Disparate effects of DOM extracted from coastal seawaters and freshwaters on photodegradation of 2,4-Dihydroxybenzophenone

Dual role of dissolved black carbon in sensitized ofloxacin photooxidation: Mechanism and influential factors

Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is the more photoactive component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool, which plays a dual role in the photoconversion of aquatic contaminants, acting as both a photosensitizer and an inhibitor. However, little is known about the more systematic mechanism by which DBC exhibits a dual effect, which is closely related to the structure composition of DBC. In this study, the differences in characteristics of DBC obtained from 300 °C and 500 °C were compared via UV-vis absorption spectrum, Fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectra (3D-EEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and evaluated the promoting and inhibiting effects of DBC on ofloxacin (OFL) photodegradation. It was found that higher pyrolysis temperature reduced the UV absorbance, molecular weight, aromaticity, and phenolics of DBC while increasing the content of quinone/aromatic ketone and humic substances. Photochemical data showed that 3DBC*, 1O2 and ·OH were all participated in the DBC-mediated OFL photodegradation. Wherein, DBC300 (DBCT, where T = pyrolysis temperature) had strong light screening and dynamic quenching effect, but the formation ability of 3DBC*, 1O2 and ·OH was poor, which significantly retarded the photodegradation of OFL. While DBC500 exhibited a slight promotion effect due to its higher formation ability of reactive species and weak light screening effect. Moreover, DBC500 had higher steady-state concentration and (kOFL,3DBC⁎) than DBC300, which might be due to the higher contents of quinone/aromatic ketone and the lower contents of phenol in DBC500, thus enhancing the reactivity of 3DBC* and OFL. Our research systematically revealed the trade-off mechanism of DBC on the photodegradation of fluoroquinolones, and provided an important theoretical guidance for the photodegradation of fluoroquinolones under the evolution of DBC composition.

Effect of Dissolved Organic Matter on the Photodegradation of Decachlorobiphenyl (PCB-209) in Heterogeneous Systems: Experimental Analysis and Excited-State Theory Calculations

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can affect the transformation of pollutants through photosensitization, but most current research focuses on hydrophilic pollutants, making it such that less attention is paid to hydrophobic pollutants. In this paper, the effect and action mechanism of coexisting DOM on the photodegradation of decachlorobiphenyl (PCB-209) on suspended particles collected from the Yellow River were systematically investigated in a heterogeneous system using DOM standards and model compounds. Through molecular probe experiments, mass spectrometry analysis and theoretical calculations, we found that the excited triplet state of DOM (3DOM*) could excite PCB-209 to undergo dechlorination reaction. Due to the different modes of electron transition, the presence of carbonyl groups decreased the energy of 3DOM*, whereas the electron-donating groups made the energy of 3DOM* higher. DOM containing phenolic hydroxyl groups led to a higher steady-state concentration of •OH, and DOM containing phenyl ketone structures had a stronger ability to produce •O2-. Compared with aqueous •OH, •O2- produced from hydrophobic microregions could react more readily with PCB-209. This study deepens the understanding of the role of different functional groups of DOM in the photosensitized transformation of hydrophobic compounds.

Electron transfer mediated photo-Fenton-like synergistic catalysis of Fe,Cu-doped MIL-101 coupled with Ag3PO4: Quantitative evaluation and DFT calculations

Widespread use of tetracycline (TC) results in its persistent residue and bioaccumulation in aquatic environments, posing a high toxicity to non-target organisms. In this study, a bimetal-doped composite material Ag3PO4/MIL-101(Fe,Cu) has been designed for the treatment of TC in aqueous solutions. As the molar ratio of Fe/Cu in composite is 1:1, the obtained material AP/MFe1Cu1 is placed in an aqueous environment under visible light irradiation in the presence of 3 mM peroxydisulfate (PDS), which forms a photo-Fenton-like catalytic system that can completely degrade TC (10 mg/L) within 60 min. Further, the degradation rate constant (0.0668 min-1) is 5.66 and 7.34 times higher than that of AP/MFe and AP/MCu, respectively, demonstrating a significant advantage over single metal-doped catalysts. DFT calculations confirm the strong adsorption capacity and activation advantage of PDS on the composite surface. Therefore, the continuous photogenerated electrons (e-) accelerate the activation of PDS and the production of SO4•-, resulting in the stripping of abundant photogenerated h + for TC oxidation. Meanwhile, the internal circulation of FeⅢ/FeⅡ and CuⅡ/CuⅢ in composite also greatly enhances the photo-Fenton-like catalytic stability. According to the competitive dynamic experiments, SO4•- have the greatest contribution to TC degradation (58.93%), followed by 1O2 (23.80%). The degradation intermediates (products) identified by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS) technique indicate the involvement of various processes in TC degradation, such as dehydroxylation, deamination, N-demethylation, and ring opening. Furthermore, as the reaction proceeds, the toxicity of the intermediates produced during TC degradation gradually decreases, which can ensure the safety of the aquatic ecosystem. Overall, this work reveals the synergy mechanism of PDS catalysis and photocatalysis, as well as provides technical support for removal of TC-contaminated wastewater.

Light-induced degradation of dimethylmercury in different natural waters

Photo-induced degradation of dimethylmercury (DMHg) is considered to be an important source for the generation of methylmercury (MMHg). However, studies on DMHg photodegradation are scarce, and it is even debatable about whether DMHg can be degraded in natural waters. Herein, we found that both DMHg and MMHg could be photodegraded in three natural waters collected from the Yellow River Delta, while in pure water only DMHg photodegradation occurred under visible light irradiation. The effects of different environmental factors on DMHg photodegradation were investigated, and the underlying mechanisms were elucidated by density functional theory calculations and a series of control experiments. Our findings revealed that the DMHg degradation rate was higher in the tidal creek water compared to Yellow River, Yan Lake, and purified water. NO3-, NO2-, and DOM could promote the photodegradation with DOM and NO3- showing particularly strong positive effects. Different light sources were employed, and UV light was found to be more effective in DMHg photodegradation. Moreover, MMHg was detected during the photodegradation of DMHg, confirming that the photochemical demethylation of DMHg is a source of MMHg in sunlit water. This work may provide a novel mechanistic insight into the DMHg photodegradation in natural waters and enrich the study of the global biogeochemical cycle of Hg.

Effects of dissolved organic matter and halogen ions on phototransformation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aquatic environments

Photochemical reactions contribute to the attenuation and transformation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in surface natural waters. Nevertheless, effects of DOM and halogen ions on phototransformation of PPCPs remain elusive. This work selected disparate PPCPs as target pollutants to investigate their aquatic phototransformation processes. Results show that PPCPs containing multiple electron-donating groups (-OH, -NH2, -OR, etc.) are more reactive with photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs) such as triplet DOM (3DOM*), singlet oxygen (1O2), and reactive halogen species (RHSs), relative to PPCPs containing electron-withdrawing groups (-NOR, -COOR, -OCR, etc.). The generation of RHSs as a result of the coexistance of DOM and halide ions changed the contribution of PPRIs to the photochemical conversion of PPCPs during their migration from fresh water to seawater. For PPCPs (AMP, SMZ, PN, NOR, CIP, etc) with highly reactive groups toward RHSs, the generation of RHSs facilitated their photolysis in halide ion-rich waters, where Cl- plays a critical role in the photochemical transformation of PPCPs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that single electron transfer and H-abstraction are main reaction pathways of RHSs with the PPCPs. These results demonstate the irreplaceable roles of PPRIs and revealing the underlying reaction mechanisms during the phototransformation of PPCPs, which contributes to a better understanding of the environmental behaviors of PPCPs in complex aquatic environments.

Photo-production of excited triplet-state of dissolved organic matters in inland freshwater and coastal seawater

The excited triplet-state of dissolved organic matter (3DOM*) is a major reactive intermediate in sunlit waters. Its quantum yield is important in understanding the fate of organic micropollutants. The degradation efficiency of its chemical probe, 2,4,6-trimeythlphenol (fTMP), is generally used as a proxy of the quantum yield. However, fTMP has been described and modelled only for freshwater systems. Therefore, this study quantified fTMP in inland freshwater and coastal seawater sampled in Japan by conducting steady-state photochemical experiments. Optical properties of water were then used to model fTMP. Results indicated that the inland freshwater DOM originated mainly from terrestrial sources, while the coastal seawater DOM were microbial-dominated. On average, inland freshwater exhibited lower fTMP (61.2 M-1) than coastal seawater (79.7 M-1) and the coastal seawater exhibited significant variations in the proportion of high-energy 3DOM* (> 250 kJ/mol). In addition, E2:E3 (ratio of absorbance at 254 to 365 nm) was positively correlated with fTMP of inland freshwater, coastal seawater, and the overall dataset. Catchment conditions such as forest coverage also influenced the production of 3DOM* and high-energy 3DOM* in inland freshwater. Furthermore, the developed models estimated fTMP based on the optical properties of both freshwater and seawater, providing valuable insights about 3DOM* photochemistry in the aquatic environment.

Recent advances in the role of dissolved organic matter during antibiotics photodegradation in the aquatic environment

The presence of residual antibiotics in the environment is a prominent issue. Photodegradation behavior is an important way of antibiotics reduction, which is closely related to dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water. The review provides an overview of the latest advancements in the field. Classification, characterization of DOM, and the dominant mechanisms for antibiotic photodegradation were discussed. Furthermore, it summarized and compared the effects of DOM on different antibiotics photodegradation. Moreover, the review comprehensively considered the factors influencing the photodegradation of antibiotics in the aquatic environment, including the characteristics of light, temperature, dosage of DOM, concentration of antibiotics, solution pH, and the presence of coexisting ions. Finally, potential directions were proposed for the development of predictive models for the photodegradation of antibiotics. Based on the review of existing literature, this paper also considered several pathways for the future study of antibiotic photodegradation. This study allows for a better understanding of the DOM's environmental role and provides important new insights into the photochemical fate of antibiotics in the aquatic environment.

Phototransformation of halobenzoquinones in aqueous solution under the simulate sunlight: Kinetics, mechanism and products

Halobenzoquinones (HBQs) are a novel family of unregulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Little is known about their phototransformation activities in natural water. Here, five HBQs with various halogenated substituent types, numbers, and structures positions were selected to investigate the kinetics of degradation in aqueous solutions at various concentrations and in the presence of common environmental variables (Cl-, NO2-, and humic acid). The results indicated that dichloride and dibromo-substituted HBQs were photolyzed, whereas tetrachloro-substituted HBQs showed little degradation. The photolysis rate constant (k) of HBQs decreased with increasing initial concentration. The presence of NO2- and Cl- promoted the degradation of HBQs mainly through the formation of hydroxyl radical (•OH), which were confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). In contrast, humic acid played a negative role on HBQs transformation due to the adsorption and quenching reactions. Possible conversion pathways for HBQs were proposed based on the identification of two major photodegradation products, hydroxylated HBQs and halogenated-benzenetriol, as well as reactive free radicals. This study provided meaningful insights into the environmental fates and risk assessments of HBQs in natural aquatic system.

Degradation of organic UV filters in the water environment: A concise review on the mechanism, toxicity, and technologies

Organic ultraviolet filters (OUVFs) have been used globally for the past 20 years. Given that OUVFs can be quickly released from sunscreens applied on human skins, they have been frequently detected in aquatic environments and organisms. Some byproducts of OUVFs might be more recalcitrant and toxic than their parent compounds. To further assess the toxicity and potential risk of OUVFs' byproducts, it is necessary to determine the fate of OUVFs and identify their transformation products. This review summarizes and analyzes pertinent literature and reports in the field of OUVFs research. These published research works majorly focus on the degradation mechanisms of OUVFs in aquatic environments, their intermediates/byproducts, and chlorination reaction. Photodegradation (direct photolysis, self-sensitive photolysis and indirect photolysis) and biodegradation are the main transformation pathways of OUVFs through natural degradation. To remove residual OUVFs' pollutants from aqueous environments, novel physicochemical and biological approaches have been developed in recent years. Advanced oxidation, ultrasound, and bio-based technologies have been proven to eliminate OUVFs from wastewaters. In addition, the disinfection mechanism and the byproducts (DBPs) of various OUVFs in swimming pools are discussed in this review. Besides, knowledge gaps and future research directions in this field of study are also mentioned.

Photo-oxidation of Micro- and Nanoplastics: Physical, Chemical, and Biological Effects in Environments

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are attracting increasing attention due to their persistence and potential ecological risks. This review critically summarizes the effects of photo-oxidation on the physical, chemical, and biological behaviors of MNPs in aquatic and terrestrial environments. The core of this paper explores how photo-oxidation-induced surface property changes in MNPs affect their adsorption toward contaminants, the stability and mobility of MNPs in water and porous media, as well as the transport of pollutants such as organic pollutants (OPs) and heavy metals (HMs). It then reviews the photochemical processes of MNPs with coexisting constituents, highlighting critical factors affecting the photo-oxidation of MNPs, and the contribution of MNPs to the phototransformation of other contaminants. The distinct biological effects and mechanism of aged MNPs are pointed out, in terms of the toxicity to aquatic organisms, biofilm formation, planktonic microbial growth, and soil and sediment microbial community and function. Furthermore, the research gaps and perspectives are put forward, regarding the underlying interaction mechanisms of MNPs with coexisting natural constituents and pollutants under photo-oxidation conditions, the combined effects of photo-oxidation and natural constituents on the fate of MNPs, and the microbiological effect of photoaged MNPs, especially the biotransformation of pollutants.

Estimation of the riverine input of organic ultraviolet filters (OUVFs) from the Pearl River Estuary to the South China Sea during the early Covid-19 pandemic

Organic ultraviolet filters (OUVFs) are functional ingredients used in cosmetics to protect skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This study presents recent findings on the distribution of OUVFs in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), located in southern China. This investigation was conducted during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic when the stay-at-home policy was implemented. Analysis revealed the presence of OUVFs in both the surface and bottom water samples collected from eight major outlets of the Pearl River. The OUVFs were detected in both the dissolved phase and suspended particulate matter, with a total concentration ranging from 7.19 ± 6.54 to 20.5 ± 9.62 ng/L. Notably, OUVFs' concentrations in the study period were significantly lower compared to those reported before the pandemic. This implies that effective reduction of OUVF emissions can be achieved through usage reduction combined with the management of direct discharge and appropriate treatment by urban wastewater treatment facilities. During the study period, the annual release of OUVFs was approximately 12.6 kg/1000 people/year, with the greatest contribution from the Hu Men outlet. Consequently, it is imperative to consider the potential ecological risks associated with the release of OUVFs from the PRE into the marine environment, particularly with the potential for an accompanying rebound in risk upon the lifting of restrictions on outdoor activities in the post Covid-19 time.

Adsorption Performance and Mechanisms of Tetracycline on Clay Minerals in Estuaries and Nearby Coastal Areas

Clay minerals in sediments have strong adsorption capacities for pollutants, but their role in the distribution of antibiotics in estuaries and nearby coastal areas is unclear. We evaluated the clay mineral montmorillonite (SWy-2) adsorption capacity for tetracycline (TC). We assessed the adsorption capacity of SWy-2 for TC by measuring the removal percentage of 30 mg/L TC over time. The effects of pH and ionic strength on the TC adsorption onto SWy-2 were investigated. We analyzed the kinetics of TC adsorption using a pseudo-second-order model and determined the adsorption isotherm using the Langmuir equation. SWy-2 particles were characterized using zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses before and after TC adsorption. The removal percentage of 30 mg/L TC by SWy-2 reached 70.76% within 0.25 h and gradually increased to 78.64% at 6 h. TC adsorption was influenced by pH and ionic strength, where low pH enhanced and high ionic strength reduced the adsorption. The kinetics of TC adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherm adhered to the Langmuir equation. The saturated adsorption capacity (qmax) of SWy-2 for TC was 227.27 mg/g. Zeta potential, FTIR, and XRD analyses confirmed that electrostatic interactions and chemical bonds played a significant role in the TC adsorption by SWy-2. SWy-2 clay mineral exhibits a substantial adsorption capacity for TC, indicating its potential as an effective sorbent to mitigate antibiotic contamination in estuaries and nearby coastal areas. The observed effects of pH and ionic strength on TC adsorption have implications for the environmental fate and transport of antibiotics. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm equation provide valuable insights into the adsorption behavior and capacity of TC on SWy-2. Characterization analyses support the involvement of electrostatic interactions and chemical bonds in the SWy-2-TC adsorption mechanism.

DOM optical parameters as a tool to understand degradation of phenolic contaminants of emerging concern

Composition and source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water influence the rate of production of reactive intermediates (RIs), affecting the photodegradation of phenolic contaminants of emerging concern (PhCECs). However, this relationship has not been fully quantified. Here, for the first time, we propose a mechanism for photodegradation of a surrogate of PhCECs, p-cresol, in different DOM standard solutions under simulated sunlight irradiation. More importantly, the correlation of DOM optical parameters and p-cresol photodegradation kinetic parameters was determined by Pearson correlation. Results showed that indirect photodegradation was the only degradation pathway for p-cresol, mainly through reaction with excited triplet state of dissolved organic matter (3DOM*). Singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) hindered degradation of p-cresol by decreasing the steady state concentration of 3DOM*. Moreover, less aromatic and smaller molecular size DOM showed higher steady-state concentration and quantum yield of 1O2, and 3DOM*, resulting in faster p-cresol photodegradation. Finally, 7 out of 8 optical parameters showed strong correlation with the p-cresol photodegradation rate constant. The mechanism and correlations found are a potential tool to predict PhCECs photodegradation in water using DOM optical parameters.

Effect of dissolved organic matter on sulfachloropyridazine photolysis in liquid water and ice

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an ubiquitous component of environmental snow and ice, which can absorb light and produce reactive species (RS) and thus is of importance in ice photochemistry. The photodegradation of sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) without and with DOM present in liquid water and ice were investigated in this study. The photodegradation rate constants for SCP without DOM present was enhanced by 52.5 % in ice relative to liquid water, likely due to the enhanced role of SCP self-sensitized RS in ice. DOM significantly promoted SCP photolysis in both liquid water and ice, which was mainly attributed to roles of singlet oxygen (1O2) and triplet excited-state DOM (3DOM*) generated from DOM. 1O2 production from DOM was significantly enhanced in ice relative to liquid water. Hydroxyl radical (•OH) production from DOM in ice was similar to those in liquid water. Enhancement in 3DOM* production in ice was observed at low DOM concentrations. Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (SRFA) and Elliott Soil Humic Acid (ESHA) exhibited differences in RS production in liquid water and ice, as well as in enhancement of 1O2 and 3DOM* produced in ice relative to liquid water. DOM induced reaction pathways of SCP different from those without DOM present, and therefore affected toxicity of SCP photoproducts. There were differences in photodegradation pathways of SCP as well as in toxicity of SCP photoproducts between liquid water and ice.

Photolysis and photo-enhanced toxicity of three novel designed neonicotinoids: Impact of novel modifying groups

Three novel neonicotinoids (cycloxaprid, flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor) were designed to reduce the biotoxicity for non-target organisms. These neonicotinoids were photolyzed under light radiation, but it was unclear for the photo-enhanced toxicity and influences of the novel modifying group of the three neonicotinoids. The photolysis and photo-enhanced toxicity experiments were performed for the three neonicotinoids, coupled with quantum chemistry calculation, the mechanisms of photolysis, photo-enhanced toxicity and the influences of novel modifying groups were analyzed. The results showed the photolysis pathways were enriched as compared with previous neonicotinoids due to the composition of modifying groups, singlet oxygen and hydroxyl participated the photolysis of cycloxaprid and flupyradifurone. All tested neonicotinoids exhibited photo-enhanced toxicity to Vibrio fischeri. Due to the difference of photolysis mechanism and toxicity to V. fischeri, the photo-enhanced toxicity curves showed diverse variation when histidine, tert-butanol or dissolved organic matters was in presence of the test solutions. The impact of novel modifying groups over photolysis and photo-enhanced toxicity were analyzed based on the comparison with previous neonicotinoids, theoretically predicted UV-Vis spectra and photo-physical/chemical property descriptors. The data showed the composition of novel modifying group increased the light absorption and photo-chemical activities for the three neonicotinoids.

Apparent quantum yield for photo-production of singlet oxygen in reservoirs and its relation to the water matrix

Man-made reservoirs are important for human daily lives and offer different functions, however they are contaminated due to anthropogenic activities. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) from each reservoir is unique in composition, which further determines its photo-reactivity. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the photo-reactivity of reservoir DOM in terms of the quantum yield for photo-production of singlet oxygen (Ф1O2). We sampled surface water of 50 reservoirs in Japan and determined their Ф1O2 using simulated sunlight together with bulk water analysis. Their Ф1O2 ranged from 1.46 × 10-2 to 6.21 × 10-2 (mean, 2.55 × 10-2), which was identical to those of lakes and rivers reported in the literature, but lower than those of wetland water and wastewater. High-energy triplet-state of DOM accounted for 59.4% of the 1O2 production in the reservoir water on average. Among the bulk water properties, the spectral slope of wavelength from 350 to 400 nm (S350-400) was statistically detected as the most important predictor for Ф1O2. Furthermore, the multiple linear regression model employed S350-400 and the biological index as predictors with no intercorrelations and reasonable accuracy (r2 = 0.86), while the random forest model showed a better accuracy (r2 = 0.90). Overall, these major findings are beneficial for understanding the photo-reactivity of reservoir waters.

Insights into the mechanisms of natural organic matter on the photodegradation of indomethacin under natural sunlight and simulated light irradiation

Indomethacin (INDO) is an antipyretic and analgesic pharmaceutical that has been widely detected in the aquatic environment. Photodegradation is an essential pathway for removal of INDO in sunlit surface water, however the effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on its photodegradation and the ecotoxicity of photodegradation products are largely unknown. In this study, the effect of DOM on the photodegradation of INDO under both natural and simulated light irradiation was studied. The results showed that indirect photolysis is the main photodegradation pathway of INDO in presence of DOM where 3DOM* plays the most important promoting role. Compared to commercial DOM (SRNOM and SRFA), DOM extracted from local-lake water (SLDOM) promoted the photodegradation to the highest extent. Although the steady-state concentrations of 3DOM* of SRNOM and SRFA were higher than SLDOM, their inhibition effect surpassed SLDOM namely higher light screening effect and phenolic antioxidant concentrations. The photodegradation pathway in pure water is different from that in DOM system where the decarboxylation of acetic acid chain and the oxidative fracture of indole ring are the main degradation pathways. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation further supports the proposed degradation pathways of INDO. ECOSAR calculation showed that the toxicity of INDO photodegradation products to aquatic organisms may maintain or even exceed its parent compound. Therefore, comprehensive understanding of the impact of DOM on the photodegradation of INDO is of crucial significance for evaluating its ecological risk in the natural environment.

Photochemical behaviors of dissolved organic matter in aquatic environment: Generation, characterization, influencing factors and practical application

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) widely exists in aquatic environment and plays a critical role in environmental photochemical reaction. The photochemical behaviors of DOM in sunlit surface waters have received widely attention because its photochemical effects for some coexisted substances in aquatic environment, especially for organic micropollutants degradation. Therefore, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the photochemical properties and environmental effects of DOM, we reviewed the influence of sources on the structure and composition of DOM with relevant identified techniques to analysis functional groups. Additionally, identification and quantification for reactive intermediates are discussed with a focus on influencing factors to produce reactive intermediates by DOM under solar irradiation. These reactive intermediates can promote the photodegradation of organic micropollutants in the environmental system. In future, attention should be paid to the photochemical properties of DOM and environmental effects in real environmental system and development of advanced techniques to study DOM.

Determination of excited triplet states of dissolved organic matter using chemical probes: A comparative and mechanistic study

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycle in natural waters. The determination and characterization of the excited triplet state of DOM (³DOM*) have attracted much attention recently. However, the underlying differences of determined ³DOM* through different pathways are not yet fully understood. In this study, the differences and underlying mechanisms of the determined ³DOM* using 2,4-hexadien-1-ol (HDO) through an energy transfer pathway and 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) through an electron transfer pathway, were investigated. The results showed that the determined quantum yields of ³DOM* (Φ_3DOM*) for four commercial and four isolated local DOMs are different using HDO ((0.04 ± 0.00) × 10^-2 to (2.9 ± 0.17) × 10^-2)) and TMP ((0.08 ± 0.01) × 10^-2 to (1.2 ± 0.17) × 10^-2), respectively. For 17 DOM-analogs, significant differences were also observed with the quantum yields of their ³DOM* determined using HDO (Φ_HDO) and the triplet-state quantum yield coefficients determined using TMP (f_TMP). It indicates the different reactivity of TMP and HDO with the excited triplet of the chromophores with different structures within the isolated DOM. Based on the experimental and predicted values of f_TMP and Φ_HDO for different DOM-analogs, the impact of substituents on differences in ³DOM* values were further revealed. These results demonstrated that the levels of ³DOM* depended on the chemical functionalities present in the DOM-analogs.

Enhanced degradation of tetracycline under natural sunlight through the synergistic effect of Ag3PO4/MIL-101(Fe) photocatalysis and Fenton catalysis: Mechanism, pathway, and toxicity assessment

Here, we show that the adverse environmental and health effects of tetracycline (TC) can be efficiently reduced by encapsulating Ag₃PO₄ into MIL-101(Fe) to construct a Ag₃PO₄/MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction composite through advanced oxidation processes, such as Fenton catalysis, photocatalysis, and photo-Fenton catalysis. Notably, the reaction can be driven by natural sunlight and does not require any artificial energy source. Remarkably, the optimal degradation of TC can be achieved under different compositions of the composite system through photocatalysis and photo-Fenton catalysis. For photo-Fenton catalysis, the maximum degradation rate of TC (2.5730 min^-1) is achieved when the mass ratio of MIL-101(Fe) to Ag₃PO₄ in the composite is 5:1, which is 31.65- and 3.12-fold of that in the Ag₃PO₄ + PDS + Sunlight and MIL-101(Fe) + PDS+ Sunlight catalyst systems, respectively. Moreover, the internal conversion of matrix during photocatalysis and Fenton catalysis processes inhibits the photocorrosion of Ag₃PO₄ and improves the reusability of the composite. Furthermore, it is found that both radical and non-radical species participate in the TC degradation. Besides, the degradation products and catalytic mechanism of Ag₃PO₄ and Ag₃PO₄/MIL-101(Fe) systems are explored. The toxicity evaluation results suggest that the intermediates produced during Ag₃PO₄/MIL-101(Fe) catalysis have a lower biotoxicity than those produced during Ag₃PO₄ catalysis. Overall, this work provides an effective strategy to inhibit the inherent photocorrosion of Ag₃PO₄ and establishes an efficient catalytic system for the treatment of organic-contaminated wastewater under natural sunlight conditions.

Photochemical reaction of glucocorticoids in aqueous solution: Influencing factors and photolysis products

Glucocorticoids (GCs), as endocrine disruptors, have attracted widespread attention due to their impacts on organisms' growth, development, and reproduction. In the current study, the photodegradation of budesonide (BD) and clobetasol propionate (CP), as targeted GCs, was investigated including the effects of initial concentrations and typical environmental factors (Cl^-, NO₂^-, Fe³⁺, and fulvic acid (FA)). The results showed that the degradation rate constants (k) were 0.0060 and 0.0039 min^-1 for BD and CP at concentration of 50 μg·L^-1, and increased with the initial concentrations. Under the addition of Cl^-, NO₂^-, and Fe³⁺ to the GCs/water system, the photodegradation rate was decreased with increasing Cl^-, NO₂^-, and Fe³⁺ concentrations, which were in contrast to the addition of FA. Electron resonance spectroscopy (EPR) analysis and the radical quenching experiments verified that GCs could transition to the triplet excited states of GCs (³GCs*) for direct photolysis under irradiation to undergo, while NO₂^-, Fe³⁺, and FA could generate ·OH to induce indirect photolysis. According to HPLC-Q-TOF MS analysis, the structures of the three photodegradation products of BD and CP were elucidated, respectively, and the phototransformation pathways were inferred based on the product structures. These findings help to grasp the fate of synthetic GCs in the environment and contribute to the understanding of their ecological risks.

Relationship between photolysis mechanism and photo-enhanced toxicity to Vibrio Fischeri for neonicotinoids with cyano-amidine and nitroguanidine structures

Neonicotinoids are widely used pesticides that contaminate aquatic environments. Although these chemicals can be photolyzed under sunlight radiation, it is unclear for the relationship between photolysis mechanism and toxicity change in aquatic organisms. This study aims to determine the photo-enhanced toxicity of four neonicotinoids with different main structures (acetamiprid, and thiacloprid for cyano-amidine structure, imidacloprid and imidaclothiz for nitroguanidine). To Achieve the goal, photolysis kinetics, effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) scavengers on photolysis rates, photoproducts, and photo-enhanced toxicity to Vibrio fischeri were investigated for four neonicotinoids. The results showed direct photolysis plays a key role in the photo-degradation of imidacloprid and imidaclothiz (photolysis rate constants are 7.85 × 10^-3 and 6.48 × 10^-3 min^-1, respectively), while the photosensitization process of acetamiprid and thiacloprid was dominated by ·OH reactions and transformation (photolysis rate constants are 1.16 × 10^-4 and 1.21 × 10^-4 min^-1, respectively). All four neonicotinoid insecticides exerted photo-enhanced toxicity to Vibrio fischeri, indicating photolytic product(s) posed greater toxicity than their parent compounds. The addition of DOM and ROS scavengers influenced photo-chemical transformation rates of parent compounds and their intermediates, leading to diverse effects on photolysis rates and photo-enhanced toxicity for the four insecticides as a result of different photo-chemical transformation processes. Based upon the detection of chemical structures of intermediates and Gaussian calculations, we observed different photo-enhanced toxicity mechanisms for the four neonicotinoid insecticides. Molecular docking was used to analyze the toxicity mechanism of parent compounds and photolytic products. A theoretical model was subsequently employed to describe the variability of toxicity response to each of the four neonicotinoids.

Impacts of properties of dissolved organic matters on indirect photodegradation of genistein

Excited triplet states of dissolved organic matters (³DOM*) are one of the most important photochemically-produced reactive intermediates leading to transformation of organic contaminants. However, relationships of photodegradation kinetics of different dissociation states of phenolic organic contaminants with chemical components or properties of ³DOM* are largely unknown. In this study, roles of ³DOM* in photodegradation of polyhydroxy phenolic genistein (Gs) at pH 5, 8 and 12 were investigated taking five kinds of DOM from different sources as examples. Relationships between photodegradation kinetics constants and DOM properties were built. Results showed that the contributions of direct ³DOM*-induced reactions to the total indirect photodegradation of Gs and second-order reaction rate constants (k_DOM,Gs) of Gs with ³DOM* increased with pH increases. This was mainly attributed to decreases in vertical ionization energy of Gs at higher pH, endowing Gs with stronger electron donating capacities. k_DOM,Gs was found to positively correlate with the specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm, reflecting aromaticity of DOM, and negatively correlate with the absorbance ratio at 254 and 365 nm and contents of dissociated acidic functional groups of DOM, representing molecular weights of DOM, antioxidants and the repulsive forces between ³DOM* and Gs. This study provided a new insight into relationship between DOM properties and indirect photodegradation kinetics of phenolic contaminants in aquatic environments.

Photodegradation of organic micropollutants in aquatic environment: Importance, factors and processes

Photochemical reactions widely occur in the aquatic environment and play fundamental roles in aquatic ecosystems. In particular, solar-induced photodegradation is efficient for many organic micropollutants (OMPs), especially those that cannot undergo hydrolysis or biodegradation, and thus can mitigate chemical pollution. Recent reports indicate that photodegradation may play a more important role than biodegradation in many OMP transformations in the aquatic environment. Photodegradation can be influenced by the water matrix such as pH, inorganic ions, and dissolved organic matter (DOM). The effect of the water matrix such as DOM on photodegradation is complex, and new insights concerning the disparate effects of DOM have recently been reported. In addition, the photodegradation process is also influenced by physical factors such as latitude, water depth, and temporal variations in sunlight as these factors determine the light conditions. However, it remains challenging to gain an overview of the importance of photodegradation in the aquatic environment because the reactions involved are diverse and complex. Therefore, this review provides a concise summary of the importance of photodegradation and the major processes related to the photodegradation of OMPs, with particular attention given to recent progress on the major reactions of DOM. In addition, major knowledge gaps in this field of environmental photochemistry are highlighted.

Photochemical behavior of constructed wetlands-derived dissolved organic matter and its effects on Bisphenol A photodegradation in secondary treated wastewater

Free water surface flow (FWS) constructed wetlands (CWs) have been broadly applied for polishing secondary treated effluents. Dissolved organic matter derived from FWS CWs (WDOM) plays key roles in contaminants transformations. Conversely, photodegradation could shape the quantity and quality of WDOM, thereby affecting its roles in the photolysis of organic micropollutants (OMPs). Nevertheless, whether and how solar irradiation-induced photodegradation modify the properties of WDOM, and the effects of WDOM on the photodegradation of OMPs remain unclear. This study elucidates the photochemical behavior of two WDOM isolated from field-scale FWS CWs for effluent polishing under simulated sunlight irradiation using spectroscopic tools and high-resolution mass spectra. Furthermore, the roles of WDOM in the photodegradation of Bisphenol A (BPA), as a representative endocrine-disrupting compound (EDC), were comprehensively investigated. Solar irradiation was demonstrated to lower the molecular weight and aromaticity of WDOM, as well as weaken its light absorption. Ultrahigh-resolution mass spectra further confirmed that aromatic and unsaturated structures were susceptible to solar irradiation-induced photodegradation reactions. Subsequently, less aromatic and more saturated structures eventually formed under sunlight irradiation, consistent with the result from spectroscopic characterization. The reactive species produced from WDOM significantly enhanced the photodegradation of BPA with the k_obs noticeably increasing 4-fold compared with the k_obs for direct photolysis. Additionally, ³WDOM* was identified as the dominant reactive species leading to the photolysis of BPA in the presence of WDOM. These findings improve understanding of the phototransformation behavior of WDOM under sunlight irradiation and the roles that WDOM plays in the photochemical fate of coexisting OMPs in CWs treatment systems.

Photodegradation of propranolol in surface waters: An important role of carbonate radical and enhancing toxicity phenomenon

Antihypertensive propranolol (PRO) is frequently detected in surface waters and has adverse effects on aquatic organisms. In this study, its photochemical fate in surface water with the aspect of kinetics, products and toxicity were investigated employing steady-state photochemistry experiments and ecotoxicity tests. The results showed that photodegradation of PRO was enhanced in river water than that in phosphate buffer where dissolved organic matter (DOM), NO₃^-, and HCO₃^- played important roles. DOM accelerated the photodegradation mainly through generation of excited triplet-state DOM while NO₃^- played dual roles in the photodegradation. The reaction between excited triplet-state PRO and HCO₃^- can generate carbonate radical (CO₃^·-) to promote the photodegradation. The second-order reaction rate constant between PRO and CO₃^·- was determined to be (3.4 ± 0.8) × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1. Eight photodegradation products were identified in the studied river water sample. Finally, the toxicity evaluated by Vibrio fischeri increased after photodegradation and three photodegradation products were responsible for the increasing toxicity, which was concluded from the significant correlation between toxicity parameters and quantity of the photodegradation products.

Effect of chlorination on the characteristics of effluent organic matter and the phototransformation of sulfamethoxazole in secondary wastewater

Chlorination is the most common disinfection technology used to treat wastewater effluent discharged into receiving aquatic environments. Effluent organic matter (EfOM) abundant in wastewater is a well-known photosensitizer and it greatly affects phototransformation of antibiotics in water. However, effects of chlorination on the characteristics and photochemical properties of EfOM have not been studied in sufficient detail. This paper investigated effects of chlorination on the characteristics of EfOM, and its impact on the phototransformation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Correlations between the EfOM characteristics and steady-state concentrations of reactive intermediates (RI) formed in the system were established. Chlorination was shown to preferentially remove the aromatic protein-like substances in EfOM, and the incorporation of chlorine into followed by the cleavage of the aromatic rings in EfOM molecules led to the formation of low molecular aliphatic organic matter. Both unaltered and chlorinated EfOM promoted the photodegradation of SMX whose rate constant in the wastewater was 1.32-1.65 times higher than that in pH 8 phosphate buffer. However, the rate of SMX photodegradation decreased at higher chlorination concentrations. The photodegradation of SMX was found to proceed through direct photolysis and oxidation by the RIs generated from EfOM and the self-sensitization of SMX. The steady-state concentrations of ·OH, ¹O₂ and ³EfOM* were 2.15-5.50 × 10^-16, 0.42-1.51 × 10^-13, and 2.54-5.82 × 10^-14 M in unaltered and chlorinated wastewater. The steady-state concentrations of ·OH were well correlated with the removal of the fluorescence regional integration (ΔFRI) for humic-like and soluble microbial products (SMPs), while the photodegradation rate constant of SMX and the steady-state concentration of ¹O₂ and ³EfOM* showed good correlations with ΔFRI for tryptophan and fulvic-like substances. Six transformation products (TPs) of SMX were identified. These findings provide new insights into the photochemical properties of chlorinated EfOM in the aquatic environments and its roles in the degradation of antibiotics and other trace-level pharmaceuticals.

The binding characteristics of sediment-derived dissolved organic matter with ceftazidime: a microstructural and spectroscopic correlation study

This research focused on the characterization of sediment-derived dissolved organic matter (SDOM) extracted from sediment of Yellow River and the binding behaviors of ceftazidime (CAZ) with the presence of SDOM. The morphology, surface composition and structure of SDOM and the complexation between SDOM and CAZ in terms of component features, binding capacity and sequence were studied by multiple approaches. Results showed that SDOM was in situ autochthonous-dominated with a low weight-average molecular weight and aromaticity (the value of S_R was 2.523). The multiple morphological characteristics, high surface oxygen contents (53.49%) and more aliphatic (H/C = 1.91) of SDOM were further confirmed. Studies on SDOM-CAZ interaction suggested that the functional groups and chemical compositions of SDOM were susceptible to CAZ. In more detail, the aromatic protons and aliphatic protons of CAZ impacted significantly, and the binding between CAZ and SDOM might relate to noncovalent. The protein-like fractions were considered to be the primary participant with 49% fractions lost and the aromatics and amides as mainly active site interaction with CAZ. These findings have significant implications on the environmental fate of cephalosporin antibiotics and that of sediment-derived DOM.

Dissolved Organic Matter Enhanced the Aggregation and Oxidation of Nanoplastics under Simulated Sunlight Irradiation in Water

Nanoplastics (NPs) have become a new type of pollutant of high concern that is ubiquitous in aqueous environments. However, the transport and transformation of NPs in natural waters are not yet fully understood. In this study, the aggregation and photooxidation of NPs were assessed with nanosized polystyrene (PS) as an example, and the effects of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were investigated with Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) as representative DOM. The results showed that simulated sunlight irradiation exhibited negligible effects on the aggregation of PS, while SRFA enhanced its heteroaggregation through hydrophobic interactions. In SRFA solutions, photooxidation of PS with a particle size of 200 nm was observed, which led to an increase in the O/C ratio on its surface at a rate of (2.20 ± 0.40) × 10^-2 h^-1. This indicates the promotional effect of SRFA on the oxidation of nanosized PS, which is attributed to the generation of the excited triplet state (³SRFA*), hydroxyl radicals (^•OH), and singlet oxygen (¹O₂). Among these reactive species, ¹O₂ played a crucial role in the oxidation of PS. The findings in this study are helpful for an in-depth understanding of the environmental behavior of NPs in natural waters.

Direct and nitrite-sensitized indirect photolysis of effluent-derived phenolic contaminants under UV254 irradiation

UV₂₅₄ photolysis has increasingly been utilized for disinfection of water-born pathogens in wastewater. During disinfection, wastewater-derived trace organic contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), may be subjected to direct photolysis and indirect photolysis sensitized by wastewater constituents such as nitrite (NO₂^-). Herein, we reported the direct photolysis and NO₂^--sensitized indirect photolysis of four phenolic contaminants commonly observed in wastewaters (i.e., bisphenol A (BPA), acetaminophen (ATP), salbutamol (SAL), and 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone (BP1)). Spectroscopic characterization and quantum yield measurement were carried out to evaluate the photochemical reactivity of these phenolic compounds. In NO₂^--sensitized photolysis, the relative contribution of direct and indirect photolysis was quantified by light screening factor calculation and radical quenching studies. The experimental results highlight the important roles of HO˙ and NO₂˙ in the NO₂^--sensitized photolysis of phenolic compounds. A series of intermediate products, including hydroxylated, nitrated, nitrosated, dimerized, and alkyl chain cleavage products, were identified by solid phase extraction (SPE) combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) analyses. On the basis of identified products, the underlying mechanisms and transformation pathways for NO₂^--sensitized photolysis of these phenolic compounds were elucidated. The second-order rate constants of BPA, SAL, BP1 with NO₂˙ were calculated to be 2.25 × 10⁴, 1.35 × 10⁴ and 2.44 × 10⁴ M^-1 s^-1, respectively, by kinetic modeling. Suwanee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) played complex roles in the direct and NO₂^--sensitized photolysis of phenolic compounds by serving as a photosensitizer, light screening and radical quenching agent. Wastewater constituents, such as NO₃^- and EfOM, could accelerate direct and NO₂^--sensitized photolysis of BPA, SAL, and BP1 in the wastewater matrix. Our results suggest that NO₂^- at the WWTP effluent-relevant level can sensitize the photolysis of effluent-derived phenolic contaminants during the UV₂₅₄ disinfection process; however, the formation of potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic nitrated/nitrosated derivatives should be scrutinized.

Antibiotics in mariculture systems: A review of occurrence, environmental behavior, and ecological effects

Antibiotics are widely applied to prevent and treat diseases occurred in mariculture. The often-open nature of mariculture production systems has led to antibiotic residue accumulation in the culturing and adjacent environments, which can adversely affect aquatic ecosystems, and even human. This review summarizes the occurrence, environmental behavior, and ecological effects of antibiotics in mariculture systems based on peer-reviewed papers. Forty-five different antibiotics (categorized into ten groups) have been detected in mariculture systems around the world, which is far greater than the number officially allowed. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics is relatively high among major producing countries in Asia, which highlights the need for stricter enforcement of regulations and policies and effective antibiotic removal methods. Compared with other environmental systems, some environmental characteristics of mariculture systems, such as high salinity and dissolved organic matter (DOM) content, can affect the migration and transformation processes of antibiotics. Residues of antibiotics favor the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Antibiotics and ARGs alter microbial communities and biogeochemical cycles, as well as posing threats to marine organisms and human health. This review may provide a valuable summary of the effects of antibiotics on mariculture systems.

Comparative analysis on the photolysis kinetics of four neonicotinoid pesticides and their photo-induced toxicity to Vibrio Fischeri: Pathway and toxic mechanism

Neonicotinoids are widely used pesticides all over the world and pose severe water pollution. Although they can be degraded via absorbing sunlight, few attentions have been paid to the environmental risks of their photolysis products. In this paper, the photo-toxicity was investigated for four neonicotinoids (dinotefuran, nitenpyram, thiamethoxam and clothianidin) based on a series of experiments (i.e., photolysis kinetics, radical scavenging, bioluminescent inhibition test to Vibrio Fischeri and intermediate identification) and in-silico calculation of photolysis pathway. The results show that direct photolysis dominates the photolysis of the four neonicotinoids under simulated sunlight radiation. The bioluminescent inhibition kinetics shows that all four neonicotinoids have photo-induced toxicity to V. fischeri, but with different light-induced responses. Scavenging radicals (·OH and ¹O₂) will decrease the photo-induced toxicity of all the four neonicotinoids, indicating radicals play important roles to the photo-chemical reactions of intermediates. Dissolved organic matters exhibit slightly shading effect to the photolysis rates of four parent compounds. However, the ROSs generated by DOM can accelerate the photo-chemical reactions of intermediates, leading to different photo-induced toxicity in present of DOM. According to the detected intermediates and Gaussian calculations, there are different photolysis pathways and mechanisms for the four neonicotinoids. The calculation for photo-sensitization reactions with ³O₂ indicates that both energy transfer reactions and electron transfer reactions can be produced under simulated sunlight radiation, which further consolidate that reactive oxygen species are involved in the photolysis process. A theoretical model has been developed to explain the toxicity variations of four neonicotinoids in different aqueous conditions.

Photo-induced degradation and toxicity change of decabromobiphenyl ethers (BDE-209) in water: Effects of dissolved organic matter and halide ions

BDE-209 is a widely used brominated flame retardant that is ubiquitous in the aquatic environment, especially in marine water. However, photodegradation of BDE-209 in seawater is still not fully understood. In this work, the photodegradation kinetics of BDE-209 in water was studied and the effects of seawater dissolved organic matter (S-DOM) and halide ions (Cl^-, Br^-) were evaluated. S-DOM inhibited the degradation of BDE-209 through dynamic quenching and light shielding effect. However, with the coexistence of S-DOM, Cl^- and Br^-, the photodegradation of BDE-209 was significantly promoted. The promotional effect is attributed to the generation of excited triplet state S-DOM, singlet oxygen, and reactive halogen radicals. The results of density functional theory calculation showed that •Cl addition reaction on C-Br sites of BDE-209 is the main reaction pathway of BDE-209 with chlorine radical, which leads to the generation of mixed Cl/Br substituted intermediates. The acute toxicity and estrogenic effects of BDE-209 solution were enhanced during simulated sunlight irradiation. These results indicate that the environmental factors in seawater play important roles in the photodegradation of BDE-209, and contribute to the potential ecological risks of PBDEs in the marine environment.

Dichlorine radicals (Cl2•-) promote the photodegradation of propranolol in estuarine and coastal waters

Propranolol (PRO) is frequently detected in estuarine and coastal waters, which has adverse effects on estuarine and coastal ecosystems. In this study, the effects of halide ions and DOM from estuarine and coastal waters on the photochemical transformation of PRO were investigated. The results demonstrated that the presence of Br^- alone exhibited slight effect on photochemical transformation of PRO, while photodegradation rates of PRO increased with the addition of 0.1-0.54 M Cl^-. The quenching experiments and the laser flash photolysis experiments together demonstrated the generation of Cl₂^•- in the photolytic systems. Cl₂^•- is possibly produced through the charge separation of exciplex of ³PRO* and Cl^- rather than via direct oxidation of Cl^-. Additional experiments indicated that addition of seawater DOM inhibited the halide ions-sensitized photodegradation rates of PRO, which may be due to the quenching of Cl₂^•- by phenolic substances in DOM molecules. Compared with pure water, three new photochemical intermediates were identified in the presence of DOM or Cl^-. The direct photolysis of PRO mainly reacted by hydroxyl additions, hydroxyl elimination and de-propylation, whereas electron transfer coupled with H-abstraction by Cl₂^•- and ³DOM* was proposed as the primary role for PRO degradation in the presence of Cl^- or DOM.

Mechanism of bicarbonate enhancing the photodegradation of β-blockers in natural waters

The impact of HCO₃^- on the photodegradation of β-blockers was investigated under simulated sunlight irradiation. The results show that in the presence of HCO₃^-, the photodegradation rates increase significantly for sotalol (SOT), whereas no effects on the degradation of carvedilol and arotinolol are observed. Using quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and degradation product determination, we demonstrate that carbonate radical (CO₃^•-) is formed by direct oxidation of HCO₃^- by triplet-excited SOT (³SOT*) and plays a significant role in SOT photodegradation. Competition kinetics experiments show that the three β-blockers all have high second-order rate constants (10⁷-10⁸ M^-1 s^-1) for the reaction with CO₃^•-. However, only ³SOT* has a higher reduction potential that can oxidize HCO₃^- to produce CO₃^•-. Thus, enhanced SOT removal rates in the presence of HCO₃^- were observed. In addition, the results show that seawater DOM could increase HCO₃^--induced photodegradation of SOT, whereas SRNOM mainly behaves as a CO₃^•- quencher and decreases the removal rate of SOT. The results underscore the role of HCO₃^- in limiting the persistence of organic pollutants like SOT in sunlit natural waters, and especially in marine and coastal waters.

Photolytic kinetics of pharmaceutically active compounds from upper to lower estuarine waters: Roles of triplet-excited dissolved organic matter and halogen radicals

Photodegradation is a major elimination route of many pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in natural surface waters, yet their photolytic behavior in estuarine waters with salinity gradient change is largely unknown. Herein, sulfamethazine and carbamazepine were taken as representative PhACs to explore the photolytic kinetic differences in Qinzhou Bay estuarine water samples collected from upper to lower reaches. Rapid photodegradation of sulfamethazine was found in lower estuarine water relative to upstream estuarine water; whereas for carbamazepine, photolytic rate was inversely proportional to the salinity of estuarine waters. Experiments with extracted estuarine dissolved organic matter (E-DOM) imply that the multivariate effects of triplet-excited E-DOM (³E-DOM∗) and halide ions are responsible for the enhancement photolysis of sulfamethazine. Radical scavenging experiments suggest that the photolysis enhancement can be ascribed to the contribution of reactive halogen species (RHS), while their contribution to carbamazepine is negligible and ³E-DOM∗ is the dominant reactive species for its photodegradation. This indicates that the reactivity differences with RHS and ³DOM∗ affect the photolytic kinetics of PhACs from upper estuarine waters to lower reaches, which is also supported by a good linear relationship between the ratios of photolytic rates for ten PhACs in E-DOM solution with/without halides and the ratios of the reactivity of these pollutants with RHS and ³DOM∗. These findings show that the different reactivity of PhACs with ³E-DOM∗ and RHS influences the photolytic kinetics in estuarine waters with different salinity, and highlights the photochemical behavior of organic micropollutants from upstream to downstream estuarine waters.

Enhanced and selective phototransformation of chlorophene on aluminum hydroxide-humic complexes

Mineral-humic complexes, known as mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM), are ubiquitous in natural waters. However, the interaction between organic pollutants and MAOM remains elusive, which may affect their degradation process. In this study, photochemical transformation of chlorophene (CP) in the presence of MAOM, prepared by coating aluminum hydroxide with humic acid (HA-HAO), was investigated. Our results showed that the degradation of CP was significantly enhanced in the presence of HA-HAO, and the degradation rate constant was ~5 times as that with HA only. It was because the adsorption of CP to HA-HAO particles was greatly enhanced, and concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was increased on HA-HAO surfaces, which further promoted the reactions between CP and ROS. The quenching experiments combined with EPR technology confirmed that superoxide anion (O₂^·-) was the primary reactive radical on CP photodegradation. More importantly, the degradation of CP with HA-HAO followed a hydroxylation process, rather than the oligomerization reaction with HA only. Spectroscopic analysis provided direct evidence for the formation of hydrogen bonding between CP phenolic hydroxyl group and surface oxygen of HAO, which would suppress the reactivity of phenolic hydroxyl group, consequently the ortho- and meta-positions of CP became more facile for the hydroxylation reaction. This study shows the importance of MAOM in altering the photochemical behavior and transformation pathway of organic contaminants.

Effect of UV/chlorine treatment on photophysical and photochemical properties of dissolved organic matter

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a ubiquitous component in effluents, DOM discharged with an effluent can affect the composition and properties of natural DOM in the receiving waters. As the photophysical and photochemical properties of effluent DOM can be changed by wastewater treatment processes, the effect of UV/chlorine treatment on the photophysical and photochemical properties of DOM was investigated using Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) as representatives. Results showed that the absorbance of the two DOM was significantly decreased. The evolution trends of three representative photophysical parameters upon increase of chlorine dosages were observed. Also, a decrease in DOM aromaticity, molecular weight and electron-donating capacity was observed upon increasing chlorine dosage. Quantum yields of excited triplet state of DOM (³DOM*), singlet oxygen (¹O₂) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) first decreases and then increased in the UV/chlorine systems upon increasing chlorine dosages due to the different reaction pathways of the two DOM. Moreover, ³DOM* can not only be regarded as a "controller" of other reactive intermediates, but also effectively promote the photodegradation of bezafibrate, which is classified as a persistent organic contaminant. This study gives deep insights into effects of UV/chlorine on the photophysical and photochemical properties of DOM, and is helpful for understanding the dynamic roles of DOM in the photodegradation of micropollutants.

Singlet Oxygen Quantum Yields in Environmental Waters

Singlet oxygen (¹O₂) is a reactive oxygen species produced in sunlit waters via energy transfer from the triplet states of natural sensitizers. There has been an increasing interest in measuring apparent ¹O₂ quantum yields (Φ_Δ) of aquatic and atmospheric organic matter samples, driven in part by the fact that this parameter can be used for environmental fate modeling of organic contaminants and to advance our understanding of dissolved organic matter photophysics. However, the lack of reproducibility across research groups and publications remains a challenge that significantly limits the usability of literature data. In the first part of this review, we critically evaluate the experimental techniques that have been used to determine Φ_Δ values of natural organic matter, we identify and quantify sources of errors that potentially explain the large variability in the literature, and we provide general experimental recommendations for future studies. In the second part, we provide a qualitative overview of known Φ_Δ trends as a function of organic matter type, isolation and extraction procedures, bulk water chemistry parameters, molecular and spectroscopic organic matter features, chemical treatments, wavelength, season, and location. This review is supplemented with a comprehensive database of Φ_Δ values of environmental samples.

Photooxidation mechanism of As(III) by straw-derived dissolved organic matter

Straw return-to-field is a common agronomic practice that would affect the physicochemical characteristics of the paddy soil and overlying water, but few studies have focused on the possible impacts of straw return on the conversion of pollutants. In this study, the photooxidation of As(III) in aqueous solution by straw-derived dissolved organic matter (S-DOM) was investigated. The results showed that dissolved organic matter derived from wheat straw (DOMws) and rape straw (DOMrs) exhibited good spectroscopic features and could efficiently oxidize As(III) under irradiation at pH 5.0, with the k_obs values of As(III) oxidation being 0.15 h^-1 and 0.17 h^-1 for DOMws and DOMrs, respectively. Quenching studies indicated that hydroxyl radical (OH) dominated the oxidation of As(III) for both types of dissolved organic matter (DOM), though singlet oxygen (¹O₂) also played a role in the DOMrs system. Since acidic conditions are favorable for the formation of OH, As(III) oxidation decreased with an increase of pH value. Additionally, the oxidation efficiency of As(III) was inhibited in the presence of NO₃^- (0.2-2 mM) while enhanced in the presence of Fe(III) (5-50 μM). This study is of great significance for understanding the removal/transformation behavior of pollutants in paddy fields that receive straw return.

Sunlight-induced changes in naturally stored reclaimed water: Dissolved organic matter, micropollutant, and ecotoxicity

Natural sunlight is a vital environmental element and plays a significant role in the ecological storage of reclaimed water (RW), but its impacts on RW quality are poorly understood. In this study, sunlight-induced changes in RW with a focus on dissolved organic matter (rDOM) and 52 residual micropollutants were investigated in the field during the summer and winter seasons. The results indicated that sunlight exposure led to the dissipation of chromophoric DOM (CDOM) in the summer (55% loss) and winter (19% loss) after 14 consecutive sunny days. During open storage of RW, CDOM absorption in UVC regions was preferentially removed in the summer, while during the winter there was preferential removal of CDOM in UVA regions. The results also showed higher fluorescent DOM (FDOM) removal in summer than in winter (49% and 28%, respectively). Results in both seasons indicated that humic acid-like compounds were the most photolabile fractions and were preferentially removed under sunlight exposure. Sunlight also induced attenuation of micropollutants in the summer and winter at reductions of 66% and 24% from the initial values, respectively. Significant attenuation (>75%) was only observed for endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and sunscreens in the summer, but they accounted for 76% of the total concentrations. Vibrio fischeri toxicity tests demonstrated that sunlight constantly decreased the luminescent bacteria acute toxicity of RW, which was estimated to be caused mainly by the sunlight-induced changes of FDOM and CDOM, while the detected micropollutants could only explain 0.02%-2% of acute toxicity. These findings have important implications regarding our understanding of the ecological storage of reclaimed water and the contribution of management strategies.

Photochemistry of dissolved organic matter extracted from coastal seawater: Excited triplet-states and contents of phenolic moieties

Coastal seawater constitutes an important ecosystem receiving inputs of organic micropollutants (OMPs) such as sulfa antibiotics from land-based sources or mariculture activities. It is necessary to investigate photodegradation of OMPs in coastal seawaters for assessing their environmental fate and risks. However, effects of coastal seawater dissolved organic matter (S-DOM) on OMPs photodegradation are largely unknown, given that chemical compositions of S-DOM are different from those of freshwater DOM. Herein, photochemical characteristics of S-DOM extracted from Dalian coastal seawaters were investigated by simulating photochemical experiment adopting sulfachloropyridazine as a case. Results show that S-DOM accelerates the photodegradation mainly through excited triplet-state DOM (³DOM*) with an apparent rate constant (4.43 × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1) ten folds of that of freshwater DOM, which is mainly due to much lower phenol contents detected in the S-DOM (0.022 mg-Gallic acid mg-C^-1). The S-DOM impacted by mariculture can photogenerate more high-energy ³DOM* than those less impacted by mariculture, further contributing to the high ³DOM* reactivity. The study shows that to accurately predict photolytic persistence of OMPs in field water bodies, it is of significance to determine the second-order reaction rate constants between ³DOM* and target OMPs using DOM extracted from relevant water bodies.

Indirect photodegradation of sulfadiazine in the presence of DOM: Effects of DOM components and main seawater constituents

The presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in coastal waters has caused concern over the past decade. Sulfadiazine (SD) is a very common antibiotic widely used as human and fishery medicine, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a significant role in the indirect photodegradation of SD; however, the influence of DOM compositions on SD indirect photodegradation is poorly understood. The roles of reactive intermediates (RIs) in the indirect photolysis of SD were assessed in this study. The reactive triplet states of DOM (³DOM∗) played a major role, whereas HO· and ¹O₂ played insignificant roles. DOM was divided into four components using excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis. The components included three allochthonous humic-like components and one autochthonous humic-like component. The allochthonous humic-like components contributed more to RIs generation and SD indirect photolysis than the autochthonous humic-like component. A significant relationship between the indirect photodegradation of SD and the decay of DOM fluorescent components was found (correlation coefficient, 0.99), and the different indirect photodegradation of SD in various DOM solutions might be ascribed to the different components of DOM. The indirect photolysis rate of SD first increased and then decreased with increasing pH. SD photolysis was enhanced by low salinity but remained stable at high salinity. The increased carbonate concentration inhibited SD photolysis, whereas nitrate showed almost no effect in this study.

Effect of straw-derived dissolved organic matter on the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole to purple paddy soils

The presence of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in croplands has become an international concern. The environmental behavior and fate of SMX in agricultural soils are not well understood, especially when the adsorption behavior is disturbed by the dissolved organic matter (DOM) released by crop straw. As canola straw is one of the biomasses widely returned to farmlands, we characterized DOM derived from pristine and decomposed canola straw, and explored the effects and mechanisms of the DOMs on regulating SMX adsorption to purple paddy soils. The spectral analysis showed that the molecular weight, aromaticity, and hydrophobicity of canola straw-derived DOM increased as decomposition proceeded. These physicochemical properties collectively determined the effects of the DOM on SMX adsorption. The DOM derived from pristine canola straw increased SMX maximum adsorption capacity of the soils by approximately 2.6 times, but this positive effect gradually decreased to a steady state by day 90 in the straw decomposition period. Nevertheless, the SMX adsorption behavior in the soils was invariably determined by the DOM extracts. These adsorption processes of SMX were well fitted by the double-chamber kinetics model and the Langmuir and Freundlich thermodynamic models. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that SMX adsorption onto the soils was spontaneous and endothermic, and this adsorption characteristics was not significantly (p > 0.05) changed by the DOM extracts. However, the adsorption kinetics were altered by those DOMs, i.e., the fast and slow adsorption processes were both diminished. Correspondingly, co-adsorption and cumulative adsorption were identified as the main mechanisms determining SMX adsorption to the purple paddy soils in the presence of the straw-derived DOMs. These results collectively indicated that the DOMs released by straw in croplands may decrease the ecological risks of organic pollutants by inhibiting their migration processes.

Photochemical degradation of nebivolol in different natural organic matter solutions under simulated sunlight irradiation: Kinetics, mechanism and degradation pathway

Nebivolol (NEB) is widely used for the treatment of hypertension and chronic heart failure and has become an ubiquitous emerging organic pollutant. It has been shown to undergo direct photolysis, but the role of DOM in its degradation kinetics and mechanism is not well understood. In this study, we studied the photochemical behavior of NEB in the presence of seawater DOM (SW-DOM) and freshwater DOM (SRNOM) under simulated sunlight irradiation. SW-DOM had a promotion effect on NEB photodegradation, whereas SRNOM retarded its photolytic transformation. After eliminating the influence of light screening, we found that the indirect photodegradation rate of NEB in the presence of SRNOM was lower than that in the presence of SW-DOM. Results show that the indirect photodegradation pathway occurred by reaction with triplet-excited DOM (³DOM*). The second-order rate constants for ³SW-DOM* and ³SRNOM* reaction with NEB are 3.7 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1 and 3.7 × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1, respectively. The electron donating capacity of SRNOM is higher than that of SW-DOM, indicating that SRNOM may contain more activated phenolic moieties. SRNOM may thus have higher antioxidant activity, leading a higher inhibitory effect on NEB photodegradation. A total of six degradation products were identified in the absence and presence of DOM by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. The substitution of F by OH-groups and further oxidation a OH-group in the lateral chain to a ketone, and cleavage of N-C bond by the attack of ³DOM* are here proposed as the main degradation pathways.

Development of a quantitative structure-activity relationship model for mechanistic interpretation and quantum yield prediction of singlet oxygen generation from dissolved organic matter

Singlet oxygen (¹O₂) is capable of degrading organic contaminants and inducing cell damage and inactivation of viruses. It is mainly generated through the interaction of dissolved oxygen with excited triplet states of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural waters. The present study aims at revealing the underlying mechanism of ¹O₂ generation and providing a potential tool for predicting the quantum yield of ¹O₂ (Φ_1O2) generation from DOM by constructing a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model. The determined Φ_1O2 values for the selected DOM-analogs range from (0.54 ± 0.23) × 10^-2 to (62.03 ± 2.97) × 10^-2. A QSAR model was constructed and was proved to have satisfactory goodness-of-fit and robustness. The QSAR model was successfully used to predict the Φ_1O2 of Suwannee River fulvic acid. Mechanistic interpretation of the descriptors in the model showed that hydrophobicity, molecular complexity and the presence of carbonyl groups in DOM play crucial roles in the generation of ¹O₂ from DOM. The presence of other heteroatoms besides O, such as N and S, also affects the generation of ¹O₂. The results of this study provide valuable insights into the generation of ¹O₂ from DOM in sunlit natural waters.

Effects of dissolved organic matter derived from freshwater and seawater on photodegradation of three antiviral drugs

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the most important light absorber that may induce indirect photolytic transformation of organic pollutants in natural waters. In this study, effects of DOM derived from freshwater and seawater on the photodegradation of three antiviral drugs acyclovir, lamivudine and zidovudine were investigated. Results show that the photodegradation of acyclovir is promoted mainly by excited triplet states DOM (³DOM*), and the photodegradation of lamivudine is accelerated by ³DOM*, •OH and ¹O₂ together; however, the photodegradation of zidovudine is inhibited by DOM mainly via light screening. Compared with DOM from freshwater, promotion effect of DOM extracted from seawater (SDOM) on the photodegradation of acyclovir and lamivudine is weaker, which is attributed to lower productivity of reactive intermediates. On the other hand, inhibitory effect of SDOM on the photodegradation of zidovudine is also weaker, which is due to weaker light screening caused by lower light absorption. Photodegradation half-lives of the three antiviral drugs are predicted to be all more than 20 days in freshwater and seawater bodies of the Yellow River estuarine region. These findings are significant for understanding the phototransformation processes of antiviral drugs and other organic pollutants in estuarine and coastal regions.

Photo-induced phosphate release during sediment resuspension in shallow lakes: A potential positive feedback mechanism of eutrophication

Dissolved phosphate (P_i) can be released during resuspended sediments exposed to sunlight. However, the significance of this phenomenon in the process of eutrophication is not clear. In this study, the behavior of photo-induced P_i release during sediment resuspension in shallow lakes with the different trophic states was investigated. The amount of photo-induced P_i release in the sediment resuspension from Lake Liangzi, Lake Dong, Lake Tangxun and Lake Longyang in China was 0.013, 0.019, 0.032, and 0.048 mg/L, respectively, and increased as the trophic states of the lakes increased. The results of phosphorus speciation analysis showed that the phosphate monoester in the particulate phosphorus is the organic phosphorus species participated in the photochemical reaction. The steady-state concentration of hydroxyl radical (OH) in the sediment resuspension also increased along with the trophic states of lakes increased and dissolved organic matter (DOM), nitrate, and Fe³⁺ presented in sediment resuspension were the main photosensitizers for OH production. All these results indicate that the increase of trophic states of lakes leads to the accumulation of organic phosphorus and OH, resulting in more dissolved phosphate photo-released, which accelerate the eutrophication process in a form of positive feedback.

Concerted Efforts Are Needed to Control and Mitigate Antibiotic Pollution in Coastal Waters of China

Antibiotics have been applied for decades and antibiotic pollution is of great concern due to the risk for promoting resistant genes. Human activities such as mariculture and land-based discharge can lead to the antibiotic pollution in coastal area and it is of importance to assess the pollution and risks of antibiotics in this area. In this mini-review, the pollution status of antibiotics in Chinese coastal waters is summarized and some perspectives are put forward for future efforts to mitigate the pollution.
