Integrated Piezoelectric/Pyroelectric Sensing from Organic-Inorganic Perovskite Nanocomposites

Flexible ferroelectric materials are in high demand in emerging energy harvesting and self-powered sensing electronics. However, current flexible ferroelectric polymers, such as poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and P(VDF-co-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)], cannot fulfill the requirement of emerging applications because of their low piezoelectric/pyroelectric performance. In this work, using organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite [(4-aminotetrahydropyran)2PbBr2Cl2] ferroelectric nanorods as reinforcement and P(VDF-TrFE) as the matrix, we prepared flexible core-sheath piezoelectric nanofibers and pyroelectric nanocomposite films. The core-sheath nanofibers possess a record-high piezoelectric coefficient of 78.1 pC·N-1, and the output voltage reaches to 192 V, with the maximum power density of 1.04 W·m-2. On the other hand, the nanocomposite film exhibits a high pyroelectric coefficient of 58.2 μC·m-2·K-1 at 333 K, which yields a voltage of 6.1 V under 6.6 K temperature fluctuation. An integrated flexible sensing device was prepared by combining piezoelectric nanofibers and pyroelectric films, which can wirelessly detect vibration and temperature fluctuation simultaneously. The integrated device is suitable for pipelines, power equipment, and other scenarios, where vibration and temperature need to be monitored at the same time.

Synergistic Molecular Alignment and Dipole Polarization in Stretched Nafion/Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Blend Membranes for High Proton Conduction in PEMFCs

The nanostructure of Nafion and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) blend membranes is successfully aligned through a mechanical uniaxial stretching method. The phase-separated morphology of Nafion molecules distinctly forms hydrophilic proton channels with increased connectivity, resulting in enhanced proton conductivity. Additionally, the crystalline phase of PVDF molecules undergoes a successful transformation from the α- to β-phase during membrane stretching, demonstrating an alignment of fluorine and hydrogen atoms with a TTTT(trans) structure. The aligned nanostructure of the blend film, combined with the dipole polarization of the β-phase PVDF, synergistically enhances the proton conduction through the membrane for operating proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The controlled structures of the blend membranes are thoroughly investigated using atomic force microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. Furthermore, the improved in-plane proton conductivity facilitates increased proton conduction at the interface between the membrane and catalyst layer in the membrane-electrode assembly, ultimately enhancing the power generation of PEMFCs.

Ingenious Structure Engineering to Enhance Piezoelectricity in Poly(vinylidene fluoride) for Biomedical Applications

The future development of wearable/implantable sensing and medical devices relies on substrates with excellent flexibility, stability, biocompatibility, and self-powered capabilities. Enhancing the energy efficiency and convenience is crucial, and converting external mechanical energy into electrical energy is a promising strategy for long-term advancement. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), known for its piezoelectricity, is an outstanding representative of an electroactive polymer. Ingeniously designed PVDF-based polymers have been fabricated as piezoelectric devices for various applications. Notably, the piezoelectric performance of PVDF-based platforms is determined by their structural characteristics at different scales. This Review highlights how researchers can strategically engineer structures on microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic scales. We discuss advanced research on PVDF-based piezoelectric platforms with diverse structural designs in biomedical sensing, disease diagnosis, and treatment. Ultimately, we try to give perspectives for future development trends of PVDF-based piezoelectric platforms in biomedicine, providing valuable insights for further research.

Ferroelectric, flexoelectric and photothermal coupling in PVDF-based composites for flexible photoelectric sensors

A ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film with excellent flexibility possesses great potential for photodetection and wearable devices. However, the relatively weak photo-absorption and the consequent small photocurrent limit its photofunctional properties. Herein, we embedded a strongly visible-light active material system, 0.5Ba(Zr0.08Ti0.8Mn0.12)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (BZTM-BCT) loaded with Ag and Au nanoparticles, into a PVDF film, which demonstrates a significantly higher photovoltaic response in the whole visible light range with a β-phase content of over 90%. In a state of "bending + poling", the PVDF/BZTM-BCT:Au film presents an optimal response for photoelectric properties by exhibiting a photocurrent that is 57 times higher than that of a pure PVDF film when illuminated with 405 nm LED light at 100 mW cm-2. Photoexcitation and thermal excitation jointly contribute to the generation of free carriers, while the flexoelectric and ferroelectric coupling electric field provides a greater driving force for carrier separation and transport. More interestingly, composite film-based photoelectric sensors can simultaneously respond to light and the movement and deformation of contacted things, indicating its potential in versatile applications. Overall, this work puts forward a new route for designing new flexible multifunctional photoelectric devices.

Composite Nanoarchitectonics of Electrospun Piezoelectric PVDF/AgNPs for Biomedical Applications, Including Breast Cancer Treatment

This study focused on preparing composite nanomats by incorporating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers through the electrospinning process. A short review of piezoelectric PVDF-related research is presented. PVDF is known for its biocompatibility and piezoelectric properties. Since electrical signals in biological tissues have been shown to be relevant for therapeutic applications, the influence of the addition of AgNPs to PVDF on its piezoelectricity is studied, due to the ability of AgNPs to increase the piezoelectric signal, along with providing antibacterial properties. The prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition, the biological activity of composites was examined using a cytotoxicity assay and an assessment of the antibacterial activity. The obtained results show that the incorporation of AgNPs into PVDF nanofibers further enhances the piezoelectricity (crystalline β-phase fraction), already improved by the electrospinning process, compared to solution-casted samples, but only with a AgNPs/PVDF concentration of up to 0.3%; a further increase in the nanoparticles led to a β-phase reduction. The cytotoxicity assay showed a promising effect of PVDF/AgNPs nanofibers on the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line, following the non-toxicity displayed in regard to the healthy MRC-5 cell line. The antibacterial effect of PVDF/AgNPs nanofibers showed promising antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, as a result of the Ag content. The anticancer activity, combined with the electrical properties of nanofibers, presents new possibilities for smart, multifunctional materials for cancer treatment development.

Piezoelectric Biomaterials Inspired by Nature for Applications in Biomedicine and Nanotechnology

Bioelectricity provides electrostimulation to regulate cell/tissue behaviors and functions. In the human body, bioelectricity can be generated in electromechanically responsive tissues and organs, as well as biomolecular building blocks that exhibit piezoelectricity, with a phenomenon known as the piezoelectric effect. Inspired by natural bio-piezoelectric phenomenon, efforts have been devoted to exploiting high-performance synthetic piezoelectric biomaterials, including molecular materials, polymeric materials, ceramic materials, and composite materials. Notably, piezoelectric biomaterials polarize under mechanical strain and generate electrical potentials, which can be used to fabricate electronic devices. Herein, a review article is proposed to summarize the design and research progress of piezoelectric biomaterials and devices toward bionanotechnology. First, the functions of bioelectricity in regulating human electrophysiological activity from cellular to tissue level are introduced. Next, recent advances as well as structure-property relationship of various natural and synthetic piezoelectric biomaterials are provided in detail. In the following part, the applications of piezoelectric biomaterials in tissue engineering, drug delivery, biosensing, energy harvesting, and catalysis are systematically classified and discussed. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of piezoelectric biomaterials are presented. It is believed that this review will provide inspiration for the design and development of innovative piezoelectric biomaterials in the fields of biomedicine and nanotechnology.

Biodegradable Ferroelectric Molecular Plastic Crystal HOCH2(CF2)7CH2OH Structurally Inspired by Polyvinylidene Fluoride

Ferroelectric materials, traditionally comprising inorganic ceramics and polymers, are commonly used in medical implantable devices. However, their nondegradable nature often necessitates secondary surgeries for removal. In contrast, ferroelectric molecular crystals have the advantages of easy solution processing, lightweight, and good biocompatibility, which are promising candidates for transient (short-term) implantable devices. Despite these benefits, the discovered biodegradable ferroelectric materials remain limited due to the absence of efficient design strategies. Here, inspired by the polar structure of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), a ferroelectric molecular crystal 1H,1H,9H,9H-perfluoro-1,9-nonanediol (PFND), which undergoes a cubic-to-monoclinic ferroelectric plastic phase transition at 339 K, is discovered. This transition is facilitated by a 2D hydrogen bond network formed through O-H···O interactions among the oriented PFND molecules, which is crucial for the manifestation of ferroelectric properties. In this sense, by reducing the number of -CF2- groups from ≈5 000 in PVDF to seven in PFND, it is demonstrated that this ferroelectric compound only needs simple solution processing while maintaining excellent biosafety, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. This work illuminates the path toward the development of new biodegradable ferroelectric molecular crystals, offering promising avenues for biomedical applications.

Alternatives to Fluoropolymers for Motion-Based Energy Harvesting: Perspectives on Piezoelectricity, Triboelectricity, Ferroelectrets, and Flexoelectricity

Fluoropolymers, including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon), polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), and fluorine kautschuk materials (FKMs, Viton) are critical polymers for applications ranging from non-stick coatings, corrosion resistant seals, semiconductor manufacturing, membranes, and energy harvesting technologies. However, the synthesis of these fluoropolymers requires the use of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) known colloquially as "forever chemicals," and as such there is a pressing need to develop alternative technologies that can serve the end-use of fluoropolymers without the environmental cost of using PFAS. Further, fluoropolymers themselves fall under the PFAS umbrella. Here, alternative mechanical-to-electrical energy harvesting polymers are reviewed and benchmarked against the leading fluoropolymer energy harvesters. These alternative technologies include nonfluoropolymer piezoelectric polymers, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), ferroelectric elastomers, and flexoelectric polymers. A vision towards sustainable, non-fluoropolymer-based energy harvesting is provided.

Piezoelectric biomaterials with embedded ionic liquids for improved orthopedic interfaces through osseointegration and antibacterial dual characteristics

Orthopedic implant failures, primarily attributed to aseptic loosening and implant site infections, pose significant challenges to patient recovery and lead to revision surgeries. Combining piezoelectric materials with ionic liquids as interfaces for orthopedic implants presents an innovative approach to addressing both issues simultaneously. In this study, films of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) incorporated with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([Emim][HSO4]) ionic liquid were developed. These films exhibited strong antibacterial properties, effectively reducing biofilm formation, thereby addressing implant-related infections. Furthermore, stem cell-based differentiation assays exposed the potential of the composite materials to induce osteogenesis. Interestingly, our findings also revealed the upregulation of calcium channel expression as a result of electromechanical stimulation, pointing to a mechanistic basis for the observed biological effects. This work highlights the potential of piezoelectric materials with ionic liquids to improve the longevity and biocompatibility of orthopedic implants. Offering dual-functionality for infection prevention and bone integration, these advancements hold significant potential for advancing orthopedic implant technologies and improving patient outcomes.

High Performance Piezoelectric Nanogenerators Based on Polyvinylidene Fluoride-Graphene Nanoribbon Composite Thin Films

In this study, a highly efficient, sensitive, and lightweight piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) is developed using graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) incorporated into the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix. Unzipping multi-walled carbon nanotubes is an effective and scalable strategy for synthesizing graphene nanoribbons. The synthesized GNRs are employed to prepare nanometer-scale piezoelectric polymer composite films showing higher piezoelectric performance than neat PVDF. The impact of GNR concentration in the PVDF matrix on the electroactive phase content and piezoelectric properties of the composites is systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis demonstrate an increase in the electroactive β and γ phases of PVDF by incorporating GNRs in the composites. With the optimized concentration of GNRs (1 wt%), the fabricated piezoelectric device can generate open-circuit voltage and an output power density of 26 V and 16.52 µWcm2, respectively. It is also found that the PVDF-GNR 1 nanogenerator can be used to generate electrical power by converting mechanical energy from different human activities such as wrist bending, palm tapping, and toe tapping. The findings indicate that (PVDF-GNR 1) PENG can be applied in self-powered portable and wearable electronic devices.

Self-Poled Piezoelectric Nanocomposite Fiber Sensors for Wireless Monitoring of Physiological Signals

Self-powered sensors have the potential to enable real-time health monitoring without contributing to the ever-growing demand for energy. Piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) respond to mechanical deformations to produce electrical signals, imparting a sensing capability without external power sources. Textiles conform to the human body and serve as an interactive biomechanical energy harvesting and sensing medium without compromising comfort. However, the textile-based PENG fabrication process is complex and lacks scalability, making these devices impractical for mass production. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of a long-length PENG fiber compatible with industrial-scale manufacturing. The thermal drawing process enables the one-step fabrication of self-poled MoS2-poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposite fiber devices integrated with electrodes. Heat and stress during thermal drawing and MoS2 nanoparticle addition facilitate interfacial polarization and dielectric modulation to enhance the output performance. The fibers show a 57 and 70% increase in the output voltage and current compared to the pristine PVDF fiber, respectively, at a considerably low MoS2 loading of 3 wt %. The low Young's modulus of the outer cladding ensures an effective stress transfer to the piezocomposite domain and allows minute motion detection. The flexible fibers demonstrate wireless, self-powered physiological sensing and biomotion analysis capability. The study aims to guide the large-scale production of highly sensitive integrated fibers to enable textile-based and plug-and-play wearable sensors.

Fabrication of nanoparticle array membranes by integrating semi-crystalline polymer self-assembly with NIPS for water treatment

The integration of polymer self-assembly with non-solvent induced phase separation (SNIPS) represents a recent advancement in membrane fabrication. This breakthrough allows for the fabrication of membranes with uniformly sized pores, enabling precise and fast separation through a phase inversion process commonly used in industrial fabrication. Currently, block copolymers are used in implementing the SNIPS strategy. In order to facilitate an easier and more flexible fabrication procedure, we employed the widely used semi-crystalline polymer polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the base material for achieving SNIPS through self-seeding. This process involves filtering the PVDF casting solution to induce microphase separation and generate crystal seeds. Subsequently, NIPS is applied to enable the growth of crystal seeds into uniformly distributed nanoparticles with consistent size and shape, ultimately resulting in a membrane with a uniform pore size. The fabricated membrane exhibited improved flux (2924.67 ± 28.02 L m-2 h-1 at 0.5 bar) and rejection (91% for 500 nm polystyrene particles). Notably, the microphase separation in the casting solution is a distinguishing feature of the SNIPS compared to NIPS. In this study, we found that the microphase separation of semi-crystalline polymers is also crucial for achieving membranes with uniform pore sizes. This finding may extend the potential application of the SNIPS strategy to include semi-crystalline polymers.

Preparation and Structure-Property Relationship Study of Piezoelectric-Conductive Composite Polymer Nanofiber Materials for Bone Tissue Engineering

This study aimed to develop Janus-, cross-network-, and coaxial-structured piezoelectric-conductive polymer nanofibers through electrospinning to mimic the piezoelectricity of bone and facilitate the conduction of electrical signals in bone tissue repair. These nanofibers were constructed using the piezoelectric polymer polyvinylidene fluoride, and the conductive fillers reduced graphene oxide and polypyrrole. The influence of structural features on the electroactivity of the fibers was also explored. The morphology and components of the various structural samples were characterized using SEM, TEM, and FTIR. The electroactivity of the materials was assessed with a quasi-static d33 meter and the four-probe method. The results revealed that the piezoelectric-conductive phases were successfully integrated. The Janus-structured nanofibers demonstrated the best electroactivity, with a piezoelectric constant d33 of 24.5 pC/N and conductivity of 6.78 × 10-2 S/m. The tensile tests and MIP measurements showed that all samples had porosity levels exceeding 70%. The tensile strength of the Janus and cross-network structures exceeded that of the periosteum (3-4 MPa), with average pore sizes of 1194.36 and 2264.46 nm, respectively. These properties indicated good mechanical performance, allowing material support while preventing fibroblast invasion. The CCK-8 and ALP tests indicated that the Janus-structured samples were biocompatible and significantly promoted the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells.

Electrospun polarity-controlled molecular orientation for synergistic performance of an artifact-free piezoelectric anisotropic sensor

Anisotropy in mechanical, optical and thermal sensors in a spatial direction has many applications in health care, robotics, aerospace, and tissue engineering. In particular, wearable and implantable sensors respond to stretching and bending strains that probe mechanical energy and track physiological signals. Hence, the development of anisotropic pressure sensors with true piezoelectric (PE) signals is of utmost importance to achieve efficient devices. Herein, a simple and efficient method is developed for high longitudinal and transverse responses, with an approach to isolating a true piezoelectric signal. The electrospun (ES) polarity of oriented dipoles inside flexible fibers gives rise to a high longitudinal/transverse PE response of both lateral and transverse strains. Nanofibers of poly(vinylidene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) copolymers contain poled dipoles, up to 86%, that promote an enhanced PE coefficient of 42 pm V-1 in the case of negative polarity-based electrospinning. It is 40% higher in composition than the commonly adopted positive polarity-biased electrospinning process. We demonstrated the advantage of such a high PE coefficient by the enhanced sensitivity of the longitudinal (VLs = 0.3 V kPa-1, ILs = 0.07 μA kPa-1) as well as transverse (VTs = 1.0 V kPa-1, ITs = 0.8 μA kPa-1) PE response. To counter the ambiguity of high transverse response as compared to longitudinal in electrospun fiber-based devices, a facile method is proposed to isolate the ferroelectret, triboelectric and piezoelectric signals in a fiber-based hybrid device with their independent charge generation mechanisms.

From electricity to vitality: the emerging use of piezoelectric materials in tissue regeneration

The unique ability of piezoelectric materials to generate electricity spontaneously has attracted widespread interest in the medical field. In addition to the ability to convert mechanical stress into electrical energy, piezoelectric materials offer the advantages of high sensitivity, stability, accuracy and low power consumption. Because of these characteristics, they are widely applied in devices such as sensors, controllers and actuators. However, piezoelectric materials also show great potential for the medical manufacturing of artificial organs and for tissue regeneration and repair applications. For example, the use of piezoelectric materials in cochlear implants, cardiac pacemakers and other equipment may help to restore body function. Moreover, recent studies have shown that electrical signals play key roles in promoting tissue regeneration. In this context, the application of electrical signals generated by piezoelectric materials in processes such as bone healing, nerve regeneration and skin repair has become a prospective strategy. By mimicking the natural bioelectrical environment, piezoelectric materials can stimulate cell proliferation, differentiation and connection, thereby accelerating the process of self-repair in the body. However, many challenges remain to be overcome before these concepts can be applied in clinical practice, including material selection, biocompatibility and equipment design. On the basis of the principle of electrical signal regulation, this article reviews the definition, mechanism of action, classification, preparation and current biomedical applications of piezoelectric materials and discusses opportunities and challenges for their future clinical translation.

High energy capability in poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) nanocomposite incorporated with Ag@polyaniline@covalent organic framework core-shell nanowire

The development of polymer film with large electrical displacement is essential for the applications of lightweight and compact energy storage. The dielectric diversity at interface of polymer composite should be addressed to realize the film capacitor with high energy density and dielectric reliability. In this work, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE)) nanocomposite was incorporated by core-shell nanowire with covalent organic framework (COF) outer coating to alleviate the dielectric mismatch at interface. After the preparation of Ag nanowire through polyol reduction, polyaniline (PANI) and COF layers were sequentially deposited to construct core-shell Ag@polyaniline@covalent organic framework (Ag@PANI@COF) nanowire. According to the unique core-shell architecture, the COF framework is utilized to suppress the remanent polarization while high electrical displacement is preserved by the center Ag nanowire. The maximum energy density of 25.0 J/cm3 at 425 MV/m is obtained in 0.1 wt% stretched Ag@PANI@COF/P(VDF-CTFE) nanocomposite. The presence of core-shell nanowire depresses the distribution distortion of electric field and the diffusion of charge carriers under high field. This work demonstrates an effective method to develop the polymer film with large electrical displacement, and sheds a light on insightful exploration of interfacial polarized mechanism in polymer dielectric composite.

Development of Highly Flexible Piezoelectric PVDF-TRFE/Reduced Graphene Oxide Doped Electrospun Nano-Fibers for Self-Powered Pressure Sensor

The demand for self-powered, flexible, and wearable electronic devices has been increasing in recent years for physiological and biomedical applications in real-time detection due to their higher flexibility and stretchability. This work fabricated a highly sensitive, self-powered wearable microdevice with Poly-Vinylidene Fluoride-Tetra Fluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) nano-fibers using an electrospinning technique. The dielectric response of the polymer was improved by incorporating the reduced-graphene-oxide (rGO) multi-walled carbon nano-tubes (MWCNTs) through doping. The dielectric behavior and piezoelectric effect were improved through the stretching and orientation of polymeric chains. The outermost layer was attained by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of conductive polymer poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) to enhance the electrical conductivity and sensitivity. The hetero-structured nano-composite comprises PVDF-TrFE doped with rGO-MWCNTs over poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), forming continuous self-assembly. The piezoelectric pressure sensor is capable of detecting human physiological vital signs. The pressure sensor exhibits a high-pressure sensitivity of 19.09 kPa-1, over a sensing range of 1.0 Pa to 25 kPa, and excellent cycling stability of 10,000 cycles. The study reveals that the piezoelectric pressure sensor has superior sensing performance and is capable of monitoring human vital signs, including heartbeat and wrist pulse, masticatory movement, voice recognition, and eye blinking signals. The research work demonstrates that the device could potentially eliminate metallic sensors and be used for early disease diagnosis in biomedical and personal healthcare applications.

Piezoelectric Energy Harvester Technologies: Synthesis, Mechanisms, and Multifunctional Applications

Piezoelectric energy harvesters have gained significant attention in recent years due to their ability to convert ambient mechanical vibrations into electrical energy, which opens up new possibilities for environmental monitoring, asset tracking, portable technologies and powering remote "Internet of Things (IoT)" nodes and sensors. This review explores various aspects of piezoelectric energy harvesters, discussing the structural designs and fabrication techniques including inorganic-based energy harvesters (i.e., piezoelectric ceramics and ZnO nanostructures) and organic-based energy harvesters (i.e., polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and its copolymers). The factors affecting the performance and several strategies to improve the efficiency of devices have been also explored. In addition, this review also demonstrated the progress in flexible energy harvesters with integration of flexibility and stretchability for next-generation wearable technologies used for body motion and health monitoring devices. The applications of the above devices to harvest various forms of mechanical energy are explored, as well as the discussion on perspectives and challenges in this field.

Characterization of Modified PVDF Membranes Using Fourier Transform Infrared and Raman Microscopy and Infrared Nanoimaging: Challenges and Advantages of Individual Methods

Polymer materials are integral to diverse scientific fields, including chemical engineering and biochemical research, as well as analytical and physical chemistry. This study focuses on the characterization of modified poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes from both physical and chemical perspectives. Unfortunately, current surface characterization methods face various challenges when simultaneously measuring diverse material properties such as morphology and chemical composition. Addressing this issue, we introduce infrared scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy (IR-sSNOM), a modern technique with the ability to overcome limitations and provide simultaneous topographical, mechanical, and chemical information. We demonstrate the capabilities of IR-sSNOM for investigation of four samples of PVDF membranes modified with 2-(methacryloyloxyethyl)trimethylammonium iodide and/or methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine in various ratios. These membranes, desirable for their specific properties, represent a challenging material for analysis due to their thermal instability and mechanical vulnerability. Employing Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microscopy, IR-sSNOM, and Raman microscopy, we successfully overcame these challenges by carefully selecting the experimental parameters and performing detailed characterization of the polymer samples. Valuable insights into morphological and chemical homogeneity, the abundance of modifying side chains, and the distribution of different crystal phases of PVDF were obtained. Most notably, the presence of modifying side chains was confirmed by FTIR microscopy, the Raman spectral mapping revealed the distribution of crystalline phases of the studied polymer, and the IR-sSNOM showed the abundance of chemically diverse aggregates on the surface of the membranes, thanks to the unique nanometer-scale resolution and chemical sensitivity of this technique. This comprehensive approach represents a powerful toolset for characterization of polymeric materials at the nano- and microscale. We believe that this methodology can be applied to similar samples, provided that their thermal stability is considered, opening avenues for detailed exploration of physical and chemical properties in various scientific applications.

The Effect of Electric Aging on Vinylidene Fluoride Copolymers for Ferroelectric Memory

Copolymers based on vinylidene fluoride are potential materials for ferroelectric memory elements. The trend in studies showing that a decrease in the degree of crystallinity can lead to an unexpected increase in the electric breakdown field is noted. An analysis of the literature data reveals that in fluorine-containing ferroelectric polymers, when using a bipolar triangular field, the hysteresis loop has an unclosed shape, with each subsequent loop being accompanied by a decrease in the dielectric response. In this work, the effect of the structure of self-polarized films of copolymers of vinylidene fluoride with tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene on breakdown processes was studied. The structure of the polymer films was monitored using infrared spectroscopy (IR) and X-ray diffraction. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) was applied to characterize the local electrical properties of the polymers. For the films of the first copolymer, which crystallize in the polar β-phase, asymmetry in the dielectric response was observed at fields greater than the coercive field. For the films of the copolymers of vinylidene fluoride with hexafluoropropylene, which crystallize predominantly in the nonpolar α-phase, polarization switching processes have also been observed, but at lower electric fields. The noted phenomena will help to identify the influence of the structure of ferroelectric polymers on their electrical properties.

The past 10 years of molecular ferroelectrics: structures, design, and properties

Ferroelectricity, which has diverse important applications such as memory elements, capacitors, and sensors, was first discovered in a molecular compound, Rochelle salt, in 1920 by Valasek. Owing to their superiorities of lightweight, biocompatibility, structural tunability, mechanical flexibility, etc., the past decade has witnessed the renaissance of molecular ferroelectrics as promising complementary materials to commercial inorganic ferroelectrics. Thus, on the 100th anniversary of ferroelectricity, it is an opportune time to look into the future, specifically into how to push the boundaries of material design in molecular ferroelectric systems and finally overcome the hurdles to their commercialization. Herein, we present a comprehensive and accessible review of the appealing development of molecular ferroelectrics over the past 10 years, with an emphasis on their structural diversity, chemical design, exceptional properties, and potential applications. We believe that it will inspire intense, combined research efforts to enrich the family of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics and attract widespread interest from physicists and chemists to better understand the structure-function relationships governing improved applied functional device engineering.

Progress in the development of piezoelectric biomaterials for tissue remodeling

Piezoelectric biomaterials have demonstrated significant potential in the past few decades to heal damaged tissue and restore cellular functionalities. Herein, we discuss the role of bioelectricity in tissue remodeling and explore ways to mimic such tissue-like properties in synthetic biomaterials. In the past decade, biomedical engineers have adopted emerging functional biomaterials-based tissue engineering approaches using innovative bioelectronic stimulation protocols based on dynamic stimuli to direct cellular activation, proliferation, and differentiation on engineered biomaterial constructs. The primary focus of this review is to discuss the concepts of piezoelectric energy harvesting, piezoelectric materials, and their application in soft (skin and neural) and hard (dental and bone) tissue regeneration. While discussing the prospective applications as an engineered tissue, an important distinction has been made between piezoceramics, piezopolymers, and their composites. The superiority of piezopolymers over piezoceramics to circumvent issues such as stiffness mismatch, biocompatibility, and biodegradability are highlighted. We aim to provide a comprehensive review of the field and identify opportunities for the future to develop clinically relevant and state-of-the-art biomaterials for personalized and remote health care.

Electroactive poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/graphene composites for cardiac tissue engineering applications

Electroactive materials are increasingly being used in strategies to regenerate cardiac tissue. These materials, particularly those with electrical conductivity, are used to actively recreate the electromechanical nature of the cardiac tissue. In the present work, we describe a novel combination of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)), a highly electroactive polymer, with graphene (G), exhibiting high electrical conductivity. G/P(VDF-TrFE) films have been characterized in terms of topographical, physico-chemical, mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, and studied the response of cardiomyocytes adhering to them. The results indicate that the crystallinity and the wettability of the composites remain almost unaffected after G incorporation. In turn, surface roughness, Young modulus, and electric properties are higher in G/P(VDF-TrFE). Finally, the composites are highly biocompatible and able to support cardiomyocyte adhesion and proliferation, particularly surface treated ones, demonstrating the suitability of these materials for cardiac tissue engineering applications.

Architecting the Microenvironment Skeleton of Active Materials in High-Capacity Electrodes by Self-Assembled Nano-Building Blocks

In analogy to the cell microenvironment in biology, understanding and controlling the active-material microenvironment (ME@AM) microstructures in battery electrodes is essential to the successes of energy storage devices. However, this is extremely difficult for especially high-capacity active materials (AMs) like sulfur, due to the poor controlling on the electrode microstructures. To conquer this challenge, here, a semi-dry strategy based on self-assembled nano-building blocks is reported to construct nest-like robust ME@AM skeleton in a solvent-and-stress-less way. To do that, poly(vinylidene difluoride) nanoparticle binder is coated onto carbon-nanofibers (NB@CNF) via the nanostorm technology developed in the lab, to form self-assembled nano-building blocks in the dry slurry. After compressed into an electrode prototype, the self-assembled dry-slurry is then bonded by in-situ nanobinder solvation. With this strategy, mechanically strong thick sulfur electrodes are successfully fabricated without cracking and exhibit high capacity and good C-rate performance even at a high AM loading (25.0 mg cm-2 by 90 wt% in the whole electrode). This study may not only bring a promising solution to dry manufacturing of batteries, but also uncover the ME@AM structuring mechanism with nano-binder for guiding the design and control on electrode microstructures.

Hierarchical Piezoelectric Composites for Noninvasive Continuous Cardiovascular Monitoring

Continuous monitoring of blood pressure (BP) and multiparametric analysis of cardiac functions are crucial for the early diagnosis and therapy of cardiovascular diseases. However, existing monitoring approaches often suffer from bulky and intrusive apparatus, cumbersome testing procedures, and challenging data processing, hampering their applications in continuous monitoring. Here, a heterogeneously hierarchical piezoelectric composite is introduced for wearable continuous BP and cardiac function monitoring, overcoming the rigidity of ceramic and the insensitivity of polymer. By optimizing the hierarchical structure and components of the composite, the developed piezoelectric sensor delivers impressive performances, ensuring continuous and accurate monitoring of BP at Grade A level. Furthermore, the hemodynamic parameters are extracted from the detected signals, such as local pulse wave velocity, cardiac output, and stroke volume, all of which are in alignment with clinical results. Finally, the all-day tracking of cardiac function parameters validates the reliability and stability of the developed sensor, highlighting its potential for personalized healthcare systems, particularly in early diagnosis and timely intervention of cardiovascular disease.

Multifunctional Applications Enabled by Fluorination of Hexagonal Boron Nitride

2D materials exhibit exceptional properties as compared to their macroscopic counterparts, with promising applications in nearly every area of science and technology. To unlock further functionality, the chemical functionalization of 2D structures is a powerful technique that enables tunability and new properties within these materials. Here, the successful effort to chemically functionalize hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a chemically inert 2D ceramic with weak interlayer forces, using a gas-phase fluorination process is exploited. The fluorine functionalization guides interlayer expansion and increased polar surface charges on the hBN sheets resulting in a number of vastly improved applications. Specifically, the F-hBN exhibits enhanced dispersibility and thermal conductivity at higher temperatures by more than 75% offering exceptional performance as a thermofluid additive. Dispersion of low volumes of F-hBN in lubricating oils also offers marked improvements in lubrication and wear resistance for steel tribological contacts decreasing friction by 31% and wear by 71%. Additionally, incorporating numerous negatively charged fluorine atoms on hBN induces a permanent dipole moment, demonstrating its applicability in microelectronic device applications. The findings suggest that anchoring chemical functionalities to hBN moieties improves a variety of properties for h-BN, making it suitable for numerous other applications such as fillers or reinforcement agents and developing high-performance composite structures.

PVDF Hybrid Nanocomposites with Graphene and Carbon Nanotubes and Their Thermoresistive and Joule Heating Properties

In recent years, conductive polymer nanocomposites have gained significant attention due to their promising thermoresistive and Joule heating properties across a range of versatile applications, such as heating elements, smart materials, and thermistors. This paper presents an investigation of semi-crystalline polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites with 6 wt.% carbon-based nanofillers, namely graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and a combination of GNPs and MWCNTs (hybrid). The influence of the mono- and hybrid fillers on the crystalline structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the nanocomposites had increased amorphous fraction compared to the neat PVDF. Furthermore, nanocomposites enhanced the β phase of the PVDF by up to 12% mainly due to the presence of MWCNTs. The resistive properties of the nanocompositions were weakly affected by the temperature in the analyzed temperature range of 25-100 °C; nevertheless, the hybrid filler composites were proven to be more sensitive than the monofiller ones. The Joule heating effect was observed when 8 and 10 V were applied, and the compositions reached a self-regulating effect at around 100-150 s. In general, the inclusion in PVDF of nanofillers such as GNPs and MWCNTs, and especially their hybrid combinations, may be successfully used for tuning the self-regulated Joule heating properties of the nanocomposites.

Halide Perovskite Inducing Anomalous Nonvolatile Polarization in Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based Flexible Nanocomposites

Ferroelectric materials have important applications in transduction, data storage, and nonlinear optics. Inorganic ferroelectrics such as lead zirconate titanate possess large polarization, though they are rigid and brittle. Ferroelectric polymers are light weight and flexible, yet their polarization is low, bottlenecked at 10 μC cm-2. Here we show poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanocomposite with only 0.94% of self-nucleated CH3NH3PbBr3 nanocrystals exhibits anomalously large polarization (~19.6 μC cm-2) while retaining superior stretchability and photoluminance, resulting in unprecedented electromechanical figures of merit among ferroelectrics. Comprehensive analysis suggests the enhancement is accomplished via delicate defect engineering, with field-induced Frenkel pairs in halide perovskite stabilized by the poled ferroelectric polymer through interfacial coupling. The strategy is general, working in poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) as well, and the nanocomposite is stable. The study thus presents a solution for overcoming the electromechanical dilemma of ferroelectrics while enabling additional optic-activity, ideal for multifunctional flexible electronics applications.

Ionic Thermoelectric Generators in Vertical and Planar Topologies Based on Fluorinated Polymer Hybrid Materials with Ionic Liquids

Ionic thermoelectrics (TEs), in which voltage generation is based on ion migration, are suitable for applications based on their low cost, high flexibility, high ionic conductivity, and wide range of Seebeck coefficients. This work reports on the development of ionic TE materials based on the poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), Poly(VDF-co-TrFE), as host polymer blended with different contents of the ionic liquid, IL, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [EMIM][TFSI]. The morphology, physico-chemical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of the samples are evaluated together with the TE response. It is demonstrated that the IL acts as a nucleating agent for polymer crystallization. The mechanical properties and ionic conductivity values are dependent on the IL content. A high room temperature ionic conductivity of 0.008 S cm-1 is obtained for the sample with 60 wt% of [EMIM][TFSI] IL. The TE properties depend on both IL content and device topology-vertical or planar-the largest generated voltage range being obtained for the planar topology and the sample with 10 wt% of IL content, characterized by a Seebeck coefficient of 1.2 mV K-1. Based on the obtained maximum power density of 4.9 µW m-2, these materials are suitable for a new generation of TE devices.

A Thermal-Ball-Valve Structure Separator for Highly Safe Lithium-Ion Batteries

The separator located between the positive and negative electrodes not only provides a lithium-ion transmission channel but also prevents short circuits for direct contact of electrodes. The inferior dimension thermostability of commercial polyolefin separators intensifies the thermal runaway of batteries under abuse such as short circuits, overcharge, and so on. a polyvinylidene fluoride/polyether imide (PVDF/PEI) separator with high thermal stability in which the high thermostable PEI microspheres are evenly dispersed in the PVDF film matrix and also located in the micro holes of the PVDF film is developed. They not only function as strong skeleton that enables the rare shrink of the separator at 200 °C avoiding short circuit but also act as ball valve that blocks the lithium ion transmission channel at 150 °C interrupting the further heat aggregation. Thus, the LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2/Li batteries exhibit high cycle stability of 96.5% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.2C and 80°C. Further, the LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2/graphite pouch cells are constructed and deliver good safety performance without smoke release and catching fire after the nail penetration test.

Mechanical and Acoustic-Driven BiFeO3 Composite Films-Based Hybrid Nanogenerator for Energy Harvesting and Sensing Applications

Nanogenerators for acoustic energy harvesting are still in the early stage of development, and many challenges such as the optimization of device structure and the design of efficient and sensitive materials need to be addressed. To solve the above-mentioned problems, herein, advancement in synthesized multiferroic material for hybridizing the nanogenerator and efficient harvesting of various energies such as acoustic, mechanical, and vibrational energies is reported. Initially, bismuth ferrate (BiFeO3, BFO)-based composite films are prepared with high ferroelectric and dielectric coefficients. The hybrid nanogenerator (HNG) based on a 3D-printed structure has the highest electrical output which is further improved depending on the BFO loading concentration in the composite film. The 0.5 wt% BFO-loaded PVDF-based HNG offers the enhanced open circuit voltage, short circuit current, and charge density values of ≈30 V, ≈1 µA, and ≈10 µC/m2, respectively. The optimized HNG is employed to harvest mechanical energy from everyday human life. Furthermore, the HNG layers are used in the fabrication of a multi-energy harvester/sensor (MEH/S) which can harvest/sense various vibrational and acoustic energies under different acoustic frequencies and amplitudes, respectively. The harvested energy from the MEH/S is tested to power portable electronics.

Strengthening Multi-Factor Authentication Through Physically Unclonable Functions in PVDF-HFP-Phase-Dependent a-IGZO Thin-Film Transistors

For enhanced security in hardware-based security devices, it is essential to extract various independent characteristics from a single device to generate multiple keys based on specific values. Additionally, the secure destruction of authentication information is crucial for the integrity of the data. Doped amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) using poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) induce a dipole doping effect through a phase-transition process, creating physically unclonable function (PUF) devices for secure user information protection. The PUF security key, generated at VGS = 20 V in a 20 × 10 grid, demonstrates uniformity of 42% and inter-Hamming distance (inter-HD) of 49.79% in the β-phase of PVDF-HFP. However, in the γ-phase, the uniformity drops to 22.5%, and inter-HD decreases to 35.74%, indicating potential security key destruction during the phase transition. To enhance security, a multi-factor authentication (MFA) system is integrated, utilizing five security keys extracted from various TFT parameters. The security keys from turn-on voltage (VON), VGS = 20 V, VGS = 30 V, mobility, and threshold voltage (Vth) exhibit near-ideal uniformities and inter-HDs, with the highest values of 58% and 51.68%, respectively. The dual security system, combining phase transition and MFA, establishes a robust protection mechanism for privacy-sensitive user information.

Memory effect in ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films via spin crossover probes

Ferroelectric polymers are of great interest due to their intrinsic processing capabilities, superior to classic inorganic ferroelectric materials. For example, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and derivatives have been incorporated into multiple device architectures for information storage and transfer. Here we report an additional advantage of organic ferroelectrics as their flexibility allows for the preparation of composites with spin crossover (SCO) probes to tune their ferroelectric parameters by external stimuli. We demonstrate how the saturation polarization and coercive field of a ferroelectric [Fe(NH2trz)3](NO3)2/PVDF composite film depends on the spin state of the [Fe(NH2trz)3](NO3)2, opening a thermal hysteresis and delivering a ferroelectric material with a memory effect. This switching may now be used to tune the function of a device, adding additional information states to the elemental binary logic. Additional evidence of the synergy between the two components of these films was also found in the glass transition of the PVDF component that induces small changes in the paramagnetic component.

Sweat permeable and ultrahigh strength 3D PVDF piezoelectric nanoyarn fabric strain sensor

Commercial wearable piezoelectric sensors possess excellent anti-interference stability due to their electronic packaging. However, this packaging renders them barely breathable and compromises human comfort. To address this issue, we develop a PVDF piezoelectric nanoyarns with an ultrahigh strength of 313.3 MPa, weaving them with different yarns to form three-dimensional piezoelectric fabric (3DPF) sensor using the advanced 3D textile technology. The tensile strength (46.0 MPa) of 3DPF exhibits the highest among the reported flexible piezoelectric sensors. The 3DPF features anti-gravity unidirectional liquid transport that allows sweat to move from the inner layer near to the skin to the outer layer in 4 s, resulting in a comfortable and dry environment for the user. It should be noted that sweating does not weaken the piezoelectric properties of 3DPF, but rather enhances. Additionally, the durability and comfortability of 3DPF are similar to those of the commercial cotton T-shirts. This work provides a strategy for developing comfortable flexible wearable electronic devices.

Controlled Molecular Orientation through Intercalation in PVDF Thin Films: Exhibiting Ultralong Retention and Improved Leakage Current

Ferroelectric switching and retention performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) thin films improve by the incorporation of unmodified smectite montmorillonite (MMT) clay nanodielectric. In the present study, an intercalated PVDF (clay/PVDF) thin film with edge-on β-crystallite is fabricated via a heat-controlled spin coating (HCSC) technique. This provides an efficient and simple way to fabricate the edge-on oriented crystallite lamellae with an electroactive β-phase, facilitating nanoscale ferroelectric switching at a lower voltage compared to the face-on orientation. Here, we demonstrate the polarization retention for periods longer than 20 days (∼480 h, i.e., 1.8 × 106 s), with no degradation in switched nanoscale domains. In addition, by maintaining the relatively high dielectric constant, the incorporation of nanoclay effectively lowers the leakage current by 102 factors. The obtained memory window in the edge-on orientation is 7 V, approximately twice the memory window obtained in the face-on orientation. In short, our findings provide a simple and promising route to fabricate edge-on oriented PVDF thin films, with ultralong retention, high dielectric constant, and improved leakage current.

Osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells on electroactive substrates

This study investigates the effect of electroactivity and electrical charge distribution on the biological response of human bone marrow stem cells (hBMSCs) cultured in monolayer on flat poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, substrates. Differences in cell behaviour, including proliferation, expression of multipotency markers CD90, CD105 and CD73, and expression of genes characteristic of different mesenchymal lineages, were observed both during expansion in basal medium before reaching confluence and in confluent cultures in osteogenic induction medium. The crystallisation of PVDF in the electrically neutral α-phase or in the electroactive phase β, both unpoled and poled, has been found to have an important influence on the biological response. In addition, the presence of a permanent positive or negative surface electrical charge distribution in phase β substrates has also shown a significant effect on cell behaviour.

Enhancing piezoelectric effect of PVDF electrospun fiber through NiO nanoparticles for wearable applications

Flexible electrospun fiber-based piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) has attracted a lot of interest due to its ability of generating electrical energy from mechanical energy sources. The present work aims to improve the piezoelectric output of PENG devices based on electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) doped with nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) in different concentrations (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 wt.-%). Crystalline phase changes and β-crystalline content in electrospun fibers were evaluated using XRD and FTIR-ATR, respectively. Surface morphology and surface roughness of the electrospun fibers were observed using FE-SEM and AFM, respectively. The hydrophobic nature of the fibers was analyzed using a wettability test. PENG output voltage and short-circuit current performance of neat PVDF and PVDF doped with NiO (PN) composite electrospun fibers were calculated using a customized variable-pressure setup with an optimized force of 1.0 kgf and 1.0 Hz frequency. Neat PVDF-based PENG exhibited only 1.7 V and 0.7 μA, whereas, PVDF doped with 6 wt.-% NiO NP (PN-6) based PENG generated a high output voltage of 5.5 V and 1.83 μA current. The optimized PN-6 PENG device is demonstrated for use in wearable devices towards identifying certain body movements like tapping, wrist movement, walking and running.

Structural, Mechanical, and Barrier Properties of the Polyvinylidene Fluoride-Bacterial Nanocellulose-Based Hybrid Composite

This study presents an analysis of films which consist of two layers; one layer is PVDF as the matrix, along with fillers BaTiO3 (BT), and the second is one bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) filled with Fe3O4. The mass fraction of BT in PVDF was 5%, and the samples were differentiated based on the duration of the mechanical activation of BT. This innovative PVDF laminate polymer with environmentally friendly fillers aligns with the concept of circular usage, resulting in a reduction in plastic content and potential improvement of the piezoelectric properties of the entire composite. This work presents new, multifunctional "green" packaging materials that potentially could be a good alternative to specific popular materials used for this purpose. The synthesis of the films was carried out using the hot press method. Tensile tests, water vapor permeability examination, and structural analyses using SEM-EDS and FTIR have been conducted. The sample PVDF/BT20/BNC/Fe3O4 exhibited the best barrier properties (impermeability to water vapor), while the highest tensile strength and toughness were exhibited by the PVDF/BT5/BNC/Fe3O4 sample.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Aerogels with α, β, and γ Crystalline Forms: Correlating Physicochemical Properties with Polymorphic Structures

Strategic customization of crystalline forms of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) aerogels is of great importance for a variety of applications, from energy harvesters to thermal and acoustic insulation. Here, we report sustainable strategies to prepare crystalline pure α, β, and γ forms of PVDF aerogels from their respective gels using a solvent exchange strategy with green solvents, followed by a freeze-drying technique. The crucial aspect of this process was the meticulous choice of appropriate solvents to enable the formation of thermoreversible gels of PVDF by crystallization-induced gelation. Depending on the polymer-solvent interactions, the chain conformation of PVDF can be modulated to obtain gels and aerogels with specific crystalline structures. The crystalline pure α-form and piezoelectric β-form aerogels were readily obtained by using cyclohexanone and γ-butyrolactone as gelation solvents. On the other hand, the γ-form aerogel was obtained using a binary solvent system consisting of dimethylacetamide and water. These aerogels with distinct crystalline structures exhibit different morphologies, mechanical properties, hydrophobicities, acoustic properties, and electrical properties. Measurement of thermal conductivity for these aerogels showed exceptionally low thermal conductivity values of ∼0.040 ± 0.003 W m-1 K-1 irrespective of their crystal structures. Our results showcase the fabrication approaches that enable PVDF aerogels with varied physicochemical properties for multifunctional applications.

Design of High-Entropy Tape Electrolytes for Compression-Free Solid-State Batteries

Advanced solid electrolytes with strong adhesion to other components are the key for the successes of solid-state batteries. Unfortunately, traditional solid electrolytes have to work under high compression to maintain the contact inside owing to their poor adhesion. Here, a concept of high-entropy tape electrolyte (HETE) is proposed to simultaneously achieve tape-like adhesion, liquid-like ion conduction, and separator-like mechanical properties. This HETE is designed with adhesive skin layer on both sides and robust skeleton layer in the middle. The significant properties of the three layers are enabled by high-entropy microstructures which are realized by harnessing polymer-ion interactions. As a result, the HETE shows high ionic conductivity (3.50 ± 0.53 × 10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature), good mechanical properties (toughness 11.28 ± 1.12 MJ m-3, strength 8.18 ± 0.28 MPa), and importantly, tape-like adhesion (interfacial toughness 231.6 ± 9.6 J m-2). Moreover, a compression-free solid-state tape battery is finally demonstrated by adhesion-based assembling, which shows good interfacial and electrochemical stability even under harsh mechanical conditions, such as twisting and bending. The concept of HETE and compression-free solid-state tape batteries may bring promising solutions and inspiration to conquer the interface challenges in solid-state batteries and their manufacturing.

A Bionic Skin for Health Management: Excellent Breathability, In Situ Sensing, and Big Data Analysis

Developing an intelligent wearable system is of great significance to human health management. An ideal health-monitoring patch should possess key characteristics such as high air permeability, moisture-wicking function, high sensitivity, and a comfortable user experience. However, such a patch that encompasses all these functions is rarely reported. Herein, an intelligent bionic skin patch for health management is developed by integrating bionic structures, nano-welding technology, flexible circuit design, multifunctional sensing functions, and big data analysis using advanced electrospinning technology. By controlling the preparation of nanofibers and constructing bionic secondary structures, the resulting nanofiber membrane closely resembles human skin, exhibiting excellent air/moisture permeability, and one-side sweat-wicking properties. Additionally, the bionic patch is endowed with a high-precision signal acquisition capabilities for sweat metabolites, including glucose, lactic acid, and pH; skin temperature, skin impedance, and electromyographic signals can be precisely measured through the in situ sensing electrodes and flexible circuit design. The achieved intelligent bionic skin patch holds great potential for applications in health management systems and rehabilitation engineering management. The design of the smart bionic patch not only provides high practical value for health management but also has great theoretical value for the development of the new generation of wearable electronic devices.

Revealing an important role of piezoelectric polymers in nervous-tissue regeneration: A review

Nerve injuries pose a drastic threat to nerve mobility and sensitivity and lead to permanent dysfunction due to low regenerative capacity of mature neurons. The electrical stimuli that can be provided by electroactive materials are some of the most effective tools for the formation of soft tissues, including nerves. Electric output can provide a distinctly favorable bioelectrical microenvironment, which is especially relevant for the nervous system. Piezoelectric biomaterials have attracted attention in the field of neural tissue engineering owing to their biocompatibility and ability to generate piezoelectric surface charges. In this review, an outlook of the most recent achievements in the field of piezoelectric biomaterials is described with an emphasis on piezoelectric polymers for neural tissue engineering. First, general recommendations for the design of an optimal nerve scaffold are discussed. Then, specific mechanisms determining nerve regeneration via piezoelectric stimulation are considered. Activation of piezoelectric responses via natural body movements, ultrasound, and magnetic fillers is also examined. The use of magnetoelectric materials in combination with alternating magnetic fields is thought to be the most promising due to controllable reproducible cyclic deformations and deep tissue permeation by magnetic fields without tissue heating. In vitro and in vivo applications of nerve guidance scaffolds and conduits made of various piezopolymers are reviewed too. Finally, challenges and prospective research directions regarding piezoelectric biomaterials promoting nerve regeneration are discussed. Thus, the most relevant scientific findings and strategies in neural tissue engineering are described here, and this review may serve as a guideline both for researchers and clinicians.

Pyroelectric Polyelectrolyte Brushes

Piezo- and pyroelectric materials are of interest, for example, for energy harvesting applications, for the development of tactile sensors, as well as neuromorphic computing. This study reports the observation of pyro- and piezoelectricity in thin surface-attached polymer brushes containing zwitterionic and electrolytic side groups that are prepared via surface-initiated polymerization. The pyro- and piezoelectric properties of the surface-grafted polyelectrolyte brushes are found to sensitively depend on and can be tuned by variation of the counterion. The observed piezo- and pyroelectric properties reflect the structural complexity of polymer brushes, and are attributed to a complex interplay of the non-uniform segment density within these films, together with a non-uniform distribution of counterions and specific ion effects. The fabrication of thin pyroelectric films by surface-initiated polymerization is an important addition to the existing strategies toward such materials. Surface-initiated polymerization, in particular, allows for facile grafting of polar thin polymer films from a wide range of substrates via a straightforward two-step protocol that obviates the need for multistep laborious synthetic procedures or thin film deposition protocols. The ability to produce polymer brushes with piezo- and pyroelectric properties opens up new avenues of application of these materials, for example, in energy harvesting or biosensing.

Temperature Dependence of the Number of Defect-Structures in Poly(vinylidene fluoride)

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is predominantly characterized by alternating CH2 and CF2 units in a polymer backbone, originating from the head-to-tail addition of monomers or regular propagation. Due, to a small extent, to inverse monomer addition, so-called defect structures occur which influence the macroscopic properties of PVDF significantly. The amount of defect structures in the material is determined by the polymerization conditions. Here, the temperature dependence of the fraction of defect structures in PVDF obtained from polymerizations between 45 and 90 °C is reported. We utilized 19F-NMR spectroscopy to determine the fraction of defect structures as a function of temperature. To derive kinetic data, the polymerization of VDF is considered a quasi-copolymerization described by the Terminal Model involving four different propagation reactions. Based on the experimentally determined temperature-dependent fractions of defect structures, the known overall propagation rate coefficient, and taking into account the self-healing behavior of the macroradical, the Arrhenius parameters of the individual propagation rate coefficients were determined using the Monte Carlo methods.

Ferroelectric Properties of Polymer-Semiconductor Hybrid Material or Composite under Optical Excitation

Polymer-semiconductor hybrid materials or composites have been investigated with respect to their microstructure, optical, photoconductive, and ferroelectric properties. For this purpose, either CdSe quantum dots or (Cd:Zn)S microparticles were dispersed in poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene) solution and hot pressed to films. In both material systems, the electrical conductivity and the polarization behavior could be controlled by the intensity of the optical excitation. The simultaneous high optical transparency of the CdSe quantum-dot-based hybrid materials makes them particularly interesting for applications in the field of flexible, high-resolution sensors.

Ionic liquid modified PVDF/BCZT nanocomposites for space charge induced mechanical energy harvesting performance

Mechanical energy harvesting performances of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) based composites are most often correlated with their polar phase and the individual piezoelectricity of the used filler materials. Here we show that the significant enhancement of space charge polarization of the said composites can play the key dominant role in determining their mechanical energy harvesting performance regardless of their polar phase and individual piezoelectricity of the used fillers. For this purpose, ionic liquid has been incorporated into PVDF/0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3-0.5Ba(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3(BCZT) composites which led to a huge enhancement in space charge polarization. The gradual addition of ionic liquid into 10 wt% BCZT loaded PVDF (PBCZT) has helped in extraordinarily enhancing the conductivity gradually which has confirmed the huge enhancement of space charge polarization. However, after a certain limit of ionic liquid addition, the polar phase of the composite films is decreased. Despite this, the output voltages from the piezoelectric and piezo-tribo hybrid nanogenerators (PENGs and HNGs, respectively) fabricated by using the developed films have been found to be increased gradually with the increase in the ionic liquid amount in PBCZT composite. As the amount of BCZT filler was kept fixed for all the films, this result has confirmed the key role of space charge polarization of PVDF-based composites in determining their mechanical energy harvesting performances compared to the effect of polar phase and individual piezoelectricity of filler. The optimized PENG and HNG devices have shown the output voltage as high as 52 and 167 V, respectively, with power densities ∼85 and 152μW cm-2which predicted their excellent usability in real life energy conversion devices. This work also shows that the effect of extraordinarily enhanced space charge polarization is effective in improving the performance of all types of mechanical energy harvesting devices regardless of their mechanisms (piezoelectric or hybrid).

Enhanced dielectric properties of PVDF polymer nanocomposites: A study on gold-decorated, surface-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes

The integration of surface-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs) into polymer nanocomposites has been extensively studied for their potential to enhance dielectric properties. This study, however, pioneers the use of a novel hybrid filler comprising fMWCNTs coated with metal nanoparticles, specifically aimed at augmenting the dielectric performance of polymers. In our research, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposite films were synthesized using fMWCNTs with a diameter of ∼6-9 nm and a length of 5 μm, adorned with gold nanoparticles (nAu) of ∼5.4 ± 0.9 nm via an adapted Turkevich method. Comprehensive analyses were conducted on nAu-fMWCNTs hybrid powder and their nanocomposites in PVDF with varying filler concentrations, confirming the formation of nAu-fMWCNTs with a weight ratio of 1.1 : 98.9. Three-phase percolative nanocomposites were produced by dispersing the hybrid filler in N,N-dimethylformamide, facilitated by interactions between the negative charge of nAu-fMWCNTs (zeta potential of ∼ -40.43 ± 0.46 mV) and polar phases of PVDF. This was verified through zeta potential and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses. The dielectric permittivity (ε') of the nanocomposites significantly increased from 17.8 to 524.8 (at 1 kHz) with filler loadings from 0.005 to 0.01 vol%, while the dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) showed a minor increase from 0.05 to 1.18. These enhancements are attributed to the elevated permittivity of nAu-fMWCNTs hybrid powder, PVDF's transition to the β-phase, and interfacial polarization effects. The restrained growth of nAu on fMWCNTs and the inhibition of conductive pathways in the polymer matrix contributed to the low tanδ values.

High-Performance All-Textile Triboelectric Nanogenerator toward Intelligent Sports Sensing and Biomechanical Energy Harvesting

Merging textiles with advanced energy harvesting technology via triboelectric effects brings novel insights into self-powered wearable textile electronics. However, fabrication of a comfortable textile-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with high outputs remains challenging. Herein, we propose a highly flexible, tailorable, single-electrode all-textile TENG (t-TENG) with both wear comfort and high outputs. A dielectric modulated porous composite coating containing poly(vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoropropylene copolymer and barium titanate nanoparticles is constructed on conductive fabric to counterpart with highly positive glass fiber fabric through knotted yarn bonding, maintaining the superiority of textiles and strong triboelectricity. Through the synergistic optimization of charge storage via dielectric modulation and charge dissipation offset by electrical poling, remarkable outputs (261 V, 1.5 μA, and 12.7 nC) are obtained from a miniaturized, lightweight t-TENG (2 × 2 cm2, 130 mg) with an instantaneous power density of 654.48 mW·m-2, as well as excellent electrical robustness and device durability over 20,000 cycles. The t-TENG also exhibits a high sensitivity of 3.438 V·kPa-1 in the force region (1-10 N), demonstrating great potential in TENG-based intelligent sports sensing applications for monitoring and correcting the basketball shooting hand and foot arch posture. Furthermore, over 110 light-emitting diode arrays can be lightened up by gently tapping this miniaturized t-TENG. It also offers a wearable power source scheme through integrating the single-electrode device into clothing and utilizing the skin as the grounded electrode, revealing its ease of integration and biomechanical energy harvesting capability. This work provides an attractive paradigm for next-generation textile electronics with well-balanced device performance and wear comfort.

Enhancing mechanical properties of composite solid electrolyte by ultra-high molecular weight polymers

Composite solid electrolytes combining the advantages of inorganic and polymer electrolytes are considered as one of the promising candidates for solid-state lithium metal batteries. Compared with ceramic-in-polymer electrolyte, polymer-in-ceramic electrolyte displays excellent mechanical strength to inhibit lithium dendrite. However, polymer-in-ceramic electrolyte faces the challenges of lack of flexibility and severely blocked Li+transport. In this study, we prepared polymer-in-ceramic film utilizing ultra-high molecular weight polymers and ceramic particles to combine flexibility and mechanical strength. Meanwhile, the ionic conductivity of polymer-in-ceramic electrolytes was improved by adding excess lithium salt in polymer matrix to form polymer-in-salt structure. The obtained film shows high stiffness (10.5 MPa), acceptable ionic conductivity (0.18 mS cm-1) and high flexibility. As a result, the corresponding lithium symmetric cell stably cycles over 800 h and the corresponding LiFePO4cell provides a discharge capacity of 147.7 mAh g-1at 0.1 C without obvious capacity decay after 145 cycles.

Biomimetic dual sensing polymer nanocomposite for biomedical applications

There is a growing need for sensing materials that can provide multiple sensing capabilities for wearable devices, implantable sensors, and diagnostics tools. As complex human physiology requires materials that can simultaneously detect and respond to slow and fast pressure fluctuations. Mimicking the slow adaptive (SA) and fast adaptive (FA) mechanoreceptors in skin can lead to the development of dual sensing electrospun polymer nanocomposites for biomedical applications. These dual sensing nanocomposites can provide simultaneous sensing of both slow and fast pressure fluctuations, making them ideal for applications such as monitoring vital signs, detecting a wider range of movements and pressures. Here we develop a novel dual sensing PVDF-HFP-based nanocomposite that combines the advantages of capacitive and piezoelectric properties through controling electrospinning environment and processing parameters, polymer solution composition, and addition of nucleating agents such as Carbon Black (CB) to enhance the crystalline development of β-phase, fibre thickness, and morphology. The developed PVDF-HFP/CB nanocomposite presents and response to both slow and fast pressure fluctuations with high capacitance (5.37 nF) and output voltage (1.51 V) allowing for accurate and reliable measurements.
