Abstract
Bisphenol A has become a global public health problem. As an antioxidant, geraniol has potential preventive effects against toxicity. This study analyzes the preventive effect of geraniol against BPA induced liver injury in CD-1 mice. Geraniol administration significantly ameliorated BPA induced liver damage by the increase in superoxide dismutase/catalase enzymatic activities, and decrease in malonaldehyde level; prompted a significant reduction in the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), and pyroptosis biomarkers (NLRP3, ASC, and caspase-1); up-regulated the expression of claudin-1, ZO-1, and occludin markedly, which exhibited intestinal barrier function. Also, geraniol treatment optimized the composition and diversity of gut microbiota. It may be summarized that geraniol showed protective effects on liver injury induced by BPA and further revealed that the mechanism might be located on improving intestinal physical barrier function, down-regulating pyroptosis biomarkers, and normalizing intestinal microbiota, consequently reducing inflammatory response in the liver.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endemic fluorosis refers to the condition when individuals are exposed to excessive amounts of fluoride ion due to living in a region characterized by elevated levels of fluorine in the drinking water, food, and/or air. In Pakistan, a substantial proportion of the population is thereby affected, posing a public health concern. OBJECTIVES Assessing how the gut microbiota and its metabolic profiles are impacted by chronic exposure to fluoride in drinking water (that caused Dental Fluorosis) as well as to perceive how this microbiota is connected to adverse health outcomes prevailing with fluoride exposure. METHODS Drinking water (n=27) and biological samples (n=100) of blood, urine and feces were collected from 70 high fluoride exposed (with Dental Fluorosis) and 30 healthy control (without Dental Fluorosis) subjects. Water and urinary fluoride concentrations were determined. Serum/plasma biochemical testing was performed. Fecal DNA extraction, 16S rRNA analysis of microbial taxa, their predicted metabolic function and fecal short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) quantification were carried out. RESULTS The study revealed that microbiota taxonomic shifts and their metabolic characterization had been linked to certain host clinical parameters under the chronic fluoride exposure. Some sets of genera showed strong specificity to water and urine fluoride concentrations, Relative Fat Mass index and SCFAs. The SCFAs response in fluoride-exposed samples was observed to be correlated with bacterial taxa that could contribute to adverse health effects. CONCLUSIONS Microbial dysbiosis as a result of endemic fluorosis exhibits a structure that is associated with risk of metabolic deregulation and is implicated in various diseases. Our results may form the development of novel interventions and may have utility in diagnosis and monitoring.

Abstract
The composition of gut microbiota, including butyrate-producing bacteria (BPB), is influenced by diet and physiological conditions. As such, given the importance of butyrate as an energetic substrate in colonocytes, it is unclear whether utilization of this substrate by the host would enhance BPB levels, thus defining a host-microbiome mutualistic relationship based on cellular metabolism. Here, it is shown through using a mouse model that lacks short-chain acyl dehydrogenase (SCAD), which is the first enzyme in the beta-oxidation pathway for short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), that there is a significant diminishment in BPB at the phylum, class, species, and genus level compared to mice that have SCAD. Furthermore, SCAD-deficient mice do not show a prebiotic response from dietary fiber. Thus, oxidation of SCFAs by the host, which includes butyrate, is important in promoting BPB. These data help define the functional importance of diet-microbiome-host interactions toward microbiome composition, as it relates to function.

Abstract
Inflammation significantly influences the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson's disease (PD), which is potentially intensified by associated gut dysbiosis. The therapeutic potential of probiotics, due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and gut microbiota modulatory properties, is explored herein as a means to improve gut health and influence the gut-brain-microbiota axis in the context of PD. In this study, we investigated the role and possible mechanism of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis MH-022 (B. lactis MH-022) supplementation in a 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced rat model of PD. Findings demonstrated that B. lactis MH-022 supplementation markedly ameliorated motor deficits, preserved dopaminergic neurons, enhanced the antioxidant capacity, and mitigated inflammation through restoring mitochondrial function. Furthermore, B. lactis MH-022 supplementation significantly altered the gut microbiota composition, augmenting the production of short-chain fatty acids and promoting the proliferation of beneficial bacterial taxa, thereby reinforcing their anti-inflammatory properties. Correlation analyses established strong associations between specific bacterial taxa and improvements in motor function, antioxidant levels, and reductions in inflammation markers. These insights emphasize the therapeutic potential of B. lactis MH-022 in modulating diverse aspects of PD, particularly highlighting its role in reducing inflammation, restoring mitochondrial function, enhancing antioxidant capacity, and reshaping the gut microbiota. This multifaceted approach underscores the probiotic's potential in reducing neuroinflammation and protecting dopaminergic neurons, thus offering a promising avenue for PD treatment.

Abstract
Amphibians face the threat of decline and extinction, and their health is crucially affected by the microbiota. Their health and ecological adaptability essentially depend on the diverse microbial communities that are shaped by unique host traits and environmental factors. However, there is still limited research on this topic. In this study, cutaneous (C) and gut (G) microbiota in Rana amurensis (A) and R. dybowskii (D) was analyzed through 16S amplicon sequencing. Groups AC and DC significantly differed in alpha diversity, while the gut groups (AG and DG) showed no such differences. Analyses of Bray-Curtis dissimilarity matrix and unweighted UniFrac distances showed significant differences in cutaneous microbiota between groups AC and DC, but not between groups AG and DG. Stochastic processes significantly influenced the assembly of cutaneous and gut microbiota in amphibians, with a notably higher species dispersal rate in the gut. The predominant phyla in the skin of R. amurensis and R. dybowskii were Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria, respectively, with significant variations in Bacteroidota. Contrarily, the gut microbiota of both species was dominated by Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes, without significant phylum-level differences. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) analysis identified distinct microbial enrichment in each group. Predictive analysis using phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states 2 (PICRUSt2) revealed the significant functional pathways associated with the microbiota, which indicates their potential roles in immune system function, development, regeneration, and response to infectious diseases. This research underscores the critical impact of both host and environmental factors in shaping amphibian microbial ecosystems and emphasizes the need for further studies to explore these complex interactions for conservation efforts.

Abstract
The cluster of genes determining the production of botulinum toxins is an attribute of not only the Clostridium botulinum species. This cluster is also found in other members of the Clostridium genus, such as C. baratii, C. butyricum, and C. sporogenes. The occurrence of a botulinum-like cluster has also been recorded in strains of other genera, i.e., Enterococcus faecium, as well as in a Gram-negative species isolated from freshwater sediments; however, the biological activity of bont-related genes has not been noted. It can be said that the mentioned species have a dual nature. Another species with a dual nature is C. butyricum. This bacterium is a common human and animal gut commensal bacterium and is also frequently found in the environment. Although non-toxigenic strains are currently used as probiotics in Asia, other strains have been implicated in pathological conditions, such as botulism in infants or necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm neonates. Additionally, C. baratii strains are rare opportunistic pathogens associated with botulism intoxication. They have been isolated from food and soil and can be carried asymptomatically or cause botulism outbreaks in animals and humans. In addition to the mentioned clostridia, the other microorganisms considered as non-toxigenic have also been suspected of carrying botulinum cluster Gram-negative bacteria, such as Chryseobacterium piperi isolated from freshwater sediments; however, the biological activity of bont-related genes has not been noted. Additionally, Enterococcus faecium strains have been discovered carrying BoNT-related clusters (BoNT/En). Literature data regarding the heterogeneity of BoNT-producing strains indicate the requirement to reclassify C. botulinum species and other microorganisms able to produce BoNTs or possess botulinum-like gene clusters. This article aims to show the dual nature of Clostridium strains not belonging to the C. botulinum species that are sporadically able to carry bont clusters, which are usually considered saprophytic and even probiotic, and bont-like clusters in microorganisms from other genera. The aim was also to consider the genetic mechanisms of botulinum cluster expression in strains that are considered opportunistic and the microbiological safety aspects associated with their occurrence in the environment.

Abstract
Proteins involved in antibiotic resistance (resistome) and with antimicrobial activity are present in biological specimens. This study aims to explore the presence and abundance of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and resistome proteins in bovine milk from diverse breeds and from intensive (Pezzata rossa, Bruna alpina, and Frisona) and non-intensive farming (Podolica breeds). Liquid atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (LAP-MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) profiling, bottom-up proteomics, and metaproteomics were used to comprehensively analyze milk samples from various bovine breeds in order to identify and characterize AMPs and to investigate resistome proteins. LAP-MALDI MS coupled with linear discriminant analysis (LDA) machine learning was employed as a rapid classification method for Podolica milk recognition against the milk of other bovine species. The results of the LAP-MALDI MS analysis of milk coupled with the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) demonstrate the potential of distinguishing between Podolica and control milk samples based on MS profiles. The classification accuracy achieved in the training set is 86% while it reaches 98.4% in the test set. Bottom-up proteomics revealed approximately 220 quantified bovine proteins (identified using the Bos taurus database), with cathelicidins and annexins exhibiting higher abundance levels in control cows (intensive farming breeds). On the other hand, the metaproteomics analysis highlighted the diversity within the milk's microbial ecosystem with interesting results that may reflect the diverse environmental variables. The bottom-up proteomics data analysis using the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database (CARD) revealed beta-lactamases and tetracycline resistance proteins in both control and Podolica milk samples, with no relevant breed-specific differences observed.

Abstract
Over recent years, the scientific community has acknowledged the crucial role of certain microbial strains inhabiting the intestinal ecosystem in promoting human health, and participating in various beneficial functions for the host. These microorganisms are now referred to as next-generation probiotics and are currently considered as biotherapeutic products and food or nutraceutical supplements. However, the majority of next-generation probiotic candidates pose nutritional demands and exhibit high sensitivity towards aerobic conditions, leading to numerous technological hurdles in large-scale production. This underscores the need for the development of suitable delivery systems capable of enhancing the viability and functionality of these probiotic strains. Currently, potential candidates for next generation probiotics (NGP) are being sought among gut bacteria linked to health, which include strains from the genera Bacteroids, Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia and Clostridium. In contrast to Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp., NGP, particularly Bacteroids spp. and Clostridium spp., appear to exhibit greater ambiguity regarding their potential to induce infectious diseases. The present review provides a comprehensive overview of NGPs in terms of their health beneficial effects, regulation framework and risk assessment targeting relevant criteria for commercialization in food and pharmaceutical markets.

Abstract
Celiac disease (CD) is a common autoimmune disorder in which the patients are unable to digest gluten, which is present in foods made up of wheat, barley and rye. Whilst diagnosis happens late in 80% of the cases, avoidance of such foods appears to be the common solution. Alternative management strategies are required for the patients and their families since CD is also genetically carried over. Probiotic therapeutics and the consumption of appropriate enzymes, such as prolyloligopeptidases (POPs), from gut-friendly bacteria could reduce the disease burden and provide a better lifestyle for CD patients. We have examined around 5000 gut bacterial genomes and identified nearly 4000 non-redundant putative POPs. A select set of 10 gut bacterial POP sequences were subject to three-dimensional modelling, ligand docking and molecular dynamics simulations where stable interactions were observed between the POPs and gluten peptides. Our study provides sequence and structural analysis of potential POP enzymes in gut bacterial genomes, which form a strong basis to offer probiotic solutions to CD patients. In particular, these enzymes could be lead future therapeutics for this disease.

Abstract
The gut microbiome-metabolites-kidney axis is a potential target for treating diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Our previous study found that Liraglutide attenuated DKD in rats by decreasing renal tubular ectopic lipid deposition (ELD) and serum metabolites levels, including L-5-Oxoproline (5-OP). However, the response of gut microbiome-metabolites-kidney axis to Liraglutide in DKD rats and the effect of 5-OP on ELD remain unknown. In this study, Sprague-Dawley rats were used as an animal model of DKD. They were subjected to a high fat diet, streptozotocin and uninephrectomy, followed by Liraglutide treatment (0.4 mg/kg d). Additionally, HK-2 cells were incubated with 30 mM glucose and 200 μM palmitate for 24h, and exposed to different concentrations of 5-OP. In DKD rats, Liraglutide dramatically improved the renal tubule structure. It increased the Simpson index (F = 4.487, p = 0.035) and reduced the Actinobacteria-to-Bacteroidetes ratio (F = 6.189, p = 0.014). At the genus level, Liraglutide increased the relative abundance of Clostridium, Oscillospira, Sarcina, SMB53, and 02d06 while decreasing that of Allobaculum. Meanwhile, 13 metabolites were significantly altered after Liraglutide treatment. Multi-omics analysis found that 5-OP levels were positively correlated with Clostridium abundance but negatively correlated with renal injury related indicators. In HK-2 cells, 5-OP significantly reduced the ELD in a dose-dependent manner through inhibiting the expression of SREBP1 and FAS. Overall, the renoprotective effect of Liraglutide in DKD rats is linked to the improvement of the gut microbiota composition and increased serum 5-OP levels, which may reduce ELD in renal tubular cells by lowering lipid synthesis.

Abstract
Clostridium bacteria were already known to Hippocrates many years before Christ. The name of the Clostridium species is owed to the Polish microbiologist, Adam Prażmowski. It is now known that these Clostridium bacteria are widespread in the natural environment, and their presence in food products is a threat to human health and life. According to European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reports, every year, there are poisonings or deaths due to ingestion of bacterial toxins, including those of the Clostridium spp. The strengthening of consumer health awareness has increased interest in consuming products with minimal processing in recent years, which has led to a need to develop new techniques to ensure the safety of microbiological food, including elimination of bacteria from the Clostridium genera. On the other hand, the high biochemical activity of Clostridium bacteria allows them to be used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and medical industries. Awareness of microbiological food safety is very important for our health. Unfortunately, in 2022, an increase in infections with Clostridium bacteria found in food was recorded. Knowledge about food contamination should thus be widely disseminated.

Abstract
Gut bacteria belonging to the Clostridium family play a pivotal role in regulating host energy balance and metabolic homeostasis. As a commensal bacterium, Clostridium sporogenes has been implicated in modulating host energy homeostasis, albeit the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of C. sporogenes supplementation on various physiological parameters, intestinal morphology, particularly adipose tissue accumulation, and glucolipid metabolism in mice. The findings reveal that mice supplemented with C. sporogenes for 6 weeks exhibited a notable increase in body weight, fat mass, adipocyte size, and serum triglyceride (TG) levels. Notably, the increased fat accumulation is observed despite consistent feed intake in treated mice. Mechanistically, C. sporogenes supplementation significantly improved the structure integrity of intestinal villi and enhanced energy absorption efficiency while reducing excretion of carbohydrates and fatty acids in feces. This was accompanied by upregulation of glucose and fatty acid transporter expression. Furthermore, supplementation with C. sporogenes promoted adipogenesis in both liver and adipose tissues, as evidenced by increased levels of hepatic pyruvate, acetyl-CoA, and TG, along with elevated expression levels of genes associated with lipid synthesis. Regarding the microbiological aspect, C. sporogenes supplementation correlated with an increased abundance of Clostridium genus bacteria and enhanced carbohydrate enzyme activity. In summary, C. sporogenes supplementation significantly promotes fat accumulation in mice by augmenting energy absorption and adipogenesis, possibly mediated by the expansion of Clostridium bacteria population with robust glycolipid metabolic ability. IMPORTANCE The Clostridia clusters have been implicated in energy metabolism, the specific species and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This present study is the first to report Clostridium sporogenes is able to affect fat accumulation and glycolipid metabolism. We indicated that gavage of C. sporogenes promoted the adipogenesis and fat accumulation in mice by not only increasing the abundance of Clostridium bacteria but by also enhancing the metabolic absorption of carbohydrates and fatty acids significantly. Obviously, changes of gut microbiota caused by the C. sporogenes, especially the significant increase of Clostridium bacteria, contributed to the fat accumulation of mice. In addition, the enhancement of Clostridium genus bacteria remarkably improved the synthesis of hepatic pyruvate, acetyl-CoA, and triglyceride levels, as well as reduced the excretion of fecal carbohydrates, short-chain fatty acids, and free fatty acids remarkably. These findings will help us to understand the relationship of specific bacteria and host energy homeostasis.

Abstract
The human gut microbiome, the host, and the environment are inextricably linked across the life course with significant health impacts. Consisting of trillions of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other micro-organisms, microbiota living within our gut are particularly dynamic and responsible for digestion and metabolism of diverse classes of ingested chemical pollutants. Exposure to chemical pollutants not only in early life but throughout growth and into adulthood can alter human hosts' ability to absorb and metabolize xenobiotics, nutrients, and other components critical to health and longevity. Inflammation is a common mechanism underlying multiple environmentally related chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, multiple cancer types, and mental health. While growing research supports complex interactions between pollutants and the gut microbiome, significant gaps exist. Few reviews provide descriptions of the complex mechanisms by which chemical pollutants interact with the host microbiome through either direct or indirect pathways to alter disease risk, with a particular focus on inflammatory pathways. This review focuses on examples of several classes of pollutants commonly ingested by humans, including (i) heavy metals, (ii) persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and (iii) nitrates. Digestive enzymes and gut microbes are the first line of absorption and metabolism of these chemicals, and gut microbes have been shown to alter compounds from a less to more toxic state influencing subsequent distribution and excretion. In addition, chemical pollutants may interact with or alter the selection of more harmful and less commensal microbiota, leading to gut dysbiosis, and changes in receptor-mediated signaling pathways that alter the integrity and function of the gut intestinal tract. Arsenic, cadmium, and lead (heavy metals), influence the microbiome directly by altering different classes of bacteria, and subsequently driving inflammation through metabolite production and different signaling pathways (LPS/TLR4 or proteoglycan/TLR2 pathways). POPs can alter gut microbial composition either directly or indirectly depending on their ability to activate key signaling pathways within the intestine (e.g., PCB-126 and AHR). Nitrates and nitrites' effect on the gut and host may depend on their ability to be transformed to secondary and tertiary metabolites by gut bacteria. Future research should continue to support foundational research both in vitro, in vivo, and longitudinal population-based research to better identify opportunities for prevention, gain additional mechanistic insights into the complex interactions between environmental pollutants and the microbiome and support additional translational science.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of dietary supplements, citrus (CTS) and cucumber (CMB), on the jejunum and cecum microbiota of 14- and 28-days old broiler chickens to evaluate their impact on the gut health and assess their role as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (ABGPs). 16SrRNA gene sequencing revealed the overall bacterial microbiota composition was significantly affected by the gut site (p?0.001) but not by either of the dietary supplements, CTS and CMB, at both 14 and 28 days of age. However, as a result of Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSE), CTS dietary supplements significantly increased the counts of Lactobacillus (p?0.01) and decreased the counts of Enterococcus (p?0.01) and Clostridium (p?0.05) in the jejunum, whereas the counts of Blautia were increased (p?0.01) and Enterococcus were decreased (p?0.05) in the cecum at both ages. Only minor CMB effects were identified in the cecum and non in the jejunum. The use of CTS dietary supplements has been shown to be associated to the reduction of potentially pathogenic bacteria (Enterococcus and Clostridium) and to the growth of beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillus and Blautia) which are known to have positive effects on chicken health in terms of nutrients absorption, stimulation and production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Therefore, this study suggests that the use of a CTS supplemented diet could promote gut health while no clear advantages have been identified with the use of CMB as a dietary supplement.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a global health concern, affecting over 250 million individuals worldwide. In recent years, the gut-brain axis has emerged as a promising field for understanding the pathophysiology of MDD. Microbial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-acetate, butyrate, and propionate-, have gained attention for their potential to influence epigenetic modifications within the host brain. However, the precise mechanisms through which these metabolites participate in MDD pathophysiology remain elusive. This study was designed to investigate the effects of oral SCFA supplementation in adult male Wistar rats subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). A subset of control and CUMS-exposed rats received different supplementations: sodium acetate (NaOAc) at a concentration of 60 mM, sodium butyrate (NaB) at 40 mM, sodium propionate (NaP) at 50 mM, or a mixture of these SCFAs. The gut microbiome was assessed through 16S rRNA sequencing, and epigenetic profiling was performed using Western blot analysis. Results demonstrated that NaP supplementation significantly alleviated anhedonia in stressed animals, as evidenced by improved performance in the sucrose consumption test. This ameliorative effect was potentially associated with the modulation of gut bacterial communities, accompanied by the attenuation of the region-specific epigenetic dysregulation in the brain of the animals exposed to chronic stress. These findings suggest a potential association between gut dysbiosis and stress response, and NaP could be a promising target for future MDD interventions. However, further studies are needed to fully elucidate the underlying mechanisms of these effects.

Abstract
Emerging evidence indicates that gut microbial dysbiosis is associated with the development of antipsychotic-induced weight gain in schizophrenia (SZ). However, the exact taxonomic composition and functionality that constitute the "obesogenic" microbial profile remain elusive. Our retrospective survey identified two groups of the SZ population separated by BMI, with 1/3 of patients developing overweight/obesity after chronic antipsychotic treatment. Based on multi-omics analysis, we observed altered gut microbiota in SZ patients with overweight/obesity, characterized by a reduction in several beneficial bacteria genera, including Bacteroides, Parabacteroides, Akkermansia, and Clostridium. This microbial dysbiosis was accompanied by disrupted energy expenditure and nutritional metabolism, worsened metabolic indices, and reduced levels of beneficial metabolites, e.g. indole-3-carboxylic acid and propionic acid. Moreover, leveraging data from first-episode drug-naïve schizophrenia (FSZ) patients at one-month and one-year follow-up, both artificial neural network and random forest classifier-based prediction models demonstrated a strong ability of microbial profiles to predict antipsychotic-induced weight gain. Importantly, FSZ patients with higher relative abundance of Parabacteria distasonis were less susceptible to antipsychotic-induced weight gain. Thus, gut microbiota could serve as a noninvasive approach to predict antipsychotic-induced weight gain, guiding clinical antipsychotics administration and developing novel therapeutic strategies for weight management in SZ.

Abstract
Growth factors, T helper (Th)1 polarization, and the microbiome are involved in the pathophysiology of major depression (MDD). It remains unclear whether the combination of these three pathways could enhance the accuracy of predicting the features of MDD, including recurrence of illness (ROI), suicidal behaviors and the phenome. We measured serum stem cell factor (SCF), stem cell growth factor (SCGF), stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), the ratio of serum Th1/Th2 cytokines (zTh1-zTh2), and the abundances of gut microbiome taxa by analyzing stool samples using 16S rDNA sequencing from 32 MDD patients and 37 healthy controls. The results show that serum SCF is significantly lower and VEGF increased in MDD. Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and ROI are significantly associated with lowered SCF and increasing VEGF. Lifetime and current suicidal behaviors are strongly predicted (63.5%) by an increased VEGF/SCF ratio, Th1 polarization, a gut microbiome enterotype indicating gut dysbiosis, and lowered abundance of Dorea and Faecalobacterium. Around 80.5% of the variance in the phenome's severity is explained by ROI, ACEs, and lowered Parabacteroides distasonis and Clostridium IV abundances. A large part of the variance in health-related quality of life (54.1%) is explained by the VEGF/SCF ratio, Th1 polarization, ACE, and male sex. In conclusion, key features of MDD are largely predicted by the cumulative effects of ACE, Th1 polarization, aberrations in growth factors and the gut microbiome with increased pathobionts but lowered beneficial symbionts.

Abstract
Oviductal inflammation (OI) significantly reduces the egg production and economic returns in poultry farming. While Lactobacillus crispatus (LAC) is effective against inflammation, its role in treating or preventing oviductal inflammation is understudied. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic mechanisms of LAC on oviductal inflammation, with a focus on reproductive tract health, microbiome, gene expression, and cytokine levels. This study involved 24 Jingfen No. 6 laying hens aged 60 weeks, divided into four groups: the CON, OI, OI + LAC, and OI + heat-killed Lactobacillus crispatus (HLAC) groups. And it included a 10-day adaptation, a 7-day period for the development of OI using inflammation-inducing drugs (the control received saline), followed by an 8-day treatment in which the CON and OI groups received 1 mL of MRS broth daily, and the OI + LAC and OI + HLAC groups were treated with live and heat-killed Lactobacillus crispatus (109 CFUs/mL), respectively, with six hens in each group. This study showed that Lactobacillus crispatus supplementation significantly reduced the oviductal inflammation and atrophy in the hens, with the affected hens showing markedly lower egg production rates (p < 0.001) compared to the control and treated groups (OI + HLAC and OI + LAC). The daily intake of fresh (OI + LAC, p = 0.076) or heat-killed (OI + HLAC, p < 0.01) Lactobacillus crispatus notably enhanced the feed conversion efficiency. The OI group suffered significant ovarian damage and vascular rupture, more so than the CON group, while Lactobacillus crispatus supplementation mitigated this damage. The IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 levels were significantly elevated in the OI group compared to those in the OI + LAC group (p < 0.05), with a significant reduction in the TNF-α levels in the latter (p < 0.001). The supplementation improved the microbial composition in the cecum, isthmus, and shell gland, enriching the cecum with beneficial bacteria, such as Ruminococcus_torques_group and Megamonas. This approach fostered ovarian health and follicle differentiation and preserved the epithelial cell barrier function in the shell gland, reducing inflammatory damage in the genital tract. This dual efficacy underscores the role of the probiotic in diminishing oviductal inflammation, regardless of its state.

Abstract
Introduction The enteric microbiome and its possible modulation to improve feed conversion or vaccine efficacy is gaining more attention in pigs. Weaning pigs from their dam, along with many routine procedures, is stressful. A better understanding of the impact of this process on the microbiome may be important for improving pig production. The objective of this study was to develop a weaner pig cannulation model, thus allowing ileum content collection from the same pig over time for 16S rRNA sequencing under different porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection statuses. Methods A total of 15 3-week-old pigs underwent abdominal surgery and were fitted with an ileum cannula, with ileum contents collected over time. In this pilot study, treatment groups included a NEG-CONTROL group (no vaccination, no PRRSV challenge), a POS-CONTROL group (no vaccination, challenged with PRRSV), a VAC-PRRSV group (vaccinated, challenged with PRRSV), a VAC-PRO-PRRSV group (vaccinated, supplemented with a probiotic, challenged with PRRSV), and a VAC-ANTI-PRRSV group (vaccinated, administered an antibiotic, challenged with PRRSV). We assessed the microbiome over time and measured anti-PRRSV serum antibodies, PRRSV load in serum and nasal samples, and the severity of lung lesions. Results Vaccination was protective against PRRSV challenge, irrespective of other treatments. All vaccinated pigs mounted an immune response to PRRSV within 1 week after vaccination. A discernible impact of treatment on the diversity, structure, and taxonomic abundance of the enteric microbiome among the groups was not observed. Instead, significant influences on the ileum microbiome were observed in relation to time and treatment. Discussion The cannulation model described in this pilot study has the potential to be useful in studying the impact of weaning, vaccination, disease challenge, and antimicrobial administration on the enteric microbiome and its impact on pig health and production. Remarkably, despite the cannulation procedures, all vaccinated pigs exhibited robust immune responses and remained protected against PRRSV challenge, as evidenced by the development of anti-PRRSV serum antibodies and viral shedding data.

Abstract
Interspecies pathways in the gut microbiome have been shown to metabolize levodopa, the primary treatment for Parkinson's disease, and reduce its bioavailability. While the enzymatic reactions have been identified, the ability to establish the resulting macromolecules as biomarkers of microbial metabolism remains technically challenging. In this study, we leveraged an untargeted mass spectrometry-based approach to investigate volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced during levodopa metabolism by Enterococcus faecalis, Clostridium sporogenes, and Eggerthella lenta. We cultured these organisms with and without their respective bioactive metabolites and detected levodopa-induced shifts in VOC profiles. We then utilized bioinformatics to identify significant differences in 2,6-dimethylpyrazine, 4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, and 4,5-dimethylpyrimidine associated with its biotransformation. Supplementing cultures with inhibitors of levodopa-metabolizing enzymes revealed specific modulation of levodopa-associated diazines, verifying their relationship to its metabolism. Furthermore, functional group analysis depicts strain-specific VOC profiles that reflect interspecies differences in metabolic activity that can be leveraged to assess microbiome functionality in individual patients. Collectively, this work identifies previously uncharacterized metabolites of microbe-mediated levodopa metabolism to determine potential indicators of this activity and further elucidate the metabolic capabilities of different gut bacteria.

Abstract
Enteritis poses a significant threat to fish farming, characterized by symptoms of intestinal and hepatic inflammation, physiological dysfunction, and dysbiosis. Focused on the leopard coral grouper (Plectropomus leopardus) with an enteritis outbreak on a South China Sea farm, our prior scrutiny did not find any abnormalities in feeding or conventional water quality factors, nor were any specific pathogen infections related to enteritis identified. This study further elucidates their intestinal flora alterations, host responses, and their interactions to uncover the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms and facilitate effective prevention and management strategies. Enteritis-affected fish exhibited substantial differences in intestinal flora compared to control fish (P = 0.001). Notably, norank_f_Alcaligenaceae, which has a negative impact on fish health, predominated in enteritis-affected fish (91.76 %), while the probiotic genus Lactococcus dominated in controls (93.90 %). Additionally, certain genera with pathogenesis potentials like Achromobacter, Sphingomonas, and Streptococcus were more abundant in diseased fish, whereas Enterococcus and Clostridium_sensu_stricto with probiotic potentials were enriched in control fish. At the transcriptomic level, strong inflammatory responses, accompanied by impaired metabolic functions, tissue damage, and iron death signaling activation were observed in the intestines and liver during enteritis. Furthermore, correlation analysis highlighted that potential pathogen groups were positively associated with inflammation and tissue damage genes while presenting negatively correlated with metabolic function-related genes. In conclusion, dysbiosis in the intestinal microbiome, particularly an aberrantly high abundance of Alcaligenaceae with pathogenic potential may be the main trigger for this enteritis outbreak. Alcaligenaceae alongside Achromobacter, Sphingomonas, and Streptococcus emerged as biomarkers for enteritis, whereas some species of Lactococcus, Clostridium_sensu_stricto, and Enterococcus showed promise as probiotics to alleviate enteritis symptoms. These findings enhance our understanding of enteritis pathogenesis, highlight intestinal microbiota shifts in leopard coral grouper, and propose biomarkers for monitoring, probiotic selection, and enteritis management.

Abstract
Diet adjustment will affect the health of gut microbiota, which in turn influences the development and function of the organism's brain through the gut-brain axis. Walnut oil (WO), peony seed oil (PSO) and camellia seed oil (CSO), as typical representatives of woody plant oils, have been shown to have the potential to improve cognitive impairment in mice, but the function mechanisms are not clear. In this study, we comparatively investigated the neuroprotective effects of these three oils on D-galactose (D-gal)-induced cognitive impairment in mice, and found that the ameliorative effect of WO was more prominent. During the behavioral experiments, supplementation with all three oils would improve spatial learning and memory functions in D-gal mice, with a significant reduction in the error times (p < 0.001) and a significant increase in step-down latency (p < 0.001); walnut oil supplementation also significantly increased the number of hidden platform traversals, the target quadrant spent times and percentage of distance (p < 0.05). The results of biomarker analysis showed that WO, in addition to significantly inhibiting D-gal-induced oxidative stress and neuroinflammation as did PSO, significantly increased the ACh content in the mouse brain (p < 0.05) and modulated neurotransmitter levels. The results of further microbiota diversity sequencing experiments also confirmed that dietary supplementation with all three oils affected the diversity and composition of the gut microbiota in mice. Among them, WO significantly restored the balance of the mouse gut microbiota by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes) and decreasing the abundance of harmful bacteria (Clostridium, Shigella, Serratia), which was consistent with the results of behavioral experiments and biomarker analyses. Based on the analysis of the fatty acid composition of the three oils and changes in the gut microbiota, it is hypothesized that there is a correlation between the fatty acid composition of the dietary supplement oils and neuroprotective effects. The superiority of WO over PSO and CSO in improving cognitive impairment is mainly attributed to its balanced composition of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.

Abstract
The Jinwu pig (JW) is a hybrid breed originating from the Chinese indigenous Jinhua pig and Duroc pig, boasting excellent meat quality and fast growth rates. This study aimed to verify the tolerance of JW to roughage, similar to most Chinese indigenous pigs. In this research, two types of feed were provided to JW and Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire pigs (DLY): a basal diet and a roughage diet (increasing the rice bran and wheat bran content in the basal diet from 23% to 40%) for a 65-day experimental period. The roughage diet showed an increasing trend in the feed conversion ratio (F/G), with a 17.61% increase in feed consumption per unit weight gain for DLY, while the increase for JW was only 4.26%. A 16S rRNA sequencing analysis revealed that the roughage diet increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Clostridium, while reducing the relative abundance of some potential pathogens, thus improving the gut microbiota environment. After being fed with the roughage diet, the abundance of bacterial genera, such as Treponema, Terrisporobacter, Coprococcus, and Ruminococcaceae, which aid in the digestion and utilization of dietary fiber, were significantly higher in Jinwu compared to DLY, indicating that these bacterial genera confer Jinwu with a higher tolerance to roughage than DLY.

Abstract
In this study, g-C3N4/PANI was prepared by in situ oxidative polymerization. Graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with surface defects was deposited onto the surface of conductive polyaniline (PANI) to form a p-n heterojunction. This construction aimed to create an efficient heterogeneous catalyst, increasing the surface defect level and active sites of the composite, and augmenting its capability to capture and transfer extracellular electrons under anaerobic conditions. This addresses the challenge of low efficiency in direct interspecies electron transfer between bacteria and archaea during anaerobic digestion for methane production. The results showed that the prepared g-C3N4/PANI increased the CH4 yield and CH4 production rate by 82% and 96%, respectively. Notably, the conductivity and XPS test results showed that the ratio of g-C3N4 to PANI was 0.15, and the composite exhibited favorable conductivity, with a uniform distribution of pyrrolic nitrogen, pyridinic nitrogen, and graphitic nitrogen, each accounting for approximately 30%. Furthermore, g-C3N4/PANI effectively enhanced the metabolic efficiency of intermediate products such as acetate and butyrate. Analysis of the microbial community structure revealed that g-C3N4/PANI led to a significant increase in the abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanolinea (from 48% to 64%) and enriched Clostridium (a rise of 1%) with direct interspecies electron transfer capability. Microbial community function analysis demonstrated that the addition of g-C3N4/PANI boosted the activities of key enzymes involved in anaerobic digestion, including phosphate transacetylase (PTA), phospho-butyryl transferase (PTB), and NAD-independent lactate dehydrogenase (NNLD), by 47%, 135%, and 153%, respectively. This acceleration in enzymatic activity promoted the metabolism of acetyl-CoA, butyryl-CoA, and pyruvate. Additionally, the function of ABC transporters was enhanced, thereby improving the efficiency of material and energy exchange among microorganisms.

Abstract
Chronic stress (CS) endangers the physical and mental health of adolescents. Therefore, alleviating and preventing such negative health impacts are a top priority. This study explores the effect of feeding shrimp head hydrolysate (SHH) on gut microbiota, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and neurotransmitters in growing C57BL/6 mice subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stress. Mice in the model group and three SHH groups were exposed to CS for 44 days, distilled water and SHH doses of 0.18, 0.45, 0.90 g/kg·BW were given respectively by gavage daily for 30 days from the 15th day. The results showed that SHH can significantly reverse depression-like behaviour, amino acids degradation, α diversity and β diversity, proportion of Firmicutes and Bacteroidota, abundance of genera such as Muribaculaceae, Bacteroides, Prevotellaceae_UCG-001, Parabacteroides and Alistipes, concentration of five short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), 5-HT and glutamate induced by CS. Muribaculaceae and butyric acid may be a controlled target. This study highlights the potential and broad application of SHH as an active ingredient in food to combat chronic stress damage.

Abstract
Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) can lead to significant morbidity and mortality in cancer patients. While they are unlikely to cause severe disease and are self-limiting in healthy individuals, cancer patients are especially susceptible to opportunistic parasitic infections. The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in various aspects of health, including immune regulation and metabolic processes. Parasites occupy the same environment as bacteria in the gut. Recent research suggests intestinal parasites can disrupt the normal balance of the gut microbiota. However, there is limited understanding of this co-infection dynamic among cancer patients in Malaysia. A study was conducted to determine the prevalence and relationship between intestinal parasites and gut microbiota composition in cancer patients. Stool samples from 134 cancer patients undergoing active treatment or newly diagnosed were collected and examined for the presence of intestinal parasites and gut microbiota composition. The study also involved 17 healthy individuals for comparison and control. Sequencing with 16S RNA at the V3-V4 region was used to determine the gut microbial composition between infected and non-infected cancer patients and healthy control subjects. The overall prevalence of IPIs among cancer patients was found to be 32.8%. Microsporidia spp. Accounted for the highest percentage at 20.1%, followed by Entamoeba spp. (3.7%), Cryptosporidium spp. (3.0%), Cyclospora spp. (2.2%), and Ascaris lumbricoides (0.8%). None of the health control subjects tested positive for intestinal parasites. The sequencing data analysis revealed that the gut microbiota diversity and composition were significantly different in cancer patients than in healthy controls (p < 0.001). A significant dissimilarity was observed in the bacterial composition between parasite-infected and non-infected patients based on Bray-Curtis (p = 0.041) and Jaccard (p = 0.021) measurements. Bacteria from the genus Enterococcus were enriched in the parasite-infected groups, while Faecalibacterium prausnitzii reduced compared to non-infected and control groups. Further analysis between different IPIs and non-infected individuals demonstrated a noteworthy variation in Entamoeba-infected (unweighted UniFrac: p = 0.008), Cryptosporidium-infected (Bray-Curtis: p = 0.034) and microsporidia-infected (unweighted: p = 0.026; weighted: p = 0.019; Jaccard: p = 0.031) samples. No significant dissimilarity was observed between Cyclospora-infected groups and non-infected groups. Specifically, patients infected with Cryptosporidium and Entamoeba showed increased obligate anaerobic bacteria. Clostridiales were enriched with Entamoeba infections, whereas those from Coriobacteriales decreased. Bacteroidales and Clostridium were found in higher abundance in the gut microbiota with Cryptosporidium infection, while Bacillales decreased. Additionally, bacteria from the genus Enterococcus were enriched in microsporidia-infected patients. In contrast, bacteria from the Clostridiales order, Faecalibacterium, Parabacteroides, Collinsella, Ruminococcus, and Sporosarcina decreased compared to the non-infected groups. These findings underscore the importance of understanding and managing the interactions between intestinal parasites and gut microbiota for improved outcomes in cancer patients.

Abstract
Probiotics are a potential strategy for salmonellosis control. A defined pig microbiota (DPM) mixture of nine bacterial strains previously exhibited probiotic and anti-Salmonella properties in vitro. Therefore, we evaluated its gut colonization ability and protection effect against S. typhimurium LT2-induced infection in the gnotobiotic piglet model. The DPM mixture successfully colonized the piglet gut and was stable and safe until the end of the experiment. The colon was inhabited by about 9 log CFU g-1 with a significant representation of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli compared to ileal levels around 7-8 log CFU g-1. Spore-forming clostridia and bacilli seemed to inhabit the environment only temporarily. The bacterial consortium contributed to the colonization of the gut at an entire length. The amplicon profile analysis supported the cultivation trend with a considerable representation of lactobacilli with bacilli in the ileum and bifidobacteria with clostridia in the colon. Although there was no significant Salmonella-positive elimination, it seems that the administered bacteria conferred the protection of infected piglets because of the slowed delayed infection manifestation without translocations of Salmonella cells to the blood circulation. Due to its colonization stability and potential protective anti-Salmonella traits, the DPM mixture has promising potential in pig production applications. However, advanced immunological tests are needed.

Abstract
Numerous studies have reported a correlation between gut microbiota and influenza A virus (IAV) infection and disease severity. However, the causal relationship between these factors remains inadequately explored. This investigation aimed to assess the influence of gut microbiota on susceptibility to human infection with H7N9 avian IAV and the severity of influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 infection. A two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis was conducted, integrating our in-house genome-wide association study (GWAS) on H7N9 susceptibility and H1N1pdm09 severity with a metagenomics GWAS dataset from a Chinese population. Twelve and fifteen gut microbiotas were causally associated with H7N9 susceptibility or H1N1pdm09 severity, separately. Notably, Clostridium hylemonae and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii were negative associated with H7N9 susceptibility and H1N1pdm09 severity, respectively. Moreover, Streptococcus peroris and Streptococcus sanguinis were associated with H7N9 susceptibility, while Streptococcus parasanguini and Streptococcus suis were correlated with H1N1pdm09 severity. These results provide novel insights into the interplay between gut microbiota and IAV pathogenesis as well as new clues for mechanism research regarding therapeutic interventions or IAV infections. Future studies should concentrate on clarifying the regulatory mechanisms of gut microbiota and developing efficacious approaches to reduce the incidence of IAV infections, which could improve strategy for preventing and treating IAV infection worldwide.

Abstract
Cancers are causing millions of deaths and leaving a huge clinical and economic burden. High costs of cancer drugs are limiting their access to the growing number of cancer cases. The development of more affordable alternative therapy could reach more patients. As gut microbiota plays a significant role in the development and treatment of cancer, microbiome-targeted therapy has gained more attention in recent years. Dietary and natural compounds can modulate gut microbiota composition while providing broader and more accessible access to medicine. Tea compounds have been shown to have anti-cancer properties as well as modulate the gut microbiota and their related metabolites. However, there is no comprehensive review that focuses on the gut modulatory effects of tea compounds and their impact on reshaping the metabolic profiles, particularly in cancer models. In this review, the effects of different tea compounds on gut microbiota in cancer settings are discussed. Furthermore, the relationship between these modulated bacteria and their related metabolites, along with the mechanisms of how these changes led to cancer intervention are summarized.

Abstract
Cardio-metabolic disease is a significant global health challenge with increasing prevalence. Recent research underscores the disruption of gut microbial balance as a key factor in disease susceptibility. We aimed to characterize the gut microbiota composition and function in cardio-metabolic disease and healthy controls. For this purpose, we collected stool samples of 18 subjects (12 diseased, 6 healthy) and we performed metagenomics analysis and functional prediction using QIIME2 and PICRUSt. Furthermore, we carried out assessments of microbe-gene interactions, gene ontology, and microbe-disease associations. Our findings revealed distinct microbial patterns in the diseased group, particularly evident in lower taxonomic levels with significant variations in 14 microbial features. The diseased cohort exhibited an enrichment of Lachnospiraceae family, correlating with obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic disturbances. Conversely, reduced levels of Clostridium, Gemmiger, and Ruminococcus genera indicated a potential inflammatory state, linked to compromised butyrate production and gut permeability. Functional analyses highlighted dysregulated pathways in amino acid metabolism and energy equilibrium, with perturbations correlating with elevated branch-chain amino acid levels-a known contributor to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. These findings were consistent across biomarker assessments, microbe-gene associations, and gene ontology analyses, emphasizing the intricate interplay between gut microbial dysbiosis and cardio-metabolic disease progression. In conclusion, our study unveils significant shifts in gut microbial composition and function in cardio-metabolic disease, emphasizing the broader implications of microbial dysregulation. Addressing gut microbial balance emerges as a crucial therapeutic target in managing cardio-metabolic disease burden.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Acute lung injury is a critical complication of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). The gut microbiota and its metabolites play an important role in SAP development and may provide new targets for AP-associated lung injury. Based on the ability to reverse AP injury, we proposed that Clostridium butyricum may reduce the potential for AP-associated lung injury by modulating with intestinal microbiota and related metabolic pathways. METHODS An AP disease model was established in mice and treated with C. butyricum. The structure and composition of the intestinal microbiota in mouse feces were analyzed by 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. Non-targeted metabolite analysis was used to quantify the microbiota derivatives. The histopathology of mouse pancreas and lung tissues was examined using hematoxylin-eosin staining. Pancreatic and lung tissues from mice were stained with immunohistochemistry and protein immunoblotting to detect inflammatory factors IL-6, IL-1β, and MCP-1. RESULTS C. butyricum ameliorated the dysregulation of microbiota diversity in a model of AP combined with lung injury and affected fatty acid metabolism by lowering triglyceride levels, which were closely related to the alteration in the relative abundance of Erysipelatoclostridium and Akkermansia. In addition, C. butyricum treatment attenuated pathological damage in the pancreatic and lung tissues and significantly suppressed the expression of inflammatory factors in mice. CONCLUSIONS C. butyricum may alleviate lung injury associated with AP by interfering with the relevant intestinal microbiota and modulating relevant metabolic pathways.

Abstract
Probiotic-containing fermented dairy foods have the potential to benefit human health, but the importance of the dairy matrix for efficacy remains unclear. We investigated the capacity of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei BL23 in phosphate-buffered saline (BL23-PBS), BL23-fermented milk (BL23-milk), and milk to modify intestinal and behavioral responses in a dextran sodium sulfate (DSS, 3% wt/vol) mouse model of colitis. Significant sex-dependent differences were found such that female mice exhibited more severe colitis, greater weight loss, and higher mortality rates. Sex differences were also found for ion transport ex vivo, colonic cytokine and tight junction gene expression, and fecal microbiota composition. Measurements of milk and BL23 effects showed BL23-PBS consumption improved weight recovery in females, whereas milk resulted in better body weight recovery in males. Occludin and Claudin-2 gene transcript levels indicated barrier function was impaired in males, but BL23-milk was still found to improve colonic ion transport in those mice. Proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory gene expression levels were increased in both male and female mice fed BL23, and to a more variable extent, milk, compared with controls. The female mouse fecal microbiota contained high proportions of Akkermansia (average of 18.1%) at baseline, and females exhibited more changes in gut microbiota composition following BL23 and milk intake. Male fecal microbiota harbored significantly more Parasutterella and less Blautia and Roseburia after DSS treatment, independent of BL23 or milk consumption. These findings show the complex interplay between dietary components and sex-dependent responses in mitigating inflammation in the digestive tract.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Sex-dependent responses to probiotic Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and milk and the potential of the dairy matrix to enhance probiotic protection against colitis in this context have not been previously explored. Female mice were more sensitive than males to colonic injury, and neither treatment effectively alleviated inflammation in both sexes. These sex-dependent responses may result from differences in the higher baseline proportions of Akkermansia in the gut microbiome of female mice.

Abstract
A healthy animal intestine hosts a diverse population of bacteria in a symbiotic relationship. These bacteria utilize nutrients in the host's intestinal environment for growth and reproduction. In return, they assist the host in digesting and metabolizing nutrients, fortifying the intestinal barrier, defending against potential pathogens, and maintaining gut health. Bacterial colonization is a crucial aspect of this interaction between bacteria and the intestine and involves the attachment of bacteria to intestinal mucus or epithelial cells through nonspecific or specific interactions. This process primarily relies on adhesins. The binding of bacterial adhesins to host receptors is a prerequisite for the long-term colonization of bacteria and serves as the foundation for the pathogenicity of pathogenic bacteria. Intervening in the adhesion and colonization of bacteria in animal intestines may offer an effective approach to treating gastrointestinal diseases and preventing pathogenic infections. Therefore, this paper reviews the situation and mechanisms of bacterial colonization, the colonization characteristics of various bacteria, and the factors influencing bacterial colonization. The aim of this study was to serve as a reference for further research on bacteria-gut interactions and improving animal gut health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) is an important precursor of heart failure (HF), but little is known about its relationship with gut dysbiosis and microbial-related metabolites. By leveraging the multi-omics data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), a study with population at high burden of LVDD, we aimed to characterize gut microbiota associated with LVDD and identify metabolite signatures of gut dysbiosis and incident LVDD. RESULTS We included up to 1996 Hispanic/Latino adults (mean age: 59.4 years; 67.1% female) with comprehensive echocardiography assessments, gut microbiome, and blood metabolome data. LVDD was defined through a composite criterion involving tissue Doppler assessment and left atrial volume index measurements. Among 1996 participants, 916 (45.9%) had prevalent LVDD, and 212 out of 594 participants without LVDD at baseline developed incident LVDD over a median 4.3 years of follow-up. Using multivariable-adjusted analysis of compositions of microbiomes (ANCOM-II) method, we identified 7 out of 512 dominant gut bacterial species (prevalence > 20%) associated with prevalent LVDD (FDR-q < 0.1), with inverse associations being found for Intestinimonas_massiliensis, Clostridium_phoceensis, and Bacteroide_coprocola and positive associations for Gardnerella_vaginali, Acidaminococcus_fermentans, Pseudomonas_aeruginosa, and Necropsobacter_massiliensis. Using multivariable adjusted linear regression, 220 out of 669 circulating metabolites with detection rate > 75% were associated with the identified LVDD-related bacterial species (FDR-q < 0.1), with the majority being linked to Intestinimonas_massiliensis, Clostridium_phoceensis, and Acidaminococcus_fermentans. Furthermore, 46 of these bacteria-associated metabolites, mostly glycerophospholipids, secondary bile acids, and amino acids, were associated with prevalent LVDD (FDR-q < 0.1), 21 of which were associated with incident LVDD (relative risk ranging from 0.81 [p = 0.001, for guanidinoacetate] to 1.25 [p = 9 × 10-5, for 1-stearoyl-2-arachidonoyl-GPE (18:0/20:4)]). The inclusion of these 21 bacterial-related metabolites significantly improved the prediction of incident LVDD compared with a traditional risk factor model (the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC] = 0.73 vs 0.70, p = 0.001). Metabolite-based proxy association analyses revealed the inverse associations of Intestinimonas_massilliensis and Clostridium_phoceensis and the positive association of Acidaminococcus_fermentans with incident LVDD. CONCLUSION In this study of US Hispanics/Latinos, we identified multiple gut bacteria and related metabolites linked to LVDD, suggesting their potential roles in this preclinical HF entity. Abstract
The associations between human concussions and subsequent sequelae of chronic neuropsychiatric and cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension have been reported; however, little is known about the underlying biological processes. We hypothesized that dietary changes, including a high-salt diet, disrupt the bidirectional gut-brain axis, resulting in worsening neuroinflammation and emergence of cardiovascular and behavioural phenotypes in the chronic period after repetitive closed head injury in adolescent mice. Adolescent mice were subjected to three daily closed head injuries, recovered for 12 weeks and then maintained on a high-salt diet or a normal diet for an additional 12 weeks. Experimental endpoints were haemodynamics, behaviour, microglial gene expression (bulk RNA sequencing), brain inflammation (brain tissue quantitative PCR) and microbiome diversity (16S RNA sequencing). High-salt diet did not affect systemic blood pressure or heart rate in sham or injured mice. High-salt diet increased anxiety-like behaviour in injured mice compared to sham mice fed with high-salt diet and injured mice fed with normal diet. Increased anxiety in injured mice that received a high-salt diet was associated with microgliosis and a proinflammatory microglial transcriptomic signature, including upregulation in interferon-gamma, interferon-beta and oxidative stress-related pathways. Accordingly, we found upregulation of tumour necrosis factor-alpha and interferon-gamma mRNA in the brain tissue of high salt diet-fed injured mice. High-salt diet had a larger effect on the gut microbiome composition than repetitive closed head injury. Increases in gut microbes in the families Lachnospiraceae, Erysipelotrichaceae and Clostridiaceae were positively correlated with anxiety-like behaviours. In contrast, Muribaculaceae, Acholeplasmataceae and Lactobacillaceae were negatively correlated with anxiety in injured mice that received a high-salt diet, a time-dependent effect. The findings suggest that high-salt diet, administered after a recovery period, may affect neurologic outcomes following mild repetitive head injury, including the development of anxiety. This effect was linked to microbiome dysregulation and an exacerbation of microglial inflammation, which may be physiological targets to prevent behavioural sequelae in the chronic period after mild repetitive head injury. The data suggest an important contribution of diet in determining long-term outcomes after mild repetitive head injury.

Abstract
Southern Tamanduas (Tamandua tetradactyla) belong to the specialized placental myrmecophages. There is not much information about their intestinal microbiome. Moreover, due to their food specialization, it is difficult to create an adequate diet under breeding conditions. Therefore, we used 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing to analyze the fecal microbiome of captive Southern Tamanduas from four locations in the Czech Republic and evaluated the impact of the incoming diet and facility conditions on microbiome composition. Together with the microbiome analysis, we also quantified and identified cultivable commensals. The anteater fecal microbiome was dominated by the phyla Bacillota and Bacteroidota, while Pseudomonadota, Spirochaetota, and Actinobacteriota were less abundant. At the taxonomic family level, Lachnospiraceae, Prevotellaceae, Bacteroidaceae, Oscillospiraceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, Spirochaetaceae, Ruminococcaceae, Leuconostocaceae, and Streptococcaceae were mainly represented in the fecal microbiome of animals from all locations. Interestingly, Lactobacillaceae dominated in the location with a zoo-made diet. These animals also had significantly lower diversity of gut microbiome in comparison with animals from other locations fed mainly with a complete commercial diet. Moreover, captive conditions of analyzed anteater included other factors such as the enrichment of the diet with insect-based products, probiotic interventions, the presence of other animals in the exposure, which can potentially affect the composition of the microbiome and cultivable microbes. In total, 63 bacterial species from beneficial commensal to opportunistic pathogen were isolated and identified using MALDI-TOF MS in the set of more than one thousand selected isolates. Half of the detected species were present in the fecal microbiota of most animals, the rest varied across animals and locations.

Abstract
Gut microbiota impact host physiology, though simultaneous investigations in ectothermic vertebrates are rare. Particularly, amphibians may exhibit more complex interactions between host physiology and the effects of gut microbiota due to the combination of seasonal changes and complex life histories. In this study, we assessed the relationships among food resources, gut bacterial communities, and host physiology in frogs (Phelophylax nigromaculatus), taking into account seasonal and life history variations. We found that food sources were not correlated with physiological parameters but had some relationships with the gut bacterial community. Variations in gut bacterial community and host physiology were influenced by the combined effects of seasonal differences and life history, though mostly driven by seasonal differences. An increase in Firmicutes was associated with higher fat content, reflecting potential fat storage in frogs during the non-breeding season. The increase in Bacteroidetes resulted in lower fat content in adult frogs and decreased immunity in juvenile frogs during the breeding season, demonstrating a direct link. Our results suggest that the gut microbiome may act as a link between food conditions and physiological status, and that the combined effect of seasons and life history could reinforce the relationship between gut microbiota and physiological status in ectothermic animals. While food sources may influence the gut microbiota of ectotherms, we contend that temperature-correlated seasonal variation, which predominately influences most ectotherms, is a significant factor.

Abstract
Chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain after radiotherapy continue to be a problem in cancer survivors. Gut microbiomes are essential for preventing intestinal inflammation, maintaining intestinal integrity, maintaining enterohepatic circulation, regulating bile acid metabolism, and absorption of nutrients, including fat-soluble vitamins. Gut microbiome dysbiosis is expected to cause inflammation, bile acid malabsorption, malnutrition, and associated symptoms. Postradiotherapy, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes phylum are significantly decreased while Fusobacteria and other unclassified bacteria are increased. Available evidence suggests harmful bacteria Veillonella, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Ruminococcus are sensitive to Metronidazole or Ciprofloxacin. Beneficial bacteria lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are relatively resistant to metronidazole. We hypothesize and provide an evidence-based review that short-course targeted antibiotics followed by specific probiotics may lead to alleviation of radiation enteritis.

Abstract
The gut-brain axis, which includes gut microbiota and microbiome-derived metabolites, might be implicated in depression. We reported the sustained prophylactic effects of a new antidepressant arketamine in chronic restrain stress (CRS) model of depression. In this study, we investigated the role of gut-brain axis on the prophylactic effects of arketamine in the CRS (7 days) model. Pretreatment with arketamine (10 mg/kg, 1 day prior to the CRS onset) significantly prevented CRS-induced body weight loss, increased immobility time of forced swimming test, decreased sucrose preference of sucrose preference test, and reduced expressions of synaptic proteins (GluA1 and PSD-95) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in the male mice. Gut microbiota analysis showed that pretreatment with arketamine might restore altered abundance of gut microbiota in CRS-exposed mice. An untargeted metabolomics analysis revealed four metabolites (e.g., L-leucine, N-acetyl-l-glutamine, 2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-3-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]acrylonitrile, L-threonine amide) that were altered between control and CRS group; however, there were found to be altered between the saline + CRS group and the arketamine + CRS group. Network analysis demonstrated correlations among synaptic proteins in the PFC and certain microbiota, and blood metabolites. These findings suggest that gut-brain axis, including its metabolites, might partially contribute to the persistent prophylactic effects of arketamine in the CRS model.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of acerola and guava fruit processing co-products fermented with probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-05 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei L-10 on the abundance of different intestinal bacterial groups and microbial metabolic activity during 48 h of in vitro fecal fermentation. Digested fermented fruit co-products increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacterial groups while overall decreasing or maintaining the relative abundance of non-beneficial bacterial groups, suggesting selective stimulatory effects on beneficial bacterial intestinal populations. The fermented co-products stimulated microbial metabolic activity due to decreased pH, sugar consumption, short-chain fatty acid production, phenolic compound and metabolic profile alteration, and high antioxidant capacity during fecal fermentation. Acerola and guava co-products have high nutritional value and bioactive compounds whose fermentation with probiotics improves their potential functionalities. The results show that fermented fruit co-products could induce beneficial changes in the relative abundance of several bacterial groups as well as in the metabolic activity of the human intestinal microbiota. These results highlight their potential as novel and circular candidates for use as synbiotic ingredients.

Abstract
Representatives of the genus Bifidobacterium are widely used as probiotics to modulate the gut microbiome and alleviate various health conditions. The action mechanisms of probiotics rely on their direct effect on the gut microbiota and the local and systemic effect of its metabolites. The main purpose of this animal experiment was to assess the biosafety of the Bifidobacterium longum strain BIOCC1719. Additional aims were to characterise the influence of the strain on the intestinal microbiota and the effect on several health parameters of the host during 15- and 30-day oral administration of the strain to mice. The strain altered the gut microbial community, thereby altering luminal short-chain fatty acid metabolism, resulting in a shift in the proportions of acetic, butyric, and propionic acids in the faeces and serum of the test group mice. Targeted metabolic profiling of serum revealed the possible ability of the strain to positively affect the hosts' amino acids and bile acids metabolism, as the cholic acid, deoxycholic acid, aspartate, and glutamate concentration were significantly higher in the test group. The tendency to increase anti-inflammatory polyamines (spermidine, putrescine) and neuroprotective 3-indolepropionic acid metabolism and to lower uremic toxins (P-cresol-SO4, indoxyl-SO4) was registered. Thus, B. longum BIOCC1719 may exert health-promoting effects on the host through modulation of the gut microbiome and the host metabolome via inducing the production of health-promoting bioactive compounds. The health effects of the strain need to be confirmed in clinical trials with human volunteers.

Abstract
Probiotics are live microorganisms exerting beneficial effects on the host's health when administered in adequate amounts. Among the most popular and adequately studied probiotics are bacteria from the families Lactobacillaceae, Bifidobacteriaceae and yeasts. Most of them have been shown, both in vitro and in vivo studies of intestinal inflammation models, to provide favorable results by means of improving the gut microbiota composition, promoting the wound healing process and shaping the immunological responses. Chronic intestinal conditions, such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), are characterized by an imbalance in microbiota composition, with decreased diversity, and by relapsing and persisting inflammation, which may lead to mucosal damage. Although the results of the clinical studies investigating the effect of probiotics on patients with IBD are still controversial, it is without doubt that these microorganisms and their metabolites, now named postbiotics, have a positive influence on both the host's microbiota and the immune system, and ultimately alter the topical tissue microenvironment. This influence is achieved through three axes: (1) By displacement of potential pathogens via competitive exclusion; (2) by offering protection to the host through the secretion of various defensive mediators; and (3) by supplying the host with essential nutrients. We will analyze and discuss almost all the in vitro and in vivo studies of the past 2 years dealing with the possible favorable effects of certain probiotic genus on gut immunological responses, highlighting which species are the most beneficial against intestinal inflammation.

Abstract
Purpose The diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is based on symptom-based criteria due to lack of reliable disease-specific biomarkers. Gut microbiota is perturbed in IBS and when comparing different methods used to analyze gut microbiota, the results might be obscured. Therefore, in this systematic review we aimed to investigate the profile of fecal bacterial markers and dysbiosis index (DI) in patients with IBS and IBS subgroups compared to healthy controls (HCs) conducted by the same method (GA-map Dysbiosis Test based on16S rRNA sequencing). Material and Method We searched PubMed, EMBASE (Ovid) and Cochrane Library for case-control studies comparing fecal gut microbiota analyzed with the GA-map® Dysbiosis Test (Oslo, Norway) in patients with IBS and HCs. Our outcomes were the difference in fecal bacterial markers and DI in patients with IBS and IBS subgroups compared to HCs. Results The search identified 28 citations; five articles were included. Most studies evaluated fecal bacterial markers and DI in patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D). Results of fecal bacteria profile in IBS and IBS subgroups compared to HCs are inconsistent, however, two studies showed increased levels of Ruminococcus gnavus in IBS-D compared to HCs and results of DI indicated IBS and IBS subgroups (especially IBS-D) having higher DI compared to HCs. Conclusion This systematic review revealed inconsistent findings in respect to differences in bacterial markers between IBS and IBS subgroups with HCs in studies using the GA-map Dysbiosis Test based on 16S rRNA sequencing. However, the test is quite novel, and few studies have used the method so far. More research comparing fecal microbiota profile differences in IBS and IBS subgroups compared to HCs utilizing the same method of analysis is needed to give us further insight into the gut bacteria profile in IBS and the clinical consequences of intestinal dysbiosis.

Abstract
Introduction Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an incurable chronic respiratory disease, has become a major public health problem. The relationship between the composition of intestinal microbiota and the important clinical factors affecting COPD remains unclear. This study aimed to identify specific intestinal microbiota with high clinical diagnostic value for COPD. Methods The fecal microbiota of patients with COPD and healthy individuals were analyzed by 16S rDNA sequencing. Random forest classification was performed to analyze the different intestinal microbiota. Spearman correlation was conducted to analyze the correlation between different intestinal microbiota and clinical characteristics. A microbiota-disease network diagram was constructed using the gut MDisorder database to identify the possible pathogenesis of intestinal microorganisms affecting COPD, screen for potential treatment, and guide future research. Results No significant difference in biodiversity was shown between the two groups but significant differences in microbial community structure. Fifteen genera of bacteria with large abundance differences were identified, including Bacteroides, Prevotella, Lachnospira, and Parabacteroides. Among them, the relative abundance of Lachnospira and Coprococcus was negatively related to the smoking index and positively related to lung function results. By contrast, the relative abundance of Parabacteroides was positively correlated with the smoking index and negatively correlated with lung function findings. Random forest classification showed that Lachnospira was the genus most capable of distinguishing between patients with COPD and healthy individuals suggesting it may be a potential biomarker of COPD. A Lachnospira disease network diagram suggested that Lachnospira decreased in some diseases, such as asthma, diabetes mellitus, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and increased in other diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome, hypertension, and bovine lichen. Conclusion The dominant intestinal microbiota with significant differences is related to the clinical characteristics of COPD, and the Lachnospira has the potential value to identify COPD.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of defective pear fermentation (DPF) diets on growth performance and gastrointestinal microbial communities in 60 healthy male small-tailed Han sheep, aged 90 days. The sheep were randomly divided into four groups, each consisting of three replicates with five sheep per replicate. Initially, all groups received a basal diet for seven days during the adaptation stage. Subsequently, for 60 days, group C (control) was fed a basal diet, group X received a basal diet with 2% DPF, group Y had a basal diet with 4% DPF, and group Z was fed a basal diet with 6% DPF. The results indicated that group Y experienced a significant increase in average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI). The addition of DPF significantly elevated the levels of GSH-Px and notably reduced MDA content compared to group C. Analysis of gastrointestinal microbiota showed that groups receiving DPF had increased relative abundances of Lachnospiraceae_NK3A20_group, norank_f p-2534-18B5_gut_group, Acetitomaculum, Actinobacteriota, Bacteroidota and Ruminococcus_gauvreauii_group, and decreased abundances of Proteobacteria, Prevotella, Staphylococcus, and Psychrobacter compared to group C. Group X exhibited the highest relative abundance of Olsenella, while group Y showed a significant increase in unclassified_f Lachnospiraceae compared to the other groups. Bacterial function prediction indicated that pathways related to energy metabolism were more prevalent in group X and Y. This study preliminarily confirms the feasibility of using DPF as feed additives, providing a foundation for further research and evaluation of DPF's application in animal production.

Abstract
Background Recent studies have shed light on the potential role of gut dysbiosis in shaping traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes. Changes in the levels and types of Lactobacillus bacteria present might impact the immune system disturbances, neuroinflammatory responses, anxiety and depressive-like behaviors, and compromised neuroprotection mechanisms triggered by TBI. Objective This study aimed to investigate the effects of a daily pan-probiotic (PP) mixture in drinking water containing strains of Lactobacillus plantarum, L. reuteri, L. helveticus, L. fermentum, L. rhamnosus, L. gasseri, and L. casei, administered for either two or seven weeks before inducing TBI on both male and female mice. Methods Mice were subjected to controlled cortical impact (CCI) injury. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) analysis was performed for metabolite measurements. The taxonomic profiles of murine fecal samples were evaluated using 16S rRNA V1-V3 sequencing analysis. Histological analyses were used to assess neuroinflammation and gut changes post-TBI, while behavioral tests were conducted to evaluate sensorimotor and cognitive functions. Results Our findings suggest that PP administration modulates the diversity and composition of the microbiome and increases the levels of SCFAs in a sex-dependent manner. We also observed a reduction of lesion volume, cell death, and microglial and macrophage activation after PP treatment following TBI in male mice. Furthermore, PP-treated mice show motor function improvements and decreases in anxiety and depressive-like behaviors. Conclusion Our findings suggest that PP administration can mitigate neuroinflammation and ameliorate motor and anxiety and depressive-like behavior deficits following TBI. These results underscore the potential of probiotic interventions as a viable therapeutic strategy to address TBI-induced impairments, emphasizing the need for gender-specific treatment approaches.

Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a multifactorial sleep disorder with a high prevalence in the general population. OSA is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), particularly hypertension, and is linked to worse outcomes. Although the correlation between OSA and CVDs is firmly established, the mechanisms are poorly understood. Continuous positive airway pressure is primary treatment for OSA reducing cardiovascular risk effectively, while is limited by inadequate compliance. Moreover, alternative treatments for cardiovascular complications in OSA are currently not available. Recently, there has been considerable attention on the significant correlation between gut microbiome and pathophysiological changes in OSA. Furthermore, gut microbiome has a significant impact on the cardiovascular complications that arise from OSA. Nevertheless, a detailed understanding of this association is lacking. This review examines recent advancements to clarify the link between the gut microbiome, OSA, and OSA-related CVDs, with a specific focus on hypertension, and also explores potential health advantages of adjuvant therapy that targets the gut microbiome in OSA.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the prebiotic properties of the almond polysaccharide AP-1 on intestinal microorganisms by using an in vitro fecal fermentation method and its anti-inflammatory effect on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells. The results showed that during the in vitro fermentation of AP-1, the pH value of the fermentation broth decreased obviously, while the concentration of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) increased significantly, especially acetic acid and butyric acid. In genus level, the number of Clostridium and Megamonas increased markedly in the AP-1 group after 24 h of fermentation. After 48 h of fermentation, there was a noticeable increase in the number of beneficial genera Lactobacillaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae, and a considerable decrease in the number of pro-inflammatory genera. In addition, we found that AP-1 had no toxic effect on RAW264.7 cells. In the LPS-induced inflammation model of RAW264.7 cells, AP-1 could effectively inhibit the release of NO, regulate the level of reactive oxides (ROS), and effectively down-regulate the mRNA expression of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and iNOS. In conclusion, the almond polysaccharide AP-1 may be a functional active substance aimed at promoting intestinal health and exerting anti-inflammatory effects.

Abstract
Ellagic acid (EA) is an abundant dietary polyphenol with multifarious health benefits but low bioavailability. To increase its bio-efficacy, converting EA to urolithins by supplementing urolithin-producing bacteria, e.g., Gordonibacter urolithinfaciens (G.uro), could be a solution. This work first tested three methods for oral delivery of live G.uro. Intestinal colonization of G.uro and its impact on local gut microbiota, EA-to-urolithin conversion and bioavailability were then investigated in C57BL/6J mice administered to EA only or a synbiotic (G. uro + EA). In vitro results suggested that G.uro largely survived simulated gastrointestinal digestion and could be administered without protection. In vivo results showed that G.uro had little impact on local gut microbiota but could not colonize the gut. Moreover, synbiotic remarkably promoted Akkermansia, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium growth, and significantly enhanced the bioavailability of urolithins compared with the EA-only group. This study demonstrated the potential of oral supplementation of G.uro for enhancing EA-to-urolithin bioconversion and bioavailability.

Abstract
The giant panda, a strict herbivore that feeds on bamboo, still retains a typical carnivorous digestive system. Reference catalogs of microbial genes and genomes are lacking, largely limiting the antibiotic resistome and functional exploration of the giant panda gut microbiome. Here, we integrated 177 fecal metagenomes of captive and wild giant pandas to construct a giant panda integrated gene catalog (GPIGC) comprised of approximately 4.5 million non-redundant genes and reconstruct 393 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs). Taxonomic and functional characterization of genes revealed that the captivity of the giant panda significantly changed the core microbial composition and the distribution of microbial genes. Higher abundance and prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were detected in the guts of captive giant pandas, and ARG distribution was influenced by geography, for both captive and wild individuals. Escherichia, as the prevalent genus in the guts of captive giant pandas, was the main carrier of ARGs, meaning there is a high risk of ARG transmission by Escherichia. We also found that multiple mcr gene variants, conferring plasmid-mediated mobile colistin resistance, were widespread in the guts of captive and wild giant pandas. There were low proportions of carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZyme) genes in GPIGC and MAGs compared with several omnivorous and herbivorous mammals. Many members of Clostridium MAGs were significantly enriched in the guts of adult, old and wild giant pandas. The genomes of isolates and MAGs of Clostridiaceae harbored key genes or enzymes in complete pathways for degrading lignocellulose and producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), indicating the potential of these bacteria to utilize the low-nutrient bamboo diet. Overall, our data presented an exhaustive reference gene catalog and MAGs in giant panda gut and provided a comprehensive understanding of the antibiotic resistome and microbial adaptability for a high-lignocellulose diet.
