Abstract
The literature on the effects of social health insurance focuses on its stated goals, which are health status and financial protection. In contrast, we examine the effect of the Peruvian program on student performance using a sharp RDD. We use a unique individual-level database built from the merger of household survey data and standardized test scores from a national census. We find that social health insurance has large effects on mathematics and reading comprehension scores. The clearest mechanism is a lower incidence of anemia among children and family members.

Abstract
BACKGROUND US school meal programs serve billions of meals annually; however, little is known about their environmental impacts. OBJECTIVE This study estimated the daily greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), water scarcity footprint (WSF), and food cost associated with food consumed in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program, and modeled the association of food substitutions and food waste reduction. DESIGN A cross-sectional analysis of Day-1 dietary intake in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2011-2018. A diet model was constructed to estimate the effects of food substitutions and food waste reduction on GHGE, WSF, food cost, and nutrient intake. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING Participants included 796 children and adolescents from prekindergarten to grade 12 who consumed breakfast or lunch on a weekday from a school cafeteria that met the minimum standard for an eligible meal (ie, offered or served minimum amounts of milk, protein foods, whole grains, fruits, and/or vegetables), and that is reimbursed for food costs. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The main outcomes were per capita nutrient intake, GHGE, WSF, and food cost. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED Differences in mean influences and between actual consumption and 2 modeled scenarios (food substitutions and food waste reductions) were evaluated using paired Wald tests. The modeled food substitutions were soy milk for cow's milk, plant-based meat alternatives for beef, poultry for beef, and seafood for beef. All values in the figures were adjusted for energy and survey cycle using linear regression models. RESULTS Daily per capita GHGE and WSF for food consumed in school food programs were 1.69 kg carbon dioxide equivalents (95% CI 1.55-1.84) and 1023 L equivalents (95% CI 920-1127), respectively. Dairy (mainly cow's milk) and protein foods (mainly beef) were the largest contributors to GHGE. Fruit was the largest contributor to the WSF. Modeled food substitutions significantly reduced GHGE by 14% to 25% and WSF by 11% to 14% for the school meal programs; however, there were mixed effects on food cost (-2% to 6% change) and nutrient intake. Modeled food waste reductions of 5% were associated with a 1% decrease in GHGE, WSF, and food costs. CONCLUSIONS The National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program are critical to child nutrition, and food substitution and food waste reduction strategies may lower their environmental footprint with manageable influences on nutrient density, although implementing these programs effectively can be challenging.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE Evidence-based menstrual health education is not mandated in any US state or territory. Aspects of normal and abnormal menstruation impact quality of life and educational engagement, but many youths are not prepared to know when to seek medical help. We sought to determine which topics should be included in a third- through eighth-grade school-based menstrual health curriculum. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional online survey of medical professionals who care for patients with menstrual problems. We asked participants to indicate the top 3 menstrual health topics by grade, and we compared the most common responses by year. We also solicited general comments about the curriculum content. RESULTS Surveys from 55 medical professionals met the criteria for analysis. The topics selected most frequently were normal and abnormal menstruation, reproductive anatomy, puberty timeline, and menstrual products. Most recommended the topics of puberty timeline (38, 69.1%) and reproductive anatomy (34, 61.8%) for third grade, introducing normal menstruation (31, 56.4%) and menstrual products (24, 46.3%) in fourth grade, and abnormal menstruation (27, 49.1%) in sixth grade. More complex topics, such as world cultures around menstruation (14, 25.5%) and period poverty (11, 20.0%), were preferred for eighth grade. Many providers emphasized the importance of teaching normal vs abnormal menstruation in a school health curriculum. CONCLUSION Medical professionals provided recommendations for a school-based menstrual health curriculum that introduces topics at developmentally appropriate ages from a medical perspective, teaches basic menstrual symptom management, and instructs on warning signs for abnormal menstruation.

Abstract
It is crucial to address the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) disparity of adolescent girls for better health outcomes and quality of life, particularly in humanitarian crises. Adolescent girls in the Rohingya refugee camp are particularly vulnerable to various health morbidities related to SRH. The study aims to assess the reproductive health morbidity and healthcare-seeking practices of adolescent girls in the Rohingya community. A total of 406 Rohingya adolescent girls in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, were interviewed to collect relevant information. The respondents were asked to report their menstruation-related problems, morbidities, anemia signs, and healthcare-seeking behavior during these problems. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association of socio-demographic variables with menstruation-related outcome variables and healthcare-seeking behavior. Among adolescent girls, 26.1 % experienced abnormal bleeding durations, 28.1 % reported irregular menstruation, 27.8 % faced menstruation-related morbidities, and 36 % showed signs of anemia. Almost half of the respondents (49.3 %) received healthcare from health professionals. The married adolescent girls were less likely to have an abnormal duration of bleeding (AOR: 0.38, 95 % CI: 0.19-0.74, p = 0.004) and irregular menstruation (AOR: 0.44, 95 % CI: 0.23-0.86, p = 0.016). The higher educational level of the adolescent girls contributed to the lower risk of abnormal duration of bleeding (AOR: 0.55, 95 % CI: 0.33-0.91, p = 0.020) and irregular menstruation (AOR: 0.61, 95 % CI: 0.37-1.00, p = 0.049). Those with abdominal and lower back pain were found more likely (AOR: 3.02, 95 % CI: 1.58-5.77, p = 0.001) to seek healthcare from qualified doctors. Moreover, educated adolescent girls were more likely (AOR: 1.81, 95 % CI: 1.09-3.02, p = 0.023) to seek treatment for reproductive problems from qualified doctors. Thus, the concerned authorities, non-government organizations (NGOs), and humanitarian organizations could take steps to reduce reproductive health morbidity and facilitate receiving medical care from a specialist.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, iron deficiency anaemia is a widespread public health problem affecting vulnerable populations including adolescents. However, over the years, the Uganda Demographic Health Surveys mostly report the status of anaemia for women of reproductive age (15-49 years) and children up to 5 years, leaving out the focus on adolescents. Moreover, high prevalence of anaemia among children below five years could suggest that anaemia still persists at adolescence. Therefore, the study aimed at determining dietary quality, prevalence of anaemia and their associated factors among school-going adolescents. METHODS A cross-sectional study involving 341 adolescent boys and girls aged 10-19 years was carried out in two rural schools in Gulu district. Prevalence of anaemia was determined by obtaining blood specimens from a finger prick into a microcuvette and analysed for haemoglobin (Hb) level using Haemoglobin analyser, whereas dietary quality was assessed using the Individual Dietary Diversity Score (IDDS). Socio-economic and demographic data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. RESULTS The overall prevalence of anaemia was 16.0% (Girls:18.1%; Boys:13.0%), while the mean Hb level was 13.2 ± 1.4 g/dl (Girls 13.0 ± 1.3 g/dl; Boys 13.5 ± 1.6 g/dl). The mean number of food groups consumed among the adolescents was 3.5 ± 2.1 for girls and 3.0 ± 1.8 for boys (p˃0.05). Animal source foods, fruits and vitamin A-rich vegetables, other fruits and vegetables were consumed by adolescent girls more than the boys. Similarly, a higher proportion of adolescent girls than boys consumed iron-rich foods: fish and meat, organ meat and dark green leafy vegetables. Further, all the socio-demographic factors in the study did not predict dietary diversity (p ˃ 0.05). On the other hand, education attainment by parent/guardian and nature of menstruation predicted the prevalence of anaemia amongst adolescents (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of anaemia was high among adolescents. Coupled with this, there, was low dietary diversity among the adolescents. The level of education of the parent/guardian and nature of the menstrual discharge were significant predictors of anaemia amongst girls. From this study, we recommend interventions by both health and agricultural-related practitioners to strengthen activities in rural schools such as health and nutrition education to create awareness about dietary diversity and promotion of agricultural practices such as school vegetable gardens, orchards poultry production and rearing of small ruminants to support consumption of diverse foods in schools with the view of reducing the burden from iron deficiency anaemia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Anemia is a significant health problem that has a profound impact on young children under the age of five. It can result in severe consequences, such as stunted growth, impaired cognitive and motor development, increased illness, and even death. In Ghana, anemia is the leading cause of child mortality, yet there is a lack of information available on the prevalence of anemia and the factors associated with its severity in children under five in the country. To fill this gap, this study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and determinants of anemia severity among children aged 6-59 months in Ghana. METHODS This study used data from the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS) and included a weighted total sample of 3585 children aged 6-59 months. Given the hierarchical nature of the DHS data and the ordinal nature of anemia, a multilevel ordinal logistic regression model was employed. The Brant test was used to determine whether the proportional odds assumption was met (P ≥0.05). Deviance was used for model comparison. For the multivariable analysis, variables with a p-value ≤0.2 in the bi-variable analysis were considered. The Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was reported as a factor associated with anemia severity in the multivariable multilevel proportional odds model. RESULTS A study conducted in Ghanaian children aged 6-59 months found that 49.1% of them had anemia (95% CI: 47.4%-50.7%). The results indicated that 27.6% of patients had mild anemia, while 21.4% had moderate to severe anemia. Factors that were significantly associated with higher odds of childhood anemia included being 6-23 months old, male, having a maternal age of 15-24 or 25-34 years, belonging to poorer or wealthier households, having a higher birth order, being stunted, having maternal anemia, no media exposure, and living in the Northern, Upper East, or Upper West regions. CONCLUSION Anemia among children aged 6-59 months in Ghana is a major public health concern. It is recommended to improve access to the media, address maternal anemia through targeted interventions, and strengthen the wealth status of families. Furthermore, preconception care for mothers during pregnancy should be supported to reduce anemia in the long-term. Additionally, the early detection and management of stunted children should be strengthened to decrease childhood anemia.

Abstract
This study assesses the associations between nutritional status and cognitive development of schoolchildren. A unit increase in height-for-age Z-score was associated with 0.12 SD, 0.08 SD and 0.12 SD increase in standardized digit span, Raven's colored progressive metrics, and performance index of visual search task, respectively. A unit increase in body-mass-index-for-age Z-score was associated with 0.11 SD increase in standardized digit span. Hemoglobin concentration was not associated with any of the cognitive outcomes. Chronic malnutrition was associated with cognitive development in schoolchildren while thinness and hemoglobin concentrations were associated with selected or no cognitive outcomes, respectively.

Abstract
Background/Objectives. Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide and is the leading cause of anemia in the pediatric population (microcytic, hypochromic anemia due to iron deficiency). Moreover, untreated iron deficiency can lead to various systemic consequences and can disrupt the child's development. Methods/Results. Therefore, a team of experts from the Polish Pediatric Society, the Polish Society of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology, the Polish Neonatology Society, and the Polish Society of Family Medicine, based on a review of the current literature, their own clinical experience, and critical discussion, has developed updated guidelines for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of iron deficiency in children from birth to 18 years of age. These recommendations apply to the general population and do not take into account the specifics of individual conditions and diseases.

Abstract
The primary cause of anemia worldwide is due to poor diet and iron deficiency. Iron (Fe) enriched yeast can be the most effective way to manage anemia because of the capability for biotransformation of mineral to organic and bioavailable iron. To overcome the low richness of yeast, the use of siderophore as cellular iron carriers is a new approach. In this research, for the first time the potential of siderophore in increasing the Fe enrichment of Saccharomyces boulardii (S. boulardii), which is important because of its probiotic properties and resistance to different stresses, has been investigated to produce of potential iron supplements. For this purpose, siderophore was produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). Siderophore impact, along with ten other independent process variables, has been studied on the efficiency of iron biotransformation by the Plackett-Burman design (PBD). The results showed that the highest biotransformation yield was 17.77 mg Fe/g dry cell weight (DCW) in the highest biomass weight of 9 g/l. Iron concentration is the most important variable, with contributions of 46% and 70.79% for biomass weight and biotransformation, respectively, followed by fermentation time, agitation speed, and KH2PO4 concentration. But increasing the level of siderophore and zinc led to a significant negative effect. siderophore inefficiency may be attributed to the absence of membrane receptors for pyoverdine (Pvd) and pyochelin (Pch) siderophores. Also, the steric hindrance of the cell wall mannan, the stickiness and sediment ability of the yeast, can create limitations in the absorption of elements. Such yeast can be used as a potential source of iron even for vegetarians and vegans in the form of medicinal and fortified food products to improve the treatment of anemia. It is recommended that further research be focused on increasing the iron enrichment of yeast by overcoming the structural barrier of the cell wall, investigating factors affecting membrane permeability and iron transport potential of other types of siderophores.

Abstract
von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder. The disorder is characterized by excessive mucocutaneous bleeding. The most common bleeding manifestations of this condition include nosebleeds, bruising, bleeding from minor wounds, menorrhagia or postpartum bleeding in women as well as bleeding after surgery. Other less frequent symptoms include gastrointestinal bleeding, haematomas or haemarthroses. VWD pathophysiology is complex and results from defects in von Willebrand factor (VWF) glycoprotein. Quantitative deficiencies are responsible for type 1 VWD with a partial decrease of VWF and type 3 with the complete absence of VWF. Qualitative abnormalities cause type 2 VWD, being further divided into types 2A, 2B, 2M and 2N. Although common, VWD is at risk of misdiagnosis, overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis owing to several factors, including complex diagnosis, variability of bleeding symptoms, presence of external variables (blood groups and other physiological modifiers such as exercise, thyroid hormones, oestrogens, and ageing), and lack of disease awareness among non-specialist health-care providers. Establishing the correct VWD diagnosis requires an array of specialized phenotypic assays and/or molecular genetic testing of the VWF gene. The management of bleeding includes increasing endogenous VWF levels with desmopressin or infusion of exogenous VWF concentrates (plasma-derived or recombinant). Fibrinolytic inhibitors, topical haemostatic agents and hormonal therapies are used as effective adjunctive measures.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Malnutrition is one of the most serious community health issues in developing countries. This study estimated total energy intake, Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Selenium (Se), Calcium (Ca), and Phosphate (PO4) levels among school-going children (aged 13-17 years) of the underprivileged area in Sindh, Pakistan. METHODS Children from Mithi City, District Tharparkar, were selected for this cross-sectional investigation. Students from various schools from both genders who fulfilled the selection criteria were selected. A questionnaire was filled, and five ml blood samples were taken to analyze blood parameters. Each participant's estimated nutrient intake (ENI) per day was assessed and matched to the recommended daily allowance (RDA) to determine their micro and macronutrient intake. RESULTS A total of 300 school-going children [150(50%) boys (mean age 15± 0.8 years) and 150(50%) girls (mean age 14±1.3years)] were included in this study. Total calories (1449±949 Kcal vs. 1245±215 Kcal; p < .001), carbohydrates (138±27 gm vs. 126 ±25 gm; p < .001) protein (47±9.1 gm vs. 44±6 gm; p < .001) was significantly higher among boys compared to girls. In contrast, calcium (1094±105 mg vs. 1144±100; 0.004), phosphate 1050±125 vs. 1148±147; p<0.001), iron (9.2±1.7 mg vs. 10±1.3 mg; p<0.001), and Zinc (7.4±1.8 mg vs. 9.9±1.7 mg; p<0.001) intake was significantly higher among girls than boys. Gender-wise comparison of serum metals in school-going children showed that serum iron was significantly lower among girls than boys (100.86±25.65 μg/dl vs. 78.48±28.66 μg/dl; p<0.001), and no difference was found in serum Zn, Se, and Ca levels. Total proteins were also significantly lower among girls than boys (6.48±1.01g/dl vs. 4.87±1.4301g/dl; p<0.001). Serum iron, Ca, and total proteins were significantly lower among girls with normal ranges compared to boys with normal ranges. Total protein was significantly lower among girls below normal ranges than boys with normal ranges (p < .001). The correlation of carbohydrates, protein, and fat with some serum biochemical parameters in school-going children showed that serum Fe was significantly linked with proteins (r = 0.255; p < .0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings showed a concurrent shortage of macro and micronutrients. The current study also revealed that total energy intake was lower than the RDA and significant Fe, Zn, and Se deficiencies. The findings highlight the importance of measures aimed at improving children's nutritional status.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of iron deficiency and anemia in the setting of modern-day maintenance immunosuppression in pediatric heart transplant (HTx) recipients is unclear. The primary aim was to determine the prevalence of iron deficiency (serum ferritin < 30 ng/mL ± transferrin saturation < 20%) and anemia per World Health Organization diagnostic criteria and associated risk factors. METHODS Single-center, cross-sectional analysis of 200 consecutive pediatric HTx recipients (<21 years old) from 2005 to 2021. Data were collected at 1-year post-HTx at the time of annual protocol biopsy. RESULTS Median age at transplant was 3 years (IQR .5-12.2). The median ferritin level was 32 ng/mL with 46% having ferritin < 30 ng/mL. Median transferrin saturation (TSAT) was 22% with 47% having TSAT < 20%. Median hemoglobin was 11 g/dL with 54% having anemia. Multivariable analysis revealed lower absolute lymphocyte count, TSAT < 20%, and estimated glomerular filtration rate <75 mL/min/1.73 m2 were independently associated with anemia. Ferritin < 30 ng/mL in isolation was not associated with anemia. Ferritin < 30 ng/mL may aid in detecting absolute iron deficiency while TSAT < 20% may be useful in identifying patients with functional iron deficiency ± anemia in pediatric HTx recipients. CONCLUSION Iron deficiency and anemia are highly prevalent in pediatric HTx recipients. Future studies are needed to assess the impact of iron deficiency, whether with or without anemia, on clinical outcomes in pediatric HTx recipients.

Abstract
Iron deficiency (ID) is a common and challenging problem in adolescence. In order to prevent, recognize, and treat ID in this age range, it is critical to understand the recommended daily intake of iron in relation to an adolescent's activity, dietary habits, and basal iron losses. Adolescents following vegetarian or vegan diets exclusively rely on plant-based, nonheme iron, which has decreased bioavailability compared with heme iron and requires increased total iron intake. Individuals with disordered eating habits, excessive menstrual blood loss, and certain chronic health conditions (including inflammatory bowel disease and heart failure) are at high risk of ID and the development of symptomatic iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Adolescent athletes and those with sleep and movement disorders may also be more sensitive to changes in iron status. Iron deficiency is typically treated with oral iron supplementation. To maximize iron absorption, oral iron should be administered no more than once daily, ideally in the morning, while avoiding foods and drinks that inhibit iron absorption. Oral iron therapy should be provided for ≥3 mo in the setting of ID to reach a ferritin of 20 ng/mL before discontinuation. Intravenous iron is being increasingly used in this population and has demonstrated efficacy and safety in adolescents. It should be considered in those with persistent ID despite a course of oral iron, severe and/or symptomatic IDA, and chronic inflammatory conditions characterized by decreased gastrointestinal iron absorption.

Abstract
Malnutrition is considered one of the major public health problems worldwide and negatively affects the growth, development and learning of schoolchildren. This study developed and evaluated a fermented milk drink with added Umbu (Spondias tuberosa) pulp in the weight gain and renutrition of mice submitted to malnutrition by calorie restriction, and in malnourished children. The supplementation with this fermented milk drink contributed to an increase of 7.2 % in body weight, and 64.3 % in albumin, and a reduction of 35 % in cholesterol in malnourished mice. In humans, a group of nine malnourished children consumed a daily 200 mL serving of the milk drink (for 60 days). For humans, the fermented milk drink allowed an increase of 16.5 % in body weight, and 20.9 % in body mass index in malnourished children. In conclusion, fermented milk drink has a positive effect on the re-nutrition of malnourished mice and helps to improve the nutritional status of malnourished children.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study explores whether adolescent girls and young women aged 15-24 who use hormonal methods of contraception are more or less likely to be anemic than their peers. We further examine whether the association between anemia and hormonal contraception varies based on the severity of anemia or the duration of method use. METHODS We conducted secondary analysis of data available for 51 low- and middle-income countries from the Demographic and Health Surveys. For each country, we used logistic regression models to explore the odds of being anemic (mildly, moderately, or severely) for those using hormonal methods of contraception. We also explored the odds of being moderately or severely anemic based on hormonal method use. Drawing on country-level effect estimates, we conducted meta-regression analyses to produce overall estimates of the association between anemia and hormonal contraception. RESULTS Overall, adolescent girls and young women using hormonal methods had lower odds of being mildly, moderately, or severely anemic (adjusted odds ratio 0.68; p < .001) and lower odds of being moderately or severely anemic (adjusted odds ratio 0.57; p < .001) compared to those not using any contraception. Both short- and long-term users of hormonal methods had lower odds of being anemic and lower odds of being moderately or severely anemic compared to those not using hormonal methods. DISCUSSION This study furthers our understanding of the association between anemia and use of hormonal contraception among adolescent girls and young women. More research is needed to assess causality and whether hormonal methods mediate the effects of heavy menstrual bleeding or other risk factors of anemia.

Abstract
About half of the 1.62 billion cases of anemia are because of poor diet and iron deficiency. Currently, the use of iron-enriched yeasts can be used as the most effective and possible way to prevent and treat anemia due to the ability of biotransformation of mineral compounds into the organic form. In this research, for the first time, Saccharomyces (S.) boulardii was used for iron enrichment with the aim that the probiotic properties of yeast provide a potential iron supplement besides improving the bioavailability of iron. Also, due to its higher resistance than other Saccharomyces strains against stresses, it can protect iron against processing temperatures and stomach acidic-enzymatic conditions. So, the effect of three important variables, including concentration of iron, molasses and KH2PO4 on the growth and biotransformation of yeast was investigated by the Box-Behnken design (BBD). The best conditions occurred in 3 g/l KH2PO4, 20 g/l molasses and 12 mg/l FeSO4 with the highest biotransformation 27 mg Fe/g dry cell weight (DCW) and 6 g/l biomass weight. Such yeast can improve fermented products, provide potential supplement, and restore the lost iron of bread, which is a useful iron source, even for vegetarians-vegans and play an important role in manage with anemia. It is recommended that in future researches, attention should be paid to increasing the iron enrichment of yeast through permeabilizing the membrane and overcoming the structural barrier of the cell wall.

Abstract
Background Anemia among adolescent girls is a worldwide public health problem. Although anemia has several causes, the most common and significant is iron deficiency. Treatment of anemia with iron alone may result in reduced compliance on account of adverse effects. Various studies have revealed that use of vitamin C in addition to iron improves its absorption and reduces the ill effects of the therapy. However, a concrete evidence of adding vitamin C to iron for treating iron deficiency anemia is lacking. Aims Protocol for current systematic review was prepared and registered with the aim to generate evidence on role of vitamin C in addition to iron for treatment of anemia. Materials and Methods Present protocol has been prepared based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and registered with International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews. Data extraction will be done by the reviewers independently. Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool will be used for risk of bias assessment. Results For primary outcome and each of the other outcomes pairwise random effects meta-analysis and network meta-analysis will be performed. Sensitivity analysis will be performed in case of any heterogeneity is detected to find out the difference of the effect estimation between subsets. Conclusions The evidence for role of vitamin C as an adjunct in iron and folic acid for treatment of anemia in adolescent girls will be generated once the systematic review and meta-analysis is completed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metals, including lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr) and copper (Cu), have been associated with neurodevelopment; iron (Fe) plays a role in the metabolism and neurotoxicity of metals, suggesting Fe may mediate metal-neurodevelopment associations. However, no study to date has examined Fe as a mediator of the association between metal mixtures and neurodevelopment. OBJECTIVE We assessed Fe status as a mediator of a mixture of Pb, Mn, Cr and Cu in relation to verbal learning and memory in a cohort of Italian adolescents. METHODS We used cross-sectional data from 383 adolescents (10-14 years) in the Public Health Impact of Metals Exposure Study. Metals were quantified in blood (Pb) or hair (Mn, Cr, Cu) using ICP-MS, and three markers of Fe status (blood hemoglobin, serum ferritin and transferrin) were quantified using luminescence assays or immunoassays. Verbal learning and memory were assessed using the California Verbal Learning Test for Children (CVLT-C). We used Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression Causal Mediation Analysis to estimate four mediation effects: the natural direct effect (NDE), natural indirect effect (NIE), controlled direct effect (CDE) and total effect (TE). Beta (β) coefficients and 95 % credible intervals (CIs) were estimated for all effects. RESULTS The metal mixture was jointly associated with a greater number of words recalled on the CVLT-C, but these associations were not mediated by Fe status. For example, when ferritin was considered as the mediator, the NIE for long delay free recall was null (β = 0.00; 95 % CI = -0.22, 0.23). Conversely, the NDE (β = 0.23; 95 % CI = 0.01, 0.44) indicated a beneficial association of the mixture with recall that operated independently of Fe status. CONCLUSION An industry-relevant metal mixture was associated with learning and memory, but there was no evidence of mediation by Fe status. Further studies in populations with Fe deficiency and greater variation in metal exposure are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can control several biological processes. Thus, the existence of these molecules plays a significant role in regulating human iron metabolism or homeostasis. PURPOSE The study aimed to determine the role of circulating microRNAs and hepcidin in controlling iron homeostasis and evaluating possible anemia among school children. METHODS The study was based on a biochemical and cross-sectional survey study that included three hundred fifty school children aged 12-18 years old. RT-PCR and immunoassay analysis were accomplished to estimate iron concentration, Hgb, serum ferritin (SF), soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), total body iron stores (TIBs), total oxidative stress (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and miRNAs; miR-146a, miR-129b, and miR-122 in 350 school adolescents. RESULTS Iron disorders were cross-sectionally predicted in 28.54% of the study population; they were classified into 14.26% with ID, 5.7% with IDA, and 8.6% with iron overload. The overall proportion of iron depletion was significantly higher in girls (20.0%) than in boys (8.6%). MicroRNAs; miR-146a, miR-125b, and miR-122 were significantly upregulated with lower hepcidin expression in adolescence with ID and IDA compared to iron-overloaded subjects, whereas downregulation of these miRNAs was linked with higher hepcidin. Also, a significant correlation was recorded between miRNAs, hepcidin levels, AGP, hs-CRP, TAC, and other iron-related indicators. CONCLUSION Molecular microRNAs such as miR-146a, miR-125b, and miR-122 were shown to provide an additional means of controlling or regulating cellular iron uptake or metabolism either via the oxidative stress pathway or regulation of hepcidin expression via activating genes encoding Hfe and Hjv activators, which promote iron regulation. Thus, circulating miRNAs as molecular markers and serum hepcidin could provide an additional means of controlling or regulating cellular iron and be associated as valuable markers in diagnosing and treating cases with different iron deficiencies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Diagnosing von Willebrand Disease (VWD) in adolescent females is challenging as menstruation and physiologic stress elevate von Willebrand factor (VWF) laboratory values. AIM To develop a VWF prediction model for adolescent females based on initial VWF results. METHODS We identified female patients aged 9 to 21 years with any VWF laboratory test over a 5-year period (2017-2021) at any Texas Children's Hospital facility. Patient demographics, VWF testing, haemoglobin concentration, serum ferritin and site of clinical testing were collected (initial and subsequent laboratory evaluations). A Bayesian linear regression model was developed. Prediction intervals were analysed to identify thresholds for patients in whom repeat testing was unlikely to identify low VWF levels (< 50%), consistent with VWD. RESULTS A total of 6125 adolescent females underwent VWF testing; 1204 (19.7%) had repeat testing. Based on the prediction model, initial VWF antigen values of 80%, 90% and ≥100% carried a 92.6%, 96.6% and ≥98.0% probability of having repeat normal repeat VWF values, respectively. Subjects assessed in outpatient adolescent medicine or gynaecology clinics were more likely to have low VWF values compared to those assessed in the acute care setting (p < .001). Median presenting haemoglobin and serum ferritin were 12.4 g/dL and 13 ng/mL, respectively and were similar in those with normal versus low VWF antigen values. CONCLUSION Repeat testing in adolescent females whose initial VWF antigen values are ≥90% is unlikely to identify additional patients with VWD. Iron deficiency screening should be performed in all adolescent females.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand the extent to which adolescent awareness about anaemia and anaemia prevention can be changed by nutrition messages received at school. DESIGN Mixed-methods pre-post intervention study. SETTING Three government schools in Bagalkot, Belagavi and Raichur districts of Karnataka, India. POPULATION Students of grade six and seven and teachers involved in implementing the intervention. METHODS An educational intervention was co-developed by school teachers and nutrition experts using locally adapted resource materials that consisted of lectures, role play and practical demonstrations. Seven half-hour educational sessions were delivered by school teachers over 7 weeks to 455 students. Pre- and post-intervention tests measured changes in adolescents' knowledge about anaemia. Semi-structured in-depth interviews with teachers and focus groups with students explored their reactions to the intervention. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Knowledge score related to anaemia. RESULTS The percentage of children with correct scores increased by 7.3-49.0 percentage points for the tested questions after implementation of the intervention. The mean knowledge score increased by 3.67 ± 0.17 (p < 0.01). During interviews, teachers and students highlighted high acceptance of the intervention and materials, an increase in awareness, a positive attitude towards changing behaviour around diet, an increase in the demand for iron and folic acid supplements and improved sharing of messages learned with peers and families. Challenges expressed included need for further training, time limitations and hesitancy in teaching about menstruation and pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS Educational interventions carried out for adolescents by teachers in schools are effective in improving awareness and attitude related to anaemia and its prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children in foster care are classified as a highly vulnerable population and struggle with both physical and mental health problems. Medical conditions, like poor nutritional status, remain understudied in children in foster care. To our knowledge, few studies in children in U.S. foster care have quantified the prevalence of anemia, and no studies have examined the association between anemia status and relevant developmental and behavioral outcomes. OBJECTIVE/AIMS (1) To determine the prevalence of anemia among children in or adopted from Pennsylvania foster care, between the ages of six months to ten years and (2) To examine if a child's anemia status is associated with greater odds of relevant developmental and behavioral diagnoses. METHODS We conducted a secondary data analysis utilizing the Medicaid Analytic eXtract database between 2010-2015. Children six months-ten years were included in the analysis if they were in or had been adopted from Pennsylvania foster care. Logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with 95% confidence intervals for the association between iron status and health outcomes. RESULTS A total of 50,311 children were included in our sample, of which 1,365 children (2.7%) were diagnosed with anemia. Children diagnosed with anemia had greater odds of delayed milestones (AOR: 2.38 [1.64-3.45]), specific delays in development (AOR: 1.59 [1.23-2.07]), adjustment disorder (AOR: 1.59 [1.06-2.39]), and irritability (AOR: 10.57 [3.36-33.25]), than children not diagnosed with anemia. CONCLUSION The prevalence of anemia among children between six months-ten years in or adopted from the Pennsylvania foster care system is within the national rate of U.S. childhood anemia. Odds of several relevant developmental and behavioral diagnoses were greater among children diagnosed with anemia than children who were not.

Abstract
For reproductive-aged women, the symptom of heavy menstrual bleeding is highly prevalent and a major contributor to iron deficiency and its most severe manifestation, iron deficiency anemia. It is recognized that these 2 clinical entities are not only highly prevalent, but their interrelationship is poorly appreciated and frequently normalized by society, healthcare providers, and affected girls and women themselves. Both heavy menstrual bleeding and iron deficiency, with or without anemia, adversely impact quality of life-heavy menstrual bleeding during the episodes of bleeding and iron deficiency on a daily basis. These combined issues adversely affect the lives of reproductive-aged girls and women of all ages, from menarche to menopause, and their often-insidious nature frequently leads to normalization. The effects on cognitive function and the related work and school absenteeism and presenteeism can undermine the efforts and function of women in all walks of life, be they students, educators, employers, or employees. There is also an increasing body of evidence that suggests that iron deficiency, even in early pregnancy, may adversely impact fetal neurodevelopment with enduring effects on a spectrum of cognitive and psychological disorders, critically important evidence that begs the normalization of iron stores in reproductive-aged women. The authors seek to raise individual, societal, and professional awareness of this underappreciated situation in a fashion that leads to meaningful and evidence-based changes in clinical guidance and healthcare policy directed at preventing, screening, diagnosing, and appropriately managing both disorders. This manuscript provides evidence supporting the need for action and describes the elements necessary to address this pervasive set of conditions that not only affect reproductive-aged girls and women but also the lives of children everywhere.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Iron is essential to brain function, and iron deficiency during youth may adversely impact neurodevelopment. Understanding the developmental time course of iron status and its association with neurocognitive functioning is important for identifying windows for intervention. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to characterize developmental change in iron status and understand its association with cognitive performance and brain structure during adolescence using data from a large pediatric health network. METHODS This study included a cross-sectional sample of 4899 participants (2178 males; aged 8-22 y at the time of participation, M [SD] = 14.24 [3.7]) who were recruited from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia network. Prospectively collected research data were enriched with electronic medical record data that included hematological measures related to iron status, including serum hemoglobin, ferritin, and transferrin (33,015 total samples). At the time of participation, cognitive performance was assessed using the Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery, and brain white matter integrity was assessed using diffusion-weighted MRI in a subset of individuals. RESULTS Developmental trajectories were characterized for all metrics and revealed that sex differences emerged after menarche such that females had reduced iron status relative to males [all R2partial > 0.008; all false discovery rates (FDRs) < 0.05]. Higher socioeconomic status was associated with higher hemoglobin concentrations throughout development (R2partial = 0.005; FDR < 0.001), and the association was greatest during adolescence. Higher hemoglobin concentrations were associated with better cognitive performance during adolescence (R2partial = 0.02; FDR < 0.001) and mediated the association between sex and cognition (mediation effect = -0.107; 95% CI: -0.191, -0.02). Higher hemoglobin concentration was also associated with greater brain white matter integrity in the neuroimaging subsample (R2partial = 0.06, FDR = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS Iron status evolves during youth and is lowest in females and individuals of low socioeconomic status during adolescence. Diminished iron status during adolescence has consequences for neurocognition, suggesting that this critical period of neurodevelopment may be an important window for intervention that has the potential to reduce health disparities in at-risk populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biomarker concentrations of metals are associated with neurodevelopment, and these associations may be modified by nutritional status (e.g., iron deficiency). No prior study on associations of metal mixtures with neurodevelopment has assessed effect modification by iron status. OBJECTIVES We aimed to quantify associations of an industry-relevant metal mixture with verbal learning and memory among adolescents, and to investigate the modifying role of iron status on those associations. METHODS We used cross-sectional data from 383 Italian adolescents (10-14 years) living in proximity to ferroalloy industry. Verbal learning and memory was assessed using the California Verbal Learning Test for Children (CVLT-C), and metals were quantified in hair (manganese, copper, chromium) or blood (lead) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Serum ferritin, a proxy for iron status, was measured using immunoassays. Covariate-adjusted associations of the metal mixture with CVLT subtests were estimated using Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression, and modification of the mixture associations by ferritin was examined. RESULTS Compared to the 50th percentile of the metal mixture, the 90th percentile was associated with a 0.12 standard deviation [SD] (95% CI = -0.27, 0.50), 0.16 SD (95% CI = -0.11, 0.44), and 0.11 SD (95% CI = -0.20, 0.43) increase in the number of words recalled for trial 5, long delay free, and long delay cued recall, respectively. For an increase from its 25th to 75th percentiles, copper was beneficially associated the recall trials when other metals were fixed at their 50th percentiles (for example, trial 5 recall: β = 0.31, 95% CI = 0.14, 0.48). The association between copper and trial 5 recall was stronger at the 75th percentile of ferritin, compared to the 25th or 50th percentiles. CONCLUSIONS In this metal mixture, copper was beneficially associated with neurodevelopment, which was more apparent at higher ferritin concentrations. These findings suggest that metal associations with neurodevelopment may depend on iron status, which has important public health implications.

Abstract
Children's developing brains are susceptible to pesticides. Less is known about the effect of exposure to chlorpyrifos and pyrethroids on executive functions (EF). We measured urinary 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), a metabolite of chlorpyrifos, and urinary 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA), a general, nonspecific metabolite of pyrethroids in first-grade children from Montevideo, Uruguay (n = 241, age 80.6 ± 6.4 months, 58.1% boys). EFs were assessed with the Intra-dimensional/Extra-dimensional shift (IED), Spatial Span (SSP), and Stockings of Cambridge (SOC) tests from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated (CANTAB) Battery. General intellectual ability (GIA) was assessed using the Woodcock-Muñoz Cognitive battery. Median (range) urinary TCPy and 3-PBA levels were 16.7 (1.9, 356.9) ng/mg of creatinine and 3.3 (0.3, 110.6) ng/mg of creatinine, respectively. In multivariable generalized linear models, urinary TCPy was inversely associated with postdimensional errors on the IED task β [95% CI]: -0.11 [-0.17, -0.06]. Urinary 3-PBA was inversely associated with the total number of trials -0.07 [-0.10, -0.04], and the total number of errors -0.12 [-0.18, -0.07] on the IED task. When TCPy and 3-PBA were modeled together, the associations did not differ from single-metabolite models. We found no evidence of effect modification by blood lead level (BLL). Pesticide exposure may affect EF performance in urban children.

Abstract
Introduction Nutrition education targeting adolescents' health has the potential to enhance their well-being into adulthood. This study assessed the impact of nutrition education on the knowledge of iron and iron-rich food intake practices of adolescents living in rural communities in Ghana. Method An intervention study was conducted among 137 adolescents; 69 were assigned to the intervention group and 68 to the control group. Participants and guardians in the intervention group were involved in the nutrition education programme for six months. Participants in both groups completed sociodemographic, knowledge of iron, and iron-rich food intake practice questionnaires at pre- and postintervention. Data were analyzed by chi-square and t-tests. Results At postintervention, the mean knowledge score (p < 0.05) in the intervention group and control group was 5.3 ± 1.7 and 3.9 ± 1.9, respectively. Interventions (76%) and controls (46%) had good knowledge status. The mean knowledge score of participants with good knowledge status in the intervention group was 6.1 ± 0.8 (p < 0.05), and the control group was 5.6 ± 0.7 (p < 0.05). Forty-two percent of participants in the interventions and 26% in the controls had good food intake status. Participants with good food intake status had mean food intake scores of 3.2 ± 0.4 (p < 0.05) and 3.8 ± 0.7 (p < 0.05) for the intervention and control groups, respectively. Both groups increased and had the same mean food intake score (1.5 ± 1.4, p > 0.05), however, relatively higher in the intervention group. Conclusion Nutrition education improved the knowledge of iron and iron-rich food intake practices of participants in the intervention group compared to the control group. Nutrition education should be a critical component in the management and prevention of micronutrient deficiency in adolescents.

Abstract
This systematic review aims to assess the association between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and restless legs syndrome (RLS) in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Databases were searched for original articles that reported prevalence data on ADHD and RLS until January 24th, 2023. Two independent reviewers evaluated the quality of the articles using the National Institutes of Health assessment tool. Among the 208 articles identified between 1996 and 2022, 29 were included. In large general population studies, 2.6-15.3% of participants met the RLS criteria, of which 3.2-17.4% presented with ADHD. In the ADHD group, RLS symptoms ranged from 11 to 42.9% in children and 20-33.0% in adults. This suggests a strong co-occurrence between RLS and ADHD. A common characteristic of these conditions is sleep fragmentation, as discussed in the reviewed papers. Although large-scale studies with comparable diagnostic criteria across the lifespan are required, our findings may advocate a possible common physiological pathway, including sleep fragmentation and dopaminergic system impairment.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between nut consumption and academic performance in Spanish adolescents and to explore the role of sociodemographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle covariates on this association. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out using a food frequency questionnaire for estimating nut consumption in the number of 20-30 g servings per week, and academic performance data were obtained from school records. Analyses of covariance were adjusted for sociodemographic, anthropometric and lifestyle covariates, including total energy intake. RESULTS Among the 846 adolescents included in the analyses (55.3% girls, age range from 12 to 17 years), the mean ± standard deviation consumption of nuts was 2.7 ± 2.8 servings per week, while the mean of all school grades recorded was 6.5 ± 2.0. Furthermore, compared to no consumption, the consumption of ≥ 3 nut servings per week was consistently associated with higher grades in language (p for trend = 0.005), combination of language and math (p for trend = 0.026), grade point average (p for trend = 0.039), and combination of all school records (p for trend = 0.046). These associations were observed regardless of all covariates considered, although sex and socioeconomic level played a significant role in the completely adjusted models. CONCLUSION Nut consumption is associated with higher academic performance in a representative sample of Spanish adolescents. These cross-sectional results should be confirmed in longitudinal and intervention studies.

Abstract
Iron deficiency (ID) is a prevalent nutritional deficiency affecting children/adolescents worldwide. We reported (1) the prevalence of ID and ID with anemia (IDA) among Chinese school-aged adolescents, (2) clinical and dietary predictors of iron status, and (3) its impact on health-related qualities of life (HRQoL). This cross-sectional study recruited 183 boys and 340 girls (mean age = 17.55) from 16 schools in Hong Kong. ID is defined as serum ferritin <15 μg/L. The participants reported their dietary habits, menstrual patterns (girls), and HRQoL using structured questionnaires. The overall prevalence of ID was 11.1%. None of the boys had ID or IDA. Among girls, the rate of ID was 17.1% and IDA was 10.9%. One-third (36.3%) reported a regular habit of skipping ≥1 meal/day. Lower ferritin was found in adolescents who skipped meals (Est = -35.1, p = 0.017). Lower ferritin is correlated with poorer school functioning (Est = 0.81, p = 0.045) and fatigue (Est = 0.92, p = 0.016). Skipping meals is associated with poorer physical (p = 0.0017) and school functioning (p = 0.027). To conclude, 1 in 10 school-aged adolescents in Hong Kong are iron-deficient. The ID rate in girls (17.1%) is similar to that in other industrialized countries (5.2-16.6%). Future work should promote awareness on the potential health consequences of poor dietary habits on ID and the well-being of adolescents.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Women and girls with bleeding disorders face multiple bleeding challenges throughout their life. The most significant morbidity and mortality are due to heavy menstrual bleeding and postpartum hemorrhage in their reproductive years. The ASH/ISTH/NHF/WFH 2021 guidelines on diagnosing and managing von Willebrand disease (VWD) provide several new updates. AREAS COVERED Women with VWD have a higher prevalence of heavy menstrual bleeding. The subpopulation of adolescents is particularly vulnerable, as the diagnosis is often delayed with increased comorbidity of iron deficiency anemia and associated symptoms. A detailed review is done on the prevalence of bleeding-related complications, especially heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) and post-partum hemorrhage (PPH). The management strategies are also reviewed in detail, with a specific focus on the target factor levels and the use of antifibrinolytics. EXPERT OPINION The 2021 ASH/ISTH/NHF/WFH diagnostic and management recommendations are reviewed with a specific focus on hormonal methods of HMB management and antifibrinolytics in this situation. The reviewed topics include neuraxial anesthesia, factor cutoff, and tranexamic acid use in the postpartum period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the magnitude and the determinants of iron deficiency among adolescents aged 10-19 years in the State of Qatar. DESIGN A cross-sectional study design was used to conduct the study. SETTING Primary healthcare centres covering the three main geographical areas. One health centre was selected randomly from each region catchment areas: Northern, Central and Western. PARTICIPANTS Four hundred and fifty adolescents aged 10-19 years of all nationalities were enrolled in the study. OUTCOME MEASURES Serum ferritin cut-off level used to diagnose iron deficiency (<15 µg/L), with normal C reactive protein. RESULTS The mean age of the participants was 14.00±2.920, and more than half of the participating adolescents were among 10-14 years old age group (56.9%). Fifty-five per cent of the study participants were Non-Qatari, and females consisted of 70.0% of the participants. The prevalence of iron deficiency was 26.4%. Iron deficiency was significantly associated with gender, nationality, attaining menarche and consumption of iron absorption enhancers (citrus fruits and juice). CONCLUSION Iron deficiency among adolescents is of moderate public health concern in the country, according to the classification of the WHO. The estimated prevalence of iron deficiency was close to what was found in other low-income and middle-income countries; however, it is still behind the developed countries. Gender, attaining menarche and dietary habits are among the important factors that are associated with iron deficiency. Thus, there is a need to coordinate efforts and resources to address this issue by implementing effective strategies at the community and primary healthcare levels.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Exposure to environmental metals, like lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and methylmercury (Me-Hg), has consistently been implicated in neurodevelopmental dysfunction. Recent research has focused on identifying modifying factors of metal neurotoxicity in childhood, such as age, sex, and co-exposures. Iron (Fe) status is critical for normal cognitive development during childhood, and current mechanistic, animal, and human evidence suggests that Fe status may be a modifier or mediator of associations between environmental metals and neurodevelopment. The goals of this review are to describe the current state of the epidemiologic literature on the role of Fe status (i.e., hemoglobin, ferritin, blood Fe concentrations) and Fe supplementation in the relationship between metals and children's neurodevelopment, and to identify research gaps. RECENT FINDINGS We identified 30 studies in PubMed and EMBASE that assessed Fe status as a modifier, mediator, or co-exposure of associations of Pb, Me-Hg, Mn, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), or metal mixtures measured in early life (prenatal period through 8 years of age) with cognition in children. In experimental studies, co-supplementation of Fe and Zn was associated with better memory and cognition than supplementation with either metal alone. Several observational studies reported interactions between Fe status and Pb, Mn, Zn, or As in relation to developmental indices, memory, attention, and behavior, whereby adverse associations of metals with cognition were worse among Fe-deficient children compared to Fe-sufficient children. Only two studies quantified joint associations of complex metal mixtures that included Fe with neurodevelopment, though findings from these studies were not consistent. Findings support memory and attention as two possible cognitive domains that may be both vulnerable to Fe deficiency and a target of metals toxicity. Major gaps in the literature remain, including evaluating Fe status as a modifier or mediator of metal mixtures and cognition. Given that Fe deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide, characterizing Fe status in studies of metals toxicity is important for informing public health interventions.

Abstract
Transfusion of packed red blood cells (pRBCs) saves lives, but iron overload limits survival of chronically transfused patients. Quality control methods, which involve entering pRBC units and removing them from the blood supply, reveal that hemoglobin (38.5-79.9 g) and heme iron (133.42-276.89 mg) vary substantially between pRBCs. Yet, neither hemoglobin nor iron content can be quantified for individual clinically used pRBCs leading to rules of thumb for pRBC transfusions. Keeping their integrity, the authors seek to predict hemoglobin/iron content of any given pRBC unit applying eight machine learning models on 6,058 pRBCs. Based on thirteen features routinely collected during blood donation, production and quality control testing, the model with best trade-off between performance and complexity in hemoglobin/iron content prediction is identified. Validation of this model in an independent cohort of 2637 pRBCs confirms an adjusted R2 > 0.9 corresponding to a mean absolute prediction error of ≤1.43 g hemoglobin/4.96 mg iron (associated standard deviation: ≤1.13 g hemoglobin/3.92 mg iron). Such unprecedented precise prediction enables reliable pRBC dosing per pharmaceutically active agent, and monitoring iron uptake in patients and individual iron loss in donors. The model is implemented in a free open source web application to facilitate clinical application.

Abstract
Childhood obesity is a major health problem. We examined differences between children with obesity and normal weight in nutritional and inflammation biomarkers. A cross-sectional study was conducted among healthy children aged 10-12 years from Arab villages in Israel. Parents were interviewed regarding sociodemographic and children's health status. Body weight and height measurements were performed and weight categories were defined using the 2007 WHO growth curves. Blood samples were tested for complete blood count, levels of iron, ferritin, lipids, uric acid, and C-reactive protein (CRP). Overall, 146 children (59.0% males, mean age = 11.3 [SD = 0.5]) were enrolled. In total 43.8%, 14.1% and 42.3% of the participants had normal weight, overweight and obesity, respectively. A multivariable logistic regression model showed that children with overweight and obesity had lower iron, and HDL-C levels than children with normal weight. Levels of CRP, uric acid, LDL-C and lymphocytes were higher among children with overweight and obesity. In conclusion, our findings highlight the worse metabolic and nutritional status in overweight and obese children. Such markers play a role in metabolic syndrome, thus suggesting that metabolic syndrome might start in childhood.

Abstract
Anemia is a major public health problem in many areas of Southeast Asia. Ascertaining anemia and defining its underlying causes is essential for providing appropriate care, management, and establishment of a control program. Limited studies on these have been carried out on people living at the borders of Thailand, Lao PDR, and Cambodia. This cross-sectional study was done in four areas along the borders of Thailand, Lao PDR, and Cambodia. Blood specimens were collected from subjects aged 15-18 years in four districts including Kantharalak, Si Sa Ket province (n = 36), Nam Khun (n = 109), Nam Yuen (n = 98), and Na Chaluai (n = 128), Ubon Ratchathani province, Thailand. RBC parameters were recorded, and serum ferritin (SF) level was measured. Diagnosis of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies was based on hemoglobin (Hb) and DNA analyses. Measurement of C-reactive protein was performed to exclude false-negative result of iron deficiency. The prevalence of anemia was found to be 25.1%. ID accounted for only 10.5%. Various types of thalassemia were identified in 67.7% of the subjects. The overall prevalence of thalassemia included 3.5% α0-thalassemia, 0.8% β-thalassemia, 47.7% Hb E, and 53.6% α+-thalassemia. The proportions of ID, thalassemia and combined ID and thalassemia among anemic subjects were 6.5%, 66.6%, and 20.4%, respectively. The results indicate that thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies rather than ID are major causes of anemia in Thailand-Lao PDR-Cambodia triangle. This information should prove useful for implementing an anemia control program in the regions.

Abstract
Cognitive impairment has been associated with anemia and iron deficiency; however, brain electrophysiological studies correlating red blood cell (RBC) indices and iron status to cognition in adulthood are scarce. We aimed to assess neurocognitive function in young adults of the general population and its correlation with RBC indices and iron status. Neurocognitive function was investigated using scalp-recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) within the context of a task-switching paradigm. ERPs and test performance were also compared across groups of "high"/"low" RBC and iron indices. Working memory was examined using the digit span test, in which mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and ferritin were found to be significant predictors of test performance, with higher MCH/MCV/ferritin being associated with better test scores. In the switching task, MCH, MCV, and ferritin were found to be significant predictors of task performance, with higher MCH/MCV/ferritin levels associated with a lower percentage of errors. Electrophysiological results showed that MCH and MCV were significant predictors of ERPs amplitude, with lower MCH/MCV levels associated with greater amplitude, which may reflect compensatory processes. P1, N1, P2, and P3 were greater for the low MCH/MCV groups. This is the first evidence of association between levels of MCH/MCV and brain function while engaged in an executive function task; possibly reflecting brain iron availability.

Abstract
Background Iron status is considered as a continuum from an iron deficiency with anaemia, without anaemia, varying amounts of stored iron to iron overload. The burden of Plasmodium falciparum infections is typically high among school-aged children (SAC). Nonetheless, SAC are often less likely to be covered by malaria interventions, making them a group with an untreated reservoir of parasite transmission. This study aimed to assess the effects of asymptomatic and clinical malaria infections on biochemical markers of iron status among SAC in Malawi. Methods Data from the 2015–2016 Malawi Micronutrient Survey (MNS) was used and multivariable logistic regression models using a generalized estimating equation to account for the complex cluster survey design were constructed. Blood samples of 684 children aged 5 to 14 years old were evaluated for clinical and asymptomatic malaria infections. Furthermore, blood samples were used to estimate haemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin (SF) and, soluble transferrin receptors (sTfR) concentrations. Results Of the 684 SAC analysed, approximately 42% had asymptomatic malaria, while 41.0% had clinical malaria. Anaemia (low Hb levels), iron deficiency (low SF concentration), and functional iron deficiency (high sTfR levels) were found in 20%, 5%, and 30% of the children, respectively. School-aged children with asymptomatic malaria had increased odds of being anaemic (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 3.71, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.29–5.99) and increased levels of sTfR (aOR: 3.00, 95% CI 2.01–4.47). Similarly, SAC with clinical malaria had increased odds of being anaemic (aOR: 3.54, 95% CI 2.19–5.72) and increased levels of sTfR (aOR: 3.02, 95% CI 2.02–4.52). Conclusions Both asymptomatic and clinical malaria were independent risk factors for anaemia and functional iron deficiency (FID). The notion that asymptomatic and clinical malaria were associated with both anaemia and FID underscores the need for public health programmers to consider adding mass screening and treatment for malaria to existing school-based health programmes. Abstract
The childhood years represent a period of increased nutrient requirements during which a balanced diet is important to ensure optimal growth and development. The aim of this study was to examine food and nutrient intakes and compliance with recommendations in school-aged children in Ireland and to examine changes over time. Analyses were based on two National Children’s Food Surveys; NCFS (2003–2004) (n 594) and NCFS II (2017–2018) (n 600) which estimated food and nutrient intakes in nationally representative samples of children (5–12 years) using weighed food records (NCFS: 7-d; NCFS II: 4-d). This study found that nutrient intakes among school-aged children in Ireland are generally in compliance with recommendations; however, this population group have higher intakes of saturated fat, free sugars and salt, and lower intakes of dietary fibre than recommended. Furthermore, significant proportions have inadequate intakes of vitamin D, Ca, Fe and folate. Some of the key dietary changes that have occurred since the NCFS (2003–2004) include decreased intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages, fruit juice, milk and potatoes, and increased intakes of wholemeal/brown bread, high-fibre ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, porridge, pasta and whole fruit. Future strategies to address the nutrient gaps identified among this population group could include the continued promotion of healthy food choices (including education around ‘healthy’ lifestyles and food marketing restrictions), improvements of the food supply through reformulation (fat, sugar, salt, dietary fibre), food fortification for micronutrients of concern (voluntary or mandatory) and/or nutritional supplement recommendations (for nutrients unlikely to be sufficient from food intake alone).

Abstract
Purpose The clinical presentation of iron deficiency is not well understood. We aimed to identify the clinical manifestations of iron deficiency without anemia in women. Patients and Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of women who visited the general internal medicine outpatient department of a university hospital in Japan between 2016 and 2022. Women who were prescribed iron supplements were included in the study. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin levels below 12 g/dl. Iron deficiency was defined as serum ferritin levels < 30.0 μg/l. The primary outcome was the difference in symptoms between patients with iron deficiency with and without anemia. The secondary outcome was the ratio of symptom, hemoglobin, and serum ferritin improvement (levels > 30.0 μg/l after treatment), comparing the measurements at the beginning and after supplementation. Results A total of 147 women were included in the final analysis. There were no significant differences in the initial symptoms and the ratio of symptom improvement between the groups. Compared to patients with iron deficiency anemia, patients with iron deficiency without anemia had high initial serum ferritin levels (14.8 vs 7.1 μg/l, p<0.001), and hemoglobin (13.2 vs 9.9 g/dl, p<0.001). Iron supplements significantly improved the serum ferritin level in two groups and the hemoglobin in iron deficiency anemia. After treatment, iron deficiency without anemia still had high serum ferritin levels (37.7 vs 28.2 μg/l, p=0.017) and hemoglobin (13.3 vs 12.3 g/dl, p < 0.001). Conclusion There were no differences in any of the investigated symptoms and the ratio of the symptom improvement depending on the anemic state in iron deficiency. After iron supplementation, the serum ferritin levels in the iron deficiency without anemia group improved. Hemoglobin and serum ferritin in iron deficiency without anemia were still highly comparable to that of iron deficiency anemia.

Abstract
Background Iron deficiency anemia is a common problem among adolescent girls and women, with significant consequences on personal health. One of the causes of iron deficiency anemia is inadequate nutritional intake. This study explores iron-deficiency anemia and associated factors among adolescent girls and women in a rural area of Jatinangor, Indonesia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 95 adolescent girls and 85 women between April and November 2018. Cluster random sampling was used to select the participants from seven villages in the Jatinangor district. After obtaining informed consent, we collected sociodemographic data, menstrual histories, and related data, including nutritional intake using 24-hour dietary recall. Anthropometrics were gathered to determine the body mass Index (BMI), and venous blood samples were analyzed for complete blood count and hemoglobin levels. Descriptive statistics followed by bivariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to identify anemia-associated factors. Results The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among the girls was 21.1% and 9.4% among women, with an average hemoglobin level in adolescents of 10.75 g/dL (± 0.79) and in adults 11.20 g/dL (± 0.61), whereas MCV was 74.49±8.22 fL in adolescents and 7.61±8.62 fL in adults. The majority of our samples were not stunted in growth and were also within a normal weight range. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that protein intake (OR=0.25; 95% CI 0.11–0.58) was a positively associated factor with anemia. Conclusion The prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia in this study represents a mild public health problem in the study sample. Based on the hemoglobin level, anemia, can be classified as moderate in adolescents and mild in adults. Low levels of MCH indicate iron-deficiency anemia. Sufficient protein intake did not prevent anemia due to macronutrient and micronutrient intake.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Frequent and severe bleeding events (SBE) in patients with inherited qualitative platelet disorders Bernard-Soulier Syndrome (BSS) and Glanzmann Thrombasthenia (GT) can lead to secondary iron deficiency anemia (IDA). SBE are primarily treated with platelet transfusions or recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) infusions. The impact of IDA on bleeding management and disease outcomes is understudied. AIM To evaluate bleeding management, outcomes, and any association with IDA in pediatric patients with BSS and GT. METHODS Retrospective chart-review of pediatric patients with BSS or GT followed at a single hemophilia treatment center between 2007 and 2019. RESULTS We identified 14 patients with BSS (n = 2) or GT (n = 12). Patients received rFVIIa (7%), platelet transfusions (7%), or a combination of both (57%) for SBE. Eleven patients (79%) had IDA requiring oral and/or intravenous iron replacement and 50% required red blood cell transfusions. Due to recurrent SBE and refractory IDA, three patients (21%) received rFVIIa prophylaxis at 90 μg/kilogram 2-3 times/week for ≥15 months. Patients initiated on rFVIIa prophylaxis had a median baseline hemoglobin of 9.8 g/dL (min-max: 8.0-10.7 g/dL) compared to 11.7 g/dL (8.4-13.8 g/dL) for patients treated on-demand. Following initiation of rFVIIa prophylaxis, median hemoglobin and ferritin increased by 1.3 g/dL (0.7-2.5 g/dL) and 14.6 ng/mL (0.2-42.9 ng/mL), respectively, and bleeding rates were reduced by 7-78%. CONCLUSION IDA is a known complication of recurrent bleeding events in individuals with inherited bleeding disorders. Routine monitoring for IDA may help improve bleeding management and reduce bleed burden in BSS/GT.

Abstract
This study assesses the prevalence and correlates of anemia among adolescents living in the war-affected region of Hodeida in Yemen. A secondary objective was to examine the effect of a nutrition education intervention on hemoglobin levels among anemic adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of adolescents aged 15–19 years in Hodeida (n = 400). A questionnaire was administered to inquire about demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle and clinical characteristics. Capillary blood was obtained, anthropometric characteristics were measured and stool samples were collected. As for the secondary objective, anemic adolescents were randomly assigned to an intervention group (nutrition education and iron supplementation) and a control group (iron supplements only). The prevalence of anemia was 37.8%. Female gender, khat chewing, excessive menstruation, and experiencing headaches, fatigue, or dizziness were independent predictors of anemia. In contrast, adolescents who attended private schools, and reported snack consumption or handwashing had a significantly lower risk of anemia. A sample of 116 adolescents participated in the intervention (3 months). Hemoglobin levels were significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control. Our findings contribute to the identification of high-risk groups that should be targeted by context-specific interventions. The implemented multicomponent intervention may serve as a prototype for larger-scale preventive programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Iron supplementation is required for pediatric patients with intestinal failure (IF). There is a paucity of literature on optimal iron formulation and outcomes in this patient population that requires ongoing supplementation. The aim of this study was to assess outcomes in pediatric patients with IF receiving iron sucrose (IS) versus ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) iron infusions. METHODS This was a single-center observational cohort study of pediatric patients with IF requiring ongoing intravenous iron supplementation. Patients were transitioned from IS to FCM as iron therapy. Longitudinal linear mixed-effects models and generalized estimating equations were used to compare outcomes including hematologic, iron, and growth parameters for 12 months treatment duration on each iron formulation. Adverse effects were descriptively summarized. RESULTS Twenty-three patients were included. Sixteen received IS and later switched to FCM, 5 received IS only, and 2 received FCM only. Most patients' etiology of IF was short bowel syndrome (FCM: 81%, IS: 83%). No differences were seen over time for iron, hematologic, and growth metrics between IS and FCM. The median number of infusions over 12 months for those taking IS was 15 (IQR = 13 - 26) and 2 for FCM (IQR = 1 - 2). Asymptomatic hypophosphatemia was noted in both groups. Similar central line associated blood steam infection rates were noted. CONCLUSIONS IS and FCM infusions both maintained hematologic and iron parameters with no significant difference noted between the two types of iron though the number of FCM infusions was significantly less. No significant adverse effects were noted. CLINICAL RELEVANCY STATEMENT Pediatric patients with intestinal failure dependent on parenteral nutrition require ongoing iron supplementation. Though there are a variety of iron formulations available, there is a paucity of literature on how iron should be administered in this patient population. Practice varies widely among different institutions. In this study, pediatric patients with intestinal failure were transitioned from iron sucrose to ferric carboxymaltose infusions, and laboratory and clinical outcomes were compared. We found that patients had comparable hematologic and iron parameters with significantly fewer infusions needed in the ferric carboxymaltose group. Abstract
The present study was conducted to determine nutritional anaemia using haemoglobin levels of female nursing undergraduates studying at Farasan Island with the purpose to intervene at a point, before the potential problems become serious later in life. In total, 130 apparently healthy, female students of Department of Nursing were recruited by a random sampling method to collect information on socio-demographic, lifestyle and anthropogenic characteristics, and dietary habits including breakfast skipping. Haemoglobin content was estimated using Sahli's Haemoglobinometer and observations were interpreted as per WHO's criteria for anaemia. Body mass index (BMI) was recorded using a digital weighing machine. Correlation between haemoglobin concentration, breakfast skipping and body mass index of study participants was assessed by Pearson's correlation. Data analyses were done using Origin software. Overall, 51⋅6 % (n = 67) students were all together anaemic with 28⋅5 % (n = 37) had mild anaemia, 15⋅4 % (n = 20) moderate and 7⋅69 % (n = 10) had severe anaemia. Of these, 20⋅8 % (n = 27) were underweight, 63⋅8 % (n = 83) normal weight and 15⋅4 % (n = 20) were above normal weight (over weight and obese). The Hb content showed a positive correlation with the BMI and exhibited an increasing trend with increase in the BMI among study participants (P < 0⋅05). Questionnaire analyses revealed that the majority (96⋅9 %, n = 126) of students were taking junk food as bulk of their meal. A strong negative correlation was recorded between Hb contents and breakfast skipping tendencies (r = −0⋅987, P < 0⋅05). Findings of the present study are of high significance for public health professionals and educators to prioritise actions that could motivate these future nurses to adapt healthy lifestyles to strategically combat nutritional anaemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Iron deficiency is extremely common in adolescents with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) presenting to the emergency department; however, patients are rarely screened for this. The objective of this study was to evaluate screening for iron deficiency in adolescents presenting to the emergency department for HMB. METHODS This is a secondary analysis of a single-center, cross-sectional observational study using retrospective chart review. The study subjects are adolescents ages 11 to 19 years with International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification/International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification, codes for HMB who presented to the emergency department at a national tertiary care hospital from 2006 to 2018. Pregnant adolescents with HMB were excluded. Chart abstraction for demographic data, symptoms, laboratory tests, treatments, and outcomes was performed. The main outcome measure was the number of adolescents who had an iron evaluation in the emergency department and were discharged on oral iron. RESULTS Of the 258 nonpregnant adolescents who sought care for HMB in the emergency department, 225 (87.2%) were evaluated with serum hemoglobin testing. Ninety-four (41.7%) of those tested were anemic. Only 23 of the 258 patients (8.9%) had iron studies (serum ferritin) performed; 18 of 23 (78.3%) had iron deficiency and 21 of 23 (92.3%) were anemic. Subjects presenting with fatigue, headache, or palpitations were more likely to have iron studies performed than those without these symptoms (all P < 0.01). Thirty-two of the 258 subjects (12.4%) were discharged on oral iron therapy, which included only 15 of the 18 subjects (83.3%) with iron deficiency determined by ferritin testing. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents presenting to the emergency department with HMB are at significant risk of iron deficiency but are not being screened or treated, which may have significant consequences.

Abstract
Iron is needed for normal development in adolescence. Exposure to individual environmental metals (e.g., lead) has been associated with altered iron status in adolescence, but little is known about the cumulative associations of multiple metals with Fe status. We used data from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to examine associations between a metal mixture (lead, manganese, cadmium, selenium) and iron status in 588 U.S. adolescents (12-17 years). We estimated cumulative and interactive associations of the metal mixture with five iron status metrics using Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR). Higher concentrations of manganese and cadmium were associated with lower log-transformed ferritin concentrations. Interactions were observed between manganese, cadmium, and lead for ferritin and the transferrin receptor, where iron status tended to be worse at higher concentrations of all metals. These results may reflect competition between environmental metals and iron for cellular uptake. Mixed metal exposures may alter normal iron function, which has implications for adolescent development.

Abstract
Background
Hemophilic arthropathy results in pain, deformity, and disability with severe impairments, activity limitation, and thus productivity loss. Also patterns of treatment interfere with patients’ life, so the quality of life should be assessed when evaluating treatment. The aim of this work was to assess the quality of life of children with hemophilic arthropathy and its relation to clinical joint health.
Results
The study was carried out on fifty boys with hemophilic arthropathy. All patients were subjected to thorough local clinical assessment of the most affected and/or target joint using Hemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS 2.1) and assessment of quality of life using Haemo quality of life (Haemo-Qol) questionnaire children and parent versions. Among the fifty hemophilic patients, 36 (72%) patients were hemophilia A and 14 (28 %) patients were hemophilia B. The age at first hemarthrosis ranged from 1 to 8 years with a mean of 2.40±1.78. While the number of joints affected in the studied patients ranged from 2 to 13 joints with a mean of 7±3.25. As regards the severity, 23 patients (46%) had severe, and 27 (54%) had moderate hemophilia. Forty four (88%) patients had different degrees of anemia. There was significant correlation between child Haemo-QoL with degree of anemia (r = 0.291, P = 0.040), mainly with view and school dimensions. There were significant correlations between child and parent Haemo-QoL and HJHS with each of the following: factor activity level, duration of the disease, duration of joint disease, number of bleeding attacks last year, and number of joints affected. Synovectomy was done for 5 (10%) patients. The total child Haemo-QoL score was statistically significantly lower after the intervention (P=0.043), with a significant improvement in physical health, feeling, view, family, school and sports, treatment, and dealing dimensions. In the current study, there were significant positive correlations between child and parent Haemo-QoL and HJHS scores.
Conclusions
The quality of life in patients with hemophilic arthropathy was influenced by the joint health, factor activity level, disease duration, number of bleeding attacks, number of joints affected (during life), duration of joint disease, and presence of hepatitis C virus.

Abstract
Background Gender disparities in education continue to undermine girls' opportunities, despite enormous strides in recent years to improve primary enrolment and attainment for girls in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). At the regional, country and subnational levels gender gaps remain, with girls in many settings less likely to complete primary school, less likely to complete secondary, and often less likely to be literate than boys. The academic and policy literatures on the topic of gender-related barriers to girls' education are both extensive. However, there remain gaps in knowledge regarding which interventions are most likely to work in contexts with different combinations of barriers. Objectives This systematic review identified and assessed the strength of the evidence of interventions and exposures addressing gender-related barriers to schooling for girls in LMICs. Search Methods The AEA RCT Registry, Africa Bibliography, African Education Research Database, African Journals Online, DEC USAID, Dissertation Abstracts, EconLit, ELDIS, Evidence Hub, Global Index Medicus, IDEAS-Repec, Intl Clinical Trials Registry, NBER, OpenGrey, Open Knowledge Repository, POPLINE, PsychINFO, PubMed, Research for Development Outputs, ScienceDirect, Sociological Abstracts, Web of Science, as well as relevant organization websites were searched electronically in March and April of 2019. Further searches were conducted through review of bibliographies as well as through inquiries to authors of included studies, relevant researchers and relevant organizations, and completed in March 2020. Selection Criteria We included randomized controlled trials as well as quasi-experimental studies that used quantitative models that attempted to control for endogeneity. Manuscripts could be either published, peer-reviewed articles or grey literature such as working papers, reports and dissertations. Studies must have been published on or after 2000, employed an intervention or exposure that attempted to address a gender-related barrier to schooling, analyzed the effects of the intervention/exposure on at least one of our primary outcomes of interest, and utilized data from LMICs to be included. Data Collection and Analysis A team of reviewers was grouped into pairs to independently screen articles for relevance, extract data and assess risk of bias for each included study. A third reviewer assisted in resolving any disputes. Risk of bias was assessed either through the RoB 2 tool for experimental studies or the ROBINS-I tool for quasi-experimental studies. Due to the heterogeneity of study characteristics and reported outcome measures between studies, we applied the GRADE (Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach adapted for situations where a meta-analysis is not possible to synthesize the research. Results Interventions rated as effective exist for three gender-related barriers: inability to afford tuition and fees, lack of adequate food, and insufficient academic support. Promising interventions exist for three gender-related barriers: inadequate school access, inability to afford school materials, and lack of water and sanitation. More research is needed for the remaining 12 gender-related barriers: lack of support for girls' education, child marriage and adolescent pregnancy, lack of information on returns to education/alternative roles for women, school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV), lack of safe spaces and social connections, inadequate sports programs for girls, inadequate health and childcare services, inadequate life skills, inadequate menstrual hygiene management (MHM), poor policy/legal environment, lack of teaching materials and supplies, and gender-insensitive school environment. We find substantial gaps in the evidence. Several gender-related barriers to girls' schooling are under-examined. For nine of these barriers we found fewer than 10 relevant evaluations, and for five of the barriers-child marriage and adolescent pregnancy, SRGBV, inadequate sports programs for girls, inadequate health and childcare services, and inadequate MHM-we found fewer than five relevant evaluations; thus, more research is needed to understand the most effective interventions to address many of those barriers. Also, nearly half of programs evaluated in the included studies were multi-component, and most evaluations were not designed to tease out the effects of individual components. As a result, even when interventions were effective overall, it is often difficult to identify how much, if any, of the impact is attributable to a given program component. The combination of components varies between studies, with few comparable interventions, further limiting our ability to identify packages of interventions that work well. Finally, the context-specific nature of these barriers-whether a barrier exists in a setting and how it manifests and operates-means that a program that is effective in one setting may not be effective in another. Authors' Conclusions While some effective and promising approaches exist to address gender-related barriers to education for girls, evidence gaps exist on more than half of our hypothesized gender-related barriers to education, including lack of support for girls' education, SRGBV, lack of safe spaces and social connections, inadequate life skills, and inadequate MHM, among others. In some cases, despite numerous studies examining interventions addressing a specific barrier, studies either did not disaggregate results by sex, or they were not designed to isolate the effects of each intervention component. Differences in context and in implementation, such as the number of program components, curricula content, and duration of interventions, also make it difficult to compare interventions to one another. Finally, few studies looked at pathways between interventions and education outcomes, so the reasons for differences in outcomes largely remain unclear.
