Abstract
It is unclear whether blood concentrations of copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca) influence skeletal muscle mass and strength in children. We aimed to explore the associations between plasma Cu, Mg, and Ca and skeletal muscle indicators in Chinese children. A total of 452 children aged 6 to 9 years old were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Whole body lean soft tissue mass (WLSTM), trunk lean soft tissue mass (TLSTM), and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Parameters of these indicators divided by Height2 (Ht2) and Weight (Wt) at the corresponding sites were calculated. Handgrip strength was also measured. Parameters of skeletal muscle indicators and handgrip strength that were below the sex-specific 20th percentile were considered low levels. Plasma concentrations of Cu, Mg, and Ca were measured using ICP-MS. After adjusting for several potential covariates, among the total subjects, for every one standard deviation increase in Cu concentrations, there was a 0.939% decrease in WLSTM/Wt, a 0.415% decrease in TLSTM/Wt, and a 0.47% decrease in ASMM/Wt. For every one standard deviation increase in Cu concentrations, there was a higher odd (OR: 1.36, 95%CI 1.06, 1.75) of low WLSTM/Wt, TLSTM/Wt (OR: 1.33, 95%CI 1.03, 1.71), ASMM/Ht2 (OR: 1.32, 95%CI 1.02, 1.69), as well as ASMM/Wt (OR: 1.56, 95%CI 1.23, 1.99). No significant associations were found between Mg, Ca, and most skeletal muscle indicators. Higher plasma Cu concentrations were adversely associated with skeletal muscle indicators at multiple sites in Chinese children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia (SP) is an aging-related loss of muscle mass and function, affecting the respiratory system. However, the causality of the association between sarcopenia on lung diseases remains elusive. METHODS The bidirectional univariate Mendelian randomization (UVMR), multivariate MR (MVMR) analysis, and mediation MR were utilized to systematically investigate the genetic causal relationship of SP and 11 respiratory diseases. Independent genomic variants related to sarcopenia or respiratory diseases were identified as instrumental variables (IVs), and the summary level data of genome-wide associated studies (GWAS) were obtained from the UK biobank and FinnGen. MVMR analysis was conducted to explore the mediation effects of body mass index (BMI), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), smoking, education attainment (EA), physical activity, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). RESULTS Forward UVMR analysis based on the primary method revealed that pneumoconiosis was associated with a higher risk of appendicular lean mass (ALM) (OR = 1.01, p = 0.03), and BMI (10.65%), smoking (10.65%), and physical activity (17.70%) had a mediating role in the effect of pneumoconiosis on ALM. In reverse MR analysis, we found that genetically predicted ALM was significantly associated with an increased risk of pulmonary embolism (PE) (OR = 1.24, p = 7.21E-05). Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (OR = 0.98, p = 0.002) and sarcoidosis (OR = 1.01, p = 0.004) were identified to increase the loss of left-hand grip strength (HGS). Conversely, the increase in left- HGS presented a protective effect on chronic bronchitis (CB) (OR = 0.35, p = 0.03), (OR = 0.80, p = 0.02), and asthma (OR = 0.78, p = 0.04). Similarly, the loss of the right-HGS elevated the risk of low respiratory tract infection (LRTI) (OR = 0.97, p = 0.02) and bronchiectasis (OR = 1.01, p = 0.03), which is also an independent protective factor for LRTI and asthma. In the aspects of low HGS, the risk of LRTI was increased after MVMR analysis, and the risk of sarcoidosis and pneumoconiosis was elevated in the reverse analysis. Lastly, asthma was found to be related to the loss of the usual walking pace, and the reverse MR analysis suggested a causal relationship between the usual walking pace and LRTI (OR = 0.32, p = 2.79 × 10-5), asthma (OR = 0.24, p = 2.09 × 10-6), COPD (OR = 0.22, p = 6.64 × 10-4), and PE(OR = 0.35, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS This data-driven MR analysis revealed SP was bidirectional causally associated with lung diseases, providing genetic evidence for further mechanistic and clinical studies to understand the crosstalk between SP and lung diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and function, brings multiple adverse outcomes including disability and death. Several sarcopenia consensuses have newly introduced the premorbid concept of possible sarcopenia and recommended early lifestyle interventions. Bidirectional transitions of premorbid states have been revealed in several chronic diseases yet not clarified in sarcopenia. This study aims to investigate the underlying transition patterns of sarcopenia states. METHODS The study utilized three waves of data from a nationally representative survey, the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), and included community-dwelling individuals aged 60 years and older with at least two sarcopenia states assessments based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria 2019 (AWGS2019) between 2011 and 2015. The estimated transition intensity and probability between non-sarcopenia, possible sarcopenia, sarcopenia, and death were investigated using multi-stage Markov (MSM) models. RESULTS The study comprised 4395 individuals (49.2% female, median age 67 years) with a total of 10 778 records of sarcopenia state assessment, and the mean follow-up period was 3.29 years. A total of 24.5% of individuals with a current state of possible sarcopenia returned to non-sarcopenia, 60.3% remained possible sarcopenia, 6.7% progressed to sarcopenia, and 8.5% died by the next follow-up. The transition intensity of recovery to non-sarcopenia (0.252, 95% CI 0.231-0.275) was 2.8 times greater than the deterioration to sarcopenia (0.090, 95% CI 0.080-0.100) for individuals with possible sarcopenia. For individuals with possible sarcopenia, the estimated probabilities of recovering to non-sarcopenia, progressing to sarcopenia, and transitioning to death within a 1-year observation were 0.181, 0.066, and 0.035, respectively. For individuals with sarcopenia, the estimated probabilities of recovering to non-sarcopenia, recovering to possible sarcopenia, and transitioning to death within 1-year observation were 0.016, 0.125, and 0.075, respectively. In covariables analysis, age, sex, body mass index, physical function impairment, smoking, hypertension, and diabetes are important factors influencing bidirectional transitions. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the bidirectional transitions of sarcopenia states among older adults and reveal a notable proportion of possible sarcopenia show potential for recovery in the natural course. Screening and intensifying interventions based on risk factors may facilitate a recovery transition.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Muscle strength is known to play an important role in the health of older adults. The health burden of cigarette smoking among older adults remains significant. We investigated the association between smoking cessation and dynapenia among older lifetime smokers in Korea. METHODS This study is a secondary dataset analysis of cross-sectional data from theKorea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016- 2019. We included 1450 participants aged 65-79 years, excluding those who had never smoked. Dynapenia was defined as grip strength <28 kg for men and <18 kg for women based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 criteria. Multivariable logistic regression analysis evaluated the association between smoking cessation and dynapenia. RESULTS Compared with current smokers, the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of dynapenia in former smokers was 0.66 (95% CI: 0.44-0.99). The AORs for smoking cessation periods of ≤10 years, 10-20 years, 20-30 years, and >30 years were 0.67 (95% CI: 0.39-1.16), 0.61 (95% CI: 0.36-1.03), 0.65 (95% CI: 0.37-1.14), and 0.52 (95% CI: 0.25-1.06), respectively. The AOR for dynapenia significantly decreased with the years since smoking cessation (p for trend=0.043). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that smoking cessation can reduce the likelihood of dynapenia among older lifetime smokers, with a decreasing likelihood trend associated with longer cessation periods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine whether risk factors for presarcopenia can be identified in a sample of early middle-aged men and women. DESIGN Prospective study. SETTING Longitudinal data from the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study were used to investigate the relationship between presarcopenia at age 45 years and selected early markers at ages 26, 32, and 38 years. PARTICIPANTS Longitudinal data from N=899 participants from the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study. INTERVENTIONS Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Presarcopenia was defined as low relative appendicular lean mass index assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and low strength assessed by grip strength. Logistic regressions were used to describe the association between selected markers and presarcopenia at age 45 years. RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression revealed that a higher body mass index (BMI) at ages 26, 32, and 38 years was associated with lower likelihood of presarcopenia at age 45 years in both men and women (odds ratio [OR] range, 0.46-0.64). Higher age-normative grip strength at age 38 years in both men and women (OR range, 0.88-0.92) was also associated with lower likelihood for presarcopenia. Lastly, lower self-perceived physical fitness level in men at age 38 years was associated with an increased likelihood of presarcopenia at age 45 years (OR, 9.35; 95% confidence interval, 3.28-26.70). CONCLUSIONS BMI and strength were associated with lower likelihood of presarcopenia during middle age. A higher likelihood of presarcopenia was associated with sex-specific lower self-perceived physical fitness. These modifiable biomarkers may serve as targets for clinical screening and early intervention aimed at slowing or preventing progression to sarcopenia in old age.

Abstract
Background The relationship between atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI) and sarcopenia has not been studied in the United States (US) population. Methods This research included 4,835 people from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2011 and 2018. The relationship between sarcopenia and TyG-BMI, as well as the AIP index, was examined through the utilization of restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, subgroup analysis, and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Diagnostic value of AIP and TyG-BMI for sarcopenia was compared by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results In this research, 428 people with sarcopenia were identified among the 4,835 subjects that were included in the experiment. AIP and sarcopenia were positively associated with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.58 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) of (1.07, 2.34) on fully adjusted multivariate logistic regression analysis. Similarly, TyG-BMI and sarcopenia were positively associated with an OR of 8.83 and a 95% CI of (5.46, 14.26). AIP and sarcopenia had a non-linear positive connection (P-value<0.001, P-Nonlinear=0.010), while TyG-BMI and sarcopenia had a linear positive correlation (P-value<0.001, P-Nonlinear=0.064), according to RCS analysis. Subgroup analyses showed a significant interaction between TyG-BMI and sarcopenia due to gender (P = 0.023). ROC curves showed that TyG-BMI (AUC:0.738, 95% CI: 0.714 - 0.761) was more useful than AIP (AUC:0.648, 95% CI: 0.622 - 0.673) in diagnosing sarcopenia. Conclusion In US adults aged 20-59 years, our study revealed a correlation between elevated AIP and TyG-BMI levels and heightened sarcopenia risk. Moreover, TyG-BMI has better diagnostic validity than AIP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of sarcopenia is increasing in worldwide with accelerated aging process. The high dietary protein intakes are associated with improved muscle mass and strength especially in Asian countries. However, there are few researches on amino acid levels or mechanism exploration. We conducted a case-control study to explore the amino acid metabolic characteristics and potential mechanism of elderly women with sarcopenia using targeted amino acid metabolomics approach combined with an analysis of dietary intake. METHODS For our case-control study, we recruited women (65-75 y) from a Shanghai community with 50 patients with sarcopenia and 50 healthy controls. The consensus updated by the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia in 2019 was used to screening for sarcopenia and control groups. We collected fasting blood samples and evaluated dietary intake. We used the amino acid-targeted metabolomics by ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to identify metabolic differentials between the case and control groups and significantly enriched metabolic pathways. RESULTS The case (sarcopenia) group had a lower intake of energy, protein, and high-quality protein (P < 0.05) compared to the control (healthy) group. We identified four differential amino acids: arginine (P < 0.001) and cystine (P = 0.003) were lower, and taurine (P = 0.001) were higher in the case group. CONCLUSION Low levels of arginine in elderly women are associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sarcopenia, characterized by progressive skeletal muscle loss, has emerged as a significant public health concern, with a global prevalence of 10-27%. While traditionally studied in geriatric populations, recent evidence indicates its impact on individuals aged 40 and above, with early manifestations of muscle decline. Primary care settings play a pivotal role in the early identification and management of sarcopenia, facilitating timely diagnosis and intervention. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia and its associated factors among individuals aged 40 and above attending a family medicine outpatient clinic. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in a family medicine outpatient clinic, including participants aged 40 and above. Participants underwent handgrip strength measurements, calf circumference measurements, and a 4-m walking test. Based on the criteria of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EGSWOP2), individuals with sarcopenia and those at risk of sarcopenia were identified. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used to assess nutritional status. Sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidities, and laboratory values were recorded. A comparison was made between individuals with normal muscle strength and those at risk of sarcopenia. RESULTS Among 213 individuals, 33 (15.4%) were at risk of sarcopenia (probable sarcopenia), and 12 (5.6%) were diagnosed with sarcopenia. There was a negative correlation observed between age and muscle strength (r=-0,339, p<0,001), and positive correlation was found between muscle strength and MNA score (r=0.301, p<0.001). Individuals with higher education and income levels exhibited higher muscle strength. Participants at risk of sarcopenia had higher prevalence rates of comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease (p=0.20, p<0.01, p=0.015, respectively). CONCLUSION Our study highlights the prevalence and associated factors of sarcopenia in individuals aged 40 and above emphasizing the need for screening and intervention strategies in primary care settings. The study findings support the role of primary care in addressing sarcopenia and improving patient outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is a progressive and systemic skeletal muscle disorder associated with an increased risk of hospitalization and adverse effects on survival. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and related risk factors of sarcopenia in people living with HIV using the revised European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) definition. METHODS This cross-sectional study comprising 379 patients with confirmed HIV infection evaluated the appendicular skeletal muscle mass by employing the bioelectrical impedance analysis method. Muscle strength and functional mobility were analyzed using the five-time sit-to-stand test and the timed "Up and Go" test. RESULTS The prevalence rates of pre-sarcopenia and sarcopenia among people living with HIV were 3.4 % and 2.1 % according to the revised EWGSOP2 definition. Advanced age (Odds Ratio 1.07, p = .03), lower body mass index (Odds Ratio 0.79, p = .012) and CD4+ T-cell count below 500/μl (Odds Ratio 2.22, p = .007) were identified as significant factors associated with sarcopenia. Sarcopenia was also identified as a significant correlate of frailty (p < .001). CONCLUSION This is the first study examining the prevalence of sarcopenia in people living with HIV according to the revised EWGSOP2 clinical algorithm. Advanced age, lower body mass index and a poor immune status are determined as promoting factors of sarcopenia. Sarcopenia significantly correlates with frailty. Standardized clinical algorithms are essential for reliable sarcopenia diagnosis in people living with HIV in order to promote intervention strategies and to prevent adverse health outcomes.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg), an essential nutrient with a wide area of physiological roles, stands as a cofactor in over 600 enzymatic reactions involved in the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, DNA repair, neuromuscular functions, neuronal transmission, cardiac rhythm regulation, and the modulation of metabolic pathways, as well as acting as a natural blocker for the calcium channels. Our objective was to highlight the most recent clinical data with respect to daily Mg intake (DMI) and metabolic traits, particularly type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). This was a PubMed-based review of the English-language medical papers across different key terms of search; the time frame was from January 2019 until April 2024. We included (clinically relevant) original studies and excluded cases reports, series, reviews, editorials, opinion, experimental studies, and non-human data as well as studies that did not specifically assessed DMI and only provided assays of serum Mg, studies on patients diagnosed with type 1 or secondary DM. A total of 30 studies were included and we organized the key findings into several sections as follows. Studies investigating DMI in relationship with the adherence to local recommendations in diabetic subjects (n = 2, one transversal and another retrospective cohort; N = 2823) found that most of them had lower DMI. Deficient DMI was correlated with the risk of developing/having DM across five studies (n = 5, one prospective and four of cross-sectional design; N = 47,166). An inverse correlation between DMI and DM prevalence was identified, but these data are presented amid a rather heterogeneous spectrum. Four novel studies (N = 7279) analysed the relationship between DMI and DM control according to various methods (HbA1c, fasting and postprandial glycaemia, and insulin); the association may be linear in diabetic subjects only at certain levels of DMI; additionally, the multifactorial influence on HBA1c should take into consideration this dietary determinant, as well, but there are no homogenous results. Three studies concerning DMI and diabetic complications (one cross-sectional, one prospective, and another case-control study) in terms of retinopathy (n = 1, N = 3794) and nephropathy (n = 2, N = 4805) suggested a lower DMI was associated with a higher risk of such complications. Additionally, two other studies (one prospective and one retrospective cohort) focused on mortality (N = 6744), which, taking only certain mortality indicators into consideration, might be decreased in the subgroups with a higher DMI. Seven studies (N = 30,610) analysed the perspective of DMI in the general population with the endpoint of different features amid glucose profile, particularly, insulin resistance. Concerning HOMA-IR, there were three confirmatory studies and one non-confirmatory, while fasting plasma glucose was highlighted as inversely correlated with a DMI (n = 1). The highest level of evidence regarding Mg supplementation effects on glucose metabolism stands on seven randomised controlled trials (N = 350). However, the sample size was reduced (from 14 to 86 individuals per study, either diabetic or pre-diabetic) and outcomes were rather discordant. These clinical aspects are essential from a multidisciplinary perspective and further trials are mandatory to address the current areas of discordant results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive symptoms and sarcopenia, often observed among middle-aged and elderly individuals, are significant health concerns in China, particularly given the country's rapidly aging population. Depressive symptoms, characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest, can significantly impact quality of life. Little is known about the underlying pathway connecting these two conditions. METHODS The data for this study were derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CSED) scale. Logistic regression analyses were employed to investigate the association between depressive symptoms, activities of daily living (ADL) disability, and sarcopenia, while adjusting for potential confounding factors. The selection of predictor variables, including social activity, chronic diseases, demographic factors, and lifestyle habits, was based on their known associations with mental health, physical functioning and sarcopenia. These variables were included to ensure a comprehensive adjustment for potential confounding factors and to provide a more accurate estimation of the relationship between depressive symptoms and sarcopenia. Additionally, mediation analysis was conducted to assess the mediating role of ADL disability in the relationship between depressive symptoms and sarcopenia. RESULTS A comprehensive study was conducted on a total of 8,238 participants aged 45 years and older, comprising 3,358 men and 4,880 women. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify significant associations between depressive symptoms (OR = 1.30, P = 0.0269,95%CI = 1.03-1.63), ADL disability (OR = 1.94, P < 0.001,95%CI = 1.37-2.75) and sarcopenia. The results revealed significant relationships among these variables. Furthermore, mediation effect analyses demonstrated that ADL disability partially mediated the association between depressive symptoms and sarcopenia (estimated indirect effect: 0.006, 95% CI: 0.003, 0.008, proportion of mediation effect: 20.00%). CONCLUSIONS The study underscores a significant association between depressive symptoms and sarcopenia among middle-aged and elderly individuals in China, with ADL disability acting as a mediator. These findings offer novel insights for targeted health interventions. Future interventions should effectively combat sarcopenia by integrating psychological support with muscle-strengthening exercise programs. By addressing both depressive symptoms and ADL disability, clinicians and public health professionals can enhance outcomes for this demographic. Collaborative efforts across disciplines are essential for providing comprehensive health management tailored to the needs of middle-aged and elderly individuals. Future research should longitudinally assess the impact of such integrated interventions on sarcopenia prevention and depressive symptom alleviation. Additionally, investigating the role of social and environmental factors in mediating this relationship is crucial for developing more effective health strategies for this vulnerable population.

Abstract
Sarcopenia, a musculoskeletal disease characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and physical performance, presents significant challenges to global public health due to its adverse effects on mobility, morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. This comprehensive review explores the intricate connections between sarcopenia and low birth weight (LBW), emphasizing the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) hypothesis, inflammatory processes (inflammaging), mitochondrial dysfunction, circadian rhythm disruptions, epigenetic mechanisms, and genetic variations revealed through genome-wide studies (GWAS). A systematic search strategy was developed using PubMed to identify relevant English-language publications on sarcopenia, LBW, DOHaD, inflammaging, mitochondrial dysfunction, circadian disruption, epigenetic mechanisms, and GWAS. The publications consist of 46.2% reviews, 21.2% cohort studies, 4.8% systematic reviews, 1.9% cross-sectional studies, 13.4% animal studies, 4.8% genome-wide studies, 5.8% epigenome-wide studies, and 1.9% book chapters. The review identified key factors contributing to sarcopenia development, including the DOHaD hypothesis, LBW impact on muscle mass, inflammaging, mitochondrial dysfunction, the influence of clock genes, the role of epigenetic mechanisms, and genetic variations revealed through GWAS. The DOHaD theory suggests that LBW induces epigenetic alterations during foetal development, impacting long-term health outcomes, including the early onset of sarcopenia. LBW correlates with reduced muscle mass, grip strength, and lean body mass in adulthood, increasing the risk of sarcopenia. Chronic inflammation (inflammaging) and mitochondrial dysfunction contribute to sarcopenia, with LBW linked to increased oxidative stress and dysfunction. Disrupted circadian rhythms, regulated by genes such as BMAL1 and CLOCK, are associated with both LBW and sarcopenia, impacting lipid metabolism, muscle mass, and the ageing process. Early-life exposures, including LBW, induce epigenetic modifications like DNA methylation (DNAm) and histone changes, playing a pivotal role in sarcopenia development. Genome-wide studies have identified candidate genes and variants associated with lean body mass, muscle weakness, and sarcopenia, providing insights into genetic factors contributing to the disorder. LBW emerges as a potential early predictor of sarcopenia development, reflecting the impact of intrauterine exposures on long-term health outcomes. Understanding the complex interplay between LBW with inflammaging, mitochondrial dysfunction, circadian disruption, and epigenetic factors is essential for elucidating the pathogenesis of sarcopenia and developing targeted interventions. Future research on GWAS and the underlying mechanisms of LBW-associated sarcopenia is warranted to inform preventive strategies and improve public health outcomes.

Abstract
Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is defined as the combination of excess fat mass (obesity) and low skeletal muscle mass and function (sarcopenia). The identification and classification of factors related to SO would favor better prevention and diagnosis. The present article aimed to (i) define a list of factors related with SO based on literature analysis, (ii) identify clinical conditions linked with SO development from literature search and (iii) evaluate their relevance and the potential research gaps by consulting an expert panel. From 4746 articles screened, 240 articles were selected for extraction of the factors associated with SO. Factors were classified according to their frequency in the literature. Clinical conditions were also recorded. Then, they were evaluated by a panel of expert for evaluation of their relevance in SO development. Experts also suggested additional factors. Thirty-nine unique factors were extracted from the papers and additional eleven factors suggested by a panel of experts in the SO field. The frequency in the literature showed insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, lack of exercise training, inflammation and hypertension as the most frequent factors associated with SO whereas experts ranked low spontaneous physical activity, protein and energy intakes, low exercise training and aging as the most important. Although literature and expert panel presented some differences, this first list of associated factors could help to identify patients at risk of SO. Further work is needed to confirm the contribution of factors associated with SO among the population overtime or in randomized controlled trials to demonstrate causality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The updated European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) recommends handgrip strength (HGS) and the chair stand test (CST) to assess muscle strength, with the CST being a convenient proxy for lower limb strength. However, adiposity may differentially influence these strength criteria and produce discrepant sarcopenia prevalence. OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of sarcopenia using HGS or the CST, and to investigate the associations between these strength criteria and adiposity in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS The EWGSOP2 definition was used to assess the prevalence of probable (low muscle strength), confirmed (plus low muscle mass) and severe (plus poor physical performance) sarcopenia. Linear regression models were used to study the association between different measures of muscle strength and adiposity. RESULTS We used data from 732 adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (35.7% female, aged 64 ± 8 years, body mass index 30.7 ± 5.0 kg/m2). Using the CST compared with HGS produced a higher prevalence of probable (31.7% vs. 7.1%), confirmed (5.6% vs. 1.6%) and severe (1.0% vs. 0.3%) sarcopenia, with poor agreement between strength criteria to identify probable sarcopenia. CST performance, but not HGS, was significantly associated with all measures of adiposity in unadjusted and adjusted models. CONCLUSIONS Higher levels of adiposity may impact CST performance, but not HGS, resulting in a higher prevalence of sarcopenia in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Consideration should be paid to the most appropriate measure of muscle function in this population.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Sarcopenia is a wasting disease, mostly age-related in which muscle strength and mass decline, such as physical performance. With aging, both lower dietary protein intake and anabolic resistance lead to sarcopenia. Moreover, aging and sarcopenia display low-grade inflammation, which also worsen muscle condition. In this review, we focused on these two main targets to study dietary strategies. RECENT FINDINGS The better understanding in mechanisms involved in sarcopenia helps building combined dietary approaches including physical activity that would slow the disease progression. New approaches include better understanding in the choice of quality proteins, their amount and schedule and the association with antioxidative nutrients. SUMMARY First, anabolic resistance can be countered by increasing significantly protein intake. If increasing amount remains insufficient, the evenly delivery protein schedule provides interesting results on muscle strength. Quality of protein is also to consider for decreasing risk for sarcopenia, because varying sources of proteins appears relevant with increasing plant-based proteins ratio. Although new techniques have been developed, as plant-based proteins display a lower availability, we need to ensure an adapted overall amount of proteins. Finally, specific enrichment with leucine from whey protein remains the dietary combined approach most studied and studies on citrulline provide interesting results. As cofactor at the edge between anabolic and antioxidative properties, vitamin D supplementation is to recommend. Antioxidative dietary strategies include both fibers, vitamins, micronutrients and polyphenols from various sources for positive effects on physical performance. The ω 3 -polyunsaturated fatty acids also display positive modifications on body composition. Gut microbiota modifiers, such as prebiotics, are promising pathways to improve muscle mass and function and body composition in sarcopenic patients. Nutritional interventions could be enhanced by combination with physical activity on sarcopenia. In healthy older adults, promoting change in lifestyle to get near a Mediterranean diet could be one of the best options. In sarcopenia adults in which lifestyle changes appears unprobable, specific enrichement potentialized with physical activity will help in the struggle against sarcopenia. Longitudinal data are lacking, which makes it hard to draw strong conclusions. However, the effects of a physical activity combined with a set of nutrition interventions on sarcopenia seems promising.

Abstract
Background Osteosarcopenia is a common condition characterized by the loss of both bone and muscle mass, which can lead to an increased risk of fractures and disability in older adults. The study aimed to elucidate the response of various mouse strains to treatment with Rg3, one of the leading ginsenosides, on musculoskeletal traits and immune function, and their correlation. Methods Six Collaborative Cross (CC) founder strains induced muscle atrophy and bone loss with dexamethasone (15 mg/kg) treatment for 1 month, and half of the mice for each strain were orally administered Rg3 (20 mg/kg). Different responses were observed depending on genetic background and Rg3 treatment. Results Rg3 significantly increased grip strength, running performance, and expression of muscle and bone health-related genes in a two-way analysis of variance considering the genetic backgrounds and Rg3 treatment. Significant improvements in grip strength, running performance, bone area, and muscle mass, and the increased gene expression were observed in specific strains of PWK/PhJ. For traits related to muscle, bone, and immune functions, significant correlations between traits were confirmed following Rg3 administration compared with control mice. The phenotyping analysis was compiled into a public web resource called Rg3-OsteoSarco. Conclusion This highlights the complex interplay between genetic determinants, pathogenesis of muscle atrophy and bone loss, and phytochemical bioactivity and the need to move away from single inbred mouse models to improve their translatability to genetically diverse humans. Rg3-OsteoSarco highlights the use of CC founder strains as a valuable tool in the field of personalized nutrition.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is defined as an age-related decline in muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. Eating alone has been linked to various health issues in older adults. This study investigated the relationship between eating alone and handgrip strength (HGS) in older adults using data from 7278 individuals (≥65 years) who participated in the 2014-2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. HGS was measured using a digital grip strength dynamometer, relative HGS was calculated by dividing HGS by body mass index, and dynapenia was defined as an HGS < 28 kg for men and <18 kg for women. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that women who ate two meals alone were more likely to exhibit dynapenia than those who never ate alone (odds ratio [OR], 1.3; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03-1.77). If the groups that never ate alone or ate one meal alone were combined as the reference group, the probability of dynapenia was higher in the combined groups that ate two or three meals alone (OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.04-1.50). No association was observed between eating alone and dynapenia in men. This suggests that eating alone is a modifiable related factor of dynapenia in older women.

Abstract
Background Current epidemiological evidence points to an association between micronutrient (MN) intake and sarcopenia, but studies have focused on single MN, and no combined effects on MNs have been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between different MN intake patterns and sarcopenia and skeletal muscle mass. Methods We performed a population-based cross-sectional study, with a total of 5,256 U.S. adults aged 20-59 years, and we collected total daily MN intake and appendicular skeletal muscle mass measured by Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to obtain nutrient patterns and principal component scores based on the intake of 14 MNs, and logistic regression analysis was used to assess the effects of single MN and MN intake patterns on sarcopenia and muscle mass. Results We defined three MN intake patterns by PCA: (1) adherence to VitB-mineral, high intake of vitamin B and minerals; (2) adherence to VitAD-Ca-VB12, high intake of vitamin A, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin B12; and (3) adherence to Antioxidant Vit, high intake of antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, and K. These three nutrient patterns explained 73.26% of the variance of the population. A negative association was observed between most single MN intakes and sarcopenia, and after adjusting for confounders, adherence to the highest tertile of the three nutrient patterns was associated with a lower risk of sarcopenia and relatively higher skeletal muscle mass compared to the lowest adherence. In subgroup analysis, MN intake patterns were significantly correlated with sarcopenia in middle-aged females. Conclusion Nutritional patterns based on MN intake were significantly related to sarcopenia, indicating that MNs interact with each other while exerting their individual functions, and that MN dietary patterns may provide promising strategies for preventing the loss of muscle mass, with further prospective studies warranted in the future.

Abstract
In recent decades, following the spread of obesity, metabolic dysfunction has come to represent the leading cause of liver disease. The classical clinical presentation of the cirrhotic patient has, therefore, greatly changed, with a dramatic increase in subjects who appear overweight or obese. Due to an obesogenic lifestyle (lack of physical activity and overall malnutrition, with an excess of caloric intake together with a deficit of proteins and micronutrients), these patients frequently develop a complex clinical condition defined as sarcopenic obesity (SO). The interplay between cirrhosis and SO lies in the sharing of multiple pathogenetic mechanisms, including malnutrition/malabsorption, chronic inflammation, hyperammonemia and insulin resistance. The presence of SO worsens the outcome of cirrhotic patients, affecting overall morbidity and mortality. International nutrition and liver diseases societies strongly agree on recommending the use of food as an integral part of the healing process in the comprehensive management of these patients, including a reduction in caloric intake, protein and micronutrient supplementation and sodium restriction. Based on the pathophysiological paths shared by cirrhosis and SO, this narrative review aims to highlight the nutritional interventions currently advocated by international guidelines, as well as to provide hints on the possible role of micronutrients and nutraceuticals in the treatment of this multifaceted clinical condition.

Abstract
To investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with sarcopenia in Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We analyzed a cross-section of patients with RA participating in the Institute of Rheumatology Rheumatoid Arthritis cohort survey in 2021. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires, including a 5-item sarcopenia screening index (SARC-F). Patients with a SARC-F score of 4 or higher were categorized as having sarcopenia. Among 2416 Japanese patients with RA (2113 women and 303 men; mean age 63.9 years), 341 (14.1%) patients were categorized as having sarcopenia. In a multivariable analysis of patients of all ages, age, body mass index (BMI), disease duration, history of fracture, patient pain on a visual analog scale (VAS), patient or physician global assessments based on VAS, and use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs), and corticosteroids were significantly (P < 0.05) associated with sarcopenia. Disease duration, patient global assessments based on VAS, and use of NSAIDs and bDMARDs were significantly associated with sarcopenia among the patients aged < 65 years, whereas age, female sex, BMI, disease duration, history of fracture, patient pain VAS and global assessments based on VAS, and use of bDMARDs and corticosteroids were significantly associated with sarcopenia in patients aged ≥ 65 years. In Japanese patients with RA, age, BMI, disease duration, history of fracture, patient pain VAS and global assessments based on VAS, and use of NSAIDs, bDMARDs, and corticosteroids were associated with sarcopenia. Among older patients with RA, female sex was additionally associated with sarcopenia. Key Points • To our knowledge, this is the first report showing factors associated with sarcopenia in Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis using a large cohort database. • Age, BMI, disease duration, history of fracture, patient pain on a visual analog scale, and use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, and corticosteroids were associated with sarcopenia in Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Limited to elderly patients, female sex was also associated with sarcopenia.

Abstract
The number of middle-aged and elderly population is increasing every year. At the same time, the course of most chronic diseases worsens with age, which can be explained by significant changes in body composition, including redistribution and increase of fat mass and decrease in muscle and skeletal mass. Thus, a decrease in muscle mass becomes intrinsic for the body from the age of 40 and develops on average by 0.5-1.0% per year. The prevalence of patients with sarcopenia is estimated to be between 11 and 50% in different age groups of population: middle, elderly and senile. In addition, the decline in physical activity associated with the urbanization and automation of labor exacerbates the disease at a younger age, which predicts an increase in the number of such patients in the future. OBJECTIVE To determine the role of physical rehabilitation in sarcopenia. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic review including studies found in PubMed, MedLine, Scopus and Web of Science Core Collections databases for 2019-2022 was conducted. The used enrollment criteria were the following: systematic reviews, including cross-over or cohort studies targeting at persons aged from 40 to 90 years of both sexes, with available data on sarcopenia, its severe form or other combinations of physical performance markers called sarcopenia. The mandatory parameter for inclusion in the study was the presence of the effectiveness assessment of physical rehabilitation without limiting its parameters. The systematic review was performed in accordance with the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020. RESULTS The best kind of training are 30-60-minute comprehensive methods with predominance of resistance exercises with minimum duration of the course of 3 months and frequency of 3 inconsistent in-person trainings per week under the supervision of a specialist for patients with sarcopenia in order to increase muscle strength and mass, as well as performance. The intensity should consist of the following parameters: start with fewer sets but more repetitions (12-15) with less intensity (55% of maximum) and move to more sets with less repetition (4-6) and greater intensity (>80% of maximum). CONCLUSION This article describes the parameters of exercises that are most effective in terms of muscle strength and mass increase and safe for patients. The compilation and further study of this complex in practice are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE to relate Frailty Syndrome and sarcopenia in older adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus and identify potential risk factors for frailty and sarcopenia. METHOD this descriptive epidemiological study was conducted with 140 older adults in the municipality of Sinop, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The frailty phenotype was used for the assessment of Frailty Syndrome, and a physical assessment questionnaire with calf circumference measurement was used for the assessment of sarcopenia. RESULTS regarding Frailty Syndrome, a higher percentage was observed in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus compared to those without the disease (p = 0.00). Concerning the presence of sarcopenia, older adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus showed similar values, with no statistical significance (p = .74). Frailty Syndrome was associated with physical inactivity (95%CI: 3.29-56.55), age over 75 years (95%CI: 3.30- 27.82), low family income (95%CI: 1.80-50.98), and comorbidities (95%CI: 4.90-5.40). However, sarcopenia was associated with the presence of physical inactivity (95%CI: 1.26-10.44), low weight/ eutrophic (95%CI: 3.32-26.76), and malnutrition/nutritional risk (95%CI: 1.30-7.70) for older adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSION older adults with diabetes have a higher vulnerability to develop Frailty Syndrome, necessitating the adoption of preventive measures in primary healthcare.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The identification of risk factors for osteosarcopenia in older adults is important for planning preventative strategies in clinical practice. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors associated with osteosarcopenia in older adults using different diagnostic criteria. METHODS The sample included 171 community-dwelling older adults with a mean age of 79.4 ± 5.9 years and mean body mass index of 25.67 ± 4.70 kg/m2. We analyzed sociodemographic, biomarkers, lifestyle, and health condition data from participants of the "Projeto Idosos - Goiânia" cohort study. The outcome osteosarcopenia was defined as the simultaneous occurrence of sarcopenia and osteopenia. Osteopenia was diagnosed by low lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Sarcopenia was diagnosed using handgrip dynamometry and appendicular skeletal mass index assessed by DEXA following the criteria of the two European consensuses on sarcopenia (2010 and 2018). Two osteosarcopenia outcome variables were evaluated: OsteoSarc1 and OsteoSarc2 using the 2010 and 2018 European sarcopenia consensus criteria, respectively. Multivariate Poisson regression analysis was used to calculate the prevalence ratios (PRs). RESULTS The prevalence of OsteoSarc1 and OsteoSarc2 were 12.8% and 7.2%, respectively, with no significant gender differences. OsteoSarc1 was associated with low potassium (PR: 3.39, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.10-10.43) and malnutrition (PR: 3.84, 95% CI: 1.78-8.30). OsteoSarc2 was associated with being ≥80 years (PR: 7.64, 95% CI: 1.57-37.07), >4 years of education (PR: 3.25, 95% CI: 1.03-10.22), alcohol consumption (PR: 2.41, 95% CI: 1.01-5.77), low potassium (PR: 2.22, 95% CI: 1.45-6.87), low serum vitamin D (PR: 4.47, 95% CI: 1.68-11.88), and malnutrition (PR: 5.00, 95% CI: 1.06-23.51). CONCLUSIONS OsteoSarc1 had a higher prevalence. The risk factors associated with the two outcomes were malnutrition and potassium level, as well as other risk factors, such as alcohol consumption and low vitamin D level. These findings may contribute to the prevention or treatment of this health condition in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Widely adopted criteria suggest using either low handgrip strength or poor chair stand performance to identify probable sarcopenia. However, there are limited direct comparisons of these measures in relation to important clinical endpoints. We aimed to compare associations between these two measures of probable sarcopenia and all-cause mortality. METHODS Analyses included 7838 community-dwelling participants (55% women) aged 40-84 years from the seventh survey of the Tromsø Study (2015-2016), with handgrip strength assessed using a Jamar + Digital Dynamometer and a five-repetition chair stand test (5-CST) also undertaken. We generated sex-specific T-scores and categorised these as "not low", "low", and "very low" handgrip strength or 5-CST performance. Cox Proportional Hazard regression models were used to investigate associations between these two categorised performance scores and time to death (up to November 2020 ascertained from the Norwegian Cause of Death registry), adjusted for potential confounders including lifestyle factors and specific diseases. RESULTS A total of 233 deaths occurred (median follow-up 4.7 years) with 1- and 5-year mortality rates at 3.1 (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.1, 4.6) and 6.3 (95% CI 5.5, 7.2) per 1000 person-years, respectively. There was poor agreement between the handgrip strength and 5-CST categories for men (Cohen's kappa [κ] = 0.19) or women (κ = 0.20). Fully adjusted models including handgrip strength and 5-CST performance mutually adjusted for each other, showed higher mortality rates among participants with low (hazard ratio [HR] 1.22, 95% CI 0.87, 1.71) and very low (HR 1.68, 95% CI 1.02, 2.75) handgrip strength compared with the not low category. Similar associations, although stronger, were seen for low (HR 1.88, 95% CI 1.38, 2.56) and very low (HR 2.64, 95% CI 1.73, 4.03) 5-CST performance compared with the not low category. CONCLUSIONS We found poor agreement between T-score categories for handgrip strength and 5-CST performance and independent associations with mortality. Our findings suggest that these tests identify different people at risk when case-finding probable sarcopenia. As discussions on an international consensus for sarcopenia definitions proceed, testing both handgrip strength and chair stand performance should be recommended rather than viewing these as interchangeable assessments.

Abstract
Background There is increasing evidence pointing to a close relationship between sarcopenia and inflammatory bowel disease. However, it remains unclear whether or in which direction causal relationships exist, because these associations could be confounded. Methods We conducted a two-sample bidirectional mendelian randomization analysis using data from European genome-wide association studies of the appendicular lean mass(n = 450,243), walking pace(n = 459,915), grip strength (left hand, n = 461,026; right hand, n = 461,089), inflammatory bowel disease (25,042 patients and 34,915 controls), ulcerative colitis (12,366 patients and 33,609 controls), and Crohn's disease (12,194 patients and 28,072 controls) to investigate the causal relationship between sarcopenia-related traits and inflammatory bowel disease and its subtypes on each other. The inverse-variance weighted method was used as the primary analysis method to assess the causality, and a comprehensive sensitivity test was conducted. Results Genetically predicted appendicular lean mass was significantly associated with inflammatory bowel disease (OR = 0.916, 95%CI: 0.853-0.984, P = 0.017), ulcerative colitis (OR =0.888, 95%CI: 0.813-0.971, P = 0.009), and Crohn's disease (OR = 0.905, 95%CI: 0.820-0.999, P = 0.049). Similar results also revealed that the usual walking pace was causally associated with Crohn's disease (OR = 0.467, 95%CI: 0.239-0.914, P = 0.026). Reverse mendelian randomization analysis results found that genetic susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease, and Crohn's disease were associated with lower appendicular lean mass. A series of sensitivity analyses ensured the reliability of the present research results. Conclusion The mendelian randomization study supports a bidirectional causality between inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease and appendicular lean mass, but no such bidirectional causal relationship was found in ulcerative colitis. In addition, genetically predicted usual walking pace may reduce the risk of Crohn's disease. These findings have clinical implications for sarcopenia and inflammatory bowel disease management.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is a growing public health problem in older adults. Whether SO confers higher risk of cardiometabolic disease and mortality than obesity or sarcopenia alone is still a matter of debate. We focus on recent findings on SO and cardiometabolic health and mortality in older adults. RECENT FINDINGS SO is associated with increased mortality compared to non-sarcopenic obesity, but similar mortality risk compared to sarcopenia without obesity. SO is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and physical disability than obesity or sarcopenia alone. SO, in the presence of diabetes, is associated with the highest risk of CVD and chronic kidney disease. A definition and diagnostic criteria for SO has recently been proposed (ESPEN and EASO). SO is associated with more adverse outcomes overall than sarcopenia or obesity alone. Future research is required to assess the impact of the new SO definition on health outcomes.

Abstract
Children with fetal growth restriction (FGR) and its resultant low birthweight (LBW) are at a higher risk of developing various health problems later in life, including renal diseases, metabolic syndrome, and sarcopenia. The mechanism through which LBW caused by intrauterine hypoperfusion leads to these health problems has not been properly investigated. Oral supplementation with probiotics is expected to reduce these risks in children. In the present study, rat pups born with FGR-LBW after mild intrauterine hypoperfusion were supplemented with either Bifidobacterium breve (B. breve) or a vehicle from postnatal day 1 (P1) to P21. Splanchnic organs and skeletal muscles were evaluated at six weeks of age. Compared with the sham group, the LBW-vehicle group presented significant changes as follows: overgrowth from infancy to childhood; lighter weight of the liver, kidneys, and gastrocnemius and plantaris muscles; reduced height of villi in the ileum; and increased depth of crypts in the jejunum. Some of these changes were milder in the LBW-B.breve group. In conclusion, this rat model could be useful for investigating the mechanisms of how FGR-LBW leads to future health problems and for developing interventions for these problems. Supplementation with B. breve in early life may modestly attenuate these problems.

Abstract
Objectives Sarcopenia is well known to be associated with mortality, but there is a lack of evidence on the estimates of life expectancy (LE) for sarcopenia in China. This study aims to estimate total life expectancy (TLE) and sarcopenia-specific LE in community-dwelling older Chinese adults with and without sarcopenia. Methods This study included participants aged 60 years and older who enrolled in the cohort in 2011 and 2013 and at least completed one follow-up until 2015 as part of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The criteria for defining sarcopenia were based on the guidelines established by the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia in 2019. TLE and sarcopenia-specific LE were estimated for the total population and subgroups using continuous-time multistate modeling. Results A total of 6,029 participants (49.2% women) with an average age of 68.4 (SD: 6.56) years were included in the study. The baseline prevalence of sarcopenia and possible sarcopenia was 19.5 and 44.9%, respectively. We observed that sarcopenia stages naturally deteriorated to worse stages (including death, by 24.4%) and returned to better stages (17.1%) during a median follow-up of 3.92 years (IQR: 2.00 ~ 4.00). The average TLE at the age of 60 was 20.9 [95% CI: 20.2-21.5] years (22.1 [95% CI: 19.6-24.6] for non-sarcopenic older adults, 20.9 [95% CI: 19.5-22.3] for possible sarcopenic, and 18.7 [95% CI: 16.4-21.1] for sarcopenic). Men, former and current smokers, and those living in northwest China had less TLE. Sarcopenic older adults, those with lower education, those who are unmarried, those with agriculture hukou, and those living in rural and northwest China were expected to live fewer years with non-sarcopenia. Sarcopenic older people, men, those with agriculture hukou, and those living in rural and southwest China were expected to live more years with sarcopenia. Discussion The results improved our understanding of the relationship between sarcopenia and life expectancy. We suggested that targeted strategies should be considered in high-risk populations and underdeveloped regions to prevent sarcopenia and improve non-sarcopenic life years for the older population.

Abstract
Alcohol intake is a major modifiable risk factor for many diseases. Alcohol can also damage skeletal muscle health during ageing which in turn increases risk of sarcopenia, frailty and falls but this relationship is understudied. The aim of this study was to model the relationship between a full range of alcohol consumption and components of sarcopenic risk, skeletal muscle mass and function, in middle-aged and younger older-aged men and women. A cross-sectional analyses was undertaken of 196,561 white participants from the UK Biobank with longitudinal analysis also in 12,298 of these participants, with outcome measures for the latter repeated after around four years. For the cross-sectional analysis fractional polynomial curves were fitted in models of measures of skeletal muscle mass, appendicular lean mass/body mass index (ALM/BMI), fat-free mass as a percentage of body weight (FFM%) and grip strength, all predicted from alcohol consumption with models fitted for men and women separately. Alcohol consumption at baseline was based on the mean of up to five dietary recalls, typically over 16 months. Linear regression was used for longitudinal analyses to model the effects of alcohol consumption groups on these measures. All models were adjusted for covariates. In the cross-sectional analysis, modelled values of the muscle mass measures all showed a peak at medium levels of alcohol consumption and a steep decline with increasing alcohol consumption. Modelled differences in muscle mass from zero consumption of alcohol to 160 g/d ranged from 3.6 to 4.9% for ALM/BMI for men and women, respectively, and 3.6 to 6.1% for FFM%. Grip strength consistently increased with alcohol consumption. No association between alcohol consumption and muscle measures were seen in the longitudinal results. Our results suggest that higher levels of alcohol consumption could have detrimental effects on muscle mass in middle- and older-aged men and women.

Abstract
AIM To assess physical activity (PA) and nutritional status and their relationship with the sarcopenic phenotype of body composition in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). MATERIAL AND METHODS 104 women (mean age 59.5±8.7 years) with RA underwent clinical and laboratory examination, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The level of PA and nutritional status were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) questionnaires, respectively. RESULTS Sarcopenic phenotype was diagnosed in 37.1% of patients. Moderate and low PA levels were detected in 44.2 and 7.8%, respectively, risk of malnutrition - in 50% of persons. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, factors associated with the sarcopenic phenotype were determined: the frequency of vigorous PA<3 times a week [odds ratio - OR 5.12 (95% confidence interval - CI 1.15-22.94); p=0.032], walking <1 hour a day [OR 4.98 (95% CI 1.14-21.74); p=0.033], risk of malnutrition by MNA [OR 4.13 (95% CI 1.12-15.32); p=0.034], body mass index <25 kg/m2 [OR 8.11 (95% CI 1.86-35.32); p=0.006] and daily calcium intake <500 mg [OR 4.62 (95% CI 1.06-20.08); p=0.041]. CONCLUSION 52% of women with RA had moderate оr low PA levels, and 50% of patients were at risk of malnutrition. The risk of sarcopenic phenotype associated with a low frequency of vigorous PA, low walking time, risk of malnutrition, body mass index <25 kg/m2 and insufficient calcium intake.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review aims to reevaluate the role of minerals on muscle mass, muscle strength, physical performance, and the prevalence of sarcopenia in community-dwelling and institutionalized older adults. DESIGN Systematic review. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS In March 2022, a systematic search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Sciences using predefined search terms. Original studies on dietary mineral intake or mineral serum blood concentrations on muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance or the prevalence of sarcopenia in older adults (average age ≥65 years) were included. METHODS Eligibility screening and data extraction was performed by 2 independent reviewers. Quality assessment was performed with the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies. Risk of bias was evaluated using the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies-of Exposure (ROBINS-E) tool. RESULTS From the 15,622 identified articles, a total of 45 studies were included in the review, mainly being cross-sectional and observational studies. Moderate quality of evidence showed that selenium (n = 8) and magnesium (n = 7) were significantly associated with muscle mass, strength, and physical performance as well as the prevalence of sarcopenia. For calcium and zinc, no association could be found. For potassium, iron, sodium, and phosphorus, the association with sarcopenic outcomes remains unclear as not enough studies could be included or were nonconclusive (low quality of evidence). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS This systematic review shows a potential role for selenium and magnesium on the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia in older adults. More randomized controlled trials are warranted to determine the impact of minerals on sarcopenia in older adults.

Abstract
Background Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are closely interconnected and associated with adverse health outcomes. Osteosarcopenia is the concurrent presence of the two conditions and has rarely been reported in hemodialysis patients. Whether hemodialysis patients with osteosarcopenia are at greater risk of mortality than those with either condition alone remains unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of sarcopenia and its association with osteoporosis and to determine its impact on survival risk in hemodialysis patients. Methods A total of 209 adults undergoing hemodialysis were enrolled from the dialysis center in the West China Hospital of Sichuan University, and our study was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trial Register (number: ChiCTR2100043932). Muscle mass, handgrip strength, bone mineral density (BMD), and biochemical parameters were assessed. All deaths were recorded during a follow-up of 35.15 ± 15.37 months. Results Seventy-eight patients were diagnosed with sarcopenia, with a prevalence of 37.3%. After adjustment for potential confounders, age (OR=1.094, P <0.001), female sex (OR= 3.44, P =0.005), diabetes (OR=3.756, P =0.008), CRP (OR=1.09, P =0.015), serum magnesium (OR=0.755, p=0.042) and BMI (OR=0.701, P <0.001) were independently associated with sarcopenia. Among the 209 patients, 103 patients completed the BMD assessment. The prevalence of osteosarcopenia was 22.3%, while 20.4% of participants had sarcopenia alone and 12.6% had osteoporosis alone. The proportions of patients who died were 13.0% for nonsarcopenia&nonosteoporosis, 15.4% for osteoporosis alone, 47.6% for sarcopenia alone, and 52.2% for osteosarcopenia. Cox regression analysis showed that osteosarcopenia was independently associated with all-cause mortality (HR=3.74, 95% CI: 1.172-11.938), while osteoporosis alone and sarcopenia alone were not. Conclusion Patients undergoing hemodialysis had a high incidence of sarcopenia and osteosarcopenia, muscle mass and strength showed a significant association with BMD, and osteosarcopenia might have a powerful impact on mortality in those patients. Abstract
BACKGROUND The Sarcopenia Quality of Life (SarQoL) questionnaire has been translated into various languages. This study validated the Taiwanese version of the SarQoL (SarQoL-TW) questionnaire. METHODS Forward-backward translation was conducted, along with a test of the prefinal version of the translated questionnaire. To validate the psychometric properties of the questionnaire, 50 older adults with sarcopenia and 50 older adults without sarcopenia completed the SarQoL-TW, the Short Form12 Health Survey (SF-12), and the EQ-5D-3L questionnaire. Participants with sarcopenia were asked to complete the SarQoL-TW questionnaire once more after 2 weeks. Validating the psychometric properties of the SarQoL-TW questionnaire involved assessing its discriminative power, internal consistency, construct validity, test-retest reliability, and potential floor and ceiling effects. RESULTS The SarQoL-TW questionnaire was translated without major difficulties. The psychometric analysis revealed that older adults with sarcopenia scored significantly lower on the SarQoL-TW, both overall and in some of the domains. The Cronbach's alpha of 0.846 indicated high internal consistency. The SarQoL-TW questionnaire correlated well with similar constructs on the SF-12 and EQ-5D-3L for convergent validity and correlated weakly with distinct domains for divergent validity, confirming its favorable construct validity. The test-retest reliability was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.970). Neither floor nor ceiling effects were observed. CONCLUSION The SarQoL-TW questionnaire is a reliable and valid questionnaire, useful for assessing quality of life in older adults with sarcopenia in clinical practice and research.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus prevalence increases with increasing age. In older people with diabetes, frailty is a newly emerging and significant complication. Frailty induces body composition changes that influence the metabolic state and affect diabetes trajectory. Frailty appears to have a wide metabolic spectrum, which can present with an anorexic malnourished phenotype and a sarcopenic obese phenotype. The sarcopenic obese phenotype individuals have significant loss of muscle mass and increased visceral fat. This phenotype is characterised by increased insulin resistance and a synergistic increase in the cardiovascular risk more than that induced by obesity or sarcopenia alone. Therefore, in this phenotype, the trajectory of diabetes is accelerated, which needs further intensification of hypoglycaemic therapy and a focus on cardiovascular risk reduction. Anorexic malnourished individuals have significant weight loss and reduced insulin resistance. In this phenotype, the trajectory of diabetes is decelerated, which needs deintensification of hypoglycaemic therapy and a focus on symptom control and quality of life. In the sarcopenic obese phenotype, the early use of sodium-glucose transporter-2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists is reasonable due to their weight loss and cardio-renal protection properties. In the malnourished anorexic phenotype, the early use of long-acting insulin analogues is reasonable due to their weight gain and anabolic properties, regimen simplicity and the convenience of once-daily administration.

Identification and Characterization of Genomic Predictors of Sarcopenia and Sarcopenic Obesity Using UK Biobank Data. Nutrients 2023; 15:nu15030758. Abstract
The substantial decline in skeletal muscle mass, strength, and gait speed is a sign of severe sarcopenia, which may partly depend on genetic risk factors. So far, hundreds of genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with handgrip strength, lean mass and walking pace have been identified in the UK Biobank cohort; however, their pleiotropic effects on all three phenotypes have not been investigated. By combining summary statistics of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of handgrip strength, lean mass and walking pace, we have identified 78 independent SNPs (from 73 loci) associated with all three traits with consistent effect directions. Of the 78 SNPs, 55 polymorphisms were also associated with body fat percentage and 25 polymorphisms with type 2 diabetes (T2D), indicating that sarcopenia, obesity and T2D share many common risk alleles. Follow-up bioinformatic analysis revealed that sarcopenia risk alleles were associated with tiredness, falls in the last year, neuroticism, alcohol intake frequency, smoking, time spent watching television, higher salt, white bread, and processed meat intake; whereas protective alleles were positively associated with bone mineral density, serum testosterone, IGF1, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, height, intelligence, cognitive performance, educational attainment, income, physical activity, ground coffee drinking and healthier diet (muesli, cereal, wholemeal or wholegrain bread, potassium, magnesium, cheese, oily fish, protein, water, fruit, and vegetable intake). Furthermore, the literature data suggest that single-bout resistance exercise may induce significant changes in the expression of 26 of the 73 implicated genes in m. vastus lateralis, which may partly explain beneficial effects of strength training in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. In conclusion, we have identified and characterized 78 SNPs associated with sarcopenia and 55 SNPs with sarcopenic obesity in European-ancestry individuals from the UK Biobank.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the individual and combined association of walking pace and grip strength with all-cause mortality in Chilean adults. STUDY DESIGN 8813 participants (54.6 % women) from the MAUCO population-based cohort were included in this prospective study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Individual and combined associations of grip strength (normal or low grip) and walking pace (normal or slow walking) with all-cause mortality were investigated using Cox proportional-hazard models. Analyses were adjusted for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health-related factors. RESULTS Over a median follow-up of 4.74 years, 151 and 206 participants included in the analyses of walking pace and grip strength died. Individuals with low grip strength had a risk of dying 2.40 times (95 % CI: 1.64 to 3.51) higher than their counterparts with normal grip strength. Similar results were identified for slow walkers (HR: 1.77 [95 % CI: 1.25 to 2.50]). When the two factors were combined and the associations investigated, individuals with normal walking pace but with low grip strength had a higher risk of all-cause mortality than those with normal walking pace and normal grip strength (HR: 3.56 [95 % CI: 1.99 to 6.36]). The associations remained even after including a 1- and 2-year landmark period in the analyses. CONCLUSIONS Slow walking pace and low grip strength were associated with a higher risk of mortality (both in isolation and combined). These factors might be early markers of all-cause mortality, and should be measured more frequently in middle-aged and older adults in clinical practice.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a senile disease with high morbidity, serious complications and limited clinical treatments. Menopause increases the risk of sarcopenia in females, while the exact pathogenesis remains unclear. To systematically investigate the development of hormone-related sarcopenia, we established a model of sarcopenia by ovariectomy and recorded successive characteristic changes. Furthermore, we performed the transcriptome RNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis on this model to explore the underlying mechanism. In our study, we identified an integrated model combining obesity, osteoporosis and sarcopenia. Functional enrichment analyses showed that most of the significantly enriched pathways were down-regulated and closely correlated with endocrine and metabolism, muscle dysfunction, cognitive impairment and multiple important signaling pathways. We finally selected eight candidate genes to verify their expression levels. These findings confirmed the importance of estrogen in the maintenance of skeletal muscle function and homeostasis, and provided potential targets for further study on hormone-related sarcopenia.

Abstract
In 2018 the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) updated the definition of sarcopenia, with loss of muscle strength being the primary feature. The objective is to describe and associate sarcopenia and nutritional status in a group of Chilean older adults aged 65 years and older. METHODS Descriptive, associative and comparative study, with a cross-sectional design and a quanti-qualitative approach. A number of 155 institutionalized and community-dwelling Chilean older people aged 65 years and older participated in the study (year 2018). Sarcopenia was diagnosed using the algorithm proposed by the EWGSOP2. Muscle strength, muscle quantity and physical performance were assessed; Body Mass Index (BMI) and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) were used. Variables were described according to sex and age groups (65-69; 70-79; and ≥80 years). The association between sarcopenia and nutritional status was studied by the application of multivariate logistic regression analysis with adjustments for age and sex. RESULTS 49.7% and 5.2% of older adults had probable sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia, respectively; 52.9% and 7% had malnutrition by excess and by deficit, respectively, according to their BMI; and 33.5% had malnutrition according to the MNA. Participants with obesity had 3.2 times more risk of presenting sarcopenia, versus subjects with normal nutritional status (OR: 3.2; 95% CI; 1.24; 8.26). CONCLUSION Sarcopenia, as defined by the criteria of the EWGSOP2, depends on the nutritional status according to BMI in older people, with obese individuals being at greater risk of suffering from sarcopenia. Nearly 50% had probable sarcopenia, a condition that could be detected early with the purpose of taking preventive measures, such a nutritional approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Latent TGFβ binding protein 4 (LTBP4) modifies skeletal muscle function, and polymorphisms in this gene have been associated with a longer ambulation time in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. However, no studies associate these polymorphisms with an acquired muscle condition. AIM The study aims to determine whether three functional variants within the LTBP4 were associated with sarcopenia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). SUBJECTS AND METHODS We performed an analysis with 144 elderly individuals with T2DM, including 101 without sarcopenia and 43 with sarcopenia. Polymorphism frequency was determined by real-time PCR allelic discrimination TaqMan assay. RESULTS Under different genetic models, the univariant analysis did not show a significant association of any polymorphism with sarcopenia. But the multivariate model analysis showed that variant rs1131620 (OR 7.852, 95% CI 1.854-33.257, p = 0.005) was significantly associated with sarcopenia under a dominant model. Under the same analysis, the variants rs2303729 and rs10880 had a more discrete association (OR 3.537 95% CI 1.078-11.607, p = 0.037; OR 5.008, 95% CI 1.120-22.399, p = 0.035, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights the importance of studying LTBP4 polymorphisms associated with sarcopenia. These findings suggest that the rs1131620 polymorphism of the LTBP4 may be part of the observed sarcopenia process in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
The ability of individuals with end-stage osteoarthritis (OA) to functionally recover from total joint arthroplasty is highly inconsistent. The molecular mechanisms driving this heterogeneity have yet to be elucidated. Furthermore, OA disproportionately impacts females, suggesting a need for identifying female-specific therapeutic targets. We profiled the skeletal muscle transcriptome in females with end-stage OA (n = 20) undergoing total knee or hip arthroplasty using RNA-Seq. Single-gene differential expression (DE) analyses tested for DE genes between skeletal muscle overlaying the surgical (SX) joint and muscle from the contralateral (CTRL) leg. Network analyses were performed using Pathway-Level Information ExtractoR (PLIER) to summarize genes into latent variables (LVs), i.e., gene circuits, and link them to biological pathways. LV differences in SX versus CTRL muscle and across sources of muscle tissue (vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, or tensor fascia latae) were determined with ANOVA. Linear models tested for associations between LVs and muscle phenotype on the SX side (inflammation, function, and integrity). DE analysis revealed 360 DE genes (|Log2 fold-difference| ≥ 1, FDR ≤ 0.05) between the SX and CTRL limbs, many associated with inflammation and lipid metabolism. PLIER analyses revealed circuits associated with protein degradation and fibro-adipogenic cell gene expression. Muscle inflammation and function were linked to an LV associated with endothelial cell gene expression highlighting a potential regulatory role of endothelial cells within skeletal muscle. These findings may provide insight into potential therapeutic targets to improve OA rehabilitation before and/or following total joint replacement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is a progressive generalized skeletal muscle disorder that causes the accelerated loss of muscle mass and function. Osteoporosis is a systemic condition of the skeleton that results in low bone mass and quality. Several studies have suggested that osteoporosis and sarcopenia are interrelated; however, a few studies indicate the lack of a significant association between sarcopenia and osteoporosis. We aimed to evaluate the association between sarcopenia and osteoporosis via a systematic review and pooled analysis. METHODS From the inception of the PubMed and Embase databases until September 2022, we conducted a systematic search for studies evaluating the relationship between sarcopenia and osteoporosis. Study appraisal and synthesis methods: We included observational studies that provided 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and risk estimates. Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed the quality of the research. The random-effects model was applied to the pool analysis, and the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs were finally calculated. RESULTS The primary statistic was the mutual risk between sarcopenia and osteoporosis. According to the inclusion criteria, 56 studies (796,914 participants) were finally included. Sarcopenia was significantly correlative to the risk of osteoporosis (OR, 3.06; 95% CI, 2.30-4.08), and each standard deviation increase in relative appendicular skeletal muscle mass was significantly related to a decreased risk of osteoporosis (OR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.56-0.75). Osteoporosis observably referred to a higher risk of sarcopenia (OR, 2.63; 95% CI, 1.98-3.49). CONCLUSION Our research indicated that sarcopenia and osteoporosis are highly positively correlated. Osteoporosis is closely associated with the risk of sarcopenia. Our finding highlights the importance of sarcopenia screening for those at risk of osteoporosis, and vice versa. However, heterogeneity was noted among the studies, and this might have influenced the accuracy of the results. Therefore, the results of our study should be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
Aim – to evaluate the nutritional status and its relationship with the sarcopenic phenotype of body composition in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Material and methods. The study included 91 women aged 40 to 75 years with RA according to ACR/EULAR criteria (2010) and a disease duration of at least 1 year. A questionnaire, laboratory and densitometric examination were conducted. Nutritional status was assessed using a MNA (Mini Nutricial Assessment) questionnaire.Results. Malnutrition and at risk of malnutrition according to the MNA were detected in 44.0% of patients with RA. These patients differed from those with normal nutritional status with a higher risk of osteoporotic hip fractures according to FRAX (p=0.035), lower appendicular muscle mass (AMM) (p=0.048) and lower self-assessment of health status (p=0.012). Patients significantly differed in nutritional status according to MNA, daily intake of calcium with food, circumferences of the mid-upper arm, calf, waist and hips, depending on the presence of sarcopenic phenotype. Multivariate regression analysis showed that the sarcopenic phenotype was associated with a nutritional status according to MNA less than 24 points (odds ratio (OR) – 6.14; p=0.036), daily calcium intake less than 500 mg (OR=9.55; p=0.007) and mid-upper arm circumference less than 25 cm (OR=9.32; p=0.015).Conclusion. Malnutrition was found in almost half of the patients with RA. It was revealed that a low nutritional status according to the MNA, low calcium intake and mid-upper arm circumference less than 25 cm increased the risk of having a sarcopenic phenotype in women with RA.

Abstract
Background: Frailty, an age-related decline in physiological reserve, is an increasingly important concept in the management of chronic diseases. The implications of frailty in people with rheumatoid arthritis are not well understood. We undertook a systematic review to assess prevalence of frailty in people with rheumatoid arthritis, and the relationship between frailty and disease activity or clinical outcomes. Methods: We searched four electronic databases (January 2001 to April 2021) for observational studies assessing the prevalence of frailty (any frailty measure) in adults (≥18 years) with rheumatoid arthritis, or analysing the relationship between frailty and disease activity or clinical outcomes (e.g. quality of life, hospitalisation or mortality) in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Study quality was assessed using an adapted Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Screening, quality assessment and data extraction were performed independently by two reviewers. We used narrative synthesis. Results: We identified 17 analyses, from 14 different populations. 15/17 were cross-sectional. Studies used 11 different measures of frailty. Frailty prevalence ranged from 10% (frailty phenotype) to 36% (comprehensive rheumatologic assessment of frailty) in general adult populations with rheumatoid arthritis. In younger populations (<60 or <65 years) prevalence ranged from 2.4% (frailty phenotype) to 19.9% (Kihon checklist) while in older populations (>60 or >65) prevalence ranged from 31.2% (Kihon checklist) to 55% (Geriatric 8 tool). Frailty was cross-sectionally associated with higher disease activity (10/10 studies), lower physical function (7/7 studies) and longer disease duration (2/5 studies), and with hospitalization and osteoporotic fractures (1/1 study, 3.7 years follow-up). Conclusion: Frailty is common in rheumatoid arthritis, including those aged <65 years, and is associated with a range of adverse features. However, these is heterogeneity in how frailty is measured. Abstract
Background: Frailty, an age-related decline in physiological reserve, is an increasingly important concept in the management of chronic diseases. The implications of frailty in people with rheumatoid arthritis are not well understood. We undertook a systematic review to assess prevalence of frailty in people with rheumatoid arthritis, and the relationship between frailty and disease activity or clinical outcomes. Methods: We searched four electronic databases (January 2001 to April 2021) for observational studies assessing the prevalence of frailty (any frailty measure) in adults (≥18 years) with rheumatoid arthritis, or analysing the relationship between frailty and disease activity or clinical outcomes (e.g. quality of life, hospitalisation or mortality) in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Study quality was assessed using an adapted Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Screening, quality assessment and data extraction were performed independently by two reviewers. We used narrative synthesis. Results: We identified 17 analyses, from 14 different populations. 15/17 were cross-sectional. Studies used 11 different measures of frailty. Frailty prevalence ranged from 10% (frailty phenotype) to 36% (comprehensive rheumatologic assessment of frailty) in general adult populations with rheumatoid arthritis. In younger populations (<60 or <65 years) prevalence ranged from 2.4% (frailty phenotype) to 19.9% (Kihon checklist) while in older populations (>60 or >65) prevalence ranged from 31.2% (Kihon checklist) to 55% (Geriatric 8 tool). Frailty was cross-sectionally associated with higher disease activity (10/10 studies), lower physical function (7/7 studies) and longer disease duration (2/5 studies), and with hospitalization and osteoporotic fractures (1/1 study, 3.7 years follow-up). Conclusion: Frailty is common in rheumatoid arthritis, including those aged <65 years, and is associated with a range of adverse features. However, these is heterogeneity in how frailty is measured. We found few longitudinal studies making the impact of frailty on clinical outcomes over time and the extent to which frailty is caused by rheumatoid arthritis unclear.

Abstract
“Possible sarcopenia” may be defined as a low muscle strength assessed by handgrip strength (HGS) by sex. We examined the sex-specific association between low handgrip strength (LGS) and dietary factors for the prevention of sarcopenia in young and middle-aged Koreans. We used data from the 2014–2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 11,635 Korean adults with LGS and normal handgrip strength (NGS). The relationship between dietary factors, e.g., nutrients, foods, and dietary patterns, and HGS was evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analyses. In men, the LGS group had a higher proportion of energy from carbohydrates and a lower proportion of energy from proteins than the NGS group. The LGS group had lower protein, niacin, phosphorus, and iron densities in their diet than the NGS group. The odds of having LGS increased as intake of vitamin B1 (odds ratio (OR) 2.916, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.265–6.719), niacin (OR 2.286, 95% CI 1.095–4.774), phosphorus (OR 2.731, 95% CI 1.036–7.199), and iron (OR 2.591, 95% CI 1.102–6.088) decreased. In women with LGS, the odds of insufficient protein intake (OR 1.976, 95% CI 1.248–3.127) was significantly higher. This study suggests that adequate intake of protein, vitamin B1, niacin, phosphorus, and iron is beneficial for maintaining HGS.

Abstract
Sarcopenia in the elderly population is a public health challenge, and there are few data on its prevalence in Europe. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of sarcopenia in the elderly Polish population and its association with the level of obesity and co-existing diseases. We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study involving 823 men and 1177 women aged 65 years and older, randomly selected from the population living in the territory of the Republic of Poland between 2017 and 2020. We analyzed the results of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Risk of sarcopenia was assessed with the simple questionnaire to rapidly diagnose sarcopenia (SARC-F), and sarcopenic obesity risk was defined as the combination of anthropometry and SARC-F results. In addition, we collected disease data with an author questionnaire. The prevalence of risk of sarcopenia was 18.6% (22.3% in women and 13.2% in men), and its incidence significantly increased with age in both sexes. The risk of sarcopenic obesity was more common in women than in men, and it was higher in the older age group, except for sarcopenic obesity diagnosed by the WHR criteria. The group of elderly with concomitant diseases had a higher risk of developing sarcopenia, which emphasizes the need to monitor sarcopenia when concomitant diseases are diagnosed. In both groups, risk of sarcopenia was associated with motor and respiratory system diseases, type 2 diabetes, and neurological diseases. This study highlights that the risk of sarcopenia in the elderly population affects women to a greater extent than men. It is important to identify the elderly at risk of sarcopenia in routine clinical practice to develop long-term prevention strategies.

Abstract
Abstract
This review summarizes the evidence for the management of sarcopenia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in terms of drugs, exercise, and nutrition. Sarcopenia is a decrease in skeletal muscle mass and muscle strength or physical function. The prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with RA is higher than that in the general population. The treatment and management of sarcopenia in patients with RA are clinically important for long-term prognosis. One of the mechanisms of muscle metabolism is the pro-inflammatory cytokine pathway, which involves tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6), and is a common pathway in the pathogenesis of RA. Thus, TNF-α and IL-6 inhibitors may play a potential role in controlling sarcopenia. In exercise therapy, a combination of moderate resistance and aerobic exercise may be effective in improving muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical function; however, intense exercise may exacerbate the inflammatory response in RA. Regarding nutrition, protein intake is generally considered beneficial, but other nutrients such as vitamin D and carotenoids have also been studied. Overall, there remains a lack of concrete evidence on sarcopenia treatment and management in patients with RA from any perspective; more longitudinal and intervention studies are needed in the future.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a common disease defined as the loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and physical performance. Alcohol consumption is an uncertain risk factor for sarcopenia. Previous observational epidemiological studies have reported inconsistent results regarding the association between alcohol consumption and sarcopenia risk. This study aimed to investigate the association between alcohol consumption and sarcopenia. A literature review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library through April 2022 using keywords related to alcohol consumption and sarcopenia. The pooled odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated using a random effects model meta-analysis. The risk of bias of the studies was assessed using the Newcastle−Ottawa scale. Nineteen observational studies that reported 3826 sarcopenia patients among 422,870 participants were included in the qualitative analysis. Alcohol consumption was not significantly associated with sarcopenia risk (OR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.83 to 1.20; I2 = 60.6%). Alcohol consumption resulted in a non-significant decrease in the risk of sarcopenia in men (OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.46 to 1.07; I2 = 0.0%) and in women (OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 0.63 to 2.30; I2 = 75.8%). The subgroup analyses by age and alcohol consumption were significantly associated with an increased the risk of sarcopenia in <65 years (OR, 2.62; 95% CI, 1.22 to 5.62; I2 = 100%). This meta-analysis of observational studies indicated that alcohol consumption was not significantly associated with sarcopenia risk. However, there are factors influencing the association between alcohol consumption and sarcopenia, such as smoking and dietary patterns. Additional study of these confounding factors is needed for the systematic analysis of the association of alcohol consumption with sarcopenia in future studies.

Abstract
Background Screening for sarcopenia in the stroke population is an emerging concept in research and clinical practice. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of possible sarcopenia and its associated factors among older stroke survivors who visited the neurology and rehabilitation departments of three public hospitals in Malaysia. Methods We acquired data on sociodemographic characteristics, clinical profiles, malnutrition risk, dietary intake, physical activity level, and health-related quality of life. Possible sarcopenia was diagnosed in individuals with decreased calf circumference and low handgrip strength, as proposed by the Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia (2019). Finally, we performed descriptive analysis and binary logistic regression. Results Among 196 older adults with stroke (mean± standard deviation of age: 67.60 ± 5.70 years), 42.3% had possible sarcopenia, with a higher prevalence in the more advanced age group (≥70 years). In univariable analysis, possible sarcopenia was significantly associated with anthropometric indices, malnutrition risk, nutrient intake, physical activity level, and health-related quality of life. In multivariable analysis, body mass index (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=0.57; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.43–0.75) was the only factor associated with possible sarcopenia among individuals aged ≥70 years. Recurrent stroke (AOR=3.48; 95% CI, 1.02–11.92), body mass index (AOR=0.64; 95% CI, 0.54–0.76), and EQ-5D index (AOR=0.15; 95% CI, 0.03–0.78) were significantly associated with possible sarcopenia in the 60–69-year age group. Conclusion The prevalence of possible sarcopenia among community-dwelling older stroke survivors was high. Therefore, we recommend routine screening for possible sarcopenia to ensure early nutritional and exercise intervention.
