Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aim to assess the association between depressive symptoms, depressive symptom severity and symptom clusters with tobacco use. We will also evaluate sex differences in these associations. METHOD This cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2018). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Tobacco use was categorized into four groups: cigarette use, smoked tobacco products (pipes and cigars), smokeless tobacco products (chewing tobacco and snuff), and non-tobacco use (reference group). RESULTS This study included 33,509 participants. Cigarette use was associated with a 0.83-unit increase in total PHQ-9 scores (95% CI = [0.63, 1.04]), and 1.73 times higher odds of reporting depressive symptoms (95% CI = [1.48, 2.02]) compared to non-tobacco use. However, the use of smoked and smokeless tobacco was not associated with depressive symptoms. In females, cigarette use showed a stronger association with total PHQ-9 scores (aCoef = 1.23, 95% CI = [0.92, 1.55]) than in males (aCoef = 0.45, 95% CI = [0.21, 0.69]). Additionally, female smoked tobacco users showed positive associations with both PHQ-9 scores and the presence of depressive symptoms, but this relationship was not observed in males. Furthermore, subgroup analysis revealed associations between cigarette use and cognitive-affective and somatic symptom clusters, as well as a relationship between the logarithm of total cigarette consumption and depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION Cigarette use was associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms with females having a stronger association. Further studies are needed to replicate these findings and examine the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Youth smoking and passive exposure is a serious public health problem. This study examined the prevalence of tobacco use and passive exposure to smoke among adolescent athletes. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in Ankara, Türkiye, in 2023. It was based on the survey data from 201 licensed athletes, of whom 36.3% were female and 63.7% were male, aged 13-14 years, residing in Ankara province. The respondents were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their use of tobacco products and exposure to secondhand smoke. RESULTS The mean age of the respondents was 13.4 ± 0.5 years, with a mean sports age of 3.2 ± 2.0 years. Among the athletes, 92% (n=185) reported they never used tobacco products, 7.0% (n=14) tried, 0.5% (n=1) quit using tobacco products, and 0.5% (n=1) currently smoke tobacco. Among the adolescents, 59.2% reported passive exposure to tobacco smoke inside and 71.1% outside the home. The rates of daily secondhand smoking (≥1 h or <1 h) did not differ by gender (p>0.05), but weekly passive exposure was significantly higher in male athletes (67.0% vs 33.0%, p<0.05), as was no exposure (female: 34.1%, male: 65.9%, p<0.05). Among all athletes, 46.7% reported that at least one of their parents smoked, while 19.9% reported that both parents smoked. CONCLUSIONS Tobacco use among adolescent athletes in Türkiye is minimal, yet passive smoking is a significant concern. Given the high prevalence of passive smoke exposure reported among adolescent athletes, particularly at home and in outdoor settings, further attention to reducing such exposure is warranted. The low prevalence of active tobacco use in this population suggests that preventive measures may be effective in maintaining low smoking rates as these adolescents age. Significantly lower prevalence of active smoking among the respondents could be attributed to their active engagement in sports and their young 13-14 years age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco smoking is a major worldwide health issue that contributes to millions of deaths annually. Electronic cigarettes (E-cigarettes) are also harmful. Smoke/vapor from E-cigarettes and tobacco products consists of free radicals and other toxic substances. Tissue damage in smokers, such as lungs, is highly observed and is linked to oxidative damage and inflammation. METHODS The inflammation and oxidative status of rat lung tissues was examined following whole-body smoke/vapor exposure via E-cigarette, cigarette, and waterpipe for 2 h daily, 5 days per week for 8 weeks. RESULTS Lung tissue damage was higher in cigarettes and waterpipe groups compared to the E-cigarette group. Collectively, there was a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory mediators (TNF-α, NF-κB, IL-1β) with the exception of IL-1β in the E-cigarettes group. As for the anti-inflammatory mediators (Nrf2 and IL-10), a significant reduction (p < 0.05) of mRNA expression was observed with the exception of Nrf2 in the E-cigarette group. As for IL-6, there was a significant increase in its mRNA expression (p < 0.05) in the cigarette and waterpipe groups. There was also a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the antioxidant activity of all antioxidants tested (GPx, SOD, and CAT) in all groups with the exception of SOD in the cigarette group. CONCLUSION Smoke/vapor administered via E-cigarette, cigarette, and waterpipe elicits inflammation and oxidative stress in rat lungs that is accompanied by histopathological changes.

Abstract
Background Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure remains a critical public health concern, especially for adolescents, who are more susceptible to its harmful effects and may initiate smoking as a result. SHS, comprising both mainstream and sidestream smoke, contains over 7000 chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic. Adolescents exposed to SHS are more likely to experiment with smoking due to environmental influences, peer pressure, and familial smoking behavior. Objective This study aims to examine the relationship between SHS exposure and smoking attitudes and behaviors among adolescents aged 13-15 in the Gaza Strip, where SHS exposure and tobacco use remain prevalent. Methods Data were obtained from the 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), a cross-sectional, school-based survey targeting students in Gaza. The study employed a two-stage cluster sampling design to ensure a representative sample. SHS exposure was assessed in multiple contexts, including home, public enclosed spaces, and outdoor areas. Smoking attitudes, initiation behaviors, and demographic variables were also analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and multivariable logistic regression to identify predictors of smoking behaviors. Results Of the 1536 adolescents surveyed, 62.3% reported SHS exposure at home, and 53.9% reported exposure in enclosed public spaces. Adolescents exposed to SHS were significantly more likely to experiment with smoking, with curiosity (62.2%) and peer influence being key motivators. Additionally, SHS exposure in both indoor and outdoor environments was associated with a higher likelihood of shisha experimentation. Females reported higher SHS exposure rates than males across all environments (P < .001). Conclusion SHS exposure significantly increases the risk of smoking initiation among adolescents in the Gaza Strip. These findings emphasize the need for targeted public health interventions, including stricter smoke-free legislation, parental education, and awareness campaigns aimed at reducing SHS exposure and preventing smoking uptake in youth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Secondhand smoke exposure (SHS) is a major modifiable risk factor for morbidity and premature mortality. No study has assessed inequalities by sex in SHS exposure among adolescents globally. This study aims to explore the variations in SHS exposure among adolescents globally based on sex. METHODS Most recent data from 122 countries and territories that conducted the Global Youth Tobacco Survey between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2020, comprising 557,332 respondents aged 11-17 years, were used to assess the prevalence of SHS exposure at home, in other enclosed public places, and at school. Multivariable Poisson regression models were performed to investigate the association between sex and SHS exposure in each country. RESULTS A total of 195,299 (35.0 %) adolescents reported exposure to SHS at home, 256,938 (46.1 %) in other enclosed public places, 258,528 (46.4 %) at school, and 399,644 (71.7 %) in any place. There were important inequalities in the prevalence of SHS exposure between countries. More girls than boys reported exposure to SHS at home in 54 countries (vs. one country with prevalence higher in boys than girls) and in other enclosed public places in 50 countries (vs. six countries). In contrast, the prevalence of SHS exposure at school was significantly higher in boys than girls in 25 countries while the opposite was observed in 14 countries. CONCLUSIONS These findings emphasize the disparities in SHS exposure between adolescent boys and girls and, hence, highlight the urgent need to strengthen smoke-free policies and adopt targeted policies to address them.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The adverse effects of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure on health have been well established. Using the NHMS 2002: Adolescent Health Survey (AHS), this study attempts to evaluate the extent and factors associated with SHS exposure among Malaysian school-going adolescents. METHODS We conducted the NHMS 2022: AHS to gather a representative sample of school-age teenagers. We employed a cross-sectional study design and a multi-stage sampling procedure. We utilized a pre-validated self-administered questionnaire to collect data from the selected respondents. The data analysis included adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Additionally, we investigated the possible two-way interactions between the independent variables. RESULTS The SHS prevalence was 42.0%. Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) was associated with male gender (AOR=1.28; 95 CI: 1.20-1.38), older age (AOR=1.46; 95% CI: 1.33-1.60), Malay (AOR=1.88; 95% CI: 1.49-2.37), Bumiputra Sabah (AOR=2.23; 95% CI: 1.67-2.99), Bumiputra Sarawak (AOR=2.43; 95% CI: 1.80-3.28), and Chinese ethnicity (AOR=2.89; 95 CI: % 2.30-3.64), as well as current smoking (AOR=2.78; 95% CI: 2.50-3.09), having separated or divorced parents (AOR=1.12; 95% CI: 1.02-1.23), and parental tobacco product use (AOR=4.75; 95% CI: 4.44-5.08). We found significant interactions between: 1) Age group with gender and ethnicity; 2) Gender and ethnicity; and 3) Parental smoking status with gender, response to tobacco use, parents' marital status, and ethnicity. CONCLUSIONS Parental characteristics, sociodemographic characteristics, and SHS exposure are strongly correlated. In addition, there is evidence of smoking displacement to the house from other areas by parents/guardians. This study offers a fresh perspective on how these variables influence the likelihood of SHS exposure for Malaysian school-age teenagers. More efforts should focus on parental variables and sociodemographic traits, especially parental smoking cessation support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Proactive health behaviours are crucial for enhancing adolescent health. However, there is limited evidence on the potential pathways through which social support influences adolescents' proactive health behaviours. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the relationships between social support, self-efficacy, peer relationships and proactive health behaviours in Chinese adolescents. METHODS From October to December 2023, we recruited 6075 adolescents from Shandong Province, China. They completed self-report questionnaires on social support, self-efficacy, peer relationships and proactive health behaviours. RESULTS Linear regression analysis indicated that social support was positively associated with proactive health behaviours among adolescents (β = 0.571, 95% CI = 0.542, 0.600). Further mediation analyses revealed that self-efficacy (β = 0.085, 95% CI = 0.069,0.101) and peer relationships (β = 0.156, 95% CI = 0.136,0.177) mediated this relationship. CONCLUSIONS Increased social support was associated with better proactive health behaviours in Chinese adolescents. Additionally, higher self-efficacy and positive peer relationships enhanced this association. Our findings emphasised the significance of providing supportive environments at home and at school to promote proactive health behaviours in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of tobacco and alcohol use among adolescents is alarming, and these substances are among the leading risk factors for current and future health among adolescents. Physical activity has the potential to help prevent substance use among adolescents. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between physical activity, modes of transportation to or from school, and sitting time with tobacco and alcohol use among 222,495 adolescents. METHODS This cross-sectional study used data from national surveys conducted in 66 countries, obtained through the Global School-based Student Health Survey, and included adolescents aged 11 to 17 years. Information on physical activity, transportation to or from school, sitting time, and tobacco and alcohol use was collected through self-report questionnaires. Generalized linear models were employed to estimate the associations between these variables. RESULTS The analysis, adjusted for sex, age, and region, revealed that being physically active was associated with lower odds of smoking (OR: 0.86, 95%CI: 0.83-0.89), alcohol use (OR: 0.74, 95%CI: 0.72-0.76), binge drinking (OR: 0.66, 95%CI: 0.62-0.69), and drunkenness (OR: 0.85, 95%CI: 0.83-0.88) compared to inactivity. Insufficiently active participants also had lower odds of tobacco use (OR: 0.83, 95%CI: 0.80-0.85), alcohol use (OR: 0.77, 95%CI: 0.75-0.79), binge drinking (OR: 0.91, 95%CI: 0.87-0.96), and drunkenness (OR: 0.88, 95%CI: 0.85-0.90) compared to inactive participants. Additionally, active transportation to or from school was associated with lower odds of tobacco use (OR: 0.97, 95%CI: 0.95-0.99), alcohol use (OR: 0.94, 95%CI: 0.92-0.96), and binge drinking (OR: 0.78, 95%CI: 0.75-0.81) compared to those using passive transportation. Participants with acceptable sitting time, however, were more likely to use tobacco (OR: 1.48, 95%CI: 1.45-1.52), use alcohol (OR: 1.68, 95%CI: 1.64-1.72), binge drink (OR: 1.68, 95%CI: 1.62-1.75), and experience drunkenness (OR: 1.66, 95%CI: 1.62-1.69) compared to those with excessive sitting time. CONCLUSION Being physically active, even at insufficient levels, may have beneficial effects on tobacco and alcohol use in adolescents. Acceptable sedentary time, on the other hand, was positively associated with tobacco and alcohol use.

Abstract
Objective: Adolescent tobacco and E-cigarette use have been rising globally in the past decade. Iraq's post-war conflict and economic crises posed psychosocial and mental health trauma, contributing to increased vulnerability to drug and substance use among adolescents. This study looks to assess the potential relationship between current tobacco and E-cigarette smoking and exposure to smoking at home and school among Iraqi adolescents attending schools. Methods: Data analysis for the 2019 Iraq Global Youth Tobacco Survey, a cross-sectional study completed by 2560 Iraqi adolescents aged 11 to 17 years old was conducted. The survey tool which includes demographic, tobacco use, knowledge and attitudes towards tobacco use questions is anonymous and self-administered using paper-based bubble sheets that are scannable. Current tobacco and E-cigarette use (defined as past 30-days) were the main outcomes. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between the main outcomes and the following variables: participants' demographics, exposure to smoking, attitude and knowledge scores. Results: Current tobacco and E-cigarette smoking prevalence among Iraqi adolescents attending school were 14.9% (95% CI: 13.5%-16.4%) and 9.7% (95% CI: 8.6%-11.0%), respectively. Exposure to smoking at home was high among fathers (39.1%), mothers (13.9%), siblings smoke (23.9%), other individuals smoke (56.1%). The percentages of students who witnessed people smoking within school premises was 45.7% and observed teachers smoking in schools was 57.6%. The current use of tobacco smoking among Iraqi adolescents was significantly and positively associated with exposure to smoking by the father (AOR = 1.39; 95% CI: 1.05-1.85), mother (AOR = 1.84; 95% CI: 1.30-2.60), sibling (AOR = 3.50; 95% CI: 2.62-4.67), teacher (AOR = 1.48; 95% CI: 1.10-1.98), and people in school (AOR = 1.99; 95% CI: 1.57-2.53). Similarly, the current use of E-cigarettes was significantly associated with father smoking (AOR = 2.02; 95% CI: 1.29-3.16), sibling smoking (AOR = 3.09; 95% CI: 2.04-4.67), and people smoking in school (AOR2.02; 95% CI: 1.39-2.95). Conclusion: Stricter policies need to be enforced to ensure safer school environments that do not expose adolescents to smoking habits of teachers or other students.

Abstract
This study aimed to analyze patterns and predictors of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure among adolescents (12-16 years old) in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Nationally representative data from the most recent Global Youth Tobacco Survey in each country were analyzed (N = 17,220). SHS exposure at home, in public places, and at school was assessed. Descriptive statistics summarized exposure prevalence overall and by sex. Multivariable logistic regression examined factors associated with each SHS exposure's outcome. The results showed that SHS exposure was high overall, with exposure at home and school ranging from 12.7 to 20.7%, respectively, in Oman to 39.4% and 36.7%, respectively, in Kuwait. Almost half of the adolescents reported exposure to SHS in public places, with a prevalence of 40.8% in Saudi Arabia to 65.9% in Kuwait. The prevalence of exposure varied between countries, with the highest rates occurring in Kuwait. Girls had higher exposure at home, while boys had higher exposure in public and at school. Factors associated with higher exposure included parental smoking, friend smoking, and tobacco advertising. The belief that SHS is harmful was associated with lower home exposure. In conclusion, adolescents in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries are exposed to concerning levels of SHS, especially in public places. These findings underscore the urgent need for stronger tobacco control policies, including comprehensive smoke-free laws covering all public venues, to protect youth from SHS exposure. Additionally, the results support the development of targeted interventions promoting smoke-free homes and social norms against smoking.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexual behaviors, particularly risky sexual behavior, has become a serious public health concern among adolescents worldwide, presenting a substantial obstacle to the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, there is limited research using consistent and standardized methodology to examine associations between tobacco and alcohol use frequency and both total and risky sexual behaviors among adolescents. We aimed to examine the association between tobacco and/or alcohol use with both total and risky sexual behaviors among adolescents worldwide. METHODS Data were collected from the Global School-based Student Health Survey, which comprised 211,847 adolescents aged 12-17 years from 59 countries. The frequency of tobacco or alcohol use during the past 30 days was categorized as 0, 1-2, 3-5, 6-9, or ≥ 10 days. Tobacco and alcohol use were also categorized as non-use, tobacco use alone, alcohol use alone, and combined use. Multi-variable logistic regression analysis was used to examine both the independent and combined associations of tobacco and alcohol use with total and risky sexual behaviors. RESULTS Compared with no tobacco use, the odds ratio of engaging in sexual intercourse increased with the frequency of tobacco use from 1 to 2 days to ≥ 10 days (total: 2.03 [95% confidence interval 1.47-2.81] to 3.98[2.63-6.03]; risky: 2.43[1.75-3.38] to 4.21[3.26-5.42]), as well as with the frequency of alcohol use. Overall, combined users had greater likelihood of both total and risky sexual behaviors than tobacco users alone, alcohol users alone, and non-users. Similarly, the association between risky sexual behaviors and tobacco use alone was more pronounced among adolescent girls (vs. adolescent boys), as were those of risky sexual behaviors with alcohol use alone among younger adolescents aged 12-14 years (vs. aged 15-17 years) and with tobacco and/or alcohol use among adolescents in the Western Pacific region (vs. Regions of Africa and Americas). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest independent and combined associations between tobacco and/or alcohol use with sexual behaviors among adolescents, with variations across age, sex, and WHO region.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study used data from Brazil's National Student Health Survey (PeNSE), from 2015 and 2019, to compare consumption of tobacco products among adolescent students in Brazil and identify associated factors. The study variables were current cigarette smoking, use of other tobacco products and use of any tobacco product. Pearson's Chi-square test was used to ascertain associations between the variables; bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed using logistic regression. Cigarette smoking remained stable between 2015 (6.6%) and 2019 (6.8%), but use of any tobacco product increased (from 10.6% in 2015 to 14.8% in 2019), involving particularly hookahs (7.8%) and e-cigarettes (2.8%). Cigarette smoking was greater among adolescents aged 16 and 17, whose skin colour was black or brown, who missed classes without permission, who reported having no friends, displayed other risk factors, such as drinking alcoholic beverages, or who were passive smokers. The prevalence of smoking has increased over the years and is associated with sociodemographic aspects and other health risk behaviour, highlighting the need for lifelong health promotion actions.

Abstract
Background Understanding gender disparities in adolescent health behaviors is crucial for developing targeted health promotion strategies. This study uses data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) across 17 MENA countries to analyze gender differences in adolescent health behaviors, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview for both boys and girls. Methods This meta-analysis incorporates data from recent years of the GSHS, covering 17 MENA countries. The objective was to assess and compare health behaviors between adolescent girls and boys. A random-effects model was employed to calculate odds ratios for gender comparisons in these behaviors. Statistical analyses and modeling were performed using JAMOVI software. Results In most MENA countries, boys consumed more vegetables compared to girls. Girls were less likely to frequent fast food establishments (OR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.69-0.98) and generally exhibited better self-care behaviors. Boys reported a higher prevalence of physical altercations (OR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.88-2.51) and were more involved in fights (OR = 3.00, 95% CI: 2.46-3.67). Girls were more likely to miss school without permission and were consistently described as kinder and more helpful across various income levels. However, in some countries such as Oman and Tunisia, boys missed school more frequently. There were no significant gender differences in parental oversight of homework or knowledge of students' activities, but girls were reported to have stronger parental relationships and better parental understanding of their problems and free time, with exceptions in Morocco and the Palestinian Territory-Gaza. Boys were more likely to engage in smoking (OR = 3.57, 95% CI: 2.69-4.76) and other substance use. Conversely, girls reported higher levels of physical inactivity and loneliness, but also demonstrated greater kindness and helpfulness in school settings and stronger parental relationships. Conclusion Policymakers in the MENA region should develop and implement gender-specific interventions targeting key areas such as hygiene practices, physical activity, and substance use. By focusing on these targeted strategies, they can address the distinct health behaviors and needs of both boys and girls. Effective interventions in these areas are crucial for improving overall health outcomes and promoting healthier lifestyles, thereby enhancing adolescent health and well-being across the region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of tobacco is a significant global public health issue. According to the World Health Organization, tobacco use is a considerable risk factor for many diseases and causes more than 8 million deaths per year, with a disproportionate impact on low- and middle-income countries. Therefore, this systematic review was conducted to identify the factors influencing tobacco use among youth in low-income, lower-middle-income, and upper-middle-income countries. Study Design: A system review. METHODS The review followed the PRISMA guidelines, and the protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023430552). Several data sources were utilized, including PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and ProQuest, and cross-sectional data from participants aged 15‒24 underwent investigation. Original full-text articles have been published between 2015 and 2023. Out of the 2892 studies, 20 were included in this review after two reviewers confirmed the eligibility criteria. RESULTS The average age of the participants was (mean±standard deviation: 19.45±1.686). Most studies were conducted in lower-middle and upper-middle-income countries. Frequently reported influences were at the individual and social levels, including demographic, economic, and psychological parameters, attitude and knowledge, individual behavioral factors, parental education, family member tobacco use, stressful life events, and social networks. At the environmental level, factors included secondhand smoke exposure, community context, media channels, and access to tobacco. CONCLUSION The findings demonstrated a significant association between youth tobacco use and individual-, social-, and environmental-level factors. Consequently, specific interventions targeting these factors should be deployed to mitigate youth tobacco use in various socioeconomic settings.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Understanding who includes e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTPs) in smoke-free home or car rules could inform public health interventions, particularly in countries with high smoking prevalence and recently implemented national smoke-free laws, like Armenia and Georgia. METHODS In 2022, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among 1468 adults in 28 Armenian and Georgian communities (mean age=42.92 years; 51.4% female, 31.6% past-month smoking). Multilevel regression (accounting for clustering within communities; adjusted for sociodemographics and cigarette use) examined e-cigarette/HTP perceptions (risk, social acceptability) and use intentions in relation to: 1) including e-cigarettes/HTPs in home and car rules among participants with home and car rules, respectively (logistic regressions); and 2) intention to include e-cigarettes/HTPs in home rules (linear regression, 1 = 'not at all' to 7 = 'extremely') among those without home rules. RESULTS Overall, 72.9% (n=1070) had home rules, 86.5% of whom included e-cigarettes/HTPs; 33.9% (n=498) had car rules, 81.3% of whom included e-cigarettes/HTPs. Greater perceived e-cigarette/HTP risk was associated with including e-cigarettes/HTPs in home rules (AOR=1.28; 95% CI: 1.08-1.50) and car rules (AOR=1.46; 95% CI: 1.14-1.87) and next-year intentions to include e-cigarettes/HTPs in home rules (β=0.38; 95% CI: 0.25-0.50). Lower e-cigarette/HTP use intentions were associated with including e-cigarettes/HTPs in home rules (AOR=0.75; 95% CI: 0.63-0.88). While perceived social acceptability was unassociated with the outcomes, other social influences were: having children and no other household smokers was associated with including e-cigarettes/HTPs in car rules, and having children was associated with intent to include e-cigarettes/HTPs in home rules. CONCLUSIONS Interventions to address gaps in home and car rules might target e-cigarette/HTP risk perceptions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior research has reaffirmed lifestyle risk behaviors to cluster among adolescents. However, the lifestyle cluster effect on suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) was unclear among adolescents in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). No comparison of such associations was conducted across nations. METHODS Data from 45 LMICs were obtained from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) between 2009 and 2019. Lifestyle behavior factors were collected through a structured questionnaire. Suicidal ideation, plan, and attempt were ascertained by three single-item questions. Lifestyle risk scores were calculated via a sufficient dimension reduction technique, and lifestyle risk clusters were constructed using a latent class analysis. Generalized linear mixed models with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to estimate the lifestyle-STB associations. RESULTS A total of 229,041 adolescents were included in the final analysis. The weighted prevalence of suicidal ideation, plan, and attempt was 7.37%, 5.81%, and 4.59%, respectively. Compared with the favorable lifestyle group, the unfavorable group had 1.48-, 1.53-, and 3.11-fold greater odds of suicidal ideation (OR = 1.48, 95%CI: 1.30-1.69), plan (OR = 1.53, 95%CI 1.34-1.75), and attempt (OR = 3.11, 95%CI 2.64-3.65). Four clusters of lifestyle risk behaviors were identified, namely healthy lifestyles (H-L), insufficient intake of vegetables and fruit (V-F), frequent consumption of soft drinks and fast food (D-F), and tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking (S-A) clusters. Compared with H-L cluster, V-F cluster was associated with 43% and 42% higher odds of suicidal ideation and plan, followed by S-A cluster (26% for ideation and 20% for plan), but not significant in D-F cluster (P > 0.05). D-F cluster was associated with 2.85-fold increased odds of suicidal attempt, followed by V-F cluster (2.43-fold) and S-A cluster (1.18-fold). CONCLUSIONS Clustering of lifestyle risk behaviors is informative for risk stratification of STBs in resource-poor settings. Lifestyle-oriented suicide prevention efforts should be initiated among school-attending adolescents in LMICs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep quality (SQ) is essential in the overall well-being and quality of life, but little is known about the association of secondhand smoking (SHS) with SQ. This study assessed the relationship between SHS and SQ among adults who had never smoked in Ibadan, Nigeria. METHODS We identified 3193 respondents who had never smoked or used any form of tobacco product in the Community-based Investigation of the Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Diseases in the Ibadan and suburbs (COMBAT-CVDs) study. SHS was self-reported, SQ assessed using a sleep quality scale, and SQ scores were classified by the quartile distributions of SQ scores in this sample as good (< 7), moderate (7-13), fair (14-20), and poor (≥ 21), and logistic regression models were used to estimate the multivariable-adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the association between SHS and SQ in a two-sided test at P < 0.05. RESULTS The mean (SD) of age in this sample was 34.8 ± 15.1 years; 1621 (50.8%) were females, and 848 (26.6%) experienced SHS. The multivariable-adjusted odds by categories of SQ scores (using good SQ as reference) in the light of SHS were OR: 1.64 (95%CI 1.28, 2.12) for moderate SQ, OR: 1.88 (95%CI 1.46, 2.42) for fair SQ and OR: 2.14 (95%CI 1.66, 2.75) for poor SQ; P < 0.0001 after adjusting for relevant covariates. The sex- and age groups- stratified analyses revealed similar trends. CONCLUSION SHS is associated with higher odds of poor SQ in this study. Culturally relevant interventions for mitigating exposure to SHS might improve SQ and overall quality of life, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Abstract
The research on Indonesian adolescents' perception of tobacco control in schools is limited. This study aimed to explore the availability, affordability, and accessibility of tobacco among young adolescents in Yogyakarta Municipality, Indonesia, with a focus on advocating for school teenagers. Focus groups, comprising participants from diverse backgrounds and stakeholders, were conducted in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, to systematically collect varied data. The subsequent analysis employed a robust thematic approach, combining both inductive and deductive processes to ensure a nuanced exploration of emerging patterns and pre-existing frameworks. In addition to focus group data, the study incorporated insights from extensive field observations and research group discussions. The multifaceted approach enhanced the depth of analysis but also facilitated a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics. The findings of this study revealed that young adolescents found it extremely easy to purchase cigarettes from local markets. The smoking prevalence among young adolescents was relatively low, with only 10% of the respondents admitting to smoking. Although the Indonesian government has increased surveillance and regulations regarding smoking among young individuals, the actual implementation and effectiveness of these measures remain questionable. The existing anti-smoking approaches in Indonesia have been unsuccessful in curbing smoking among Indonesian school students. The study argues that it is crucial to recognize and value students' perceptions of smoking, as their knowledge of smoking is actively constructed. To address this issue, future anti-smoking education in schools should incorporate interactive sessions rather than solely relying on didactic approaches that highlight the harms of smoking. By engaging students in interactive discussions, they can actively participate in constructing their understanding of the consequences of smoking. Additionally, efforts should be made to enhance the implementation of tobacco control measures within schools and extend the reach of these measures to off-campus environments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous literature supports that tobacco smoking and second-hand smoking (SHS) exposure were strongly associated with poor mental health in the general population. However, there is a lack of empirical data on the relationship between tobacco smoking, SHS exposure and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). This study conducted a cross-sectional survey to explore PLEs and the associations of PLEs with tobacco smoking and SHS exposure among adolescents in China. METHODS A total sample of 67 182 Chinese adolescents were recruited from Guangdong province in China (53.7% boys, mean age = 12.79 years) from December 17 to 26, 2021. All adolescents have completed self-reported questionnaires on demographic characteristics, smoking status, SHS exposure and PLEs. RESULTS Within the sample, only 1.2% of participants had an experience of tobacco smoking while approximately three-fifths reported being exposed to SHS. 10.7% of adolescents reported frequent PLEs over the past month. Adolescents who smoked showed a higher prevalence of PLEs than in non-smoking samples. After controlling for confounders, SHS exposure was a robust risk factor for PLEs with or without the effect of tobacco smoking. DISCUSSION These findings support the importance of smoke-free legislation, and anti-smoking measures in educational settings directed at both adolescents and their caregiver, which may decrease occurring rates of PLEs among adolescents.

Abstract
The commercial determinants of health (CDoH) have a significant impact on the health and well-being of children and young people (subsequently referred to as young people). While most research has focused on the influence of harmful industry marketing on young people, more recent CDoH frameworks have emphasized that a range of commercial systems and practices may influence health and well-being. Focusing on the impact of traditional and digital media, contemporary marketing strategies and corporate production and consumption processes, the following article outlines the impact of the CDoH on the health and wellbeing of young people. The article also provides evidence about how young people conceptualize the impact of corporate actors on health, and their involvement in advocacy strategies to respond. The article recommends that when collaborating with young people to understand the impacts of and responses to the CDoH, we should seek to diversify investigations towards the impact of a range of corporate tactics, systems and structures, rather than simply focusing on the impacts of advertising. This should include considering areas and priorities that young people identify as areas for action and understanding why some young people are more vulnerable to commercial tactics than others. Youth are powerful allies in responding to the CDoH. Public health and health promotion stakeholders could do more to champion the voices of young people and allow them to be active participants in the decisions that are made about harmful commercial practices and health.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic is predicted to affect adolescent smoking behaviours. We aim to map profiles of adolescents' smoking behaviours in a rural district in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic and validate their smoking exposures using cotinine tests. This study applied an online survey followed by cotinine tests for high-school students in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. The participants were asked to complete the survey and participate in a cotinine test. Univariate and multivariate regressions were performed to seek potential determinants of the smoking status and diagnostic accuracy of the cotinine test. A total of 281 participants completed the survey, with 19.6% (n = 55) and 22.8% (n = 64) being ever-smokers and current smokers. The impacts of the pandemics on their smoking behaviours were found in the urgency and numbers of daily smoked cigarettes. Univariate regression analysis revealed age, gender, learning mode, and whether father/friend smokes correlate with the adolescents' smoking behaviours. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that the odds of planning to stop smoking were 0.01 (95% CI 0.001-0.22, p-value 0.003) for having positive attitudes towards cigarettes compared to none. Of the 65 cotinine tests, 19 tested positive, with the sensitivity and specificity of the cotinine test at 94.7% and 95.6%. The prevalence of adolescent smoking during the COVID-19 pandemic in Gunung Kidul is high, with the impacts of the pandemic on the urgency and number of cigarette smoke. There are opportunities to help them stop smoking by providing reliable quit-tobacco access and advocacy in collaboration with schools, parents, and health providers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Despite a decline in global smoking prevalence among adolescents, around 21 million youth report current cigarette smoking. Exposure to tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship (TAPS) is a risk factor for smoking initiation, and therefore the Article 13 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) requires comprehensive TAPS bans. We examined the associations between changes in youth cigarette smoking and implementation of Article 13. METHODS We used two rounds of cross-sectional data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) for 42 countries: first between 2006 and 2015, and second between 2017 and 2020. The GYTS data were linked with the WHO FCTC implementation reports from 2016 and 2018. The outcome was current smoking. Multilevel binary logistic regression models, stratified by country income level, were used to test the prevalence differences between the latest and previous GYTS rounds and their associations with TAPS bans with postestimations using marginal analyses. RESULTS The percentage of students currently smoking decreased from 10.0% (95% CI 8.0 to 12.1) to 7.7% (95% CI 6.1 to 9.3) from first to second GYTS rounds (p<0.001), adjusting for country clustering. In low-income and lower-middle-income countries, the degree of decrease significantly differed between countries with versus without bans on display, partial internet TAPS ban, ban on depiction of tobacco products and by number of TAPS measures, adjusting for age and sex of the respondents. In high-income and upper-middle-income countries, the degree of decrease significantly differed by presence (or absence) of partial or full internet TAPS ban, ban on product placement and by number of TAPS measures. CONCLUSION Implementation of TAPS bans is associated with decreased smoking among adolescents both in high-income and low-income countries. Enhanced and continuous efforts are necessary to protect youth from the promotion of tobacco and nicotine products.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although Indonesia has a considerable proportion of adolescent smokers, nationally representative studies of its determinants remain limited. The 2015 Indonesian Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS) was conducted with school-age adolescents and provided information about smoking behavior. This study aimed to examine the prevalence, determinants, and correlates of tobacco use among adolescents in Indonesia using the GSHS survey. METHODS A secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the 2015 Indonesian GSHS. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the determinants and correlates of tobacco use. RESULTS Our analysis showed that 9.1% of school-age adolescents had used tobacco products in the past 30 days. Most were 13-15 years (61.7%) and had attempted to stop smoking (92.4%). After adjusting for covariates, significant risk factors associated with tobacco smoking were older age groups (prevalence odds ratio [POR], 3.01-9.40; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.71-23.1), male (POR, 13.7; 95% CI, 8.71-21.5), psychological distress (POR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.05-1.90), smoking exposure (POR, 1.98-2.15; 95% CI, 1.35-3.42), and when both parents smoked (POR, 2.96; 95% CI, 1.78-4.94). In addition, tobacco use was associated with other risky behaviors, including sex with multiple partners, using drugs, drinking alcohol, and being involved in physical fights. CONCLUSION Tobacco use is high among Indonesian adolescents. This prevalence highlights the need for a more stringent tobacco control policy and tailored cessation programs for adolescents by considering important modifiable determinants of tobacco use among adolescents, including risky smoking-related behaviors.

Abstract
Exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) is prevalent in many countries, but the problem's scope is poorly understood globally, especially in developing countries. We aimed to estimate SHS exposure and its national and subnational burden of diseases in Iran, the second-largest country in the Middle East, during 2009-2020. The burden of diseases from SHS was estimated as disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for adolescents (10-18) year's non-smokers. Using comparative risk assessment methodologies, the calculations were based on disease-specific relative risk estimates with national and subnational SHS exposure data, and the uncertainty and sensitivity analysis was performed. The results of study showed that the trend of exposure to SHS is increasing in Iran. The highest DALY was related to lower respiratory infection (LRI), asthma, and otitis media, respectively. The national average asthma burden (DALY/100,000) has increased from 17.4 (11.8_23.9) in 2009 to 21.3 (13.9_30) in 2020, LRI decreased from 25.8 (21.5_30.2) to 19.8 (16.7_23.1), and national average burden of otitis media (DALY/100,000) has increased from 3.1(1.9_4.6) to 3.9(2.4_5.6). The increasing trend of otitis media and asthma DALYs attributable to SHS exposure in Iran requires more attention from policymakers to protect the population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adolescents are exposed to a wide range of high-risk health behaviors. This study aimed to investigate the high-risk health behaviors of adolescents in an Iranian adolescent population and gender differences. METHOD This cross-sectional descriptive study recruited high school students in Yazd city in center of Iran. Schools were randomly selected. In each school, all selected classes were included. Sampling in each class was census. The study investigated self-reported high-risk health behaviors. Students completed the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS), an anonymous, validated questionnaire. RESULTS 2420 students participated in this study (52.5% male). The age range was 12-19 years. Daily consumption of ≥1 serving of fruit and vegetables per day was reported by 77.4% and 49.5% of respondents, respectively. Adequate physical activity was reported by only 18.4% of adolescents, and significantly less frequently by girls than boys (p < 0.001). 11.8% were current smokers (M/F ratio: 2.6), and 20.5% (M/F ratio: 1.5) were ever used hookah. The prevalence of ever alcohol and substance abuse was 15.5% and 8.8%, respectively. The prevalence of tobacco and substance use was significantly higher in participants' boys than in girls (p < 0.001). Males were over twice more likely to report frequent fighting in the past 12 months than girls. Overall, girls reported more parental supervision than boys (82.1% vs. 73.4%) and parental monitoring (90.6% vs. 86.8%), while boys reported higher levels of awareness over leisure activities than girls (65.8% vs. 58.4%). CONCLUSIONS High-risk health behaviors are more common in boys than girls. Health policymakers should use these results in prioritizing and designing health interventions to promote youth health. Further studies are recommended to identify the factors influencing the prevalence of these behaviors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Most tobacco use begins in adolescence, causing dependence and prolonged use, and accounts for more than 8 million deaths worldwide annually. Monitoring adolescent tobacco use is critical to controlling it. Our study examined the prevalence and factors associated with tobacco use among adolescents in Nigeria. METHODS We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study among adolescent students in Ibadan, Nigeria, aged 11 to 18 years, from March through June 2021. We used a 2-stage cluster design to select 3,199 students from 23 schools. We adapted the Global Youth Tobacco Survey Core Questionnaire, version 1.2, for data collection and used logistic regression to assess factors associated with current tobacco use. We weighted all analyses for complex survey design and differential nonresponse at school, class, and student levels. RESULTS Prevalence of current use of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, or any tobacco were 1.4%, 1.1%, and 2.0%, respectively. Predictors of current tobacco use were male sex (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.13; 95% CI, 1.53-6.42); close friends as smokers (aOR = 3.10; 95% CI, 1.77-5.41); classmates as smokers (aOR = 3.12; 95% CI, 1.15-8.49); access to cigarette (aOR = 6.65; 95% CI, 2.55-17.33); perception that smoking is attractive (aOR = 3.15; 95% CI, 1.17-8.44); exposure to secondhand smoke (aOR = 2.93; 95% CI, 1.07-8.03); and internet awareness of tobacco use (aOR = 3.22; 95% CI, 1.48-7.04). CONCLUSION Prevalence of adolescent tobacco use was low in Ibadan. Predictors were peer influence, access to cigarettes, misperceptions about tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, and tobacco advertising. We recommend an antitobacco campaign that uses a peer education strategy, a comprehensive enforcement of tobacco advertising, and a ban on public smoking.

Abstract
Background Second-hand smoke exposure is prevalent amongst adolescents, despite of being a preventable risk factor associated with unfavourable outcomes. The distribution of this risk factor varies by underlying determinants and public health officers need contemporary evidence to update policies. Using the most recent data available from adolescents in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), we described the prevalence of second-hand smoking. Methods Pooled analysis of Global School-based Student Health (GSHS) surveys conducted from 2010 to 2018 was conducted. Two indicators were analysed based on information from the 7 days prior to the survey: a) any exposure to second-hand smoking (0 vs ≥1 days of exposure); and b) daily exposure (<7 vs 7 days). Prevalence estimates were carried out accounting for the complex survey design, and reported overall, by country, by sex, and by subregion. Findings GSHS surveys were administered in 18 countries, yielding a total of 95,805 subjects. Pooled age-standardised prevalence of second-hand smoking was 60.9% (95% CI: 59.9%-62.0%) with no substantial differences between boys and girls. The age-standardised prevalence of any second-hand smoking varied from 40.2% in Anguilla to 68.2% in Jamaica, and the highest prevalence was in the Southern Latin America subregion (65.9%). Pooled age-standardised prevalence of daily second-hand smoking was 15.1% (95% CI: 14.2%-16.1%), and was higher in girls than boys (16.5% vs 13.7%; p < 0.001). The age-standardised prevalence of daily second-hand smoking ranged between 4.8% in Peru to 28.7% in Jamaica, and the highest age-standardised prevalence was in Southern Latin America (19.7%). Interpretation The prevalence of any second-hand smoking is high among adolescents in LAC, though estimates changed substantially by country. While policies and interventions to reduce/stop smoking are implemented, attention should also be paid to avoid second-hand smoke exposure. Abstract
BACKGROUND Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is associated with negative emotions in adolescents, but the association between SHS exposure and negative emotions has been understudied, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Hence, we studied the association between SHS exposure and negative emotions among 12-15-year-old non-smoking adolescents from 63 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS We calculated the pooled prevalence of SHS exposure, loneliness, and anxiety in 12-15-year-old non-smoking adolescents. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate country-specific associations between SHS exposure and negative emotions, after adjusting for important confounders. Meta-analyses were performed to evaluate the overall, regional, and country-income level pooled associations. RESULTS Of the adolescents included in the analysis, 34.88 % had less than daily SHS exposure and 13.41 % were exposed to SHS daily. The overall prevalence of loneliness and anxiety in the adolescents was 10.51 % and 8.95 %, respectively. Exposure to SHS in the past 7 days was associated with loneliness and anxiety, with odds ratios (95 % confidence intervals) of 1.15 (1.09-1.21) and 1.24 (1.17-1.31), respectively. These positive associations were observed in girls, but not in boys. In addition, there was a positive dose-response relationship between the day of exposure to SHS and loneliness and anxiety. LIMITATIONS The GSHS data were obtained from a self-report questionnaire and the participants were only adolescents in school. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed a positive association between SHS exposure and negative emotions among non-smoking adolescents from LMICs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) seeks to realize the right to health through national tobacco control policies. However, few states have met their obligations under Article 14 of the FCTC to develop evidence-based policies to support tobacco cessation. This article examines how human rights obligations could provide a legal and moral basis for states to implement greater support for individuals to overcome their addiction to tobacco. ANALYSIS The United Nations (UN) has a well-established legal framework for promoting human rights, looking to the right to health to realize health autonomy. Where addiction undermines autonomy, it is widely acknowledged that addiction presents a significant barrier to cessation for individuals who use tobacco, undermining the right to health. The UN human rights system could, therefore, provide a complementary basis for monitoring state obligations under Article 14 of the FCTC, identifying challenges to FCTC implementation and motivating states to support tobacco cessation. CONCLUSIONS The United Nations' human rights system offers a mechanism that could be used to monitor Framework Convention on Tobacco Control implementation in national policy, facilitating accountability for the progressive realization of cessation support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditionally, Curcuma xanthorriza (CX), black cumin seed (BC), and honey have been used by the Indonesian people as medicinal ingredients to treat various health symptoms. CX extracts and BC have been proven in the laboratory as chemopreventive agents, antioxidants, and immunomodulators. In this study, we developed CX extract, BC oil, and honey into herbal honey preparations (CXBCH) and hypothesized that the preparations show chemopreventive activity. The purpose of the study was to determine the CXBCH potential as chemopreventive, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory. METHOD In this experimental laboratory research, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and cytotoxic activities were tested on human mammary cancer cell lines (T47D cells) while the chemopreventive activity of the CXBCH preparations on Sprague Dawley (SD) rats induced with dimethylbenzene(a)anthracene (DMBA). RESULTS CXBCH preparations demonstrated immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and cytotoxic activities in T47D, Hela, and HTB-183 cells and in DMBA-induced SD rats, as the preparations inhibited tumor nodule formation, increased the number of CD4, CD8 and CD4CD25 cells, and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity, and decreased serum NO levels. CONCLUSIONS CXBCH preparations display chemopreventive, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A large number of people around the world are exposed to the risks of passive smoking. This prospective study aimed to examine the association between secondhand smoke exposure, exposure time, and the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and determine whether this association was influenced by genetic susceptibility. METHODS The study included 214244 participants of the UK Biobank who were initially free of CKD. Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the associations between secondhand smoke exposure time and the risks of CKD in people who have never smoked. The genetic risk score for CKD was calculated by a weighted method. The likelihood ratio test comparing models was used to examine the cross-product term between secondhand smoke exposure and genetic susceptibility to CKD outcomes. RESULTS During a median of 11.9 years of follow-up, 6583 incidents of CKD were documented. Secondhand smoke exposure increased the risk of CKD (HR=1.09; 95% CI: 1.03-1.16, p<0.01), and a dose-response relationship between CKD prevalence and secondhand smoke exposure time was found (p for trend<0.01). Secondhand smoke exposure increases the risk of CKD even in people who never smoke and have a low genetic risk (HR=1.13; 95% CI: 1.02-1.26, p=0.02). There was no statistically significant interaction between secondhand smoke exposure and genetic susceptibility to CKD (p for interaction=0.80). CONCLUSIONS Secondhand smoke exposure is associated with higher risk of CKD, even in people with low genetic risk, and the relationship is dose dependent. These findings change the belief that people with low genetic susceptibility and without direct participation in smoking activities are not prone to CKD, emphasizing the need to avoid the harm of secondhand smoke in public places.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smoking among adolescents in schools is a major global public health concern. There is limited evidence regarding prevalence and associated factors in Vietnam. OBJECTIVE To compare the prevalence of smoking and associated factors among in-school adolescents aged 13-17 years in Vietnam between 2013 and 2019. METHODS Data were collected from two rounds of the national representative Vietnam Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) conducted in 2013 (n = 3,331) and 2019 (n = 7,690). Logistic regression was used to identify the factors associated with tobacco and electronic cigarette smoking among in-school adolescents. RESULTS There was a significant reduction in the prevalence of current smoking (water pipes and cigarettes) from 5.4% (95% CI: 4.0-7.2) in 2013 to 2.8% (95% CI: 2.2-3.6) in 2019. In 2019, 2.6% of the in-school adolescents reported having used electronic cigarette products 30 days prior to the survey. Factors associated with a significantly higher likelihood of current smoking status included gender, loneliness, suicidal ideation, sexual activity, truancy, and alcohol consumption. Similar patterns were observed for e-cigarettes. CONCLUSION Smoking among in-school adolescents in Vietnam decreased between 2013 and 2019. Follow-up studies are needed to further investigate causal factors so that future policies and communication programmes can be more effectively targeted to reduce smoking in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Allergic rhinitis (AR) has become a tremendous disease burden worldwide. Only a few studies have explored the effects of environmental exposure on the prevalence of AR in children in China. METHODS In the present study, we investigated the associations of environmental exposure (including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), air humidity, temperature, and passive smoking) with AR in adolescents aged 10-13 years in Chongqing. Data from 4,146 participants in urban and rural areas between March 2019 and May 2019 were collected. RESULTS The overall prevalence of AR was 17.50% in adolescents. After adjusting for other covariates, AR was positively correlated with the annual mean PM2.5 concentration, monthly mean PM2.5 concentration and air temperature, and negatively related to air humidity. Furthermore, the annual mean PM2.5 was positively associated with the risk of AR after adjusting for air temperature and humidity. Passive smoking (PS) was marginally associated with a high risk of AR. CONCLUSION High PM2.5 exposure, high air temperature, and low air humidity were associated with a high risk of AR in adolescents. Our findings have potential implications for public health strategies and interventions aimed at reducing the burden of AR in adolescents.

Abstract
Passive smoking exposure in children is prevalent worldwide and exposes children to respiratory and systemic toxins. In this study, we enrolled 568 children to study how secondhand smoke (SHS) might affect children's cardiovascular health in China. The measurement of nicotine and its metabolites in urine showed that 78.9% of children were exposed to SHS. Children exposed to SHS had greater interventricular septum thickness (p = 0.005) and left ventricular mass index (p = 0.008) than nonexposed children. Urinary norcotinine levels were associated with increased ascending aorta diameter (β = 0.10, 95%CI 0.02-0.17) and decreased left ventricular end systolic diameter (β = -0.10, 95%CI -0.19 to -0.01). The effects of SHS exposure on cardiovascular function: norcotinine levels associated with lower left ventricular mass index (β = -0.32, 95%CI -0.59 to -0.05), left ventricular end diastolic volume index (β = -0.43, 95%CI -0.85 to -0.02), and left ventricular end systolic volume index (β = -0.20, 95%CI -0.37 to -0.03). Moreover, there no no significant associations of nicotine, cotinine, and trans-3'-hydroxycotinine with cardiovascular health. Overall, SHS exposure in children remains prevalent in Beijing and may affect children's cardiovascular development, in both structure and function. It suggests that stricter and practical measures are needed toward the elimination of tobacco use in children's environments.

Abstract
Without smoke-free legislation in Wuhan, China, we investigated secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure at home, school, and public places for never-smoking school-going adolescents in 2019. A cross-sectional study was carried out within the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) framework. Weighted univariate, bivariate and multivariable analyses were conducted. The prevalence of SHS exposure among never-smoking adolescents at home, school and public places was 25.7%, 31.9% and 48.9%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that parents smoking, peers smoking and observing teachers smoking in school were all significantly related to a higher probability of SHS exposure at home, school, and public places. Never-smoking adolescents who had smoking parents had 14 times (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 14.00; 95% confidence interval [CI], 11.37–17.24) higher odds of SHS exposure at home; Never-smoking adolescents who observed teachers smoking in school had about 10 (aOR = 9.76; 95% CI = 7.13–13.36) and four times (aOR = 3.55; 95% CI = 2.77–4.55) higher odds of SHS exposure in school and public places, respectively. Adopting comprehensive smoke-free legislation in public places and smoke-free home rules and implementing and supervising smoke-free school policies may further reduce SHS exposure among adolescents.

Abstract
Few studies have examined how exposure to substance influences adolescent's use of substance in Timor-Leste. We assessed this relationship using nationally representative data from Timor-Leste to address this gap. Data was pulled from the 2015 Timor-Leste Global school-based student health survey. Data of students aged 13-17years (N = 3700) from class 7-11 across schools in Timor-Leste were analyzed for this study. Second-hand smoking exposure (AOR = 1.57 [1.31, 1.89] and parental tobacco use, AOR = 1.94 [1.54, 2.44]) was significantly related to in-school adolescent's current use of substance after adjusting for covariates. Current substance use was also positively associated with being male, being in class 10-12, and being food insecure and negatively associated with having at least three close friends and benefiting from parental supervision. To reduce substance use among in-school adolescents, policymakers must consider the inclusion of all models in the social learning environment of adolescents in Timor-Leste.

Abstract
Ethiopia passed a law prohibiting tobacco smoking in all public places in 2019. We conducted a scoping review to identify gaps in the existing literature on second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure and smoke-free environments in Ethiopia that need to be prioritised for future research to support policy and practice. We conducted systematic searches in January 2022 in the following databases: Medline, EMBASE, and PsycInfo. Two reviewers independently screened the identified study reports for eligibility and extracted data from the eligible studies. The extracted data was descriptively analysed, and research recommendations were drawn. A stakeholder consultation workshop was held to identify research topics on SHS exposure and smoke-free environments in Ethiopia that they perceived to be priorities for primary research. Of the 388 research reports identified, only nine were included in the scoping review. The topics explored includes prevalence of SHS exposure (six studies); knowledge on SHS exposure (three studies); compliance to smoke-free environments legislation (two studies); and exposure to anti-smoking messages (one study). The stakeholders prioritised further research addressing compliance monitoring and enforcement of the smoke free laws in Ethiopia. There is a need for studies that test new methods for compliance monitoring and enforcement, evaluate strategies to increase knowledge on the harms of SHS exposure and the smoke-free legislation, and evaluate the current smoke-free legislation in Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVE To describe the prevalence of smoking indicators among Brazilian students according to sociodemographic characteristics in 2019, and compare the prevalence between 2015 and 2019. METHODS Data from the National Survey of School Health 2015 and 2019 were used. Indicators related to tobacco use were analyzed. Indicators were compared between the 2015 and 2019 editions. Prevalence and respective 95% Confidence Interval (95%IC) were calculated for the total population and according to sex, age group and type of school. RESULTS 22.6% (95%CI 21.7-23.4) of the students had tried any cigarette and it was higher between 16 and 17 years of age (32.6%; 95% CI 31.4-33, 8) and in males (35.0%; 95%CI 33.6-36.4). The experimentation of hookah, electronic cigarette and other tobacco products are also high, with 26.9% (95%CI 26.0-27.8), 16.8% (95%CI 16.2-17.4) and 9.3% (95%CI 8.8-9.8), respectively, being higher among boys aged 16 to 17 years. It is noteworthy that there were no changes in the indicators of cigarette experimentation, smoking for the first time before the age of 13, smoking in the 30 days prior to the survey, and at least one of the smoking parents. CONCLUSION Although smoked tobacco indicators are stable between 2015 and 2019, the high prevalence of experimentation with products such as hookah and electronic cigarettes is highlighted, drawing attention to the need for new regulatory measures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our study examined the prevalence and associated factors of tobacco product use and non-users' susceptibility to using tobacco products among school-going adolescents in 22 African countries. METHODS We analyzed the cross-sectional 2013-2018 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) data from 22 African countries. We conducted complex sampling descriptive and logistic regression analyses. RESULTS The overall prevalence of current use of any tobacco product among adolescents was 19.1%, with more males (23.7%) than females (13.7%) being current users. Zimbabwe and Morocco were the highest (47.1%) and least (12.6%) reported prevalence, respectively. Being male (AOR = 1.93;95%CI:1.61-2.32), being 16 and older(AOR = 1.37;95%CI:1.01-1.86), exposure to secondhand smoke within (AOR = 1.98;95%CI:1.69-2.32) and outside (AOR = 1.37;95%CI:1.13-1.65) the home, not knowledgeable about the harmful effect of secondhand smoke (AOR = 1.44;95%CI:1.20-1.74), exposure to tobacco industry promotion (AOR = 3.05;95%CI:2.68-3.47) and not in favour of banning smoking in enclosed places (AOR = 1.32;95%CI:1.08-1.60) were associated with current use of any tobacco product. The prevalence of the susceptibility to using tobacco products among never users of tobacco products was 12.2%, with no significant gender difference. Mozambique (24.6%) and Algeria (4.5%) had the highest and least prevalence of susceptibility to using tobacco products among never users, respectively. Exposure to tobacco industry promotion (AOR = 1.54;95%CI:1.31-1.82), those not in favour of banning smoking in enclosed places (AOR = 1.29;95%CI:1.14-1.45) and those not exposed to anti-smoking school education (AOR = 1.24;95%CI:1.06-1.46) were associated with susceptibility to using any tobacco product among never users of tobacco products. CONCLUSION Our study reports that tobacco use and non-user susceptibility to using tobacco products among school-going adolescents in the 22 African countries is high. As part of public health efforts, governments and other stakeholders need to fully implement anti-tobacco use campaigns, enforce a complete ban on tobacco promotion and advertising, institute educational programs for families, and anti-tobacco use education for the general public and in schools in line with WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control guidelines.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Smoking is more common among people with serious mental illness, and it contributes to a reduced life expectancy. Several Western countries have successfully introduced smoke-free policies in inpatient mental health units. There is virtually no information about attitudes to smoking bans in mental health units from countries in the Middle East and North Africa region. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: We surveyed mental health professionals working in Qatar's main mental health service to determine support for and attitudes towards a proposed total smoking ban in psychiatric wards. Most staff who completed the survey supported an inpatient smoking ban. However, further analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, showed markedly ambivalent attitudes, that is staff simultaneously held attitudes that supported and opposed a smoking ban. Professionals who did not support a ban were more likely to have not received smoking cessation training in the last 5 years, to be a psychiatrist rather than a nurse or allied mental health professional, to be current smokers and to be a Middle Eastern and North African national. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Further staff training is necessary to achieve more consistent attitudes that support a total smoking ban and increase the likelihood of successful implementation. The attitudes in this study showed similarities and differences to those reported for mental health professionals in Western countries. This highlights that local research is necessary to help shape training and successfully implement smoke-free policies. ABSTRACT: Introduction Despite the fact that patients with serious mental illness (SMI) have high rates of smoking and an increased standardized mortality, there is virtually no information about attitudes to smoking bans in mental health units from countries in the Middle East and North Africa region. Aim To assess support for, and attitudes towards, a proposed total smoking ban in psychiatric wards among mental health clinicians in Qatar. Method Cross-sectional survey of mental health professionals working in Qatar's primary mental health service. Results The response rate was 68% (353/520). Support for a ban was assessed with a single-item question; 73% of respondents supported a ban with opposition significantly (p < .05) associated with being a current smoker, a Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) national, a psychiatrist versus a mental health nurse or allied health professional and not receiving smoking cessation training in the last 5 years. A 21-item questionnaire assessed attitudes to a total smoking ban. It showed marked ambivalence with multiple linear regression identifying MENA nationality, male gender and current smoking status as independent variables influencing attitudes. The most strongly held attitude supporting a ban was concern about passive smoking and against a ban was concern it may increase patient agitation. Qualitative data confirmed ambivalent views. Discussion The results show similarities and differences to research from other countries suggesting that cultural factors influence some attitudes to smoke-free policies. Implications for Practice Staff support and smoking cessation education are necessary to achieve more consistent staff attitudes to support smoke-free policies.

Abstract
Analysis of the susceptibility to initiating tobacco use identifies youth at higher risk of initiating tobacco. Susceptibility to initiate tobacco use in increased in the United Arab Emirates while decreased in Bahrain and Qatar. FCTC may have an independent impact on initiating tobacco use among youth. The study helps policymakers identify impactful policies and prioritize resources accordingly.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) in 2006. Yet, GCC countries predict a slight reduction in tobacco use compared to the Eastern Mediterranean region’s significant downward trend. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in self-reported intention to initiating tobacco use (susceptibility) among youth over time in five GCC countries and the relationship between susceptibility and key FCTC provisions. Complex sample logistic regression analyses were conducted using data from the 2001 to 2018 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (n = 349,878 adolescents). Since the ratification of FCTC in GCC countries, susceptibility to initiate tobacco use significantly decreased in Bahrain and Qatar while it increased in UAE (P < 0.001). Exposure to smoking in public places increased the odds of susceptibility to tobacco use in Bahrain (AOR = 1.6, 95% CI = [1.2–2.2), Kuwait (AOR = 1.6, 95% CI = [1.2–2.0]), Qatar (AOR = 1.9, 95% CI = [1.4–2.6]), and UAE (AOR = 2.1, 95% CI = [1.6–2.7]). Susceptibility to tobacco use was significantly associated with exposure to tobacco imagery in media in the UAE (AOR = 1.7, 95% CI = [1.2–2.3]) and with tobacco industry activities like promotion in Bahrain (AOR = 2.8, 95% CI = [1.9–4.2]) and Kuwait (AOR = 2.2, 95% CI = [1.5–3.1]). In conclusion, the impact of FCTC provisions on tobacco use differs across countries. Findings suggested that the implementation of tobacco control policies may independently influence the initiation of tobacco use.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In Indonesia, smoking is widespread. The same applies to second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure. More than 90% of Indonesian smokers smoke clove cigarettes, so-called Kreteks. They often contain more tar and nicotine than conventional cigarettes, but little is known about particulate matter (PM) emissions. In smokers' homes, SHS is the main source of PM that is hazardous to health. This study presents data of PM emissions from Kreteks. METHODS SHS was generated in a closed 2.88 m³ measuring chamber. PM fractions (PM10, PM2.5, PM1) of three popular Kretek brands (two king-sized and one slim-sized) in comparison to conventional cigarettes and a reference cigarette were measured by laser aerosol spectroscopy in real-time. RESULTS The king-sized Kreteks reached PM10 and PM2.5 mean concentrations of up to about 3000 µg/m³, and PM1 mean concentrations of up to about 2700 µg/m³. Consequently, these Kreteks emitted up to about 100% more PM10 and PM2.5, respectively 84% more PM1 than the reference cigarette, and up to about 260% more PM10 and PM2.5, respectively 234% more PM1 than the other investigated cigarettes. CONCLUSIONS PM emissions from Kreteks can be very high. The Indonesian public should be informed and warned about it, considering the high prevalence of smoking and SHS exposure, in particular. The Indonesian tobacco control regulation is limited, and it is overdue to start with a serious and effective tobacco control policy. PM declaration to government authorities could be useful in smoking prevention and tobacco control. IMPLICATIONS Research data are limited for Kretek cigarettes, including data on particulate matter (PM). The clove buds in Kretek cigarettes are for flavoring the smoke and shall soften the smoke feeling. That makes them very popular in Indonesia, in particular. The declaration of PM data of Kreteks and other tobacco products can play a key role in a more effective tobacco policy to reduce consumption of tobacco products, not only in Indonesia. To provide data on PM emissions, this study ascertained PM amounts in passive smoke from Indonesian Kreteks.

Abstract
Understanding the factors that influence cigarette smoking among adolescents is critical. We identified personal, community, and environmental factors associated with current cigarette smoking among adolescents. This population-based cross-sectional analysis study was conducted using the 2012 Taiwan Global Youth Tobacco Survey and the sociodemographic statistics of the city or county from Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior. A total of 27,524 participants (age: 12–18-years) was included. The associated factors were identified through logistic regression. A path analysis was performed to examine the pathway from the associated factors to current cigarette smoking. According to this analysis, the following factors were prominently and positively associated with adolescent cigarette smoking: one personal factor (pocket money), five environmental factors (home secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, smoker friends, outside SHS exposure, school SHS exposure, and smoker parents), and two community factors (free cigarettes from tobacco companies and indigenous population). By contrast, five personal factors (feeling less comfortable smoking at social occasions, feeling indifferent about smoking or not smoking at social occasions, female sex, feeling that quitting is difficult, and feeling that quitting after having smoked is harmful to health) and one environmental factor (school antismoking education) had negative effects. Thus, comprehensive interventions promoting the perception of harm caused by smoking and interrupting access to cigarettes through social networks can reduce cigarette smoking in adolescents.

Abstract
Background: Smokeless tobacco (ST) use is common among youth in South Asia where 85% of the world’s 300 million ST users live and use the most lethal ST forms. Little is known about the impact of tobacco control policies on the youth ST uptake in those countries. We planned to conduct longitudinal surveys among school going adolescents to evaluate existing tobacco control policies on tobacco uptake and use, and a feasibility study for that prospective, observational cohort study. Study objectives: (1) To demonstrate the feasibility of selection, recruitment and retention of schools and of study participants; (2) To assess the feasibility and acceptability of the study procedure and study tool (questionnaire); (3) To evaluate if the questionnaire can assess tobacco uptake and use, and their potential predictors. Methods and analysis: The feasibility study will be conducted in two administrative areas within each of three South Asian countries: Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. We will use both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Eight eligible schools will be randomly selected within purposively selected sub-districts from each country. We plan to conduct one baseline and one follow up survey among students of grade 6-8, one year apart. At each time point, data on tobacco uptake and potential predictors will be collected from students via self-administered questionnaires that were designed for the longitudinal study. The qualitative component will be embedded into the study with each round of data collection to assess the acceptability of the study instrument (questionnaire) and data collection methods, via focus group discussions with students and semi-structured interviews with schoolteachers. Recruitment and retention rates, completeness of the questionnaires, frequencies and associations of tobacco use and explanatory variables will be reported. Data gathered from the focus group and interviews will be analysed using the framework approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco use, secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and household solid fuel use in women of reproductive age can cause morbidity and mortality for both women and offspring. OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine the prevalence of tobacco use, SHS exposure at home and household solid fuel use among women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and their secular trends between 2000 and 2018. METHODS We used the most recent data from the Demographic and Health Surveys in 57 LMICs (n = 1,598,111) that were completed between 2010 and 2018 to assess the prevalence of tobacco use, SHS exposure at home and household solid fuel use among women of reproductive age (15-49 years). We also used data from 41 selected LMICs that had data from two or more surveys completed between 2000 and 2018 to assess secular trends in the prevalence of tobacco use and household solid fuel use among women. RESULTS In 2010-2018, the overall prevalence of tobacco use, daily SHS exposure at home and household solid fuel use among women in 57 LMICs was 3.2% (95 %CI = 3.1-3.3), 23.0% (22.8-23.2), and 65.6% (65.3-65.9), respectively. The prevalence of tobacco use was lower among pregnant women than non-pregnant women (2.1% vs. 3.3%), but the prevalence of daily SHS exposure at home (24.4% vs. 22.8%) and household solid fuel use (69.1% vs. 65.3%) was higher among pregnant women than non-pregnant women. About 16% of the women presented two or three simultaneous risk factors. Between 2000 and 2018, the prevalence of tobacco use decreased in 24 (64.9%) of 37 countries, and the prevalence of household solid fuel use decreased in 20 (50.0%) of 40 countries. CONCLUSIONS Tobacco use among women was much low in LMICs, but SHS exposure at home was more common. Although the prevalence of household solid fuel use decreased over time in most LMICs, these recent estimates remained unacceptably high.
