Abstract
OBJECTIVE Maternal hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) has been suggested to be a predictor of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in the offspring of mothers with pre-gestational diabetes mellitus, although there is little data supporting this contention. We aimed to assess the relationship between maternal HbA1c and postnatal LVH. METHODS We performed a retrospective cohort study of infants born to mothers with pre-gestational diabetes mellitus from 2015 to 2021 at our institution. The primary predictor was maternal HbA1c; neonatal left ventricular mass (LVM) z-score was the primary outcome; LVM z-score was considered as both a continuous variable and a binary variable by dichotomizing at 4 to define LVH. Additionally, we used linear regression to determine the relationship between maternal HbA1c and LVM z-score. RESULTS There were 116 infants who met inclusion (50% female). Mean maternal HbA1c was generally higher in infants with LVH compared to those without LVH (8.2% with LVH vs. 7.2% without LVH [p = 0.009] in the second trimester, and 7.8% vs. 7.0% [p = 0.025] in the third trimester; no significant difference for first trimester). A greater percentage of infants with LVH were intubated (36% vs. 6%, p < 0.001) and had longer average days of hospitalization (9 vs. 5, p = 0.044). Second and third trimester HbA1c was weakly associated with LVM z-score (R2 = 0.063, p < 0.001 and R2 = 0.068, p < 0.001, respectively); first trimester HbA1c was not significantly predictive of LVM z-score. CONCLUSION Second and third trimester HbA1c is modestly predictive of LVH in infants born to mothers with pre-gestational diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Education has been shown to be positively associated with cognitive performance. However, the pathways via lifestyle-related disease through which education is related to cognitive performance have not been sufficiently explored. Diabetes is an important lifestyle-related disease with increasing prevalence worldwide. Low education is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes, while diabetes may also lead to a deterioration in cognitive performance. This study aims to explore if the associations between education and cognitive function is mediated by the diabetes status among older adults. METHODS The data utilized in this study were derived from the first two waves of the Dutch Lifelines Cohort Study (2006-2015). The analyzed sample included 26,131 individuals aged 50 years or above at baseline. The baseline assessment included measurements of educational attainment (exposure) and the potential mediator diabetes. The outcome of cognitive function was assessed using age-standardized reaction times from the psychomotor function and attention tasks, as measured by the Cogstate Brief Battery. The Cogstate Brief Battery was only conducted at the follow-up assessment, not at the baseline assessment. Faster reaction times correspond to higher cognitive performance. The study employed linear and logistic regression models, in addition to a causal mediation approach which estimated the average causal mediation effect (ACME). RESULTS Higher education was associated with a lower risk of diabetes (b= -0.1976, 95%CI= -0.3354; -0.0597) compared to low or middle education as well as with faster reaction times (b= -0.2023, 95%CI= -0.2246; -0.1798), implying better cognitive function. Diabetes was associated with slower reaction times (b = 0.0617, 95%CI = 0.0162; 0.1072). Most importantly, the mediation approach identified a significant indirect effect of education on cognitive function via the diabetes status (ACME= -0.00061, 95%CI= -0.00142; -0.00011). DISCUSSION The findings emphasize the potentially importance of diabetes in explaining the role of education in promoting healthy cognitive function and mitigating the risk of cognitive decline. Early detection and treatment of diabetes may be particularly beneficial for individuals with low or middle levels of education in order to maintain good levels of cognitive function.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Our study aims to uncover glycaemic phenotype heterogeneity in type 1 diabetes. METHODS In the Study of the French-speaking Society of Type 1 Diabetes (SFDT1), we characterised glycaemic heterogeneity thanks to a set of complementary metrics: HbA1c, time in range (TIR), time below range (TBR), CV, Gold score and glycaemia risk index (GRI). Applying the Discriminative Dimensionality Reduction with Trees (DDRTree) algorithm, we created a phenotypic tree, i.e. a 2D visual mapping. We also carried out a clustering analysis for comparison. RESULTS We included 618 participants with type 1 diabetes (52.9% men, mean age 40.6 years [SD 14.1]). Our phenotypic tree identified seven glycaemic phenotypes. The 2D phenotypic tree comprised a main branch in the proximal region and glycaemic phenotypes in the distal areas. Dimension 1, the horizontal dimension, was positively associated with GRI (coefficient [95% CI]) (0.54 [0.52, 0.57]), HbA1c (0.39 [0.35, 0.42]), CV (0.24 [0.19, 0.28]) and TBR (0.11 [0.06, 0.15]), and negatively with TIR (-0.52 [-0.54, -0.49]). The vertical dimension was positively associated with TBR (0.41 [0.38, 0.44]), CV (0.40 [0.37, 0.43]), TIR (0.16 [0.12, 0.20]), Gold score (0.10 [0.06, 0.15]) and GRI (0.06 [0.02, 0.11]), and negatively with HbA1c (-0.21 [-0.25, -0.17]). Notably, socioeconomic factors, cardiovascular risk indicators, retinopathy and treatment strategy were significant determinants of glycaemic phenotype diversity. The phenotypic tree enabled more granularity than traditional clustering in revealing clinically relevant subgroups of people with type 1 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Our study advances the current understanding of the complex glycaemic profile in people with type 1 diabetes and suggests that strategies based on isolated glycaemic metrics might not capture the complexity of the glycaemic phenotypes in real life. Relying on these phenotypes could improve patient stratification in type 1 diabetes care and personalise disease management.

Abstract
Context Diabetes has emerged as a major chronic public health problem throughout the world. Self-management by diabetes patients is very important for controlling blood sugar levels and preventing complications of diabetes. Aims The present study was conducted to study self-management practices among diabetes patients and to analyse socio-demographic factors associated with them. Methods and Materials A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 230 randomly selected diabetes patients in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The self-management practices were measured by the diabetes self-management questionnaire (DSMQ). Statistical Analysis Used The association of the DSMQ score with socio-demographic factors and blood sugar level was analysed by statistical tests like the T-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) test, Tukey's honestly significant difference, and Chi-square test. Results The mean DSMQ score of the diabetes patients was 29.55 ± 5.98. There was a significant difference between the mean DSMQ score and the educational level (P value = 0.009), residential status (P value = 0.037), and duration of diabetes (P value = 0.006). The subcomponent analysis of the DSMQ score revealed that the glucose management score of rural people (9.38 ± 3.36) was significantly higher (P value = 0.006) than that of urban people (8.32 ± 2.46), and the diet control score was significantly higher (P value = 0.02) in patients with normal post-prandial blood sugar (PPBS) (7.64 ± 2.18) than in patients with raised PPBS (6.96 ± 2.12). Conclusions Higher educational level, rural background, and long duration of diabetes were associated with better self-management practices. The patients with normal blood sugar levels showed higher diet control scores than the patients with raised blood sugar levels.

Abstract
Evidence suggests that diabetes is on the rise in India, affecting many people's life satisfaction. Comprehensive estimation of life satisfaction among diabetes patients does not exist in the country. This study examined the effects of socioeconomic status, depression, and diabetes symptoms severity on the life satisfaction of diabetes patients by controlling various demographic variables. It was a cross-sectional study comprising 583 diabetes patients from Punjab, India. Patients were interviewed using a multi-stage purposeful random sampling method. Descriptive analysis and partial least squares structural equation modelling were used in the study to test the hypotheses. Results revealed that socioeconomic status, depression and diabetes symptoms severity significantly influence the life satisfaction of diabetes patients. A 1% drop in diabetes symptoms severity corresponds to a 0.849% increase in life satisfaction, whereas a 1% decrease in depression results in a 0.898% increase in life satisfaction. Patients with higher diabetes symptoms severity were coping with common mental disorders. Women reported higher diabetes symptoms severity and depression than men, resulting in lower life satisfaction. An experimental evaluation of the effects of socioeconomic status, depression and diabetes symptoms severity, and numerous demographic factors on life satisfaction was reported. The findings will help policymakers understand the problem associated with life satisfaction among diabetes patients in the country.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine whether built environment and food metrics are associated with glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We included 14,985 patients with type 2 diabetes using electronic health records from Kaiser Permanente Washington. Patient addresses were geocoded with ArcGIS using King County and Esri reference data. Built environment exposures estimated from geocoded locations included residential unit density, transit threshold residential unit density, park access, and having supermarkets and fast food restaurants within 1600-m Euclidean buffers. Linear mixed effects models compared mean changes of HbA1c from baseline at 1, 3 (primary) and 5 years by each built environment variable. RESULTS Patients (mean age = 59.4 SD = 13.2, 49.5% female, 16.6% Asian, 9.8% Black, 5.5% Latino/Hispanic, 57.1% White, 20% insulin dependent, mean BMI = 32.7±7.7) had an average of 6 HbA1c measures available. Participants in the 1st tertile of residential density (lowest) had a greater decline in HbA1c (-0.42, -0.43, and -0.44 in years 1, 3, and 5 respectively) than those in the 3rd tertile (HbA1c = -0.37 at 1- and 3-years and -0.36 at 5-years; all p-values <0.05). Having any supermarkets within 1600 m of home was associated with a greater decrease in HbA1c at 1-year and 3-years compared to having none (all p-values <0.05). CONCLUSIONS Lower residential density and better proximity to supermarkets may benefit HbA1c control in people with people with type 2 diabetes. However, effects were small and indicate limited clinical significance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease, which requires optimal glycemic control to prevent its ensuing vascular complications. Pathway to optimal glycemic control in T2DM has a complex socio-behavioral construct, especially in vulnerable populations, like slum dwellers, who have reduced health-care access and lower prioritization of health needs. OBJECTIVE The study aimed to map trajectories of glycemic control amongst individuals with T2DM living in urban slums and identify key determinants associated with unfavourable glycaemic trajectory. METHODS This study was a community-based longitudinal study conducted in an urban slum of Bhopal in Central India. Adult patients diagnosed with T2DM and on treatment for more than one year were included. All 326 eligible participants underwent a baseline interview, which captured sociodemographic, personal behavior, medication adherence, morbidity profile, treatment modality, anthropometric and biochemical measurements (HbA1c). Another 6-month follow-up interview was conducted to record anthropometric measurements, HbA1c and treatment modality. Four mixed effect logistic regression models (through theory-driven variable selections) were created with glycemic status as dependent variable and usage of insulin was considered as random effect. RESULTS A total of 231 (70.9%) individuals had unfavorable glycemic control trajectory (UGCT), and only 95 (29.1%) had a favorable trajectory. Individuals with UGCT were more likely to be women, with lower educational status, non-vegetarian food preference, consumed tobacco, had poor drug adherence, and were on insulin. The most parsimonious model identified female gender (2.44,1.33-4.37), tobacco use (3.80,1.92 to 7.54), and non-vegetarian food preference (2.29,1.27 to 4.13) to be associated with UGCT. Individuals with good medication adherence (0.35,0.13 to 0.95) and higher education status (0.37,0.16 to 0.86) were found to be protective in nature. CONCLUSION Unfavorable glycemic control trajectory seems to be an inescapable consequence in vulnerable settings. The identified predictors through this longitudinal study may offer a cue for recognizing a rational response at societal level and adopting strategy formulation thereof.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, the cases of type 2 diabetes are increasing, and this is largely attributed to lifestyle changes. Though diabetes is primarily a metabolic disease determined by biological factors, psychosocial aspects play a crucial role in its progression and management. However, the literature on psychosocial dimensions of diabetes management is minuscule and scattered. OBJECTIVE This synthesis sought to understand the psychosocial facilitators and barriers to type 2 diabetes management and coping among adults. METHODS We have adopted a meta-synthesis to review available qualitative studies using Pub- Med and Scopus databases. Based on inclusion criteria, we have chosen 24 studies published between 2010 and 2023. We have considered studies across countries, among which 63% of the studies included were from Western countries, and most have employed qualitative descriptive design. The selected studies were analyzed thematically using a deductive framework. RESULTS Six themes emerged as the psychosocial barriers and facilitators of managing and coping with type 2 diabetes: 1) cognitive-emotional factors, 2) faith, 3) constraints to behavioural change, 4) social constraints and support, 5) healthcare provider-patient relationship, and 6) awareness. Further, a conceptual framework was developed from the synthesis. CONCLUSION The patients' experiences evident from this synthesis signify the crucial role of psychosocial factors in diabetes management and coping. This evidence emphasizes the need for integrated care so that psychosocial aspects are addressed by healthcare providers and behavioural health professionals, which may lead to the promotion of facilitators and the minimization of barriers.

Abstract
Background Machine learning clustering offers an unbiased approach to better understand the interactions of complex social and clinical variables via integrative subphenotypes, an approach not studied in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Objective We conducted a cluster analysis for a cohort of OHCA survivors to examine the association of clinical and social factors for mortality at 1 year. Methods We used a retrospective observational OHCA cohort identified from Medicare claims data, including area-level social determinants of health (SDOH) features and hospital-level data sets. We applied k-means clustering algorithms to identify subphenotypes of beneficiaries who had survived an OHCA and examined associations of outcomes by subphenotype. Results We identified 27,028 unique beneficiaries who survived to discharge after OHCA. We derived 4 distinct subphenotypes. Subphenotype 1 included a distribution of more urban, female, and Black beneficiaries with the least robust area-level SDOH measures and the highest 1-year mortality (2375/4417, 53.8%). Subphenotype 2 was characterized by a greater distribution of male, White beneficiaries and had the strongest zip code-level SDOH measures, with 1-year mortality at 49.9% (4577/9165). Subphenotype 3 had the highest rates of cardiac catheterization at 34.7% (1342/3866) and the greatest distribution with a driving distance to the index OHCA hospital from their primary residence >16.1 km at 85.4% (8179/9580); more were also discharged to a skilled nursing facility after index hospitalization. Subphenotype 4 had moderate median household income at US $51,659.50 (IQR US $41,295 to $67,081) and moderate to high median unemployment at 5.5% (IQR 4.2%-7.1%), with the lowest 1-year mortality (1207/3866, 31.2%). Joint modeling of these features demonstrated an increased hazard of death for subphenotypes 1 to 3 but not for subphenotype 4 when compared to reference. Conclusions We identified 4 distinct subphenotypes with differences in outcomes by clinical and area-level SDOH features for OHCA. Further work is needed to determine if individual or other SDOH domains are specifically tied to long-term survival after OHCA.

Abstract
Introduction Access to diabetes management programs is crucial to control the increasing contribution of diabetes to the global burden of disease. However, evidence regarding whether such services are equally accessible for all population groups is still lacking, particularly in the context of low-middle-income countries and under the National Health Insurance (NHI). This study aimed to assess the extent of socioeconomic and geographical inequalities in the use, quality, and outcome of a diabetes management program for beneficiaries of Indonesian NHI. Methods A total of 628 participants in the NHI diabetes management program in Banyumas District, Indonesia, were included in 2021 in this cross-sectional study. The main variables measured were regular visits to primary care facilities, standard medication, and glycemic control. The rate difference and rate ratio of age-sex standardized prevalence rates, as well as multiple logistic regressions, were used to measure the extent of inequalities. Results Around 70% of participants regularly visited primary care facilities and received standard medication, but only 35% had good glycemic control. Highly educated participants were more likely to have regular visits compared to low-educated participants (odds ratio [OR] 1.92; 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.04-3.56). Based on employment and type of NHI beneficiaries, a small extent and even reverse inequalities were found although these findings were insignificant statistically. Urban residents were also more likely to have regular visits (OR 6.61; 95% CI: 2.90-15.08), receive standard medication (OR 9.73; 95% CI: 3.66-25.90), and have good glycemic control (OR 3.85; 95% CI: 1.68-8.83) compared to rural residents. Conclusions Evidence on the extent of socioeconomic inequalities is inconclusive but substantial geographical inequalities in the use, quality, and outcome of diabetes management programs exist among Indonesian NHI beneficiaries. Future implementation policies of the program should consider particularly the geographical characteristics of participants to avoid and reduce inequalities and, hence, the disease burden of diabetes.

Abstract
Background Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death globally and diabetes mellitus (DM) is the fourth main contributor. The incidence of its complications could be reduced with high-quality care and good glycaemic control. Treatment satisfaction is an important aspect of quality of care, especially in treating chronic diseases like DM. This study sought to determine the satisfaction of diabetics with their care and to identify the relationship between patients' satisfaction and diabetic control alongside other associated factors. Methodology The study was a descriptive cross-sectional, hospital-based study. Respondents were admitted into the study based on inclusion criteria and selected using a systematic random sampling technique. Blood samples for fasting plasma glucose and total cholesterol were collected. Diabetic Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire and the Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire were used to assess treatment satisfaction. The SPSS version 21.0 was used for data analysis and linear regression was used to determine the factors influencing satisfaction. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results The mean total Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction score was 33.8 ± 8.2 and the mean total Short-Form Patient Satisfaction score was found to be 16.8 ± 3.6. There was a statistically significant difference between the mean satisfaction scores with treatment of diabetes mellitus and age groups (p < 0.001). There was also a statistically significant association between DM treatment satisfaction with the use of oral antidiabetic agents (p = 0.043) and the presence of complications (P < 0.001). Conclusion There was a significant correlation between patient satisfaction scores and other factors like accessibility and convenience, time spent with doctors, and so on. In conclusion, the study identified the use of oral anti-diabetic agents, and the presence of complications, among others as factors affecting patient satisfaction. This study, therefore, suggests improving the practice of patient-centered medicine by increasing patient satisfaction through addressing these factors.

Abstract
AIM This study aims to assess the prevalence and associated factors of depression among diabetic patients in a cross-sectional sample and perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the extant studies to date. METHODS A face-to-face semi-structured interview of established diabetic patients was conducted in four districts of Bangladesh between May 24 to June 24, 2022, and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) was used to detect depression. PRISMA guidelines were followed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis, with Bangladeshi articles published until 3rd February 2023. RESULTS The prevalence of depression among 390 diabetic patients was 25.9%. Having secondary education and using both insulin and medication increased the likelihood of depression, whereas being a business professional and being physically active reduced the likelihood of depression. The systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that the pooled estimated prevalence of depression was 42% (95% CI 32-52%). Females had a 1.12-times higher risk of depression than males (OR = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.99 to 1.25, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Two-fifths of diabetic patients were depressed, with females at higher risk. Since depression among diabetic patients increases adverse outcomes, improved awareness and screening methods should be implemented to detect and treat depression in diabetic patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Various bio-psychosocial mechanisms underlying the link between anxiety, depression and cardiovascular disease risk, remain unknown. We investigated the role of irrational beliefs in conjunction with anxiety and depression in the 10-year cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence, and the effect of biochemical and socio-behavioral factors. DESIGN 853[453 men (45 ± 13 years) and 400 women (44 ± 18 years)] from the ATTICA study (2002-2012) and without evidence of CVD were assessed. METHODS The Irrational Beliefs Inventory (IBI), the Zung Self-Rating-Depression-Scale (ZDRS) and the State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory (STAI) were used for the assessments. Incidence of CVD was defined according to the International Coding Diseases (ICD)-10 criteria. RESULTS Participants with high irrational beliefs and anxiety symptoms had a 138% greater risk of developing CVD during the 10-year follow-up (2.38; 95%CI 1.75, 3.23) as compared to those without anxiety. Among others, C-reactive protein, interleukin-6 and total antioxidant capacity were mediators in the tested association. Interaction of irrational beliefs and depression was not associated with the 10-year CVD in all models. CONCLUSIONS Inflammation and oxidative stress, partially explained the associations between irrational beliefs and anxiety in predicting CVD risk. These findings advance psychological research in the area of primary prevention of mental health and cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
The primary method for preventing health and health-related problems in diabetic people is glycemic control. Numerous studies have documented the importance of glycemic control and the factors that influence it. However, the results are dispersed. This study sought to identify the prevalence of poor glycemic control and associated factors in Ethiopia. Findings will be crucial to reduce the burden of poor glycemic control. Comprehensive search was performed from databases: PubMed, Global Health, CINAHL, IRIS, and FSTA. Gray literature sources were also explored. This document was prepared based on the PRISMA flowchart. The protocol is registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022296583). STATA software was used for data analyses and I2 test with Cochrane Q statistics, and forest plot were used to verify heterogeneity. When the I2 value was higher than 50% and the p-value was 0.05, heterogeneity was deemed significant. To confirm publication bias, a funnel plot with an Egger's regression test was performed. The factors related to poor glycemic control were reported using pooled odds ratios (POR) and a 95% confidence interval. In this study, 46 papers totaling 15 457 people were used to calculate the pooled estimates. It was determined that 32.6% (95% CI: 28.3, 36.9) and 61.92% (95% CI: 57.92, 65.92) of the subjects, respectively, had good and poor glycemic control. Being male protected against poor glycemic control, while poor diet adherence, lack of exercise, poor adherence to anti-diabetic medications, and smoking increased the likelihood of poor glycemic control. Lack of formal education, no family history of diabetes, lack of glucometer for blood glucose monitoring, comorbidity, being overweight and prolonged length of stay with diabetes all contributed to poor glycemic control. Ethiopia had a fairly high rate of poor glycemic control. The main determinants are lifestyle factors. Therefore, it is important to focus on behavioral interventions.

Looking at Diabetes-Related Distress through a New Lens: The Socio-Ecological Health Model. ENDOCRINES 2022. Abstract
Diabetes-related distress (DRD) is defined as an emotional state experienced by people with diabetes (PWD) who are worried about their disease management, the emotional burden from the condition, and/or potential difficulties accessing care or support. The psychosocial aspect of diabetes management is a factor that directly influences patients’ well-being as well as the chronic management of the condition yet is not a primary clinical problem being addressed within the healthcare setting. This review advocates for a re-evaluation and subsequent adjustment of the current DRD screening methodology by implementing the five primary components (Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Organizational, Community, and Public Policy) of the Socio-Ecological Model of Health (SEMH), bridging the gaps from a public-health perspective. We searched two electronic databases for studies published in the United States from 1995 to 2020 reporting the effects of social determinants of health (SDOH) on DRD. Articles that contained at least one of the five elements of the SEMH and focused on adults aged 18 years or older were included. SDOH, which include circumstances where individuals grow, work, and age, are highly influenced by external factors, such as the distribution of wealth, power, and resources. Current DRD screening tools lack the capacity to account for all major components of SDOH in a comprehensive manner. By applying the SEMH as a theory-based framework, a novel DRD screening tool addressing sex, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background should be implemented to better improve diabetes management outcomes. By exploring the relationships between each level of the SEMH and DRD, healthcare professionals will be better equipped to recognize potential stress-inducing factors for individuals managing diabetes. Further efforts should be invested with the goal of developing a novel screening tool founded on the all-encompassing SEMH in order to perpetuate a more comprehensive diabetes treatment plan to address barriers within the SDOH framework.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social determinants of health have a significant impact on health outcomes. However, the complexity and interaction of multiple factors influencing glycemic control remain understudied. PURPOSE This study examined associations of socioeconomic position (income, education, and occupation), environmental (physical activity facilities, neighborhood social cohesion, neighborhood problem, and violence), behavioral (physical activity, nutrition, and smoking), and psychological factors (depressive symptoms, stress, and discrimination) with glycemic control (hemoglobin A1c [A1c]) using the World Health Organization Social Determinants of Health framework in African American adults with type 2 diabetes. METHODS A secondary data analysis was conducted using a longitudinal cohort of 1,240 African American adults with type 2 diabetes who participated in the community-based Jackson Heart Study. Socioeconomic position, environmental, behavioral, and psychological factors were measured using validated instruments in the Jackson Heart Study. Longitudinal structural equation modeling was used with glycemic control (A1c) collected over time (Exams 1-3) as the study outcome. RESULTS Our study presents the complex interplay of socioeconomic determinants of health and glycemic control over time. Higher socioeconomic position (higher income, higher level of education, and professional occupation) was directly associated with improvement in glycemic control over time. An association of socioeconomic position on glycemic control mediated through health behavior factors was also observed. CONCLUSIONS In this analysis, socioeconomic position components were determinants of glycemic control in African American adults with type 2 diabetes. Future studies aimed at reducing health disparities and achieving equality of outcomes in this population will benefit from embedding socioeconomic position components into their design.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an increased burden of diabetes globally including in sub-Saharan Africa. The literature shows that glycaemic control among type 2 diabetes patients is poor in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Understanding the factors influencing glycaemic control in this region is therefore important to develop interventions to optimize glycaemic control. We carried out a systematic review to determine the prevalence and factors associated with glycaemic control in sub-Saharan Africa to inform the development of a glycaemic control framework in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. METHODS We searched five databases (African Index Medicus, Africa-Wide Information, Global Health, PubMed, and Web of Science) using the following search terms: type-2 diabetes, glycaemic control, and sub-Saharan Africa. Only peer-reviewed articles from January 2012 to May 2022 were eligible for this review. Two reviewers, independently, selected articles, assessed their methodological quality using Joanna Briggs checklists, and extracted data. A meta-analysis was performed to estimate the prevalence of glycaemic control. Factors associated with glycaemic control were presented as a narrative synthesis due to heterogeneity as assessed by the I2. RESULTS A total of 74 studies, involving 21,133 participants were included in the review. The pooled prevalence of good glycaemic control was 30% (95% CI:27.6-32.9). The glycaemic control prevalence ranged from 10-60%. Younger and older age, gender, lower income, absence of health insurance, low level of education, place of residence, family history of diabetes, longer duration of diabetes, pill burden, treatment regimen, side effects, use of statins or antihypertensives, alcohol consumption, smoking, presence of comorbidities/complications, and poor management were associated with poor glycaemic control. On the other hand, positive perceived family support, adequate coping strategies, high diabetes health literacy, dietary adherence, exercise practice, attendance to follow-up, and medication adherence were associated with good glycaemic control. CONCLUSION Suboptimal glycaemic control is pervasive among patients with type-2 diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa and poses a significant public health challenge. While urgent interventions are required to optimize glycaemic control in this region, these should consider sociodemographic, lifestyle, clinical, and treatment-related factors. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS It is unclear whether socio-economic status (SES) is associated with glycaemic control in people with recently diagnosed diabetes. The aim was to investigate whether SES is related to haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) during the first year after diagnosis in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and if metabolic, quality of care or mental factors may explain the association. METHODS In the German Diabetes Study, people with type 1 (n = 274, median age 36 [25th; 75th percentile: 28; 48] years) and type 2 diabetes (n = 424, 54 [47; 60] years) underwent detailed metabolic characterisation within the first year after diagnosis. SES was documented using a standardised questionnaire. Associations between SES and HbA1c were assessed using multivariable linear regression and restricted cubic spline regression analyses. Additional covariables were patient characteristics, laboratory measurements, health behaviour, quality of care and depression variables. Models were separately fitted for diabetes type, SES and its dimensions (income, education, occupation). RESULTS Higher SES score was associated with lower HbA1c (-0.7 mmol/mol per unit increase in SES, 95% CI: -1.1; -0.2 mmol/mol [-0.1%, 95% CI: -0.1; 0.0%]) in people with type 1 diabetes. Included covariates did not attenuate this association. In people with type 2 diabetes, effect estimates were close to zero indicating no relevant difference. CONCLUSION Socio-economic inequalities in HbA1c already exist during the first year after diagnosis in people with type 1 diabetes. The absence of association between glycaemic control and SES in type 2 diabetes could be due to the lower complexity of diabetes therapy compared to type 1 diabetes.

Abstract
Objectives An association between type-2 diabetes mellitus and cognitive decline is well known. Additionally, type 2 diabetes is known to be more physically burdensome for minorities. However, the combined impact of both ethnicity and diabetes on cognition is still not clear. Methods Data from the 2014 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) was used in this study to compare the cognitive functioning of non-Hispanic White (n = 10,658) and White Mexican/Mexican American (n = 847) individuals, age 50+ years, with or without type 2 diabetes. Cognitive functioning was measured by a composite of three constructs (serial 7 s, immediate, delayed recall). Ethnic groups and diabetes status were examined concerning cognitive functioning. Results A Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) indicated significant main effects for ethnicity (F(3,11,496) = 11.15, p < .001) and diabetes status (F(3,11,496) = 3.15, p < .024), with Mexican Americans and those with diabetes exhibiting worse cognitive performance than non-Hispanic Whites and individuals without diabetes. There were significant effects for all covariates. A step-wise multiple regression indicated that education, age, depression, ethnicity and diabetes status accounted for a combined 28.4% variance in the cognitive performance composite. Conclusions Results found that education contributes significantly to variation of cognitive performance. The impact of education could be related to various possibilities. However, the impact of health literacy is a likely component, which has a positive relationship with level of education. Individuals with higher health literacy are more conscientious in health actions (e.g., exhibit regular self-care, glucose monitoring, and foot care). Therefore, the study results indicate it is likely that the duration of diabetes, and diabetes management (e.g., effective control of blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipids), contributing to cognitive decline. Cognitive screening at routine doctor visits is encouraged, particularly for Mexican/Mexican Americans, as the current study found support for ethnic minority vulnerability to the negative impacts of diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patient perceptions of healthcare ratings, diabetes self-efficacy, and diabetes management play a role in diabetes-related outcomes, particularly among women of childbearing age. Guided by a modified Interaction Model of Client Health Behavior framework, the objective was to compare differences in perceptions of health care ratings, diabetes self-efficacy, and diabetes management among non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic White women of childbearing age. METHODS The sample comprised 7 years (2012-2018) of Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data. The sample was limited to women of childbearing age (18-45 years) who have ever been told they had diabetes (n = 691; weighted n = 932,426). Dependent variables were health care rating, diabetes self-efficacy, and diabetes care management. The key independent variable was race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, non-Hispanic White). We adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics and perceived health status using multiple linear and multivariable logistic regressions. RESULTS Non-Hispanic Black women (41.6%) self-reported their health status as fair or poor (44.9%) compared to non-Hispanic White (33.3%) and Hispanic (37.6%). In adjusted models, non-Hispanic Black women had 46% lower odds (95% CI = 0.31, 0.94) of reporting high health care ratings compared to non-Hispanic White women. Non-Hispanic Black women had 43% lower odds (95% CI = 0.35, 0.95) and Hispanic women had 47% lower odds (95% CI = 0.34, 0.80) of reporting higher levels of diabetes care management than non-Hispanic White women. CONCLUSIONS This study provides important information regarding diabetes health care ratings, self-efficacy, and self-management behaviors. Because of the increasing prevalence of diabetes among women of childbearing age, it is important to improve health care particularly for racial/ethnic minority women with diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular diseases are the most causes of mortality and morbidity among diabetes mellitus (DM) patients. Electrocardiographic (ECG) changes are common in the early course of the disease. Little is known about the electrocardiographic abnormalities among type 2 DM patients in Ethiopia. This study determined the overall prevalence, its patterns, and the associated factors of ECG abnormalities among people living with T2DM in Amhara National Regional State referral hospitals, Ethiopia. METHODS A multicenter institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from 01 April to 30 May 2021. A simple random sampling and systematic sampling techniques were employed to select the referral hospitals and study participants, respectively. A digital electrocardiograph was used to measure the ECG parameters and the other data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Epi-data version-4.6 and Stata-14 were used for data entry and statistical analysis, respectively. The descriptive statistics were presented with tables and graphs. A binary logistic regression model was fitted to identify associated factors of ECG abnormality. In the final model, statistical significance was decided at p≤0.05, and the strength of association was indicated using an adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI. RESULTS Two-hundred and fifty-eight participants (response rate = 99.6%) were included for the analysis. The prevalence of overall ECG abnormality was 45% (95% CI: 39, 51%). On the basis of the electrocardiographic patterns, 57 (21.1%; 95% CI: 14.6, 32.6%) were presented with T-wave abnormality, 36 (14%; 95% CI: 10.1, 18.8%) left axis deviation, and 24 (9.3% [6.3, 13.5%]) sinus tachycardia. Higher monthly income (> 90$) (AOR = 0.51 [0.31, 0.83]), over 10 years duration of DM (AOR = 4.5[1.05, 18.94]), hypertension (AOR = 3.9 [1.6, 9.40]), fasting blood sugar of ≥ 130 mg/dl (AOR = 5.01[2.13, 12.20]), and overweight (AOR = 2.65[1.17, 5.98]) were statistically significant factors of overall ECG abnormality. CONCLUSIONS Nearly, half of the participants had at least one ECG abnormality. Higher-income, prolonged disease duration, hypertension, higher fasting blood sugar, and overweight were significantly associated with ECG abnormality. The findings of this study suggest the need to institute routine ECG screening for all T2DM patients to reduce ECG abnormalities and further complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is increasing attention on association between eating patterns and diabetes control following global changes in eating patterns. There had been very limited research on the eating patterns of diabetic patients with employment, although working age population has seen the highest increase in diabetes incidence. This study aimed to identify workplace eating patterns in relation to glycaemic control among type 2 diabetic patients with employment. METHODS This is a sequential mixed-methods study. The exploratory qualitative study involved focus group interviews with 31 type 2 diabetic patients with employment, which guided the design of a subsequent cross-sectional investigation involving 185 patients with employment. Thematic analysis was conducted on the qualitative data to identify workplace eating patterns most relevant to glycaemic control. Hierarchical multiple linear regression was performed to examine association between workplace eating pattern and glycaemic control, proxied by HbA1c. RESULTS The focus group interviews identified frequency in the consumption of home-prepared meals (HPM) and meal hours as the major workplace eating patterns that affected glycaemic control. The cross-sectional study confirmed that regular consumption of HPM at workplace could explain variance of HbA1c, independent of socio-demographic factors, lifestyle factors and disease condition, with R2 = 0.146, F(14, 170) = 2.075, p = 0.015; adjusted R2 = 0.076. Patients who were female, in non-skilled occupation, on shift, with fixed work location and had break during work were more likely to consume HPM. CONCLUSIONS Consumption of HPM at workplace should be promoted to facilitate better glycaemic control by type 2 diabetic patients with employment, possibly through more practical dietary advice, and workplace accommodation in terms of space and facilities. In the context of COVID-19 pandemic, consumption of HPM also meant additional protection for diabetic patients through reducing close contact exposures in restaurants.

Abstract
AIM To examine trends in basal insulin prescribing in older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a population-based study of adults aged 66 years or older with treated diabetes from 1 January 2010 to 30 September 2020 in Ontario, Canada. We examined prevalent and incident prescriptions for human NPH, Levemir, glargine-100, Basaglar, glargine-300, and degludec insulin over 43 study intervals. We present trends in those with CKD, and in a subgroup, by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). To provide context for prescribing, we provide demographics, co-morbidities, and the healthcare utilization of included patients. RESULTS In CKD, use of basal insulin was about 2-fold higher than in the general treated diabetes cohort. Prescriptions for NPH declined over time, while prescriptions for Levemir and glargine-100 increased until 2018 then decreased. Following drug formulary approval (September 2018), prescriptions for glargine-300 and degludec increased substantially. Incident prescriptions for basal insulin in CKD declined over time; however, in those with an eGFR of less than 30 ml/min/1.73m2 , rates remained stable. In recent years, rates of degludec and glargine-300 have rivalled glargine-100. CONCLUSIONS In an era of new oral and injectable diabetes medications, the use of basal insulin has declined in older adults with CKD. However, in those with more advanced CKD, basal insulin, particularly newer analogues, remain a mainstay treatment.

Abstract
In order to determine the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), we retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 1,430 patients in a large tertiary health care network in New York. These patients underwent liver biopsy over a 10-year period and were included in our study if they had evidence of NAFLD/NASH on liver biopsy. Zip codes were used to obtain data necessary to derive the social deprivation index (SDI) from the US Bureau of the Census. The high-SDI group was compared to the low-SDI group. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed to assess association between socioeconomic factors and NAFLD parameters, including presence of NASH (NAFLD activity score >4), moderate to severe steatosis (>33%), and significant fibrosis (S2-S4). We included 614 patients with NAFLD/NASH; the median SDI was 31.5. Hemoglobin A1c values were higher in the high-SDI group compared to the low-SDI group (6.46 vs. 6.12, P = 0.02). Socioeconomic factors, such as private versus public health care, percentage being foreign born, percentage without a car, percentage with higher needs (<5 years old and >65 years old), and percentage currently living in renter-occupied and crowded housing units, showed statistically significant associations in predicting NASH. After adjusting for patient age, sex, race, body mass index, and diabetes, we saw a significant association between four or more socioeconomic parameters in predicting NASH (odds ratio [OR], 1.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.099-2.856; P = 0.0190) and six or more socioeconomic parameters in predicting severe steatosis (OR, 1.498; 95% CI, 1.031-2.176; P = 0.0338) but no significant correlation between the number of socioeconomic parameters and significant fibrosis. Conclusion: Greater number of socioeconomic determinants (four or more) are associated with greater severity of NASH. Awareness of NAFLD/NASH needs to be raised in communities with high socioeconomic deprivation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Over the past decades prevalence of diabetes has increased in Iran and other countries. This study aimed to update the prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in Iran and to determine associated sociodemographic risk factors, as well as diabetes awareness and control. METHODS This is a nationally representative cross-sectional survey that included 163,770 Iranian adults aged 35-70 years, from different ethnic backgrounds, between 2014 and 2020. Diabetes was diagnosed at fasting blood sugar of ≥ 6.99 mmol/L (126 mg/dL), or receiving blood glucose-lowering treatment. Multivariable logistic regression was applied to detect determinants associated with prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes, as well as predictors of diabetes awareness and glycemic control. RESULTS Sex- and age-standardized prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes was 15.0% (95% CI 12.6-17.3) and 25.4% (18.6-32.1), respectively. Among patients with diabetes, 79.6% (76.2-82.9) were aware of their diabetes. Glycemic control was achieved in 41.2% (37.5-44.8) of patients who received treatment. Older age, obesity, high waist to hip ratio (WHR), and specific ethnic background were associated with a significant risk of diabetes and prediabetes. Higher awareness of diabetes was observed in older patients, married individuals, those with high WHR, and individuals with high wealth score. Moreover, glycemic control was significantly better in women, obese individuals, those with high physical activity, educational attainment, and specific ethnic background. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in Iranian adults. High proportion of uncontrolled patients require particular initiatives to be integrated in the health care system.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus and its complications carry broad financial misfortune to the diabetic patients and their family, to the well-being frameworks, and to the public economies through direct clinical expenses and decreased work efficiency. The present study systematically reviewed the possible factors that are influencing self-care behavior of disadvantaged diabetic patients that contribute heavily to the management of this chronic illness. Structured searches were conducted on PubMed, ScienceDirect, and manual searches on Google Scholar for articles published between the years 2000 and 2020. The review was limited to a particular time frame due to the change in WHO criteria for diagnosis and classification of abnormal glucose tolerance. Initially, 96858 articles were identified, and following the screening and full-text reading, 10 studies that met the inclusion criteria were chosen for systematic review. Seven studies had reported the factors influencing self-care behavior among disadvantaged diabetic population. Three studies had reported the importance of intervention strategies and its impact on self-care behavior among them. Findings show that self-care management of socio-economically disadvantaged people entails dimensions including diabetes knowledge, lack of physical activities, social support, lack of access to services, life disruptions, denial of illness, societal attitudes, responsibilities, and treatment costs. It was additionally discovered that diabetes self-management support mediations are successful in drawing in lower economy patients, tending to contending life needs and hindrances to self-care, and encouraging behavior change. Taken together, future methodologically efficacious studies that establish health promoting behaviors and explorations of the factors influencing self-care behaviors of disadvantaged diabetic patients are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the lived (narrative) experience of obesity and/or diabetes mellitus within focus groups consisting of individuals and community support persons residing in Genesee County, Michigan. DESIGN Qualitative study, using Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) methodology to design and conduct focus group interviews. SAMPLE Nineteen participants from faith-based organizations (FBOs) in Genesee County (74.5% Caucasian, 3.0% Hispanic American). MEASUREMENTS Semi-structured narrative focus group interviews, using thematic coding and qualitative analysis software (Otter.com). RESULTS Participants from diverse FBOs revealed barriers that prevent them from reaching their weight goals and preventing or controlling diabetes. A shared theme included the concern that providers do not actively inquire about patient concerns at appointments, and they fail to offer practical strategies beyond pharmaceutical interventions. CONCLUSION Focus group interviews with community residents revealed issues and barriers patients and their support persons face in health care experiences. Utilizing CBPR (methodology) is an opportunity for advanced practice nurses (health care professionals) to co-create strategies and interventions with the community that can assist them in successfully reaching their weight loss and diabetes prevention goals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In the EDITION clinical trial programme, patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) receiving insulin glargine (IGlar) U300 required 10-15% more insulin than those receiving IGlar U100. This study sought to determine whether this difference was apparent in real-world practice. METHODS In this observational, retrospective cohort study, electronic medical records in the Big-Pac® database (Real Life Data) relating to adult insulin-naïve patients with T2DM who initiated IGlar U100 or U300 treatment in Spain in 2016-2017 and remained on treatment for 18 months were selected. IGlar U100- and U300-treated patients were matched 1:1 (propensity score matching). The primary analysis compared changes from baseline in mean daily IGlar dose (U and U/kg) at 6 (± 2), 12 (± 2) and 18 (± 2) months between cohorts (paired t tests). Changes in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and weight were analysed descriptively. RESULTS The IGlar U100 and U300 cohorts included 556 matched pairs (46.9% female) with the following mean (standard deviation) values at baseline, respectively: age 63.6 (12.8) versus 63.7 (11.9) years; years since diagnosis 9.5 (1.4) versus 9.5 (1.3); HbA1c 8.8 (1.3) versus 8.7 (1.5) %; weight 84.6 (16.9) versus 84.7 (17.1) kg. Mean IGlar dose at baseline was 0.19 U/kg/day (both cohorts). Patients receiving IGlar U300 showed a greater increase from baseline in IGlar dose at 6, 12 and 18 months [mean dose (U/kg/day) 5.1%, 10.3% and 12.8% greater, respectively, in IGlar U300-treated patients]. Mean HbA1c was 8.1% in both cohorts at 18 months. Mean (SD) weight at 18 months with IGlar U100 and IGlar300 was 86.8 (17.0) kg and 85.0 (17.1) kg, respectively. CONCLUSION In real-world practice, insulin dose was significantly higher in IGlar U300-treated than U100-treated patients at 6, 12 and 18 months, with similar reductions in HbA1c. At equal IGlar price/unit in Spain, the increased dose requirements of IGlar U300 would result in higher costs.

Irrational beliefs trigger depression and anxiety symptoms, and associated with increased inflammation and oxidative stress markers in the 10-year diabetes mellitus risk: the ATTICA epidemiological study. Abstract
Purpose To investigate the combined role of irrational beliefs, anxiety and depression in the 10-year incidence of type 2 diabetes, and the underlying effect of biochemical, and socio-behavioural factors. Methods Within the context of the ATTICA cohort study (2002-2012), 853 participants without evidence of CVD [453 men (45 ± 13 years) and 400 women (44 ± 18 years)] underwent psychological evaluation through the Irrational Beliefs Inventory (IBI) (range 0-88), the Zung Self-Rating-Depression-Scale (ZDRS) and the State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory (STAI). Diagnosis of diabetes at follow-up examination was based on the criteria of the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Results Mean IBI score was 53 ± 10 in men and 51 ± 11 in women (p = 0.68). Participants with high irrational beliefs who also had anxiety symptoms had a 93% excess risk of developing diabetes during the 10-year follow-up (Hazard Ratio 1.93; 95%CI 1.34, 2.78) as compared to those without anxiety. Moreover, diabetes risk was 73% higher among individuals with high levels of irrational beliefs and depression as compared to those where depression was absent (1.73; 1.21, 2.46). Lower education status, family history of diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, high BMI, as well as tumor necrosis factor and total antioxidant capacity were revealed as mediating risk factors related to the tested associations. Conclusion Irrational beliefs among apparently healthy adults trigger depression and anxiety symptomatology, and through the increased inflammation and oxidative stress profile, were associated with increased diabetes risk. This observation moves psychological research a step forward in supporting and guiding primary prevention of mental health and metabolic conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medication adherence (MA) is critical to successful chronic disease management. It is not clear how social determinants of health (SDH) impact MA. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the evidence on the relationship between SDH and MA. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of the literature using a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) format. A literature search was performed using three databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Clinical Trials Register in December of 2018. Included studies were completed in the USA, included adults aged 18 years and older, measured at least one social determinant of health, and medication adherence was the primary outcome measure. Data from included full texts were independently extracted using a standardized data extraction form. We then conducted a meta-analysis and pooled the odds ratios from the included studies for each social determinant as well as for all SDH factors collectively. RESULTS A total of 3137 unduplicated abstracts were identified from our database searches. A total of 173 were selected for full text review after evaluating the abstract. A total of 29 articles were included for this systematic review. Economic-related SDH factors and MA were mostly commonly examined. The meta-analysis revealed a significant relationship between food insecurity (aOR = 0.56; 95% CI 0.42-0.7), housing instability (aOR = 0.64; 95% CI 0.44-0.93), and social determinants overall (aOR = 0.75; 95% CI 0.65-0.88) and medication adherence. DISCUSSION Food insecurity and housing instability most consistently impacted medication adherence. Although included studies were heterogenous and varied widely in SDH and MA measurements, adverse social determinants overall were significantly associated with lower MA. The relationship between SDH and MA warrants more attention and research by health care providers and policymakers.

Abstract
Rational & Objective Electronic health records can be leveraged to assess quality-of-care measures in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Neighborhood socioeconomic status could be a potential barrier to receiving appropriate evidence-based therapy and follow-up. We examined whether neighborhood socioeconomic status is independently associated with quality of care received by patients with CKD. Study Design Observational study using electronic health record data. Setting & Participants Retrospective study of patients seen at a health care system in the 7-county Minneapolis/St Paul area. Exposures Census tract socioeconomic status measures (wealth, income, and education). Outcomes Indicators of CKD quality of care: (1) prescription for angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor/angiotensin receptor blocker in patients with stage ≥ 3 CKD or stage 1 or 2 CKD with urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) > 300 mg/d, (2) UACR measurement among patients with laboratory-based CKD (estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.72 m2), and (3) CKD identified on the problem list or coded for at an encounter among patients with laboratory-based CKD. Analytic Approach Multilevel Poisson regression with robust error variance with a random intercept at the census tract level. Results Of the 16,776 patients who should be receiving an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor/angiotensin receptor blocker, 65% were prescribed these medications. Among patients with laboratory-based CKD (n = 25,097), UACR was measured in 27% and CKD was identified in the electronic health record in 55%. We found no independent association between any neighborhood socioeconomic status measures and CKD quality-of-care indicators. Limitations 1 health care system and selection bias. Conclusions We found no association of neighborhood socioeconomic status with quality of CKD care in our cohort. However, adherence to CKD guidelines is low, indicating an opportunity to improve care for all patients regardless of neighborhood socioeconomic status.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to explore patient perspectives on socioeconomic barriers related to diabetes self-management and interventions to address these barriers. METHODS Focus groups (n = 8) were conducted with a diverse sample of adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D; n = 53). Researchers used a semistructured moderator guide; focus groups were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Researchers employed the constant comparison method for qualitative content analysis and utilized Atlas.ti (Version 8.1.1) to digitalize the analytic process. RESULTS Findings revealed 3 primary themes: (1) Existing food and nutrition resources are insufficient to support healthy eating for diabetes; (2) healthy eating is critical for diabetes management, but socioeconomic circumstances make doing so challenging; and (3) participants supported several broad categories of preferred intervention strategies. First, they endorsed lifestyle intervention informed by socioeconomic status (SES; eg, focusing on food resource management, sensitive health coaching and nutritional counseling). Next, they expressed enthusiasm for group-based learning opportunities, such as cooking classes and support groups with similar SES peers. Finally, they suggested healthy food access resources. CONCLUSIONS Participant suggestions should be incorporated into intervention development. Ultimately, these interventional strategies should be tested and refined to help improve health for individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
French Guiana is a territory located more than 7000 km from France. It is also the largest French territory, with almost 84000 km2 and 90% of it is covered by forest. Some municipalities are isolated due to the scarcity of transportation and the poor road infrastructure. The population is extremely diverse ethnically and culturally, and includes more than thirty ethnic groups. Immigration is high because it is one of the richest countries in the area bordering northern Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, and as a result of socio-economic crises in some other countries such as Haiti, and it has permeable natural borders. Diabetes and obesity, are emerging issues, with double the prevalence of Mainland France, whereas infectious diseases, such as HIV, take second place. Therapeutic and educational management are challenging because they require the adaptation of tools and treatments to the mul-ticulturalism and precariousness often encountered in these populations. The French and European recommendations are unsuited to the needs of the territory and must take into account the epidemiological, sociological and cultural parameters of these populations in order to provide appropriate and graded management of diabetes in the French Amazon.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Optimal adherence to prescribed medications in women with gestational diabetes is relevant for perinatal outcomes. OBJECTIVE To summarize available information on the prevalence and factors contributing to medication adherence in women with gestational diabetes from the biological and psychosocial perspectives. METHODS A literature search on adherence in gestational diabetes was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus, and the Directory of Open Access Journals for studies published on the topic. The Arksey and O'Malley framework for scoping reviews was used to explore and summarize the evidence. RESULTS A total of 2395 studies were retrieved of which 13 fully met the eligibility criteria. The studies were reported in Zimbabwe (n = 5), Iran (n = 1), Mexico (n = 1), South India (n = 1), the United States of America (n = 4), and one multinational study covering Australia, Europe, North and South America. The main types of antidiabetic medications used were insulin (n = 6), metformin (n = 4), and glyburide (n = 2). The prevalence of adherence ranged from 35.6% to 97%, with the assessment tool being self-report measures (n = 8). The main factors associated with nonadherence included worsening pregnancy symptoms, side effects of medications, perceived risks, mental health symptoms, poor social support, and socioeconomic status. Recommendations that evolved from the studies to improve adherence included education, counselling, improved support networks, and social interventions, while the main reported interventional study employed continuous education on the impact of adherence on perinatal outcomes. CONCLUSION Medication nonadherence in gestational diabetes seems to be influenced by multiple factors with some educational interventions positively impacting adherence behaviours. Thus, future research in women with gestational diabetes could consider interventions from a multifactorial perspective to improve therapeutic outcomes.

Abstract
Background The global pandemic of diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) is the direct cause of significant health and economic problems for both governments and individuals owing to the high level of morbidity and mortality. South Africa has the second highest incidence of DM2 in sub-Saharan Africa. Aim This article describes the experiences of diabetes nurse educators in relation to self-management of DM2 of persons living with DM2. Setting This article involves nurse educators working in diabetes clinics in public and private hospitals in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, South Africa. Methods A semi-structured interview guide was used to collect data from a focus group interview comprising three participants and two individual interviews. The interviews were recorded with the permission of participants, transcribed and then coded using Tesch’s model of data analysis. Themes were agreed upon with the consensus of the researcher, two supervisors and an independent coder. Results Three themes were identified: (1) diabetes nurse educators have clear perceptions about the importance of self-management of DM2 of persons living with DM2, (2) there are factors that affect persons living with DM2 with respect to self-management and (3) there are ways in which professional nurses can assist persons living with DM2 in the self-management of their condition. Conclusion This article identified factors that diabetes nurse educators experienced in either assisting or hindering patients in self-management of their DM2. The diabetes nurse educators voiced their views on how professional nurses can provide support to the patients living with DM2.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to investigate glucose profiles assessed by oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT), fasting glucose, and lipid profiles among smokers, ex-smokers and never-smokers. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study design used was a cross-sectional analysis of data from several years of the NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) from 2005 to 2014. A total of 12,460 participants with measures of OGTT, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were included for the data analysis. Outcomes were all assessed in an unadjusted and in an adjusted gender analysis. A GLM model was used to assess 2-hour OGTT, fasting plasma glucose, difference between fasting plasma glucose and OGTT, HbA1c, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride in relation to current smoking, ex-smoking and never smoking. The effects were adjusted with covariates: gender, BMI, age, alcohol usage, educational level and ethnicity. RESULTS The OGTT results was lower for the group smoking (-10.1 [-13.2; -7.1], p < 0.001), and no effect was observed from ex-smoking (-2.7 [-5.7; 0.8], p = 0.08). Fasting glucose was not different for smokers (-0.2 [-1.6; 1.2], p = 0.80) or ex-smokers (0.1 [-1.3; 1.5], p = 0.90). For smokers', triglycerides (1.2 [1.1; 1.3], p < 0.001), LDL-cholesterol (7.7 [6.0; 9.3], p < 0.001) were increased and HDL-cholesterol was decreased (-2.1 [-2.8; -1.5], p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Although this study is cross-sectional and cannot, by the same nature of the design, prove a cause-effect relationship, the present results indicate that cigarette smoking may be associated with factors that are adversely related to the metabolic syndrome. But the evidence from our results are not unanimous pointing in the same direction as 2-hour OGTT measurements are considerably lower in participants smoking.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To examine the association of sleep duration, insomnia, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in a cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) on glucose-lowering medications. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS 13 346 patients with T2D were included in the present analysis (mean age: 60.2 years; 56.6% were on antidiabetic drug monotherapy; 43.4% received at least two glucose-lowering medications). Sleep duration (short: ≤6 hours/day; normal: 7-8 hours/day; long: ≥9 hours/day) and frequency of insomnia symptoms were self-reported. The risk of OSA was considered high if at least two of the following conditions were fulfilled: regular snoring, frequent daytime sleepiness, and either obesity (≥30 kg/m2) or hypertension (systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mm Hg). Associations between sleep variables and HbA1c were investigated by analysis of covariance or linear regression (adjusted for, eg, participants' age, sex, ethnic background, and systolic blood pressure). RESULTS Long sleep duration and a high risk for OSA were independently associated with higher HbA1c values (long vs normal sleep duration: +0.10% (95% CI 0.03 to 0.18); high vs low risk for OSA: +0.07% (95% CI 0.02 to 0.11), both p=0.004). No robust association was found of short sleep duration and frequent insomnia symptoms with HbA1c. Finally, a positive dose-response association between the number of sleep problems per subject (range: 0-3) and HbA1c was observed (β=0.04% (0.02 to 0.06), p=0.002). However, all significant associations were small. CONCLUSION Screening for and treatment of sleep problems may help lower HbA1c levels in patients with T2D on glucose-lowering medications.

Abstract
AIM To describe the association between socio-economic status and prevalence of key cardiovascular risk factors in people with type 2 diabetes in Scotland. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 264 011 people with type 2 diabetes in Scotland in 2016 identified from the population-based diabetes register. Socio-economic status was defined using quintiles of the area-based Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) with quintile (Q)1 and Q5 used to identify the most- and least-deprived fifths of the population, respectively. Logistic regression models adjusted for age, sex, health board, history of cardiovascular disease and duration of diabetes were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) for Q1 compared with Q5 for each risk factor. RESULTS The mean (sd) age of the study population was 66.7 (12.8) years, 56% were men, 24% were in Q1 and 15% were in Q5. Crude prevalence in Q1/Q5 was 24%/8.8% for smoking, 62%/49% for BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 , 44%/40% for HbA1c ≥ 58 mmol/mol (7.5%), 31%/31% for systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg, and 24%/25% for total cholesterol ≥ 5 mmol/l, respectively. ORs [95% confidence intervals (CI)] were 3.08 (2.95-3.21) for current smoking, 1.48 (1.44-1.52) for BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 , 1.11 (1.08-1.15) for HbA1c ≥ 58 mmol/mol (7.5%), 1.03 (1.00-1.06) for SBP ≥ 140 mmHg and 0.87 (0.84-0.90) for total cholesterol ≥ 5 mmol/l. CONCLUSIONS Socio-economic deprivation is associated with higher prevalence of smoking, BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 and HbA1c ≥ 58 mmol/mol (7.5%), and lower prevalence of total cholesterol ≥ 5 mmol/l among people with type 2 diabetes in Scotland. Effective approaches to reducing inequalities are required as well as reducing risk factor prevalence across the whole population.

Abstract
Significance: Human skin wounds carry an immense epidemiologic and financial burden, and their impact will continue to grow with an aging population and rising incidence of comorbid conditions known to affect wound healing. To comprehensively address this growing clinical issue, physicians should also be aware of how conditions of the human social environment may affect wound healing. Here we provide a review of the emerging field of social genomics and its potential impact on the wound healing. Recent Advances: Multiple studies using human and animal models have correlated social influences and their contributing effects to acute and chronic stress with delays in wound healing. Furthermore, observations between nongenetic factors such as nutrition, socioeconomic, and educational status have also shown to have a direct or indirect impact on clinical outcomes of wound healing. Critical Issues: Nutrition, financial burden, socioeconomic and education status, and acute and chronic stress are variables that have either direct (epigenetic) or indirect impact on wound healing and patients' quality of life. Wound care is costly and remains a challenge placing economic burden on patients. Furthermore, poor clinical outcomes and complications including loss of mobility and disability may lead to job loss, further contributing to socioeconomic related stress. Thus, the economic burden and inadequate wound healing are intertwined, making each other worse. Future Directions: Although some evidence regarding the specific changes in genetic pathways imparted by conditions of the social environment exists, further studies are warranted to identify potential mechanisms, interventions, and prevention approaches.

Abstract
Many countries, including Brazil, are facing growing social inequalities in diabetes prevalence. The different states in Brazil represent different levels of development and by comparing diabetes inequalities across states we aim to get a better understanding of how educational inequalities in diabetes are linked to social development. We use the latest cross-sectional national health survey of Brazil - PNS-2013 (N = 60,202) and analyse the disparities in diabetes as well as the differential exposure and susceptibility to the effect of obesity across states for men and women. Among women in high-HDI states the prevalence of diabetes is 11.7 percentage units (CI: 9.3; 14.0) higher among the lowest compared to the highest educated. In less-developed states the disparity is smaller. Among men, there is no social gradient found for diabetes, but obesity is positively associated with education. The association between obesity and diabetes is stronger among the low educated particularly for men in high-HDI states. Here the interaction effect between low education and obesity is 11.7 (CI 8.1; 15.4) percentage units. The fact that economic development is associated with increasingly unequal levels of diabetes and with unequal levels of exposure and susceptibility to obesity indicates that other interacting determinants are important for the development of the diabetes epidemic in Brazil.

Abstract
Although low socioeconomic status (SES) is related to poor glycemic control, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We examined potentially modifiable factors involved in the association between low SES and poor glycemic control using data from the baseline survey of a multicenter, prospective cohort study. Five hundred adult type 2 diabetes patients were recruited from three diabetes centers. Glycemic control was poorer in diabetic individuals with low SES than in those with higher SES. Adverse health-related behaviors, such as non-adherence to medication (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04–1.13) and diet (AOR = 1.04, 95% CI 1.02–1.06); existing comorbidities, such as depressive symptoms (AOR = 1.05, 95% CI 1.04–1.09); and non-adherence to essential health service-related practices concerning diabetes care, such as irregular scheduled clinic visits (AOR = 1.04, 95% CI 1.03–1.06) and not practicing self-monitoring of blood glucose (AOR = 1.05, 95% CI 1.03–1.07), mediated the relationship between social adversity and poor glycemic control specially in urban areas of Bangladesh. Those identified factors provide useful information for developing interventions to mitigate socioeconomic disparities in glycemic control.

Abstract
Aim: To examine the relationship between multiple measures of financial hardship and glycemic control in older adults with diabetes. Methods: Using data from Health and Retirement Study (HRS), we investigated four measures of financial hardship: difficulty paying bills, ongoing financial strain, decreasing food intake due to money, and taking less medication due to cost. Using linear regression models, we investigated the relationship between each measure, and a cumulative score of hardships per person, on glycemic control (HbA1c). Results: After adjustment, a significant relationship existed with each increasing number of hardships associated with increasing HbA1c (0.09, [95%CI 0.04, 0.14]). Difficulty paying bills (0.25, [95%CI 0.14, 0.35]) and decreased medication usage due to cost (0.17, [95%CI 0.03, 0.31]) remained significantly associated with HbA1c. Conclusion: In older adults, difficulty paying bills and cost-related medication nonadherence is associated with glycemic control, and every additional financial hardship was associated with an increased HbA1c by nearly 0.1%.

Abstract
South Africa is confronted with a high burden of diabetes, the majority of which are poorly controlled. The use of mHealth, specifically text messaging for fostering health, is evolving and studies on its efficacy, the majority of which were conducted in developed countries, have documented mixed findings. There is no such study done amongst patients living with diabetes in the resource-poor settings of South Africa. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy, acceptability and feasibility of text-messaging in improving glycaemic control and other clinical outcomes among individuals living with diabetes in low-resource settings in Eastern Cape, South Africa. The study adopted a multi-centre, two-arm, parallel, randomised-controlled trial design. The study was conducted amongst patients with an uncontrolled glycaemic status. Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 108) and the control arm (n = 108). Participants in the intervention arm received daily educational text messages on diabetes for six months. Data was collected at baseline and six months post-intervention. Blood glucose, blood pressure and anthropometric measurements followed standard procedure. Mixed-model analysis was used to assess the impact of the text messages on blood glucose while linear regression was used to assess its effect on other clinical outcomes such as weight, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The mean age of the participants was 60.64 (SD± 11.58) years. The majority of the participants had a secondary level of education (95.3%) and earned 104.80 to 991.42 USD per month (67.7%). Both arms of the study showed improvement in their blood glucose levels, but the intervention did not have any significant effect, the mean adjusted change in blood glucose was 0.26 (-0.81 to 1.32), p = 0.634. Also, the intervention did not have any significant effect on weight, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Almost all participants (90.74%) were pleased with the intervention and felt it was helpful. Of those who participated in the intervention, 91% completed the follow-up after 6 months. Unidirectional text-messaging was acceptable and feasible amongst adults living with diabetes in this setting. However, its efficacy in improving glycaemic status and other clinical outcomes remains doubtful. Trial Registration: Pan African Clinical Trial Registry PACTR201810599931422.

Abstract
Diabetes and periodontitis may increase risk of cardiovascular disease. Whether albuminuria, C-reactive protein (CRP), and socioeconomic factors, known as cardiovascular risks in subjects with poorly controlled diabetes, are independently associated with periodontal status in well-controlled diabetes remains to be elucidated. In 503 subjects with type 2 diabetes, the cross-sectional associations of clinical and socioeconomic factors with periodontal parameters were investigated. Periodontal parameters on all teeth included the probing pocket depth at 6 sites per tooth, bleeding on probing, the plaque score, tooth mobility, and the number of teeth. The subjects had a mean HbA1c value of 6.85% and a median CRP value of 0.06 mg/dL, and 27.9% of the subjects had albuminuria. Albuminuria and CRP values had significant associations with several periodontal parameters, whereas other variables including HbA1c did not. Subjects with albuminuria had significantly higher HbA1c, CRP, and % sites of pocket depth ≥ 4 mm than subjects with normoalbuminuria; additionally, those with high CRP (≥ median) had significantly higher body mass index, HbA1c, % sites of pocket depth ≥ 4 mm, and plaque score than those with low CRP. In multiple linear regression analysis, albuminuria, CRP, education, smoking, and dental attendance exhibited significant associations with periodontal parameters, independent of the effect of age, sex, body mass index, and diabetes therapy. Albuminuria, CRP, education, smoking, and dental attendance were independently associated with periodontal parameters even in subjects with a mean of HbA1c of 6.85%, implying the importance of these factors for the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
The increasing prevalence and poorer management of Type 2 diabetes among West African immigrants in the UK is a public health concern. This research explored the experiences of West African immigrants in the management of Type 2 diabetes in the UK using a constructivist grounded theory approach. In-depth individual interviews were conducted with thirty-four West African immigrants living with Type 2 diabetes in the London area. Fifteen male and nineteen female adult West African immigrants with age range from 33-82 years participated in the study. Participants were recruited from five diabetes support groups and community settings. Initial, focused and theoretical coding, constant comparison and memos were used to analyse collected data. Three concepts emerged: Changing dietary habits composed of participants' experiences in meeting dietary recommendations, improving physical activity concerned with the experience of reduced physical activity since moving to the UK and striving to adapt which focus on the impact of migration changes in living with Type 2 diabetes in the UK. These address challenges that West African immigrants experience in the management of Type 2 diabetes in the UK. The findings of this research provide a better understanding of the influencing factors and can be used to improve the support provided for West Africans living with Type 2 diabetes in the UK, presenting a deeper understanding of socio-cultural factors that contribute to supporting individuals from this population.

Abstract
Purpose Diabetes can pose a significant disease burden for patients and is often challenging to manage in underserved patient populations with limited access to care. A pilot study was conducted to determine the impact of a pharmacist-run insulin titration service, provided via telephone, to patients of a local ambulatory care clinic with a large medically, underserved patient population. The pilot service was implemented in Spring 2018 at Cooper Green Mercy Health Services (CGMHS) and was provided by an affiliate clinical pharmacist who is also on faculty at Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy. Patients who received care within the CGMHS diabetes clinic were eligible for referral to the service. The service was provided via a collaborative practice agreement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare clinical outcomes of patients who received the telepharmacy service versus the standard of care. Standard of care was defined as patients whose insulin therapy was managed solely by the primary care provider or by a diabetes clinic provider, without clinical pharmacist involvement in the patient's care. Methods This manuscript presents the results of a retrospective chart review conducted at CGMHS of patients, ages 19 or older, with a documented diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes who received care during the timeframe of February 2018 through September 2018 – the initial months of the pilot telepharmacy service. Results Sixty-seven patients met criteria for inclusion in the analysis - 16 managed in the telepharmacy service, 28 in diabetes clinic, and 23 in primary care. Patients in the telepharmacy group achieved a mean A1c change of -1.14% compared with -0.88% in the diabetes clinic group and +0.21% in the primary care group (p=0.061). In the telepharmacy group, 43.75% of patients experienced at least a 1% reduction in A1c from baseline compared with 35.71% in the diabetes clinic group and 26.09% in primary care (p=0.51). Conclusion Integration of the clinical pharmacy services for insulin titration positively affected patients' degree of glucose control. Although no statistically significant reductions in A1c were observed in this study, it should be noted that pharmacist intervention was associated with a modestly higher percent A1c reduction from baseline vs. the standard of care. The pharmacist-run service produced changes in clinical outcomes that numerically exceeded those experienced by patients receiving specialty care, in the diabetes clinic, and within primary care. As a result of this study, the pilot program has remained in effect and is in the initial stages of expansion of the consult service to eligible primary care patients.

Abstract
The performance of general practitioners (GPs) is frequently assessed without considering the factors causing variability among general medical practices (GMPs). Our cross-sectional national-based study was performed in Hungary to evaluate the influence of GMP characteristics on performance indicators. The relationship between patient’s characteristics (age, gender, education) and GMP-specific parameters (practice size, vacancy of GP’s position, settlement type, and county of GMP) and the quality of care was assessed by multilevel logistic regression models. The variations attributable to physicians were small (from 0.77% to 17.95%). The education of patients was associated with 10 performance indicators. Practicing in an urban settlement mostly increased the quality of care for hypertension and diabetes care related performance indicators, while the county was identified as one of the major determinants of variability among GPs’ performance. Only a few indicators were affected by the vacancy and practice size. Thus, the observed variability in performance between GPs partially arose from demographic characteristics and education of patients, settlement type, and regional location of GMPs. Considering the real effect of these factors in evaluation would reflect better the personal performance of GPs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine whether low socioeconomic status (SES), with or without universal drug coverage, predicts end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and survival after dialysis in patients with diabetes. METHODS We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study in Ontario, Canada. We used ≥65 years of age as a surrogate for universal drug coverage. Adults with diabetes were followed from March 31, 1997 to March 31, 2011 for occurrence of the composite primary outcome (acute kidney injury, ESRD requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation). Patients on dialysis with diabetes were followed from April 1, 1994 to March 31, 2011 for occurrence of death or transplantation. RESULTS SES quintile (Q) was inversely associated with the primary outcome in both age groups; however, the gradient was higher in those <65 years of age (Q1:Q5 hazard ratio [HR], 1.43; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.37-1.49) compared with ≥65 years of age (HR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.15-1.24). Low SES was associated with a lower likelihood of kidney transplantation among those <65 years of age (HR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.65-0.92). In patients on dialysis, low SES was associated with higher mortality (HR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.02-1.16) in both age groups. This association was eliminated after accounting for the decreased rates of kidney transplantation in lower SES groups. CONCLUSIONS SES is inversely associated with ESRD outcomes in individuals with diabetes, and this disparity is reduced in those ≥65 years of age who universally receive prescription drug coverage. Low SES is associated with a higher mortality after dialysis, largely explained by lower kidney transplantation rates in poorer populations.

Abstract
The generalizability of differences in dietary restrictions (DRs) as function of socioeconomic status (SES) and the pathways of the associations between SES and DRs remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to explore SES differences in DRs and psychosocial mediators between SES and DRs in Japanese patients receiving hemodialysis. This study was a cross-sectional survey of 6,644 outpatients (average age = 66.5 years; 65% males) of hemodialysis facilities across Japan. DRs were assessed by self-reported and objective measures, and SES was assessed based on education and income. Three psychosocial mediators were used: self-efficacy, control expectancy, and social support. Indirect influences of SES through the mediators were evaluated with a multiple mediator model. Although higher education was significantly associated with higher self-reported DRs, higher income was significantly associated with lower self-reported DRs. Significant SES differences in objective DRs were not observed. The relationships between education and self-reported DRs and objective DRs were significantly mediated by self-efficacy and/or control expectancy. The influences of income were mediated by social support. It becomes possible to design interventions targeting modifiable psychosocial factors including self-efficacy, control expectancy, and social support in order to reduce SES inequalities in DRs.
