Abstract
BACKGROUND To examine whether the "Effectiveness of Guideline for Dissemination and Education in psychiatric treatment (EGIUDE)" project affects the rate of prescriptions of hypnotic medication and the type of hypnotic medications prescribed among psychiatrists, for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder in Japan. METHODS The EGUIDE project is a nationwide prospective study of evidence-based clinical guidelines for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder in Japan. From 2016 to 2021, clinical and prescribing data from patients discharged from hospitals participating in the EGUIDE project were used to examine hypnotic medication prescriptions The prescribing rate of hypnotics and the prescribing rate of each type of hypnotic (benzodiazepine receptor agonist, nonbenzodiazepine receptor agonist, melatonin receptor agonist, and orexin receptor antagonist) were compared among patients who had been prescribed medication by psychiatrists participating in the EGUIDE project and patients who had been prescribed medication by nonparticipating psychiatrists. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the effect of the EGUIDE project on the prescription of hypnotic medications. RESULTS A total of 12,161 patients with schizophrenia and 6,167 patients with major depressive disorder were included. Psychiatrists participating in the EGUIDE project significantly reduced the rate of prescribing hypnotic medication and benzodiazepine receptor agonists for both schizophrenia (P < 0.001) and major depressive disorder (P < 0.001) patients. CONCLUSION This is the first study to investigate the educational effects of guidelines for the treatment of psychiatric disorders on psychiatrists in terms of prescribing hypnotic medications to patients. The EGUIDE project may play an important role in reducing hypnotic medication prescription rates, particularly with respect to benzodiazepine receptor agonists. The results suggest that the EGUIDE project may result in improved therapeutic behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of sleep duration on the development of mental illness remain controversial. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the effects of long or short sleep duration on psychological disorders, which could reveal new ways for preventing and treating mental health conditions cheaply. METHODS Identifying published papers was accomplished by using the following five English databases on March 16, 2022: PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science databases, and Scopus. Cross-sectional and cohort studies were considered if they evaluated the association of sleep duration with all kinds of mental illness in adults. We excluded case reports, editorials, narrative reviews, and studies without detailed information on sleep duration. Summary effect-size estimates were expressed as risk ratios (RRs) or odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals and were evaluated using random-effect models. Mantel-Haenszel's random-effects model was used to estimate the inconsistency index (I2) and Tau2 index (measurement of heterogeneity). RESULTS A total of 52 studies were included in this analysis, consisting of 14 cohort studies and 38 cross-sectional studies. These studies involved a combined sample size of 1,407,891 participants who met the inclusion criteria. Cohort (adjusted RR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.26-1.60, P < .001, I2 = 37.6%, Tau2 = 0.014) and cross-sectional studies (adjusted OR = 1.67, 95% CI: 1.57-1.77, P < .001, I2 = 79.7%, Tau2 = 0.060) concluded that short sleep duration increased mental disorder risks. The same conclusions were acquired in the subgroup analysis, especially for depression (adjusted RR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.24-1.65, P < .001, I2 = 80.4%, Tau2 = 0.082), anxiety (adjusted RR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.04-1.63, P = .002, I2 = 0.0%, Tau2 = 0.000), and PTSD (adjusted RR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.04-1.76, P = .022, I2 = 24.1%, Tau2 = 0.013) in cohort studies. The results of subgroup analysis indicated that long sleep duration was not a risk factor for depression (adjusted RR = 1.15, 95% CI: 0.98-1.34, P = .088, I2 = 63.4%, Tau2 = 0.045) and anxiety (adjusted RR = 1.37, 95% CI: 0.93-2.03, P = .114, I2 = 0.0%, Tau2 = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS Short sleep duration, not long sleep duration, is an independent predictor of developing mental disorders, particularly anxiety and depression.

Abstract
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) presents considerable challenges to diagnosis and management due to symptom variability across time. Only recent work has highlighted the clinical implications for interrogating depression symptom variability. Thus, the present work investigates how sociodemographic, comorbidity, movement, and sleep data is associated with long-term depression symptom variability. Participant information included (N = 939) baseline sociodemographic and comorbidity data, longitudinal, passively collected wearable data, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores collected over 12 months. An ensemble machine learning approach was used to detect long-term depression symptom variability via: (i) a domain-driven feature selection approach and (ii) an exhaustive feature-inclusion approach. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were used to interrogate variable importance and directionality. The composite domain-driven and exhaustive inclusion models were both capable of moderately detecting long-term depression symptom variability (r = 0.33 and r = 0.39, respectively). Our results indicate the incremental predictive validity of sociodemographic, comorbidity, and passively collected wearable movement and sleep data in detecting long-term depression symptom variability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited research has simultaneously examined the link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), short sleep duration, and depressive symptoms among middle-aged or older Chinese adults. This study aims to investigate the association between ACEs and later-life depressive symptoms, and to examine the mediating role of short sleep duration (<6 h/night) in this association. METHODS Data of 11,452 participants aged ≥45 years were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Information on ACEs, depressive symptoms, and sleep duration were reported via questionnaires. The mediating effect of short sleep duration in the association between ACEs and depressive symptoms was examined by Baron and Kenny's causal steps method and Karlson/Holm/Breen (KHB) method. RESULTS Compared to non-exposed group, exposure to ACEs was significantly associated with increased odds of depressive symptoms in a dose-response pattern. The odds ratio of depressive symptoms increased from 1.27 (95 % CI: 1.11-1.46) for one ACE to 3.38 (95 % CI: 2.92-3.90) for ≥4 ACEs. The KHB method identified significant mediating role of short sleep duration in the association between experiencing three or more ACEs and depressive symptoms, with the proportional mediation estimated at 8.96 % and 8.85 % for the groups with 3 ACEs and ≥4 ACEs, respectively. The results were consistent across genders and gender did not moderate these associations. LIMITATIONS The cross-sectional design limited the ability to make causal inference. CONCLUSIONS ACEs were positively associated with depressive symptoms, and short sleep duration partially mediated this association. Promoting optimal sleep duration among ACE-exposed individuals might improve their mental health.

Abstract
Purpose The efficacy of sleep extension therapy using a remote support system (SET-R) was investigated in university students with increased social jetlag (SJL). Methods For this two-arm parallel randomized controlled trial, we recruited Japanese university students with SJL ≥ 60 min. The SET-R provided an individualized sleep schedule for gradual sleep extension using email and sleep hygiene education, stimulus control therapy, and progressive muscle relaxation as web content. The control group was sent an email that encouraged them to record their sleep. The duration of the intervention program was two weeks. The primary outcome was the mean change in SJL two weeks later, assessed using the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (MCTQ). The other outcomes included Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Insomnia Severity Index, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and sleep quiz. A follow-up survey was conducted 6 months after the intervention. Results Of 54 students, 26 were assigned to an intervention group and 28 to a control group. The difference in the mean change in SJL between the two groups (n = 26, n = 27) at two weeks was statistically significant (27.7 min, P = 0.048). The scores for the ESS, PHQ-9, and sleep quiz were improved in the intervention group relative to the control group. At the 6-month follow-up point, the difference in the mean change in SJL between the two groups (n = 22, n = 27) was not statistically significant, but scores for the PHQ-9, and sleep quiz remained significant. Conclusions This study demonstrated the efficacy of the SET-R among university students with increased SJL. Trial Registration The study was registered with the UMIN Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN000042634, 2021/02/01).

Mediating role of depressive symptoms on the relationship between sleep duration and cognitive function. Sci Rep 2023; 13:4067. Abstract
Although some studies have shown the association between sleep duration and cognitive impairment is positive, the mechanism explaining how sleep duration is linked to cognition remains poor understood. The current study aims to explore it among Chinese population. A cross-sectional study of 12,589 participants aged 45 or over was conducted, cognition was assessed by three measures to capture mental intactness, episodic memory, and visuospatial abilities. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale 10 (CES-D10) was administered during the face-to-face survey to assess depressive status. Sleep duration was reported by the participants themselves. Partial correlation and linear regression were used to explore the association between sleep duration, cognition, and depression. The Bootstrap methods PROCESS program was used to detect the mediation effect of depression. Sleep duration was positively correlated with cognition and negatively with depression (p < 0.01). The CES-D10 score (r = - 0.13, p < 0.01) was negatively correlated with cognitive function. Linear regression analysis showed sleep duration was positively associated with cognition (p = 0.001). When depressive symptoms were considered, the association between sleep duration and cognition lost significance (p = 0.468). Depressive symptoms have mediated the relationship between sleep duration and cognitive function. The findings revealed that the relationship between sleep duration and cognition is mainly explained by depressive symptoms and may provide new ideas for interventions for cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the association between insomnia symptoms and non-restorative sleep (NRS) in individuals with Typus melancholicus, a personality trait linked to depression, in the general population. We analyzed data from a Japanese cross-sectional survey of 2519 randomly sampled adults. Typus melancholicus was evaluated using a modified version of Kasahara's Typus melancholicus inventory (modified-KTM). Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the associations of insomnia symptoms and NRS with modified-KTM scores. We demonstrated that insomnia symptoms and NRS were both positively associated with modified-KTM scores. Our results provide evidence for an association between Typus melancholicus and insomnia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to understand how sleep duration could affect depression among elderly in China. METHOD A total of 7103 individuals aged 60 and older were selected from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. A generalized linear mixed-effects model was used to estimate the relationship between sleep duration and depression, and we performed stratified analyses by age: young-old elderly, old-old elderly and oldest-old elderly. RESULTS Short sleep duration significantly incresased CES-D10 depression scores. In addition, the participants with middle sleep duration had higher CES-D10 scores compared to the participants with long sleep duration among young-old elderly, and we found that middle sleep duration was not significantly different from CES-D10 scores after adjustment for demographics, frequencies of activities and Chronic diseases. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggested that there was a complex association between depression and sleep duration among elderly in China. Different from previous research results on the middle or normal sleep time of the elderly, the middle sleep duration maybe not optimal sleep duration in this study. Investigation of sleep extension to prevent depression may be warranted among the elderly.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To investigate the proportion of inpatients with schizophrenia and major depressive disorder prescribed hypnotic medication, and the association between such medication and the use of other antipsychotic agents. METHODS This was a nationwide cross-sectional study performed as part of the 'Effectiveness of Guidelines for Dissemination and Education in Psychiatric Treatment' (EGUIDE) project. Data from 2146 inpatients with schizophrenia and 1031 inpatients with major depressive disorder were analyzed. All types and dosages of psychotropic drugs were recorded and the data at the time of discharge were analyzed. Associations between the use of hypnotic medication and other antipsychotic agents were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression analyses. RESULTS The proportions of schizophrenia patients who were prescribed any and two or more hypnotic agents were 55.7% and 17.6%, respectively, and the corresponding proportions for patients with major depressive disorder were 63.6% and 22.6%, respectively. In schizophrenia patients, multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that two or more antipsychotics, anticholinergic drugs, anxiolytics, and mood stabilizers/antiepileptic drugs were positively associated with the use of any hypnotic agent. In patients with major depressive disorder, multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that two or more antidepressants, two or more antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and mood stabilizers/antiepileptic drugs were positively associated with the use of any hypnotic agent. CONCLUSIONS Prescription of hypnotic agents was found to be highly frequent among inpatients with psychiatric disorders. Prescription of two or more main antipsychotic agents was commonly associated with the use of hypnotic medication for both schizophrenia and major depressive disorder.

Abstract
Using large-scale objective sleep data derived from body acceleration signals of 68,604 Japanese residents ranging from adolescents to the elderly (10–89 years old), we found significant age- and gender-related differences in sleep properties (timing, duration, and quality) in real-life settings. Time-in-bed and total sleep time (TST) showed a U-shaped association with age, indicating their decrease in adulthood following their increase in the elderly. There was a remarkable shift in sleep phase toward earlier bedtime and earlier wake time with increasing age (> 20 years), together with worsening of sleep quality, which is estimated by sleep efficiency (SE) and wake time after sleep onset. Gender comparisons showed that TST was shorter in women than in similarly aged men, which is much evident after the age of 30 years. This was associated with later bedtimes and greater age-related deterioration of sleep quality in women. Compared to men in the same age group, women over age 50 demonstrated a greater reduction in SE with aging, due mainly to increasing durations of nighttime awakening. These differences can be attributed to several intricately intertwined causes, including biological aging as well as socio-cultural and socio-familial factors in Japan. In conclusion, our findings provide valuable insights on the characteristics of Japanese sleep habits.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this systematic review was to characterise and synthesise the literature that explores the effects of macronutrient manipulation on sleep outcomes in order to provide dietary recommendations for sleep improvement. METHODS Intervention studies that evaluated the effects of macronutrient manipulations on sleep were identified using four databases. A study was included if it: (a) delivered a macronutrient-based dietary intervention, regardless of length; (b) included healthy human participants aged 18 and older; and (c) measured some aspect of sleep, for example, duration or quality, in some manner. RESULTS A total of 17 papers and 19 studies met the inclusion criteria. Included studies were organised into acute studies lasting less than 24 hours (n = 4), longer-term (≥24 hours) studies (n = 10), and energy restriction studies (n = 5). The greatest amount of support was observed for longer-term administration of higher carbohydrate diets. These interventions positively influenced rapid eye movement sleep; however, non-rapid eye movement sleep was negatively affected. The overall health outcomes of these changes are difficult to assess. Limited evidence suggests higher protein diets under conditions of energy restriction can improve sleep quality, but these effects might be restricted to individuals with overweight or obesity. Current evidence does not support the effects of acute macronutrient manipulation, defined as less than 24 hours, on sleep outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Manipulating carbohydrate intake for at least 24 hours appears to alter sleep outcomes among healthy individuals. Interventions were highly varied and methodological shortcomings were identified. More work is required to fully understand how macronutrient intake affects sleep outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea is a risk factor for stroke. This study sought to assess the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and wake-up strokes (WUS), that is, stroke symptoms that are first noted upon awakening from sleep. PATIENTS/METHODS In this analysis, 837 Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi (BASIC) project participants completed an interview to ascertain stroke onset during sleep (WUS) versus wakefulness (non-wake-up stroke, non-WUS). A subset of 316 participants underwent a home sleep apnea test (HSAT) shortly after ischemic stroke to assess for OSA. Regression models were used to test the association between OSA and WUS, stratified by sex. RESULTS Of 837 participants who completed the interview, 251 (30%) reported WUS. Among participants who underwent an HSAT, there was no significant difference in OSA severity [respiratory event index (REI)] among participants with WUS [median REI 17, interquartile range (IQR) 10, 29] versus non-WUS (median REI 18, IQR 9, 30; p = 0.73). OSA severity was not associated with increased odds of WUS among men [unadjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.011, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.995, 1.027] or women (unadjusted OR 0.987, 95% CI 0.959, 1.015). These results remained unchanged after adjustment for age, congestive heart failure, body mass index, and pre-stroke depression in men (adjusted OR 1.011, 95% CI 0.994, 1.028) and women (adjusted OR 0.988, 95% CI 0.959, 1.018). CONCLUSIONS Although OSA is a risk factor for stroke, the onset of stroke during sleep is not associated with OSA in this large, population-based stroke cohort.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the effects of baseline and changes in frailty states on subsequent depressive symptoms, and whether sleep duration would modify these effects. DESIGN Prospective, cohort study. SETTING The 2011 baseline and 2013 follow-up waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). PARTICIPANTS Community-dwelling old adults who were aged 60 or above at baseline and participated in the 2011 and 2013 waves of the CHARLS (N = 5,026). MEASUREMENTS Frailty was measured using the physical frailty phenotype (PFP) scale. Levels of depressive symptoms were measured by the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Using the generalized estimating equations (GEE), the effects of baseline and transitions in frailty states were examined on subsequent depressive symptoms, adjusting for a range of confounding variables. RESULTS Baseline prefrail (b = 0.97, P < .05) and frail states (b = 0.35, P < .05) were associated with higher subsequent level of depressive symptoms 2 years later. Within individuals who were robust at baseline, transitioning into prefrail/frail (b = 3.04, P < .001) was associated with a higher subsequent level of depressive symptoms, and this association was accelerated by short sleep duration. Within individuals who were prefrail at baseline, transitioning into frail (b = 1.76, P < .001) was associated with higher subsequent levels of depressive symptoms, and this association was stronger among those who reported short sleep duration. CONCLUSION Baseline and transitions in frailty states were significantly related with higher subsequent levels of subsequent depressive symptoms. Short sleep duration significantly moderated the effects of baseline or transitions of frailty on subsequent depressive symptoms. Targeted interventions could be implemented to improve sleep quality for prefrail and frail older adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep problems pose serious public health concerns, and evidence suggests that the problem is worsening. Both sufficient sleep quantity and quality are needed for optimal health, particularly among older adults, but access to sleep care can be difficult. This study examined the efficacy of a six-week sleep behavior change program designed for older adults that was delivered virtually by health educators. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS This quasi-experimental pilot study (intervention n = 22; control n = 31) explored the effects of the Sleep Education for Elders Program (SLEEP) on sleep outcomes, which included: 1) sleep quality, measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI); 2) sleep duration, extracted from the PSQI; 3) insomnia symptoms, measured by the Insomnia Severity Index; 4) sleep hygiene behaviors, obtained from the Sleep Hygiene Index; and 5) excessive daytime sleepiness, measured by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. RESULTS After SLEEP, the intervention group experienced significantly improved sleep quality (p < 0.001), a reduction in maladaptive sleep hygiene behaviors (p = 0.007), and reduced daytime sleepiness (p < 0.027) compared to the control group. Effect sizes for all five sleep measures were medium or large. In the intervention group, all changes were judged to be clinically meaningful (≥ 0.5 SD) except for improvements in daytime sleepiness. CONCLUSION These data support the efficacy of a group-based, virtual behavior change intervention in improving sleep outcomes among older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidences suggest that alterations in circadian rhythms trigger the development of mental disorders. Eveningness, sleep behavior, and circadian genes polymorphisms have been associated with depression and anxiety symptomatology. However, the mechanism underlying these interactions is not well understood. We investigated the contribution of diurnal preference, sleep habits, and PER3 VNTR polymorphism (rs57875989) to depression and anxiety symptoms in a Northeast sample from the Brazilian population. METHODS Eight hundred and four young adults completed the Morningness-Eveningness (MEQ), Munich Chronotype (MCTQ), Center for Epidemiologic Studies - Depression (CES-D), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) questionnaires. All participants were genotyped and linear regression was performed to test the interactions between the genetic /behavioral variants and depression/ anxiety symptoms. RESULTS Eveningness and sleep behaviors (bedtime, wake-up time, sleep duration, and midpoint of sleep) were correlated with depression symptomatology, specifically in somatic factors of the CES-D questionnaire. No correlation was found between diurnal preference/sleep habits with anxiety symptoms for both BAI total score and its factors. However, women with PER34/4 genotype showed less interpesonal affect in depression symptomatology and more anxiety symptoms in four factors of the BAI questionnaire. LIMITATIONS Mainly because this study was based on self-report questionnaires and was limited to undergraduate students aging 18 to 30 years old. CONCLUSION These results reinforce a role for sleep and diurnal preference in depression, and PER3 VNTR polymorphism in anxiety symptomatology, particularly in women.

Abstract
Objectives: Given the close relationship between sleep-wake disturbances and depression, an in-depth investigation of such a relationship is imperative. The present study aims at elucidating the relationship between various sleep-wake disturbances and depression in older adults and at examining the influence of co-occurring anxiety on such associations.Method: A community-based survey using the cohort from the Yilan Study in Taiwan was conducted from August 2013 to November 2016. Adults aged 65 and older were randomly selected to participate in the study. The Hospital Depression and Anxiety Scale was used to measure clinical depressive and anxiety symptoms. Insomnia and daytime sleepiness were defined through the Athens Insomnia Scale and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, respectively. Furthermore, the use of hypnotics, subjective sleep duration and sleep-wake scheduling were evaluated. Their relationship with depression was examined through logistic regression analyses.Results: There were 2620 participants surveyed and 247 (9.4%) had depression. Before controlling for anxiety, insomnia (OR: 1.78, 95% CI: 1.23-2.55), daytime sleepiness (OR: 1.79, 95% CI: 1.27-2.53), and long sleepers (OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.24-2.53) have a higher likelihood for depression in the multivariable regression analysis. However, when including anxiety into the multivariable regression model, only those with daytime sleepiness and long sleepers had an elevated risk for depression. Therefore, the association between insomnia and depression turned to be statistically non-significant.Conclusion: In older adults, various sleep-wake disturbances differ in their relationship with depression. In addition, daytime sleepiness and long sleep duration were mostly characteristic of depression when co-occurring anxiety was considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individual dimensions of sleep health, including satisfaction, sleepiness/alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration, are associated with depression. We investigated whether a composite sleep health score is associated with symptoms of depression among Japanese female hospital nurses. METHODS Participants were nurses (n = 2482, all women, age 31.2 ± 8.9 years) working at three general hospitals in Tokyo, Japan. A cross-sectional survey, conducted in 2015, assessed self-reported sleep and symptoms of depression. Sleep health was categorized as "good" or "poor" across five dimensions: satisfaction, daytime sleepiness, mid-sleep time, efficiency, and duration. A composite sleep health score was calculated by summing the number of "poor" dimensions. Depression was defined by depressed mood, loss of interest, or at least one of those symptoms ("depression symptoms"). Associations between sleep health and symptoms of depression were evaluated with multivariate logistic regression analyses, adjusting for sociodemographic factors and hypnotic medication use. RESULTS In multivariate logistic regression analyses, sleep health symptoms of poor satisfaction, efficiency, and duration were significantly associated with depressed mood; daytime sleepiness and poor efficiency were significantly associated with loss of interest; and poor satisfaction, daytime sleepiness, mid-sleep time, and efficiency were significantly associated with having at least one depressive symptom. The composite sleep health score was associated in a graded fashion with greater odds of depression symptoms. CONCLUSION Individual and composite sleep health scores were associated with symptoms of depression. Assessing composite measures of multidimensional sleep health may help to better understand the well-known associations between poor sleep and depression and lead to improved intervention strategies.

Abstract
It is currently unclear whether changes in sweet taste perception of model systems after sleep curtailment extend to complex food matrices. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to use a novel solid oat-based food (crisps) and oat-based beverage stimulus sweetened with sucralose to assess changes in taste perception after sleep curtailment. Forty-one participants recorded a habitual and curtailed night of sleep using a single-channel electroencephalograph. The next morning, overall sweetness, flavor, and texture liking responses to energy- and nutrient-matched oat products across five concentrations of sweetness were measured. Overall (p = 0.047) and flavor (p = 0.017) liking slopes across measured concentrations were steeper after curtailment, suggesting that sweeter versions of the oat products were liked more after sleep curtailment. Additionally, a hierarchical cluster analysis was used to classify sweet likers and non-likers. While the effect of sleep curtailment on sweet liking did not differ between sweet liking classification categories, sleep curtailment resulted in decreased texture liking in the solid oat crisps for sweet non-likers (p < 0.001), but not in the oat beverage. These findings illustrate the varied effects of sleep on hedonic response in complex food matrices and possible mechanisms by which insufficient sleep can lead to sensory-moderated increases in energy intake.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of one night of sleep curtailment on hunger, food cravings, food reward, and portion size selection. Women who reported habitually sleeping 7⁻9 h per night, were aged 18⁻55, were not obese, and had no sleep disorders were recruited. Sleep conditions in this randomized crossover study consisted of a normal night (NN) and a curtailed night (CN) where time in bed was reduced by 33%. Hunger, tiredness, sleep quality, sleepiness, and food cravings were measured. A progressive ratio task using chocolates assessed the food reward. Participants selected portions of various foods that reflected how much they wanted to eat at that time. The sleep duration was measured using a single-channel electroencephalograph. Twenty-four participants completed the study. The total sleep time was shorter during the CN (p < 0.001). Participants reported increased hunger (p = 0.013), tiredness (p < 0.001), sleepiness (p < 0.001), and food cravings (p = 0.002) after the CN. More chocolate was consumed after the CN (p = 0.004). Larger portion sizes selected after the CN resulted in increased energy plated for lunch (p = 0.034). In conclusion, the present study observed increased hunger, food cravings, food reward, and portion sizes of food after a night of modest sleep curtailment. These maladaptive responses could lead to higher energy intake and, ultimately, weight gain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The following question remains open: what has the strongest impact on symptoms of depression, experiencing multiple stressful events, being exposed to a specific stressful event, or having a maladaptive coping style? METHOD We conducted a cross-sectional survey with face-to-face interviews. Data from 2559 randomly-sampled adults living in Japan were analyzed. The participants were asked about stressful events (12 items) experienced in the previous month and their stress-coping strategies (16 items). Presence of symptoms of depression was defined using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the associations of stressful events and stress-coping strategies with symptoms of depression. RESULTS The prevalence of symptoms of depression increased with the number of stressful events. Eight stressful events and five stress-coping strategies were positively associated with symptoms of depression. In the multiple logistic regression analysis for the items that showed a significant association with symptoms of depression, two stressful events ("Health/illness of self" and "Trouble with family members") and two stress-coping strategies ("Smoking" and "Bearing without action") remained significantly associated with symptoms of depression; however, the "dose effect" of the number of stressful events disappeared, suggesting that these stressful events and stress-coping strategies have a stronger association with symptoms of depression compared with experiencing multiple stressful events. LIMITATIONS Since this study was cross-sectional in design, causal relationships could not be determined. CONCLUSION Our findings may indicate the importance of focusing on types of stressful events and coping styles in developing preventive strategies for major depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between unhealthy lifestyles factors and depressive symptoms among the general adult population in Japan. METHOD Participants were randomly selected from the Japanese general adult population. Data from 2334 people aged 20 years or older were analyzed. This cross-sectional survey was conducted in August and September 2009. Participants completed a face-to-face interview about unhealthy lifestyle factors, including lack of exercise, skipping breakfast, a poorly balanced diet, snacking between meals, insufficient sleep, current smoking, alcohol drinking, and obesity. Presence of depressive symptoms was defined as a score of ≥ 16 on the Japanese version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Relationships between unhealthy lifestyle factors and depressive symptoms were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusting for sociodemographic variables and other unhealthy lifestyle factors. RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that insufficient sleep, a poorly balanced diet, snacking between meals and lack of exercise were significantly associated with the prevalence of depressive symptoms, with odds ratios ranging from 1.56 for lack of exercise to 3.98 for insufficient sleep. LIMITATIONS Since this study was a cross-sectional study, causal relationships could not be determined. CONCLUSION These results suggest that promoting a healthy lifestyle focused on sleep, food intake and exercise may be important for individuals with depressive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are several studies that have focused on the relationship between sleep duration and depression, however, only a few prospective studies have centered on the bidirectional relationship between them. This four-year longitudinal study aimed to identify the association between sleep duration and depression in community-dwelling mid-age and elderly individuals. METHODS 10,704 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were included for baseline and four-year follow up. Of these individuals, 7866 and 2956 were used to identify the effects of sleep duration on onset and recurrent depression respectively. 4504 individuals with normal sleep duration at baseline were included to examine the effects of depression on changes of sleep time. The 10-item version of the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale (CESD-10) was used to access depressive symptoms, as well sleep duration was self-reported. RESULTS Participants with short sleep duration (<5 and 5-6 h) had a higher risk of depression onset (OR 1.69 [1.36-2.11], 1.48 [1.19-1.84]) and recurrent depression (OR 1.44 [1.12-1.86], 1.32 [1.00-1.74]) compared to participants with normal sleep durations (7-8 h). Long sleep durations (>9 h) had no significant risks for depression. Males and the elderly (over 60 years-old) were more sensitive to short sleep durations and experienced a higher incidence of depression. Individuals with depression were more likely to have short sleep durations instead of long ones (RRR 1.20 [1.02-1.43]). CONCLUSIONS The present study identified the bidirectional relationship between sleep duration and depression. Short sleep durations were a risk factor for the onset and recurrent depression. Conversely, depression induced short sleep durations rather than excessive sleep durations. Future studies need to focus on identifying the mechanism between sleep duration and depression, and develop additional evidence-based cost-effective interventions to prevent depression and sleep problems.

Abstract
Background Studies on social capital and health outcomes have become common, but the relationship between neighborhood social capital and sleep duration by gender is still unclear. We examined the relationship between neighborhood social capital and sleep duration by gender in adults living in a rural community in Japan. Method We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 12,321 residents aged ≥20 years in a town in Mie Prefecture in January–March 2013. Self-completed questionnaires were collected from the residents (n = 7782; valid participation rate, 63.2%). We used five items to assess the neighborhood social capital (Cronbach’s α = 0.86). We summed up the scores of each item, and then divided the participants into four groups by quartile of total scores of neighborhood social capital (lowest, low, high, and highest). Sleep duration of < 7 h/day was defined as insufficient sleep duration according to previous studies. To adjust for potential confounders, we performed a multiple log-binominal regression analysis and estimated the prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for insufficient sleep. Results Overall 42% of the men and 45% of the women had insufficient sleep. In the men, the lowest group of neighborhood social capital presented a 22% higher prevalence of insufficient sleep (PR 1.22; 95% CIs 1.08–1.38) compared to the highest group of neighborhood social capital. Similarly the low group of neighborhood social capital and the high group of neighborhood social capital had 20 and 19% higher prevalence of insufficient sleep (PR 1.20; 95% CIs 1.06–1.36; PR 1.19; 95% CIs 1.06–1.34, respectively) compared to the highest group of neighborhood social capital. For women there was no significant association between neighborhood social capital and insufficient sleep after controlling for all potential confounders. Conclusion Having lower neighborhood social capital was associated with insufficient sleep among Japanese adults, particularly in the men. This suggests that the context of neighborhood social capital by gender should be considered to promote healthier behaviors with regard to getting enough sleep. Abstract
The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between sleep disturbances and depression in daytime workers using a structured interview. A total of 1,184 daytime workers were enrolled. We evaluated difficulty initiating sleep (DIS), difficulty maintaining sleep (DMS), early morning awakening (EMA), and global insomnia scores (ISs) in all participants. As a result, the prevalences of DIS, DMS, and EMA were 16%, 46%, and 22 %, respectively. IS was significantly correlated with depression score. Additionally, although all IS subscales (i.e., DIS, DMS, and EMA) were significantly associated with depression score, the main factor contributing to depression score was DIS. Thus, the present study reveals that sleep disturbances and especially DIS are associated with depression in daytime workers.

Abstract
Objectives Sleep can be characterized along multiple dimensions. We investigated whether an aggregate measure of sleep health was associated with prevalent and incident clinically significant depression symptoms in a cohort of older women. Methods Participants were older women (mean age 80.1 years) who completed baseline (n = 6485) and follow-up (n = 3806) visits, approximately 6 years apart, in the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF). Self-reported sleep over the past 12 months was categorized as "good" or "poor" across 5 dimensions: satisfaction with sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, mid-sleep time, sleep onset latency, and sleep duration. An aggregate measure of sleep health was calculated by summing the number of "poor" dimensions. Clinically significant depression symptoms were defined as a score ≥6 on the Geriatric Depression Scale. Relationships between sleep health and depression symptoms were evaluated with multivariate logistic regression, adjusting for health measures and medications. Results Individual sleep health dimensions of sleep satisfaction, daytime sleepiness, mid-sleep time, and sleep onset latency were significantly associated with prevalent depression symptoms (odds ratios [OR] = 1.26-2.69). Sleep satisfaction, daytime sleepiness, and sleep onset latency were significantly associated with incident depression symptoms (OR = 1.32-1.79). The number of "poor" sleep health dimensions was associated in a gradient fashion with greater odds of prevalent (OR = 1.62-5.41) and incident (OR = 1.47-3.15) depression symptoms. Conclusion An aggregate, multidimensional measure of sleep health was associated with both prevalent and incident clinically-significant depression symptoms in a gradient fashion. Future studies are warranted to extend these findings in different populations and with different health outcomes.

Abstract
Higher depressive symptoms have been reported in rotating shift workers compared with day workers. Depressive symptoms in adults who do not engage in night work have also been shown to be associated with chronotype and sleep duration. This study examines associations between depressive symptoms, morningness-eveningness (i.e. the degree to which people prefer to be active in the morning or the evening), sleep duration and rotating shift work. Japanese nurses (1252 day workers and 1780 rotating shift workers, aged 20-59) were studied using a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire covered depressive symptoms, morningness-eveningness, sleep habits and demographic characteristics of the participants. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) was used to determine the levels of depressive symptoms. A Japanese version of the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) was used to measure morningness-eveningness. The CES-D score of shift workers was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that of day workers. The MEQ score was significantly (p < 0.05) lower (i.e. greater eveningness) in shift workers than in day workers. Sleep duration on the day shift was significantly (p < 0.05) shorter in shift workers than in day workers. Simple linear regression revealed that the MEQ score, sleep duration on the day shift and current work shift (i.e. rotating shift work) were significantly (p < 0.05) associated with the CES-D score. Multivariate linear regression indicated that greater eveningness and shorter sleep duration were independently associated with higher CES-D scores, while rotating shift work was not. These associations between the MEQ score, the sleep duration and the CES-D score were also confirmed in both day workers and shift workers when the groups were analyzed separately. These results suggest that greater eveningness and shorter sleep duration on the day shift were independently associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms, which may explain associations between rotating shift workers and depressive symptoms. These findings have important implications for the development of novel strategies for preventing poor mental health in day workers and rotating shift workers.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Low or excessive sleep duration has been associated with multiple outcomes, but the biology behind these associations remains elusive. Specifically, genetic studies in children are scarce. In this study, we aimed to: (1) estimate the proportion of genetic variance of sleep duration in children attributed to common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), (2) identify novel SNPs associated with sleep duration in children, and (3) investigate the genetic overlap of sleep duration in children and related metabolic and psychiatric traits. METHODS We performed a population-based molecular genetic study, using data form the EArly Genetics and Life course Epidemiology (EAGLE) Consortium. 10,554 children of European ancestry were included in the discovery, and 1,250 children in the replication phase. RESULTS We found evidence of significant but modest SNP heritability of sleep duration in children (SNP h2 0.14, 95% CI [0.05, 0.23]) using the LD score regression method. A novel region at chromosome 11q13.4 (top SNP: rs74506765, P = 2.27e-08) was associated with sleep duration in children, but this was not replicated in independent studies. Nominally significant genetic overlap was only found (rG = 0.23, P = 0.05) between sleep duration in children and type 2 diabetes in adults, supporting the hypothesis of a common pathogenic mechanism. CONCLUSIONS The significant SNP heritability of sleep duration in children and the suggestive genetic overlap with type 2 diabetes support the search for genetic mechanisms linking sleep duration in children to multiple outcomes in health and disease.

Abstract
This study investigated whether sleep duration and quality were related to life satisfaction (LS) among older Chinese adults and whether depression mediated those relationships. Cross-sectional data from the aging arm of the Rugao Longevity and Aging Study were used. Sleep duration, sleep quality, depression, LS and covariates were analyzed using logistic regressions. To assess the potential mediation of depression on the association between sleep duration and quality and LS, Aroian tests were used. Of 1756 older Chinese adults aged 70-84 years, 90.7% of the men and 83.3% of the women reported being satisfied with their lives. After adjusting for covariates, older adults who slept ≤6h per night were more likely to suffer from life dissatisfaction compared with those who slept 7-8h (OR=2.67, 95% CI 1.86-3.79), and individuals who slept poorly were almost 2 times (OR=2.91, 95% CI 2.16-3.91) more likely to have life dissatisfaction. The Aroian tests confirmed that these relationships were partially mediated by depression (p<0.001). Between short sleep and LS, the mediating effect of depression accounted for 13.9% of the total effects. Moreover, the mediating effect of depression on the association between sleep quality and LS was 13.3%. Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality were inversely associated with LS, and the relationships were partially mediated by depression. Our study suggests that both sleep and depression status are important factors for LS among the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anchoring vignettes are brief texts describing a hypothetical character who illustrates a certain fixed level of a trait under evaluation. This research uses vignettes to elucidate factors associated with sleep disorders in adult Japanese before and after adjustment for reporting heterogeneity in self-reports. This study also evaluates the need for adjusting for reporting heterogeneity in the management of sleep and energy related problems in Japan. METHODS We investigated a dataset of 1002 respondents aged 18 years and over from the Japanese World Health Survey, which collected information through face-to-face interview from 2002 to 2003. The ordered probit model and the Compound Hierarchical Ordered Probit (CHOPIT) model, which incorporated anchoring vignettes, were employed to estimate and compare associations of sleep and energy with socio-demographic and life-style factors before and after adjustment for differences in response category cut-points for each individual. RESULTS The prevalence of self-reported problems with sleep and energy was 53 %. Without correction of cut-point shifts, age, sex, and the number of comorbidities were significantly associated with a greater severity of sleep-related problems. After correction, age, the number of comorbidities, and regular exercise were significantly associated with a greater severity of sleep-related problems; sex was no longer a significant factor. Compared to the ordered probit model, the CHOPIT model provided two changes with a subtle difference in the magnitude of regression coefficients after correction for reporting heterogeneity. CONCLUSION Sleep disorders are common in the general adult population of Japan. Correction for reporting heterogeneity using anchoring vignettes is not a necessary tool for proper management of sleep and energy related problems among Japanese adults. Older age, gender differences in communicating sleep-related problems, the presence of multiple morbidities, and regular exercise should be the focus of policies and clinical practice to improve sleep and energy management in Japan.

Abstract
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society recently released a Consensus Statement regarding the recommended amount of sleep to promote optimal health in adults. This paper describes the methodology, background literature, voting process, and voting results for the consensus statement. In addition, we address important assumptions and challenges encountered during the consensus process. Finally, we outline future directions that will advance our understanding of sleep need and place sleep duration in the broader context of sleep health.
