Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify direct and indirect associations between PCEs and social support to emotion regulation outcomes in adults with ADHD. METHOD Adults with ADHD (n = 81) reported PCEs, current social support, and emotion regulation. Conditional effects modeling examined the direct and indirect relationships between PCEs and emotion dysregulation through social support. RESULTS Higher PCEs were indirectly related to improved emotion regulation through increased social support generally (β = -.70, 95% CI [-1.32, -0.17], and specifically through belonging (β = -.43, 95% CI [ -0.87, -0.05], self-esteem (β = -.61, 95% CI [-1.08, -0.27], and tangible social support (β = -.50, 95% CI [-1.07, -0.02]. CONCLUSIONS PCEs may protect emotion regulation in adults with ADHD through social support, possibly through facilitating social connections, increasing access to social support, and sustaining emotion regulation strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current research suggests that people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at higher risk of physical and mental health disorders. This study aimed to explore these health risks in ADHD from the perspectives of multiple stakeholders. METHODS This study forms part of the 'Managing young people with ADHD in Primary care (MAP) study'. A survey developed by the study team was distributed to over 16 year olds with ADHD, their supporters, primary healthcare professionals and health commissioners across England, via social media and through patient/clinical networks (September-October 2022). This survey contained two questions on health risks. Question one asked about views on health risks in ADHD (free text). Question two asked about advice given (options list and free text). Descriptive statistics summarised responses to questions one and two, and qualitative analysis (reflexive thematic analysis) was used to explore free text responses from question one. RESULTS 782 participants responded to the MAP survey. Of these, 206 healthcare professionals, 157 people with ADHD and 88 supporters answered question one. The most mentioned perceived risks were substance misuse, sleep disorders, weight management and smoking. More people with ADHD reported disordered eating as a health risk (n = 32) than healthcare professionals (n = 5). Generated themes included perceived health risks, impact of living with ADHD, lack of adequate healthcare, and need for ADHD awareness. In respect to advice given (question two), based on responses from 258 professionals, 162 people with ADHD and 100 supporters, the most common advice discussed in consultation was mental health (n = 149, n = 50 and n = 17 respectively). High numbers of respondents reported not giving/receiving advice on wider health (n = 38, n = 88 and n = 61 respectively). CONCLUSIONS Findings demonstrate that respondents perceived a range of physical and mental health risks posed by ADHD. These related to difficulties with activities of daily living, as well as healthcare interactions and the impact of core features of ADHD (e.g. impulsivity, emotional dysregulation). These risks are not currently explicitly addressed in United Kingdom national guidance on ADHD. More work is needed to examine and address the broader health outcomes of people with ADHD.

Abstract
Introduction Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects up to 5% of the population and is characterised by symptoms of impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattention. These symptoms are significantly impairing and carry additional risks for children and adults with ADHD, including negative mental health (e.g. depression), physical health (e.g. obesity) and societal outcomes (e.g. imprisonment, divorce). Very few studies have attempted to synthesise these risks in one publication due to the breadth of evidence published on the adverse outcomes of ADHD. Methods An umbrella review was performed to identify reviews (systematic, meta-analysis and narrative) that investigate the risks arising from having ADHD. We conducted a narrative synthesis of the findings and conducted a quality review of the included publications. Results Upon searching five databases, 16,675 records were identified. Of these, 125 reviews met the criteria for inclusion. A narrative synthesis of these findings highlighted three key domains of risks associated with ADHD: mental health, physical health, social and lifestyle. Most reviews were of good and moderate quality. Discussion This review highlights the many risks associated with having ADHD, beyond its three key symptom domains and the impact of the condition on daily functioning. Abstract
Introduction: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition with severe and life-long consequences. Adolescents and young adults represent a particularly vulnerable subgroup because of the unique demands of their developmental stage. Despite the well-known efficacy of medication treatment for ADHD, there remains a notable concern regarding poor medication adherence in this population. Objectives: This systematic literature review aimed to synthesize the existing empirical evidence on the outcomes and consequences of medication nonadherence among adolescents and young adults with ADHD. Methods: An extensive database search was conducted on September 26, 2022, with no time limits applied. The databases included Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, and PsycINFO. Results: Six studies met the inclusion criteria. Each study revealed that medication nonadherence was associated with a range of adverse outcomes, including decreased academic performance, heightened familial, and psychological stress, and an increased likelihood of substance use, pregnancy, obesity, and injury. Conversely, adherence led to improvements in at least one ADHD-related outcome. Conclusions: Research exploring the consequences of suboptimal medication adherence in adolescents and young adults with ADHD is currently limited, and effective strategies to address this issue remain scarce. A thorough understanding of such consequences is critical for developing interventions aimed at improving medication adherence and mitigating the risk of adverse outcomes, especially considering the susceptibility of this population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Although a combined treatment of prescription medication and psychotherapy provides long-term benefits for adults with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), little is known about the prevalence of receiving such multimodal treatment. This study investigated trends in the prevalence and correlates of multimodal treatment among U.S.-insured adults newly diagnosed with ADHD. METHODS 495,180 U.S. adults from the Komodo Healthcare Map with newly diagnosed ADHD in 2017-2021 were included. Descriptive statistics were used to estimate trends in the prevalence of treatment (no treatment, prescription-only, psychotherapy-only, or both) within 3 months from the index ADHD diagnosis. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine patient and provider characteristics associated with ADHD treatment. Analysis was conducted in May 2023. RESULTS From 2017 to 2021, the prevalence of newly diagnosed ADHD adults receiving multimodal, prescription-only, and psychotherapy-only treatment within 3 months following their first diagnosis increased from 12.9% to 21.4%, 30.2% to 33.3%, and 18.4% to 20.4%, respectively. Over the same period, the prevalence of newly diagnosed ADHD adults receiving no treatment declined from 38.5% to 25%. Relative to their counterparts, the odds of receiving multimodal ADHD treatment were significantly lower (p<0.05) for men, older adults, adults with multiple co-existing conditions, Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries, and those living in socially disadvantaged areas. Furthermore, the odds of receiving multimodal treatment were higher (p<0.05) for adults who saw a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or behavioral care (non-physician) provider on their first visit with an ADHD diagnosis, compared to those who saw a physician. CONCLUSIONS 25% of newly diagnosed ADHD adults received no treatment in 2021 and 53.7% only received a single-modality treatment-raising concerns about the potential implications of untreated ADHD or insufficient treatment on the persistence of ADHD-related impairments, morbidity, productivity, and downstream healthcare cost. The study also highlighted potential sociodemographic, clinical, and provider disparities in ADHD treatment.

Abstract
The course of childhood-onset attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) varies across individuals; some will experience persistent symptoms while others' symptoms fluctuate or remit. We describe the longitudinal course of ADHD symptoms and associated clinical characteristics in adolescents with childhood-onset ADHD. Participants (aged 6-12 at baseline) from the Longitudinal Assessment of Manic Symptoms (LAMS) study who met DSM criteria for ADHD prior to age 12 were evaluated annually with the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for eight years. At each timepoint, participants were categorized as meeting ADHD criteria, subthreshold criteria, or not having ADHD. Stability of course was defined by whether participants experienced consistent ADHD symptoms, fluctuating symptoms, or remission. The persistence of the symptoms was defined by symptom status at the final two follow-ups (stable ADHD, stable remission, stable partial remission, unstable). Of 685 baseline participants, 431 had childhood-onset ADHD and at least two follow-ups. Half had a consistent course of ADHD, nearly 40% had a remitting course, and the remaining participants had a fluctuating course. More than half of participants met criteria for ADHD at the end of their participation; about 30% demonstrated stable full remission, 15% had unstable symptoms, and one had stable partial remission. Participants with a persistent course and stable ADHD outcome reported the highest number of symptoms and were most impaired. This work builds on earlier studies that describe fluctuating symptoms in young people with childhood-onset ADHD. Results emphasize the importance of ongoing monitoring and detailed assessment of factors likely to influence course and outcome to help young people with childhood-onset ADHD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Criminality rates are higher among persons with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and evidence that medication reduces crime is limited. Medication rates between clinics vary widely even within universal health care systems, partly because of providers' treatment preferences. We used this variation to estimate causal effects of pharmacological treatment of ADHD on 4-year criminal outcomes. METHOD We used Norwegian population-level registry data to identify all unique patients aged 10 to 18 years diagnosed with ADHD between 2009 and 2011 (n = 5,624), their use of ADHD medication, and subsequent criminal charges. An instrumental variable design, exploiting variation in provider preference for ADHD medication between clinics, was used to identify causal effects of ADHD medication on crime among patients on the margin of treatment, that is, patients who receive treatment because of their provider's preference. RESULTS Criminality was higher in patients with ADHD relative to the general population. Medication preference varied between clinics and strongly affected patients' treatment. Instrumental variable analyses supported a protective effect of pharmacological treatment on violence-related and public-order-related charges with numbers needed to treat of 14 and 8, respectively. There was no evidence for effects on drug-, traffic-, sexual-, or property-related charges. CONCLUSION This is the first study to demonstrate causal effects of pharmacological treatment of ADHD on some types of crimes in a population-based natural experiment. Pharmacological treatment of ADHD reduced crime related to impulsive-reactive behavior in patients with ADHD on the margin of treatment. No effects were found on crimes requiring criminal intent, conspiracy, and planning. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Few studies have characterized the nature of sleep problems among adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) using polysomnography (PSG). Additionally, although adolescents with ADHD and adolescents with sleep disturbances display similar neurocognitive deficits, the role of sleep in contributing to neurocognitive impairment in adolescent ADHD is unknown. This study investigated differences in PSG-measured sleep among adolescents with ADHD compared with non-psychiatric controls and associations with neurocognition. METHOD Medication-free adolescents aged 13 to 17 (N = 62, n = 31 with ADHD; mean age = 15.3 years; 50% female) completed a diagnostic evaluation, 3 nights of ambulatory PSG, the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery, and subjective reports of sleep and executive functioning. Linear regressions covarying for age, sex, and pubertal status examined group differences in sleep indices, and partial Pearson correlations assessed relations between sleep and neurocognition. RESULTS Although adolescents with ADHD did not exhibit differences in PSG-measured sleep duration, awakenings, or latency (ps > .05) compared with non-psychiatric controls, they displayed lower slow wave sleep percentage (β = -.40) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) electroencephalogram (EEG) delta power (β = -.29). They also exhibited greater stage 2 percentage (β = .41), NREM EEG sigma power (β = .41), and elevated self-reported sleep disturbances (ps < .05). Lower NREM EEG delta power, increased high-frequency power, and slower decline in NREM EEG delta power overnight were associated with poorer neurocognition among adolescents with ADHD. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with ADHD reported more sleep disturbances than non-psychiatric controls and exhibited differences in sleep stage distribution and NREM sleep EEG frequency. Sleep-EEG spectral indices were associated with impaired neurocognition, suggesting that physiological sleep processes may underlie neurocognitive deficits in ADHD. Future studies may clarify whether sleep plays a causal role in neurocognitive impairments in adolescent ADHD and whether interventions normalizing sleep improve neurocognition. Abstract
The boundaries between neurodevelopmental disorders are often indistinct, even among specialists. But do these boundaries exist, or do experts struggle to distinguish and categorize symptoms in order to arrive at a dominant diagnosis while comorbidity continually leaves questions about where each disorder ends and begins? What should be reconsidered? The introduction of the term 'spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders' could pave the way for a re-appraisal of the clinical continuum of neurodevelopmental disorders. This study aims to highlight the problems that emerge in the field of the differential diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders and propose a renegotiation of the distinctiveness criteria.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Improve detection of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in a safety net, hospital-based, academic pediatric practice by optimizing screening with the Pediatric Symptom Checklist attention score (PSC-AS) and further evaluation with the Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Rating Scale (VADRS). METHODS We implemented a multi-component intervention by (1) optimizing electronic medical record (EMR) features; (2) adjusting clinic operational workflow; and (3) creating a decision-making algorithm for pediatric primary care clinicians (PPCCs). We extracted 4 outcomes manually from the EMR (pediatrician acknowledgment of a positive PSC-AS, documentation of a plan for further evaluation, distribution of VADRS, and completion of at least 1 VADRS). Outcomes were measured monthly in run charts compared to the pre-intervention control period, and implementation was optimized with Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles. RESULTS PPCCs were significantly more likely to acknowledge a positive PSC-AS in the intervention versus control (65.3% vs 41.5%; p < 0.001), although this did not change documentation of a plan (70% vs 67.1%; p -value = 0.565). Significantly more children with a positive PSC-AS were distributed a parent or teacher VADRS in the intervention versus control (30.6% vs 17.7%; p -value = 0.0059), but the percentage of returned VADRS rating scales did not improve (12.9% vs 9.2%; p -value = 0.269). CONCLUSION Our ADHD detection quality improvement initiative improved use of the PSC-AS to identify attention problems and distribution of VADRS diagnostic rating scales, but additional interventions are needed to improve the completion of ADHD evaluations in primary care to ensure that children are appropriately identified and offered evidence-based care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often comorbid with schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders (SZSPD), concerns about an increased risk of psychotic events have limited its treatment with either psychostimulants or atomoxetine. AIMS To examine whether the risk of hospital admission for psychosis in people with SZSPD was increased during the year following the introduction of such medications compared with the year before. METHOD This was a retrospective cohort study using Quebec (Canada) administrative health registries, including all Quebec residents with a public prescription drug insurance plan and a diagnosis of psychotic disorder, defined by relevant ICD-9 or ICD-10 codes, who initiated either methylphenidate, amphetamines or atomoxetine, between January 2010 and December 2016, in combination with antipsychotic medication. The primary outcome was time to hospital admission for psychosis within 1 year of initiation. State sequence analysis was also used to visualise admission trajectories for psychosis in the year following initiation of these medications, compared with the previous year. RESULTS Out of 2219 individuals, 1589 (71.6%) initiated methylphenidate, 339 (15.3%) amphetamines and 291 (13.1%) atomoxetine during the study period. After adjustment, the risk of hospital admission for psychosis was decreased during the 12 months following the introduction of these medications when used in combination with antipsychotics (adjusted HR = 0.36, 95% CI 0.24-0.54; P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that, in a real-world setting, when used concurrently with antipsychotic medication, methylphenidate, amphetamines and atomoxetine may be safer than generally believed in individuals with psychotic disorders.

Abstract
Introduction Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has a global mean prevalence of 5%. Cognitive Training (CT) and Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) have shown promising results in managing ADHD symptoms, but they are not its Treatment-As-Usual (TAU). The NeuroMind Study aims to evaluate the preliminary effectiveness and feasibility of three interventions: Mindfulness for Health (M4H), CT using the NeuronUP® platform (CT), and a combination of both, Mindfulness Cognitive Training (MCT). There is empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of the M4H and NeuronUP® platform; however, this study explores for the first time the effectiveness of MCT and CT, as well as the integration of M4H into TAU. The objectives of this 5-month Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) are: (1) To analyze the preliminary effectiveness and feasibility of M4H, CT or a combination of both (MCT) added to TAU for children with ADHD; (2) To evaluate the role of psychological process variables (mindfulness and emotional regulation) as mediators of 5-month follow-up clinical outcomes; (3) To preliminarily explore whether specific sociodemographic and clinical characteristics can predict the short-and medium-term clinical response to the specific treatments. Methods and analysis Participants will be 120 children (7 to 12 years) with ADHD recruited at Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Sant Joan de Déu Terres de Lleida (Spain) randomly allocated to one of the four study arms: TAU vs. TAU + CT vs. TAU + M4H vs. TAU + MCT. An assessment to collect ADHD symptoms, Executive Functions (EF), comorbid symptoms and global functioning will be conducted pre-intervention, post-intervention (2 months after baseline) and at the 5-month follow-up. Linear mixed models and mediational models will be computed. Discussion If the preliminary effectiveness and feasibility of the MCT are demonstrated, this study could be a preliminary basis to do a full RCT with a larger sample to definitively validate the intervention. Abstract
Research has shown that during the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 20% of children and adolescents in the United States experienced mental health issues that became a significant social concern. However, recent studies have demonstrated that the majority of adolescents maintain positive emotions despite the crisis. This cross-sectional and descriptive study delves into the emotional states of adolescents during the pandemic, considering the viewpoints of both adolescents and their parents, with a specific focus on Hispanic adolescents. Survey results revealed that most adolescents reported positive and happy moods. However, a percentage of adolescents experienced worry, significant changes in feelings, and loneliness as a result of the physical and social isolation associated with virtual learning. Unfortunately, most surveyed Hispanic parents did not adequately recognize their adolescents' mood changes well. This lack of awareness, caused by factors such as an insufficient understanding about the importance of adolescent mental health, cultural reasons, language barriers, low education, unstable jobs, and more, could lead to missed opportunities for timely mental health interventions. This study seeks to provide a comprehensive discussion on the mental health of adolescents, while also advocating for the emotional wellbeing of Hispanic adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine how the concept of prevention is applicable to adolescent ADHD, which preventive interventions may be feasible, and which methods can be used to evaluate effectiveness. METHOD Following a literature search for prevention clinical trials relevant to adolescent ADHD, selected studies are critically reviewed to identify suitable targets and promising interventions. RESULTS There is some evidence from controlled studies that interventions delivered to prepubertal children at high risk for ADHD or diagnosed with ADHD may decrease the incidence or persistence of ADHD in adolescence. Uncontrolled follow-up of clinical samples and population studies suggest that treatment of adolescents with ADHD can decrease the risk for several negative functional outcomes in youth. A controlled trial found a specific cognitive training intervention to decrease risky driving. CONCLUSIONS Prevention of ADHD and associated negative outcomes is possible and of high clinical relevance. Assessing prevention effects is methodologically challenging, but feasible.

Abstract
The concept of mentalized affectivity (MA) encompasses the dimensions of identifying, processing, and expressing emotions and describes the process of making sense of and reevaluating one's affects in light of autobiographical memory. This construct was developed within the theoretical framework of mentalization and, due to its interpersonal nature, added further complexity to the emotion regulation construct. This research aimed to examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Brief-Mentalized Affectivity Scale for adolescents (B-MAS-A) on an Italian sample of young people (aged 13-19 years). Data were collected using non-probabilistic sampling and an online survey. Participants were asked to complete a large battery of instruments, including the B-MAS-A, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire, the Epistemic Trust, Mistrust, and Credulity Questionnaire, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and the General Self-Efficacy Scale. In study 1, factor analyses carried out on a total sample of 566 adolescents identified 3 distinct dimensions of the same components of MA found in the adult population: i) identifying; ii) processing; iii) expressing emotions. The subscales showed excellent internal consistency. Study 2 (involving a subsample of 288 participants) demonstrated good levels of construct and criterion validity. These results confirm that the B-MAS-A represents a valid and robust instrument for assessing the complex and multifaceted characteristics of MA in adolescents. The B-MAS-A can make a significant contribution to clinical practice and research and encourage systematic studies on MA in psychotherapy, taking into account the developmental stage of adolescence.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the opinions of parents with children diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder about genetic tests. A total of 540 parents living in Turkey participated in the study face-to-face and online. A questionnaire form prepared by the researchers was used as the data collection instrument. Face-to-face data were collected in different institutions in the cities of İzmir, Bursa and Antalya, while online data were collected through Google Forms. The results revealed that parents' views on genetic testing differed according to the sex and age of the child, as well as the parents' level of education and income, and whether the parents had genetic testing during pregnancy (p < 0.05). In the analysis, it was determined that parents' knowledge and awareness levels about genetic tests were generally low, while parents who reported that they would consider having genetic tests had concerns about the storage of their DNA materials, family conflicts that could be caused by genetic tests, and the compatibility of genetic tests with their religious beliefs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leveraging a large nationwide study of Icelandic women, we aimed to narrow the evidence gap around female attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and cardiometabolic comorbidities by determining the prevalence of obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases among women with ADHD and examine the association between cardiometabolic conditions and co-occurring ADHD with anxiety and mood disorders, alcoholism/substance use disorder (SUD), self-harm, and suicide attempts. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the nationwide, all-female, population-based SAGA Cohort Study (n = 26,668). To ascertain diagnoses and symptoms, we used self-reported history of ADHD diagnoses, selected cardiometabolic conditions and psychiatric disorders, and measured current depressive, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms through appropriate questionnaires (PHQ-9, GAD-7, and PCL-5). We calculated age-adjusted prevalences of cardiometabolic conditions by women's ADHD status and estimated adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), using modified Poisson regression models. Similarly, we assessed the association of cardiometabolic conditions and co-occurring ADHD with current psychiatric symptoms and psychiatric disorders, using adjusted PRs and 95% CIs. RESULTS We identified 2299 (8.6%) women with a history of ADHD diagnosis. The age-adjusted prevalence of having at least one cardiometabolic condition was higher among women with ADHD (49.5%) than those without (41.7%), (PR = 1.19, 95% CI 1.14-1.25), with higher prevalence of all measured cardiometabolic conditions (myocardial infarctions (PR = 2.53, 95% CI 1.83--3.49), type 2 diabetes (PR = 2.08, 95% CI 1.66-2.61), hypertension (PR = 1.23, 95% CI 1.12-1.34), and obesity (PR = 1.18, 95% CI 1.11-1.25)). Women with cardiometabolic conditions and co-occurring ADHD had, compared with those without ADHD, substantially increased prevalence of (a) all measured mood and anxiety disorders, e.g., depression (PR = 2.38, 95% CI 2.19-2.58), bipolar disorder (PR = 4.81, 95% CI 3.65-6.35), posttraumatic stress disorder (PR = 2.78, 95% CI 2.52-3.07), social phobia (PR = 2.96, 95% CI 2.64-3.32); (b) moderate/severe depressive, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms with PR = 1.76 (95% CI 1.67-1.85), PR = 1.97 (95% CI 1.82-2.12), and PR = 2.01 (95% CI 1.88-2.15), respectively; (c) alcoholism/SUD, PR = 4.79 (95% CI 3.90-5.89); and (d) self-harm, PR = 1.47 (95% CI 1.29-1.67) and suicide attempts, PR = 2.37 (95% CI 2.05-2.73). CONCLUSIONS ADHD is overrepresented among women with cardiometabolic conditions and contributes substantially to other psychiatric comorbidities among women with cardiometabolic conditions.

Abstract
The present study sought to identify differences in the rates and predictors of risky sexual behavior among college students with and without attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Current ADHD diagnosis, medication status among those with ADHD, executive functioning, substance use, comorbid anxiety, comorbid depression, and gender were identified as potential predictors of increased risky sexual behavior. Multiple group latent growth curve modeling was used to estimate trajectories of risky sexual behavior across four years of college among college students with ADHD (nmedicated = 99, nunmedicated = 105) and a comparison group (n = 217) recruited from colleges throughout the eastern United States (M age = 18.23 years, 53% female, 70% White). First-year college students with ADHD reported significantly higher rates of sexual risk behavior than their peers without ADHD, with no significant differences found based on medication status. Students with ADHD who were taking medication for ADHD reported significant decreases in risky sexual behavior over time. Among college students with ADHD, anxiety was related to increased current risky sexual behavior in the medicated group, while depression was predictive of decreased future risky sexual behavior in the unmedicated group. Alcohol and cannabis use were significantly associated with increased mean levels of risky sexual behavior across all three groups, and cannabis use was associated with decreased future risky sexual behavior within the comparison group. Executive functioning deficits and male gender were predictive of risky sexual behavior within the comparison group. The results demonstrate that college students with ADHD, regardless of medication status, are at an increased likelihood of engaging in risky sexual behavior.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the persistence of dimensional measures of inattention in a population-based, gender-balanced sample of adolescents with parent reports of inattention from childhood and self-reports of inattention in adolescence. METHOD Adolescents, 16-19 years old, completed the Adult ADHD Self Report Scale. Their parents completed the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Rating Scale-4th Edition when they were 7-9 and 11-13 years old. RESULTS More severe inattention in boys than girls in childhood shifted to a female predominance in adolescence. The correlation between reports of inattention in childhood and adolescence was weak, with parent reports explaining only ~5% of the variance in the inattention score reported in adolescence. CONCLUSION The weak association between inattention in childhood and adolescence is consistent with the emerging challenges associated with being an adolescent, but the impact of shifts in informants, gender and age on symtpom presentations should be investigated in future studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine criminal justice system (CJS) interactions and pathways through the justice system for young adults with ADHD compared to young adults without ADHD. METHOD Nationwide 3-year birth cohort study using linked health and CJS data. Cox proportional hazards models were employed to examine associations between ADHD and police proceedings, court charges, court convictions, and incarcerations. RESULTS Young adults with ADHD were significantly more likely to interact with the CJS including police proceedings (hazard ratio [HR], 2.1 95% CI [2.0, 2.2]) court charges (HR, 2.2 95% CI [2.1, 2.3]), court convictions (HR, 2.3 95% CI [2.2, 2.4]), and incarceration (HR, 4.8 95% CI [4.3, 5.4]). CONCLUSIONS Young adults with ADHD are overrepresented at all stages of the CJS. Results highlight the importance of early identification and responsivity to ADHD within the CJS and suggest that the NZ justice system may require changes to both areas to ensure that young individuals with ADHD receive equitable access to, and treatment within, the CJS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this article was to provide an overview of the development and recommendations from the Australian evidence-based clinical practice guideline for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The guideline aims to promote accurate and timely identification and diagnosis, and optimal and consistent treatment of ADHD. METHODS Development integrated the best available evidence with multidisciplinary clinical expertise and the preferences of those with lived experience, underpinned by the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) framework. The 23 guideline development group members included psychiatrists, paediatricians, general practitioners, psychologists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, educators, Indigenous psychologists, and people with a lived experience; with two independent chairs and a methodologist. Where appropriate, evidence reviews from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) 2018 'Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Diagnosis and Management' guideline were updated. Fifty prioritised clinical questions were addressed in 14 systematic reviews (new and updated from NICE 2018) and 28 narrative reviews. RESULTS The 113 clinical recommendations apply to young children (5 years and under), children, adolescents and adults. They provide guidance for clinicians on identification, screening, diagnosis, multimodal treatment and support, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. The guideline and supporting information are available online: https://adhdguideline.aadpa.com.au/. CONCLUSIONS The guideline was approved by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia and relevant medical and allied health professional associations. It is anticipated that successful implementation and uptake of the guideline by organisations, health care providers and other professionals will increase delivery of evidence-based treatment and improve health outcomes for the more than 800,000 Australians with ADHD.

Abstract
Background In some observational studies, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder has been linked to allergic diseases, but the findings are debatable. This study aimed to determine whether attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is causally related to allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, pollen allergy, allergic urticaria, and allergic conjunctivitis using the two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) approach. Methods We did a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study, which chose single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are highly associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) levels from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) on 20,183 cases and 35,191 controls as our instruments. Outcomes datasets included genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis (n = 1,415,804). The summary statistics of outcome data were obtained from the FinnGen datasets including allergic asthma (10,877 cases and 180,942 controls), allergic rhinitis (8,430 cases and 298,829 controls), pollen allergy (4555cases and 301,734 controls), allergic urticaria (1792 cases and 299,491 controls) and allergic conjunctivitis (15,567 cases and 293,587 controls). Inverse variance weighted, MR-Egger, weighted median, were used to estimate the causal association between ADHD and allergic diseases. Cochran's Q test was used to quantify the heterogeneity of instrumental variables. MR-Egger intercept test, leave-one-out analysis, and the funnel plot were all used in sensitivity analyses. Results The Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis indicated that ADHD in inverse variance weighted [odds ratio (OR) = 1.0612; 95% confidence interval (CI):1.0192-1.1049; p = 0.0039] lightly increased the risk of allergic asthma. In MR sensitivity analyses of the weighted median, a similar association was found. But no evidence for an effect of ADHD on allergic asthma risk was found in additional methods: MR-Egger (OR = 0.9592, 95% CI: 0.8384-1.0974, p = 0.5457), and weighted median (OR: =1.0341, 95% CI: 0.9785-1.0929, p = 0.2330). Also, no strong evidence for an effect of ADHD on other allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis, pollen allergy, allergic urticaria, and allergic conjunctivitis) incidence was found using the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, weighted median method, and MR-Egger regression. Conclusion Although several studies have found a link between ADHD and allergic diseases, our findings do not support that ADHD could increase allergic diseases incidence. Randomized controlled trials or Mendelian randomization studies with larger samples are still needed to draw more precise conclusions.

Abstract
Psychopathology is a process: it unfolds over time and involves several different factors. To extend our knowledge of such process, it is vital to understand the trajectories that lead to developing and maintaining a specific disorder. The construct of continuity appears very useful to this aim. It refers to the consistency, similarity, and predictability of behaviors or internal states across different developmental phases. This paper aims to present a narrative review of the literature on homotypic and heterotypic continuity of psychopathology across the lifespan. A detailed search of the published literature was conducted using the PsycINFO Record and Medline (PubMed) databases. Articles were included in the review based on the following criteria: (1) publication dates ranging from January 1970 to October 2022; and (2) articles being written in the English language. To ensure a thorough investigation, multiple combinations of keywords such as "continuity," "psychopathology," "infancy," "childhood," "adolescence," "adulthood," "homotypic," and "heterotypic" were used. Articles were excluded if exclusively focused on epidemiologic data and if not specifically addressing the topic of psychopathology continuity. The literature yielded a total of 36 longitudinal studies and an additional 190 articles, spanning the research published between 1970 and 2022. Studies on continuity focus on the etiology of different forms of mental disorders and may represent a fundamental resource from both a theoretical and clinical perspective. Enhancing our understanding of the different trajectories beneath psychopathology may allow clinicians to implement more effective strategies, focusing both on prevention and intervention. Since literature highlights the importance of early detection of clinical signs of psychopathology, future research should focus more on infancy and pre-scholar age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is known to be a risk factor for antisocial and delinquent behaviour, but there is still a lack of information on how features of ADHD relate to offending behaviour among adults not already defined by their offending. AIMS Our aim was to add to knowledge about relationships between ADHD and antisocial behaviour among adults in the general population by answering the following questions: (A) Does the level of self-reported ADHD features relate to criminal and non-criminal antisocial behaviour? (B) To what extent are self-ratings of ADHD features independent of socio-demographic features previously identified as predictors of antisocial behaviour? METHODS A sample of adults was originally recruited to study public response to the COVID-19 outbreak through an online panel to be representative of the Israeli population. Among other scales, the 2025 participants completed an ADHD self-report scale, an antisocial behaviour self-report scale and a socio-demographic questionnaire probing for age, gender, urbanity, place of birth, socioeconomic status (education and income), family status (being in a relationship and having children) and religiosity. RESULTS Higher mean totals for the inattention and hyperactivity ADHD scale scores were associated with higher mean antisocial behaviour scores. These relationships were only slightly affected by socio-demographic variables, including sex, age, education and income. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that not only may features of ADHD, even below a diagnostic threshold, constitute a risk factor for antisocial behaviour, but also that the self-rated levels of these problems covary. These findings are important for informing the early detection of risk of antisocial behaviour in the general population and its prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies using self-reports indicate that individuals with ADHD are at increased risk for functional impairments in social and occupational settings, but evidence around real-life instability remains limited. It is furthermore unclear if these functional impairments in ADHD differ across sex and across the adult lifespan. METHOD A longitudinal observational cohort design of 3,448,440 individuals was used to study the associations between ADHD and residential moves, relational instability and job shifting using data from Swedish national registers. Data were stratified on sex and age (18-29 years, 30-39 years, and 40-52 years at start of follow up). RESULTS 31,081 individuals (17,088 males; 13,993 females) in the total cohort had an ADHD-diagnosis. Individuals with ADHD had an increased incidence rate ratio (IRR) of residential moves (IRR 2.35 [95% CI, 2.32-2.37]), relational instability (IRR = 1.07 [95% CI, 1.06-1.08]) and job shifting (IRR = 1.03 [95% CI, 1.02-1.04]). These associations tended to increase with increasing age. The strongest associations were found in the oldest group (40-52 years at start of follow). Women with ADHD in all three age groups had a higher rate of relational instability compared to men with ADHD. CONCLUSION Both men and women with a diagnosis of ADHD present with an increased risk of real-life instability in different domains and this behavioral pattern was not limited to young adulthood but also existed well into older adulthood. It is therefore important to have a lifespan perspective on ADHD for individuals, relatives, and the health care sector.

Abstract
Based on the network theory of mental disorders, this study used network analysis to examine the network of ODD symptoms and multilevel family factors and identify the most crucial family factors influencing ODD symptoms in children. A total of 718 Chinese migrant children aged 7-14 years participated in this study. This study measured ODD symptoms, family system-level variables (3 factors), family dyadic-level variables (6 factors), and family individual-level variables (6 factors) with factors selected based on the multilevel family factors theory of ODD symptoms. The results indicated that (1) "annoy" was the center symptom of ODD, (2) "annoy" and "vindictive" was the main bridge connecting the multilevel family factors, and (3) family cohesion at the family system level, parent-child conflict at the family dyadic level, and parental depression at the family individual level were critical central and bridging influencing factors. The findings of this study highlight the critical role of "annoy" and "vindictive" symptoms in the activation of ODD symptom networks in children and provide a basis for future improvements in diagnostic criteria. These potential core and bridge factors might become key intervention targets for childhood ODD.

Abstract
Knowledge on psychiatric comorbidity in adult ADHD is essential for prevention, detection, and treatment of these conditions. This review (1) focuses on large studies (n> 10,000; surveys, claims data, population registries) to identify (a) overall, (b) sex- and (c) age-specific patterns of comorbidity of anxiety disorders (ADs), major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) in adults with ADHD relative to adults without ADHD; and (2) describes methodological challenges relating to establishing comorbidity in ADHD in adults as well as priorities for future research. Meta-analyses (ADHD: n=550,748; no ADHD n=14,546,814) yielded pooled odds ratios of 5.0(CI:3.29-7.46) for AD, 4.5(CI:2.44-8.34) for MDD, 8.7(CI:5.47-13.89) for BD and 4.6(CI:2.72-7.80) for SUDs, indicating strong differences in adults with compared to adults without ADHD. Moderation by sex was not found: high comorbidity held for both men and women with sex-specific patterns as in the general population: higher prevalences of ADs, MDD and BD in women and a higher prevalence of SUDs in men. Insufficient data on different phases of the adult lifespan prevented conclusions on developmental changes in comorbidity. We discuss methodological challenges, knowledge gaps, and future research priorities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioral disorder which is best treated through a combination of medication and behavioral therapy, with stimulant medications serving as a first-line treatment approach. Serdexmethylphenidate (SDX), a prodrug of dexmethylphenidate (d-MPH), a commonly utilized stimulant medication, has recently received approval and is marketed in the U.S.A. AREAS COVERED This review summarizes peer-reviewed literature on SDX published between 2021-2023 and a review of data available from ClinicalTrials.gov. EXPERT OPINION SDX represents a new option for treatment for ADHD. It is unique in its prodrug design and achieves a relatively extended duration of action in comparison to other stimulant formulations. Although the research is relatively limited thus far, early data suggests it to be a safe medication to consider with side effects being similar to other stimulant medications. Its prodrug design is useful in potentially serving as a deterrent to intentional parenteral abuse and its ability to be opened and sprinkled makes it an option for those individuals with ADHD who might be unable to swallow pills.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of PDs according to Millon's evolution-based model among adult ADHD outpatients. METHOD Cross-sectional study of consecutive patients referred to an adult ADHD clinic. PDs were evaluated with Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III (MCMI-III). RESULTS One-hundred-eighty-one participants had valid MCMI-III, of whom147 were diagnosed with ADHD. Mean age: 32.97, SD:11.56, females: 74 (50.3%). Among the 147 participants with ADHD, 29 (19.7%) did not meet criteria for any PD, 43 (29.3%) met the criteria for one PD, 34 (23.1%) for two PDs and the rest three or more. Most common PD was Dependent (n = 58) followed by Depressive (n = 45). Inattentive sub-type was associated with dependent PD, while combined type with antisocial, negativistic (passive/aggressive) and sadistic PD. CONCLUSION Particular personality profiles were more common with different ADHD subtypes. Given the developmental origins of PD, further research may help identify possible links with childhood difficulties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We tested the hypotheses that (1) a diagnosis of ADHD in childhood or adolescence is associated with reduced quality of life (QoL) and everyday functioning in emerging adulthood, and (2) executive function (EF) deficits, internalizing difficulties, and ADHD symptoms predict reduced QoL and more functional impairments. METHOD We assessed 85 children and adolescents with ADHD and 50 typically developing (TD) peers at baseline (Mage = 11.6 years, 58% males), 2-year follow-up, and 10-year follow-up with neuropsychological tests of EF and self-reports. RESULTS Individuals with ADHD reported lower QoL and functional impairments in emerging adulthood compared to TD peers. More internalizing difficulties and ADHD symptoms at baseline and 2-year follow-up significantly predicted lower QoL and more functional impairments at the 10-year follow-up. CONCLUSION ADHD and internalizing difficulties in childhood or adolescence have a negative impact on QoL and everyday functioning in emerging adulthood.

Abstract
The increasing rates at which psychotropic drugs have been prescribed to children and adolescents in the USA in the last three decades (since the early 1990s) have prompted questions about whether this trend is associated with the "great American crime decline." Medicalization can be considered one of the strategies to remedy children's neuropsychological deficits and improve their self-control. Another possible remedy is school-based services for children with learning disabilities, mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) of 2004. Using state-level panel data analyses for years 1990-2014 (with the main focus on 2000-2014 outcomes), the current study estimates associations between these two developmental self-control remedies-medicalization and school-based services-and minor, moderate, and severe types of juvenile violence, while controlling for relevant covariates (both time-varying and time-invariant). The results of mixed-effects linear regression analyses accounting for powerful time trends show a strong association between increases in school-based services for children with learning disabilities and declines in all types of juvenile violence. Another strong and consistent finding that emerges in the analyses is the link between reductions in child poverty at the state level and decreases in juvenile violence, both contemporaneously and over time. Psychotropic drug prescribing to children (measured using Supplemental Security Income rolls of children with mental health conditions) exhibits inconsistent or insignificant effects. The findings of this study have substantial theoretical and policy implications and indicate the importance of strengthening school-based services for children with disabilities and reducing child poverty as essential violence prevention tools.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurobehavioral condition in children. Current guidelines recommend that Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-V) criteria be met before diagnosing ADHD. However, 14-49% of providers are not documenting the use of DSM-V criteria in screening and diagnosis. The use of a standardized electronic health record (EHR) ADHD template is a potential option to assist providers with documenting the DSM-V criteria. The aim for this project was to provide a 1-hour educational in-service on the use of the DSM-V criteria, Vanderbilt rating scale, and a revised EHR ADHD template, and to assess provider use pre and post intervention. Results showed that few providers (n = 1; 2%) document using DSM-V criteria preintervention and post intervention with only a modest increase in template use (n = 3; 5%). However, there were statistical differences between provider type with advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants screening more frequently using the EHR DSM-V ADHD template compared with physicians (p = .009). Future studies are needed to evaluate barriers to use, including practice preference, openness to change, and other factors that may affect provider workflow.

This article is intended for use among all cystic fibrosis care team members. It covers common mental health concerns and their unique presentations in persons with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) in areas such as depression, anxiety, trauma, behavioral disorders emerging in childhood, sleep, problematic eating patterns, and the impact of substance use. Furthermore, the authors address ways to manage these mental health symptoms through risk assessment, psychological interventions, and/or psychotropic medications. Quick reference tables are provided for evidence-based psychological interventions and medications often used for mental health conditions in pwCF.

Abstract
Numerous studies have established the link between ADHD and antisocial behavior, one of the most serious functional impairments caused by the disorder. However, research on protective factors that mitigate this link is still lacking. The Salutogenic Model of Health offers the “Sense of Coherence” (SOC), establishing that individuals who see their lives as logical, meaningful, and manageable are more resistant to various risk factors and diseases. The present study examines for the first time whether SOC is also a protective factor against different ADHD-related types of antisocial behaviors (severe/mild violent behavior, verbal violence, property crimes, public disorder, and drug abuse). A total of 3180 participants aged 15−50 completed online questionnaires assessing the level of ADHD symptoms, antisocial behaviors, and SOC. Structural equation modeling was applied to examine the research hypothesis. An interaction between ADHD symptoms and SOC was found in predicting each type of antisocial behavior (beta = −0.06−−0.17, p < 0.01). The link between ADHD symptoms and antisocial behavior was significantly weaker for high than low SOC participants, regardless of age group. The current study found that people with high SOC are protected against the effect of ADHD symptoms on one of the most serious functional impairments, antisocial behavior. These findings suggest that SOC is a protective factor from the adverse effects of ADHD symptoms, justifying further prospective and intervention studies.

Abstract
Although functional impairment is required for a diagnosis in the DSM 5, the time frame and definition of functional impairment is ambiguous. We present a conceptual review clarifying the difference between functional impairment as a stable trait representing strength or disability in various domains, and functional impairment as secondary to emotional or behavior problems, which is a state sensitive to change with treatment intervention. Functional impairment as a measure of treatment outcome includes both change from baseline and status at the endpoint of treatment. When using a validated measure of function, functional improvement can be defined as the percentage of patients who achieve the Minimal Important Clinical Difference (MCID) and functional remission as the percentage of patients who normalize at treatment endpoint. True treatment remission should be defined as both symptomatic and functional remission.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder. Many previous studies have shown that the comorbid status of disruptive behaviour disorders (DBD) was a predictor for ADHD persistence into adulthood. However, the brain mechanisms underlying such a relationship remain unclear. Thus, we aim to investigate whether the brain functional alteration in adults with ADHD could also be detected in children with ADHD co-occurring with disruptive behaviours from both quantitative and categorical dimensions. METHODS A total of 172 children with ADHD (cADHD), 98 adults with ADHD (aADHD), 77 healthy control children (cHC) and 40 healthy control adults (aHC) were recruited. The whole-brain spontaneous fluctuations in brain activity of each participant were recorded using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and the functional connectivities (FCs) were calculated. We first compared the FC differences between aADHD and aHC. Then, for the regions with significantly abnormal FCs in aADHD, we further compared these features between cADHD and cHC. In addition, the correlation between these FCs and the conduct disorder (CD)/oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms were analysed in cADHD. Moreover, to render the results readily interpretable, we compared the FC differences among ADHDCD-, subthreshold ADHDCD+ and cHC groups, and among ADHDODD-, ADHDODD+ and cHC groups. Finally, we repeated the above analysis after controlling for other comorbidities and core symptoms to diminish the potential confounding effects. RESULTS We found that compared with aHC, aADHD showed significantly increased FCs in the VN, DMN, SMN, and DAN. The aforementioned abnormal FCs were also detected in cADHD, however, in an opposite orientation. Notably, these abnormal FCs were positively correlated with CD symptoms. Finally, the subthreshold ADHDCD+ group even exhibited a tendency of adult-like increased FCs compared with the cHC. The results held after controlling for other comorbidities and core symptoms. CONCLUSION This study provides functional neuroimaging evidence that CD might be a risk factor for ADHD persistence into adulthood. Our work highlights the importance of differentiating ADHDCD+ from ADHD and inspiring further understanding of brain development in ADHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescence is associated with functional impairment in several domains of life. To enable development of interventions that more effectively target functional impairment in this age group, the associations between clinical characteristics and impairment need to be clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between ADHD and functional impairment, if they varied by sex, and the potential impact of comorbid psychiatric symptoms on the associations. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study including adolescents with ADHD (n = 164) and a reference group of adolescents without ADHD (n = 106). Self-ratings and parental ratings of functional impairment in different life domains were used as outcomes in all analyses. Differences between groups were investigated with comparative analyses. General linear models (GLMs) were used to explore associations between ADHD symptoms and functional impairment in adolescents with ADHD, while adjusting for of comorbid symptoms, sex, and medication. RESULTS Adolescents with ADHD displayed higher levels of functional impairment than peers without ADHD, and girls with ADHD rated higher impairment than their male counterparts. The combined ADHD presentation was associated with the highest levels of self-reported impairment, while parental ratings indicated comparable levels of overall impairment across presentations. In the adjusted GLMs, symptoms of inattention were strongly associated with self- and parent-rated impairment in school, but symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity were not, whereas symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity were modestly associated with self-rated impairment with friends. Further, both emotional and conduct problems were associated with impairment in daily life. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that attention difficulties, in particular, seem to impair academic functioning in adolescents with ADHD, and interventions targeting such difficulties are warranted. In addition, comorbid symptoms need to be assessed and treated, and self-reports of functioning should be included in research and clinical practice involving adolescents.

Abstract
In this issue of the Journal, Cherkasova et al.1 provide a unique synthesis of 7 prospective longitudinal cohorts of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), all followed into adult life. The authors focus on a diverse range of outcome domains: educational performance, occupational/economic functioning, mental health, physical health, substance use, antisocial behavior, and driving. These not only are important for the quality of life and well-being of people with ADHD, but also have implications for health service use and the wider economic impact on society. Each cohort on its own has already provided significant insights into the course of ADHD and played a key role in our current understanding of the condition. All cohorts have a long follow-up period-in the New York cohort, 33 years after initial evaluation and well into mid-adulthood. The retention rates are impressive, ranging from 60% to 94%. All cohorts employ a comparison group, which is essential in interpreting the reported outcomes. In bringing together the 7 cohorts, the authors present a clear consensus that people with ADHD are at high risk of adverse outcomes in all functional domains. ADHD is considered by some experts to be one of the mental health conditions most responsive to intervention, and, as such, these findings challenge our management of the condition and mandate future research to improve outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with single ventricle heart disease are living into adulthood due to medical and surgical advancements but have significant physical comorbidities and an increased risk for psychological comorbidities compared to healthy subjects or those with other CHD diagnoses. This study aimed to systematically review psychological functioning in paediatric single ventricle heart disease. METHODS Literature was searched using PubMed, Embase, PsycInfo, CINAHL Complete and Scopus. Peer-reviewed articles that included patients ages 0-25 years with single ventricle heart disease, and quantitative measures of psychological outcomes were included. Meta-analysis using a fixed-effect model was conducted for internalising and externalising t-scores, utilised by the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist. RESULTS Twenty-nine records met the criteria for inclusion. 13/24 studies demonstrated increased risk for internalising disorders, such as anxiety/depression; 16/22 studies demonstrated risk for externalising disorders, such as attention or behavioural problems. Meta-analysis of four studies revealed that paediatric single ventricle heart disease patients had no significant difference in internalising and externalising t-scores compared to normative values. CONCLUSIONS The current review demonstrates the need for further studies to better understand psychological functioning in patients with single ventricle heart disease, with a majority of studies showing increased risk for psychological problems despite no difference seen in a small meta-analysis. This summary of the literature underscores the need for regular psychological screening, earlier intervention and integrated mental health therapies in paediatric single ventricle heart disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide a comprehensive evaluation of the economic burden associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among children and adolescents from a US societal perspective. MATERIALS AND METHODS Direct healthcare costs of children (5-11 years) and adolescents (12-17 years) with ADHD were obtained using claims data from the IBM MarketScan Research Databases (01/01/2017-12/31/2018). Direct non-healthcare and indirect costs were estimated based on literature and government publications. Each cost component was estimated using a prevalence-based approach, with per-patient costs extrapolated to the national level. RESULTS The total annual societal excess costs associated with ADHD were estimated at $19.4 billion among children ($6,799 per child) and $13.8 billion among adolescents ($8,349 per adolescent). Education costs contributed to approximately half of the total excess costs in both populations ($11.6 billion [59.9%] in children; $6.7 billion [48.8%] in adolescents). Other major contributors to the overall burden were direct healthcare costs ($5.0 billion [25.9%] in children; $4.0 billion [29.0%] in adolescents) and caregiving costs ($2.7 billion [14.1%] in children; $1.6 billion [11.5%] in adolescents). LIMITATIONS Cost estimates were calculated based on available literature and/or governmental publications due to the absence of a single data source for all costs associated with ADHD. Thus, the quality of cost estimates is limited by the accuracy of available data as well as the study populations and methodologies used by different studies. CONCLUSION ADHD in children and adolescents is associated with a substantial economic burden that is largely driven by education costs, followed by direct healthcare costs and caregiver costs. Improved intervention strategies and policies may reduce the clinical and economic burden of ADHD in these populations.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent and serious neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. Chronic and childhood stress is involved in ADHD development, and ADHD is highly comorbid with anxiety. Similarly, inflammatory diseases and a pro-inflammatory state have been associated with ADHD. However, while several works have studied the relationship between peripheral inflammation and stress in affective disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder, fewer have explored this association in ADHD. In this narrative review we synthetize evidence showing an interplay between stress, anxiety, and immune dysregulation in ADHD, and we discuss the implications of a potential disrupted neuroendocrine stress response in ADHD. Moreover, we highlight confounding factors and limitations of existing studies on this topic and critically debate multidirectional hypotheses that either suggest inflammation, stress, or anxiety as a cause in ADHD pathophysiology or inflammation as a consequence of this disease. Untangling these relationships will have diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic implications for ADHD patients.
