Towards Food Security: Current State and Future Prospects of Agrobiotechnology

Significant lead isotope 'fractionation' in maize records plant lead uptake, transfer, and detoxification mechanisms

Lead isotope analysis is the main method to trace the sources and cycling of Pb in the biosphere system. The linchpin of such application hinges on the assumption that there is negligible or no biologically mediated isotopic fractionation of Pb occurs in the environment. However, recent measurements by high-precision multi-collector mass spectrometry revealed that biological isotope fractionation of heavy mass elements is a prevalent phenomenon. This study shows that compared with the Pb sources, the maize plant (Zea mays L.) organs exhibit a wider range of Pb isotope compositions and a depletion of radioactive Pb isotopes (206Pb, 207Pb, and 208Pb). Moreover, three independent studies consistently indicate that the 206Pb/207Pb ratio of maize organs varies as root/leaf > stem/grain, reflecting a continuous loss of light Pb isotopes during transportation. The conventional wisdom fails to account for these phenomena, suggesting that maize may undergo Pb isotope fractionation during the absorption and transportation of Pb. However, compared with other non-traditional metal isotopes, Pb isotope exhibits a more significant fractionation magnitude. We tentatively attribute this fractionation to the Pb tolerance mechanism of maize and its selective absorption of various forms of Pb, which requires further research to validate. Findings from this study mandate caution in future Pb source tracing in plants using Pb isotope methods and open up applications in using Pb isotopic fractionation to track Pb uptake and transfer pathways and decipher the associated detoxification mechanisms in plants.

Exogenous proline suppresses endogenous proline and proline-production genes but improves the salinity tolerance capacity of salt-sensitive rice by stimulating antioxidant mechanisms and photosynthesis

Salinity is a critical environmental stress factor that significantly reduces crop productivity and yield. A mutant B-type response regulator gene (hst1) has been shown to promote salinity tolerance in the YNU genotype. Previous studies on the hst1 gene showed a higher proline production capacity under salt stress. Using almost identical genetic backgrounded salt-tolerant (YNU) and salt-sensitive (Sister line) rice genotypes, we tested the function of proline in the hst1 gene salinity-tolerance mechanism by applying exogenous proline under control and salt-stress conditions. Morpho-physiological, biochemical, and molecular analysis of ST and SS plants was performed to clarify the salinity tolerance mechanism mediated by the exogenous proline. The ST and SS genotypes accumulated exogenous proline, and the ST genotype has higher proline levels than the SS genotype. However, exogenous proline improved salt tolerance only in the SS genotype. Exogenous proline promotes plant and root growth by stimulating photosynthetic pigments and photosynthesis. The exogenous proline has a reductive effect on MDA, and H2O2 protects plants against ROS. Interestingly, exogenous proline lowers Na+ and raises K+ accumulations under salt stress. In the SS genotype, exogenous proline increases the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and APX) to protect against salinity-induced damage. The exogenous proline application down-regulates proline-synthesis genes (OsP5CS1 and OsP5CR) and up-regulates proline-degradation genes. Also, exogenous proline increases the expression of the OsSalT and OsGRAS29 genes, improving salinity tolerance in the SS genotype. Our study has demonstrated that proline plays a significant role in conferring salt tolerance with the salinity-tolerance-related hst1 mechanisms.

The Effect of Different Thiamethoxam Concentrations on Riptortus pedestris Development and Fecundity

The stink bug, Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae), is a highly destructive pest that significantly damages legume crops in East and South Asia. Neonicotinoid insecticides containing thiamethoxam are widely used to control R. pedestris in soybean fields. However, the current knowledge on the impact of different thiamethoxam concentrations on R. pedestris growth and reproduction is lacking and insufficient. The present study investigated the effects of thiamethoxam on the biological traits of R. pedestris after treatment with LC10 (19.8 mg/L), LC20 (31.6 mg/L), LC30 (44.2 mg/L), LC40 (58.9 mg/L), and LC50 (77.0 mg/L) concentrations. These five thiamethoxam concentrations (LC10~LC50) reduced adult longevity and fecundity in the F1 generation females. Thiamethoxam treatment also significantly decreased the population trend index, intrinsic rate of increase, net reproductive rate, gross reproductive rate, and finite rate of increase and increased the mean generation time. These results show that thiamethoxam hinders and suppresses the development and growth of the F1 population of R. pedestris. Thiamethoxam is recommended for spray control during peak adult emergence, as it not only has a controlling effect on the parental generation but also a negative impact on the F1 generations.

Adoption of CRISPR-Cas for crop production: present status and future prospects

Background

Global food systems in recent years have been impacted by some harsh environmental challenges and excessive anthropogenic activities. The increasing levels of both biotic and abiotic stressors have led to a decline in food production, safety, and quality. This has also contributed to a low crop production rate and difficulty in meeting the requirements of the ever-growing population. Several biotic stresses have developed above natural resistance in crops coupled with alarming contamination rates. In particular, the multiple antibiotic resistance in bacteria and some other plant pathogens has been a hot topic over recent years since the food system is often exposed to contamination at each of the farm-to-fork stages. Therefore, a system that prioritizes the safety, quality, and availability of foods is needed to meet the health and dietary preferences of everyone at every time.

Methods

This review collected scattered information on food systems and proposes methods for plant disease management. Multiple databases were searched for relevant specialized literature in the field. Particular attention was placed on the genetic methods with special interest in the potentials of the Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) and Cas (CRISPR associated) proteins technology in food systems and security.

Results

The review reveals the approaches that have been developed to salvage the problem of food insecurity in an attempt to achieve sustainable agriculture. On crop plants, some systems tend towards either enhancing the systemic resistance or engineering resistant varieties against known pathogens. The CRISPR-Cas technology has become a popular tool for engineering desired genes in living organisms. This review discusses its impact and why it should be considered in the sustainable management, availability, and quality of food systems. Some important roles of CRISPR-Cas have been established concerning conventional and earlier genome editing methods for simultaneous modification of different agronomic traits in crops.

Conclusion

Despite the controversies over the safety of the CRISPR-Cas system, its importance has been evident in the engineering of disease- and drought-resistant crop varieties, the improvement of crop yield, and enhancement of food quality.

Smart and Sustainable Crop Protection: Design and Evaluation of a Novel α-Amylase-Responsive Nanopesticide for Effective Pest Control

In this study, an α-amylase-responsive controlled-release formulation was developed by capping polydopamine onto β-cyclodextrin-modified abamectin-loaded hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles. The prepared Aba@HMS@CD@PDA were subjected to characterization using various analytical techniques. The findings revealed that Aba@HMS@CD@PDA, featuring a loading rate of 18.8 wt %, displayed noteworthy release behavior of abamectin in the presence of α-amylase. In comparison to abamectin EC, Aba@HMS@CD@PDA displayed a significantly foliar affinity and improved rainfastness on lotus leaves. The results of field trail demonstrated a significantly higher control efficacy against Spodoptera litura Fabricius compared to abamectin EC at all concentrations after 7, 14, and 21 days of spaying, showcasing the remarkable persistence of Aba@HMS@CD@PDA. These results underscore the potential of Aba@HMS@CD@PDA as a novel and persistently effective strategy for sustainable on-demand crop protection. The application of nanopesticides can enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of pesticide utilization, contributing to more sustainable agricultural practices.

Analysis of drought and heat stress response genes in rice using co-expression network and differentially expressed gene analyses

Studies on Oryza sativa (rice) are crucial for improving agricultural productivity and ensuring global sustenance security, especially considering the increasing drought and heat stress caused by extreme climate change. Currently, the genes and mechanisms underlying drought and heat resistance in rice are not fully understood, and the scope for enhancing the development of new strains remains considerable. To accurately identify the key genes related to drought and heat stress responses in rice, multiple datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database were integrated in this study. A co-expression network was constructed using a Weighted Correlation Network Analysis (WGCNA) algorithm. We further distinguished the core network and intersected it with differentially expressed genes and multiple expression datasets for screening. Differences in gene expression levels were verified using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). OsDjC53, MBF1C, BAG6, HSP23.2, and HSP21.9 were found to be associated with the heat stress response, and it is also possible that UGT83A1 and OsCPn60a1, although not directly related, are affected by drought stress. This study offers significant insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying stress responses in rice, which could promote the development of stress-tolerant rice breeds.

A genomic variation map provides insights into peanut diversity in China and associations with 28 agronomic traits

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an important allotetraploid oil and food legume crop. China is one of the world's largest peanut producers and consumers. However, genomic variations underlying the migration and divergence of peanuts in China remain unclear. Here we reported a genome-wide variation map based on the resequencing of 390 peanut accessions, suggesting that peanuts might have been introduced into southern and northern China separately, forming two cultivation centers. Selective sweep analysis highlights asymmetric selection between the two subgenomes during peanut improvement. A classical pedigree from South China offers a context for the examination of the impact of artificial selection on peanut genome. Genome-wide association studies identified 22,309 significant associations with 28 agronomic traits, including candidate genes for plant architecture and oil biosynthesis. Our findings shed light on peanut migration and diversity in China and provide valuable genomic resources for peanut improvement.

Revolutionizing agriculture: Harnessing nano-innovations for sustainable farming and environmental preservation

The agricultural sector is currently confronted with a significant crisis stemming from the rapid changes in climate patterns, declining soil fertility, insufficient availability of essential macro and micronutrients, excessive reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and the presence of heavy metals in soil. These numerous challenges pose a considerable threat to the agriculture industry. Furthermore, the exponential growth of the global population has led to a substantial increase in food consumption, further straining agricultural systems worldwide. Nanotechnology holds great promise in revolutionizing the food and agriculture industry, decreasing the harmful effects of agricultural practices on the environment, and improving productivity. Nanomaterials such as inorganic, lipid, and polymeric nanoparticles have been developed for increasing productivity due to their unique properties. Various strategies can enhance product quality, such as the use of nano-clays, nano zeolites, and hydrogel-based materials to regulate water absorption and release, effectively mitigating water scarcity. The production of nanoparticles can be achieved through various methods, each of which has its own unique benefits and limitations. Among these methods, chemical synthesis is widely favored due to the impact that various factors such as concentration, particle size, and shape have on product quality and efficiency. This review provides a detailed examination of the roles of nanotechnology and nanoparticles in sustainable agriculture, including their synthetic methods, and presents an analysis of their associated advantages and disadvantages. To date, there are serious concerns and awareness about healthy agriculture and the production of healthy products, therefore the development of nanotech-enabled devices that act as preventive and early warning systems to identify health issues, offering remedial measures is necessary.

Constitutive basis of root system architecture: uncovering a promising trait for breeding nutrient- and drought-resilient crops

Root system architecture (RSA) plays a pivotal role in efficient uptake of essential nutrients, such as phosphorous (P), nitrogen (N), and water. In soils with heterogeneous nutrient distribution, root plasticity can optimize acquisition and plant growth. Here, we present evidence that a constitutive RSA can confer benefits for sorghum grown under both sufficient and limiting growth conditions. Our studies, using P efficient SC103 and inefficient BTx635 sorghum cultivars, identified significant differences in root traits, with SC103 developing a larger root system with more and longer lateral roots, and enhanced shoot biomass, under both nutrient sufficient and deficient conditions. In addition to this constitutive attribute, under P deficiency, both cultivars exhibited an initial increase in lateral root development; however, SC103 still maintained the larger root biomass. Although N deficiency and drought stress inhibited both root and shoot growth, for both sorghum cultivars, SC103 again maintained the better performance. These findings reveal that SC103, a P efficient sorghum cultivar, also exhibited enhanced growth performance under N deficiency and drought. Our results provide evidence that this constitutive nature of RSA can provide an avenue for breeding nutrient- and drought-resilient crops.

TaACTIN7-D regulates plant height and grain shape in bread wheat

Exploitation of new gene resources and genetic networks contributing to the control of crop yield-related traits, such as plant height, grain size, and shape, may enable us to breed modern high-yielding wheat varieties through molecular methods. In this study, via ethylmethanesulfonate mutagenesis, we identify a wheat mutant plant, mu-597, that shows semi-dwarf plant architecture and round grain shape. Through bulked segregant RNA-seq and map-based cloning, the causal gene for the semi-dwarf phenotype of mu-597 is located. We find that a single-base mutation in the coding region of TaACTIN7-D (TaACT7-D), leading to a Gly-to-Ser (G65S) amino acid mutation at the 65th residue of the deduced TaACT7-D protein, can explain the semi-dwarfism and round grain shape of mu-597. Further evidence shows that the G65S mutation in TaACT7-D hinders the polymerization of actin from monomeric (G-actin) to filamentous (F-actin) status while attenuates wheat responses to multiple phytohormones, including brassinosteroids, auxin, and gibberellin. Together, these findings not only define a new semi-dwarfing gene resource that can be potentially used to design plant height and grain shape of bread wheat but also establish a direct link between actin structure modulation and phytohormone signal transduction.

ZmEREB92 plays a negative role in seed germination by regulating ethylene signaling and starch mobilization in maize

Rapid and uniform seed germination is required for modern cropping system. Thus, it is important to optimize germination performance through breeding strategies in maize, in which identification for key regulators is needed. Here, we characterized an AP2/ERF transcription factor, ZmEREB92, as a negative regulator of seed germination in maize. Enhanced germination in ereb92 mutants is contributed by elevated ethylene signaling and starch degradation. Consistently, an ethylene signaling gene ZmEIL7 and an α-amylase gene ZmAMYa2 are identified as direct targets repressed by ZmEREB92. OsERF74, the rice ortholog of ZmEREB92, shows conserved function in negatively regulating seed germination in rice. Importantly, this orthologous gene pair is likely experienced convergently selection during maize and rice domestication. Besides, mutation of ZmEREB92 and OsERF74 both lead to enhanced germination under cold condition, suggesting their regulation on seed germination might be coupled with temperature sensitivity. Collectively, our findings uncovered the ZmEREB92-mediated regulatory mechanism of seed germination in maize and provide breeding targets for maize and rice to optimize seed germination performance towards changing climates.

Synthetic biology for plant genetic engineering and molecular farming

Many efforts have been put into engineering plants to improve crop yields and stress tolerance and boost the bioproduction of valuable molecules. Yet, our capabilities are still limited due to the lack of well-characterized genetic building blocks and resources for precise manipulation and given the inherently challenging properties of plant tissues. Advancements in plant synthetic biology can overcome these bottlenecks and release the full potential of engineered plants. In this review, we first discuss the recently developed plant synthetic elements from single parts to advanced circuits, software, and hardware tools expediting the engineering cycle. Next, we survey the advancements in plant biotechnology enabled by these recent resources. We conclude the review with outstanding challenges and future directions of plant synthetic biology.

From anaerobic digestion to single cell protein synthesis: A promising route beyond biogas utilization

The accumulation of a large amount of organic solid waste and the lack of sufficient protein supply worldwide are two major challenges caused by rapid population growth. Anaerobic digestion is the main force of organic waste treatment, and the high-value utilization of its products (biogas and digestate) has been widely concerned. These products can be used as nutrients and energy sources for microorganisms such as microalgae, yeast, methane-oxidizing bacteria(MOB), and hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria(HOB) to produce single cell protein(SCP), which contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals. This new model of energy conversion can construct a bioeconomic cycle from waste to nutritional products, which treats waste without additional carbon emissions and can harvest high-value biomass. Techno-economic analysis shows that the SCP from biogas and digestate has higher profit than biogas electricity generation, and its production cost is lower than the SCP using special raw materials as the substrate. In this review, the case of SCP-rich microorganisms using anaerobic digestion products for growth was investigated. Some of the challenges faced by the process and the latest developments were analyzed, and their potential economic and environmental value was verified.

A review on food subsystem simulation models for the water-food-energy nexus: development perspective

Agricultural crops are the primary food source because livestock and poultry products also indirectly depend on crops. A significant obstacle to adopting the water, food, and energy (WFE) nexus is the lack of a comprehensive and easy-to-use simulation model for the food subsystem focusing on crops. By reviewing the articles in Scopus and Google Scholar databases, WFE nexus studies can be divided into two categories: simulation-based and conceptual-based studies of WFE nexus. Based on the developmental perspective on food subsystem modeling in the WFE nexus, the conceptual studies were excluded, and the modeling studies were reviewed. Two points of view can be used for WFE nexus modeling: 1. hard-link modeling and 2. soft-link modeling. Comparing these two types of modeling showed that hard-link modeling cannot model the interrelations of the food subsystem, and this shortcoming is of great importance. This study reviewed the crop growth models (CGMs) used in the WFE nexus system from the development perspective. The technical characteristics of the CGMs have been evaluated according to the requirements of the CGMs. Finally, a checklist based on the criteria defined for the nexus system has been provided, which can guide researchers in choosing the appropriate CGMs for the food subsystem with the nexus approach. The analysis revealed that none of the CGMs studied alone were sufficient to develop a simulation model for the food subsystem with the WFE nexus. However, the AquaCrop model met more criteria.

Analysis of Raffinose Synthase Gene Family in Bread Wheat and Identification of Drought Resistance and Salt Tolerance Function of TaRS15-3B

Raffinose synthase (RS) plays a crucial role in plant growth and development, as well as in responses to biotic stresses and abiotic stresses, yet few studies have been conducted on its role in bread wheat. Therefore, in this study we screened and identified a family of bread wheat raffinose synthase genes based on bread wheat genome information and analyzed their physicochemical properties, phylogenetic evolutionary relationships, conserved structural domains, promoter cis-acting elements, and expression patterns. The BSMV-induced silencing of TaRS15-3B resulted in the bread wheat seedlings being susceptible to drought and salt stress and reduced the expression levels of stress-related and ROS-scavenging genes in bread wheat plants. This further affected the ability of bread wheat to cope with drought and salt stress. In conclusion, this study revealed that the RS gene family in bread wheat plays an important role in plant response to abiotic stresses and that the TaRS15-3B gene can improve the tolerance of transgenic bread wheat to drought and salt stresses, provide directions for the study of other RS gene families in bread wheat, and supply candidate genes for use in molecular breeding of bread wheat for stress resistance.

Exploring the future of GM technology in sustainable local food systems in Colombia

The security of Earth's food systems is challenged by shifting regional climates. While agricultural processes are disrupted by climate change, they also play a large role in contributing to destabilizing greenhouse gases. Finding new strategies to increase yields while decreasing agricultural environmental impacts is essential. Tropical agriculture is particularly susceptible to climate change: local, smallholder farming, which provides a majority of the food supply, is high risk and has limited adaptation capacity. Rapid, inexpensive, intuitive solutions are needed, like the implementation of genetically modified (GM) crops. In the Latin American tropics, high awareness and acceptance of GM technologies, opportunities to test GM crops as part of local agricultural educations, and their known economic benefits, support their use. However, this is not all that is needed for the future of GM technologies in these areas: GM implementation must also consider environmental and social sustainability, which can be unique to a locality. Primarily from the perspective of its educators, the potential of a rural Colombian university in driving GM implementation is explored, including the role of this type of university in producing agricultural engineers who can innovate with GM to meet regionally-dependent environmental and cultural needs that could increase their sustainability.

Tolerance with High Yield Potential Is Provided by Lower Na+ Ion Accumulation and Higher Photosynthetic Activity in Tolerant YNU31-2-4 Rice Genotype under Salinity and Multiple Heat and Salinity Stress

The yield-reduction effect of abiotic stressors such as salinity and heat stresses with the growing world population threatens food security. Although adverse effects of salinity and heat stress on plant growth and production parameters have been documented, in nature, abiotic stresses occur sequentially or simultaneously. In this study, the stress tolerance and yield capacity of Yukinkomai, YNU31-2-4, and YNU SL rice genotypes tested under control (26 °C, 0 mM NaCl), salinity (26 °C, 75 mM NaCl), heat (31 °C, 0 mM NaCl), and heat and salinity (31 °C, 75 mM NaCl) stress combinations at vegetative and reproductive stages with six different scenarios. The results show that salinity and the heat and salinity combination stresses highly reduce plant growth performance and yield capacity. Heat stress during reproduction does not affect the yield but reduces the grain quality. The YNU31-2-4 genotype performs better under heavy salt and heat and salinity stress then the Yukinkomai and YNU SL genotypes. YNU31-2-4 genotypes accumulate less Na⁺ and more K⁺ under salt and multiple stresses. In the YNU31-2-4 genotype, low Na⁺ ion accumulation increases photosynthetic activity and pigment deposition, boosting the yield. Stress lowers the glucose accumulation in dry seeds, but the YNU31-2-4 genotype has a higher glucose accumulation.

Agricultural biotechnology for sustainable food security

Of late, global food security has been under threat by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the recent military conflict in Eastern Europe. This article presents the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal related to achieving food security and sustainable development in European Union (EU) agriculture, taking the aforementioned threats into account. In addition, it discusses the future of plant agricultural biotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI) systems, considering their potential for reaching the goal of food security. Paradoxically, the present challenging situation may allow politicians and stakeholders of the EU to realize opportunities and use the potential of the biotechnology sector.

B-type response regulator hst1 controls salinity tolerance in rice by regulating transcription factors and antioxidant mechanisms

Salinity is a serious environmental problem that limits plant yield in almost half of the agricultural fields. The hitomebore salt tolerant 1(hst1) is a mutant B-type response regulator gene that was reported to improve salinity tolerance in the 'YNU31-2-4' (YNU) genotype. The sister line (SL) is salt-sensitive, and the nearest genomic relative of the YNU plant has the OsRR22 gene, which is the non-mutant form of the hst1 gene. Biochemical and comprehensive transcriptome analysis of SL and YNU plants was performed to clarify the salinity tolerance mechanism(s) mediated by the hst1 gene. The hst1 gene reduced Na⁺ ions, lipid peroxidation, and H₂O₂ content, and improve proline and antioxidant enzymes activities under salt stress. Various transporter and gene-specific transcriptional regulator genes up-regulated in presence of the hst1 gene under saline conditions, identifying that post-stress transcription factors (OsbHLH056, OsH43, OsGRAS29, and OsMADS1) contributed to improved salinity tolerance in YNU plants. Specifically, OsSalT, miR156, and OsLPT1.16 genes were up-regulated, while upstream (OsHKs and OsHPs) and downstream regulators of the OsRR22 gene were down-regulated in YNU plants under saline conditions. Notably, the transcription factors reprogramming, upstream and downstream genes, indicate that these pathways are transcriptionally regulated by the hst1 gene. The findings of the regulatory role of the hst1 gene on plant transcriptome provide a greater understanding of hst1-mediated salt tolerance in rice plants. This knowledge will contribute to understanding the salinity tolerance mechanisms in rice and the evolution of salt-tolerant crops with the ability to withstand higher salinity to ensure food security during climate change.

Association studies of genes in a Pb response-associated network in maize (Zea mays L.) reveal that ZmPIP2;5 is involved in Pb tolerance

Lead (Pb) in the soil affects the growth and development of plants and causes damages to the human body through the food chain. Here, we identified and cloned a Pb-tolerance gene ZmPIP2;5 based on a weighted gene co-expression network analysis and gene-based association studies. We showed that ZmPIP2;5 encodes a plasma membrane aquaporin and positively regulated Pb tolerance and accumulation in Arabidopsis and yeast. Overexpression of ZmPIP2;5 increased root length and fresh weight of Arabidopsis seedlings under Pb stress. Heterologous expression of ZmPIP2;5 in yeast caused the enhanced growth speed under Pb treatment and Pb accumulation in yeast cells. A (T/A) SNP in the ZmPIP2;5 promoter affected the expression abundance of ZmPIP2;5 and thereby led to the difference in Pb tolerance among different maize lines. Our study helps to understand the mechanism underlying plant tolerance to Pb stress and provides new ideas for breeding Pb-tolerance maize varieties via molecular marker-assisted selection.

Biowaste upcycling into second-generation microbial protein through mixed-culture fermentation

Securing a sustainable protein supply at the global level is among the greatest challenges currently faced by humanity. Alternative protein sources, such as second-generation microbial protein (MP), could give rise to innovative circular bioeconomy practices, synthesizing high-value bioproducts through the recovery and upcycling of resources from overabundant biowastes and residues. Within such a multi-feedstock biorefinery scenario, the wide range of microbial pathways and networks that characterize mixed microbial cultures, offers interesting and not yet fully explored advantages over conventional monoculture-based processes. In this review, we combine a comprehensive analysis of waste recovery platforms for second-generation MP production with a critical evaluation of the research gaps and potentials offered by mixed culture-based MP fermentation processes.

Public perception of plant gene technologies worldwide in the light of food security

Achieving global food security is becoming increasingly challenging and many stakeholders around the world are searching for new ways to reach this demanding goal. Here we demonstrate examples of genetically modified and genome edited plants introduced to the market in different world regions. Transgenic crops are regulated based on the characteristics of the product in many countries including the United States and Canada, while the European Union, India, China and others regulate process-based i.e. on how the product was made. We also present the public perception of state-of-the-art plant gene technologies in different regions of the world in the past 20 years. The results of literature analysis show that the public in Europe and North America is more familiar with the notion of genome editing and genetically modified organisms than the public in other world regions.

The TaGSK1, TaSRG, TaPTF1, and TaP5CS Gene Transcripts Confirm Salinity Tolerance by Increasing Proline Production in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Salinity is an abiotic stress factor that reduces yield and threatens food security in the world's arid and semi-arid regions. The development of salt-tolerant genotypes is critical for mitigating yield losses, and this journey begins with the identification of sensitive and tolerant plants. Numerous physiologic and molecular markers for detecting salt-tolerant wheat genotypes have been developed. One of them is proline, which has been used for a long time but has received little information about proline-related genes in wheat genotypes. In this study, proline content and the expression levels of proline-related genes (TaPTF1, TaDHN, TaSRG, TaSC, TaPIMP1, TaMIP, TaHKT1;4, TaGSK, TaP5CS, and TaMYB) were examined in sensitive, moderate, and tolerant genotypes under salt stress (0, 50, 150, and 250 mM NaCl) for 0, 12, and 24 h. Our results show that salt stress increased the proline content in all genotypes, but it was found higher in salt-tolerant genotypes than in moderate and sensitive genotypes. The salinity stress increased gene expression levels in salt-tolerant and moderate genotypes. While salt-stress exposure for 12 and 24 h had a substantial effect on gene expression in wheat, TaPTF1, TaPIMP1, TaMIP, TaHKT1;4, and TaMYB genes were considerably upregulated in 24 h. The salt-tolerant genotypes showed a higher positive interaction than a negative interaction. The TaPTF1, TaP5CS, TaGSK1, and TaSRG genes were found to be more selective than the other analyzed genes under salt-stress conditions. Despite each gene's specific function, increasing proline biosynthesis functioned as a common mechanism for separating salt tolerance from sensitivity.

Functional and biotechnological cues of potassium homeostasis for stress tolerance and plant development

Potassium (K+) is indispensable for the regulation of a plethora of functions like plant metabolism, growth, development, and abiotic stress responses. K+ is associated with protein synthesis and entangled in the activation of scores of enzymes, stomatal regulation, and photosynthesis. It has multiple transporters and channels that assist in the uptake, efflux, transport within the cell as well as from soil to different tissues, and the grain filling sites. While it is implicated in ion homeostasis during salt stress, it acts as a modulator of stomatal movements during water deficit conditions. K+ is reported to abate the effects of chilling and photooxidative stresses. K+ has been found to ameliorate effectively the co-occurrence of drought and high-temperature stresses. Nutrient deficiency of K+ makes leaves necrotic, leads to diminished photosynthesis, and decreased assimilate utilization highlighting the role it plays in photosynthesis. Notably, K+ is associated with the detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS) when plants are exposed to diverse abiotic stress conditions. It is irrefutable now that K+ reduces the activity of NADPH oxidases and at the same time maintains electron transport activity, which helps in mitigating the oxidative stress. K+ as a macronutrient in plant growth, the role of K+ during abiotic stress and the protein phosphatases involved in K+ transport have been reviewed. This review presents a holistic view of the biological functions of K+, its uptake, translocation, signaling, and the critical roles it plays under abiotic stress conditions, plant growth, and development that are being unraveled in recent times.

Wheat traits and the associated loci conferring radiation use efficiency

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) radiation use efficiency (RUE) must be raised through crop breeding to further increase the yield potential, as the harvest index is now close to its theoretical limit. Field experiments including 209 wheat cultivars which have been widely cultivated in China since the 1940s were conducted in two growing seasons (2018-2019 and 2019-2020) to evaluate the variations of phenological, physiological, plant architectural, and yield-related traits and their contributions to RUE and to identify limiting factors for wheat yield potential. The average annual genetic gain in grain yield was 0.60% (or 45.32 kg ha^-1  year^-1 ; R²  = 0.44, P < 0.01), mainly attributed to the gain in RUE (r = 0.85, P < 0.01). The net photosynthetic rates were positively and closely correlated with grain RUE and grain yield, suggesting source as a limiting factor to future yield gains. Thirty-four cultivars were identified, exhibiting not only high RUE, but also traits contributing to high RUE and 11 other critical traits - of known genetic basis - as potential parents for breeding to improve yield and RUE. Our findings reveal wheat traits and the associated loci conferring RUE, which are valuable for facilitating marker-assisted breeding to improve wheat RUE and yield potential.

Genomic selection in tropical perennial crops and plantation trees: a review

To overcome the multiple challenges currently faced by agriculture, such as climate change and soil deterioration, more efficient plant breeding strategies are required. Genomic selection (GS) is crucial for the genetic improvement of quantitative traits, as it can increase selection intensity, shorten the generation interval, and improve selection accuracy for traits that are difficult to phenotype. Tropical perennial crops and plantation trees are of major economic importance and have consequently been the subject of many GS articles. In this review, we discuss the factors that affect GS accuracy (statistical models, linkage disequilibrium, information concerning markers, relatedness between training and target populations, the size of the training population, and trait heritability) and the genetic gain expected in these species. The impact of GS will be particularly strong in tropical perennial crops and plantation trees as they have long breeding cycles and constrained selection intensity. Future GS prospects are also discussed. High-throughput phenotyping will allow constructing of large training populations and implementing of phenomic selection. Optimized modeling is needed for longitudinal traits and multi-environment trials. The use of multi-omics, haploblocks, and structural variants will enable going beyond single-locus genotype data. Innovative statistical approaches, like artificial neural networks, are expected to efficiently handle the increasing amounts of heterogeneous multi-scale data. Targeted recombinations on sites identified from profiles of marker effects have the potential to further increase genetic gain. GS can also aid re-domestication and introgression breeding. Finally, GS consortia will play an important role in making the best of these opportunities.

Genome-Wide Analysis of the Peptidase M24 Superfamily in Triticum aestivum Demonstrates That TaM24-9 Is Involved in Abiotic Stress Response

The peptidase M24 (Metallopeptidase 24, M24) superfamily is essential for plant growth, stress response, and pathogen defense. At present, there are few systematic reports on the identification and classification of members of the peptidase M24 proteins superfamily in wheat. In this work, we identified 53 putative candidate TaM24 genes. According to the protein sequences characteristics, these members can be roughly divided into three subfamilies: I, II, III. Most TaM24 genes are complex with multiple exons, and the motifs are relatively conserved in each sub-group. Through chromosome mapping analysis, we found that the 53 genes were unevenly distributed on 19 wheat chromosomes (except 3A and 3D), of which 68% were in triads. Analysis of gene duplication events showed that 62% of TaM24 genes in wheat came from fragment duplication events, and there were no tandem duplication events to amplify genes. Analysis of the promoter sequences of TaM24 genes revealed that cis-acting elements were rich in response elements to drought, osmotic stress, ABA, and MeJA. We also studied the expression of TaM24 in wheat tissues at developmental stages and abiotic stress. Then we selected TaM24-9 as the target for further analysis. The results showed that TaM24-9 genes strengthened the drought and salt tolerance of plants. Overall, our analysis showed that members of the peptidase M24 genes may participate in the abiotic stress response and provided potential gene resources for improving wheat resistance.

Genetic modifications associated with sustainability aspects for sustainable developments

Sustainable development serves as the foundation for a range of international and national policymaking. Traditional breeding methods have been used to modify plant genomes and production. Genetic engineering is the practice of assisting agricultural systems in adapting to rapidly changing global growth by hastening the breeding of new varieties. On the other hand, the development of genetic engineering has enabled more precise control over the genomic alterations made in recent decades. Genetic changes from one species can now be introduced into a completely unrelated species, increasing agricultural output or making certain elements easier to manufacture. Harvest plants and soil microorganisms are just a few of the more well-known genetically modified creatures. Researchers assess current studies and illustrate the possibility of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) from the perspectives of various stakeholders. GMOs increase yields, reduce costs, and reduce agriculture's terrestrial and ecological footprint. Modern technology benefits innovators, farmers, and consumers alike. Agricultural biotechnology has numerous applications, each with its own set of potential consequences. This will be able to reach its full potential if more people have access to technology and excessive regulation is avoided. This paper covers the regulations for genetically modified crops (GMCs) as well as the economic implications. It also includes sections on biodiversity and environmental impact, as well as GMCs applications. Cell-Free Supernatant of Bacillus Strains can Improve Seed Vigor Index of Corn (Zea mays L.) Under Salinity Stress

Currently, salinity is the second biggest challenge in the world after drought and affects all stages of plant growth. The use of environmentally friendly methods such as microorganisms and their derivatives can reduce the destructive effects of salinity stress. A growth chamber experiment was conducted to determine the effects of cell-free supernatant (CFS) from Bacillus strains on germination of corn under salinity stress. Corn seeds were subjected to three salinity levels (0, 100 and 150 mM of NaCl), cell-free supernatant of Bacillus strains (U35, U47, U48, U49, and U50) at two levels of dilution (1:50 and 1:250). Germination percentage and rate decreased with increasing salinity toward 150 mM NaCl all together leading to suppressed growth variables for corn seed seedlings including fresh and dry weight of radicle (47.71 and 52.63%, respectively), and shoot (49.52 and 49.25%, respectively), radicle and shoot lengths (39.90 and 66.07%, respectively). Seed vigor index also decreased by 63.04% at 150 mM NaCl. Contrary to salinity, the CFSs of Bacillus strains increased all the growth traits of corn seeds and reduced the negative effects of salinity, especially severe salinity. Ratios of 1:50 and 1: 250 gave best performance for CFSs from U35 and U50, respectively. In general, the highest seed vigor index was obtained by application of 1: 250 CFS from U50. Most germination traits and seed vigor index correlated significantly positive; however, mean germination time was negatively and significantly correlated with the seed vigor index of corn. The results showed that cell-free supernatant use, may as well-helped in changing the ratios of phytohormones, ROS, the activity of antioxidant enzymes and osmotic proteins, hence reduce the negative effects of salinity and improve seed vigor index which eventually increases the ability of plant seedling establishment under saline conditions.

Myths and Realities about Genetically Modified Food: A Risk-Benefit Analysis

The development and consumption of genetically modified (GM) crops are surrounded by controversy. According to proponents, only molecular biology approaches and genetic engineering tools are realistic food shortage solutions for the world’s ever-growing population. The main purpose of this study is to review the impact of GM products on human, animal, and environmental health. People still reject GM crops not only because of safety concerns, but also for moral reasons. Toxicity, allergies, and possible horizontal gene transfer (HGT) to the environment or to other species have been associated with the marketing of GM products. Moreover, the scarce data available about the long-term implications of using GM crops is another opponent concern. Nevertheless, science has evidenced no harm from GM crops use to date but has, instead, reported several benefits that result from their commercialization, such as economic, environmental, and health benefits for the general public. Legislation and policies about GM product labeling standards are being discussed. To overcome emerging food security challenges, considering quality scientific information is essential rather than leaving the issue and merely moving toward moral discussion. Hence, a risk–benefit analysis is necessary.

Genome-Wide Association Analysis for Salt-Induced Phenotypic and Physiologic Responses in Rice at Seedling and Reproductive Stages

Salinity is one of the main adverse environmental factors severely inhibiting rice growth and decreasing grain productivity. Developing rice varieties with salt tolerance (ST) is one of the most economical approaches to cope with salinity stress. In this study, the salt tolerance of 220 rice accessions from rice diversity panel l (RDP1), representing five subpopulations, were evaluated based on 16 ST indices at both seedling and reproductive stages under salt stress. An apparent inconsistency was found for ST between the two stages. Through a gene-based/tightly linked genome-wide association study with 201,332 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located within genes and their flanking regions were used, a total of 214 SNPs related to 251 genes, significantly associated with 16 ST-related indices, were detected at both stages. Eighty-two SNPs with low frequency favorable (LFF) alleles in the population were proposed to hold high breeding potential in improving rice ST. Fifty-four rice accessions collectively containing all these LFF alleles were identified as donors of these alleles. Through the integration of meta-quantitative trait locus (QTL) for ST and the response patterns of differential expression genes to salt stress, thirty-eight candidate genes were suggested to be involved in the regulation of rice ST. In total, the present study provides valuable information for further characterizing ST-related genes and for breeding ST varieties across whole developmental stages through marker-assisted selection (MAS).

Role of Silica Nanoparticles in Abiotic and Biotic Stress Tolerance in Plants: A Review

The demand for agricultural crops continues to escalate with the rapid growth of the population. However, extreme climates, pests and diseases, and environmental pollution pose a huge threat to agricultural food production. Silica nanoparticles (SNPs) are beneficial for plant growth and production and can be used as nanopesticides, nanoherbicides, and nanofertilizers in agriculture. This article provides a review of the absorption and transportation of SNPs in plants, as well as their role and mechanisms in promoting plant growth and enhancing plant resistance against biotic and abiotic stresses. In general, SNPs induce plant resistance against stress factors by strengthening the physical barrier, improving plant photosynthesis, activating defensive enzyme activity, increasing anti-stress compounds, and activating the expression of defense-related genes. The effect of SNPs on plants stress is related to the physical and chemical properties (e.g., particle size and surface charge) of SNPs, soil, and stress type. Future research needs to focus on the “SNPs–plant–soil–microorganism” system by using omics and the in-depth study of the molecular mechanisms of SNPs-mediated plant resistance.

Transcriptional regulation of cell growth and reprogramming of systemic response in wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum) seedlings by Bacillus paralicheniformis TRQ65

Bacillus paralicheniformis TRQ65 reprograms the gene expression patterns associated with systemic response to potentially facilitate its colonization and stimulate cell growth and plant biomass. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) carry out numerous mechanisms that enhance growth in seedlings, such as nutrient solubilization, phytohormone production, biocontrol activity, and regulation of induced systemic resistance (ISR) and acquired systemic resistance (ASR). Bacillus paralicheniformis TRQ65 is a biological and plant growth-promoting bacterium isolated from wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum) rhizosphere. In this study, we performed a transcriptomic analysis of wheat seedlings inoculated with the native rhizobacterium Bacillus paralicheniformis TRQ65 (1 × 10⁷ cells∙g ^-1 of soil) at early development stages (GS15). A morphometrical assay was carried out to confirm growth promotion and after the cultivation period, TRQ65 was re-isolated to define inoculum persistence. Inoculated seedlings showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase in shoot length (93.48%) and dry weight in both shoot (117.02%) and root (48.33%) tissues; also, the strain persisted in the soil at 1.4 × 10⁷ UFC∙g^-1 of soil. A total of 228 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (FDR < 0.05 and |log2 fold change|≥ 1.3) were observed in response to TRQ65 inoculation, of which 185 were down-regulated and 43 were up-regulated. The transcriptional patterns were characterized by the regulation of multidimensional cell growth (ROS, Ca⁺² channel, and NADPH oxidases activity), suppression of defense mechanism (PR proteins, PDFs, ROS, transcription factors), induction of central stimuli receptors (RALF, WAK, MAPK), carbohydrate metabolism (invertase activity) and phytohormone-related transport (ABCG transporter and AAAP). These results suggest that B. paralicheniformis TRQ65 is a promising bioinoculant agent for increasing wheat growth and development by reprogramming ISR and ASR simultaneously, suppressing defense mechanisms and inducing central stimuli response.

Transcriptional Regulation of Metabolic and Cellular Processes in Durum Wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum) in the Face of Temperature Increasing

The Yaqui Valley, Mexico, has been historically considered as an experimental field for semiarid regions worldwide since temperature is an important constraint affecting durum wheat cultivation. Here, we studied the transcriptional and morphometrical response of durum wheat at an increased temperature (+2 °C) for deciphering molecular mechanisms involved in the thermal adaptation by this crop. The morphometrical assay showed a significant decrease in almost all the evaluated traits (shoot/root length, biovolume index, and dry/shoot weight) except in the dry root weight and the root:shoot ratio. At the transcriptional level, 283 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained (False Discovery Rate (FDR) ≤ 0.05 and |log2 fold change| ≥ 1.3). From these, functional annotation with MapMan4 and a gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis with GOSeq were carried out to obtain 27 GO terms significantly enriched (overrepresented FDR ≤ 0.05). Overrepresented and functionally annotated genes belonged to ontologies associated with photosynthetic acclimation, respiration, changes in carbon balance, lipid biosynthesis, the regulation of reactive oxygen species, and the acceleration of physiological progression. These findings are the first insight into the regulation of the mechanism influenced by a temperature increase in durum wheat.

Nanotechnology advances for sustainable agriculture: current knowledge and prospects in plant growth modulation and nutrition

Advances in nanotechnology make it an important tool for improving agricultural production. Strong evidence supports the role of nanomaterials as nutrients or nanocarriers for the controlled release of fertilizers to improve plant growth. Scientific research shows that nanotechnology applied in plant sciences is smart technology. Excessive application of mineral fertilizers has produced a harmful impact on the ecosystem. Furthermore, the projected increase in the human population by 2050 has led to the search for alternatives to ensure food security. Nanotechnology is a promising strategy to enhance crop productivity while minimizing fertilizer inputs. Nanofertilizers can contribute to the slow and sustainable release of nutrients to improve the efficiency of nutrient use in plants. Nanomaterial properties (i.e., size, morphology and charge) and plant physiology are crucial factors that influence the impact on plant growth. An important body of scientific research highlights the role of carbon nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles and metal oxide nanoparticles to improve plant development through the modulation of physiological and metabolic processes. Modulating nutrient concentrations, photosynthesis processes and antioxidant enzyme activities have led to increases in shoot length, root development, photosynthetic pigments and fruit yield. In parallel, nanocarriers (nanoclays, nanoparticles of hydroxyapatite, mesoporous silica and chitosan) have been shown to be an important tool for the controlled and sustainable release of conventional fertilizers to improve plant nutrition; however, the technical advances in nanofertilizers need to be accompanied by modernization of the regulations and legal frameworks to allow wider commercialization of these elements. Nanofertilizers are a promising strategy to improve plant development and nutrition, but their application in sustainable agriculture remains a great challenge. The present review summarizes the current advance of research into nanofertilizers, and their future prospects.

In situ Root Phenotypes of Cotton Seedlings Under Phosphorus Stress Revealed Through RhizoPot

Phosphorus (P) deficiency is a common challenge in crop production because of its poor mobility through the soil. The root system plays a significant role in P absorption from the soil and is the initial indicator of low P levels. However, the phenotypic dynamics and longevity of cotton roots under P stress remain unknown. In this study, RhizoPot, an improvised in situ root observation device, was used to monitor the dynamics of root phenotypes of cotton seedlings under P-deficient (PD) and P-replete (PR) conditions. Low P stress reduced P absorption and accumulation in the roots, leading to low dry weight accumulation. Cotton seedlings responded to low P stress by increasing the number of lateral roots, specific root length, branch density, root length density, and length of root hairs. Additionally, the life span of root hairs was prolonged. Low P stress also reduced the average diameter of roots, promoted root extension, expanded the root coverage area, and increased the range of P acquisition. Principal component analysis revealed that the net root growth rate, root length density, root dry weight, P absorption efficiency, average root hair length, and taproot daily growth significantly influenced the cotton root architecture. Collectively, these results show that low P stress reduces the net growth rate of cotton seedling roots and restricts plant growth. Plants respond to P deficiency by extending the life span of root hairs and increasing specific root length and lateral root branch density. This change in root system architecture improves the adaptability of plants to low P conditions. The findings of this study may guide the selection of cotton varieties with efficient P utilization.

Selection of extraction solvents for edible oils from microalgae and improvement of the oxidative stability

Microalgae are natural, green raw material and could be used for the development of edible oil for its abundant polyunsaturated fatty acids, with fast growth rate. The wet mud and dry powder of Scenedesmus dimorphus were applied to compare the extraction effects of different organic solvent systems in this study. The results displayed that, by using the ethanol/n-hexane (3:2, v/v) mixed solvent, the oil extraction rate from wet algal mud was 68.31 %, with 71.65 % of neutral lipid, and 1.87 % of vitamin E; the retention rates of protein, chlorophyll, and carbohydrates in the algal residue after oil extraction were 60.56 %, 53.27 %, and 80.20 %, respectively. Through the single solvent n-hexane, the oil extraction rate from dried algal powder was 71.52 %, with 75.86 % of neutral lipids, and 1.63 % of vitamin E. The retention rates of protein, chlorophyll, and carbohydrate were 55.92 %, 61.33 % and 78.35 %, respectively, suggesting the high rate of nutrient retention. In addition, the orthogonal experiments indicated that the compound of low concentration natural antioxidants with 0.010 % of tea polyphenols, 0.005 % of vitamin E, and 0.015 % of rosemary extract had the best effects on improvement of oxidative stability.

Crop Classification Using MSCDN Classifier and Sparse Auto-Encoders with Non-Negativity Constraints for Multi-Temporal, Quad-Pol SAR Data

Accurate and reliable crop classification information is a significant data source for agricultural monitoring and food security evaluation research. It is well-known that polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data provides ample information for crop classification. Moreover, multi-temporal PolSAR data can further increase classification accuracies since the crops show different external forms as they grow up. In this paper, we distinguish the crop types with multi-temporal PolSAR data. First, due to the “dimension disaster” of multi-temporal PolSAR data caused by excessive scattering parameters, a neural network of sparse auto-encoder with non-negativity constraint (NC-SAE) was employed to compress the data, yielding efficient features for accurate classification. Second, a novel crop discrimination network with multi-scale features (MSCDN) was constructed to improve the classification performance, which is proved to be superior to the popular classifiers of convolutional neural networks (CNN) and support vector machine (SVM). The performances of the proposed method were evaluated and compared with the traditional methods by using simulated Sentinel-1 data provided by European Space Agency (ESA). For the final classification results of the proposed method, its overall accuracy and kappa coefficient reaches 99.33% and 99.19%, respectively, which were almost 5% and 6% higher than the CNN method. The classification results indicate that the proposed methodology is promising for practical use in agricultural applications.

Herbicide stress-induced DNA methylation changes in two Zea mays inbred lines differing in Roundup® resistance

DNA methylation plays a crucial role in the regulation of gene expression, activity of transposable elements, defense against foreign DNA, and inheritance of specific gene expression patterns. The link between stress exposure and sequence-specific changes in DNA methylation was hypothetical until it was shown that stresses can induce changes in the gene expression through hypomethylation or hypermethylation of DNA. To detect changes in DNA methylation under herbicide stress in two local Zea mays inbred lines exhibiting differential susceptibility to Roundup®, the methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP) technique was used. The overall DNA methylation levels were determined at approximately 60% for both tested lines. The most significant changes were observed for the more sensitive Z. mays line, where 6 h after the herbicide application, a large increase in the level of DNA methylation (attributed to the increase in fully methylated bands (18.65%)) was noted. DNA sequencing revealed that changes in DNA methylation profiles occurred in genes encoding heat shock proteins, membrane proteins, transporters, kinases, lipases, methyltransferases, zinc-finger proteins, cytochromes, and transposons. Herbicide stress-induced changes depended on the Z. mays variety, and the large increase in DNA methylation level in the sensitive line resulted in a lower ability to cope with stress conditions.

Physiologically Active Molecules and Functional Properties of Soybeans in Human Health-A Current Perspective

In addition to providing nutrients, food can help prevent and treat certain diseases. In particular, research on soy products has increased dramatically following their emergence as functional foods capable of improving blood circulation and intestinal regulation. In addition to their nutritional value, soybeans contain specific phytochemical substances that promote health and are a source of dietary fiber, phospholipids, isoflavones (e.g., genistein and daidzein), phenolic acids, saponins, and phytic acid, while serving as a trypsin inhibitor. These individual substances have demonstrated effectiveness in preventing chronic diseases, such as arteriosclerosis, cardiac diseases, diabetes, and senile dementia, as well as in treating cancer and suppressing osteoporosis. Furthermore, soybean can affect fibrinolytic activity, control blood pressure, and improve lipid metabolism, while eliciting antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic, and antibacterial effects. In this review, rather than to improve on the established studies on the reported nutritional qualities of soybeans, we intend to examine the physiological activities of soybeans that have recently been studied and confirm their potential as a high-functional, well-being food.

Current advances in plant-microbe communication via volatile organic compounds as an innovative strategy to improve plant growth

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by microorganisms have demonstrated an important role to improve growth and tolerance against abiotic stress on plants. Most studies have used Arabidopsis thaliana as a model plant, extending to other plants of commercial interest in the last years. Interestingly, the microbial VOCs are characterized by its biodegradable structure, quick action, absence of toxic substances, and acts at lower concentration to regulate plant physiological changes. These compounds modulate plant physiological processes such as phytohormone pathways, photosynthesis, nutrient acquisition, and metabolisms. Besides, the regulation of gene expression associated with cell components, biological processes, and molecular function are triggered by microbial VOCs. Otherwise, few studies have reported the important role of VOCs for confer plant tolerance to abiotic stress, such as drought and salinity. Although VOCs have shown an efficient action to enhance the plant growth under controlled conditions, there are still great challenges for their greenhouse or field application. Therefore, in this review, we summarize the current knowledge about the technical procedures, study cases, and physiological mechanisms triggered by microbial VOCs to finally discuss the challenges of its application in agriculture.

Structure-Function Insights of Jaburetox and Soyuretox: Novel Intrinsically Disordered Polypeptides Derived from Plant Ureases

Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) do not have a stable 3D structure but still have important biological activities. Jaburetox is a recombinant peptide derived from the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) urease and presents entomotoxic and antimicrobial actions. The structure of Jaburetox was elucidated using nuclear magnetic resonance which reveals it is an IDP with small amounts of secondary structure. Different approaches have demonstrated that Jaburetox acquires certain folding upon interaction with lipid membranes, a characteristic commonly found in other IDPs and usually important for their biological functions. Soyuretox, a recombinant peptide derived from the soybean (Glycine max) ubiquitous urease and homologous to Jaburetox, was also characterized for its biological activities and structural properties. Soyuretox is also an IDP, presenting more secondary structure in comparison with Jaburetox and similar entomotoxic and fungitoxic effects. Moreover, Soyuretox was found to be nontoxic to zebra fish, while Jaburetox was innocuous to mice and rats. This profile of toxicity affecting detrimental species without damaging mammals or the environment qualified them to be used in biotechnological applications. Both peptides were employed to develop transgenic crops and these plants were active against insects and nematodes, unveiling their immense potentiality for field applications.

Phytohormone-Mediated Molecular Mechanisms Involving Multiple Genes and QTL Govern Grain Number in Rice

Increasing the grain number is the most direct route toward enhancing the grain yield in cereals. In rice, grain number can be amplified through increasing the shoot branching (tillering), panicle branching, panicle length, and seed set percentage. Phytohormones have been conclusively shown to control the above characteristics by regulating molecular factors and their cross-interactions. The dynamic equilibrium of cytokinin levels in both shoot and inflorescence meristems, maintained by the regulation of its biosynthesis, activation, and degradation, determines the tillering and panicle branching, respectively. Auxins and gibberellins are known broadly to repress the axillary meristems, while jasmonic acid is implicated in the determination of reproductive meristem formation. The balance of auxin, gibberellin, and cytokinin determines meristematic activities in the inflorescence. Strigolactones have been shown to repress the shoot branching but seem to regulate panicle branching positively. Ethylene, brassinosteroids, and gibberellins regulate spikelet abortion and grain filling. Further studies on the optimization of endogenous hormonal levels can help in the expansion of the grain yield potential of rice. This review focuses on the molecular machinery, involving several genes and quantitative trait loci (QTL), operational in the plant that governs hormonal control and, in turn, gets governed by the hormones to regulate grain number and yield in rice.

Consumers' attitude to genetic engineering provides information to stakeholders who are interested in its adoption, which is essential considering the emerging growth of new breeding techniques. This short article analyses, compares, and describes the knowledge, doubts, and concerns of Europeans about biotechnology and genetic engineering over the past 20 years.

Bioeconomy development factors in the European Union and Poland

Bioeconomy is not an autonomous sector of the economy, but rather a complex mechanism involving agriculture, industry, biotechnology, service sectors and consumers. To measure the size of the bioeconomy in European Union (EU) countries, it is necessary to create appropriate indicators that allow it to be monitored with reference to its current state, growth rate and sector description. In many countries, including Poland, there is no complete information or data collection system to monitor bioeconomy development directly, e.g. in the Polish Central Statistical Office. In response to these needs, several groups of indicators related to the circular economy, sustainable development and Europe 2020 were created by the European Commission (EC) in the Eurostat database. These indicators can help monitoring of bioeconomy development in EU countries. The present study discusses factors for bioeconomy development through an analysis of their social, economic and environmental aspects, as well as showing the value of the selected indicators in the EU and Poland. In addition, a separate section is dedicated to public perception of bioeconomy and to legislation regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs). To date, many research studies have been reported on the public acceptance of bioeconomy issues in the EU, including renewable resources, biofuels, GMOs, bio-based products, food security and climate change. The awareness and perception of society on the bioeconomy, bio-based products and processes, and the sustainable use of resources can contribute to environmental sustainability, but intensified efforts are required to increase public acceptance.

Science-based approach to using growth rate to assess coral performance and restoration outcomes

One response to the coral reef crisis has been human intervention to enhance selection on the fittest corals through cultivation. This requires genotypes to be identified for intervention, with a primary basis for this choice being growth: corals that quickly grow on contemporary reefs might be future winners. To test for temporal stability of growth as a predictor of future performance, genotypes of the coral Porites spp. were grown in common gardens in Mo'orea, French Polynesia. Growth was measured every two to four months throughout 2018, and each period was used as a predictor of growth over the subsequent period. Area-normalized growth explained less than 29% of the variance in subsequent growth, but for biomass-normalized growth this increased to 45-60%, and was highest when summer growth was used to predict autumn growth. The capacity of initial growth to predict future performance is dependent on the units of measurement and the time of year in which it is measured. The final choice of traits to quantify performance must be informed through consideration of the species and the normalization that best capture the information inherent in the biological processes mediating variation in traits values.
