Bioaccumulation and trophic magnification of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors in a Mediterranean river food web

Water self-purification via electron donation effect of emerging contaminants arousing oxygen activation over ordered carbon-enhanced CoFe quantum dots

The release of emerging contaminants (ECs) into aquatic environments poses a significant risk to global water security. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), while effective in removing ECs, are often resource and energy-intensive. Here, we introduce a novel catalyst, CoFe quantum dots embedded in graphene nanowires (CoFeQds@GN-Nws), synthesized through anaerobic polymerization. It uniquely features electron-rich and electron-poor micro-regions on its surface, enabling a self-purification mechanism in wastewater. This is achieved by harnessing the internal energy of wastewater, particularly the bonding energy of pollutants and dissolved oxygen (DO). It demonstrates exceptional efficiency in removing ECs at ambient temperature and pressure without the need for external oxidants, achieving a removal rate of nearly 100.0%. The catalyst's structure-activity relationship reveals that CoFe quantum dots facilitate an unbalanced electron distribution, forming these micro-regions. This leads to a continuous electron-donation effect, where pollutants are effectively cleaved or oxidized. Concurrently, DO is activated into superoxide anions (O2•-), synergistically aiding in pollutant removal. This approach reduces resource and energy demands typically associated with AOPs, marking a sustainable advancement in wastewater treatment technologies.

Adsorption Capacity of Carbon-Silica Composites Towards Diclofenac in Poly(acrylic acid) Containing Systems: A Crucial Study on Common Wastewater Contaminants

Diclofenac is one of the most popular over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and poly(acrylic acid) is a frequently used as thickener, filler or stabilizer. For these reasons, they are common organic contaminants in raw wastewater. The purpose of the presented studies was to compare the adsorption capacity of three carbon-silica composites - metal-free C/SiO2, iron-enriched C/Fe/SiO2 and manganese-enriched C/Mn/SiO2 towards diclofenac. The studies were carried out in single, and mixed systems in the presence of poly(acrylic acid) polymer. Adsorption, desorption and kinetics of the adsorption process were investigated. The concentration of diclofenac in the supernatants was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. The solids were also characterized with an ASAP apparatus using low-temperature nitrogen desorption adsorption isotherms at liquid nitrogen temperature. In addition, potentiometric titrations and electrophoretic mobility measurements, as well as stability tests of the studied suspensions were carried out. The most efficient composite among investigated ones proved to be C/Fe/SiO2 removing diclofenac at the level of 46.68 mg/g for its initial concentration of 90 ppm. The results obtained clearly demonstrated that the carbon-silica composites are effective in separation of drugs from aqueous solutions and can be successfully used in the future for the removal of organic pollutants from water environment.

Selection of pharmaceuticals of concern in reclaimed water for crop irrigation in the Mediterranean area

The reuse of reclaimed water in agriculture is being fostered in areas suffering from water scarcity. However, water pollutants can compromise food safety and pose a risk for the environment. This study aims to select the pharmaceutical compounds worth monitoring and investigating when reclaimed water is used for tomato and lettuce irrigation. A comprehensive study was first conducted to identify the pharmaceuticals frequently detected in secondary wastewater effluents in Catalonia (Northeast Spain). Priority pharmaceuticals were further selected based on their occurrence in secondary effluents, persistence (removal in conventional treatment), bioaccumulation potential, toxicity for aquatic organisms, and the risks they pose to the terrestrial environment and human health (through the consumption of crops). Out of the 47 preselected priority compounds, six could pose a risk to organisms living in soil irrigated with reclaimed water and seven could be potentially taken up by the crops. Nonetheless, no risk for human consumption was foreseen.

New insights into pesticide occurrence and multicompartmental monitoring strategies in stream ecosystems using periphyton and suspended sediment

Streams are susceptible to pesticide pollutants which are transported outside of the intended area of application from surrounding agricultural fields. It is essential to monitor the occurrence and levels of pesticides in aquatic ecosystems to comprehend their effects on the aquatic environment. The common sampling strategy used for monitoring pesticides in stream ecosystems is through the collection and analysis of grab water samples. However, grab water sampling may not effectively monitor pesticides due to its limited ability to capture temporal and spatial variability, potentially missing fluctuations and uneven distribution of pesticides in aquatic environments. Monitoring using periphyton and sediment sampling may offer a more comprehensive approach by accounting for accumulative processes and temporal variations. Periphyton are a collective of microorganisms that grow on hard surfaces in aquatic ecosystems. They are responsive to chemical and biological changes in the environment, and therefore have the potential to act as a cost-effective, integrated sampling tool to monitor pesticide exposures in aquatic ecosystems. The objective of this study was to assess pesticides detected through periphyton, suspended sediment, and conventional grab water sampling methods and identify the matrix that offers a more comprehensive characterization of a stream's pesticide exposure profile. Ten streams across Southern Ontario were sampled in 2021 and 2022. At each stream site, water, sediment and periphyton, colonizing both artificial and natural substrates, were collected and analyzed for the presence of ~500 pesticides. Each of the three matrices detected distinctive pesticide exposure profiles. The frequency of detection in periphyton, sediment and water matrices were related to pesticides' log Kow and log Koc (P < 0.05). In addition, periphyton bioconcentrated 22 pesticides above levels observed in the ambient water. The bioconcentration factors of pesticides in periphyton can be predicted from their log Kow (simple linear regressions, P < 0.05). The results demonstrate that sediment and periphyton accumulate pesticides in stream environments. This highlights the importance of monitoring pesticide exposure using these matrices to ensure a complete and comprehensive characterization of exposure in stream ecosystems.

Pharmaceutical residues in stranded dolphins in the Bay of Biscay

There is a growing concern about the presence of pharmaceuticals on the aquatic environment, while the marine environment has been much less investigated than in freshwater. Marine mammals are suitable sentinel species of the marine environment because they often feed at high trophic levels, have unique fat stores and long lifespan. Some small delphinids in particular serve as excellent sentinel species for contamination in the marine environment worldwide. To the best of our knowledge, no pharmaceuticals have been detected or reported in dolphins so far. In the present study, muscle, liver and blubber samples from three common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and seven striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) stranded along the Basque Coast (northern Spain) were collected. A total of 95 pharmaceuticals based on detectability and predicted ability to bioaccumulate in fish were included in the liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. At least one pharmaceutical was found in 70 % of the individuals. Only three of the 95 monitored pharmaceuticals were detected in dolphin's tissues. Very low concentrations (<1 ng/g) of orphenadrine and pizotifen were found in liver and promethazine in blubber. Herein, the gap in the knowledge regarding the study organisms and marine environments with respect to pharmaceutical pollution, which demands further research to understand if pharmaceuticals are a threat for these apex predators, is highlighted and discussed.

Evaluation of exposure to multiple organic pollutants in riparian communities of the Brazilian Amazon: Screening levels and potential health risks

Organic pollutants are widely distributed in the environment. Due to their physical and chemical characteristics, they tend to be biomagnified in food chains, mainly in aquatic organisms. Therefore, food consumption is a significant route of lifelong exposure. Although the Amazon River basin contains the highest freshwater biodiversity on Earth, there is scarce literature focusing on the levels of organic pollutants in the local population. The present study was aimed at assessing the levels of several environmental pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, bisphenols, parabens, and benzophenones) in urine samples from riverside communities along the Tapajós and Amazon Rivers in the Brazilian Amazon region. The results show a 100 % detection of naphthalene metabolites (namely, 1-hydroxy-naphthalene (1OH-NAP), 2-hydroxy-naphthalene (2OH-NAP)), with the highest levels belonging to benzylparaben (BzP) (17.3 ng/mL). Gender-specific analysis revealed that women had significantly higher levels of certain PAH metabolites (i.e., 1OH-NAP and 2-hydroxy-fluorene (2OH-FLU)) than men. In turn, most of the evaluated compounds were higher in urine samples from people living near the Amazon River, which presents increased traffic of boats and ships than the Tapajós River. On the other hand, the human health risk assessment suggested that all communities are at risk of suffering non-carcinogenic effects from exposure to PAHs. At the same time, they are also at risk of carcinogenic effects from exposure to benzo[a]pyrene metabolites. Thus, further studies are needed in order to evaluate the potential health effects of exposure to a mixture of these organic pollutants and other contaminants present in the area, such as mercury.

Aquatic toxicity, ecological effects, human exposure pathways and health risk assessment of liquid crystal monomers

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs), one of the key materials for liquid crystal displays, have been considered as emerging pollutants in recent years. However, the environmental behaviors of LCMs have not yet been well investigated. The toxicity data of 1173 LCMs were calculated by integrated computational simulation methods in this study. It showed that 64.6% LCMs exhibited PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic) properties. Based on the results, 1173 LCMs were identified as molecules possessing the highest level of acute toxicity to aquatic organisms. Among which, and a human health risk priority control list about LCMs was generated in this study, among which 435 were classified as requiring priority control LCMs. It was confirmed that LCMs could eventually accumulate in the human body along the aquatic food chain or penetrate the bloodstream through the dermis, thereby causing harm to health by identifying the exposure pathways of LCMs in humans. Additionally, the electronegativity of the side chain group of LCMs is the main factor causing toxicity differences; therefore, the LCMs containing halogens presented significant acute and chronic toxic effects. This study provided a more comprehensive understanding of LCMs for the public and scientific strategies for controlling LCMs.

Contaminants of emerging concern fate and fluvial biofilm status as pollution markers in an urban river

Contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) are still under research given the vast diversity of compounds reaching freshwater ecosystems and adverse effects they might cause. In this study, the environmental fate of 73 CEC, comprising sweeteners, stimulants and several pharmaceutical therapeutic classes, and changes in fluvial biofilm photosynthetic parameters were evaluated in a semi-arid urban river receiving diffuse and point sources of pollution (Suquía river, Argentina). Out of the 37 CEC detected, 30 were quantified in surface water (n.d. - 9826 ng/L), 10 in biofilm (n.d. - 204 ng/gd.w.) and 9 in the clay fraction of sediments (n.d. - 64 ng/gd.w.). CEC distribute differently among the 3 matrices: water phase presents the biggest diversity of compounds (14 CEC families), being analgesic/anti-inflammatories the most abundant family. Antibiotics largely predominated in biofilms (7 CEC families), while the stimulant caffeine and some antibiotics where the most abundant in sediments (6 CEC families). Different CEC accumulated in biofilms and sediments upstream and downstream the city, and big shifts of biofilm community occurred downstream WWTP. The shift of biofilm community upstream (F0 > 0) and downstream the WWTP (F0 = 0) shows a sensitive response of F0 to the impact of WWTP. Biofilm photosynthetic parameters responded in less impacted urban sites (sites 1, 2 and 3), where significant correlations were found between ketoprofen and some antibiotics and biofilm parameters. The diversity and amount of CEC found in the urban section of Suquía river alert to the magnitude of point and non-point sources of pollution.

First evidence of environmental bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals on adult native anurans (Rhinella arenarum) from Argentina

The presence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in surface water is well known, whereas their natural occurrence in biota is much less explored. The aim of this work was to evaluate the bioaccumulation of PhACs in adult toads of the neotropical species Rhinella arenarum. Three sites were selected in Buenos Aires (Argentina): a reference site (Site 1), a site with direct discharge from a secondary wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) (Site 2) and a site 300 m downstream of the WWTP discharge (Site 3). Surface water samples, as well as muscle, liver and fat bodies of toads were collected, extracted and analyzed by LC-MS/MS. Highly significant differences in total PhACs concentration in surface water (p < 0.005) were detected between Site 2 and the other sites. These concentrations ranged from 0.37 to 52.46 ng/L at Site 1, 0.71-6950.37 ng/L at Site 2, and 0.12-75.45 ng/L at Site 3. In general, bioaccumulation of PhACs in toad tissues was similar between sites and tissues of each site. The highest concentrations were detected in the muscle of toads from Site 3 (1.06-87.24 ng/g dw), followed by liver (1.77-38.10 ng/g dw) and fat bodies (0.68-20.59 ng/g dw) from Site 1. Ibuprofen (6950 ng/L), acetaminophen (3277 ng/L) and valsartan (2504 ng/L) were the compounds with the highest concentrations in surface water from Site 2, whereas acetaminophen (87.2 ng/g dw, muscle from Site 3), desloratadine (38.1 ng/g dw, liver from Site 1), and phenazone (25.9 ng/g dw, liver from Site 1) were the ones that showed the highest concentrations in biota. This is the first time a field study has examined the environmental bioaccumulation of PhACs in anurans, demonstrating their potential for monitoring the status of natural ecosystems.

Prevalence, distribution, accumulation, and risk of environmental corticosteroids and estrogens in biofilms from the Pearl River Delta

Biofilms play a significant role in the biogeochemical processing of organic matter and the environmental fate of emerging pollutants. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of 32 endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including 24 environmental corticosteroids (ECs) and 8 environmental estrogens (EEs), in natural biofilms from the Pearl River system. Their association between biofilms and water and environmental risk were assessed. The ECs and EEs ubiquitously occurred in the biofilms, ranging from <0.61-6.57 ng/g and <0.8-2535 ng/g, respectively. Temporally, there was no obvious variance in either ECs or EEs in the biofilms during the winter and summer, and their concentrations exhibited a spatial trend of upward to midstream, descending downstream, and then seaward attenuation at the estuary. For ECs and EEs, the similar levels of field-derived bioconcentration factors (BCFs) (logarithm values: 2.42-2.86 and 2.72-2.98, respectively) and biofilm organic carbon-normalized partitioning coefficients (Kboc) (3.39-3.69 and 3.35-3.95) suggest the comparable potential of accumulation and sorption by biofilms between these two classes of EDCs. In addition, higher values of BCF and Kboc for the EEs were found in winter and were correspondingly comparable to their distribution coefficients (Kd) and Koc derived from suspended particles and sediment, revealing that biofilms are a competitive environmental compartment for capturing EDCs, particularly during the mature period. A positive logKboc-logKow relationship suggests hydrophobic partitioning as a primary interaction mechanism between the biofilm and EEs. Moreover, high risks from biofilm-associated ECs and EEs might have posed to the fluvial ecosystem. This study provides original insights into the occurrence, fate, and risk of ECs in natural biofilms for the first time and demonstrates that biofilms may not only serve as reservoirs but also serve as sentinels for fluvial EDC contamination. These results contribute to the further understanding of the behavior and fate of EDCs in aquatic environments.

Phytoplankton Biological Pump Controls the Spatiotemporal Bioaccumulation and Trophic Transfer of Antibiotics in a Large Subtropical River

The spatiotemporal bioaccumulation, trophic transfer of antibiotics, and regulation of the phytoplankton biological pump were quantitatively evaluated in the Pearl River, South China. The occurrence of antibiotics in organisms indicated a significant spatiotemporal trend associated with the life cycle of phytoplankton. Higher temporal bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were found in phytoplankton at the bloom site, while lower BAFs of antibiotics in organisms could not be explained by phytoplankton biomass dilution but were attributed to the low bioavailability of antibiotics, which was highly associated with distribution coefficients (R2 = 0.480-0.595, p < 0.05). Such lower BAFs of antibiotics in phytoplankton at higher biomass sites hampered the entry of antibiotics into food webs, and trophic dilutions were subsequently observed for antibiotics except for ciprofloxacin (CFX) and sulfamerazine (SMZ) at sites with blooms in all seasons. Distribution of CFX, norfloxacin (NFX), and sulfapyridine (SPD) showed further significant positive relationships with the plasma protein fraction (R2 = 0.275-0.216, p < 0.05). Both mean BAFs and trophic magnification factors (TMFs) were significantly negatively correlated with phytoplankton biomass (R2 = 0.661-0.741, p < 0.05). This study highlights the importance of the biological pump in the regulation of spatiotemporal variations in bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of antibiotics in anthropogenic-impacted eutrophic rivers in subtropical regions.

Multiclass determination of drug residues in water and fish for bioaccumulation potential assessment

In this work, a wide-scope liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the quantitative determination of environmental levels of multiclass drugs and their metabolites in water and fish samples was developed. The method allowed the reliable determination of 44 drugs, covering a rather wide range of chemistries and physicochemical characteristics. In order to obtain a reliable and robust analytical protocol, different combinations of extraction and cleanup techniques were systematically examined. Aqueous samples were extracted using a simple Oasis HLB SPE enrichment protocol with pH-optimized sample percolation (pH 3). The extraction of cryo-homogenized biota samples was performed using double extraction with MeOH basified with 0.5% NH₃, which allowed high extraction recoveries for all target analytes. The problem of the coextracted lipid matrix, which is known to be the key obstacle for reliable biota analysis, was systematically examined in a series of model cleanup experiments. A combination of cryo-precipitation, filtration, and HLB SPE cleanup was proposed as a protocol, which allowed reliable and robust analysis of all target compounds at low ng/g levels. At the final conditions, the method which was validated at three concentration levels showed high extraction recoveries (68-97%), acceptable matrix effects (12 to -32%), accuracies (81-129%), and reproducibilities (3-32%) for all analytes. The developed method was used to determine drug concentrations in river water and in feral freshwater fish, including whole fish and muscle tissue, from the Sava River (Croatia), in order to estimate their corresponding bioaccumulation potential. With respect to bioaccumulation potential in whole fish and fish muscle, the most relevant drugs were lisinopril, sertraline, terbinafine, torsemide, diazepam, desloratadine, and loratadine with estimated bioaccumulation factors ranging from 20 to 838 and from 1 to 431, respectively.

Trophodynamic of endocrine disrupting compounds in the aquatic food webs: Association with hydrophobicity and biota metabolic rate

Increasing concentration of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are released into the aquatic environment, resulting in irreversible effects on the endocrine and reproductive systems of biota. How the liver enzymes affect metabolic rate of these compounds and thus their structure-related trophic transfer in aquatic food webs remains largely unknown. In this study, the concentrations of seven common EDCs were measured in 15 species of fish, 7 invertebrate species and plankton collected from Liuxi River to Pearl River, South China. The mean ΣEDC concentrations generally were found to increase as follows: plankton (29.59 ng g^-1 dw) < invertebrate species (50.69 ng g^-1 dw) < fish (122.56 ng g^-1 dw), with 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) and bisphenol S (BPS) as the predominant components. Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) values were >1.0 ranged from 1.30 (BPS) to 4.07 (4-NP), indicating trophic magnification potential. Measurement of metabolism and activities of microsomal CYP450 enzymes were performed in the fish liver microsomes of Hypophthalmichthys molitrix ([TL] = 2.27), Cirrhinus mrigala (TL = 3.87) and Odontamblyopus rubicundus (TL = 4.73). TMFs were significantly negatively correlated with the obtained in vitro biotransformation clearance rates (CL _{in vitro}) of EDCs and CYP450 enzymes activities. A multiple linear regression model indicated that biotransformation clearance is a more powerful predictor for TMFs than the hydrophobicity (Kow) to drive changes in the studied aquatic food web trophodynamics.

Bioaccumulation/bioconcentration of pharmaceutical active compounds in aquatic organisms: Assessment and factors database

There is increasing evidence that the presence of certain pharmaceuticals in the environment leads to biota exposure and constitute a potential risk for ecosystems. Bioaccumulation is an essential focus of risk assessment to evaluate at what degree emerging contaminants are a hazard both to the environment and the individuals that inhabit it. The main goals of the present review are 1) to summarize and describe the research and factors that should be taken into account in the evaluation of bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals in aquatic organisms; and 2) to provide a database and a critical review of the bioaccumulation/bioconcentration factors (BAF or BCF) of these compounds in organisms of different trophic levels. Most studies fall into one of two categories: laboratory-scale absorption and purification tests or field studies and, to a lesser extent, large-scale, semi-natural system tests. Although in the last 5 years there has been considerable progress in this field, especially in species of fish and molluscs, research is still limited on other aquatic species like crustaceans or algae. This revision includes >230 bioconcentration factors (BCF) and >530 bioaccumulation factors (BAF), determined for 113 pharmaceuticals. The most commonly studied is the antidepressant group, followed by diclofenac and carbamazepine. There is currently no reported accumulation data on certain compounds, such as anti-cancer drugs. BCFs are highly influenced by experimental factors (notably the exposure level, time or temperature). Field BAFs are superior to laboratory BCFs, highlighting the importance of field studies for reliable assessments and in true environmental conditions. BAF data appears to be organ, species and compound-specific. The potential impact on food web transfer is also considered. Among different aquatic species, lower trophic levels and benthic organisms exhibit relatively higher uptake of these compounds.

Shifts in periphyton research themes over the past three decades

It has been well documented that periphyton communities play a key role in primary productivity, nutrient cycling, and food web interactions. However, a worldwide overview of research on the key themes, current situation, and major trends within the field is lacking. In this study, we applied the machine learning technique (latent Dirichlet allocation, LDA) to analyze the abstracts of 6690 publications related to periphyton from 1991 to 2020 based on the Web of Science database. The relative frequency of classical and basic research on periphyton related to colonization, biomass, growth rate, and habitats has been clearly decreasing. The increasing trends of research on periphyton are embodied in the periphyton function in freshwater ecosystems (e.g., application as ecological indicators, function in the removal of nutrients, and application in paleolimnology), the research at macroscales (e.g., spatial-temporal variation, and functional and taxonomic diversity), and the anthropogenic themes (e.g., climate warming, response to multiple stressors, and land use type). The keyword and title analysis showed that the periphyton studies are concentrated mainly on diatom aspects, especially with respect to streams relative to lakes. The thematic space based on non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) showed that the classical themes such as growth rate, colonization, and environmental factors (e.g., multiple stressors and climate warming) were most linked to other research themes. We proposed that future trends in the periphyton should focus on the function of periphyton in lakes and their response to multiple environmental pressures with the increasingly extensive eutrophication in lakes and the increasingly significant change in the climate.

The Relationship between Typical Environmental Endocrine Disruptors and Kidney Disease

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous substances that alter the endocrine function of an organism, to result in adverse effects on growth and development, metabolism, and reproductive function. The kidney is one of the most important organs in the urinary system and an accumulation point. Studies have shown that EDCs can cause proteinuria, affect glomeruli and renal tubules, and even lead to diabetes and renal fibrosis in animal and human studies. In this review, we discuss renal accumulation of select EDCs such as dioxins, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), bisphenol A (BPA), and phthalates, and delineate how exposures to such EDCs cause renal lesions and diseases, including cancer. The regulation of typical EDCs with specific target genes and the activation of related pathways are summarized.

A holistic assessment of the sources, prevalence, and distribution of bisphenol A and analogues in water, sediments, biota and plastic litter of the Ebro Delta (Spain)

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the main ubiquitous compounds released from plastics in the environment. This compound, considered an endocrine disruptor, poses a risk to aquatic wildlife and human population, being included in multiple environmental monitoring programmes. Following the regulations restricting BPA use in the last years, BPA-like chemicals have been produced and used as BPA substitutes. However, they are not commonly included in monitoring programs yet and their presence is thus misrepresented, despite showing similar endocrine disrupting potential. In this work, an analytical method for analysing bisphenol A and five of its analogues (Bisphenol S, B, F, AF and Tetrabromobisphenol A) is described, validated for water (riverine, sea and wastewater), sediment, and biota (fish and biofilm) and applied to monitor their presence in the Ebro River Delta (NE Spain). In addition, plastic litter was also collected to evaluate their role as potential source of bisphenols. All compounds except BPF were detected in the analysed samples. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were discarded as major sources of BPs into the natural aquatic environment, as no BPs were detected in treated effluents. Indeed, the high levels of BPs in the natural environment could be related with direct discharge of raw wastewater from small rural population nucleus. The analysis of riverine plastic leachates yielded 4 out of the 6 BPs analysed, strengthening the hypothesis that plastic debris are also a source of BPs in the natural environment. Whereas Bisphenol S and BPA were detected in water and, to a limited extent, in biota, less polar analogues (mainly BPAF and TBBPA) were not found in any of the water samples. Instead, these hydrophobic BPs were found in fish tissues and biofilm, pointing out plastics and microplastics as their possible vectors. Finally, biofilm demonstrated its potential as sentinel of chemical contamination in freshwater environment.

Updated knowledge, partitioning and ecological risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in global aquatic environments

Over the last few decades, the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments has generated increasing public concern. In this review, data on the presence of PPCPs in environmental compartments from the past few years (2014-2022) are summarized by carrying out a critical survey of the partitioning among water, sediment, and aquatic organisms. From the available articles on PPCP occurrence in the environment, in Web of Science and Scopus databases, 185 articles were evaluated. Diclofenac, carbamazepine, caffeine, ibuprofen, ciprofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole were reported to occur in 85% of the studies in at least one of the mentioned matrices. Risk assessment showed a moderate to high environmental risk for these compounds worldwide. Moreover, bioconcentration factors showed that sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim can bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms, while ciprofloxacin and triclosan present bioaccumulation potential. Regarding spatial distribution, the Asian and European continents presented most studies on the occurrence and effects of PPCPs on the environment, while Africa and Asia are the most contaminated continents. In addition, the impact of COVID-19 on environmental contamination by PPCPs is discussed.

An Overview of Analytical Methods to Determine Pharmaceutical Active Compounds in Aquatic Organisms

There is increasing scientific evidence that some pharmaceuticals are present in the marine ecosystems at concentrations that may cause adverse effects on the organisms that inhabit them. At present, there is still very little scientific literature on the (bio)accumulation of these compounds in different species, let alone on the relationship between the presence of these compounds and the adverse effects they produce. However, attempts have been made to optimize and validate analytical methods for the determination of residues of pharmaceuticals in marine biota by studying the stages of sample treatment, sample clean-up and subsequent analysis. The proposed bibliographic review includes a summary of the most commonly techniques, and its analytical features, proposed to determine pharmaceutical compounds in aquatic organisms at different levels of the trophic chain in the last 10 years.

Effects of the agricultural pollutant 17β-trenbolone on morphology and behaviour of tadpoles (Limnodynastes tasmaniensis)

Pollutants, such as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), are increasingly being detected in organisms and ecosystems globally. Agricultural activities, including the use of hormonal growth promotants (HGPs), are a major source of EDC contamination. One potent EDC that enters into the environment through the use of HGPs is 17β-trenbolone. Despite EDCs being repeatedly shown to affect reproduction and development, comparatively little is known regarding their effects on behaviour. Amphibians, one of the most imperilled vertebrate taxa globally, are at particular risk of exposure to such pollutants as they often live and breed near agricultural operations. Yet, no previous research on amphibians has explored the effects of 17β-trenbolone exposure on foraging or antipredator behaviour, both of which are key fitness-related behavioural traits. Accordingly, we investigated the impacts of 28-day exposure to two environmentally realistic concentrations of 17β-trenbolone (average measured concentrations: 10 and 66 ng/L) on the behaviour and growth of spotted marsh frog tadpoles (Limnodynastes tasmaniensis). Contrary to our predictions, there was no significant effect of 17β-trenbolone exposure on tadpole growth, antipredator response, anxiety-like behaviour, or foraging. We hypothesise that the differences in effects found between this study and those conducted on fish may be due to taxonomic differences and/or the life stage of the animals used, and suggest further research is needed to investigate the potential for delayed manifestation of the effects of 17β-trenbolone exposure.

Invertebrates differentially bioaccumulate pharmaceuticals: Implications for routine biomonitoring

Surface water quality monitoring programs have been developed to examine traditional contaminants, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). However, urbanization, which is increasing around the world, is increasing discharge of treated wastewater and raw sewage in many regions. Pharmaceuticals and their metabolites represent typical markers of such trajectories in urbanization. We selected an ongoing monitoring program, which was designed for routine surveillance of nonionizable POPs in different aquatic matrices, to examine the occurrence of 67 pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in water and multiple bioindicator matrices: benthic invertebrates, juvenile fish, and adult fish (plasma and muscle tissue) from ten river systems with varying levels of watershed development. In addition, we placed zebra mussels and passive samplers in situ for a fixed period. A statistically significant relationship between pharmaceutical levels in passive samplers and biota was found for caged zebra mussels and benthic invertebrates, while only a few pharmaceuticals were identified in fish matrices. Invertebrates, which have received relatively limited study for pharmaceutical bioaccumulation, accumulated more pharmaceuticals than fish, up to thirty different substances. The highest concentration was observed for sertraline in zebra mussels and telmisartan in benthic invertebrates (83 and 31 ng/g ww, respectively). Our results across diverse study systems indicate that ongoing surface water quality monitoring programs, which were originally designed for traditional organic pollutants, need to be revised to account for bioaccumulation dynamics of pharmaceuticals and other ionizable contaminants. Aquatic monitoring programs routinely examine accumulation of nonionizable organic pollutants; however, we identified that these efforts need to be revised to account for bioaccumulation of ionizable contaminants, which reached higher levels in invertebrates than in fish.

Bioaccumulation and bioamplification of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors in aquatic insects

Environmental fate of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds at the aquatic terrestrial boundary are largely unexplored. Aquatic insects connect aquatic and terrestrial food webs as their life cycle includes aquatic and terrestrial life stages, thus they represent an important inter-habitat linkage not only for energy and nutrient flow, but also for contaminant transfer to terrestrial environments. We measured the concentrations of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds in the larval and adult tissues (last larval stages and teneral adults) of five Odonata species sampled in a wastewater-impacted river, in order to examine their bioaccumulation and bioamplification at different taxonomic levels. Twenty different compounds were bioaccumulated in insect tissues, with majority having higher concentrations (up to 90% higher) in aquatic larvae compared to terrestrial adults (reaching 88 ng/g for 1H-benzotriazole). However, increased concentration in adults was observed for seven compounds in at least one suborder (41% of the accumulated), confirming contaminants bioamplification across the metamorphosis. Both, bioaccumulation and bioamplification differed at various taxa levels; the order (Odonata), suborder (Anisoptera and Zygoptera) and species level. Highest variability was observed between Anisoptera and Zygoptera, due to the underlying differences in their ecology. Generally, Zygoptera had higher concentrations of contaminants in both larvae and adults. Additionally, we aimed at predicting effects of contaminant properties on bioaccumulation and bioamplification patterns using the commonly used physicochemical and pharmacokinetic descriptors on both order and suborder levels, however, neither of the two processes could be consistently predicted with simple linear models. Our study highlights the importance of taxonomy in studies aiming at advancing the understanding of contaminant exchange between aquatic and terrestrial food webs, as higher taxonomic categories include ecologically diverse groups, whose contribution to "the dark side of subsidies" could substantially differ.

Reclaimed wastewater reuse in irrigation: Role of biofilms in the fate of antibiotics and spread of antimicrobial resistance

Reclaimed wastewater associated biofilms are made up from diverse class of microbial communities that are continuously exposed to antibiotic residues. The presence of antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) and their associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) ensures also a continuous selection pressure on biofilms that could be seen as hotspots for antibiotic resistance dissemination but can also play a role in antibiotic degradation. In this study, the antibiotic degradation and the abundance of four ARGs (qnrS, sul1, blaTEM, ermB), and two mobile genetic elements (MGEs) including IS613 and intl1, were followed in reclaimed wastewater and biofilm samples collected at the beginning and after 2 weeks of six antibiotics exposure (10 µg L^-1). Antibiotics were partially degraded and remained above lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for environmental samples described in the literature. The most abundant genes detected both in biofilms and reclaimed wastewater were sul1, ermB, and intl1. The relative abundance of these genes in biofilms increased during the 2 weeks of exposure but the highest values were found in control samples (without antibiotics pressure), suggesting that bacterial community composition and diversity are the driven forces for resistance selection and propagation in biofilms, rather than exposure to antibiotics. Planktonic and biofilm bacterial communities were characterized. Planktonic cells are classically defined "as free flowing bacteria in suspension" as opposed to the sessile state (the so-called biofilm): "a structured community of bacterial cells enclosed in a self-produced polymeric matrix and adherent to an inert or living. surface" as stated by Costerton et al. (1999). The abundance of some genera known to harbor ARG such as Streptococcus, Exiguobacterium, Acholeplasma, Methylophylaceae and Porphyromonadaceae increased in reclaimed wastewater containing antibiotics. The presence of biofilm lowered the level of these genera in wastewater but, at the opposite, could also serve as a reservoir of these bacteria to re-colonize low-diversity wastewater. It seems that maintaining a high diversity is important to limit the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance among planktonic bacteria. Antibiotics had no influence on the biofilm development monitored with optical coherence tomography (OCT). Further research is needed in order to clarify the role of inter-species communication in biofilm on antibiotic degradation and resistance development and spreading.

Pharmaceutical and personal care products as emerging environmental contaminants in Nigeria: A systematic review

The increasingly broad and massive use of pharmaceuticals (human, veterinary) and personal care products in industrially developing nations makes their uncontrolled environmental and ecological impact a true concern. Focusing on Nigeria, this systematic literature search (databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane library and African Journals Online) aims to increase visibility to the issue. Among 275 articles identified, 7 were included in this systematic review. Studies indicated the presence of 11 personal care products (15.94 %) and 58 pharmaceutical products (84.06 %) in surface and ground water, leachates, runoffs, sludge, and sediments. The 42.86% (3/7) of reviewed studies reported 17 analgesics; 71.42 % (5/7) reported 16 antibiotics; 28.57 % (2/7) reported 5 lipid lowering drugs; 28.57% reported anti-malaria and fungal drugs; 14.29 % (1/7) reported estrogen drugs. Different studies report on sunscreen products, hormone, phytosterol, insect repellent, and β1 receptor. Gemfibrozil (<4-730 ng/L), Triclosan (55.1-297.7 ng/L), Triclocarban (35.6-232.4 ng/L), Trimethoprim (<1-388 ng/L) and Tramadol (<2-883 ng/L) had the highest range of concentrations. Findings confirm the need of i) legislation for environmental monitoring, including biota, ii) toxicological profiling of new market products, and iii) sensitization on appropriate use and disposal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products.

Occurrence and accumulation of pharmaceutical products in water and biota of urban lowland rivers

We evaluated the distribution of eleven groups of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in surface waters and biota of different trophic levels, in five sites of two lowland urban rivers in Argentine. Twenty-nine out of 39 PhACs and two metabolites were detected in at least one water sample (2-9622 ng/L), eleven detected in biofilms (1-179 ng/g d.w_.) and eight in the macrophyte Lemna gibba (4-112 ng/g d.w). The two more polluted sites had a similar distribution of the main groups of compounds. In surface waters, the largest concentrations were for the analgesic acetaminophen (9622 ng/L), the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (326 ng/L), the antihypertensive valsartan (963 ng/L), the β-blocking agent atenolol (427 ng/L), the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (445 ng/L) and the psychiatric drug carbamazepine (99 ng/L). The antibiotic ciprofloxacin exhibited the highest concentration in the biofilm (179 ng/g d.w_.) and in the macrophyte L. gibba (112 ng/g d.w_.) Several compounds were detected in the water but not in the biota (e.g., codeine and bezafibrate), and others (e.g., azithromycin and citalopram) were found in the biota but not in the surface water. Significant bioaccumulation factors (>1000 L/kg d.w.) were obtained for venlafaxine and ciprofloxacin in biofilm. Our results show that PhACs may accumulate in several biological compartments. Within an environmental compartment, similar PhACs profile and concentrations were found in different sites receiving urban pollution. Among different compartments, biofilms may be the most suitable biota matrix to monitor the immediate reception of PhACs in the biota. Our results indicate that the presence of PhACs in urban rivers and their accumulation in the biota could be incorporated as symptoms of the urban stream syndrome.

Efficient Removal of Nonylphenol Isomers from Water by Use of Organo-Hydrotalcites

The presence of potent organic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in natural aquifers can have adverse impacts on public health and the environment. 4-nonylphenol, one such EDC, can be efficiently removed from water by adsorption onto a clayey material. In this work, we created an effective sorbent for this purpose by using co-precipitation and subsequent ion-exchange to intercalate the organic anion deoxycholate into a Mg/Al hydrotalcite. Intercalating deoxycholate ions increased the organophilicity of the hydrotalcite surface. The solid was used to adsorb 4-nonylphenol at different pollutant concentrations and temperatures. The adsorption process was subjected to a kinetic study. Based on the results, the EDC was adsorbed by chemisorption. In addition, based on the equilibrium isotherms used for the process, the Freundlich model was the most accurate in reproducing the adsorption of 4-nonylphenol onto deoxycholate-intercalated hydrotalcite.

Ultrasound-assisted extraction as an easy-to-perform analytical methodology for monitoring ibuprofen and its main metabolites in mussels

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been reported to be the main pharmaceutical class accumulated in seafood. Among them, ibuprofen (IBU) is of special concern as it is used worldwide to treat common pain, does not require a medical prescription, it is often taken in a high daily dose, and has been reported to cause potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms. IBU is highly transformed into hydroxy- and carboxy-metabolites and/or degradation products generated not only after its administration but also during wastewater treatment or in the environment. These compounds can be present in the environment at higher concentrations than IBU and present higher toxicity. In this work, a low-cost and affordable routine analytical method was developed and validated for the first-time determination of IBU and its main metabolites in mussels. The method is based on ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), clean-up by dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) and analytical determination by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Box-Behnken experimental design was used for method optimisation to better evaluate the influence and interactions of UAE and d-SPE variables. Extraction recoveries were in the range from 81 to 115%. Precision, expressed as relative standard deviation, was lower than 7%. Method detection limits were in the range from 0.1 to 1.9 ng g⁻¹ dry weight. The method was successfully applied to wild mussels.

Assessing the exposure to human and veterinary pharmaceuticals in waterbirds: The use of feathers for monitoring antidepressants and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from both human and veterinary sources is an increasing threat to wildlife welfare and conservation. Notwithstanding, tracking the exposure to pharmaceuticals in non-target and sensitive vertebrates, including birds, is seldom performed and relies almost exclusively on analysing internal organs retrieved from carcasses or from experimentally exposed and sacrificed birds. Clearly, this excludes the possibility of performing large-scale monitoring. Analysing feathers collected from healthy birds may permit this, by detecting APIs in wild birds, including protected and declining species of waterbirds, without affecting their welfare. To this end, we set up a non-destructive method for analysing the presence of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) in the feathers of fledglings of both the Mediterranean gull (Ichtyaetus melanocephalus) and the Sandwich tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis). The presence of several NSAIDs and SSRIs above the method quantification limits have confirmed that feathers might be a suitable means of evaluating the exposure of birds to APIs. Moreover, the concentrations indicated that waterbirds are exposed to NSAIDs, such as diclofenac, ibuprofen and naproxen, and SSRIs, such as citalopram, desmethylcitalopram, fluvoxamine and sertraline, possibly due to their widespread use and incomplete removal in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The active ingredient diclofenac raises a the primary concern for the ecosystem and the welfare of the waterbirds, due to its high prevalence (100% and 83.3% in Mediterranean gull and Sandwich tern, respectively), its concentrations detected in feathers (11.9 ng g^-1 and 6.7 ng g^-1 in Mediterranean gull and Sandwich tern, respectively), and its documented toxicity toward certain birds.

Bioavailability and trophic magnification of antibiotics in aquatic food webs of Pearl River, China: Influence of physicochemical characteristics and biotransformation

Information on trophodynamics of antibiotics and subsequent relationships to antibiotic metabolism in river ecosystem is still unavailable, limiting the evaluation of their bioaccumulation and trophodynamics in aquatic food webs. In the present study, concentrations and relative abundance of 11 antibiotics were investigated in surface water, sediment and 22 aquatic taxa (e.g., fish, invertebrates and plankton) from Pearl River, South China. The logarithmic bioaccumulation factors (log BAFs) of antibiotics generally showed positive relationships with their log D (pH-adjusted log Kow), implying that their bioaccumulation of ionizable antibiotics depends on it is in an ionized form. Higher BAFs of antibiotics in benthic biota were observed than those in fish, indicating that sediment ingestion was a possible route of antibiotic exposure. The logarithmic biota-sediment accumulation factors (log BSAFs) of benthic biota increased when log D increased from -4.79 to -0.01, but declined thereafter. Trophodynamics of antibiotics was investigated, and intrinsic clearance were measured in liver microsomes of Tilapia zillii (trophic level [TL]: 2.5), Anabas testudineu (TL: 3.9), and Coilia grayi (TL: 5.0). Only ciprofloxacin (CFX) showed significant trophic magnification (Trophic Magnification Factor [TMF] = 1.95), and a higher metabolism rate in lower trophic levels suggest that metabolic biotransformation play a significant role in driving biomagnification of antibiotics.

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Marine Environment Around False Bay, Cape Town, South Africa: Occurrence and Risk-Assessment Study

Pollution of the marine environment has been increasing as a result of anthropogenic activities. The preservation of marine ecosystems as well as the safety of harvested seafood are nowadays a global concern. In the present study, levels of pharmaceuticals and personal care products were assessed in different environmental compartments in the near-shore marine environment of False Bay, Cape Town, South Africa. The study revealed the presence of these persistent chemical compounds in different environmental samples from this location. Diclofenac was the most dominant compound detected, with higher concentration than the other pharmaceutical compounds, as well as being present in almost all the samples from the different sites (seawater, 3.70-4.18 ng/L; sediment, 92.08-171.89 ng/g dry wt; marine invertebrates, 67.67-780.26 ng/g dry wt; seaweed, 101.50-309.11 ng/g dry wt). The accumulation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the different species of organisms reflects the increasing anthropogenic pressure taking place at the sampling sites along the bay, as a result of population growth, resident lifestyle as well as poorly treated sewage effluent discharge from several associated wastewater-treatment plants. The concentration of these contaminants is in the order marine biota > sediments > seawater. The contaminants pose a low acute and chronic risk to the selected trophic levels. A public awareness campaign is needed to reduce the pollution at the source, as well as wastewater discharge limits need to be more stringent. Environ Toxicol Chem 2022;41:614-634. © 2021 SETAC.

Presence of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in wild-living aquatic organisms - Current state of knowledge

In the last decades an increasing number of studies has been published concerning contamination of aquatic ecosystems with pharmaceuticals. Yet, the distribution of these chemical compounds in aquatic environments raises many questions and uncertainties. Data on the presence of selected pharmaceuticals in the same water bodies varies significantly between different studies. Therefore, since early 1990 s, wild organisms have been used in research on environmental contamination with pharmaceuticals. Indeed, pharmaceutical levels measured in biological matrices may better reflect their overall presence in the aquatic environments as such levels include not only direct exposure of a given organisms to a specific pollutant but also processes such as bioaccumulation and biomagnification. In the present paper, data concerning occurrence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic biota was reviewed. So far, pharmaceuticals have been studied mainly in fish and molluscs, with only a few papers available on crustaceans and macroalgae. The most commonly found pharmaceuticals both in freshwater and marine organisms are antibiotics, antidepressants and NSAIDS while there is no information about the presence of anticancer drugs in aquatic organisms. Furthermore, only single studies were conducted in Africa and Australia. Hence, systematization of up-to-date knowledge, the main aim of this review, is needed for further research targeting.

Characterization of the contamination fingerprint of wastewater treatment plant effluents in the Henares River Basin (central Spain) based on target and suspect screening analysis

The interest in contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) has increased lately due to their continued emission and potential ecotoxicological hazards. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are generally not capable of eliminating them and are considered the main pathway for CECs to the aquatic environment. The number of CECs in WWTPs effluents is often so large that complementary approaches to the conventional target analysis need to be implemented. Within this context, multitarget quantitative analysis (162 compounds) and a suspect screening (>40,000 suspects) approaches were applied to characterize the CEC fingerprint in effluents of five WWTPs in the Henares River basin (central Spain) during two sampling campaigns (summer and autumn). The results indicated that 76% of the compounds quantified corresponded to pharmaceuticals, 21% to pesticides and 3% to industrial chemicals. Apart from the 82 compounds quantified, suspect screening increased the list to 297 annotated compounds. Significant differences in the CEC fingerprint were observed between summer and autumn campaigns and between the WWTPs, being those serving the city of Alcalá de Henares the ones with the largest number of compounds and concentrations. Finally, a risk prioritization approach was applied based on risk quotients (RQs) for algae, invertebrates, and fish. Azithromycin, diuron, chlortoluron, clarithromycin, sertraline and sulfamethoxazole were identified as having the largest risks to algae. As for invertebrates, the compounds having the largest RQs were carbendazim, fenoxycarb and eprosartan, and for fish acetaminophen, DEET, carbendazim, caffeine, fluconazole, and azithromycin. The two WWTPs showing higher calculated Risk Indexes had tertiary treatments, which points towards the need of increasing the removal efficiency in urban WWTPs. Furthermore, considering the complex mixtures emitted into the environment and the low dilution capacity of Mediterranean rivers, we recommend the development of detailed monitoring plans and stricter regulations to control the chemical burden created to freshwater ecosystems.

Assessment of a wide array of organic micropollutants of emerging concern in wastewater treatment plants in Greece: Occurrence, removals, mass loading and potential risks

Exploring the contamination profile of multi-class emerging contaminants (ECs) in wastewater is highly desirable. To this end, the occurrence, removal, mass loading and risks associated with a large panel of pharmaceuticals and personal care products, illicit drugs, perfluorinated compounds and organophosphate flame retardants in two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the region of Thessaloniki (Greece) after a survey is illustrated. Influent and effluent wastewaters were submitted to solid phase extraction on Oasis HLB cartridges, followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Orbitrap MS). Influent concentrations in both WWTPs were notably higher than effluent, with caffeine, acetaminophen, irbesartan and valsartan being the most ubiquitous compounds, exhibiting elevated concentrations. Average effluent concentrations ranged from below the method quantification limits (<MQL) to remarkably high values (μg L^-1 scale), such as for caffeine, acetaminophen, diclofenac, irbesartan and valsartan, among others. Removal efficiencies ranged between -273% for lamotrigine and 100%, i.e., for the UV filter BP1. Notably, the polar compounds such as cytarabine, methotrexate and capecitabine were removed at a rate >80% in both WWTPs, allowing the correlation between logK_ow and removals. Interesting trends for the illicit drugs were revealed by means of mass loading estimation, as in the case of benzoylecgonine (71.6 mg/day/1000 inhabitants). Ecotoxicological risk assessment was evaluated for both single components and mixture, using three approaches: risk quotient (RQ), risk quotient considering frequency (RQ_f) and toxic units (TU). Irbesartan and telmisartan posed a high risk in all trophic levels, while fish was the most sensitive taxa for diclofenac. This work aspires to intensify the surveillance programs for the receiving water bodies, as well as to motivate the investigation of toxicity to non-target organisms.

Antibiotic residues in wastewaters from sewage treatment plants and pharmaceutical industries: Occurrence, removal and environmental impacts

Sewage treatment plants (STPs) and pharmaceutical manufactories (PMFs) are recognized as important reservoirs for aquatic pollution with antibiotics. Although the occurrence of multiple classes of antibiotics has been mostly reported for STPs and PMFs, knowledge on the effects of wastewater treatment processes on the removal of antibiotics is not well documented. In this study, wastewaters were collected from different treatment points of two STPs and two PMFs in eastern China. Thirty-seven antibiotics within the four classes of fluoroquinolones (FQs), macrolides (MACs), sulfonamides (SAs) and tetracyclines (TCs) were analyzed. Among the investigated antibiotics, 19-33 out of 37 target compounds were detected at least once in the STPs wastewaters ranging from low ng/L to approximately 12.7 μ/L. In the wastewater samples collected from PMFs, up to 34 antibiotics were present with detection frequencies up to 100%, showing generally higher concentrations (up to 19.0 μ/L) than those at the STPs. FQs and SAs were the dominant antibiotic families, which accounted for more than 90% of the total antibiotic concentration in the wastewaters. Moreover, the removal of antibiotics by anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A²O), membrane bioreactor (MBR) and conventional activated sludge (CAS) systems was evaluated. The MBR system exhibited the best performance, mainly due to the processes of biodegradation and sorption during biological treatments. Notably, several SAs (SMP, SMZ) and FQs (CIN, ENO) antibiotics were consistently detected at concentration levels of μ/L in the effluent samples. The culturable antibiotic-resistance tests and risk assessment indicated that the antibiotic-contaminated effluents would facilitate the development of resistant bacteria and pose high toxicity to non-target organisms in the aquatic environment. Overall, the findings suggested an urgent need for improving the wastewater treatment technologies for simultaneous removal of different classes of antibiotics.

Using the Tea Bag Index to determine how two human pharmaceuticals affect litter decomposition by aquatic microorganisms

This study demonstrates that independent additive effects of two human pharmaceuticals, the antibiotic trimethoprim and the artificial estrogen 17a-Ethinylestradiol (EE2), inhibit plant litter decomposition by aquatic microorganisms. The constant release of pharmaceuticals, such as these, has the potential to affect aquatic microbial metabolism and alter biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients. Here we advance the Tea Bag Index (TBI) for decomposition by using it in a series of contaminant exposure experiments testing how interactions between trimethoprim and EE2 affect aquatic microbial activity. The TBI is a citizen science tool used to test microbial activity by measuring the differential degradation of green and rooibos tea as proxies for respectively labile and recalcitrant litter decomposition. Exposure to either trimethoprim or EE2 decreased decomposition of green tea, suggesting additive effects upon microbial activity. Exposure to EE2 alone decreased rooibos tea decomposition. Consequently, trimethoprim and EE2 stabilized labile organic matter against microbial degradation and restricted decomposition. We propose that the method outlined could provide a powerful tool for testing the impacts of multiple interacting pollutants upon microbial activity, at a range of scales, across aquatic systems and over ecologically relevant time scales.

A guideline to frame stressor effects in freshwater ecosystems

Environmental policies fall short in protecting freshwater ecosystems, which are heavily threatened by human pressures and their associated stressors. One reason is that stressor effects depend on the context in which they occur and it is difficult to extrapolate patterns to predict the effect of stressors without these being contextualized in a general frame. This study aims at improving existing decision-making frameworks such as the DPSIR approach (Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response) or ERA (Environmental Risk Assessment) in the context of stressors. Here, we delve into stressor-impact relationships in freshwater ecosystems and develop a guideline which includes key characteristics such as stressor type, stressor duration, location, the natural levels of environmental variables to which each ecosystem is used to, among others. This guideline is intended to be useful in a wide range of ecosystem conditions and stressors. Incorporating these guidelines may favor the comparability of scientific results and may lead to a substantial advancement in the efficacy of diagnosis and predictive approaches of impacts.

Aluminum at environmental concentrations affects the sperm quality of the freshwater teleost Astyanax altiparanae: An in vitro study

Aluminum (Al) is present in rivers and reservoirs in concentrations above that is allowed by regulatory agencies (e.g. 0.5 mg L^-1 Al), which can impair fish reproduction. The present study evaluated the in vitro effects on the sperm of Astyanax altiparanae upon Al exposure at different concentrations (0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 mg L^-1) with various exposure periods (50 s, 10 min, and 30 min). The following biomarkers were evaluated: membrane vitality, DNA fragmentation, morphology, kinetics (10 s and 30 s after sperm activation), and sperm mitochondrial activity. Al damages the membrane vitality of gametes at 0.3 and 0.5 mg L^-1 after 50 s of exposure. After 30 min of exposure, there was a decrease in membrane vitality at 0.1 and 0.5 mg L^-1, and the membrane vitality decreased with increased exposure time. Within 30 s after sperm activation, Al (0.3 and 0.5 mg L^-1) reduced sperm motility by more than 50% at the longest exposure time, while at 0.1 and 0.5 mg L^-1, Al exposure reduced motility over time. The average path speed (VAP; 10 s post-sperm activation) was reduced at longer exposure times at 0.05 and 0.5 mg L^-1 of Al. Increased exposure time had deleterious effects on mitochondrial activity at the highest concentrations tested. Al did not damage DNA and sperm morphology. In conclusion, Al negatively influences the sperm quality of A. altiparanae with a potential effect of exposure time and increasing concentrations.

Caffeine as a contaminant of periphyton: ecological changes and impacts on primary producers

Every day, tons of caffeine is consumed by humans in beverages, medications or supplements, and a significant amount of this stimulant is released in domestic sewage. Once in aquatic environments caffeine interacts directly with the periphytic community, which is responsible for a significant part of primary production in aquatic ecosystems. However, the effects of exposure to caffeine are mostly unknown for both the periphyton and their predators. Aiming to comprehend the interaction between caffeine and the periphytic community, ecotoxicological experiments were performed by exposing a periphytic biofilm cultivated in the laboratory to different concentrations of caffeine, following concentrations found in domestic sewers. The impact of exposure to this contaminant was observed on the structure of the community through taxonomic evaluation, as well a set of physiological variables linked to primary production. After exposure to the highest caffeine concentration (300 µg L^-1), the density of the genus Scenedesmus was severely affected, leading to an increase in cyanobacteria and diatoms. Both richness and diversity decreased after exposure, and there was lower photosynthetic activity, with light saturation point changing from 186 µmol m^-2 s^-1 in the control treatment to 108 µmol m^-2 s^-1 after exposure. Caffeine accumulation within the biofilm was also observed during the first 24 h, in the concentration of 0.14 µg /cm².

Aquatic Insects Transfer Pharmaceuticals and Endocrine Disruptors from Aquatic to Terrestrial Ecosystems

A wide range of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds enter freshwaters globally. As these contaminants are transported through aquatic food webs, understanding their impacts on both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems remains a major challenge. Here, we provide the first direct evidence of the transfer of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors through the aquatic-terrestrial habitat linkage by emerging aquatic insects. We also show that the type of insect metamorphosis and feeding behavior determine the bioaccumulation patterns of these contaminants. Adult Trichoptera, an important food source for riparian predators, showed an increased body burden of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors. This implies that terrestrial predators, such as spiders, birds, and bats, are exposed to mixtures of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors of aquatic origin, which may impact their physiology and population dynamics. Overall, our study provides valuable insights into the bioaccumulation patterns and trophic cross-ecosystem transfer of these contaminants, from aquatic primary producers to terrestrial predators.

Morbidity and mortality in Danio rerio and Pimephales promelas exposed to antilipidemic drug mixtures (fibrates and statins) during embryogenesis: Comprehensive assessment via ante and post mortem endpoints

Antilipidemic drugs are routinely detected in effluent and surface waters downstream of wastewater treatment plants. A mixture exposure study with nine environmentally relevant antilipidemic drugs was performed with zebrafish (Danio rerio, ZF) and fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas, FHM) embryos to investigate the effects on sensitive embryologic stages. Zebrafish embryos were exposed nominally to: (a) 0.005 μM, (b) 0.05 μM, or (c) 0.5 μM of each drug in the mixture. Fathead minnow embryos were exposed nominally to: (a) 0.0005 μM, (b) 0.005 μM, or (c) 0.05 μM of each drug in the mixture. Several of the individual drug concentrations were within ranges previously found in the environment. Multiple metrics demonstrate that (a) exposure of ZF and FHM embryos to antilipidemic drugs during embryonic development results in lethal and sublethal effects, (b) ZF were more sensitive than FHM based on median lethal concentration (LC₅₀ 0.02 μM and 0.05 μM, respectively), but FHM exhibited more severe abnormal sublethal morphologies than zebrafish embryos, and (c) the sublethal effects differed between the two species. This model identified novel specific endpoints for assessing sensitive, sublethal effects of pharmaceuticals in the environment. Abnormal myofiber birefringence pattern, hemorrhage, and heart rate are not included in standard evaluations but each of these metrics demonstrated a dose-dependent response in this study. Results demonstrate risk to fish development with potential repercussions at the population level, especially if environmental concentrations increase.

Role of Biofilms in Contaminant Bioaccumulation and Trophic Transfer in Aquatic Ecosystems: Current State of Knowledge and Future Challenges

In freshwater environments, microbial assemblages attached to submerged substrates play an essential role in ecosystem processes such as primary production, supported by periphyton, or organic matter decomposition, supported by microbial communities attached to leaf litter or sediments. These microbial assemblages, also called biofilms, are not only involved in nutrients fluxes but also in contaminants dynamics. Biofilms can accumulate metals and organic contaminants transported by the water flow and/or adsorbed onto substrates. Furthermore, due to their high metabolic activity and their role in aquatic food webs, microbial biofilms are also likely to influence contaminant fate in aquatic ecosystems. In this review, we provide (1) a critical overview of the analytical methods currently in use for detecting and quantifying metals and organic micropollutants in microbial biofilms attached to benthic substrata (rocks, sediments, leaf litter); (2) a review of the distribution of those contaminants within aquatic biofilms and the role of these benthic microbial communities in contaminant fate; (3) a set of future challenges concerning the role of biofilms in contaminant accumulation and trophic transfers in the aquatic food web. This literature review highlighted that most knowledge on the interaction between biofilm and contaminants is focused on contaminants dynamics in periphyton while technical limitations are still preventing a thorough estimation of contaminants accumulation in biofilms attached to leaf litter or sediments. In addition, microbial biofilms represent an important food resource in freshwater ecosystems, yet their role in dietary contaminant exposure has been neglected for a long time, and the importance of biofilms in trophic transfer of contaminants is still understudied.

Threat and sustainable technological solution for antineoplastic drugs pollution: Review on a persisting global issue

In the past 20 years, the discharge of pharmaceuticals and their presence in the aquatic environment have been continuously increasing and this has caused serious public health and environmental concerns. Antineoplastic drugs are used in chemotherapy, in large quantities worldwide, for the treatment of continuously increasing cancer cases. Antineoplastic drugs also contaminate water sources and possess mutagenic, cytostatic and eco-toxicological effects on microorganisms present in the aquatic environment as well as on human health. Due to the recalcitrant nature of antineoplastic drugs, the commonly used wastewater treatment processes are not able to eliminate these drugs. Globally, various anticancer drugs are being consumed during chemotherapy in hospitals and households by out-patients. These anti-cancer agents enter the water bodies in their original form or as metabolites via urine and faeces of the out-patients or the patients admitted in hospitals. Due to its high lipid solubility, the antineoplastic drugs accumulate in the fatty tissues of the organisms. These drugs enter through the food chain and cause adverse health effects on humans due to their cytotoxic and genotoxic properties. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) elucidated new regulations for the management of hazardous pharmaceuticals in the water environment. In this paper, the role of antineoplastic agents as emerging water contaminants, its transfer through the food chain, its eco-toxicological properties and effects, technological solutions and management aspects were reviewed.

Water reuse and aquaculture: Pharmaceutical bioaccumulation by fish during tertiary treatment in a wastewater stabilization pond

With increasing demand for aquaculture products, water reuse is likely to increase for aquaculture operations around the world. Herein, wastewater stabilization ponds (WSP) represents low cost and sustainable treatment technologies to reduce nutrients and various contaminants of emerging concern from effluent. In the present study, we examined bioaccumulation of selected pharmaceuticals from several therapeutic classes by two important fish species in aquaculture with different feeding preferences (Cyprinus carpio and Sander lucioperca) and their common prey to test whether species specific accumulation occurs. Forty and nineteen from 66 selected pharmaceuticals and their metabolites were positively found in water and sediment samples, respectively from the representative WSP. After a six-month study, which corresponds to aquaculture operations, fourteen pharmaceuticals and their metabolites were detected (at a frequency of higher than 50% of samples) in at least one fish tissue collected from the WSP. We observed striking differences for species and organ specific BAFs among study compounds. Though muscle tissues consistently accumulated lower levels of the target analytes, several substances were elevated in brain, liver and kidney tissues (e.g., sertraline) of both species. Low residual concentrations of these target analytes in aquaculture products (fish fillets) suggest WSPs are promising to support the water-food nexus in aquaculture.

Rapid analysis of 65 pharmaceuticals and 7 personal care products in plasma and whole-body tissue samples of fish using acidic extraction, zirconia-coated silica cleanup, and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

The presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic systems has raised concern about their potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Considering the fact that the physiological/biological effects of PPCPs are triggered when their concentrations in the organism exceeds the respective threshold values, it is important to understand the bioconcentration and toxicokinetics of PPCPs in aquatic organisms. In the present study, we developed a convenient analytical method for the determination of 65 pharmaceuticals and 7 personal care products (log K_ow = 0.14-6.04) in plasma and whole-body tissues of fish. The analytical method consists of ultrasound-assisted extraction in methanol/acetonitrile (1:1, v/v,) acidified with acetic acid-ammonium acetate buffer (pH 4), cleanup on a HybridSPE®-Phospholipid cartridge (zirconia-coated silica cartridge), and quantification with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Acceptable accuracy (internal standard-corrected recovery: 70%-120%) and intra- and inter-day precision (coefficient of variation: <15%) were obtained for both plasma and whole-body tissue samples. In addition, low method detection limits were achieved for both plasma (0.0077 to 0.93 ng mL^-1) and whole-body tissue (0.022 to 4.3 ng g ^- 1 wet weight), although the developed method is simple and fast - a batch of 24 samples can be prepared within 6 h, excluding the time for measurement with LC-MS/MS. The developed method was successfully applied to the analysis of PPCPs in plasma and whole-body tissue samples of fish collected in a treated wastewater-dominated stream, for a comprehensive evaluation of their bioconcentration properties. The analytical method developed in the present study is sufficiently accurate, sensitive, and rapid, and thus highly useful for the comprehensive evaluation of PPCP residues in fish and would aid in future exposome and risk assessment.

Simple and rapid analysis of phthalate esters in marine sediment using ultrasound-assisted extraction combined with gas purge microsyringe extraction followed by GC-MS

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are a class of the emerging pollutants that pose a potential environmental threat to marine ecosystems. In this study, a simple analytical method using ultrasound-assisted extraction combined with gas purges microsyringe extraction (GP-MSE) coupled with GC-MS was utilized for the reliable and rapid determination of PAEs in different types of marine sediment. The analytical results showed that the method exhibited excellent reproducibility, linear responses, and detection limits, which verified the suitability of the method for the determination of PAEs in marine sediment. This approach requires minimal reagents, solvents, and sample pretreatment procedures as well as a short analysis time; thus, procedural blanks can be kept to a minimum. This method was demonstrated to be a highly efficient and sensitive quantitative analytical method for the simple detection of PAEs in marine sediment.

The use of epilithic biofilms as bioaccumulators of pesticides and pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments

Biofilms are a consortium of communities of organisms that live in syntrophic relationships and present a higher organization level than that of individual cells. Biofilms dominate microbial life in streams and rivers, enable crucial ecosystem processes, contribute to global biogeochemical flows and represent the main active bacterial life form. Epilithic biofilms are the main biomass found in rivers; their exposure to contaminants can lead to changes in their structure and composition. The composition of these communities is influenced by physicochemical factors, temperature, light and prior exposure to pollutants, among other factors, and it can be used for water quality monitoring purposes. The heterogenous composition of biofilms enables them to accumulate compounds in an integrative manner. Moreover, the availability of several sorption sites and their likely saturation can contribute to bioaccumulation. In aquatic environments, biofilms are also susceptible to the acquisition of antibiotic resistance genes and participate in their dissemination. Anthropic pressure intensification processes continuously expose water resources and, consequently, biofilm communities to different contamination sources. Therefore, the use of biofilms to indicate environmental pollution is reinforced by the progress of studies on the subject. Biofilm communities' response to pollutants in aquatic environments can be mainly influenced by the presence of different organisms, which may change due to community development or age. The current research aims to review studies about biofilm contamination and highlight the importance of biofilm use to better evaluate and maintain the quality of water bodies.

Toxicity of the Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) acetylsalicylic acid, paracetamol, diclofenac, ibuprofen and naproxen towards freshwater invertebrates: A review

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) represent one of the main therapeutic classes of molecules contaminating aquatic ecosystems worldwide. NSAIDs are commonly and extensively used for their analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties to cure pain and inflammation in human and veterinary therapy. After use, NSAIDs are excreted in their native form or as metabolites, entering the aquatic ecosystems. A number of monitoring surveys has detected the presence of different NSAIDs in freshwater ecosystems in the ng/L - μg/L concentration range. Although the concentrations of NSAIDs in surface waters are low, the high biological activity of these molecules may confer them a potential toxicity towards non-target aquatic organisms. The present review aims at summarizing toxicity, in terms of both acute and chronic toxicity, induced by the main NSAIDs detected in surface waters worldwide, namely acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), paracetamol (PCM), diclofenac (DCF), ibuprofen (IBU) and naproxen (NPX), both singularly and in mixture, towards freshwater invertebrates. Invertebrates play a crucial role in ecosystem functioning so that NSAIDs-induced effects may result in hazardous consequences to the whole freshwater trophic chain. Acute toxicity of NSAIDs occurs only at high, unrealistic concentrations, while sub-lethal effects arise also at low, environmentally relevant concentrations of all these drugs. Thus, further studies represent a priority in order to improve the knowledge on NSAID toxicity and mechanism(s) of action in freshwater organisms and to shed light on their real ecological hazard towards freshwater communities.

Diet quality and NSAIDs promote changes in formation of prostaglandins by an aquatic invertebrate

We used the freshwater insect Hydropsyche sp. to investigate the impact of diets lacking arachidonic acid (ARA) and an environmentally relevant mixture of NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Ketoprofen, Diclofenac and Naproxen at a nominal concentration of all compounds together 16.75 μg L^-1) on their metabolism of ARA and prostaglandins (PGs). The organisms were exposed for 16 days to four different treatments: a reference (FF), a diet lacking ARA (O), to NSAIDs in water (FFN) and to the combination of the two factors (ON). Mortality, biomass and bioconcentration of pharmaceuticals were investigated. The ARA and PGs levels in the organisms were monitored by utilising a targeted metabolomics approach. NSAIDs or dietary constraints did not produce significant differences in biomass or mortality of Hydropsyche sp. among treatments. In organisms exposed to NSAIDs, all pharmaceuticals were detected, except for Ketoprofen. Metabolomic approach determined the presence of PGH₂, PGE₁ and PGD₁. Levels of ARA diminished significantly in those organisms in treatment ON. The levels of PGs responded negatively to the absence of ARA in diet: PGH₂ diminished significantly with respect to the reference in treatment O while PGE₁ diminished significantly in treatment ON. Regarding the effects of NSAIDs on ARA metabolism, our results suggest that it was sensitive to NSAIDs, but effects were weak and did not imply a general decrease in the PGs. We confirmed that ARA was the main substrate for the synthesis of PGs in Hydropsyche sp, their absence or poor levels of ARA in diet, produced changes in the PG levels.

Occurrence, spatiotemporal variation, and ecological risk of antibiotics in the water of the semi-enclosed urbanized Jiaozhou Bay in eastern China

The occurrence, temporal variation, and spatial variation of antibiotics in coastal bays and estuaries worldwide are not well documented or understood. Fifteen target antibiotics within the five classes of β-lactams, amphenicols, macrolides, fluoroquinolones, and sulfonamides were measured during the summer and winter in the water of Jiaozhou Bay in China, which is a semi-enclosed urbanized bay. Fourteen antibiotics (excluding tylosin) were detected, thus demonstrating the widespread occurrence of their residues in the bay. The total antibiotic concentration ranged from 71.8 ng L^-1 to 840 ng L^-1 for the estuarine water, which was significantly higher than that for the bay water (38.7-181 ng L^-1). The antibiotic classes in the bay water were dominated by fluoroquinolones and β-lactams, which accounted for nearly 90% of the total antibiotic concentration. In addition, amoxicillin contamination was the most prominent among the 14 detected antibiotics as it accounted for ~44% of the total antibiotic concentration. The concentrations of amoxicillin, leucomycin, enrofloxacin, and sulfamonomethoxine in the bay water were usually higher than those reported for coastal bays and estuaries worldwide. The average total antibiotic concentration in the bay water was 84.7 ng L^-1 during the summer, which was significantly lower than that during the winter (129.0 ng L^-1). This was mainly due to high dilution by runoff during the summer. The florfenicol concentration in the bay water was significantly higher during the summer than in winter due to its higher usage in aquaculture during the summer. Spatially, the total antibiotic concentration (both summer and winter) was higher in the water along the eastern coast of the bay, where the population and hospital densities are high. However, the sum of the veterinary antibiotic concentrations was higher in the northeastern aquaculture area of the bay during the summer. A risk assessment revealed that amoxicillin and enrofloxacin could pose high risks (risk quotient of > 1) to algae in the bay. The synergic effects of pharmaceutical mixtures and the bioaccumulation of antibiotics through the food web should be considered in future studies.
