Copper peroxide loaded gelatin/oxide dextran hydrogel with temperature and pH responsiveness for antibacterial and wound healing activity

Bacterial infection and tissue hypoxia always prevent wound healing, so multifunctional platforms with antimicrobial and oxygen-supplying functions were developed. However, they face many difficulties such as complex preparation and low oxygen release. To address this challenge, a copper peroxide loaded gelatin/oxide dextran hydrogel (CGO) was prepared. Surprisingly, CGO hydrogel as a wound dressing not only had good biocompatibility, injectivity, and mechanical properties, but also exhibited mild photothermal properties, temperature responsiveness, and pH responsiveness. After being applied to wounds infected with bacteria, CGO hydrogel released copper peroxide under near-infrared laser irradiation, which produced copper ions and hydrogen peroxide, combined with PTT to kill bacteria. After the bacteria were cleared from the wound and the pH of the wound was changed to be acidic, CGO hydrogel released copper peroxide via pH response. Copper ions and oxygen produced from copper peroxide accelerated wound healing by promoting angiogenesis. The multi-responsive and multi-mode treatment platform provided a potential strategy for treating bacteria-infected wounds.

Multifunctional Umbrella: In Situ Interface Film Forming on the High-Voltage LiCoO2 Cathode by a Tiny Amount of Nanoporous Polymer Additives for High-Energy-Density Li-Ion Batteries

The LiCoO2 (LCO) cathode is foreseen for extensive commercial applications owing to its high specific capacity and stability. Therefore, there is considerable interest in further enhancing its specific capacity by increasing the charging voltage. However, single-crystal LCO suffers from a significant capacity degradation when charged to 4.5 V due to the irreversible phase transition and unstable structure. Herein, an ultra-small amount (0.5% wt. in the electrode) of multi-functional PIM-1 (a polymer with intrinsic microporosity) additive is utilized to prepare a kind of binder-free electrode. PIM-1 modulates the solvation structure of LiPF6 due to its unique structure, which helps to form a stable, robust, and inorganic-rich cathod-eelectrolyte interphase (CEI) film on the surface of LCO at a high voltage of 4.5 V. This reduces the irreversible phase transition of LCO, thereby enhancing the cyclic stability and improving the rate performance, providing new perspectives for the electrodes fabrication and improving LCO-based high-energy-density cathodes.

Alginate based hemostatic materials for bleeding management: A review

Severe bleeding has caused significant financial losses as well as a major risk to the lives and health of military and civilian populations. Under some situations, the natural coagulation mechanism of the body is unable to achieve fast hemostasis without the use of hemostatic drugs. Thus, the development of hemostatic materials and techniques is essential. Improving the quality of life and survival rate of patients and minimizing bodily damage requires fast, efficient hemostasis and prevention of bleeding. Alginate is regarded as an outstanding hemostatic polymer because of its non-immunogenicity, biodegradability, good biocompatibility, simple gelation, non-toxicity, and easy availability. This review summarizes the basics of hemostasis and emphasizes the recent developments regarding alginate-based hemostatic systems. Structural modifications and mixing with other materials have widely been used for the improvement of hemostatic characteristics of alginate and for making multifunctional medical devices that not only prevent uncontrolled bleeding but also have antibacterial characteristics, drug delivery abilities, and curing effects. This review is hoped to prepare critical insights into alginate modifications for better hemostatic properties.

A poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) self-pumping Janus dressing with bidirectional biofluid transport for diabetic wound healing via anti-bacteria and pro-angiogenesis

Diabetic wound healing poses a substantial challenge owing to bacterial infections, insufficient angiogenesis, and excessive exudates. Currently, most of the clinical dressings used for diabetic wounds are still conventional dressings such as gauze. In this study, a three-layer Janus dressing was developed via continuous electrostatic spinning. The top-layer was composed of polylactic acid-glycolic acid and hydroxyapatite doped with silver ions and silicate. The hydrophobic top-layer prevented the adhesion of foreign bacteria. The mid-layer was composed of polyethylene glycol, polylactic acid-glycolic acid and hydroxyapatite doped with silver ions and silicate facilitated exudate absorption and bioactive ion release. The modified sub-layer containing polylactic acid-glycolic acid, hydroxyapatite doped with silver ions and silicate and sodium alginate microspheres enabled both the transport of wound exudate from the wound bed to dressing and the backflow of bioactive silver ions and silicate to the wound bed, thereby reducing infection and stimulating angiogenesis. Through in vivo and in vivo experiments, the Janus dressing showed to have antimicrobial, angiogenic, and exudate-control properties that accelerate healing in diabetic wounds. As a novel dressing, the multifunctional, self-pumping Janus wound dressing with bi-directional biofluidic transport offers a new approach to diabetic wound healing.

A Powerful Strategy for Carbon Reduction: Recyclable Mono-Material Polyethylene Functional Film

Given the abundant plastics produced globally, and the negative environmental impacts of disposable plastic products throughout their life cycle, there has been significant attention drawn by the general public and governments worldwide. Mono-material multilayer packaging is a potent strategy to address the challenge of carbon emissions as it offers specific functionalities (such as strength and barrier properties) through its layers and facilitates recycling. In this study, a five-layer co-extruded polyethylene composite film LLDPE/mPE/PVA/mPE/LLDPE was taken as a model to investigate its mechanical properties and barrier properties after four recycling cycles. The result revealed that the longitudinal tensile strength and transvers tensile were, respectively, dropped from 29.66 MPa and 24.9 MPa to 21.972 MPa and 19.222 MPa after the recycling; it is shown that the film still has good mechanical properties after the recycling cycle. However, a noticeable decline in the barrier properties was observed after the second recycling. In contrast to traditional plastics, a mono-material film with a 10 wt.% circulating mass could reduce CO2 emissions by 3692.25 kg for every 1.0 ton of plastic products after four recycling cycles.

Supported Ionic Liquid-Phase Materials (SILP) as a Multifunctional Group of Highly Stable Modifiers and Hardeners for Carbon and Flax Epoxy Composites

This paper introduces a novel approach to enhance epoxy resin formulations by using SILP materials as multifunctional hardeners and fillers in composite structures reinforced with carbon and flax fibers. This study explores the integration of ionic liquids (ILs) onto a silica support structure, presenting various permutations involving silica selection, ionic liquid choice, and concentration. The focus of this study was to elucidate the influence of SILP on resin curing ability and the mechanical properties of the resulting composites. Detailed research was conducted, including Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET) for SILP materials and curing characterization for epoxy resin formulations with different SILP materials. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the obtained composites were determined by Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis (SEM) (the force at break, the maximum elongation at break, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity). Through SILP incorporation, the mechanical properties of composites, including the modulus of elasticity and tensile strength, are substantially improved, a phenomenon akin to traditional filler effects. The findings highlight SILP materials as prospective candidates for concurrent hardening and filling roles within composites (through a single-step procedure, with prolonged storage stability and controlled processing conditions), particularly pertinent as the composite industry veers toward epoxy bioresins necessitating liquefaction via temperature application.

Uni-directional release of ibuprofen from an asymmetric fibrous membrane enables effective peritendinous anti-adhesion

Drug-loaded porous membranes have been deemed to be effective physicochemical barriers to separate postoperative adhesion-prone tissues in tendon healing. However, cell viability and subsequent tissue regeneration might be severely interfered with the unrestricted release and the locally excessive concentration of anti-inflammatory drugs. Herein, we report a double-layered membrane with sustained and uni-directional drug delivery features to prevent peritendinous adhesion without hampering the healing outcome. A vortex-assisted electrospinning system in combination with ibuprofen (IBU)-in-water emulsion was utilized to fabricate IBU-loaded poly-ʟ-lactic-acid (PLLA) fiber bundle membrane (PFB-IBU) as the anti-adhesion layer. The resultant highly porous structure, oleophilic and hydrophobic nature of PLLA fibers enabled in situ loading of IBU with a concentration gradient across the membrane thickness. Aligned collagen nanofibers were further deposited at the low IBU concentration side of the membrane for regulating cell growth and achieving uni-directional release of IBU. Drug release kinetics showed that the release amount of IBU from the high concentration side reached 79.32% at 14 d, while it was only 0.35% at the collagen side. Therefore, fibroblast proliferation at the high concentration side was successfully inhibited without affecting the oriented growth of tendon-derived stem cells at the other side. In vivo evaluation of the rat Achilles adhesion model confirmed the successful peritendinous anti-adhesion of our double-layered membrane, in that the macrophage recruitment, the inflammatory factor secretion and the deposition of pathological adhesion markers such as α-SMA and COL-III were all inhibited, which greatly improved the peritendinous fibrosis and restored the motor function of tendon.

Synthesis, characterization and stability of crosslinked chitosan-maltodextrin pH-sensitive nanogels

Polysaccharide-based nanogels offer a wide range of chemical compositions and are of great interest due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and their ability to display pH, temperature, or enzymatic response. In this work, we synthesized monodisperse and tunable pH-sensitive nanogels by crosslinking, through reductive amination, chitosan and partially oxidized maltodextrins, by keeping the concentration of chitosan close to its overlap concentration, i.e. in the dilute and semi-dilute regime. The chitosan/maltodextrin nanogels presented sizes ranging from 63 ± 9 to 279 ± 16 nm, showed quasi-spherical and cauliflower-like morphology, reached a ζ-potential of +36 ± 2 mV and maintained a colloidal stability for up to 7 weeks. It was found that the size and surface charge of nanogels depended both on the oxidation degree of maltodextrins and chitosan concentration, as well as on its degree of acetylation and protonation, the latter tuned by pH. The pH-responsiveness of the nanogels was evidenced by an increased size, owed to swelling, and ζ-potential when pH was lowered. Finally, maltodextrin-chitosan biocompatible nanogels were assessed by cell viability assay performed using the HEK293T cell line.

Exploring industrial lignocellulosic waste: Sources, types, and potential as high-value molecules

Lignocellulosic biomass has a promising role in a circular bioeconomy and may be used to produce valuable molecules for green chemistry. Lignocellulosic biomass, such as food waste, agricultural waste, wood, paper or cardboard, corresponded to 15.7% of all waste produced in Europe in 2020, and has a high potential as a secondary raw material for industrial processes. This review first presents industrial lignocellulosic waste sources, in terms of their composition, quantities and types of lignocellulosic residues. Secondly, the possible high added-value chemicals obtained from transformation of lignocellulosic waste are detailed, as well as their potential for applications in the food industry, biomedical, energy or chemistry sectors, including as sources of polyphenols, enzymes, bioplastic precursors or biofuels. In a third part, various available transformation treatments, such as physical treatments with ultrasound or heat, chemical treatments with acids or bases, and biological treatments with enzymes or microorganisms, are presented. The last part discusses the perspectives of the use of lignocellulosic waste and the fact that decreasing the cost of transformation is one of the major issues for improving the use of lignocellulosic biomass in a circular economy and green chemistry approach, since it is currently often more expensive than petroleum-based counterparts.

Stimuli-responsive biomaterials: smart avenue toward 4D bioprinting

3D bioprinting is an advanced technology combining cells and bioactive molecules within a single bioscaffold; however, this scaffold cannot change, modify or grow in response to a dynamic implemented environment. Lately, a new era of smart polymers and hydrogels has emerged, which can add another dimension, e.g., time to 3D bioprinting, to address some of the current approaches' limitations. This concept is indicated as 4D bioprinting. This approach may assist in fabricating tissue-like structures with a configuration and function that mimic the natural tissue. These scaffolds can change and reform as the tissue are transformed with the potential of specific drug or biomolecules released for various biomedical applications, such as biosensing, wound healing, soft robotics, drug delivery, and tissue engineering, though 4D bioprinting is still in its early stages and more works are required to advance it. In this review article, the critical challenge in the field of 4D bioprinting and transformations from 3D bioprinting to 4D phases is reviewed. Also, the mechanistic aspects from the chemistry and material science point of view are discussed too.

Synthesis of biopolymer blends nanocomposites embedded with mono-(Ag, Fe) and bi-(Ag-Fe) metallic nanoparticles using an eco-friendly approach for antimicrobial activities

Plant-mediated solution casting is used to develop eco-friendly polymer blend nanocomposites from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) doped with Silver (Ag), Ferrous (Fe) monometallic and Silver-Ferrous (Ag-Fe) bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs). These nanocomposites were studied to understand their electromagnetic interface (EMI) shielding efficiency and antimicrobial activities, besides evaluating their physical and chemical properties. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) characterization techniques were used to examine the interactions between the polymers, the presence of silver and ferrous particles in the composites, the crystallinity shift, the surface morphology, the shape and size of the nanoparticles and the distribution of the nanoparticles in the composites. The FTIR spectra showed the interactions among the components of the composites. According to XRD spectra, the incorporation of nanoparticles into the PVA polymer significantly reduced the crystalline character of the polymer from 0.38 to 0.24 for the composition consisting of silver and iron nanoparticles in equal proportion. The results from SEM, EDX and XRD corroborate the presence of nanoparticle forms. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tests reveal that the thermal stability of bimetallic composites is greater than that of monometallic composites. The tensile properties showed that the addition of nanoparticles to the PVA/PVP polymer matrix increased its mechanical strength from 59.3 MPa to 85.5 MPa. We examined its efficacy against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans as microorganisms. Good antibacterial and antifungal activity was observed. The bimetallic composites demonstrated greater activity than monometallic composites against these bacterial and fungal species. All bimetallic nanocomposites have shown enhanced, loss due to reflection, loss due to absorption, and the total EMI shielding efficiency at 8 GHz (X-band) and 16 GHz (Ku-band) frequency. All these results ratify, that these newly developed bio nanocomposites are most suitable in many applications, in EMI shielding, nanotechnology, and medical fields.

MoO3-X nanodots coated suture for combating surgical site infection via antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties

Surgical site infection (SSI) significantly affects patient recovery time, health outcomes and quality of life which is closely associated with the use of implants or mesh. Sutures are the most frequently used implants that play a significant role in the development of SSI. Studies have demonstrated that the administration of effective bactericidal and anti-inflammatory treatments can significantly decrease the incidence of SSI. To address this concern, a versatile suture was engineered by coating MoO3-X nanodots in this study. The incorporation of MoO3-X nanodots endowed the suture with desirable antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that were evaluated in in vitro and in vivo experiments. The results showed its remarkable ability to facilitate wound healing and prevent SSI through its dual action of combating bacterial infection and reducing inflammation. These findings highlight the promising potential of this multifunctional surgical suture as a versatile tool to promote better outcomes in surgical procedures.

Progress of Polymer Electrolytes Worked in Solid-State Lithium Batteries for Wide-Temperature Application

Solid-state Li-ion batteries have emerged as the most promising next-generation energy storage systems, offering theoretical advantages such as superior safety and higher energy density. However, polymer-based solid-state Li-ion batteries face challenges across wide temperature ranges. The primary issue lies in the fact that most polymer electrolytes exhibit relatively low ionic conductivity at or below room temperature. This sensitivity to temperature variations poses challenges in operating solid-state lithium batteries at sub-zero temperatures. Moreover, elevated working temperatures lead to polymer shrinkage and deformation, ultimately resulting in battery failure. To address this challenge of polymer-based solid-state batteries, this review presents an overview of various promising polymer electrolyte systems. The review provides insights into the temperature-dependent physical and electrochemical properties of polymers, aiming to expand the temperature range of operation. The review also further summarizes modification strategies for polymer electrolytes suited to diverse temperatures. The final section summarizes the performance of various polymer-based solid-state batteries at different temperatures. Valuable insights and potential future research directions for designing wide-temperature polymer electrolytes are presented based on the differences in battery performance. This information is intended to inspire practical applications of wide-temperature polymer-based solid-state batteries.

Exploring the Electrochemical Performance of Molybdenum Disulfide Nanoparticles Entrenched in Miscible Poly(methyl methacrylate)-Poly(lactic acid) Blends as Freestanding Electrodes for Supercapacitors

The focus of the study in this article is analyzing the electrochemical properties of molybdenum disulfide on miscible poly(methyl methacrylate)-poly(lactic acid) blends for supercapacitors. The interaction between molybdenum disulfide and miscible poly(methyl methacrylate)-poly(lactic acid) blends, affinity toward water, surface morphology, and mechanical properties are inspected by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, water contact angle, scanning electron microscopy, and universal testing machine, respectively. Among the developed membranes, 0.75 wt% of molybdenum disulfide on poly(methyl methacrylate)-poly(lactic acid) shows better electrochemical performances. It exhibits a maximum specific capacitance of 255.5 F g-1 at a current density of 1.00 mA g-1, maximum energy density of 22.7 Wh kg-1, and maximum power density of 360 W kg-1. A cycle study reveals 92% capacitance retention after 2500 cycles. The designed supercapacitor device shows a maximum specific capacitance of 1240 μF g-1 at a current density of 0.5 μA g-1, maximum energy density of 43 μWh kg-1, and maximum power density of 700 μW kg-1. Flexible membranes of molybdenum disulfide are expected to be a potent combination for supercapacitor applications.

Tunable Dual Self-Healing Composite Coatings with Self-Assembled Structures Regulated by Janus Nanoparticles

The durability of concrete structures can be enhanced in a convenient and permanent manner through the surface protection of cementitious materials with composite polymer coatings. However, polymer coatings are susceptible to various mechanical and physical deterioration in complex and variable environments. In this paper, the theory of polymer microstructure regulation was employed to improve the sustainability of the protective performance of composite coatings. The self-assembled core-shell structure regulated by amphiphilic Janus nanoparticles is employed to modify the tunable polystyrene acrylate-polysiloxane self-healing coatings. The results demonstrate that the adhesion strength of the prepared self-assembled coating reached 3.7 MPa, which is sufficient to resist the damage to the microstructure of cementitious materials caused by physical erosion, seepage, and ionic corrosion. The self-healing coating, regulated by Janus particles, exhibited a residual creep of only 57.03% and a maximum loss angle tangent of 0.381. Furthermore, the material exhibited a superior shape memory function due to the presence of strong hydrogen bonding. The regulated self-healing coating repaired the polymer structural damage under mechanical and thermal deformation by bridging and filling effects. The coating demonstrated a tensile strength recovery of up to 71.23% in a wetted state, accompanied by a rapid restoration of its electrochemical properties and corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the self-healing emulsion penetrates the substrate defects and forms numerous polymer crystalline particles that effectively fill the microcracks.

Magnetite-Incorporated 1D Carbon Nanostructure Hybrids for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

The increasing reliance on electronic technologies has elevated the urgency of effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. This review explores the development and potential of magnetite-incorporated one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanostructure hybrids, focusing on their unique properties and synthesis methods. By combining magnetite's magnetic properties with the electrical conductivity and mechanical strength of carbon nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon fibers (CFs), these hybrids offer superior EMI shielding performance. Various synthesis techniques, including solvothermal synthesis, in situ growth, and electrostatic self-assembly, are discussed in detail, highlighting their impact on the structure and properties of the resulting composites. This review also addresses the challenges in achieving homogeneous dispersion of nanofillers and the environmental and economic considerations of large-scale production. The hybrid materials' multifunctionality, including enhanced mechanical strength, thermal stability, and environmental resistance, underscores their suitability for advanced applications in aerospace, electronics, and environmental protection. Future research directions focus on optimizing synthesis processes and exploring new hybrid configurations to further improve electromagnetic properties and practical applicability.

Improving the fire-retardant performance of industrial reactive coatings for steel building structures

The main aim of this study was to determine key factors that regulate fire-retardant effectiveness of intumescent coatings comprising of ammonium polyphosphate, melamine, pentaerythritol, polymer binder. Fulfillment of the research objectives resulted in the development of a coating with R120 fire resistance. The expected service life of the coating is at least 15 years when applied at Z2 type of environmental conditions (indoor use). It was established that in order to provide fire resistance of around R30 it is advisable to use the styrene-acrylic polymers as binders for both water-based and organic-based intumescent systems. The ratio of target components ammonium polyphosphate/melamine/pentaerythritol in such systems should be close to 2/1/1. The coating thickness is to be 0.4-0.5 mm. To achieve higher fire resistance (R60 or more) the coating should include a vinyl acetate derivative as a binder (copolymers with ethylene or vinylversatate). Target components ratio in this case is to be close to 3.5/1/1.5, while the coating thickness should be kept at 1.6-1.8 mm. If the required class of fire resistance is above R120, coating thickness is usually to be kept above 3.5 mm. In order to achieve higher fire resistance, it is advisable to use nano-clay additives and reinforcing fibers in intumescent compositions. The obtained results were used in the development of intumescent coating, which is produced industrially and provides over R120 fire resistance of steel, which was confirmed in standardized full-scale fire tests.

Development of an extended action fostemsavir lipid nanoparticle

An extended action fostemsavir (FTR) lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulation prevents human immunodeficiency virus type one (HIV-1) infection. This FTR formulation establishes a drug depot in monocyte-derived macrophages that extend the drug's plasma residence time. The LNP's physicochemical properties improve FTR's antiretroviral activities, which are linked to the drug's ability to withstand fluid flow forces and levels of drug cellular internalization. Each is, in measure, dependent on PEGylated lipid composition and flow rate ratios affecting the size, polydispersity, shape, zeta potential, stability, biodistribution, and antiretroviral efficacy. The FTR LNP physicochemical properties enable the drug-particle's extended actions.

Assessment of chemical degradation of epoxy resin binder used in the service of the Qin terracotta warriors

Since the Qin terracotta warriors were unearthed, polyamide 650 cross-linked E-44 epoxy resin binder has been employed to bond and restore them. In this paper, the chemical aging of the binders service in indoor natural environment during the past 30 years in the terracotta warriors was studied by means of infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicated that the binders did not emerge the characteristic peak of carbonyl stretching vibration at 1700 cm-1 in the IR spectra of all determined binders, and their thermal decomposition curves did not emerge any abnormal changes, and the thermal decomposition mainly occurred above 300 °C. There are evident ceramic grains attached to the surface of the binders being peeled off for sampling. These results that the binders service in the Qin terracotta warriors did not exhibit an observable chemical aging and still has strong adhesion. Generally, discrepancies were observed between natural aging and accelerated artificial aging due to the ineffectiveness of the latter to reproduce the effects of complex weather conditions. Compared to artificially accelerated aging, the evaluation results in a long-term natural aging of the binder which is used for restoration of the life-size Qin terracotta warriors, providing in the present investigation, are more reliable in terms of predicting the safety of restored terracotta warriors.

Influence of Hardwood Lignin Blending on the Electrical and Mechanical Properties of Cellulose Based Carbon Fibers

Carbon fibers (CFs) are fabricated by blending hardwood kraft lignin (HKL) and cellulose. Various compositions of HKL and cellulose in blended solutions are air-gap spun in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIM OAc), resulting in the production of virtually bead-free quality fibers. The synthesized HKL-cellulose fibers are thermostabilized and carbonized to achieve CFs, and consequently their electrical and mechanical properties are evaluated. Remarkably, fibers with the highest lignin content (65%) exhibited an electrical conductivity of approximately 42 S/cm, surpassing that of cellulose (approximately 15 S/cm). Moreover, the same fibers demonstrated significantly improved tensile strength (∼312 MPa), showcasing a 5-fold increase compared to pure cellulose while maintaining lower stiffness. Comprehensive analyses, including Auger electron spectroscopy and wide-angle X-ray scattering, show a heterogeneous skin-core morphology in the fibers revealing a higher degree of preferred orientation of carbon components in the skin compared to the core. The incorporation of lignin in CFs leads to increased graphitization, enhanced tensile strength, and a unique skin-core structure, where the skin's graphitized cellulose and lignin contribute stiffness, while the predominantly lignin-rich core enhances carbon content, electrical conductivity, and strength.

Advancements in Flexible Nanogenerators: Polyvinylidene Fluoride-Based Nanofiber Utilizing Electrospinning

With the gradual miniaturization of electronic devices and the increasing interest in wearable devices, flexible microelectronics is being actively studied. Owing to the limitations of existing battery systems corresponding to miniaturization, there is a need for flexible alternative power sources. Accordingly, energy harvesting from surrounding environmental systems using fluorinated polymers with piezoelectric properties has received significant attention. Among them, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and PVDF co-polymers have been researched as representative organo-piezoelectric materials because of their excellent piezoelectric properties, mechanical flexibility, thermal stability, and light weight. Electrospinning is an effective method for fabricating nanofibrous meshes with superior surface-to-volume ratios from polymer solutions. During electrospinning, the polymer solution is subjected to mechanical stretching and in situ poling, corresponding to an external strong electric field. Consequently, the fraction of the piezoelectric β-phase in PVDF can be improved by the electrospinning process, and enhanced harvesting output can be realized. An overview of electrospun piezoelectric fibrous meshes composed of PVDF or PVDF co-polymers to be utilized is presented, and the recent progress in enhancement methods for harvesting output, such as fiber alignment, doping with various nanofillers, and coaxial fibers, is discussed. Additionally, other applications of these meshes as sensors are reviewed.

A Two-Layer Graphene Nonwoven Fabric for Effective Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Rapid advancements and proliferation of electronic devices in the past decades have significantly intensified electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues, driving the demand for more effective shielding materials. Herein, we introduce a novel two-layer graphene nonwoven fabric (2-gNWF) that shows excellent EMI shielding properties. The 2-gNWF fabric comprises a porous fibrous upper layer and a dense conductive film-like lower layer, specifically designed to enhance EMI shielding through the combined mechanisms of reflection, multiple internal reflections, and absorption of electromagnetic waves. The 2-gNWF exhibits a remarkable EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 80 dB while maintaining an impressively low density of 0.039 g/cm3, surpassing the performance of many existing graphene-based materials. The excellent EMI shielding performance of 2-gNWF is attributed to the multiple interactions of incident electromagnetic waves with its highly conductive network and porous structure, leading to efficient energy dissipation. The combination of high EMI SE and low density makes 2-gNWF ideal for applications that require lightweight yet effective shielding properties, demonstrating the significant potential for advanced EMI shielding applications.

A General Strategy for Sustainable 3D Printing Based on A Multifunctional Photoinitiator

A multifunctional photoinitiator is presented, offering precise control over light-induced polymerization initiation at 450 nm and material degradation at 365 nm. This is accomplished by covalently linking photoactive bis(acyl)phosphane oxide and photocleavable o-nitrobenzyl ether moieties onto the surface of γ-cyclodextrin. Upon degradation, the resulting linear polymers can be easily re-dissolved in their corresponding monomer and re-cured, exhibiting superior mechanical properties compared to the pristine material. Moreover, this photoinitiator enables the successful 3D printing of intricate and precise structures, representing a promising general strategy for developing recyclable photoresins for 3D printing applications.

Electrophysical Characteristics of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Composites Filled with Magnetite and Carbon Fiber Fillers

With the rapid development of wireless communication technologies and the miniaturization trend in the electronics industry, the reduction of electromagnetic interference has become an important issue. To solve this problem, a lot of attention has been focused on polymer composites with combined functional fillers. In this paper, we report a method for creating an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic composite with a low amount of conductive carbon and magnetic fillers preparation. Also, we investigate the mechanical, thermophysical, and electrodynamic characteristics of the resulting composites. Increasing the combined filler amount in the ABS composite from 1 to 5 wt % leads to a composite conductivity growth of almost 50 times. It is necessary to underline the temperature decrease of 5 wt % mass loss and, accordingly, the composite heat resistance reduction with an increase in the combined filler from 1 to 5 wt %, while the thermal conductivity remains almost constant. It was established that electrodynamic and physical-mechanical characteristics depend on the agglomeration of fillers. This work is expected to reveal the potential of combining commercially available fillers to construct effective materials with good electromagnetic interference (EMI) protection using mass production methods (extrusion and injection molding).

Comparative Study of the Foaming Behavior of Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Copolymer Foams Fabricated Using Chemical and Physical Foaming Processes

Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), a crucial elastomeric resin, finds extensive application in the footwear industry. Conventional chemical foaming agents, including azodicarbonamide and 4,4'-oxybis(benzenesulfonyl hydrazide), have been identified as environmentally problematic. Hence, this study explores the potential of physical foaming of EVA using supercritical nitrogen as a sustainable alternative, garnering considerable interest in both academia and industry. The EVA formulations and processing parameters were optimized and EVA foams with densities between 0.15 and 0.25 g/cm3 were produced. Key findings demonstrate that physical foaming not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances product quality by a uniform cell structure with small cell size (50-100 μm), a wide foaming temperature window (120-180 °C), and lower energy consumption. The research further elucidates the mechanisms of cell nucleation and growth within the crosslinked EVA network, highlighting the critical role of blowing agent dispersion and localized crosslinking around nucleated cells in defining the foam's cellular morphology. These findings offer valuable insights for producing EVA foams with a more controllable cellular structure, utilizing physical foaming techniques.

Functional Bio-Based Polymeric Hydrogels for Wastewater Treatment: From Remediation to Sensing Applications

In recent years, many researchers have focused on designing hydrogels with specific functional groups that exhibit high affinity for various contaminants, such as heavy metals, organic pollutants, pathogens, or nutrients, or environmental parameters. Novel approaches, including cross-linking strategies and the use of nanomaterials, have been employed to enhance the structural integrity and performance of the desired hydrogels. The evolution of these hydrogels is further highlighted, with an emphasis on fine-tuning features, including water absorption capacity, environmental pollutant/factor sensing and selectivity, and recyclability. Furthermore, this review investigates the emerging topic of stimuli-responsive smart hydrogels, underscoring their potential in both sorption and detection of water pollutants. By critically assessing a wide range of studies, this review not only synthesizes existing knowledge, but also identifies advantages and limitations, and describes future research directions in the field of chemically engineered hydrogels for water purification and monitoring with a low environmental impact as an important resource for chemists and multidisciplinary researchers, leading to improvements in sustainable water management technology.

Fabrication of Soft Biodegradable Foam with Improved Shrinkage Resistance and Thermal Stability

The soft PBAT foam shows good flexibility, high elasticity, degradable nature, and it can be used as an environmental-friendly candidate for EVA and PU foams. Unfortunately, there are few reports on the application of PBAT as a soft foam. In this study, PBAT foam was fabricated by a pressure quenching method using CO2 as the blowing agent. A significant volume shrinkage of about 81% occurred, where the initial PBAT foam had an extremely high expansion ratio, of about 31 times. A 5-10 wt% PBS with high crystallinity was blended, and N2 with low gas solubility and diffusivity was mixed, with the aim of resisting foam shrinkage and preparing PBAT with a high final expansion ratio of 14.7 times. The possible mechanism behind this phenomenon was established, and the increased matrix modulus and decreased pressure difference within and outside the cell structure were the main reasons for the shrinkage resistance. The properties of PBAT and PBAT/PBS foams with a density of 0.1 g/cm3 were measured, based on the requirements for shoe applications. The 5-10 wt% PBS loading presented advantages in reducing thermal shrinkage at 75 °C/40 min, without compromising the hardness, elasticity, and the compression set, which ensures that PBAT/PBS foams have good prospects for use as soft foams.

Natural Polymer-Based Hydrogel Dressings for Wound Healing

Significance: Acute wounds such as severe burns and chronic wounds like diabetic ulcers present a significant threat to human health. Wound dressings made from natural polymers offer inherent properties that effectively enhance wound healing outcomes and reduce healing time. Recent Advances: Numerous innovative hydrogels are being developed and translated to the clinic to successfully treat various wound types. This underscores the substantial potential of hydrogels in the future wound care market. Economically, annual sales of wound care products are projected to reach $15-22 billion by 2024. Critical Issues: While chitosan-, cellulose-, and collagen-based hydrogel dressings are currently commercially available, scaling-up and manufacturing hydrogels for commercial products remain a challenging process. In addition, ensuring the sterility and stability of the chemical or biological components comprising the hydrogel is a critical consideration. Future Directions: In light of the persistent increase in wound fatalities and the resulting economic and social impacts, as well as the importance of educating the public about dietary health and disease, there should be increased investment in new wound care dressings, particularly hydrogels derived from natural products. With numerous researchers dedicated to advancing preclinical hydrogels, the future holds promise for more innovative and more personalized hydrogel wound dressings.

Constructing multi-layer heterogeneous interfaces in liquid metal graphite hybrid powder: Towards microwave absorption enhancement

Carbon based materials are widely used in the preparation of microwave absorption materials due to their low density, high attenuation loss and large specific surface area. However, their high conductivity usually leads to high reflection loss. In this study, multi-layer heterogeneous interfaces were constructed in liquid metal graphite hybrid powder to reduce reflection loss and enhance microwave absorption performance. Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) layer was formed in Ga coated graphite powder to improve impedance matching and attenuation constant via an annealing treatment. Specifically, the hybrid particles with 50 wt% Ga and being annealed at 120 °C for 2 h have a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) value of -42.68 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.11 GHz at a thickness of 3.3 mm. The hybrid particles not only have multi-layer structures with different electrical conductivity, but also form heterojunctions between different interfaces, which can further enhance dipole and interfacial polarization.

Smart Composite Materials with Self-Healing Properties: A Review on Design and Applications

Research on self-healing materials spans multiple academic disciplines and employs a variety of methodologies. Nature has been a major source of inspiration for developing self-healing materials and will likely continue to inspire innovative ideas in this field. This review article covers the principles of self-healing mechanisms, focusing on both autonomous and non-autonomous procedures. It explores both intrinsic and extrinsic self-healing abilities by considering their components, structures, and design. Additionally, a detailed analysis of the application of these materials across various sectors is provided, including aerospace, automotive, marine, energy, medical and healthcare, military, and construction. Finally, the review paper highlights the advancements in encapsulation technologies for microcapsules, their thermal stability, their mechanical properties, and the compatibility of healing agents with the matrix, which play a crucial role in the effectiveness of self-healing processes.

Additive manufacturing of bioactive and biodegradable poly (lactic acid)-tricalcium phosphate scaffolds modified with zinc oxide for guided bone tissue repair

Bioactive and biodegradable scaffolds that mimic the natural extracellular matrix of bone serve as temporary structures to guide new bone tissue growth. In this study, 3D-printed scaffolds composed of poly (lactic acid) (PLA)-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) (90-10 wt.%) were modified with 1%, 5%, and 10 wt.% of ZnO to enhance bone tissue regeneration. A commercial chain extender named Joncryl was incorporated alongside ZnO to ensure the printability of the composites. Filaments were manufactured using a twin-screw extruder and subsequently used to print 3D scaffolds via fused filament fabrication (FFF). The scaffolds exhibited a homogeneous distribution of ZnO and TCP particles, a reproducible structure with 300 μm pores, and mechanical properties suitable for bone tissue engineering, with an elastic modulus around 100 MPa. The addition of ZnO resulted in enhanced surface roughness on the scaffolds, particularly for ZnO microparticles, achieving values up to 241 nm. This rougher topography was responsible for enhancing protein adsorption on the scaffolds, with an increase of up to 85% compared to the PLA-TCP matrix. Biological analyses demonstrated that the presence of ZnO promotes mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) proliferation and differentiation into osteoblasts. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, an important indicator of early osteogenic differentiation, increased up to 29%. The PLA-TCP composite containing 5% ZnO microparticles exhibited an optimized degradation rate and enhanced bioactivity, indicating its promising potential for bone repair applications.

Bio-Based Epoxy Vitrimers with Excellent Properties of Self-Healing, Recyclability, and Welding

The development of more recyclable materials is a key requirement for a transition towards a more circular economy. Thanks to exchange reactions, vitrimer, an attractive alternative for recyclable materials, is an innovative class of polymers that is able to change its topology without decreasing its connectivity. In this work, a bisphenol compound (VP) was prepared from saturated cardanol, i.e., 3-pentadecylphenol and vanillyl alcohol. Then, VP was epoxidized to obtain epoxide (VPGE). Finally, VPGE and citric acid (CA) were polymerized in the presence of catalyst TBD to prepare a fully bio-based vitrimer based on transesterification. The results from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the VPGE/CA system could be crosslinked at around 163 °C. The cardanol-derived vitrimers had good network rearrangement properties. Meanwhile, because of the dynamic structural elements in the network, the material was endowed with excellent self-healing, welding, and recyclability.

Predicting polymer solubility from phase diagrams to compatibility: a perspective on challenges and opportunities

Polymer processing, purification, and self-assembly have significant roles in the design of polymeric materials. Understanding how polymers behave in solution (e.g., their solubility, chemical properties, etc.) can improve our control over material properties via their processing-structure-property relationships. For many decades the polymer science community has relied on thermodynamic and physics-based models to aid in this endeavor, but all rely on disparate data sets and use-case scenarios. Hence, there are still significant challenges to predict a priori the solubility of a polymer, whether it is for selecting sustainable solvents, obtaining thermodynamic parameters for phase separation, or navigating the coexistence curve. This perspective aims to discuss the different approaches of applying computational tools to predict polymer solubility, with a significant focus on machine learning techniques to capture the rapid progress in that space. We examine challenges and opportunities that remain for creating a comprehensive solubility toolset that can accelerate the design of a broad range of applications including films, membranes, and pharmaceuticals.

Complex isomerism influencing the textural properties of organometallic [Cu(salen)] porous polymers: paramagnetic solid-state NMR characterization and heterogeneous catalysis

Although organometallic porous polymer networks are recognized as promising heterogeneous catalysts, the relationship between ligand/monomer geometry and network parameters is usually not well understood due to the lack of atom-resolved characterization methods for the amorphous network matrix. In this work, a series of copper(II) salen-type metal complexes was synthesized, using trans- and cis-1,2-diaminocyclohexane segments, and thoroughly characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solution- and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Terminal ethynyl groups of the complexes were then transformed into polyacetylene chains by coordination chain-growth homopolymerization, resulting in highly porous (458-655 m2 g-1) organometallic polymer networks with a copper(II) ion content of about 12 wt%. The presence of paramagnetic copper(II) moieties in these complexes and respective polymer networks required the application of tailored NMR techniques, which together with X-ray crystallography and DFT calculations of the paramagnetic NMR shifts made it possible to investigate the differences in the complex geometry in liquid, powder and crystalline form and compare it with the complex geometry in polymer networks. All prepared organometallic polymer networks were also tested as heterogeneous catalysts for styrene oxidation with uncommonly high substrate conversions and compared with their low-molecular-weight analogues. The high reusability of such heterogeneous polymer-based catalysts was also proven.

Efficient Demulsification of Crude Oil Emulsion Using Novel Sugar-based Surfactant

This study aimed to synthesize ecofriendly and low-cost surfactant-based sugar, HA-ST, under mild conditions and a short route via an opening ring of hexadecylsuccinic anhydride (HA) using starch (ST). HA-ST's chemical structure, thermal behavior, and surface activity were evaluated using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and a pendant drop technique. The results indicated HA-ST formation, thermal stability, and surface activity. HA-ST's green character, low cost, and surface activity recommended its use as a demulsifier for crude oil emulsions at different affecting parameters such as temperature, seawater ratio (SR), demulsifier concentration, demulsification time (DT), and pH. HA-ST demulsification efficiency (DE) was evaluated and compared with a commercial demulsifier (CD). The results showed improved HA-ST's DE with rising temperature, SR, demulsifier concentration, DT, and pH. The DE of HAST reached 100% at 50% of SR and 250 ppm of demulsifier concentration; the same results were obtained using CD. In contrast, HA-ST gave relatively lower DE at low SR (10%) with a value of 70% than the obtained using CD with a value of 75%. The green character, low cost, and DE of HA-ST make it suitable for demulsifying crude oil emulsions, especially those containing more than 30% seawater, compared with CD, which commonly contains two or more traditional surfactants.

Microplastic-Free Microcapsules Using Supramolecular Self-Assembly of Bis-Urea Molecules at an Emulsion Interface

Encapsulation technology is well established for entrapping active ingredients within an outer shell for their protection and controlled release. However, many solutions employed industrially use nondegradable cross-linked synthetic polymers for shell formation. To curb rising microplastic pollution, regulatory policies are forcing industries to substitute the use of such intentionally added microplastics with environmentally friendly alternatives. This work demonstrates a one-pot process to make microplastic-free microcapsules using supramolecular self-assembly of bis-ureas. Molecular bis-urea species generated in-situ spontaneously self-assemble at the interface of an oil-in-water emulsion via hydrogen bonding to form a shell held together by noncovalent bonds. In addition, Laponite nanodiscs were introduced in the formulation to restrict aggregation observed during the self-assembly and to reduce the porosity of the shell, leading to well-dispersed microcapsules (mean Sauter diameter d [3,2] ∼ 5 μm) with high encapsulation efficiency (∼99%). Accelerated release tests revealed an increase in characteristic release time of the active by more than an order of magnitude after encapsulation. The mechanical strength parameters of these capsules were comparable to some of the commercial, nondegradable melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules. With mild operating conditions in an aqueous environment, this technology has real potential to offer an industrially viable method for producing microplastic-free microcapsules.

Development of bio-composite mulch film from cotton gin wastes: Study of pesticide residue and outdoor stability and degradation

Non-degradable plastic mulch films used in agriculture are polluting the environment by leaving residues and microplastics in the soil. They are also difficult to recycle due to contamination during their use. Biodegradable mulch films are needed as alternatives so that they can be used effectively during the growing season and later be ploughed to be degraded in soil. However, market-available so-called biodegradable mulch films are very slow to degrade in the natural environment and thus do not fit with crop rotation demands or annual cultivation. In this study, we have developed mulch films from cotton gin trash (CGT) and/or gin motes (GM) in combination with biodegradable polycaprolactone and demonstrated their effectiveness over 3 months in outdoor conditions. Both the stability and degradation behaviours of mulch film samples were observed when they were placed on top of the soil and buried in the soil, respectively. Pesticide residue analysis also was carried out on CGT powder to identify and quantify individual pesticides against a matrix of known pesticides. The mulch films prepared in this study showed comparable and stable mechanical properties compared to commercial biodegradable mulch film, though were much quicker to degrade when buried in the soil. No pesticides were detected in the CGT samples. The films produced were vapour-permeable and may be useful in practical agricultural settings by being able to maintain consistent soil moisture and allowing precipitation to penetrate gradually. The lab-scale production cost for the film was 98.8 AUD/kg, which could be lowered by integrating a continuous film line in large-scale production.

A Review of Capacity Decay Studies of All-vanadium Redox Flow Batteries: Mechanism and State Estimation

As a promising large-scale energy storage technology, all-vanadium redox flow battery has garnered considerable attention. However, the issue of capacity decay significantly hinders its further development, and thus the problem remains to be systematically sorted out and further explored. This review provides comprehensive insights into the multiple factors contributing to capacity decay, encompassing vanadium cross-over, self-discharge reactions, water molecules migration, gas evolution reactions, and vanadium precipitation. Subsequently, it analyzes the impact of various battery parameters on capacity. Based on this foundation, the article expounds upon the significance of battery internal state estimation technology. Additionally, the review also summarizes domestic and international mathematical models utilized for simulating capacity decay, serving as a valuable reference for future research endeavors. Finally, through the comparison of traditional experimental methods and mathematical modeling methods, this article offers effective guidance for the future development direction of battery state monitoring. This review generally overview the problems related to the capacity attenuation of all-vanadium flow batteries, which is of great significance for understanding the mechanism behind capacity decay and state monitoring technology of all-vanadium redox flow battery.

Properties of a Dental Adhesive Containing Graphene and DOPA-Modified Graphene

Graphene is a promising biomaterial. However, its dispersion in aqueous medium is challenging. This study aimed to modify graphene nanoparticles with L-dopa to improve the properties of experimental dental adhesives. Adhesives were formulated with 0% (control), 0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75% of graphene, modified or not. Particle modification and dispersion were microscopically assessed. Degree of conversion was tested by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Flexural strength and modulus of elasticity were evaluated by a 3-point flexural test. Bond strength was tested by shear. To test water sorption/solubility, samples were weighed during hydration and dehydration. Antibacterial activity was tested by Streptococcus mutans colony-forming units quantification. Cytotoxicity on fibroblasts was evaluated through a dentin barrier test. The modification of graphene improved the particle dispersion. Control presented the highest degree of conversion, flexural strength, and bond strength. In degree of conversion, 0.25% of groups were similar to control. In bond strength, groups of graphene modified by L-dopa were similar to Control. The modulus of elasticity was similar between groups. Cytotoxicity and water sorption/solubility decreased as particles increased. Compared to graphene, less graphene modified by L-dopa was needed to promote antibacterial activity. By modifying graphene with L-dopa, the properties of graphene and, therefore, the adhesives incorporated by it were enhanced.

Synthesis of star-shaped poly(lactide)s, poly(valerolactone)s and poly(caprolactone)s via ROP catalyzed by N-donor tin(ii) cations and comparison of their wetting properties with linear analogues

In this study, we report the use of N-coordinated tin(ii) cations [L1→Sn(H2O)][OTf]2·THF (1) and [L1→SnCl][SnCl3] (2) (L1 = 1,2-(C5H4N-2-CH = N)2CH2CH2) as efficient ROP catalysts, which, in combination with benzyl alcohol, afford well-defined linear poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(δ-valerolactones) (PVL) via an activated monomer mechanism (AMM). Thanks to the versatility of complexes 1 and 2 as catalysts, star-shaped PCL, PVL and PLA were also prepared using three-, four-, five- and six-functional alcohols. The number of arms was determined by SEC-MALS-Visco analysis. Spin-coated thin layers of linear and selected six-armed polymers were further studied in terms of their wettability to water. Attention was focused on the influence of the composition and structure of the polymers. Finally, to increase the hydrophobic properties of the studied polymers, stannaboroxines L2(Ph)Sn[(OB-(C6H4-4-CF3))2O] and L2(Ph)Sn[(OB-(C6H4-3,5-CF3)2)2O] (L2 = C6H3-2,6-(Me2NCH2)2) were applied.

Characterization Methods to Determine Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) in Hydrogels

Significant developments have been achieved with the invention of hydrogels. They are effective in many fields such as wastewater treatment, food, agriculture, pharmaceutical applications, and drug delivery. Although hydrogels have been used successfully in these areas, there is a need to make them better for future applications. Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) can be created to make hydrogels more adjustable and suitable for a specific purpose. IPN formation is an innovative approach for polymeric systems. It brings two or more polymer networks together with entanglements. The properties of IPNs are controlled by its chemistry, crosslinking density, and morphology. Therefore, it is necessary to understand characterization methods in order to detect the formation of IPN structure and to develop the properties of hydrogels. In recent studies, IPN structure in hydrogels has been determined via chemical, physical, and mechanical methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and rheology methods. In this paper, these characterization methods will be explained, recent studies will be scrutinized, and the effectiveness of these methods to confirm IPN formation will be evaluated.

Visualizing flow dynamics and restart of Carbopol gel solutions in tube and parallel-plates geometries with wall slip

The present study examines the impact of slip in Carbopol solutions during the restart flow in pipelines utilizing in situ visualization techniques. Rheological tests were conducted using smooth and hatched parallel plate geometries to obtain the rheological characteristics of the solutions. The behavior of the solutions in the creep tests is compared with those in the experimental unit. Three flow regimes were identified through rheological and experimental setup tests: non-flow, slip, and yielded. The slip regime allowed the establishment of a slip static yield stress value, indicating significant deformation states, and a restart pressure decrease of about 61% when compared to the static yield stress. The flow dynamics under the wall slip effect is captured by velocity profiles, velocity contour maps and velocity gradient. Transient correlations of the scaling law type were determined, with wall slip in proportion to the velocity gradient and wall shear stress. Additionally, the concentration of viscoplastic material in the solution increased the scaling law index. This research seeks to provide valuable findings by quantifying the effects of apparent wall slip through in situ measurements. Such insights are crucial for designing and managing pipeline transport systems that handle yield stress fluids, applicable across various industries including cosmetics, food processing, and the production of waxy oils.

Thermoreversible [2 + 2] Photodimers of Monothiomaleimides and Intrinsically Recyclable Covalent Networks Thereof

The development of intrinsically recyclable cross-linked materials remains challenged by the inherently unfavorable chemical equilibrium that dictates the efficiency of the reversible covalent bonding/debonding chemistry. Rather than having to (externally) manipulate the bonding equilibrium, we here introduce a new reversible chemistry platform based on monosubstituted thiomaleimides that can undergo complete and independent light-activated covalent bonding and on-demand thermal debonding above 120 °C. Specifically, repeated bonding/debonding of a small-molecule thiomaleimide [2 + 2] photodimer is demonstrated over five heat/light cycles with full conversion in both directions, thereby regenerating its initial monothiomaleimide constituents. This motivated the synthesis of multifunctional thiomaleimide reagents as precursors for the design of covalently cross-linked networks that display intrinsic switching between a monomeric and polymeric state. The resulting materials are shown to covalently dissociate and depolymerize upon heating both in solution and in bulk, thus transforming the densely photo-cross-linked material back into a viscous liquid. Temperature-regulated photorheology evidenced the intrinsic recyclability of the thiomaleimide-based thermosets during multiple cycles of UV cross-linking and thermal de-cross-linking. The thermally reversible photodimerization of thiomaleimides presents a new addition to the designer playground of dynamic polymer networks, providing interesting opportunities for the reprocessing and closed-loop recycling of covalently cross-linked materials.

Upgrading and Enhancement of Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate with Chain Extenders: In-Depth Material Characterization

Chemical chain extenders (CEs) can be used to restore the properties of recycled low-molecular-weight polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the type and concentration of the CEs Joncryl and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) on the viscosity and other rheological properties with a unique combination of different methods based on industrial samples originating from recycled PET bottles and trays. The resulting chain-extended thermoplastics were characterized by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, viscometry, cone plate rheometry, pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy, optical photothermal infrared spectroscopy, 13C solid-state- and 1H NMR liquid spectroscopy, and size exclusion chromatography. For a recycled PET mixture containing bottle and tray materials, our investigations have shown that a significantly better effect for chain elongation can be achieved with Joncryl compared to PMDA. This can presumably be attributed to water molecules formed during the use of PMDA, which accelerate the degradation of PET. The storage modulus values are therefore significantly higher for the samples with Joncryl compared to PMDA. The results of this study show that chain extension with Joncryl proceeds better compared to the reaction with PMDA.

Ion-Selective Transport Promotion Enabled by Angstrom-Scale Nanochannels in Dendrimer-Assembled Polyamide Nanofilm for Efficient Electrodialysis

The ion permeability and selectivity of membranes are crucial in nanofluidic behavior, impacting industries ranging from traditional to advanced manufacturing. Herein, we demonstrate the engineering of ion-conductive membranes featuring angstrom-scale ion-transport channels by introducing ionic polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers for ion separation. The exterior quaternary ammonium-rich structure contributes to significant electrostatic charge exclusion due to enhanced local charge density; the interior protoplasmic channels of PAMAM dendrimer are assembled to provide additional degrees of free volume. This facilitates the monovalent ion transfer while maintaining continuity and efficient ion screening. The dendrimer-assembled hybrid membrane achieves high monovalent ion permeance of 2.81 mol m-2 h-1 (K+), reaching excellent mono/multivalent selectivity up to 20.1 (K+/Mg2+) and surpassing the permselectivities of state-of-the-art membranes. Both experimental results and simulating calculations suggest that the impressive ion selectivity arises from the significant disparity in transport energy barrier between mono/multivalent ions, induced by the "exterior-interior" synergistic effects of bifunctional membrane channels.

Design of Cellulose Nanocrystal-Based Self-Healing Nanocomposite Hydrogels and Application in Motion Sensing and Sweat Detection

Hydrogels, as flexible materials, have been widely used in the field of flexible sensors. Human sweat contains a variety of biomarkers that can reflect the physiological state of the human body. Therefore, it is of great practical significance and application value to realize the detection of sweat composition and combine it with human motion sensing through a hydrogel. Based on mussel-inspired chemistry, polydopamine (PDA) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were coated on the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to obtain CNC-based nanocomposites (CNCs@PDA-Au), which could simultaneously enhance the mechanical, electrochemical, and self-healing properties of hydrogels. The CNCs@PDA-Au was composited with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to obtain the nanocomposite hydrogel (PVA/CNCs@PDA-Au) by freeze-thaw cycles. The PVA/CNCs@PDA-Au has excellent mechanical strength (7.2 MPa) and self-healing properties (88.3%). The motion sensors designed with PVA/CNCs@PDA-Au exhibited a fast response time (122.9 ms), wide strain sensing range (0-600.0%), excellent stability, and fatigue resistance. With the unique electrochemical redox properties of uric acid, the designed hydrogel sensor successfully realized the detection of uric acid in sweat with a wide detection range (1.0-100.0 μmol/L) and low detection limit (0.42 μmol/L). In this study, the dual detection of human motion and uric acid in sweat was successfully realized by the designed PVA/CNCs@PDA-Au nanocomposite hydrogel.

Biosustainable Multiscale Transparent Nanocomposite Films for Sensitive Pressure and Humidity Sensors

Light weight, thinness, transparency, flexibility, and insulation are the key indicators for flexible electronic device substrates. The common flexible substrates are usually polymer materials, but their recycling is an overwhelming challenge. Meanwhile, paper substrates are limited in practical applications because of their poor mechanical and thermal stability. However, natural biomaterials have excellent mechanical properties and versatility thanks to their organic-inorganic multiscale structures, which inspired us to design an organic-inorganic nanocomposite film. For this purpose, a bio-inspired multiscale film was developed using cellulose nanofibers with abundant hydrophilic functional groups to assist in dispersing hydroxyapatite nanowires. The thickness of the biosustainable film is only 40 μm, and it incorporates distinctive mechanical properties (strength: 52.8 MPa; toughness: 0.88 MJ m-3) and excellent optical properties (transmittance: 80.0%; haze: 71.2%). Consequently, this film is optimal as a substrate employed for flexible sensors, which can transmit capacitance and resistance signals through wireless Bluetooth, showing an ultrasensitive response to pressure and humidity (for example, responding to finger pressing with 5000% signal change and exhaled water vapor with 4000% signal change). Therefore, the comprehensive performance of the biomimetic multiscale organic-inorganic composite film confers a prominent prospect in flexible electronics devices, food packaging, and plastic substitution.

Deep-Learning Interatomic Potential Connects Molecular Structural Ordering to the Macroscale Properties of Polyacrylonitrile

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is an important commercial polymer, bearing atactic stereochemistry resulting from nonselective radical polymerization. As such, an accurate, fundamental understanding of governing interactions among PAN molecular units is indispensable for advancing the design principles of final products at reduced processability costs. While ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations can provide the necessary accuracy for treating key interactions in polar polymers, such as dipole-dipole interactions and hydrogen bonding, and analyzing their influence on the molecular orientation, their implementation is limited to small molecules only. Herein, we show that the neural network interatomic potentials (NNIPs) that are trained on the small-scale AIMD data (acquired for oligomers) can be efficiently employed to examine the structures and properties at large scales (polymers). NNIP provides critical insight into intra- and interchain hydrogen-bonding and dipolar correlations and accurately predicts the amorphous bulk PAN structure validated by modeling the experimental X-ray structure factor. Furthermore, the NNIP-predicted PAN properties, such as density and elastic modulus, are in good agreement with their experimental values. Overall, the trend in the elastic modulus is found to correlate strongly with the PAN structural orientations encoded in the Hermans orientation factor. This study enables the ability to predict the structure-property relations for PAN and analogues with sustainable ab initio accuracy across scales.

Low-Temperature Rapid Polymerization of Intrinsic Conducting PAD/OC Hydrogels with a Self-Adhesive and Sensitive Sensor for Outdoor Damage Repair and Detection

Intrinsic conducting hydrogels fabricated in situ at low temperatures with self-adhesive properties and excellent flexibility hold significant promise for energy applications and outdoor damage repair. However, challenges such as low polymerization rate and self adhesion, insufficient ionic conductivity, inflexibility, and poor stability under extreme cold conditions have hindered their utilization as high-performance sensors. In this study, we designed an intrinsic conducting hydrogel (PADOC) composed of acrylic acid, acryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride, N,N'-methylenebis(2-propenamide), self-fabricated oxidized curdlan (OC), and a water/glycerol binary solvent. The novel hydrogel exhibited rapid gelation (30 s) at 0 °C facilitated by the promotion of OC, without the need for external energy input. Our findings from FT-IR, NMR, XPS, XRD, EPR spectra, MS, and DSC analyses revealed that OC underwent selective oxidation via the evolved Fenton reaction at 30 °C, serving as bioaccelerators for PAD polymerization. Due to OC's reductive structure and increased solubility, the reaction activation energy of the PAD polymerization reaction significantly reduced from 103.2 to 54.4 kJ/mol. PADOC ionic hydrogels demonstrated an electrical conductivity of 1.00 S/m, 0.7% low hysteresis, 39.6 kPa self-adhesive strength, and 923% strain-at-break and kept even at -20 °C owing to dense hydrogen and ionic bonds between PAD and OC chains. Furthermore, PADOC ionic hydrogels exhibited antifatigue properties for 10 cycles (0-100%) due to electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Remarkably, using a self-designed device, the rapid polymerization of PADOC effectively repaired copper pipeline leakage under 86 kPa pressure and detected 1% strain variation as a strain sensor. This study opens a new avenue for the rapid gelation of self-adhesive and flexible intrinsic conducting hydrogels with robust sensor performance.

Structural and rheological properties of diluted alkali soluble pectin from apple and carrot

Pectin, a complex polysaccharide found in plant cell walls, plays a crucial role in various industries due to its functional properties. The diluted alkali-soluble pectin (DASP) fractions that result from the stepwise extraction of apples and carrots were studied to evaluate their structural and rheological properties. Homogalacturonan and rhamnogalacturonan I, in different proportions, were the main pectin domains that composed DASP from both materials. Atomic force microscopy revealed that the molecules of apple DASP were longer and more branched. A persistence length greater than 40 nm indicated that the pectin molecules deposited on mica behaved as stiff molecules. The weight-averaged molar mass was similar for both samples. Intrinsic viscosity values of 194.91 mL·g-1 and 186.79 mL·g-1 were obtained for apple and carrot DASP, respectively. Rheological measurements showed greater structural strength for apple-extracted pectin, whereas carrot pectin was characterized by a higher linear viscoelasticity limit. This comparison showed that the pectin fractions extracted by diluted alkali are structurally different and have different rheological properties depending on their botanical origin. The acquired insights can enhance the customized use of pectin residue and support further investigations in industries relying on pectin applications.
