Unveiling Innovative Approaches to Mitigate Metals/Metalloids Toxicity for Sustainable Agriculture

Due to anthropogenic activities, environmental pollution of heavy metals/metalloids (HMs) has increased and received growing attention in recent decades. Plants growing in HM-contaminated soils have slower growth and development, resulting in lower agricultural yield. Exposure to HMs leads to the generation of free radicals (oxidative stress), which alters plant morpho-physiological and biochemical pathways at the cellular and tissue levels. Plants have evolved complex defense mechanisms to avoid or tolerate the toxic effects of HMs, including HMs absorption and accumulation in cell organelles, immobilization by forming complexes with organic chelates, extraction via numerous transporters, ion channels, signaling cascades, and transcription elements, among others. Nonetheless, these internal defensive mechanisms are insufficient to overcome HMs toxicity. Therefore, unveiling HMs adaptation and tolerance mechanisms is necessary for sustainable agriculture. Recent breakthroughs in cutting-edge approaches such as phytohormone and gasotransmitters application, nanotechnology, omics, and genetic engineering tools have identified molecular regulators linked to HMs tolerance, which may be applied to generate HMs-tolerant future plants. This review summarizes numerous systems that plants have adapted to resist HMs toxicity, such as physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses. Diverse adaptation strategies have also been comprehensively presented to advance plant resilience to HMs toxicity that could enable sustainable agricultural production.

The interaction between titanium dioxide nanoparticles and light can have dualistic effects on the physiological responses of plants

The model plant Arabidopsis thaliana was exposed to combined stress factors, i.e., titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiNPs) and high light. The concentrations of TiNPs used for irrigation were 250, 500, and 1000 μg/mL. This study shows that TiNPs alter the morphology and nanomechanical properties of chloroplasts in A. thaliana, which leads to a decrease in membrane elasticity. We found that TiNPs contributed to a delay in the thermal response of A. thaliana under dynamic light conditions, as revealed by non-invasive thermal imaging. The thermal time constants of TiNP-treated plants under excessive light are determined, showing a shortening in comparison to control plants. The results indicate that TiNPs may contribute to an alleviation of temperature stress experienced by plants under exposure to high light. In this research, we observed a decline in photosystem II photochemical efficiency accompanied by an increase in energy dissipation upon exposure to TiNPs. Interestingly, concentrations exceeding 250 µg/mL TiNPs appeared to mitigate the effects of high light, as shown by reduced differences in the values of specific OJIP parameters (FV/FM, ABS/RC, DI0/RC, and Pi_Abs) before and after light exposure.

Leaf shape, planting density, and nitrogen application affect soybean yield by changing direct and diffuse light distribution in the canopy

When attempting to maximize the crop yield from field-grown soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) by means of improving the light conditions for photosynthesis in the canopy, it is crucial to find the optimal planting density and nitrogen application rate. The soybean plants that were the subject of our experiment were cultivated in N-dense mutual pairs, and included two cultivars with different leaf shapes; one cultivar sported ovate leaves (O-type) and the other lanceolate leaves (L-type). We analyzed the results quantitatively to determine the amount of spatial variation in light distribution and photosynthetic efficiency across the canopy, and to gauge the effect of the experimental parameters on the yield as well as the photosynthetic light and nitrogen use efficiency of the crop. Results indicate that the different leaf shapes were responsible for significant disparities between the photosynthetic utilization of direct and diffuse light. As the nitrogen fertilizer rate and the planting density increased, the soybean plants responded by adjusting leaf morphology in order to maximize the canopy apparent photosynthetic light use efficiency, which in turn affected the leaf nitrogen distribution in the canopy. Despite the fact that the light interception rate of the canopy of the L-type cultivar was lower than that of the canopy of the O-type cultivar, we found its canopy apparent photosynthetic nitrogen and light use efficiency were higher. It was interesting to note, however, that the nitrogen and light use efficiency contributions associated with exposure to diffuse light were greater for the latter than for the former.

Integrating by-products from bioenergy technology to improve the morpho-physiological growth and yield of soybean under acidic soil

Soil acidity may negatively affect plant growth. By-products (bottom ash (BA), biochar (BC), and biogas slurry (BS)) from bioenergy technology may change the physio-chemical properties of acidic soils and affect the plant growth parameters. The current research work was carried out to determine the impact of different bioenergy by-products to enhance soybean growth and production by alleviating the effects of acidic soil. A total of eight treatments of different bioenergy amendments (BA, BC, and BS) and their combined applications were used as follows; T1 (control), T2 (only biogas slurry); T3 (only bottom ash); T4 (only biochar); T5 (biogas slurry + bottom ash); T6 (biogas slurry + biochar); T7 (bottom ash + biochar); T8 (biochar + bottom ash + biogas slurry). Our results depicted that, the synergistic use of amendment mainly, T8 treatment (BC + BA + BS) was found most effective, which significantly prompted the dry biomass and photosynthetic rate by 42.58% and 13.25% over the T6 treatment respectively. Furthermore, the chlorophyll pigments, photochemical activities, and root growth of soybean plants enhanced significantly under T5 and T8 treatments as compared to the control. Finally, amendments significantly increased the yield in T8 treatment by increasing the pod's number, grain number, 100-grain weight and grain yield by 119.6%, 75%, 24.9%, and 83.7% as compared to T1. Conclusively, amendments are very effective in the reclamation of acidic soil and enhance the post-harvest soil pH at T8 treatment by 41.49% in comparison to T1 treatment. The organic amendments might neutralize the soil pH and change the acidic nature of the soil, which would modify the root growth of soybean and increase the photosynthetic and photochemical activities, resulting in increased soybean growth and yield.

Plants exposed to titanium dioxide nanoparticles acquired contrasting photosynthetic and morphological strategies depending on the growing light intensity: a case study in radish

Due to the photocatalytic property of titanium dioxide (TiO₂), its application may be dependent on the growing light environment. In this study, radish plants were cultivated under four light intensities (75, 150, 300, and 600 μmol m^-2 s^-1 photosynthetic photon flux density, PPFD), and were weekly sprayed (three times in total) with TiO₂ nanoparticles at different concentrations (0, 50, and 100 μmol L^-1). Based on the obtained results, plants used two contrasting strategies depending on the growing PPFD. In the first strategy, as a result of exposure to high PPFD, plants limited their leaf area and send the biomass towards the underground parts to limit light-absorbing surface area, which was confirmed by thicker leaves (lower specific leaf area). TiO₂ further improved the allocation of biomass to the underground parts when plants were exposed to higher PPFDs. In the second strategy, plants dissipated the absorbed light energy into the heat (NPQ) to protect the photosynthetic apparatus from high energy input due to carbohydrate and carotenoid accumulation as a result of exposure to higher PPFDs or TiO₂ concentrations. TiO₂ nanoparticle application up-regulated photosynthetic functionality under low, while down-regulated it under high PPFD. The best light use efficiency was noted at 300 m^-2 s^-1 PPFD, while TiO₂ nanoparticle spray stimulated light use efficiency at 75 m^-2 s^-1 PPFD. In conclusion, TiO₂ nanoparticle spray promotes plant growth and productivity, and this response is magnified as cultivation light intensity becomes limited.

Shade avoidance syndrome in soybean and ideotype toward shade tolerance

The shade avoidance syndrome (SAS) in soybean can have destructive effects on yield, as essential carbon resources reserved for yield are diverted to the petiole and stem for exaggerated elongation, resulting in lodging and susceptibility to disease. Despite numerous attempts to reduce the unfavorable impacts of SAS for the development of cultivars suitable for high-density planting or intercropping, the genetic bases and fundamental mechanisms of SAS remain largely unclear. The extensive research conducted in the model plant Arabidopsis provides a framework for understanding the SAS in soybean. Nevertheless, recent investigations suggest that the knowledge obtained from model Arabidopsis may not be applicable to all processes in soybean. Consequently, further efforts are required to identify the genetic regulators of SAS in soybean for molecular breeding of high-yield cultivars suitable for density farming. In this review, we present an overview of the recent developments in SAS studies in soybean and suggest an ideal planting architecture for shade-tolerant soybean intended for high-yield breeding.

Shading affects the starch structure and digestibility of wheat by regulating the photosynthetic light response of flag leaves

Heavy haze-induced decreases in solar radiation represent an important factor that affects the structural properties of starch macromolecules. However, the relationship between the photosynthetic light response of flag leaves and the structural properties of starch remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the impact of light deprivation (60 %) during the vegetative-growth or grain-filling stage on the leaf light response, starch structure, and biscuit-baking quality of four wheat cultivars with contrasting shade tolerance. Shading decreased the apparent quantum yield and maximum net photosynthetic rate of flag leaves, resulting in a lower grain-filling rate and starch content and higher protein content. Shading decreased the starch, amylose, and small starch granule amount and swelling power but increased the larger starch granule amount. Under shade stress, the lower amylose content decreased the resistant starch content while increasing the starch digestibility and estimated glycemic index. Shading during the vegetative-growth stage increased starch crystallinity, 1045/1022 cm^-1 ratio, starch viscosity, and the biscuit spread ratio, while shading during the grain-filling stage decreased these values. Overall, this study indicated that low light affects the starch structure and biscuit spread ratio by regulating the photosynthetic light response of flag leaves.

Phosphorous fertilization alleviates shading stress by regulating leaf photosynthesis and the antioxidant system in mung bean (Vigna radiata L.)

Shading can limit photosynthesis and plant growth. Understanding how phosphorus (P) application mitigates the effects of shading stress on morphology and physiology of mung beans (Vigna radiata L.) is of great significance for the establishment of efficient planting structures and optimizing P-use management. The effects of various light environments (non-shading stress, S0; low light stress, S1; severe shading stress, S2) on the growth of two mung bean cultivars (Xilv1 and Yulv1) and the role of P application (0 kg ha^-1, P0; 90 kg ha^-1, P1; 150 kg ha^-1, P2) in such responses were investigated in a field experiment. Our results demonstrated that shading decreased the dry matter accumulation of mung bean markedly by limiting photosynthesis capacity and disrupting agronomic traits. For the leaf areas of the two cultivars, chlorophyll a+b, the net photosynthetic and electron transport rates were increased by 16.8%, 20.0%, 15.5%, and 12.5% under P1 treatment, and by 32.4%, 40.3%, 16.3% and 12.8% under P2 treatment, respectively, when compared to those for the non-fertilized plants under shading stress. These responses resulted in increased light capture and weak light utilization. Moreover, the activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase were enhanced by 20.9% and 43.7%, respectively; malondialdehyde and superoxide anion contents were reduced by 18.6% and 14.1%, respectively, under P application. These findings suggest that P application moderately mitigates the damage caused by shading stress and enhances tolerance by regulating mung bean growth. In addition, Xilv1 was more sensitive to P under shading stress than Yulv1.

Characterization of Octa-aminopropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (OA-POSS) nanoparticles and their effect on sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) response to salinity stress

Salt stress is of the most detrimental abiotic stress factors on either crop or non-crop species. Of the strategies employed to boost the performance of the plants against harmful impacts of salt stress; application of novel nano-engineered particles have recently gained great attention as a promising tool. Octa-aminopropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes nanoparticles (OA-POSS NPs) were synthesized and then a foliar-application of OA-POSS NPs were carried out on sweet basil plants subjected to the salt stress. In that context, interactive effects of OA-POSS NPs (25, 50 and 100 mg L^-1) and salinity stress (50 and 100 mM NaCl) were assayed by estimating a series of agronomic, physiological, biochemical and analytical parameters. OA-POSS NPs decreased the harmful effects of salinity by increasing photosynthetic pigment content, adjusting chlorophyll fluorescence, and triggering non-enzymatic (phenolic content) and enzymatic antioxidant components. The findings suggested that 25 mg L^-1 OA-POSS NPs is the optimum concentration for sweet basil grown under salt stress. Considering the essential oil profile, estragole was the predominant compound with a percentage higher than 50% depending on the treatment. In comparison to the control group, 50 mM NaCl did not significantly affect estragole content, whilst 100 mM NaCl caused a substantial increase in estragole content. Regarding OA-POSS NPs treatments, increments by 16.8%, 11.8% and 17.5% were observed following application with 25, 50 and 100 mg L^-1, respectively. Taken together, the current study provides evidence that POSS NPs can be employed as novel, 'green' growth promoting agents in combating salt stress in sweet basil.

Effects of bulk and nano-ZnO particles on functioning of photosynthetic apparatus in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

The functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) after 7-days of exposure to bulk (b-ZnO) and nanosized ZnO (n-ZnO) (300, 2000, and 10,000 mg/l) has been investigated. An impact on the amount of chlorophylls, photosynthetic efficiency, as well as the zinc accumulation in chloroplasts was demonstrated. Violation of the chloroplast fine structure was revealed. These changes were generally more pronounced with n-ZnO exposure, especially at high concentrations. For instance, the chlorophyll deficiency under 10,000 mg/l b-ZnO treatment was 31% and with exposure to 10,000 mg/l n-ZnO, the chlorophyll deficiency was already 52%. The expression analysis of the photosynthetic genes revealed their different sensitivity to b-ZnO and n-ZnO exposure. The genes encoding subunits of photosystem II (PSII) and, to a slightly lesser extent, photosystem I (PSI) showed the highest suppression of transcriptional levels. The mRNA levels of the subunits of cytochrome-b₆f, NADH dehydrogenase, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase and ATP synthase, which, in addition to linear electron flow (LEF), participate in cyclic electron flow (CEF) and autotrophic CO₂ fixation, were more stable or increased under b-ZnO and n-ZnO treatments. At the same time, CEF was increased. It was assumed that under the action of b-ZnO and n-ZnO, the processes of LEF are disrupted, and CEF is activated. This allows the plant to prevent photo-oxidation and compensate for the lack of ATP for the CO₂ fixation process, thereby ensuring the stability of photosynthetic function in the initial stages of stress factor exposure. The study of photosynthetic structures of crops is important from the point of view of understanding the risks of reducing the production potential and the level of food security due to the growing use of nanoparticles in agriculture.

Exogenous 24-epibrassinolide promoted growth and nitrogen absorption and assimilation efficiency of apple seedlings under salt stress

Introduction

High salinity significantly hampers global agricultural productivity. Plants typically undergo lower nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUE) under salt stress. As an active byproduct from brassinolide biosynthesis, 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) is involved in regulating the stress-treated plant N absorption and assimilation. However, the exogenous EBR application effects' on N absorption and assimilation in apple exposed to the salt-stressed condition remains unclear.

Methods

We sprayed exogenous EBR (0.2 mg L^-1) on apple dwarf rootstock (M9T337) seedlings (growing hydroponically) under salt (NaCl) stress in a growth chamber. We analyzed the seedling development, photosynthesis and its-mediated C fixation, N ( NO 3 - ) absorption and assimilation in reponse to exogenous EBR application under salt stress.

Results

The findings demonstrated that NaCl stress greatly hampered seedlings' root growth and that exogenous EBR application obviously alleviated this growth suppression. Exogenous EBR-treated plants under NaCl stress displayed the more ideal root morphology and root activity, stronger salt stress tolerance and photosynthetic capacity as well as higher C- and N-assimilation enzyme activities, NO 3 - ion flow rate and nitrate transporter gene expression level than did untreated plants. Furthermore, the results of isotope labeling noted that exogenous EBR application also enhanced ¹³C-photoassimilate transport from leaves to roots and ¹⁵ NO 3 - transport from roots to leaves under NaCl stress.

Conclusion

Our findings imply that exogenous EBR application, through strengthening photosynthesis, C- and N-assimilation enzyme activities, nitrate absorption and transport as well as synchronized optimizing the distribution of seedlings' C and N, has a fundamental role in improving NUE in apple rootstock seedlings under salt stress.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles mediated biostimulant impact on cadmium detoxification and in silico analysis of zinc oxide-cadmium networks in Zea mays L. regulome

Cadmium (Cd) toxicity can significantly limit plant growth and development. To eliminate the toxic effects of Cd stress, we intended to evaluate the biochemical mediated physiological responses in maize treated with biostimulant and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnPs). In silico analysis exhibited that the maize treated with Cd stress (200 μM) had an adverse impact on CAT1, CAT2, CAT3 and gor1 proteins, which are influential in managing the machinery of redox homeostasis. While maize inoculated with bacteria-based biostimulant and ZnPs (10 ppm) showed prominently improved biomass, chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid content. We found a significant increase in the total sugar, protein, proline content and antioxidants under the effect of Cd stress. However, these parameters are further enhanced by applying biostimulants and ZnPs. Declined lipid peroxidation and membrane solubilization index under the effect of biostimulant and ZnPs was observed. Furthermore, these treatments improved maize's zinc, copper, sodium, magnesium, iron, potassium and calcium content. Based on these results, an antagonistic relationship between Zn and Cd uptake that triggered efficient Cd detoxification in maize shoot was found. Scanning electron micrography showed distorted leaf structure of the Cd stressed plants while the biostimulant and ZnPs reduced the structural cell damage of maize leaves. In silico study showed that ZnO positively regulates all protein interactors, including GRMZM2G317386_P01 (Metallo endo proteinase 1-MMP), GRMZM2G110220_P01 (Metallo endo proteinase 5-MMP), GRMZM2G103055_P01 (Alpha-amylase) and GRMZM2G006069_P01 (Zn-dependent exo peptidase superfamily) proteins which are involved in energy generating processes, channels formation, matrix re-localization and stress response. This suggests that ZnO offers an ideal role with protein interactors in maize. Our findings depict that these treatments, i.e., biostimulant and ZnPs alone, are efficient enough to exhibit Cd remediation potential in maize; however, their combination showed synergistic effects.

ROS as a key player in quinolone antibiotic stress on Arabidopsis thaliana: From the perspective of photosystem function, oxidative stress and phyllosphere microbiome

With the increasing use of antibiotics, their ecological impacts have received widespread attention. However, research on the toxicity of quinolone antibiotics is still limited, especially regarding the oxidative stress and phyllosphere of plants. In this study, the toxic effects of enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, and levofloxacin on Arabidopsis thaliana and their underlying mechanisms were investigated. The toxicity of the three quinolone antibiotics decreased in the following order: enrofloxacin > norfloxacin > levofloxacin. Physiological cellular changes, such as plasmolysis and chloroplast swelling, were observed using electron microscopy. Photosynthetic efficiency was inhibited with a decline in the effective photochemical quantum yield of photosystem II (Y(II)) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), indicating that quinolone antibiotics might reduce light energy conversion efficiency and excess light energy dissipation. Oxidative stress occurred in A. thaliana after quinolone antibiotic treatment, with an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. High ROS levels stimulated the over-expression of superoxide-responsive genes for self-protection. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis showed that photosynthesis inhibition and cellular damage caused by oxidative stress were critical factors for growth inhibition, suggesting that the antioxidant response activated by ROS might be a potential mechanism. Furthermore, the diversity of the phyllospheric microbial communities decreased after enrofloxacin exposure. Additionally, specific microbes were preferentially recruited to the phyllosphere because of the higher ROS levels.

Foliar Application of NH4 +/NO3 - Ratios Enhance the Lodging Resistance of Soybean Stem by Regulating the Physiological and Biochemical Mechanisms Under Shade Conditions

Shading is one of the most chronic restrains which can lead to the lodging of intercropped plants. In order to increase the soybean stem lodging resistance, a 2-year field trial was conducted to evaluate the impact of different ratios and concentrations of NH₄ ⁺/NO₃ ^- on the morpho-physiological and biochemical characteristics of soybean stem under shade conditions. The total 5 ratios of NH₄ ⁺/NO₃ ^- were applied as follows: T0 = 0/0 (control), T1 = 0/100 (higher ratio), T2 = 25/75 (optimum), T3 = 50/50 (optimum), and T4 = 75/25 (higher ratio) as a nitrogen source. Our findings displayed that the T2 (25/75) and T3 (50/50) treatments alleviated the shading stress by improving the photosynthetic activity, biomass accumulation, carbohydrates contents, and lignin related enzymes (POD, CAD, and 4Cl) which led to improvement in stem lodging resistance. The correlation analysis (p ≤ 0.05, p ≤ 0.01) revealed the strong relationship between lodging resistance index and stem diameter, stem strength, lignin content, photosynthesis, and lignin related enzymes (POD, CAD, and 4CL) evidencing the strong contribution of lignin and its related enzymes in the improvement of lodging resistance of soybean stem under shade conditions. Collectively, we concluded that optimum NH₄ ⁺/NO₃ ^- ratios (T2 and T3) can boost up the lodging resistance of soybean stem under shade stress.

Photosynthesis, Yield and Quality of Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) under Different Soil-Tillage Systems

Due to current climate changes and drought periods, it is recommended to cultivate soybean in no-plowing tillage systems. The conducted research is to contribute to a partial explanation of the course of photosynthesis processes in soybean plants, which may facilitate the decision making before sowing this species in a given tillage system. The aim of the study was to assess the dependence of photosynthesis on the yield and variable hydrothermal conditions of tillage systems, as well as their impact on the productivity and quality of soybean. A field experiment was carried out using soybean cv. Merlin, between 2017 and 2019 in Boguchwała, Poland. The plant tested was soybean cv. Merlin. The tillage systems—conventional (CT), reduced (RT) and no-tillage (NT)—were the experimental factors. The use of CT and RT influenced growth in leaf area index (LAI) and soil plant analysis development (SPAD) and improved the photosynthesis process, which increased the values of the maximal quantum yield of the photolysis system of the donor side of PSII (Fv/F0), and performance index of PS II (PI) and net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs) parameters, compared to NT. CT treatment increased the yield of soybean plants to significantly higher compared with NT treatment, and seeds treated with the CT treatment contained more protein. The content of fat and phosphorus (P) were significantly higher in the NT system and the content of potassium (K) from RT. In 2017, under drought conditions (the June–September period), the seed yield of NT was similar to the yield of CT and significantly higher than the yield of RT. The higher value of hydrothermal coefficients in 2019 resulted in an increase in photosynthesis parameters, seed yield as well as the content of fat and elements P and K.

Low Light Increases the Abundance of Light Reaction Proteins: Proteomics Analysis of Maize (Zea mays L.) Grown at High Planting Density

Maize (Zea mays L.) is usually planted at high density, so most of its leaves grow in low light. Certain morphological and physiological traits improve leaf photosynthetic capacity under low light, but how light absorption, transmission, and transport respond at the proteomic level remains unclear. Here, we used tandem mass tag (TMT) quantitative proteomics to investigate maize photosynthesis-related proteins under low light due to dense planting, finding increased levels of proteins related to photosystem II (PSII), PSI, and cytochrome b₆f. These increases likely promote intersystem electron transport and increased PSI end electron acceptor abundance. OJIP transient curves revealed increases in some fluorescence parameters under low light: quantum yield for electron transport (φE_o), probability that an electron moves beyond the primary acceptor Q_A^- (ψ_o), efficiency/probability of electron transfer from intersystem electron carriers to reduction end electron acceptors at the PSI acceptor side (δR_o), quantum yield for reduction of end electron acceptors at the PSI acceptor side (φR_o), and overall performance up to the PSI end electron acceptors (PI_total). Thus, densely planted maize shows elevated light utilization through increased electron transport efficiency, which promotes coordination between PSII and PSI, as reflected by higher apparent quantum efficiency (AQE), lower light compensation point (LCP), and lower dark respiration rate (R_d).

Exogenous brassinosteroids increases tolerance to shading by altering stress responses in mung bean (Vigna radiata L.)

Plant steroidal hormones, brassinosteroids, play a key role in various developmental processes of plants and the adaptation to various environmental stresses. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of exogenous 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) application on the morphology, photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, photosynthetic enzymes activities, and endogenous hormone content of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) leaves under shading stress environment. Two mung bean cultivars, Xilv 1 and Yulv 1, were tested. The results showed that all of the investigated data were significantly affected by shading stress; however, foliar application of EBR increased the net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and decreased intercellular CO₂ concentration of mung bean leaves under shading condition. Increased photosynthetic capacity in EBR-treated leaves was accompanied by improvement in higher photosynthetic enzymes activities. EBR-treated leaves exhibited more quantum yield of PSII electron transport and efficiency of energy capture than the control, which was mainly due to clearer leaf anatomical structure such as palisade tissues and spongy tissues, further resulting in altered plant morphological characteristics. Moreover, the treatment with EBL regulated the endogenous hormone content, including the decreased gibberellins and increased brassinolide, although to different levels. Combined with the morphological and physiological responses, we concluded that exogenous EBR treatment is beneficial to enhancing plant tolerance to shading stress and mitigating injure from weak light. The modifications of the physiological metabolism through EBR application may be a potential strategy to weaken shading stress in the future sustainable agricultural production.

Application of titanium regulates the functional components of photosynthetic apparatus in grafted seedlings of Carya cathayensis Sarg. under shade

Light acts as a key environmental factor for normal growth and development of plants. Carya cathayensis Sarg. (hickory) faces low light conditions, especially those caused by cloudy or rainy days during the rapid growth period, which has caused adverse effects on its growth. In the current investigation, to alleviate the adverse effects of insufficient light on the cultivation of hickory, anti-hydrolyze stabilized ionic titanium (ASIT) was sprayed on the leaves of the three kinds of grafted seedlings and the non-grafted seedlings of hickory grown under different shade conditions. Results showed that the leaf mass per area and chlorophyll content of grafted hickory seedlings were increased after ASIT application. Rubisco content and photosynthetic rate (P_n) of seedlings grown under shading conditions were positively affected by ASIT treatment, especially on the 45th day of treatment, while the interaction effects of the two parameters between ASIT application and different shade treatments were significant. Titanium accumulation was the highest in roots, followed by leaves, and then in stems, while ASIT had the most significant effects on roots and leaves under 50 ± 5% shade. Severe shading inhibited growth and lead to serious destruction of chloroplast ultrastructure. In addition, the role of ASIT was rootstock-dependent, since ASIT had the weakest mitigation effect on the C/H grafted seedlings. To sum up, the application of ASIT to the grafted seedlings of hickory could improve its ability to resist shade stress.

Photochemical Efficiency of Photosystem II in Inverted Leaves of Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] Affected by Elevated Temperature and High Light

In summer, high light and elevated temperature are the most common abiotic stresses. The frequent occurrence of monsoon exposes the abaxial surface of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] leaves to direct solar radiation, resulting in irreversible damage to plant photosynthesis. In this study, chlorophyll a fluorescence was used to evaluate the functional status of photosystem II (PSII) in inverted leaves under elevated temperature and high light. In two consecutive growing seasons, we tested the fluorescence and gas exchange parameters of soybean leaves for 10 days and 15 days (5 days after recovery). Inverted leaves had lower tolerance compared to normal leaves and exhibited lower photosynthetic performance, quantum yield, and electron transport efficiency under combined elevated temperature and high light stress, along with a significant increase in absorption flux per reaction center (RC) and the energy dissipation of the RC, resulting in significantly lower performance indexes (PI_ABS and PI_total) and net photosynthetic rate (P _n ) in inverted leaves. High light and elevated temperature caused irreversible membrane damage in inverted leaves, as photosynthetic performance parameters (P _n , PI_ABS, and PI_total) did not return to control levels after inverted leaves recovered. In conclusion, inverted leaves exhibited lower photosynthetic performance and PSII activity under elevated temperature and high light stress compared to normal leaves.

Soil Microbial Communities Altered by Titanium Ions in Different Agroecosystems of Pitaya and Grape

Titanium (Ti) is an element beneficial to plant growth. Application of titanium to roots or leaves at low concentrations can improve crop yield and performance. However, the effect of titanium ions on the bulk soil microbial community of planted crops remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the effects of titanium on soil bacterial and fungal communities. Field surveys were conducted to determine the effect of titanium ions on bulk soil microbial communities in pitaya and grape plantations of Panzhihua and Xichang areas, respectively. Full-length 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) amplicon sequencing were performed using PacBio Sequel to further explore the composition and structure of soil microbiota. The application of titanium ions significantly altered the composition and structure of soil microbiota. Root irrigation with titanium ions in pitaya gardens reduced the diversity of soil fungi and bacteria. However, the decline in bacterial diversity was not statistically significant. Meanwhile, foliar spray of titanium ions on grapes greatly reduced the soil microbial diversity. The bulk soil microbiota had a core of conserved taxa, and titanium ions significantly altered their relative abundances. Furthermore, the application of titanium increased the interaction network of soil fungi and bacteria compared with the control group. Thus, titanium ions potentially improve the stability of the soil microbial community.

IMPORTANCE Pitaya and grape are important cash crops in the Panzhihua and Xichang areas, respectively, where they are well adapted. Titanium is a plant growth-promoting element, but the interaction between titanium and soil microorganisms is poorly understood. Titanium ions are still not widely used for growing pitaya and grape in the two regions. Thus, we investigated the effects of titanium ions on soil microbial communities of the two fruit crops in these two regions. Microbial diversity decreased, and the community structure changed; however, the addition of titanium ions enhanced cooccurrence relationships and improved the stability of the community. This study provides a basis for the importance of titanium ion application in crop cultivation.

Comparative Analysis of the Morphological, Physiological, Proteomic, and Metabolic Mechanisms of the "Biloxi" Blueberry Response to Shade Stress

Blueberry is an important small berry crop in economic forests. In hot summers, the top tip of blueberry often burns and withers due to water loss. Therefore, this study subjected blueberry to shading treatment in the summer to study the effects of different shading treatments on the growth, morphology, physiology and protein levels of the plant. The results showed that the 50% shading (T1) treatment yielded the highest average increases in plant height, crown width, and ground diameter of blueberry. Under the 80% shading (T2) treatment, the cells of the leaves dissolved, the morphology was incomplete, the vascular bundles disappeared, and no supporting skeleton was detected. As demonstrated by physiological and biochemical data and the proteome expression levels, the T1 shading treatment was beneficial to the growth of blueberry and significantly enriched the photosynthetic pathway and flavonoid biosynthesis. An analysis of the interaction network of differentially expressed proteins indicated that trans-cinnamate 4-monooxygenase (C4H, CYP73A), naringenin 3-dioxygenase (F3H) and bifunctional dihydroflavonol 4-reductase/flavanone 4-reductase (DFR) exhibited high connectivity and mutual regulation. In short, 50% shading can improve the growth index of blueberry and lead to an enrichment of flavonoid biosynthesis. This study provides a scientific basis for the breeding and summer protection of blueberry seedlings.

Mung Bean (Vigna radiata L.) Source Leaf Adaptation to Shading Stress Affects Not Only Photosynthetic Physiology Metabolism but Also Control of Key Gene Expression

Shading stress strongly limits the effective growth of plants. Understanding how plant morphogenesis and physiological adaptation are generated in response to the reduced low light conditions is important for food crop development. In this study, two mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) cultivars, namely, Xilv 1 and Yulv 1, were grown in the field to explore the effects of shading stress on their growth. The results of morphology, physiology, and biochemistry analyses showed that the shading stress significantly weakened the leaf photosynthetic capacity as measured by the decreased net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate and increased intercellular CO₂ concentration. These responses resulted in plant morphological characteristics that increased the light energy absorption in low light conditions. Such variations occurred due to the leaf anatomical structure with destroyed palisade tissues and spongy tissues. Under shading stress, Yulv 1 showed higher physiological metabolic intensity than Xilv 1, which was related to changes in chlorophyll (Chl), such as Chl a and b, and Chl a/b ratio. Compared with normal light conditions, the Chl fluorescence values, photosynthetic assimilation substances, and enzyme activities in mung bean plants under shading stress were reduced to different extent. In addition, the relative expression levels of VrGA2ox, VrGA20ox1, VrGA3ox1, VrROT3, and VrBZR1, which are related to endogenous hormone in mung bean leaves, were upregulated by shading stress, further leading to the improvements in the concentrations of auxin, gibberellins (GAs), and brassinolide (BR). Combined with the morphological, physiological, and molecular responses, Yulv 1 has stronger tolerance and ecological adaptability to shading stress than Xilv 1. Therefore, our study provides insights into the agronomic traits and gene expressions of mung bean cultivars to enhance their adaptability to the shading stress.

Interactive effects of biochar and mussel shell activated concoctions on immobilization of nickel and their amelioration on the growth of rapeseed in contaminated aged soil

Mussel shell (MS) and biochar (BC) are commonly used for the remediation of metal contaminated soil. However, less research has been focused to examine the efficacy of their combinations to reduce metal toxicity in crop plants. This study was therefore conducted to investigate the effects of BC, MS and their activated concoctions on the soil properties, enzyme activities and nickel (Ni) immobilization in aged Ni contaminated soil. Moreover, the growth, photosynthetic pigments and anti-oxidative machnery of Brassica napus plants has also been investigated in order to determine amendments efficiency in reducing soil Ni toxicity for plants. The results showed that the application of Ni adversely affected soil health and trigged stress responses by inducing oxidative stress in B. napus. However, the incorporation of amendments reduced the bioavailability of Ni, and the concoctions of BC and MS showed promising results in the immobilization of Ni. Among various combinations of BC and MS, treatment with BC + MS (3:1) significantly reduced Ni uptake, decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and enhanced antioxidant defense of B. napus plants. Results showed that amendment's combinations stimulated the transcriptional levels of ROS scavenging enzymes and suppressed the expression level of Ni transporters. The morphological and physical characterization techniques (i.e. SEM, BET, EDS, FTIR and X-ray diffraction analyses) showed that amendment's combinations had relatively higher Ni adsorption capacity, indicating that BC and MS concoctions are efficient immobilizing agents for minimizing Ni availability, preventing oxidative toxicity and promoting growth and biomass production in rapeseed plants under metal stress conditions.

Can light intensity modulate the physiological, anatomical, and reproductive responses of soybean plants to water deficit?

Little is known about the role of light intensity in modulating plant responses to stress due to water deficit (WD). Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the WD and contrasting irradiance effects on the physiology, anatomy, and grain yield of soybean plants. The experimental design was a randomized block in a growth chamber and a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement: 90% (well-watered, WW) and 40% (WD) of soil field capacities (FC); and 750 (medium irradiance, MI) and 1500 (higher irradiance, HI) μmol (photons) m-2  s-1 irradiance. The WD caused a lower photosynthetic rate - as well as observed in the light curve and in the relative parameters, such as apparent quantum efficiency -, less investment in shoot biomass and pollen grain germination, resulting in lower grain yield. However, there was an increase in non-photochemical energy dissipation, a higher concentration of total soluble sugars, proline, and malondialdehyde. The WD + MI-soybean plants developed thicker spongy parenchyma (related to higher mesophilic conductance of CO2 ). In the WW + HI condition the palisade parenchyma was thicker, conferring maintenance of photosynthetic efficiency. In addition, there was an increase in the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase antioxidant enzymes in leaves due to HI, regardless of FC. This induced higher energy expenditure, reflected in the reduction of the number of leaf and branches, leaf area, dry mass of leaves and stem in the WW + HI. Interestingly, these strategies of osmotic adjustment, photoprotection, and antioxidant defenses act together in the WD + HI.

Physiological and biochemical effects of Ti3AlC2 nanosheets on rice (Oryza sativa L.)

MAX phase materials are a new type of nanomaterial with wide applications, but the potential effects of MAX phase materials on plants have not been reported. Herein, we selected Ti₃AlC₂ nanosheets as a typical MAX phase material to investigate its potential impacts on rice (Oryza sativa L.) at 0-1000 μg·mL^-1. The foliar application of Ti₃AlC₂ at 100 and 1000 μg·mL^-1 inhibited the growth of rice seedlings by producing excess reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, foliar spraying of Ti₃AlC₂ at 100 μg·mL^-1 decreased the stomatal aperture (78.6%) and increased the number of trichomes (100%). These responses demonstrated that the application of Ti₃AlC₂ could interfere with the immune system of plants by changing the structure and function of leaves, disturbing the activities of antioxidant enzymes. According to the above results, we concluded that the toxicity of Ti₃AlC₂ nanosheets on plants was mainly caused by the release of titanium ions. This study provides a valuable reference for understanding the impact of MAX phase materials on plants.

Effects of light spectrum on morpho-physiological traits of grafted tomato seedlings

It is already known that there are many factors responsible for the successful grafting process in plants, including light intensity. However, the influence of the spectrum of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on this process has almost never been tested. During the pre-grafting process tomato seedlings grew for 30 days under 100 μmol m-2 s-1 of mixed LEDs (red 70%+ blue 30%). During the post-grafting period, seedlings grew for 20 days under the same light intensity but the lightening source was either red LED, mixed LEDs (red 70% + blue 30%), blue LED or white fluorescent lamps. This was done to determine which light source(s) could better improve seedling quality and increase grafting success. Our results showed that application of red and blue light mixture (R7:B3) caused significant increase in total leaf area, dry weight (total, shoot and root), total chlorophyll/carotenoid ratio, soluble protein and sugar content. Moreover, this light treatment maintained better photosynthetic performance i.e. more effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry Y(II), better photochemical quenching (qP), and higher electron transport rate (ETR). This can be partially explained by the observed upregulation of gene expression levels of PsaA and PsbA and the parallel protein expression levels. This in turn could lead to better functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus of tomato seedlings and then to faster production of photoassimilate ready to be translocated to various tissues and organs, including those most in need, i.e., involved in the formation of the graft union.

Optimal NH4 + /NO3 - ratios enhance the shade tolerance of soybean seedlings under low light conditions

In the maize-soybean intercropping system, shade is the major chronic restraint that affects normal growth of soybean. Different spatial patterns of this system affect the microclimate of soybean through shading from maize plants. However, the negative impacts of shading stress can be mitigated by providing optimal ratios of different fertilizers. Therefore, to test this hypothesis, soybean plants were grown under different light conditions (normal light or shade) to evaluate the response to varying NH4 + /NO3 - ratios. Seeds of soybean (Glycine max L. cv. Nan-99-6) were grown in nutrient solution with a total concentration of 5 mM N using different NH4 + /NO3 - ratios (T0  = 0:0, T1  = 0:100, T2  = 25:75, T3  = 50:50 and T4  = 75:25) for 40 days in a greenhouse at PPFD 320.95 μmol m-2  s-1 (low light) or 967.53 μmol m-2  s-1 (normal light). Under low light, growth and photosynthesis of soybean seedlings significantly decreased as compared to normal light conditions. However, the optimal ratios of NH4 + / NO3 - improved growth and photosynthesis of soybean seedlings under both light conditions. Our results indicated that soybean seedlings supplied with optimal NH4 + /NO3 - ratios (25:75 and 50:50) have maximum biomass yield, chlorophyll pigments, leaf gas exchange, photochemical activity and root growth as compared to low and high NH4 + /NO3 - ratios (T1 and T4 ). High ratios of NH4 + /NO3 - (T4 ) resulted in reduced plant growth due to nutrient accumulation in plant tissues; therefore, we suggest that optimal ratios of NH4 + /NO3 - (T2 and T3 ) can enhance the shade tolerance of soybean seedlings.

Photosynthetic apparatus performance of tomato seedlings grown under various combinations of LED illumination

It is already known that the process of photosynthesis depends on the quality and intensity of light. However, the influence of the new light sources recently used in horticulture, known as Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), on this process is not yet fully understood. Chlorophyll a fluorescence measurement has been widely used as a rapid, reliable, and noninvasive tool to study the efficiency of the photosystem II (PSII) and to evaluate plant responses to various environmental factors, including light intensity and quality. In this work, we tested the responses of the tomato photosynthetic apparatus to different light spectral qualities. Our results showed that the best performance of the photosynthetic apparatus was observed under a mixture of red and blue light (R7:B3) or a mixture of red, green and blue light (R3:G2:B5). This was demonstrated by the increase in the effective photochemical quantum yield of PSII (Y[II]), photochemical quenching (qP) and electron transport rate (ETR). On the other hand, the mixture of red and blue light with a high proportion of blue light led to an increase in non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). Our results can be used to improve the production of tomato plants under artificial light conditions. However, since we found that the responses of the photosynthetic apparatus of tomato plants to a particular light regime were cultivar-dependent and there was a weak correlation between the growth and photosynthetic parameters tested in this work, special attention should be paid in future research.

Positive effects of metallic nanoparticles on plants: Overview of involved mechanisms

Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) are considered as potential agents for agriculture as fertilizers, growth enhancers and pesticides. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms that are responsible for their effects is important. Various studies demonstrated that the application of nontoxic concentrations can promote seed germination, enhance plant growth and increase the yield. Moreover, NPs can be used to protect plants from environmental impacts such as salt or drought stress and diminish accumulation and toxicity of heavy metals. NPs can serve as a source of micronutrients (e.g. ZnO, iron- and manganese-based NPs), thus increasing fitness and helps plants to cope with stress conditions. TiO₂ and iron-based NPs are able to delay senescence and speed-up cell division via changes in phytohormonal levels. The application of some NPs can promote the activity of enzymes such as amylase, nitrate reductase, phosphatase, phytase and carbonic anhydrases, which are involved in metabolism and nutrient acquisition. E.g. ZnO and TiO₂ NPs can stimulate chlorophyll biosynthesis and photosynthetic activity. Iron-based and CeO₂ NPs enhance stomata opening resulting in better gas exchange and CO₂ assimilation rate. NPs can also modulate oxidative stress by the stimulation of the antioxidant enzymes such peroxidases and superoxide dismutase. However, the knowledge about the fate, transformation, and accumulation of NPs in the environment and organisms is needed prior to their use in agriculture to avoid negative environmental impacts. Higher or lower toxicity of various NPs was established for microorganisms, plants or animals. In this overview, we focused on the possible mechanisms of Ag, ZnO, TiO₂, Fe-based, CeO₂, Al₂O₃, and manganese-based NPs responsible for their positive effects on plants.

Biochar-mediated transformation of titanium dioxide nanoparticles concerning TiO2NPs-biochar interactions, plant traits and tissue accumulation to cell translocation

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂NPs) application in variety of commercial products would likely release these NPs into the environment. The interaction of TiO₂NPs with terrestrial plants upon uptake can disturb plants functional traits and can also transfer to the food chain members. In this study, we investigated the impact of TiO₂NPs on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants functional traits, primary macronutrients assimilation, and change in the profile of bio-macromolecule. Moreover, the mechanism of biochar-TiO₂NPs interaction, immobilization, and tissue accumulation to cell translocation of NPs in plants was also explored. The results indicated that the contents of Ti in wheat tissues was reduced about 3-fold and the Ti transfer rate (per day) was reduced about 2 fold at the 1000 mg L^-1 exposure level of TiO₂NPs in biochar amended exposure medium. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with elemental mapping confirmed that Ti concentrated in plant tissues in nano-form. The interactive effect of TiO₂NPs + biochar amendment on photosynthesis related and gas exchange traits was observed at relatively low TiO₂NPs exposure level (200 mg L^-1), which induced the positive impact on wheat plants proliferation. TiO₂NPs alone exposure to wheat also modified the plant's bio-macromolecules profile with the reduction in the assimilation of primary macronutrients, which could affect the food crop nutritional value and quality. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) chemical analysis of biochar + TiO₂NPs showed an additional peak, which indicated the binding interaction of NPs with biochar. Moreover, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed that the biochar carboxyl group is the main functionality involved in the bonding process with TiO₂NPs. These findings will help for a mechanistic understanding of the role of biochar in the reduction of NPs bioavailability to primary producers of the terrestrial environment.

Foliar application of silicon improves growth of soybean by enhancing carbon metabolism under shading conditions

An experiment was set up to investigate physiological responses of soybeans to silicon (Si) under normal light and shade conditions. Two soybean varieties, Nandou 12 (shade resistant), and Nan 032-4 (shade susceptible), were tested. Our results revealed that under shading, the net assimilation rate and the plant growth were significantly reduced. However, foliar application of Si under normal light and shading significantly improved the net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (Tr), and decreased intercellular carbon dioxide concentration (Ci). The net photosynthetic rate of Nandou 12 under normal light and shading increased by 46.4% and 33.3% respectively with Si treatment (200 mg/kg) compared to controls. Si application also enhanced chlorophyll content, soluble sugars, fresh weight, root length, root surface area, root volume, root-shoot ratio, and root dry weight under both conditions. Si application significantly increased the accumulation of some carbohydrates such as soluble sugar and sucrose in stems and leaves ensuring better stem strength under both conditions. Si application significantly increased the yield by increasing the number of effective pods per plant, the number of beans per plant and the weight of beans per plant. After Si treatment, the yield increased 24.5% under mono-cropping, and 17.41% under intercropping. Thus, Si is very effective in alleviating the stress effects of shading in intercropped soybeans by increasing the photosynthetic efficiency and lodging resistance.

Foliar application of silicon improves stem strength under low light stress by regulating lignin biosynthesis genes in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.)

In order to improve soybean's resistance to lodging, silicon (Si) solutions at concentrations of 0,100, 200,300 mg kg-1 were applied during the seedling stage. The Si accumulation in different parts of the plants, the photosynthetic parameters of leaves and chlorophyll content, the stem bending resistance, the expression of genes of lignin biosynthesis and associated enzyme activity and sap flow rates were measured at early and late growth stages. The potential mechanisms for how Si improve growth and shade tolerance, enhances lodging resistance and improves photosynthesis were analyzed to provide a theoretical basis for the use of Si amendments in agriculture. After application of Si at 200 mg kg-1, the net photosynthetic rate of soybeans increased by 46.4 % in the light and 33.3 % under shade. The application of Si increased chlorophyll content, and fresh weight of leaves, reduced leaf area and enhanced photosynthesis by increasing stomatal conductance. The activity of peroxidase (POD), 4-coumarate:CoA ligase (4CL), cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) increased during pre-and post-growth periods, whereas Si also increased lignin accumulation and inhibited lodging. We concluded that Si affects the composition of plant cell walls components, mostly by altering linkages of non-cellulosic polymers and lignin. The modifications of the cell wall network through Si application could be a useful strategy to reduce shading stress in intercropping.

Titanium Application Increases Phosphorus Uptake Through Changes in Auxin Content and Root Architecture in Soybean (Glycine Max L.)

Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient needed for plant growth, development, and production. A deficiency of P causes a severe impact on plant development and productivity. Several P-based fertilizers are being used in agriculture but limited uptake of P by the plant is still a challenge to be solved. Titanium (Ti) application increases the nutrient uptake by affecting the root growth; however, the role of Ti in plant biology, specifically its application under low light and phosphorus stress, has never been reported. Therefore, a pot study was planned with foliar application of Ti (in a different concentration ranging from 0 to 1,000 mg L^-1) under different light and P concentrations. The result indicated that under shade and low P conditions the foliar application of Ti in different concentrations significantly improves the plant growth parameters such as root length, root surface area, root dry matter, and shoot dry matters. The increase was observed to be more than 100% in shade and low P stressed soybean root parameter with 500 mg L^-1 of Ti treatment. Ti was observed to improve the plant growth both in high P and low P exposed plants, but the improvement was more obvious in Low P exposed plants. Auxin concentration in stressed and healthy plant roots was observed to be slightly increased with Ti application. Ti application was also observed to decrease rhizosphere soil pH and boosted the antioxidant enzymatic activities with an enhancement in photosynthetic efficiency of soybean plants under shade and P stress. With 500 mg L^-1 of Ti treatment, the photosynthetic rate was observed to improve by 45% under shade and P stressed soybean plants. Thus, this work for the first time indicates a good potential of Ti application in the low light and P deficient agricultural fields for the purpose to improve plant growth and development parameters.

Agro-Techniques for Lodging Stress Management in Maize-Soybean Intercropping System-A Review

Lodging is one of the most chronic restraints of the maize-soybean intercropping system, which causes a serious threat to agriculture development and sustainability. In the maize-soybean intercropping system, shade is a major causative agent that is triggered by the higher stem length of a maize plant. Many morphological and anatomical characteristics are involved in the lodging phenomenon, along with the chemical configuration of the stem. Due to maize shading, soybean stem evolves the shade avoidance response and resulting in the stem elongation that leads to severe lodging stress. However, the major agro-techniques that are required to explore the lodging stress in the maize-soybean intercropping system for sustainable agriculture have not been precisely elucidated yet. Therefore, the present review is tempted to compare the conceptual insights with preceding published researches and proposed the important techniques which could be applied to overcome the devastating effects of lodging. We further explored that, lodging stress management is dependent on multiple approaches such as agronomical, chemical and genetics which could be helpful to reduce the lodging threats in the maize-soybean intercropping system. Nonetheless, many queries needed to explicate the complex phenomenon of lodging. Henceforth, the agronomists, physiologists, molecular actors and breeders require further exploration to fix this challenging problem.

Copper Nanomaterial Morphology and Composition Control Foliar Transfer through the Cuticle and Mediate Resistance to Root Fungal Disease in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

Two copper nanomaterials (CuO nanoparticles [NPs] and Cu₃(PO₄)₂·3H₂O nanosheets) and CuSO₄ were applied to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) leaves, and elemental Cu movement from the leaf surface through the cuticle and into the interior leaf tissue was monitored over 8 h. Two forms of nanoscale Cu were used to foliar treat tomato on a weekly basis in greenhouse and field experiments in the presence of the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. For CuSO₄, Cu accumulation and retention in the cuticle was over 7-fold greater than the nanomaterials, demonstrating that nanoscale morphology and composition mediate Cu accumulation in leaf tissue. In the greenhouse, weekly foliar applications of the nanosheets and NPs increased seedling biomass by 90.9 and 93.3%, respectively, compared to diseased and ionic Cu controls. In the field, Cu₃(PO₄)₂·3H₂O nanosheets reduced disease progress by 26.0% and significantly increased fruit yield by over 45.5% per plant relative to the other treatments in diseased soil. These findings suggest that nanoscale nutrient chemical properties can be tuned to maximize and control movement through the cuticle and that interactions at the seedling leaf biointerface can lead to season-long benefit for tomato growing in the presence of Fusarium spp.

Photosynthetic base of reduced grain yield by shading stress during the early reproductive stage of two wheat cultivars

The young microspore (YM) stage is the most sensitive period for wheat grain formation to abiotic stress. Shading stress during YM stage reduces grain yield mainly due to grain number decrease. However, the photosynthetic base for grain number decrease is still unclear. In this study, 100% (control), 40% (S1), and 10% (S2) of natural light were applied for 1, 3, 5, and 7 days (D1, D3, D5 and D7) during YM stage of two wheat cultivars (Henong825, Kenong9204). The results showed that grain number in Henong825 and Kenong9204 was reduced by - 3.6 to 33.3% and 14.2-72.7%, respectively. The leaf photosynthetic rate (Pn) in Henong825 and Kenong9204 was deducted by 4.5-93.9% and 26.4-99.0%. Under S1-D1, the leaf Pn of Henong825 reducing was mainly due to the reduction of light intensity. With shading intensity and duration increasing, the reasons for leaf Pn decrease were the low light intensity, the low Gs (stomatal conductance) and chlorophyll content, the damage of ultrastructure of chloroplast and photosynthetic system. Under S2-D7, the chlorophyll content, Fv/Fm (maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II) and Jmax (maximum electron transport) were reduced by 19.6%, 5.2% and 28.8% in Henong825, and by 29.9%, 7.8% and 33.1% in Kenong9204. After shading removal, the leaf Pn of Kenong9204 under D5 and D7 could not reach to the level of CK. This study indicated that the reduction of leaf Pn was mainly due to the low light intensity under short shading duration (shorter than 3 days), and due to low light intensity and damage of the leaf photosynthetic system under longer shading duration (longer than 5 days), especially for Kenong9204 (shade-sensitive cultivar).

Foliar graphene oxide treatment increases photosynthetic capacity and reduces oxidative stress in cadmium-stressed lettuce

The application of graphene oxide (GO) in the environment can have a positive or negative effect on the toxicity of pollutants, but the effect of GO on cadmium (Cd2+)-stressed lettuce has not yet been thoroughly studied. Therefore, we assessed the potential effects of foliar GO sprays on photosynthesis and antioxidant systems in Cd-stressed lettuce. We found that the foliar application of 30 mg L-1 of GO could significantly reduce signs of Cd2+ toxicity in lettuce. We observed increased net photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, transpiration rates, chlorophyll content, primary maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II, actual quantum yield, photosynthetic electron transport rates, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase and oxygenase concentrations, and biomass in Cd2+-stressed lettuce treated with GO. In addition, the foliar application of 30 mg L-1 of GO reduced the accumulation of the reactive oxygen species O·̄2 and H2O2, malondialdehyde content, and the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The decreased antioxidant enzyme activity could have been due to the decrease in reactive oxygen species. Cd2+ pollution is highly destructive to agricultural products, and the foliar application of GO provides a new potential tactic to improve the tolerance of plants to heavy metals.

Uptake and utilization of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as related to yield advantage in maize-soybean intercropping under different row configurations

Intercropping advantage occurs only when each species has adequate time and space to maximize cooperation and minimize competition between them. A field experiment was conducted for two consecutive years between 2013 and 2014 to investigate the effects of maize and soybean relay strip intercropping systems on the uptake and utilization of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The treatments included "40:160" (T1, maize narrow and wide row spacing of 40 and 160 cm, where two rows of soybean with a 40 cm row were planted in the wide rows. The area occupation ratio of maize and soybean both were 50% of the every experimental block), "80:120" (T2, maize narrow and wide row spacing of 80 and 120 cm, the soybean planting was the same as T1 treatment. The area occupation ratio of maize and soybean were 60% and 40% of the every experimental block), "100:100" (T3, one row of maize and one row of soybean with a 100-cm row. The area occupation ratio of maize and soybean was the same as T1 treatment), sole cropping of maize (CK1, The area occupation ratio of maize was 100% of the every experimental block), and sole cropping of soybean (CK2, The area occupation ratio of soybean was 100% of the every experimental block). The results show that, compared with the sole cropping system (sole maize), the economic yields in T1, T2, and T3 treatments increased by 761, 536, and 458 kg·ha-1, respectively, and the biological yields increased by 2410, 2127, and 1588 kg·ha-1. The uptake and utilization of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in T1, T2, and T3 treatments were significantly higher than those in sole crops, and the nutrient advantage is mainly due to nutrient uptake rather than nutrient use efficiency. The land equivalent ratio values in T1, T2, and T3 treatments were 1.43, 1.32, and 1.20, respectively. In particular, the economic and biological yield in T1 treatment exhibited potential as an intercropping pattern.

Acclimation strategy and plasticity of different soybean genotypes in intercropping

In response to shading, plant leaves acclimate through a range of morphological, physiological and biochemical changes. Plants produce a myriad of structurally and functionally diverse metabolites that play many important roles in plant response to continually changing environmental conditions as well as abiotic and biotic stresses. To develop a clearer understanding of the effects of shade on soybeans at different growth stages, a comprehensive, three-year, stage-wise study was conducted. Leaf area, leaf thickness, stem diameter, chlorophyll contents, photosynthetic characteristics and other morphological and physiological features were measured along with biochemical assays for antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and caralase and yield attributes of different soybean genotypes (Guixia 2, Nandou12, Nandong Kang-22, E61 and C103) under shading nets with 50% light transmittance. It was observed that early shading (VER1 and VER2) significantly decreased main stem length and main stem length/stem diameter. Later shading (R1R8 and R2R8) had significant effects on morphological characters such as branch number and pod height. In Nandou 12, the protein contents in plants shaded at R1R8, R2R8 and R5R8 were 9.20, 8.98 and 6.23% higher than in plants grown under normal light levels (CK), respectively, and the crude fat content was 9.31, 10.74 and 4.28% lower. The influence of shading in the later period on anatomy was greater than that in the earlier period. Shading reduced the light saturation point (LSP), the light compensation point (LCP) and the maximum photosynthetic rate (Pnmax), and increased the apparent quantum yield (AQ). Shading also increased the antioxidant enzyme activity in the plants, and this increase was greater with early shading than late. The variability in the chlorophyll (a + b) content and the chlorophyll a/b ratio in R2 stage plants was less than in R5 stage (VER5) plants. Similarly, the activity of antioxidant enzymes in R2 after returning the plants to normal light levels (VER2) was lower than in R5 after relighting (VER5). Compared with later shading, the early shading had a greater effect on the photosynthetic and related characteristics. The longer the shading time, the greater the adverse effects and the less able the plants' were to recover. The data collected in this study contribute to an understanding of the physiological mechanisms underlying the early and late growth stage acclimation strategies in different soybean genotypes subjected to shade stress.

Different strategies for lead detoxification in dwarf bamboo tissues

Dwarf bamboo Sasa argenteostriata (Regel) E.G. Camus is considered as potential plants for metal phytoremediation in previous filed observations. However, the mechanisms of lead (Pb) detoxification has not been described. The objective of this study was to explore the difference strategies or mechanisms of Pb detoxification in plant tissues. In this regard, four Pb treatments with hydroponics including 0 (control), 300, 600, and 900 mg L^-1 were conducted to examine subcellular compartmentalization, Pb accumulation/species and antioxidant-assisted chelation. Our findings showed the retention of Pb by the whip-root system is one of its detoxification mechanisms to avoid damage the shoots. In addition, the cell wall retention is the dominant detoxification strategy of whips, new roots, old roots and new/old stems, while vacuolar compartmentalization is for new/old leaves. Interestingly, four low-mobility/-toxicity Pb species (i.e., FNaCl, FHAc, FHCl and FR) are distributed in roots, whips and stems, while two high-mobility/-toxicity Pb species (FE and FW) in leaves. The conversion of Pb to low-toxicity/-migration is a Pb-detoxification strategy in roots, whips and stems but not in leaves. Besides, the new/old roots and leaves can alleviate Pb damage through the synthesis of non-protein thiol, glutathione and phytochelatins. Among these, phytochelatins play a leading role in the detoxification in new/old roots, while glutathione is in new/old leaves. This study provides the first comprehensive evidence regarding the different strategies for Pb detoxification in dwarf bamboo tissues from physiological to cellular level, supporting that this plant could be rehabilitated for phytoremediation in Pb-contaminated media.

Effects of shade stress on turfgrasses morphophysiology and rhizosphere soil bacterial communities

BACKGROUND

The shade represents one of the major environmental limitations for turfgrass growth. Shade influences plant growth and alters plant metabolism, yet little is known about how shade affects the structure of rhizosphere soil microbial communities and the role of soil microorganisms in plant shade responses. In this study, a glasshouse experiment was conducted to examine the impact of shade on the growth and photosynthetic capacity of two contrasting shade-tolerant turfgrasses, shade-tolerant dwarf lilyturf (Ophiopogon japonicus, OJ) and shade-intolerant perennial turf-type ryegrass (Lolium perenne, LP). We also examined soil-plant feedback effects on shade tolerance in the two turfgrass genotypes. The composition of the soil bacterial community was assayed using high-throughput sequencing.

RESULTS

OJ maintained higher photosynthetic capacity and root growth than LP under shade stress, thus OJ was found to be more shade-tolerant than LP. Shade-intolerant LP responded better to both shade and soil microbes than shade-tolerant OJ. The shade and live soil decreased LP growth, but increased biomass allocation to shoots in the live soil. The plant shade response index of LP is higher in live soil than sterile soil, driven by weakened soil-plant feedback under shade stress. In contrast, there was no difference in these values for OJ under similar shade and soil treatments. Shade stress had little impact on the diversity of the OJ and the LP bacterial communities, but instead impacted their composition. The OJ soil bacterial communities were mostly composed of Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria. Further pairwise fitting analysis showed that a positive correlation of shade-tolerance in two turfgrasses and their bacterial community compositions. Several soil properties (NO₃^--N, NH₄⁺-N, AK) showed a tight coupling with several major bacterial communities under shade stress. Moreover, OJ shared core bacterial taxa known to promote plant growth and confer tolerance to shade stress, which suggests common principles underpinning OJ-microbe interactions.

CONCLUSION

Soil microorganisms mediate plant responses to shade stress via plant-soil feedback and shade-induced change in the rhizosphere soil bacterial community structure for OJ and LP plants. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding plant-soil interactions and their role in the mechanisms underlying shade tolerance in shade-tolerant turfgrasses.

Individual Cryptomeria fortunei Hooibrenk Clones Show Varying Degrees of Chilling Stress Resistance

Low temperature (LT) is an important abiotic factor affecting plant survival, growth and distribution. The response of Cryptomeria fortunei (Chinese cedar) to LT is not well known, limiting its application in production and ornamental value. In this study, we first screened ten clones (#3, #25, #32, #42, #54, #57, #68, #66, #74, #X1), originating from five different locations in China, for their degrees of cold resistance. We then selected the two showing the highest (#32) and lowest (#42) cold resistance to see the physiological and morphological response of different cold-resistant C. fortunei clones to LT. We found that the electrolyte leakage of all ten clones increased strongly between 0 and −8 °C, while below −8 or between 4 and 0 °C did not yield additional increases. Under cold stress, clones #32 and #42 showed different degrees of needle browning. From 25 to −20 °C, maximum and effective quantum yields of photosystem II (Fv/Fm and YII) and photochemical and non-photochemical quenching (qP and NPQ) decreased continuously in two clones with decreasing temperature, where #42 was more strongly affected compared with #32. The chlorophyll content first decreased significantly to the lowest from 25 to −12 °C, then increased significantly at −16/−20 °C compared with −12 °C. We observed changes in needle cellular ultrastructure at −8 °C, with chloroplasts of #32 swelling, while those of #42 were destroyed. Correlation analysis indicated that needle browning and chlorophyll fluorescence were closely related to temperature, and cellular ultrastructure changed notably around semi-lethal temperature (LT50), which can be used as physiological indicators for the identification of cold resistance. We found a clear difference in cold tolerance between clones of #32 and #42, with #32 being more tolerant, which can be exploited in breeding programs. We conclude that strongly cold-resistant clones have more stable physiological states and a wider adaptability to LT compared with weak ones.

Identification of Soybean Seed Varieties Based on Hyperspectral Imaging Technology

Hyperspectral imaging is a nondestructive testing technology that integrates spectroscopy and iconology technologies, which enables us to quickly obtain both internal and external information of objects and identify crop seed varieties. First, the hyperspectral images of ten soybean seed varieties were collected and the reflectance was obtained. Savitzky-Golay smoothing (SG), first derivative (FD), standard normal variate (SNV), fast Fourier transform (FFT), Hilbert transform (HT), and multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) spectral reflectance pretreatment methods were used. Then, the feature wavelengths and feature information of the pretreated spectral reflectance data were extracted using competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), the successive projections algorithm (SPA), and principal component analysis (PCA). Finally, 5 classifiers, Bayes, support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), ensemble learning (EL), and artificial neural network (ANN), were used to identify seed varieties. The results showed that MSC-CARS-EL had the highest accuracy among the 90 combinations, with training set, test set, and 5-fold cross-validation accuracies of 100%, 100%, and 99.8%, respectively. Moreover, the contribution of spectral pretreatment to discrimination accuracy was higher than those of feature extraction and classifier selection. Pretreatment methods determined the range of the identification accuracy, feature-selective methods and classifiers only changed within this range. The experimental results provide a good reference for the identification of other crop seed varieties.

Physiological responses of Chlorella pyrenoidosa to 1-hexyl-3-methyl chloride ionic liquids with different cations

Ionic liquids (ILs) are massively used in multiple fields of industry, and consequently, they have entered the environment and become potential threats to the respective ecosystems. In this paper, the toxicity of two different cationic types of ILs (1-hexyl-3-methyl pyridine chloride ([C₆Py]Cl) and 1-hexyl-3-methyl imidazole chloride ([C₆MIM]Cl)) to Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa) was investigated. Growth inhibition increased with increasing ILs concentrations. C. pyrenoidosa showed a certain recovery at low ILs concentrations, the growth inhibition decreased from 6.13% to 1.57% of the control from 24 h to 96 h, respectively, in 0.5 mg/L [C₆MIM]Cl treatment. However, growth inhibition was negatively related with exposure time at high concentrations, and the strongest toxic effects were observed after 48 h. The IC₅₀ values (half inhibitory concentration) were 8.47, 6.65, 6.91 and 7.11 mg/L of [C₆MIM]Cl, respectively, in 24, 48, 72, and 96 h, and were 9.05, 6.83, 7.79 and 8.14 mg/L of [C₆Py]Cl, respectively. Chlorophyll content declined with higher concentrations of the ILs. The values of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters: the maximum effective quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) (F_v/F_m), maximum quantum yield in PSII (F_v/F₀), and photosynthetic efficiency in PSII (Y(II)), decreased, whereas the minimal fluorescence (F₀) increased following the ILs treatment, indicating damage to the photosystem II. [C₆MIM]Cl and [C₆Py]Cl caused deformation of algae cells, plasmolysis, and damage of the cell membrane and cell wall, and affected organelle structure. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentrations increased with higher ILs concentrations from, and superoxide dismutase and catalase activity first increased and then decreased, indicating that the antioxidant defense system was activated to counteract ROS. ROS was the main stress in C. pyrenoidosa induced by ILs, and compared with [C₆Py]Cl, [C₆MIM]Cl were more toxic to C. pyrenoidosa.

Physiological and antioxidative responses to GO/PANI nanocomposite in intact and demucilaged seeds and young seedlings of Salvia mirzayanii

The current study aimed to investigate the impacts of different concentrations of GO/PANI nanocomposites (25, 50 and 100 mg L^-1), in comparison with GO and PANI, on seed germination behaviors, morpho-physiological and biochemical traits in intact (mucilaginous) and demucilaged seeds, and young seedlings of the medicinal plant Salvia mirzayanii. Upon exposure to GO, seed germination was delayed and reduced, and growth attributes (root and shoot length, shoot fresh weight, and total chlorophyll content) declined, all of which could be attributed to the reductions in water uptake and oxidative stress particularly in demucilaged seeds. A hormetic dose-dependent response was observed for the growth traits in both intact and demucilaged seedlings upon exposure to GO/PANI concentrations, i.e. low-concentration stimulation and high-concentration repression. Elevated levels of H₂O₂ in shoot tissue of the seedlings exposed to GO and high concentration of GO/PANI, in comparison with those exposed to low levels of GO/PANI and control, were linked with the activities of the antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT, POD, and total phenolics. Overall, the results showed high toxicity of GO on germination and early growth of S. mirzayani that was more evident in demucilaged seedlings, whereas GO/PANI stimulated germination, and the effects on seedling growth were stimulatory or inhibitory depending on the application dose and presence of mucilage. Furthermore, the capacity of GO/PANI nanocomposites to improve germination and cause a regular porosity pattern in roots accompanied by improved water uptake and early establishment of S. mirzayanii propose potential implications of GO/PANI nanocomposites for seeds/plants in drought-prone ecosystems.

Supplementation with plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) alleviates cadmium toxicity in Solanum lycopersicum by modulating the expression of secondary metabolites

The current study evaluated the synergistic role of Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia gladioli on different physiological, biochemical and molecular activities of 10-days old Solanum lycopersicum seedlings under Cd stress. Cd toxicity altered the levels of phenolic compounds (total phenols (30.2%), flavonoids (92.7%), anthocyanin (59.5%), polyphenols (368.7%)), osmolytes (total osmolytes (10.3%), total carbohydrates (94%), reducing sugars (64.5%), trehalose (112.5%), glycine betaine (59%), proline (54.8%), and free amino acids (63%)), and organic acids in S. lycopersicum seedlings. Inoculation of P. aeruginosa and B. gladioli alleviated Cd-induced toxicity, which was manifested through enhanced phenolic compound levels and osmolytes. Additionally, the levels of low molecular weight organic acids (fumaric acid, malic acid, succinic acid, and citric acid) were also elevated. The expression of genes encoding enzymes for phenols and organic acid metabolism were also studied to be modulated that included CHS (chalcone synthase; 138.4%), PAL (phenylalanine ammonia lyase; 206.7%), CS (citrate synthase; 61.3%), SUCLG1 (succinyl Co-A ligase; 33.6%), SDH (succinate dehydrogenase; 23.2%), FH (fumarate hydratase; 12.4%), and MS (malate synthase; 41.2%) and found to be upregulated in seedlings inoculated independently with P. aeruginosa and B. gladioli. The results provide insights into the role of micro-organisms in alleviating Cd-induced physiological damage by altering levels of different metabolites.

Effects of simulated N deposition on photosynthesis and productivity of key plants from different functional groups of alpine meadow on Qinghai-Tibetan plateau

Nitrogen (N) deposition may alter physiological process of plants in grassland ecosystem. However, little is known about the response mechanism of individual plants in alpine regions to N deposition. We conducted a field experiment, and three treatments including 0 kg Nha^-1year^-1 (CK), 8 kgNha^-1year^-1 (Low N), and 72 kg N ha^-1 year^-1 (High N) were established to simulate N deposition in alpine meadow of Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. Our objectives were to determine the influence of N deposition on photosynthesis of different functional types of herbage species in alpine meadow, and finally characterize the links of plant productivity and photosynthesis with soil nutrients. The results showed that responses of alpine plants were species-specific under N deposition. Compared with grass species Agropyron cristatum and forb species Thalictrum aquilegifolium, the sedge species Carex melanantha was much more sensitive to N deposition; a lower N load (8 kgNha^-1year^-1) can cause a negative effect on its photosynthesis and productivity. Additionally, N deposition can promote plant N uptake and significantly decreased the C (carbon)/N (nitrogen) ratio. Compared with CK and low N deposition, high N deposition inhibited the photosynthesis and growth of the forb species Thalictrum aquilegifolium and sedge species Carex melanantha. In all three functional types of herbage species, the grass species A. cristatum tended to show a much higher photosynthetic capacity and better growth potential; thus, suggesting that grass species A. cristatum will be a more adaptative alpine plants under N deposition. Our findings suggested that plant photosynthetic responses to N deposition were species-specific, low N deposition was not beneficial for all the herbage species, and N deposition may change plant composition by the differential photosynthetic responses among species in alpine grassland. Plant composition shift to grass-dorminant in alpine regions might be attributed to a much higher photosynthetic potential and N use efficiency of grass species.

The paradox in accumulation behavior of cadmium and selenium at different planting times in rice

The synergistic effects of trace elements selenium (Se) and cadmium (Cd) are well known. But the reasons for the trending accumulation behavior in both trace elements are under debate in the scientific community. The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the impact of heat units on the accumulation behavior in two environments. Se and Cd were applied in three groups (T₀; 0:0, T₁; 0.4:1, T₂; 1:2) mg kg^-1. As the time of planting and heat units consumed by the crop to attain its physiological maturity appears to be different. The sunlight may contribute as an important manipulating factor for the accumulation of heavy metals in the plant. The results of the present study indicated that the behavior in the accumulation pattern of both elements appears to be distinct in the same material. The increased fertilizer treatment in soil bulk linearly increased the metal contents in rice grain. The studies between different plant parts disclosed panicle as the primary reservoir for Se and Cd accumulation. The plant sown earlier accumulates more Se than Cd while the plants uptake more Cd when sown 1 month later. The plant completes the critical developmental phases (tillering, heading, and flowering) within 20-30 days interval depending on the variety. But the late-sown plants complete these transitional phases within 9-10 days interval ultimately result in less utilization of heat units. These quick transitional changes may lead to the uptake of an ample amount of Cd contents in rice grain even at a low level of Cd stress (1 and 2 mg kg^-1), making rice unsafe for edible purposes. Selection of the optimal bands of first-derivative fluorescence characteristics for leaf nitrogen concentration estimation

Laser-induced fluorescence technology provides a nondestructive and rapid method for monitoring leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC) based on its optical characteristics. Crop growth status can be efficiently diagnosed and quality evaluated by monitoring LNC. In this study, the first-derivative fluorescence spectrum (FDFS) was proposed and calculated based on the fluorescence spectra excited by 355, 460, and 556 nm excitation lights for rice LNC estimation. Then, the performance of each band FDFS characteristics and the FDFS ratio for LNC estimation were comprehensively discussed using principal component analysis and backpropagation neural network (BPNN). We analyzed the number of FDFS characteristics' influence on the accuracy of LNC monitoring. Results showed that R² does not clearly improve for the LNC monitoring based on the BPNN model when the number of extracted FDFS features exceeds 4 or 5. Therefore, the FDFS optimal band combination of different excitation light wavelengths mentioned was selected for LNC monitoring. The selected band combinations contained the majority of FDFS characteristics and could effectively be applied in monitoring LNC (for 355, 460, and 556 nm excitation lights, with R² of 0.764, 0.625, and 0.738, respectively) based on the BPNN model.
