Biogeochemical redox processes and their impact on contaminant dynamics

Iron coupled with hydroxylamine turns on the "switch" for free radical degradation of organic pollutants under high pH conditions

Reducing iron by hydroxylamine (HA) can promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the Fenton reaction and play a crucial role in the degradation of organic pollutants. However, the performance of this system at wider environmental thresholds is still not sufficiently understood, especially in the highly alkaline environments resulting from human activities. Here, we assessed the impact of solution pH on organic pollutant degradation by goethite with the addition of HA and H2O2. The solid phase variation and ROS generation were analyzed using Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. This study found that under alkaline conditions, the system can continuously scavenge organic pollutants through oxygen-mediated generation of free radicals. At lower pH levels, organic pollutant decomposition, exemplified by the breakdown of bisphenol A (BPA), is primarily driven by the Fenton reaction facilitated by iron. As pH increases, hydroxyl radical (•OH) production decreases, accompanied by decreased BPA removal efficiency. However, the removal efficiency of BPA increased significantly at pH > 9. At pH 12, the removal of BPA exceeded that of the acidic condition after one hour, which is consistent with observations in soil system studies. Unlike the Fenton reaction, which is not sensitive to oxygen content, the removal of BPA under alkaline conditions occurs only under aerobic conditions. H2O2 is hardly involved in the reaction, and the depletion of HA becomes a critical factor in the decomposition of BPA. Importantly, in contrast to acidic conditions, where the dramatic decomposition of BPA occurs mainly in the first 10 min, the decomposition of BPA under alkaline conditions continued to occur over the 2 h of observation until complete removal. For natural systems, the remediation of pollutants depends more on the active time of ROS than on their reactivity. Therefore, this idea can reference pollution remediation strategies in anthropogenically disturbed environments.

Integrating HYDRUS-2D and Bayesian Networks for simulating long-term sludge land application: Uncovering heavy metal mobility and pollution risk in the soil-groundwater environment

The release of sludge-derived heavy metals (HMs) to soil and their subsequent migration into groundwater poses a significant challenge for safe and low-carbon sludge land application. This study developed a predictive framework to simulate 60-year sludge land application, evaluating the risk of HMs pollution in the soil-groundwater environment and assessing the influence of soil and water properties. HYDRUS-2D simulations revealed that highly mobile Cu, Ni, and Zn penetrated a 10 m soil layer over a 60-year period, contributing to groundwater pollution. In contrast, Cr was easily sequestered within the topsoil layer after 5-years continuous operation. The non-equilibrium parameter α could serve as an indicator for assessing their potential risk. Furthermore, the limited soil adsorption sites for Pb (f = 0.02772) led to short-term (1-year) groundwater pollution at a 0.5 m-depth. Bayesian Networks model outcomes indicated that humic-like organics crucially influenced HMs transformation, enhancing the desorption of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn, while inhibiting the desorption for Cr. Additionally, electrical conductivity promoted the release of most HMs, in contrast to the Mn mineralogy in soil. This study bridges the gap between the macro-level HMs migration trends and the micro-level adsorption-desorption characteristics, providing guidance for the safe land application of sewage sludge. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: This study introduces a framework integrating HYDRUS-2D simulations with Bayesian Networks to assess the risks of groundwater pollution by heavy metals (HMs) over a 60-year sludge application. Sludge-derived Cu, Ni, and Zn are found to penetrate soil up to 10 m and exceed safety limits, with the non-equilibrium parameter α serving as an indicator for pollution risk. The importance of nutrients from sludge-amended soil for the transformation of HMs in the subsurface environment highlights the need for enhanced sludge management, specifically through more detailed regulation of nutrient composition. These findings contribute to developing precise strategies for the long-term sludge land application.

Determination of contamination sources and geochemical reactions in groundwater of a mine area using Cu, Zn, and S-O isotopes

To determine contamination sources and pathways, the use of multiple isotopes, including metal isotopes, can increase the reliability of environmental forensic techniques. This study differentiated contamination sources in groundwater of a mine area and elucidated geochemical processes using Cu, Zn, S-O, and O-H isotopes. Sulfate reduction and sulfide precipitation were elucidated using concentrations of dissolved sulfides, δ34SSO4, δ18OSO4, and δ66Zn. The overlying contaminated soil was possibly responsible for the contamination of groundwater at <5 mbgl, which was suggested by low δ65Cu values (0.419-1.120‰) reflecting those of soil (0.279-1.115‰). The existence of dissolved Cu as Cu(I) may prevent the increase in δ65Cu during leaching of contaminated soil in the sulfate-reducing environment. In contrast, the groundwater at >5 mbgl seemed to be highly affected by the contamination plume from the adit water, which was suggested by high SO42- concentrations (407-447 mg L-1) and δ65Cu (0.252-2.275‰) and δ66Zn (-0.105‰-0.362‰) values at a multilevel sampler approaching those of the adit seepages. Additionally, the O-H isotopic ratios were distinguished between <5 mbgl and >5 mbgl. Using δ65Cu and δ66Zn to support the determination of groundwater contamination sources may be encouraged, particularly where the isotopic signatures are distinct for each source.

Differential responses of the electron transfer capacities of soil humic acid and fulvic acid to long-term wastewater irrigation

Wastewater irrigation is used to supplement agricultural irrigation because of its benefits and freshwater resource scarcity. However, whether wastewater irrigation for many years affects the electron transfer capacity (ETC) of natural organic matter in soil remains unclear, and organic matter could influence the decomposition and mineralization of substances with redox characteristics in soil through electron transfer, ultimately affecting the soil environment. The composition of soil humic substances (HS) is highly complex, and the effects of soil humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) on ETC is poorly understood. In this study, we separately evaluated the responses of the electron-accepting capacity (EAC) and electron-donating capacity (EDC) of soil HA and FA in agricultural fields to various durations of wastewater irrigation. Results showed that the EAC of HA and FA increased significantly with increasing the duration of wastewater irrigation. When wastewater irrigation lasted for 56 years, the EAC of HA showed a higher increment (590 %) than that of FA (223 %). The EDC of soil HA and FA, conversely, decreased compared to the control, with the highest reduction of 35.6 % for HA and 65.9 % for FA. Specifically, the EDC of HA gradually decreased starting from 29 years of wastewater irrigation, whereas the decrease in the EDC of FA exhibited no clear pattern in relation to the duration of wastewater irrigation. Increased soil organic matter and total nitrogen content under long-term wastewater irrigation led to an increase in sucrase and phosphatase activities, along with an increase in EAC and a decrease in EDC of HS. This suggests that soil enzyme activities may ultimately lead to changes in ETC. The results of this research provide practical insights into the redox system in soil and its driving role in soil organic matter transformation and nutrient cycling under wastewater irrigation.

Electrogenic sulfur oxidation mediated by cable bacteria and its ecological effects

At the sediment-water interfaces, filamentous cable bacteria transport electrons from sulfide oxidation along their filaments towards oxygen or nitrate as electron acceptors. These multicellular bacteria belonging to the family Desulfobulbaceae thus form a biogeobattery that mediates redox processes between multiple elements. Cable bacteria were first reported in 2012. In the past years, cable bacteria have been found to be widely distributed across the globe. Their potential in shaping the surface water environments has been extensively studied but is not fully elucidated. In this review, the biogeochemical characteristics, conduction mechanisms, and geographical distribution of cable bacteria, as well as their ecological effects, are systematically reviewed and discussed. Novel insights for understanding and applying the role of cable bacteria in aquatic ecology are summarized.

Emerging contaminants: A One Health perspective

Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

The potential of ferrihydrite-synthetic humic-like acid composite as a soil amendment for metal-contaminated agricultural soil: Immobilization mechanisms by combining abiotic and biotic perspectives

In-situ passivation technique has attracted increasing attention for metal-contaminated agricultural soil remediation. However, metal immobilization mechanisms are mostly illustrated based on metal speciation changes and alterations in soil physicochemical properties from a macroscopic and abiotic perspective. In this study, a ferrihydrite-synthetic humic-like acid composite (FH-SHLA) was fabricated and applied as a passivator for a 90-day soil incubation. The heavy metals immobilization mechanisms of FH-SHLA were investigated by combining both abiotic and biotic perspectives. Effects of FH-SHLA application on soil micro-ecology were also evaluated. The results showed that the 5%FH-SHLA treatment significantly decreased the DTPA-extractable Pb, Cd and Zn by 80.75%, 46.82% and 63.63% after 90 days of incubation (P < 0.05), respectively. Besides, 5% FH-SHLA addition significantly increased soil pH, soil organic matter content and cation exchange capacity (P < 0.05). The SEM, FTIR, and XPS characterizations revealed that the abiotic metal immobilization mechanisms by FH-SHLA included surface complexation, precipitation, electrostatic attraction, and cation-π interactions. For biotic perspective, in-situ microorganisms synergistically participated in the immobilization process via sulfide precipitation and Fe mineral production. FH-SHLA significantly altered the diversity and composition of the soil microbial community, and enhanced the intensity and complexity of the microbial co-occurrence network. Both metal bioavailability and soil physiochemical parameters played a vital role in shaping microbial communities, while the former contributed more. Overall, this study provides new insight into the heavy metal passivation mechanism and demonstrates that FH-SHLA is a promising and environmentally friendly amendment for metal-contaminated soil remediation.

Longevity and efficacy of lanthanum-based P remediation under changing dissolved oxygen availability in a small eutrophic lake

We set out to study the seasonal variations in porewater phosphorus and lanthanum concentrations in the dated sediment cores from a small eutrophic lake that has been treated with Phoslock, a lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) amendment. Three sites were sampled when the hypolimnion was either oxygenated or anoxic: (i) the lake's deepest point, (ii) a littoral site receiving inflows from the catchment, and (iii) a littoral site influenced by nearby septic tanks. Phosphate (PO43--P), lanthanum (La), iron (Fe), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and sulfate (SO42-) were measured in porewater samples. An inverse diagenetic model was used to quantify fluxes of dissolved elements across the sediment-water interface as well as the net rate of their reactions along the porewater concentration gradients. Results show that porewater P and Fe underwent strong seasonal dynamics, while La did not. P fluxes, 20-fold higher at the deepest site than elsewhere in the basin, were influenced by anoxic conditions in the hypolimnion during summer and winter, suggesting that P mobility remained sensitive to redox fluctuations despite the addition of La. At the deepest site, fluxes of P across the sediment-water interface increased from 1 to 9 × 10-9 μmol cm-2 s-1 between spring and summer, while the rate of P production to the porewater also increased a hundredfold. These increases were concurrent with Fe mobilization. Finally, sediment dating shows that the fraction of P sequestered by La is buried under freshly deposited sediment at a rate of 2-3 mm per year. These results indicate that external P fluxes and erosion control remain crucial to maintain the longevity of the LMB treatment.

Anaerobic oxidation of methane in landfill and adjacent groundwater environments: Occurrence, mechanisms, and potential applications

Landfills remain the predominant means of solid waste management worldwide. Widespread distribution and significant stockpiles of waste in landfills make them a significant source of methane emissions, exacerbating climate change. Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) has been shown to play a critical role in mitigating methane emissions on a global scale. The rich methane and electron acceptor environment in landfills provide the necessary reaction conditions for AOM, making it a potentially low-cost and effective strategy for reducing methane emissions in landfills. However, compared to other anaerobic habitats, research on AOM in landfill environments is scarce, and there is a lack of analysis on the potential application of AOM in different zones of landfills. Therefore, this review summarizes the existing knowledge on AOM and its occurrence in landfills, analyzes the possibility of AOM occurrence in different zones of landfills, discusses its potential applications, and explores the challenges and future research directions for AOM in landfill management. The identification of research gaps and future directions outlined in this review encourages further investigation and advancement in the field of AOM, paving the way for more effective waste stabilization, greenhouse gas reduction, and pollutant mitigation strategies in landfills.

Abiotic Methane Production Driven by Ubiquitous Non-Fenton-Type Reactive Oxygen Species

Abiotic CH4 production driven by Fenton-type reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been confirmed to be an indispensable component of the atmospheric CH4 budget. While the chemical reactions independent of Fenton chemistry to ROS are ubiquitous in nature, it remains unknown whether the produced ROS can drive abiotic CH4 production. Here, we first demonstrated the abiotic CH4 production at the soil-water interface under illumination. Leveraging this finding, polymeric carbon nitrides (CNx) as a typical analogue of natural geobattery material and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a natural methyl donor were used to unravel the underlying mechanisms. We revealed that the ROS, photocatalytically produced by CNx, can oxidize DMSO into CH4 with a high selectivity of 91.5 %. Such an abiotic CH4 production process was further expanded to various non-Fenton-type reaction systems, such as electrocatalysis, pyrocatalysis and sonocatalysis. This work provides insights into the geochemical cycle of abiotic CH4, and offers a new route to CH4 production via integrated energy development.

Influence of Iron Substitution and Solution Composition on Brucite Carbonation

Carbon neutral or negative mining can potentially be achieved by integrating carbon mineralization processes into the mine design, operations, and closure plans. Brucite [Mg(OH)2] is a highly reactive mineral present in some ultramafic mine tailings with the potential to be rapidly carbonated and can contain significant amounts of ferrous iron [Fe(II)] substituted for Mg; however, the influence of this substitution on carbon mineralization reaction products and efficiency has not been thoroughly constrained. To better assess the efficiency of carbon storage in brucite-bearing tailings, we performed carbonation experiments using synthetic Fe(II)-substituted brucite (0, 6, 23, and 44 mol % Fe) slurries in oxic and anoxic conditions with 10% CO2. Additionally, the carbonation process was evaluated using different background electrolytes (NaCl, Na2SO4, and Na4SiO4). Our results indicate that carbonation efficiency decreases with increasing Fe(II) substitution. In oxic conditions, precipitation of ferrihydrite [Fe10IIIO14(OH)2] and layered double hydroxides {e.g., pyroaurite [Mg6Fe2III(OH)16CO3·4H2O]} limited carbonation efficiency. Carbonation in anoxic environments led to the formation of Fe(II)-substituted nesquehonite (MgCO3·3H2O) and dypingite [Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·∼5H2O], as well as chukanovite [Fe2IICO3(OH)2] in the case of 23 and 44 mol % Fe(II)-brucite carbonation. Carbonation efficiencies were consistent between chloride- and sulfate-rich solutions but declined in the presence of dissolved Si due to the formation of amorphous SiO2·nH2O and Fe-Mg silicates. Overall, our results indicate that carbonation efficiency and the long-term fate of stored CO2 may depend on the amount of substituted Fe(II) in both feedstock minerals and carbonate products.

Microbially Induced Soil Colloidal Phosphorus Mobilization Under Anoxic Conditions

Understanding the behavior of colloidal phosphorus (Pcoll) under anoxic conditions is pivotal for addressing soil phosphorus (P) mobilization and transport and its impact on nutrient cycling. Our study investigated Pcoll dynamics in acidic floodplain soil during a 30-day flooding event. The sudden oxic-to-anoxic shift led to a significant rise in pore-water Pcoll levels, which exceeded soluble P levels by more than 2.7-fold. Colloidal fractions transitioned from dispersed forms (<220 nm) to colloid-associated microaggregates (>220 nm), as confirmed by electron microscopy. The observed increase in colloidal sizes was paralleled by their heightened ability to form aggregates. Compared to sterile control conditions, anoxia prompted the transformation of initially dispersed colloids into larger particles through microbial activity. Curiously, the 16S rRNA and ITS microbial diversity analysis indicated that fungi were more strongly associated with anoxia-induced colloidal release than bacteria. These microbially induced shifts in Pcoll lead to its higher mobility and transport, with direct implications for P release from soil into floodwaters.

Structural Rearrangement Followed by Entrapment of Subnanometer Building Blocks of Iron Oxyhydroxide in Aqueous Iron Chloride Solutions

Iron oxyhydroxide, a natural nanophase of iron found in the environment, plays a crucial role in regulating surface and groundwater composition. Recent research proposes that within the nonclassical prenucleation cluster growth model, subnanometer-sized clusters (olation clusters/Fe13 δ-Keggin oxolation clusters) might act as the prenucleation clusters (PNCs) of ferrihydrite or iron oxyhydroxide solid phase. However, these clusters are difficult to characterize as they are only observable momentarily in low-pH, high-Fe concentration solutions before agglomerating into extended solids, keeping the controversy over the true nature of the PNCs alive. In this study, we introduce large quantities of zinc acetate salt (ZA) into iron chloride solutions at the olation-oxolation boundary (3.6 mM Fe3+ at pH ∼2.6). Remarkably, this manipulation is found to alter the structural arrangement of these subnanometer clusters before blocking them in isolation for hours, even at pH 6, where extended iron oxyhydroxide phases typically precipitate. On the other hand, controlled addition of ZA allows partial unblocking, leading to anisotropic agglomeration into cylindrical rod-like structures. Experimental techniques such as synchrotron-based small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and cryo-TEM, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, reveal the nature of the structural rearrangement and the crucial role of Zn2+ ions in cluster stabilization.

A Critical Look at Colloid Generation, Stability, and Transport in Redox-Dynamic Environments: Challenges and Perspectives

Colloid generation, stability, and transport are important processes that can significantly influence the fate and transport of nutrients and contaminants in environmental systems. Here, we critically review the existing literature on colloids in redox-dynamic environments and summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the mechanisms of colloid generation and the chemical controls over colloidal behavior in such environments. We also identify critical gaps, such as the lack of universally accepted cross-discipline definition and modeling infrastructure that hamper an in-depth understanding of colloid generation, behavior, and transport potential. We propose to go beyond a size-based operational definition of colloids and consider the functional differences between colloids and dissolved species. We argue that to predict colloidal transport in redox-dynamic environments, more empirical data are needed to parametrize and validate models. We propose that colloids are critical components of element budgets in redox-dynamic systems and must urgently be considered in field as well as lab experiments and reactive transport models. We intend to bring further clarity and openness in reporting colloidal measurements and fate to improve consistency. Additionally, we suggest a methodological toolbox for examining impacts of redox dynamics on colloids in field and lab experiments.

Enhancing soil redox dynamics: Comparative effects of Fe-modified biochar (N-Fe and S-Fe) on Fe oxide transformation and Cd immobilization

Biochar and modified biochar have gained wide attention for Cd-contaminated soil remediation. This study investigates the effects of rape straw biochar (RSB), sulfur-iron modified biochar (S-FeBC), and nitrogen-iron modified biochar (N-FeBC) on soil Fe oxide transformation and Cd immobilization. The mediated electrochemical analysis results showed that Fe modification effectively enhanced the electron exchange capacity (EEC) of biochar. After 40 days of anaerobic incubation, compared to the treatment without biochar (CK), the concentrations of CaCl2-extractable Cd in N-FeBC, S-FeBC, and RSB treatments decreased by 79%, 53%, and 23%, respectively. Compared with S-FeBC, N-FeBC significantly decreased the soil Eh and increased soil pH within the first 15 days, which could be attributed to its higher EEC and alkalinity. There is a negative correlation between the concentration of CaCl2-extractable Cd and soil pH (p < 0.01). The sequential extraction results showed that both N-FeBC and S-FeBC promoted Cd transfer from acid-soluble to Fe/Mn oxides bound fraction (Fe/Mn-Cd). N-FeBC significantly increased the concentration of amorphous Fe oxides (amFeox) from 4.0 g kg-1 in day 1 to 4.6 g kg-1 in day 15 by promoting the NO3--reducing Fe(II) oxidation process, while S-FeBC significantly increased amFeox from 4.0 g kg-1 in day 15 to 4.8 g kg-1 in day 40 by promoting the Fe(II) recrystallization. There is a positive correlation between the concentration of amFeox and Fe/Mn-Cd (p < 0.01). The scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that Cd was bound to the amFeox coating on the surface of Fe-modified biochar. By acting as an electron shuttle, the active surface of Fe-modified biochar may serve as a hotspot for Fe transformation, which promotes amFeox formation and Cd immobilization. This study highlights the potential of Fe-modified biochar for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soils and provides valuable insights into the development of effective remediation approaches for Cd-contaminated soils.

Managing the remediation strategy of contaminated megasites using field-scale calibration of geo-electrical imaging with chemical monitoring

Groundwater contamination is a threat to drinking water resources and ecosystems. Remediation by injection of chemical reagents into the aquifer may be preferred to excavation to reduce cost and environmental footprint. Yet, successful remediation requires complete contact between contamination and reagents. Subsurface heterogeneities are often responsible for diffusion into low-permeable zones, which may inhibit this contact. Monitoring the spatial distribution of injected reagents over time is crucial to achieve complete interaction. Source zone contamination at megasites is particularly challenging to remediate and monitor due to the massive scale and mixture of contaminants. Source zone remediation at Kærgård Plantation megasite (Denmark) is monitored here, with a new methodology, using high-resolution cross-borehole electrical resistivity tomography (XB-ERT) imaging calibrated by chemical analyses on groundwater samples. At this site, high levels of toxic non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) are targeted by in-situ chemical oxidation using activated persulfate. It may take numerous injection points with extensive injection campaigns to distribute reagents, which requires an understanding of how reagent may transport within the aquifer. A geophysical (XB-ERT) monitoring network of unprecedented size was installed to identify untreated zones and help manage the remediation strategy. The combination of spatially continuous geophysical information with discrete but precise chemical information, allowed detailed monitoring of sulfate distribution, produced during persulfate activation. Untreated zones identified in the first remediation campaign were resolved in the second campaign. The monitoring allowed adjusting the number of injection screens and the injection strategy from one campaign to the next, which resulted in better persulfate distribution and contaminant degradation in the second campaign. Furthermore, geophysical transects repeated over the timespan of a remediation campaign allowed high-resolution time-lapse imaging of reagent transport, which could in the future improve the predictability of transport models, compared to only using on a-priori assumptions of the hydraulic conductivity field.

The interplay between microbial communities and soil properties

In recent years, there has been considerable progress in determining the soil properties that influence the structure of the soil microbiome. By contrast, the effects of microorganisms on their soil habitat have received less attention with most previous studies focusing on microbial contributions to soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics. However, soil microorganisms are not only involved in nutrient cycling and organic matter transformations but also alter the soil habitat through various biochemical and biophysical mechanisms. Such microbially mediated modifications of soil properties can have local impacts on microbiome assembly with pronounced ecological ramifications. In this Review, we describe the processes by which microorganisms modify the soil environment, considering soil physics, hydrology and chemistry. We explore how microorganism-soil interactions can generate feedback loops and discuss how microbially mediated modifications of soil properties can serve as an alternative avenue for the management and manipulation of microbiomes to combat soil threats and global change.

Iron-modified biochar inhibiting Cd uptake in rice by Cd co-deposition with Fe oxides in the rice rhizosphere

Fe-enriched biochar has proven to be effective in reducing Cd uptake in rice plants by enhancing iron plaque formation. However, the effect of Fe on biochar, especially the biochar with high S content, for Cd immobilization in rice rhizosphere was not fully understood. To obtain eco-friendly Fe-loaded biochar at a low cost, garlic straw, bean straw, and rape straw were chosen as the feedstocks for Fe-enhanced biochar production by co-pyrolysis with Fe2O3. The resulting biochars and Fe-loaded biochars were GBC, BBC, BRE, GBC-Fe, BBC-Fe, and BRE-Fe, respectively. XRD and FTIR analyses showed that Fe was successfully loaded onto the biochar. The pristine and Fe-containing biochars were applied at rates of 0% (BC0) and 0.1% in pot experiments. Results suggested that BBC-Fe caused the highest reduction in Cd content of rice grain, and the reductions were 67.9% and 31.4%, compared with BC0 and BBC, respectively. Compared to BBC, BBC-Fe effectively reduced Cd uptake in rice roots by 47.5%. The exchangeable and acid-soluble fraction of Cd (F1-Cd) in soil with BBC-Fe treatment was 37.6% and 63.7% lower than that of BC0 and BBC, respectively. Compared to BC0, soil pH was increased by 0.53 units with BBC-Fe treatment. BBC-Fe significantly increased Fe oxides (free Fe oxides, amorphous Fe oxides, and complex Fe oxides) content in the soil as well. DGT study demonstrated that BBC-Fe could enhance the mobility of sulfate in the rhizosphere, which might be beneficial for Cd fixation in the rhizosphere. Moreover, BBC-Fe increased the relative abundance of Bacteroidota, Firmicutes, and Clostridia, which might be beneficial for Cd immobilization in the rhizosphere. This work highlights the synergistic effect of loaded Fe and biochar on Cd immobilization by enhancing Cd deposited with Fe oxides.

Effects of zero-valent iron added in the flooding or drainage process on cadmium immobilization in an acid paddy soil

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) is a promising material for the remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy soils. However, the effects of ZVI added during flooding or drainage processes on cadmium (Cd) retention remain unclear. Herein, Cd-contaminated paddy soil was incubated for 40 days of flooding and then for 15 days of drainage, and the underlying mechanisms of Cd immobilization coupled with Fe/S/N redox processes were investigated. The addition of ZVI to the flooding process was more conducive to Cd immobilization. Less potential available Cd was detected by adding ZVI before flooding, which may be due to the increase in paddy soil pH and newly formed secondary Fe minerals. Moreover, the reductive dissolution of Fe minerals promoted the release of soil colloids, thereby increasing significantly the surface sites and causing Cd immobilization. Additionally, the addition of ZVI before flooding played a vital role in Cd retention after soil drainage. In contrast, the addition of ZVI in the drainage phase was not conducive to Cd retention, which might be due to the rapid decrease in soil pH that inhibited Cd adsorption and further immobilization on soil surfaces. The findings of this study demonstrated that Cd availability in paddy soil was largely reduced by adding ZVI during the flooding period and provide a novel insight into the mechanisms of ZVI remediation in Cd-contaminated paddy soils.

Elucidating phosphorus removal dynamics in a denitrifying woodchip bioreactor

Denitrifying woodchip bioreactors (DBRs) are an established nitrate mitigation technology, but uncertainty remains on their viability for phosphorus (P) removal due to inconsistent source-sink behaviour in field trials. We investigated whether iron (Fe) redox cycling could be the missing link needed to explain P dynamics in these systems. A pilot-scale DBR (Aotearoa New Zealand) was monitored for the first two drainage seasons (2017-2018), with supplemental in-field measurements of reduced solutes (Fe2+, HS-/H2S) and their conjugate oxidised species (Fe3+/SO42-) made in 2021 to constrain within-reactor redox gradients. Consistent with thermodynamics, the dissolution of Fe3+(s) to Fe2+(aq) within the DBR sequentially followed O2, NO3- and MnO2(s) reduction, but occurred before SO42- reduction. Monitoring of inlet and outlet chemistry revealed tight coupling between Fe and P (inlet R2 0.94, outlet R2 0.85), but distinct dynamics between drainage seasons. In season one, outlet P exceeded inlet P (net P source), and coincided with elevated outlet Fe2+, but at ⁓50 % lower P concentrations relative to inlet Fe:P ratios. In season 2 the reactor became a net P sink, coinciding with declining outlet Fe2+ concentrations (indicating exhaustion of Fe3+(s) hydroxides and associated P). In order to characterize P removal under varying source dynamics (i.e. inflows vs in-situ P releases), we used the inlet Fe vs P relationship to estimate P binding to colloidal Fe (hydr)oxide surfaces under oxic conditions, and the outlet Fe2+ concentration to estimate in-situ P releases associated with Fe (hydr)oxide reduction. Inferred P-removal rates were highest early in season 1 (k = 0.60 g P m3 d-1; 75-100 % removal), declining significantly thereafter (k = 0.01 ± 0.02 g P m3 d-1; ca. 3-67 % removal). These calculations suggest that microbiological P removal in DBRs can occur at comparable magnitudes to nitrate removal by denitrification, depending mainly on P availability and hydraulic retention efficiency.

Metal-oxide precipitation influences microbiome structure in hyporheic zones receiving acid rock drainage

Streams impacted by historic mining activity are characterized by acidic pH, unique microbial communities, and abundant metal-oxide precipitation, all of which can influence groundwater-surface water exchange. We investigate how metal-oxide precipitates and hyporheic mixing mediate the composition of microbial communities in two streams receiving acid-rock and mine drainage near Silverton, Colorado, USA. A large, neutral pH hyporheic zone facilitated the precipitation of metal particles/colloids in hyporheic porewaters. A small, low pH hyporheic zone, limited by the presence of a low-permeability, iron-oxyhydroxide layer known as ferricrete, led to the formation of steep geochemical gradients and high dissolved-metal concentrations. To determine how these two hyporheic systems influence microbiome composition, we installed well clusters and deployed in situ microcosms in each stream to sample porewaters and sediments for 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results indicated that distinct hydrogeochemical conditions were present above and below the ferricrete in the low pH system. A positive feedback loop may be present in the low pH stream where microbially mediated precipitation of iron-oxides contributes to additional clogging of hyporheic pore spaces, separating abundant, iron-oxidizing bacteria (Gallionella spp.) above the ferricrete from rare, low-abundance bacteria below the ferricrete. Metal precipitates and colloids that formed in the neutral pH hyporheic zone were associated with a more diverse phylogenetic community of nonmotile, nutrient-cycling bacteria that may be transported through hyporheic pore spaces. In summary, biogeochemical conditions influence, and are influenced by, hyporheic mixing, which mediates the distribution of micro-organisms and, thus, the cycling of metals in streams receiving acid-rock and mine drainage.

IMPORTANCE

In streams receiving acid-rock and mine drainage, the abundant precipitation of iron minerals can alter how groundwater and surface water mix along streams (in what is known as the "hyporheic zone") and may shape the distribution of microbial communities. The findings presented here suggest that neutral pH streams with large, well-mixed hyporheic zones may harbor and transport diverse microorganisms attached to particles/colloids through hyporheic pore spaces. In acidic streams where metal oxides clog pore spaces and limit hyporheic exchange, iron-oxidizing bacteria may dominate and phylogenetic diversity becomes low. The abundance of iron-oxidizing bacteria in acid mine drainage streams has the potential to contribute to additional clogging of hyporheic pore spaces and the accumulation of toxic metals in the hyporheic zone. This research highlights the dynamic interplay between hydrology, geochemistry, and microbiology at the groundwater-surface water interface of acid mine drainage streams.

Predicting Redox Conditions in Groundwater at a National Scale Using Random Forest Classification

Redox conditions in groundwater may markedly affect the fate and transport of nutrients, volatile organic compounds, and trace metals, with significant implications for human health. While many local assessments of redox conditions have been made, the spatial variability of redox reaction rates makes the determination of redox conditions at regional or national scales problematic. In this study, redox conditions in groundwater were predicted for the contiguous United States using random forest classification by relating measured water quality data from over 30,000 wells to natural and anthropogenic factors. The model correctly predicted the oxic/suboxic classification for 78 and 79% of the samples in the out-of-bag and hold-out data sets, respectively. Variables describing geology, hydrology, soil properties, and hydrologic position were among the most important factors affecting the likelihood of oxic conditions in groundwater. Important model variables tended to relate to aquifer recharge, groundwater travel time, or prevalence of electron donors, which are key drivers of redox conditions in groundwater. Partial dependence plots suggested that the likelihood of oxic conditions in groundwater decreased sharply as streams were approached and gradually as the depth below the water table increased. The probability of oxic groundwater increased as base flow index values increased, likely due to the prevalence of well-drained soils and geologic materials in high base flow index areas. The likelihood of oxic conditions increased as topographic wetness index (TWI) values decreased. High topographic wetness index values occur in areas with a propensity for standing water and overland flow, conditions that limit the delivery of dissolved oxygen to groundwater by recharge; higher TWI values also tend to occur in discharge areas, which may contain groundwater with long travel times. A second model was developed to predict the probability of elevated manganese (Mn) concentrations in groundwater (i.e., ≥50 μg/L). The Mn model relied on many of the same variables as the oxic/suboxic model and may be used to identify areas where Mn-reducing conditions occur and where there is an increased risk to domestic water supplies due to high Mn concentrations. Model predictions of redox conditions in groundwater produced in this study may help identify regions of the country with elevated groundwater vulnerability and stream vulnerability to groundwater-derived contaminants.

Co-exposure of microplastics and polychlorinated biphenyls strongly influenced the cycling processes of typical biogenic elements in anoxic soil

The co-exposure of microplastics (MPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil is inevitable, but their combined effect on cycles of typical biogenic elements (e.g. C, N, Fe, S) is still unclear. And the co-exposure of MPs and PCBs caused more severe effects than single exposure to pollution. Therefore, in this study, a 255-day anaerobic incubation experiment was conducted by adding polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs, including 30 ± 10 μm and 500 μm) and PCB138. The presence of PE MPs inhibited the PCB138 degradation. Also, PE MPs addition (1%, w/w) enhanced the methanogenesis, Fe(Ⅲ) reduction, and sulfate reduction while inhibited nitrate reduction and the biodegradation of PCB138. And PCB138 addition (10 mg·kg-1) promoted the methanogenesis and Fe(Ⅲ) reduction, but inhibited sulfate reduction and nitrate reduction. Strikingly, the presence of PE MPs significantly reduced the impact of PCB138 on the soil redox processes. The abundance changes of special microbial communities, including Anaeromyxobate, Geobacter, Bacillus, Desulfitobacterium, Thermodesulfovibrio, Metanobacterium, etc., were consistent with the changes in soil redox processes, revealing that the effect of PE MPs and/or PCB138 on the cycle of typical biogenic elements was mainly achieved by altering the functional microorganisms. This study improves the knowledge of studies on the impact of MPs and combined organic pollutants to soil redox processes, which is greatly important to the stabilization and balance of biogeochemical cycling in ecology.

Simultaneous suppression of As mobilization and N2O emission from NH4+/As-rich paddy soils by combined nitrate and birnessite amendment

The environmental impacts of As mobilization and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission in flooded paddy soils are serious issues for food safety and agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Several As immobilization strategies utilizing microbially-mediated nitrate reducing-As(III) oxidation (NRAO) and birnessite (δ-MnO2)-induced oxidation/adsorption have proven effective for mitigating As bioavailability in flooded paddy soils. However, several inefficiency and unsustainability issues still exist in these remediation approaches. In this study, the effects of a combined treatment of nitrate and birnessite were assessed for the simultaneous suppression of As(III) mobilization and N2O emission from flooded paddy soils. Microcosm incubations confirmed that the combined treatment achieved an effective suppression of As(III) mobilization and N2O emission, with virtually no As(T) released and at least a 87% decrease in N2O emission compared to nitrate treatment alone after incubating for 8 days. When nitrate and birnessite are co-amended to flooded paddy soils, the activities of denitrifying enzymes within the denitrification electron transport pathway were suppressed by MnO2. As a result, the majority of applied nitrate participated in nitrate-dependent microbial Mn(II) oxidation. The regenerated biogenetic MnO2 was available to facilitate subsequent cycles of As(III) immobilization and concomitant N2O emission suppression, sustainable remediation strategy. Moreover, the combined nitrate-birnessite amendment promoted the enrichment of Pseudomonas, Achromobacter and Cupriavidu, which are known to participate in the oxidation of As(III)/Mn(II). Our findings document strong efficacy for the combined nitrate/birnessite treatment as a remediation strategy to simultaneously mitigate As-pollution and N2O emission, thereby improving food safety and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from flooded paddy soils enriched with NH4+ and As.

Susceptibility of Cd availability in microplastics contaminated paddy soil: Influence of ferric minerals and sulfate reduction

The combined contamination of cadmium (Cd) and microplastics (MPs) in paddy soil always occurred, while its influence on Cd availability remained unclear. This study investigated the Cd availability in Cd-MPs co-contaminated paddy soil in consideration of both ferric minerals and sulfate reduction under flooding conditions. The presence of MPs resulted in a higher Cd releasing risk, as represented by the increase in the available Cd and decrease in Fe-Mn oxide-bound Cd contents, especially on the 7th and 14th days based on the sequential extraction results. MPs facilitated the formation of Fe-organic ligands, which accelerated the reductive dissolution of iron minerals but decreased the amounts of amorphous iron minerals due to the release of dissolved organic substances into pore water. Furthermore, MPs promoted the relative abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria (such as Streptomyces and Desulfovibrio genera), thus increasing the contents of reductive S species, which was advantageous to the co-precipitation of Fe, S, and Cd on the surface of MPs based on our experimental and statistical results. Taken together, both iron and sulfate reduction under anaerobic conditions played a critical role in Cd mobilization in Cd-MPs co-contaminated paddy fields.

Understanding seasonal variations in As and Pb river fluxes and their regulatory mechanisms through monitoring data

The Doce River Basin (DRB) suffers with the adverse impacts of mining activities, due to its high level of urbanization and numerous industrial operations. In this study, we present novel insights into contaminant flow dynamics, seasonal variations, and the primary factors driving concentration levels within the region. We conducted an extensive analysis using a database sourced from the literature, which contained data on the contamination of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in the Doce River. Our primary aim was to investigate the patterns of As and Pb flow throughout the entire basin, their response to seasonal fluctuations, and the key parameters influencing their concentration levels. The results showed significant seasonal fluctuations in As and Pb fluxes, peaking during the rainy season. The 2015 Fundão dam breach in the DRB led to notable changes, elevating elemental concentrations, particularly As and Pb, which were subsequently transported to the Atlantic Ocean. These increased concentrations were primarily associated with iron and manganese oxides, hydroxides, and sulfates, rather than precipitation, as evidenced by regressions with low R2 values for both As (R2 = 0.07) and Pb (R2 < 0.001), concerning precipitation. The PCA analysis further supports the connection between these elements and the oxides and hydroxides of Fe and Mn. The approach employed in this study has proven to be highly effective in comprehending biogeochemical phenomena by leveraging data from the literature and could be a model for optimizing resources by capitalizing on existing information to provide valuable insights for drainage basin management, particularly during crises.

A novel iron sulfide phase with remarkable hydroxyl radical generation capability for contaminants degradation

The hydroxyl radical (·OH) stands as one of the most potent oxidizing agents, capable of engaging in non-selective and instantaneous reactions with contaminants in water. Herein, we present a novel iron sulfide phase (S-FeS) characterized by an unprecedented structure, accompanied by its remarkable hydroxyl radical generation capability and contaminant degradation efficiency surpassing that of the conventional metastable iron sulfide phase, namely, the Mackinawite (FeS). In comparison to FeS, S-FeS exhibits enhanced degradation kinetics and higher efficacy in the removal of methylene blue, ciprofloxacin, and trivalent arsenic. Utilizing density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we postulate the mechanism for the exceptional contaminant degradation performance of S-FeS to be attributed to the increased exposure of the highly reactive (110) crystal facets. This research uncovers a new metastable phase that expands the polymorphisms within the iron sulfide family and showcases its capability for driving the oxygen reduction reaction.

Understanding the role of manganese oxides in retaining harmful metals: Insights into oxidation and adsorption mechanisms at microstructure level

The increasing intensity of human activities has led to a critical environmental challenge: widespread metal pollution. Manganese (Mn) oxides have emerged as potentially natural scavengers that perform crucial functions in the biogeochemical cycling of metal elements. Prior reviews have focused on the synthesis, characterization, and adsorption kinetics of Mn oxides, along with the transformation pathways of specific layered Mn oxides. This review conducts a meticulous investigation of the molecular-level adsorption and oxidation mechanisms of Mn oxides on hazardous metals, including adsorption patterns, coordination, adsorption sites, and redox processes. We also provide a comprehensive discussion of both internal factors (surface area, crystallinity, octahedral vacancy content in Mn oxides, and reactant concentration) and external factors (pH, presence of doped or pre-adsorbed metal ions) affecting the adsorption/oxidation of metals by Mn oxides. Additionally, we identify existing gaps in understanding these mechanisms and suggest avenues for future research. Our goal is to enhance knowledge of Mn oxides' regulatory roles in metal element translocation and transformation at the microstructure level, offering a framework for developing effective metal adsorbents and pollution control strategies.

Sources and seasonal variations of nitrate in the coastal multiple-aquifer groundwater of Beihai, southern China

Elevated nitrate (NO3-) loadings in groundwater may cause health effects in drinking water and nutrient enrichment of aquatic ecosystems. To reveal the sources and seasonal variations of NO3- in the coastal groundwater of Beihai, southern China, we carried out hydrochemical and isotopic (δ15N-δ18O in NO3-) investigations in the summer and winter, respectively, concerning multiple-aquifer groundwater, rainwater, seawater, and surface water. The sources of the main elements present in the waters were interpreted by ionic ratios. NO3- sources were identified by combined use of the δ15N values and δ18O values or NO3-/Na+ molar ratios, with estimations of the proportional contribution by the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model. Denitrification was interpreted along the flow paths. The results show groundwater main elements are originated primarily from silicate weathering, and secondarily from anthropogenic inputs and carbonate dissolution. Its qualities are largely affected by seawater intrusion along the coastline. Because of difference in the predominant minerals within the aquifers and in scale and extent of seawater intrusion, the groundwater displays distinct ionic ratio characters. NO3- concentrations are up to 33.9 mg/L, with higher loadings in the plains relative to along the coastline. Soil N, domestic sewage, rainwater, chemical fertilizers, and algae are NO3- sources, with average proportional contributions of 0.255, 0.221, 0.207, 0.202, and 0.116, respectively. In relation to the winter, higher production of NO3- from nitrification of soil N- and algae-derived ammonium induced by higher temperatures in the summer accounts for increases in groundwater NO3- loadings. In the rural areas, elevated loadings of NO3- in the winter may be due to larger infiltration fractions of sewage. Seasonal variations of atmospheric NO3- deposition and farming may also cause the dynamics. Our results improve the understanding of sources and seasonal dynamics of NO3- in coastal groundwater.

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 dissimilatory reduction of ferrihydrite to highly enhance mineral transformation and reactive oxygen species production in redox-fluctuating environments

Diverse paths generated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) can mediate contaminant transformation and fate in the soil/aquatic environments. However, the pathways for ROS production upon the oxygenation of redox-active ferrous iron minerals are underappreciated. Ferrihydrite (Fh) can be reduced to produce Fe(II) by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, a representative strain of dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB). The microbial reaction formed a spent Fh product named mr-Fh that contained Fe(II). Material properties of mr-Fh were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Magnetite could be observed in all mr-Fh samples produced over 1-day incubation, which might greatly favor the Fe(II) oxygenation process to produce hydroxyl radical (•OH). The maximum amount of dissolved Fe(II) can reach 1.1 mM derived from added 1 g/L Fh together with glucose as a carbon source, much higher than the 0.5 mM generated in the case of the Luria-Bertani carbon source. This may confirm that MR-1 can effectively reduce Fh and produce biogenetic Fe(II). Furthermore, the oxygenation of Fe(II) on the mr-Fh surface can produce abundant ROS, wherein the maximum cumulative •OH content is raised to about 120 μM within 48 h at pH 5, but it is decreased to about 100 μM at pH 7 for the case of MR-1/Fh system after a 7-day incubation. Thus, MR-1-mediated Fh reduction is a critical link to enhance ROS production, and the •OH species is among them the predominant form. XPS analysis proves that a conservable amount of Fe(II) species is subject to adsorption onto mr-Fh. Here, MR-1-mediated ROS production is highly dependent on the redox activity of the form Fe(II), which should be the counterpart presented as the adsorbed Fe(II) on surfaces. Hence, our study provides new insights into understanding the mechanisms that can significantly govern ROS generation in the redox-oscillation environment.

Arsenic biogeochemical cycling association with basin-scale dynamics of microbial functionality and organic matter molecular composition

Geogenic arsenic (As)-contaminated groundwater is a sustaining global health concern that is tightly constrained by multiple interrelated biogeochemical processes. However, a complete spectrum of the biogeochemical network of high-As groundwater remains to be established, concurrently neglecting systematic zonation of groundwater biogeochemistry on the regional scale. We uncovered the geomicrobial interaction network governing As biogeochemical pathways by merging in-field hydrogeochemical monitoring, metagenomic analyses, and ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) characterization of dissolved organic matter. In oxidizing to weakly reducing environments, the nitrate-reduction and sulfate-reduction encoding genes (narGHI, sat) inhibited the dissolution of As-bearing iron minerals, leading to lower As levels in groundwater. In settings from weakly to moderately reducing, high abundances of sulfate-reduction and iron-transport encoding genes boosted iron mineral dissolution and consequent As release. As it evolved to strongly reducing stage, elevated abundance of methane cycle-related genes (fae, fwd, fmd) further enhanced As mobilization in part by triggering the formation of gaseous methylarsenic. During redox cycling of N, S, Fe, C and As in groundwater, As migration to groundwater and immobilization in mineral particles are geochemically constrained by basin-scale dynamics of microbial functionality and DOM molecular composition. The study constructs a theoretical model to summarize new perspectives on the biogeochemical network of As cycling.

Manganese promotes stability of natural arsenic sinks in a groundwater system with arsenic-immobilization minerals: Natural remediation mechanism and environmental implications

Arsenic (As)-immobilizing iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) minerals (AFMM) represent potential As sinks in As-enriched groundwater environments. The process and mechanisms governing As bio-leaching from AFMM through interaction with reducing bacteria, however, remain poorly delineated. This study examined the transformation and release of As from AFMM with varying Mn/Fe molar ratios (0:1, 1:5, 1:3, and 1:1) in the presence of As(V)-reducing bacteria specifically Shewanella putrefaciens CN32. Notably, strain CN32 significantly facilitated the bio-reduction of As(V), Fe(III), and Mn(IV) in AFMM. In systems with Mn/Fe molar ratios of 1:5, 1:3, and 1:1, As bio-reduction decreased by 28%, 34%, and 47%, respectively, compared to the system with a 0:1 ratio. This Mn-induced inhibition of Fe/As bio-reduction was linked to several concurrent factors: preferential Mn bio-reduction, reoxidation of resultant Fe(II)/As(III) due to Mn components, and As adsorption onto emergent Fe precipitates. Both the reductive dissolution of AFMM and the bio-reduction of As(V) predominantly controlled As bio-release. Structural equation models indicated that reducing bacteria destabilize natural As sinks more through As reduction than through Mn(II) release, Fe reduction, or Fe(II) release. Systems with Mn/Fe molar ratios of 1:5, 1:3, and 1:1 showed a decrease in As bio-release by 24%, 41%, and 59%, respectively, relative to the 0:1 system. The observed suppression of As bioleaching was ascribed to both the inhibition of As/Fe bio-reduction by Mn components and the immobilization of As by freshly generated Fe precipitates. These insights into the constraining effect of Mn on the biotransformation and bioleaching of As from AFMM are crucial for grasping the long-term stability of natural As sinks in groundwater, and enhance strategies for in-situ As stabilization in As-afflicted aquifers through Nature-Based Solutions.

Illuminated fulvic acid stimulates denitrification and As(III) immobilization in flooded paddy soils via an enhanced biophotoelectrochemical pathway

Fulvic acid (FA) is a representative photosensitive dissolved organic matter (DOM) compound that occurs naturally in paddy soils. In this study, the effect of a FA + nitrate treatment (0, 4 and 8 mg/L FA + 20 mmol/L nitrate) on denitrification and As(III) immobilization in flooded paddy soils was assessed under dark and intermittently illuminated conditions (12 h light+12 h dark). The FA input stimulated denitrification in illuminated soils (~100 % of nitrate removal within 6 days) compared to dark conditions (~92 % nitrate removal after 6 days). Meanwhile, As(III) (initial concentration of 0.1 mmol/L) was nearly completely immobilized (~100 %) under illuminated conditions after 4 days for the FA + nitrate treatment compared to 90- 93 % retention in the dark. Denitrification and As immobilization were positively related to the FA dosage in the illuminated assays. The stronger denitrification in illuminated soils was ascribed to denitrifiers harvesting photoelectrons from photosensitive substrates/semiconducting minerals. FA addition also increased the activities of denitrifying enzymes (e.g., NAR, NIR and NOR) and the denitrification electron transport system by nearly 0.6-0.7 and 1.5-1.8 times that of the nitrate-alone treatment under illuminated and dark conditions, thereby fostering stronger denitrification. Upon irradiation, As(III) immobilization was not only stimulated by the interactions with the denitrification pathway whereby As(III) acts as an electron donor for denitrifiers, but was also modulated by Fe(III)/oxidative reactive species-derived photooxidation of As(III). Moreover, the FA + nitrate treatment promoted the enrichment of metal-oxidizing bacteria (e.g., Stenotrophomonas and Acidovorax) that are responsible for nitrate-dependent As(III)/Fe(II) oxidation. The results of this study enhance our understanding of interactions among the biogeochemical cycles of As, Fe, N and C, which are intricately linked by a biophotoelectrochemical pathway in flooded paddy soils.

Unraveling seasonal shifts in microbial and geochemical mediated arsenic mobilization at the estuarine sediment-water interface under redox changes

The mobilization of arsenic (As) at the sediment-water interface (SWI) is crucial for determining the accumulation of dissolved As to potentially toxic levels. However, the specific impacts of redox processes involving iron (Fe) and sulfur (S), as well as microbial activities occurring in sediments, on As mobilization at the marine SWI remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated As mobilization at the SWI in the Changjiang Estuary during three different seasons with different benthic redox conditions. The preferential reduction of arsenate (As(V)) to arsenite (As(III)) and subsequent re-adsorption onto newly formed crystalline Fe oxides restricted As release in the As(V) reduction layer. Enhanced Fe(III) reduction in the Fe(III) reduction layer contributed to As release, while the presence of low As-high Fe-high SO42- levels resulted in As removal through adsorption onto pyrite in the sulfate reduction layer. Analysis of functional genes indicated that As(V) in sediments was released into porewater through the reductive dissolution of As(V)-bearing Fe(III) oxides by Geobacter species, followed by microbial reduction of the liberated As(V) to As(III) by microbes carrying the arrA gene. The dominant pathway governing As mobilization at the SWI in the Changjiang Estuary shifted from microbial reduction control during the hypoxic summer to Fe redox control during the aerobic autumn and winter. These findings provide valuable insights into the complex mechanisms driving As mobilization and highlight the importance of considering seasonal variations in understanding As dynamics at the marine SWI.

Environmental pitfalls and associated human health risks and ecological impacts from landfill leachate contaminants: Current evidence, recommended interventions and future directions

The improper management of solid waste, particularly the dumping of untreated municipal solid waste, poses a growing global challenge in both developed and developing nations. The generation of leachate is one of the significant issues that arise from this practice, and it can have harmful impacts on both the environment and public health. This paper presents an overview of the primary waste types that generate landfill leachate and their characteristics. This includes examining the distribution of waste types in landfills globally and how they have changed over time, which can provide valuable insights into potential pollutants in a given area and their trends. With a lack of specific regulations and growing concerns regarding environmental and health impacts, the paper also focuses on emerging contaminants. Furthermore, the environmental and ecological impacts of leachate, along with associated health risks, are analyzed. The potential applications of landfill leachate, suggested interventions and future directions are also discussed in the manuscript. Finally, this work addresses future research directions in landfill leachate studies, with attention, for the first time to the potentialities that artificial intelligence can offer for landfill leachate management, studies, and applications.

Understanding spatial heterogeneity of groundwater arsenic concentrations at a field scale: Taking the Datong Basin as an example to explore the significance of hydrogeological factors

The spatial heterogeneity of arsenic (As) concentration exceeding the 10 μg/L WHO limit at the field scale poses significant challenges for groundwater utilization, but it remains poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, the Daying site was selected as a representative case (As concentration ranged from 1.55 to 2237 μg/L within a 250 × 150 m field), and a total of 28 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for hydrochemistry, As speciation, and stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope. Principal component analysis was employed to identify the primary factors controlling groundwater hydrochemistry. Results indicate that the spatial heterogeneity of groundwater As concentration is primarily attributed to vertical recharge and competitive adsorption. Low vertical recharge introduces reductive substances, such as dissolved organic matter, which enhances the reductive environment and facilitates microbial-induced reduction and mobilization of As. Conversely, areas with high vertical recharge introduce oxidizing agents like SO42- and DO, which act as preferred electron acceptors over Fe(III), thus inhibiting the reductive dissolution of Fe(III) oxides and the mobilization of As. PCA and hydrochemistry jointly indicate that spatial variability of P and its competitive adsorption with As are important factors leading to spatial heterogeneity of groundwater As concentration. However, the impacts of pH, Si, HCO3-, and F- on As adsorption are insignificant. Specifically, low vertical recharge can increase the proportion of As(III) and promote P release through organic matter mineralization. This process further leads to the desorption of As, indicating a synergistic effect between low vertical recharge and competitive adsorption. This field-scale spatial heterogeneity underscores the critical role of hydrogeological conditions. Sites with close hydraulic connections to surface water often exhibit low As concentrations in groundwater. Therefore, when establishing wells in areas with widespread high-As groundwater, selecting sites with open hydrogeological conditions can prove beneficial.

Influence of Divalent Cation Inhibition and Dissolved Organic Matter Enhancement on Phenol Oxidation Kinetics by Manganese Oxides

Manganese oxides can oxidize organic compounds, such as phenols, and may potentially be used in passive water treatment applications. However, the impact of common water constituents, including cations and dissolved organic matter (DOM), on this reaction is poorly understood. For example, the presence of DOM can increase or decrease phenol oxidation rates with manganese oxides. Furthermore, the interactions of DOM and cations and their impact on the phenol oxidation rates have not been examined. Therefore, we investigated the oxidation kinetics of six phenolic contaminants with acid birnessite in ten whole water samples. The oxidation rate constants of 4-chlorophenol, 4-tert-octylphenol, 4-bromophenol, and phenol consistently decreased in all waters relative to buffered ultrapure water, whereas the oxidation rate of bisphenol A and triclosan increased by up to 260% in some waters. Linear regression analyses and targeted experiments demonstrated that the inhibition of phenol oxidation is largely determined by cations. Furthermore, quencher experiments indicated that radical-mediated interactions from oxidized DOM contributed to enhanced oxidation of bisphenol A. The variable changes between compounds and water samples demonstrate the challenge of accurately predicting contaminant transformation rates in environmentally relevant systems based on experiments conducted in the absence of natural water constituents.

Degradation of algae promotes the release of arsenic from sediments under high-sulfate conditions

Sulfate concentrations in eutrophic waters continue to increase; however, the transformations of arsenic (As) in sediments under these conditions are unclear. In this study, we constructed a series of microcosms to investigate the effect of algal degradation on As transformations in sediments with high sulfate concentrations. The results showed that both the elevated sulfate levels and algal degradation enhanced the release of As from sediments to the overlying water, and degradation of algal in the presence of elevated sulfate levels could further contribute to As release. Sulfate competed with arsenate for adsorption in the sediments, leading to As desorption, while algal degradation created a strongly anaerobic environment, leading to the loss of the redox layer in the surface sediments. With high sulfate, algal degradation enhanced sulfate reduction, and sulfur caused the formation of thioarsenates, which may cause re-dissolution of the arsenides, enhancing As mobility by changing the As speciation. The results of sedimentary As speciation analysis indicated that elevated sulfur levels and algal degradation led to a shift of As from Fe2O3/oxyhydroxide-bound state to specifically adsorbed state at the sediment water interface. This study indicated that algal degradation increases the risk of As pollution in sulfate-enriched eutrophic waters.

Cooperative roles of phosphate and dissolved organic matter in inhibiting ferrihydrite transformation and their distinct fates

Phosphate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) mediate the crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite catalyzed by Fe(II) in subsurface environments such as soils and groundwater. However, the cooperative mechanisms underlying the mediation of phosphate and DOM in crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite and the feedback effects on their own distribution and speciation remain unresolved. In this study, solid characterization indicates that phosphate and DOM can collectively inhibit the crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite to lepidocrocite and thus goethite, via synergetic effects of inhibiting recrystallization and electron transfer. Phosphate can be retained on the surface or transformed to a nonextractable form within Fe oxyhydroxides; DOM is either released into the solution or preserved in an extractable form, while it is not incorporated or retained in the interior. Element distribution and DOM composition analysis on Fe oxyhydroxides reveals even distribution of phosphate on the newly formed Fe oxyhydroxides, while the distribution of DOM depends on its specific species. Electrochemical and dynamic force spectroscopic results provide molecular-scale thermodynamic evidence explaining the inhibition of electron transfer between Fe(II) and ferrihydrite by phosphate and DOM, thus influecing the crystalline transformation of ferrihydrite and the distribution of phosphate and DOM. This study provides new insights into the coupled biogeological cycle of Fe with phosphate and DOM in aquatic and terrestrial environments.

Soil redox status governs within-field spatial variation in microbial arsenic methylation and rice straighthead disease

Microbial arsenic (As) methylation in paddy soil produces mainly dimethylarsenate (DMA), which can cause physiological straighthead disease in rice. The disease is often highly patchy in the field, but the reasons remain unknown. We investigated within-field spatial variations in straighthead disease severity, As species in rice husks and in soil porewater, microbial composition and abundance of arsM gene encoding arsenite S-adenosylmethionine methyltransferase in two paddy fields. The spatial pattern of disease severity matched those of soil redox potential, arsM gene abundance, porewater DMA concentration, and husk DMA concentration in both fields. Structural equation modelling identified soil redox potential as the key factor affecting arsM gene abundance, consequently impacting porewater DMA and husk DMA concentrations. Core amplicon variants that correlated positively with husk DMA concentration belonged mainly to the phyla of Chloroflexi, Bacillota, Acidobacteriota, Actinobacteriota, and Myxococcota. Meta-omics analyses of soil samples from the disease and non-disease patches identified 5129 arsM gene sequences, with 71% being transcribed. The arsM-carrying hosts were diverse and dominated by anaerobic bacteria. Between 96 and 115 arsM sequences were significantly more expressed in the soil samples from the disease than from the non-disease patch, which were distributed across 18 phyla, especially Acidobacteriota, Bacteroidota, Verrucomicrobiota, Chloroflexota, Pseudomonadota, and Actinomycetota. This study demonstrates that even a small variation in soil redox potential within the anoxic range can cause a large variation in the abundance of As-methylating microorganisms, thus resulting in within-field variation in rice straighthead disease. Raising soil redox potential could be an effective way to prevent straighthead disease.

Multi-metal contaminant mobilizations by natural colloids and nanoparticles in paddy soils during reduction and reoxidation

Naturally-occurring colloids and nanoparticles are crucial in transporting heavy metal contaminants in soil-water systems. However, information on particle-bound metals' size distribution and elemental composition in paddy soils under redox-fluctuation is scarce. Here, we investigated the mobilization of Cu, Cd, and Pb-containing nanoparticles and colloids in four contaminated soils with distinctive geochemical properties during reduction and subsequent re-oxidation. Using AF4-UV-ICP-MS and STEM-EDS, we observed that particle-bound metals were primarily associated with two sizes ranges: 0.3-40 kDa (F1) and 130 kDa-450 nm (F2), which mainly consisted of organic matter (OM), iron hydroxide and clay minerals. Cu and Pb were more likely bound to colloid than Cd. Colloidal Cu, Pb and Cd accounted for averages of 83.2%, 72.4% and 19.8% of their total concentration in solution (<0.45 µm) during soil reduction, and decreased during soil re-oxidation. This proportion was also positively correlated with aqueous pH and DOC but negatively correlated with Eh. Further quantitative analysis demonstrated that Cu/Cd positively correlated with OM at nanometric scale (F1). This study provides quantitative insights into the size, composition and abundance of polymetallic pollutant-carrying particles in paddy soils during redox fluctuation, and highlights the importance of nanometric interactions between OM and toxic cationic metals for their release.

Insight into the dynamics of dissolved organic matter components under latitude change perturbation

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) which can help the transportation of nutrients and pollutants plays essential role in the aquatic ecosystems. However, the dynamics of individual DOM component under the change of latitude have not been elucidated to date. The composition and dynamics of DOM were assessed in this study. Two individual parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) components were found in each sampling site in Heilongjiang. To further characterize the inner change of the identified PARAFAC components, two-latitude correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) technique was applied to the excitation loadings data. Interestingly, not all the fluorophore in a PARAFAC component change in the same direction as the overall change of a component. From upstream to downstream, the peak A1 in PARAFAC component C1 showed a downward trend, but peak A2 presented an upward trend. In PARAFAC component C2, the peak T2 and peak T3 showed an inverse changing trend under latitude perturbation. Furthermore, basic nutrients parameters in Heilongjiang were also characterized in each sampling sites. The relationships between DOM and nutrients showed that component C1 made a significant contribution to chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). The evolutions of DOM peak A1 and peak A2 were accompanied by the changing of Total phosphorus (TP). The findings in this study could make a contribution to explore the fate of DOM in high humic-like substance containing river.

Putative novel hydrogen- and iron-oxidizing sheath-producing Zetaproteobacteria thrive at the Fåvne deep-sea hydrothermal vent field

IMPORTANCE

Knowledge on microbial iron oxidation is important for understanding the cycling of iron, carbon, nitrogen, nutrients, and metals. The current study yields important insights into the niche sharing, diversification, and Fe(III) oxyhydroxide morphology of Ghiorsea, an iron- and hydrogen-oxidizing Zetaproteobacteria representative belonging to Zetaproteobacteria operational taxonomic unit 9. The study proposes that Ghiorsea exhibits a more extensive morphology of Fe(III) oxyhydroxide than previously observed. Overall, the results increase our knowledge on potential drivers of Zetaproteobacteria diversity in iron microbial mats and can eventually be used to develop strategies for the cultivation of sheath-forming Zetaproteobacteria.

Role of iron manganese plaque in the safe production of rice (Oryza sativa L.) grains: Field evidence at plot and regional scales in cadmium-contaminated paddy soils

The relationship between iron manganese plaque (IP) and cadmium (Cd) accumulation by rice in the microenvironment of rice rhizosphere at varying field scales needs to be further explored. In this study, we selected different rice varieties and implemented tailored amendments to ensure the safe production of rice grains in heavily Cd-contaminated farmland situated around an E-waste dismantling site. Through regional surveys, we elucidated the role of IP in facilitating safe rice production. The selection of low-Cd accumulating rice varieties and application of appropriate amendments with sufficient dosages allowed for the effective reduction of Cd transport from soil to rice, resulting in a safe concentration of Cd in rice grains. Analysis using a random forest algorithm indicated that iron (Fe) played a more pivotal role than manganese in soil-rice systems in mitigating Cd accumulation in brown rice. The presence of Fe in IP (IP-Fe) at a low loading mass was unfavorable to the Cd-safe production of rice, while at an IP-Fe loading mass of 52 g/kg, the Cd content in brown rice decreased to a safe level. Furthermore, precipitation, coprecipitation, and complexation of surface functional groups contributed to Cd fixation on IP, as indicated by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron probe microanalysis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection. Our results highlighted the key role of IP in the production of Cd-safe rice at different field scales.

Abiogenic silicon: Interaction with potentially toxic elements and its ecological significance in soil and plant systems

Abiogenic silicon (Si), though deemed a quasi-nutrient, remains largely inaccessible to plants due to its prevalence within mineral ores. Nevertheless, the influence of Si extends across a spectrum of pivotal plant processes. Si emerges as a versatile boon for plants, conferring a plethora of advantages. Notably, it engenders substantial enhancements in biomass, yield, and overall plant developmental attributes. Beyond these effects, Si augments the activities of vital antioxidant enzymes, encompassing glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD), among others. It achieves through the augmentation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging gene expression, thus curbing the injurious impact of free radicals. In addition to its effects on plants, Si profoundly ameliorates soil health indicators. Si tangibly enhances soil vitality by elevating soil pH and fostering microbial community proliferation. Furthermore, it exerts inhibitory control over ions that could inflict harm upon delicate plant cells. During interactions within the soil matrix, Si readily forms complexes with potentially toxic metals (PTEs), encapsulating them through Si-PTEs interactions, precipitative mechanisms, and integration within colloidal Si and mineral strata. The amalgamation of Si with other soil amendments, such as biochar, nanoparticles, zeolites, and composts, extends its capacity to thwart PTEs. This synergistic approach enhances soil organic matter content and bolsters overall soil quality parameters. The utilization of Si-based fertilizers and nanomaterials holds promise for further increasing food production and fortifying global food security. Besides, gaps in our scientific discourse persist concerning Si speciation and fractionation within soils, as well as its intricate interplay with PTEs. Nonetheless, future investigations must delve into the precise functions of abiogenic Si within the physiological and biochemical realms of both soil and plants, especially at the critical juncture of the soil-plant interface. This review seeks to comprehensively address the multifaceted roles of Si in plant and soil systems during interactions with PTEs.

Structural and mineralogical variation upon reoxidation of reduced Fe-bearing clay minerals during thermal activation

The hydroxyl radicals (OH) produced from Fe(II) oxidation upon reoxidation of reduced Fe-bearing clay minerals (RFC) have received increased attention and thermal activation was used to enhance Fe(II) oxidation to improve OH production. However, changes in mineral morphology and structure during thermally-activated RFC reoxidation are not yet clear. Herein, the Fe(II) oxidation extent was measured by chemical analysis during the reoxidation of model RFC (reduced nontronite (rNAu-2) at elevated temperatures. Mineralogical variation of rNAu-2 particles was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Mössbauer spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The structural Fe(II) oxidation in rNAu-2 was accelerated with increasing temperature, accompanied by the transformation of structural entities and the dissolution of Fe and Si, while the overall structure of rNAu-2 minerals was relatively intact. The surface microstructure of particles showed the dissolved holes, net-shape flocs, and even large pore channels after Fe(II) oxidation by thermal activation. Moreover, the rearrangement of structural Fe(II) entities, the regeneration of edge Fe(II), and the electron transport from the interior to the edge were enhanced during rNAu-2 reoxidation by thermal activation. The increasing electron transfer at elevated temperatures could possibly be owing to the increasing number of reactive sites by increasing the internal disorder of rNAu-2. This work provides novel insights into the structural and mineralogical changes in promoting electron transfer upon RFC reoxidation.

Coupled Processes Involving Organic Matter and Fe Oxyhydroxides Control Geogenic Phosphorus Enrichment in Groundwater Systems: New Evidence from FT-ICR-MS and XANES

The enrichment of geogenic phosphorus (P) in groundwater systems threatens environmental and public health worldwide. Two significant factors affecting geogenic P enrichment include organic matter (OM) and Fe (oxyhydr)oxide (FeOOH). However, due to variable reactivities of OM and FeOOH, variable strategies of their coupled influence controlling P enrichment in groundwater systems remain elusive. This research reveals that when the depositional environment is enriched in more labile aliphatic OM, its fermentation is coupled with the reductive dissolution of both amorphous and crystalline FeOOHs. When the depositional environment is enriched in more recalcitrant aromatic OM, it largely relies on crystalline FeOOH acting concurrently as electron acceptors while serving as "conduits" to help itself stimulate degradation and methanogenesis. The main source of geogenic P enriched by these two different coupled processes is different: the former is P-containing OM, which mainly contained unsaturated aliphatic compounds and highly unsaturated-low O compounds, and the latter is P associated with crystalline FeOOH. In addition, geological setting affects the deposition rate of sediments, which can alter OM degradation/preservation, and subsequently affects geochemical conditions of geogenic P occurrence. These findings provide new evidence and perspectives for understanding the hydro(bio)geochemical processes controlling geogenic P enrichment in alluvial-lacustrine aquifer systems.

Microbial community dynamics and cycling of plutonium and iron in a seasonally stratified and radiologically contaminated pond

Plutonium (Pu) cycling and mobility in the environment can be impacted by the iron cycle and microbial community dynamics. We investigated the spatial and temporal changes of the microbiome in an iron (Fe)-rich, plutonium-contaminated, monomictic reservoir (Pond B, Savannah River Site, South Carolina, USA). The microbial community composition varied with depth during seasonal thermal stratification and was strongly correlated with redox. During stratification, Fe(II) oxidizers (e.g., Ferrovum, Rhodoferax, Chlorobium) were most abundant in the hypoxic/anoxic zones, while Fe(III) reducers (e.g., Geothrix, Geobacter) dominated the deep, anoxic zone. Sulfate reducers and methanogens were present in the anoxic layer, likely contributing to iron and plutonium cycling. Multinomial regression of predicted functions/pathways identified metabolisms highly associated with stratification (within the top 5%), including iron reduction, methanogenesis, C1 compound utilization, fermentation, and aromatic compound degradation. Two sediment cores collected at the Inlet and Outlet of the pond were dominated by putative fermenters and organic matter (OM) degraders. Overall, microbiome analyses revealed the potential for three microbial impacts on the plutonium and iron biogeochemical cycles: (1) plutonium bioaccumulation throughout the water column, (2) Pu-Fe-OM-aggregate formation by Fe(II) oxidizers under microaerophilic/aerobic conditions, and (3) Pu-Fe-OM-aggregate or sediment reductive dissolution and organic matter degradation in the deep, anoxic waters.

Exploring the mechanism of Cd uptake and translocation in rice: Future perspectives of rice safety

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice fields has been recognized as a severe global agro-environmental issue. To reach the goal of controlling Cd risk, we must pay more attention and obtain an in-depth understanding of the environmental behavior, uptake and translocation of Cd in soil-rice systems. However, to date, these aspects still lack sufficient exploration and summary. Here, we critically reviewed (i) the processes and transfer proteins of Cd uptake/transport in the soil-rice system, (ii) a series of soil and other environmental factors affecting the bioavailability of Cd in paddies, and (iii) the latest advances in regard to remediation strategies while producing rice. We propose that the correlation between the bioavailability of Cd and environmental factors must be further explored to develop low Cd accumulation and efficient remediation strategies in the future. Second, the mechanism of Cd uptake in rice mediated by elevated CO2 also needs to be given more attention. Meanwhile, more scientific planting methods (direct seeding and intercropping) and suitable rice with low Cd accumulation are important measures to ensure the safety of rice consumption. In addition, the relevant Cd efflux transporters in rice have yet to be revealed, which will promote molecular breeding techniques to address the current Cd-contaminated soil-rice system. The potential for efficient, durable, and low-cost soil remediation technologies and foliar amendments to limit Cd uptake by rice needs to be examined in the future. Conventional breeding procedures combined with molecular marker techniques for screening rice varieties with low Cd accumulation could be a more practical approach to select for desirable agronomic traits with low risk.

Enhancing rice quality and productivity: Multifunctional biochar for arsenic, cadmium, and bacterial control in paddy soil

The perilousness of arsenic and cadmium (As-Cd) toxicity in water and soil presents a substantial hazard to the ecosystem and human well-being. Additionally, this metal (loids) (MLs) can have a deleterious effect on rice quality and yield, owing to the existence of toxic stress. In response to the pressing concern of reducing the MLs accumulation in rice grain, this study has prepared magnesium-manganese-modified corn-stover biochar (MMCB), magnesium-manganese-modified eggshell char (MMEB), and a combination of both (MMCEB). To test the effectiveness of these amendments, several pot trials were conducted, utilizing 1% and 2% application rates. The research discovered that the MMEB followed by MMCEB treatment at a 2% rate yielded the most significant paddy and rice quality, compared to the untreated control (CON) and MMCB. MMEB and MMCEB also extensively decreased the MLs content in the grain than CON, thereby demonstrating the potential to enrich food security and human healthiness. In addition, MMEB and MMCEB augmented the microbial community configuration in the paddy soil, including As-Cd detoxifying bacteria, and decreased bioavailable form of the MLs in the soil compared to the CON.
