Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Because nutrition plays a crucial role in the development of chronic diseases, ensuring nutrition security is important for promoting population health. Nutrition security is defined as having consistent and equitable access to healthy, safe, affordable foods essential to optimal health and well-being. Distinguished from food security, nutrition security consists of two constructs: healthy diets and nutritional status. The study aimed to identify population measures that reflect the important constructs of nutrition security (i.e., healthy diets and nutritional status) to inform U.S. nutrition security assessment and monitoring. RECENT FINDINGS Through a narrative review conducted across multiple databases, associations between subconstructs of healthy diets and nutritional status were identified. Of the six subconstructs that constitute healthy diets, nutrient adequacy and moderation were most often used to assess and monitor healthfulness of U.S. population diets and were associated with health outcomes. There is little evidence of an association between health outcomes and macronutrient balance or diversity in the U.S. Thirteen instruments were identified as potentially suitable for measuring at least one subconstruct of healthy diet in the population. This review highlights the importance of nutrition security in addressing population health challenges. It emphasizes the potential use of multiple instruments and measures to comprehensively monitor population nutrition security and inform intervention strategies. Identifying feasible and practical measures for assessing and monitoring nutrition security is imperative for advancing population health and mitigating the burden of chronic diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since cardiovascular disease (CVD) stands as the primary cause of death in those with diabetes, and given the substantial influence of obesity as a common risk factor for both diabetes and atherosclerotic conditions, this investigation sought to find the relationship between anthropometric indicators and CVD risk within these populations. METHODS Our study examined 36,329 adults, including those with diagnosed diabetes, pre-diabetes, and without diabetes from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data spanning 1999 to 2018. Various anthropometric indicators such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, weight-adjusted waist index (WWI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), weight, and height were assessed. Baseline characteristics were compared among the three groups after weighting. Participants were then grouped based on anthropometric indicators, and logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between these indicators and CVD risk in the total diabetes group (including diabetic and pre-diabetic individuals). Threshold effect analysis was conducted to explore nonlinear relationships, and mediation analyses assessed whether serum parameters influenced these relationships. RESULTS This cross-sectional study involved 36,329 participants, weighted to a count of approximately 160.9 million, including over 45.9 million pre-diabetic individuals and around 16.6 million diabetic individuals. Baseline analysis showed significant associations between all six anthropometric indicators and CVD risk across patients with different diabetes statuses. Weighted restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve analysis highlighted increased CVD risk among the total diabetes group for each anthropometric indicator compared to the non-diabetic group. Anthropometric indicators were then divided into quartiles, and after adjusting for confounders, Model 3 revealed that the highest BMI group had a heightened risk of CVD compared to the lowest BMI group. Similar trends were observed in the WWI and WHtR subgroups. Threshold effect analysis of anthropometric indicators unveiled nonlinear associations between waist circumference, height, WWI and CVD risk. Mediation analysis suggested that lipid parameters, especially HDL, significantly mediated these relationships. CONCLUSION In individuals with diabetes and pre-diabetes, BMI, weight, and WHtR displayed a consistent, linear increase correlation with CVD risk. Conversely, the link between waist circumference, height, and WWI and CVD risk showcased a more complex, nonlinear pattern. Moreover, HDL level emerged as notable mediator in the association between anthropometric indicators and the risk of CVD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Central obesity poses significant health risks because it increases susceptibility to multiple chronic diseases. Epigenetic features such as DNA methylation may be associated with specific obesity traits, which could help us understand how genetic and environmental factors interact to influence the development of obesity. This study aims to identify DNA methylation sites associated with the waist circumference (WC) in Northern Han Chinese population, and to elucidate potential causal relationships. METHODS A total of 59 pairs of WC discordant monozygotic twins (ΔWC >0) were selected from the Qingdao Twin Registry in China. Generalized estimated equation model was employed to estimate the methylation levels of CpG sites on WC. Causal relationships between methylation and WC were assessed through the examination of family confounding factors using FAmiliaL CONfounding (ICE FALCON). Additionally, the findings of the epigenome-wide analysis were corroborated in the validation stage. RESULTS We identified 26 CpG sites with differential methylation reached false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.05 and 22 differentially methylated regions (slk-corrected p < 0.05) strongly linked to WC. These findings provided annotations for 26 genes, with notable emphasis on MMP17, ITGA11, COL23A1, TFPI, A2ML1-AS1, MRGPRE, C2orf82, and NINJ2. ICE FALCON analysis indicated the DNA methylation of ITGA11 and TFPI had a causal effect on WC and vice versa (p < 0.05). Subsequent validation analysis successfully replicated 10 (p < 0.05) out of the 26 identified sites. CONCLUSIONS Our research has ascertained an association between specific epigenetic variations and WC in the Northern Han Chinese population. These DNA methylation features can offer fresh insights into the epigenetic regulation of obesity and WC as well as hints to plausible biological mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Angina pectoris, a debilitating manifestation of coronary artery disease, has been associated with various modifiable risk factors. However, the causal underpinnings of these associations remain unclear. This study leveraged Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the causal roles of dietary patterns, smoking behaviors, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity in the development of angina. METHODS Two-sample MR analyses were performed using summary-level data from large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs) and biobank resources, including the UK Biobank (UKB) and FinnGen cohorts. Genetic variants associated with various types of exposure such as fruit and salad intake, smoking initiation and intensity, BMI, and physical activity were used as instrumental variables, and their causal effects on angina risk were assessed. RESULTS In the UKB cohort (336,683 individuals, 10,618 cases), genetically proxied fruit (OR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.93-0.97) and cheese intake (OR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.97-0.99) were associated with decreased angina risk, while smoking initiation (OR = 1.01, 95% CI: 1.002-1.012), maternal smoking (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.03-1.09), and BMI (OR = 1.01, 95% CI: 1.01-1.02) were associated with increased risk. In the FinnGen cohort (206,008 individuals, 18,168 cases), fruit (OR = 0.30, 95% CI: 0.17-0.53) and salad intake (OR = 0.31, 95% CI: 0.12-0.55) were found to be protective, while smoking initiation (OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.04-1.37) and intensity (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04-1.26) and BMI (OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.18-1.47) increased angina risk. CONCLUSIONS This study provides robust evidence for the causal roles of various modifiable risk factors associated with angina development, highlighting the potential benefits of dietary interventions that promote increased fruit and vegetable consumption, smoking cessation, and weight management to mitigate angina risk. Further investigation is needed to generalize these findings to populations with diverse genetic backgrounds, lifestyles, and environmental exposures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension development is predominantly influenced by inflammation, excessive fat deposition, and metabolic irregularities. Among these factors, liver fat accumulation is a critical metabolic disorder. However, the quantification of liver fat levels and its associated risk for hypertension incidence remain ambiguous. This project is designed to explore the association between liver fat levels and the risk of hypertension in a healthy population. METHODS This cross-sectional study involved 4955 participants from the Health Management Center at Henan Provincial People's Hospital who were surveyed between February 2020 and February 2023. Participants were categorized into four groups based on liver fat quartiles. Subgroup analyses, restricted cubic spline regression models, and logistic regression were utilized to assess the association between liver fat levels and hypertension risk. The relationships between liver fat levels and inflammatory markers were examined using multiple linear regression models. Additionally, a mediation analysis was conducted to explore the role of inflammatory factors in the relationship between liver fat and hypertension risk. RESULTS Participants with hypertension exhibited greater liver fat levels than did those without hypertension. An increased risk of hypertension was associated with elevated liver fat levels, even after adjusting for other covariates [Q4 vs. Q1 in model II: odds ratio (OR = 1.28), 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.04-1.59, P = 0.022; P for trend = 0.039]. A nonlinear relationship was observed between liver fat level and hypertension risk, with a notable increase in hypertension risk occurring at liver fat levels greater than 8.65%. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between inflammatory markers and liver fat levels. A mediation effect of 4.76% was noted, linking hypertension risk and liver fat levels through neutrophils. CONCLUSION Liver fat levels exceeding 8.65% significantly elevated the risk of hypertension. Inflammatory factors serve as crucial mediators of the relationship between liver fat and hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition often manifests as a body weight (BW) reduction and unhealthy alteration in body composition. The present study aimed to assess the efficacy of an oral nutritional supplement (ONS) in improving BW and body composition among older adults with malnutrition. METHODS An open-label randomised controlled, parallel-group study was conducted among older adults (age ≥ 60 years) with/at risk of malnutrition (mini nutrition assessment-short form score ≤ 11). In total, 50 participants were randomly assigned to the intervention (IG) and control (CG) groups (1:1 ratio). The IG received the ONS (57 g/day; 247 kcal/serving, 12 g protein) before bedtime for 12 weeks. CG received 200 mL of water. Anthropometric measurements, body composition analysis, and dietary and physical activity assessments were performed at the beginning and end of the study. RESULTS Forty-two participants (IG: 20, CG: 22) completed the study. The mean ± SD ages of the IG and CG were 75.4 ± 6.1 and 74.8 ± 5.2 years, respectively (p = 0.73). The IG had a significant increase in BW (+1.68 ± 1.16 vs. -0.46 ± 0.95 kg; p < 0.001), lean mass (+1.23 ± 0.93 vs. -0.45 ± 0.90 kg; p < 0.001) and fat mass (+0.54 ± 0.82 vs. -0.06 ± 0.82 kg; p = 0.02) compared to the CG. One-quarter of the IG (n = 5) achieved a weight gain > 5% of BW, whereas none in the CG did (p = 0.01). No significant changes were observed in bone mineral content in either group. CONCLUSIONS For malnourished older adults, supplementing with an ONS, along with regular food intake, significantly increased BW, lean mass and fat mass compared to control following the regular diet without supplementation.

Abstract
Importance Obesity, especially visceral obesity, is an established risk factor associated with all-cause mortality. However, the inadequacy of conventional anthropometric measures in assessing fat distribution necessitates a more comprehensive indicator, body roundness index (BRI), to decipher its population-based characteristics and potential association with mortality risk. Objective To evaluate the temporal trends of BRI among US noninstitutionalized civilian residents and explore its association with all-cause mortality. Design, Setting, and Participants For this cohort study, information on a nationally representative cohort of 32 995 US adults (age ≥20 years) was extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2018 and NHANES Linked Mortality File, with mortality ascertained through December 31, 2019. Data were analyzed between April 1 and September 30, 2023. Exposures Biennial weighted percentage changes in BRI were calculated. Restricted cubic spline curve was used to determine optimal cutoff points for BRI. Main Outcome and Measures The survival outcome was all-cause mortality. Mortality data were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website and linked to the NHANES database using the unique subject identifier. Weibull regression model was adopted to quantify the association between BRI and all-cause mortality. Results Among 32 995 US adults, the mean (SD) age was 46.74 (16.92) years, and 16 529 (50.10%) were women. Mean BRI increased gradually from 4.80 (95% CI, 4.62-4.97) to 5.62 (95% CI, 5.37-5.86) from 1999 through 2018, with a biennial change of 0.95% (95% CI, 0.80%-1.09%; P < .001), and this increasing trend was more obvious among women, elderly individuals, and individuals who identified as Mexican American. After a median (IQR) follow-up of 9.98 (5.33-14.33) years, 3452 deaths (10.46% of participants) from all causes occurred. There was a U-shaped association between BRI and all-cause mortality, with the risk increased by 25% (hazard ratio, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.05-1.47) for adults with BRI less than 3.4 and by 49% (hazard ratio, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.31-1.70) for those with BRI of 6.9 or greater compared with the middle quintile of BRI of 4.5 to 5.5 after full adjustment. Conclusions and Relevance This national cohort study found an increasing trend of BRI during nearly 20-year period among US adults, and importantly, a U-shaped association between BRI and all-cause mortality. These findings provide evidence for proposing BRI as a noninvasive screening tool for mortality risk estimation, an innovative concept that could be incorporated into public health practice pending consistent validation in other independent cohorts.

Clinical Outcomes in Metabolically Healthy and Unhealthy Obese and Overweight Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: Findings From the GLORIA-AF Registry. Mayo Clin Proc 2024; 99:927-939. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the association between metabolic status, body mass index (BMI), and natural history of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS The global, prospective GLORIA-AF Registry Phase II and III included patients with recent diagnosis of AF between November 2011 and December 2014 for Phase II and between January 2014 and December 2016 for Phase III. With this analysis, we categorized patients with AF according to BMI (normal weight [18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2], overweight [25.0 to 29.9 kg/m2], obese [30.0 to 60.0 kg/m2]) and metabolic status (presence of hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia). We analyzed risk of major outcomes using multivariable Cox regression analyses; the primary outcome was the composite of all-cause death and major adverse cardiovascular events. RESULTS There were 24,828 (mean age, 70.1±10.3 years; 44.6% female) patients with AF included. Higher BMI was associated with metabolically unhealthy status and higher odds of receiving oral anticoagulants and other treatments. Normal-weight unhealthy patients showed a higher risk of the primary composite outcome (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.20; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.42) and thromboembolism, whereas a lower risk of cardiovascular death (aHR, 0.35; 95% CI, 0.14 to 0.88) and major adverse cardiovascular events (aHR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.33 to 0.93) was observed in metabolically healthy obese individuals. Unhealthy metabolic groups were also associated with increased risk of major bleeding (aHR, 1.51 [95% CI, 1.04 to 2.20] and aHR, 1.96 [95% CI, 1.34 to 2.85] in overweight and obese groups, respectively). CONCLUSION Increasing BMI was associated with poor metabolic status and with more intensive treatment. Prognosis was heterogeneous between BMI groups, with metabolically unhealthy patients showing higher risk of adverse events.

Abstract
Central obesity is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness (ASATT) can be used to evaluate central obesity. The objective of this study was to compare ASATT with cardiovascular risk factors and other anthropometric parameters to show that ASATT can be a useful tool for the early assessment of heart disease risk. In this observational cross-sectional study, anthropometric measurements of 100 autopsied decedents, including waist circumference, hip circumference, waist/height and waist/hip ratio, aortic outlet and coronary artery atheroma plaque densities, heart weight, ventricular wall thickness, and ASATT, were assessed. The research data were evaluated using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences for Windows 25.0. The average ASATT of the male group was 40.36 mm (SD: 11.00), and the average of female cases was 46.34 mm (SD: 18.12). There was no statistically significant difference between the sexes and both age groups in terms of the ASATT score (P > .05). There was a positive correlation between ASATT and waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist/height ratio in both sexes (P < .05). While ASATT was not related to atheroma density in the coronary arteries of men (P > .05), it was correlated with atheroma density in all 3 coronary arteries of women (P < .05). In the male group, the aortic inner surface atheroma density was positively correlated with ASATT (P < .05). In both sexes, there was a positive correlation (P < .05) between ASATT and heart weight; however, no such correlation was observed with right and left ventricular wall thickness (P > .05). ASATT is related to other anthropometric measurements, atherosclerosis of critical vessels, and heart weight, and can be used to scan the patient population for heart disease risk assessment with noninvasive methods.

Abstract
Background: Obesity is a public health problem which prevalence has increased worldwide and is associated with different degrees of hemodynamic alterations and structural cardiac changes. The aim of the study is to investigate the impact of body mass index (BMI) on left atrial function using standard and advanced echocardiography in a population of patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: 395 adult patients suffering from non-valvular AF, divided into three tertiles based on BMI value, carry out a cardiological examination with standard and advanced echocardiography. Results: Peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS), a measure of left atrial function, is lower in the tertile with highest BMI (14.3 ± 8.2%) compared to both the first (19 ± 11.5%) and the second tertile (17.7 ± 10.6%) in a statistically significant manner (p < 0.002). Furthermore, BMI is significantly associated independent with the PALS by multilinear regression analysis, even after correction of the data for CHA2DS2-VASc score, left ventricular mass index, left ventricular ejection fraction, E/E' ratio and systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (coefficient standardized β = -0.127, p < 0.02; Cumulative R2 = 0.41, SEE = 0.8%, p < 0.0001). Conclusions: BMI could be considered an additional factor in assessing cardiovascular risk in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, in addition to the well-known CHA2DS2-VASc score.

Abstract
Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) is defined as diagnosed at younger than 50 years of age and indicates a health burden globally. Patients with EOCRC have distinct risk factors, clinical characteristics, and molecular pathogenesis compared with older patients with CRC. Further investigations have identified different roles of obesity between EOCRC and late-onset colorectal cancer (LOCRC). Most studies have focused on the clinical characteristics of obesity in EOCRC, therefore, the mechanism involved in the association between obesity and EOCRC remains inconclusive. This review further states that obesity affects the carcinogenesis of EOCRC as well as its development and progression, which may lead to obesity-related metabolic syndrome, intestinal dysbacteriosis, and intestinal inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS There is a lack of literature concerning the effects of visceral adipose on the development of first cardiometabolic disease (FCMD) and its subsequent progression to cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) and mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS 423,934 participants from the UK Biobank with different baseline disease conditions were included in the analysis. CMM was defined as the simultaneous presence of coronary heart disease, T2D, and stroke. Visceral adiposity was estimated by calculating the visceral adiposity index (VAI). Multistate models were used to assess the effect of visceral adiposity on the development of CMM. During a median follow-up of 13.5 years, 50,589 patients had at least one CMD, 6131 were diagnosed with CMM, whereas 24,634 patients died. We observed distinct roles of VAI with respect to different disease transitions of CMM. HRs (95 % CIs) of high VAI were 2.35 (2.29-2.42) and 1.64 (1.50-1.79) for transitions from healthy to FCMD and from FCMD to CMM, and 0.97 (0.93-1.02) for all-cause mortality risk from healthy, FCMD and CMM, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides the first evidence that visceral adipose may contribute to the development of FCMD and CMM in healthy participants. However, visceral adipose may confer resistance to all-cause mortality in participants with existing CMD or CMM. A better understanding of the relationship between visceral adipose and CMM can focalize further investigations on patients with CMD with high levels of visceral fat and help take targeted preventive measures to reduce the medical burden on individual patients and society.

Abstract
Obesity is a worldwide epidemic, and bariatric surgery has become increasingly popular due to its effectiveness in treating it. Therefore, understanding this area is of paramount importance. This article aims to provide an understanding of the development of the topic related to procedures, content, data, and status. To achieve this objective, a literature review and a bibliometric analysis were conducted. The methods provided insight into the current state and relevant topics over time. In conclusion, the article provided the identification of the transformation of the research field, initially focused only on physical aspects, to a more complex approach, which also incorporates psychological and social aspects and the correlation between obesity, bariatric surgery, and quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric obesity is a global emerging burden for society; among its health-related consequences there are hypertension (HTN) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Several anthropometric indices have been investigated for the early identification of cardiovascular risk in children. The aim of the present study was to assess whether tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) was associated with LVH in a cohort of Caucasian children and adolescents with obesity. METHODS In this observational study, 63 children and adolescents with obesity aged 7-to-16 years were enrolled. During outpatient visits, adiposity, and cardio-metabolic indices (BMI z-score, WHR, TMI, ABSI) were collected. All subjects underwent a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and transthoracic echocardiography. RESULTS Children and adolescents with obesity with LVH had significantly higher BMI z-score (p = 0.009), WHR (p = 0.006) and TMI (p = 0.026) compared to children without LVH. WC and WHR were the only indices significantly associated with left ventricular mass index (LVMI). CONCLUSION Left ventricular remodeling is associated with the cardio-metabolic risk markers WC and WHR, but not with the adiposity index TMI among children with obesity.

Abstract
The associations of body composition components, including muscle and adipose tissue, and markers of subclinical coronary artery disease are unclear. We examined the relation between abdominal computed tomography (CT)-derived measures of the area and density of fat and muscle with coronary artery calcification (CAC), using data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). A total of 1,974 randomly selected MESA participants free of coronary heart disease underwent abdominal CT scans at examinations 2 or 3, with the resulting images interrogated for abdominal body composition. Using 6 cross-sectional slices spanning L2 to L5, the Medical Imaging Processing Analysis and Visualization software was used to determine abdominal muscle and fat composition using appropriate Hounsfield units ranges. CT chest scans were used to obtain CAC scores, calculated using the Agatston method and spatially weighted calcium score. Multivariable linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the relation between abdominal visceral fat and muscle area and density to prevalent CAC. A total of 1,089 participants had a CAC >0, with an average CAC score of 310. In the fully adjusted model, for every 10-cm2 increase in visceral fat area, the likelihood of having a CAC greater than 0 increased by 0.60% (p <0.001). In the minimally adjusted model, abdominal muscle area was significantly associated with CAC >0, which became nonsignificant in the fully adjusted model. For the density of visceral fat, every 1-Hounsfield unit increase (less lipid-dense fat tissue), the likelihood of having a CAC score >0 decreased by 0.29% (p <0.05). No significant relation was observed between density of abdominal muscle and CAC >0. A greater area and higher lipid density of abdominal visceral fat were associated with an increased likelihood of having CAC, whereas there was no significant relation between abdominal muscle area or density and CAC. The quantity and the quality of fat have associations, with an important marker of subclinical atherosclerosis, CAC, and their significance with respect to cardiovascular outcomes, require further evaluation.

Abstract
Background The associations of body fat parameters with arterial stiffness measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity in hypertensive patients were scarce. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed 4322 hypertensive adults. The correlations between the anthropometric indexes (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference, waist-tohip ratio [WHR], waist-to-height ratio [WHtR], a body shape index [ABSI], body round index [BRI]) and ba-PWV values were analyzed using multivariable linear regression model. Results In both sex categories, linear regression models showed that BMI levels were inversely related to baPWV (adjusted-β per SD increase in male: -0.51, 95% CI -0.66 to -0.36, P < 0.001; female: -0.50, 95% CI -0.63 to -0.37, P < 0.001). Waist circumference positively correlated with baPWV only in male hypertensive individuals. BaPWV positively correlated to WHR or WHtR levels (adjusted-β per SD increase: 0.32, 95% CI 0.21 to 0.43, P < 0.001; 0.64, 95% CI 0.47 to 0.82, P < 0.001; respectively), ABSI (adjusted-β per SD increase for ABSI × 100: 0.27, 95% CI 0.18 to 0.36, P < 0.001) and BRI (adjusted-β per SD increase: 0.64, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.81, P < 0.001) levels. The relationship between anthropometric indices and arterial stiffness based on baPWV values were also consistent. ABSI had the highest predictive power of arterial stiffness (area under the curve, 0.594; P < 0.001). Conclusion In Chinese adults with hypertension, BMI was inversely related to baPWV, while WHR, WHtR, ABSI and BRI were positively related. Waist circumference positively correlated with baPWV only in male hypertensive individuals.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is recognized as the primary cause of mortality and morbidity on a global scale, and developing a clear treatment is an important tool for improving it. Cardiometabolic disorder (CMD) is a syndrome resulting from the combination of cardiovascular, endocrine, pro-thrombotic, and inflammatory health hazards. Due to their complex pathological mechanisms, there is a lack of effective diagnostic and treatment methods for cardiac metabolic disorders. Lactylation is a type of post-translational modification (PTM) that plays a regulatory role in various cellular physiological processes by inducing changes in the spatial conformation of proteins. Numerous studies have reported that lactylation modification plays a crucial role in post-translational modifications and is closely related to cardiac metabolic diseases. This article discusses the molecular biology of lactylation modifications and outlines the roles and mechanisms of lactylation modifications in cardiometabolic disorders, offering valuable insights for the diagnosis and treatment of such conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Observational studies have shown that obesity considerably affects the cardiovascular system. Thus we conducted this Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the causal effect of childhood obesity on heart failure (HF) and its risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS We obtained genetic instruments from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) that investigated childhood obesity, HF, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), atrial fibrillation (AF), coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction (MI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), valvular heart disease, myocarditis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and hyperthyroidism. Inverse variance weighting (IVW), weighted median analysis, MR-Egger, and MR-pleiotropy residual sum and outlier (MR-PRESSO) were employed for MR analyses. In addition, the leave-one-out sensitivity test, MR-PRESSO global test, and Cochran's Q test were used for sensitivity analyses. Genetic evaluations showed that childhood obesity increases the risk of HF (odds ratio [OR] = 1.11, 95%CI: 1.05-1.17, p = 1.26 × 10-4), T2DM (OR = 1.17, 95%CI: 1.12-1.23, p = 8.80 × 10-12), AF (OR = 1.08, 95%CI: 1.05-1.12, p = 2.66 × 10-7), MI (OR = 1.08, 95%CI: 1.04-1.13, p = 3.35 × 10-4), and CAD (OR = 1.08, 95%CI: 1.03-1.13, p = 1.48 × 10-3). We found no association between childhood obesity and CKD, valvular heart disease, myocarditis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or hyperthyroidism. Sensitivity analysis and Bonferroni's correction showed consistent results. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides new evidence for the relationship between childhood obesity and HF and its risk factors. The results indicate that individuals with a history of childhood obesity require more clinical attention to prevent the development of HF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive symptoms are common in stroke survivors. While obesity has been associated with stroke and depression, its influence on the association between stroke and depressive symptoms is unknown. METHODS Cross-sectional data from 2015 to 2016 Canadian Community Health Survey was used. History of stroke was self-reported and our outcome of interest was depressive symptoms in the prior 2 weeks, measured using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire. Self-reported body mass index (BMI) was modeled as cubic spline terms to allow for nonlinear associations. We used multivariable logistic regression to evaluate the association between stroke and depressive symptoms and added an interaction term to evaluate the modifying effect of BMI. RESULTS Of the 47,521 participants, 694 (1.0%) had a stroke and 3314 (6.5%) had depressive symptoms. Those with stroke had a higher odds of depressive symptoms than those without (aOR = 3.13, 95% CI 2.48, 3.93). BMI did not modify the stroke-depressive symptoms association (P interaction = 0.242) despite the observed variation in stroke-depressive symptoms association across BMI categories,: normal BMI [18.5-25 kg/m2] (aOR† = 3.91, 95% CI 2.45, 6.11), overweight [25-30 kg/m2] (aOR† = 2.63, 95% CI 1.58, 4.20), and obese [>30 kg/m2] (aOR† = 2.76, 95% CI 1.92, 3.94). Similar results were found when depressive symptoms were modeled as a continuous measure. CONCLUSION The association between stroke and depressive symptoms is not modified by BMI, needing additional work to understand the role of obesity on depression after stroke.

Abstract
Obesity can lead to cardiovascular dysfunctions and cause electrocardiographic disruptions. Bariatric surgery plays a significant role in weight loss. To assess its benefits, this study investigated electrocardiographic changes before and after bariatric surgery. The present article describes a retrospective cohort study with a 6-month follow-up period. Electrocardiograms were interpreted and compared before and six months after surgery. The relationships between weight loss, type of surgery, and electrocardiographic alterations were analyzed. A total of 200 patients participated in the study, with 34 (17%) men and 166 (83%) women. The mean age of the participants was 44.6 ± 8.6, and their mean body mass index was 43.8 ± 5.5 kg/m2. The mean of QTc decreased after the surgery, while the Sokolow-Lyon scores increased. The statistical analysis showed that QTc dispersion (> 40) (P < 0.001), right ventricular hypertrophy (P < 0.001), abnormal R wave progression (P < 0.001), QTc (P < 0.001) and Sokolow-Lyon criteria (P < 0.001) significantly changed postoperatively. In conclusion, bariatric surgery can reduce QTc, correct poor R wave progression, and resolve right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) in patients with morbid obesity.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate the association between long-term use of antibiotics during childhood and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using a prospective cohort from the UK Biobank. METHODS Participants in the UK Biobank who completed the online survey for digestive health were included in this prospective cohort study. A Cox regression model adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, general health factors, mental health, lifestyle factors, comorbidities, and medication use was used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and confidence interval (CI) of the association between long-term use of antibiotics in the childhood and incident T2DM. RESULTS The final analyses included 152,992 participants and 22,133 of them received long-term/recurrent antibiotics as children or teenagers. During the follow-up, 3370 and 681 incident T2DM cases occurred in the non-exposed and exposed groups respectively. Long-term use of antibiotics in childhood was associated with an increased risk of T2DM, with an HR of 1.16 (95 % CI, 1.07-1.27) after adjusting for potential confounders. Results in the subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were highly consistent with the primary analyses. CONCLUSIONS Long-term use of antibiotics in childhood is associated with the risk of T2DM in middle and old age in the UK Biobank population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate potential modifying effects of genetic susceptibility to obesity on the association of lifestyle factors with coronary artery disease (CAD) risk. METHODS A total of 328,606 participants (54% women) were included using data from the UK Biobank. We evaluated the risk of developing CAD associated with obesity-related polygenic scores (PGSs) and healthy lifestyle scores (HLSs). HLSs were constructed using six lifestyle factors. Obesity PGSs were created using genetic variants identified by genome-wide association studies, including 941 variants for body mass index (BMI) and 457 for waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Both HLSs and PGSs were categorized into three groups. RESULTS During a 9-year median follow-up, 14,541 participants developed CAD. An unhealthy lifestyle was significantly associated with an increased CAD risk (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.24, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.09-2.40). High BMI and WHR PGSs were each significantly associated with an increased CAD risk (HRBMI = 1.23, 1.17-1.29; HRWHR = 1.15, 1.09-1.21). Lifestyle factors explained 41% (95% CI = 38%-45%) of CAD, while genetic variants for BMI explained only 10% (7%-14%). Risks of CAD were increased with poorer HLS independent of obesity-related PGSs. Individuals with the most unhealthy lifestyle and highest BMI PGS had the highest risk of CAD risk (HR = 2.59, 95% CI = 2.26-2.97), compared with participants with the healthiest lifestyle and lowest BMI PGS. CONCLUSIONS While the observational nature of the study precludes the establishment of causality, our study provides supports for a causal association between obesity and CAD risk and the importance of lifestyle modification in the prevention of CAD.

Abstract
PURPOSE According to the Japan National Health and Nutrition Survey 2019, the proportion of people with prediabetes is estimated to be 27.3%. Western-style dietary habits can lead to obesity and a functional abnormality of the adipose tissue, which can cause insulin resistance and predispose one to diabetes. We examined the relationship between insulin resistance using body adiposity parameters as surrogate markers. METHODS This study enrolled 248 healthy participants to determine the association of six body adiposity parameters, namely, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product index (LAP), waist circumference-triglyceride index (WTI), and triglyceride (TG)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio with insulin resistance. Receiver operating characteristics curve analyses were performed to assess the accuracy of these parameters in identifying insulin resistance. RESULTS The data of the 248 participants (women 79 and men 169) were examined in this study. WC showed the highest accuracy in the obese women group (cut-off value: 89.8 with sensitivity: 0.900 and specificity: 0.522, AUC: 0.680) and men group (cut-off value: 90.0 with sensitivity: 0.862 and specificity: 0.508, AUC: 0.701). The TG/HDL ratio showed the highest accuracy in men with non-obesity (cut-off value: 0.8 with sensitivity: 0.857 and specificity: 0.649, AUC: 0.780). CONCLUSION Application of this finding should be useful in the early screening of obesity in men with non-obesity, such as during regular health check-up with the TG/HDL ratio in addition to the usually used WC, to assess insulin resistance and prevent lifestyle-related diseases that can lead to cardiovascular events.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The growing trend towards conscious and sustainable dietary choices has led to increased adoption of flexitarian diets, characterised by plant-based eating habits with occasional consumption of meat and processed meat products. However, the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors associated with flexitarian diets compared to both vegans and omnivores remain underexplored. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 94 healthy participants aged 25-45 years, categorized into long-term flexitarians (FXs ≤ 50 g/day of meat and meat products, n = 32), vegans (Vs, no animal products, n = 33), and omnivores (OMNs ≥ 170 g/day of meat and meat products, n = 29) were included. Various CVD risk factors were measured, including fasting blood samples for metabolic biomarkers, body composition analysis via bioimpedance, blood pressure measurements, arterial stiffness evaluated through pulse wave velocity (PWV) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) severity was determined using browser-based calculations (MetS-scores). Dietary intake was assessed using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), diet quality was calculated with the Healthy Eating Index-flexible (HEI-Flex), while physical activity levels were recorded using the validated Freiburger questionnaire. RESULTS The data showed that FXs and Vs had more beneficial levels of insulin, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol compared to OMNs. Notably, FXs revealed the most favorable MetS-score results based on both BMI and waistline, and better PWV values than Vs and OMNs. In addition, FXs and Vs reported higher intake rates of vegetables, fruit, nuts/seeds and plant-based milk alternatives. CONCLUSION The flexitarian diet appears to confer cardiovascular benefits. While Vs had the most favorable results overall, this study supports that reducing meat and processed meat products intake, as in flexitarianism, may contribute to CVD risk factor advantages.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of visceral adiposity with mortality in older adults is conflicting. Whether age influences the predicting ability of visceral adiposity (VAI) for mortality remains unknown. This study uncovered the relationship between age-adjusted visceral adiposity index and mortality through the data of NHANES 2011-2014. METHODS This study obtained data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014. The age-adjusted visceral adiposity index (AVAI) scores were expressed as quartiles. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was also applied to compare the predictive ability for mortality. Multivariate weighted Cox regression models were constructed to explore the association between AVAI and mortality. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were conducted for survival analyses. Smooth curve fittings and two-piecewise linear models were applied to explore the relationships between AVAI and mortality. RESULTS This study recruited 4281 subjects aged ≥ 18 years from the NHANES 2011-2014. The AUCs of AVAI were 0.82 (0.79, 0.86) and 0.89 (0.85, 0.92) for predicting all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality, which were superior to BMI, WC and VAI (all p < 0.05). AVAI is still an independent predictor for mortality adjusted for confounders. The associations of AVAI with all-cause and cardiovascular mortalities were dose-responsive, with higher AVAI scores indicating higher mortality risks. CONCLUSION Age significantly improves the ability of VAI for predicting all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Age-adjusted VAI is independently associated with mortality risk, and thus could be considered a reliable parameter for assessing mortality risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Obesity with multiple metabolic syndrome (MetS) components and/or with skeletal muscle loss is at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to clarify the utility of anthropometric indices for identifying patients with overweight/obese at high risk of CVD based on having multiple MetS components and skeletal muscle loss. METHODS & RESULTS This cross-sectional study included 188 overweight/obese (BMI ≥25 kg/m2, Japanese patients; 73 men and 115 women, mean age 55.7 years). First, we performed correlation analysis among seven anthropometric indices, body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHpR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), a body shape index (ABSI), and body roundness index (BRI). Unlike the others, only ABSI was not correlated with BMI. Then, we conducted receiver operating characteristic analysis to assess the predictive abilities of anthropometric indices for having multiple MetS components. WC, WHpR, WHtR, BRI, and ABSI had significant predictive abilities for having multiple MetS components. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis showed that only ABSI had significantly negative associations with all sarcopenia-evaluated indices (skeletal muscle mass index [SMI], handgrip strength [HGS], and muscle quality [MQ]), irrespective of sex and age. Finally, an analysis of covariance showed that the high ABSI group had significantly lower SMI and HGS than the low ABSI group, irrespective of sex and age. CONCLUSION ABSI was deemed useful for BMI-independently identifying Japanese patients with overweight/obese at high risk of CVD based on having multiple MetS components and skeletal muscle loss. Abstract
BACKGROUND Low birth weight is a known risk factor for adult coronary heart disease (CHD), but the additional effect of weight development during childhood and early adult life has not been studied. METHODS We included 35 659 men born 1945 to 1961 from the population-based BMI Epidemiology Study Gothenburg, with data available on birthweight, BMI in childhood (8 years), and BMI in young adulthood (20 years). Information on CHD diagnoses was retrieved from national registers. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate hazard ratios and 95% CIs for the risk of early and late CHD (before and after 58.4 years of age, respectively). RESULTS During follow-up, a total of 3380 cases of CHD (fatal and nonfatal) were registered. Birth weight was inversely associated with the risk of both early (hazard ratio, 0.88 per SD increase [95% CI, 0.84-0.92]) and late (hazard ratio, 0.94 per SD increase [95% CI, 0.90-0.98]) CHD, independently of BMI at 8 years and BMI change during puberty. In a model including birth weight (below or above the median) together with overweight at 8 and 20 years, only birth weight and young adult overweight, but not overweight in childhood, were significantly associated with the risk of CHD. A birth weight below the median, followed by overweight at 20 years of age was associated with a more than doubled risk of early CHD (hazard ratio, 2.29 [95% CI, 1.86-2.81]), compared with the reference (birth weight above the median and normal weight at 20 years of age). This excess risk was even more pronounced for a birthweight below 2.5 kg. CONCLUSIONS We demonstrate that low birth weight and young adult overweight are important developmental markers of risk for adult CHD. These findings motivate a life course perspective for prevention and risk assessment of adult CHD.

Abstract
Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) could be done by the removal of a big portion of the stomach, leading to reduced amounts of food taken as a result of the smaller stomach size. In contrast, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) can be done by creating a small stomach pouch and rerouting a part of the small intestine, employing combined mechanisms of restriction and malabsorption to limit food intake and modify nutrient absorption. Our aim is to identify the most effective and safest surgical intervention for individuals with both Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and obesity, considering both short and long-term outcomes. We will assess participants undergoing either SG or RYGB to determine the optimal surgical approach. We made a thorough search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to November 2023. Our focus was on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the safety and efficacy of RYGB and SG in T2DM regarding any extractable data. We excluded studies of other designs, such as cohorts, case reports, case series, reviews, in vitro studies, postmortem analyses, and conference abstracts. Utilizing Review Manager 5.4, we performed a meta-analysis, combining risk ratios (RR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) conducted for binary outcomes, while mean with SD and 95% CI are pooled for the continuous ones. The total number of participants in our study is 4,148 patients. Our analysis indicates superior outcomes in the group undergoing RYGB surgery compared to the SG group (RR = 0.76, 95% (CI) (0.66 to 0.88), P = 0.0002). The pooled data exhibited homogeneity (P = 0.51, I2 = 0%) after employing the leave-one-out method. For the 1-3 year period, six studies involving 332 patients with T2DM yielded non-significant results (RR = 0.83, 95% CI (0.66 to 1.06), P = 0.14) with homogeneity (P = 0.24, I2 = 28%). Conversely, the 5-10 year period, with six studies comprising 728 DM patients, demonstrated significant results (RR = 0.69, 95% CI (0.56 to 0.85), P = 0.14) and homogeneity (P = 0.84, I2 = 0%). In terms of total body weight loss, our findings indicate significantly higher weight loss with RYGB (mean difference (MD) = -6.13, 95% CI (-8.65 to -3.6), P > 0.00001). However, pooled data exhibited considerable heterogeneity (P > 0.00001, I2 = 93%). Subgroup analyses for the 1-3 year period (five studies, 364 DM patients) and 5-10 year period (six studies, 985 DM patients) also revealed significant differences favoring RYGB, with heterogeneity observed in both periods (1-3 years: P > 0.00001, I2 = 95%; 5-10 years: P = 0.001, I2 = 75%). RYGB demonstrated significant long-term improvement in diabetes remission and superior total body weight loss compared to SG. While no notable differences were observed in other efficacy outcomes, safety parameters require further investigation. no significant distinctions were found in any of the safety outcomes: hypertension (HTN), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), hyperlipidemia, fasting blood glucose, vomiting, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and total cholesterol. Further research is essential to comprehensively assess safety outcomes for both surgical approaches.

Abstract
AIMS Obesity is an epidemic that is a critical contributor to hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. Current paradigms suggest that endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS/NOS3) in the vessel wall is the primary regulator of vascular function and blood pressure. However, recent studies have revealed the presence of eNOS/NOS3 in the adipocytes of white adipose tissues and perivascular adipose tissues (PVATs). The current understanding of the role of adipocyte NOS3 is based mainly on studies using global knockout models. The present study aimed to elucidate the functional significance of adipocyte NOS3 for vascular function and blood pressure control. METHODS AND RESULTS We generated an adipocyte-specific NOS3 knockout mouse line using adiponectin promoter-specific Cre-induced gene inactivation. Control and adipocyte-specific NOS3 knockout (A-NOS3 KO) mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Despite less weight gain, A-NOS3 KO mice exhibited a significant increase in blood pressure after HFD feeding, associated with exacerbated vascular dysfunction and remodelling. A-NOS3 KO mice also showed increased expression of signature markers of inflammation and hypoxia in the PVATs. Among the differentially expressed adipokines, we have observed an upregulation of a novel adipokine, chemerin, in A-NOS3 KO mice. Chemerin was recently reported to link obesity and vascular dysfunction. Treatment with chemerin neutralizing antibody normalized the expression of remodelling markers in the aorta segments cultured in serum from HFD-fed A-NOS3 KO mice ex vivo. CONCLUSION These data suggest that NOS3 in adipocytes is vital in maintaining vascular homeostasis; dysfunction of adipocyte NOS3 contributes to obesity-induced vascular remodelling and hypertension.

Abstract
Exercise rehabilitation can improve the prognosis of patients with coronary heart disease. However, a bibliometric analysis of the global exercise rehabilitation for coronary heart disease (CHD) research topic is lacking. This study investigated the development trends and research hotspots in the field of coronary heart disease and exercise rehabilitation. CiteSpace software was used to analyze the literature on exercise therapy for CHD in the Web of Science Core Collection database. We analyzed the data of countries/institutions, journals, authors, keywords, and cited references. A total of 3485 peer-reviewed papers were found, and the number of publications on the topic has steadily increased. The most productive country is the USA (1125), followed by China (477) and England (399). The top 3 active academic institutions are Research Libraries UK (RLUK) (236), Harvard University (152), and the University of California System (118). The most commonly cited journals are Circulation (2596), The most commonly cited references are "Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation for coronary heart disease" (75), Lavie CJ had published the most papers (48). World Health Organization was the most influential author (334 citations). The research frontier trends in this field are body composition, participation, and function. Research on the effects of physical activity or exercise on patients with CHD is a focus of continuous exploration in this field. This study provides a new scientific perspective for exercise rehabilitation and CHD research and gives researchers valuable information for detecting the current research status, hotspots, and emerging trends for further research.

Abstract
The simplest form of carbohydrates are monosaccharides which are the building blocks for the synthesis of polymers or complex carbohydrates. Monosaccharide contents of 197 rice accessions were quantified by HPAEC-PAD in rice (Oryza sativa L.) whole grain (RWG). A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was carried out using 33,812 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to identify corresponding genomic regions influencing neutral monosaccharides contents. In total, 49 GWAS signals contained in 17 genomic regions (quantitative trait loci [QTLs]) on seven chromosomes of rice were determined to be associated with monosaccharides contents of whole grain. The QTLs were found for fucose (1), mannose (1), xylose (2), arabinose (2), galactose (4), and rhamnose (7) contents, all of which are novel. Based on co-location of annotated rice genes in the vicinity of GWAS signals, the constituents of the whole grain were associated with the following candidate genes: arabinose content with α-N-arabinofuranosidase, pectinesterase inhibitor, and glucosamine-fructose-6-phosphate aminotransferase 1; xylose content with ZOS1-10 (a C2H2 zinc finger transcription factor [TF]); mannose content with aldose 1-epimerase-like protein and a MYB family TF; galactose content with a GT8 family member (galacturonosyltransferase-like 3), a GRAS family TF, and a GH16 family member (xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase xyloglucan 23); fucose content with gibberellin 20 oxidase and a lysine-rich arabinogalactan protein 19, and finally rhamnose content with myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase, UDP-arabinopyranose mutase, and COBRA-like protein precursor. The results of this study should improve our understanding of the genetic basis of the factors that might be involved in the biosynthesis, regulation, and turnover of monosaccharides in RWG, aiming to enhance the nutritional value of rice grain and impact the related industries.

Abstract
Cardiovascular and metabolic complications associated with excess adiposity are linked to chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system, resulting in a high risk of mortality among obese individuals. Obesity-related positive energy balance underlies the progression of hypertension, end-organ damage, and insulin resistance, driven by increased sympathetic tone throughout the body. It is, therefore, important to understand the central network that drives and maintains sustained activation of the sympathetic nervous system in the obese state. Experimental and clinical studies have identified structural changes and altered dynamics in both grey and white matter regions in obesity. Aberrant activation in certain brain regions has been associated with altered reward circuitry and metabolic pathways including leptin and insulin signaling along with adiposity-driven systemic and central inflammation. The impact of these pathways on the brain via overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system has gained interest in the past decade. Primarily, the brainstem, hypothalamus, amygdala, hippocampus, and cortical structures including the insular, orbitofrontal, temporal, cingulate, and prefrontal cortices have been identified in this context. Although the central network involving these structures is much more intricate, this review highlights recent evidence identifying these regions in sympathetic overactivity in obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence on sociodemographic determinants and spatial variations in the fruit and/or vegetable (FV) consumption was reported. This study aimed to explore geographical and sociodemographic disparities in the level of FV consumption among adults in Burkina Faso, using the national baseline data. METHODS This was a cross-sectional secondary study of primary data obtained by the 2013 (September to October) World Health Organization Stepwise Approach to Surveillance survey conducted in Burkina Faso. The participants were 4402 women and men aged 25-64 years and living in all 13 Burkinabè Regions. Descriptive and analytical analyses were performed using Student's t test, ANOVA, the chi-square test, Fisher's exact test and logistic regressions. RESULTS The prevalence of a typical daily consumption of at least three servings was 4.1% (95% CI: 3.6-4.8) for fruits and 6.6% (95% CI: 5.9-7.3) for vegetables. The national prevalence of adequate FV intake was 5.1% (95% CI: 4.4-5.8), and for two Regions ("Centre-Ouest" and "Nord") the pooled prevalence was 22.4%, while in the other eleven Regions its was significantly lower, 2.4% (p = 0.0001). Using quartiles derived from the national level of consumption, each of these two Regions had a higher proportion (about 50%) of their participants in the fourth quartile (the higher level). The associated sociodemographic factors with the adequate intake were being rural residents (aOR = 1.7, p = 0.011) and women (aOR = 1.3; p = 0.03). CONCLUSION Except for the Regions of "Centre-Ouest" and "Nord" of Burkina Faso, the prevalence of adequate consumption of FV was very low in its other eleven Regions. Measures to increase consumption in urban people are urgent while women should be the key actor in the family-based approaches implementation and the nutrition education promoting FV consumption.

Abstract
Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning is used for objective determination of body composition, but instrumentation is expensive and not generally available in customary clinical practice. Anthropometric surrogates are often substituted as anticipated correlates of absolute and relative body fat content in the clinical management of obesity and its associated medical risks. DXA and anthropometric data from a cohort of 9230 randomly selected American subjects, available through the ongoing National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, was used to evaluate combinations of surrogates (age, height, total weight, waist circumference) as predictors of DXA-determined absolute and relative body fat content. Multiple regression analysis yielded linear combinations of the 4 surrogates that were closely predictive of DXA-determined absolute fat content (R2 = 0.93 and 0.96 for male and female subjects). Accuracy of the new algorithm was improved over customary surrogate-based predictors such as body mass index. However prediction of relative body fat was less robust (R2 less than 0.75), probably due to the nonlinear relation between degree of obesity (based on body mass index) and relative body fat. The paradigm was validated using an independent cohort from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, as well as two independent external subject groups. The described regression-based algorithm is likely to be a sufficiently accurate predictor of absolute body fat (but not relative body fat) to substitute for DXA scanning in many clinical situations. Further work is needed to assess algorithm validity for subgroups of individuals with "atypical" body construction.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate the correlation of the fat-to-muscle ratio (FMR) with insulin resistance (IR) and cardiometabolic disorders (CMD) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively recruited 420 adults with T1DM [52.6% men, median age 32.4 (24.5, 43.0) years]. Body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis and FMR was calculated. The characteristics of the overall participants were compared between tertiles of FMR. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association of FMR tertiles with IR and cardiometabolic risk factors. RESULTS Median age and median haemoglobin A1c of all participants were 32.4 (24.5, 43.0) years and 7.4 (6.5, 8.7)%, respectively. The prevalence of IR and CMD was 18% and 38.6%. The FMR significantly differed between men and women [0.39 (0.31, 0.53) vs. 0.74 (0.63, 0.92), respectively, p < .001]. The proportion of IR and CMD gradually increased as the FMR increased. The multivariable-adjusted odd ratios for IR and CMD in FMR tertile 3 compared with tertile 1 were 4.8 [95% confidence interval (CI): (1.9, 12.1)] and 9.7 (95% CI: 4.2, 22.3), respectively, in men. For women, the corresponding odd ratios were 4.0 (95% CI: 1.2, 12.9) for IR and 5.8 (95% CI: 2.4, 13.6) for CMD. CONCLUSIONS FMR is associated with IR and CMD in adults with T1DM and could be used as a promising parameter for targeting treatment in T1DM.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide that poses a significant threat to human health. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality in NAFLD patients. NAFLD and CVD share risk factors such as obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. However, whether NAFLD is a causal risk factor for CVD remains a matter of debate. This review summarizes the evidence from prospective clinical and Mendelian randomization studies that underscore the potential causal relationship between NAFLD and CVD. The mechanisms of NAFLD contributing to the development of CVD and the necessity of addressing CVD risk while managing NAFLD in clinical practice are also discussed.

Abstract
The scope of this paper was to analyze the association between the time spent watching television (TV) and the presence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) obesity and obesity associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) among elderly Brazilians, according to gender, comparing data from the 2013 and 2019 National Health Surveys (NHS). It involved a cross-sectional study, with data from 23,815 and 43,554 elderly people, respectively, from the 2013 and 2019 NHS. Self-reported TV screen time was categorized into: <3, 3-6, and ≥6 per day. Obesity was assessed by body mass index ≥27 kg/m² and CVD by self-reported medical diagnosis. In 2013, elderly women who watched TV ≥6 hours/day were more likely to have OCD obesity (OR=1.87; 95%CI=1.32;2.64) and obesity associated with CVD (OR=6.30; 95%CI=3.38;11.74). In 2019, elderly women who watched TV between 3-6 hours/day (OR=1.44; 95%CI=1.25;1.65) and ≥6 hours/day (OR=1.55; 95%CI=1.28;1.88) were more likely to have OCD obesity, while the incidence of obesity associated with CVD was higher for ≥6 hours/day (OR=2.13; 95%CI=1.48;3.06). In 2019, men were more likely to have obesity associated with CVD watching TV between 3-6 hours/day (OR=1.76; 95%CI=1.20;2.56) and ≥6 hours/day (OR=2.13; 95%CI=1.27;3.57). The importance of reducing screen time by the elderly is clearly evident.

Abstract
PURPOSE Obesity is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease; however, the impact of weight loss on cardiovascular health (CVH) in individuals with specific obesity patterns remains incompletely understood. The objective of our study was to investigate the relationship weight loss percentage and CVH scores across individuals with various obesity patterns. METHODS Our study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2007 and 2018, involving a total of 12,835 participants aged 16 years or older, to conduct a cross-sectional analysis. Multiple linear regression and multinomial logistic regression methods were used to assess the correlation between the weight loss percentage and the CVH scores. Additionally, restricted cubic spline analysis was employed to examine the nonlinear relationship between the two variables. RESULTS Compared to individuals with a weight loss percentage < 0%, participants with weight loss percentages of 0-5% and 5.1-10% showed improved CVH scores, with β values of 2.85 (95% CI 2.32-3.38) and 2.55 (95% CI 1.69-3.4), respectively. Regarding different obesity patterns, compared to participants with a weight loss percentage < 0%, participants with a weight loss percentage of 0-5% showed an increase in CVH scores in the normal weight and overweight/general obesity (OGO) groups, with β values of 1.45 (95% CI 0.7-2.19) and 1.22 (95% CI 0.46-1.97), respectively. Restricted cubic spline analysis revealed a significant inverted U-shaped relationship between the weight loss percentage and the CVH scores (with optimal CVH scores at 3%). CONCLUSIONS There was an inverted U-shaped relationship between weight loss percentage and CVH scores, with moderate weight loss (0-10%, optimal value of 3%) being associated with improved CVH scores, especially among individuals with OGO. Abstract
Background Obesity and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are prevailing worldwide, bringing a heavy medical burden. Clinical and pathophysiological relationship between obesity and COPD is paradoxical and elusive. We aim to explore their inherent associations from clinical, genetic, and animal levels. Methods We performed literature review and cohort analysis of patients with COPD to compare lung function, symptom, and prognosis among different weight groups. After retrieving datasets of obesity and COPD in Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, we carried out differentially expressed gene analysis, functional enrichment, protein-protein interactions network, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis. Then, we acquired paraffin-embedded lung tissues of fatty acid-binding protein 4-Cre-BMPR2fl/fl conditional knockout (CKO) mice that were characterized by adipocyte-specific knockout of bone morphogenetic protein receptor 2 (BMPR2) for staining and analysis. Results Our cohort study reports the effect of obesity on COPD is inconsistent with previous clinical studies. Lung function of overweight group was statistically superior to that of other groups. We also found that the inflammatory factors were significantly increased hub genes, and cytokine-associated pathways were enriched in white adipose tissue of patients with obesity. Similarly, injury repair-associated genes and pathways were further enhanced in the small airways of patients with COPD. CKO mice spontaneously developed lung injury, emphysema, and pulmonary vascular remodeling, along with increased infiltration of macrophages. BMPR2-defiecient adipocytes had dysregulated expression of adipocytokines. Conclusion Inflammation and abnormal repair might be potential mechanisms of the pathological association between obesity and COPD. BMPR2-associated adipocyte dysfunction promoted lung inflammation and aberrant repair, in which adipocytokines might play a role and thus could be a promising therapeutic target.

Abstract
Background Obesity (OB) is a chronic metabolic disease with important associated comorbidities and mortality. Vitamin D supplementation is frequently administered after bariatric surgery (BS), so as to reduce OB-related complications, maybe including chronic inflammation. Aim This study aimed to explore relations between vitamin D metabolites and components of the inflammasome machinery in OB before and after BS and their relations with the improvement of metabolic comorbidities. Patients and methods Epidemiological/clinical/anthropometric/biochemical evaluation was performed in patients with OB at baseline and 6 months after BS. Evaluation of i) vitamin-D metabolites in plasma and ii) components of the inflammasome machinery and inflammatory-associated factors [NOD-like-receptors (NLRs), inflammasome-activation-components, cytokines and inflammation/apoptosis-related components, and cell-cycle and DNA-damage regulators] in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was performed at baseline and 6 months after BS. Clinical and molecular correlations/associations were analyzed. Results Significant correlations between vitamin D metabolites and inflammasome-machinery components were observed at baseline, and these correlations were significantly reduced 6 months after BS in parallel to a decrease in inflammation markers, fat mass, and body weight. Treatment with calcifediol remarkably increased 25OHD levels, despite 24,25(OH)2D3 remained stable after BS. Several inflammasome-machinery components were associated with improvement in metabolic comorbidities, especially hypertension and dyslipidemia. Conclusion The beneficial effects of vitamin D on OB-related comorbidities after BS patients are associated with significant changes in the molecular expression of key inflammasome-machinery components. The expression profile of these inflammasome components can be dynamically modulated in PBMCs after BS and vitamin D supplementation, suggesting that this profile could likely serve as a sensor and early predictor of the reversal of OB-related complications after BS.

Abstract
Obesity is a polygenic disorder which has become a global epidemic in recent years. Aim of the present study was to assess the theranostic potential of probiotics (Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium) and local herbs (fenugreek seeds, aloe vera) on the body weight, biochemical (liver and kidney functions) and histology of some internal organs (liver, kidney, ovary, small intestine) in obese rats. In present study, nanoemulsions of probiotics and local herbs were formulated by high energy method and characterized by FTIR and UV analysis. One hundred and sixty (1 6 0) female wistar rats were divided into sixteen groups. A high-fat diet was given to induce obesity in them. Obese rats were treated with different doses of probiotics, local herbs and their combination. Weekly body weight was monitored. Rats were dissected after fifteen weeks; blood and organs were harvested for biochemical analysis and histology. Results demonstrated a protective effect of nanoemulsion of probiotics and local herbs on the central vein, glomerulus, villi and normal ovulatory function of obese rats. Rats treated with a combination of probiotics and local herbs (fenugreek seeds, aloe vera) exhibited improved levels of bilirubin (4 mg/dl to15 mg/dl), AST from (110 U/L to 18 U/L) and ALT from (52 U/L to 10U/L). Similar renoprotective effects were recorded on the overall renal function tests (RFT). A combination of probiotics and local herbs in post treatment rats improved urea (63 mg/dl to 22 mg/dl) and creatinine (0.2 mg/dl to 0.8 mg/dl) levels. It was therefore evident that a combination of probiotics and local herbs has the potential to reverse the effects of obesity on the biochemical parameters and histological architecture of liver, kidney, small intestine and ovary. The overall results indicated that probiotics have positive effects of their own, but when combined with local herbs, they produced highly effective results in obese rats and therefore can be used as a complementary option in obese individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A high BMI is associated with various medical conditions, notably type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental health disorders. In the US military, BMI increased linearly between 1975 and 2015. OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study investigated the associations between BMI and a comprehensive range of clinically diagnosed medical conditions (CDMCs) in US military service members (SMs). METHODS A stratified random sample of SMs (n=26,177) completed an online questionnaire reporting their height, weight, and demographic/lifestyle characteristics. Medical conditions for 6 mo before questionnaire completion were obtained from a comprehensive military electronic medical surveillance system and grouped into 39 CDMCs covering both broad (largely systemic) and specific medical conditions. BMI was calculated as weight/height2 (kg/m2). The prevalence of CDMCs was compared among normal weight (<25.0 kg/m2), overweight (25.0-29.9 kg/m2), and obese (≥30 kg/m2) SMs. RESULTS After multivariable adjustment for demographic/lifestyle characteristics, higher BMI was associated with higher odds of a diagnosed medical condition in 30 of 39 CDMCs, with all 30 displaying dose-response relationships. The 5 major CDMCs with the largest odds ratios comparing obese to normal weight were endocrine/nutritional/metabolic diseases (OR=2.67, 95%CI=2.24-3.15), nervous system diseases (odds ratio [OR]=2.59, 95%CI=2.32-2.90), circulatory system diseases (OR=2.56, 95%CI=2.15-3.06), musculoskeletal system diseases (OR=1.92, 95%CI=1.76-2.09), and mental/behavioral disorders (OR=1.69, 95%CI=1.51-1.90). Compared with normal weight SMs, overweight or obese SMs had a higher number of CDMCs (1.8±1.9 vs. 2.0±2.0 and 2.5±2.3, mean ± standard deviation, respectively, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS In a young, physically active population, higher BMI was associated with a host of medical conditions, even after adjustment for demographic/lifestyle characteristics. The US Department of Defense should improve nutrition education and modify other factors that contribute to overweight and obesity. This study demonstrates that the medical burden of obesity is substantial in overweight and obese SMs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Literature examining the connection between obesity and burn injuries is limited. This study is a secondary analysis of a multicenter trial data set to investigate the association between burn outcomes and obesity following severe burn injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS Body mass index (BMI) was used to stratify patients as normal weight (NW; BMI 18.5-25), all obese (AO; any BMI>30), obese I (OI; BMI 30-34.9), obese II (OII; BMI 35-39.9), or obese III (OIII; BMI>40). The primary outcome examined was mortality. Secondary outcomes included hospital length of stay (LOS), number of transfusions, injury scores, infection occurrences, number of operations, ventilator days, intensive care unit LOS, and days to wound healing. RESULTS Of 335 patients included for study, 130 were obese. Median total body surface area (TBSA) was 31%, 77 patients (23%) had inhalation injury and 41 patients died. Inhalation injury was higher in OIII than NW (42.1% versus 20%, P = 0.03). Blood stream infections (BSI) were higher in OI versus NW (0.72 versus 0.33, P = 0.03). Total operations, ventilator days, days to wound healing, multiorgan dysfunction score, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluationscore, hospital LOS, and intensive care unit LOS were not significantly affected by BMI classification. Mortality was not significantly different between obesity groups. Kaplan-Meier survival curves did not significantly differ between the groups (χ2 = 0.025, P = 0.87). Multiple logistic regression identified age, TBSA, and full thickness burn as significant independent predictors (P < 0.05) of mortality; however, BMI classification itself was not predictive of mortality. CONCLUSIONS No significant association between obesity and mortality was seen after burn injury. Age, TBSA, and percent full- thickness burn were independent predictors of mortality after burn injury, while BMI classification was not.

Abstract
Background To evaluate the sex-specific associations of total and regional fat/muscle mass ratio (FMR) with cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and mortality, and to explore the underlying mechanisms driven by cardiometabolites and inflammatory cells. We compared the predictive value of FMRs to body mass index. Methods and Results This population-based, prospective cohort study included 468 885 UK Biobank participants free of CVD at baseline. Fat mass and muscle mass were estimated using a bioelectrical impedance assessment device. FMR was calculated as fat mass divided by muscle mass in corresponding body parts (total body, trunk, arm, and leg). Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models and mediation analyses were used. During 12.5 years of follow-up, we documented 49 936 CVD cases and 4158 CVD deaths. Higher total FMR was associated with an increased risk of incident CVD (hazard ratios [HRs] were 1.63 and 1.83 for men and women, respectively), ischemic heart disease (men: HR, 1.61; women: HR, 1.81), myocardial infarction (men: HR, 1.72; women: HR, 1.49), and congestive heart failure (men: HR, 2.25; women: HR, 2.57). The positive associations of FMRs with mortality from total CVD or its subtypes were significant mainly in trunk and arm for male patients (P for trend <0.05). We also identified 8 cardiometabolites and 5 inflammatory cells that partially mediated FMR-CVD associations. FMRs were modestly better at discriminating cardiovascular mortality risk. Conclusions Higher total and regional FMRs were associated with an increased risk of CVD and mortality, partly mediated through cardiometabolites and inflammatory cells. Early monitoring of FMR should be considered to alleviate CVD risk. FMRs were superior to body mass index in predicting CVD mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior studies indicate significant physiological differences between obese and nonobese patients with heart failure (HF), but none have evaluated differences in hemodynamic patterns in these patient populations during treatment for acute decompensated HF (ADHF). OBJECTIVES In this study, we assessed differences in hemodynamic trends between obese and nonobese patients during treatment for ADHF. METHODS Obese (body mass index (BMI) >30, n = 63) and nonobese (BMI < 25, n = 69) patients with ADHF in the Evaluation Study of Congestive Heart Failure and Pulmonary Artery Catheterization Effectiveness (ESCAPE) study who had pulmonary artery catheterization data available through the duration of treatment were evaluated. Hemodynamics were analyzed at baseline and optimal day. Changes in BNP levels, weight, creatinine, BUN, 6MWT, orthopnea and dyspnea scores were assessed. RESULTS Despite similar baseline hemodynamics, obese patients had significantly less absolute and relative pulmonary arterial wedge pressure (PAWP) reduction (-16 ± 28 vs -32 ± 29%; P = 0.03) during treatment. Obese patients also had higher PAWPs (19.9 + 8 vs 15.5 + 6.8 mmHg; P = 0.01) and PA pressures at optimization compared with nonobese patients. Obese and nonobese patients had similar relative improvements in weight, BNP, 6-minute walk test distance, dyspnea and orthopnea scores, and similar changes in creatinine and BUN levels. CONCLUSIONS Obese patients treated for ADHF display less reduction in invasively measured left heart filling pressures, despite similar improvements in symptoms, weight loss, and noninvasive surrogates of congestion. Our findings suggest a degree of decoupling between left heart filling pressures and congestive symptoms in obese patients undergoing treatment for ADHF.

Abstract
PURPOSE Research about using reduced-rank regression (RRR) to simultaneously study the effects of both individual and combined consumption of foods on cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is scarce. METHODS This study included 116,711 CVD-free participants (a median of 11.8 year follow-up) with 2 or more 24-h online dietary assessments. A total of 210 food items were classified into 45 food groups, and the mean amount of each food group was used in RRR to derive dietary patterns (DPs) explaining the maximum shared variation in obesity-related indicators. The associations of DPs and its main food groups (|factor loading| [Formula: see text] 0.2) with the incident CVD and all-cause mortality were examined by Cox model. In cross-sectional analyses, the associations of DP scores with cardiometabolic risk factors (biomarkers) were examined by linear regression. RESULTS The derived DP was characterized by higher intakes of beer and cider, high-sugar beverages, processed meat, red meat, artificial sweetener, and crisps, chips and savory snacks, and lower intakes of olive oil, high fiber breakfast cereals, tea, and vegetable. Compared to the lowest dietary score quintile, those in the highest were associated with higher risks of total CVD (adjusted-HR: 1.45, 95% CI 1.33-1.57) and all-cause mortality (adjusted-HR 1.31, 95% CI 1.18-1.45). We observed consumption alone of these food groups had a consistent but limited health effect on total CVD and all-cause death incidence. These associations were modified by age and sex. Higher DP scores were related to adverse biomarkers profiles. CONCLUSIONS We developed obesity-related DPs prospectively associated with increased risks of CVD and all-cause mortality.

Abstract
Sociological research suggests that violent environments contribute to excess weight, a pressing health issue worldwide. However, this research has neglected extreme forms of violence, such as armed conflicts, a theoretically significant omission because armed conflict could reasonably lead to weight loss, not weight gain. I examine the weight-related, short-term consequences of the Mexican "War on Organized Crime." I combine body mass index (N = 3,341) and waist circumference (N = 3,509) measures from the Mexico Family Life Survey with a novel data set on aggressions, confrontations, and executions between 2009 and 2011 (CIDE-PPD database) and exploit variation in the timing of the outcome relative to violent events taking place in the same residential environment. I find a robust and large positive association between armed conflict events and weight gain in adults and suggestive evidence of the behavioral, emotional, and physiological/biochemical pathways connecting those variables.

Abstract
BACKGROUND MicroRNA-33 may control a wide range of different metabolic functions. METHODS This study aims to assess the miR-33a circulating profile in normal-weight (N = 20) and obese (O = 30) adolescents and to correlate its expression levels to their metabolic parameters. In a subset of subjects, we compared circulating miR-33a with exosomal miR-33a. RESULTS Metabolic parameters were altered in O, with initial hyperinsulinemia. Circulating miR-33a was significantly higher in O than in N (p = 0.0002). Significant correlations between miR-33a and auxological and metabolic indices (Insulin p = 0.01; Cholesterol p = 0.01; LDL p = 0.01; HbA1c p = 0.01) were found. Splitting our population (O + N) into two groups, according to the median value of mRNA expression miR-33a levels (0.701), irrespective of the presence or absence of obesity, we observed that those having a higher expression of miR-33a were more frequently obese (87.5% vs. 12.5%; p < 0.0001) and had significantly increased values of auxological and metabolic parameters. Exosomes extracted from plasma of N and O carried miR-33a, and its expression was lower in O (p = 0.026). No correlations with metabolic parameters were observed. CONCLUSION While exosome miR-33a does not provide any advantage, circulating miR-33a can provide important indications in an initial phase of metabolic dysfunction, stratifying obese adolescents at higher cardiometabolic risk.

Abstract
Background Several cardiovascular (CV) risk factors are reported to be associated with abnormal cardiac structure in children and adults. However, no study has assessed the association between clustering of multiple CV risk factors and left ventricular geometric (LVG) remodeling. We examined the association between clustering of CV risk factors and LVG remodeling among Chinese children. Methods This cross-sectional study included 1,406 children aged 6-11 years. Clustering of CV risk factors was quantified as the sum of the number of five CV risk factors (abdominal obesity, elevated blood pressure, high fasting blood glucose, high triglycerides and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol). Based on left ventricular mass index and relative wall thickness (RWT), left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), high RWT and LVG remodeling [concentric remodeling (CR), eccentric hypertrophy (EH) and concentric hypertrophy (CH)] were defined. Results Compared to participants without CV risk factor, those with 1, 2 and ≥3 risk factors were at increased risk of LVH [ORs (95% CIs): 3.49 (2.19-5.56), 5.53 (3.20-9.55), and 19.19 (9.67-38.08), respectively]; corresponding values for high RWT were 2.47 (1.63-3.74), 3.76 (2.25-6.27), and 5.47 (2.65-11.28). Similar associations between clustering of CV risk factors and LVG remodeling were found [CR: 1.71 (1.06-2.76), 2.83 (1.54-5.18), and 3.82 (1.37-10.62); EH: 2.42 (1.42-4.11), 4.23 (2.24-7.96), and 16.86 (7.70-36.92); CH: 14.92 (4.41-50.47), 23.15 (6.32-84.83), and 71.19 (17.09-296.56)]. Conclusion CV risk factors in isolation and combination were associated with an increased risk of LVH, high RWT and LVG remodeling among children, emphasizing the need to consider multiple risk factors when assessing the risk of cardiac outcomes.

Abstract
Onions are rich in bioactive compounds and have been found to prevent various chronic diseases, including obesity. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the antiobesity effect of onions. Studies were identified in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and CENTRAL focusing on clinical trials evaluating the antiobesity effects of onion in obese subjects. The risk of bias in the studies was evaluated using Cochrane's Risk of Bias tool. The effect of onions was analyzed using data from the selected studies, and the results were indicated by weighted mean difference with 95% CI. The I 2 static test was used to examine heterogeneity between the studies. A total of 38 studies were reviewed, of which five clinical trials meeting the criteria were selected. As investigational products, onion peels were used in four studies and onions were used in one study. Following systematic review, it was determined that the risk of bias was generally low, and body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and triglyceride levels were significantly reduced in the onion groups compared to the placebo. In conclusion, onion intake had an antiobesity effect by reducing body weight and body fat, and this effect was particularly pronounced with onion peel.
