Abstract
Background and aim A healthy diet has been recommended for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aim to investigate the associations of diet quality indices with the risk of developingmetabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Methods We conducted this nested case-control study by recruiting 968 cases with MAFLD and 964 controls from the participants of the baseline phase of the Sabzevar Persian Cohort Study (SPCS). MAFLD was defined as having a fatty liver index ≥ 60 plus at least one of the following: overweight or obese, Type II diabetes mellitus, or evidence of metabolic dysregulation. Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) and Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010) were calculated from a validated food frequency questionnaire. We estimated the associations of HEI-2015 and AHEI-2010 with MAFLD risk using multivariable logistic regression. Results Among those in the highest relative to the lowest quintile of HEI-2015 and AHEI-2010, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (OR) were 0.45 (95% CI [confidence interval] 0.29-0.69; P trend = 0.002) and 0.55 (95% CI 0.35-0.85; P trend = 0.04), respectively. Conclusion The results of our study suggest that there is a significant associationbetween adherence to a healthy diet, indicated by a higher score of HEI or AHEI, and a reduced likelihood of developingMAFLD. Abstract
BACKGROUND A proinflammatory diet has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. However, the underlying metabolic roles remain to be elucidated. OBJECTIVE To investigate the metabolic mechanism between proinflammatory diet and breast cancer risk. METHODS This prospective study included 273,324 females from the UK Biobank. The dietary inflammatory potential was assessed via an energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) based on a 24-hour recall questionnaire. The plasma metabolome was profiled via high-throughput nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). A metabolic signature was constructed by summing selected metabolite concentrations weighted by the coefficients via absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) analysis. Multivariate Cox regression was applied to assess the associations of the E-DII and metabolic signature with breast cancer risk. RESULTS We constructed a metabolic signature comprising 26 metabolites associated with a proinflammatory diet. These metabolites primarily included lipoproteins, amino acids, fatty acids, and ketone bodies. Both the E-DII and metabolic signature were positively associated with breast cancer risk (hazard ratio [HR] comparing the highest quintile to the lowest quintile = 1.17, 95% confidence interval [CI] = (1.04, 1.32); and 1.21, 95% CI = (1.01, 1.46), respectively). Furthermore, we found that saturated fatty acids to total fatty acids percentage and acetone concentration were positively associated (HR = 1.20, 95% CI = (1.04, 1.37); 1.15, 95% CI = (1.01, 1.32), respectively), while the degree of unsaturation was inversely associated with breast cancer risk (HR = 0.86; 95% CI = 0.75, 0.99). CONCLUSION We identified a metabolic signature that reflects a proinflammatory diet and is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leisure activity was associated with depression in older adults. However, the specific processes by which diet and cognition mediate the role of leisure activities and depression remain uncertain. The study aims to investigate the relationship between leisure activity and depression in older people and the underlying mechanisms involved, while constructing a comprehensive model that links these variables. METHODS Data came from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. Mini-Mental State Examination and CES-D-10 were used to assess cognition and depression, respectively. PROCESS macro was employed to assess the mediation effects of diet and cognition on the relationship between leisure activity and depression. RESULTS Leisure activity was negatively associated with depression, with 35.90% of the total effect mediated through dietary diversity and cognitive function, of which 1.28% was from the chain-mediated effect of dietary diversity and cognition. In addition, 20.94% of the total effect mediated through a plant-based diet and cognitive function, of which 0.43% was from the chain-mediated effect of plant-based diet and cognition. CONCLUSIONS Leisure activities are linked to depression, with diet and cognition acting as chain-mediating factors. Public health experts recommend that older adults engage in leisure activities, ensure a broad spectrum of dietary intake, and prioritize the augmentation of plant-based diets as preventative strategies against depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Retinal sublayer thickness is associated with both ophthalmic and neurodegenerative diseases, serving as a valuable biomarker. Despite the established role of diet in chronic disease prevention, the relationship between healthy dietary patterns and retinal sublayer thickness remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the associations between four commonly used diet assessment scores and retinal sublayer thickness in a large-scale population. METHODS This study utilized data from the UK Biobank, including 13,993 participants with complete optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements and dietary assessments. The dietary patterns analyzed were the Alternate Mediterranean Diet (AMED), Anti-Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Index (AEDII), Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010), and Healthful Plant-Based Diet Index (HPDI). Retinal sublayers measured included macular retinal nerve fiber layer (mRNFL), macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL), macular ganglion cell complex (mGCC), retinal pigment epithelium (mRPE), the outer nuclear layer of the central subfield (ONL), photoreceptor inner segment of the central subfield (IS) and total macular thickness. Multivariable linear regression models adjusted for demographics, ophthalmic measurements, and lifestyle factors were employed to examine associations. Mediation analysis was applied to explore the potential mediation effect of several blood biochemical indicators in simple mediation models. RESULTS Higher HPDI scores were significantly associated with increased central retinal macular thickness (β = 0.106, p = 0.001), mGCIPL thickness (β = 0.017, p = 0.033), mRPE (β = -0.012, p = 0.161), ONL (β = 0.044, p = 0.003), IS (β = 0.003, p = 0.005) and mGCC thickness (β = 0.027, p = 0.025). In contrast, the AMED, AEDII, and AHEI-2010 scores did not show consistent associations with retinal sublayer thickness except ONL and IS. The mediation analysis revealed that cholesterol acted as a suppressor variable, partially mediating the relationship between HPDI and retinal sublayer thickness. Sensitivity analyses indicated that the associations between HPDI and retinal sublayer thickness were more pronounced in younger individuals and females. Additionally, the variability in associations across different age and sex subgroups highlighted the potential influence of demographic factors on dietary impacts. CONCLUSION The study findings suggest that adherence to a healthful plant-based diet may confer neuroprotective benefits, particularly for retinal ganglion cell health. This large-scale population-based study underscores the potential role of diet in mitigating early neurodegenerative changes detectable through non-invasive retinal imaging. Further longitudinal research is needed to establish causal relationships and elucidate the underlying mechanisms between diet and retinal health.

Abstract
The effect of dietary antioxidants on blood pressure (BP) regulation and hypertension risk remains largely unknown. This study aimed to comprehensively assess the impacts of dietary antioxidants on systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and pulse pressure (PP), and hypertension risk among Chinese adults. The cross-sectional study assessed data from 12,046 Chinese adults, evaluating dietary antioxidant quality scores (DAQS) and total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) via a validated food frequency questionnaire. MAP was derived using the formula DBP + (0.412 ×PP), with PP calculated as SBP - DBP. The relationship between DAQS, DTAC, and hypertension prevalence was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Among participants not taking antihypertensive medications, those in the highest groups of DTAC and DAQS had significantly lower SBP, DBP, MAP, and PP compared to those in the lowest groups (all p-trends <0.001). Relative to the lowest quintile (Q1) of DTAC (adjusted odds ratios (OR) for hypertension decreased in Q2 (OR 0.90, 95%CI 0.79-1.03), Q3 (OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.56-0.76), Q4 (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.43-0.60), and Q5 (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.31-0.46) (p trend <0.001). For DQAS, hypertension OR of category 5 was 0.38 (95% CI 0.32-0.46) compared to that of category 1. Increased vitamin A, Zinc, and selenium intake correlated with reduced hypertension risk. A significant non-linear DTAC and linear DAQS relationships were observed and hypertension risk. Antioxidant-rich diets markedly lowered SBP, DBP, MAP, PP, and hypertension risk.

Abstract
Background: Diet and inflammation are both associated with hypertension. We aimed to investigate the relationship between the dietary inflammation index (DII), dietary patterns, and the risk of hypertension among Xinjiang residents. Methods: A total of 930 residents aged 20-80 from Shihezi and Tumushuk were selected as participants using a stratified whole cluster random sampling method. General demographic information, dietary data, and physical examination results were collected from the participants and DII scores were calculated. Restricted cubic spline was used to analyze the dose-response relationship between the DII and the risk of hypertension. LASSO regression was used to screen dietary factors associated with hypertension. Factor analysis was used to extract dietary patterns. Finally, logistic regression modeling was used to analyze the association between the DII, dietary patterns, and the risk of hypertension. Results: The DII was linearly and positively associated with the risk of developing hypertension. Logistic regression analysis showed that the prevalence of hypertension was 2.23 (95% CI: 1.53, 3.23) and 3.29 (95% CI: 2.26, 4.79) in the T2 and T3 groups, respectively, compared with the T1 group. Riboflavin and folate were associated with the risk of hypertension. In the vegetable-egg dietary pattern, the risk of hypertension was reduced by 33%, 39%, and 37% in groups Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively, compared with group Q1 (Q2: OR = 0.67, 95% CI: 0.45, 0.99; Q3: OR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.41, 0.92; Q4: OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.42, 0.96). Conclusions: The higher the DII score, the higher the risk of hypertension among residents of Xinjiang. In addition, vegetable-egg dietary patterns can reduce the risk of hypertension. Therefore, local residents should be scientifically instructed to increase their intake of vegetables and eggs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An increasing number of studies in recent years investigate various dietary and lifestyle patterns and associated breast cancer (BC) risk. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to comprehensively synthesize and grade the evidence on dietary and lifestyle patterns and BC risk. METHODS Databases were systematically searched up to 31 March, 2022, for evidence from randomised controlled trials and prospective cohort studies on adherence to a dietary pattern alone or in combination with lifestyle behaviors and incidence of or mortality from primary BC in adult females. Findings in all, premenopausal, and postmenopausal females were descriptively synthesized instead of meta-analyzed due to patterns heterogeneity. An independent Global Cancer Update Programme Expert Panel graded the strength of the evidence. RESULTS A total of 84 publications were included. Results for patterns reflecting both a healthy diet and lifestyle were more consistent than for patterns that included diet only. There was strong-probable evidence that a priori World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) and American Cancer Society (ACS) dietary and lifestyle scores may reduce BC risk in all and postmenopausal females, whereas in premenopausal females, less evidence was found contributing to limited-suggestive grade. There was also a limited-suggestive evidence that adherence to the Healthy Lifestyle Index and other diet and lifestyle scores may reduce BC risk in postmenopausal females; a posteriori Western/Meat/Alcohol dietary patterns may increase BC risk in postmenopausal females; and Prudent/Vegetarian/Mediterranean dietary patterns may reduce BC risk in all females. For the remaining patterns, evidence was graded as limited-no conclusions. CONCLUSIONS Advice to adopt combined aspects of a healthy diet and lifestyle according to WCRF/AICR and ACS scores, encouraging a healthy weight, physical activity, alcohol and smoking avoidance, and a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, (whole)grains and cereals and discouraging red and processed meat, can be proposed to females to lower BC risk. Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited epidemiological evidence exists regarding the role of healthy eating patterns in reducing the risk of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). This study aimed to investigate the association between adherence to four established healthy eating patterns and subsequent CD or UC risk, and further examined whether these associations are linked to anti-inflammatory mechanisms. METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study of 197,391 participants from the UK Biobank who completed at least one dietary questionnaire and were free from inflammatory bowel disease or cancer at baseline. Four dietary patterns were assessed, including Alternate Mediterranean Diet (AMED), Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015), Healthful Plant-based Diet Index (HPDI), and EAT-Lancet. Cox proportional models with restricted cubic splines were applied to explore the associations. The potential role of low-grade inflammation in these associations was examined through mediation analysis. RESULTS During 2,193,436 person-years follow-up, 260 CD and 601 UC cases were identified. Higher AMED and HEI-2015 scores were associated with a reduced risk of CD but no UC, with no evidence against nonlinearity. These associations remained consistent across multiple sensitive and subgroup analyses. For dietary components, the fruits and monounsaturated fatty acids: saturated fatty acids ratio in AMED, and total fruits, total protein foods and fatty acid in HEI-2015 were linked to a decreased CD risk. Both diets were also associated with lower plasma inflammation biomarkers. Mediation analysis indicated that 7.66% and 13.40% of the reductions in CD risk attributed to AMED and HEI-2015 diets, respectively, were mediated by low-grade inflammation scores. CONCLUSIONS Higher adherence to AMED and HEI-2015 might significantly reduce CD risk, partly due to their anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammatory diets may influence risk of cardiovascular disease. Subsequent cardiovascular disease is also influenced by adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) such as preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age birth, gestational diabetes, and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. However, the associations between inflammatory diet, APOs, and cardiometabolic health remain unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS We used data from the nuMoM2b (Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study Monitoring Mothers-to-Be) HHS (Heart Health Study) to assess the relationship between dietary quality and cardiometabolic health. We calculated Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index scores representing the inflammatory burden in a person's diet. We used linear regression to determine the association between Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index score and cardiometabolic outcomes. We performed stratified analyses for outcomes with a significant interaction between Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index and APO. Data were available from 3249 participants at a median of 3.1 years after delivery. Higher Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index scores were associated with higher body mass index (B=0.29 kg/m2 [95% CI, 0.16-0.42]), waist circumference (0.66 cm [95% CI, 0.39-0.93]), diastolic blood pressure (0.26 mm Hg [95% CI, 0.09-0.44]), mean arterial pressure (0.23 mm Hg [95% CI, 0.06-0.40]), triglycerides (2.11 mg/dL [95% CI, 1.05-3.18]), creatinine (2.78 mg/dL [95% CI, 1.13-4.44]), insulin (exp[B]=1.04 [95% CI, 1.03-1.05]) and C-reactive protein (exp[B]=1.07 [95% CI, 1.04-1.10]), and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-0.41 mg/dL [95% CI, -0.66 to -0.37]) (all P<0.01). Significant interactions with APO (P<0.05) were identified for body mass index and waist circumference, with stratified analysis revealing stronger associations for individuals with APOs. CONCLUSIONS A more proinflammatory diet was associated with worse cardiometabolic health measures, and these relationships differed by a person's APO history. Further investigation should establish how dietary modifications after pregnancy may potentially mitigate cardiovascular disease risk.

Abstract
China is grappling with significant aging challenge, and food patterns play an important role in the health of aging populations. A comprehensive bibliometric analysis with regard to systematically examined population-based studies published between 1 June 2014 and 31 May 2024, and 83 eligible studies, including 43 cross-sectional, 34 longitudinal, and 6 case-control studies, was conducted to investigate the correlations among foods, dietary patterns, and healthy aging concepts. An interesting conclusion from cohort studies was that foods recommended for intake in certain diets might not be recommended in other diets, i.e., food items in various diets showed different contributions. This dual character of foods exhibited in the diet is termed foodnality, a new concept proposed in this study. Foodnality was partially related to the origins, quality, and processing of foods, as well as individual physical status. Therefore, recommended foods with positive foodnality and unrecommended foods with negative foodnality were summarized, and four-dimensional diet recommendations were further proposed, including choosing a suitable dietary pattern, evaluating positive foodnality, upgrading foodnality to a premium diet, and cultivating healthier dietary concepts. This review plays a pivotal role in evaluating the guidelines on food intake and dietary patterns among elderly residents in China.

Abstract
This review analyzed existing literature regarding the relationship between different diets and chemotherapy toxicities, as well as the quality of life (QOL) among patients undergoing treatment. It aims to identify the most advantageous diet for cancer patients. PubMed, CINAHL, and Embase were used to select randomized control trials (RCTs) assessing the relationship between a specific diet and chemotherapy toxicities and/or QOL in patients as of October 2023. Out of 1,419 records, 11 RCTs were included. Analyses were stratified by diet type. Pooled odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were obtained from the random-effect model using STATA. We included 7 studies testing fasting variations; 1 testing a ketogenic diet; 1 testing a Mediterranean diet; 1 testing a plant-based, high-protein diet; and 1 testing an anti-inflammatory diet. Four fasting studies were in the meta-analysis. The random-effects meta-analysis showed no significant difference in the incidence of chemotherapy toxicities between fasting and non-fasting patients. There is insufficient evidence to determine which dietary intervention is the most advantageous, however, there is evidence that all the diets examined may complement conventional cancer therapy by helping to reduce chemotherapy toxicities. No intervention can be ruled out. More research is needed in this field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are a category of fatty acids that contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which constitute a substantial portion of the Western diet and are vital for maintaining human wellness. The extent to which circulating PUFAs influence the effects of BMI on leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is unknown. Additionally, the impact of circulating PUFA on LTL remains controversial in observational studies. METHODS Using publicly accessible datasets, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was carried out to determine genetic association estimates for BMI, circulating PUFAs, and LTL. The circulating PUFAs considered were omega-3 PUFAs (i.e., docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and total omega-3 PUFAs) and omega-6 PUFAs (i.e., linoleic acid (LA) and total omega-6 PUFAs). Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to investigate the causal relationships between BMI and PUFA with LTL. Additionally, we examined whether certain PUFA mediate the impact of BMI on LTL. RESULTS None of the evidence supported a causal effect of genetically predicted DHA and total omega-3 PUFA on LTL (DHA: β = 0.001, 95% CI: -0.023 to 0.026, p = 0.926; total omega-3 PUFA: β = 0.008, 95% CI: -0.013 to 0.029, p = 0.466). After conducting sensitivity analyses to account for various models of horizontal pleiotropy, the causal association between higher levels of LA and longer LTL persisted (β = 0.034, 95% CI 0.016 to 0.052, p < 0.001). Adjusting for LA in genetics reduced the effect of BMI on LTL from β = -0.039 (95% CI: -0.058 to -0.020, p < 0.001) to -0.034 (95% CI: -0.054 to -0.014, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This MR study indicates that an increase in genetically predicted circulating LA levels is associated with longer LTL. Additionally, it appears that circulating LA levels play a role in mediating some of the impact that BMI has on LTL.

Abstract
In 2022, healthy sleep was included as part of Life's Essential 8, which are a cluster of fundamental factors for cardiovascular health. In many studies, sleep duration and/or quality have also been found to be related to human health. The purpose of this narrative review was to present the relationship between the Mediterranean diet, the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, and the MIND (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) diet and sleep quality and duration in different populations. A literature search was conducted based on the phrases "Mediterranean diet", "DASH diet", and "MIND diet" appearing together with "sleep" or "insomnia" in papers' titles or abstracts. Studies on obstructive sleep apnea or shift work were excluded. The electronic databases were searched via EBSCOhost. Main results: The vast majority of studies showed that there was a beneficial association between the three diets discussed in this review and sleep duration and/or quality; however, most of these results were obtained in cross-sectional analyses. There were only a few studies in which an association between sleep parameters and these diets was not observed. Direction for future studies: Taking into account the significant role of adequate sleep quality in various diseases, even in all-cause mortality, the implementation of randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies seems to be necessary to provide further evidence that would allow these associations to be confirmed. In conclusion, the results obtained so far in various populations strongly suggest that healthy dietary patterns abundant in plant foods, are associated with better sleep quality, as well as with a more adequate length of sleep.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Autoimmune diseases manifest as an immune system response directed against endogenous antigens, exerting a significant influence on a substantial portion of the population. Notably, a leading contributor to morbidity and mortality in this context is cardiovascular disease (CVD). Intriguingly, individuals with autoimmune disorders exhibit a heightened prevalence of CVD compared to the general population. The meticulous management of CV risk factors assumes paramount importance, given the current absence of a standardized solution to this perplexity. This review endeavors to address this challenge from a nutritional perspective. RECENT FINDINGS Emerging evidence suggests that inflammation, a common thread in autoimmune diseases, also plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of CVD. Nutritional interventions aimed at reducing inflammation have shown promise in mitigating cardiovascular risk. The integration of nutritional strategies into the management plans for patients with autoimmune diseases offers a holistic approach to reducing cardiovascular risk. While conventional pharmacological treatments remain foundational, the addition of targeted dietary interventions can provide a complementary pathway to improve cardiovascular outcomes.

Abstract
We hypothesized that consumption of a diet containing the functional ingredient from black sticky rice, which is rich in anthocyanin, over a five-day period would improve anxiety, depression, and stress perception in adult volunteers based on the benefits of this compound. In this study, a total of 46 male and female adult volunteers with mild and moderate stress level were assigned to groups consuming a breakfast meal containing an anthocyanin-enriched functional ingredient at doses of 2 and 4 g per day for 5 days. The volunteers consumed three meals with a low DII but high DAQ-S, and the total calories consumed during the study period was 2000 kcal/day. Mental well-being, including depression, anxiety, and stress, together with AChE, MAO, Nrf2, 8OHdG, MDA, and the density of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium spp., were assessed at baseline and at the end of the study. Safety parameters were also examined. A diet containing both doses of the anthocyanin-enriched functional ingredient with a low DII but high DAQ-S was found to improve anxiety, depression, and stress, with changes in 8-OHdG and IL-6 levels. No other changes and toxicity-related parameters were observed. Our results show that the novel functional ingredient can improve anxiety, depression, and stress perception partly by decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation; however, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies with a larger sample size should be performed to confirm this benefit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES There is a lack of certainty in dietary prescription for individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) due to heterogeneity in studies to date. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy on disease activity of a modified anti-inflammatory dietary pattern purposely designed to reduce intake of food additives (IBD-MAID), compared to standard care, in adults with IBD. SUBJECT/METHODS Adults with IBD were randomised to IBD-MAID (meals provided) [n = 29] or general healthy eating (GHE) [n = 29] for 8 weeks. Disease activity, faecal calprotectin (FC), C-reactive protein (CRP), symptoms, and quality of life (S&QOL) were assessed using validated tools. RESULTS The IBD-MAID was well tolerated and adhered to (92% adherence). At week 8, there was no statistically significant difference in change from baseline in outcome measures between groups. However, baseline to week 8 analysis indicated: (1) statistically significant improvements in S (p = 0.001) & QOL (p = 0.004), FC (p = 0.007), and Crohn's disease activity (p = 0.03) but not ulcerative colitis, in individuals following the IBD-MAID and (2) statistically significant improvement in QOL in individuals receiving GHE (p = 0.015). Correlation analysis on change from baseline to week 8 revealed a greater decrease in food additives intake was associated with statistically significant improvements in FC, S & QOL and alignment of anti-inflammatory dietary principles with improvements in QOL. CONCLUSION The IBD-MAID was well tolerated. The most novel finding pertains to the correlation between reduced food additives intake and improvements in inflammatory markers, S&QOL. Further research is needed to explore the effects of food additives exposure on IBD course. TRIAL REGISTRATION 12619001500145.

Abstract
Purpose Evaluation of the added value of Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean diet scores on the prediction model of the World Health Organization (WHO) to predict 10-year cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality using the Golestan Cohort Study data. Methods A total of 44,648 participants (25,268 women and 18,531 men) were included in the final analysis. To assess the external validity of the non-laboratory risk model of WHO, the Area Under the Curve (AUC) and calibration plot methods were used. The multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to evaluate the association of 10-year CVD mortality risk with DASH and Mediterranean scores and their components. The added value of each significant variables was evaluated by the concordance C-statistic and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). Statistical significance was defined as p-value < 0.05. Results DASH and Mediterranean diet scores were not significant predictors of 10-year CVD mortality in both genders (p > 0.05). However, sodium and total vegetable in both genders and added sugar in women were significant predictors for 10-year stroke mortality (p < 0.05). Sodium intake in women and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) to saturated fatty acid (SFA) ratio in men had significant associations with 10-year mortality of myocardial infarction/coronary heart disease (MI/CHD). Calculation of IDI showed that none of the evaluated nutritional indices/variables could significantly improve the WHO model performance and predictive ability. Conclusion Inclusion of DASH and Mediterranean diet scores and their components did not improve WHO risk prediction model performance and predictive ability to predict 10-year CVD mortality. Abstract
BACKGROUND Added sugars intake is common among individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD), yet the link between added sugars intake and PD is not well understood. Our study aims to investigate the association between added sugars intake and PD. METHODS This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from1990 to 2020. Added sugars intake was estimated based on a 24-hour dietary recall from participants. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was employed to explore the relationship between added sugars intake and the prevalence of PD. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used to explore the nonlinear association between added sugars intake and PD. To further observe whether the conclusions were consistent across different subgroups, we conducted subgroup analyses to investigate the association of added sugars intake with PD in different populations. RESULTS The study included 12,489 participants, of which 100 had PD. When weighted, the data represented 136,959,144 participants. The study revealed a positive association between added sugars intake and the prevalence of PD. In multivariable regression models adjusted for all confounding factors, compared with the lowest quartile of added sugars intake, the third quartile (OR = 2.99; 95% CI: 1.43-6.26) and those consuming more than 25% of their calories from added sugars (OR = 3.34; 95% CI: 1.03-10.86) had the highest risk of PD. The RCS curve showed an L-shaped nonlinear association between added sugars intake and PD. Two-segment linear regression by sex revealed that PD prevalence in women was linearly related to sugar intake (nonlinear P = 0.465), while men exhibited an L-shaped nonlinear relationship (nonlinear P = 0.03). Additionally, subgroup analysis showed that alcohol consumption and diabetes significantly influenced the association between added sugars intake and the prevalence of PD. CONCLUSION These results highlight a positive association between added sugars intake and the prevalence of PD, particularly among women, heavy drinkers, and individuals with diabetes.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a chronic, complex, systemic inflammatory condition that impacts approximately 190 million girls and women worldwide, significantly impacting their quality of life. The effective management of endometriosis requires a multi-disciplinary and holistic approach, one that includes surgical and medical management, such as a laparoscopy and a chronic medical management plan, as well as dietary, nutritional, and lifestyle adjunct interventions, such as pelvic pain physiotherapy and acupuncture. There is growing evidence to support the role of dietary and nutritional interventions in the adjunct management of endometriosis-related pain and gastrointestinal symptoms. However, the implementation of these interventions is often not regulated, as patients with endometriosis often adopt self-management strategies. Diet and nutrition can modulate key players integral to the pathophysiology of endometriosis, such as, but not limited to, inflammation, estrogen, and the microbiome. However, it is unclear as to whether diet plays a role in the prevention or the onset of endometriosis. In this review, we discuss three key players in the pathogenesis of endometriosis-inflammation, estrogen, and the microbiome-and we summarize how diet and nutrition can influence their mechanisms, and consequently, the progression and manifestation of endometriosis. There is a major need for evidence-based, non-invasive adjunct management of this debilitating disease, and diet and nutritional interventions may be suitable.

Abstract
Oxidized low-density lipoproteins (ox-LDLs) are involved in atherosclerotic plaque formation and progression and have been linked to insulin resistance (IR). Myeloperoxidase is a potent oxidant of lipoproteins related to atherogenic risk. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are considered antioxidants due to their association with paraoxonase 1 (PON1). However, HDL can also be oxidized (ox-HDL), and its relationship with IR has not been described. This study evaluated the relationship between circulating levels of myeloperoxidase and paraoxonase 1, diet, and serum levels of ox-LDL and ox-HDL in young people with IR. This cross-sectional study examined 136 young subjects (67 and 69 with and without insulin resistance, respectively). Serum levels of ox-LDL, ox-HDL, myeloperoxidase, and PON1 were quantified using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The nutritional dietary content of the foods was determined with a food frequency questionnaire, which was analyzed with Nutrimind 2013 software. Serum ox-HDL levels were higher in young subjects without IR than those with IR (p = 0.031). Women with IR presented increased ox-LDL levels compared with women without IR (p = 0.012) and men with IR (p < 0.001). In the IR group, serum ox-LDL levels were negatively correlated with total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-C, whereas the correlation was positive in the insulin-sensitive group. Consumption of vitamins B1 and B2 was related to increased HDL-C levels, while higher ox-LDL levels were related to vitamin K intake. In addition, low energy consumption and phosphorus increased PON1 levels. The results suggest that insulin resistance in young women may promote lipoprotein oxidation, and the intake of B complex vitamins may have an antiatherogenic effect.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of individual, joint and fluctuating exposure to air pollution (PM2.5, BC, NO3-, NH4+, OM, SO42-, PM10, NO2, SO2, O3) on glucose metabolisms among prediabetes, and simultaneously explored the modifying effect of lifestyle. We conducted a longitudinal study among prediabetes during 2018-2022. Exposure windows within 60-days moving averages and their variabilities were calculated. FBG, insulin, HOMA-IR, HOMA-B, triglyceride glucose index (TyG), glucose insulin ratio (GI) and allostatic load of glucose homeostasis system (AL-GHS) was included. Linear mixed-effects model and BKMR were adopted to investigate the individual and overall effects, respectively. We also explored the preventive role of lifestyle. Individual air pollutant was associated with increased FBG, insulin, HOMA-IR, HOMA-B, TyG, and decreased GI. People with FBG ≥6.1 mmol/L were more susceptible. Air pollutants mixture were only associated with increased HOMA-B, and constituents have the highest group-PIP. Air pollutants variation also exert harmful effect. We observed similar diabetic effect on AL-GHS. Finally, the diabetic effect of air pollutants disappeared if participants adopt a favorable lifestyle. Our findings highlighted the importance of comprehensively assessing multiple air pollutants and their variations, focusing on metabolic health status in the early prevention of T2D, and adopting healthy lifestyle to mitigate such harmful effect.

Abstract
Western dietary pattern is one of the main contributors to the increased risk of obesity and chronic diseases, through oxidative stress and inflammation, that are the two key mechanisms targeting metabolic organs, such as skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. The chronic exposure to high levels of dietary fatty acids can increase the amount of intramyocellular lipids in skeletal muscle, altering glucose homeostasis and contributing to a reduction in mitochondrial oxidative capacity. Probiotic administration is a promising approach as preventive strategy to attenuate metabolic damage induced by Western diet. Here, we investigated the beneficial effect of Limosillactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 on the inflammatory state and oxidative balance in the skeletal muscle and adipose tissue of adult rats fed a western diet for 8 weeks, focusing on the role of skeletal muscle mitochondria. Limosillactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 administration protected the skeletal muscle from mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, preventing the establishment of inflammation and insulin resistance. Interestingly, a further beneficial effect of the probiotic was exerted on body composition, favoring the deposition of protein mass and preventing adipose tissue hypertrophy and inflammation. These results open the possibility for the use of this probiotic in therapeutic approaches for nutrition-related diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate causal associations between blood-based inflammatory markers and female infertility using Mendelian randomization (MR). DESIGN Mendelian randomization using genome-wide association study data. SETTING Publicly available genome-wide association study data. PATIENT(S) Large female-only cohorts of European ancestry. INTERVENTION(S) Blood-based inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein, interleukins, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, tumor necrosis factor-α, interferon-γ). MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURE(S) Anovulatory infertility (1,054 cases and 117,098 controls); female infertility of other/unspecified origin (5,667 cases and 117,098 controls); and medical treatment for female infertility (2,706 cases and 120,873 controls). Total causal effects were assessed using univariable two-sample methods including inverse variance weighted (IVW) as the primary analysis, as well as other secondary analyses (MR-Egger, weighted median, etc.), with relevant quality assessments. RESULT(S) Interleukin-8 demonstrated a positive association with anovulatory infertility via IVW (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval; 1.51, 1.04-2.21) and weighted median (1.64, 1.05-2.57) methods. Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 was associated with anovulatory infertility via MR-Egger (2.06, 1.13-3.77). Inverse associations were found for interleukins-12 and -18 via IVW, with higher interleukin-12 being associated with lower medical treatment for female infertility (0.75, 0.59-0.94), whereas higher interleukin-18 was associated with lower female infertility of other/unspecified origin (0.90, 0.83-0.97). CONCLUSION(S) This is the first study to examine causal relationships between inflammation and female infertility using MR. Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and interleukin-8 are implicated in anovulatory infertility; however, only the relationship with interleukin-8 was evident in the primary analysis. Interleukins-12 and -18 demonstrated inverse associations with infertility outcomes. Further research is needed to uncover the mechanistic functions of these markers to confirm causality and examine their therapeutic potential for female infertility.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The inflammatory potential of diet is crucial in GDM development. This study compares dietary inflammatory indices (DII) in females with and without a history of GDM and constructs a predictive model for prediabetes risk. METHODS Cross-sectional data from NHANES cycles (2011-2014) were analyzed using the DII. Independent t tests, chi-square test, and Mann-Whitney U test examined DII scores in relation to GDM history. Multivariate logistic regression assessed DII's association with prediabetes in females with GDM history. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) and LASSO regression modeled non-linear relationships and predicted prediabetes risk. RESULTS 971 female participants were included. Those with GDM history had lower DII scores (1.62 (0.58, 2.93) vs. 2.05 (0.91, 2.93)). Higher DII scores in females with GDM were linked to prediabetes, remaining significant after adjusting for confounders. RCS analysis found no non-linear correlation (non-linear p = 0.617). The prediabetes model for GDM history had strong predictive performance (AUC = 88.6%, 95% CI: 79.9-97.4%). CONCLUSION Females with GDM history show lower DII levels, potentially reflecting improved diet and health awareness. Higher DII scores correlate with increased prediabetes risk in this group, emphasizing diet's role in diabetes risk. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
The bidirectional interaction between the gut and the central nervous system (CNS), the so-called gut microbiota-brain axis, is reported to influence brain functions, thus having a potential impact on the development or the progression of several neurodegenerative disorders. Within this context, it has been documented that multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune inflammatory, demyelinating, and neurodegenerative disease of the CNS, is associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, including constipation, dysphagia, and faecal incontinence. Moreover, some evidence suggests the existence of an altered gut microbiota (GM) composition in MS patients with respect to healthy individuals, as well as the potential influence of GM dysbiosis on typical MS features, including increased intestinal permeability, disruption of blood-brain barrier integrity, chronic inflammation, and altered T cells differentiation. Starting from these assumptions, the possible involvement of GM alteration in MS pathogenesis seems likely, and its restoration could represent a supplemental beneficial strategy against this disabling disease. In this regard, the present review will explore possible preventive approaches (including several dietary interventions, the administration of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics, and the use of faecal microbiota transplantation) to be pursued as prophylaxis or in combination with pharmacological treatments with the aim of re-establishing a proper GM, thus helping to prevent the development of this disease or to manage it by alleviating symptoms or slowing down its progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation is a significant factor in adverse health outcomes, but the combined effects of diets with varying oxidation levels and exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on inflammation are not well understood. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of the recognized Dietary Oxidative Balance Score (DOBS) and five VOCs on the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and C-reactive protein (CRP). METHODS This cross-sectional study included data from participants in three cycles (2003-2004, 2005-2006, 2009-2010) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We used Spearman correlation, logistic regression, and trend tests to explore the associations between DOBS, VOCs, SII, and CRP. Additionally, we conducted restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis to assess dose-response relationships between exposure and effect. G-computation and stratified analyses were performed to further elucidate these associations. RESULTS We included 7033 eligible participants, with 48.8 % males and 51.2 % females. Spearman correlation revealed that DOBS was negatively correlated with SII and CRP, while the five VOCs were positively correlated with SII and CRP. Although fully adjusted logistic regression models did not yield statistically significant results, trend tests indicated a gradual decrease in SII and CRP with increasing DOBS, a finding validated by RCS analysis. G-computation results demonstrated that the combined effect of DOBS and VOCs on inflammation was positive, with DOBS exerting a negative effect and benzene, ethylbenzene, and 1,4-dichlorobenzene exerting positive effects. Stratified analysis showed that maintaining physical activity significantly influenced the effects of DOBS and VOCs on inflammation. CONCLUSION This study suggests that adjusting dietary structure and reducing daily exposure to VOCs can effectively reduce inflammation in the body.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common condition in female. Oxidative stress and inflammation levels play important roles in UI progression. Mediterranean diet (MD) as a healthy anti-inflammatory dietary pattern has been reported to be associated with several inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to assess the association between the adherence to Mediterranean diet (aMED) and female UI. METHODS Data of study women aged ≥18 years old and diagnosed as stress UI and urgency UI were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. Dietary intake information was obtained by 24-h dietary recall interview. Covariates included sociodemographic information, physical examination, and history of diseases and medication were extracted from the database. The weighted univariable and multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between aMED and different types of UI, with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analysis were further evaluated this association based on different age, body mass index (BMI), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), depression and smoking. RESULTS Totally, 13,291 women were included, of whom 5,921 (44.55%) had stress UI, 4276 (32.17%) had urgency UI and 2570 (19.34%) had mixed UI. After adjusted all covariates, high aMED score was associated with the lower odds of urgency (OR = 0.86, 95%CI: 0.75-0.98) and mixed UI (OR = 0.84, 95%CI: 0.70-0.99), especially in female, aged 45-60 years old, NLR ≥1.68 and had smoking history. No relationship was found between the aMED and stress UI (P >0.05). CONCLUSION Greater aMED was connected with the low odds of urgency UI and mixed UI among female. Adherence to an anti-inflammatory diet in daily life are a promising intervention to be further explored in female UI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence suggests a potential causal association between lipid levels and facial aging. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between levels of specific lipids and facial aging via Mendelian randomization methods. Additionally, this study aimed to identify mediators and explore relevant genes and drug targets. METHODS In this study, genome-wide association data on plasma lipids from 7,174 Finnish individuals in the UK Biobank were used. Two-sample Mendelian randomization was applied to assess the causal effects of specific lipids on facial aging. Sensitivity and pleiotropy analyses were conducted to ensure the robustness and reliability of the results. Multivariate Mendelian randomization was conducted to account for the potential impact of confounding factors. Furthermore, summary-data-based Mendelian randomization was used to identify relevant genes, which were validated through multiomics data. Finally, drug‒gene interactions were explored via molecular docking techniques. RESULTS Two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis revealed a causal relationship between lipid levels and facial aging. According to the multivariate Mendelian randomization results, smoking was found to mediate this association, and these lipids remained significantly associated with facial aging, even after accounting for environmental confounders. Using summary-data-based Mendelian randomization, CYP21A2, CCND1, PSMA4, and MED1 were identified as potential gene targets, with MED1 further validated through pQTL and mQTL data. Additionally, the MED1 protein was found to bind spontaneously with astragalin, fenofibrate, and ginsenoside. CONCLUSIONS The results revealed a causal relationship between lipid levels and facial aging, revealing key gene targets that were still significantly associated with facial aging after controlling for environmental confounders. Additionally, the interactions between MED1 and certain drugs may indicate potential pathways for therapeutic interventions related to facial aging.

Abstract
In recent years, the prevalence of metabolic diseases has increased significantly, posing a serious threat to global health. Chronic low-grade inflammation is implicated in the development of most metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease, serving as a link between diet and these conditions. Increasing attention has been directly toward dietary inflammatory patterns that may prevent or ameliorate metabolic diseases. The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) was developed to assess the inflammatory potential of dietary intake. Consequently, a growing body of research has examined the associations between the DII and the risk of several metabolic diseases. In this review, we explore the current scientific literature on the relationships between the DII, T2DM, obesity, and dyslipidemia. It summarizes recent findings and explore potential underlying mechanisms from two aspects: the interaction between diet and inflammation, and the link between inflammation and metabolic diseases. Furthermore, this review discusses the therapeutic strategies, including dietary modifications, prebiotics, and probiotics, and discusses the application of the DII in metabolic diseases, as well as future research directions.

Abstract
This paper investigates the complex relationship between the immune system and male reproductive processes, emphasizing how chronic inflammation can adversely affect male reproductive health. The immune system plays a dual role; it protects and regulates reproductive organs and spermatogenesis while maintaining reproductive health through immune privilege in the testes and the activities of various immune cells and cytokines. However, when chronic inflammation persists or intensifies, it can disrupt this balance, leading to immune attacks on reproductive tissues and resulting in infertility.This study provides a detailed analysis of how chronic inflammation can impair sperm production, sperm quality, and the secretion of gonadal hormones both directly and indirectly. It also delves into the critical roles of testicular immune privilege, various immune cells, and cytokines in sustaining reproductive health and examines the impacts of infections, autoimmune diseases, and environmental factors on male fertility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although healthy lifestyle has been linked with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the potential metabolic mechanism underlying this association remains unknown. METHODS We included 161,018 CVD-free participants from the UK Biobank. Elastic net regression was utilized to generate a healthy lifestyle-related metabolic signature. The Cox proportional hazards model was applied to investigate associations of lifestyle-related metabolic signature with incident CVDs, and mediation analysis was conducted to evaluate the potential mediating role of metabolic profile on the healthy lifestyle-CVD association. Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted to detect the causality. RESULTS During 13 years of follow-up, 17,030 participants developed incident CVDs. A healthy lifestyle-related metabolic signature comprising 123 metabolites was established, and it was inversely associated with CVDs. The hazard ratio (HR) was 0.83 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.81, 0.84) for CVD, 0.83 (95% CI: 0.81, 0.84) for ischemic heart disease (IHD), 0.86 (95% CI: 0.83, 0.90) for stroke, 0.86 (95% CI: 0.82, 0.89) for myocardial infarction (MI), and 0.75 (95% CI: 0.72, 0.77) for heart failure (HF) per standard deviation increase in the metabolic signature. The metabolic signature accounted for 20% of the association between healthy lifestyle score and CVD. Moreover, MR showed a potential causal association between the metabolic signature and stroke. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed a potential link between a healthy lifestyle, metabolic signatures, and CVD. This connection suggests that identifying an individual's metabolic status and implementing lifestyle modifications may provide novel insights into the prevention of CVD.

Abstract
Recent years have witnessed a rather controversial debate on what antioxidants are and how beneficial they may be in the context of human health. Despite a considerable increase in scientific evidence, the matter remains highly divisive as different pieces of new data seem to support both the pro- and the anti-antioxidant perspective. Here, we argue that the matter at the heart of this debate is not necessarily empirical but of semantics. Thus, the controversy cannot be resolved with the traditional tools of natural sciences and by the mere accumulation of new data. In fact, the term "antioxidants" has been part of the scientific language game for a few decades and is nowadays used differently in the context of different scientific disciplines active at different levels of scientific complexity. It, therefore, represents not a single expression but an entire family of words with distinctively different connotations and associations. The transcendent use of this expression from a basic to a more complex discipline, such as going from chemistry to physiology, is problematic as it assigns the term with connotations that are not corroborated empirically. This may lead to false claims and aspirations not warranted by empirical data. Initially, health claims may not even be indented, yet, on occasion, they are welcome for reasons other than scientific ones. To resolve this debate, one may need to refrain from using the term "antioxidants" in disciplines and contexts where its meaning is unclear, limit its use to disciplines where it is essential and beneficial, and, in any case, become more specific in such contexts where its use is warranted, for instance, in the case of "dietary antioxidants".

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Food is a critical factor of chronic inflammation. Few studies tried to quantize inflammatory effects of food. Moreover, the discrepancies in inflammatory effects among foods within the same food group are frequently ignored. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare inflammatory effects of food based on Food Composition Tables via a Food Inflammation Index (FII). We aimed to reveal heterogeneity within food groups in dietary guidelines and identify the key components. METHODS The FII was adapted from Dietary Inflammation Index (DII) with a weighted algorithm, validated by NHANES.The Food Inflammation Scores of Individuals (FISI) of various dietary patterns were analyzed and compared. FII scores were converted to percentages for intuitive grading using the United States Department of Agriculture Food Composition Table (USDA-FCT), and China-FCT was also used for validation.The FII scores of various food groups based on USDA-FCT and dietary guidelines were counted and compared to reveal the heterogeneity within food groups. RESULTS FII proves effective in delineating food inflammatory effects. It reveals substantial inflammatory risk even with adherence to the Mediterranean diet, highlighting the need to address intra-group heterogeneity. Within USDA-FCT, nuts and select vegetable oils (rich in flavonoids and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids) are notable anti-inflammatory foods, contrasting with pro-inflammatory meats high in saturated fats. According to the current dietary nutrition guidelines, the inflammatory effects of food groups vary greatly. Further subdivision of food groups can weaken the problem of heterogeneity within food groups, thereby providing more accurate dietary recommendations. CONCLUSION Quantifying the inflammatory effects of whole foods is important for general consumers to realize their own dietary inflammatory exposure risk. The FII reveals the heterogeneity within food groups and can be a reference for dietary recommendations. This public tool could be beneficial for consumer choice, dietary guideline revision, science research for healthier eating.

Abstract
To investigate the association between the Dietary Total Antioxidant Capacity (dTAC) and the Total Antioxidant Capacity of food groups (fgTAC) with the sleep time of Brazilian graduates participating in the Cohort of Universities of Minas Gerais (CUME Study). This cross-sectional study analyzed 6,387 graduates (2,052 men, 4,335 women, 35.3 ± 9.3 years old) from the CUME Study. Data was collected online, and dTAC was obtained by the Ferric Reduction Antioxidant Power (FRAP) method. Daily sleep time was classified as short sleep, normal sleep, and long sleep (≤6, 7-8, and ≥9 h, respectively). Multinomial logistic regression models were used to estimate the Odds Ratio (OR) and its 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) between short sleep and long sleep with quartiles of dTAC and the fgTAC. Lower odds of short sleep was observed for the third quartile of dTAC and for fourth quartile of fgTAC of fruits, beans, and lentils, and for the third quartile of fgTAC of vegetables and oils and fats. Higher odds of short sleep for the fourth quartile of fgTAC of teas and coffees. For long sleep, inverse associations were observed for the fourth quartile of fgTAC of oilseeds and the third quartile of fgTAC of teas and coffees. Higher odds of long sleep were observed for the third quartile of artificial juices and sodas. We cannot independently assert an association between higher dTAC and sleep time. In turn, the associations between sleep time and fgTAC show the importance of the food matrix that antioxidants are inserted, requiring longitudinal studies to observe the direction of associations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) characterized by cyclic symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, presents an uncertain etiology in adolescents involving hormonal fluctuations and serotonin-related neurotransmitters with a limited existing literature on the impact of oxidative stress. This study aimed to explore the potential association between PMS and oxidative stress in adolescents. METHODS In a cross-sectional study conducted at a university hospital, involving 45 adolescent girls aged 12 to 18, participants were categorized based on the presence or absence of PMS using the cut-off point of 110 on the PMS Scale developed by Gençdoğan. Oxidative stress was assessed through dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis. The shift from the balance towards disulfide form is associated with oxidative stress, whereas towards thiol it shows a greater antioxidant capacity. RESULTS Thirty out of the forty-five participants were found to have PMS with a mean age of 15.5 years. The PMS group demonstrated a significant increase in antioxidant markers, specifically elevated native (631.6±57.55 vs 598.2±41.08, p=0.048) and total thiol levels (675.15±3.4 vs 639.3±44.9, p=0.031). Despite a significant increase in thiol, thiol to disulfide ratio was not found to be significant (p=0.849). CONCLUSION Contradictory to other studies in adults, we have demonstrated an increase in the antioxidant markers in adolescents with PMS. Elevated antioxidant status in adolescents with PMS may be an adaptive response to acute cyclic inflammation in the adolescent period, which might decrease with the progression of age. Further research is needed to investigate the complex interaction between oxidative stress and PMS across different age groups.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is an essential contributor to the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A systematic assessment of diet patterns and lifestyle with the oxidative balance score (OBS) to reflect oxidative stress levels will help predict the risk of COPD. This study conducted a cross-sectional analysis to assess the link between OBS and COPD. 5162 participants were collected from 2013 to 2018 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariate logistic regression models were applied to assess the relationship between OBS and COPD prevalence. The linearity of the association was explored using smoothed curve fitting. In addition, further subgroup analysis and interaction tests were conducted to ascertain the consistency of the relationship across diverse populations. Results of the multivariate logistic regression models indicated a negative association between OBS and the odds of COPD prevalence. Each incremental unit in OBS correlated with a 3% reduction in the odds of COPD in the fully adjusted model (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.95-0.99). Further analysis by OBS tertiles indicated that individuals in the highest OBS tertile (T3) had a 17% lower probability of COPD compared to those in the lowest tertile (T1) in the fully adjusted model (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.64-0.97). The smoothed curve fitting supported the negative association between OBS and COPD. Subgroup analyses revealed that the protective effect of OBS was notably pronounced among the non-hypertensive and non-diabetic populations. These findings suggest a negative link between OBS and COPD, underscoring the importance of antioxidant-rich diets and lifestyles in preventing COPD.

Abstract
The association of Healthy Eating Index 2020 (HEI-2020), especially its components with systemic inflammatory biomarkers, has not been examined. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between HEI-2020 and its components with systemic inflammatory biomarkers, and to provide a dietary pattern suggestion to combat systemic inflammation. Participants aged 20 years and older with complete information on two reliable dietary recalls, blood cell counts and demographic characteristics, were recruited from six NHANES cycles from 2007 to 2018. Weighted general linear methods showed that HEI-2020 was negatively associated with systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI). Weighted quantile regression (WQS) models and quantile g-computation (QGC) models supported the negative association between the mixed components and systemic inflammation. High intakes of whole fruits, whole grains, greens and beans, and seafood and plant proteins, along with a low intake of added sugars, were associated with reduced systemic inflammation. In contrast, the scores of sodium, dairy, total protein, and refined grains showed no significant effect. Briefly, our study provides an anti-inflammatory dietary pattern suggestion based on the 13 components of HEI-2020 and Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to examine the relationship of 2 dietary scores [dietary inflammatory index (DII) and composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI)] with frailty in elderly adults with diabetes. METHODS Data were gathered from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2018. The frailty index was calculated using 49 deficits across various systems to define frailty. To examine the relationship of 2 dietary scores (DII and CDAI) with frailty in elderly adults with diabetes, multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. In logistic regression model, DII and CDAI were calculated as both continuous and tertiles. Subgroup analyses were performed to demonstrate stability of results. Restricted cubic splines were utilized to examine the non-linear correlations. RESULTS A total of 2,795 elderly adults with diabetes were included in this study. In the multivariate logistic regression model, the odds ratio (OR) of DII for risk of frailty was 1.08 (95% CI 1.02-1.15) and the OR of CDAI for risk of frailty was 0.96 (95% CI 0.93-0.99). The ORs of DII for risk of frailty were 1.36 (95% CI 1.09-1.70) and 1.33 (95% CI 1.04-1.70) for tertiles 2 and 3, respectively (p for trend 0.027). The ORs of CDAI for risk of frailty were 0.94 (95% CI 0.75-1.17) and 0.75 (95% CI 0.58-0.98) for tertiles 2 and 3, respectively (p for trend 0.036). The subgroup analysis demonstrated reliable and enduring connections between 2 dietary scores and frailty (all p for interaction > 0.05). In the restricted cubic spline analyses, we discovered the non-linear relationship between DII and frailty (P for nonlinearity = 0.045) and linear relationship between CDAI and frailty (P for nonlinearity = 0.769). CONCLUSION The research showed connections between 2 dietary scores (DII and CDAI) and frailty as measured by frailty index in elderly adults with diabetes.

Abstract
Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are known to have a regulatory effect on oxidative and inflammatory processes. This study aimed to identify the relationship between blood PUFA status and circulatory markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in a cohort of 172 subjects. The population was divided by sex and into three age groups: adults (18-64 years old, n = 69), older adults (65-89 years old, n = 54), and long-lived individuals (LLIs, 90-111 years old, n = 49). Whole blood PUFA content was quantified using gas chromatography. Additionally, serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), paraoxonase (PON), Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured. Our results showed that a higher omega-3 (n-3) index in adult females was a predictor of lower MDA concentrations (p = 0.038). Conversely, total n-3 PUFA and total n-6 PUFA were positively related to MDA values among older adult females and LLI men (p < 0.05), while total n-6 PUFA was inversely correlated with MDA levels in LLI females (p < 0.05). Interestingly, increased concentrations of total n-3 PUFA and n-3 index were positively correlated with higher TEAC values in LLI men (p = 0.007), while the arachidonic acid (AA)/eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) ratio was inversely correlated with TEAC values among LLI females (p = 0.006). These findings suggest that cellular antioxidant capacity is inversely correlated with changes in the AA/EPA ratio in long-lived females, whereas n-3 PUFA may enhance blood antioxidant capacity in long-lived men. Overall, our study highlights the complex, sex-specific interactions between PUFA profiles and oxidative stress and inflammatory markers across different age groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder, in which chronic systemic inflammation and oxidative stress contribute to the progression of this condition and its complications. Melatonin, a hormone known for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has emerged as a potential therapeutic intervention in diabetes. This review aims to evaluate the effects of melatonin supplementation on markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in diabetic patients. METHODS A thorough literature search of databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, CNKI, and Scopus, was conducted through October 2023. We included randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of melatonin on markers of inflammation and oxidative stress, compared to placebo in patients with diabetes. The data was analyzed using the random-effects model and the summary effect size was determined using the standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Fourteen studies with 823 participants were included. Our analysis indicates that melatonin can lead to significant reductions in levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) [SMD = -0.75; 95% CI: -1.37, -0.12; P = 0.018], tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) [SMD = -0.40; 95% CI: -0.64, -0.15; P = 0.001], interleukin (IL)-1 [SMD = -0.75; 95% CI: -1.03, -0.47; P < 0.0001], IL-6 [SMD = -0.79; 95% CI: -1.07, -0.51; P < 0.0001], and malondialdehyde (MDA) [SMD = -0.61; 95% CI: -0.80, -0.43; P < 0.0001]. Furthermore, we found a significant increase in levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) [SMD = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.12, 1.51; P = 0.021], glutathione (GSH) [SMD = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.28, 1.03; P = 0.001], and superoxide dismutase (SOD) [SMD = 1.69; 95% CI: 0.80, 2.58; P < 0.0001] following melatonin consumption in patients with diabetes. CONCLUSION Melatonin supplementation is a promising complementary strategy to attenuate oxidative stress and inflammation in diabetic patients.

Abstract
Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic health reflects the interactions between metabolic risk factors, chronic kidney disease, and the cardiovascular system. A growing body of literature suggests that metabolic syndrome (MetS) in individuals of normal weight is associated with a high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and an increased mortality. The aim of this study was to establish a non-invasive preclinical model of MetS in support of future research focusing on the effects of novel antidiabetic therapies beyond glucose reduction, independent of obesity. Eighteen healthy adult Beagle dogs were fed an isocaloric Western diet (WD) for ten weeks. Biospecimens were collected at baseline (BAS1) and after ten weeks of WD feeding (BAS2) for measurement of blood pressure (BP), serum chemistry, lipoprotein profiling, blood glucose, glucagon, insulin secretion, NT-proBNP, angiotensins, oxidative stress biomarkers, serum, urine, and fecal metabolomics. Differences between BAS1 and BAS2 were analyzed using non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank testing. The isocaloric WD model induced significant variations in several markers of MetS, including elevated BP, increased glucose concentrations, and reduced HDL-cholesterol. It also caused an increase in circulating NT-proBNP levels, a decrease in serum bicarbonate, and significant changes in general metabolism, lipids, and biogenic amines. Short-term, isocaloric feeding with a WD in dogs replicated key biological features of MetS while also causing low-grade metabolic acidosis and elevating natriuretic peptides. These findings support the use of the WD canine model for studying the metabolic effects of new antidiabetic therapies independent of obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The relationship between dietary patterns and cirrhosis is undeniable. The present study aimed to investigate the association between the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and the risk of mortality in patients with cirrhosis prospectively. METHODS In this cohort study, 121 cirrhotic patients were enrolled and followed up annually for four years. Nutritional status and dietary intakes were assessed initially, and the DASH score was calculated accordingly. Crude and multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard analyses. RESULTS DASH components including fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds, and low-fat dairy products were significantly associated with lower mortality risk in cirrhotic patients. Also, a higher DASH score was significantly associated with a reduction in the risk of mortality in patients with cirrhosis, so that after adjusting for all confounders, the risk of mortality in the upper tertile was 89% lower than the first tertile (HR = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.03-0.42, P trend < 0.001). The 4-year survival rate among patients across tertiles of DASH was 32%, 37%, and 46%, respectively (P = 0.005). CONCLUSION It can be concluded that a higher DASH diet score may be associated with a reduced risk of mortality in cirrhotic patients. However, larger studies are needed to confirm the findings and determine their potential mechanisms.

Abstract
Pregnancy is a time of high metabolic coordination, as maternal metabolism adapts to support the growing fetus. Many of these changes are coordinated by the placenta, a critical fetal endocrine organ and the site of maternal-fetal crosstalk. Dysregulation in maternal and placental metabolism during pregnancy has been linked to adverse outcomes, including altered neurodevelopment. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder linked to metabolic alterations in both children and their mothers. Prenatal environmental exposures have been linked to risk of ASD through dysregulated maternal, placental, and fetal metabolism. In this review, we focus on recent studies investigating the associations between prenatal metabolism in the maternal-placental-fetal unit and the impact of prenatal environmental exposures to phthalates and micronutrients on ASD risk. By identifying the mechanisms through which phthalates and other ubiquitous endocrine disrupting chemicals influence development, and how nutritional interventions can impact those mechanisms, we can identify promising ways to prevent suboptimal neurodevelopment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a neuronal injury with poor prognosis. Mitochondrial dysfunction is critical in SAE development, and hydrogen gas (H2) has a protective effect on septic mice. This study aimed to investigate the effect of high concentration (67%) of H2 on SAE and whether it is related to mitochondrial biogenesis and mitochondrial dynamics. METHODS A mouse sepsis model was induced by cecal ligation and puncture. The mice inhalated 67% H2 for 1 h at 1 and 6 h post-surgery, respectively. The 7-day survival rate was recorded. Cognitive function was assessed using the Y-maze test and Morris water maze test. Serum inflammatory factors, antioxidant enzymes, as well as mitochondrial function indexes including mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and ATP in the hippocampal tissue were evaluated 24 h after surgery. Mitochondrial dynamic proteins (DRP1 and MFN2) and biosynthetic proteins (PGC-1α, NRF2, and TFAM) in the hippocampal tissue were detected. Moreover, the morphology of mitochondria was observed by transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS Inhalation of 67% H2 improved the 7-day survival rates and recognition memory function of septic mice, alleviated brain antioxidant enzyme activity (SOD and CAT), and reduced serum proinflammatory cytokine levels. H2 inhalation also enhanced the expression of MFN2 and mitochondrial biogenesis-related factors (PGC-1α, NRF2, and TFAM) and decreased the expression of fission protein (DRP1), leading to improvement in mitochondrial function, as evidenced by MMP and ATP levels. CONCLUSIONS Inhalation of high concentration (67%) of H2 in septic mice improved the survival rate and reduced neuronal injury. Its mechanism might be mediated by enhancing mitochondrial biogenesis and mitochondrial dynamics.

Abstract
The human gastrointestinal tract hosts a complex and dynamic community of microorganisms known as the gut microbiota, which play a pivotal role in numerous physiological processes, including digestion, metabolism, and immune function. Recent research has highlighted the significant impact of diet on the gut microbiota composition and functionality, and the consequential effects on host health. Concurrently, there is growing evidence linking the gut microbiota to inflammation, a key factor in many chronic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This review explores how dietary components influence the gut microbiota composition, how these microbial changes affect inflammatory pathways, and the therapeutic implications of modulating this axis for chronic inflammatory disease prevention and management. Beneficial dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet (MD) and plant-based diets, promote a diverse and balanced gut microbiota composition, supporting anti-inflammatory pathways. Conversely, the Western diet (WD), high in saturated fats and refined sugars, is associated with dysbiosis and increased inflammation. With all the links between the three variables considered, this review attempts to offer a thorough examination of the triangle formed by inflammation, the gut microbiota, and food.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study focused on the association of the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS Data from two cycles of NHANES (2007-2010) were analyzed. Weighted logistic regression models were constructed to explore the relationship between DII and GDM. Stratified and subgroup analyses with adjustment for confounding factors were carried out to explore the association between DII and GDM. Mediation analysis was conducted to investigate potential mediating factors. RESULTS A total of 1,421 samples were analyzed. Based on the weighted logistic regression model, a strong positive association was observed between DII score and GDM risk (OR: 1.14, 95%CI: 1.02-1.26, P<0.01), suggesting that a pro-inflammatory diet could considerably increase the likelihood of GDM occurrence. This positive association was particularly significant in populations who consume alcohol (OR:1.17, 95%CI: 1.03-1.34, P<0.01) and have a body mass index>30 kg/m² (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01-1.38, P<0.05). Mediation analysis indicated that the white blood cell count mediated the association between DII and GDM, with an indirect effect of 0.000828 (95% CI: 0.000226-0.001347, P=0.001) and a mediation proportion of 8.01%. Specifically, the neutrophil count as a component contributed to this mediation effect (0.000774, 95% CI: 0.00014-0.001063, P=0.001), with a mediation proportion of 7.59%. CONCLUSION A pro-inflammatory diet in women elevates the likelihood of GDM occurrence. An anti-inflammatory dietary pattern may be a protective intervention for GDM.

Abstract
The role of diet in colorectal cancer prognosis is not well understood and specific lifestyle recommendations are lacking. We searched for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and longitudinal observational studies on post-diagnosis dietary factors, supplement use and colorectal cancer survival outcomes in PubMed and Embase from inception until 28th February 2022. Random-effects dose-response meta-analyses were conducted when at least three studies had sufficient information. The evidence was interpreted and graded by the CUP Global independent Expert Committee on Cancer Survivorship and Expert Panel. Five RCTs and 35 observational studies were included (30,242 cases, over 8700 all-cause and 2100 colorectal cancer deaths, 3700 progression, recurrence, or disease-free events). Meta-analyses, including 3-10 observational studies each, were conducted for: whole grains, nuts/peanuts, red and processed meat, dairy products, sugary drinks, artificially sweetened beverages, coffee, alcohol, dietary glycaemic load/index, insulin load/index, marine omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, supplemental calcium, circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) and all-cause mortality; for alcohol, supplemental calcium, circulating 25(OH)D and colorectal cancer-specific mortality; and for circulating 25(OH)D and recurrence/disease-free survival. The overall evidence was graded as 'limited'. The inverse associations between healthy dietary and/or lifestyle patterns (including diets that comprised plant-based foods), whole grains, total, caffeinated, or decaffeinated coffee and all-cause mortality and the positive associations between unhealthy dietary patterns, sugary drinks and all-cause mortality provided 'limited-suggestive' evidence. All other exposure-outcome associations provided 'limited-no conclusion' evidence. Additional, well-conducted cohort studies and carefully designed RCTs are needed to develop specific lifestyle recommendations for colorectal cancer survivors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Diet can modulate systemic inflammation, while inflammation is a critical contributory factor of frailty. However, longitudinal data on the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and frailty are limited, and the intermediate mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between DII and incident frailty and the potential mediating roles of frailty-related biomarkers. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING The Mr. OS and Ms. OS (Hong Kong) study. PARTICIPANTS A total of 3,035 community-dwelling men and women aged above 65 years without frailty at baseline were included. MEASUREMENTS DII scores were calculated using the locally validated food frequency questionnaire. Incident frailty at year four was defined using the Fried frailty phenotype. Logistic regression was used to examine the association between DII and frailty onset. Mediation analysis was used to explore the mediating roles of frailty-related biomarkers in the DII-frailty association. RESULTS During four years of follow-up, 208 individuals developed frailty. Compared with the lowest tertile of DII, the highest tertile was associated with an increased risk of incident frailty (OR: 1.82; 95% CI: 1.17-2.82; p = 0.008) after adjustment for relevant confounders. The DII-frailty association was significant in men but not in women. Furthermore, increasing serum homocysteine, decreasing serum folate, and reducing estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) mediated 11.6%, 7.1%, and 9.6 % of the total relation between DII and frailty onset, respectively. CONCLUSION In this cohort study, a pro-inflammatory diet was associated with a higher risk of frailty onset, mediated by homocysteine, folate, and renal function.

Abstract
Background: Diet and body mass index (BMI) are widely recognized as being closely associated with aging. However, it remains unclear which dietary indices are associated with aging, and the extent to which BMI mediates the relationship between diet and aging. Therefore, this study investigates the mediating role of BMI in the association between various dietary indices and phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel). Methods: Data were sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), using two 24 hour recall interviews to compute four dietary indices: the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), Healthy Eating Index-2020 (HEI-2020), Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010), and Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI). Linear regression analyses and mediation analyses assessed the associations between dietary indices and PhenoAgeAccel and the mediating effects of BMI. Z-score transformations (zDII, zHEI-2020, zAHEI-2010, and zCDAI) were used to ensure comparability between different dietary indices. Results: After adjusting for covariates, the zHEI-2020, zAHEI-2010, and zCDAI were negatively associated with PhenoAgeAccel (P < 0.05), with β values being -0.36, -0.40, and -0.41, respectively. The zDII was positively associated with PhenoAgeAccel (P < 0.001) with a β value of 0.70. Mediation analyses suggested that BMI significantly mediated the relationships between these dietary indices and PhenoAgeAccel. The mediation proportions were 23.7% for zDII, 43.3% for zHEI-2020, 24.5% for zAHEI-2010, and 23.6% for zCDAI. Conclusions: This study indicates that all dietary indices and BMI were significantly associated with PhenoAgeAccel. In addition, BMI exhibited the highest mediation proportion in the relationship between HEI-2020 and PhenoAgeAccel.

Abstract
Previous studies mostly focused on the benefits of caloric restriction and fasting on longevity. However, whether the timing and frequency of eating affect aging remains unclear. Here, we investigated the associations between chrononutrition patterns and biological aging, and explored whether and to what extent dietary inflammation mediated this association. 16 531 adults aged 20 to 84 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were collected. Chrononutrition patterns were determined with two 24-hour dietary recalls. Phenotypic age was calculated to reflect the biological aging status. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) was used to assess the dietary inflammation. After adjustment of the survey weight and multiple covariates including total energy intake, participants in the third tertile of the time of the first meal (mean 10 : 26) exhibited more advanced biological age (β 0.64; 95% CI, 0.26-1.00) and a higher incidence of accelerated aging (odds ratio (OR) 1.25; 95% CI, 1.06-1.47) compared to those of the first tertile (mean 6 : 14). Higher eating frequency was associated with delayed biological aging in both multivariable linear (β -0.31; 95% CI, -0.44 to -0.19) and logistic regression model (OR 0.90; 95% CI, 0.85-0.95). Furthermore, we found that DII rather than metabolic factors mediated the inverse association between eating frequency and biological aging (mediation proportion 24.67%; 95% CI, 19.83%-32.00%). Our findings demonstrated the association between chrononutrition patterns and biological aging among the US general population and the potential role of dietary inflammation in this association, suggesting that modifying chrononutrition patterns may be a practical and cost-effective strategy for combating aging.
