzed data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS, 2016-2018) for 16,022 women who recently gave birth and reported smoking combustible cigarettes prior to pregnancy. Using average marginal predictive values from multivariable logistic regression to produce adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs), we estimated the prevalence of combustible cigarette smoking during pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes associated with e-cigarette use. In total, 14.8% of smoking women reported using e-cigarettes prior to pregnancy. There was no association between e-cigarette use prior to pregnancy and combustible cigarette smoking during pregnancy (aPR 0.95; 95% CI 0.88, 1.02); however, e-cigarette use during pregnancy was associated with higher prevalence of combustible cigarette smoking during pregnancy (aPR 1.65; 95% CI 1.52, 1.80). In this sample, we did not observe evidence to support reduced risk of preterm birth, small-for-gestational age and low birthweight compared to combustible cigarette smoking during pregnancy. The prevalence of LBW was higher for those who used e-cigarettes, even exclusively, compared to women who quit smoking cigarettes entirely. These results suggest that e-cigarettes should not be considered a safe alternative to combustible cigarette smoking during pregnancy.

Abstract
Electronic-cigarette's (ECIGs) popularity has grown over the last decade and changed the way individuals administer nicotine. Preclinical research is imperative for understanding the addictive properties and health-risks associated with ECIG use; however, there is not a standard dosing regimen used across research laboratories. The main objective was to determine how vapor puff durations, administration session length, and flavored e-liquid alter general and mood-disorder related behaviors while providing a foundation of vapor administration parameters. Adult male and female C57BL/6 mice were exposed to several nicotine-free unflavored vapor puff durations (1, 3, 6, or 10 s) and vapor administration session lengths (10 and 30 min) then measured on the following assays: locomotor activity (LMA), tail suspension test (TST), and light-dark test. The effects of mecamylamine and the time-course of vapor-induced depression of LMA also were assessed. Additionally, mice were exposed to flavored (strawberry and adventurers tobacco blend) vapor inhalation and measured on locomotor activity, tail suspension test, and light-dark test. Following both 10 and 30 min vapor administration session, there was a puff duration-dependent decrease in distance traveled, time in center, and rearing. The vapor-induced depression of LMA was not mediated by nicotine or nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) activation and lasted 60-90 min. The 10 s puff duration produced an anxiogenic-like effect in the light-dark test by decreasing the time spent in the light side. Vapor inhalation did not significantly alter TST behavior. No significant effects of sex or flavor were found. The anxiogenic-like effects of nicotine-free vapor inhalation are concerning as many adolescents vape nicotine-free flavored e-liquid, and there is an association between ECIGs and mood disorders. Additionally, these studies demonstrate that vapor puff duration, but not vapor administration session length, is an important variable to consider during research design as it can become a confounding variable and alter baseline behaviors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Evidence is still scarce regarding the use of e-cigarettes by young people for weight-control reasons. This study aimed to test a model in which the prospective association between negative body esteem and e-cigarette use is mediated by weight-control outcome expectancies for e-cigarette use. The model was tested across genders. METHODS Data were collected at three time points, 6 months apart, from 2327 young adults (mean age = 21.2; SD = 2.2; 54% women). Self-reported data were collected on demographics, body mass index, body esteem, weight-control outcome expectancies for e-cigarette use, and current e-cigarette use and cigarette smoking. RESULTS Among women, we found a significant indirect effect of lower body esteem on higher likelihood of current e-cigarette use 1 year later, mediated by higher weight-control outcome expectancies at 6-month follow-up, adjusting for demographics, body mass index, and baseline e-cigarette use and cigarette smoking. Among men, body esteem was not found to have significant effect on either weight-control expectancies or e-cigarette use. CONCLUSIONS Based on the current findings, young adult women who have higher negative body esteem are at increased risk for using e-cigarettes for weight-control motives. IMPLICATIONS The current findings are some of the first to show prospective associations among weight-control motives and e-cigarette use among young adults. These findings suggest that a group of vulnerable young women may be using e-cigarettes to lose or control weight. More research is needed to understand their choice of flavors, nicotine concentration, and device type. In addition, research is needed to understand whether e-cigarettes are being marketed, directly or indirectly, as being useful for weight loss or control. There may be a need for health promotion strategies that provide healthier alternatives to young women struggling with low body esteem who use e-cigarettes for weight loss or control.

Abstract
The explosive rise in popularity of electronic cigarette (e-cig) devices over the past decade has led to controversies over the role of these devices in smoking cessation and harm reduction from combustible cigarette smoking. Increased recognition of potential direct harms of e-cigs, including life-threatening and fatal cases of e-cig and vaping product use-associated lung injury, has emphasized the need to curb use until safety can be established. Of particular concern is the steep rise in e-cig use among teenagers and young adults who have never smoked and among individuals with underlying lung disease, such as asthma. In this report, we describe the different types of e-cig devices available, summarize the available data on the potential health benefits and detriments of e-cig use, and highlight the findings of studies examining e-cigs as smoking cessation tools. Because e-cigs have only gained popularity in the last few years, very few studies have been able to demonstrate an impact of e-cig use on harm reduction related to combustible cigarettes. Moreover, the health effects of e-cigs at a population level must be balanced against the harms of e-cig use, which include nicotine dependence and promoting initiation of cigarette use amongst "never smokers." With respect to smoking cessation, e-cigs appear to serve as switching products that may help individuals reduce or quit cigarette use, but do not address nicotine addiction. Finally, we discuss our recommendations for ways that health care providers can screen and counsel patients on e-cig use. The goal of this report is to provide health care providers with the most recent information on this topic so that they can educate patients on the potential pros and cons of e-cig use.

Introduction
Individuals with substance use disorders and/or mental health (MH) conditions have higher rates of cigarette smoking than the general population. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) while gaining popularity pose health risks. Herein we investigate risk perceptions and attitudes toward e-cigarettes in military Veterans with MH conditions.
Materials and Methods
Participants included U.S. Veterans receiving services from Veterans Administration MH/substance use disorder clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area (N = 98; 95% male, 44% White, 34% Black/African American), who completed a survey on smoking and health. Results compare attitudes and perceptions regarding e-cigarette use between ever and never e-cigarette users. The study was reviewed by the Institutional Review Board at both the Veterans Administration and University.
Results
Most respondents reported being current/past cigarette smokers (91%) and over a third reported having ever used an e-cigarette (38%). Most believed that e-cigarettes are not safe, are potentially dangerous, are potentially addictive if they use every day and are tempting and appealing to youth. Fifty-one percent of ever-users agreed with a statement that e-cigarettes can help people quit smoking regular cigarettes completely, and there was a significant difference in this belief when comparing them with never-users (23% agreed); χ2 = 9.259, P = 0.010.
Conclusions
Proportion of e-cigarette use in this Veteran sample is greater than the general population. We observed high risk perception about e-cigarettes among all respondents and differences in perceived helpfulness of e-cigarettes for quitting in ever-users versus never-users in this sample. More consistent assessment of tobacco use among Veterans, with inclusion of ENDS use, would help inform prevention and treatment priorities, especially as information on health impacts of ENDS surfaces.

Abstract
While various modalities of chronic nicotine use have been associated with numerous negative consequences to human health, one possible benefit of nicotine exposure has been uncovered. The discovery of an inverse correlation between smoking and Parkinson's disease, and later Alzheimer's disease as well, motivated investigation of nicotine as a neuroprotective agent. Some studies have demonstrated that nicotine elicits improvements in cognitive function. The hippocampus, along with the subventricular zone (SVZ), is a distinct brain region that allow for ongoing postnatal neurogenesis throughout adulthood and plays a major role in certain cognitive behaviors like learning and memory. Therefore, one hypothesis underlying nicotine-induced neuroprotection is possible effects on neural stem cells and neural precursor cells. On the other hand, nicotine withdrawal frequently leads to cognitive impairments, particularly in hippocampal-dependent behaviors, possibly suggesting an impairment of hippocampal neurogenesis with nicotine exposure. This review discusses the current body of evidence on nicotine's effects on neural stem cells and neural progenitors. Changes in neural stem cell proliferation, survival, intracellular dynamics, and differentiation following acute and chronic nicotine exposure are examined.

Abstract
Objectives In this study, we examined whether visual exposure to the heated tobacco product (HTP) IQOS, which was authorized for sale by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2019, acts as a cue to increase cigarette craving and smoking behavior among smokers. Methods Young adult smokers (N = 105) were randomly assigned to view a video depicting use of either IQOS or bottled water. Main outcomes were changes in cigarette and e-cigarette desire and latency to smoke between the groups. We also examined participants' attitudes about the actors using IQOS and drinking water in the videos. Results Exposure to the use of IQOS acutely increased observers' ratings of smoking urge and desire for a cigarette and an e-cigarette. The IQOS cue, compared with the water cue, also produced a marginally significant shorter latency to smoke. Participants perceived actors as less likeable and friendly when using IQOS than when drinking water. Conclusions Results showed that exposure to IQOS produced smoking urge and behavior in young adult smokers, implicating IQOS use as a smoking and vaping cue. As HTPs gain popularity, product impact on passive observers should be included in their risk-benefit profile.

Abstract
The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has been rising among adolescents and adults in the United States, including among Asian Americans. However, despite being one of the largest racial/ethnic minority groups, the specific trends and patterns of e-cigarette use among Asian Americans are understudied and unclear. This review aimed to summarize relevant information in the last two decades. This systematic review followed the a priori guide outlined by the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) statement. Articles were gathered from PsycINFO, PubMed, Sage Journals Online, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink. Forty articles were reviewed and analyzed. Most articles reviewed only reported on the prevalence rate of e-cigarettes among Asian Americans and indicated regional differences. Results noted between- and within-group differences among racial/ethnic groups that warrant further examination. There is a dearth of information regarding health outcomes and correlates or predictors of e-cigarette use among Asian Americans. Despite its popularity and prevalence among Asian Americans, the use of e-cigarettes and related factors or outcomes deserves more nuanced studies and analyses. It is important to delineate subgroup differences by adjusting study designs and data analytic methods to glean meaningful information regarding Asian American's e-cigarette use in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES While health risks associated with tobacco cigarette use are well-known, additional risks of dual use are poorly understood. This study compared mental and behavioral health risk factors associated with the current dual use of e-cigarettes and conventional tobacco cigarettes with current exclusive users of tobacco cigarettes and nonusers of either e-cigarettes or tobacco cigarettes. METHODS Data from the 2016 National Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) were analyzed (N = 277,034). Current dual use was defined as the current use of tobacco cigarettes and the use of e-cigarettes, everyday or some days. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess associations between dual use and mental and behavioral health risks compared with exclusive tobacco cigarette users and nonusers. RESULTS Compared with nonusers, current dual use was associated with increased odds of having more than 14 days of self-reported poor physical health (adjusted odd ratio [AOR], 1.9; P < .01), more than 14 days of self-reported poor mental health (AOR, 1.8; P < .01), a diagnosis of depression (AOR, 2.2; P < .001); using smokeless tobacco products (AOR, 1.6; P < .05), alcohol use (AOR, 1.6; P < .01), and marijuana use (AOR, 8.3; P < .001) than current exclusive users of tobacco cigarettes. CONCLUSIONS AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE The concurrent use of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes is associated with increased odds of having behavioral and mental health problems. These findings may be indicative of increased health risks associated with dual use, compared with the exclusive use of tobacco cigarettes, and have important implications for public health interventions and policies aimed at mitigating health risk behaviors. Abstract
Electronic nicotine delivery systems were promoted publically as a healthier replacement for conventional cigarettes. Knowledge and beliefs of the public can drive their behaviours to adapt or reject the new habit. No previous research was conducted in Jordan to assess electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) prevalence, and limited data are available on public opinions and orientation toward this new habit. To assess prevalence of, knowledge, attitude and beliefs about e-cigarettes, and examine factors associated with plans of quitting or initiating e-cigarettes among adults in Jordan. A large cross-sectional face-to-face survey on a random sample of adult population aged ≥ 18 years was conducted over two months to include 1820 adults in Jordan. A representative sample was collected using proportionate random sampling technique, which enabled us to geographically categorise the study population. Reliability and validity measures were taken to ensure a comprehensive and appropriate study tool. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS®) version 24 was used to conduct descriptive analysis, logistic regression, and Rao-Scott chi-square. Findings were considered statistically significant at p value < 0.05 (with a confidence limit at 95%). Of 2164 adults approached, 1820 completed the questionnaire (84.1% response rate). The prevalence of current e-cigarette smokers and dual smokers were 11.7% and 4.0%, respectively. Quitting conventional smoking (38.8%) and enjoying the flavour (32.5%) were the most common reasons to start vaping. Friends were the major source of information about e-cigarettes. There was evidence that adults aged 45-59 years were less likely to be dual smokers (OR 0.51; 95%CI 0.29-0.66; p = 0.03). Poor knowledge about the content (23.7%) and types of e-cigarettes (14.5%) was reported. Plans to reduce or quit e-cigarettes were significantly associated with three factors: smokers' knowledge about its content, social impression, smokers' satisfaction with e-cigarettes. Social impression was also associated with plans of initiating e-cigarettes. Most participants thought vaping cannot be harmful to children and pregnant women (73.1%) and cannot be addictive (58.2%). Electronic cigarettes were considered helpful in smoking cessation by 69.1% of participants. The proportions of adults who were currently electronic cigarette and dual smokers were 11.7% and 4.0%, respectively. Our research may provide insight to product and individual factors that were associated with plans to sustain, quit or initiate electronic smoking.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the highly publicized health consequences, some college students do not perceive tobacco consumption as harmful. Historically-Black College and Universities (HBCUs) have the lowest rates of tobacco-free policies compared to other colleges, universities, and minority-serving institutions, making their students at higher risk for tobacco abuse. A campus Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Prevention Committee (ATDP) was formed and led by a pharmacist to develop all tobacco cessation policies at the HBCU. OBJECTIVES (1) To determine the knowledge and attitudes of cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and hookah among college students in a rural area with high tobacco usage; (2) To assess perceptions on the effectiveness of smoking cessation resources on the college campus led by the ATDP committee. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on 99 students between 18 - 26 years attending a HBCU in Maryland. The online survey was disseminated to assess student's health behaviors and attitudes towards tobacco products and their successfulness in abstinence using campus resources with the Health Belief Model. RESULTS Participants had more perceived harms with smoking tobacco (cigarettes and cigars) and smokeless tobacco, and greater perceived benefits with using electronic cigarettes and hookah (P < 0.001). Most students had limited knowledge of the four tobacco categories (5.8 ± 2.6 on a 10-point Likert scale). Self-efficacy to quit was 4.2 ± 1.7 on a 10-point Likert scale despite the current resources at the HBCU. CONCLUSION Students had a perceived benefits sequential rank order with hookah, e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, followed by smoking tobacco. Campuses should investigate barriers for abstinence, raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco, and create programs that enhance self-efficacy when quitting. INNOVATION AND PRACTICE IMPLICATION This is the first study of its kind that compares all major tobacco products head-to-head in a rural and underrepresented population. Additionally, the development of a campus-wide tobacco policy was novel as it was pharmacist-led. The results show this population has limited knowledge of tobacco products with more perceived benefits among newer nicotine delivery systems. Targeted education and public health programs should be implemented to prevent this susceptible group from initiating and continuing tobacco products.

Abstract
AIMS The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between impulsivity-related personality traits based on the UPPS-P model and e-cigarette use. The study used a sample of mainly European adults and compared e-cigarette users with non-smokers, cigarette smokers and dual users (those who currently smoke cigarettes and use e-cigarettes). Additionally, the relationship between impulsivity-related traits and frequency and intensity of e-cigarette use was examined, while the main reasons for e-cigarette use were also assessed. METHODS Participants were 720 adults (234 non-smokers, 164 smokers, 150 e-cigarette users, 172 dual users), who completed online questionnaires regarding sociodemographics, smoking/e-cigarette use behaviour, and impulsivity (UPPS-P scale). RESULTS Impulsivity-related traits did not significantly differentiate e-cigarette users from non-smokers. E-cigarette users showed lower levels of lack of perseverance than cigarette smokers, and they exhibited lower levels of negative and positive urgency than dual users. Negative urgency also significantly differentiated smokers and non-smokers, with smokers having higher levels of the trait. No significant results were found examining the relationship between the impulsivity-related traits and e-cigarette behaviour (number of days vaping per month, number of times vaping per day, and millilitres of e-liquid used per day). The main reason given for e-cigarette use was the perception that it is less harmful than cigarettes. CONCLUSION The present study found that trait impulsivity differentiated e-cigarette users from cigarette smokers and dual users, but did not differentiate e-cigarette users from non-smokers. Such findings are important to not only help us identify factors associated with e-cigarette use, but also to potentially inform treatment plans and decisions.

Abstract
The Tobacco Regulatory Science Program is a collaborative research effort between the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In 2013, the NIH funded 14 Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS), which serve as partners in establishing research, training, and professional development programs to guide FDA. Each of the fourteen TCORS, and two other NIH-funded research programs, the Center for the Evaluation of Nicotine in Cigarettes (CENIC) and the Consortium on Methods Evaluating Tobacco (COMET), pursued specific research themes relevant to FDA's priorities. A key mandate for FDA is to reduce tobacco use among young people. This article is a review of the peer-reviewed research, including published and in-press manuscripts, from the TCORS, CENIC, and COMET, which provides specific data or other findings on youth (ages 10-18 years) and/or young adults (ages 18-34 years), from 2013 to 2018. Citations of all TCORS, CENIC, and COMET articles from September 2013 to December 2017 were collected by the TCORS coordinating center, the Center for Evaluation and Coordination of Training and Research. Additional citations up to April 30, 2018 were requested from the principal investigators. A scoring rubric was developed and implemented to assess study type, primary theme, and FDA priority area addressed by each article. The major subareas and findings from each priority area are presented. There were 766 articles in total, with 258 (34%) focusing on youth and/or young adults. Findings relevant to FDA from this review concern impact analysis, toxicity, health effects, addiction, marketing influences, communications, and behavior. IMPLICATIONS The Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science, CENIC, and COMET have had a high output of scientific articles since 2013. These Centers are unique in that the FDA supports science specifically to guide future regulatory actions. The 258 articles that have focused on youth and/or young adults are providing data for regulatory actions by the FDA related to the key priority areas such as the addictiveness of non-cigarette products, the effects of exposure to electronic cigarette marketing on initiation and cessation, and the impact of flavored products on youth and young adult tobacco use. Future regulations to reduce tobacco use will be guided by the cumulative evidence. These Centers are one innovative mechanism to promote important outcomes to advance tobacco regulatory science.

Abstract
We study the impact of new information on people's perceptions of the risks of e-cigarettes. In September 2019 the U.S. experienced an outbreak of e-cigarette, or vaping, associated lung injuries (EVALI). The EVALI outbreak created an information shock, which was followed by additional new information in a later CDC recommendation. We use data on consumer risk perceptions from two sets of surveys conducted before (HINTS survey data) and during the EVALI outbreak (Google Survey data). The empirical model examines changes in risk perceptions during the early crisis period when the CDC was warning consumers that they should avoid all vaping products and during a later period when the message was refined and focused on a narrower set of illegal vaping products that contain THC (the main psychoactive compound in marijuana). Econometric results suggest that the immediate impact of the first information shock was to significantly increase the fraction of respondents who perceived e-cigarettes as more harmful than smoking. As the outbreak subsided and the CDC recommendation changed to emphasize the role of THC e-cigarette products, e-cigarette risk perceptions were only partially revised downwards. Individuals who had higher risk perceptions showed a weaker response to the first information shock but were more likely to later revise their risk perceptions downwards. We conclude the paper by discussing the public policy issues that stem from having risk perceptions of e-cigarette relative to combustible cigarettes remain at these elevated levels where a substantial portion of consumers believe that e-cigarettes are more harmful than cigarettes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a decreasing trend in the proportion of individuals who perceive e-cigarettes to be less harmful than conventional cigarettes across the UK, Europe and the US. It is important to assess whether this may influence the use of e-cigarettes. We aimed to estimate, using a time series approach, whether changes in harm perceptions among current tobacco smokers have been associated with changes in the prevalence of e-cigarette use in England, with and without stratification by age, sex and social grade. METHODS Respondents were from the Smoking Toolkit Study, which involves monthly cross-sectional household surveys of individuals aged 16+ years in England. Data were aggregated monthly on ~ 300 current tobacco smokers between 2014 and 2019. The outcome variable was the prevalence of e-cigarette use. The explanatory variable was the proportion of smokers who endorsed the belief that e-cigarettes are less harmful than combustible cigarettes. Covariates were cigarette (vs. non-cigarette combustible) current smoking prevalence, past-year quit attempt prevalence and national smoking mass media expenditure. Unadjusted and adjusted autoregressive integrated moving average with exogeneous variables (ARIMAX) models were fitted. RESULTS For every 1% decrease in the mean prevalence of current tobacco smokers who endorsed the belief that e-cigarettes are less harmful than combustible cigarettes, the mean prevalence of e-cigarette use decreased by 0.48% (βadj = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.25-0.71, p < .001). Marginal age and sex differences were observed, whereby significant associations were observed in older (but not in young) adults and in men (but not in women). No differences by social grade were detected. CONCLUSIONS Between 2014 and 2019 in England, at the population level, monthly changes in the prevalence of accurate harm perceptions among current tobacco smokers were strongly associated with changes in e-cigarette use.

Abstract
Background: Smoke-free air policies exist to protect users and nonusers from exposure to tobacco smoke. Although electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) may expose passerby to nicotine and particulate matter, few US states regulate indoor use of ENDS. The purpose of this study was to investigate reported rationales for ENDS use and reported ENDS use in public smoke-free places by dual cigarette/ENDS users. Methods: A population of ENDS/cigarette co-users (n = 2051) was drawn from Wave 2 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) dataset (2014-2015). Harm reduction beliefs and cessation behavior of co-users were investigated as predictors of ENDS use in public smoke-free places using logistic regression. Results: Fifty-eight percent of dual users reported past 30-day ENDS use in public smoke-free places. Reported use of ENDS to cut down on cigarette smoking (OR: 2.38, 95% CI: 1.86, 3.05), as an alternative to quitting tobacco (OR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.37, 2.13), or because of belief that ENDS help people to quit cigarettes (OR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.20, 1.92) were significantly associated with increased odds of ENDS use in smoke-free places. Conclusions: Beliefs that ENDS were useful as cessation tools or posed modified risk to users and nonusers were associated with elevated odds of use ENDS in locations where conventional tobacco is prohibited. Due to limitations in the survey instrument, in-home ENDS use could not be directly assessed in this analysis. However, these self-reported findings suggest that use of ENDS in public places where cigarette use is prohibited is prevalent enough to be of concern for future regulation and enforcement efforts.

Abstract
The assessment of vaping topography has helped to identify characteristics associated with distinct vaping patterns. Available puff topography devices do not alter the subjective effects of vaping. However, one central construct related to drug abuse, unexplored in prior studies, is whether relative reinforcing effects (RRE) of vaping change when using a topography device. We examined the RRE of vaping when individuals vape through an e-cigarette with a mouthpiece topography device attached versus their own e-cigarette. Associations of demand indices for participants' own e-cigarette and for a research e-cigarette with a topography device were also explored. Forty-three e-cigarette users attended 1 experimental session where they completed 2 purchase tasks in different units of consumption, ml and puffs, with their preferred e-cigarette and with an e-cigarette with a mouthpiece. Puff topography was measured in the mouthpiece condition. All four purchase tasks showed the predicted inverse relationship between purchase and price. No differences in most demand indices were observed between both e-cigarettes, except for breakpoint (lowest price that suppresses consumption) and Omax (maximum expenditure) in ml units which both decreased when participants vaped through the mouthpiece device. Demand indices in ml units were more strongly associated. Data from the purchase tasks suggests that the presence of a mouthpiece topography device does not influence the RRE of vaping among e-cigarette users. Demand for e-cigarettes seems more consistent in ml units. Our results further evidence that mouthpiece topography devices represent a valid and reliable instrument to study RRE of e-cigarettes and, by extension, abuse liability. Abstract
BACKGROUND Delay discounting (DD) research has improved our understanding of important behavioral processes associated with tobacco use. Little research has explored DD among e-cigarette users, and these studies have exclusively examined money as the only available commodity. This secondary analysis of a laboratory study explored discounting for money and e-liquid among e-cigarette users using two single-commodity discounting (SCD) tasks and one cross-commodity discounting (CCD) task. A secondary goal was to explore the extent to which results from the SCD and CCD tasks were correlated to each other and with measures of e-cigarette use. METHODS E-cigarette users (N = 27) completed two SCD tasks and one CCD task. The SCD tasks assessed choices between various amounts of either money now versus money later (M-M) or e-liquid now versus e-liquid later (mL-mL). The CCD task assessed choices between e-liquid now versus money later (mL-M). Discounting results were compared using logk and AUClog. RESULTS Discounting was greatest in the mL-mL task, followed by the M-M task, and then the mL-M task. AUClog and logk were significantly correlated across all discounting tasks. Attempts to quit vaping was positively associated with logk and negatively associated with AUClog and in both SCD tasks. CONCLUSIONS E-cigarette users discount e-liquid more than money in a SCD task. However, when the two commodities, money and e-liquid (CCD), are compared the substance of abuse is discounted to a lesser extent. Interventions that provide alternative reinforcers to compete with the reinforcing effects of nicotine intake may be especially indicated for treating e-cigarette dependence.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Some HIV-positive smokers report ambivalence about quitting. Switching to electronic cigarettes (ECs) may be a viable option to reduce the negative health effects for smokers who are unable or unwilling to quit smoking combustible cigarettes (CCs). This study examined the acceptability and health-related effects of ECs in HIV-positive smokers who were not seeking smoking cessation treatment. METHODS HIV-positive smokers (N = 19) were enrolled and followed for 12 weeks. Cartridge-based ECs were provided at baseline, and E-liquid was provided weekly for 8 weeks. At baseline, weeks 1-8, and week 12, EC and CC use, cardiopulmonary function, respiratory symptoms, and carbon monoxide (CO) levels were measured. RESULTS At week 8, cigarettes per day (CPD) were reduced by more than 80%, with reduction maintained at week 12 (p's < .001). Cigarette dependence scores were 40% lower at week 8 than at baseline (p < .001). Seven (36.8%) participants reported transitioning completely from CCs to ECs. Mean CO decreased significantly from BL to week 8 (p < .05) and remained significantly lower at week 12 (p < .001). Intention to quit increased significantly over time. CONCLUSIONS Switching from CCs to ECs in HIV-positive smokers who are not ready to quit smoking in the next 30 days appears to be feasible. Beneficial effects were seen, such as reduced CPD, reduced CO and CC dependence, and increased motivation to quit. ECs may be promising as a harm reduction approach among HIV-positive smokers who are unable or unwilling to quit smoking.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Roll-your-own (RYO) cigarette smoking is uncommon among young smokers in the U.S. but may be more widespread among those experiencing homelessness as it is a less expensive source of cigarettes. This study examines the prevalence and correlates of RYO use among young cigarette smokers experiencing homelessness. METHODS The analytic sample consisted of 433 unaccompanied homeless youth who reported past month use of factory-manufactured cigarettes. Participants were sampled from 25 street and service sites in Los Angeles County, and completed a survey on their tobacco-related behaviors and cognitions. RESULTS RYO use was reported by 43% of cigarette smokers. Among those who filled RYOs with tobacco, 87% rolled them with used tobacco (typically mixed with new tobacco). Most RYO smokers reported engaging in high-risk smoking practices, such as smoking discarded cigarettes. Although RYO smokers were more likely than other smokers to perceive RYOs as less risky in general, these groups did not differ in the perceived relative harm, expense, and ease of access of RYOs compared to regular cigarettes. Multivariable analyses indicated that RYO use was associated with older age, less perceived riskiness of RYOs, greater exposure to RYO smokers, and stronger future intentions to smoke. CONCLUSION RYOs may encourage continued tobacco use among youth experiencing homelessness and pose additional health risks despite users' beliefs to the contrary. Future research is needed to obtain more detailed information on RYO practices and motivations for use, as well as how to address RYOs in efforts to reduce tobacco use in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The American Cancer Society discourages the dual use of electronic cigarettes (ECs) and cigarettes because such use has not resulted in reduced exposures to the harmful effects of smoking. American Indian (AI) people have the highest prevalence of smoking and of EC use in the United States, but very little is known about dual EC and cigarette use in AI communities. METHODS In 2016, 375 adult AI in Oklahoma who smoked cigarettes completed a survey about EC use (vaping). We describe vaping patterns, nicotine dependence, and reasons for EC use among the subset of 44 (12%) current dual EC users. To differentiate habitual EC users from occasional or merely curious users, we defined dual use as using ECs on some days or every day in the past 30 days. RESULTS About one-third of dual users vaped ten or more times daily. About two-thirds used a tank product. Eleven percent used ECs without nicotine and another 9% were unsure of the nicotine content. A minority (40%) enjoyed vaping more than smoking, and most (76%) would smoke first on days they did both. Thirty-one percent vaped within 5 min of waking and another 24% within 30 min. Although the two-item heaviness of use index did not differ significantly between smoking and vaping, the ten-item Penn State Dependence Index (PSDI) suggested greater dependence on smoking than vaping (11.02 vs. 6.42, respectively; p < .0001). The most common reasons for vaping were to reduce smoking (79%), enjoyment of flavors (78%), and ability to vape where smoking is not allowed (73%). Perceptions of less harm to others (69%) or to self were the next most common (65%). Fewer than half used ECs to reduce stress, for affordability, or because others used them. CONCLUSIONS Nearly 20% of dual users used ECs either without nicotine or without knowing if the product contained nicotine. The PSDI indicated greater dependence on smoking than vaping. Reasons for vaping were nearly equal between smoking reduction and enjoying flavors. Understanding patterns of dual use will inform future efforts to address nicotine dependence for AI communities with high prevalence of smoking.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many American Indian communities have a high prevalence of smoking and e-cigarette use, but factors associated with their dual use are rarely studied. METHODS In 2016, a total of 375 American Indian adults who smoke completed paper surveys regarding cigarette and e-cigarette use and provided saliva for cotinine levels. In 2018, cross-sectional analyses were performed, comparing dual users (12%), defined as using e-cigarettes on some or every day for the past 30 days, with never users of e-cigarettes (37%). RESULTS Compared with never users, dual users were younger, more often reported history of depression (56% and 29%, respectively; p<0.01) and family history of smoking-related disease (77% and 59%, respectively; p<0.05), had lower harm perceptions of e-cigarettes (27% and 47%, respectively; p<0.01) or vapor (14% and 35%, respectively; p<0.01), and more often perceived e-cigarettes as cessation aids (75% and 16%, respectively; p<0.01) and as less harmful than cigarettes (70% and 17%, respectively; p<0.01). Dual users were less often uncertain/unknowing about e-cigarette benefits or harms (p<0.01) and more often reported likelihood to quit smoking (49% and 24%, respectively; p<0.01) and prior attempt to quit smoking, ever (89% and 67%, respectively; p<0.01) or in the past year (55% and 32%, respectively; p=0.01). Cigarette consumption and cotinine levels did not differ between groups. Dual users more often tried other nicotine products (p<0.02) and more often lived with a vaping partner/spouse (45% and 6%, respectively; p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Dual users perceived e-cigarettes as less harmful than cigarettes and more as cessation aids than cigarette-only users did, but cigarette consumption did not differ between groups. Whether e-cigarettes will reduce smoking-related disparities among American Indian people remains undetermined.

Abstract
Smoking cigarettes and e-cigarettes is widely popular among Chinese students. Considering that school personnel are considered role models in the student community, we investigated the prevalence and determinants of such behavior among high school personnel in China so as to provide references for future related intervention measures. We used a stratified cluster sampling design on a total number of 3311 school employees recruited from 33 representative schools. Complex sampling analysis and logistic regressions were used for univariate and multivariate analyses. Among 3194 participants that met the study criteria, 7.4% were cigarette users, and 3.6% e-cigarette consumers. For conventional cigarette smokers, certain characteristics, such as being older and male, attaining less education, and having been exposed to secondhand smoke, were associated with heavier smoking. Nevertheless, e-cigarette users were predominantly male and of younger age. Those who understood the hazards of conventional cigarette smoking had less inclination to smoke but were at a higher risk of e-cigarette use. Our analysis suggests that it is necessary to target different populations for monitoring and controlling conventional cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use respectively among school personnel. In addition, China is in need of more relevant and strict anti-smoking regulations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The capability of electronic cigarette devices (e-cigs) to deliver nicotine is key to their potential to replace combustible cigarettes. We compared nicotine delivery and subjective effects associated with the use of two classes of e-cigarettes and cigarettes. METHODS 14 e-cigarette users were instructed to vape their own e-cigarette device every 20 seconds for 10 minutes while blood was drawn at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10,12, and 15 minutes after initiating vaping. Users rated withdrawal symptoms and side effects before and after vaping. E-cigarette devices were classified as first-generation (same size as cigarette, no activation button) or advanced (larger than cigarette with an activation button). Separately, 10 cigarette smokers completed a similar protocol. Fisher's Exact Test and two-sided t-tests were used as appropriate to determine differences in outcomes between first-generation e-cigarette users, advanced e-cigarette users, and smokers. RESULTS Compared to first-generation devices, advanced devices were associated with greater serum nicotine Cmax (ng/ml) (11.5 v. 2.8, p = 0.0231) and greater nicotine boost (ng/ml) (10.8 v. 1.8, p = 0.0177). Overall, e-cigarettes users experienced a significant reduction in withdrawal and craving, although there were no significant differences between users of first-generation and advanced devices. Comparing e-cigarettes overall to cigarettes, cigarettes were associated with greater Cmax (25.9 v. 9.0, p = 0.0043) and greater nicotine boost (21.0 v. 8.2, p = 0.0128). CONCLUSIONS Advanced e-cigarettes delivered significantly more nicotine than first-generation devices but less than combustible cigarettes. Overall, e-cigarette use was associated with a reduction in withdrawal and craving with no reported side effects. The wide variation in nicotine absorption from different e-cigarette devices should be considered in studies of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION E-cigarettes were invented in China, and most of the world’s e-cigarettes have been produced in China. However, awareness and use of e-cigarettes in China are lower than in Europe and America. Against the backdrop of the increasing use of e-cigarettes, the supervision of e-cigarettes in China has been almost non-existent. METHODS A literature search was carried out in five popular Chinese and English databases. These databases were PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, China national knowledge infrastructure (CNKI), and Wan-fang database. RESULTS Twenty-one studies were identified, and a comprehensive analysis of e-cigarette awareness ratio was conducted for different regions of China and according to gender, age group, and smoking status. We also examined e-cigarette use and associated risk factors, and the relationship between e-cigarette use and smoking cessation. In 2015, the prevalence of ‘ever use’ and ‘current use’ of e-cigarettes in China were 3.1% and 0.5%, respectively. The review indicates that the awareness ratio of e-cigarettes was about 66% in Hong Kong, whereas the ratio for Tianjin was lower (43.6%). Online sales were the main channel for selling e-cigarettes to 80% of the users. Awareness of e-cigarettes has been increasing in China. Awareness was higher in men compared to women in all age groups. Nevertheless, e-cigarette use in China was lower than in developed countries. E-cigarette users were more likely to try to quit smoking, but the relationship between e-cigarette use and smoking cessation is still unclear. Governance is necessary for e-cigarette use and marketing effort. CONCLUSIONS This study investigated the awareness and use of e-cigarettes in China and the existing regulations for e-cigarette use and marketing. The lack of regulations for e-cigarette use and the unrestricted practice encourage the increase in adoption of e-cigarettes and misconceptions of the benefits of using e-cigarettes. Hence, it is crucial that the government of China prioritize the establishment and implementation of regulations for e-cigarette use and marketing.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Electronic cigarette (e-cig) use has increased dramatically over the past decade, rates of e-cig use among those with a chronic mental illness has largely been unexplored. Exploring this relationship for adults with a mental illness is necessary when examining the health needs of this population. METHODS Data from the 2016 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) was used to explore associations between e-cig use and chronic mental illness. E-cig use was explored in two different contexts, having tried an e-cig at least once and current e-cig use. Chronic mental illness was categorized as depression, anxiety, emotional disorder, or ADD, bipolar, schizophrenia, other disorder. RESULTS Rates of ever trying an e-cig and current e-cig use were higher among those with a chronic mental illness. Complex logistic regressions suggested having a chronic mental illness significantly increases the likelihood of both trying an e-cig and being an e-cig user. CONCLUSIONS Increased likelihood of e-cig use in chronic mental illness supports previous findings. This may be due to perceptions that e-cigs are less harmful and they provide ways of socially connecting with others. IMPLICATIONS Current knowledge surrounding e-cig use in this population is lacking. The 2016 NHIS allows for a nationally representative prediction of e-cig use in this population. This data is relevant in monitoring potential harm caused by e-cigs, in addition it may be helpful when assessing the value of e-cigs as a smoking cessation tool for those with a mental illness.

Abstract
Smoking status following cardiac events strongly predicts future morbidity and mortality. Using a nationally representative sample of United States adults, aims of this study were (1) to estimate use of, and attitudes towards, tobacco products as a function of level of cardiac risk, and (2) to explore changes in attitudes and tobacco use among adults experiencing a recent myocardial infarction (MI). Data were obtained from the first and second waves of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study. Use and attitudes towards tobacco products were examined at Wave 1 among adults with no chronic health condition (n = 18,026), those with risk factors for heart disease (n = 4593), and those who reported ever having had an MI (n = 643). Changes in perceived risk of tobacco and use between the two waves and having an MI in the last 12 months (n = 240) were also examined. Those who reported lifetime MI were more likely to believe that smoking/using tobacco was causing/worsening a health problem. Having had a recent MI event increased perceived tobacco-related risk and attempts at reduction/quitting, but did not significantly impact combusted tobacco cessation/reduction or uptake of non-combusted tobacco products. Sociodemographic characteristics and use of other tobacco products were associated with change in use of tobacco products. Those who have an MI are sensitized to the harm of continued smoking. Nonetheless, having an MI does not predict quitting combusted tobacco use or switching to potentially reduced harm products. Intense intervention is necessary to reduce combusted use in this high-risk population.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the characteristics associated with cancer survivors which indicate continued cigarette smoking at or around the time of cancer diagnosis. METHODS A total of 631 survivors were recruited in four cancer centers in Memphis, TN, between March 2015 and June 2016. To increase the probability of accurate reporting, surveys were conducted anonymously. A total of 112 respondents reported they were current smokers and 202 reported they were former smokers (n = 314), who comprised the sample. RESULTS We found that the rate of daily e-cigarette use among cancer survivors who smoked was 15.2% versus 3.9% in cancer survivors who no longer smoked. The national rate of adult e-cigarette use is 3.5%. Multivariate models correlated the characteristics of current versus former smokers and revealed that increasing age (aOR = 0.97, p < .0001), decreasing education (aOR = 2.39, p < .02), and current use of e-cigarettes (aOR = 3.74, p < .00045) were frequently associated with current cigarette smoking. CONCLUSIONS While age and gender were associated with continued smoking, current use of e-cigarettes was associated with almost four times higher odds of being a current smoker. Further research is needed to determine if use of e-cigarettes deters or promotes the smoking cessation process, at least in cancer survivors. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Among cancer survivors who continue to smoke after a cancer diagnosis, use of e-cigarettes is highly prevalent; research is needed to determine whether use of e-cigarettes promotes, has no effect, or hinders smoking cessation efforts among this vulnerable population.

Abstract
Smoking is more prevalent in persons living with HIV than the general population and is linked to increased morbidity and mortality. Some have suggested that based on current knowledge of harms and benefits, it may be feasible to advise smokers who are unable or unwilling to quit to switch to electronic cigarettes (ECs) as a less harmful alternative. We conducted 25 qualitative interviews with HIV-positive current or former smokers to explore perceived barriers to smoking cessation and perceptions of ECs. A high level of nicotine dependence, smoking as a form of stress management, motivational factors (including lack of readiness, low self-efficacy, ambivalence toward quitting), and having a social network of smokers were identified as cessation barriers. Low knowledge of ECs and uncertainty about EC safety and efficacy were barriers to EC uptake. However, current smokers indicated a willingness to try ECs. This study provides evidence that HIV-positive smokers face significant individual and environmental barriers to cessation. ECs may have potential as a harm reduction strategy in this population; however, there is a significant need for education regarding use and relative safety.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As e-cigarette use increases, questions about individual and public health effects remain unanswered (e.g. cessation tool, addiction path). Despite increasing use, few studies have focused on vape shop patrons. This study examined whether vape shop patrons believe their health is affected by the use of e-cigs; more specifically, the aim was to evaluate the association between e-cig use, change in tobacco use, and perception of health. METHODS A survey of e-cig users (N=78) was conducted in vape shops. Questions included e-cig and traditional tobacco use, health perceptions, and demographics. Descriptive techniques were used to characterize participants as either those who perceived e-cig use improved their health or those who perceived their health unaffected. Logistic regression assessed the association between change in tobacco use, e-cig use, and perception of health effects. RESULTS Most reported daily e-cig (91%) and current (11.5%) or former (78.2%) combustible cigarette use. Approximately, three-fourths (76.9%) perceived better health; the remainder (23.1%) perceived unaffected health. Change in cigarette use was significantly associated with perceptions that health is better with e-cig use. Participants who decreased cigarette use by 2-3 cartons/month and more than 3 cartons/month were significantly more likely to indicate that e-cig use has improved their health compared to those who decreased tobacco use by 1.5 cartons or fewer per month (OR=4.35, 95% CI: 1.13-16.9; OR=25.67, 95% CI: 2.97-221.7, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The majority of e-cig users perceived better health. Our findings suggest that health campaign designers should carefully assess the scientific uncertainty surrounding the use of these devices and consider means to clearly convey this information. Given the lack of scientific agreement on the health effects of e-cigs and the important role that perceptions play in behavior, health campaign designers, health education practitioners, policy makers, and health care providers should err on the side of caution when advising individuals about e-cig use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the changing landscape of tobacco products in recent years, the array of products through which children could be exposed to nicotine has grown substantially. Thus, it is particularly important to understand adults' perceptions of the harms of nicotine to children and to identify any sociodemographic factors related to inaccurate risk perceptions. METHODS Data were drawn from 2015 to 2016 US nationally representative surveys (n = 11 959). Using multinomial logistic regression analyses, we examined whether race, sex, education, tobacco product use, and having a minor child in the home are associated with the level of perceived harmfulness of nicotine to children. RESULTS Although the majority of respondents characterized nicotine as "definitely harmful" to children, there were notable subgroup differences. Compared with women, men had significantly lower odds of characterizing nicotine as "definitely harmful" to children. Tobacco product users had significantly lower odds of endorsing "definitely harmful" or "don't know" than nonusers. African American non-Hispanic individuals, Hispanic individuals, and "other" non-Hispanic individuals had significantly lower odds of endorsing "definitely harmful" or "maybe harmful" than white individuals. CONCLUSIONS Although most adults perceive nicotine exposure as harmful for children, there are important differences based on sex, racial and/or ethnic background, and tobacco use status. The results reveal the need for public health efforts to better understand and target inaccurate risk perceptions among specific subgroups.
