Abstract
The separation of oil from microalgae aqueous emulsions is a critical step in producing algal-derived biofuels and nutraceuticals. This study presents the development of super hydrophilic and super oleophobic composite membranes to efficiently separate algal oil from oil/water emulsions. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were functionalized with polydopamine (PDA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles and coated onto a mixed cellulose ester (MCE) substrate to fabricate the composite membranes. Two distinct incorporation methods were employed for TiO2; direct nanoparticle incorporation and surface coating onto the CNT/PDA network. The membranes were comprehensively characterized using FTIR, SEM, EDS, contact angle measurements, and AFM analysis. The synthesized MCE@CNT/PDA/NP-TiO2 membrane exhibited super hydrophilicity with a water contact angle of 6.3° and underwater super oleophobicity with oil contact angles up to 172°. Membrane performance evaluation using a Nannochloropsis salina microalgae oil/water emulsion revealed excellent flux up to 9238 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 and oil rejection as high as 98.6 % for the TiO2-incorporated membranes. Additionally, these membranes demonstrated superior antifouling properties, maintaining over 90 % of initial flux even after five separation cycles. Incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles significantly enhanced the membrane's hydrophilicity, oleophobicity, antifouling capability, and stability under extreme pH conditions. The developed composite membranes show great potential for efficient and cost-effective separation of algal oil from microalgae cultivation systems.

Abstract
Food-derived bioactive peptides are a class of peptides from natural protein. It may have biological effects on the human body and play a significant role in protecting human physiological health and regulating physiological metabolism, such as lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, antioxidant, antibacterial, regulating immune activity, and so on. However, most of the natural food-derived functional peptides need to overcome a variety of barriers in the body to enter the blood circulation system and target to specific tissues to generate physiological activity. During this process, the bioavailability of the functional peptides will be reduced. The nano-delivery system can offer the feasibility to overcome these obstacles and improve the stability and bioavailability of food-derived active peptides by nanoencapsulation. This work summarizes the application of food-derived bioactive peptides and the obstacles during the delivery pathway in vivo. Moreover, the different nano-delivery systems used for bioactive peptides and their application were summarized, which could provide ideas for oral delivery of food-derived bioactive peptides.

Abstract
Nanotechnology has gained recognition as the next uprising technology in numerous sectors, together with food industry and agriculture. Diminution of particle size to nanoscale range enhances the surface area, eventually surface-to-volume ratio, subsequently enhances their reactivity by several times, modifying optical, electrical, and mechanical features. Nanotechnology can also modify the aqueous solubility, thermal stability, and bioavailability in oral delivery of bioactive nutraceuticals. Recent research developed number of suitable delivery systems that provide effective site specific release of the nutraceuticals in control way for better utilization. Phospholipid, liposomes, niosome, emulsion, microemulsion/ nanoemulsions, ethosomes, SNEDDS, SLN based delivery vehicles, Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) for nutraceutical delivery systems will be discussed in this review. Mainly the formulations, principle of the above carrier along with recent researches of those technologies will be discussed. Graphical abstract

Abstract
In order to overcome some of the drawbacks of traditional formulations, increasing emphasis has recently been paid to lipid-based drug delivery systems. Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) are promising delivery methods, and they hold promise because of their simplicity in production, capacity to scale up, biocompatibility, and biodegradability of formulation components. Other benefits could be connected to a particular route of administration or the makeup of the ingredients being placed into these delivery systems. This article aims to review the significance of solid lipid nanocarriers, their benefits and drawbacks, as well as their types, compositions, methods of preparation, mechanisms of drug release, characterization, routes of administration, and applications in a variety of delivery systems with a focus on their efficacy.

Abstract
In the face of growing global challenges in food security and increasing demand for sustainable protein sources, the aquaculture industry is undergoing a transformative shift through the integration of nanotechnology. This review paper explores the profound role of nanotechnology in aquaculture, addressing critical issues such as efficient feed utilization, disease management, and environmental sustainability. Nanomaterials are used to enhance nutritional content and digestibility of aquafeed, optimize fish growth and health, and improve disease prevention. Nanoparticle-based vaccines and drug delivery systems reduce antibiotic reliance, while nano sensors monitor water quality in real-time. Furthermore, nanotechnology has revolutionized infrastructure design, contributing to smart, self-regulating aquaculture systems. Despite its vast potential, challenges such as ethical considerations and long-term safety must be addressed. This paper highlights nanotechnology's transformative role in aquaculture, underscoring its potential to contribute significantly to global food security through enhanced productivity and sustainability.

Abstract
To improve the stability of pollock bone broth, compound emulsifiers were employed and evaluated in nano-emulsions from pollock bones (PBNs). The microstructure, creaming index, particle size, zeta potential, and viscosity of PBNs were characterized and the stability of PBNs was investigated. It revealed that the concentration of compound emulsifiers is one of the principal factors for particle size, zeta potential, and viscosity of PBNs, and 0.9% of sodium caseinate and sucrose fatty acid ester (CS-SE) can make the PBN display good stability. Its particle size changed from 81.17 ± 1.33 nm to 19.62 ± 0.21 nm when the temperature ranged from 40 °C to 80 °C, and its creaming index could reach a maximum (90.83%) among all PBNs in 4 months of freeze-thaw assays. PBN stability could be improved by the compound emulsifier (CS-SE), which offers a theoretical basis for the application of pollock bone broth.

Abstract
Lysinoalanine (LAL) formed during alkaline extraction of rice residue protein (RRPI), which limited its application in the food industry. In this study, the influence of ultrasonication parameters (acoustic power density, ultrasound duration, and ultrasound temperature) on the inhibition of LAL formation and conformational attributes of RRPI during alkaline extraction was elucidated. The results suggested that the acoustic power density substantially modified the chemical interaction forces between RRPI molecules. At a power density of 60 W/L, the ionic bonds (14.37%) and hydrophobic interactions (49.28%) reached the maximum, while hydrogen bonds (15.29%) and disulfide bonds (21.06%) reached the minimum. Moreover, acoustic power density at 60 W/L caused a decrease of 18.02% and 12.2% in α-helix, and β-turn, respectively, shifting toward β-sheet, random coil, with an increase of 7.31% and 36.16%. Following ultrasonication, the protein particle size distribution curve shifted in the direction of smaller particle size, forming a relatively concentrated and uniform protein distribution. Sonication power, temperature, and time decreased the absolute value of Zeta potential. Furthermore, significant destruction in microstructure was elicited by sonication, which made the structure looser and more microparticles. Pearson correlation analysis suggested that the inhibition in the levels of LAL was most influenced by the increase of sulfhydryl groups and Zeta potential, as well as the reduction of α-helix content, in which the alteration of the total sulfhydryl group content had a great impact on the Zeta potential and the free sulfhydryl group. The principal component analysis demonstrated a notable correlation between the total sulfhydryl group and both the Zeta potential and free sulfhydryl group of RRPI.

Abstract
As a natural emulsifier, egg white protein (EWP) has great interfacial characteristics and high security, and has broad development prospects. This study explored the impact of ultrasound synergized citral (CI) treatment on the microstructure, molecular flexibility and emulsifying property of EWP, and predicted the interaction between CI and ovalbumin (the main protein in EWP) through molecular docking. The decrease in free amino content and the growth in molecular weight of EWP suggested that CI and proteins were successfully grafted. The results of physicochemical properties revealed that UCEWP (ultrasound synergized citral-treated EWP) had smaller particle size and larger ζ-potential absolute value, which meant that the stability of UCEWP system was enhanced. From the perspective of interfacial characteristics, UCEWP had lower interfacial tension, which remarkably improved its emulsifying property. The emulsifying activity index (EAI) and emulsifying stability index (ESI) of UCEWP were 1.99 times and 3.19 times higher than that of natural EWP (NEWP). Analysis of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and fluorescence spectroscopy illustrated that the secondary and tertiary structures of UCEWP were more disordered and stretched than those of EWPs. Protein microstructure demonstrated that UCEWP presented loose small particle distribution, and correlation analysis reflected that the improvement of molecular flexibility was positively correlated with the enhancement of emulsifying property. These results elucidated that ultrasound synergized CI treatment is an effective mean to improve the molecular flexibility and emulsifying property of EWP, which provides a valuable reference for further application of EWP.

Abstract
This study assessed the effects of fatty acid length and saturation on the physicochemical, thermal, and gastrointestinal digestive characteristics of curcumin-loaded homo-triacylglycerol nanoparticles (C-NPs). All C-NPs had good colloidal stability and efficiently entrapped curcumin, regardless of their length and saturation. Tricaprylin NPs, with shorter chains, had a smaller size and emulsifier surface load. Curcumin was released faster from low-melting C-NPs (tricaprylin and triolein) than those with high-melting-point (trimyristin, tripalmitin, and tristearin); however, both were negligible without lipolysis. None of the C-NPs underwent significant aggregation, coalescence, or breakdown during digestion before the small intestine. Notably, longer and more saturated chains resulted in a slower initial rate and lower degree of lipolysis in the small intestine. However, greater bioaccessibility of curcumin was observed only with longer chains (tricaprylin, 70.72%; trimyristin, 78.05%; tripalmitin, 85.09%; tristearin, 89.65%; triolein, 89.71%). Abstract
Background/Objectives: Although androgenic alopecia is the most prevalent among non-cicatricial alopecia, it still lacks an effective and safe treatment. Dutasteride (DUT) shows promising results in hair regrowth; however, oral DUT intake causes serious sexual adverse events. Hence, we produced liposomes with different bilayer structures and evaluated the capability of such systems in increasing DUT accumulation in the hair follicles. Methods: In vitro skin penetration tests were performed with porcine ear skin, and the follicular targeting factor (Tf) was calculated as the ratio between DUT amount in HFs and DUT recovered from the sum of all skin layers. Results: While the stiffer DUT-loaded liposome was not able to target the hair follicles in 12 h (Tf = 0.15), a DUT-loaded liposome with an edge activator in its composition, i.e., transfersomes, promoted better control over DUT release and a higher Tf (0.32) (p < 0.005). Conclusions: Transfersomes present higher affinity with DUT providing a better controlled release; hence, they are a better option for DUT follicle targeting compared to liposomes. Further formulation optimizations are needed aiming to prolong such targeting effect.

Abstract
Despite progress in genetic and molecular research, which has opened up a myriad of targeted therapeutic possibilities, the compromised solubility and absorption profile of therapeutic entities restrict their passage across lipid barriers compromising efficacy. Consequently, nanoemulsions accrued significance as futuristic, safe, and effective lipid-based drug delivery systems due to their inherent array of physicochemical properties and provide exquisite bioavailability, reduced toxicity, and improved solubility of hydrophobic entities based on size and surface area. However, a pronounced gap exists in understanding and addressing challenges that arise during design and development of nanoemulsions. In this context, we have attempted to reconsider overlooked aspects of nanoemulsion design, offering insight into its commercial viability.

Abstract
AIMS Nanoemulsions based on plant essential oils have shown promise as alternatives against fungal pathogens by increasing the solubility and bioavailability of the active compounds of essential oils, which can improve their efficacy and safety. In the present study, we aimed to prepare and characterize nanoemulsions of Lippia origanoides essential oil, and analyze their antifungal activity against C. albicans in planktonic and biofilm form. Additionally, we sought to verify their cytotoxicity. METHODS AND RESULTS Alginate nanoemulsions were prepared with different concentrations of essential oil, sunflower oil, and surfactant to investigate ideal formulations regarding stability and antifungal efficiency. The results showed the nanoemulsions remained stable for longer than 60 days, with acidic pH, particle sizes ranging from 180.17 ± 6.86 nm to 497.85 ± 253.50 nm, zeta potential from -60.47 ± 2.25 to -43.63 ± 12, and polydispersity index from 0.004 to 0.622. The photomicrographs revealed that the addition of sunflower oil influenced the formation of the particles, forming nanoemulsions. The antifungal results of the essential oil and nanoemulsions showed that the MIC ranged from 0.078 to 0.312 mg ml-1. The nanoemulsions were more effective than the free essential oil in eradicating the biofilm, eliminating up to 89.7% of its mass. With regard to cytotoxicity, differences were found between the tests with VERO cells and red blood cells, and the nanoemulsions were less toxic to red blood cells than the free essential oil. CONCLUSIONS These results show that nanoemulsions have antifungal potential against strains of C. albicans in planktonic and biofilm forms.

Abstract
With the rapid development of globalization, food packaging takes on more responsibility, while guaranteeing product quality and safety. In this context, the health risks associated with chemically synthesized additives and inorganic nanoparticles have opened a new chapter in the reinforcement of food packaging with natural active ingredients. Various delivery carriers have been developed to overcome the limitations of poor stability, uneven dispersion, and low bioavailability of natural active ingredients. The combination of encapsulation technologies can increase the biocompatibility of the active ingredient with the packaging material. Moreover, the protective and slow-release effects of the carrier matrix on the active ingredients are desirable for the reinforcement of food packaging. This review presents the latest advances in the application of delivery systems in food packaging, including the types of delivery systems used in food packaging, reinforced properties of food packaging, and potential applications in the food industry. Previous scientific studies found that active ingredient-loaded delivery carriers increased the effectiveness of food packaging in preventing food spoilage. Furthermore, the integration of active packaging with smart food packaging exhibits the synergistic effects of freshness monitoring and quality preservation. This review also discusses the challenges and trends in reinforcing food packaging with delivery carriers under a synergistic strategy that will provide new ideas and insights for the development and application of innovative food packaging.

Abstract
Curcumin is a natural food ingredient and has the potential to alleviate inflammation and combat cancer. The incidence of intestinal inflammation has been increasing and poses a severe risk to human health. Due to low absorption and bioavailability, curcumin's anti-inflammatory ability is ineffective. To improve the bioavailability of curcumin, descriptions of the intestinal barrier, signaling pathways, and transport mechanisms are reviewed. Blocking the signaling pathways lowers the number of inflammatory cytokines produced, which is the primary mechanism by which curcumin relieves inflammatory symptoms. The bioavailability of curcumin is not only related to physicochemical properties but also to the nature of the carrier material. Environmental indicators also have an impact on the improvement of curcumin bioavailability in applications. There is a need to develop multifunctional and more stable nanomaterial targeting systems to improve curcumin bioavailability and achieve better results in nanotechnology research and targeted inflammation therapy.

Abstract
Nanoencapsulation has found numerous applications in the food and nutraceutical industries. Micro and nanoencapsulated forms of bioactives have proven benefits in terms of stability, release, and performance in the body. However, the encapsulated ingredient is often subjected to a wide range of processing conditions and this is followed by storage, consumption, and transit along the gastrointestinal tract. A strong understanding of the fate of nanoencapsulates in the biological system is mandatory as it provides valuable insights for ingredient selection, formulation, and application. In addition to their efficacy, there is also the need to assess the safety of ingested nanoencapsulates. Given the rising research and commercial focus of this subject, this review provides a strong focus on their interaction factors and mechanisms, highlighting their prospective biological fate. This review also covers various approaches to studying the fate of nanoencapsulates in the body. Also, with emphasis on the overall scope, the need for a new advanced integrated common methodology to evaluate the fate of nanoencapsulates post-administration is discussed.

Abstract
Multiple myeloma, the second most common hematological malignancy, remains incurable with a 5-year survival rate of approximately 50 % and recurrence rates near 100 %, despite significant attempts to develop effective medicines. Therefore, there is a pressing demand in the medical field for innovative and more efficient treatments for MM. Currently, the standard approach for treating MM involves administering high-dose chemotherapy, which frequently correlates with improved results; however, one major limiting factor is the significant side effects of these medications. Furthermore, the strategies used to deliver medications to tumors limit their efficacy, whether by rapid clearance from circulation or an insufficient concentration in cancer cells. Cancer treatment has shifted from cytotoxic, nonspecific chemotherapy regimens to molecularly targeted, rationally developed drugs with improved efficacy and fewer side effects. Nanomedicines may provide an effective alternative way to avoid these limits by delivering drugs into the complicated bone marrow microenvironment and efficiently reaching myeloma cells. Putting drugs into nanoparticles can make their pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles much better. This can increase the drug's effectiveness in tumors, extend its time in circulation in the blood, and lower its off-target toxicity. In this review, we introduce several criteria for the rational design of nanomedicine to achieve the best anti-tumoral therapeutic results. Next, we discuss recent advances in nanomedicine for MM therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nanotechnology has the potential to reduce drug dosage while increasing efficacy; thus, the current work intends to synthesize diclazuril nanoemulsion and assess its performance against experimental coccidiosis in broilers. METHODS Diclazuril nanoemulsion (DZN) was formulated and characterized by zeta seizer and zeta potential. The formulated DZN was evaluated in vivo against Eimeria tenella infected chicks. DZN and DZ were used in 2 programs; therapeutic and prophylactic. A total of 210 one-day-old broiler chicks were distributed equally into six groups. The controls were negative uninfected untreated and positive infected untreated (G1 & G2). Therapeutic groups (G3 & G4) treated by DZ and DZN after appearance of the clinical signs of coccidiosis and continued for 5 days. Prophylaxis groups (G5 & G6) received DZ and DZN at 3 days before challenge and continued for 5 days after infection. The treatments dosages were 10 mg/mL for DZ of commercial origin and 2.5 mg/mL for the prepared DZN. All groups (except negative control) orally infected then followed up for clinical signs of coccidiosis, mortality rate, oocysts count, performance, hematological and biochemical parameters in addition to histopathological lesions. RESULTS The therapeutic groups showed that both treated groups (DZ and DZN) revealed similar results including good body weight gain, a low lesion caecal score, a low daily and total oocyst shedding count, and a low mortality rate. Regarding the biochemical parameters, all parameters were affected during infection then restored after the 12th day post infection. However, in the prophylactic groups, showed mild clinical signs and the blood pictures and biochemical parameters were nearly like the control negative without infection. CONCLUSION DZN at a quarter dose of standard DZ produced the same outcomes as DZ at 10 mg/mL. Furthermore, DZN does not impair the typical safety of diclazuril in treated chicks.

Abstract
This study investigated the potential of self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery systems (SNEDDS) to optimize the oral bioavailability of insulin. Insulin complexes with phospholipids and enzymatically-modified phospholipids were developed and incorporated into the SNEDDS using Lauroglycol FCC as the oily phase and Cremophor EL and Labrafil M1944CS as the surfactant and co-surfactant, respectively. Additionally, mucoadhesive polysaccharides (sodium alginate and guar gum) were added further to enhance the bioavailability of insulin in these systems. The objective was to increase the bioavailability and bioactivity of an insulin-modified phosphatidylcholine complex by incorporating mucoadhesives into the SNEDDS. After polymer inclusion, the resulting nanoemulsions exhibited droplet diameters ranging from 57 to 83 nm. Cytotoxicity and apparent permeability tests were conducted on Caco-2 and NIH 3 T3 cell lines, revealing that toxicity was related to the concentrations of insulin and surfactant in the nanosystems-formulations containing guar gum as a mucoadhesive showed better tolerance to cell death in the Caco-2 line. In a murine diabetes model, the SNEDDS were observed to reduce glucose levels by up to 61.63 %, with a relative bioavailability of 2.25 % compared to subcutaneously administered insulin. These results suggest that SNEDDS incorporating mucoadhesives could represent a promising strategy for improving oral insulin delivery.

Abstract
Phytoconstituent based therapies have the potential to reduce the adverse effects and enhance overall patient compliance for different diseased conditions. Embelin (EMB) is a natural compound extracted from Embelia ribes that has demonstrated high therapeutic potential, particularly as anti-inflammatory and anticancer therapeutic applications. However, its poor water solubility and low oral bioavailability limitations make it challenging to use in biomedical applications. Nanostructure-based novel formulations have shown the potential to improve physicochemical and biological characteristics of active pharmaceutical ingredients obtained from plants. Different nanoformulations that have been utilized to encapsulate/entrap EMB for various therapeutic applications are nanoliposomes, nanostructured lipid carriers, niosomes, polymeric nanoparticles, nanosuspensions, phytosomes, self nanoemulsifying drug delivery system, silver nanoparticles, microparticles, solid lipid nanoparticle, gold nanoparticles and nanomicelles. The common methods reported for the preparation of EMB nanoformulations are thin film hydration, nanoprecipitation, ethanol injection, emulsification followed by sonication. The size of nanoformulations ranged in between 50 and 345 nm. In this review, the mentioned EMB loaded nanocarriers are methodically discussed for size, shape, drug entrapment, zeta potential, in vitro release & permeation and in vivo studies. Potential of EMB with other drugs (dual drug approach) incorporated in nanocarriers are also discussed (physicochemical and preclinical characteristics). Patents related to EMB nanoformulations are also presented which showed the clinical translation of this bioactive for future utilization in different indications.

Abstract
Betulinic acid (BA) is a natural compound with significant potential for treating various diseases, including cancer and AIDS, and possesses additional anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. However, its clinical application is limited because of its low solubility in water, which impairs its distribution within the body. To overcome this challenge, nanoemulsions have been developed to improve the bioavailability of such poorly soluble drugs. This study investigated modified phosphatidylcholine (PC), where some fatty acids were replaced with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) to stabilize BA nanoemulsions. The modified PC was used to prepare nanoemulsions with droplet sizes of up to 45 nanometers. These nanoemulsions maintained stability for 60 days at room temperature (25°C±2°C) and under refrigeration (5°C±1°C), with no signs of instability. Nanoemulsions stabilized with CLA-modified PC achieved a higher drug encapsulation rate (93.5±4.3 %) than those using natural PC (82.8±4.2 %). In an in vivo model, both nanoemulsion formulations significantly increased BA absorption, with CLA-modified PC enhancing absorption by 21.3±1.3 times and natural PC by 20±2.3 times compared to the free drug. This suggests that nanoemulsions with modified PC could improve the stability and efficacy of BA in clinical applications.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of applying oxidized cassava starch-based edible coatings with addition of lemongrass essential oil emulsion on 'Palmer' mangoes stored under refrigeration. A completely randomized design was used, arranged in a 5 × 3 factorial scheme, with five types of coatings and three evaluation times. The evaluated postharvest quality parameters consisted of weight loss, pulp and peel firmness, biochemical transformations related to pigments, and pulp and peel coloration of mango. The application of edible coatings with a 0.9 % EO concentration resulted in delayed fruit ripening, evidenced mainly by a 7.25 % reduction in weight loss, a 29.23 % increase in soluble solids content, and a 24.15 % decrease in total chlorophyll, when compared to uncoated fruits, which showed 19.8 %, 48.66 %, and 82.00 %, respectively, over the storage period. This effect was also evident in the angle Hue (°h) measurement, with uncoated fruits showing a decrease of 32.2 %. The antimicrobial effect and absence of anthracnose symptoms were observed in the fruits in which the coating with 0.9 % EO was applied. Therefore, biodegradable coating with the addition of 0.9 % emulsion EO, can be used as postharvest treatments for maintenance quality of 'Palmer' mangoes during refrigerated storage.

Abstract
Microencapsulation has the potential to address the stability issues associated with vitamin A. This study examined the effectiveness of emulsifying a saponin-chitosan polyelectrolyte complex to encapsulate vitamin A. Utilizing response surface methodology (RSM), the effects of the chitosan, saponin, and vitamin A contents on various response variables were measured to optimize the formulation. The optimized emulsion was characterized through fluorescence microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), storage stability, and release profile. Fluorescence microscopy showed that vitamin A was evenly distributed throughout the optimized emulsion. The polyelectrolyte complex and vitamin A were shown to interact hydrophobically and electrostatically by FTIR analysis. The DSC results verified the effective encapsulation and showed that vitamin A heat stability had been enhanced. Study on storage stability demonstrated that during a 2-month storage period, the encapsulated vitamin A remained stable. Moreover, vitamin A was significantly released from the encapsulated form at pH 1.2, based on release assays. In conclusion, saponin-chitosan polyelectrolyte coating proved to be a potentially useful new material for the stability and applications of vitamin A in a range of formulations.

Abstract
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs, n-3 PUFAs), including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), are essential polyunsaturated fats primarily obtained from fatty fish and plant-based sources. Compelling evidence from preclinical and epidemiological studies consistently suggests beneficial effects of ω-3 PUFAs on bone health and healthy aging processes. However, clinical trials have yielded mixed results, with some failing to replicate these benefits seen in preclinical models. This contraindication is mainly due to challenges such as low bioavailability, potential adverse effects with higher doses, and susceptibility to oxidation of ω-3 fatty acids, hindering their clinical effectiveness. This review comprehensively discusses recent findings from a clinical perspective, along with preclinical and epidemiological studies, emphasizing the role of ω-3 PUFAs in promoting bone health and supporting healthy aging. Additionally, it explores strategies to improve ω-3 PUFA efficacy, including nanoparticle encapsulation and incorporation of specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPM) derived from DHA and EPA, to mitigate oxidation and enhance solubility, thereby improving therapeutic potential. By consolidating evidence from various studies, this review underscores current insights and future directions in leveraging ω-3 PUFAs for therapeutic applications.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) have antimicrobial properties, but their low solubility in water and strong flavor pose challenges for direct incorporation into food, as they can negatively impact organoleptic properties. To overcome these issues, strategies such as oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions have been developed to improve EO dispersion and protection while enhancing antimicrobial efficacy. The objective of this study was to create sodium alginate-pink pepper essential oil (PPEO) nanoemulsions using microfluidization. Various formulations were assessed for physicochemical, physical, and antimicrobial properties to evaluate their potential in food applications. The microfluidized emulsions and nanoemulsions had droplet sizes ranging from 160 to 443 nm, polydispersity index (PdI) ranging from 0.273 to 0.638, and zeta potential (ζ) ranging from -45.2 to 66.3 mV. The nanoemulsions exhibited Newtonian behavior and remarkable stability after 20 days of storage. Antimicrobial testing revealed effectiveness against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 200 µg/mL for both microorganisms and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) of 800 µg/mL and 400 µg/mL, respectively, proving that encapsulation of PPEO in nanoemulsions significantly increased its antibacterial activity. These results present the possibility of using PPEO nanoemulsions as a more effective natural alternative to synthetic preservatives in food systems.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd2+) is a non-essential and highly toxic element to all organic life forms, including plants and humans. In response to Cd stress, plants have evolved multiple protective mechanisms, such as Cd2+ chelation, vesicle sequestration, the regulation of Cd2+ uptake, and enhanced antioxidant defenses. When Cd2+ accumulates in plants to a certain level, it triggers a burst of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to chlorosis, growth retardation, and potentially death. To counteract this, plants utilize a complex network of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems to manage ROS and protect cells from oxidative damage. This review systematically summarizes how various elements, including nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, iron, and zinc, as well as phytohormones such as abscisic acid, auxin, brassinosteroids, and ethylene, and signaling molecules like nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydrogen sulfide, regulate the antioxidant system under Cd stress. Furthermore, it explores the mechanisms by which exogenous regulators can enhance the antioxidant capacity and mitigate Cd toxicity.

Abstract
Achieving a reversible decrease of metabolism and other physiological processes in the whole organism, as occurs in animals that experience torpor or hibernation, could contribute to increased survival after serious injury. Using a Bayesian network tool with transcriptomic data and chemical structure similarity assessments, we predicted that the Alzheimer's disease drug donepezil (DNP) could be a promising candidate for a small molecule drug that might induce a torpor-like state. This was confirmed in a screening study with Xenopus laevis tadpoles, a nonhibernator whole animal model. To improve the therapeutic performance of the drug and minimize its toxicity, we encapsulated DNP in a nanoemulsion formulated with low-toxicity materials. This formulation is composed of emulsified droplets <200 nm in diameter that contain 1.250 mM DNP, representing ≥95% encapsulation efficiency. The DNP nanoemulsion induced comparable torpor-like effects to those produced by the free drug in tadpoles, as indicated by reduced swimming motion, cardiac beating frequency, and oxygen consumption, but with an improved biodistribution. Use of the nanoemulsion resulted in a more controlled increase of DNP concentration in the whole organism compared to free DNP, and to a higher concentration in the brain, which reduced DNP toxicity and enabled induction of a longer torpor-like state that was fully reversible. These studies also demonstrate the potential use of Xenopus tadpoles as a high-throughput in vivo screen to assess the efficacy, biodistribution, and toxicity of drug-loaded nanocarriers.

Abstract
In this study, N, N '-bis {4- [(α-L- rhamnosyloxy) benzyl]} thiourea (PG-1), a phenolic glycoside compound was purified from Moringa seed. The PG-1 has attracted extensive attention due to its anti-cancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hypoglycemic properties. However, some of its physicochemical properties such as oral bioavailability has not been studied. Herein, a highly purified PG-1 was extracted and incorporated in multiple layered liposomes (PG-1-L) to avoid its burst release and enhance oral bioavailability. After appropriate characterization, it was discovered that the obtained PG-1-L was stable, homogeneous and well dispersed with the average particle size being 89.26 ± 0.23 nm. Importantly, the in vitro release and in vivo oral bioavailability of PG-1-L were significantly improved compared with PG-1. In addition, MTT results showed that compared with the free PG-1, PG-1-L displayed obvious inhibitory effect on the HepG2 cells, while the inhibitory effect on healthy non-malignant 3T6 and LO-2 cells was not significant, indicating that PG-1-L had high safety. In conclusion, PG-1-L can be used as a promising delivery system and an ideal novel approach to improve the oral bioavailability and anticancer activity of PG-1.

Abstract
The health benefits of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCn-3PUFA) intake have been well documented. However, currently, the consumption of oily fish (the richest dietary source of LCn-3PUFA) in the UK is far below the recommended level, and the low digestibility of LCn-3PUFA bulk oil-based supplements from triglyceride-based sources significantly impacts their bioavailability. LCn-3PUFA-rich microalgal oil offers a potential alternative for populations who do not consume oily fish, and nanoemulsions have the potential to increase LCn-3PUFA digestibility and bioavailability. The aims of this study were to produce stable algal oil-in-water nanoemulsions with ultrasonic technology to increase DHA digestibility, measured using an in vitro digestion model. A nanoemulsion of LCn-3PUFA algal oil was developed with 6% w/w emulsifiers: lecithin (LE) or an equal ratio of Tween 40 (3%) and lecithin (LTN) (3%), 50% w/w, algal oil and 44% w/w water using rotor-stator and ultrasound homogenization. The in vitro digestion experiments were conducted with a gastric and duodenal digestion model. The results showed the creation of nanoemulsions of LCn-3PUFA algal oils offers potentially significant increases in the bioavailability of DHA in the human body. The increase in digestibility can be attributed to the smaller particle size of the nanoemulsions, which allows for higher absorption in the digestive system. This showed that the creation of nanoemulsions of LCn-3PUFA algal oils offers a potentially significant increase in the bioavailability of DHA in the human body. The LE and LTN nanoemulsions had average droplet sizes of 0.340 ± 0.00 µm and 0.267 ± 0.00 µm, respectively, but the algal oil mix (sample created with same the components as the LTN nanoemulsion, hand mixed, not processed by rotor-stator and ultrasound homogenization) had an average droplet size of 73.6 ± 6.98 µm. The LTN algal oil nanoemulsion was stable in the gastric and duodenal phases without detectable destabilization; however, the LE nanoemulsion showed signs of oil phase separation in the gastric phase. Under the same conditions, the amount of DHA digested from the LTN nanoemulsion was 47.34 ± 3.14 mg/g, compared to 16.53 ± 0.45 mg/g from the algal oil mix, showing DHA digestibility from the LTN nanoemulsion was 2.86 times higher. The findings of this study contribute to the insight of in vitro DHA digestion under different conditions. The stability of the LTN nanoemulsion throughout digestion suggests it could be a promising delivery system for LCn-3PUFAs, such as DHA, in various food and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
Gamma-oryzanol (GO) is a bioactive compound that, due to its biological characteristics, can be added to a food matrix. However, the bioactive compound is difficult to incorporate due to its low solubility and stability. A nanoemulsion allows substances to be packaged in nanometric sizes, improving their bioavailability. In this work, a GO nanoemulsion was developed using high-energy techniques. The methodological process began with the formulation of the coarse emulsion, where the emulsifiers (sodium caseinate and citrus pectin), diluent (rice bran oil), and pH were varied to find the most stable formulation. The coarse emulsion was subjected to four high-energy techniques (conventional homogenization, high-pressure homogenization, ultra-high-pressure homogenization, and ultrasonication) to reduce the droplet size. A physical-stability test, rheological-behavior test, image analysis, and particle-size-and-distribution test were conducted to determine which was the best technique. The formulation with the highest stability (pH 5.3) was composed of 87% water, 6.1% sodium caseinate, 0.6% citrus pectin, 6.1% rice bran oil, and 0.2% GO. The ultrasonic treatment obtains the smallest particle size (30.1 ± 1 nm), and the high-pressure treatment obtains the greatest stability (TSI < 0.3), both at 0 and 7 days of storage. High-energy treatments significantly reduce the droplet size of the emulsion, with important differences between each technique.

Abstract
The global trend towards conscious consumption plays an important role in consumer preferences regarding both the composition and quality of food and packaging materials, including sustainable ones. The development of biodegradable active packaging materials could reduce both the negative impact on the environment due to a decrease in the use of oil-based plastics and the amount of synthetic preservatives. This review discusses relevant functional additives for improving the bioactivity of biopolymer-based films. Addition of plant, microbial, animal and organic nanoparticles into bio-based films is discussed. Changes in mechanical, transparency, water and oxygen barrier properties are reviewed. Since microbial and oxidative deterioration are the main causes of food spoilage, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of natural additives are discussed, including perspective ones for the development of biodegradable active packaging.

Abstract
Moderate non-covalent interaction of protein and polyphenols can improve the emulsifying property of protein itself. The corn protein hydrolysate (CPH) and tannic acid (TA) complex was successfully used to construct nanoemulsion for algal oil delivery. There has been no study on the feasibility of this nanoemulsion delivery system for other food functional components, for example, β-carotene (β-CE). CPH/TA complex-based nanoemulsion system for β-CE delivery was studied, focusing on the effect of β-CE content on the physicochemical stability of the nanoemulsions. The nanoemulsion delivery systems (dia. 150 nm) with low viscosity and good liquidity were easily fabricated by two-step emulsification. The nanoemulsions with high β-CE content (>71.5 μg/mL) significantly increased (p < .05) the emulsion droplet size. However, there was no significant (p > .05) effect of β-CE content on polydispersity index (PDI) and zeta potential of the nanoemulsions. The storage (30 days) experiment results demonstrated that the droplet size of the nanoemulsions with varying β-CE content increased slightly during storage. However, the PDI values showed a slightly decreasing trend. Zeta potentials of the nanoemulsions showed no noticeable change during storage. Moreover, after storage of 30 days, the retention ratios of β-CE were found to be up to 90%, which suggests an excellent protective effect for β-CE by the nanoemulsion systems. The CPH/TA complex stabilized nanoemulsions could aggregate in gastric condition, but the β-CE content did not have obvious effect on the digestive stability of the nanoemulsions. The CPH/TA complex could be employed as an emulsifier to construct a physicochemical stable nanoemulsion delivery system for lipophilic active components.

Abstract
Emulsion systems are extensively used in the food processing sector and the use of natural emulsifiers like proteins for stabilizing emulsion has been in demand from consumers due to increased awareness about the consumption of healthy food. Numerous methods are available for the preparation of emulsion, but ultrasound got more attention among common methods owing to its economical and environment-friendly characteristics. The physical effects caused by to bursting of the cavity bubble, result in reduced droplet size, thus forming an emulsion with appreciable stability. Ultrasound ameliorates the emulsifying characteristics of natural emulsifiers like protein and improves the storage stability of the emulsion by positively boosting the rheological, emulsifying characteristics, improving zeta potential, and reducing average droplet size. The stability of protein-based emulsion is affected by environmental stresses hence conjugate of protein with polysaccharide showed good emulsifying characteristics. However, the data on the effect of ultrasound parameters on emulsifier properties is lacking and there is a need to develop a sonication device that can carry out large-scale emulsification operation. The review covers the principles and mechanisms of ultrasound-assisted formation of protein-based and protein-based conjugate emulsions. Further, the effect of ultrasound on various characteristics of protein-based emulsion is also explored. This review will provide concise data to the researchers to extend their experiments in the area of ultrasound emulsification which will help in commercializing the technology at the industrial scale.

Abstract
Pasta, a globally popular dish, serves as a complete meal around the world. This research aims to improve the nutritional value of pasta by enriching it with vitamin E. Firstly, vitamin E and sesame oil were mixed in different ratios (1:10, 1:5, 10:10) and dissolved in an aqueous medium at 50 °C with different concentrations of Tween 80 (10 %, 20 %, 30 %). Coarse emulsions were formed by gradual addition of the oil phase to the aqueous phase, followed by equilibration using an Ultratrax mixer at 15,000 rpm for 5 min. The target nanoemulsions were then produced using an ultrasonic system. After 30 days of storage, the most stable nanoemulsions containing 10 % Tween 80 and a 1:10 ratio of vitamin E to sesame oil showed minimal changes. In addition, nanoemulsions with 10 % Tween 80 and a 10:10 ratio of vitamin E to sesame oil showed less turbidity than those with 20 % and 30 % Tween 80. Evaluation of enriched pasta for physical, chemical and sensory properties compared to non-enriched samples showed no significant differences in properties such as pH, ash, total solids, texture and colour characteristics (P < 0.05). Enriched pasta samples showed an increase in moisture content of 0.94 % and a decrease in weight loss of 2.13 % compared to the control, with improved brightness (L) and yellowness (b) due to the addition of nanoemulsion. Sensory evaluation showed higher scores for pasta samples enriched with nanoemulsions containing vitamin E compared to control samples. This pioneering study introduces nanoemulsion technology to improve the nutritional profile of pasta by enriching it with vitamin E. The research demonstrates the successful formulation of stable nanoemulsions and their positive effects on pasta properties, suggesting promising avenues for improving public health through innovative pasta enrichment methods.

Abstract
This study aimed to increase the stability and solubility of the Algerian Satureja hortensis L. (ASHO) essential oil through nanoencapsulation. Nanoemulsions of ASHO (MF-ASHEO) were developed to evaluate their antioxidant and antimicrobial potential, stability, and cytotoxicity using microfluidization at 150 MPa for five cycles. MF-ASHO showed 8 compounds (99.56%) vs ASHEO's 26 compounds (95.46%). Carvacrol increased to 94.51%, replacing γ-terpinene, which decreased to 0.43%. The MF-ASHEO nanoemulsion had a mean particle size of 41.72 nm, a monomodal size distribution pattern, a mean ζ-potential of -39.4 mV, and a polydispersity index (PDI) mean value of 0.291. Micrographs showed spherical nanoparticles with varying diameters in nm. ASHEO was more toxic than MF-ASHEO against HepG2, Vero, and WI-38, according to the MTT and WST-1 assays. ASHEO demonstrated antiradical and antibacterial activity and inhibited biofilm formation. It also had an enhanced antifungal effect and reduced mycotoxin production. The MF-ASHEO sample showed no activity except in reducing mycotoxin production, where it performed better than ASHEO. In silico and ADME results confirmed the inhibitory action of carvacrol on the key enzymes of the aflatoxin biosynthetic mechanism and the target proteins associated with bactericidal/bacteriostatic effects. The microfluidization process dramatically affects not only the oil's volatile content but also its biological activity.

Abstract
Nanoemulsions play a crucial role in various industries. However, their application often results in hazardous waste, posing significant risks to human health and the environment. Effective management and separation of waste nanoemulsions requires special attention and effort. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of waste nanoemulsions, covering their sources, characteristics, and suitable treatment technologies, intending to mitigate their environmental impact. This study examines the evolution of nanoemulsions from beneficial products to hazardous wastes, provides an overview of the production processes, fate, and hazards of waste nanoemulsions, and highlights the critical characteristics that affect their stability. The latest advancements in separating waste nanoemulsions for recovering oil and reusable water resources are also presented, providing a comprehensive comparison and evaluation of the current treatment techniques. This review addresses the significant challenges in nanoemulsion treatment, provides insights into future research directions, and offers valuable implications for the development of more effective strategies to mitigate the hazards associated with waste nanoemulsions.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd), as the most prevalent heavy metal contaminant poses serious risks to plants, humans, and the environment. The ubiquity of this toxic metal is continuously increasing due to the rapid discharge of industrial and mining effluents and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as a novel strategy to alleviate Cd toxicity. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have become the most important NPs used to mitigate the toxicity of abiotic stresses and improve crop productivity. The plants quickly absorb Cd, which subsequently disrupts plant physiological and biochemical processes and increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which causes the oxidation of cellular structures and significant growth losses. Besides this, Cd toxicity also disrupts leaf osmotic pressure, nutrient uptake, membrane stability, chlorophyll synthesis, and enzyme activities, leading to a serious reduction in growth and biomass productivity. Though plants possess an excellent defense mechanism to counteract Cd toxicity, this is not enough to counter higher concentrations of Cd toxicity. Applying Zn-NPs has proven to have significant potential in mitigating the toxic effects of Cd. ZnO-NPs improve chlorophyll synthesis, photosynthetic efficiency, membrane stability, nutrient uptake, and gene expression, which can help to counter toxic effects of Cd stress. Additionally, ZnO-NPs also help to reduce Cd absorption and accumulation in plants, and the complex relationship between ZnO-NPs, osmolytes, hormones, and secondary metabolites plays an important role in Cd tolerance. Thus, this review concentrates on exploring the diverse mechanisms by which ZnO nanoparticles can alleviate Cd toxicity in plants. In the end, this review has identified various research gaps that need addressing to ensure the promising future of ZnO-NPs in mitigating Cd toxicity. The findings of this review contribute to gaining a deeper understanding of the role of ZnO-NPs in combating Cd toxicity to promote safer and sustainable crop production by remediating Cd-polluted soils. This also allows for the development of eco-friendly approaches to remediate Cd-polluted soils to improve soil fertility and environmental quality.

Abstract
Over the years, consumer awareness of proper, healthy eating has increased significantly, but the consumption of fruits and vegetables remains too low. Smoothie drinks offer a convenient way to supplement daily diets with servings of fruits and vegetables. These ready-to-eat beverages retain the nutritional benefits of the raw ingredients from which they are made. Furthermore, they cater to the growing demand for quick and nutritious meal options. To meet consumer expectations, current trends in the food market are shifting towards natural, high-quality products with minimal processing and extended shelf life. Food manufacturers are increasingly aiming to reduce or eliminate synthetic preservatives, replacing them with plant-based alternatives. Plant-based preservatives are particularly appealing to consumers, who often view them as natural and organic substitutes for conventional preservatives. Essential oils, known for their antibacterial and antifungal properties, are effective against the microorganisms and fungi present in fruit and vegetable smoothies. However, the strong taste and aroma of essential oils can be a significant drawback, as the concentrations needed for microbiological stability are often unpalatable to consumers. Encapsulation of essential oils in nanoemulsions offers a promising and effective solution to these challenges, allowing for their use in food production without compromising sensory qualities.

Abstract
Low solubility and chemical instability are the main problems with insoluble bioactives. Lignin, with its exceptional biological properties and amphiphilicity, holds promise as a delivery system material. In this study, glycerol esters were incorporated into alkali lignin (AL) through ether and ester bonds, resulting in the successful synthesis of three hydrophobically modified alkali lignins (AL-OA, AL-OGL, and AL-SAN-OGL). Subsequently, lignin composite nanoparticles (LNPs@BC) encapsulating β-carotene were prepared using antisolvent and sonication techniques. The encapsulation rates were determined to be 37.69 ± 2.21%, 84.01 ± 5.55%, 83.82 ± 5.23%, and 83.11 ± 5.85% for LNP@BC-1, LNP@BC-2, LNP@BC-3, and LNP@BC-4, respectively, with AL, AL-OA, AL-OGL, and AL-SAN-OGL serving as the wall materials under optimized preparation conditions. The antioxidant properties and UV-absorbing capacity of the four lignins were characterized, demonstrating their efficacy in enhancing the oxygen and photostability of β-carotene. Following 6 h of UV irradiation, LNP@BC-4 exhibited a retention rate of 83.03 ± 2.85% for β-carotene, while storage under light-protected conditions at 25 °C for 7 days retained 73.33 ± 7.62% of β-carotene. Furthermore, the encapsulated β-carotene demonstrated enhanced thermal and storage stability. In vitro release experiments revealed superior stability of LNPs@BC in simulated gastric fluid (SGF), with β-carotene retention exceeding 77% in both LNP@BC-3 and LNP@BC-4. LNP@BC-4 exhibited the highest bioaccessibility in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) at 46.96 ± 0.80%, that LNP@BC-1 only achieved 10.87 ± 0.90%. The enzymatic responsiveness of AL-OGL and AL-SAN-OGL was confirmed. Moreover, LNPs@BC exhibited no cytotoxicity toward L929 cells and demonstrated excellent hemocompatibility. In summary, this study introduces a novel enzyme-responsive modified lignin that has promising applications in the fields of food, biomedicine, and animal feed.

Abstract
Composite natural emulsifiers such as whey protein isolate (WPI) and chitosan (CS) are commonly used in Pickering emulsions to address the effect of thermal deformation of proteins before complexation with CS and heating after complexation. In this study, the properties of WPI and CS composites were investigated by complexing CS with either unmodified WPI or thermally denatured WPI (DWPI). Three types of composite particles were prepared, WPI-CS, DWPI-CS, and D(WPI-CS). Atomic force microscopy revealed that the composite particles formed larger aggregates with increased contour size and surface roughness compared to CS and WPI, whereas the interfacial tension decreased, indicating improved emulsifying abilities. Fourier-transform infrared analysis revealed differences in the hydrogen bonds between CS and WPI/DWPI. All three composite particles formed stable emulsions with droplet sizes of 20.00 ± 0.15, 27.80 ± 0.35, and 16.77 ± 0.51 μm, respectively. Thermal stability experiments revealed that the curcumin emulsion stabilized with WPI-CS and DWPI-CS exhibited relatively better thermal stability than that stabilized with D(WPI-CS). In vitro experiments results indicated that the bioaccessibility of the curcumin emulsion stabilized with WPI-CS was 61.18 ± 0.16%, significantly higher than that of the emulsions prepared with the other two composite particles (p < 0.05). This study will enable the customized design of WPI composite-based Pickering emulsions for application in the food and nutrition industries.

Abstract
Nowadays food safety and protection are a growing concern for food producers and food industry. The stability of food-grade materials is key in food processing and shelf life. Pickering emulsions (PEs) have gained significant attention in food regimes owing to their stability enhancement of food specimens. PE can be developed by high and low-energy methods. The use of PE in the food sector is completely safe as it uses solid biodegradable particles to stabilize the oil in water and it also acts as an excellent carrier of essential oils (EOs). EOs are useful functional ingredients, the inclusion of EOs in the packaging film or coating formulation significantly helps in the improvement of the shelf life of the packed food item. The highly volatile nature, limited solubility and ease of oxidation in light of EOs restricts their direct use in packaging. In this context, the use of PEs of EOs is suitable to overcome most of the challenges, Therefore, recently there have been many papers published on PEs of EOs including active packaging film and coatings and the obtained results are promising. The current review amalgamates these studies to inform about the chemistry of PEs followed by types of stabilizers, factors affecting the stability and different high and low-energy manufacturing methods. Finally, the review summarizes the recent advancement in PEs-added packaging film and their application in the enhancement of shelf life of food.

Abstract
A better understanding of how emulsifier type could differently influence the behavior of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) under the gastrointestinal digestion process, as well as at the cellular level, is of utmost importance for the NLC-based formulations' optimization and risk assessment in the food field. In this study, NLC composed by fully hydrogenated soybean and high-oleic sunflower oils were prepared using soy lecithin (NLC Lβ) or Tween 80 (NLC Tβ) as an emulsifier. β-Carotene was entrapped within NLC developed as a promising strategy to overcome β-carotene's low bioavailability and stability. The effect of emulsifier type on the digestibility of β-carotene-loaded NLC was evaluated using an in vitro dynamic digestion model mimicking peristalsis motion. The influence of β-carotene-loaded NLC on cell viability was assessed using Caco-2 cells in vitro. NLC Tβ remained stable in the gastric compartment, presenting particle size (PS) similar to the initial NLC (PS: 245.68 and 218.18 nm, respectively), while NLC Lβ showed lower stability (PS > 1000 nm) in stomach and duodenum phases. NLC Tβ also provided high β-carotene protection and delivery capacity (i.e., β-carotene bioaccessibility increased 10-fold). Based on the results of digestion studies, NLC Tβ has shown better physical stability during the passage through the in vitro dynamic gastrointestinal system than NLC Lβ. Moreover, the developed NLC did not compromise cell viability up to 25 µg/mL of β-carotene. Thus, the NLC developed proved to be a biocompatible structure and able to incorporate and protect β-carotene for further food applications. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The findings of this study hold significant implications for industrial applications in terms of developing nanostructured lipid carriers from natural raw materials widely available and used to produce other lipid-based products in the food industry, as an alternative to synthetic ones. In this respect, the β-carotene-loaded NLC developed in this study would find a great industrial application in the food industry, which is in constant search to develop functional foods capable of increasing the bioavailability of bioactive compounds.

Abstract
In the contemporary era, heightened emphasis on health and safety has emerged as a paramount concern among individuals with food. The concepts of "natural" and "green" have progressively asserted dominance in the food consumption market. Consequently, through continuous exploration and development, an escalating array of natural bioactive ingredients is finding application in both nutrition delivery and the broader food industry. Chlorogenic acid (CGA), a polyphenolic compound widely distributed in various plants in nature, has garnered significant attention. Abundant research underscores CGA's robust biological activity, showcasing notable preventive and therapeutic efficacy across diverse diseases. This article commences with a comprehensive overview, summarizing the dietary sources and primary biological activities of CGA. These encompass antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-cancer, and neuroprotective activities. Next, a comprehensive overview of the current research on nutrient delivery systems incorporating CGA is provided. This exploration encompasses nanoparticle, liposome, hydrogel, and emulsion delivery systems. Additionally, the article explores the latest applications of CGA in the food industry. Serving as a cutting-edge theoretical foundation, this paper contributes to the design and development of CGA in the realms of nutrition delivery and the food industry. Finally, the article presents informed speculations and considerations for the future development of CGA.

Abstract
Over the past decades, dynamic high-pressure treatment (DHPT) executed by high-pressure homogenization (HPH) or microfluidization (DHPM) technology has received humongous research attention for starch macromolecule modification. However, the studies on starch multi-level structure alterations by DHPT have received inadequate attention. Furthermore, no review comprehensively covers all aspects of DHPT, explicitly addressing the combined effects of both technologies (HPH or DHPM) on starch's structural and functional characteristics. Hence, this review focused on recent advancements concerning the influences of DHPT on the starch multi-level structure and techno-functional properties. Intense mechanical actions induced by DHPT, such as high shear and impact forces, hydrodynamic cavitation, instantaneous pressure drops, and turbulence, altered the multi-level structure of starch for a short duration. The DHPT reduces the starch molecular weight and degree of branching, destroys short-range ordered and long-range crystalline structure, and degrades lamellar structure, resulting in partial gelatinization of starch granules. These structural changes influenced their techno-functional properties like swelling power and solubility, freeze-thaw stability, emulsifying properties, retrogradation rate, thermal properties, rheological and pasting, and digestibility. Processing conditions such as pressure level, the number of passes, inlet temperature, chamber geometry used, starch types, and their concentration may influence the above changes. Moreover, dynamic high-pressure treatment could form starch-fatty acids/polyphenol complexes. Finally, we discuss the food system applications of DHPT-treated starches and flours, and some limitations.

Abstract
Antarctic krill oil (AKO) is highly sought after by consumers and the food industry due to its richness in a variety of nutrients and physiological activities. However, current extraction methods are not sufficient to better extract AKO and its nutrients, and AKO is susceptible to lipid oxidation during processing and storage, leading to nutrient loss and the formation of off-flavors and toxic compounds. The development of various extraction methods and encapsulation systems for AKO to improve oil yield, nutritional value, antioxidant capacity, and bioavailability has become a research hotspot. This review summarizes the research progress of AKO from extraction to encapsulation system construction. The AKO extraction mechanism, technical parameters, oil yield and composition of solvent extraction, aqueous enzymatic extraction, supercritical/subcritical extraction, and three-liquid-phase salting-out extraction system are described in detail. The principles, choice of emulsifier/wall materials, preparation methods, advantages and disadvantages of four common encapsulation systems for AKO, namely micro/nanoemulsions, microcapsules, liposomes and nanostructured lipid carriers, are summarized. These four encapsulation systems are characterized by high encapsulation efficiency, low production cost, high bioavailability and high antioxidant capacity. Depending on the unique advantages and conditions of different encapsulation methods, as well as consumer demand for health and nutrition, different products can be developed. However, existing AKO encapsulation systems lack relevant studies on digestive absorption and targeted release, and the single product category of commercially available products limits consumer choice. In conjunction with clinical studies of AKO encapsulation systems, the development of encapsulation systems for special populations should be a future research direction.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests a beneficial role of vitamin D (VitD) supplementation in addressing the widespread VitD deficiency, but currently used VitD3 formulations present low bioavailability and toxicity constrains. Hence, poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs), solid-lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) were investigated to circumvent these issues. PLGA NPs prepared by emulsification or nanoprecipitation presented 74 or 200 nm, and association efficiency (AE) of 68 % and 17 %, respectively, and a rapid burst release of VitD3. Both SLN and NLCs presented higher polydispersity and larger NPs size, around 500 nm, which could be reduced to around 200 nm by use of hot high-pressure homogenization in the case of NLCs. VitD3 was efficiently loaded in both SLNs and NLCs with an AE of 82 and 99 %, respectively. While SLNs showed burst release, NLCs allowed a sustained release of VitD3 for nearly one month. Furthermore, NLCs showed high stability with maintenance of VitD3 loading for up to one month at 4 °C and no cytotoxic effects on INS-1E cells up to 72 h. A trending increase (around 30 %) on glucose-dependent insulin secretion was observed by INS-1E cells pre-treated with VitD3. This effect was consistently observed in the free form and after loading on NLCs. Overall, this work contributed to further elucidation on a suitable delivery system for VitD3 and on the effects of this metabolite on β cell function.

Abstract
Perfluorocarbon (PFC) nanodroplets (NDs) are expanding in a wide range of applications in biotechnology and nanotechnology. Their efficacy in biological systems is significantly influenced by their size uniformity and stability within bioelectrolyte contexts. Presently, methods for creating monodisperse, highly concentrated, and well-stabilized PFC NDs under harsh conditions using low energy consumption methods have not been thoroughly developed, and their stability has not been sufficiently explored. This gap restricts their applicability for advanced medical interventions in tissues with high pH levels and various electrolytic conditions. To tackle these challenges and to circumvent potential toxicity from surface stabilizers, we have conducted an in-depth investigation into the formation and stability of uncoated perfluorohexane (PFH) NDs, which were synthesized by using a low-energy consumption solvent exchange technique, across complex electrolyte compositions or a broad spectrum of pH levels. The results indicated that low concentrations of low-valent electrolyte ions facilitate the nucleation of NDs and consistently accelerate Ostwald ripening over an extended period. Conversely, high concentrations of highly valent electrolyte ions inhibit nucleation and decelerate the ripening process over time. Given the similarities between the properties of NDs and nanobubbles, we propose a potential stabilization mechanism. Electrolytes influence the Ostwald ripening of NDs by adjusting the adsorption and distribution of ions on the NDs' surface, modifying the thickness of the electric double layer, and fine-tuning the energy barrier between droplets. These insights enable precise control over the stability of PFC NDs through the meticulous adjustment of the surrounding electrolyte composition. This offers an effective preparation method and a theoretical foundation for employing bare PFC NDs in physiological settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Natural antioxidants, such as grape pomace polyphenols, can be extracted by a surfactant-based green technology and incorporated into various emulsions. Therefore, this work aimed to investigate the physical stability and rheological characteristics of oil-in-water emulsions stabilized with poloxamer 407 (P407) and its mixtures with the low-molecular-mass surfactants Brij S20 (BS20) and Tween 60 (T60). Also, the influence of polyphenolic grape pomace extracts on the physical stability and rheological characteristics of the emulsions was examined. METHODS Grape pomace polyphenols were extracted by aqueous solutions of P407 and BS20/P407 and T60/P407 mixtures. Two different types of oil-in-water emulsions were examined: emulsions prepared with pure surfactants and emulsions prepared with surfactant-based polyphenol extracts of grape pomace. Both types contained 20% sunflower oil. Characterization of the emulsions comprised droplet size evaluation, rheology characteristics and creaming stability. RESULTS All the emulsions showed shear-thinning flow, while the rheological characteristics and creaming instability depended on the proportion of P407 in the emulsifier mixtures. Incorporation of grape pomace extracts had no effect on the investigated properties of the emulsions. CONCLUSION The presence of extracted polyphenols in emulsifier mixtures had no significant effects on the emulsions' physico-chemical characteristics and stability. Therefore, the investigated emulsions can be considered suitable carriers for polyphenol-rich extracts.

Abstract
Nanomaterials in the food industry are used as food additives, and the main function of these food additives is to improve food qualities including texture, flavor, color, consistency, preservation, and nutrient bioavailability. This review aims to provide an overview of the distribution, fate, and environmental and health impacts of food additive nanomaterials in soil and aquatic ecosystems. Some of the major nanomaterials in food additives include titanium dioxide, silver, gold, silicon dioxide, iron oxide, and zinc oxide. Ingestion of food products containing food additive nanomaterials via dietary intake is considered to be one of the major pathways of human exposure to nanomaterials. Food additive nanomaterials reach the terrestrial and aquatic environments directly through the disposal of food wastes in landfills and the application of food waste-derived soil amendments. A significant amount of ingested food additive nanomaterials (> 90 %) is excreted, and these nanomaterials are not efficiently removed in the wastewater system, thereby reaching the environment indirectly through the disposal of recycled water and sewage sludge in agricultural land. Food additive nanomaterials undergo various transformation and reaction processes, such as adsorption, aggregation-sedimentation, desorption, degradation, dissolution, and bio-mediated reactions in the environment. These processes significantly impact the transport and bioavailability of nanomaterials as well as their behaviour and fate in the environment. These nanomaterials are toxic to soil and aquatic organisms, and reach the food chain through plant uptake and animal transfer. The environmental and health risks of food additive nanomaterials can be overcome by eliminating their emission through recycled water and sewage sludge.

Abstract
As a natural flavoring agent, vanilla essential oil has a special aroma and flavor, but its volatility and instability limit its value. Therefore, in this study, vanilla essential oil was compounded with cinnamon essential oil to prepare nano-emulsions (composite nano-emulsions called C/VT and C/VM), and the stability of the composite essential oil emulsions was investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that the nano-emulsions were spherical in shape and some flocs were observed in C/VM and C/VT. The results showed that the average droplet sizes of C/VM and C/VT increased only by 14.99% and 15.01% after heating at 100 °C for 20 min, and the average droplet sizes were less than 120 nm after 24 days of storage at 25 °C. Possibly due to the presence of reticulated flocs, which have a hindering effect on the movement of individual droplets, the instability indices of C/VM and C/VT were reduced by 34.9% and 39.08%, respectively, in comparison to the instability indices of C/VM and C/VT. In addition, the results of antioxidant experimental studies showed that the presence of composite essential oil flocs had no significant effect on the antioxidant capacity. These results indicate that the improved stability of the composite essential oil nano-emulsions is conducive to broadening the application of vanilla essential oil emulsions.

Abstract
The maintenance of the intestinal barrier is crucial for the overall balance of the gut and the organism. Dysfunction of the intestinal barrier is closely associated with intestinal diseases. In recent years, due to the increased presence of nanoparticles (NPs) in the human diet, there has been a growing concern regarding the safety and potential impact of these NPs on gastrointestinal health. The interactions between food-derived NPs and the intestinal barrier are numerous. This review provides an introduction to the structure and function of the intestinal barrier along with a comprehensive summary of the interactions between food NPs and the intestinal barrier. Additionally, we highlight the potential connection between the food NPs-induced dysfunction of the intestinal barrier and inflammatory bowel disease. Finally, we discuss the enhancement of food NPs on the repair of the intestinal barrier damage and the nutrients absorption. This review holds significant importance in furthering our understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of food-derived NPs on the intestinal barrier.
