Abstract
Understanding the microflora inhabiting the reproductive tract is important for a better understanding of female physiology and reproductive health. The endometrial fluid from mice in three reproductive stages (A: Unproductive mice; B: Postovulatory mice; C: Postpartum mice) was extracted for microbial DNA extraction and sequencing. Phenotypic and functional analyses of endometrial microbial enrichment was undertaken using LefSe. The results showed 95 genera and 134 species of microorganisms in the uteri of mice. There were differentially distributed genera, among which Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Streptococcus were more abundant in the endometrial fluid of mice in the unproductive group. That of mice in the postovulatory group was colonized with Salmonella enterica and Campylobacter and was mainly enriched in metabolic pathways and steroid biosynthesis. The presence of Chlamydia, Enterococcus, Pseudomonadales, Acinetobacter, and Clostridium in the endometrial fluid of postpartum mice, in addition to the enrichment of the endocrine system and the Apelin and FoxO signaling pathways, resulted in a higher number of pathogenic pathways than in the other two groups. The results showed that the microbial diversity characteristics in the endometrium of mice in different reproductive states differed and that they could be involved in the regulation of animal reproduction through metabolic pathways and steroid biosynthesis, suggesting that reproductive diseases induced by microbial diversity alterations in the regulation of animal reproduction cannot be ignored.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (MI/R) can exacerbate the initial cardiac damage in the myocardial functional changes, including dysfunction of left ventricular contractility. Oestrogen has been proven to protect the cardiovascular system. However, whether the oestrogen or its metabolites play the main role in attenuating dysfunction of left ventricular contractility is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS This study used the LC-MS/MS to detect oestrogen and its metabolites in clinical serum samples (n = 62) with heart diseases. After correlation analysis with markers of myocardial injury including cTnI (P < 0.01), CK-MB (P < 0.05), and D-Dimer (P < 0.001), 16α-OHE1 was identified. The result from LC-MS/MS in female and ovariectomised (OVX) rat serum samples (n = 5) matched the findings in patients. In MI/R model of animal, the recovery of left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP), rate pressure product (RPP), dp/dtmax and dp/dtmin after MI/R in OVX or male group were worsened than those in female group. Also, the infarction area of OVX or male group was larger than that in females (n = 5, p < 0.01). Furthermore, LC3 II in the left ventricle of OVX and male group was lower than that in females (n = 5, p < 0.01) by immunofluorescence. In H9C2 cells, after the application of 16α-OHE1, the number of autophagosomes was further increased and other organelles improved in MI/R. Simultaneously, LC3 II, Beclin1, ATG5, and p-AMPK/AMPK were increased, and p-mTOR/mTOR was decreased (n = 3, p < 0.01) by Simple Western. CONCLUSION 16α-OHE1 could attenuate left ventricle contractility dysfunction via autophagy regulation after MI/R, which also offered fresh perspectives on therapeutical treatment for attenuating MI/R injury.

Abstract
The mechanisms of estrogen in glucose metabolism are well established; however, its role in glucose absorption remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of estrogen on glucose absorption in humans, mice, and SCBN intestinal epithelial cells. We first observed a correlation between estrogen and blood glucose in young women and found that glucose tolerance was significantly less in the premenstrual phase than in the preovulatory phase. Similarly, with decreased serum estradiol levels in ovariectomized mice, estrogen receptors alpha (ERα) and beta (ERβ) in the duodenum were reduced, and weight and abdominal fat increased significantly. The expression of sodium/glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) and glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) and glucose absorption in the duodenum decreased significantly. Estrogen significantly upregulated SGLT1 and GLUT2 expression in SCBN cells. Silencing of ERα, but not ERβ, reversed this trend, suggesting that ERα may be key to estrogen-regulating glucose transporters. A mechanistic study revealed that downstream, estrogen regulates the protein kinase C (PKC) pathway. Overall, our findings indicate that estrogen promotes glucose absorption, and estrogen and ERα deficiency can inhibit SGLT1 and GLUT2 expression through the PKC signaling pathway, thereby reducing glucose absorption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Genetic polymorphisms have been shown to influence several physiological traits, including dental and craniofacial characteristics. Understanding the clinical relevance of genetic polymorphisms in dental practice is crucial to personalize treatment plans and improve treatment outcomes. OBJECTIVE to evaluate the association between dental age and genetic polymorphisms in genes encoding estrogen receptors alpha and beta (ESR1 and ESR2, respectively) in a sample of Brazilian children. METHODOLOGY This retrospective cross-sectional study was performed with children undergoing orthodontic treatment. Patients with syndromes, congenital anomalies, craniofacial deformities, under hormonal or systemic treatment, and with a previous history of facial trauma were excluded. Panoramic radiographs were used to assess dental age according to the Demirjian, Goldstein, and Tanner method. A delta [dental age-chronological age (DA-CA)] was obtained, which shows whether the patient tends to have a normal, delayed (negative values), or advanced (positive values) dental age. DNA isolated from buccal cells was used to genotype four genetic polymorphisms: rs9340799 (A>G) and rs2234693 (C>T), located in ESR1; and rs1256049 (C>T) and rs4986938 (C>T), located in ESR2. A statistical analysis was performed and values of p<0.05 indicated statistical difference. RESULTS A total of 79 patients were included, 44 (55.70%) girls and 35 (44.30%) boys. The Demirjian, Goldstein, and Tanner method, in general, overestimated patients' age by 0.75 years. There was no difference in the delta of dental age between the sexes (p>0.05). Genetic polymorphisms in ESR1 and ESR2 were not associated with dental age (p>0.05). CONCLUSION The studied genetic polymorphisms in ESR1 and ESR2 were not associated with dental age in Brazilian children.

Abstract
Estrogen receptor (ER) signaling is a critical regulator of cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival in breast cancer (BC) and other hormone-sensitive cancers. In this review, we explore the mechanism of ER-dependent downstream signaling in BC and the role of estrogens as growth factors necessary for cancer invasion and dissemination. The significance of the clinical implications of ER signaling in BC, including the potential of endocrine therapies that target estrogens' synthesis and ER-dependent signal transmission, such as aromatase inhibitors or selective estrogen receptor modulators, is discussed. As a consequence, the challenges associated with the resistance to these therapies resulting from acquired ER mutations and potential strategies to overcome them are the critical point for the new treatment strategies' development.

Abstract
This study investigated the interplay between transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β1/T1 and TGF-β3/T3), and sex hormone receptors using our 3D in vitro cornea stroma model. Primary human corneal fibroblasts (HCFs) from healthy donors were plated in transwells at 106 cells/well and cultured for four weeks. HCFs were supplemented with stable vitamin C (VitC) and stimulated with T1 or T3. 3D construct proteins were analyzed for the androgen receptor (AR), progesterone receptor (PR), estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and beta (ERβ), luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR), follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR), gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRHR), KiSS1-derived peptide receptor (KiSS1R/GPR54), and follicle-stimulating hormone subunit beta (FSH-B). In female constructs, T1 significantly upregulated AR, PR, ERα, FSHR, GnRHR, and KiSS1R. In male constructs, T1 significantly downregulated FSHR and FSH-B and significantly upregulated ERα, ERβ, and GnRHR. T3 caused significant upregulation in expressions PR, ERα, ERβ, LHR, FSHR, and GNRHR in female constructs, and significant downregulation of AR, ERα, and FSHR in male constructs. Semi-quantitative Western blot findings present the interplay between sex hormone receptors and TGF-β isoforms in the corneal stroma, which is influenced by sex as a biological variable (SABV). Additional studies are warranted to fully delineate their interactions and signaling mechanisms.

Abstract
Honokiol (HNK) is a natural polyphenolic compound extracted from the bark and leaves of Magnolia grandiflora. It has been traditionally used as a medicinal compound to treat inflammatory diseases. HNK possesses numerous health benefits with a minimal level of toxicity. It can cross the blood-brain barrier and blood-cerebrospinal fluid, thus having significant bioavailability in the neurological tissues. HNK is a promising bioactive compound possesses neuroprotective, antimicrobial, anti-tumorigenic, anti-spasmodic, antidepressant, analgesic, and antithrombotic features . HNK can prevent the growth of several cancer types and haematological malignancies. Recent studies suggested its role in COVID-19 therapy. It binds effectively with several molecular targets, including apoptotic factors, chemokines, transcription factors, cell surface adhesion molecules, and kinases. HNK has excellent pharmacological features and a wide range of chemotherapeutic effects, and thus, researchers have increased interest in improving the therapeutic implications of HNK to the clinic as a novel agent. This review focused on the therapeutic implications of HNK, highlighting clinical and pharmacological features and the underlying mechanism of action.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Low back pain (LBP) is the world's leading cause of disability and is increasing in prevalence more rapidly than any other pain condition. Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration and facet joint osteoarthritis (FJOA) are two common causes of LBP, and both occur more frequently in elderly women than in other populations. Moreover, osteoarthritis (OA) and OA pain, regardless of the joint, are experienced by up to twice as many women as men, and this difference is amplified during menopause. Changes in estrogen may be an important contributor to these pain states. Receptors for estrogen have been found within IVD tissue and nearby joints, highlighting the potential roles of estrogen within and surrounding the IVDs and joints. In addition, estrogen supplementation has been shown to be effective at ameliorating IVD degeneration and OA progression, indicating its potential use as a therapeutic agent for people with LBP and OA pain. This review comprehensively examines the relationship between estrogen and these pain conditions by summarizing recent preclinical and clinical findings. The potential molecular mechanisms by which estrogen may relieve LBP associated with IVD degeneration and FJOA and OA pain are discussed.

Abstract
Stroke and perinatal asphyxia have detrimental effects on neuronal cells, causing millions of deaths worldwide each year. Since currently available therapies are insufficient, there is an urgent need for novel neuroprotective strategies to address the effects of cerebrovascular accidents. One such recent approach is based on the neuroprotective properties of estrogen receptors (ERs). However, activation of ERs by estrogens may contribute to the development of endometriosis or hormone-dependent cancers. Therefore, in this study, we utilized ospemifene, a novel selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) already used in dyspareunia treatment. Here, we demonstrated that posttreatment with ospemifene in primary neocortical cell cultures subjected to 18 h of hypoxia and/or ischemia followed by 6 h of reoxygenation has robust neuroprotective potential. Ospemifene partially reverses hypoxia- and ischemia-induced changes in LDH release, the degree of neurodegeneration, and metabolic activity. The mechanism of the neuroprotective actions of ospemifene involves the inhibition of apoptosis since the compound decreases caspase-3 overactivity during hypoxia and enhances mitochondrial membrane potential during ischemia. Moreover, in both models, ospemifene decreased the levels of the proapoptotic proteins BAX, FAS, FASL, and GSK3β while increasing the level of the antiapoptotic protein BCL2. Silencing of specific ERs showed that the neuroprotective actions of ospemifene are mediated mainly via ESR1 (during hypoxia and ischemia) and GPER1 (during hypoxia), which is supported by ospemifene-evoked increases in ESR1 protein levels in hypoxic and ischemic neurons. The results identify ospemifene as a promising neuroprotectant, which in the future may be used to treat injuries due to brain hypoxia/ischemia.

Abstract
Phytoestrogens (PEs) are estrogen-like nonsteroidal compounds derived from plants (e.g., nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables) and fungi that are structurally similar to 17β-estradiol. PEs bind to all types of estrogen receptors, including ERα and ERβ receptors, nuclear receptors, and a membrane-bound estrogen receptor known as the G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER). As endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) with pro- or antiestrogenic properties, PEs can potentially disrupt the hormonal regulation of homeostasis, resulting in developmental and reproductive abnormalities. However, a lack of PEs in the diet does not result in the development of deficiency symptoms. To properly assess the benefits and risks associated with the use of a PE-rich diet, it is necessary to distinguish between endocrine disruption (endocrine-mediated adverse effects) and nonspecific effects on the endocrine system. Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent disease of unknown etiopathogenesis, in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus with subsequent complications being manifested as a result of local inflammatory reactions. Endometriosis affects 10-15% of women of reproductive age and is associated with chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and infertility. In this review, the endocrine-disruptive actions of PEs are reviewed in the context of endometriosis to determine whether a PE-rich diet has a positive or negative effect on the risk and course of endometriosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, many COVID-19 variants have emerged, causing several waves of pandemics and many infections. Long COVID-19, or long-term sequelae after recovery from COVID-19, has aroused worldwide concern because it reduces patient quality of life after rehabilitation. We aimed to characterize the functional differential profile of the oral and gut microbiomes and serum metabolites in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms associated with long COVID-19. METHODS We prospectively collected oral, fecal, and serum samples from 983 antibiotic-naïve patients with mild COVID-19 and performed a 3-month follow-up postdischarge. Forty-five fecal and saliva samples, and 25 paired serum samples were collected from patients with gastrointestinal symptoms of long COVID-19 at follow-up and from healthy controls, respectively. Eight fecal and saliva samples were collected without gastrointestinal symptoms of long COVID-19 at follow-up. Shotgun metagenomic sequencing of fecal samples and 2bRAD-M sequencing of saliva samples were performed on these paired samples. Two published COVID-19 gut microbiota cohorts were analyzed for comparison. Paired serum samples were analyzed using widely targeted metabolomics. RESULTS Mild COVID-19 patients without gastrointestinal symptoms of long COVID-19 showed little difference in the gut and oral microbiota during hospitalization and at follow-up from healthy controls. The baseline and 3-month samples collected from patients with gastrointestinal symptoms associated with long COVID-19 showed significant differences, and ectopic colonization of the oral cavity by gut microbes including 27 common differentially abundant genera in the Proteobacteria phylum, was observed at the 3-month timepoint. Some of these bacteria, including Neisseria, Lautropia, and Agrobacterium, were highly related to differentially expressed serum metabolites with potential toxicity, such as 4-chlorophenylacetic acid, 5-sulfoxymethylfurfural, and estradiol valerate. CONCLUSIONS Our study characterized the changes in and correlations between the oral and gut microbiomes and serum metabolites in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms associated with long COVID-19. Additionally, our findings reveal that ectopically colonized bacteria from the gut to the oral cavity could exist in long COVID-19 patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, with a strong correlation to some potential harmful metabolites in serum.

Abstract
Ibuprofen (IBU) is an emerging environmental contaminant that, in high doses, can damage reproductive organs in humans and other mammals. Recently, its effects on the uterus have been investigated. It is known that the COX2-PGE2 pathway and Yes-associated protein (YAP) are involved in female reproductive organ development and form a COX2-PGE2-EP2-Gas-β-catenin-YAP-COX2 positive feedback loop, in addition, TT-10, a pharmacological product, has been found to increase YAP. In this study, IBU was orally administrated to female mice for 7 d at doses of 0, 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg·bw/day (control, low, medium, and high doses, respectively). In addition, 0, 50, 100, and 200 μmol/L IBU was added in vitro to cultured uterine cells for 7 d at control, low, medium, and high doses, respectively; then, 0, 5, 10, and 20 μmol/L TT-10 were given to the in vitro uterine culture containing 100 μmol/L IBU to observe the effect of YAP activation. The results showed that medium and high doses of IBU inhibited the COX2-PGE2 pathway, decreasing YAP and increasing pYAP, leading to reduced circPVT1, elevated miR-149, and increased apoptosis, ultimately damaging the uterus. Conversely, 10 μmol/L TT-10 maximally enhanced YAP, which regulated COX2-PGE2 pathway activation, increased circPVT1, and decreased miR-149, and promoted cell proliferation, preventing uterine damage. This suggests that IBU may cause uterine damage by inhibiting the COX2-PGE2 pathway and YAP, and that appropriate doses of TT-10 may repair this damage by elevating YAP and stimulating COX2 via the feedback loop.

Abstract
Endometrial hyperplasia is a threatening pathology driven by unopposed estrogen stimulus. Moreover, insulin may act on the endometrium, prompting further growth. We aimed at assessing whether D-chiro-Inositol, an insulin sensitizer with estrogen-lowering properties, might improve the condition of patients with simple endometrial hyperplasia without atypia. We enrolled women with simple endometrial hyperplasia without atypia and related symptoms, including abnormal uterine bleeding. We treated the patients with one tablet per day, containing 600 mg of D-chiro-inositol for six months. Patients underwent ultrasound to assess the thickness of the endometrium at baseline, after three months, and at the end of this study. Endometrial thickness went from 10.82 ± 1.15 mm to 8.00 ± 0.81 mm after three months (p < 0.001) and to 6.9 ± 1.06 mm after six months (p < 0.001 versus baseline; p < 0.001 versus three months). D-chiro-inositol treatment also improved heavy menstrual bleeding and the length of menstruation. Despite the fact that our data should be validated in larger studies with appropriate control groups, our promising results support the hypothesis that D-chiro-inositol may represent a useful treatment in the case of endometrial hyperplasia without atypia.

Abstract
Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) is widely expressed in reproductive organs, but also in non-reproductive tissues of females and males. There is evidence that lipocalin 2 (LCN2), which has diverse immunological and metabolic functions, is regulated by ERα in adipose tissue. However, in many other tissues, the impact of ERα on LCN2 expression has not been studied yet. Therefore, we used an Esr1-deficient mouse strain and analyzed LCN2 expression in reproductive (ovary, testes) and non-reproductive tissues (kidney, spleen, liver, lung) of both sexes. Tissues collected from adult wild-type (WT) and Esr1-deficient animals were analyzed by immunohistochemistry, Western blot analysis, and RT-qPCR for Lcn2 expression. In non-reproductive tissues, only minor genotype- or sex-specific differences in LCN2 expression were detected. In contrast, significant differences in LCN2 expression were observed in reproductive tissues. Particularly, there was a strong increase in LCN2 in Esr1-deficient ovaries when compared to WTs. In summary, we found an inverse correlation between the presence of ERα and the expression of LCN2 in testes and ovaries. Our results provide an important basis to better understand LCN2 regulation in the context of hormones and in health and disease.

Abstract
Multiple factors could affect estrogen levels in the body; however, the impact of exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals on estrogen levels in humans remains inconclusive. This cross-sectional study was to assess the association between blood levels of endocrine-disrupting metals (including cadmium, lead, and mercury) and serum estradiol levels in 1618 women (aged ≥20 years) who participated in the 2013-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Using multiple general linear models, we estimated percent changes of estradiol levels in association with blood metal concentrations. Age-specific analysis was further conducted. The median level of blood cadmium, lead, and mercury was 0.31µg/L (range: 0.07-7.23), 0.76µg/dL (0.11-12.80), and 0.73µg/L (0.20-36.90), respectively, and the median estradiol level was 31.10pg/mL (range, 2.12-523.00) among women aged 20-80 years. After adjusting for potential confounders, a 10% increase in blood cadmium and lead levels was associated with 1.43% (95% CI: 0.50, 2.37) increased levels and 1.45% (-2.17, -0.11) decreased levels of estrogen, respectively, in the total study population. When stratified by age, the positive association with cadmium was only seen in women aged 20-49 years [1.47% (0.39, 2.56) increased estradiol] and the inverse association with lead was seen among women aged 50-80 years [3.40% (-4.78, -2.00) decreased estradiol]. Mercury was not significantly associated with estrogen levels. Our study demonstrates a potential relationship between exposure to endocrine-disrupting cadmium and lead and serum estrogen levels in US women. Age-specific associations were observed. Prospective and mechanistic studies are warranted to further explore these interactions and the associated reproductive toxicities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gynecomastia is a common condition in clinical practice. The present study aimed to review the clinical data of ER-positive gynecomastia patients treated by tamoxifen (TAM) versus surgery and discussed the clinical effects of the two treatment strategies. METHOD We retrospectively collected the clinical indicators of patients with unilateral or bilateral gynecomastia who received treatment at our hospital between April 2018 and December 2021. Depending on the treatment received, the patients were divided into TAM and surgery groups. RESULT A total of 170 patients were recruited, including 91 patients in TAM group and 79 patients in surgery group. The age of the patients differed significantly between the TAM and surgery groups (P < 0.01). The estrogen level was closer in patients with stable and progressive disease, but significantly different in patients of glandular shrinkage in TAM group (P < 0.01). The proportion of patients achieving stable disease was higher among those with clinical grade 1-2. Among patients classified as clinical grade 3, the proportion of patients achieving glandular shrinkage of the breast was higher after TAM treatment (P < 0.05). The age and length of hospital stay were significantly different in patients undergoing open surgery than minimally invasive rotary cutting surgery and mammoscopic-assisted glandular resection (P < 0.01). Patients had significantly different complications including mild postoperative pain, hematoma, nipple necrosis, nipple paresthesias and effusions among the surgery subgroups (all P < 0.05). The estrogen level and the type of surgery were significantly different between the surgical recurrence and non-recurrence subgroups (P < 0.05). The difference in the thickness of glandular tissues upon the color Doppler ultrasound also reached a statistical significance between the two groups (P = 0.050). An elevated estrogen level was a factor leading to TAM failure. Among surgical patients, the thickness of glandular tissues, estrogen level, and type of surgery performed were risk factors for postoperative recurrence (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Both treatment strategies can effectively treat gynecomastia, but different treatment methods can benefit different patients. TAM treatment is more beneficial than surgery for patients who cannot tolerate surgery, have a low estrogen level, and are clinical grade 1-2. Surgery treatment is better than TAM for patients of clinical grade 3. Different surgery options may lead to different complications. Patients with a greater glandular tissue thickness and a higher estrogen level were shown to have a higher risk of recurrence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) has been implicated in activating autophagy by upregulating SIRT3 (Sirtuin 3) expression, thereby inhibiting the senescence of vascular endothelial cells. Herein, we further examined the molecular mechanisms that regulate SIRT3 expression in 17β-E2-induced autophagy. METHODS Reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction was employed to measure the expression of plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 (PVT1), microRNAs (miRNAs), and SIRT3, and the dual-luciferase assay was used to determine their interaction. Electron microscopy observes autophagosomes, green fluorescent protein-microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (GFP-LC3) staining, and immunoblot analysis with antibodies against LC3,beclin-1, and P62 were conducted to measure autophagy. Cellular senescence was determined using immunoblot analysis with anti-phosphorylated retinoblastoma and senescence-associated β-galactosidase staining. RESULTS Women with higher estrogen levels (during the 10-13th day of the menstrual cycle or premenopausal) exhibit markedly higher serum levels of PVT1 than women with lower estrogen levels (during the menstrual period or postmenopausal). The dual-luciferase assay showed that PVT1 acts as a sponge for miR-31, and miR-31 binds to its target gene, SIRT3. The 17β-E2 treatment increased the expression of PVT1 and SIRT3 and downregulated miR-31 expression in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Consistently, PVT1 overexpression suppresses miR-31 expression, promotes 17β-E2-induced autophagy, and inhibits H2O2-induced senescence. miR-31 inhibitor increases SIRT3 expression and leads to activation of 17β-E2-induced autophagy and suppression of H2O2-induced senescence. CONCLUSION Our findings demonstrated that 17β-E2 upregulates PVT1 gene expression and PVT1 functions as a sponge to inhibit miR-31, resulting in the upregulation of SIRT3 expression and activation of autophagy and subsequent inhibition of H2O2-induced senescence in HUVECs.

Abstract
BRCA mutations as a triggering factor in breast cancer have been reported to result in fertility problems and oocyte aging in young patients with cancer diagnosis. These patients are concerned about fertility problems and family planning before undergoing treatment modalities that may result in infertility. In this review, we conducted analysis of the literature on the association between BRCA mutations and infertility, possible fertility preservation options, and their safety and tried to gather results from different disciplines and points of view on the matter. Our aim is to provide a general summary of recent studies to provide further insight on the matter for counseling BRCA mutation carriers on fertility preservation methods and their implications.

Abstract
The role of steroid hormones against infectious diseases has been extensively studied. From immunomodulatory action to direct inhibition of microorganism growth, hormones D3 (VD3) and 17β-estradiol (E2), and the genetic pathways modulated by them, are key targets for a better understanding pathogenesis of infectious respiratory diseases (IRD) such as tuberculosis (TB) and the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). Currently, the world faces two major public health problems, the outbreak of COVID-19, accounting for more than 6 million so far, and TB, more than 1 million deaths per year. Both, although resulting from different pathogens, the Mtb and the SARS-CoV-2, respectively, are considered serious and epidemic. TB and COVID-19 present similar infection rates between men and women, however the number of complications and deaths resulting from the two infections is higher in men when compared to women in childbearing age, which may indicate a role of the sex hormone E2 in the context of these diseases. E2 and VD3 act upon key gene pathways as important immunomodulatory players and supporting molecules in IRDs. This review summarizes the main roles of these hormones (VD3 and E2) in modulating immune and inflammatory responses and their relationship with TB and COVID-19.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is not well understood, especially in terms of immunity and inflammation, and there are currently no early diagnostic or treatment methods. In this study, we obtained six existing Gene Expression Omnibus transcriptome datasets from the blood of ASD patients. We performed functional enrichment analysis, PPI analysis, CIBERSORT algorithm, and Spearman correlation analysis, with a focus on expression profiling in hub genes and immune cells. We validated that monocytes and nonclassical monocytes were upregulated in the ASD group using peripheral blood (30 children with ASD and 30 age and sex-matched typically developing children) using flow cytometry. The receiver operating characteristic curves (PSMC4 and ALAS2) and analysis stratified by ASD severity (LIlRB1 and CD69) showed that they had predictive value using the "training" and verification groups. Three immune cell types - monocytes, M2 macrophages, and activated dendritic cells - had different degrees of correlation with 15 identified hub genes. In addition, we analyzed the miRNA-mRNA network and agents-gene interactions using miRNA databases (starBase and miRDB) and the DSigDB database. Two miRNAs (miR-342-3p and miR-1321) and 23 agents were linked with ASD. These findings suggest that dysregulation of the immune system may contribute to ASD development, especially dysregulation of monocytes and monocyte-derived cells. ASD-related hub genes may serve as potential predictors for ASD, and the potential ASD-related miRNAs and agents identified here may open up new strategies for the prevention and treatment of ASD.

Abstract
Turner syndrome (TS) is a condition in females missing the second sex chromosome (45,X) or parts thereof. It is considered a rare genetic condition and is associated with a wide range of clinical stigmata, such as short stature, ovarian dysgenesis, delayed puberty and infertility, congenital malformations, endocrine disorders, including a range of autoimmune conditions and type 2 diabetes, and neurocognitive deficits. Morbidity and mortality are clearly increased compared with the general population and the average age at diagnosis is quite delayed. During recent years it has become clear that a multidisciplinary approach is necessary toward the patient with TS. A number of clinical advances has been implemented, and these are reviewed. Our understanding of the genomic architecture of TS is advancing rapidly, and these latest developments are reviewed and discussed. Several candidate genes, genomic pathways and mechanisms, including an altered transcriptome and epigenome, are also presented.

Abstract
For the development and maintenance of neuron networks in the brain, epigenetic mechanisms are necessary, as indicated by recent findings. This includes some of the high-order brain processes, such as behavior and cognitive functions. Epigenetic mechanisms could influence the pathophysiology or etiology of some neuronal diseases, altering disease susceptibility and therapy responses. Recent studies support epigenetic dysfunctions in neurodegenerative and psychiatric conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). These dysfunctions in epigenetic mechanisms also play crucial roles in the transgenerational effects of the environment on the brain and subsequently in the inheritance of pathologies. The possible role of gonadal steroids in the etiology and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, has become the subject of a growing body of research over the last 20 years. Recent scientific findings suggest that epigenetic changes, driven by estrogen and androgens, play a vital role in brain functioning. Therefore, exploring the role of estrogen and androgen-based epigenetic changes in the brain is critical for the deeper understanding of AD. This review highlights the epigenetic modifications caused by these two gonadal steroids and the possible therapeutic strategies for AD.

Abstract
Steroid estrogens (SEs) as typical endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are widely detected in terrestrial environment, whilst the transport of SEs in groundwater remains unwell understood. Specifically, the effects of ubiquitous natural colloids on the SEs transport are unclear in subsurface environment, especially in aquifer systems. Here, the influence of inorganic colloids (i.e. silica and illite) and organic colloids, i.e. Humic acid (HA), on the transport of estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2) in saturated porous media was studied utilizing laboratory scale column experiments. Characterization on the colloids and porous aquifer material was conducted to provide a basis for interpretation of the experimental findings. Results showed that the transport of SEs was clearly affected by the natural colloids migrating through the saturated porous media. About 38.5% of E1 and 24.6% of E2 were retained in the column when colloids were absent in the system. When transporting with silica colloids, illite colloids, and HA colloids, the transport of E1 was enhanced by 15.64%, 11.17% and 25.60%, respectively; whilst the transport of E2 was improved by 19.56%, 23.06% and 36.40%, respectively. The SEs transport enhancement by colloids depended upon not only the mobility of the colloids but also their geochemical characteristics. The organic colloids showed 1.5-2.5 times greater ability on promoting the transport of SEs than the inorganic ones tested in this study. The proposed mechanisms of nature colloids facilitated transport of SEs including competing for adsorption sites on the sand surfaces by the colloids resulting mobilization of adsorbed SEs from solid matrix, and transport of colloids as carriers for SEs.

Abstract
Evidence increasingly indicated that lung cancer incidence in female individuals continue to rise, and women have a higher risk to develop adenocarcinoma than men. Male and female individuals differ in their innate and adaptive immune responses, and there are sex differences in response to the PD-1/PD-L1-dependent blocking immunotherapy. Whether the differential expression of PD-1 between genders affect the response to blocking treatment is currently unknown. In this study, we examined sex differences in serum sPD-1, mPD-1 expression on T cells, and sex hormone levels in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Our results revealed a higher level of sPD-1 and expression of PD-1 on CD4+T cell in female patients than in male patients; we identified that serum sPD-1 level and the expression of mPD-1 on T cells were significantly reduced in NSCLC; we also found that serum testosterone level increased in female patients compared with control subjects and that increased testosterone downregulated the expression of mPD-1 on T cell. These findings provide a better understanding of the differences in PD-1 expression between genders in NSCLC patients and the effect of sex hormones on PD-1 expression and supply evidence for early lung cancer diagnosis and responsiveness to immune checkpoint inhibitors.

Abstract
Background A previous study has shown similar factors in dyslipidemias (DL) and osteoporosis (OP). However, no cohort study has been reported on the association between DL and OP in the postmenopausal population in China. This study aims to provide epidemiological and pathophysiological evidence regarding the association between DL and bone mass and fracture risk. Methods This is a multicenter, prospective cohort study that will have approximately 1,100 representative participants enrolled from multiple hospitals or communities in China. They will be divided into two groups according to whether or not they are exposed to dyslipidemia and will be epidemiologically investigated. Each participant will be visited continuously once every year with a minimum follow-up of 3 years to track incidences of OP. Meanwhile, free bone density screening, questionnaires, and blood sample collection will also be completed during this period. Conclusion The current study is likely to provide greater insight into the relationship between lipid metabolism and bone metabolism in postmenopausal women. Furthermore, the research result maybe fed into public health strategies with regard to metabolic disease prevention.

Abstract
Signaling via extracellular regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and p90 ribosomal S6 kinase (RSK), a downstream effector, mediates numerous processes. For example, ERK1/2-RSK signaling is essential for estrogen homeostasis in the mammary gland and uterus to maintain physiological responsiveness. This review will focus on the coordination of ERK1/2-RSK2 and estrogen signaling through estrogen receptor alpha (ERα). The interrelationship and the feedback mechanisms between these pathways occurs at the level of transcription, translation, and posttranslational modification. Identifying how ERK1/2-RSK2 and estrogen signaling cooperate in homeostasis and disease may lead to novel therapeutic approaches in estrogen-dependent disorders.

Abstract
Low endogenous estrogen action causes several injuries. Medicinal plants, such as flaxseed and mulberry, contain substances that have been shown to be effective to the organism. The aim was to verify the effects of flaxseed and/or mulberry extracts on ovariectomized Wistar rats. The animals received supplements of extracts and estrogen or saline by gavage for 60 days and were weighed weekly. Vaginal wash, blood, pituitary, uterus, liver, and kidneys were collected. Phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity of the extracts, lipid profile, uric acid, liver enzymes, and pituitary weight were measured. Histomorphometric for uterine wall and histopathological analyses for liver and kidney were performed. Flaxseed and mulberry extracts showed great antioxidant activity and large amounts of phenolic compounds. The treatment with extracts had less weight gain, increased pituitary weight, the predominance of vaginal epithelial cells, and reduced TC, LDL-c and lipase activity, similar to estrogen animals. Estrogen or flaxseed + mulberry animals reduced VLDL-c and TAG. HDL-c, uric acid, and liver enzymes did not differ. Estrogen or extracts demonstrated trophic action on the endometrial thickness and have not shown hepatotoxicity or nephrotoxicity. We suggested the beneficial effects of flaxseed and mulberry extract as an alternative to reduce and/or prevent the negative effects caused by low estrogenic action.

Abstract
The increasingly broad and massive use of pharmaceuticals (human, veterinary) and personal care products in industrially developing nations makes their uncontrolled environmental and ecological impact a true concern. Focusing on Nigeria, this systematic literature search (databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane library and African Journals Online) aims to increase visibility to the issue. Among 275 articles identified, 7 were included in this systematic review. Studies indicated the presence of 11 personal care products (15.94 %) and 58 pharmaceutical products (84.06 %) in surface and ground water, leachates, runoffs, sludge, and sediments. The 42.86% (3/7) of reviewed studies reported 17 analgesics; 71.42 % (5/7) reported 16 antibiotics; 28.57 % (2/7) reported 5 lipid lowering drugs; 28.57% reported anti-malaria and fungal drugs; 14.29 % (1/7) reported estrogen drugs. Different studies report on sunscreen products, hormone, phytosterol, insect repellent, and β1 receptor. Gemfibrozil (<4-730 ng/L), Triclosan (55.1-297.7 ng/L), Triclocarban (35.6-232.4 ng/L), Trimethoprim (<1-388 ng/L) and Tramadol (<2-883 ng/L) had the highest range of concentrations. Findings confirm the need of i) legislation for environmental monitoring, including biota, ii) toxicological profiling of new market products, and iii) sensitization on appropriate use and disposal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products.

Abstract
The association between inflammation and metabolic disturbances leads to various female pathophysiological conditions. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), found in the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria, elicits an oxidative and inflammatory response that profoundly interferes with female reproductive health. We investigated the ameliorative action of melatonin on LPS-induced ovarian pathophysiology in golden hamsters, Mesocricetus auratus. Hamsters were administered with exogenous melatonin (5 mg/kg BW) and LPS (100 μg/kg BW) intraperitoneally for 7 days. LPS treatment impaired ovarian folliculogenesis as evident by histoarchitecture (elevated number of atretic follicles, reduced number of growing follicles and corpus luteum) and steroidogenesis (decreased aromatase/ERα, estradiol and progesterone). On the other hand, LPS administration also perturbed thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) homeostasis, ovarian melatonin receptor (MT-1) expression, antioxidant potential (SOD and catalase) and concomitantly elevated nitro-oxidative stress (decreased SOD, catalase and elevated CRP, TNFα and nitrate/nitrite level) and inflammatory load (NFĸB and COX-2) which culminated into ovarian follicular apoptosis (elevated caspase-3). LPS also disrupted metabolic homeostasis as indicated by hyperinsulinemia with a simultaneous decrease in ovarian IR/GLUT-4 and glucose content. Moreover, LPS treatment decreased expressions of key markers of ovarian physiology (SIRT-1, pErk1/2, PI3K and pAkt). Melatonin co-treatment with LPS improve these detrimental changes proposing melatonin as a potent therapeutic candidate against ovarian dysfunction induced by endotoxin.

Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the association between the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) polymorphism and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and obesity, as well as the coexistence of MetS and obesity, in peri- and post-menopausal Polish women. The study group consisted of 202 peri-menopausal and 202 post-menopausal women. ERα polymorphism: Xba I and Pvu II, MetS, BMI, and serum estrogen concentration were analyzed. MetS was found in 29% of the peri-menopausal women and in 21% of the post-menopausal women. BMI did not significantly differ between the peri- and post-menopausal women (≈42% were normal weight, ≈40% were overweight, and ≈18% were obese), (p = 0.82). Serum estrogen concentration in the peri-menopausal women was 91 ± 75 pg/mL, while that in the post-menopausal women was 17 ± 9. pg/mL, on average. Peri-menopausal women with AA and TT genotypes of the ERα polymorphism have a lower risk of obesity and MetS and the co-existence of obesity and MetS, whereas those women with the G or C allele have a higher risk of those health problems.

Abstract
Leu432Val (rs1056836) polymorphism of the CYP1B1 gene was examined in relationship with lipid profile in hypertensive Slovak women according to their menopausal status. The entire study sample comprised 255 women suffering from hypertension aged from 39 to 65 years who were recruited from different localities in the western, southern, and middle parts of Slovakia. The participants provided a saliva or blood sample for DNA genotyping and a blood sample for biochemical analysis. The Leu432Val genotypes demonstrated statistically significant associations with all monitored atherogenic indices – total cholesterol-to-HDL-Cholesterol (AI1), Non-HDL-Cholesterol (AI2), LDL-Cholesterol-to-HDL-Cholesterol (AI3), and the logarithm of the ratio of plasma concentration of triglycerides to HDL-cholesterol (AIP log) in hypertensive pre/perimenopausal women. The mean values were significantly lower in women carrying the Val/Val genotype. In early postmenopausal hypertensive women the Leu432Val genotypes were statistically significant and associated with LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and AI2. The mean values of LDL-C and AI2 were significantly lower in women carrying the Leu/Leu genotype. In conclusion, the Leu432Val polymorphism may be associated with the atherogenic indices and LDL-C in hypertensive women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Estrogen promotes glucose homeostasis, enhances insulin sensitivity, and maintains counterregulatory responses in recurrent hypoglycemia in women of reproductive age. Postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) might be more vulnerable to severe hypoglycemia (SH) events. However, the relationship between reproductive factors and SH occurrence in T2DM remains unelucidated. METHODS This study included data on 181,263 women with postmenopausal T2DM who participated in a national health screening program from January 1 to December 31, 2009, obtained using the Korean National Health Insurance System database. Outcome data were obtained until December 31, 2018. Associations between reproductive factors and SH incidence were assessed using Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS During the mean follow-up of 7.9 years, 11,279 (6.22%) postmenopausal women with T2DM experienced SH episodes. A longer reproductive life span (RLS) (≥40 years) was associated with a lower SH risk compared to a shorter RLS (<30 years) (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 0.74; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.69 to 0.80; P for trend <0.001) after multivariable adjustment. SH risk decreased with every 5-year increment of RLS (with <30 years as a reference [adjusted HR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.86 to 0.95; P=0.0001 for 30-34 years], [adjusted HR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.76 to 0.84; P<0.001 for 35-39 years], [adjusted HR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.68 to 0.81; P<0.001 for ≥40 years]). The use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was associated with a lower SH risk than HRT nonuse. CONCLUSION Extended exposure to endogenous ovarian hormone during lifetime may decrease the number of SH events in women with T2DM after menopause.

Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder with a complex pathogenesis that has a serious impact on the quality of life of patients. Abnormal visceral sensation, disordered gut motility, dysregulated immunity, and damaged intestinal barrier are thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of IBS. Female predisposition to IBS strongly suggests that sex hormones such as estrogen are involved in the development of IBS. In addition, dysbiosis of the intestinal flora is closely related to IBS. The interaction between estrogen and gut microbiota in IBS has not been fully elucidated. This review summarizes and evaluates the progress of related studies. Based on the new findings and shortcomings of current studies, we discuss the directions and issues that need to be resolved in future research.

Abstract
Background
The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea is higher in women after menopause. This is suggested to be a result of an altered sex hormone balance but has so far not been confirmed in a population-based study.
Objective
To investigate whether serum concentration of estrogens and progesterone are associated with the prevalence of sleep apnea symptoms in middle-aged women of the general population.
Methods
We analyzed data from 774 women (40–67 years) from 15 study centers in seven countries participating in the second follow-up of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (2010–2012). Multiple logistic regression models were fitted with self-reported symptoms of sleep apnea as outcomes and serum concentrations of various estrogens and progesterone as predictors. All analyses were adjusted for relevant covariates including age, BMI, education, study center, smoking habits, and reproductive age.
Results
Among all included women, a doubling of serum concentrations of estrone and progesterone was associated with 19% respectively 9% decreased odds of snoring. Among snorers, a doubling of the concentrations of 17β-estradiol, estrone and estrone 3-sulfate was associated with 18%, 23% and 17% decreased odds of breathing irregularly, and a doubling of the progesterone concentration was further associated with 12% decreased odds of waking up suddenly with a chocking sensation. Other evaluated associations were not statistically significant.
Conclusions
Middle-aged women with low serum estrogen and progesterone levels are more likely to snore and report symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.

Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and osteoporosis (OP) are progressive degenerative diseases caused by multiple factors, placing a huge burden on the world. Much evidence indicates that OP is a common complication in AD patients. In addition, there is also evidence to show that patients with OP have a higher risk of AD than those without OP. This suggests that the association between the two diseases may be due to a pathophysiological link rather than one disease causing the other. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have also proved their common pathogenesis. Based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, some classic and specific natural Chinese medicines are widely used to effectively treat AD and OP. Current evidence also shows that these treatments can ameliorate both brain damage and bone metabolism disorder and further alleviate AD complicated with OP. These valuable therapies might provide effective and safe alternatives to major pharmacological strategies.

Abstract
Turner syndrome (TS) is tightly associated with hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and ovarian dysgenesis, typically resulting in infertility in the great majority of patients. Therefore females with TS are usually treated with female sex steroids from 11-12 years of age until the normal age of natural menopause of around 53-54 years of age. Infertility is rated among females with TS as a distressing concern and a detractor from a good quality of life. Options for motherhood for females with TS has expanded during recent years. Originally, only adoption was an option, unless of course for the small minority of TS females that still has ovarian function and are capable of achieving pregnancy through normal means. Oocyte donation has become the mainstream option in many countries and seems to work well, especially if patients have been treated with optimal estrogen and gestagen for a prolonged time before the intervention. It comes with an increased risk of cardiovascular complications and TS oocyte donation pregnancies are viewed as high risk pregnancies necessitating increased vigilance. Oocyte cryopreservation of own oocytes is also becoming an option in a select group of TS and has special challenges. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is a promising new techniques that has been applied successfully in children with cancer. Currently, several trials are running around the world evaluating this techniques in TS. The genetics and genomics behind the ovarian dysgenesis seen in TS is not understood, but new studies have elucidated global changes in DNA methylation and RNA expression in blood from persons with TS and it is likely that similar changes are present in the ovaries. We still, however, need more thorough research to fully uncover the genetic background of ovarian failure in TS. Gene expression studies and methylation analysis from ovarian TS tissues still needs to be performed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidaemia is different among patients with hypertension in different populations. The serum lipid profiles among Hakka patients with hypertension in southern China are still unclear. METHODS 35 448 patients with hypertension were enrolled in this study from January 2016 to October 2020, and their serum lipids were analysed. RESULTS Low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) (29.9%) accounted for the highest proportion in dyslipidaemia, followed by high triglyceride (TG) (20.7%), high total cholesterol (TC) (14.0%) and high low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) (7.9%) in all subjects. The largest proportion of dyslipidaemia types was independent low HDL-C (12.7%). The proportion of low HDL-C was 15.5% in non-elderly men, 6.4% in non-elderly women, 16.7% in elderly men and 8.5% in elderly women, respectively. The largest proportion of dyslipidaemia types was independent high TG in non-elderly female patients (13.7%) and elderly patients (8.9%). The results showed that higher LDL-C, TC and TG levels in non-elderly patients than elderly patients. TG, TC and LDL-C levels decreasing with the increasing age, the differences were statistically significant. The levels of TG, TC, HDL-C and LDL-C in women were higher than in men among various age groups. Homocysteine level was increasing with increasing age. CONCLUSIONS Serum lipid levels varied in different groups according to age and sex in patients with hypertension. Dyslipidaemia is more common in non-elderly patients than elderly. TG, TC and LDL-C levels were higher in female patients than male.

Abstract
Sex differences are an important consideration when researching and establishing policies for nutrition and optimal health. For women's health, there are important physiologic, neurologic, and hormonal distinctions throughout the lifecycle that impact nutritional needs. Distinct from those for men, these nutritional needs must be translated into appropriate nutrition policy that aims to not only avoid overt nutritional deficiency, but also to promote health and minimize risk for chronic disease. Through a series of webinars, scientific experts discussed the advances in the understanding of the unique nutritional needs, challenges and opportunities of the various life stages for women across the life course and identified emerging nutritional interventions that may be beneficial for women. Nevertheless, there is concern that existing nutrition policy intended for women's health is falling short with examples of programs that are focused more on delivering calories than achieving optimal nutrition. To be locally effective, targeted nutrition needs to offer different proposals for different cultural, socio-economic, and geographic communities, and needs to be applicable at all stages of growth and development. There must be adequate access to nutritious foods, and the information to understand and implement proven nutritional opportunities. Experts provided recommendations for improvement of current entitlement programs that will address accessibility and other social and environmental issues to support women properly throughout the lifecycle.

Abstract
Computer simulations are widely used for the selection of conditions for the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers and can rapidly reduce the experimental cycle time and save labor and materials. In this paper, estrone molecularly imprinted polymers (E1-MIPs) are designed at the M062X/6-311+G(d,p) level with itaconic acid (IA) as the functional monomer. The imprinted molar ratio between E1 and IA was optimized, cross-linkers and solvents were screened, and the nature of interactions between E1 and IA was explored. The simulated results showed that pentaerythritol triacrylate was the best cross-linker. Meanwhile, when the imprinted molar ratio between E1 and IA was 1:4, the E1–IA complex had the largest amount of hydrogen bonds, the lowest binding energy, and the strongest stability. Using the simulation results as guidance, the E1-MIPs were prepared to modify the electrons of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor. The experimental studies showed that the E1-MIPs-QCM sensor had the highest adsorption capacity to E1 in comparison with their analogues, and the lowest detection value of the sensor was 16.00 μg/L. The computer simulations and experimental studies could provide guidance for synthesize novel E1-MIPs materials. It also could provide important references and directions for the application of E1-MIPs.

Abstract
Despite all precautionary actions and the possibility of using vaccinations to counteract infections caused by human papillomaviruses (HPVs), HPV-related cancers still account for approximately 5% of all carcinomas. Worldwide, many women are still excluded from adequate health care due to their social position and origin. Therefore, immense efforts in research and therapy are still required to counteract the challenges that this disease entails. The special thing about an HPV infection is that it is not only able to trick the immune system in a sophisticated way, but also, through genetic integration into the host genome, to use all the resources available to the host cells to complete the replication cycle of the virus without activating the alarm mechanisms of immune recognition and elimination. The mechanisms utilized by the virus are the metabolic, immune, and hormonal signaling pathways that it manipulates. Since the virus is dependent on replication enzymes of the host cells, it also intervenes in the cell cycle of the differentiating keratinocytes and shifts their terminal differentiation to the uppermost layers of the squamocolumnar transformation zone (TZ) of the cervix. The individual signaling pathways are closely related and equally important not only for the successful replication of the virus but also for the onset of cervical cancer. We will therefore analyze the effects of HPV infection on metabolic signaling, as well as changes in hormonal and immune signaling in the tumor and its microenvironment to understand how each level of signaling interacts to promote tumorigenesis of cervical cancer.

Abstract
Sex hormones are included in many physiological and pathological pathways. Estrogens belong to steroid hormones active in female sex. Estradiol (E2) is the strongest female sex hormone and, with its receptors, contributes to oncogenesis, cancer progression and response to treatment. In recent years, a role of immunosurveillance and suppression of immune response in malignancy has been well defined, forming the basis for cancer immunotherapy. The interplay of sex hormones with cancer immunity, as well as the response to immune checkpoint inhibitors, is of interest. In this review, we investigate the impact of sex hormones on natural immune response with respect to main active elements in anticancer immune surveillance: dendritic cells, macrophages, lymphocytes and checkpoint molecules. We describe the main sex-dependent tumors and the contribution of estrogen in their progression, response to treatment and especially modulation of anticancer immune response.

Abstract
Estrogen has long been known to possess immune-modulatory effects in diseases, and multiple pathological conditions show great sex disparities. However, the impact of estrogen in Neisseria meningitidis infection has not been determined. The present study aimed to investigate the role of estrogen in N. meningitidis infection and the molecular mechanism. We selected 35 N. meningitidis isolates representing different clonal complexes (cc), serogroups, and isolation sources to infect the HBMEC cell line. Results showed that the expression of estrogen receptor (ER) β in N. meningitidis-infected cells was downregulated compared with that in normal cells. The expression of ERβ induced by invasive isolates was lower than that in carriers. Serogroup C isolates induced the lowest expression of ERβ compared with serogroup A and B isolates. We used four cc4821 N. meningitidis isolates to infect two kinds of host cells (human brain microvascular endothelial cells and meningeal epithelial cells). The results showed that 17 β-estradiol (E2) could inhibit the release of inflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α after N. meningitidis infection via TLR4. E2 could inhibit the activation of the p38-MAPK signal pathway induced by N. meningitidis infection through binding to ERβ, and significantly inhibit the release of inflammatory factors in N. meningitidis-infected host cells. This study demonstrated that estrogen plays a protective role in N. meningitidis infection. ERβ is potentially associated with the release of inflammatory cytokines in N. meningitidis infection, which sheds light on a possible therapeutic strategy for the treatment of invasive diseases caused by N. meningitidis.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes encoding estrogen receptors (ESR1 and ESR2, respectively) and delayed tooth emergence (DTE). This cross-sectional study was composed of biological unrelated children of both sexes, age ranging from 11 to 13 years old. DTE was defined when the successor primary tooth was still present in the oral cavity after its exfoliation time or the absence of the permanent tooth emergence into the oral cavity. Children were diagnosed with DTE when they had at least one delayed permanent tooth, according to age of exfoliation of each tooth proposed by The American Dental Association. Genomic DNA from saliva was used to evaluate the SNPs in ESR1 (rs9340799 and rs2234693) and ESR2 (rs1256049 and rs4986938) using Real-Time PCR. Chi-square or Fisher exact tests and Logistic Regression adjusted by age and gender were performed. SNP-SNP interaction was accessed by multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) analysis also adjusted by gender and age. The established alpha of this study was 5%. Among 537 included children, 296 (55%) were in the "DTE" group and the 241 (45%) were in the "Control" group. Age and gender were not statistically different among the groups (p>0.05). Genotype distribution of the SNPs rs9340799, rs2234693, rs1256049 and rs4986938 were not associated with DTE (p> 0.05). The models elected by MDR were not statistically significant either. Conclusions: The studied SNPs in ESR1 and ESR2 were not associated with permanent DTE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Soya saponin (SS), an active compound in soybean meals, has been widely studied in the medical field. However, it was considered as an anti-nutritional factor in poultry diets. The objective of this experiment was to measure the effects of dietary SS using three dietary treatments on egg-laying performance and immune function of laying hens. Birds were fed a low soybean meal basal diet (CON), a low-SS diet (50 SS) containing 50 mg/kg SS, or a high-SS diet (500 SS) containing 500 mg/kg SS for 10 weeks. At the end of the 5th and 10th week of the trial, samples were collected for analysis. RESULTS Results showed that with 50 mg/kg SS supplementation, the egg production rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and eggshell quality tended to be improved. Serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Interleukin-4 (IL-4) levels were also elevated as well as the peripheral blood LPS stimulation index, the proportion of B lymphocytes, and antibody titer of bovine serum albumin (BSA). We also found that mRNA levels of follicle stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) in ovarian, nuclear transcription factor kappa B (NF-κB), Transforming growth factor (TGF-β) and interferon γ (IFN-γ) in spleen were up-regulated at the end of the trial. Additionally, dietary 50 mg/kg SS improved the ileal flora via up-regulating the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Romboutsia and Lactobacillus delbrueckii. Although the immune related indicators were improved with 500 mg/kg SS supplemented, it seemed to have a negative influence on the laying-performance. Specifically, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and the ratio of IFN-γ to IL-4 were increased in the 500 SS group at the end of the trial. The mRNA levels of gonadotropin releasing hormone 1 (GnRH1) in Hypothalamus, the estrogen related receptor (ERR) in ovaries were downregulated as well as the egg production rate during the trial with 500 mg/kg SS supplemented. CONCLUSIONS The egg production performance was improved by dietary supplemented with 50 mg/kg SS via increasing ovarian FSHR transcription level and serum estrogen level. A beneficial shift in intestinal microflora was recorded, and the immune function of laying hens was also improved with 50 mg/kg SS supplementation. Surprisingly, the long-term supplementation of 500 mg/kg SS exerted a negative impact on the laying performance and physiological functions of the liver of laying hens.

Abstract
The release of pharmaceuticals into the environment induces adverse effects on the metabolism of humans and other living species, calling for advanced remediation methods. Conventional removal methods are often non-selective and cause secondary contamination. These issues may be partly solved by the use of recently-developped adsorbents such as molecularly imprinted polymers. Here we review the synthesis and application of molecularly imprinted polymers for removing pharmaceuticals in water. Molecularly imprinted polymers are synthesized via several multiple-step polymerization methods. Molecularly imprinted polymers are potent adsorbents at the laboratory scale, yet their efficiency is limited by template leakage and polymer quality. Adsorption performance of multi-templated molecularly imprinted polymers depends on the design of wastewater treatment plants, pharmaceutical consumption patterns and the population serviced by these wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies showed inverse relationship between hypercholesterolemia and the risk of gastric cancer, especially among male. However evidence among female is inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the relationship between cholesterol level and the risk of gastric cancer among female according to menopausal status. METHODS We analyzed the data from a population-based prospective cohort of female ≥ 30 years old who underwent cancer screening and general health screening provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Corporation in 2009. Under quartile stratification of the level of cholesterol components, we calculated the hazard ratio (HR) for gastric cancer incidence until 2018 for each level group according to the menopausal status at 2009. RESULTS Among total 2,722,614 individuals, 17,649 gastric cancer cases developed after mean 8.26 years of follow-up (premenopausal 3746/1180666; postmenopausal 13,903/1541948). Total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) showed inverse relationship with the risk of gastric cancer among postmenopausal women (adjusted HR (95% confidence interval) for the highest quartile vs. lowest quartile and p-for-trend: 0.88 (0.84-0.92) and < 0.001 for total cholesterol; 0.89 (0.85-0.92) and < 0.001 for HDL-C; 0.92 (0.89-0.97) and 0.001 for LDL-C), whereas none showed statistically significant risk relationship among premenopausal women. Triglyceride was not independently related with gastric cancer risk among both pre- and postmenopausal women. CONCLUSIONS Cholesterol levels, including total cholesterol, HDL-C, and LDL-C, are inversely related with the risk of gastric cancer among postmenopausal women, but not among premenopausal women.

Abstract
Mammals receive body energy information to maintain energy homeostasis. Ghrelin, insulin, leptin and vagal afferents transmit the status of fasting, blood glucose, body fat, and food intake, respectively. Estrogen also inhibits feeding behavior and lipogenesis, but increases body fat mass. However, how blood triglyceride levels are monitored and the physiological roles of estrogen from the perspective of lipid homeostasis remain unsettled. Here, we show that stomach secretes estrogen in response to the blood triglyceride levels. Estrogen-secreting gastric parietal cells predominantly use fatty acids as an energy source. Blood estrogen levels increase as blood triglyceride levels rise in a stomach-dependent manner. Estrogen levels in stomach tissues increase as blood triglyceride levels rise, and isolated gastric gland epithelium produces estrogen in a fatty acid-dependent manner. We therefore propose that stomach monitors and controls blood triglyceride levels using estrogen, which inhibits feeding behavior and lipogenesis, and promotes triglyceride uptake by adipocytes.
