Mosques and Public Health Promotion: A Scoping Review of Faith-Driven Health Interventions

BACKGROUND

Religious institutions play a crucial role in health promotion and hold significant influence in the public health field.

AIM

The aim of this review is to examine outcomes of health-promoting interventions involving the use of mosques as the intervention venue, its role in promoting health behavior change, and the role of theory in each intervention.

METHODS

A scoping review was conducted across 17 databases for relevant publications published up to and including August 2023 that involved the use of mosques as the intervention venue. Fourteen articles met inclusion criteria and were reviewed.

RESULTS

The studies featured a wide range of interventions. However, only eight of these studies integrated theoretical frameworks into their approaches, indicating a need for more structured guidance in this field. These theoretical frameworks included Participatory Action Research (PAR), the theory of planned behavior, behavior-change constructs, the patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) framework, and prolonged exposure techniques within Islamic principles. The review identified three main health-focused intervention categories: mental health, prevention, and communication, each providing valuable insights into initiatives within Muslim communities.

CONCLUSIONS

This review underscores the significance of inclusive and culturally sensitive health interventions, emphasizing the effectiveness of faith-based approaches in improving health outcomes, promoting positive health behaviors, and addressing communication and cultural barriers. The reviews findings stress the need for further research that incorporates theoretical frameworks and tailored interventions to meet the specific cultural needs of these communities, ultimately contributing to enhanced well-being within them.

Strengthening the Voices of Hispanic/Latine Immigrants Managing Chronic Disease: A Mixed Methods Approach to Understanding Perspectives of Health

Individuals who migrate from their home country face a variety of challenges while adapting to the culture in the United States. Immigrant communities are at a significantly higher risk for poor health outcomes; therefore, assessing healthcare treatment for diverse and resilient immigrant populations, including Hispanic/Latine communities, is crucial to preserving their health, culture, and spirit. A paucity of literature exists surrounding perceptions of well-being in immigrant, Hispanic/Latine adults managing chronic diseases. Past studies have shown a discrepancy between providers' and patients' perceptions of healthcare options for overall well-being. We aim to share varying perspectives found within our work geared towards improving the quality of life for Hispanic/Latine immigrants managing chronic disease, especially type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The primary objective of this article is to strengthen the understanding of intersections between social, physical, financial, and spiritual health within an (im)migrant Hispanic/Latine community using semi-structured ethnographic interviews. These interviews have highlighted community resilience, demonstrating that individuals can adapt to major life transitions while maintaining balance across dimensions of health. This knowledge could be implemented by actively listening to patient concerns regarding their health dimensions to improve individualized and patient-centric care.

The community health worker experience and perception toward mental illness: A multi-settings cross-sectional study in Indonesia

BACKGROUND

The experiences and perceptions of Community Health Workers toward mental illness are vital for tailoring interventions, reducing stigma, improving access to services, and fostering community engagement in mental health initiatives.

AIMS

This study investigates the experiences of community health worker and their perception of mental illness.

METHODS

A multi-settings cross-sectional study was conducted among 487 Community Health Workers. Their experience and perception toward mental illness were studied with questionnaires, which examined their general perception, religious-related perception, cause, treatment, and expectation for mental treatment.

RESULTS

Most participants concurred that serving as a community health worker enhances their communication abilities (90.4%), strengthens connections with community health center staff (84.8%), boosts self-confidence (84.6%), and refines their capacity to identify signs of mental disorders (77%). Most notably, they consider their fellow community health workers essential to their extended family. Furthermore, a notable proportion associates' mental illness with religious elements, with 19.5% believing it can result from a lack of religious worship and a minority attributing it to witchcraft or black magic (3.5%). In terms of treatment, 14.2% think Ruqyah can cure mental illness, 6.4% believe in treatment by religious scholars, and a similar percentage (6.4%) think no medication or treatment is necessary for mental problems.

CONCLUSION

Participants overwhelmingly recognize the positive impact of serving as community health workers, citing improvements in communication, relationships with health center staff, self-confidence, and mental disorder identification. The strong bond among community health workers, likened to an extended family, emphasizes their collective importance. Additionally, the majority advocates for compassionate treatment of individuals with mental illness. These findings underscore the complex interplay of professional, communal, and cultural elements in addressing community mental health.

"Gutting It Out" Does Not Work: Why Mental Health Days are Needed

College student mental health issues negatively impact academic performance. Over half of college students in the U.S. report a mental health issue, with 60% reporting one at the two-year mark. Even when aware of such mental health issues, students are still hesitant to seek treatment. As such, investigating perceptions of mental health time off may illuminate perceived usefulness of such policies as well as potential processes for defining and implementing such policies. This study sought to answer the question, "What are the perspectives of time-off for mental health?" Using Reddit's responses, this study extracted (N = 392) quotes and used thematic analysis to identify four main themes. Implications include the need for school-level mental health time-off policies or integration of instructors' policies into their syllabi for transparency to students, which may alleviate student stress and further stigmatization.

Ethnic Determinants of Health and Medication Use for Depression Among US Latinx Adults

BACKGROUND

Medication use for depression among US Latinx adults is low (34%) and commonly associated with systems-related and individual-related cultural factors. Social determinants of health (SDH) include economic, environmental, educational, community, and healthcare systems factors. Ethnic determinants of health (EDH) are SDH factors specific to an ethnic group and described by an ethnic and disparities framework.

OBJECTIVE

To assess relationships between EDH factors and depression medication use among non-Latinx White (NLW) and Latinx adult populations using data from a weighted national sample for hypothesis building.

METHODS

Weighted responses to 2015-2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health surveys from NLW, Latinx, and Latinx adult respondents from Puerto Rico, Mexico, and other Latinx countries were compared. Bivariate analyses were conducted using 2-way cross tabulation and a Wald chi-square test of association. EDH variables were characterized within the construct domains of systems-related geographic location, education, and economic stability, and individual-related cultural factors.

RESULTS

Prescription medication use for depressive symptoms is 16.6% (P < 0.05) lower among a national sample of Latinx compared with NLW adults with major depressive episode (MDE). Many differences among systems-level EDH variables between Latinx and NLW populations with MDE were also found between populations with depression medication use. Of note, seeing a primary care provider or psychologist or social worker was significantly different among populations with MDE but not for those with depression medication use. Individual-related cultural EDH variables of overall health and serious psychological distress were significantly worse for Latinx than NLW populations with depression medication use. However, stigma, healing beliefs, and religious beliefs were not different between populations with MDE or depression medication use. Differences between certain Latinx populations with depression medication use were found with limited English proficiency and living in poverty. EDH variables for environment-physical characteristics or community and interpersonal levels of analysis were not represented within the NSDUH survey.

CONCLUSION

Seeing a primary care provider or behavioral health specialist, depression severity, and overall health status appear to be important factors related to depression medication use among Latinx adults. Given the limitations of these analyses, multivariate analyses of EDH factors and other Latinx populations are warranted.

Evaluation of Culturally Informed and Flexible Family-Based Treatment for Adolescents (CIFFTA) implemented in community-based settings

Effective family-based interventions are needed for youth who are experiencing emotional and behavioral difficulties and who are impacted by powerful environmental stressors. Culturally Informed and Flexible Family-Based Treatment for Adolescents (CIFFTA) is a manualized and evidence-based, multicomponent family-based treatment that has been shown to be efficacious in research settings. The purpose of this paper is to report on the effectiveness of implementing CIFFTA for the treatment of Latino and Black youth and families in community settings. Utilization of services offered and changes in youth presenting problems and family functioning were used to evaluate the program. Two hundred thirty-two youth (11-18 years of age) and their caregivers were recruited over 2 years and CIFFTA was delivered by experienced masters-level family therapists over a 12-16-week period. Seventy-six percent met the 8-session criteria for retention in treatment and 71% completed treatment. Results showed significant improvements in youth behavioral and emotional presenting problems, reduction in family conflict and improvement in family cohesion and communication. Caregiver well-being such as reductions in parental stress, relational frustration, and improvement in parental confidence also showed significant improvement. Analyses of reliable change indices showed a substantial improvement in youth who entered the program in the clinical range of presenting problems. The findings point to CIFFTA's ability to retain youth and families who tend to underutilize needed services, to significant reductions in presenting problems, and to improvements in family functioning when implemented in a community setting.

A Qualitative Analysis of Latina Migrant Farmworkers' Perception of Mental Health: Voices From Wisconsin

INTRODUCTION

Despite evidence showing Latinos' high prevalence of mental health, little is known about Latina migrant farmworkers' mental health experiences, especially those working in Midwestern states. Considering the multiple vulnerabilities observed among Latina migrant farmworkers, it is necessary to gain insight from own accounts and perceptions of mental health and mental health-seeking experiences.

METHOD

A qualitative descriptive approach, using in-depth semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions, served to retrieve data from 34 Latina migrant farmworkers. This study was informed by Chicana, postcolonial, and Black feminist epistemologies.

RESULTS

Thematic analysis identified themes within the data. These findings pertained to the conceptualization of mental health within the contexts of family, capacities, stigma, denial, and faith.

DISCUSSION

Our results demonstrate the need for health care providers to consider Latina migrant farmworkers' perceptions about mental health and apply those in designing and implementing culturally informed policy and practice.

Suicide literacy mediates the path from religiosity to suicide stigma among Muslim community adults: Cross-sectional data from four Arab countries

BACKGROUND

The majority of research attention has been devoted to the link between religiosity and suicide risk, and a considerable amount of studies has been carried out on how stigma impacts individuals with mental health problems of different kinds. However, the interplay between religiosity, suicide literacy and suicide stigma has seldom been empirically researched, especially quantitatively. We sought through this study to redress the imbalance of research attention by examining the relationship between religiosity and suicide stigma; and the indirect and moderating effects of suicide literacy on this relationship.

METHOD

A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted among Arab-Muslim adults originating from four Arab countries (Egypt: N = 1029, Kuwait: N = 2182, Lebanon N = 781, Tunisia N = 2343; Total sample: N = 6335). The outcome measures included the Arabic Religiosity Scale which taps into variation in the degree of religiosity, the Stigma of Suicide Scale-short form to the solicit degree of stigma related to suicide, and the Literacy of Suicide Scale explores knowledge and understanding of suicide.

RESULTS

Our Mediation analyses findings showed that literacy of suicide partially mediated the association between religiosity and stigmatizing attitude toward suicide. Higher religiosity was significantly associated with less literacy of suicide; higher literacy of suicide was significantly associated with less stigma of suicide. Finally, higher religiosity was directly and significantly associated with more stigmatization attitude toward suicide.

CONCLUSION

We contribute the literature by showing, for the first time, that suicide literacy plays a mediating role in the association between religiosity and suicide stigma in a sample of Arab-Muslim community adults. This preliminarily suggests that the effects of religiosity on suicide stigma can be modifiable through improving suicide literacy. This implies that interventions targeting highly religious individuals should pay dual attention to increasing suicide literacy and lowering suicide stigma.

Mental Health Stigma Among Spanish-Speaking Latinos in Baltimore, Maryland

To assess mental health-related stigma in an emerging Latino immigrant community and explore demographic characteristics associated with stigma. We surveyed 367 Spanish-speaking Latino adults recruited at community-based venues in Baltimore, Maryland. The survey included sociodemographic questions, the Depression Knowledge Measure, Personal Stigma Scale, and the Stigma Concerns about Mental Health Care (SCMHC) assessment. Multiple regression models examining associations between personal stigma and stigma concerns about mental health care, respectively, were constructed using variables that were statistically significant in bivariate analyses. Being male, having less than high school education, reporting high importance of religion, and having lower depression knowledge contributed to higher personal stigma. When controlling for other variables, only depression knowledge contributed unique variance to the prediction of higher SCMHC. Efforts to improve access to and quality of mental health care must be paralleled by ongoing efforts to reduce depression stigma within emergent immigrant Latino communities.

Predictors of Stigma toward Alcohol Misuse in Mexico

Objective: This study explored factors associated with public stigma toward individuals misusing alcohol in Mexico. Methods: A randomized experimental vignette methodology was used to assess multiple domains of substance use-related stigma and their relationship to the gender of the vignette subject and the sociodemographic characteristics of respondents. Results: Although levels of stigma toward women who were misusing alcohol did not differ significantly from stigma toward men misusing alcohol, stigma levels and type of stigma reported varied with the sociodemographic characteristics of respondents. Education level, gender, self-stigma and openness to seeking mental health services were differentially associated with the three stigma domains. Conclusions: Accordingly, targeted community based stigma reduction efforts are needed to decrease stigma toward those misusing alcohol, and to support treatment initiation, ongoing treatment engagement and long term recovery efforts. Suggestions for future research on the relationship between substance use and stigma are offered.

A Qualitative Examination of the Impact of Suicidal Thoughts and Behavior on Help-Seeking Among University Students in Colombia and Mexico

This study examined descriptions of suicidal thoughts and behavior (STB) to identify risk and protective factors that may present in clinical settings among university students from Latin America. Our focus was on answering the following key questions: How are suicidal thoughts and behavior described? What are reasons for wanting to die and for living? What impact do STBs have on motivations to seek or avoid psychological treatment? To this end, 55 qualitative interviews were completed with university students from Colombia and Mexico who recently endorsed emotional difficulties in the World Mental Health International College Student (WMH-ICS) surveys. Interviews were coded to identify themes specific to STBs. Findings revealed insight on symptom presentations and consequences of STBs. Participants described uncontrollable somatic symptoms during periods of high suicide risk, which serves as a relevant clinical marker for health providers. An important reason for living was to avoid suffering for family, which was protective against suicide and motivates familial involvement in treatment planning. Participants sought solutions to emotional problems after experiencing STBs, including psychological treatment. Cultural stigma of mental illness induced feelings of shame and burden, which led to avolition, avoidance, and nondisclosure of symptom severity. This study provides insight into the utility of evaluating cultural context in (a) detecting antecedents to STBs frequently reported as somatic symptoms, (b) identifying protective factors against suicide, and (c) recognizing how stigma of mental illness and suicide, shame avoidance, and familism might influence personal motivations to seek or avoid help for emotional distress.

Acceptability of HIV Prevention Approaches Among USA Faith-Based Leaders

HIV/AIDS disproportionately impacts underserved communities in the USA. This study evaluated the acceptability of partnering with faith communities to improve HIV prevention, screening, and engagement in care with a focus on Hispanic/Latinx (H/L) communities. We engaged faith-based leaders to identify how the cultural competence and foundations of trust within these communities may be leveraged to improve HIV-related healthcare access for underserved groups including H/L individuals. Using a semi-structured qualitative interview approach, we interviewed N = 20 faith-based leaders in Providence County, Rhode Island (RI). Data were analyzed using the framework approach which utilized inductive generation of themes and systematic grouping into predetermined categories. Seven of the 20 interviewees self-identified as H/L faith leaders and discussed needs specific to H/L communities including destigmatization of HIV, increased access to care, and partnerships founded on mutual respect. The other 13 faith leaders did not personally identify as H/L but all served communities with significant H/L populations. We included these individuals given their communities already performed HIV and/or other health outreach and could provide insight into what approaches could be adapted to the needs expressed by H/L leaders. All interviewees were accepting of developing partnerships with outside organizations to engage in HIV prevention, and all identified potential solutions to identified barriers. Results suggested that faith-based outreach should be further investigated as a method of improving HIV prevention in the general and H/L populations.

Public Stigma Toward Schizophrenia Within Latino Communities in the United States

Public stigma toward those experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia in the general population is high; yet research into such stigma within the diverse Latino communities remains under-investigated. This study employed a randomized experimental vignette methodology to assess various domains of public stigma toward individuals experiencing psychosis and/or diabetes within Latino communities. A communitybased sample of 243 Latino adults participated. Contrary to our expectations, respondents who were more sympathetic toward those with mental health problems tended to score higher on public stigma. The belief that a person was responsible for their own mental health problems was associated with higher levels of stigma. Results indicate that perceptions of dangerousness toward someone experiencing psychosis were common, and the perception that a person was responsible for their mental health problems was associated with higher levels of stigma Results emphasize the complex nature of stigma within the diverse Latino communities and the need for ongoing research.

COVID-19 Pandemic Response Preparedness and Risk Perceptions Among Peruvian Veterinarians and Animal Care Workers

Peruvian veterinarians and animal care workers (VACW) are primary responders in the event of disasters or emergencies, yet they face unique concerns that could impede or block their essential functions in public health preparedness in comparison with VACWs in other countries. In this study, we used the Ready, Willing, and Able model via electronic survey to evaluate the perception of risks and barriers that Peruvian VACWs faced when deciding whether to continue working during the COVID-19 pandemic between July and December 2020. We used logistic regression models to evaluate associations between demographic characteristics, perceived role, and contact scores with 8 outcomes: knowledge of COVID-19; confidence in safety protocols; perceived threat; perceived job efficacy; perceived barriers; and readiness, willingness, and ability to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Less than 50% of respondents reported barriers to report to work during the pandemic. Respondents who reported higher contact with coworkers had an increased confidence in safety protocols (OR 5.16; 95% CI, 1.36 to 19.61) and willingness (OR 3.76; 95% CI, 1.14 to 12.47) to respond to the pandemic. Close contacts with essential workers and higher economic income were associated with higher reported knowledge of COVID-19. Respondents with higher perceived job efficacy had higher odds of reporting being ready, willing, and able to respond to COVID-19, while those who identified more barriers to report to work had lower odds of being ready, willing, and able to respond. The findings from this study, which showed differences from VACWs in the United States, can be used by individuals designing programs to improve pandemic and disaster preparedness in this essential, yet understudied and vulnerable, workforce.

Trusting in God: Religious and Spiritual Support in Mental Health Treatment Expectations in Mexico

Religious and spiritual practices have been identified as a main source of mental health support for Latinxs to improve overall health and well-being. This qualitative secondary data analysis sought to elucidate how Mexican patients and family members engaged in religious and spiritual practices to help alleviate patients' experiences of mental illness. Three main findings are discussed: (1) positive religious coping such as entrusting God with one's suffering, consejos (i.e., emotional support and advice giving), and positive social supports through religious communities; (2) negative religious coping such as harmful views of God as punishing; and (3) indigenous healing practices such as engagement with curanderos (medicine doctor) and limpias (i.e., herb-based cleanses). The authors discuss these findings in the context of tensions between culturally sanctioned healing and the perception of psychotherapeutic effectiveness reported by Mexican patients and their family members. The authors also provide future directions for incorporating patients' religious and spiritual practices into multiculturally competent treatment.

Anxiety, Depression, and Behavioral and/or Conduct Disorder in Adolescence Among Former Preterm and Term Infants of Different Race and Ethnicities

OBJECTIVE

To compare parental reports of recent diagnoses of anxiety, depression, and/or behavioral/conduct disorder among former preterm (PT) and term adolescents by race/ethnicity and evaluate receipt of mental healthcare within the past year among those adolescents with any of these conditions.

STUDY DESIGN

A total of 20,871 Non-Hispanic white (NHW), Non-Hispanic black (NHB), and Hispanic adolescents were evaluated using data from the 2017/2018 National Survey of Children's Health. PT birth and race/ethnicity disparity in the diagnosis of these emotional/behavioral problems and receipt of mental healthcare among adolescents with any of these diagnoses were analyzed using logistic regression.

RESULTS

The unadjusted prevalence (95% CI) of these diagnoses was significantly higher among former PT (0.19 [0.17-0.22]) compared to term (0.15 [0.14-0.16]) adolescents. Despite having higher rates of adverse socioeconomic measures, former PT and term NHBs and Hispanics had lower unadjusted prevalence of these diagnoses in comparison to NHWs. After adjusting for differences in demographic, clinical, and socioeconomic characteristics, NHBs (0.47 [0.36-0.64]) and Hispanics (0.40 [0.30-0.54]) remain at lower odds of the composite measure of the emotional and/or behavioral problems compared to NHWs, while PT birth did not have a significant impact on this outcome measure. Only 53% of adolescents with these diagnoses received recent mental healthcare. No significant differences in the adjusted odds of receipt of mental healthcare were noted across the groups based on PT birth or race/ethnicity.

CONCLUSIONS

In contrast to PT birth, race/ethnicity had a significant impact on the adjusted odds of emotional/behavioral disorders during adolescence. Among adolescents with these diagnoses, PT birth and race/ethnicity did not significantly influence the adjusted odds of receipt of mental healthcare.

The psychosocial challenges associated with gestational diabetes mellitus: A systematic review of qualitative studies

BACKGROUND

Gestational diabetes is a disease with complex management that requires multidisciplinary collaboration. To achieve treatment goals, in addition to using medications and paying attention to exercise and diet, it is also important to take into account the mental health and psychosocial aspects of diabetes management. This study aimed to highlight these challenges associated with gestational diabetes.

METHOD

This qualitative systematic review involved a search of the following databases: CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO. Title, abstract, and full-text screening was done using Covidence software, and quality assessment of the included papers was conducted using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme Checklist. Enhancing transparency in reporting the synthesis of the qualitative research statement (ENTREQ) was used in the design of this paper. Data synthesis was done using meta-aggregation method.

RESULTS

Out of the 2440 articles searched, 24 were qualitatively analyzed. The CASP score of the included papers was optimal. The 514 findings extracted from the 24 studies were aggregated into five broad conceptual categories: psychological challenges, socio-cultural challenges, information-communication challenges, challenges associated with a lifestyle change, and challenges related to health care.

CONCLUSION

Recognizing the psychosocial challenges associated with gestational diabetes and developing support packages tailored to psychosocial needs can help improve the management of these patients.

Caregiver Perceptions of Mental Health and Barriers to and Facilitators of Their Child's Treatment

OBJECTIVES

Nearly 1 million children visit emergency departments (EDs) annually for mental health crises. Caregivers play a critical role in the outcome of mental illness in their children, yet there is limited research on effective means to engage caregivers in the ED and provide the support they need. Our aim was to determine caregivers' perceptions about mental illness in their children, specifically regarding suicidality and depression, the impact of the children's mental health on the caregiver, and barriers to and facilitators of treatment.

METHODS

Guided by qualitative descriptive methodology, we conducted semistructured, open-ended interviews with a purposive sample of English-speaking primary caregivers of children 6 to 17 years old who presented with suicidal ideations or behaviors to 1 urban pediatric ED. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim, and conventional content analysis was performed.

RESULTS

The participants (n = 20) were largely single ethnic-racial minority mothers. Content analysis identified 6 categories: caregivers' definitions of mental health, depression, and suicidality; perceived causes of mental illness; difficulty in identification of mental illness; the influence of the mental illness on caregivers; a complex network of communication among involved parties that resulted in the child's ED visit, as well as barriers to and facilitators of treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

We identified several categories that encapsulate caregivers' perceptions of mental health and mental illness in their children and its effect on them. Future research should explore how inner-city EDs might partner with schools and trusted community-based organizations to enhance caregiver knowledge, reduce obstacles to care, increase screening for at-risk youth and implement strategies to optimize outcomes for children with depression and suicidal ideations.

Rural Hispanic Perceptions of Mental Health: A Qualitative Study

INTRODUCTION

In 2020, 18.4% of Hispanics experienced mental illness, yet only about a third received treatment compared with nearly half of non-Hispanic Whites. In Montana, where only 11% of the mental health needs are currently met, service utilization is low. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of the Hispanic immigrant population in a rural state on mental health and professional service utilization.

METHODS

Using a descriptive phenomenological approach, we conducted semi-structured telephone interviews in Spanish. Audio recordings were transcribed, translated to English, and analyzed for themes.

RESULTS

We recruited a sample of 14 participants from Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela ranging in age from 33 to 59. We identified five themes: definitions of mental health, maintaining mental health, familismo/socialization, stigma, and acculturation stress.

DISCUSSION

Novel findings point to the need for Spanish-language services focused on reducing stigma around mental illness and incorporating the importance of social connections.

Predictors of stigma toward alcohol misuse in Latino communities: a path model

This study explores stigma-related beliefs within the Latino community concerning alcohol misuse. A community-based convenience sample of 251 self-identified Latino adults were recruited to participate in a research study using an experimental vignette methodology. Participants were randomly assigned one of four vignettes about alcohol misuse and asked to share their attitudes and stigma-related beliefs about the problem and the person in the vignette. Sociodemographic characteristics of participants differentially predicted alcohol-related stigma. These data may be used to inform health literacy and stigma reduction interventions within the Latino community.

Espiritismo and Santeria: a gateway to child mental health services among Puerto Rican families?

BACKGROUND

Barriers to mental health care access among Latinx children contribute to mental health disparities. It is unclear whether traditional spiritual guides in Latinx communities may function more as gateway providers or in some instances as deterrents to mental health treatment. This study assesses whether family involvement in Espiritismo and/or Santeria, two forefront non-Christian spiritual traditions among Latinx families, is associated with mental health care utilization among Puerto Rican children in two contexts.

METHODS

Data are from Waves 1-3 (2000-2004) of the Boricua Youth Study, a population-based longitudinal cohort study of Puerto Rican children from San Juan and Caguas, Puerto Rico (PR), and the South Bronx, New York (SBx), 5 to 17 years of age (N = 2491).

RESULTS

At baseline, 5.02% (n = 58) of the families reported involvement with Espiritismo and/or Santeria in the SBx and 3.64% (n = 52) in PR. Logistic regression models predicting mental health service use found, after adjusting for multiple risk and protective factors, that families involved with Espiritismo and/or Santeria were 2.41 times more likely (p = 0.0034) to use mental health services over the course of 3 years than children with no family involvement in these practices in the SBx. The same association was not found in PR.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings among PR families in the SBx lend support to the gateway provider model in which spiritual guides open doors to mental health treatment. Forming community connections between mental health providers and traditional spiritual groups may be a culturally considerate, fruitful approach to reducing barriers to mental health treatment among Latinx families.

Hispanic Child Suicides in the United States, 2010-2019

Suicides in Hispanic adolescents have been increasing significantly. Less clear is the extent of suicides in Hispanic children younger than 12 years of age. The purpose of this study was to explore the trends and methods of suicides in Hispanic children from 2010 to 2019 (latest data available across the United States). Suicide is the 7th leading cause of death for Hispanic children. Hispanic child suicides statistically significantly increased during the decade. From 2010 to 2019, Hispanic child suicide rates increased by 92.3%. The suicide deaths were primarily in boys (59.6%) and among those 10-12 years of age (94.9%). Hispanic child suicides were most common in the West and South and least common in the Northeastern US The method used to commit suicide was overwhelmingly (76-85%) hanging/strangulation/suffocation. To help assure Hispanic children flourish and mature into healthy adults, it is essential that policymakers commit more resources for access to healthcare for all youths and that research funding for minorities include research regarding Hispanic children's suicide risk factors, protective factors, and effective interventions to reduce suicides of Hispanic children.

Suicides Among Non-Elderly Adult Hispanics, 2010-2020

Most research on suicides focuses on youth or the elderly and dominant groups of a population. The purpose of this study was to assess suicide trends for non-elderly adult Hispanics (age 20-64 years) over the past decade (2010-2020). Data from the Web-Based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (WISQARS) were analyzed for the study period. Suicides for Hispanics in 2010 were the 7th leading cause of death and became the 5th leading cause of death by 2020. During the decade of analyses, suicide rates increased 35.7% for males and 40.6% for females. Non-elderly Hispanic males were most likely to die by hanging/suffocation (2010 = 42%, 2020 = 41%), or firearms (2010 = 39%, 2020 = 42%). Whereas, Hispanic adult females were most likely to use hanging/suffocation (2010 = 36%, 2020 = 43%) or poisoning (2010 = 27%, 2020 = 19%) for completed suicides. In 2020, the top three states for non-elderly Hispanic adult suicides (per 100,000 population) were Colorado (25.52), New Mexico (23.99), and Utah (21.73). The Hispanic population continues to grow, but also faces chronicity of prejudice, underemployment, lack of healthcare access, multiple stressors, and rising levels of suicide. The reduction of adult Hispanic suicides would require additional resources, interventions, and research to understand prevention and risk factors.

Parental Perceptions of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Latinx and Black Sociocultural Contexts: A Systematic Review

Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face challenges in accessing diagnostic and treatment services; these challenges vary by race, ethnicity, and culture. This systematic review examines parental perceptions of ASD within Latinx and Black American communities. Findings indicate that interconnections with family and religious groups promoted positive coping and describe positive impacts of having a child with ASD. Relative to White families, community members reported reduced access to information and more inaccurate beliefs about ASD, higher levels of ASD-related stigma, and more negative experiences with healthcare providers, which serve to exacerbate healthcare disparities. Conclusions are limited by an underrepresentation of minority groups in research. We call for efforts to address the specific needs of racial and ethnic minorities.

Hospitality Towards People with Mental Illness in the Church: a Cross-cultural Qualitative Study

Mental illness is a prevalent concern that affects Christian churches in North America in significant ways. Previous studies on the relationship between mental illness and the church have found that beliefs and practices within the church can contribute to stigma towards people with mental illness. Yet, the typical experience of people with mental illness who attend church has been found to be positive, suggesting that there are considerable resources within the church for supporting those who experience mental health problems. One such resource is the concept of hospitality, which promotes a sense of belonging for those with mental illness in the church. This qualitative study advances the construct of hospitality as a helpful paradigm for addressing mental health needs within the church, capturing perspectives and practices that are currently in place or seen as necessary by church attendees. The study methodology also emphasized the need to incorporate cultural considerations that are appropriate for the racial and ethnic make-up of particular churches. Semistructured focus group interviews were conducted with participants from eight churches that were either predominantly African American, Asian American, Latinx, or multi-ethnic. Findings resulting from content analysis of transcripts indicated that hospitality was a broadly helpful construct for addressing mental health concerns in the church, though some cultural differences existed in the understanding and application of hospitality. Both the interface of the findings with the existing scholarly literature and the relevance of findings for church leaders are discussed.

Latino Immigrant Service Provision in Tennessee and Georgia: Provider Perceptions

Latinos and Latino immigrants are increasingly settling in new immigrant destinations, such as Tennessee and Georgia, that have historically lacked sufficient infrastructure for delivery of culturally and linguistically competent health and social services. This cross-sectional survey study was designed to assess providers' (n = 109) perspectives of the service provision landscape in each state. Descriptive analyses and t-tests (by state) were conducted to explore service concerns, access barriers, and organizational capacity to address concerns and barriers. Among most prevalently reported concerns were income/wages and fear of deportation. Key access barriers included language, lack of driver's license and insurance, and fear of deportation. Most (63%) organizations had sufficient Spanish language proficiency, though building trust was a notable barrier within 58% of organizations. Results provide meaningful data to inform existing strengths and service gaps in two exclusionary policy states. Future research should include perspectives of Latino community members.

Identifying community needs of the Hispanic faith community to develop a research agenda

Objective

To conduct a community health needs assessment among the Hispanic faith community population to develop a community‐partnered research agenda.

Design

A cross‐sectional design was used to conduct a community needs assessment using a community‐based participatory research approach

Sample

Hispanic faith community members in Central Arkansas.

Measurement

Data collection was led by Hispanic faith leaders using an audience response system at places of worship. An 88‐item Community Health Needs Assessment survey was used that included demographic questions and questions related to five domains including community concerns, community resources, healthcare access, health concerns, and hunger and nutrition.

Results

There were a total of 100 participants in the community needs assessment. Hunger and nutrition was the highest ranking community concern followed by healthcare access.

Conclusion

Based upon the results of the study, the university researchers and Hispanic faith community members have begun the initial steps to developing a research agenda to address the major concerns of the community.

Characterizing Health Literacy Among Spanish Language-Preferring Latinos Ages 50-75

BACKGROUND

Cultural background, language, and literacy are factors that may affect access, healthcare utilization, and cancer screening behaviors.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to characterize health literacy among Spanish-preferring Hispanic/Latino individuals ages 50-75 and examine associations between sociodemographic characteristics, health beliefs, and health literacy.

METHODS

Participants self-identified as Hispanic/Latino, preferring health information in Spanish, were ages 50-75 years old, at average risk for colorectal cancer (CRC), not up to date with CRC screening, and enrolled in a CRC screening education intervention trial. Sociodemographic characteristics, health beliefs, and health literacy (i.e., difficulty understanding written health information and confidence completing health forms) were assessed at baseline. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were performed.

RESULTS

Fifty-three percent of participants reported either sometimes having difficulty or always having difficulty with written health information, and 25% reported always asking for help or being not so confident in completing health forms. Univariate predictors of adequate health literacy for written health information were lower cancer worry and lower religious beliefs. Higher educational attainment predicted confidence in completing health forms.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings highlight the need for interventions that address health beliefs and health literacy among Hispanic/Latino patients who have low confidence in completing written forms and difficulty understanding written information and reinforce the use of plain language and salient design features when developing patient education materials.

Shared Cultural Values Influence Mental Health Help-Seeking Behaviors in Asian and Latinx College Students

The current study sought to understand the influence of cultural values on mental health attitudes and help-seeking behaviors in college students of diverse ethnic backgrounds. Asian and Latinx college students (N = 159) completed an online survey in which they reported on their adherence to cultural values as measured by ethnicity-specific cultural values and general attitudes towards mental health. Factor analysis revealed two common factors of cultural values irrespective of ethnicity: Interdependent Orientation (IO) and Cultural Obligation (CO). Regardless of ethnicity, the more students endorsed IO values, the less likely they were to perceive a need for mental health treatment. IO value adherence was also predictive of more negative attitudes towards mental health. CO values were not predictive of perceived need or help-seeking behaviors. Findings highlight the importance of understanding shared cultural values across ethnic-racial groups and considering how the multidimensionality of culture may help explain shared mental health behaviors crossing lines of ethnic group membership.

Coronavirus Awareness and Mental Health: Clinical Symptoms and Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help

The current study analyzed the relationship between Coronavirus (COVID-19) Awareness, mental health, and willingness to seek professional psychological help. This was made through a quantitative approach, using online questionnaires to collect data from 855 subjects. The questionnaires included the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-53) to measure mental health indicators, the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale-Short Form, and the Coronavirus Awareness Scale-10 (CAS-10). An Exploratory Factor Analysis suggests that three factors underlie the CAS-10: Coronavirus Concern, Exaggerated Perception, and Immunity Perception. Results indicate a significant positive correlation between Coronavirus Concern and both general anxiety and phobic anxiety symptoms. Immunity Perception is positively related to paranoid ideation and psychotic symptoms. A Mediation Analysis determined that Coronavirus Concern has a significant positive direct effect on Openness to Seeking Psychological Treatment (OSPT), while Exaggerated Perception and Immunity Perception scores have significant direct negative effects on the Value and Need in Seeking Treatment (VNST) scores. Indirectly, the relationship between Coronavirus Concern and OPST is significantly mediated by anxiety symptoms. Similar results were found for the VNST subscale. There is a negative significant effect of Immunity Perception over OSPT mediated by Paranoid Ideation. However, the overall model only achieved small r 2 coefficients for the OSPT (0.060) and VNST (0.095) scores. Comparisons in Coronavirus Awareness between sex, age, and the presence of children and older adults at home were also made. These results are discussed regarding their practical implications for mental health providers and policymakers.

Depressive Symptoms Among Hispanic Adolescents and Effect on Neonatal Outcomes

INTRODUCTION

Hispanics have the highest birth rate among adolescents and may be vulnerable to experience depression. The purpose of this study was to explore the prevalence of perinatal depression and effects upon neonatal outcomes among Hispanic adolescents 13-19 years old.

METHODS

Available data from a previously conducted study examining the prevalence of adolescent depression and post-traumatic stress were used for the current secondary analysis. Perinatal data reflected a rating of prenatal depression and scores from the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS). Adverse infant outcomes included preterm birth, low birth weight, and neonatal complications.

RESULTS

Over 20% of adolescents reported an adverse infant outcome. About one third of adolescents reported perinatal depression: prenatally (14%) and postnatally (14% minor depression/12.7% major depression). Significant associations were found between EPDS scores, gestational age, and feelings during pregnancy; however, perinatal depression was not found to predict adverse infant outcomes.

CONCLUSION

Prenatally depressed adolescents are vulnerable to postpartum depression and if experience an adverse infant outcome, postpartum depression may be more likely reported. Therefore, prenatal- and afterbirth-focused assessments and care, including plans for follow-up, are essential.

Social Support and Religiosity as Contributing Factors to Resilience and Mental Wellbeing in Latino Immigrants: A Community-Based Participatory Research Study

Latino immigrants are at increased risk for mental disorders due to social/economic disadvantages and stressful conditions associated with migration. Resilience-the ability to recover from stress-may provide protection given its association with lower rates of anxiety and depression. This study examines the relationship between protective factors, resilience, and psychological distress in Latino immigrants. A community-based participatory research study conducted with a Latino agency using in-person surveys to obtain the following data: Brief Resilience Scale, Brief Symptom Inventory, Duke University Religion Index, Multi-group Ethnic Identity measure, and the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List. Linear regression, and mediation analysis was performed using SPSS. There are 128 participants. Resilience was positively related to social support (p = 0.001) and religiosity (p = 0.006); inversely related to psychological distress (p = 0.001); and mediated the relationship between the two (p = 0.006). Promoting social support and religion in Latino communities can improve wellbeing by increasing resilience and reducing distress.

Stigma of mental illness and cultural factors in Pacific Rim region: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Although cultural factors play a crucial role in experience of stigma, there is scant review on the impact and importance of culture on stigma of mental illness across Pacific Rim Region. This study aims to investigate: 1) the cultural factors related to stigmatizing beliefs about mental illness in Pacific Rim region, and 2) culture-specific measures and interventions on stigma of mental illness.

METHODS

A systematic search of papers was conducted in the MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Google scholar through January 2003 to April 2019.

RESULTS

Forty-one studies in Pacific Rim region which met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The rate of stigma of mental illness (e.g., public stigma: from 25.4 to 85.2%) was relatively high in Pacific Rim region. Culture factors (e.g., Collectivism, Confucianism, face concern and familism, religion and supernatural beliefs) contributed to people's stigmatizing behaviors and attitudes toward persons with mental illness, their relatives and mental health professionals. Certain measurements were developed and employed to assess different type of cultural factors related to stigma of mental illness.

CONCLUSIONS

Cultural factors play an important role in influencing the rate and performance of stigma of mental illness. Further research on stigma of mental illness and culture-specific interventions to reduce the stigma should be conducted in the Pacific Rim region.

Depression and Gender Roles among Hispanic Immigrant Women: Examining Associations of Gender Egalitarianism, Marianismo, and Self-Silencing

Background

Efforts in the prevention and treatment of depression among Hispanic immigrant women require studies to identify modifiable factors of depression. Some factors that may merit investigation are gender roles such as egalitarian gender attitudes, marianismo, and self-silencing.

Methods

This cross-sectional study included 231 Hispanic immigrant women living in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Logistic regression was used to examine associations of covariates, egalitarian gender attitudes, marianismo, and self-silencing in relation to depression.

Results

Egalitarian gender attitudes were not associated with depression. For marianismo domains, higher scores on the spiritual pillar scale were associated with lower odds of depression. With regard to self-silencing, higher scores on externalizing self-perception and divided self were associated with higher odds of depression.

Conclusions

Findings add to the limited literature on depression among Hispanic immigrants and provides some insight on sociocultural factors that may be considered in depression interventions for Hispanic immigrant women.

Challenges to community transitions through Money Follows the Person

OBJECTIVE

To examine the effects of transition challenges on the success and timeliness of transitions from institutions to community living for long-stay participants in the Money Follows the Person (MFP) Rebalancing Demonstration and determine whether outcomes vary by age and disability.

DATA SOURCE

Secondary data on transition challenges for individuals enrolled in Connecticut's MFP program between December 2008 and December 2017.

STUDY DESIGN

Challenges were analyzed for older adults, people with mental health disability, and people with physical disability. Bivariate and multivariate analyses investigated which transition challenges and selected demographic variables predict transition versus closure and length of transition period for each group.

DATA EXTRACTION METHODS

The sample includes 3506 persons who attempted transition from institutions to community living and whose case concluded with transition or closure from 2015 to 2017.

PRINCIPAL FINDINGS

The association between most transition challenges and the ability of long-stay institutional residents to return to the community, and to do so in a timely manner, varies significantly among older adults and younger persons with physical or mental health disabilities. For all groups, however, consumer engagement challenges predicted closure without transition (OR: 1.3-3.9) and housing challenges predicted longer transition periods (84-132 days). Length of institutional stay was associated with both outcomes for older adults and persons with physical disability. Other challenges, such as issues with services and supports, differed among the three groups on both outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

Knowledge of the effects of transition challenges on success and timeliness of transition for each group allows program managers and health and service providers to focus resources on addressing the most serious challenges. Particular emphasis should be placed on consumer engagement and housing challenges, and on targeting persons for transition early in their institutional stay. Federal and state transition programs can benefit by individualizing supports for residents to yield successful outcomes.

Treatment challenges and support needs of underserved Hispanic patients diagnosed with lung cancer and head-and-neck cancer

Purpose: We explored the treatment challenges and support needs that Hispanic underserved lung cancer and head-and-neck cancer patients face while undergoing cancer treatment.Design: Qualitative design - ethnography.Sample: Using a sample of 29 participants, we conducted semi-structured interviews with nine lung cancer and head-and-neck cancer survivors and seven health care providers and focus group interviews with six caregivers and seven patient navigators.Method: Relevant themes were extracted with Ethnographic content analysis.Findings: Participants reported treatment challenges and support needs in four areas: medical, financial, socio-cultural, and mental health. Health care providers and navigators primarily identified medical and financial challenges that impact treatment adherence, while patients and caregivers expressed the need for support for mental health problems (i.e., depression, anxiety).Implications for psychosocial providers: Understanding the experiences of underserved Hispanic cancer survivors can aid in creating psychosocial interventions that successfully target treatment-related challenges and provide them with the support they need.

Do religious patients need religious psychotherapists? A naturalistic treatment matching study among orthodox Jews

Religion is professed by the majority of the general population, but a minority of mental health practitioners. We evaluated whether religious patients benefited more from treatment with religious psychotherapists in a naturalistic study among adult Orthodox Jewish (n = 117) and control patients (n = 91) receiving psychotherapy from Orthodox Jewish (n = 15) and other (n = 7) psychotherapists at a New York based outpatient clinic. Groups did not differ with respect to diagnoses (χ²(200) = 7.5, p = .76), likelihood of having an Orthodox Jewish therapist (χ²(200) = .06, p = .81), or number of therapy sessions (t(206) = .73, p =  .47). Multilevel regression modeling revealed that Orthodox patients reported lower initial anxiety (t(198) = 3.71, p < .001, d = .54) and depression (t(198) = 3.71, p < .001, d = .54, d = .50), but were equivalent to controls at termination (Anxiety t(189) = .36, p =  .72; Depression t(182) = 1.00, p =  .32). Interactions between patient and therapist religious affiliations were not significant. These results suggest that religious (and non-religious) patients may benefit equally from treatment delivered by religious and non-religious therapists.

Community Engagement and Planning versus Resources for Services for Implementing Depression Quality Improvement: Exploratory Analysis for Black and Latino Adults

Objective

Racial/ethnic minorities experience disparities in depression1 and there is a paucity of evidence-based interventions to improve depression care access and outcomes. Community Partners in Care (CPIC) is a community-partnered study of depression care quality improvement (QI) in under-resourced, urban communities: Community Engagement and Planning (CEP) for multi-sector coalitions, and Resources for Services (RS) for program technical assistance.2 CEP demonstrated benefits for the overall CPIC study population; effects for Black and Latino sub-populations are unknown.

Methods

This sub-analysis examines outcomes for 409 Latino and 488 Black (non-Latino) adults recruited from 90 programs who completed baseline or 6-month follow-up. Regression analyses were used to estimate CEP vs RS intervention effects on primary (Mental Health Related Quality of Life [MHRQL], Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9]) and community-prioritized (mental wellness, physical activity, risk for homelessness) outcomes at 6-months.

Results

Baseline characteristics did not differ significantly by intervention in either group. In the adjusted analysis for Black adults, CEP resulted in decreased odds of poor MHRQL (OR: .62, 95% CI=.41-.94, P=.028) with a trend for reducing homelessness risk (OR: .60, .35-1.05, P=.69). For Latino adults, CEP resulted in greater probability of mental wellness (OR: 1.81, 1.05-3.13, P=.034) and a trend for increased physical activity (OR: 1.52, .93-2.49, P=.091).

Conclusions

Exploratory analyses of CEP for depression quality improvement suggests significant 6-month benefits in mental health outcomes for Black and Latino participants and trends for improvement in community-prioritized outcomes for both groups. Findings may inform research in multi-sector coalitions to promote equity in depression care.
