Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors tend to cluster and interact multiplicatively and have been incorporated into risk equations such as the Framingham risk score, which can reasonably predict CVD over short- and long-term periods. Beyond risk factor levels at a single time point, recent evidence demonstrated that risk trajectories are differentially related to CVD risk. However, factors associated with suboptimal control or unstable CVD risk trajectories are not yet established. OBJECTIVE This study aims to examine factors associated with CVD risk trajectories in a semirural, multiethnic community-dwelling population. METHODS Data on demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, mental health, and cardiovascular factors were measured at baseline (2013) and during follow-up (2018) of the South East Asia Community Observatory cohort. The 10-year CVD risk change transition was computed. The trajectory patterns identified were improved; remained unchanged in low, moderate, or high CVD risk clusters; and worsened CVD risk trajectories. Multivariable regression analyses were used to examine the association between risk factors and changes in Framingham risk score and predicted CVD risk trajectory patterns with adjustments for concurrent risk factors. RESULTS Of the 6599 multiethnic community-dwelling individuals (n=3954, 59.92% female participants and n=2645, 40.08% male participants; mean age 55.3, SD 10.6 years), CVD risk increased over time in 33.37% (n=2202) of the sample population, while 24.38% (n=1609 remained in the high-risk trajectory pattern, which was reflected by the increased prevalence of all major CVD risk factors over the 5-year follow-up. Meanwhile, sex-specific prevalence data indicate that 21.44% (n=567) of male and 41.35% (n=1635) of female participants experienced an increase in CVD risk. However, a stark sex difference was observed in those remaining in the high CVD risk cluster, with 45.1% (n=1193) male participants and 10.52% (n=416) female participants. Regarding specific CVD risk factors, male participants exhibited a higher percentage increase in the prevalence of hypertension, antihypertensive medication use, smoking, and obesity, while female participants showed a higher prevalence of diabetes. Further regression analyses identified that Malay compared to Chinese (P<.001) and Indian (P=.04) ethnicity, nonmarried status (P<.001), full-time employment (P<.001), and depressive symptoms (P=.04) were all significantly associated with increased CVD risk scores. In addition, lower educational levels and frequently having meals from outside were significantly associated to higher odds of both worsening and remaining in high CVD risk trajectories. CONCLUSIONS Sociodemographics and mental health were found to be differently associated with CVD risk trajectories, warranting future research to disentangle the role of psychosocial disparities in CVD. Our findings carry public health implications, suggesting that the rise in major risk factors along with psychosocial disparities could potentially elevate CVD risk among individuals in underserved settings. More prevention efforts that continuously monitor CVD risk and consider changes in risk factors among vulnerable populations should be emphasized.

Abstract
Key Points Depression and health-related quality of life improve with kidney transplantation and is sustained beyond the immediate post-transplant period. The improvement in health-related quality of life, especially the physical component, differs by age and is higher in younger patients. Depression improves in all kidney transplantation recipients, irrespective of their age. Background Depression and diminished health-related quality of life (HRQOL) are common in kidney failure. In this study, we investigate whether kidney transplantation (KT), the treatment of choice for kidney failure, improves depression and HRQOL across lifespan and whether this effect is sustained. Methods In this longitudinal observational cohort study, we assessed depression and HRQOL in patients on the KT waitlist and again at 3 months and 1 year after KT. We measured depression using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and HRQOL using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form Version 1.3 physical health composite score (PCS) and mental health composite score (MCS). We used linear mixed-effects models with random intercepts for patients to evaluate the effect of time, age, and KT status on BDI-II score, PCS, and MCS. For models with significant age interactions, we estimated this effect for baseline age groups. Results We analyzed 239 longitudinal BDI-II assessments completed by 99 patients and 143 Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form Version 1.3 assessments completed by 59 patients (16% Black, 79% White). The BDI-II scores improved pre- to post-KT (10 pre-KT versus five post-KT, P < 0.001). PCS improved pre- to post-KT in younger patients, but the magnitude of change was lower with older age (P for interaction=0.01). In the subgroup analysis by age, there was improvement in PCS post-KT in patients younger than 60 years (P = 0.003 for 30–39, P = 0.007 for 40–49, P = 0.03 for 50–59). The MCS also improved from 47 pre-KT to 51 post-KT (P < 0.001), and the magnitude of improvement was again lower with older age (P for interaction=0.03). Conclusions Depression and HRQOL improve with KT. While depression improves in all ages, the improvement in HRQOL, especially PCS, is more evident in younger patients. This improvement in depression and HRQOL is sustained until at least 1 year post-KT. These data help frame expectations for patients and transplant teams. Abstract
Several individual-based social deprivation and vulnerability indices have been developed to measure the negative impact of low socioeconomic status on health outcomes. However, their variables and measurable characteristics have not been unequivocally assessed. A comprehensive database literature scoping review was performed to identify all individual-based social deprivation and vulnerability indices. Area-based indices and those developed for pediatric populations were excluded. Data were extracted from all eligible studies and their methodology was assessed with quality criteria. A total of 14 indices were identified, of which 64% (9/14) measured social deprivation and 36% (5/14) measured socioeconomic vulnerability. Sum of weights was the most common scoring system, present in 43% (6/14) of all indices, with no exclusive domains to either vulnerability or deprivation indices. A total of 83 different variables were identified; a very frequent variable (29%; 5/14) related to an individual's social relationships was "seen any family or friends or neighbors." Only five deprivation indices reported a specific internal consistency measure, while no indices reported data on reproducibility. This is the first scoping review of individual-based deprivation and vulnerability indices, which may be used interchangeably when measuring the impact of SES on health outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Marital quality (MQ) is a psychosocial factor that has been neglected in cardiovascular prevention guidelines, although its association with cardiovascular diseases has been identified in several studies. Therefore, we aim to investigate how MQ either in positive or negative dimensions affect different cardiovascular risk factors and diseases. RECENT FINDINGS We systematically searched different databases in September 2023 for longitudinal studies conducted to assess the contribution of MQ to well-established cardiovascular risk factors and diseases. Two independent researchers screened studies and carried out data extraction and quality assessment of included ones. From 12,175 potential studies screened, 40 were included. The presence of significant heterogeneity in methodology, follow-up, and subsequent effect estimates made it unfeasible to do a meta-analysis. Despite the variation, most studies found a significant association of negative MQ measures with physical inactivity (2/2), high levels of smoking (4/5) and alcohol (3/3) use, increased metabolic syndrome risk (3/3), elevated type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) risk and poor T2DM management (3/6), elevated cardiovascular disease risk and progression (9/11), increased body weight and obesity risk (2/3), elevated blood pressure and hypertension risk (7/8). Positive MQ measures were mainly associated with improvement in blood pressure control (2/2), reduced T2DM risk and its good management (1/1), reduced body weight and obesity risk (2/2), and increased survival in cardiovascular diseases (4/4). Based on current evidence, MQ seems to play a crucial role in developing established cardiovascular risk factors and diseases and is worth considering in preventive strategies.

Abstract
Background The American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8) Presidential Advisory deemed psychological health foundational for cardiovascular health (CVH) but did not include it as a CVH metric. Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate associations of a CVH construct enhanced with a ninth metric for psychological health based on readily administered depression screening with mortality risk in U.S. adults. Methods Participants were 21,183 adults (mean age: 48y, 51% female, 11% Black, 15% Hispanic, 65% White) from the 2011 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The LE8 algorithm was used to assess CVH. Two enhanced CVH constructs that include a ninth psychological health metric based on depression screening using the Patient Health Questionnaires (PHQ-2 and PHQ-9) were computed. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models compared all-cause and cause-specific mortality risk across CVH score tertiles and a priori defined categories (high: 80-100, moderate: 50-79, low: 0-49) in the overall sample and by sex and race and ethnicity. Results There were 1,397 deaths (414 cardiovascular and 329 cancer deaths). High vs low CVH scores, enhanced with PHQ-2 and PHQ-9, were associated with 69% and 70% lower mortality risk, while a high vs low LE8 score was associated with 65% lower risk (p-trend<0.001). Higher LE8 and enhanced CVH scores predicted lower mortality risk in both sexes and in Black and White but not Hispanic adults and were also associated with lower cardiovascular and cancer mortality. Both enhanced CVH scores had excellent performance for predicting mortality, similar to the LE8 score (C-statistic = 0.843 vs 0.842, P < 0.001). Conclusions A CVH construct enhanced with psychological health strongly predicts mortality. Inclusion of psychological health as a ninth CVH metric, with depression screening as a feasible proxy in clinical and public health settings, should be considered.

Abstract
AIMS Few studies investigate whether psychosocial factors (social isolation, social support, trait anger, and depressive symptoms) are associated with cardiovascular health, and none with the American Heart Association's new definition of cardiovascular health, Life's Essential 8 (LE8). Therefore, we assessed the cross-sectional associations of psychosocial factors with Life's Essential 8 and individual components of Life's Essential 8. METHODS We included 11,311 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities cohort participants (58% females; 23% Black; mean age 57 (standard deviation: 6) years) who attended Visit 2 (1990-1992) in this secondary data analysis using cross-sectional data from the ARIC cohort study. Life's Essential 8 components included diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, sleep quality, body mass index, blood lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure. Life's Essential 8 was scored per the American Heart Association definition (0-100 range); higher scores indicate better cardiovascular health. Associations of categories (high, moderate, and low) of each psychosocial factor with continuous Life's Essential 8 score and individual Life's Essential 8 components were assessed using multivariable linear regressions. RESULTS 11% of participants had high Life's Essential 8 scores (80-100), while 67% and 22% had moderate (50-79) and low Life's Essential 8 scores (0-49) respectively. Poor scores on psychosocial factor assessments were associated with lower Life's Essential 8 scores, with the largest magnitude of association for categories of depressive symptoms (low β = Ref.; moderate β = -3.1, (95% confidence interval: -3.7, -2.5; high β = -8.2 (95% confidence interval: -8.8, -7.5)). Most psychosocial factors were associated with Life's Essential 8 scores for diet, physical activity, nicotine, and sleep, but psychosocial factors were not associated with body mass index, blood lipids, blood glucose, or blood pressure. CONCLUSION Less favorable measures of psychosocial health were associated with lower Life's Essential 8 scores compared better measures of psychosocial health among middle-aged males and females.

Abstract
Psychosocial evaluations are rarely conducted with community-dwelling individuals, especially those with higher risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aims to evaluate the perceptual stress and cardiovascular risk among women in a large cross-sectional study performed in Brazilian communities. Subjects aged over 18 years were included out of 500 public basic health units (BHU) in Brazil. All subjects were subjected to a clinical consultation and questionnaires application. Data were used to identify healthy lifestyle, smoking status, and self-perception of psychological stress. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) risk score (NRS) was used to estimate cardiovascular risk. Ethnicity information was self-reported, considering white versus non-white (black, brown, and mixed-race) women. A total of 93,605 patients were recruited from a primary care setting, of which 62,200 (66.4%) were women. Intense and severe auto-perception of stress was higher within non-white women at home (p < 0.001), at work (p = 0.008), socially (p < 0.001), and financially (p < 0.001) compared to white women. Therefore, the NRS indicates that non-white women had higher cardiovascular risk, lower physical activity, and lower daily vegetables/fruits consumption compared to white women (p < 0.001). Non-white women in Brazilian communities are susceptible to increased stress and cardiovascular disease risk, which adds up to disparities in access to the public health system.

Abstract
Psychological processes have a crucial role in the recovery from acute myocardial infarction (AMI), yet the underlying mechanisms of these effects remain elusive. Here we demonstrate the impact of the reward system, a brain network associated with motivation and positive expectations, on the clinical outcomes of AMI in mice. Chemogenetic activation of dopaminergic neurons in the reward system improved the remodeling processes and vascularization after AMI, leading to enhanced cardiac performance compared to controls. These effects were mediated through several physiological mechanisms, including alterations in immune activity and reduced adrenergic input to the liver. We further demonstrate an anatomical connection between the reward system and the liver, functionally manifested by altered transcription of complement component 3, which in turn affects vascularization and recovery from AMI. These findings establish a causal connection between a motivational brain network and recovery from AMI, introducing potential therapeutic avenues for intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Police officers face an increased risk of developing cerebro-cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, current literature lacks population-based cohort studies specifically focusing on this association. This study aimed to investigate the association between police officers and the risk of developing CVD compared with education officers, while accounting for socioeconomic and demographic factors. METHODS We used the Korean National Health Insurance Service data spanning from 2009 to 2020. In this population-based retrospective matched cohort study, we identified age, sex, and calendar years of job-enrollment-matched education officers for each police officer. This study evaluated the CVD occurrence, including acute myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke. Using multivariable Cox regression analysis, we determined the risk of developing CVD, expressed as a hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Among 104,134 police officers and 104,134 education officers, 4,391(42.2%) cases and 3,631(34.9%) cases of CVD occurred, respectively. The mean ± standard deviation age was 38.4 ± 9.4 years in police officers and 38.6 ± 9.5 years in education officers. The proportion of men was 84.8 % in both groups. Police officers were significantly associated with a higher risk of developing CVD compared with education officers, with an adjusted HR of 1.15 (95% CI, 1.09-1.22). In addition, police officers had significantly higher risks for acute myocardial infarction (adjusted HR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.06-1.26) and ischemic stroke (adjusted HR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.09-1.25). CONCLUSIONS The findings of our study highlight a significant increase in the risk of developing CVD among police officers, particularly among those aged 45 years and older and those with uncontrolled blood pressure compared to their education officer counterparts. Future cohort studies are required to confirm this association.

Abstract
Ikigai-a Japanese concept that includes elements such as life's purpose and meaning-has been reported to be associated with various systemic health conditions, such as the risk of developing physical dysfunction or death in older adults. However, there are no reports that comprehensively examine the psychological and social aspects of Ikigai. We attempted to clarify the characteristics of Ikigai by examining it from a biopsychosocial model using physical, psychological, and social perspectives through a cross-sectional study on sarcopenia, frailty and healthy life expectancy in a hilly and mountainous area of Japan. Koyadaira in Mima City, which is located in a hilly and mountainous region on Shikoku Island in Japan, was targeted. This cross-sectional study included 105 outpatients aged 65 and over, with an average age of 79.02 ± 6.91 years. Ikigai (self-rating score on a scale of 0 (no Ikigai) to 5 (the highest Ikigai)) participants' level of physical activity (the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly, PASE), degree of depression (the Geriatric Depression-15 Scale, GDS-15), cognitive function (the Mini-Mental State Examination, MMSE) and social isolation (the abbreviated Lubben Social Network Scale, LSNS-6) was assessed. Significant positive correlations were found between PASE and MMSE. The LSNS-6 significantly correlated with the MMSE and GDS-15. In a path model, out of four paths from PASE, GDS-15, MMSE, and LSNS-6 to Ikigai, the path from the GDS-15 alone was significant (correlation coefficient -0.271, p < 0.01). The adaptability of this model was good. This study indicates that depressive status has a large impact on Ikigai, along with physical, cognitive, and social conditions; thus, it is appropriate to consider that an affective psychological status, such as depressive symptoms, is a fundamental condition for having Ikigai.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Vasomotor symptoms (VMS), including hot flashes and night sweats, are hallmark symptoms of the menopause transition. Previous research has documented greater frequency, duration, and severity of VMS in Black women compared with women from other racial/ethnic groups, even after accounting for other factors. This analysis examined the association between discrimination and VMS and the extent to which discrimination accounts for the disproportionate burden of VMS in Black women. METHODS Using available discrimination and VMS data from the SWAN cohort study (n = 2,377, 48% White, 32% Black, 6% Japanese, 4% Chinese, and 9% Hispanic women) followed approximately yearly in midlife from premenopause (42-52 y) through postmenopause (~20 y), we assessed concurrent associations between discrimination and VMS frequency in the past 2 weeks using weighted generalized mixed models. We also assessed associations between chronic discrimination across first four visits and VMS trajectories from premenopause to postmenopause using weighted multinomial logistic regression. Models were adjusted for known risk factors for VMS. RESULTS Higher levels of discrimination were associated with concurrent reporting of any (odds ratio [OR], 1.57 [1.31-1.89]) and frequent (≥6 d) VMS (OR, 1.55 [1.21-1.99]). After adjustment, associations remained significant for any (OR, 1.30 [1.09-1.54]) but not frequent VMS. For any VMS trajectories, chronic discrimination was associated with "continuously high" (OR, 1.69 [1.03-2.77]) and "high pre-FMP-decline post-FMP" (OR, 1.70 [1.01-2.88]) versus "FMP-onset low" trajectories. After adjusting for discrimination, odds of reporting any, frequent, and of being in the "continuously high" any VMS trajectory remained elevated for Black versus White women. CONCLUSIONS Discrimination is associated with greater concurrent risk of any (but not frequent) VMS, and chronic discrimination is associated with a continuously high reporting of any VMS over time, independent of known risk factors. Adjusting for discrimination attenuates but does not eliminate the increased risk of VMS for Black women.

Abstract
Prior research documents higher levels of depressive symptoms among Black Americans relative to Whites. Yet, we know less about the role of other dimensions of stratification (e.g., skin tone) in shaping mental health inequality between Black and White adults, and whether mental health trajectories by race and skin tone among Black adults are contingent upon social contexts in childhood and adolescence. To address these gaps, this study asks: 1) to what extent do self-identified race and interviewer-rated skin tone among Black respondents shape inequalities in depressive symptoms between Black and White Americans across ages 12-42? 2) Are trajectories of depressive symptoms by race and skin tone among Black respondents contingent on school racial contexts (e.g., school racial composition)? Using five waves of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health and growth curve models, results suggest trajectories of depressive symptoms across ages 12-42 vary by race, school racial context, and skin tone among Black respondents. Specifically, Black students rated as having very dark, dark, and medium brown skin who attended high proportion Black schools in adolescence experienced lower levels of depressive symptoms than their White and light-skinned Black counterparts, particularly across the teen years and early 20s. Conversely, attending higher proportion White schools led to increases in depressive symptoms across earlier ages for Black students, particularly those who fell within the middle of the skin color continuum. Findings highlight competing advantages and disadvantages of navigating racialized spaces in childhood/adolescence for Black Americans of different skin tones.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adults hospitalized for cardiovascular events are at high risk for postdischarge mortality. Screening of psychosocial risk is prioritized by the Joint Commission. We tested whether key patient-reported psychosocial and behavioral measures could predict posthospitalization mortality in a cohort of adults hospitalized for a cardiovascular event. METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study to test the prognostic utility of validated patient-reported measures, including health literacy, social support, health behaviors and disease management, and socioeconomic status. Cox survival analyses of mortality were conducted over a median of 3.5 years. RESULTS Among 2977 adults hospitalized for either acute coronary syndrome or acute decompensated heart failure, the mean age was 53 years, and 60% were male. After adjusting for demographic, clinical, and other psychosocial factors, mortality risk was greatest among patients who reported being unemployed (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.99, 95% confidence interval [CI]): 1.30-3.06), retired (HR: 2.14, 95% CI: 1.60-2.87), or unable to work due to disability (HR: 2.36, 95% CI: 1.73-3.21), as compared to those who were employed. Patient-reported perceived health competence (PHCS-2) and exercise frequency were also associated with mortality risk after adjusting for all other variables (HR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.73-1.00 per four-point increase in PHCS-2; HR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.77-0.96 per 3-day increase in exercise frequency, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Patient-reported measures of employment status, perceived health competence, and exercise frequency independently predict mortality after a cardiac hospitalization. Incorporating these brief, valid measures into hospital-based screening may help with prognostication and targeting patients for resources during post-discharge transitions of care.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the associations between county-level political group density, partisan polarization, and individual-level mortality from all causes and from coronary heart disease (CHD) in the United States. Methods Using data from five survey waves (1998-2006) of the General Social Survey-National Death Index dataset and the County Presidential Election Return 2000 dataset, we fit weighted Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the associations between (1) political group density and (2) partisan polarization measured at the county level in 2000 (n = 313 counties) categorized into quartiles with individual-level mortality (n = 14,983 participants) from all causes and CHD, controlling for individual- and county-level factors. Maximum follow-up was from one year after the survey up until 2014. We conducted these analyses using two separate measures based on county-level vote share differences and party affiliation ideological extremes. Results In the overall sample, we found no evidence of associations between county-level political group density and individual-level mortality from all causes. There was evidence of a 13% higher risk of dying from heart disease in the highest quartile of county-level polarization (hazards ratio, HR = 1.13; 95% CI = 0.74-1.71). We observed heterogeneity of effects based on individual-level political affiliation. Among those identifying as Democrats, residing in counties with high (vs. low) levels of polarization appeared to be protective against mortality, with an associated 18% lower risk of dying from all causes (HR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.71-0.94). This association was strongest in areas with the highest concentrations of Democrats. Conclusions Among all study participants, political group density and polarization at the county level in 2000 were not linked to individual-level mortality. At the same time, we found that Democratic party affiliation may be protective against the adverse effects of high polarization, particularly in counties with high concentrations of Democrats. Future research should further explore these associations to potentially identify new structural interventions to address political determinants of population health.

Abstract
HIV type 1 (HIV-1) is the causative agent of AIDS. Since the start of the epidemic, HIV/AIDS has been responsible for ≈40 million deaths. Additionally, an estimated 39 million people are currently infected with the virus. HIV-1 primarily infects immune cells, such as CD4+ (cluster of differentiation 4+) T lymphocytes (T cells), and as a consequence, the number of CD4+ T cells progressively declines in people living with HIV. Within a span of ≈10 years, HIV-1 infection leads to the systemic failure of the immune system and progression to AIDS. Fortunately, potent antiviral therapy effectively controls HIV-1 infection and prevents AIDS-related deaths. The efficacy of the current antiviral therapy regimens has transformed the outcome of HIV/AIDS from a death sentence to a chronic disease with a prolonged lifespan of people living with HIV. However, antiviral therapy is not curative, is challenged by virus resistance, can be toxic, and, most importantly, requires lifelong adherence. Furthermore, the improved lifespan has resulted in an increased incidence of non-AIDS-related morbidities in people living with HIV including cardiovascular diseases, renal disease, liver disease, bone disease, cancer, and neurological conditions. In this review, we summarize the current state of knowledge of the cardiovascular comorbidities associated with HIV-1 infection, with a particular focus on hypertension. We also discuss the potential mechanisms known to drive HIV-1-associated hypertension and the knowledge gaps in our understanding of this comorbid condition. Finally, we suggest several directions of future research to better understand the factors, pathways, and mechanisms underlying HIV-1-associated hypertension in the post-antiviral therapy era.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Social networks can affect health beliefs, behaviours and outcomes through various mechanisms, including social support, social influence and information diffusion. Social network analysis (SNA), an approach which emerged from the relational perspective in social theory, has been increasingly used in health research. This paper outlines the protocol for a scoping review of literature that uses social network analytical tools to examine the effects of social connections on individual non-communicable disease and health outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This scoping review will be guided by Arksey and O'Malley's framework for conducting scoping reviews. A search of the electronic databases, Ovid Medline, PsycINFO, EMBASE and CINAHL, will be conducted in April 2024 using terms related to SNA. Two reviewers will independently assess the titles and abstracts, then the full text, of identified studies to determine whether they meet inclusion criteria. Studies that use SNA as a tool to examine the effects of social networks on individual physical health, mental health, well-being, health behaviours, healthcare utilisation, or health-related engagement, knowledge, or trust will be included. Studies examining communicable disease prevention, transmission or outcomes will be excluded. Two reviewers will extract data from the included studies. Data will be presented in tables and figures, along with a narrative synthesis. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This scoping review will synthesise data from articles published in peer-reviewed journals. The results of this review will map the ways in which SNA has been used in non-communicable disease health research. It will identify areas of health research where SNA has been heavily used and where future systematic reviews may be needed, as well as areas of opportunity where SNA remains a lesser-used method in exploring the relationship between social connections and health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Amputation confers disabilities upon patients and is linked to substantial morbidity and death attributed to heart disease. While some studies have focused on traumatic amputees in veterans, few studies have focused on traumatic amputees within the general population. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the risk of heart disease in patients with traumatic amputation with disability within the general population using a large-scale nationwide population-based cohort. METHODS AND RESULTS We used data from the Korean National Health Insurance System. A total of 22 950 participants with amputation were selected with 1:3 age, sex-matched controls between 2010 and 2018. We used Cox proportional hazard models to calculate the risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation among amputees. Participants with amputation had a higher risk of myocardial infarction (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.30 [95% CI, 1.14-1.47]), heart failure (aHR, 1.27 [95% CI, 1.17-1.38]), and atrial fibrillation (aHR, 1.17 [95% CI, 1.03-1.33]). The risks of myocardial infarction and heart failure were further increased by the presence of disability (aHR, 1.43 [95% CI, 1.04-1.95]; and aHR, 1.38 [95% CI, 1.13-1.67], respectively). CONCLUSIONS We demonstrate an increased risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation among individuals with amputation, and the risk further increased in those with disabilities. Clinicians should pay attention to the increased risk for heart disease in patients with amputation.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that living in areas of high surrounding greenness or even brief exposures to areas of high greenery is conducive to cardiovascular health, which may be related to the environmental, social, psychological, and physiological benefits of greenspaces. Recent data from multiple cross-sectional, longitudinal, and cohort studies suggest that living in areas of high surrounding greenness is associated with a lower risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. High levels of neighborhood greenery have been linked also to a decrease in the burden of cardiovascular disease risk factors as reflected by lower rates of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes. Those who live in greener environments report better mental health and more frequent social interactions, which can benefit cardiovascular health as well. In this narrative review, we discuss evidence linking greenspaces to cardiovascular health as well as the potential mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of greenspaces, including the impact of vegetation on air, noise and light pollution, ambient temperature, physical activity, mental health, and biodiversity. We review literature on the beneficial effects of acute and chronic exposure to nature on cardiovascular disease risk factors, inflammation and immune function, and we highlight the potential cardiovascular effects of biogenic volatile organic compounds that are emitted by trees and shrubs. We identify current knowledge gaps in this area and underscore the need for additional population studies to understand more clearly and precisely the link between greenness and health. Such understanding is urgently needed to fully redeem the promise of greenspaces in preventing adverse environmental exposures, mitigating the effects of climate change, and creating healthier living environments.

Abstract
Resilience research has long sought to understand how factors at the child, family, school, community, and societal levels shape adaptation in the face of adversities such as poverty and war. In this article we reflect on three themes that may prove to be useful for future resilience research. First is the idea that mental and physical health can sometimes diverge, even in response to the same social process. A better understanding of explanations for this divergence will have both theoretical and public health implications when it comes to efforts to promote resilience. Second is that more recent models of stress suggest that stress can accelerate aging. Thus, we suggest that research on resilience may need to also consider how resilience strategies may need to be developed in an accelerated fashion to be effective. Third, we suggest that if psychological resilience interventions can be conducted in conjunction with efforts to enact system-level changes targeted at adversities, this may synergize the impact that any single intervention can have, creating a more coordinated and effective set of approaches for promoting resilience in young people who confront adversity in life.

Abstract
PURPOSE Black women often experience poorer breast cancer-related outcomes and higher mortality than white women. A contributor to this disparity may relate to the disproportionate burden of cancer treatment-related cardiovascular (CV) toxicities. The objective of this review is to identify studies that report racial differences in CV toxicity risk. METHODS Medline and Embase were searched for studies that assessed CV toxicities as the outcome(s) and included Black and White women with breast cancer. Studies were selected based on inclusion/exclusion criteria and through the use of multiple reviewers. RESULTS The review included 13 studies following a review of 409 citations and 49 full-text articles. All studies were retrospective and 8/13 utilized data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare linked database. Trastuzumab was the most frequently studied treatment. The proportion of Black women in these studies ranged from 5.5 to 63%. A majority of studies reported a higher risk of CV toxicity amongst Black women when compared to white women (93%). Black women had up to a two times higher risk of CV toxicity (HR, 2.73 (CI, 1.24 to 6.01)) compared to white women. Only one study evaluated the role of socioeconomic factors in explaining racial differences in CV toxicity; however, the disparity remained even after adjusting for these factors. CONCLUSIONS There is a critical need for more longitudinal studies that evaluate multilevel factors (e.g., psychosocial, biological) that may help to explain this disparity. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Black cancer survivors may require additional surveillance and mitigation strategies to decrease disproportionate burden of CV toxicities.

Abstract
We examined relationships between resilience resources (optimism, social support, and neighborhood social cohesion) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and assessed potential effect-measure modification by psychosocial risk factors (e.g., stress, depression) among adults without CVD in 3 cohort studies (2000-2018): the Jackson Heart Study, the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, and the Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) Study. We fitted adjusted Cox models accounting for within-neighborhood clustering while censoring at dropout or non-CVD death. We assessed for effect-measure modification by psychosocial risks. In secondary analyses, we estimated standardized risk ratios using inverse-probability-weighted Aalen-Johansen estimators to account for confounding, dropout, and competing risks (non-CVD deaths) and obtained 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using cluster bootstrapping. For high and medium (versus low) optimism (n = 6,243), adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for incident CVD were 0.94 (95% CI: 0.78, 1.13) and 0.90 (95% CI: 0.75, 1.07), respectively. Corresponding HRs were 0.88 (95% CI: 0.74, 1.04) and 0.92 (95% CI: 0.79, 1.06) for social support (n = 7,729) and 1.10 (95% CI: 0.94, 1.29) and 0.99 (95% CI: 0.85, 1.16) for social cohesion (n = 7,557), respectively. Some psychosocial risks modified CVD HRs. Secondary analyses yielded similar findings. For optimism and social support, an inverse relationship was frequently most compatible with the data, but a positive relationship was also compatible. For neighborhood social cohesion, positive and null relationships were most compatible. Thus, specific resilience resources may be potential intervention targets, especially among certain subgroups.

Abstract
Three systemic biological systems, i.e., the nervous, the immune, and the cardiovascular systems, form a mutually responsive and forward-acting tissue network to regulate acute and chronic cardiovascular function in health and disease. Two sub-circuits within the cardiovascular system have been described, the artery brain circuit (ABC) and the heart brain circuit (HBC), forming a large cardiovascular brain circuit (CBC). Likewise, the nervous system consists of the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system with their functional distinct sensory and effector arms. Moreover, the immune system with its constituents, i.e., the innate and the adaptive immune systems, interact with the CBC and the nervous system at multiple levels. As understanding the structure and inner workings of the CBC gains momentum, it becomes evident that further research into the CBC may lead to unprecedented classes of therapies to treat cardiovascular diseases as multiple new biologically active molecules are being discovered that likely affect cardiovascular disease progression. Here, we weigh the merits of integrating these recent observations in cardiovascular neurobiology into previous views of cardiovascular disease pathogeneses. These considerations lead us to propose the Neuroimmune Cardiovascular Circuit Hypothesis.

Abstract
Background Adults hospitalized for cardiovascular events are at high risk for post-discharge mortality. Hospital-based screening of health-related psychosocial risk factors is now prioritized by the Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum to achieve equitable, high-quality care. We tested our hypothesis that key patient-reported psychosocial and behavioral measures could predict post-hospitalization mortality in a cohort of adults hospitalized for a cardiovascular event. Methods This was a prospective cohort of adults hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Validated patient-reported measures of health literacy, social support, disease self-management, and socioeconomic status were used as predictors of interest. Cox survival analyses of mortality were conducted over a median 3.5-year follow-up (range: 1.25 - 5.5 years). Results Among 2,977 adults, 1,874 (63%) were hospitalized for acute coronary syndrome and 1,103 (37%) were hospitalized for acute decompensated heart failure; 60% were male; and the mean age was 53 years. After adjusting for demographic, clinical, and other psychosocial factors, mortality risk was greatest among patients who reported being unable to work due to disability (Hazard Ratio (HR) 2.36, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.73-3.21), who were retired (HR 2.14, 95% CI 1.60-2.87), and who reported unemployment (HR 1.99, 95% CI 1.30-3.06) as compared to those who were employed. Patient-reported measures of disease self-management, perceived health competence and exercise frequency, were also associated with mortality risk after full covariate adjustment (HR 0.86, 95% CI 0.73-1.00 per four-point increase), (HR 0.86, 95% CI 0.77-0.96 per three-day change), respectively. Conclusions Patient-reported measures of employment status independently predict post-discharge mortality after a cardiac hospitalization. Measure of disease self-management also have prognostic modest utility. Hospital-based screening of psychosocial risk is increasingly prioritized in legislative policy. Incorporating brief, valid measures of employment status and disease self-management factors may help target patients for psychosocial, financial, and rehabilitative resources during post-discharge transitions of care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The relationships between stress hormones and oxidative DNA damage have not yet been explored in human hypertension. We investigated the associations of urinary levels of cortisol or catecholamines with those of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, a marker of oxidative DNA damage in primary hypertension. METHODS Untreated 156 primary hypertensives without apparent cardiovascular diseases were entered into the study. Following blood sampling after an overnight fast, 24-h blood pressure monitoring and 24-h urinary sampling were performed simultaneously to determine 24-h averaged values for blood pressure and urinary levels of cortisol, catecholamines and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. RESULTS Urinary cortisol significantly correlated positively with urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine in all studied participants (r = 0.334, P < 0.001). Contrary, either urinary adrenaline or urinary noradrenaline did not significantly correlate with urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (r = 0.050, P = 0.553 or r = 0.063, P = 0.435). Additionally, the positive association of urinary cortisol with urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine remained highly significant after the adjustments for multiple confounders of oxidative stress such as age, gender, body mass index, smoking status, 24-h blood pressure, C-reactive protein and estimated glomerular filtration rate (partial r = 0.323, P < 0.001), although only approximately 10% of the variance in urinary cortisol was attributable to differences in urinary 8-OHdG (partial r2 = 0.104). Thus, our data indicate that cortisol but not catecholamines could at least partially contribute to the occurrence of oxidative DNA damage in primary hypertensives. CONCLUSION The present study suggested the possibility that the overactivation of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis rather than sympathoadrenal system could enhance oxidative stress and attendant DNA oxidation in uncomplicated primary hypertension.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often co-occurs with other psychiatric and physical diseases. However, available evidence on associations between ADHD and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is mixed. To systematically review, quantitatively synthesize, and appraise available evidence on the link between ADHD with CVDs, we searched relevant articles in PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science from inception to May 1, 2022. Study quality was assessed by using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and random-effects model meta-analyses were performed. A total of 18,391,169 (ADHD: n = 421,224) individuals from 11 studies were included in our systematic review and 8,196,648 (ADHD = 332,619) individuals from five studies were included in the main meta-analysis of adjusted estimates. Pooled estimates showed that ADHD was significantly associated with an increased risk of CVDs in analyses based on adjusted effect size (odds ratio (OR) = 1.96; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.19-2.23, Q = 140.74, P Q < 0.001, I 2 = 97.2%). When restricted among adults, the heterogeneity declined to null (OR = 1.73; 95% CI = 1.14-2.62, Q = 6.28, P Q = 0.10, I 2 = 6.28%), suggesting age might be the main source of heterogeneity. In subgroup analyses, we found increased risk of CVDs associated with ADHD across age groups, type of CVDs, and data sources. This systematic review and meta-analyses indicate that ADHD is associated with increased risk for CVDs, but further studies with various study designs are warranted to advance the understanding of the underlying mechanisms for the observed association between ADHD and CVDs. Additional research is also needed to resolve the role of ADHD medications which remains unclear due to the limited number of primary studies exploring this issue.

Abstract
Background The association between personality traits and hypertension is complex and has so far not been studied in depth. Objective The present study aims to explore the connection between the Big Five personality traits and hypertension. Methods This case control study includes 310 participants, and the relationship between personality traits and hypertension was investigated in normotensive and hypertensive patients by the Big Five Inventory-10. We examined the association of each of the Big Five personality traits in hypertensive patients and a control group using binary logistic regression analysis. Results The findings of the study revealed that amongst the Big Five personality factors, low conscientiousness (OR: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.92-1.29, P<0.005) and high neuroticism (OR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.45-0.66, P<0.001) were related with high risk of hypertension. Male, older people, and physically inactive individuals have been found to be at a higher risk of hypertension. No significant relationship was found between hypertension and marital status, education, or smoking habits. Conclusion These results suggested that a low score in conscientiousness trait and a high neuroticism score may be an additional risk factor of hypertension. Thus, it may be worthy to investigate further in order to identify patients at risk and develop a more individual treatment strategy. Cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacological options can be used preemptively in high-risk patients.

Abstract
Stress is a key driver of cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet the contribution of psychosocial stressors to the development of CVD has not been systematically examined in United States (U.S.) populations. The objective of this study was to assess prospective associations of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), social isolation, and job strain with CVD mortality. Data were from the large, nationally representative, population-based Health and Retirement Study (HRS). ACEs, social isolation and job strain were assessed using validated survey instruments at baseline between 2006-2008, and death information was followed up through 2018. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to examine prospective associations of ACEs, social isolation, and job strain with CVD mortality among 4046 older employees free from CVD at baseline. During 42,149 person-years of follow-up time, 59 death cases of CVD were reported. After adjustment for covariates, ACEs and job strain were significantly associated with increased risk of CVD mortality (aHR and 95% CI = 3.67 [1.59, 8.48] and 2.24 [1.21, 4.11], respectively), whereas social isolation demonstrated an inflated but nonsignificant association (aHR and 95% CI = 1.62 [0.72, 3.66]). These findings highlight the role of psychosocial exposures as novel and clinically relevant risk factors for CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in asthma have mainly focused on clinical and environmental determinants. Little is known about the role of social determinants on HRQoL in asthma. OBJECTIVES We aimed to investigate the association between social deprivation and HRQoL in asthma. METHODS A total of 691 adult asthmatics from Canada, India, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom were administered a digital questionnaire containing demographic information and questions about social and psychological attributes, sleep disturbances, and alcohol abuse. HRQoL was measured using the Short Form of the Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire (SF-CRQ). We analyzed the direct and indirect relationships between social deprivation and HRQoL using structural equation models with social deprivation as a latent variable. We tested for mediation via anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and alcohol abuse. RESULTS We found that less social deprivation (latent variable) was directly associated with better SF-CRQ domain scores such as dyspnea (regression coefficient β: 0.33; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.07 to 0.58), fatigue (β: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.14 to 0.64), and emotional function (β: 0.37; 95% CI: 0.11 to 0.62), but with the worse mastery score (β: -0.29; 95% CI: -0.55 to -0.03); however, those associations varied across participating countries. We also observed that among all individual social deprivation indicators, education, companionship, emotional support, instrumental support, and social isolation were directly associated with HRQoL, and the relationship between social deprivation and HRQoL was mediated through anxiety and sleep disturbances. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrated that less social deprivation was directly, and indirectly through less anxiety and better sleep quality, associated with better HRQoL in asthma.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although stressful life events (i.e., stressors) and depression are often assumed to be linked, the relation between stressors and incident depression is rarely studied, particularly in the military. The National Guard is a part-time subset of the U.S. military for whom civilian life stressors may be particularly salient, due to the soldiers' dual roles and frequent transitions between military and civilian life. METHODS We used a dynamic cohort study of National Guard members from 2010 to 2016 to investigate the relationship between recent stressful experiences (e.g., divorce) and incident depression, with an exploratory analysis of effect modification by income. RESULTS Respondents endorsing at least one of nine past-year stressful events (a time-varying exposure, lagged by 1 year) had almost twice the adjusted rate of incident depression compared to those with no stressful events (HR = 1.8; 95% CI 1.4, 2.4). This association may be modified by income: among individuals making under $80,000 per year, those with past-year stressors had twice the rate of depression compared to those with no stressors, but among those making over $80,000, past-year stressors were associated with only 1.2 times the rate of depression. CONCLUSION Stressful life events outside of deployment are important determinants of incident depression among National Guard servicemembers, but the effect of these events may be buffered by higher income.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low socioeconomic position in childhood is associated with greater cardiometabolic disease risk later in life. The aim of the current study is to examine the mediating impact of mental health on the association between childhood socioeconomic position and cardiometabolic disease risk in young adulthood. METHODS We used a combination of national registers, longitudinal questionnaire-data and clinical measurements from a sub-sample (N = 259) of a Danish youth cohort. Childhood socioeconomic position was indicated by the educational level of the mother and the father at age 14. Mental health was measured by four different symptom scales at four age-points (age 15, 18, 21 and 28), and combined into one global score. Cardiometabolic disease risk was measured by nine biomarkers at age 28-30 and combined into one global score by sample-specific z-scores. We conducted analyses within the causal inference framework and evaluated the associations using nested counterfactuals. RESULTS We found an inverse association between childhood socioeconomic position and cardiometabolic disease risk in young adulthood. The proportion of the association which was mediated by mental health was 10 (95% CI: -4; 24) % and 12 (95% CI: -4; 28) % using educational level of the mother and the father as indicator, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Accumulated poorer mental health in childhood, youth and early adulthood partially explained the association between low childhood socioeconomic position and increased cardiometabolic disease risk in young adulthood. The results of the causal inference analyses rely on the underlying assumptions and correct depiction of the DAG. Since these are not all testable, we cannot exclude violations that potentially could bias the estimates. If the findings can be replicated, this would support a causal relationship and direct potentials for intervention. However, the findings point to a potential for intervention in young age in order to impede the translation of childhood social stratification into later cardiometabolic disease risk disparities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate differences in transient endothelial dysfunction (TED) with mental stress in Black and non-Black individuals with coronary heart disease (CHD), and their potential impact on cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS We examined 812 patients with stable CHD between June 2011 and March 2016 and followed through February 2020 at a university-affiliated hospital network. Flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) was assessed before and 30 minutes after mental stress. TED was defined as a lower poststress FMD than prestress FMD. We compared prestress FMD, post-stress FMD, and TED between Black and non-Black participants. In both groups, we examined the association of TED with an adjudicated composite end point of cardiovascular death or nonfatal myocardial infarction (first and recurring events) after adjusting for demographic, clinical, and socioeconomic factors. RESULTS Prestress FMD was lower in Black than non-Black participants (3.7 [2.8] versus 4.9 [3.8], p < .001) and significantly declined with mental stress in both groups. TED occurred more often in Black (76%) than non-Black patients (67%; multivariable-adjusted odds ratio = 1.6, 95% confidence interval = 1.5-1.7). Over a median (interquartile range) follow-up period of 75 (65-82) months, 142 (18%) patients experienced either cardiovascular death or nonfatal myocardial infarction. Black participants had a 41.9% higher risk of the study outcome than non-Black participants (95% confidence interval = 1.01-1.95). TED with mental stress explained 69% of this excess risk. CONCLUSIONS Among CHD patients, Black individuals are more likely than non-Black individuals to develop endothelial dysfunction with mental stress, which in turn explains a substantial portion of their excess risk of adverse events.

Abstract
Recent studies have suggested a link between déjà vu and cardiovascular diseases. While the mechanism for this association is not fully understood, one theory suggests that déjà vu may be a result of a disruption in the temporal lobe, which is also responsible for regulating blood pressure and heart rate. Another theory suggests that there may be a shared genetic factor between the two conditions, with certain individuals being predisposed to experiencing both. The APOE (Apolipoprotein E) gene, in particular, has been associated with memory processing, Alzheimer's disease, and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The protein encoded by this gene is involved in the metabolism of lipoproteins, including cholesterol and triglycerides, and is also involved in the development of atherosclerosis, which is a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain how the APOE4 isoform contributes to CVD, including impairing the clearance of lipoproteins, promoting inflammation, and causing endothelial dysfunction. Psychological factors such as stress may also contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease, and déjà vu may be associated with emotional arousal and stress. Further research is needed to fully understand the link between déjà vu and cardiovascular diseases and to explore potential treatment options for individuals who experience both conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is evidence that psychological distress increases the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but implications for prevention remain elusive. We examined the association between chronic stress and the German Diabetes Risk Score (GDRS) among adults without diabetes in Germany. METHODS The study population consisted of 4654 persons aged 18 to 64 years without known diabetes drawn from the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Adults (2008-2011). The predicted 5-year T2D risk (in percent) was estimated using the GDRS. Perceived chronic stress was assessed by the Screening Scale of the Trier Inventory for the Assessment of Chronic Stress and categorized into "up to average," "above average," and "high." The cross-sectional association of chronic stress with log-transformed GDRS (expressed as geometric mean ratio [GMR]) was analyzed in multivariable linear regression models. Covariables included age, sex, community size, region, educational level, living alone, social support, depression, and alcohol use. RESULTS The mean predicted 5-year T2D risk rates were 2.7%, 2.9%, and 3.0% for chronic stress up to average, above average, and high chronic stress, respectively. Adjusted mean predicted 5-year risk was significantly higher among persons with chronic stress above average (GMR = 1.10, 95% confidence interval = 1.02-1.19) and high stress (GMR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.06-1.39) compared with persons with chronic stress up to average. No interactions with sex or other covariables were found. CONCLUSIONS Perceived chronic stress is independently associated with an increased predicted T2D risk in cross-sectional analysis and should be considered as T2D risk factor in longitudinal studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease may be the main reason for stagnant growth in life expectancy in the United States since 2010. The American Heart Association recently released an updated algorithm for evaluating cardiovascular health (CVH)-Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score. We aimed to quantify the associations of CVH levels, estimated by the LE8 score, with life expectancy in a nationally representative sample of US adults. METHODS We included 23 003 nonpregnant, noninstitutionalized participants aged 20 to 79 years who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2018 and whose mortality was identified through linkage to the National Death Index through December 31, 2019. The overall CVH was evaluated by the LE8 score (range, 0-100), as well as the score for each component of diet, physical activity, tobacco/nicotine exposure, sleep duration, body mass index, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure. Life table method was used to estimate life expectancy by levels of the CVH. RESULTS During a median of 7.8 years of follow-up, 1359 total deaths occurred. The estimated life expectancy at age 50 years was 27.3 years (95% CI, 26.1-28.4), 32.9 years (95% CI, 32.3-33.4), and 36.2 years (95% CI, 34.2-38.2) in participants with low (LE8 score <50), moderate (50≤ LE8 score <80), and high (LE8 score ≥80) CVH, respectively. Equivalently, participants with high CVH had an average 8.9 (95% CI, 6.2-11.5) more years of life expectancy at age 50 years compared with those with low CVH. On average, 42.6% of the gained life expectancy at age 50 years from adhering to high CVH was attributable to reduced cardiovascular disease death. Similarly significant associations of CVH with life expectancy were observed in men and women, respectively. Similarly significant associations of CVH with life expectancy were observed in White participants and Black participants but not in Mexican participants. CONCLUSIONS Adhering to a high CVH, defined as the LE8 score, is related to a considerably increased life expectancy in US adults, but more research needs to be done in other races and ethnicities (eg, Hispanic and Asian).

Abstract
Commonly used prediction models have been primarily constructed without taking physical activity into account. Using the Kailuan physical activity cohorts from Asymptomatic Polyvascular Abnormalities in Community (APAC) study, we developed a 9-year cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction equation. Participants in this study were included from APAC cohort, which included 5440 participants from the Kailuan cohort in China. Cox proportional hazard regression model was applied to construct sex-specific risk prediction equations for the physical activity cohort (PA equation). Proposed equations were compared with the 10-year risk prediction model, which is developed for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk in Chinese cohorts (China-PAR equation). C statistics of PA equations were 0.755 (95% confidence interval, 0.750-0.758) for men and 0.801 (95% confidence interval, 0.790-0.813) for women. The estimated area under the receiver operating characteristic curves in the validation set shows that the PA equations perform as good as the China-PAR. From calibration among four categories of predicted risks, the predicted risk rates by PA equations were almost identical to the Kaplan-Meier observed rates. Therefore, our developed sex-specific PA equations have effective performance for predicting CVD for physically active cohorts in the physical activity cohort in Kailuan.

Abstract
While it is well known from numerous epidemiologic investigations that social determinants (socioeconomic, environmental, and psychosocial factors exposed to over the life-course) can dramatically impact cardiovascular health, the molecular mechanisms by which social determinants lead to poor cardiometabolic outcomes are not well understood. This review comprehensively summarizes a variety of current topics surrounding the biological effects of adverse social determinants (i.e., the biology of adversity), linking translational and laboratory studies with epidemiologic findings. With a strong focus on the biological effects of chronic stress, we highlight an array of studies on molecular and immunological signaling in the context of social determinants of health (SDoH). The main topics covered include biomarkers of sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activation, and the role of inflammation in the biology of adversity focusing on glucocorticoid resistance and key inflammatory cytokines linked to psychosocial and environmental stressors (PSES). We then further discuss the effect of SDoH on immune cell distribution and characterization by subset, receptor expression, and function. Lastly, we describe epigenetic regulation of the chronic stress response and effects of SDoH on telomere length and aging. Ultimately, we highlight critical knowledge gaps for future research as we strive to develop more targeted interventions that account for SDoH to improve cardiometabolic health for at-risk, vulnerable populations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Depression and anxiety are common mental health disorders among adolescents and negatively impact their physical and mental health. Depression and anxiety also exert a tremendous economic burden to society. But in China, there is no systematic review to state the exact prevalence of adolescent depression and anxiety; there is also a lack of systematic reviews of factors that influence depression and anxiety. Hence, in this systematic review, we aim to summarise the current evidence of the prevalence of and factors influencing depression and anxiety among Chinese adolescents. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This protocol was developed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols guidelines. We will comprehensively search four English databases (PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL in EBSCO interface, PsycINFO in ProQuest interface) and three Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang and SinoMed) for studies from inception to 31 August 2022. Screening for eligible studies and data extraction will be conducted by two reviewers independently, and all discrepancies will be resolved through group discussion. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Because this is a review of published studies, no ethical approval is required. The results will be reported in a peer-reviewed journal or disseminated at relevant conferences. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42022299943.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Valvular heart diseases (VHDs) are one of the dominant causes of cardiovascular abnormalities that have been associated with high mortality rates globally. Rapid and accurate diagnosis of the early stage of VHD based on cardiac phonocardiogram (PCG) signal is critical that allows for optimum medication and reduction of mortality rate. METHODS To this end, the current study proposes novel deep learning (DL)-based high-performance VHD detection frameworks that are relatively simpler in terms of network structures, yet effective for accurately detecting multiple VHDs. We present three different frameworks considering both 1D and 2D PCG raw signals. For 1D PCG, Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) and linear prediction cepstral coefficients (LPCC) features, whereas, for 2D PCG, various deep convolutional neural networks (D-CNNs) features are extracted. Additionally, nature/bio-inspired algorithms (NIA/BIA) including particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA) have been utilized for automatic and efficient feature selection directly from the raw PCG signal. To further improve the performance of the classifier, vision transformer (ViT) has been implemented levering the self-attention mechanism on the time frequency representation (TFR) of 2D PCG signal. Our extensive study presents a comparative performance analysis and the scope of enhancement for the combination of different descriptors, classifiers, and feature selection algorithms. MAIN RESULTS Among all classifiers, ViT provides the best performance by achieving mean average accuracy Acc of 99.90 % and F1-score of 99.95 % outperforming current state-of-the-art VHD classification models. CONCLUSIONS The present research provides a robust and efficient DL-based end-to-end PCG signal classification framework for designing a automated high-performance VHD diagnosis system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between personality and the risk of IHD mortality among Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) survivors, and to investigate whether personality traits affected the increase in IHD mortality observed after the GEJE. METHODS We analyzed data for 29,065 men and women in the Miyagi Cohort Study who were 40-64 years old at baseline. We divided the participants into quartiles based on scores for each of the four personality subscales (extraversion, neuroticism, psychoticism, and lie), using the Japanese version of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Short Form. We divided the eight years before and after the GEJE event (11 March 2011) into two period, and examined the relationship between personality traits and the risk of IHD mortality. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to estimate the multivariate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the risk of IHD mortality according to each personality subscale category. RESULTS In the four years before the GEJE, neuroticism was significantly associated with an increased risk of IHD mortality. Compared with the lowest category for neuroticism, the multivariate-adjusted HR (95% CI) for IHD mortality in the highest category was 2.19 (1.03-4.67) (p-trend = 0.12). In contrast, no statistically significant association between neuroticism and IHD mortality was observed in the four years after the GEJE. CONCLUSION This finding suggests that the observed increase in IHD mortality after the GEJE can be attributed to risk factors other than personality.

Abstract
Objective We conducted a scoping review with the aim of comprehensively investigating what tools or methods have been examined in general practice research that capture a wide range of psychosocial problems (PSPs) and serve to identify patients and highlight their characteristics. Methods We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews and the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewer's Manual on scoping reviews. A systematic search was conducted in four electronic databases (Medline [Ovid], Web of Science Core Collection, PsycInfo, Cochrane Library) for quantitative and qualitative studies in English, Spanish, French, and German with no time limit. The protocol was registered with Open Science Framework and published in BMJ Open. Results Of the 839 articles identified, 66 met the criteria for study eligibility, from which 61 instruments were identified. The publications were from 18 different countries, with most studies employing an observational design and including mostly adult patients. Among all instruments, 22 were reported as validated, which we present in this paper. Overall, quality criteria were reported differently, with studies generally providing little detail. Most of the instruments were used as paper and pencil questionnaires. We found considerable heterogeneity in the theoretical conceptualisation, definition, and measurement of PSPs, ranging from psychiatric case findings to specific social problems. Discussion and conclusion This review presents a number of tools and methods that have been studied and used in general practice research. Adapted and tailored to local circumstances, practice populations, and needs, they could be useful for identifying patients with PSPs in daily GP practice; however, this requires further research. Given the heterogeneity of studies and instruments, future research efforts should include both a more structured evaluation of instruments and the incorporation of consensus methods to move forward from instrument research to actual use in daily practice.

Abstract
While associations between stress and hypertension have been documented, little research has examined the association between coping and hypertension, especially in the context of understanding racial disparities. Utilizing data from the CHDS-DISPAR study, we examine the association between avoidant coping and hypertension among adults age 50 while assessing for potential differences across (1) coping in response to the general stress and discrimination and (2) African American and White racial groups. Coping was measured using a 9-item scale with an avoidant coping subscale (e.g., drinking alcohol). Mean avoidance coping scores were calculated for both general stress and discrimination. No racial differences in avoidant coping were found. Within our sample (n = 414), there was a high burden of hypertension among African American respondents compared to White respondents (50.3% vs. 22.6%). Models assessed associations between avoidant coping and hypertension adjusted for sociodemographic factors, obesity, and either experience of stress or discrimination depending on the coping domain examined. Avoidant coping in response to the general stress and discrimination was associated with increased hypertension among White respondents (PR: 1.63 [95%CI 1.01, 2.24]; PR: 1.69 [95%CI 1.12, 2.26], respectively) and no associations among African American respondents (PR: 0.83 [95%CI 0.57, 1.09]; PR: 0.82 [95%CI 0.52, 1.12], respectively). This research suggests that racial disparities in hypertension may not be attributable to individual-level coping behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Between 20 % and 30 % of teens suffer from depression or anxiety before reaching adulthood, and up to half also use or misuse alcohol. Although theories suggest bidirectional links between harmful alcohol use (e.g., binge drinking) and internalizing symptoms (i.e., depression and anxiety), empirical evidence to-date has been mixed. Systematic reviews have attributed mixed findings to limitations in study design, such as the utilization of between-person analyses and the focus on unidirectional effects. The goal of this study was to address these limitations by assessing bidirectional within-person associations between internalizing symptoms and binge drinking over the course of 5 years in the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) sample, a large cohort recruited at ages 12-21 and followed annually on substance use and psychiatric functioning. METHODS We used latent curve models with structured residuals to examine within-person lagged associations between depression, anxiety, and past month counts of binge drinking using NCANDA data (N = 831). Analyses were supplemented with post-hoc power simulations. RESULTS We found marginal evidence linking binge drinking with subsequent depression symptoms one year later among females. We found no evidence that depression or anxiety predicted subsequent binge drinking despite sufficient power. CONCLUSIONS Social and cognitive consequences of binge drinking may predict later depression symptoms in adolescence and young adulthood for young women, though there was little evidence favoring self-medication models for binge drinking. We note several moderating variables and common factor mechanisms that may better explain this link.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, and experiences of psychological trauma have been associated with subsequent CVD onset. Identifying key pathways connecting trauma with CVD has the potential to inform more targeted screening and intervention efforts to offset elevated cardiovascular risk. In this narrative review, we summarize the evidence for key psychological and biological mechanisms linking experiences of trauma with CVD risk. Additionally, we describe various methodologies for measuring these mechanisms in an effort to inform future research related to potential pathways. With regard to mechanisms involving posttraumatic psychopathology, the vast majority of research on psychological distress after trauma and CVD has focused on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), even though posttraumatic psychopathology can manifest in other ways as well. Substantial evidence suggests that PTSD predicts the onset of a range of cardiovascular outcomes in trauma-exposed men and women, yet more research is needed to better understand posttraumatic psychopathology more comprehensively and how it may relate to CVD. Further, dysregulation of numerous biological systems may occur after trauma and in the presence of posttraumatic psychopathology; these processes of immune system dysregulation and elevated inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, renin-angiotensin system dysregulation, and accelerated biological aging may all contribute to subsequent cardiovascular risk, although more research on these pathways in the context of traumatic stress is needed. Given that many of these mechanisms are closely intertwined, future research using a systems biology approach may prove fruitful for elucidating how processes unfold to contribute to CVD after trauma.

Nanocarriers like polymeric nanoparticles, mesoporous nanoparticles, nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes, dendrimers, liposomes, metallic nanoparticles, nanomedicine, and engineered nanomaterials are used as carriage systems for targeted delivery at specific sites of affected areas in the body. Nanomedicine has rapidly grown to treat certain diseases like brain cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and many others. These nanomedicines can improve drug bioavailability and drug absorption time, reduce release time, eliminate drug aggregation, and enhance drug solubility in the blood. Nanomedicine has introduced a new era for drug carriage by refining the therapeutic directories of the energetic pharmaceutical elements engineered within nanoparticles. In this context, the vital information on engineered nanoparticles was reviewed and conferred towards the role in drug carriage systems to treat many ailments. All these nanocarriers were tested in vitro and in vivo. In the coming years, nanomedicines can improve human health more effectively by adding more advanced techniques into the drug delivery system.

Abstract
Purpose Social support may have benefits on cardiovascular health (CVH). CVH is evaluated using seven important metrics (Life's Simple 7; LS7) established by the American Heart Association (e.g., smoking, diet). However, evidence from longitudinal studies is limited and inconsistent. The objective of this study is to examine the longitudinal relationship between social support and CVH, and assess whether psychosocial risks (e.g., anger and stress) modify the relationship in a racially/ethnically diverse population. Methods Participants from three harmonized cohort studies - Jackson Heart Study, Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America, and Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis - were included. Repeated-measures modified Poisson regression models were used to examine the overall relationship between social support (in tertiles) and CVH (LS7 metric), and to assess for effect modification by psychosocial risk. Results Among 7724 participants, those with high (versus low) social support had an adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for ideal or intermediate (versus poor) CVH of 0.99 (0.96-1.03). For medium (versus low) social support, the aPR (95% CI) was 1.01 (0.98-1.05). There was evidence for modification by employment and anger. Those with medium (versus low) social support had an aPR (95% CI) of 1.04 (0.99-1.10) among unemployed or low anger participants. Corresponding results for employed or high anger participants were 0.99 (0.94-1.03) and 0.97 (0.91-1.03), respectively. Conclusion Overall, we observed no strong evidence for an association between social support and CVH. However, some psychosocial risks may be modifiers. Prospective studies are needed to assess the social support-CVH relationship by psychosocial risks in racially/ethnically diverse populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE African American women are exposed to multiple adverse psychosocial factors, including racism, discrimination, poverty, neighborhood stress, anxiety, and depression. The impact of these psychosocial factors on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in women during early adulthood is limited. This review aims to summarize and synthesize the recent literature on psychosocial factors related to CVD risk in young African American women. METHODS We conducted a comprehensive search of the literature in PubMed, APA PsycINFO, and CINAHL. We systematically reviewed the literature for studies examining associations between psychosocial factors (e.g. racism, discrimination, neighborhood stress, anxiety) and CVD risk factors (e.g. body mass index [BMI], blood pressure, diabetes) in African American women age 19-24 years. Eligible studies measured at least one psychosocial factor, a CVD risk factor, and included young adult African American women (age 19-24) or reported sex-stratified analyses. RESULTS We identified nine studies that met our inclusion criteria: six cross-sectional and three longitudinal studies. Of these, eight studies reported that psychosocial factors (i.e. perceived stress, racial discrimination, internalized racism, depression) are related to higher BMI and blood pressure. The majority of studies were conducted among college students or had a small sample size (<200). The quality of six studies was rated as excellent; the remainder were good and fair. CONCLUSIONS Findings from this review suggest that exposure to adverse psychosocial factors may be related to increased CVD risk in early adulthood (age 19-24) in African American women. However, larger prospective analyses are necessary to examine these associations.

Abstract
While multiple factors are associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), many environmental exposures that may contribute to CVD have not been examined. To understand environmental effects on cardiovascular health, we performed an exposome-wide association study (ExWAS), a hypothesis-free approach, using survey data on endogenous and exogenous exposures at home and work and data from health and medical histories from the North Carolina-based Personalized Environment and Genes Study (PEGS) (n = 5015). We performed ExWAS analyses separately on six cardiovascular outcomes (cardiac arrhythmia, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart attack, stroke, and a combined atherogenic-related outcome comprising angina, angioplasty, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke) using logistic regression and a false discovery rate of 5%. For each CVD outcome, we tested 502 single exposures and built multi-exposure models using the deletion-substitution-addition (DSA) algorithm. To evaluate complex nonlinear relationships, we employed the knockoff boosted tree (KOBT) algorithm. We adjusted all analyses for age, sex, race, BMI, and annual household income. ExWAS analyses revealed novel associations that include blood type A (Rh-) with heart attack (OR[95%CI] = 8.2[2.2:29.7]); paint exposures with stroke (paint related chemicals: 6.1[2.2:16.0], acrylic paint: 8.1[2.6:22.9], primer: 6.7[2.2:18.6]); biohazardous materials exposure with arrhythmia (1.8[1.5:2.3]); and higher paternal education level with reduced risk of multiple CVD outcomes (stroke, heart attack, coronary artery disease, and combined atherogenic outcome). In multi-exposure models, trouble sleeping and smoking remained important risk factors. KOBT identified significant nonlinear effects of sleep disorder, regular intake of grapefruit, and a family history of blood clotting problems for multiple CVD outcomes (combined atherogenic outcome, congestive heart failure, and coronary artery disease). In conclusion, using statistics and machine learning, these findings identify novel potential risk factors for CVD, enable hypothesis generation, provide insights into the complex relationships between risk factors and CVD, and highlight the importance of considering multiple exposures when examining CVD outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Naringenin, a natural resource-derived flavanone, exhibits a plethora of pharmacological properties. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of naringenin on obesity-associated hypertension and its underlying mechanism. METHODS Obesity-associated hypertension rat model was established with a high-fat diet (HFD) and was administrated with naringenin (25, 50, 100 mg/kg). Body and fat weights were recorded and blood pressure was measured. Serum lipid parameters (cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein [LDL], high-density lipoprotein [HDL], and triglycerides), oxidative stress biomarkers (malondialdehyde [MDA], superoxide dismutase [SOD], nitrite oxide [NO], and glutathione [GSH]), and adipocytokines (leptin and adiponectin) were determined. The expressions of signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 3 were determined by using Western blotting. RESULTS Treatment with naringenin (100 mg/kg) reduced body and fat weight in HFD-induced rats. Besides, treatment with naringenin (50 and 100 mg/kg) reduced blood pressure and regulated lipid parameters by decreasing cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL and increasing HDL. Treatment with naringenin (50 and 100 mg/kg) reduced serum MDA and NO, whereas it increased serum SOD and GSH. Furthermore, treatment with naringenin (50 and 100 mg/kg) regulated adipocytokines and decreased the phosphorylation of STAT3. CONCLUSION Naringenin ameliorates obesity-associated hypertension by regulating lipid disorder and oxidative stress.
