Fluorescent solid-state strips based on SiO2 shell-stabilized perovskite nanocrystals applying for magnetic aptasensing detection of aflatoxin B1 toxin in food

In this work, the perovskite fluorescent nanocrystals (CsPbBr3) were successfully synthesized and wrapped with SiO2 shell, utilized for the assembly of solid-state detection strip capable of conveniently and specifically detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). The SiO2 coating aimed to enhance the stability of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. The resulting CsPbBr3@SiO2 material exhibited remarkable fluorescence properties, and further self-assembled onto solid-state plate, generating AFB1-specific quenched fluorescence at a specific wavelength of 515 nm. When combined with the capture of AFB1 by magnetic nanoparticles conjugated with aptamers (MNPs-Apt), it was achieved the good separation and specific detection of AFB1 toxin in food matrices. The constructed fluorescent solid-state detection strip based on CsPbBr3@SiO2 exhibited good response to AFB1 toxin within a linear range of 0.1-100 ng mL-1 and an impressive detection limit as low as 0.053 ng mL-1. This presents a new strategy for the rapid screening and convenient detection of highly toxic AFB1.

Solvent-tuned perovskite heterostructures enable visual linoleic acid assay and edible oil species discrimination via wavelength shift

Linoleic acid (LA) detection and edible oils discrimination are essential for food safety. Recently, CsPbBr3@SiO2 heterostructures have been widely applied in edible oil assays, while deep insights into solvent effects on their structure and performance are often overlooked. Based on the suitable polarity and viscosity of cyclohexane, we prepared CsPbBr3@SiO2 Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) with high stability in edible oil and fast halogen-exchange (FHE) efficiency with oleylammonium iodide (OLAI). LA is selectively oxidized by lipoxidase to yield hydroxylated derivative (oxLA) capable of reacting with OLAI, thereby bridging LA content to naked-eye fluorescence color changes through the anti-FHE reaction. The established method for LA in edible oils exhibited consistent results with GC-MS analysis (p > 0.05). Since the LA content difference between edible oils, we further utilized chemometrics to accurately distinguish (100%) the species of edible oils. Overall, such elaborated CsPbBr3@SiO2 JNPs enable a refreshing strategy for edible oil discrimination.

Perovskite hydroxide-based laccase mimics with controllable activity for environmental remediation and biosensing

Constructing relatively inexpensive nanomaterials to simulate the catalytic performance of laccase is of great significance in recent years. Although research on improving laccase-like activity by regulating ligands of copper (amino acids or small organic molecules, etc.) have achieved remarkable success. There are few reports on improving laccase-like activity by adjusting the composition of metal Cu. Here, we used perovskite hydroxide AB(OH)6 as a model to evaluate the relationship between Cu based alloys and their laccase-like activity. We found that when the Cu/Mn alloy ratio of the perovskite hydroxide A point is greater than 1, the laccase-like activity of the binary alloy perovskite hydroxide is higher than that of the corresponding single Cu. Based on the measurements of XPS and ICP-MS, we deduced that the improvements of laccase-like activity mainly attribute to the ratio of Cu+/Cu2+and the content of Cu. Moreover, two types of substrates (toxic pollutants and catechol neurotransmitters) were used to successfully demonstrated such nanozymes' excellent environmental protecting function and biosensing property. This work will provide a novel approach for the construction and application of laccase-like nanozymes in the future.

Mineral matrix deposition of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblastic cells exposed to silicocarnotite and nagelschmidtite bioceramics: In vitro comparison to hydroxyapatite

This work presents the effect of the silicocarnotite (SC) and nagelschmidtite (Nagel) phases on in vitro osteogenesis. The known hydroxyapatite of biological origin (BHAp) was used as a standard of osteoconductive characteristics. The evaluation was carried out in conventional and osteogenic media for comparative purposes to assess the osteogenic ability of the bioceramics. First, the effect of the material on cell viability at 24 h, 7 and 14 days of incubation was evaluated. In addition, cell morphology and attachment on dense bioceramic surfaces were observed by fluorescence microscopy. Specifically, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was evaluated as an osteogenic marker of the early stages of bone cell differentiation. Mineralized extracellular matrix was observed by calcium phosphate deposits and extracellular vesicle formation. Furthermore, cell phenotype determination was confirmed by scanning electron microscope. The results provided relevant information on the cell attachment, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation processes after 7 and 14 days of incubation. Finally, it was demonstrated that SC and Nagel phases promote cell proliferation and differentiation, while the Nagel phase exhibited a superior osteoconductive behavior and could promote MC3T3-E1 cell differentiation to a higher extent than SC and BHAp, which was reflected in a higher number of deposits in a shorter period for both conventional and osteogenic media.

Desulfurization and upgrade of pyrolytic oil and gas during waste tires pyrolysis: The role of metal oxides

Pyrolysis can effectively convert waste tires into high-value products. However, the sulfur-containing compounds in pyrolysis oil and gas would significantly reduce the environmental and economic feasibility of this technology. Here, the desulfurization and upgrade of waste tire pyrolysis oil and gas were performed by adding different metal oxides (Fe2O3, CuO, and CaO). Results showed that Fe2O3 exhibited the highest removal efficiency of 87.7 % for the sulfur-containing gas at 600 °C with an outstanding removal efficiency of 99.5 % for H2S. CuO and CaO were slightly inferior to Fe2O3, with desulfurization efficiencies of 75.9 % and 45.2 % in the gas when added at 5 %. Fe2O3 also demonstrated a notable efficacy in eliminating benzothiophene, the most abundant sulfur compound in pyrolysis oil, with a removal efficiency of 78.1 %. Molecular dynamics simulations and experiments showed that the desulfurization mechanism of Fe2O3 involved the bonding of Fe-S, the breakage of C-S, dehydrogenation and oxygen migration process, which promoted the conversion of Fe2O3 to FeO, FeS and Fe2(SO4)3. Meanwhile, Fe2O3 enhanced the cyclization and dehydrogenation reaction, facilitating the upgrade of oil and gas (monocyclic aromatics to 57.4 % and H2 to 22.3 %). This study may be helpful for the clean and high-value conversion of waste tires.

Co-processing of end-of-life wind turbine blades in portland cement production

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the feasibility of co-processing wind turbine blade (WTB) material in cement manufacturing to provide an end-of-life means to divert the solid waste of decommissioned WTBs from landfills. Many WTBs consist primarily of glass fiber reinforced thermoset polymers that are difficult to recover or recycle. Portland cement is produced world-wide in large quantities, requiring immense quantities of raw materials (mostly calcium oxide and silicon oxide) and kiln temperatures approaching 1,450 °C. This work contributes analyses of WTB material composition, and predicts the energy provided through the combustible components of the WTBs and raw material contributions provided by incorporating the incombustible components of the WTBs to produce cement. Approximately 40 to 50 % of the WTB material will contribute as fuel to cement production, and approximately 50 to 60 % of the WTB material is expected to be incombustible. One tonne of WTB material can displace approximately 0.4 to 0.5 tonne of coal, while also contributing approximately 0.1 tonne of calcium oxide and 0.3 tonne of silicon oxide as raw material to the cement production process. The glass fiber WTB tested had an average boron content of 4.5 % in the ash. The effects of this high boron content on the cement and its production process should be evaluated. Co-processing WTBs in cement plants will slightly reduce combustion-related CO2 emissions due to avoided calcination. It seems feasible to co-process glass-fiber reinforced WTBs in cement production as WTBs provide suitable raw materials and compatible fuel for this process.

Molten salt mediated single-step synthesis of reusable nanostructured CaTiO3 for the removal and recovery of Sr2+: A potential adsorbent for the contaminated water bodies

The facile synthesis approach for the adsorbent preparation and recyclability during decontamination of radioactive pollutants is a significant concern in water treatment. The objective of this study is to, synthesis via solid-state reaction of the nanostructured CaTiO3 for the removal and recovery of strontium (Sr2+) from the various water sources. The influence of the adsorption-dependent parameters including, initial concentration, adsorbent dose, pH, contact time and co-existing ions interference were investigated. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by different analytical techniques like FT-IR, SEM with EDAX, TEM, TGA-DTG, Powder XRD and BET surface analysis. The kinetic models were also used, and according to the kinetic models, a pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.999) was better fitted to the adsorption of Sr2+ ions onto CaTiO3 rather than pseudo-first-order kinetics, which could properly represent the observed adsorption of Sr2+. For the isotherm study, the results are best fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.98) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 102.04 mg/g. The common ions (Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and K+) and Sr2+ having a concentration of 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4, where 82.8, 79.5, and 68.2 % removal was achieved of Sr2+ in each respective matrix. In addition, the adsorption and corresponding recovery and removal for the different Sr2+spiked matrices in deionized water, tap water, well water, lake water, and seawater were investigated with 97, 65.6, 76.5, 73.9 and 17.8 % removal respectively. Also, the CaTiO3 showed excellent recyclability with minimal loss even after 5 consecutive recyclability cycles and >90% removal of strontium achieved. Hence, prepared nanostructured CaTiO3 could be considered a promising adsorbent for the removal and recovery of Sr2+ions from contaminated water bodies.

Construction of BiOCl/bismuth-based halide perovskite heterojunctions derived from the metal-organic framework CAU-17 for effective photocatalytic degradation

The designed synthesis of an S-scheme heterojunction has possessed a great potential for improving photocatalytic wastewater treatment by demonstrating increased the photoredox capacity and improved the charge separation efficiency. Here, we introduce the fabrication of a heterojunction-based photocatalyst comprising bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) and bismuth-based halide perovskite (BHP) nanosheets, derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Our composite photocatalyst is synthesized through a one-pot solvothermal strategy, where a halogenation process is applied to a bismuth-based metal-organic framework (CAU-17) as the precursor for bismuth sourcing. As a result, the rod-like structure of CAU-17 transforms into well-defined plate and nanosheet architectures after 4 and 8 h of solvothermal treatment, respectively. The modulation of the solvothermal reaction time facilitates the establishment of an S-scheme heterojunction, resulting in an increase in the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of rhodamine B (RhB) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The optimized BiOCl/BHP composite exhibits superior RhB and SMX degradation rates, achieving 99.8% degradation of RhB in 60 min and 75.1% degradation of SMX in 300 min. Also, the optimized BiOCl/BHP composite (CAU-17-st-8h sample) exhibited the highest rate constant (k = 3.48 × 10-3 min-1), nearly 6 times higher than that of the bare BHP in the photocatalytic degradation process of SMX. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency can be endorsed to various factors: (i) the in-situ formation of two-components BiOCl/BHP photocatalyst, derived from CAU-17, effectively suppresses the aggregation of pristine BHP and BiOCl particles; (ii) the S-scheme heterostructure establishes a closely-knit interfacial connection, thereby facilitating efficient pathways for charge separation/transfer; and (iii) the BiOCl/BHP heterostructure enhances its capacity to absorb visible light. Our investigation establishes an effective strategy for constructing heterostructured photocatalysts, offering significant potential for application in photocatalytic wastewater treatment.

A Ce2MgMoO6 double perovskite decorated on a functionalized carbon nanofiber nanocomposite for quantification of ciprofloxacin in milk and honey samples: Density functional theory interpretation

In this study, a novel Ce2MgMoO6/CNFs (cerium magnesium molybdite double perovskite decorated on carbon nanofibers) nanocomposite was developed for selective and ultra-sensitive detection of ciprofloxacin (CFX). Physical characterization and analytical techniques were used to explore the morphology, structure, and electrocatalytic characteristics of the Ce2MgMoO6/CNFs nanocomposite. The sensor has a wide linear range (0.005-7.71 μM and 9.75-77.71 μM), a low limit of detection (0.012 μM), high sensitivity (0.807 μA μM-1 cm-2 nM), remarkable repeatability, and an appreciable storage stability. Here, we used density functional theory to investigate CFX and oxidized CFX as well as the locations of the energy levels and electron transfer sites. Furthermore, the Ce2MgMoO6/CNFs-modified electrode was successfully tested in food samples (milk and honey), indicating an acceptable response with a recovery percentage and relative standard deviation of less than 4%, which is comparable to that of GC-MS. Finally, the developed sensor exhibited high selectivity and stability for CFX detection.

Shear bond strength of calcium silicate-based cements to composite resin using a universal adhesive in different application modes: an in vitro study

BACKGROUND

To assess the shear bond strength (SBS) of four calcium silicate-based cements (CSCs) to composite resin using a universal adhesive in self-etch (SE) and etch-and-rinse (ER) modes and to evaluate surface microstructure and chemical composition of CSCs after acid-etching.

METHODS

In total, 30 specimens of each cement, Biodentine (BD), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) Angelus (MTA-A), ProRoot MTA (MTA-P) and MTA Repair HP (MTA-HP), were prepared and assigned into 2 groups (n = 15) according to universal adhesive (Clearfil Universal Bond Quick) applied in SE and ER mode. After composite resin (Clearfil Majesty Esthetic) was applied, the SBS was measured. Scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis was used to evaluate the changes in surface structure and elemental composition.

RESULTS

MTA-P demonstrated significantly higher SBS than all CSCs, except for MTA-HP in the SE mode. The ER mode exhibited significantly higher SBS compared to the SE mode for MTA-P and MTA-A. Acid-etching caused morphological differences and affected elemental distribution.

CONCLUSIONS

MTA-P may be a more suitable pulp capping material due to its superior SBS compared to BD and MTA-A. The application of a universal adhesive in ER mode may be suggested to increase the SBS of MTA-P and MTA-A to composite resin.

Formation behavior of PCDD/Fs during waste pyrolysis and incineration: Effect of temperature, calcium oxide addition, and redox atmosphere

The clean and efficient utilization of municipal solid waste (MSW) has attracted increasing concerns in recent years. Pyrolysis of MSW is one of the promising options due to the production of high-value intermediates and the inhibition of pollutants at reducing atmosphere. Herein, the formation behavior of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) during MSW pyrolysis and incineration was experimentally investigated and compared. The influence of reaction temperature, CaO addition, and redox atmosphere on PCDD/Fs formation were compared and discussed. The results showed as the pyrolysis temperature increased, the mass concentration and international toxicity equivalence quantity of PCDD/Fs initially peaked at ∼750 °C before declining. Most of the generated PCDD/Fs were concentrated in the liquid and gaseous products, accounting for ∼90% of the total. Among liquid products, octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (O8CDD), 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorodibenzofuran (H7CDF) were the most crucial mass concentration contributors, while in gas products, high-chlorinated PCDD/Fs, such as O8CDD, octachlorodibenzofuran (O8CDF) and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-H7CDF were predominant. Compared to incineration, the formation of PCDD/Fs was 7-20 times greater than that from pyrolysis. This discrepancy can be attributed to the hydrogen-rich and oxygen-deficient atmosphere during pyrolysis, which effectively inhibited the Deacon reaction and the formation of C-Cl bonds, thereby reducing the active chlorine in the system. The addition of in-situ CaO additives also decreased the active chlorine content in the system, bolstering the inhibiting of PCDD/Fs formation during MSW pyrolysis.

An environmental evaluation of urine-diverting dry toilets in Hiloweyn Camp, Dollo Ado, Ethiopia

Safe and hygienic management of human waste is essential in humanitarian settings. Urine-diverting dry toilets (UDDTs) can enable this management in some humanitarian emergency settings. A seeded, longitudinal environmental study was conducted in Hiloweyn refugee camp, Dollo Ado, Ethiopia, to measure Escherichia coli and Ascaris suum ova inactivation within closed UDDT vaults and to document environmental conditions (temperature, moisture content, and pH) that could influence inactivation. Hiloweyn camp represented an optimal location for a desiccation-based sanitation technology such as the UDDT. E. coli and Ascaris ova inactivation was observed in UDDTs under warm, dry, alkaline conditions at 6, 9, and 12 months of storage; UDDTs with samples containing <1000 E. coli/g total solids increased from 30 % to 95 % over 12 months, and a >2.8-log10 reduction in Ascaris ova viability was observed after 6 months. Additional laboratory-based studies were conducted to provide insights into the field study findings and study the impact of hydrated lime on E. coli and Ascaris ova inactivation. Results suggest that adding hydrated lime to elevate pH > 12 may increase inactivation and decrease storage time. Overall, UDDTs could contribute to the safe and hygienic management of human waste in comparable warm and dry humanitarian settings.

Investigating the in-vitro bioactivity, biodegradability and drug release behavior of the newly developed PES/HA/WS biocompatible nanocomposites as bone graft substitute

The nucleation of carbonate-containing apatite on the biomaterials surface is regarded as a significant stage in bone healing process. In this regard, composites contained hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, HA), wollastonite (CaSiO3, WS) and polyethersulfone (PES) were synthesized via a simple solvent casting technique. The in-vitro bioactivity of the prepared composite films with different weight ratios of HA and WS was studied by placing the samples in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for 21 days. The results indicated that the the surface of composites containing 2 wt% HA and 4 wt% WS was completely covered by a thick bone-like apatite layer, which was characterized by Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, field emission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The degradation study of the samples showed that the concentration of inorganic particles could not influence the degradability of the polymeric matrix, where all samples expressed similar dexamethasone (DEX) release behavior. Moreover, the in-vitro cytotoxicity results indicated the significant cyto-compatibility of all specimens. Therefore, these findings revealed that the prepared composite films composed of PES, HA, WS and DEX could be regarded as promising bioactive candidates with low degradation rate for bone tissue engineering applications.

Detection of alkaline phosphatase activity with a CsPbBr3/Y6 heterojunction-based photoelectrochemical sensor

An ultra-sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on perovskite composite was developed for the determination of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in human serum. In contrast to CsPbBr3 or Y6 that generated anodic current, the heterojunction of CsPbBr3/Y6 promoted photocarriers to separate and generated cathodic photocurrent. Ascorbic acid (AA) was produced by ALP hydrolyzing L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate trisodium salt (AAP), which can combine with the holes on the photoelectrode surface, accelerating the transmission of photogenerated carriers, leading to enhanced photocurrent intensity. Thus, the enhancement of PEC current was linked to ALP activity. The PEC sensor exhibits good sensitivity for detection of ALP owing to the unique photoelectric properties of the CsPbBr3/Y6 heterojunction. The detection limit of the sensor was 0.012 U·L-1 with a linear dynamic range of 0.02-2000 U·L-1. Therefore, this PEC sensing platform shows great potential for the development of different PEC sensors.

Design and fabrication of La-based perovskites incorporated with functionalized carbon nanofibers for the electrochemical detection of roxarsone in water and food samples

The pentavalent arsenic compound roxarsone (RSN) is used as a feed additive in poultry for rapid growth, eventually ending up in poultry litter. Poultry litter contains chicken manure, which plays a vital role as an affordable fertilizer by providing rich nutrients to agricultural land. Consequently, the extensive use of poultry droppings serves as a conduit for the spread of toxic forms of arsenic in the soil and surface water. RSN can be easily oxidized to release highly carcinogenic As(III) and As(IV) species. Thus, investigations were conducted for the sensitive detection of RSN electrochemically by developing a sensor material based on lanthanum manganese oxide (LMO) and functionalized carbon nanofibers (f-CNFs). The successfully synthesised LMO/f-CNF composite was confirmed by chemical, compositional, and morphological studies. The electrochemical activity of the prepared composite material was examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The obtained results confirmed that LMO/f-CNF showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity and improved current response with a good linear range (0.01-0.78 μM and 2.08-497 μM, respectively), exhibiting a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.004 μM with a high sensitivity of 13.24 μA μM-1 cm-2 towards the detection of RSN. The noteworthy features of LMO/f-CNF composite with its superior electrochemical performance enabled reliable reproducibility, exceptional stability and reliable practical application in the analysis of tap water and food sample, affording a recovery range of 86.1-98.87%.

"Biological responses of two calcium-silicate-based cements on a tissue-engineered 3D organotypic deciduous pulp analogue"

OBJECTIVES

The biological responses of MTA and Biodentine™ has been assessed on a three-dimensional, tissue-engineered organotypic deciduous pulp analogue.

METHODS

Human endothelial (HUVEC) and dental mesenchymal stem cells (SHED) at a ratio of 3:1, were incorporated into a collagen I/fibrin hydrogel; succeeding Biodentine™ and MTA cylindrical specimens were placed in direct contact with the pulp analogue 48 h later. Cell viability/proliferation and morphology were evaluated through live/dead staining, MTT assay and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and expression of angiogenic, odontogenic markers through real time PCR.

RESULTS

Viable cells dominated at day 3 after treatment presenting typical morphology, firmly attached within the hydrogel structures, as shown by live/dead staining and SEM images. MTT assay at day 1 presented a significant increase of cell proliferation in Biodentine™ group. Real-time PCR showed significant upregulation of odontogenic markers DSPP, BMP-2 (day 3,6), RUNX2, ALP (day 3) in contact with Biodentine™ compared to MTA and the control, whereas MTA promoted significant upregulation of DSPP, BMP-2, RUNX2, Osterix (day 3) and ALP (day 6) compared to the control. MSX1 presented downregulation in both experimental groups. Expression of angiogenic markers VEGFa and ANGPT-1 at day 3 was significantly upregulated in contact with Biodentine™ and MTA respectively, while the receptors VEGFR1, VEGFR2 and Tie-2, as well as PECAM-1 were downregulated.

SIGNIFICANCE

Both calcium silicate-based materials are biocompatible and exert positive angiogenic and odontogenic effects, although Biodentine™ during the first days of culture, seems to induce higher cell proliferation and provoke a more profound odontogenic and angiogenic response from SHED.

Monolithic 2D Perovskites Enabled Artificial Photonic Synapses for Neuromorphic Vision Sensors

Neuromorphic visual sensors (NVS) based on photonic synapses hold a significant promise to emulate the human visual system. However, current photonic synapses rely on exquisite engineering of the complex heterogeneous interface to realize learning and memory functions, resulting in high fabrication cost, reduced reliability, high energy consumption and uncompact architecture, severely limiting the up-scaled manufacture, and on-chip integration. Here a photo-memory fundamental based on ion-exciton coupling is innovated to simplify synaptic structure and minimize energy consumption. Due to the intrinsic organic/inorganic interface within the crystal, the photodetector based on monolithic 2D perovskite exhibits a persistent photocurrent lasting about 90 s, enabling versatile synaptic functions. The electrical power consumption per synaptic event is estimated to be≈1.45 × 10-16 J, one order of magnitude lower than that in a natural biological system. Proof-of-concept image preprocessing using the neuromorphic vision sensors enabled by photonic synapse demonstrates 4 times enhancement of classification accuracy. Furthermore, getting rid of the artificial neural network, an expectation-based thresholding model is put forward to mimic the human visual system for facial recognition. This conceptual device unveils a new mechanism to simplify synaptic structure, promising the transformation of the NVS and fostering the emergence of next generation neural networks.

In Situ Mitochondrial Biomineralization for Drug-Free Cancer Therapy

The common clinical chemotherapy often brings serious side effects to patients, mainly due to the off-target and leakage of toxic drugs. However, this is fatal for some specific clinical tumors, such as brain tumors and neuroma. This study performs a drug-free approach by encapsulating black phosphorus (BP) and calcium peroxide (CaO2) in liposomes with surface-modified triphenylphosphonium (BCLT) to develop mitochondria targeting calcification for cancer therapy without damaging normal cells. BCLT preferentially accumulates inside tumor mitochondria and then is activated by near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation to produce abundant PO4 3- and Ca2+ to accelerate in situ mitochondrial mineralization, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and cancer cell death. More importantly, both PO4 3- and Ca2+ are essential components of metabolism in the body, and random gradient diffusion or premature leakage does not cause damage to adjacent normal cells. This achievement promises to be an alternative to conventional chemotherapy in clinical practice for many specific tumor types.

Antimony-Based Halide Perovskite Nanoparticles as Lead-Free Photocatalysts for Controlled Radical Polymerization

Metal halide perovskites have emerged as versatile photocatalysts to convert solar energy for chemical processes. Perovskite photocatalyzed polymerization draws special attention due to its straightforward synthesis process and the ability to create advanced perovskite-polymer nanocomposites. Herein, this work employs Cs3Sb2Br9 perovskite nanoparticles (NPs) as a lead-free photocatalyst for light-controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Cs3Sb2Br9 NPs exhibit high reduction potential and interact with electronegative bromide initiator with Lewis acid Sb sites, enabling efficient photoinduced reduction of initiators and controlled polymerization under blue light irradiation. Methacrylate monomers with various functional groups are successfully polymerized, and the resulting polymer showcased a dispersity (Đ) as small as 1.27. The living nature of polymerization is confirmed by high chain end fidelity and kinetic studies. Moreover, Cs3Sb2Br9 NPs serve as heterogeneous photocatalysts, demonstrating recyclability and reusability for up to four cycles. This work presents a promising approach to overcome the limitations of lead-based perovskites in photoinduced controlled radical polymerization, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative for the synthesis of well-defined polymeric materials.

Novel self-setting cements based on tricalcium silicate/(β-tricalcium phosphate/monocalcium phosphate anhydrous)/hydroxypropyl methylcellulose: From hydration mechanism to biological evaluations

Despite the clinical success of tricalcium silicate (TCS)-based materials in endodontics, the inferior handling characteristic, poor anti-washout property and slow setting kinetics hindered their wider applications. To solve these problems, an injectable fast-setting TCS/β-tricalcium phosphate/monocalcium phosphate anhydrous (β-TCP/MCPA) cement was developed for the first time by incorporation of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and β-TCP/MCPA. The physical-chemical characterization (setting time, anti-washout property, injectability, compressive strength, apatite mineralization and sealing property) of TCS/(β-TCP/MCPA) were conducted. Its hydration mechanism was also investigated. Furthermore, the cytocompatibility and osteogenic/odontogenic differentiation of stem cells isolated from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) treated with TCS/β-TCP/MCPA were studied. The results showed that HPMC could provide TCS with good anti-washout ability and injectability but slow hydration process. However, β-TCP/MCPA effectively enhanced anti-washout characteristics and reduced setting time due to faster hydration kinetics. TCS/(β-TCP/MCPA) obtained around 90 % of injection rate and high compressive strength whereas excessive additions of β-TCP/MCPA compromised its injectability and compressive strength. TCS/(β-TCP/MCPA) can induce apatite deposition and form a tight marginal sealing at the dentin-cement interface. Additionally, TCS/(β-TCP/MCPA) showed good biocompatibility and promoted osteo/odontogenic differentiation of SHED. In general, our results indicated that TCS/(β-TCP/MCPA) may be particularly promising as an injectable bioactive cements for endodontic treatment.

Oxygen Self-Supplied Nanoplatform for Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy against Enterococcus Faecalis within Root Canals

The successful treatment of persistent and recurrent endodontic infections hinges upon the eradication of residual microorganisms within the root canal system, which urgently needs novel drugs to deliver potent yet gentle antimicrobial effects. Antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a promising tool for root canal infection management. Nevertheless, the hypoxic microenvironment within the root canal system significantly limits the efficacy of this treatment. Herein, a nanohybrid drug, Ce6/CaO2/ZIF-8@polyethylenimine (PEI), is developed using a bottom-up strategy to self-supply oxygen for enhanced aPDT. PEI provides a positively charged surface, which enables precise targeting of bacteria. CaO2 reacts with H2O to generate O2, which alleviates the hypoxia in the root canal and serves as a substrate for Ce6 under 660 nm laser irradiation, leading to the successful eradication of planktonic Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) and biofilm in vitro and, moreover, the effective elimination of mature E. faecalis biofilm in situ within the root canal system. This smart design offers a viable alternative for mitigating hypoxia within the root canal system to overcome the restricted efficacy of photosensitizers, providing an exciting prospect for the clinical management of persistent endodontic infection.

Lime and odour: A preliminary investigation into the effect of hydrated lime on the volatiles emitted from human remains

The location of human remains is performed primarily through the aid of cadaver detection dogs, which rely on the malodour produced through decomposition of decaying bodies. Malefactors will attempt to conceal these putrefactive odours through chemical additions such as lime, which is also wrongly believed to accelerate decomposition and prevent the identification of the victim. Despite the frequency of lime in forensic applications, to date no research has been performed to determine its effect on the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released during human decomposition. This research was therefore conducted to ascertain the effects of hydrated lime on the VOC profile of human remains. Two human donors were used in a field trial at the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research (AFTER): one donor was covered with hydrated lime, and the other had no chemical additions acting as a control. VOC samples were collected over a period of 100 days and analysed using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS). The volatile samples were accompanied by visual observations of how decomposition progressed. The results showed that lime application decreased the rate of decomposition and decreased total carrion insect activity. Lime increased the abundance of VOCs during the fresh and bloat stages of decay, however the abundance of compounds plateaued during active and advanced decomposition and were much lower than those detected from the control donor. Despite this suppression of VOCs, the study found that dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl trisulfide, key sulfur-containing compounds, were still produced in high quantities, and can thus still be used to locate chemically altered human remains. Knowledge of the effects of lime on human decomposition can inform the training of cadaver detection dogs, and ensure a greater chance at locating victims of crimes or mass disasters.

Near-infrared mechanoluminescence sensor: A new method for on-site infrastructure detection

Near-infrared mechanoluminescence is a phenomenon that produces high penetrating near-infrared light under external stimulation. Near-infrared light coincides with the biological window, lower optical loss, and the fact that the mechanoluminescence material is a medium that converts mechanical energy into light energy. The near-infrared mechanoluminescence material has potential application prospects in the fields of biological imaging, medical diagnosis, and monitoring of building materials. In this article, we report on a perovskite-type Sr3Sn2O7:Nd3+ near-infrared mechanoluminescence material, and its peaks locate in the first near-infrared window (800-1000 nm) and the second near-infrared window (1080, 1350 nm), respectively. Under the condition of pre-sintering with Li2CO3 as flux, the best sintering conditions are obtained, and the luminescence of material is in perfect agreement with the applied mechanical stress. In addition, a near-infrared mechanoluminescence sensor is proposed to solve the problem of building damage and timely maintenance.

Green preparation of CaO-based CO2 adsorbent by calcium-induced hydrogenation of shell wastes at room/moderate temperature

Capturing CO2 using clamshell/eggshell-derived CaO adsorbent can not only reduce carbon emissions but also alleviate the impact of trash on the environment. However, organic acid was usually used, high-temperature calcination was often performed, and CO2 was inevitably released during preparing CaO adsorbents from shell wastes. In this work, CaO-based CO2 adsorbent was greenly prepared by calcium-induced hydrogenation of clamshell and eggshell wastes in one pot at room/moderate temperature. CO2 adsorption experiments were performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The adsorption performance of the adsorbents obtained from the mechanochemical reaction (BM-C/E-CaO) was superior to that of the adsorbents obtained from the thermochemical reaction (Cal-C/E-CaO). The CO2 adsorption capacity of BM-C-CaO at 650 °C is up to 36.82 wt%, but the adsorption decay rate of the sample after 20 carbonation/calcination cycles is only 30.17%. This study offers an alternative energy-saving method for greenly preparing CaO-based adsorbent from shell wastes.

An optimized chitosan/alginate-based microencapsulation of lime peel essential oil and its application as an antibacterial textile

A functional textile immobilized by microcapsules of the lime peel essential oils of C. aurantifolia (LPEO) was prepared and characterized. A varied amount of Chitosan/Alginate (CH/AG) ratios, followed by a mass of LPEO and concentration of sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) crosslinker, was optimized sequentially to coacervate LPEO using a Tween 80 emulsifier. An antibacterial assay against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was further evaluated for the embedded microcapsules. The LPEO (0.2 g) was effectively coacervated by CH/AG (5:3) crosslinked by 2% of STTP to give a yield, oil content (OC), and encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 53.45 ± 2.16%, 65.08 ± 2.60% and 85.04 ± 0.70% respectively. A rough spherical shape of LPEO microcapsules was homogeneously observed with an average particle size of 0.757 mm. An Avrami's kinetic model revealed the release mechanism of the core following zero-order kinetics (k = 1.11 ± 0.13 × 10-9 s-1, Ea = 70.21 kJ/mol). The LPEO microcapsules demonstrated good thermal stability up to 122 °C and maintained 38% OC at ambient temperature for four weeks. A 70.34 ± 4.16% of the LPEO microcapsules were successfully overlaid onto the gauze with citric acid binder and sodium phosphate catalyst. Overall, the immobilized microcapsules exhibited strong inhibition against S. aureus and moderate against S. epidermidis, E. coli, and K. pneumonia.

Demystification of luminescence properties and the near imperceptible thermal quenching of Sm3+-doped tungstate phosphors

Ultra-high thermally stable Ca2MgWO6:xSm3+ (x = 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, and 1.5 mol%) double perovskite phosphors were synthesized through solid-state reaction method. Product formation was confirmed by comparing the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the phosphors with the standard reference file. The structural, morphological, thermal, and optical properties of the prepared phosphor were examined in detail using XRD, Fourier transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microscopy, diffused reflectance spectra, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), photoluminescence emission, and temperature-dependent PLE (TDPL). It was seen that the phosphor exhibited emission in the reddish region for the near-ultraviolet excitation with moderate Colour Rendering Index values and high colour purity. The optimized phosphor (x = 1.25 mol%) was found to possess a direct optical band gap of 3.31 eV. TGA studies showed the astonishing thermal stability of the optimized phosphor. Additionally, near-zero thermal quenching was seen in TDPL due to elevated phonon-assisted radiative transition. Furthermore, the anti-Stokes and Stokes emission peaks were found to be sensitive toward the temperature change and followed a Boltzmann-type distribution. All these marked properties will make the prepared phosphors a suitable candidate for multifield applications and a fascinating material for further development.

Long-range order enabled stability in quantum dot light-emitting diodes

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have produced external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of more than 25% with narrowband emission1,2, but these LEDs have limited operating lifetimes. We posit that poor long-range ordering in perovskite QD films-variations in dot size, surface ligand density and dot-to-dot stacking-inhibits carrier injection, resulting in inferior operating stability because of the large bias required to produce emission in these LEDs. Here we report a chemical treatment to improve the long-range order of perovskite QD films: the diffraction intensity from the repeating QD units increases three-fold compared with that of controls. We achieve this using a synergistic dual-ligand approach: an iodide-rich agent (aniline hydroiodide) for anion exchange and a chemically reactive agent (bromotrimethylsilane) that produces a strong acid that in situ dissolves smaller QDs to regulate size and more effectively removes less conductive ligands to enable compact, uniform and defect-free films. These films exhibit high conductivity (4 × 10-4 S m-1), which is 2.5-fold higher than that of the control, and represents the highest conductivity recorded so far among perovskite QDs. The high conductivity ensures efficient charge transportation, enabling red perovskite QD-LEDs that generate a luminance of 1,000 cd m-2 at a record-low voltage of 2.8 V. The EQE at this luminance is more than 20%. Furthermore, the stability of the operating device is 100 times better than previous red perovskite LEDs at EQEs of more than 20%.

Synthesis and characterization of novel guar gum based waste material derived nanocomposite for effective removal of hexabromocyclododecane and lindane

Herein, efficient degradation of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and Lindane, a persistent organic pollutant using guar gum based calcium oxide doped silicon dioxide (GG-CaO@SiO2) has been reported. The nanocomposite was prepared by waste egg shell (CaO) and rice husk (SiO2) was well characterized. The maximum degradation of HBCD and Lindane were observed at 8 mg catalyst loading, neutral pH, and 2 mg L-1 of pollutant amount. The photocatalytic performance of GG-CaO@SiO2 for HBCD and Lindane photodegradation was evaluated, and it was found that the rate constant increased in the order of GG-CaO@SiO2 > CaO@SiO2 > GG. The polymeric GG-CaO@SiO2 nanocomposite showed maximum removal of both pollutants due to higher surface area (70 m2 g-1) and synergistic interactions among GG moieties. It achieved HBCD and Lindane elimination rates of 94 % and 90 % by photo-adsorptive degradation within 150 min. Meanwhile, the leaching of HBCD from expanded polystyrene (EPS) materials (0.14 ± 0.05 ppm) underwater with different time intervals and degradation of leachate HBCD were also assessed. The eradication of the pollutant manifested first-order kinetics, with the Langmuir adsorption. LC-MS analysis confirmed that GG-CaO@SiO2 effectively breaks down complex structure toxic pollutants into safer metabolites under natural sunlight exposure. The polymeric GG-CaO@SiO2 nanocomposite showed notable reusability up to ten cycle promotes sustainability.

Assessment of sealing efficacy, radiopacity, and surface topography of a bioinspired polymer for perforation repair

Background

Root perforation repair presents a significant challenge in dentistry due to inherent limitations of existing materials. This study explored the potential of a novel polydopamine-based composite as a root repair material by evaluating its sealing efficacy, radiopacity, and surface topography.

Methods

Confocal microscopy assessed sealing ability, comparing the polydopamine-based composite to the gold standard, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Radiopacity was evaluated using the aluminium step wedge technique conforming to ISO standards. Surface roughness analysis utilized atomic force microscopy (AFM), while field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) visualized morphology.

Results

The polydopamine-based composite exhibited significantly superior sealing efficacy compared to MTA (P < 0.001). Radiopacity reached 3 mm aluminium equivalent, exceeding minimum clinical requirements. AFM analysis revealed a smooth surface topography, and FESEM confirmed successful composite synthesis.

Conclusion

This study demonstrates promising properties of the polydopamine-based composite for root perforation repair, including superior sealing efficacy, clinically relevant radiopacity, and smooth surface topography. Further investigation is warranted to assess its clinical viability and potential translation to endodontic practice.

Effect of pH on the solubility and volumetric change of ready-to-use Bio-C Repair bioceramic material

Acidic pH can modify the properties of repair cements. In this study, volumetric change and solubility of the ready-to-use bioceramic repair cement Bio-C Repair (BCR, Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil) were evaluated after immersion in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) (pH 7.0) or butyric acid (pH 4.5). Solubility was determined by the difference in initial and final mass using polyethylene tubes measuring 4 mm high and 6.70 mm in internal diameter that were filled with BCR and immersed in 7.5 mL of PBS or butyric acid for 7 days. The volumetric change was established by using bovine dentin tubes measuring 4 mm long with an internal diameter of 1.5 mm. The dentin tubes were filled with BCR at 37°C for 24 hours. Scanning was performed with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT; SkyScan 1176, Bruker, Kontich, Belgium) with a voxel size of 8.74 µm. Then, the specimens were immersed in 1.5 mL of PBS or butyric acid at and 37 °C for 7 days. After this period, a new micro-CT scan was performed. Bio-C Repair showed greater mass loss after immersion in butyric acid when compared with immersion in PBS (p<0.05). Bio-C Repair showed volumetric loss after immersion in butyric acid and increase in volume after immersion in PBS (p<0.05). The acidic pH influenced the solubility and dimensional stability of the Bio-C Repair bioceramic cement, promoting a higher percentage of solubility and decrease in volumetric values.

Modeling the influence of lime on the unconfined compressive strength of reconstituted graded soil using advanced machine learning approaches for subgrade and liner applications

In the field of soil mechanics, especially in transportation and environmental geotechnics, the use of machine learning (ML) techniques has emerged as a powerful tool for predicting and understanding the compressive strength behavior of soils especially graded ones. This is to overcome the sophisticated equipment, laboratory space and cost needs utilized in multiple experiments on the treatment of soils for environmental geotechnics systems. This present study explores the application of machine learning (ML) techniques, namely Genetic Programming (GP), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR), and the Response Surface Methodology in predicting the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of soil-lime mixtures. This was for purposes of subgrade and landfill liner design and construction. By utilizing input variables such as Gravel, Sand, Silt, Clay, and Lime contents (G, S, M, C, L), the models forecasted the strength values after 7 and 28 days of curing. The accuracy of the developed models was compared, revealing that both ANN and EPR achieved a similar level of accuracy for UCS after 7 days, while the GP model performed slightly lower. The complexity of the formula required for predicting UCS after 28 days resulted in decreased accuracy. The ANN and EPR models achieved accuracies of 85% and 82%, with R2 of 0.947 and 0.923, and average error of 0.15 and 0.18, respectively, while the GP model exhibited a lower accuracy of 66.0%. Conversely, the RSM produced models for the UCS with predicted R2 of more than 98% and 99%, for the 7- and 28- day curing regimes, respectively. The RSM also produced adequate precision in modelling UCS of more than 14% against the standard 7%. All input factors were found to have almost equal importance, except for the lime content (L), which had an average influence. This shows the importance of soil gradation in the design and construction of subgrade and landfill liners. This research further demonstrates the potential of ML techniques for predicting the strength of lime reconstituted G-S-M-C graded soils and provides valuable insights for engineering applications in exact and sustainable subgrade and liner designs, construction and performance monitoring and rehabilitation of the constructed civil engineering infrastructure.

Effect of radiopacifier and liquid in the physicochemical and biological properties of calcium silicate clinker Angelus: A laboratory investigation

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of radiopacifier calcium tungstate and manipulation with distilled water (DW) or liquid with additives (LA) on calcium silicate clinker Angelus (CL) properties, compared with MTA (Angelus, Brazil) and MTA Repair HP (MTAHP, Angelus, Brazil). The physicochemical properties, cellular viability and bioactivity were evaluated. ANOVA/Tukey and Bonferroni tests were performed (α = 0.05). There was no difference in material setting time (p > 0.05). MTA and MTAHP were similar (p > 0.05) and had greater radiopacity than CL + DW and CL + LA (p < 0.05). All experimental materials showed mass increase, alkalinisation capacity, besides biocompatibility and bioactivity at 3 and 7 days. The different liquids had no influence in the biological properties and bioactivity of the calcium silicate clinker Angelus. Calcium tungstate provided radiopacity, without changing the setting time, maintaining the mass increase and alkalinisation ability of the calcium silicate materials.

Synthesis and performance evaluation of S-scheme heterostructured LaFeO3/TiO2 photocatalyst for the efficient degradation of thiamethoxam

The application of perovskite lanthanum ferrite (LaFeO3) as a photocatalyst has shown significant potential in the removal of persistent organic and inorganic contaminants. In the present research, LaFeO3 and various composites consisting of LaFeO3 and TiO2 were prepared. The photocatalytic efficiency of the produced catalysts was assessed by measuring their effectiveness in degrading thiamethoxam, a pesticide belonging to the second generation of neonicotinoids. Experimental investigations were carried out to examine the impact of various factors on the degradation process, including variables like concentration of thiamethoxam, catalyst amount, and pH level. The produced catalysts were characterized by various techniques, including field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), photoluminescence (PL), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The highest degradation rates were observed when using the synthesized catalyst, 1% LaFeO3/TiO2 (LFTO1), under both UV-C and direct sunlight conditions. This performance outperformed TiO2 and bare LaFeO3. When exposed to ultraviolet (UV-C) radiation at an intensity of 15 W m-2 and under neutral pH conditions, LFTO1 achieved approximately 97% degradation, while under direct sunlight, the LFTO1 photocatalyst exhibited a degradation rate of 79% within a 120-min reaction period. The enhanced activity of LFTO1 could be attributed to its increased surface area, reduced bandgap, and lower electron-hole recombination. The investigation of reaction kinetics showed that the degradation of thiamethoxam followed a pseudo-first-order rate law. Furthermore, LFTO1 can be employed up to 5 times without experiencing any loss in its catalytic activity, thus confirming its long-term utility.

Effects of vehicles on the physical properties and biocompatibility of premixed calcium silicate cements

Premixed calcium silicate cements (pCSCs) contain vehicles which endow fluidity and viscosity to CSCs. This study aimed to investigate the effects of three vehicles, namely, polyethylene glycol (PEG), propylene glycol (PG), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), on the physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of pCSCs. The setting time, solubility, expansion rate, and mechanical strength of the pCSCs were evaluated, and the formation of calcium phosphate precipitates was assessed in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The effects of pCSC extracts on the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were investigated. Finally, the tissue compatibility of pCSCs in rat femurs was observed. CSC containing PEG (CSC-PEG) exhibited higher solubility and setting time, and CSC-DMSO showed the highest expansion rate and mechanical strength. All pCSCs generated calcium phosphate precipitates. The extract of CSC-PG induced the highest expressions of osteogenic markers along with the greatest calcium deposites. When implanted in rat femurs, CSC-PEG was absorbed considerably, whereas CSC-PG remained relatively unaltered inside the femur.

Characterisation and evaluation of physical properties of AH-Plus sealer with and without the incorporation of petasin, pachymic acid, curcumin and shilajit-an invitro study

BACKGROUND

AH Plus, an epoxy resin-based sealer, is widely used in endodontic practice, owing to its good physical properties that confers longstanding dimensional stability and good adhesion to dentin. Nevertheless, its propensity to trigger inflammation, especially in its freshly mixed state, has been extensively documented. Phytochemicals such as Petasin, Pachymic acid, Curcumin, and Shilajit are known for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. This study aimed to analyze and determine the effect of these natural products on the physical properties of AH Plus sealer when incorporated with the sealer.

METHODS

AH Plus (AHR) sealer was mixed with 10% petasin, 0.75% pachymic, 0.5% and 6%shilajit to obtain AHP, AHA, AHC and AHS in the ratio of 10:1 and 5:1 respectively. Five samples of each material were assessed for setting time, solubility, flow, and dimensional stability in accordance with the ISO 6876:2012 standardization. Sealers were characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Statistical evaluation involved the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilks tests for normality and the one-way ANOVA test for analysis.

RESULTS

In this investigation, the characterisation analysis revealed a relatively similar microstructure in all the experimental root canal sealers. All experimental groups, excluding the control group, exhibited an increase in flow ranging from 11.9 to 31.4% at a 10:1 ratio. Similarly, for the 5:1 ratio, the increase ranged from 12.02 to 31.83%. In terms of dimensional stability, all groups at the 10:1 ratio showed a decrease compared to the control group. The addition of natural agents to AHR in 10:1 ratio led to a reduction in setting time by 8.9-31.6%, and at a 5:1 ratio, the reduction ranged from 8.1 to 31.5%. However, regarding solubility, the addition of natural agents did not induce any significant alterations.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that all tested root canal sealers exhibited properties that met the acceptable criteria outlined in the ISO 6876:2012 standardization.

Physicochemical properties of calcium silicate cement based endodontic sealers

AIM

To mensure the physicochemical properties of three ceramic cement endodontic sealers AH Plus Bioceramic, Bio-C Sealer and Bio-C Sealer Ion+ with an epoxy resin sealer, AH Plus.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

These properties were measured: hardening time (HT), dimensional change (DC), solubility (SL), flow (FL) and radiopacity (RD). The distilled water obtained from the SL test was analyzed with atomic absorption spectrometry. A sample calculation was made considering n = 5 repetitions for each experimental sealer evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

For the HT, AH Plus (484 ± 2.76 min) and AH Plus Bioceramic (424 ± 1.23 min) set more slowly than of Bio-C Sealer (370 ± 4.50 min) and Bio-C Sealer Ion+ (380 ± 1.42 min) (p < 0.05). AH Plus Bioceramic (12.56 ± 2.71 %) was more soluble than Bio-C Sealer (6.69 ± 1.67 %), Bio-C Sealer Ion+ (5.67 ± 2.16 %) and AH Plus (0.15 ± 0.01 %) (p < 0.05). AH Plus (0.03 ± 0.01 %) had slight expansion while the cement-based sealers had shrinkage: AH Plus Bioceramic (-1.60 ± 0.63 %) and Bio-C Sealer (-1.38 ± 0.69 %), Bio-C Sealer Ion+ (-5.19 ± 1.23 %) (p < 0.05). Bio-C Sealer Ion+ (59.80 ± 0.86 mm) and Bio-C Sealer (58.60 ± 0.98 mm) had the highest flow compared with AH Plus (56.90 ± 0.56 mm) and AH Plus Bioceramic (49.50 ± 0.63 mm) (p < 0.05). AH Plus (9.17 ± 0.06 mmAl) and AH Plus Bioceramic (8.27 ± 0.84 mmAl) showed radiopacity values when compared with those of Bio-C Sealer (4.90 ± 0.08 mmAl) and Bio-C Sealer Ion+ (4.14 ± 0.05 mmAl) (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Ion release is inhered to these cement-based sealers and this result in calcium ion release.

Investigating best practice for specimen preparation for biological testing of root canal sealers

INTRODUCTION

Biological characterization of root canal sealers is important as it assesses the ability of the root canal sealer to exert antimicrobial properties thus avoiding treatment failures caused by microbial challenge and also assess the cytotoxic effect on the periapical tissues. Assessment of the biological testing of root canal sealers necessitates the sterilisation of the materials prior to evaluation. This study aims to analyse the influence of various sterilisation techniques conducted prior to biological testing on the microstructure and surface properties of endodontic sealers. Assessment of the initial microbial contamination on the material was also undertaken.

METHODS

Four commercial sealers were investigated. The sealers were either prepared in a laminar flow cabinet or on a laboratory bench top under ambient conditions. Each group was further divided into 5 groups (n = 3) based on the sterilization technique:1) ethanol-10 mins, 2) ultraviolet-1 h, 3) ethanol-10 mins + ultraviolet-1 h, 4) autoclave, and 5) no sterilisation (control). Microbial levels in the materials were assessed by plate streaking technique. The materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, before and after sterilisation, to assess any changes in microstructure and chemical composition.

RESULTS

All the materials did not exhibit contamination when prepared in laminar flow chamber in sterile conditions compared with sealers prepared on the bench top. Three of the commercial materials showed changes in microstructure while one (TotalFill) was not affected by the sterilisation. AH Plus and BioRoot RCS exhibited alterations in water and alcohol peaks in FT-IR while the single syringe sealers (TotalFill and BioRoot Flow) showed no changes.

CONCLUSIONS

Sterilisation methods cause physical and chemical alterations to sealers. Material preparation should be performed in a laminar flow cabinet and a test for sterility should be performed prior to any biological testing being undertaken. If the materials are not sterile, assessment of the effects of the sterilization methods is recommended.

Characterization and Assessment of Physical Properties of 3 Single Syringe Hydraulic Cement-based Sealers

INTRODUCTION

A number of sealers with different chemistries are badged as Bioceramic, implying biological activity, but have dissimilar properties, which has implications on the sealer properties and will affect the quality and outcome of root canal treatment. This study aimed to assess the physical and chemical properties of 3 hydraulic cement-based sealers, namely BC Universal sealer compared with Totalfill BC sealer and AH Plus Bioceramic.

METHODS

The microstructure and composition of the sealers were assessed using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy after setting. The crystalline phases were assessed by X-ray diffraction analysis and the leachates were tested using inductively coupled plasma. All testing was performed at 0, 7, and 28 days. The physical properties of film thickness, flow, radiopacity, and solubility were evaluated using ISO 6876:2012 standards.

RESULTS

All 3 sealers contained calcium, zirconium, and silicon. Totalfill BC had the highest calcium release at 7 and 28 days followed by AH Plus Bioceramic and BC Universal sealer. All 3 sealers adhered to the ISO standard in terms of flow and radiopacity. BC Universal sealer was slightly over the range (>50 μm) for film thickness. All sealers exceeded the solubility range set by ISO 6876:2012.

CONCLUSION

Although these hydraulic cement sealers had similar components and delivery, the properties varied significantly. The testing of material properties to confirm the suitability for clinical use is necessary.

Examination of surface porosity of current pulp capping materials by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) method

When dental pulp is exposed, it must be covered with a biocompatible material to form reparative dentine. The material used, besides being biocompatible, should have an ideal surface structure for the attachment, proliferation and differentiation of dental pulp stem cells. This study aimed to evaluate the porosity of the microstructures of four pulp capping materials using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Biodentine, Bioaggregate, TheraCal and Dycal materials were prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions using 2 × 9 mm Teflon molds. A total of 60 samples, 15 in each group, were scanned using micro-CT. Open and closed pores and the total porosity of the microstructures of the materials were assessed. The findings obtained from the study were analyzed via the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Mann-Whitney U test. The porosity of Bioaggregate was significantly higher than that of Biodentine, Dycal and TheraCal in all porosity values. While Biodentine did not show a statistically significant difference in open and total porosity values from either TheraCal or Dycal, closed porosity values of Dycal were significantly higher than those of Biodentine and TheraCal. Because of the affinity of cells to porous surfaces, the pulp capping materials' microstructure may affect the pulp capping treatment's success. From this perspective, the use of Bioaggregate in direct pulp capping may increase the success of treatment.

Comparative Evaluation of Push-out Bond Strength of Conventional Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Biodentine, and Two Novel Antibacterial-enhanced Mineral Trioxide Aggregates

AIM

To evaluate the push-out bond strength of two newly modified mineral trioxide aggregates (MTAs) with conventional MTA and biodentine.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Material preparation: Two commercially available bioactive bioceramics: Group I: Mineral trioxide aggregate; Group II: Biodentine; and two newly formulated modified MTAs: Group III: Doxycycline incorporated MTA formulation; Group IV: Metronidazole incorporated MTA formulation was used in the present study. All the test materials were then carried using a plastic instrument to the desired experimental design. Teeth sample preparation: A total of 120 teeth samples were collected and divided into four groups of test materials with 30 teeth samples per group. Single-rooted permanent teeth, that is, incisors were collected and stored in saline until the study was performed. Sectioning of the teeth into 2.0 ± 0.05-mm thick slices was performed perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth. The canal space was instrumented using Gates Glidden burs to achieve a diameter of 1.5 mm. All four prepared materials were mixed and placed in the lumen of the slices and placed in an incubator at 37°C for 72 hours. Push-out test and bond failure pattern evaluation: The push-out test was performed using a universal testing machine. The slices were examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) at 40× magnification to determine the nature of bond failure. All the collected data were recorded and statistically analyzed.

RESULTS

The mean push-out bond strength was found to be the highest for group II (37.38 ± 1.94 MPa) followed by group III (28.04 ± 2.22 MPa) and group IV (27.83 ± 1.34 MPa). The lowest mean push-out bond strength was noticed with group I (22.89 ± 2.49 MPa). This difference was found to be statistically significant (p = 0.000). Group I samples had the predominantly adhesive type of failure (86.4%), while group II samples showed the cohesive type of failure (94.2%). Both the modified MTAs (groups III and IV) primarily showed mixed types of failures.

CONCLUSION

Both the antibacterial-enhanced MTAs had better pushout bond strength compared to conventional MTA but did not outperform biodentine. Hence, it could serve as a substitute for conventional MTA due to its augmented physical properties.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Carious pulp exposure and nonvital open apices pose a critical challenge to pediatric dental practitioners. In such circumstances, maintaining the vitality of pulp and faster healing would help in a better prognosis. Novel MTAs without any cytotoxic components, and enhanced antibacterial contents with augmented physical properties can help in treating such clinical conditions. Biocompatibility and Bioactivity of a Dual-Cured Resin-Based Calcium Silicate Cement: In Vitro and in vivo Evaluation

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to assess the biocompatibility and bioactivity of a dual-cured resin-based calcium silicate cement in vitro and in vivo.

METHODS

For in vitro analyses, standardized samples were prepared using TheraCal LC, TheraCal PT, and ProRoot MTA. The amount of residual monomer released from TheraCal LC and TheraCal PT was assessed using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Calcium ion release from the materials was evaluated using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to determine the calcium weight volume in the materials. For in vivo analysis, a rat direct pulp capping model with TheraCal LC, TheraCal PT, and ProRoot MTA groups (n = 16 per group) was used. The rats were euthanized after 7 or 28 days, and histological and immunohistochemical analyses (CD68 and DSPP) were performed.

RESULTS

Bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate and polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate release from TheraCal PT was lower than that from TheraCal LC (P < .05). Similar results were obtained for calcium-ion release and calcium weight volume, with ProRoot MTA showing the highest values. In the in vivo evaluation, TheraCal PT showed significantly greater hard tissue formation than TheraCal LC (P < .017). TheraCal PT showed lower CD68 expression and greater DSPP expression than TheraCal LC (P < .017). There were no significant differences in the expression of CD68 or DSPP between the TheraCal PT and ProRoot MTA groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Within the limitations of this study, the biocompatibility and bioactivity of TheraCal PT could be comparable to those of ProRoot MTA.

Development of nanobiosilicate, tricalcium phosphate and chlorhexidine materials for biomineralization with crystallographic similarity to hydroxyapatite and biomodified collagen

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this work is to test experimental cements, doped with a silicate based bioactive nanoparticle (NanoBiosilicate). Methods, we synthesized a glass nanoparticle by Sol-Gel Stöber method, used to be incorporated in a dental material for endodontic uses.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We assess the mineralizing properties and biocompatibility. Besides the crystallography characterization of the resultant new crystals. Results, After analysis, and comparison with commercial materials, the material tested was similar in mechanical properties required by ISO, The ion release was effective after 2 hr. of setting and the novel material was cell compatible accepted by ISO.

RESULTS

We found new formed Calcium Phosphate peaks in the spectroscopic analysis (FTIR), remarkably the crystals formed were comparable to hydroxyapatite when analyzed with a Selected Area Electron Diffractometer, with rings of 2.84 Å for 002, and the 2.77 Å is also visible for 210. The 6.83 Å and 6.88 Å, for respective 222 and 004. The incorporation of Chlorhexidine was not detrimental for this property, Significance, the features mentioned represented a progress in biomineralization field that was associated to an improved mineral structure formation with increased crystallographic similarity to natural hydroxyapatite. When chlorhexidine was added a favorable biomodification of the remaining collagen in dentinal walls and antimicrobial activity potential were also observed.

Designer phospholipid capping ligands for soft metal halide nanocrystals

The success of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) in science and optoelectronics is inextricable from their surfaces. The functionalization of lead halide perovskite NCs1-5 poses a formidable challenge because of their structural lability, unlike the well-established covalent ligand capping of conventional semiconductor NCs6,7. We posited that the vast and facile molecular engineering of phospholipids as zwitterionic surfactants can deliver highly customized surface chemistries for metal halide NCs. Molecular dynamics simulations implied that ligand-NC surface affinity is primarily governed by the structure of the zwitterionic head group, particularly by the geometric fitness of the anionic and cationic moieties into the surface lattice sites, as corroborated by the nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy data. Lattice-matched primary-ammonium phospholipids enhance the structural and colloidal integrity of hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites (FAPbBr3 and MAPbBr3 (FA, formamidinium; MA, methylammonium)) and lead-free metal halide NCs. The molecular structure of the organic ligand tail governs the long-term colloidal stability and compatibility with solvents of diverse polarity, from hydrocarbons to acetone and alcohols. These NCs exhibit photoluminescence quantum yield of more than 96% in solution and solids and minimal photoluminescence intermittency at the single particle level with an average ON fraction as high as 94%, as well as bright and high-purity (about 95%) single-photon emission.

Strength and leaching behavior of tailing-based paste backfill at high water content amended with lime activated ground granulated blast furnace slag and flocculant

Flocculent is commonly used in mining activities to improve the concentration of tailing slurry by enhancing the sedimentation process of small tailings particles. The presence of flocculent in thickened tailings is unavoidable, and it affects the heavy metal leaching performances and mechanical and rheological characteristics of tailing-based cemented paste backfill (CPB). This study is carried out to investigate the physicochemical and leachability of CPB amended with flocculants and lime-activated ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS). The stabilized samples were subjected to a series of model tests, including toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) and pH, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the CPB amended with anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) demonstrated better performance in terms of a decrease in heavy metal leachability besides higher mechanical strength than poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and poly ferric chloride (PFC) samples. Furthermore, the UCS results showed that increasing binder content up to 15% negatively influences strength improvement of all stabilized samples because of weak connections between soil particles and cementitious material, resulting in high leachability of heavy metals. The analysis of XRD and SEM showed that anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) cases exhibited more voluminous hydration products, resulting in a compact stabilized matrix and substantially reduced heavy metal leachability.

Physicochemical properties of AH plus bioceramic sealer, Bio-C Sealer, and ADseal root canal sealer

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical properties of two newly introduced premixed calcium silicate-based root canal sealers (AH Plus Bioceramic Sealer and Bio-C Sealer) compared to a resin-based root canal sealer (ADseal root canal sealer).

METHODS

Solubility, pH analysis, calcium ion release, and film thickness of each sealer were evaluated following ISO guidelines. The data were examined using the two-way ANOVA test. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction (XRD) examination was performed to investigate the crystalline phase of each type of sealer. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis was done for the chemical elemental analysis of each sealer.

RESULTS

The least film thickness, highest alkalinity, and highest calcium ion release were all displayed by AH Plus Bioceramic Sealer. High solubility, high alkalinity, intermediate calcium ion release, and intermediate film thickness were all displayed by Bio-C Sealer. While ADseal root canal sealer displayed the greatest film thickness, least solubility, alkalinity, and calcium ion release.

CONCLUSIONS

Both AH Plus Bioceramic Sealer and Bio-C Sealer represented adequate properties to be considered a good sealer that could be used as a potential alternative to resin-based root canal sealers.

Designing Calcium Silicate Cements with On-Demand Properties for Precision Endodontics

Calcium silicate (C3S) cements are available in kits that do not account for patients' specific needs or clinicians' preferences regarding setting time, radiopacity, mechanical, and handling properties. Moreover, slight variations in powder components and liquid content affect cement's properties and bioactivity. Unfortunately, it is virtually impossible to optimize several cement properties simultaneously via the traditional "one variable at a time" strategy, as inputs often induce trade-offs in properties (e.g., a higher water-to-powder ratio [W/P] increases flowability but decreases mechanical properties). Herein, we used Taguchi's methods and genetic algorithms (GAs) to simultaneously analyze the effect of multiple inputs (e.g., powder composition, radiopacifier concentration, and W/P) on setting time, pH, flowability, diametral tensile strength, and radiopacity, as well as prescribe recipes to produce cements with predicted properties. The properties of cements designed with GAs were experimentally tested, and the results matched the predictions. Finally, we show that the cements increased the genetic expression of odonto/osteogenic genes, alkaline phosphatase activity, and mineralization potential of dental pulp stem cells. Hence, GAs can produce cements with tailor-made properties and differentiation potential for personalized endodontic treatment.

Evaluation of swelling pressure of an expansive soil stabilized with lime and lignosulphonate as overlay cushion: an experimental and numerical quantification

Expansive soils are one of the most problematic soils faced by civil engineers in various construction activities. It has the property to swell with the addition of water and shrink on water removal. The volume change behavior of expansive soil occurs vastly during seasonal changes in moisture conditions and can be significantly attenuated by chemically stabilizing the soil. In this study, calcium lignosulphonate (LS), a biopolymer, is added to the soil to curtail the swelling nature of the soil. Lime (L) is also used to treat the soil, and a comparative study is carried out to examine the effectiveness of LS. The expansive soil is treated with several combinations of cushion layers with 1.5% LS, 2% L, 4% L, and combination of 1.5% LS and 2% lime. To counter the swell pressure of the expansive soil, the treated soil and additive composites are placed as a cushion layer over the expansive soil with the replacement ratio of 1:1 and 1:2, represented as configuration "a" and "b." The swelling pressure of the proposed arrangement is evaluated through the constant volume swell apparatus. The soil layers are inundated from the bottom upwards, and the swell pressure is determined for the various configuration adopted. The effectiveness of the stabilized soil cushion over expansive soil is analyzed through the numerical software PLAXIS 2D for further extension to field conditions. As the replacement thickness of stabilized soil increases, the swell pressure decreases. Nevertheless, the lime-treated soil layer depicted lesser swell than the LS-treated soils. Analyzing the conditions for field situations in numerical analysis yielded consistent results with the laboratory inferences.

Chemomechanical Properties and Biocompatibility of Various Premixed Putty-type Bioactive Ceramic Cements

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to evaluate the chemomechanical properties and biocompatibility of recently introduced premixed putty-type bioactive ceramic cements (PPBCs).

METHODS

Including ProRoot MTA (PMTA) as a control, BC RRM fast-set putty (BCPT), Well-Root PT (WRPT), One-Fil PT (OFPT), and Endocem MTA premixed (ECPM) were compared to evaluate setting time, radiopacity, pH change, and microhardness. Biocompatibility on human dental pulp cells was compared using CCK-8 assay. Mineralization potential was evaluated using alkaline phosphatase activity, Alizarin Red S (ARS) staining, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction with odontogenic gene marker. For data analysis, 1-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test were used at the significance level of 95%.

RESULTS

Among the PPBCs, BCPT presented the longest (552 ± 27) setting time (minutes) and others showed significantly shorter time than PMTA (334 ± 22) (P < .05). WRPT (6.20 ± 0.54) and OFPT (5.82 ± 0.50) showed significantly higher radiopacity values (mmAl) and others showed similar value compared with PMTA (P > .05). All PPBCs showed high alkaline pH from fresh materials and tended to increase according to time periods from 30 minutes to 12 hours. ECPM showed the highest value of microhardness (81.62 ± 5.90), WRPT showed similar, and others showed lower than PMTA (P < .05). All PPBCs showed biocompatibility in CCK-8 assay. All PPBCs showed similar or better value compared with PMTA in ALP and ARS staining, and ALP and DSPP marker expression (P < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

The PPBCs showed clinically acceptable chemomechanical properties and favorable mineralization potential.

Effect of long-term acid attack on impermeability and microstructure of compacted cement-bound soils

Compacted cement-bound soils (CCS) are widely used as leakage barriers around solid waste landfills and contaminated sites. However, a study of its long-term reliability in an acidic environment is relatively scarce. A 3-year-long experimental study on the changes in permeability coefficient and microstructure of CCS under acid attack was conducted, from which the following conclusions can be drawn: the permeability coefficient of CCS under weak acid (pH = 5.00) attack decreased progressively with time, from 4.90 × 10-8 cm/s at the beginning to 6.70 × 10-10 cm/s after 3 years. Under strongly acidic environments with pH values of 2.65 and 3.65, the permeability coefficients of CCS initially decreased and then increased with time, reaching 6.70 × 10-5 and 9.37 × 10-8 cm/s, respectively. The degradation effect of a weak acid (pH = 5.00) on the hydration products of cement was mild as a large amount of hydration products (e.g. C-S-H shaped in short fibrous) remained in the pores of CCS after 3 years of immersion. However, strong acid caused an obvious degradation effect on the hydration products, which almost disappeared after 3 years of immersion. Based on the study data, a unified mathematical model was developed to correlate the permeability coefficient of CCS, immersion time and acidic solution pH value. Furthermore, a quantitative expression function between the service life of CCS and solution pH value was established.

Calcium silicate biocomposites: effects of selenium oxide on the physico-mechanical features and theirin-vitrobiological assessments

Bone tissue regenerative material serves as a prospective recovery candidate with self-adaptable biological properties of bio-activation, degradability, compatibility, and antimicrobial efficacy instead of metallic implants. Such materials are highly expensive due to chemical reagents and complex synthesis procedures, making them unaffordable for patients with financial constraints. This research produced an efficient bone tissue regenerative material using inexpensive naturally occurring source materials, including silica sand and limestone. The extracted SiO2and CaO particles (75:25 wt%) were subjected to hydrothermal synthesis (water treatment instead of chemical solvents) to produce the CaSiO3biomaterial (code: S). Selenium oxide was doped with calcium silicate at 3, 5, and 10 wt.% to enhance its properties, yielding biocomposite materials (i.e. S3, S5, and S10). The physico-mechanical properties of these materials were investigated with x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, FESEM-EDS, and micro-universal testing machine. The results revealed that the synthesized biocomposites have a crystalline wollastonite phase with a porously fused rough surface. From structural parametric calculations, we found that the biocomposites have reduced particle size and enhanced surface area due to the influence of selenium oxide. The biocomposite S10, having high SeO2content, attained the maximum compressive strength of 75.2 MPa.In-vitrostudies of bioactivity, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity were performed. At 7 and 14 d of bioactivity, the synthesized biocomposites are capable of dissolving their ions into simulated body fluid (SBF) solution to precipitate hydroxyapatite and a required Ca/P ratio of 1.69 was achieved by S3. A comparative analysis has been performed on the degradation activity in Tris-HCl and the consequent pH changes during SBF treatment. The bio-analysis revealed that the biocomposite S3 shows enhanced bioactivity through a controlled degradation rate and secured cell viability of 88% at a concentration of 100 μg ml-1. It also offers significant bacterial inhibition potency againstE.coliandS.aureusbacteria.
