Analytical methods for the determination of endocrine disrupting chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products: A review

The exposure to UV filters: Prevalence, effects, possible molecular mechanisms of action and interactions within mixtures

Substances that can absorb sunlight and harmful UV radiation such as organic UV filters are widely used in cosmetics and other personal care products. Since humans use a wide variety of chemicals for multiple purposes it is common for UV filters to co-occur with other substances either in human originating specimens or in the environment. There is increasing interest in understanding such co-occurrence in form of potential synergy, antagonist, or additive effects of biological systems. This review focuses on the collection of data about the simultaneous occurrence of UV filters oxybenzone (OXYB), ethylexyl-methoxycinnamate (EMC) and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC) as well as other classes of chemicals (such as pesticides, bisphenols, and parabens) to understand better any such interactions considering synergy, additive effect and antagonism. Our analysis identified >20 different confirmed synergies in 11 papers involving 16 compounds. We also highlight pathways (such as transcriptional activation of estrogen receptor, promotion of estradiol synthesis, hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, and upregulation of thyroid-hormone synthesis) and proteins (such as Membrane Associated Progesterone Receptor (MAPR), cytochrome P450, and heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70)) that can act as important key nodes for such potential interactions. This article aims to provide insight into the molecular mechanisms on how commonly used UV filters act and may interact with other chemicals.

Study on the mechanism and degradation behavior of Encifer adhaerens DNM-S1 capturing dimethyl phthalate

The global concern surrounding pollution caused by phthalates is escalating, with dimethyl phthalate (DMP) emerging as one of the most prevalent contaminants within the phthalates (PAEs) category. Although the biodegradation of DMP is considered both safe and efficient, its underlying degradation mechanism is not yet fully elucidated, and the degradation performance can be somewhat inconsistent. To address this issue, our study isolated a DMP-degrading bacterium (DNM-S1) from a vegetable greenhouse. The resulting data revealed that DNM-S1 exhibited a remarkable degradation performance, successfully degrading 84.98% of a 2000 mg L-1 DMP solution within 72 h. Remarkably, it achieved complete degradation of a 50 mg L-1 DMP solution within just 3 h. DMP degradation by DNM-S1 was also found to be efficient even under low-temperature conditions (10 °C). Our research further indicates that DNM-S1 is capable of capturing DMP through the ester bond in the bacterium's cell wall fatty acids, forming hydrogen bonds through hydrophobic interactions. The DMP was then transported into the DNM-S1 protoplasm using an active transport mechanism. Interestingly, the secondary metabolites of DNM-S1 contained natural carotenoids, which could potentially counteract the damaging effects of PAEs on cell membrane permeability. In summary, these findings highlight the potential of DNM-S1 in addressing PAEs pollution and provide new insights into the metabolic mechanism of PAEs degradation.

Exposure characteristics and cumulative risk assessment of bisphenol A and its substitutes: the Taiwan environmental survey for toxicants 2013

Introduction

Ever since the use of bisphenol A (BPA) has been restricted, concerns have been raised regarding the use of its substitutes, such as bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF). Meanwhile, the EU European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued the new tolerable daily intake (TDI) after the latest re-risk assessment for BPA, which enforced the need for cumulative risk assessment in the population. This study was conducted to identify BPA and its substitute's exposure characteristics of the general Taiwanese population and estimate the cumulative risk of bisphenol exposure.

Methods

Urine samples (N = 366 [adult, 271; minor, 95]) were collected from individuals who participated in the Taiwan Environmental Survey for Toxicants 2013. The samples were analyzed for BPA, BPS, and BPF through ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Daily intake (DI) levels were calculated for each bisphenol. Hazard quotients (HQs) were calculated with the consideration of tolerable DI and a reference dose. Additionally, hazard index (HI; sum of HQs for each bisphenol) values were calculated.

Results

Our study found that the median level of BPA was significantly higher in adults (9.63 μg/g creatinine) than in minors (6.63 μg/g creatinine) (p < 0.001). The DI of BPS was higher in female (0.69 ng/kg/day) than in male (0.49 ng/kg/day); however, the DIs of BPF and BPS were higher in boys (1.15 and 0.26 ng/kg/day, respectively) than in girls (0.57 and 0.20 ng/kg/day, respectively). Most HI values exceeded 1 (99% of the participants) after EFSA re-establish the TDI of BPA.

Discussion

Our study revealed that the exposure profiles and risk of BPA and its substitute in Taiwanese varied by age and sex. Additionally, the exposure risk of BPA was deemed unacceptable in Taiwan according to new EFSA regulations, and food contamination could be the possible source of exposure. We suggest that the risk of exposure to BPA and its substitutes in most human biomonitoring studies should be reassessed based on new scientific evidence.

Target and Suspect Screening for Organic Additives in Six Classifications of Personal Care Products Using Liquid Chromatography-High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Personal care products (PCPs) are integral components of daily human existence, including a large number of chemicals intentionally added for functional attributes (e.g., preservatives and fragrances) or unintentionally present, such as plasticizers. This investigation aimed to optimize the methodology for target and suspect screening via liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry, focusing on nine prevalent organic additives (comprising bisphenols A, F, and S, methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butylparaben, 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one, and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid). A total of 50 high-selling PCPs were purchased from the local online market as samples. In detail, PCP samples were classified into body washes, shampoos, hair conditioners, facial cleansers, body lotions, and moisture creams. For calibration, the quality assurance and quality control results demonstrated a coefficient of determination (R2) surpassing 0.999, with detection and quantification limits ranging from 2.5 to 100.0 ng/g. For recovery experiments, replicate recoveries (n = 5) ranged from 61 to 134%. In purchased PCP samples, five of the nine target compounds were detected via a target screening. Methylparaben exhibited the highest concentration (7860 mg/kg) in a facial cleanser, which is known as an endocrine-disrupting chemical. A total of 248 suspects of organic additives were screened in PCPs, leading to a tentative identification of 9. Confirmation (confidence level 1) via reference standards was achieved for three suspects, while six were tentatively identified with a confidence level of 2. This two-step extraction methodology utilizing methyl tert-butyl ether and isopropyl alcohol enabled simultaneous analysis of diverse chemical groups with distinct properties.

Effects of a TAML catalyst on mice exposed during pregnancy and lactation

Tetra-amido macrocyclic ligands (TAMLs) are catalysts designed to mimic endogenous peroxidases that can degrade pollutants. Before TAMLs gain widespread use, it is first important to determine if they have endocrine disrupting properties. In this study, we evaluated the effects of the iron TAML, NT7, on hormone-sensitive outcomes in mice exposed during pregnancy and lactation, and on their litters prior to weaning. We administered NT7 at one of three doses to mice via drinking water prior to and then throughout pregnancy and lactation. Two hormonally active pharmaceuticals, ethinyl estradiol (EE2) and flutamide (FLUT), a known estrogen receptor agonist and androgen receptor antagonist, respectively, were also included. In the females, we measured pre- and post-parturition weight, length of pregnancy, organ weights at necropsy, and morphology of the mammary gland at the end of the lactational period. We also quantified maternal behaviors at three stages of lactation. For the offspring, we measured litter size, litter weights, and the achievement of other developmental milestones. We observed only one statistically significant effect of NT7, a decrease in the percentage of pups with ear opening at postnatal day 5. This contrasts with the numerous effects of EE2 on both the mother and the litter, as well as several modest effects of FLUT. The approach taken in this study could provide guidance for future studies that aim to evaluate novel compounds for endocrine disrupting properties.

Bioprospecting photosynthetic microorganisms for the removal of endocrine disruptor compounds

Endocrine disruption compounds can be found in various daily products, like pesticides, along with cosmetic and pharmaceutical commodities. Moreover, occurrence of EDCs in the wastewater alarms the urgency for their removal before discharge owing to the harmful effect for the environment and human health. Compared to implementation of physical and chemical strategies, cultivation of photosynthetic microorganisms has been acknowledged for their high efficiency and eco-friendly process in EDCs removal along with accumulation of valuable byproducts. During the process, photosynthetic microorganisms remove EDCs via photodegradation, bio-adsorption, -accumulation, and -degradation. Regarding their high tolerance in extreme environment, photosynthetic microorganisms have high feasibility for implementation in wastewater treatment plant. However, several considerations are critical for their scaling up process. This review discussed the potency of EDCs removal by photosynthetic microorganisms and focused on the efficiency, mechanism, challenge, along with the prospect. Details on the mechanism's pathway, accumulation of valuable byproducts, and recent progress in scaling up and application in real wastewater were also projected in this review.

Quantification of parabens in marine fish samples by a rapid, simple, effective sample preparation method

Parabens (p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters) commonly used preservatives (in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and foods) can pose potential effects on environmental health. In this study, seven parabens were quantified in marine fish samples using an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (UHPLC-MS/MS) system. Parabens in the fish samples were extracted and purified by a rapid, simple, and effective procedure comprising sample homogenization with solvent, solid-phase extraction clean-up, and solvent evaporation. Results demonstrated that the recoveries of seven compounds (with relative standard deviation < 15%) were 88-103% in matrix-spike samples and 86-105% in surrogate standards. The method detection limits and method quantification limits of seven parabens were 0.015-0.030 and 0.045-0.090 ng/g-ww (wet weight), respectively. The optimized method was applied to measure the concentration of parabens in the 37 marine fish samples collected from Vietnam coastal waters. The concentration ranges of seven parabens found in round scad and greater lizardfish samples were 6.82-25.3 ng/g ww and 6.21-17.2 ng/g-ww, respectively. Among parabens, methylparaben accounted for the highest contribution in both fish species (43.2 and 44.9%, respectively). Based on the measured concentrations of parabens in marine fish samples, the estimated daily intake was calculated for children and adults with the corresponding values of 0.0477 µg/kg/day and 0.0119 µg/kg/day, respectively. However, the presence of parabens in Vietnamese marine fish may not pose a significant risk to human health.

Deep eutectic solvents for the determination of endocrine disrupting chemicals

The harmful effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) to humans and other organisms in the environment have been well established over the years, and more studies are ongoing to classify other chemicals that have the potential to alter or disrupt the regular function of the endocrine system. In addition to toxicological studies, analytical detection systems are progressively being improved to facilitate accurate determination of EDCs in biological, environmental and food samples. Recent microextraction methods have focused on the use of green chemicals that are safe for analytical applications, and present very low or no toxicity upon disposal. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as one of the viable alternatives to the conventional hazardous solvents, and their unique properties make them very useful in different applications. Notably, the use of renewable sources to prepare DESs leads to highly biodegradable products that mitigate negative ecological impacts. This review presents an overview of both organic and inorganic EDCs and their ramifications on human health. It also presents the fundamental principles of liquid phase and solid phase microextraction methods, and gives a comprehensive account of the use of DESs for the determination of EDCs in various samples.

Diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP)-induced male germ cell toxicity and its alleviation approach

Diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) is a commonly used plasticizer in manufacturing consumer and industrial products to improve flexibility and durability. Despite of the numerous studies, however, the direct mechanism underlying the male reproductive damage of DiBP is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the male germ cell toxicity of DiBP using GC-1 spermatogonia (spg) cells. Our results indicated that DiBP exposure causes oxidative stress and apoptosis in GC-1 spg cells. In addition, DiBP-derived autophagy activation and down-regulation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)-AKT and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathways further inhibited GC-1 spg cell proliferation, indicating that DiBP can instigate male germ cell toxicity by targeting several pathways. Importantly, a combined treatment of parthenolide, N-acetylcysteine, and 3-methyladenine significantly reduced DiBP-induced male germ cell toxicity and restored proliferation. Taken together, the results of this study can provide valuable information to the existing literature by enhancing the understanding of single phthalate DiBP-derived male germ cell toxicity and the therapeutic interventions that can mitigate DiBP damage.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals in Vietnamese marine fish: Occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment

The release of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) into the aquatic environment, specifically the oceans, is increasing, leading to adverse effects on the marine ecosystem. Using optimized QuEChERS extraction methods, the study created the first contamination profiles of 44 EDCs, including organic ultraviolet compounds, pharmaceutically active compounds, hormones, and phthalate esters, in 114 fish muscle samples from five species collected along the Vietnamese coast. The study found that largehead hairtail exhibited the highest total EDCs at 208.3 ng g-1 lipid weight (lw), while Indian catfish displayed the lowest concentration at 105.5 ng g-1 lw. Besides, the study observed notable variations in the total EDCs across distinct fish species. This study hypothesized that the marine economic characteristics of each research location have a significant role in shaping the pollution profile of EDCs found in fish specimens taken from the corresponding area. As a result, a notable disparity in the composition of organic ultraviolet compounds has been observed among the three regions of North, Central, and South Vietnam (Mann-Whitney U test, p < 0.05). Despite these findings, EDC-contaminated fish did not pose any health risks to Vietnam's coastal population.

Multi-class analysis of 100 drug residues in cosmetics using high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry

Cosmetics are an important aspect of the lives of many people. With an increasing demand for cosmetics, consumers pay more attention to their efficacy and composition. To improve their efficacy, prohibited substances, such as hormones, glucocorticoids, antibiotics, antifungals and antihistamines, may be added to cosmetics. We developed a rapid method for the multi-class analysis of drug residues in toner and lotion cosmetic samples using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-Q-TOF-HRMS). The primary variables in the extraction and purification steps were studied to minimize the interference of the sample matrix. The non-information-dependent sequential window acquisition of all theoretical fragment ion spectra (SWATH®) mode was used to improve the data acquisition efficiency. The secondary product ion peak areas were used for quantification to obtain a satisfactory matrix effects. The validation experiments confirmed that the developed method exhibited good linearity (5-200 ng/L) with correlation coefficients (R) ≥ 0.9902. Our developed method was then successfully applied to 92 real cosmetic samples. The calibration curve established by this method can be used for retrospective quantitative analysis over long durations without re-calibration. This method is efficient and suitable for screening and controlling multi-class prohibited substances in the cosmetics industry to reduce potential risks.

Endocrine Disruptors: Focus on the Adrenal Cortex

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous substances known to interfere with endocrine homeostasis and promote adverse health outcomes. Their impact on the adrenal cortex, corticosteroids and their physiological role in the organism has not yet been sufficiently elucidated. In this review, we collect experimental and epidemiological evidence on adrenal disruption by relevant endocrine disruptors. In vitro data suggest significant alterations of gene expression, cell signalling, steroid production, steroid distribution, and action. Additionally, morphological studies revealed disturbances in tissue organization and development, local inflammation, and zone-specific hyperplasia. Finally, endocrine circuits, such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, might be affected by EDCs. Many questions regarding the detection of steroidogenesis disruption and the effects of combined toxicity remain unanswered. Not only due to the diverse mode of action of adrenal steroids and their implication in many common diseases, there is no doubt that further research on endocrine disruption of the adrenocortical system is needed.

Relationship between exposure to parabens and benzophenones and prostate cancer risk in the EPIC-Spain cohort

The etiology of prostate cancer is not fully elucidated. Among environmental risk factors, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) deserve special mention, as they alter metabolic pathways involved in hormone-dependent cancers. Epidemiological evidence assessing the carcinogenicity of EDCs is scarce. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between exposure to parabens and benzophenones and prostate cancer risk. We conducted a case-cohort study nested within the EPIC-Spain prospective multi-center cohort. Study population comprised 1,838 sub-cohort participants and 467 non-sub-cohort prostate cancer cases. Serum concentrations of four parabens and two benzophenones were assessed at recruitment. Covariates included age, physical activity, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index, educational level and diabetes. Borgan II weighted Cox proportional hazard models stratified by study center were applied. Median follow-up time was 18.6 years (range = 1.0-21.7 years). Most sub-cohort participants reached primary education at most (65.5%), were overweight (57.7%) and had a low level of physical activity (51.3%). Detection percentages varied widely, being lowest for butyl-paraben (11.3%) and highest for methyl-paraben (80.7%), which also showed the highest geometric mean (0.95 ng/ml). Cases showed significantly higher concentrations of methyl-paraben (p = 0.041) and propyl-paraben (p < 0.001). In the multivariable analysis, methyl-paraben - log-transformed (HR = 1.07; 95%CI = 1.01-1.12) and categorized into tertiles (HR = 1.60 for T3; 95%CI = 1.16-2.20) -, butyl-paraben - linear (HR = 1.19; 95%CI = 1.14-1.23) and log-transformed (HR = 1.17; 95%CI = 1.01-1.35) - and total parabens - log-transformed (HR = 1.09; 95%CI = 1.02-1.17) and categorized into tertiles (HR = 1.62 for T3; 95%CI = 1.10-2.40) - were associated with an increased prostate cancer risk. In this study, higher concentrations of methyl-, butyl-, and total parabens were positively associated with prostate cancer risk. Further research is warranted to confirm these findings.

Determination of polyfluoroalkyl substances in cosmetic products using dispersed liquid-liquid extraction coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS

Human exposure to polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) via cosmetics has been of increasing concern due to the tremendous detrimental health impacts of PFASs. Developing an effective method for extracting and determining PFASs in cosmetics is crucial in accurately assessing their corresponding human exposure risk. Herein, this study developed a new sample pre-treatment method to address the challenges posed by the variety and complexity of cosmetic matrices. Seventeen PFASs in cosmetic products, including 9 perfluoro carboxylic acids and 8 perfluorosulfonic acids, were simultaneously determined using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The whole pre-treatment process can be divided into three steps. In step 1, cosmetics with diverse matrix types can be effectively dispersed during extraction by using saturated sodium chloride-acetonitrile and saturated sodium chloride-tetrahydrofuran as extraction solvents. In step 2, the pre-purification step employs a potassium ferrocyanide-zinc acetate co-precipitant to remove high molecular weight interferents from the extraction solution, thereby enhancing the efficiency of solid-phase extraction (SPE). In step 3, WAX-SPE is utilized to further eliminate interferents from the extraction solution while concentrating the analytes, meeting the trace analysis requirements for PFASs in cosmetics. The method detection limits were 0.09-0.26 ng g-1. The recoveries ranged from 70.1% to 114.7%, with relative standard deviations in the range of 2.0-19.1%. The method was applied to cosmetic samples in the Guangzhou market, and the total concentration of PFASs ranged from 0 to 10.8 ng g-1. This method has strong anti-interference ability, good applicability, high sensitivity, and good reproducibility, making it suitable for the analysis and detection of perfluorinated acids in cosmetic samples. It provides technical support for cosmetics safety regulation.

Children ages one to four are disproportionally affected by chemical burns in a cross-sectional analysis of NEISS 2012-2021

BACKGROUND

Household cleaning and personal care products (HC&PCPs) are irreplaceable in most daily routines. However, data are sparse on chemical burns caused by HC&PCPs.

METHODS

We queried the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) from 2012 to 2021 to characterize chemical burns caused by HC&PCPs as well as the most common causative categories of HC&PCPs responsible for chemical burns.

RESULTS

We found 2729 total emergency department (ED) visits due to chemical burn injuries within the years 2012-2021 due to HC&PCPs. Chemical burns disproportionally affect children ages four and under, accounting for 36.4% of all patients. Within this subpopulation, boys were more frequently affected by chemical burns and the eyes were the most affected area. The most common HC&PCPs involved in chemical burns in individuals ages one to four were laundry soaps and detergents (22.0%) and bleaches (21.3%).

CONCLUSION

Children ages four and under are disproportionately affected by chemical burns due to non-intentional exposure of HC&PCPs, with laundry detergents and bleaches being the most common causative agents. Adequate storage of all HC&PCPs and improved parental supervision are paramount in preventing chemical burns in this age group.

Inline phase transition trapping-selective supercritical fluid extraction-supercritical fluid chromatography: A green and efficient integrated method for determining prohibited substances in cosmetics

BACKGROUND

Developing an environmentally friendly and efficient integrated analytical approach is a cutting-edge topic in current analytical science. Due to the unique properties of supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2), online supercritical fluid extraction-supercritical fluid chromatography (SFE-SFC) is developing rapidly and has been widely applied in many fields. However, it still faces several challenges such as peak broadening and matrix interference. In order to solve the problems, we developed an inline phase transition trapping-selective supercritical fluid extraction-supercritical fluid chromatography (PTT-SSFE-SFC)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) method in this study.

RESULTS

This method integrated extraction, purification, separation, and detection, which was applied to determine 114 prohibited substances in cosmetics within 33 min, covering ten categories. The PTT strategy trapped the extracts on the head of the column by transforming CO2 from a supercritical state to a gaseous state, preventing peak spreading and improving sensitivity. Several adsorbents were tested when analyzing aqueous samples to reduce matrix interference and absorb water. Compared with conventional online SFE-SFC, this method improved the matrix effects of 93 and 87 target substances in the toner and mask matrix, respectively. Because the integrated method reduced sample loss, it achieved high sensitivity with LODs ranging from 0.00104 μg L-1 to 3.09 μg L-1. Furthermore, compared with other reported green methods, the inline method showed advantages in automation, efficiency, sample amount, and waste volume.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

With the introduction of the PTT strategy and the adsorbent, the system obtained good peak shapes, high sensitivity, low matrix effect, and good recovery. Based on the results, inline PTT-SSFE-SFC-MS/MS as a green and efficient integrated method has great potential for analyzing low abundance and multiple categories of targets in complex samples.

Co-exposure to parabens and triclosan and associations with cognitive impairment in an elderly population from Shenzhen, China

Parabens and triclosan (TCS) have been extensively applied in personal care products (PCPs) as preservatives and antibacterial agents. However, their potentiality to disrupt the neurological system has induced increasing concern. The elderly population is at a higher risk of neurodegenerative disorder, although research on its association with PCP exposure remains scarce. Here, we measured the urinary levels of four parabens, TCS, and an oxidative stress marker among 540 participants from the Shenzhen aging-related disorder cohort during 2017-2018. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to assess the cognitive status of participants. Their demographic, dietary, and behavioral factors were collected via questionnaire survey. Among the four paraben analogs, the median concentration of methyl parabens (MeP) was the highest (Low-risk group: 1.21 ng/mL, High-risk group: 1.64 ng/mL). TCS and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) were detected in more than 90% of the samples. Weighted quantile sum regression and quantile-based g-computation showed that the combined effect of all analytes was positively associated with the level of 8-OHdG. BtP, EtP and MeP were identified as the major contributors to the joint effect. After stratification by gender, females exhibited more pronounced changes in urinary 8-OHdG level than males. However, the positive correlation between co-exposure to parabens and TCS and cognitive impairment was not significant (p > 0.05) in both models, which warrants investigation with the larger sample size.

Residual status and source analysis of phthalate esters in Ulungur Lake, China

Ulungur Lake is the largest lake in northern Xinjiang and undertakes important aquatic tasks. It is the No. 1 fishing ground in northern Xinjiang, and the problem of persistent organic pollution in the water has received much attention. However, there are few studies on phthalate esters (PAEs) in the water of Ulungur Lake. Understanding the pollution levels, distribution characteristics and sources of PAEs is of great significance for the protection and prevention of water. Fifteen sampling sites are established in Ulungur Lake to collect water samples during flood and dry periods, then seventeen PAEs are extracted from the water samples and purified by liquid-liquid extraction-solid-phase purification. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry is used to detect the pollution levels and distribution characteristics of the 17 PAEs and analyse their sources. Results show that the concentrations of PAEs in the dry and flood periods are 0.451-9.97 µg/L and 0.0490-6.38 µg/L, respectively. The concentration of ∑PAEs with time is characterised by the dry period > the flood period. The change in flow is the main reason for the diverse concentration distributions of PAEs in different periods. The concentration of ΣPAEs in the dry period is much lower on the side near the lake entrance of the Ulungur River and Irtysh River. In the dry period, PAEs mainly come from chemical production and the use of cosmetics and personal care products; in the flood period, they mainly come from chemical production. River input and atmospheric sedimentation are the main sources of PAEs in the lake.

Endocrine disrupting compounds in the baby's world - A harmful environment to the health of babies

Globally, there has been a significant increase in awareness of the adverse effects of chemicals with known or suspected endocrine-acting properties on human health. Human exposure to endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) mainly occurs by ingestion and to some extent by inhalation and dermal uptake. Although it is difficult to assess the full impact of human exposure to EDCs, it is well known that timing of exposure is of importance and therefore infants are more vulnerable to EDCs and are at greater risk compared to adults. In this regard, infant safety and assessment of associations between prenatal exposure to EDCs and growth during infancy and childhood has been received considerable attention in the last years. Hence, the purpose of this review is to provide a current update on the evidence from biomonitoring studies on the exposure of infants to EDCs and a comprehensive view of the uptake, the mechanisms of action and biotransformation in baby/human body. Analytical methods used and concentration levels of EDCs in different biological matrices (e.g., placenta, cord plasma, amniotic fluid, breast milk, urine, and blood of pregnant women) are also discussed. Finally, key issues and recommendations were provided to avoid hazardous exposure to these chemicals, taking into account family and lifestyle factors related to this exposure.

Content level and risk assessment of phthalate esters in surface water of Bosten Lake, China

Bosten Lake is the main fishing and grazing area in Xinjiang. The pollution of phthalate esters (PAEs) in water has attracted much attention, but limited research has been conducted on PAEs in Bosten Lake. The distribution of PAEs in fifteen sampling sites of surface water in the dry and flood seasons were investigated to explore the content level of PAEs in Bosten Lake, and the risk was evaluated. Seventeen PAEs were detected by GC-MS after liquid-liquid and solid-phase purification. Results showed that the content of ∑PAEs in the water during dry and flood seasons is ND-26.226 μg/L and ND-7.179 μg/L. The content of PAEs in the water of Bosten Lake is at a medium level. DBP and DIBP are the main PAEs. The content of PAEs is related to the physicochemical properties of water, and the physicochemical properties of water in dry season have a more serious impact on PAEs. PAEs in water mainly come from domestic pollution and chemical production. The results of health risk assessment indicate that PAEs in water do not pose a carcinogenic risk or a non carcinogenic risk to human, which can meet the conditions of Bosten Lake as a fishing ground and livestock base, but the pollution of PAEs cannot be ignored.

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals and Persistent Organic Pollutants in Infant Formulas and Baby Food: Legislation and Risk Assessments

Human milk is the healthiest option for newborns, although, under specific circumstances, infant formula is a precious alternative for feeding the baby. Except for the nutritional content, infant formulas and baby food must be pollutant-free. Thus, their composition is controlled by continuous monitoring and regulated by establishing upper limits and guideline values for safe exposure. Legislation differs worldwide, although there are standard policies and strategies for protecting vulnerable infants. This work presents current regulations and directives for restricting endocrine-disrupting chemicals and persistent organic pollutants in infant formulas. Risk assessment studies, which are limited, are necessary to depict exposure variations and assess the health risks for infants from dietary exposure to pollutants.

In vitro and in silico assessment of endocrine disrupting effects of food contaminants through pregnane X receptor

As a promiscuous xenobiotic receptor, pregnane X receptor (PXR) has been confirmed to participate in numerous physiological process. In addition to the conventional estrogen/androgen receptor, PXR also serves as an alternative target for environmental chemical contaminants. In this work, the PXR-mediated endocrine disrupting effects of typical food contaminants were explored. Firstly, the time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer assays confirmed the PXR binding affinities of 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, chlorpyrifos, bisphenol A, and zearalenone, with IC50 values ranging from 1.88 to 4284.00 nM. Then their PXR agonist activities were assessed by PXR-mediated CYP3A4 reporter gene assays. Subsequently, the regulation of gene expressions of PXR and its targets CYP3A4, UGT1A1, and MDR1 by these compounds was further investigated. Intriguingly, all the tested compounds interfered with these gene expressions, confirming their endocrine disrupting effects via PXR-mediated signaling. The compound-PXR-LBD binding interactions were explored by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations to unravel the structural basis of their PXR binding capacities. The weak intermolecular interactions are key players in stabilizing these compound-PXR-LBD complexes. During the simulation process, 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl remained stable while the other 5 compounds underwent relatively severe disturbances. In conclusion, these food contaminants might exhibit endocrine disrupting effects via PXR.

Do Synthetic Fragrances in Personal Care and Household Products Impact Indoor Air Quality and Pose Health Risks?

Fragrance compounds (synthetic fragrances or natural essential oils) comprise formulations of specific combinations of individual materials or mixtures. Natural or synthetic scents are core constituents of personal care and household products (PCHPs) that impart attractiveness to the olfactory perception and disguise the unpleasant odor of the formula components of PCHPs. Fragrance chemicals have beneficial properties that allow their use in aromatherapy. However, because fragrances and formula constituents of PCHPs are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), vulnerable populations are exposed daily to variable indoor concentrations of these chemicals. Fragrance molecules may trigger various acute and chronic pathological conditions because of repetitive human exposure to indoor environments at home and workplaces. The negative impact of fragrance chemicals on human health includes cutaneous, respiratory, and systemic effects (e.g., headaches, asthma attacks, breathing difficulties, cardiovascular and neurological problems) and distress in workplaces. Pathologies related to synthetic perfumes are associated with allergic reactions (e.g., cutaneous and pulmonary hypersensitivity) and potentially with the perturbation of the endocrine-immune-neural axis. The present review aims to critically call attention to odorant VOCs, particularly synthetic fragrances and associated formula components of PCHPs, potentially impacting indoor air quality and negatively affecting human health.

Presence of parabens in children's faeces. Optimization and validation of a new analytical method based on the use of ultrasound-assisted extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Due to their antimicrobial properties, parabens are a family of synthetic chemical compounds widely used as preservative additives in food and cosmetics. For this reason, humans are highly exposed to them. These substances are capable of altering the proper functioning of the endocrine system and are classified as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Traditionally, urine has been the typical matrix studied as an excretion route. However, faeces contain valuable information. In the present study, the presence of methyl-, ethyl-, isopropyl-, propyl-, isobutyl-, butyl- and phenylparaben in stool samples from children has been evaluated. A new analytical method has been optimised and validated. The method is based on the use of ultrasound-assisted extraction followed by clean-up of the extracts by dispersive solid phase extraction dSPE). Parabens were analysed by ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The matrix effect was evaluated and a significant effect was observed for all analytes. Therefore, calibration and validation were performed by addition of different concentrations of analytes to faecal blanks. The coefficient of determination (%R²) for calibration curves was higher than 98.9% in all cases. The limits of detection and quantification were between 0.2 and 0.4 and 0.6-1.0 ng g^-1 respectively. The recovery for accuracy assessment had values between 89.0% and 112.7% with an RSD of less than 15% in all cases. The method was successfully applied to 14 samples from children volunteers, 100% of which showed contamination by at least one of the analysed compounds.

Advances on Hormones in Cosmetics: Illegal Addition Status, Sample Preparation, and Detection Technology

Owing to the rapid development of the cosmetic industry, cosmetic safety has become the focus of consumers' attention. However, in order to achieve the desired effects in the short term, the illegal addition of hormones in cosmetics has emerged frequently, which could induce skin problems and even skin cancer after long-term use. Therefore, it is of great significance to master the illegal addition in cosmetics and effectively detect the hormones that may exist in cosmetics. In this review, we analyze the illegally added hormone types, detection values, and cosmetic types, as well as discuss the hormone risks in cosmetics for human beings, according to the data in unqualified cosmetics in China from 2017 to 2022. Results showed that although the frequency of adding hormones in cosmetics has declined, hormones are still the main prohibited substances in illegal cosmetics, especially facial masks. Because of the complex composition and the low concentration of hormones in cosmetics, it is necessary to combine efficient sample preparation technology with instrumental analysis. In order to give the readers a comprehensive overview of hormone analytical technologies in cosmetics, we summarize the advanced sample preparation techniques and commonly used detection techniques of hormones in cosmetics in the last decade (2012-2022). We found that ultrasound-assisted extraction, solid phase extraction, and microextraction coupled with chromatographic analysis are still the most widely used analytical technologies for hormones in cosmetics. Through the investigation of market status, the summary of sample pretreatment and detection technologies, as well as the discussion of their development trends in the future, our purpose is to provide a reference for the supervision of illegal hormone residues in cosmetics.

A novel method for the direct detection of light stabilizer Tinuvin 622 in polymer additives by gel permeation chromatography combined with multi-angle laser light scattering

Tinuvin 622, an oligomeric light stabilizer, is widely used in plastics to reduce light and heat induced degradation and extend their service life, therefore its detection is of great importance for quality control of plastic products. However, the classical analytical methods of Tinuvin 622, such as chromatography and mass spectrometry, are difficult to achieve direct qualitative and quantitative analysis, and simultaneously to obtain the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution information. Herein, we propose for the first time the combination of gel permeation chromatography with multi-angle laser light scattering as a simple and direct method to detect Tinuvin 622 in polymers and simultaneously to obtain its molecular weight distribution information. The linearity of the method was good in the concentration range of 0.1-5.0 mg/mL Tinuvin 622 with correlation coefficient (R² = 0.9999), and the recoveries of Tinuvin 622 at three addition levels ranged from 94.0% to 98.7%, with relative standard deviations of no more than 1.73%. The proposed method has been successfully used to detect Tinuvin 622 in actual samples of polymer additives. Compared with existing analytical methods, Tinuvin 622 has a single peak shape in our method, which is easy to identify and quantify accurately; more importantly, our method can simultaneously characterize the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of Tinuvin 622, which makes up for the shortcomings of other approaches and provides a new tool for quality monitoring of polymer additives.

Multi-magnetic center ionic liquids for dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction coupled with in-situ decomposition based back-extraction for the enrichment of parabens in beverage samples

In this paper, several new multi-magnetic center magnetic ionic liquids (MMILs) were prepared with paramagnetic component simultaneously contained in both the cation and anion and used as extractants to establish a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) approach followed by in-situ MMIL decomposition based back-extraction for the enrichment and determination of four parabens in beverages. The appropriate MMIL was selected by investigating the extraction performances of the obtained MMILs combined with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV), and some other experimental factors were explored. Under the optimized DLLME conditions, the four parabens exhibited coefficients of determination (R²) above 0.9987 in the linear range of 0.1-500 ng·mL^-1 for ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben and 0.2-500 ng·mL^-1 for methylparaben. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were respectively within 0.03-0.06 ng·mL^-1 and 0.1-0.2 ng·mL^-1, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) for intra-day and inter-day precision were below 10.8%. Moreover, the application of the developed MMIL-based DLLME method in beverage samples exhibited recoveries within 81.3%-112.1% with RSDs of 0.3%-13.1% at three different spiked levels.

Assessing the Effects of Ozonation on the Concentrations of Personal Care Products and Acute Toxicity in Sludges of Wastewater Treatment Plants

The aim of this study was to understand the distribution of the personal care products nonylphenol (NP), triclosan (TCS), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), and caffeine in the sludges from three wastewater treatment plants (WWTP-A, -B, and -C) in southern Taiwan. The four compounds were analyzed from activated sludge and dewatered sludge samples, and then the samples were treated with pressure-assisted ozonation under different conditions and removal efficiencies. All four target compounds were detected, especially NP, which was detected in the highest concentrations in the activated sludges of WWTP-A and dewatered sludges of WWTP-C at 17.19 ± 4.10 and 2.41 ± 1.93 µg/g, respectively. TCS was dominant in dewatered sludges from WWTP-B, and the highest detected concentration was 13.29 ± 6.36 µg/g. Removals of 70% and 90% were attained under 150 psi at 40 cycles for NP and TCS, respectively, with 5 min of ozonation reaction time, a solid/water ratio of 1:20, and 2% ozone concentration. Ecological risk quotients (RQs) were calculated by the ratios of the 10-day Hyalella azteca (freshwater amphipod) LC50 to the environmental concentrations of the target compounds. High RQs were found to be >10 for NP, TCS, and BP-3 in untreated sludges, resulting in significant ecological risks to aquatic organisms when the sludges are arbitrarily disposed. However, the toxic effects on Hyalella azteca were not significantly different among ozone sludge treatments. The reason for this may be related to the formation of toxic oxidation by-products and incomplete mineralization of organic compounds. This could also be true for unknown intermediates. The relatively high detection frequencies of these emerging compounds in WWTP sludges requires further applications and treatments.

Oestrogenic Activity in Girls with Signs of Precocious Puberty as Exposure Biomarker to Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals: A Pilot Study

The relationship between endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) exposure and Precocious Puberty (PP) was investigated in this pilot study, involving girls with signs of PP (P) and pre-pubertal girls (C). Risk factors for PP were assessed through questionnaires, while 17β-oestradiol (E2) levels and oestrogenic activity were quantified on sera. The oestrogenic activity, expressed as E2 equivalent concentration (EEQ), was applied as EDC exposure biomarker. Questionnaires showed a low EDC knowledge, a high EDC exposure, and a potential relationship between some habits at risk for EDC exposure and PP. EEQs were similar between C and P; however, they were significantly higher in girls living in an urban environment than in girls living in a rural environment, suggesting a potential higher EDC exposure in cities. The results of this pilot study highlighted the need to raise awareness on EDCs and can be considered a starting point to clarify the relationship between EDC exposure and PP.

A new magnetic ionic liquid based salting-out assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction for the determination of parabens in environmental water samples

In this study, a new magnetic ionic liquid (MIL) was designed and prepared, containing a magnetic cation from the ligand N,N-dimethyl biguanide (DMBG) complexing with magnetic center Co²⁺ and a bis-trifluoromethanesulfonimide (NTf₂^-) anion. Using the MIL as the extraction solvent, a salting-out assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (SA-DLLME) combined with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) was established for the enrichment and detection of four parabens in environmental water samples. The one-factor-at-a-time experiment was employed to optimize the conditions affecting the extraction efficiency. Under the optimized extraction conditions, the limits of quantification (LOQs) of the four target analytes ranged from 2.0 ng mL^-1 to 2.8 ng mL^-1, and the coefficients of determination (R²) were above 0.9996 in the linear range of 2.8-400 ng mL^-1. On the other hand, the method displayed good repeatability and accuracy with intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 2.1-13.0% and recoveries of 82.0-114.6%. The established method was applied to real samples with recoveries within 81.6-125.4%, and the results demonstrated that the method was practical.

Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals immunotoxicology induced by three organic UV filters in Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum)

Benzophenone-3 (BP-3), 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor (4-MBC) and 2-ethyl-hexyl-4-trimethoxycinnamate (EHMC) are commonly used organic ultraviolet (UV) filters and are frequently detected in water environments. In the present study, we studied the potential adverse impacts of UV filter exposures in Ruditapes philippinarum by investigating transcriptomic profiles and non-specific immune enzyme activities. Transcriptome analysis showed that more genes were differentially regulated in EHMC-treated group, and down-regulated genes (2009) were significantly more than up-regulated ones (410) at day 7. Function annotation revealed that pathways "immune system", "cell growth and death" and "infectious diseases" were significantly enriched. Generally, combined qPCR and biochemical analyses demonstrated that short-term exposure to low dose of UV filters could activate immune responses, whereas the immune system would be restrained after prolonged exposure. Taken together, the present study firstly demonstrated the immunotoxicology induced by BP-3, 4-MBC and EHMC on R. philippinarum, indicating their potential threats to the survival of marine bivalves.

Photocatalytic Treatment of Emerging Contaminants with Ag-Modified Titania—Is There a Risk Arising from the Degradation Products?

Bisphenol A, bisphenol S, and fluconazole are environmental contaminants widely found in surface waters because of their extensive usage and low biodegradability. Therefore, other methods are often considered for the removal of these compounds. The present study aims at their photodegradation with the use of UV light and three different catalysts, ZnO, TiO2, and Ag-TiO2. The results obtained show that photocatalytic removal of these compounds is also problematic and the use of catalysts, such as ZnO and TiO2, at increasing concentrations mostly leads to lower degradation of the tested compounds. The modification of TiO2 with silver increases the degradation of both bisphenols up to 100%, which was achieved in 60 min by bisphenol A and in as little as 10 min by bisphenol S. Nevertheless, the degradation of fluconazole remained at the same level, not exceeding 70% in 60 min, i.e., still much lower than expected. In addition, the degradation products of bisphenols show the hydroxylation and destruction of their phenolic rings, while no degradation products were found during the test with fluconazole. Although the potentially genotoxic bisphenol A degradation product was found, the acute toxicity of the formed compounds differs little in comparison to the parent bisphenols.

Association between exposure to a mixture of metals, parabens, and phthalates and fractional exhaled nitric oxide: A population-based study in US adults

The effects of environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) (e.g., phthalates) on fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in children have received much attention. However, few studies evaluated this relationship in adults, and the previous studies have considered only a unitary exposure or a set of similar exposures instead of mixed exposures, which contain complicated interactions. We aimed to evaluate simultaneously the relationship between three types of EDCs (six phthalate metabolites and two parabens in urine, two heavy metals in blood) and FeNO (as a continuous variable) in adults. Data of adults aged ≥20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2007-2012) were collected and analyzed. The generalized linear (GLM) regression model was used to explore the association of chemicals with FeNO. The combined effect of 10 chemicals on the overall association with FeNO was evaluated by the weighted quantile sum regression (WQS) model. In addition, The Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model was explored to investigate the interaction and joint effects of multiple chemicals with FeNO. Of the 3296 study participants ultimately included, among the GLMs, we found that mercury (Hg) (β = 0.84, 95%CI:0.32-1.36, FDR = 0.01) and methyl paraben (MPB) (β = 0.47, 95%CI:0.16-0.78, FDR = 0.015) were positively correlated with FeNO. In the WQS model, the combined effect of chemicals almost had a significantly positive association with FeNO and the top three contributors to the WQS index were Hg (40.2%), MECPP (22.1%), and MPB (19.3%). BKMR analysis showed that there may be interactions between MPB and Hg, Mono (carboxyoctyl) phthalate (MCOP) and Hg and the overall effect of the mixture showed a positive correlation with FeNO. In conclusion, our study strengthens the credibility of the view that EDCs can affect respiratory health. In the future, we should be particularly careful with products containing Hg, MECPP, MPB, and MEHP for the prevention of respiratory diseases.

PVP/CS/Phyllanthus emblica Nanofiber Membranes for Dry Facial Masks: Manufacturing Process and Evaluations

In the wake of increasing demands on skin health, we propose simple, natural, and safe dry facial masks that restrict melanin synthesis. Phyllanthus emblica (P. emblica) is made into powders via a low-temperature extraction and freeze-drying process to serve as a natural agent. Next, it is added to mixtures containing Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and Chitosan (CS), after which the blends are electrospun into PVP/CS/P. emblica nanofiber membrane dry facial masks using the electrospinning technique. The dry facial masks are evaluated using the calibration analysis method, extraction rate test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), release rate test, tyrosinase inhibition assay, biocompatibility test, and anti-inflammatory capacity test. Test results indicate that when the electrospinning mixture contains 29.0% P. emblica, the nanofibers have a diameter of ≤214.27 ± 74.51 nm and a water contact angle of 77.25 ± 2.21. P. emblica is completely released in twenty minutes, and the tyrosinase inhibition rate reaches 99.53 ± 0.45% and the cell activity ≥82.60 ± 1.30%. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory capacity test results suggest that dry facial masks confine inflammatory factors. PVP/CS/P. emblica nanofiber dry facial masks demonstrate excellent tyrosinase inhibition and are hydrophilic, biocompatible, and inflammation-free. The dry facial masks are a suitable material that is worthwhile exploring and applying to the cosmetic field.

Prospecting carbon-based nanomaterials for the treatment and degradation of endocrine-disrupting pollutants

The presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in water resources has significant negative implications for the environment. Traditional technologies implemented for water treatment are not completely efficient for removing EDCs from water. Therefore, research on sustainable remediation has been mainly directed to novel decontamination approaches including nano-remediation. This emerging technology employs engineered nanomaterials to clean up the environment quickly, efficiently, and sustainably. Thus, nanomaterials have contributed to a wide variety of remediation techniques like adsorption, filtration, coagulation/flocculation, and so on. Among the vast diversity of decontamination technologies catalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) outstand as simple, clean, and efficient alternatives. A vast diversity of catalysts has been developed demonstrating high efficiencies; however, the search for novel catalysts with enhanced performances continues. In this regard, nanomaterials used as nanocatalysts are exhibiting enhanced performances on AOPs due to their special nanostructures and larger specific surface areas. Therefore, in this review we summarize, compare, and discuss the recent advances on nanocatalysts, catalysts doped with metal-based nanomaterials, and catalysts doped with carbon-based nanomaterials on the degradation of EDCs. Finally, further research opportunities are identified and discussed to achieve the real application of nanomaterials to efficiently degrade EDCs from water resources.

Simultaneous determination of seven dimethylcyclosiloxanes in cosmetics of different formulation systems by gel permeation chromatography purification-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

鉴于当前化妆品中二甲基环硅氧烷的添加乱象,以及关于二甲基环硅氧烷在化妆品中安全风险评价的研究也未有实质性进展,因此建立适合不同配方体系化妆品中二甲基环硅氧烷的测定方法具有一定的理论和现实意义。基于此,建立了凝胶渗透色谱净化结合气相色谱-串联质谱测定不同配方体系化妆品中7种二甲基环硅氧烷的方法。方法采用乙酸乙酯-环己烷(1∶1, v/v)提取,凝胶渗透色谱净化,通过DB-5ms色谱柱(30.0 m×0.25 mm×0.25 μm)分离和气相色谱-串联质谱选择反应监测(SRM)模式进行确证和检测,以正十六烷为内标物内标法定量。分别对内标物、提取溶剂和净化方式的选择进行了优化。在最终确立的条件下,7种二甲基环硅氧烷在0.05~1.0 mg/L范围内线性良好,相关系数为0.994~0.998;方法的检出限(LOD, S/N=3)和定量限(LOQ, S/N=10)分别为0.04~0.08 mg/kg和0.12~0.24 mg/kg;针对不同配方体系的化妆品基质,进行了低、中、高3个添加水平的加标回收试验,目标物的加标回收率为85.3%~108.8%,相对标准偏差(RSD)为3.1%~9.4%。该方法操作简便,灵敏度高,重复性好,能够满足不同配方体系化妆品中7种二甲基环硅氧烷的测定要求。采用所建立的方法对市面上的化妆品进行检测,八甲基环四硅氧烷(D4)和十甲基环五硅氧烷(D5)均有不同程度的检出。该方法的建立将为我国化妆品中二甲基环硅氧烷的质量监督检查提供技术依据,有利于保障化妆品的安全,同时也为后续化妆品中二甲基环硅氧烷的健康安全风险评价提供了技术支撑。

Determination of phthalic acid esters and di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate in fish and squid using the ammonium formate version of the QuEChERS method combined with gas chromatography mass spectrometry

In the present study, the ammonium formate version of the QuEChERS method, considered highly advantageous in relation to instrument maintenance and other issues, was applied for the first time to extract a group of twelve phthalic acid esters (PAEs, i.e. dipropyl phthalate, DPP; diisobutyl phthalate, DIBP; dibutyl phthalate, DBP; diisopentyl phthalate, DIPP; di-n-pentyl phthalate, DNPP; dihexyl phthalate, DHP; butyl benzyl phthalate, BBP; dicyclohexyl phthalate, DCHP; di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, DEHP; di-n-octyl phthalate, DNOP; diisononyl phthalate, DINP; and diisodecyl phthalate, DIDP) and one adipate (di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate, DEHA) from two species of fish (Scomber colias and Katsuwonus pelamis) and one of squid (Loligo gahi). The method was validated in terms of linearity, trueness and matrix effects. Determination coefficients (R²) for matrix-matched calibration curves were higher than 0.99 in all cases, being the lowest calibration levels in the range 0.5-10 ng/g. Mean recovery values were between 70 and 117% with relative standard deviation values ≤20%. Matrix effects were soft (between -20 and +20%) for most analytes and matrices, except in squid samples, which was mostly medium with a moderate ion suppression. The analysis of 10 samples of each type showed the presence of DIBP, DBP and DEHP at concentrations up to 44.2 ± 2.1 ng/g of wet weight in some of the samples and species, still not representing concerning values when considering the daily intake of such species of seafood in the human diet (tolerable daily intake -TDI- values were not exceeded). Results demonstrated that the ammonium formate version of the QuEChERS method can be applied with success for the extraction and determination of the selected PAEs and DEHA in fish and squid samples.

CeO2 nanostructured electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous recognition of diethylstilbestrol and 17β-estradiol hormones

A new highly sensitive, selective, and inexpensive electrochemical method has been developed for simultaneously detecting diethylstilbestrol (DES) and 17β-estradiol (E2) in environmental samples (groundwater and lake water) using a graphite sensor modified by cerium oxide nanoparticles (CPE-CeO₂ NPs). The developed sensor and the materials used in its preparation were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The ab initio simulation was used to evaluate the adsorption energies between both DES and E2 with the surface of the sensor. The peak current of oxidation of both hormones showed two regions of linearity. The region of greatest sensitivity was observed for the linear range of 10 nM-100 nM. The detection and quantification limits for this concentration range were 0.8/2.6 nM and 1.3/4.3 nM for DES and E2, respectively. The analytical performance of the developed method showed high sensitivity, precision, repeatability, reproducibility, and selectivity. The CPE-CeO₂ NPs sensor was successfully applied to simultaneously detect DES and E2 in real samples with recovery levels above 98%.

Fetoplacental vasculature as a model to study human cardiovascular endocrine disruption

Increasing evidence has associated the exposure of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) with the cardiovascular (CV) system. This exposure is particularly problematic in a sensitive window of development, pregnancy. Pregnancy exposome can affect the overall health of the pregnancy by dramatic changes in vascular physiology and endocrine activity, increasing maternal susceptibility. Moreover, fetoplacental vascular function is generally altered, increasing the risk of developing pregnancy complications (including cardiovascular diseases, CVD) and predisposing the foetus to adverse health risks later in life. Thus, our review summarizes the existing literature on exposures to EDCs during pregnancy and adverse maternal health outcomes, focusing on the human placenta, vein, and umbilical artery associated with pregnancy complications. The purpose of this review is to highlight the role of fetoplacental vasculature as a model for the study of human cardiovascular endocrine disruption. Therefore, we emphasize that the placenta, together with the umbilical arteries and veins, allows a better characterization of the pregnant woman's exposome. Consequently, it contributes to the protection of the mother and foetus against CV disorders in life.

Recent Advances in Sample Preparation for Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Analysis

The use of cosmetics and personal care products is increasing worldwide. Their high matrix complexity, together with the wide range of products currently marketed under different forms imply a challenge for their analysis, most of them requiring a sample pre-treatment step before analysis. Classical sample preparation methodologies involve large amounts of organic solvents as well as multiple steps resulting in large time consumption. Therefore, in recent years, the trends have been moved towards the development of simple, sustainable, and environmentally friendly methodologies in two ways: (i) the miniaturization of conventional procedures allowing a reduction in the consumption of solvents and reagents; and (ii) the development and application of sorbent- and liquid-based microextraction technologies to obtain a high analyte enrichment, avoiding or significantly reducing the use of organic solvents. This review provides an overview of analytical methodology during the last ten years, placing special emphasis on sample preparation to analyse cosmetics and personal care products. The use of liquid–liquid and solid–liquid extraction (LLE, SLE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), solid-phase extraction (SPE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), matrix solid-phase extraction (MSPD), and liquid- and sorbent-based microextraction techniques will be reviewed. The most recent advances and future trends including the development of new materials and green solvents will be also addressed.

An Overview of the Analytical Methods for the Determination of Organic Ultraviolet Filters in Cosmetic Products and Human Samples

UV filters are a group of compounds commonly used in different cosmetic products to absorb UV radiation. They are classified into a variety of chemical groups, such as benzophenones, salicylates, benzotriazoles, cinnamates, p-aminobenzoates, triazines, camphor derivatives, etc. Different tests have shown that some of these chemicals are absorbed through the skin and metabolised or bioaccumulated. These processes can cause negative health effects, including mutagenic and cancerogenic ones. Due to the absence of official monitoring protocols, there is an increased number of analytical methods that enable the determination of those compounds in cosmetic samples to ensure user safety, as well as in biological fluids and tissues samples, to obtain more information regarding their behaviour in the human body. This review aimed to show and discuss the published studies concerning analytical methods for the determination of organic UV filters in cosmetic and biological samples. It focused on sample preparation, analytical techniques, and analytical performance (limit of detection, accuracy, and repeatability).
