Abstract
A growing body of research has identified circadian-rhythm disruption as a risk factor for metabolic health. However, the underlying biological basis remains complex, and complete molecular mechanisms are unknown. There is emerging evidence from animal and human research to suggest that the expression of core circadian genes, such as circadian locomotor output cycles kaput gene (CLOCK), brain and muscle ARNT-Like 1 gene (BMAL1), period (PER), and cyptochrome (CRY), and the consequent expression of hundreds of circadian output genes are integral to the regulation of cellular metabolism. These circadian mechanisms represent potential pathophysiological pathways linking circadian disruption to adverse metabolic health outcomes, including obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. Here, we aim to summarize select evidence from in vivo animal models and compare these results with epidemiologic research findings to advance understanding of existing foundational evidence and potential mechanistic links between circadian disruption and altered clock gene expression contributions to metabolic health-related pathologies. Findings have important implications for the treatment, prevention, and control of metabolic pathologies underlying leading causes of death and disability, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To investigate the role of longitudinal change of sleep patterns in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). METHODS Based on UK Biobank, a total of 18 172 participants were enrolled. Five dimensions of healthy sleep including early chronotype, sleep 7-8 hours/day, free of insomnia, no snoring, and no frequent excessive daytime sleepiness were used to generate a healthy sleep score (HSS) ranging from 0 to 5. Corresponding to the HSS of 0-1, 2-3, and 4-5, the poor, intermediate, and healthy sleep patterns were defined. Based on changes in HSS across assessments 1 and 2, we calculated the absolute difference of HSS. For the change in sleep patterns, we categorized five profiles (stable healthy, worsening, stable intermediate, optimizing, and stable poor sleep patterns). The outcomes were incidence of CVD including coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. We assessed the adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) by Cox hazard models. RESULTS Compared with participants with stable poor patterns, those who improved their sleep patterns or maintained healthy sleep patterns had a 26% and 32% lower risk of CVD, respectively. Stable healthy sleep pattern was associated with a 29% and 44% reduced risk of CHD and stroke. Per unit, longitudinal increment of the HSS was related to an 8% lower risk of CVD and CHD. Compared with individuals with constant HSS, those with decreased HSS had a 13% higher risk of developing CVD. CONCLUSIONS Optimizing sleep patterns and maintaining a healthy sleep pattern may reduce the risk of CVD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the longitudinal association between social-jetlag (SJL) and obesity development among adolescents, sex-difference and related modifying factors in the association. METHODS Based on Shanghai-Adolescent-Cohort during 2017-2021, a total of 609 students were investigated. In grade 6, 7 and 9, the information on SJL was collected using questionnaires, and anthropometric measures were conducted. The fingernail cortisol and progesterone levels in grade 6 (using LC-MS/MS) and body composition in grade 9 (using Inbody-S10) were measured. By the latent-class-mixture-modeling, two trajectories for SJL (high-level vs. low-level) throughout 4 years were developed. The prospective associations of SJL trajectories and weight/fat gains were analyzed by sex and under different (high/moderate/low) cortisol/progesterone stratifications. RESULTS In grades 6-9, 39.00%-44.50 % of adolescents experienced at least 1 h of SJL. Compared with the low-level SJL trajectory, the high-level SJL trajectory was associated with greater differences in body-mass-index Z-scores and waist-to-height ratios across 4 years, higher levels of body-fat-percentage and fat-mass-index in grade 9 (P-values<0.05), and such associations were stronger among girls and under moderate-to-high (vs. low) baseline cortisol and progesterone levels. However, no significant associations among boys were observed. CONCLUSIONS High-level SJL in adolescents may be associated with the development of obesity, especially among adolescent girls and under relatively high baseline cortisol and progesterone levels.

Abstract
Evening chronotype is known to be associated with various chronic diseases and cardiovascular risk factors. Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that together raise the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other serious health problems. Only a few studies have been published on the association between chronotype and metabolic syndrome in unselected population data, with conflicting results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between chronotype and metabolic syndrome at population level by using unselected Northern Finland Birth cohort 1966 (NFBC1966) database. The study population consists of participants with NFBC66 (n = 5,113, 57% female) at the age of 46 yr old. Chronotype was determined with shortened Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaires and expressed as morning (44%), intermediate (44%), and evening types (12%). Metabolic syndrome was determined according to the definition of International Diabetes Federation. One-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Walli's test, and χ2 tests were used to compare the chronotype groups, followed by logistic regression analysis (adjusted with alcohol consumption, smoking, marital status, level of education, and leisure-time physical activity). In women, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was statistically significantly higher in the evening type group: 23, 24, and 34% for morning, intermediate, and evening groups, respectively (P < 0.001). In logistic regression analysis, evening chronotype was associated with higher risk of having metabolic syndrome (OR 1.5; CI 95% 1.2 to 2.0). In this population-based birth cohort study, the evening chronotype was independently associated with higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome in women.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Only a few studies have been conducted on the association between chronotype and metabolic syndrome in unselected population data, with conflicting results. In this population-based cohort study of 5,113 participants, the evening chronotype associated with metabolic syndrome in women when there was no such association in men. The result supports a previous South Korean population study of 1,620 participants, in which the association was also found in women, but not in men.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a global health concern. Circadian medicine improves cardiovascular care by aligning treatments with our body's daily rhythms and their underlying cellular circadian mechanisms. Time-based therapies, or chronotherapies, show special promise in clinical cardiology. They optimize treatment schedules for better outcomes with fewer side effects by recognizing the profound influence of rhythmic body cycles. In this review, we focus on three chronotherapy areas (medication, light, and meal timing) with potential to enhance cardiovascular care. We also highlight pioneering research in the new field of rest, the gut microbiome, novel chronotherapies for hypertension, pain management, and small molecules that targeting the circadian mechanism.

Abstract
We aim to examine the association of sleep duration, sleep quality, late chronotype, and circadian misalignment with glycemic control and risk of complications in young adults with youth-onset type 2 diabetes followed in the Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY) study. Self-reported sleep duration, quality, timing, and circadian misalignment were assessed via a modified Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, and chronotype was assessed via the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). We examined diabetes complications including loss of glycemic control (defined as hemoglobin A1c ≥8%), hypertension, dyslipidemia, albuminuria, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Multivariable logistic regression models were constructed to assess associations between sleep and circadian measures with outcomes of interest, such as loss of glycemic control and diabetes complications. A total of 421 participants (34.2% male), mean age 23.6 ± 2.5 yr, mean body mass index (BMI) of 36.1 ± 8.3 kg/m2, and mean diabetes duration of 10.0 ± 1.5 yr were evaluated. Self-reported short sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, and sleep quality were not associated with loss of glycemic control or diabetes complications. Late self-reported bedtime (after midnight) on work/school nights, rather than self-expressed chronotype or circadian misalignment, was independently associated with loss of glycemic control. An association was seen between late bedtimes and albuminuria but was attenuated after adjusting for depression. In conclusion, late bedtime on work/school days, rather than short sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, or poor sleep quality, was independently associated with loss of glycemic control in this longitudinal cohort of young adults with youth-onset type 2 diabetes.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in youth is increasing at an alarming rate. Identifying potentially modifiable factors modulating glycemic control is critically important to reduce micro and macrovascular complications. In a large cohort of youth-onset type 2 diabetes, self-reported late bedtime on work/school days was independently associated with loss of glycemic control in this longitudinal cohort of young adults with youth-onset type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) constitute a public health problem. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether sleep disorders, school jet lag, and anxiety are associated with TDI in schoolchildren 8-10 years of age. METHODS An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted with 739 pairs of parents/guardians and children enrolled in public and private schools. The parents/guardians answered a socioeconomic questionnaire, the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children, Circadian Energy Scale, and Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale. Four examiners underwent calibration exercises for the diagnosis of TDI (K > 0.80) using the criteria proposed by Andreasen (2007). A directed acyclic graph was used for the formulation of the theoretical model and statistical adjustments. Unadjusted and adjusted robust binary logistic regression analyses were performed (α = 5%). RESULTS The prevalence of TDI was 16.2%. The following variables remained associated with the outcome in the final model: family income less than or equal to the minimum monthly wage (OR = 1.77; 95% CI: 1.09-2.88; p = .02), child's height >137.6 cm (OR = 1.68; 95% CI: 1.06-2.64; p = .02), the occurrence of school jet lag (OR = 2.12; 95% CI: 1.27-3.53; p = .004), anxiety (OR = 1.77; 95% CI: 1.04-3.00; p = .04) and sleep disorders (OR = 1.63; 95% CI: 1.38-1.93; p = .05). CONCLUSION Children from families with a lower income, taller children, those with school jet lag, those with anxiety and those with sleep disorders had a greater occurrence of TDI.

Abstract
PURPOSE Suicide and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) are preventable concerns in young people. Suicidal ideation (SI), suicidal plans (SP) and suicidal attempt (SA) are closely related to death. Sleep problems are known risk factors for suicide and NSSI. This study aimed to explore the relationship between sleep, suicidality and NSSI. METHODS Participants were 3,828 middle school and college students aged 11-23 years from urban and rural areas of Henan Province. Sleep, suicidal phenomena and NSSI were assessed by applying self-reported questionnaires. Chi-squared tests were utilized to demonstrate the demographic data and sleep variables. The correlation between sleep, suicidality and NSSI were explored by using binary logistic regression, while adjusting socio-demographic characteristics with multivariate models. RESULTS Sleep variables except mid-sleep time were related to suicidal phenomena (P < 0.05). Greater social jet lag (SJL) [≥ 2 h (h)] was associated with increased risk of SI [Odds ratios (OR) = 1.72, 95% confidence intervals (CI):1.40-2.11], SP (OR = 2.10, 95%CI:1.59-2.79) and SA (OR = 1.50, 95%CI:1.00-2.26). Non-only child participants with SJL (≥ 2 h) had significantly increased odds of SI (OR = 1.75, 95%CI: 1.41-2.18) and SP (OR = 2.25, 95%CI: 1.66-3.05). Eveningness chronotype had the strongest correlation with SI (OR = 3.87, 95%CI:2.78-5.38), SP (OR = 4.72, 95%CI:2.97-7.50), SA (OR = 6.69, 95%CI:3.08-14.52) and NSSI (OR = 1.39, 95%CI:1.02-1.90). CONCLUSION Overlong or short sleep duration, SJL, eveningness chronotype and other sleep abnormalities (e.g., daytime dysfunction, low sleep efficiency) were associated with a higher prevalence of SI, SP and SA. Additionally, eveningness was significantly correlated with NSSI among young people. These findings suggested the importance of assessing and intervening in sleep habits to prevent suicide and NSSI in young people.

Abstract
The menstrual cycle is a loop involving the interplay of different organs and hormones, with the capacity to impact numerous physiological processes, including body temperature and heart rate, which in turn display menstrual rhythms. The advent of wearable devices that can continuously track physiological data opens the possibility of using these prolonged time series of skin temperature data to noninvasively detect the temperature variations that occur in ovulatory menstrual cycles. Here, we show that the menstrual skin temperature variation is better represented by a model of oscillation, the cosinor, than by a biphasic square wave model. We describe how applying a cosinor model to a menstrual cycle of distal skin temperature data can be used to assess whether the data oscillate or not, and in cases of oscillation, rhythm metrics for the cycle, including mesor, amplitude, and acrophase, can be obtained. We apply the method to wearable temperature data collected at a minute resolution each day from 120 female individuals over a menstrual cycle to illustrate how the method can be used to derive and present menstrual cycle characteristics, which can be used in other analyses examining indicators of female health. The cosinor method, frequently used in circadian rhythms studies, can be employed in research to facilitate the assessment of menstrual cycle effects on physiological parameters, and in clinical settings to use the characteristics of the menstrual cycles as health markers or to facilitate menstrual chronotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study examines the association between traditional cardiovascular health (CVH) metrics and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) incidence in individuals with diverse sleep patterns. METHODS AND RESULTS We analyzed data from 208 621 participants initially free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the UK Biobank study. Sleep patterns were assessed using scores for chronotype, duration, insomnia, snoring, and daytime dozing. Traditional CVH scores were derived from the Life's Simple 7 metrics. Cox proportional hazards multivariate regression assessed associations between distinct combinations of CVH and sleep scores and MACE, including nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, and CVD mortality. Over a mean follow-up of 12.73 years, 9253 participants experienced incident MACE. Individuals with both a healthy sleep pattern and ideal CVH levels had the lowest MACE risk compared with those with a poor sleep pattern and poor CVH levels (hazard ratio, 0.306 [95% CI, 0.257-0.365]; P<0.001). Elevated CVH scores were associated with a reduced risk of MACE across different sleep patterns. Similar trends were observed for individual MACE components, heart failure, and all-cause mortality. These findings remained robust in sensitivity analyses and across various subgroups. CONCLUSIONS In individuals without known CVD, maintaining a favorable sleep pattern and achieving optimal CVH levels, as measured by traditional metrics, were associated with the lowest MACE risk. Enhanced CVH significantly reduced CVD risk, even in individuals with a poor sleep pattern. These results emphasize the importance of considering multiple dimensions of sleep health alongside CVH to mitigate CVD risk. REGISTRATION URL: https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk; Unique identifier: 91090.

Abstract
Adolescent sleep disturbances and circadian delays pose significant challenges to mood and daytime functioning. In this narrative review, we explore the impact of light on sleep and highlight the importance of monitoring and managing light exposure in adolescents throughout the day and night. The benefits of daylight exposure in mitigating sleep and circadian disruptions are well-established; however, interventions targeting access to daylight in adolescents remain understudied and underutilized. The primary aim of this narrative review is to bring attention to this gap in the literature and propose the need for institutional-level interventions that promote access to daylight, especially considering adolescents' early school start times and substantial time spent indoors on weekdays. School-led interventions, such as active commuting to school and outdoor curriculums, have promising effects on sleep and circadian rhythms. Additionally, practical measures to optimize natural light in classrooms, including managing blinds and designing conducive environments, should also be considered. While future studies are necessary to facilitate the implementation of interventions, the potential for these school-level interventions to support adolescent sleep health is evident. Aiming for integration of individual-level regulation and institutional-level intervention of light exposure is necessary for optimal outcomes.

Abstract
Chronotype, an individual's preferred sleep-wake timing, is influenced by sex and age. Men sometimes report a later chronotype than women and older age is associated with earlier chronotype. The sex-related changes in chronotype coincide with puberty and menopause. However, the effects of sex hormones on human chronotype remain unclear. To examine the impact of 3 months of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) on chronotype in transgender persons, this study used data from 93 participants from the prospective RESTED cohort, including 49 transmasculine (TM) participants starting testosterone and 44 transfeminine (TF) participants starting estrogens and antiandrogens. Midpoint of sleep and sleep duration were measured using the ultra-short Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (µMCTQ). After 3 months of GAHT, TM participants' midpoint of sleep increased by 24 minutes (95% CI: 3 to 45), whereas TF participants' midpoint of sleep decreased by 21 minutes (95% CI: -38 to -4). Total sleep duration did not change significantly in either group. This study provides the first prospective assessment of sex hormone use and chronotype in transgender persons, showing that GAHT can change chronotype in line with cisgender sex differences. These findings provide a basis for future studies on biological mechanisms and clinical consequences of chronotype changes.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The regular practice of physical activity is a crucial factor for healthy aging and for controlling and preventing chronic diseases. To assess the effects of regular physical activity on the biochemical and inflammatory profiles, as well as the quality of life of older adults diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Participants (aged 55-70 years; living in the Balearic Islands, Spain) were divided into two groups (n = 50 each) according to the degree of physical activity measured by metabolic equivalents of task (METs). Anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, biochemical and hematological parameters, and inflammatory biomarkers were measured. Beck Depression Inventory and adherence to the Mediterranean diet questionnaires, as well as the Dietary Inflammatory Index, chair test, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity, were also determined. The characterization of the patients was similar in both groups, showing a homogeneous sample. The group with the highest METs experienced a decrease in depression and an increase in the intensity of physical activity. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet and HRQoL physical dimensions increased in participants with the highest METs, also showing a decrease in glycemia and glycosylated hemoglobin values. Inflammatory biomarkers, including tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6, interleukin-1β, and osteoprotegerin, decreased in patients practicing more physical activity. High levels of physical activity are related to a healthier lifestyle, characterized by high adherence to the Mediterranean diet, decreased depressive behavior, oxidative stress, and inflammatory status in older people with metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Social jet lag (SJL) is a misalignment between sleep and wake times on workdays and free days. SJL leads to chronic circadian rhythm disruption and may affect nearly 70% of the general population, leading to increased risk for cardiometabolic diseases. This study investigated the effects of SJL on metabolic health, exercise performance, and exercise-induced skeletal muscle adaptations in mice. Ten-week-old C57BL/6J mice (n = 40) were allocated to four groups: control sedentary (CON-SED), control exercise (CON-EX), social jet lag sedentary (SJL-SED), and social jet lag exercise (SJL-EX). CON mice were housed under a 12:12-h light-dark cycle. SJL was simulated by implementing a 4-h phase delay for 3 days to simulate "weekends," followed by a 4-h phase advance back to "weekdays," for 6 wk. EX mice had free access to a running wheel. Graded exercise tests (GXTs) and glucose tolerance tests (GTTs) were performed at baseline and after intervention to monitor the effects of exercise and social jet lag on cardiorespiratory and metabolic health, respectively. SJL led to alterations in activity and running patterns and clock gene expression in skeletal muscle and decreased average running distance (P < 0.05). SJL-SED mice gained significantly more weight compared with CON-SED and SJL-EX mice (P < 0.01). SJL impaired fasting blood glucose and glucose tolerance compared with CON mice (P < 0.05), which was partially restored by exercise in SJL-EX mice. SJL also blunted improvements in exercise performance and mitochondrial content in the quadriceps. These data suggest that SJL blunted some cardiometabolic adaptations to exercise and that proper circadian hygiene is necessary for maintaining health and performance.NEW & NOTEWORTHY In mice, disrupting circadian rhythms with social jet lag for 6 wk caused significant weight gain, higher fasting blood glucose, and impaired glucose tolerance compared with control. Voluntary exercise in mice experiencing social jet lag prevented weight gain, though the mice still experienced increased fasting blood glucose and impaired exercise performance compared with trained mice not experiencing social jet lag. Social jet lag seems to be a potent circadian rhythm disruptor that impacts exercise-induced training adaptations.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study examines the impact of sleep duration, bedtime, and sleep disturbance during early childhood on the risk of cardiometabolic disorder (CMD) in early adolescence. METHODS Within the Health Outcomes and Measures of Environment Study, we examined sleep patterns of 330 children from ages 2 to 8 years and the relationship of these sleep patterns with cardiometabolic risk measures at age 12 (N = 220). We used a group-based semi-parametric mixture model to identify distinct trajectories in sleep duration, bedtime timing, and sleep disturbance for the entire sample. We then examined the associations between sleep trajectories and CMD risk measures using general linear models using both an unadjusted model (no covariates) and an adjusted model (adjusting for child pubertal stage, child sex, duration of breastfeeding, household income, maternal education, and maternal serum cotinine). RESULTS In the unadjusted and adjusted models, we found significant differences in CMD risk scores by trajectories of sleep disturbance. Children in the "high" disturbance trajectory had higher CMD risk scores than those in the 'low' disturbance trajectory (p's = 0.002 and 0.039, respectively). No significant differences in CMD risk were observed for bedtime timing or total sleep time trajectories in the unadjusted or adjusted models. CONCLUSIONS In this cohort, caregiver-reported sleep disturbance in early childhood was associated with more adverse cardiometabolic profiles in early adolescence. Our findings suggest that trials to reduce CMD risk via sleep interventions-which have been conducted in adolescents and adults-may be implemented too late.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetic individuals often encounter various sleep-related challenges. Although the association between sleep duration and atrial fibrillation (AF) have been explored, the association of other sleep traits with the incidence of AF remains unclear. A comprehensive understanding of these traits is essential for a more accurate assessment of sleep conditions in patients with diabetes and the development of novel AF prevention strategies. METHODS This study involved 23,785 patients with diabetes without any pre-existing cardiovascular disease, drawn from the UK Biobank. Sleep behaviour traits examined encompassed sleep duration, chronotype, insomnia, snoring and daytime sleepiness. Sleep duration was categorised into three groups: low (≤ 5 h), proper (6-8 h) and long (≥ 9 h). We assessed associations using multivariate Cox proportional risk regression models. Furthermore, four poor sleep behaviours were constructed to evaluate their impact on the risk of new-onset AF. RESULTS Over a mean follow-up period of 166 months, 2221 (9.3%) new cases of AF were identified. Short (hazard ratio (HR), 1.28; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.10-1.50) and long sleep durations (HR 1.16; 95% CI 1.03-1.32) consistently exhibited an elevated risk of AF compared to optimal sleep duration. Early chronotype, infrequent insomnia and daytime sleepiness were associated with 11% (HR 0.89; 95% CI 0.82-0.97), 15% (HR 0.85; 95% CI 0.77-0.95) and 12% (HR 0.88; 95% CI 0.81-0.96) reduced risk of new-onset AF, respectively. However, no significant association was found between snoring and the incidence of AF (HR 0.99; 95% CI 0.91-1.07). CONCLUSIONS In diabetic populations, sleep duration, chronotype, insomnia and daytime sleepiness are strongly associated with AF incidence. An optimal sleep duration of 6-8 h presents the lowest AF risk compared to short or long sleep duration. Additionally, poor sleep patterns present a greater risk of new-onset AF in women than in men.

Abstract
Sleep regularity and chronotype can affect health, performance, and overall well-being. This observational study examines how sleep regularity and chronotype affect sleep quality and cardiorespiratory metrics. Data was collected from 1 January 2019 through 30 December 2019 from over 330 000 Sleep Number smart bed users across the United States who opted into this at-home study. A pressure signal from the smart bed reflected bed presence, movements, heart rate (HR), and breathing rate (BR). Participants (mean age: 55.69 years [SD: 14.0]; 51.2% female) were categorized by chronotype (16.8% early; 62.2% intermediate, 20.9% late) and regularity of sleep timing. Participants who were regular sleepers (66.1%) experienced higher percent restful sleep and lower mean HR and BR compared to the 4.8% categorized as irregular sleepers. Regular early-chronotype participants displayed better sleep and cardiorespiratory parameters compared to those with regular late-chronotypes. Significant variations were noted in sleep duration (Cohen's d = 1.54 and 0.88, respectively) and restful sleep (Cohen's d = 1.46 and 0.82, respectively) between early and late chronotypes, particularly within regular and irregular sleep patterns. This study highlights how sleep regularity and chronotype influence sleep quality and cardiorespiratory metrics. Irrespective of chronotype, sleep regularity demonstrated a substantial effect. Further research is necessary to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social jetlag is a circadian misalignment that arises from a discrepancy between activity/sleep schedules on school/work days and free days. This study explored the correlation between social jetlag and self-rated health (SRH) in a representative sample of Korea. METHODS This study included 8259 working population in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2016-2018. Social jetlag was calculated as the difference between the midpoint of sleep time on work day and work-free day. Five-point Likert scale of SRH was used to assess subjective health perception on general health conditions. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) for poor SRH in the 1-2 h or longer than 2 h social jetlag groups compared to that in the reference group (less than 1 h), after adjusting for age, sex, marital status, occupation, household income, and weekly working hours. RESULTS The proportions of those with <1 h, 1-2 h, >2 h of social jetlag were 63.80 %, 25.67 %, and 10.53 %, respectively. The risk of poor SRH increased as social jetlag increased. Greater social jetlag was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of reporting poor SRH. The adjusted ORs for the groups with social jetlag between 1 and <2 h, and >2 h were 1.100 (95 % CI = 0.935-1.295), and 1.503 (95 % CI = 1.097-1.727), respectively. Moreover, the OR trend was statistically significant (p for trend = 0.008). CONCLUSION This study found that social jetlag and poor SRH were significantly related in the Korean working population.

Abstract
Changes in circadian rhythms have been observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and evidence suggests that these changes can have a negative impact on health. This study aimed to investigate the existence of hemodialysis-induced chronodisruption, the chronotype distribution, and their association with sleep quality and quality of life (QoL). This was a cross-sectional study that enrolled 165 patients (mean age: 51.1 ± 12.5 y, 60.6% male) undergoing hemodialysis from three local units. The following instruments were used: the Morning-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ); a modified version of the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCQT) to estimate hemodialysis-induced chronodisruption (HIC); the Kidney Disease QoL Short Form (KDQOL-SF); the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS); the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the 10-Cognitive Screener (10-CS). HIC was present in 40.6% of CKD patients. Morning chronotype was prevalent in CKD patients (69%) compared to evening-type (17.1%) and significantly different from a paired sample from the general population (p < 0.001). HIC and chronotype were associated with different domains of QoL but not with sleep quality. This study suggests that there is a HIC and that morning chronotype is associated with CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis, with implications for QoL.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Although insufficient sleep is a risk factor for metabolic syndrome (MetS), the circadian timing of sleep (CTS) is also involved in cardiac and metabolic regulation. We examined whether delays and deviations in the sleep midpoint (SM), a measure of CTS, modify the association between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and MetS in adolescents. METHODS We evaluated 277 adolescents (median 16 years) who had at least 5 nights of at-home actigraphy (ACT), in-lab polysomnography (PSG), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan, and MetS score data. Sleep midpoint (SM), sleep irregularity (SI), and social jetlag (SJL) were examined as effect modifiers of the association between VAT and MetS, including waist circumference, blood pressure, insulin resistance, triglycerides, and cholesterol. Linear regression models adjusted for demographics, ACT-sleep duration, ACT-sleep variability, and PSG-apnea-hypopnea index. RESULTS The association between VAT and MetS was significantly stronger (p-values for interactions < 0.001) among adolescents with a schooldays SM later than 4:00 (2.66 [0.30] points increase in MetS score), a SI higher than 1 hour (2.49 [0.30]) or a SJL greater than 1.5 hours (2.15 [0.36]), than in those with an earlier SM (<3:00; 1.76 [0.28]), lower SI (<30 minutes; 0.98 [0.70]), or optimal SJL (<30 minutes; 1.08 [0.45]). CONCLUSIONS A delayed sleep phase, an irregular sleep-wake cycle, and greater social jetlag on schooldays identified adolescents in whom VAT had a stronger association with MetS. Circadian misalignment is a risk factor that enhances the impact of visceral obesity on cardiometabolic morbidity and should be a target of preventative strategies in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore the relationship between sleep patterns and cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and mortality risk in a population with type 2 diabetes through a UK Biobank sample. METHODS A total of 6860 patients with type 2 diabetes were included in this study. Five sleep factors (including Chronotype, sleep duration, insomnia, daytime sleepiness, and snoring) were collected as a questionnaire. The calculation generates a sleep score of 0-5, and then three sleep patterns were defined based on the sleep scores: poor sleep pattern (0-2), Intermediate sleep pattern (3-4), and healthy sleep pattern (5). HRs and 95% confidence intervals were calculated by multivariate COX proportional risk model adjustment. Restricted cubic splines were used to validate linear associations between sleep scores CVD events. RESULTS Our results found a reduced risk of CVD events in individuals with healthy sleep patterns compared to participants with poor sleep patterns. CVD Mortality (HR, 0.690; 95% CI 0.519-0.916), ASCVD (Atherosclerosis CVD) (HR, 0.784; 95% CI 0.671-0.915), CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) (HR, 0.737; 95% CI 0.618-0.879), PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease) (HR, 0.612; 95% CI 0.418-0.896), Heart Failure (HR, 0.653; 95% CI 0.488-0.875). Restricted cubic spline responded to a negative linear correlation between sleep scores and CVD Mortality, ASCVD, CAD, PAD, and Heart Failure. CONCLUSIONS Healthy sleep patterns are significantly associated with a reduced risk of CVD Mortality, ASCVD, CAD, PAD, and Heart Failure in the diabetes population.

Abstract
Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is an established imaging biomarker of subclinical atherosclerosis, but its relationship to diurnal preference is not well studied. We investigated the association between chronotype and CAC in the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS) pilot cohort. Participants aged 50-64 years were randomly recruited and underwent extensive examination including imaging and accelerometry-assessed physical activity. 771 participants (47.3 % male, 57.6 ± 4.4 years) were included in this cross-sectional analysis. CAC was assessed by non-contrast computed tomography, and a CAC score > 10 was considered significant calcification. Self-assessed chronotype was classified as extreme morning, moderate morning, intermediate, moderate evening, or extreme evening. 10-year risk of first-onset cardiovascular disease was estimated by the Systemic Coronary Risk Evaluation 2 (SCORE2). Significant CAC was present in 29 % of the cohort. CAC prevalence increased from extreme morning to extreme evening type (22 %, 28 %, 29 %, 27 %, 41 % respectively, p = 0.018). In a multivariate logistic regression model controlling for confounders, extreme evening chronotype was independently associated with increased CAC prevalence compared to extreme morning type (OR 1.90, [95%CI 1.04-3.46], p = 0.037). When stratified by SCORE2 risk category (low: <5 %; moderate: 5 to <10 %; high: ≥10 %), significant CAC was most prevalent among extreme evening chronotypes in the low and moderate-risk groups, while chronotype seemed less important in the high-risk group (p = 0.011, p = 0.023, p = 0.86, respectively). Our findings suggest circadian factors may play an important role in atherosclerosis and should be considered in early cardiovascular prevention.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Misalignment between the endogenous biological timing system and behavioral activities (i.e., sleep/wake, eating, activity) contributes to adverse cardiovascular health. In this review, we discuss the effects of recurring circadian misalignment on blood pressure regulation and the implications for hypertension development. Additionally, we highlight emerging therapeutic approaches designed to mitigate the negative cardiovascular consequences elicited by circadian disruption. RECENT FINDINGS Circadian misalignment elicited by work schedules that require individuals to be awake during the biological night (i.e., shift work) alters 24-h blood pressure rhythms. Mechanistically, circadian misalignment appears to alter blood pressure via changes in autonomic nervous system balance, variations to sodium retention, dysregulation of endothelial vasodilatory responsiveness, and activation of proinflammatory mechanisms. Recurring circadian misalignment produced by a mismatch in sleep timing on free days vs. work days (i.e., social jetlag) appears to have no direct effects on prevailing blood pressure levels in healthy adults; though, circadian disruptions resulting from social jetlag may increase the risk of hypertension through enhanced sympathetic activation and/or obesity. Furthermore, social jetlag assessment may be a useful metric in shift work populations where the magnitude of circadian misalignment may be greater than in the general population. Circadian misalignment promotes unfavorable changes to 24-h blood pressure rhythms, most notably in shift working populations. While light therapy, melatonin supplementation, and the timing of drug administration may improve cardiovascular outcomes, interventions designed to target the effects of circadian misalignment on blood pressure regulation are warranted.

Abstract
The period of the year from spring to fall, when clocks in most parts of the United States are set one hour ahead of standard time, is called daylight saving time, and its beginning and ending dates and times are set by federal law. The human biological clock is regulated by the timing of light and darkness, which then dictates sleep and wake rhythms. In daily life, the timing of exposure to light is generally linked to the social clock. When the solar clock is misaligned with the social clock, desynchronization occurs between the internal circadian rhythm and the social clock. The yearly change between standard time and daylight saving time introduces this misalignment, which has been associated with risks to physical and mental health and safety, as well as risks to public health. In 2020, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) published a position statement advocating for the elimination of seasonal time changes, suggesting that evidence best supports the adoption of year-round standard time. This updated statement cites new evidence and support for permanent standard time. It is the position of the AASM that the United States should eliminate seasonal time changes in favor of permanent standard time, which aligns best with human circadian biology. Evidence supports the distinct benefits of standard time for health and safety, while also underscoring the potential harms that result from seasonal time changes to and from daylight saving time. Abstract
BACKGROUND Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), experienced in 10% to 20% of the population, has been associated with cardiovascular disease and death. However, the condition is heterogeneous and is prevalent in individuals having short and long sleep duration. We sought to clarify the relationship between sleep duration subtypes of EDS with cardiovascular outcomes, accounting for these subtypes. METHODS AND RESULTS We defined 3 sleep duration subtypes of excessive daytime sleepiness: normal (6-9 hours), short (<6 hours), and long (>9 hours), and compared these with a nonsleepy, normal-sleep-duration reference group. We analyzed their associations with incident myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke using medical records of 355 901 UK Biobank participants and performed 2-sample Mendelian randomization for each outcome. Compared with healthy sleep, long-sleep EDS was associated with an 83% increased rate of MI (hazard ratio, 1.83 [95% CI, 1.21-2.77]) during 8.2-year median follow-up, adjusting for multiple health and sociodemographic factors. Mendelian randomization analysis provided supporting evidence of a causal role for a genetic long-sleep EDS subtype in MI (inverse-variance weighted β=1.995, P=0.001). In contrast, we did not find evidence that other subtypes of EDS were associated with incident MI or any associations with stroke (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests the previous evidence linking EDS with increased cardiovascular disease risk may be primarily driven by the effect of its long-sleep subtype on higher risk of MI. Underlying mechanisms remain to be investigated but may involve sleep irregularity and circadian disruption, suggesting a need for novel interventions in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The majority of the previous research has focused on the impact of average sleep parameters on longevity. In this study, we aimed to investigate the associations of day-to-day deviations in sleep parameters with biological ages among 6052 adults participating in the 2011-2014 waves of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. METHODS Sleep parameters, including sleep duration, efficiency, midpoint, and day-to-day deviations in sleep parameters, including standard deviation of sleep duration (sleep variability), standard deviation of sleep midpoint (sleep irregularity), catch-up sleep, and social jetlag, were obtained from 4 to 7 days of 24-h accelerometer recording. We used physiological data to compute measurements of biological aging according to 3 published algorithms: PhenoAge, Klemera-Doubal method Biological Age, and homeostatic dysregulation. RESULTS After adjustment of multiple covariates, we observed that all parameters of day-to-day deviations in sleep were significantly associated with biological aging with larger sleep variability, larger sleep irregularity, more catch-up sleep, and more social jetlag linked with more advanced biological aging. The significant associations of sleep irregularity, catch-up sleep, and social jetlag with biological aging indices remained even after adjustment for sleep duration, efficiency, and midpoint. CONCLUSION In this study, we found that day-to-day deviations in sleep parameters are independently associated with biological aging in US general population. Since day-to-day deviation in sleep is a modifiable behavioral factor, our finding suggests that intervention aiming at increasing regularity in sleep patterns may be a novel approach for extending a healthy life span.

Abstract
Virtually all aspects of physiology fluctuate with respect to the time of day. This is beautifully exemplified by cardiovascular physiology, for which blood pressure and electrophysiology exhibit robust diurnal oscillations. At molecular/biochemical levels (eg, transcription, translation, signaling, metabolism), cardiovascular-relevant tissues (such as the heart) are profoundly different during the day vs the night. Unfortunately, this in turn contributes toward 24-hour rhythms in both risk of adverse event onset (eg, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction) and pathogenesis severity (eg, extent of ischemic damage). Accumulating evidence indicates that cell-autonomous timekeeping mechanisms, termed circadian clocks, temporally govern biological processes known to play critical roles in cardiovascular function/dysfunction. In this paper, a comprehensive review of our current understanding of the cardiomyocyte circadian clock during both health and disease is detailed. Unprecedented basic, translational, and epidemiologic studies support a need to implement chronobiological considerations in strategies designed for both prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this study, we explore the relationship between social jetlag (SJL), a parameter of circadian misalignment, and gut microbial composition, diet and cardiometabolic health in the ZOE PREDICT 1 cohort (NCT03479866). METHODS We assessed demographic, diet, cardiometabolic, stool metagenomics and postprandial metabolic measures (n = 1002). We used self-reported habitual sleep (n = 934) to calculate SJL (difference in mid-sleep time point of ≥ 1.5 h on week versus weekend days). We tested group differences (SJL vs no-SJL) in cardiometabolic markers and diet (ANCOVA) adjusting for sex, age, BMI, ethnicity, and socio-economic status. We performed comparisons of gut microbial composition using machine learning and association analyses on the species level genome bins present in at least 20% of the samples. RESULTS The SJL group (16%, n = 145) had a greater proportion of males (39% vs 25%), shorter sleepers (average sleep < 7 h; 5% vs 3%), and were younger (38.4 ± 11.3y vs 46.8 ± 11.7y) compared to the no-SJL group. SJL was associated with a higher relative abundance of 9 gut bacteria and lower abundance of 8 gut bacteria (q < 0.2 and absolute Cohen's effect size > 0.2), in part mediated by diet. SJL was associated with unfavourable diet quality (less healthful Plant-based Diet Index), higher intakes of potatoes and sugar-sweetened beverages, and lower intakes of fruits, and nuts, and slightly higher markers of inflammation (GlycA and IL-6) compared with no-SJL (P < 0.05 adjusted for covariates); rendered non-significant after multiple testing adjustments. CONCLUSIONS Novel associations between SJL and a more disadvantageous gut microbiome in a cohort of predominantly adequate sleepers highlight the potential implications of SJL for health.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Rest-activity rhythms (RAR) may mark development, aging, and physical and mental health. Understanding how they differ between people may inform intervention and health promotion efforts. However, RAR characteristics across the lifespan have not been well-studied. Therefore, we investigated the association between RAR measures with demographic and lifestyle factors in a US nationally representative study. METHODS RAR metrics of interdaily stability (IS), intradaily variability (IV), relative amplitude (RA), and mean amplitude and timing of high (M10) and low (L5) activity were derived from 2011 to 2012 and 2013 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) actigraphy data. Population-weighted linear and logistic regression models were fit to examine the associations of age, gender, smoking, alcohol, season, body mass index (BMI), income-to-poverty ratio, and race/ethnicity with RAR. Significance was based on a false-discovery rate-corrected P-value of <0.05. RESULTS Among n = 12 526 NHANES participants (3-≥80 years), IS (higher = greater day-to-day regularity) and RA (higher = greater rhythm strength) generally decreased with age and were lower among males, whereas IV (higher = greater rhythm fragmentation) increased with age (p < 0.05). Dynamic changes in RAR trajectories were observed during childhood and adolescence. Income, BMI, smoking, and alcohol use were associated with RAR metrics, as well as season among children and teenagers (p < 0.05). RAR also differed by race/ethnicity (p < 0.05), with trajectories initially diverging in childhood and continuing into adulthood. CONCLUSIONS RAR differed by demographic and health-related factors, representing possible windows for public health intervention and sleep health promotion. RAR differences by race/ethnicity begin in childhood, are evident in early adolescence, and persist throughout adulthood.

Abstract
AIMS To examine the association of a healthy sleep pattern with the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events among patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS AND RESULTS This prospective cohort study included 21 193 individuals with CHD from the UK Biobank. A healthy sleep score was generated based on a combination of chronotype, sleep duration, insomnia, and excessive daytime sleepiness. Cox proportional hazards regression models were applied to estimate the associations between healthy sleep score and recurrent cardiovascular events. During a median of 11.1 years of follow up, we documented 3771 recurrent cardiovascular events, including 1634 heart failure cases and 704 stroke cases. After multivariable adjustment, including lifestyle factors, medical history, and CHD duration, sleep 7-8 h/day, never/rarely insomnia, and no frequent daytime sleepiness were each significantly associated with a 12-22% lower risk of heart failure. In addition, compared with participants who had a healthy sleep score of 0-1, the multivariable-adjusted HR (95% CI) for participants with a healthy sleep score of 4 was 0.86 (0.75, 0.99) for recurrent cardiovascular events, 0.71 (0.57, 0.89) for heart failure, and 0.72 (0.51, 1.03) for stroke. CONCLUSIONS Adherence to a healthy sleep pattern was significantly associated with a lower risk of recurrent cardiovascular events among patients with CHD, especially for heart failure. These findings indicate that healthy sleep behaviours could be beneficial in the prevention of cardiovascular event recurrence.

Abstract
Sleep changes predate shifts in mood/affect, thought processing, mental and physical health, civic engagement, and contextual circumstances, among other things. Theory predicts that these changes may lead to shifts in political and social beliefs. Do sleep disruptions shape how individuals see the world, the people around them, and themselves in relation to others? In this article, we use daily survey data from the 77 waves (N ≈ 460,000) of the University of California, Los Angeles's 2019-2021 Nationscape Survey-a nationally representative political survey-to examine the effect of an exogenous short-term sleep disruption on measures of political views, polarization, and discriminatory beliefs. Using this data set, we leverage the modest sleep disruption that occurs at the start (and end) of Daylight Saving Time (DST) and employ a regression discontinuity in time design around the precise DST cutoff (which we supplement with event study models). Despite strong theoretical expectations and correlational connection between measures of sleep and many outcomes related to social fragmentation, we find that the DST change has little to no causal effect on citizens' levels of polarization or their discriminatory attitudes. These effects are precise enough to rule out small effects, robust to a host of specification checks, and consistent across potential subgroups of interest. Our work adds to a small but growing body of research on the social and political effects of sleep disruptions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of evening chronotype with cardiometabolic disease has been well established. However, the extent to which circadian rhythm disturbances independently result in risk remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the cross-sectional and prospective longitudinal associations between chronotype and cardiometabolic risk among Chinese young adults. METHODS From April to May 2019, a total of 1 135 young adults were selected to complete the self-administered questionnaire, and 744 fasting blood samples were collected to quantify cardiometabolic parameters. From April to May 2021, 340 fasting blood samples were collected to quantify cardiometabolic parameters. The Morning and Evening Questionnaire 5 (MEQ-5) was used to assess chronotype. The cardiometabolic (CM)-risk score was the sum of standardized Z scores based on gender for the 5 indicators: waist circumference (WC), mean arterial pressure (MAP), triglyceride (TG), homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), where the HDL-C is multiplied by-1. The generalized linear model was used to determine the cross-sectional and prospective longitudinal associations between chronotype and each cardiometabolic parameter. RESULTS Cross-sectional association analysis showed that lower MEQ-5 scores were correlated with higher fasting insulin (β=-1.420, 95%CI: -2.386~-0.453), higher HOMA-IR (β=-0.301, 95%CI: -0.507~-0.095), and higher CM risk score (β=-0.063, 95%CI: -0.122~-0.003), even after adjustment for covariates. Prospective longitudinal association analysis also showed that lower MEQ-5 scores were associated with 2 years later higher fasting glucose (β=-0.018, 95%CI: -0.034~-0.003), higher fasting insulin (β=-0.384, 95%CI: -0.766~-0.003), higher HOMA-IR (β=-0.089, 95%CI: -0.176~-0.002), and higher CM-risk score (β=-0.109, 95%CI: -0.214~-0.003) after adjustment for covariates. CONCLUSIONS Evening chronotype was significantly correlated with higher CM risk among young adults. Our findings suggest that biologically and socially affected sleep timing misalignment is a contributing factor to cardiovascular disease risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have investigated the joint effects of sleep traits on the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). No previous study has used factorial Mendelian randomization (MR) which may reduce confounding, reverse causation, and measurement error. Thus, it is prudent to study joint effects using robust methods to propose sleep-targeted interventions which lower the risk of AMI. METHODS The causal interplay between combinations of two sleep traits (including insomnia symptoms, sleep duration, or chronotype) on the risk of AMI was investigated using factorial MR. Genetic risk scores for each sleep trait were dichotomized at their median in UK Biobank (UKBB) and the second survey of the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT2). A combination of two sleep traits constituting 4 groups were analyzed to estimate the risk of AMI in each group using a 2×2 factorial MR design. RESULTS In UKBB, participants with high genetic risk for both insomnia symptoms and short sleep had the highest risk of AMI (hazard ratio (HR) 1.10; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03, 1.18), although there was no evidence of interaction (relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) 0.03; 95% CI -0.07, 0.12). These estimates were less precise in HUNT2 (HR 1.02; 95% CI 0.93, 1.13), possibly due to weak instruments and/or small sample size. Participants with high genetic risk for both a morning chronotype and insomnia symptoms (HR 1.09; 95% CI 1.03, 1.17) and a morning chronotype and short sleep (HR 1.11; 95% CI 1.04, 1.19) had the highest risk of AMI in UKBB, although there was no evidence of interaction (RERI 0.03; 95% CI -0.06, 0.12; and RERI 0.05; 95% CI -0.05, 0.14, respectively). Chronotype was not available in HUNT2. CONCLUSIONS This study reveals no interaction effects between sleep traits on the risk of AMI, but all combinations of sleep traits increased the risk of AMI except those with long sleep. This indicates that the main effects of sleep traits on AMI are likely to be independent of each other.

Abstract
Coordinated fluctuations in female reproductive physiology and thermoregulatory output have been reported for over a century. These changes occur rhythmically at the hourly (ultradian), daily (circadian), and multi-day (ovulatory) timescales, are critical for reproductive function, and have led to the use of temperature patterns as a proxy for female reproductive state. The mechanisms underlying coupling between reproductive and thermoregulatory systems are not fully established, hindering the expansion of inferences that body temperature can provide about female reproductive status. At present, numerous digital tools rely on temperature to infer the timing of ovulation and additional applications (e.g., monitoring ovulatory irregularities and progression of puberty, pregnancy, and menopause are developed based on the assumption that reproductive-thermoregulatory coupling occurs across timescales and life stages. However, without clear understanding of the mechanisms and degree of coupling among the neural substrates regulating temperature and the reproductive axis, whether such approaches will bear fruit in particular domains is uncertain. In this overview, we present evidence supporting broad coupling among the central circuits governing reproduction, thermoregulation, and broader systemic physiology, focusing on timing at ultradian frequencies. Future work characterizing the dynamics of reproductive-thermoregulatory coupling across the lifespan, and of conditions that may decouple these circuits (e.g., circadian disruption, metabolic disease) and compromise female reproductive health, will aid in the development of strategies for early detection of reproductive irregularities and monitoring the efficacy of fertility treatments.

Abstract
The molecular circadian timing system involves genes known as "clock genes," such as the PER3 gene. Studies have demonstrated associations among a repeat polymorphism (VNTR) of the PER3 gene with chronotypes, with the occurrence of circadian rhythm disorders and with sleep homeostasis phenotypes. The aim of this study was to investigate, by actigraphy, sleep and circadian rhythm profiles of people with different genotypes for the VNTR polymorphism of the PER3 gene. We genotyped 467 individuals (46,39% male) for the PER3 VNTR polymorphism. The mean age of the participants was 21.84 ± 2.64, ranging from 18 to 30 y old. Actigraphy data were collected from a subsample of 81 subjects with PER3 4-repeats homozygous (PER34/4) or 5-repeats homozygous (PER35/5) genotypes from April to June of 2021. From this sample, 48 PER34/4 and 33 PER35/5 subjects wore a wrist actigraph between 12 and 19 d. The sleep onset (weekdays, p = 0.015; weekend, p = 0.022) and offset (weekdays, p = 0.004; weekend, p = 0.041) of the PER35/5 group occurred later than the PER34/4 group. Similar results were observed for the mid-sleep phase of weekdays (MSW) (p = 0.008) and free days (MSF) (p = 0.019), and for the mid-sleep phase corrected for sleep debt accumulated over the week (MSFsc) (p = 0.024). Despite the phase differences found between the PER34/4 and PER35/5 groups, no differences were found in sleep duration and social jet lag. However, the PER34/4 group presented, on average, a longer sleep rebound on the days off when compared to the PER35/5 (p = 0.002). The PER35/5 group showed lower interdaily stability (IS) (p = 0.032) and higher daily activity rhythm variability (IV) (p = 0.035). The findings of the present study revealed associations between the PER3 gene, sleep, and circadian rhythms. In general, we found that the gene is associated with the expression of sleep timing and duration and to the phase of the activity rhythm. The experiments carried out here occurred in the COVID-19 pandemic scenario, which should be considered as an environmental element with potential effects on the results obtained.

Abstract
This study relates answers to the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) from Arctic Sojourn Workers (ASW) of Yamburg Settlement, 68° Latitude North, 75° Longitude East (n = 180; mean age ± SD; range: 49.2 ± 7.8; 25-66 y; 45% women) to Arctic Sojourn Work Experience (ASWE), age and health status. Chronotype, Mid Sleep on Free Days sleep corrected (MSFsc) and sleep characteristics of ASW were compared to those of age-matched Tyumen Residents (TR, n = 270; mean age ± SD; range: 48.4 ± 8.4; 25-69 y; 48% women), 57° Latitude North, 65° Longitude East. ASW have earlier MSFsc than TR (70 min in men, p < 0.0001, and 45 min in women, p < 0.0001). Unlike TR, their MSFsc was not associated with age (r = 0.037; p = 0.627) and was linked to a larger Social Jet Lag (+21 min in men; p = 0.003, and +18 min in women; p = 0.003). These differences were not due to outdoor light exposure (OLE): OLE on work (OLEw) or free (OLEf) days was not significantly different between ASW and TR in men and was significantly less in ASW than in TR women (OLEw: -31 min; p < 0.001; OLEf: -24 min; p = 0.036). ASWE, but not age, was associated with compromised lipid metabolism in men. After accounting for multiple testing, when corrected for age and sex, higher triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein ratio, TG/HDL correlated with ASWE (r = 0.271, p < 0.05). In men, greater SJL was associated with lower HDL (r = -0.204; p = 0.043). Worse proxies of metabolic health were related to unfavorable components of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index in ASW. Higher OLE on free days was associated with lower systolic (b = -0.210; p < 0.05) and diastolic (b = -0.240; p < 0.05) blood pressure.

Abstract
Although social jetlag (SJL) is generally considered a chronic condition, even acute SJL may have unfavorable effects on the cardiovascular system. We focused on the acute effects of SJL on morning blood pressure (BP) surge. This randomized crossover trial recruited 20 healthy men. In the SJL trial, participants delayed their bedtime by three hours on Friday and Saturday nights. Participants in the control (CON) trial implemented the same sleep-wake timing as on weekdays. Pre- and post-intervention measurements were performed to evaluate resting cardiovascular variables on Friday and Monday mornings, respectively. The ambulatory BP was automatically measured during the sleep and awake periods for 2 h after the participant woke up at night before pre- and post-intervention measurements. SJL (average mid-sleep time on weekends - average mid-sleep time on weekdays) occurred only in the SJL trial (SJL: 181 ± 24 min vs. CON: 8 ± 47 min). Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) and morning BP surge on Monday in the SJL trial were significantly higher than those on Friday in the SJL trial (cfPWV: P = 0.001, morning BP surge: P < 0.001), and those on Monday in the CON trial (cfPWV: P = 0.007; morning BP surge: P < 0.001). Furthermore, a significant positive correlation was found between ΔcfPWV and Δmorning BP surge (R = 0.587, P = 0.004). These results suggest that even acute SJL augments morning BP surge. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare the anthropometric and sleep-wake rhythm characteristics of schoolchildren that attend school in morning and afternoon school shifts. METHODS We recruited 18 481 individuals (females: 56.4%) aged 11 to 18 years old with an average age of 14.4 ± 1.7 years old. In total, 812 (4.2%) questionnaires were incomplete. The self-reported height and weight were used to assess the sex- and age-corrected body mass index of the participants. The Munich ChronoType Questionnaire was used to assess the chronotype, social jetlag, and sleep duration of the participants. RESULTS In total, 12.6% of the participants were affected by overweight or obesity. The overweight and obesity incidence rate was higher among the students studying in the afternoon (odd ratio [95%CI]: 1.33 [1.16-1.52]). The afternoon school shift had a negative impact on the anthropometric indicators only in the 11-14-year-olds (1.29 [1.11-1.50]) and girls (1.26 [1.04-1.54]) with an early (1.27 [1.03-1.56]) and intermediate (1.30 [1.07-1.58]) chronotype. CONCLUSION The data obtained indicated that the afternoon school shift is not ideal, especially for female children and adolescents under 15 years old with an early and intermediate chronotype.

Abstract
Younger adults have a biological disposition to sleep and wake at later times that conflict with early morning obligations like work and school; this conflict leads to inadequate sleep duration and a difference in sleep timing between school days and weekends. The COVID-19 pandemic forced universities and workplaces to shut down in person attendance and implement remote learning and meetings that decreased/removed commute times and gave students more flexibility with their sleep timing. To determine the impact of remote learning on the daily sleep-wake cycle we conducted a natural experiment using wrist actimetry monitors to compare activity patterns and light exposure in three cohorts of students: pre-shutdown in-person learning (2019), during-shutdown remote learning (2020), and post-shutdown in-person learning (2021). Our results show that during-shutdown the difference between school day and weekend sleep onset, duration, and midsleep timing was diminished. For instance, midsleep during school days pre-shutdown occurred 50 min later on weekends (5:14 ± 12 min) than school days (4:24 ± 14 min) but it did not differ under COVID restrictions. Additionally, we found that while the interindividual variance in sleep parameters increased under COVID restrictions the intraindividual variance did not change, indicating that the schedule flexibility did not cause more irregular sleep patterns. In line with our sleep timing results, school day vs. weekend differences in the timing of light exposure present pre- and post-shutdown were absent under COVID restrictions. Our results provide further evidence that increased freedom in class scheduling allows university students to better and consistently align sleep behavior between school days and weekends.

Abstract
Chronic stress leads to circadian disruption, with variability in sleep time and duration. This scenario increases the prevalence and incidence of cardiometabolic abnormalities. Social jetlag (SJL), a proxy of circadian disruption, has been associated with increased vulnerability to the development of metabolic syndrome, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. This research aimed to evaluate how variables associated with cardiometabolic risk are related to SJL and poor sleep among university professors. From 2018 to 2019, full-time university professors (n=103) with a mean age of 44±5.4 years were assessed for sleep quality, chronotype, SJL, metabolic components, sociodemographic characteristics, and physical evaluation. Sleep quality and weekday sleep duration were associated with stress (r=0.44 and r=-0.34) and anxiety (r=0.40), respectively. Mean sleep duration (n=65) was 7.0±1.1 h and all professors with poor sleep (41.2%; n=28) worked 40 h/week. Professors who slept less were significantly (r=-0.25) older, and teaching time (years) was positively correlated with blood glucose (r=0.42). Mean SJL was 59.8 ±4.5 min (n=68) and 48.5% of these professors had values ≤1 h and 51.4% ≥1 h. SJL and blood glucose concentration were associated (r=0.35), which reinforced that challenges to the circadian system reverberate on metabolism. In this study, professors at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte had cardiometabolic risks related to anxiety, stress, and sleep quality.

METHOD This study was planned and performed in a descriptive, method. Research data were collected in the 2019-2020 fall semester. The research population consisted of nursing students working at the nursing departments of state and private universities in Istanbul. The study sample included 1152 nursing students who agreed to participate in the study after obtaining informed consent. Data were collected using the "Student Information Form," "Morningness- Eveningness Scale," and "Short Form of the Turkish WHO Quality of Life Scale." RESULTS Of the nursing students, 81.2% (n = 935) were women, 26.5% (n = 305) were first-year students, 86.5% (n = 997) were non-smoker, and 92.4% (n = 1065) not consumed alcohol. Most of the nursing students in this study were intermediate chronotypes (80.2%). Students' social-jet lag mean value was 1.36±0.73 hours (min:0-max:4.8). Multiple regression analysis showed that an increase in social jetlag decreases the average scores of the physical and environmental subdimension and an increase in the morning chronotype increases the average scores of the physical, mental, and social subdimension. CONCLUSION High social jet lag reduced the quality of life and a morning chronotype improved the quality of life.

Abstract
Shift work has emerged as a significant health concern in recent years, and research has revealed a link to circadian rhythm dysregulation and atherosclerosis, both of which can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Currently, there is a lack of updated reviews regarding the impact of shiftwork on CVD. Thus, the present narrative review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the latest research on the relationship between shift work and CVD, identify potential gaps in the current knowledge, and highlight areas for future research. Database searches for peer-reviewed articles published between January 2013 to January 2023 on shift work associated CVD revealed many studies that found shift work is linked with increased prevalence of carotid artery plaque, increased arterial stiffness, and carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) all suggestive of a progression of atherosclerosis attributable to shift work. Hypertension, diabetes, and a sedentary lifestyle are known risks for CVD, and the results of the present study suggest that shift work should be added to that list. The elevation of inflammatory markers and DNA damage in shift workers may be linked to their increased progression of atherosclerosis and the positive association of shift work with coronary artery disease. There are minimal studies on mitigating approaches for shift work-related CVD, such as diet modification or exercise, emphasizing the need for further directed research in this area.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate COVID-19's impact on college student health behaviors. PARTICIPANTS 189 college students. METHODS Participants completed an online survey on behaviors relating to sleep, sedentary activities, and physical activity before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Comparisons utilized Students' dependent t-test or Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. RESULTS There was an increase in time to fall asleep (before: 23.4 ± 18.0 vs. during: 42.8 ± 44.3 min·day-1, p < 0.001), time spent in bed (before: 7.8 ± 1.5 vs. during: 8.5 ± 1.5 hr·day-1, p < 0.001), as well as shifts in later bed and awake time (p < 0.001). Total sedentary time increased during the pandemic (before: 9.0 ± 3.8 vs. during: 9.9 ± 4.1 hr·day-1, p = 0.016); and time spent using a TV, computer, or phone (before: 3.1 ± 1.9 vs. during: 4.2 ± 2.3 hr·day-1, p < 0.001). There was a significant decrease in moderate-vigorous activity (before: 123.8 ± 96.0 vs. during: 108.9 ± 75.5 min·week-1, p = 0.028) and resistance training days (before: 2.4 ± 2.1 vs. during: 1.7 ± 2.1 days·week-1, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS COVID-19 negatively influenced health behaviors in college students.

Abstract
College students' social and eating jet lags and chronotypes may be related to irregular eating habits. Therefore, we examined the relationship between social and eating jet lags, chronotypes, variability in first and last mealtimes, and non-eating duration, as well as the effects of snacking between dinner and bedtime on social and eating jet lags, chronotypes, and mealtime variation. A total of 1900 Japanese male college students were recruited in this study. Mean wake-up time, bedtime, sleeping time, first and last mealtimes, snacks between meals, non-eating duration, the midpoint of non-eating duration, social and eating jet lags, and chronotype were calculated. Standard deviations in first and last mealtimes, the midpoint of non-eating duration, and the coefficient of variation in non-eating duration were used to evaluate mealtime variations. Mealtime variations were significantly associated with social and eating jet lags, chronotype, the midpoint of non-eating duration, and the difference in first and last mealtime between school holidays and class days. Chronotype and the midpoint of non-eating duration were significantly delayed with increased snacking after dinner. Mealtime variations were significantly lower in those who avoided snacking than in those who did not. Thus, social and eating jet lags and chronotypes are associated with sleep habits and mealtime irregularities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is evidence that reduced sleep duration increases hunger, appetite, and food intake, leading to metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. However, the impact of sleep timing, irrespective of its duration and on the regulation of hunger and appetite, is less clear. We aimed to evaluate the impact of sleep loss during the late vs. early part of the night on the regulation of hunger, appetite, and desire for food. METHODS Fifteen normal-weight ([mean ± SEM] body-mass index: 23.3 ± 0.4 kg/m2) healthy men were studied in a randomized, balanced, crossover design, including two conditions of sleep loss, i.e., 4 h sleep during the first night-half ('late-night sleep loss'), 4 h sleep during the second night-half ('early-night sleep loss'), and a control condition with 8h sleep ('regular sleep'), respectively. Feelings of hunger and appetite were assessed through visual analogue scales, and plasma ghrelin and leptin were measured from blood samples taken before, during, and after night-time sleep. RESULTS Ghrelin and feelings of hunger and appetite, as well as the desire for food, were increased after 'late-night sleep loss', but not 'early-night sleep loss', whereas leptin remained unaffected by the timing of sleep loss. CONCLUSIONS Our data indicate that timing of sleep restriction modulates the effects of acute sleep loss on ghrelin and appetite regulation in healthy men. 'Late-night sleep loss' might be a risk factor for metabolic diseases, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Thereby, our findings highlight the metabolic relevance of chronobiological sleep timing.

Abstract
AbstractInsomnia and short/long sleep duration increase the risk of AMI, but their interaction with each other or with chronotype is not well known. We investigated the prospective joint associations of any two of these sleep traits on risk of AMI. We included 302 456 and 31 091 participants without past AMI episodes from UK Biobank (UKBB; 2006–10) and the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT2; 1995–97), respectively. A total of 6 833 and 2 540 incident AMIs were identified during an average 11.7 and 21.0 years follow-up, in UKBB and HUNT2, respectively. Compared to those who reported normal sleep duration (7–8 h) without insomnia symptoms, the Cox proportional hazard ratios (HRs) for incident AMI in UKBB among participants who reported normal, short and long sleep duration with insomnia symptoms were 1.07 (95% CI 0.99, 1.15), 1.16 (95% CI 1.07, 1.25) and 1.40 (95% CI 1.21, 1.63), respectively. The corresponding HRs in HUNT2 were 1.09 (95% CI 0.95, 1.25), 1.17 (95% CI 0.87, 1.58) and 1.02 (95% CI 0.85, 1.23). The HRs for incident AMI in UKBB among evening chronotypes were 1.19 (95% CI 1.10, 1.29) for those who had insomnia symptoms, 1.18 (95% CI 1.08, 1.29) for those with short sleep duration, and 1.21 (95% CI 1.07, 1.37) for those with long sleep duration, compared to morning chronotypes without another sleep symptom. The relative excess risk for incident AMI in UKBB due to interaction between insomnia symptoms and long sleep duration was 0.25 (95% CI 0.01, 0.48). Insomnia symptoms with long sleep duration may contribute more than just an additive effect of these sleep traits on the risk of AMI.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the association between chronotype, eating jetlag, and eating misalignment with weight status among Malaysian adults during the COVID-19 restriction. This online cross-sectional study included 175 working adults recruited from March to July 2020. The chronotype was assessed using Morningness Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) while eating jetlag and mealtime variability were measured using Chrononutrition Profile Questionnaire (CPQ). Multiple linear regression demonstrated that lower breakfast frequency (β=-0.258, p = .002) and longer eating duration (β = 0.393, p < .001) were associated with later first eating events on workfree days. Both intermediate (β = 0.543, p < .001) and evening chronotypes (β = 0.523, p = .001) tend to eat their first meals later compared to morning person. Similar patterns were observed for overall eating jetlaggers in which lower breakfast frequency (β=-0.022, p = .011), longer eating duration (β = 0.293, p < .001), intermediate chronotype (β = 0.512, p < .001), and evening chronotype (β = 0.495, p = .003) were associated with eating later meals on workfree days. Additionally, higher BMI was also associated with eating later meals on workfree days (β = 0.181, p = .025). During movement restriction, discrepancies of mealtimes during work and workfree days offer new insight into modern eating habits that can influence weight status and general eating habits such as breakfast skipping and total daily eating duration. Population meal timing variability was affected during movement restrictions, and it was closely related to weight status.

Abstract
Circadian rhythms are generated by the circadian clock, a self-sustained internal timing system that exhibits 24-h rhythms in the body. Many metabolic, cellular, behavioral and physiological processes are regulated by the circadian clock in coordination with environmental cues. The present study is a comprehensive review of the currently existing evidence concerning the relationship between circadian rhythms and sleep, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders. We thoroughly searched the online databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to find the existing clinical studies from the last twenty-three years (2000-2023). Circadian misalignment was found to be associated with an increase in the risk of metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity, as well as inadequate sleep quality. In this review article, all the included studies had a strength protocol design and all of them were conducted on humans. However, the most common limitations of them were the small sample size and the short time of the intervention. In conclusion, managing the factors that disrupt the optimal function of central and peripheral clocks can help to reduce the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, improving also sleep quality. Future studies should further explore the underlying mechanisms of the interconnections between circadian clocks and sleep, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders. This may provide new opportunities for advance chronotherapy approach.

Abstract
Impaired rest-activity circadian rhythm has been associated with increased risk for morbidity and mortality. Animals with mutations in clock genes display accelerated aging and shortened life span. Whether impaired rest-activity circadian rhythm is also associated with processes of aging in humans has not been explored. We analyzed accelerometry and physiological data from 7 539 adults participating in the 2011-2014 waves of the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. We used accelerometry data to compute rest-activity rhythm measurements. We used physiological data to compute measurements of biological aging according to 3 published algorithms: Klemera-Doubal method (KDM) Biological Age, PhenoAge, and homeostatic dysregulation (HD). In the models adjusting multiple covariates, participants with higher relative amplitude (RA) and interdaily stability (IS) and lower intradaily variability (IV) exhibited less advanced biological aging indexed by KDM and PhenoAge (effect sizes for 1-quantile increase in these rest-activity measurements ranged from 0.54 to 0.57 "years" for RA, 0.24 to 0.28 "years" for IS, and 0.24 to 0.35 "years" for IV, ps < .001). Similar finding was observed for biological aging indexed by HD, but the significance was limited to RA with 1-quantile increase in RA associated with 0.09 log units decrease in HD (p < .001). The results indicate that blunted rest-activity circadian rhythm is associated with accelerated aging in the general population, suggesting that interventions aiming at enhancing circadian rhythm may be a novel approach for the extension of a healthy life span.
