Abstract
The Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ) assesses two distinct dimensions of meaning in life: presence of meaning and search for meaning. The MLQ is the most widely used instrument for measuring meaning in life, yet there is a limited variety of validity evidence on the originally proposed two-factor confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) solution. In this light, the present research examined, across five studies (total N = 3,205), several aspects of the MLQ's validity and tested cross-gender and cross-national measurement invariance. We also examined the usefulness of the exploratory structural equation model (ESEM) of the MLQ as an alternative to the standard CFA model. The results obtained provide evidence for: (a) the validity (structural, convergent, concurrent, and incremental) of the MLQ ESEM factors; (b) full scalar invariance of the MLQ ESEM model across gender and partial measurement invariance across four countries; and (c) similar cross-national relationships between MLQ ESEM factors and measures of depression and life satisfaction. The present research provides support for the value of applying the ESEM framework in overcoming limitations of the CFA model when examining evidence on the MLQ's validity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Despite long-standing assumptions that a sense of purpose in life and goal pursuit are mutually supportive, empirical evidence of their reciprocity remains deficient. In the context of a unique out-of-school time program that empowers youth to pursue passions through self-driven learning, we examined whether purpose and one aspect of goal pursuit-perceptions of goal progress-work together to sustain themselves and each other over time. METHOD Adolescents (N = 321) completed daily surveys throughout program enrollment (Menrollment = 69.09 days). Through dynamic structural equation modeling, we derived within-person patterns of day-to-day prediction as well as individual differences in these patterns. RESULTS We found purpose and perceived goal progress exhibited significant daily inertia (i.e., autoregressive prediction) and reciprocity (i.e., cross-lagged prediction) at the within-person level. We also found initial evidence suggesting (a) tighter reciprocity was related to greater perceived goal progress overall and (b) people with greater purpose inertia may rely less on making goal progress to sustain momentum. CONCLUSIONS With evidence of daily purpose-progress reciprocity, the field can look forward to replicating this work in other contexts, diving deeper into interesting patterns of within-person dynamics, and developing interventions to support youth striving.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interventions based on the Veterans Health Administration's (VHA) Whole Health (WH) initiative may be beneficial for veterans with Gulf War Illness (GWI) through specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and timed (SMART) goal setting and monitoring of perceived goal attainment with the Personal Health Inventory (PHI). OBJECTIVES This secondary analysis of 2 randomized controlled trials focused on (1) categorizing SMART goals set during a wellness intervention based on the VHA's WH approach to identify goals most relevant for veterans with GWI and chronic pain and (2) descriptively examining the PHI over a course of treatment to assess its preliminary sensitivity to change. Also, changes in PHI for those who engaged in the intervention in-person versus remotely were compared. SUBJECTS Participants were 49 veterans with GWI and chronic pain who received a 12-week, 24-session group wellness intervention delivered in-person or remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS SMART goal themes mapped onto the 8 areas of self-care presented in the WH program's circle of health with high categorical adherence. Most participants set goals in categories for working the body, food and drink, and personal development. The wellness intervention was related to improvements in perceived goal attainment as measured by the PHI in both in-person and remote participants, which indicates that the PHI may be sensitive to change over time. CONCLUSIONS These preliminary findings set the stage for future research on wellness interventions for veterans with GWI and chronic pain and the measurement of whole-person outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with engagement in meaningful activity among residents with dementia in assisted living. We hypothesized that greater functional independence, less pain, and lower behavioral and psychological symptom severity would be associated with higher engagement in meaningful activity after controlling for residents' age, gender, comorbidities, and cognition. Understanding factors associated with engagement in meaningful activity can help to inform strategies for optimizing engagement among residents with dementia in assisted living. METHOD This descriptive study used baseline data from a randomized controlled trial, Meaningful Activity for Managing Behavioral Symptoms of Distress (MAC-4-BSD). Linear regression was used to examine factors associated with engagement in meaningful activity. RESULTS A total of 71 residents from 5 assisted living settings were included in the sample. Most participants were female (n = 52, 73%), White (n = 62, 87%), and mean age was 85 years old (SD = 8.2). Controlling for age, gender, comorbidities, and cognition, pain was significantly associated with engagement in meaningful activity (b= -2.09, p < 0.05). There were no associations found between function and behavioral symptoms with engagement in meaningful activity. CONCLUSION Findings from this study show that pain is a significant factor that is negatively associated with residents' engagement in meaningful activity. Ongoing research is needed to help improve pain management for residents with dementia in assisted living and support their engagement in meaningful activity.

Abstract
The main objective of this protocol is to understand the effectiveness of the use of a mobile application (OcupApp) to generate a personal self-analysis about meaningful activities in a population of adults aged between 50 and 70 years with low or moderate depression/anxiety. A randomised study will be carried out comparing the effects of the use of the OcupApp application with a control intervention on health-related quality of life, mental health, frequency of participation on meaningful activities, and perceived occupational balance. This is the first study to use occupational self-analysis in m-health to improve occupational balance, mental health, frequency of participation in meaningful activities and health-related quality of life. The app was co-created with a population whose characteristics are similar to those of the target users, and it was tested in both the intervention itself and the presentation, thus it is expected to be effective. Abstract
PURPOSE After completion of curative cancer treatment patients enter the re-entry phase, which is characterized by the task to pick up life again. While having to resume their former roles, patients experience the loss of normality and face existential concerns. A sense of meaning and purpose may help in dealing with changes in life and existential concerns. The aim of this study is to gain insight in the meaning-making process of patients treated for breast cancer or melanoma in the re-entry phase in order to develop an intervention to support picking up life after a long treatment process including systemic treatment. METHODS We conducted six focus groups with 16 patients (11 breast cancer and five melanoma) to explore their experiences, challenges, and sources of meaning during the re-entry phase. The re-entry phase was defined as the point from completion of surgical and systemic treatment (except for hormonal therapy) up to 18 months in remission. A thematic content analysis was performed by two researchers. RESULTS We identified four themes pertaining to patients' use of sources of meaning in the meaning-making process: (1) use of existing, helpful sources; (2) distress due to impacted sources; (3) search for new sources; and (4) use of adapted or new sources. When patients drew upon existing sources of meaning that had been impacted by cancer and the aftermath of treatment, they experienced distress. This could instigate a search resulting in adapted, strengthened, or new sources of meaning. CONCLUSIONS Meaning-making in the re-entry phase is a versatile process involving the use of existing sources of meaning, and a search for, or use of new, strengthened, or adapted sources of meaning. An intervention increasing patients' awareness of their sources of meaning might strengthen the meaning-making process of patients treated for breast cancer or melanoma.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between engagement in meaningful activities and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), including agitation, apathy, irritability, and depression among 71 assisted living (AL) residents with moderate to severe dementia. This secondary analysis used baseline data from a randomized controlled trial, Meaningful Activity for Managing Behavioral Symptoms of Distress (MAC-4-BSD) in five AL communities. The Engagement in Meaningful Activities Scale and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire were completed. Logistic regression was used to compare those with and without each BPSD symptom of interest on engagement in meaningful activities while controlling for age, sex, and cognitive impairment. On average, participants were 85 years old, white, females. Perceived engagement in meaningful activities was significantly associated with decreased odds of having agitation (OR=0.94, 95 % CI [.88-0.99]) but not with apathy, depression, or irritability. Engagement in meaningful activities may help reduce agitation among AL residents.

Abstract
Introduction This study examines the influence of teacher job embeddedness, collective efficacy, and work meaningfulness on the psychological well-being of Chinese teachers. The focus is on understanding how these constructs contribute to teacher well-being through a mixed-methods approach. Methods A two-stage structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis was conducted using quantitative data collected from 406 in-service Chinese teachers. The study also incorporated a qualitative phase involving digital ethnography within online teaching communities to provide deeper insights into teachers' experiences. Results The quantitative analysis revealed significant positive direct effects of job embeddedness, collective efficacy, and work meaningfulness on psychological well-being, with work meaningfulness showing the strongest effect. The mediating role of work meaningfulness partially explained the relationships between job embeddedness, collective efficacy, and teacher well-being. The qualitative findings supported and expanded upon these results, emphasizing the role of a supportive school community and strong administrative leadership. Discussion The results suggest that enhancing job embeddedness, collective efficacy, and work meaningfulness can significantly contribute to teachers' psychological well-being. These findings provide actionable insights for school leaders and policymakers in the Chinese educational system to foster environments that promote teacher well-being.

Abstract
Resilience during stressful life events is a priority for administering the most client-centered care as possible. Occupational therapy practitioners have the unique opportunity to support resilience through promoting meaningful participation. The current study aims to understand the associations between meaningful activity engagement, resilience, and stressful life events. We specifically focused on answering if meaningful participation mediates the relationship between stressful life events and resilience. 492 participants from a non-clinical convenience sample of Amazon's MTurk completed the study. Participants completed an online survey and reported their experiences of stressful life events, resilience, well-being, and meaningful participation. We used SPSS and PROCESS to analyze our data. Stressful event severity and resilience were inversely related. When accounting for the effect of meaningful participation, the relationship became non-significant, indicating evidence of mediation. Implications: Focusing on measuring meaningful participation may be worth studying in further research.

Abstract
Although rapid economic growth can produce various positive outcomes, the fast-paced society that inevitably accompanies it often results in longer working hours and higher stress levels, leading to reduced participation in sport activities among employees. To better understand this phenomenon, we aimed to explore the constraints and experiences of adult workers. We collected data from adult workers in Singapore who desired to participate in sport activities but were unable to do so due to various constraints. A total of 10 individuals were purposefully selected for interviews. This study identified four key themes: (a) factors causing the reduction of sport participation opportunities, (b) changes in sport activities and satisfaction, (c) nostalgic feelings associated with sport activities, and (d) the role of nostalgia in enhancing sport involvement. The findings of this study suggest the possibility of adapting the conceptual model of nostalgia to sport activities, as well as identifying four factors that hinder employees from engaging in sport activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Loneliness is a prevalent and alarming issue among older adults that requires effective interventions. While randomised controlled trials have been commonly undertaken to explore reduction in loneliness, there is a growing recognition that a comprehensive treatment strategy involving multiple interventions may yield better outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to develop and identify a two-stage adaptive intervention that combines telephone-delivered behavioural activation (Tele-BA) and mindfulness techniques (Tele-MF) to reduce loneliness in older adults in Hong Kong. METHODS A Sequential, Multiple Assignment, Randomised Trial (SMART) design will be adopted. 244 lonely older adults will be recruited from the community and randomly assigned to either one of the 4-week two-stage, embedded adaptive interventions involving different sequences and dosages of Tele-BA and Tele-MF (eg, 4 weeks of Tele-BA followed by booster sessions for responders or 4 weeks of Tele-BA followed by 4 weeks of Tele-BA with motivational component or 4 weeks of Tele-MF for non-responders) based on a set of decision rules. The primary outcome will be loneliness measured by the Revised University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale. Secondary outcomes, such as De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, perceived stress, sleep quality and depressive and anxiety symptoms, will be assessed. Adhering to the intention-to-treat principles, the data will be analysed using linear mixed models. The findings may have implications for the development of psychosocial adaptive interventions involving BA and MF to reduce loneliness and improve well-being among older adults in Hong Kong using the SMART design. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval was obtained by the Human Research Ethics Committee at The Education University of Hong Kong (reference: 2022-2023-0117). Abstract
PURPOSE Intellectual disability is one of the neurodevelopmental disorders. Studies indicated that depression and anxiety are the most prevalent emotional problems among the people with intellectual disability. The aim of this study was to investigate the utility of behavioral activation therapy in addressing emotional problems of two depressed students with borderline intellectual disability. METHOD This study is a single-subject design with multiple baseline and one month follow-up. Two students with borderline intelligence underwent behavioral activation therapy for 12 sessions. Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Oxford Happiness Inventory and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale were used. Data were analyzed using visual inspection of graphed data, changes in trends, improvement percentage and effect size. FINDINGS The findings of this study support the utility of behavioral activation therapy in addressing the emotional problems of two depressed students with borderline intellectual disability. CONCLUSION Behavioral activation therapy has had favorable outcomes in reducing depression and anxiety in depressed students with borderline intellectual disabilities.

Abstract
The 'Things You Do' encompass five types of actions that are strongly associated with good mental health: Healthy Thinking, Meaningful Activities, Goals and Plans, Healthy Habits, and Social Connections. Ultra-brief interventions which increase how often people perform these actions may decrease depression and anxiety. A two-arm randomized controlled trial (N = 349) compared an unguided ultra-brief intervention based on the 'Things You Do' against a waitlist control. The intervention included one online module, two practice guides, and four weeks of daily text messages. The primary timepoint was 5-weeks post-baseline. The intervention resulted in moderate reductions in depression (d = 0.51) and anxiety (d = 0.55) alongside moderate increases in the frequency of Things You Do actions (d = 0.54), compared to controls. No significant change in number of days out of role or life satisfaction were observed. Treatment completion was high (92 %), most participants reported being satisfied with the treatment (66 %), and improvements were maintained at 3-month follow-up. This study demonstrated that an automated ultra-brief 'Things You Do' intervention resulted in clinically significant reductions in depression and anxiety. Ultra-brief interventions may provide a scalable solution to support individuals who are unlikely to engage in longer forms of psychological treatment.

Abstract
Anxiety and depressive disorders are highly prevalent and a leading cause of disability. Understanding how symptoms develop could lead to new preventive and clinical interventions. This pilot study examined whether systematically restricting specific behaviours (target actions) associated with good psychological health would increase psychological symptoms in healthy participants, and whether resuming those actions would reduce symptoms to baseline levels. Twelve adults participated in a series of N-of-1 trials comprising baseline (A), restriction (B) and recovery (C) phases. Outcomes were assessed weekly using measures of depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), and a validated 15-item measure of target actions (Big 5). Symptoms of depression and anxiety increased significantly from Phase A to Phase B and returned to baseline by the end of Phase C. Increased symptoms during Phase B were only observed in participants who restricted actions by more than 25%. Symptom increases were evident within 2 weeks of restriction, but most participants appeared to take longer to recover to baseline levels. This study demonstrates that reducing the frequency of specific actions may increase symptoms of anxiety and depression, which is reversed when those actions are resumed. This contributes to our understanding of the aetiology, maintenance, and recovery from depression, anxiety, and possibly other disorders.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the relationship between positive perceptions of aging, purpose in life, and life satisfaction in older adults. It was hypothesized that purpose in life mediates the relationship between positive perceptions of one's aging and life satisfaction. This hypothesis was tested in a sample of older American adults from four waves of the Health and Retirement Study collected at 4-year intervals between 2008 and 2020 (N = 11,546, mean age in 2008 = 62.772). The random intercept cross-lagged panel model was used to separate within-person and between-person sources of variance. Mediation was tested at the longitudinal within-person level and was supported. Results suggest that an increase in positive perceptions of aging is associated with a future increase in purpose in life, which in turn is associated with higher future levels of life satisfaction. The findings inform interventions promoting positive aging, purpose, and life satisfaction in older adults.

Abstract
RATIONALE Each day, more than 10 Canadians die by suicide. Each suicide leaves entire communities to manage the traumatic aftermath of this loss. Individuals bereaved by suicide loss are at a higher risk of experiencing negative mental health outcomes. Current research suggests that engagement in meaningful activities may be an avenue to protecting mental health. It is important to understand if this is also the case for those experiencing bereavement post suicide loss. To date, there has not been a synthesis of the literature examining suicide loss and the nature and extent of engagement in meaningful activities post loss. OBJECTIVES 1) To describe the nature and extent of the peer-reviewed suicide loss and bereavement literature related to engagement in meaningful activities; and 2) to identify facilitators and barriers that may impact engagement in meaningful activities post loss. METHODS This paper describes a scoping review protocol that will be completed using stages identified by Arksey and O'Malley and updated by Levac and colleagues. Joanna Briggs Institute framework will also guide this review. Four electronic databases will be searched for suicide bereavement/loss concepts. Two reviewers will apply inclusion and exclusion criteria to identify articles discussing engagement in meaningful activities of everyday living post loss. Data will be descriptively summarized and analyzed using inductive content analysis. Results will be reported following PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews. EXPECTED RESULTS A descriptive summary and conceptual map describing the current state of the peer-reviewed literature will be constructed. CONCLUSION Experiencing a suicide loss increases the risk of negative mental health outcomes. A synthesis of literature is required to map the current available evidence related to suicide bereavement and engagement in meaningful activities, with potential implications for improving supports and services for those bereaved. Abstract
IMPORTANCE Little is known about the severity of participation restrictions among people living in the community with chronic stroke. Even less is known about the association between participation and health in this population. OBJECTIVE To describe participation among people with chronic stroke and examine the association between participation and physical and mental health. DESIGN Secondary analysis of baseline data from an intervention study. SETTING The parent multisite intervention study was conducted in the community, and assessments were administered in participants' homes. PARTICIPANTS Thirty-one community-dwelling adults with chronic stroke. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Participation was measured with the Activity Card Sort (percentage of prestroke activities retained) and the Enfranchisement Scale of the Community Participation Indicators. Health was measured with the PROMIS®-29 Physical Health and Mental Health subscales. We calculated descriptive statistics for participation measures and Spearman's ρ correlations between participation and health outcomes. RESULTS Participation scores were poor on all measures of participation. Most striking, 94.9% of participants retained less than 80% of their prestroke activities. All measures of participation were modestly correlated with physical health (ρ = .28-.46) and were moderately correlated with mental health (ρ = .42-.63). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Participation restrictions are prevalent among adults with chronic stroke, with potential implications for mental health. Stronger community-based rehabilitation and support services to enhance participation of this high-risk population are warranted. What This Article Adds: This report highlights the severity of participation restrictions among people with chronic stroke. Moreover, this report shows that people with stroke feel a lack of inclusion in the community and that participation is associated with mental and physical health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This scoping review explores the characteristics of a meaningful life appraised by adults living with an acquired neurological impairment. INTRODUCTION Limitations in function, activity or participation following a neurological injury or disease imposes comprehensive changes on the every-day life of the affected person and close relatives. Including patients' perception of a meaningful life is pivotal to facilitate motivation and individualize rehabilitation efforts to address the patients' wishes, hopes, needs, and preferences. Surprisingly, only little research has been devoted to illuminating what a meaningful life is from the impaired person's perspective. Hence, a scoping review of existing knowledge is needed to facilitate person-centered high-quality rehabilitation and research initiatives. INCLUSION CRITERIA All studies, published in English or Scandinavian languages describing a meaningful life as experienced by adult persons with neurological impairment were included. No search date range filter was selected. METHODS This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews according to a published protocol. A three-step search strategy was conducted in the databases PubMed, Cinahl, PsycINFO and Embase. At least two independent researchers conducted inclusions and exclusions, data extraction, and analyses. Covidence software was used to manage the information. FINDINGS We identified 307 studies. Of these, 20 were included and quality assessed. Findings are reported in accordance with the PRISMA- SCR checklist and descriptively presented mapped in three main domains and 10 ten sub-domains. CONCLUSION Current literature conveys no clear definition or perception of what a meaningful life is. However, across the 20 included studies, the following main characteristics were stepped forward as particularly significant for adults living with an acquired neurological impairment in regard to achieving a meaningful life: i) to be part of meaningful relationships and meaningful activities; ii) to become confident with one's perceived identity.

Abstract
Purpose in life, which is a central component of the eudaimonic paradigm of well-being, has been sparsely examined in adolescence. This is unfortunate as adolescence is characterised by identity development and is a key period for the onset of mental disorders. To inform future research on well-being and purpose in life in adolescents, we drew factors from several fields of research, including mental health and psychological factors, and explored which factors were most strongly associated with purpose in life. Data were collected in a sample of 444 Italian adolescents (Mage = 16.30 [SD = 1.50], range: 14 to 20 years; 58% girls) and associations with mental health (stress, anxiety, depression, anger), psychological traits (mindfulness, self-hate, self-inadequacy, self-reassurance, isolation), and sociodemographic variables (age, sex, place of birth) were examined. Regression, dominance, and network analyses indicated that a stronger sense of purpose in life was associated with lower depressive symptoms, higher levels of self-reassurance, and being born in Italy. Our findings suggest that purpose in life is an important asset for well-being in adolescents and may protect against depression. Future longitudinal and/or experimental research should examine the potential protective role of purpose in life in relation to adolescent depression and how self-reassurance and sociodemographic factors (e.g., immigrant background) are involved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Participation and active engagement in meaningful activities support the emotional and physical well-being of older adults. In 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic altered lives, including the ability to participate in meaningful activities. This study compared meaningful activity engagement before and at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in a nationally representative, diverse sample >65 years between 2015 and 2020. METHODS We described the proportions and characteristics of National Health and Aging Trends Study participants and their engagement in four activities: visiting friends or family, attending religious services, participating in clubs/classes/other organized activities, and going out for enjoyment. We used mixed effects logistic regressions to compare probabilities of activity engagement before 2020 and in 2020, adjusting for age, sex, functional status, income, geographic region, anxiety-depression, and transportation issues. RESULTS Of 6815 participants in 2015, the mean age was 77.7 (7.6) years; 57% of participants were female; 22% were Black, 5% Hispanic, 2% were American Indian, and 1% were Asian; 20% had disability; and median income was $33,000. Participation in all four activities remained consistent between 2015 and 2019 and declined in 2020. Significant differences existed in attending religious services (p < 0.01) and going out for enjoyment (p < 0.001) by race and ethnicity, before and after the start of COVID-19. Black and Hispanic participants experienced the largest decline in attending religious services (-32%, -28%) while Asian and White participants experienced the largest decline in going out for enjoyment (-49%, -56%). CONCLUSIONS Potential quality of life tradeoffs should be considered to a greater extent in future pandemic emergencies.

Abstract
PURPOSE The effects of arts engagement on older adults have been well-documented. However, the ways older adults overcome common situational and dispositional barriers to enhance personal growth and well-being are less known. METHODS Fifty-six community dwelling older adults (71.3 ± 4.6 years) took part in dance, music, or a control workshop two times/week for ten weeks. Participants' personal growth was examined through focus groups and surveys in this mixed-methods study. RESULTS Focus group and survey results revealed participants experienced personal growth through engaging in the dance and music arms of the experiment. Participants, especially those in arts workshops, described personal growth experiences aligning with four themes: increased social connections, developed new skills, utilized a growth mindset, and used creativity to overcome situational and dispositional barriers to participation. The barriers included musculoskeletal challenges, hearing impairments, and difficulty retaining new information. CONCLUSIONS The study yielded high adherence and retention rates, and participants reported increased engagement within their communities. Our observations provide avenues for future practitioners and facilitators to create programming that empowers older adults and utilizes participants' ongoing feedback to support access, inclusion, and sense of community.

Abstract
Positive thoughts and emotions contribute to overall psychological health in diverse medical populations, including patients undergoing HSCT. However, few studies have described positive psychological well-being (eg, optimism, gratitude, flourishing) in patients undergoing HSCT using well-established, validated patient-reported outcome measures. We conducted cross-sectional secondary analyses of baseline data in 156 patients at 100 days post-HSCT enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of a psychological intervention (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT05147311) and a prospective study assessing medication adherence at a tertiary care academic cancer center from September 2021 to December 2022. We used descriptive statistics to outline participant reports of positive psychological well-being (PPWB) using validated measures for optimism, gratitude, positive affect, life satisfaction, and flourishing. The participants had a mean age of 57.4 ± 13.1 years, and 51% were male (n = 79). Many, but not all, participants reported high levels of PPWB (ie, optimism, gratitude, positive affect, life satisfaction, and flourishing), defined as agreement with items on a given PPWB measure. For example, for optimism, 29% of participants did not agree that "overall, I expect more good things to happen to me than bad." Aside from life satisfaction, mean PPWB scores were higher in the HSCT population than in other illness populations. Although many patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing HSCT report high levels of PPWB, a substantial minority of patients reported low PPWB (i.e., no agreement with items on a given PPWB measure). Because PPWB is associated with important clinical outcomes in medical populations, further research should determine whether an intervention to promote PPWB can improve quality of life in HSCT recipients.

Abstract
Background and Objectives Extremely hot temperature affects psychological well-being negatively, especially for older adults with lower socioeconomic status (SES). The objectives of this study are to examine: (a) the impact of hot instantaneous temperature on older adults' emotional well-being and (b) whether meaningful engagement could reduce the above impact, particularly for those of lower SES. Research Design and Methods We conducted a quantitative time-sampling study during hot-weather months (May-September) in 2021 and 2022. The sample comprises 344 participants aged 60 years or older (Mage = 67.15, SDage = 5.26) living in urban areas of Hong Kong, where hot days (daily maximum temperature ≥33°C) accounted for 23% of the study days. Participants reported positive and negative affect, and engagement in meaningful activities, three times a day over a 10-day period, and wore sensors that tracked the instantaneous temperature of their immediate environment. Multilevel modeling was employed to examine the impacts on affect from temperature, SES, and meaningful activity engagement. Results Hotter instantaneous temperature predicted greater momentary negative affect and less positive affect immediately afterwards. Meaningful engagement significantly buffered against the affective impacts of hotter temperature, and this buffering effect was more salient among older adults of lower SES. Discussion and implications This study highlights the role of meaningful engagement in reducing the impact of hotter instantaneous temperature on older adults' emotional well-being, particularly for those of lower SES. Meaningful activity engagement may be capitalized on, as a strategy, to reduce climate-related social inequality.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically affected individuals' psychological well-being worldwide, thus representing a challenge for flourishing among emerging adults. To understand psychological processes involved in the positive adaptation to this challenge, the present study examined the role of meaning in life and religious identity as crucial resources for flourishing in a sample of 255 Italian emerging adults. Specifically, as in the midst of a stressful event individuals may experience the potential for flourishing through the process of search for meaning, the study examined the mediated role of existential, spiritual/religious and prosocial orientations as the three primary trajectories for building meaning. Results from path analytic mediation models revealed a positive influence of presence of meaning and in-depth exploration on flourishing. Findings also suggested the contribution of prosocial orientation in building meaning and, ultimately, in increasing flourishing. Implications are discussed.

Abstract
Human flourishing, the state of optimal functioning and well-being across all aspects of an individual's life, has been a topic of philosophical and theological discussion for centuries. In the mid-20th century, social psychologists and health scientists began exploring the concept of flourishing in the context of health and high-level wellness. However, it is only in recent years, in part due to the USD 43 million Global Flourishing Study including 22 countries, that flourishing has entered the mainstream discourse. Here, we explore this history and the rapid acceleration of research into human flourishing, defined as "the relative attainment of a state in which all aspects of a person's life are good" by the Harvard University's Flourishing Program. We also explore the construct of "vitality", which refers to a sense of aliveness, energy, and motivation; we contend that this has been neglected in the flourishing movement. We explore why incorporating measures of vitality, together with a broader biopsychosocial approach, considers all dimensions of the environment across time (the total exposome), which will greatly advance research, policies, and actions to achieve human flourishing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A holistic understanding of the naturalistic dynamics among physical activity, sleep, emotions, and purpose in life as part of a system reflecting wellness is key to promoting well-being. The main aim of this study was to examine the day-to-day dynamics within this wellness system. METHODS Using self-reported emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, anxiousness) and physical activity periods collected twice per day, and daily reports of sleep and purpose in life via smartphone experience sampling, more than 28 days as college students ( n = 226 young adults; mean [standard deviation] = 20.2 [1.7] years) went about their daily lives, we examined day-to-day temporal and contemporaneous dynamics using multilevel vector autoregressive models that consider the network of wellness together. RESULTS Network analyses revealed that higher physical activity on a given day predicted an increase of happiness the next day. Higher sleep quality on a given night predicted a decrease in negative emotions the next day, and higher purpose in life predicted decreased negative emotions up to 2 days later. Nodes with the highest centrality were sadness, anxiety, and happiness in the temporal network and purpose in life, anxiety, and anger in the contemporaneous network. CONCLUSIONS Although the effects of sleep and physical activity on emotions and purpose in life may be shorter term, a sense of purpose in life is a critical component of wellness that can have slightly longer effects, bleeding into the next few days. High-arousal emotions and purpose in life are central to motivating people into action, which can lead to behavior change.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, various restrictions forced people around the world to socially isolate. People were asked to stay at home and were largely unable to do many of the activities that they derived meaning from. Since meaning is often related to mental health, these restrictions were likely to decrease mental health. The current study aimed to examine these effects and additionally benefit individuals' mental health by making their meaning salient. Specifically, the goal of the research was to design an intervention that could counter the potential negative effects of social distancing. We recruited a total of 96 U.S.A. residents (M age = 34.45, 92.7% Female) and assigned them to either the control group or to a meaning salience intervention. That is, participants either focused on the meaning of their daily activities (n = 45) or did not participate in any study-related activities during the week (n = 51). They completed various measures of mental health before and after this experimental period. Results suggested that the control group reported significantly greater anxiety, depression, and stress at the end of the week. In contrast, the experimental group reported less anxiety and trended toward less depression and stress at the end of that same week. In all, results suggest that simply focusing on one's daily activities and the meaning found in them protected people from the otherwise detrimental effects of the restrictions. This provides a promising and simple intervention that may assist both individuals and practitioners aiming to improve mental health, especially in challenging times.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with serious mental illnesses have elevated levels of depressive symptoms. Limited engagement in meaningful activities, such as work, social interactions, volunteering, and participation in faith, are one plausible explanation for this. Increased community participation over time may be associated with decreased depressive symptoms. AIM Examine whether an increase in participation over time predicts a decrease in depression after controlling for depression at the baseline. METHODS Participants were 183 adults with schizophrenia spectrum, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder who completed the Hopkins Symptom Index - Depression subscale and the Temple University Community Participation Measure. Participants completed these measures at baseline and either a 12- or 24-month follow-up timepoint. Multiple regression analyses were conducted with the depression score as a dependent variable and changes in community participation as a predictor variable. Demographics, baseline depression score, and time interval between baseline and last observation were entered as control variables. RESULTS Endorsing more activities as important, participating in more important areas that are important, and participating 'enough' in more important areas over time were each significant predictors of decreases in depression. CONCLUSION These findings enhance the connection between community participation and depression and suggest that a focus on participation may be important in terms of boosting both community functioning and treatment goals.

This exploratory study aimed to examine multiple aspects of the participation of adults in the chronic phase following acquired brain injury (ABI), considering different disability levels. Our study included 25 adults ≥6 months after ABI (predominantly stroke), living at home, without severe cognitive decline. Primary measures included the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (subjective participation) and the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory-4 Participation Index (objective participation). The results indicated subjective participation problems in all of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health participation domains. In addition, objective participation was reported as most limited in the areas of leisure and recreational activities, residence, and employment. Both subjective and objective participation profiles varied according to the disability level except for the social and leisure areas, which were found to be similar across all subgroups. However, only partial compatibility was found between the subjective and objective participation aspects. To conclude, our findings indicated that chronic ABI survivors report a variety of subjective and objective participation concerns that varied according to their disability levels. Moreover, the incongruity between the participation aspects suggests that the level of limitation may not necessarily correspond to the importance of a particular participation area. This highlights the need for comprehensive assessments to determine unique individual participation profiles in order to facilitate client-centered interventions supporting the rehabilitation of community-dwelling ABI survivors.

Abstract
Apathy, a clinical disorder characterized by low motivation, is prevalent in people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It affects mental and physical health-related quality-of-life, medication adherence, and is associated with cognitive decline. However, the causes of apathy and the underlying brain mechanisms in HIV are unknown. Brain responses to reward may be relevant to understanding apathy and might serve as biomarkers for diagnosis or treatment response. Electroencephalogram (EEG) responses to gain and loss feedback in simple guessing tasks have been related to apathy in neurodegenerative conditions and healthy individuals. The primary aim of this study is to contribute evidence regarding the relationship between two EEG correlates of reward processing, the Reward Positivity, and the Feedback-P300, and real-world motivated behavior indicated by self-reported hours engaged in goal-directed leisure activities per week, in older individuals with well-controlled HIV infection. High-density EEG was collected from 75 participants while they performed a guessing task with gain or loss feedback. We found that a later component of reward processing, the Feedback-P300, was related to real-world engagement, while the earlier Reward Positivity was not. The Feedback-P300 measured with EEG holds promise as a biomarker for motivated behavior in older people living with HIV. These findings lay the groundwork for a better understanding of the neurobiology of apathy in this condition.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Meaningful activities (MA) have a positive impact on identity, well-being, participation and inclusion. Although people with intellectual disabilities (PID) depend on their direct support professionals (DSPs) to engage in MA, the DSPs need support which could enable them to offer more qualitative care and support. METHODS AND ANALYSIS To identify DSPs' needs, and to develop a tool/service, an innovative and iterative approach is developed, based on the human-centred design (HCD) process, combined with traditional qualitative and quantitative research methods. In the inspiration phase (needs analysis), in-depth interviews will be conducted in two day care centres in Flanders using an interpretative phenomenological analyses, one with a supply-driven approach and the other with a demand-driven approach, followed by a survey sent to all Flemish day care centres. In the ideation phase, the insights of phase 1 will guide a cocreation process (comprising a World Cafe, brainstorm and prototype sessions) with the DSPs, PID and other stakeholders. In the implementation phase, the solution will be tested in the two day care centres from phase 1 by means of living labs and a realist evaluation. By adopting this protocol, the functionality, quality, usability and acceptance are expected to increase. This protocol adopts all phases of the HCD process and shows the complementarity of HCD with traditional research methods. PID and the DSPs will benefit as the end result is truly grounded in their specific needs and wishes. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval by the Ethics Committee of the University Hospital Ghent, Belgium (reference numbers: B670202042983 and PA2021-091). All participants will sign informed consent forms. Results of this study will be submitted for publication in relevant peer-reviewed journals and will be presented at relevant conferences.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To describe high-functioning older adults' experiences of participation in daily activities and perceived barriers and facilitators to participation one- and 3-months post-acute hospitalization. BACKGROUND Older adults discharged after acute illness hospitalization are at risk for functional decline and adverse health outcomes. Yet, little is known about the subjective experience of resuming participation in meaningful activities beyond the immediate post-discharge period among high-functioning older adults, a mostly overlooked sub-sample. DESIGN Qualitative descriptive longitudinal study adhering to the COREQ guidelines. METHODS Forty two participants ages ≥65 years (mean age 75, SD ± 7.9) were recruited from internal medicine wards. Semi-structured interviews were conducted at participants' homes one-month post-discharge, followed by a telephone interview 3-months after. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Participants perceived the hospitalization as a disruption of healthy and meaningful routines. This first key theme had unique expressions over time and included two sub-themes. At one month: (1) reduced life spaces and sedentary routines. At 3 months: (2) a matter of quality not quantity - giving up even one meaningful activity can make a difference. The second key theme was described as a combination of physical and psychological barriers to participation over time. These themes demonstrated the profound impact of the hospitalization on behavior (participation) and feelings (e.g., symptoms). The third key theme was described as a dyad of intrinsic and extrinsic facilitators to participation. CONCLUSIONS Acute illness hospitalization may lead to subtle decreases in participation in meaningful health-promoting activities, even among high-functioning older adults. These changes may impact overall well-being and possibly mark the beginning of functional decline. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This study highlights the need for a more comprehensive assessment of participation, relevant for high-functioning older adults, to enable person-centered care. Intervention programs should address the modifiable barriers and facilitators identified in this study.

Abstract
In an intensifying working life, it is important for employees to proactively shape their lives beyond work to create opportunities for satisfying personal needs. These efforts can be beneficial for creating and sustaining well-being in terms of vitality. In this study, we focused on off-job crafting (OJC) for meaning and OJC for affiliation, conceptualized as proactive changes in off-job life with the aim of increasing satisfaction of needs for meaning and affiliation, among employees in Finland and Japan, two countries with disparate cultural values. We examined longitudinal within-person relationships between the two OJC dimensions and vitality, as well as the relationships between OJC and contextual variables, such as age and gender. We conducted a longitudinal study over 6 months with three measurement points. A total of 578 Finnish and 228 Japanese employees participated in the study. Hypotheses were tested with latent growth analysis. Increases in OJC for meaning and for affiliation were mostly positively related to increases in vitality over time in both countries. In Finland, age was positively related to OJC for meaning. In Japan, age was negatively related to OJC for meaning, but the female gender was positively related to OJC for affiliation. Focusing on increasing meaning and affiliation in off-job life can be beneficial strategies for employees to feel positively energized. The role of contextual variables and culture in OJC should be examined further in future studies.

Abstract
In theories of occupational therapy, occupation serves as a conduit for creating meaning and well-being. A crucial component of occupational therapy is developing and maintaining hope of clients during periods of major difficulty. Understanding the relationship between hope and occupation can prove helpful in stressful situations, such as caring for children with chronic illnesses. The aim of the present study was to identify occupations that foster experiences of hope among mothers of adult children with mental illness. A qualitative approach, informed by a constructivist framework and thematic analysis, was used to interpret and explicate relevant occupation-related themes that fostered hope in four mothers. The mother-participants reported engaging in various occupations, yet only occupations that were imbued with spiritual significance fostered experiences of hope. This study brings to the forefront of occupational therapy discourse the issue of spiritual connectedness as a potential link between occupations and hope.

Abstract
People who have meaningful lives generally experience less anxiety and depression. Meaning salience, or the awareness of the meaning in one's life, is believed to partially explain this relationship. However, in times of isolation, what might be most salient to people are the meaningful aspects of their lives that have disappeared. This study seeks to understand how making gained versus lost meaning salient affects anxiety and depression. Participants either wrote for 5 minutes about how their life gained meaning (n = 29) or lost meaning (n = 30) due to the coronavirus restrictions, or about music (i.e., the control condition; n = 32). Those who wrote about gained meaning experienced less momentary anxiety than those who wrote about lost meaning. In addition, meaning salience moderated the relationship between meaning and both anxiety and depression. Those who wrote about gained meaning appeared to exhibit a positive relationship between meaning in life (MIL) and both anxiety and depression, while those who wrote about lost meaning exhibited negative relationships. In all, this suggests that meaning salience is not always positive and that researchers and practitioners should consider how making positive meaning salient may be more beneficial than a general focus on MIL.

Abstract
This study explores the efficacy of a specific tool – the articulation of the ideal self – in job engagement, psychological well-being, and organizational citizenship behavior. We hypothesized that employees who can visualize their jobs as part of their ideal self – in particular how it helps in its development and realization – would feel higher levels of engagement and fulfillment in their lives, as well as engage in greater amounts of helping and voice OCB. A total of 239 full time employees from five companies in Costa Rica filled out the ideal self questionnaire, the job engagement, and psychological well-being surveys, and were evaluated by their peers on task behavior and helping and voice OCB. Results of the SEM model showed that the ideal self was positively related to job engagement, psychological well-being and helping and voice. These findings contribute to the research on the impact and importance for organizations to help employees find meaningfulness in their work.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The presence or absence of clearly defined symptoms and underlying pathophysiology may be a crucial variable related to variability in well-being and stigmatization in individuals with chronic pain (ICPs). In the context of pain, absence of clearly defined symptoms and pathophysiology deviates from the widely endorsed biomedical model and as such, may lead to stigmatization, which in turn could be related to ICPs' well-being. OBJECTIVES The present study compared physical, psychological, social well-being, and perceived stigmatization in individuals with clearly defined symptoms and underlying pathophysiology (rheumatoid arthritis, RA) and individuals with less well understood symptoms and pathophysiology (fibromyalgia, FM) using daily diaries. Furthermore, the association between daily perceived stigmatization and daily well-being was examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-nine participants with FM, 86 participants with RA, and 33 participants with both diagnoses completed a diary for 14 consecutive days. RESULTS Compared to individuals with RA, individuals with FM and individuals with both diagnoses reported worse daily well-being. After controlling for age, pain duration, and daily pain, differences between FM and RA remained significant for social well-being and completion of plans. Differences between RA and the dual diagnosis group remained significant for completion of plans, negative affect, and isolation. Furthermore, results suggested more stigmatization in individuals with FM than in individuals with RA. Individuals with both diagnoses reported equal stigmatization as individuals with FM, but more stigmatization than individuals with RA. Finally, increased levels of perceived stigma were associated with lower well-being. DISCUSSION Findings highlight that the absence of clearly defined symptoms and pathophysiology could be contributing to greater feelings of stigmatization, which may be detrimental for ICPs' well-being.

Abstract
Little is known about the impact of engagement in personally meaningful activities for older adults. Thus, this study examines the impact of engagement in one's favorite activity on cognitive, emotional, functional, and health-related outcomes in older adults with and without cognitive impairment. Data were obtained from 1,397 persons living with dementia (PLWD) and 4,719 cognitively healthy persons (CHP) who participated in wave 2 of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). Sociodemographic characteristics were examined by cognitive status. A multivariate analysis of variance indicated that, for PLWD, engagement in favorite activity was associated with greater functional independence and decreased depression. For CHP, engagement in favorite activity was associated with greater functional independence, decreased depression and anxiety, and better performance on memory measures. Findings suggest that engagement in valued activities that are considered personally meaningful may have significant and distinct benefits for persons with and without dementia.

Abstract
Psychological stress, loneliness, and psychological inflexibility are associated with poorer mental health and professional performance in university teachers. However, the relationship between these variables is understudied. The aim of the present study is to analyze the mediating role of psychological (in)flexibility on the effect of loneliness on psychological stress. A total of 902 professors from 11 universities in Ecuador were analyzed using standardized scales: the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14) to assess psychological stress, the Loneliness Scale Revised-Short (UCLA-3) for loneliness, and the Avoidance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-7) and Life Engagement Test as double measures of psychological (in)flexibility. Mediation was tested by using PROCESS macro for SPSS. The results indicated that psychological flexibility mediated the relationship between loneliness and stress in university professors, regardless of sex and the measure of psychological (in)flexibility considered. The practical implications of the results are discussed herein.

Abstract
The global COVID-19 pandemic has created a crisis of suffering. We conceptualize suffering as a deeply existential issue that fundamentally changes people indelible ways and for which there are no easy solutions. To better understand its effects and how people can flourish in the midst of this crisis, we formally introduce and elaborate on an Existential Positive Psychology Model of Suffering (EPPMS) and apply that to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Our model has three core propositions: (a) suffering reveals existential concerns, (b) existential anxiety impairs one's ability to find meaning, and (c) cultivating meaning is the primary way to address suffering and allay existential anxiety, eventually leading to flourishing (and potentially growth). We apply this model to the COVID-19 pandemic, including how to build meaning, and discuss clinical implications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND After discharge, stroke survivors and their informal caregivers need support from their social networks to resume their most valued activities. Rehabilitation professionals could help them establish a strong support system. OBJECTIVE Explore how older stroke survivors and their primary informal caregivers expect to resume their valued activities after discharge, and discover their ideas about involving, informing and educating their family members, friends and important others during inpatient rehabilitation so that, once home, they will have adequate support. METHODS We conducted semi-structured interviews with stroke survivors from three geriatric rehabilitation centres and their primary informal caregivers, used the pictures of daily activities to elicit their perspectives, and applied a descriptive and interpretive design to data analysis. RESULTS Many participants had no concrete idea about how to resume their activities after discharge but nevertheless were optimistic they would. They expected help to be available and saw no need for professionals to involve their network during inpatient rehabilitation. However, once they had insight into the challenges to expect after discharge, they often appreciated the idea of professionals contacting their network. To better understand the challenges after discharge, it was helpful if professionals provided concrete, honest information about the stroke's consequences for daily life. Actually doing daily activities also helped gain better insights. CONCLUSIONS To enhance insight in the need of social support after discharge, we suggest that rehabilitation professionals are honest about what to expect and let stroke survivors explore their valued activities in a realistic context more often.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meaningful Activity Participation Assessment (MAPA) is an appropriate tool for assessing both objective and subjective aspects of participation. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of MAPA in chronic stroke survivors. METHODS Translation of MAPA was done according to the standard protocol of forward-backward translation. One hundred and seven chronic stroke survivors participated in this study. In addition to the MAPA, they were assessed by Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), Center for Epidemiologic Studies of Depression Scale (CES-D), Life Satisfaction Index-Z (LSI-Z), Purpose in Life Test-Short Form (PIL-SF), and 36-Item Short-Form Survey (SF-36). To investigate the test-retest reliability, 37 participants were reassessed by MAPA after two weeks. Reliability, construct and known-groups validity were evaluated for MAPA. RESULTS The results showed an acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.79) and good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.92) of MAPA. A significant moderate to high correlation was found between the MAPA and PIL-SF, CES-D, LSI-Z, SWLS, and different subscales of SF-36 (r = 0.32-0.65). MAPA showed good ability to differentiate between young adults (age≤ 65 years) and older adults (age> 65 years) with chronic stroke (P = .005) as well as between chronic stroke survivors with different levels of disability (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS The MAPA has appropriate reliability and validity in chronic stroke survivors and is suggested to be used in research and clinical settings.

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how the Social Impact in Social Media (SISM, hereinafter) methodology applied in psychological research provides evidence for the visibility of the social impact of the research. This article helps researchers become aware of whether and how their improvements are capturing the interest of citizens and how citizens are applying such evidence and obtaining better outcomes, in this case, in relation to well-being. In addition, citizens can access the latest evidence on social media and act as channels of communication between science and social or personal networks and, in doing so, they can improve the living conditions of others. This methodology is also useful for agencies that support researchers in psychology with financial assistance, which can use it to evaluate the social impact of the funds that they invest in research. In this article, the 10 studies on well-being were selected for analysis using the following criteria: their research results led to demonstrable improvement in well-being, and these improvements are presented on social media. We applied the social impact coverage ratio to identify the percentage of the social impact shared in social media in relation to the total amount of social media data collected. Finally, examples of quantitative and qualitative evidence of the social impact of the research on well-being are presented.
