Persulfate photolysis and limited irrigation of recycled wastewater for turfgrass growth: Accumulation of pharmaceutical and personal care products and physiological responses

Recycled wastewater effluent irrigation and implementing limited irrigation rates are two promising strategies for water conservation in agriculture. However, one major challenge is the accumulation and translocation of Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) from recycled water to crops. This study investigated the effects of UV persulfate (UV/PS) treatment of recycled water and limited irrigation rate on PPCPs accumulation and physiological responses of St. Augustine turfgrass via a 14-week field trial. Carbamazepine (CBZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), triclosan (TCS), fluoxetine (FLX) and diclofenac (DCF) were spiked at 0.1-1.5 µg/L into recycled water and two limited irrigation rates corresponding to 60 % and 80 % of reference Evapotranspiration (ETo) were applied. Results showed that UV/PS removed 60 % of CBZ and > 99 % of other PPCPs from recycled water. Irrigation with UV/PS treated recycled water resulted in approximately a 60 % reduction in CBZ accumulation and complete removal of SMX, DCF, FLX and TCS in both turfgrass leaves and roots. A more limited irrigation rate at 60 % ETo resulted in a higher accumulation of CBZ accumulation compared to 80 % ETo. Similarly, the canopy temperature increased under 60 % ETo irrigation rate compared to 80 % ETo, suggesting that turfgrass under 60 % ETo was more prone to water stress. Applying a 60 % ETo irrigation rate was not sufficient to maintain the turfgrass quality in the acceptable range. A negative correlation between the visual quality and cumulative mass of PPCPs in turfgrass leaves at different irrigation rates was observed, yet irrigation rate was the major driver of turfgrass overall quality and health. Insights from this study will help to integrate recycled water with treatment and limited irrigation, thereby enhancing agricultural water reuse practices.

Research progress on the generation of NDMA by typical PPCPs in disinfection treatment of water environment in China: A review

The drugs and personal care products in water sources are potential threats to the ecological environment and drinking water quality. In recent years, the presence of PPCPs has been detected in multiple drinking water sources in China. PPCPs are usually stable and resistant to degradation in aquatic environments. During chlorination, chloramination, and ozonation disinfection processes, PPCPs can act as precursor substances to generate N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) which is the most widely detected nitrosamine byproduct in drinking water. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of PPCPs in China's water environment on the generation of NDMA during disinfection processes to better understand the correlation between PPCPs and NDMA generation. Chloramine is the most likely to form NDMA with different disinfection methods, so chloramine disinfection may be the main pathway for NDMA generation. Activated carbon adsorption and UV photolysis are widely used in the removal of NDMA and its precursor PPCPs, and biological treatment is found to be a low-cost and high removal rate method for controlling the generation of NDMA. However, there are still certain regional limitations in the investigation and research on PPCPs, and other nitrosamine by-products such as NMEA, NDEA and NDBA should also be studied to investigate the formation mechanism and removal methods.

Synthesis and characterization of new composite from modified silica-coated MnFe2O4 nanoparticles for removal of tetracycline from aqueous solution

In this study, a new composite from silica coated MnFe2O4 nanoparticles, diethylenetriamine, 3-chloropropyl trimethoxysilane and Mg-Al Layered Double Hydroxide (Mg-Al LDH/DETA/CPTMS/SCNPs) composite was synthesized. The Mg-Al LDH/DETA/CPTMS/SCNPs composite was examined by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM). The synthesized composite exhibited magnetic property with a saturation magnetization of 0.40 emu g-1. The Mg-Al LDH/DETA/CPTMS/SCNPs composite was utilized as a successful adsorbent for removal of tetracycline from aqueous solutions. The effect of various operation factors such as initial drug concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH and contact time were investigated. The optimized variable conditions such as adsorbent dose of 60 mg L-1, drug concentration of 100 mg L-1, pH = 7 and contact time 30 min were obtained. For describing the adsorption isotherms, the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption models were utilized. The results indicated that the adsorption isotherm is in good agreement with Langmuir model. According to the Langmuir analysis, the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of the Mg-Al LDH/DETA/CPTMS/SCNPs composite for tetracycline was obtained to be 40.16 mg g-1. The kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption in all cases to be a pseudo second-order process. The negative value of ΔG° and the positive value of ΔH° showed the adsorption process to be spontaneous and endothermic.

Developmental defects in cognition, metabolic and cardiac function following maternal exposures to low environmental levels of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors and tributyltin in Daphnia magna

Aquatic organisms are exposed to low concentrations of neuro-active chemicals, many of them acting also as neuroendocrine disruptors that can be hazardous during earlier embryonic stages. The present study aims to assess how exposure early in live to environmental low concentrations of two selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), fluoxetine and sertraline, and tributyltin (TBT) affected cognitive, metabolic and cardiac responses in the model aquatic crustacean Daphnia magna. To that end, newly brooded females were exposed for an entire reproductive cycle (3-4 days) and the response of collected juveniles in the first, second and third consecutive broods, which were exposed, respectively, as embryos, provisioned and un-provisioned egg stages, was monitored. Pre-exposure to the selected SSRIs during embryonic and egg developmental stages altered the swimming behaviour of D. magna juveniles to light in a similar way reported elsewhere by serotonergic compounds while TBT altered cognition disrupting multiple neurological signalling routes. The studied compounds also altered body size, the amount of storage lipids in lipid droplets, heart rate, oxygen consumption rates and the transcription of related serotonergic, dopaminergic and lipid metabolic genes in new-born individuals, mostly pre-exposed during their embryonic and provisioning egg stages. The obtained cognitive, cardiac and metabolic defects in juveniles developed from exposed sensitive pre-natal stages align with the "Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DoHAD)" paradigm.

Toxicity of commercial and pure forms of three nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in Xenopus laevis embryos before and after ozonation

In this study, the toxic and teratogenic effects of three commercial drugs and their active ingredients on Xenopus laevis embryos before and after ozonation were evaluated using the Frog Embryos Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus (FETAX). First, the median lethal concentration (LC50) and, if data were available, the median effective concentration, teratogenic index and minimum growth inhibitory concentration were determined for each drug substance without ozonation. Then, the active substance amounts of three selected nominal concentrations (LC50/2, LC50, and LC50×2) of each test substance before ozonation were measured by HPLC analysis and the toxicity of these substances was evaluated after 2, 3, 4, and 5 h of ozonation. In addition, degradation products that may occur during ozonation were evaluated by LC-MS analysis. The 96-h LC50s of Dolphin-diflunisal, Dichloron-diclofenac sodium, and Apranax-naproxen drug-active substance pairs were determined to be 22.3 and 11.1, 25.7 and 18.7, and 47.8 mg active substance/L and 45.3 mg/L, respectively. According to the FETAX test results, the Dolphin-diflunisal drug-active ingredient pair did not cause growth retardation in exposed embryos. Dichloron-diclofenac sodium and Apranax-naproxen drug-active ingredient pairs were both teratogenic and growth inhibitory. In the second stage of the study, in which the effectiveness of ozonation in eliminating the toxic effects of drugs is evaluated, it is seen that ozonation is partially successful in eliminating the toxic effects of Dolphin-diflunisal and Dichloron-diclofenac sodium pairs, but insufficient for eliminating the effects of the Apranax-naproxen pair.

Exploring the promising application of Be12O12 nanocage for the abatement of paracetamol using DFT simulations

The removal of paracetamol from water is of prime concern because of its toxic nature in aquatic environment. In the present research, a detailed DFT study is carried out to remove paracetamol drug from water with the help of Be12O12 to eliminate the related issues. Three different geometries (CMP-1, CMP-2, CMP-3,) are obtained with the highest adsorption energies value (Eads) of - 31.2316 kcal/mol for CMP-3 without any prominent structural change. It is observed from the study that O atom from the carbonyl group (C=O) and H atom from O-H group successfully interact with O and Be atoms of the nanocage respectively. Natural bonding orbitals analysis reveals charge transfer to paracetamol drug from Be12O12 nanocage with maximum charge transfer of - 0.159 e for CMP-3 with bond angle of 1.65 Å confirming the stability of the CMP-3 among the optimized complexes. The quantum theory of atoms in molecule concludes that the interaction between paracetamol drug molecule and Be12O12 is purely closed-shell weak electrostatic in nature in CMP-1 and CMP-3 and shared interaction in CMP-2. The thermodynamics analysis witnesses that the process is exothermic and spontaneous. The regeneration study reveals the reversible nature of the adsorbent. The overall study presents Be12O12 nanocage as a potential adsorbent and may be used in future for the purification of water from a number of emerging pollutants.

Emerging environmental health risks associated with the land application of biosolids: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

Over 40% of the six million dry metric tons of sewage sludge, often referred to as biosolids, produced annually in the United States is land applied. Biosolids serve as a sink for emerging pollutants which can be toxic and persist in the environment, yet their fate after land application and their impacts on human health have not been well studied. These gaps in our understanding are exacerbated by the absence of systematic monitoring programs and defined standards for human health protection.

METHODS

The purpose of this paper is to call critical attention to the knowledge gaps that currently exist regarding emerging pollutants in biosolids and to underscore the need for evidence-based testing standards and regulatory frameworks for human health protection when biosolids are land applied. A scoping review methodology was used to identify research conducted within the last decade, current regulatory standards, and government publications regarding emerging pollutants in land applied biosolids.

RESULTS

Current research indicates that persistent organic compounds, or emerging pollutants, found in pharmaceuticals and personal care products, microplastics, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have the potential to contaminate ground and surface water, and the uptake of these substances from soil amended by the land application of biosolids can result in contamination of food sources. Advanced technologies to remove these contaminants from wastewater treatment plant influent, effluent, and biosolids destined for land application along with tools to detect and quantify emerging pollutants are critical for human health protection.

CONCLUSIONS

To address these current risks, there needs to be a significant investment in ongoing research and infrastructure support for advancements in wastewater treatment; expanded manufacture and use of sustainable products; increased public communication of the risks associated with overuse of pharmaceuticals and plastics; and development and implementation of regulations that are protective of health and the environment.

Hybrid approaches based on hydrodynamic cavitation, peroxymonosulfate and UVC irradiation for treatment of organic pollutants: fractal like kinetics, modeling and process optimization

Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) was emerged as one of the most potential technologies for industrial-scale wastewater or water treatment. In this work, a combined system of HC, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and UVC irradiation (HC - PMS - UVC) was constructed for effective degradation of carbamazepine. The effect of several experimental parameters and conditions on the carbamazepine degradation was considered. The results show that the degradation and mineralization rates increases with an increase in the inlet pressure from 1.3 to 4.3 bars. The rates of carbamazepine degradation with the combined processes of HC - PMS - UVC, HC - PMS, HC - UVC, and UVC - PMS were 73%, 67%, 40% and 31%, respectively. Under the optimal conditions of reactor, the carbamazepine degradation and mineralization rates were 73% with 59%, respectively. The kinetics of carbamazepine degradation was studied applying a fractal-like approach. So, a new model was proposed by combining first order kinetics model and fractal-like concept. The obtained results show that the proposed fractal-like model gives a better performance compared with traditional first order kinetics model. It has been demonstrated that the HC - PMS - UVC process is a potential treatment method to destroy pharmaceutical pollutants from water and wastewater sources.

Phytoremediation of diclofenac using the Green Liver System: Macrophyte screening to system optimization

Green Liver Systems employ the ability of macrophytes to take up, detoxify (biotransform), and bioaccumulate pollutants; however, these systems require optimization to target specific pollutants. In the present study, the aim was to test the applicability of the Green Liver System for diclofenac remediation considering the effects of selected variables. As a starting point, 42 macrophyte life forms were evaluated for diclofenac uptake. With the three best performing macrophytes, the system efficiency was evaluated at two diclofenac concentrations, one environmentally relevant and that other significantly higher (10µg/L and 150µg/L) and in two system sizes (60L and 1000L) as well as at three flow rates (3, 7, and 15L/min). The effect of single species and combinations on removal efficiency was also considered. The highest internalization percentage was recorded in Ceratophyllum spp., Myriophyllum spp., and Egeria densa. Phytoremediation efficiency with species combinations was far superior to utilizing only a single macrophyte type. Furthermore, the results indicate that the flow rate significantly affected the removal efficiency of the pharmaceutical tested, with the highest remediation efficiency obtained with the highest flow rate. System size did not significantly affect phytoremediation; however, increase diclofenac concentration reduced the systems performance significantly. When planning the setup of a Green Liver System for wastewater remediation, basic knowledge about the water, i.e., pollutant types and flow, must be utilized during planning to optimize remediation. Various macrophytes show diverse uptake efficiencies for different contaminants and should be selected based on the pollutant composition of the wastewater.

Development of an embedded molecular structure-based model for prediction of micropollutant treatability in a drinking water treatment plant by machine learning from three years monitoring data

In this study, an autoencoder-based molecular structure embedding model was developed to predict treatability of micropollutant in a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) by machine learning using 69 micropollutants monitoring data at 18 DWTPs for three years. The molecular structure, which contains physicochemical characteristics, was embedded as a fixed-length vector that is advantageous for data-driven analysis and machine learning. First, the molecular structure of the micropollutants was converted to a sequence of tokens using the simplified molecular-input line-entry system (SMILES) pair encoding tokenizer, a frequency-based tokenization method. It was then compressed into fixed-length vectors using an autoencoder trained on various molecular structures within the Chemical Entities of Biological Interest. To validate the proposed models, a binary classification of micropollutant treatability was performed using the embedded molecular structure of micropollutants with various external features, such as concentration, season, and the presence of specific drinking water treatment processes by machine learning. The accuracy of the developed model for the 69 micropollutants in this study was 0.86, and the molecular structure was determined to be the most important feature. Furthermore, an accuracy of 0.71 was obtained in external validation for pharmaceuticals and personal care products that were not used for training. This shows that the proposed embedding vector can be generalized to unseen molecules during the training process, which means that it reflects the characteristics of the molecular structures.

Chemical and biological tracers to identify source and transport pathways of septic system contamination to streams in areas with low permeability soils

Septic systems are widely used in rural areas that lack centralized sewage treatment systems. Incomplete removal of domestic wastewater contaminants in septic systems can lead to leaching of nutrients (P and N), bacteria/viruses, and trace contaminants to surrounding groundwater and surface water. This study focuses on delineating the fate of wastewater contaminants in localities where septic systems are installed in moderate to fine-grained overburden materials to assess potential impacts on groundwater and surface water quality in these settings. Nutrients and a suite of anthropogenic tracers, including host-specific fecal indicator bacteria (bovine- and human-specific Bacteroides), pharmaceutical compounds (caffeine, carbamazepine, gemfibrozil, ibuprofen, naproxen, and sulfamethoxazole), and an artificial sweetener (acesulfame-K), were selected to evaluate differences in transport properties. Surface water samples (n = 103) were collected from streams upstream (US) and downstream (DS) of three rural hamlets up to two times monthly over one year. Results indicate the presence of wastewater indicators in the streams, with DS locations showing significantly elevated concentrations of both chemical and biological anthropogenic tracers. Human-specific Bacteroides, caffeine, and acesulfame-K were consistently observed at elevated concentrations at all DS sites. Nutrients exhibited varied concentrations between US and DS locations at three study sites. The occurrence of human-specific Bacteroides in the surface water samples suggests the presence of preferential flow pathways within the silt/clay overburden. These results demonstrate the advantages of using a combined tracer approach, involving a conservative tracer such as acesulfame-K coupled with the human-specific biological indicator Bacteroides (BacHum), to understand not only impacting sources but also potential transport pathways of septic system contamination to nearby streams. Septic systems may be an underappreciated contaminant source in rural hamlets located in fine-grained overburden materials; although, a distinction of specific nutrient sources (septic systems vs. agriculture) remains challenging.

Dispersed cobalt embedded nitrogen-rich carbon framework activates peroxymonosulfate for carbamazepine degradation: cobalt leaching restriction and mechanism investigation

Metal leaching is a key issue in cobalt-based catalysts/PMS systems, which results in the decline of catalytic ability and serious secondary pollution. Hence, a nitrogen-rich carbon framework with cobalt node (Co-NC-920) with low cobalt leaching was synthesized based on zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF) and g-C₃N₄ to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ). With the restriction of nitrogen-rich carbon framework, cobalt can disperse better and form stable cobalt-nitrogen bonds, thus only 0.09 mg/L cobalt ions were leached in the solution. More than 99.9% of CBZ can be removed within 30 min of PMS addition. Further investigation revealed that ¹O₂, SO₄^•- and high-valent cobalt species were primarily responsible for CBZ degradation in the Co-NC-920/PMS system and different reactive oxygen species (ROS) were distinguished and quantified, finding ¹O₂ was predominant. The degradation process was realized by the coexistence of free radicals and non-free radicals. Moreover, CBZ degradation capacity of the catalyst was evaluated under the influence of common anions and in actual waterbody. Finally, the possible degradation pathways of CBZ were proposed and the toxicity of the intermediates was analyzed. This work provides a new approach for the synthesis of cobalt-based nitrogen-rich carbon catalysts with low leaching and high efficient.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Paracetamol under Simulated Sunlight by Four TiO2 Commercial Powders: An Insight into the Performance of Two Sub-Micrometric Anatase and Rutile Powders and a Nanometric Brookite Powder

The photocatalytic degradation of the emerging contaminant paracetamol in aqueous solution has been studied under 1 SUN (~1000 W m−2) in the presence of four commercial TiO2 powders, namely sub-micrometric anatase and rutile, and nanometric brookite and P25 (the popular anatase/rutile mixture used as a benchmark in most papers). The rutile powder showed low activity, whereas, interestingly, the anatase and the brookite powders outperformed P25 in terms of total paracetamol conversion to carboxylic acids, which, according to the literature, are the final products of its degradation. To explain such results, the physicochemical properties of the powders were studied by applying a multi-technique approach. Among the physicochemical properties usually affecting the photocatalytic performance of TiO2, the presence of some surface impurities likely deriving from K3PO4 (used as crystallization agent) was found to significantly affect the percentage of paracetamol degradation obtained with the sub-micrometric anatase powder. To confirm the role of phosphate, a sample of anatase, obtained by a lab synthesis procedure and having a “clean” surface, was used as a control, though characterized by nanometric particles and higher surface area. The sample was less active than the commercial anatase, but it was more active after impregnation with K3PO4. Conversely, the presence of Cl at the surface of the rutile did not sizably affect the (overall poor) photocatalytic activity of the powder. The remarkable photocatalytic activity of the brookite nanometric powder was ascribed to a combination of several physicochemical properties, including its band structure and nanoparticles size.

Suspect Screening of Chemicals in Hospital Wastewaters Using Effect-Directed Analysis Approach as Prioritization Strategy

The increasing number of contaminants in the environment has pushed water monitoring programs to find out the most hazardous known and unknown chemicals in the environment. Sample treatment-simplification methods and non-target screening approaches can help researchers to not overlook potential chemicals present in complex aqueous samples. In this work, an effect-directed analysis (EDA) protocol using the sea urchin embryo test (SET) as a toxicological in vivo bioassay was used as simplified strategy to identify potential unknown chemicals present in a very complex aqueous matrix such as hospital effluent. The SET bioassay was used for the first time here to evaluate potential toxic fractions in hospital effluent, which were obtained after a two-step fractionation using C₁₈ and aminopropyl chromatographic semi-preparative columns. The unknown compounds present in the toxic fractions were identified by means of liquid chromatography coupled to a Q Exactive Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometer (LC-HRMS) and using a suspect analysis approach. The results were complemented by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis (GC-MS) in order to identify the widest range of chemical compounds present in the sample and the toxic fractions. Using EDA as sample treatment simplification method, the number of unknown chemicals (>446 features) detected in the raw sample was narrowed down to 94 potential toxic candidates identified in the significantly toxic fractions. Among them, the presence of 25 compounds was confirmed with available chemical standards including 14 pharmaceuticals, a personal care product, six pesticides and four industrial products. The observations found in this work emphasize the difficulties in identifying potential toxicity drivers in complex water samples, as in the case of hospital wastewater.

Degradation of antibiotics by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs): Performance, mechanisms, and perspectives

Global consumption and discharge of antibiotics have led to the rapid development and spread of bacterial antibiotic resistance. Among treatment strategies, electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) are gaining popularity for treating water/wastewater containing antibiotics due to their high efficiency and easiness of operation. In this review, we summarize various forms of EAOPs that contribute to antibiotic degradation, including common electrochemical oxidation (EO), electrolyte enhanced EO, electro-Fenton (EF) processes, EF-like process, and EAOPs coupling with other processes. Then we assess the performance of various EAOPs in antibiotic degradation and discuss the influence of key factors, including electrode, initial concentration and type of antibiotic, operation conditions, electrolyte, and water quality. We also review mechanisms and degradation pathways of various antibiotics degradation by EAOPs, and address the species and toxicity of intermediates produced during antibiotics treatment. Finally, we highlight challenges and critical research needs to facilitate the application of EAOPs in antibiotic treatment.

Emerging Contaminants and New POPs (PFAS and HBCDD) in Endangered Southern Resident and Bigg's (Transient) Killer Whales (Orcinus orca): In Utero Maternal Transfer and Pollution Management Implications

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) have been deemed one of the most contaminated cetacean species in the world. However, concentrations and potential health implications of selected 'contaminants of emerging concern' (CECs) and new persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in endangered Southern Resident and threatened Bigg's (Transient) killer whales in the Northeastern Pacific (NEP) have not yet been documented. Here, we quantify CECs [alkylphenols (APs), triclosan, methyl triclosan, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)] and new POPs [hexabromocyclododecane (HBCCD), PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS] in skeletal muscle and liver samples of these sentinel species and investigate in utero transfer of these contaminants. Samples were collected from necropsied individuals from 2006 to 2018 and analyzed by LC-MS/MS or HRBC/HRMS. AP and PFAS contaminants were the most prevalent compounds; 4-nonylphenol (4NP) was the predominant AP (median 40.84 ng/g ww), and interestingly, 7:3-fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (7:3 FTCA) was the primary PFAS (median 66.35 ng/g ww). Maternal transfer ratios indicated 4NP as the most transferred contaminant from the dam to the fetus, with maternal transfer rates as high as 95.1%. Although too few killer whales have been screened for CECs and new POPs to infer the magnitude of contamination impact, these results raise concerns regarding pathological implications and potential impacts on fetal development and production of a viable neonate. This study outlines CEC and new POP concentrations in killer whales of the NEP and provides scientifically derived evidence to support and inform regulation to mitigate pollutant sources and contamination of Southern Resident killer whale critical habitat and other marine ecosystems.

Analysis of the contribution of locally derived wastewater to the occurrence of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in Antarctic coastal waters

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) are emerging pollutants detected in many locations of the world including Antarctica. The main objective of this review is to discuss the influence of the human population on the concentration, distribution and biological effects of PPCPs across the Antarctic coastal marine ecosystem. We carried out a review of the scientific articles published for PPCPs in Antarctic, supported by the information of the Antarctic stations reported by Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (CONMAP), Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty (ATS). In addition, spatial data regarding the Antarctic continent was obtained from Quantarctica. Antarctic concentrations of PPCPs were more reflective of the treatment system used by research stations as opposed to the infrastructure built or the annual occupancy by station. The main problem is that most of the research stations lack tertiary treatment, resulting in elevated concentrations of PPCPs in effluents. Furthermore, the geographic distribution of Antarctic field stations in coastal areas allows for the release of PPCPs, directly into the sea, a practice that remains in compliance with the current Protocol. After their release, PPCPs can become incorporated into sea ice, which can then act as a chemical reservoir. In addition, there is no clarity on the effects on the local biota. Finally, we recommend regulating the entry and use of PPCPs in Antarctica given the difficulties of operating, and in some cases the complete absence of appropriate treatment systems. Further studies are needed on the fate, transport and biological effects of PPCPs on the Antarctic biota. It is recommended that research efforts be carried out in areas inhabited by humans to generate mitigation measures relative to potential adverse impacts. Tourism should be also considered in further studies due the temporal release of PPCPs.

Occurrence and Fate of Triclosan and Triclocarban in Selected Wastewater Systems across Durban Metropolis, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) are antimicrobial agents that have been used in personal care and consumer products in the past decades. In this study, influent, effluent, and sludge samples collected in selected wastewater treatment plants across the Durban metropolis were qualitatively and quantitatively investigated. It was revealed that the concentration of TCS ranged from 1.906 to 73.462 µg/L, from 1.732 to 6.980 µg/L, and from 0.138 to 2.455 µg/kg in influent, effluent, and sludge samples, respectively. The concentrations of TCC were found to be between 0.320 and 45.261 µg/L, <LOQ−1.103 µg/L, and from 0.107 to 8.827 µg/kg in the influent, effluent, and sludge samples, respectively. Higher concentrations of TCS as compared with TCC were observed in the aqueous samples. However, the concentrations of TCC in the sludge samples were significantly higher than the level of TCS. More water solubility of TCS could be responsible for the observed trend in the influent and effluent samples, while the trend observed in the sludge could be due to the more hydrophobicity character of TCC. The results of this study indicated that substantial amounts of TCS and TCC are been removed during the treatment process which could be a major reason for the decline in the levels recorded in the effluent samples, therefore, reducing the amount of the TCS and TCC that would eventually end up in the surface rivers. Qualitative analyses of the samples indicated the presence of caffeine, tert-butylhydroquinone, chloroxylenol, phenol, 4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyl butyl), and dimethyl-bisphenol A. Further investigative ecological risk assessment studies are crucial due to the potential threat the contaminants may pose to aquatic lives and humans.

Potential Role of Agrimonia eupatoria L. Extract in Cell Protection Against Toxicity Induced by Bisphenol A

The aim of this study is to reveal the potentially protective role of ethanolic extract of agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria L.) against the cytotoxic effect of bisphenol A (BPA) in vitro, using an intestinal porcine epithelial cell line (IPEC-1). The cells were exposed to different concentrations of BPA: 12.5, 25, 50, 100, and 200 µg.ml–1 alone and in combination with agrimony extract (250 µg.ml–1). The proliferative cell response was monitored for 72 h by a xCELLigence system or real-time cell analyser (RTCA), recorded as the cell index (CI) and expressed as a proliferative activity (% PA) compared to the control cells without treatment. The metabolic activity was measured by a MTS colorimetric test, performed after 48 h of treatment with the tested substances. The cytotoxic effect on cells exposed to BPA alone, in comparison to the control cells without treatment, was observed in both assays (P < 0.0001). It was confirmed that BPA reduces both the metabolic activity and the proliferation of cells. After the cell treatment with agrimony, the metabolic activity had increased to reach over the control (101.52 %), while reducing the proliferation of the cells. The protective role of agrimony against cytotoxicity caused by BPA was observed after cell treatment with agrimony in combination with lower concentrations of BPA (12.5; 25 and 50 µg.ml–1). The slight improvement in the adherence was observed in cells treated with these combinations, in comparison to the cells treated with BPA alone. On the other hand, the metabolic activity was slightly improved in cells treated with a combination of agrimony and BPA at higher concentrations (50 a 100 µg.ml–1). This supported our assumption that agrimony can protect a model organism against cytotoxicity caused by BPA.

Zirconium(IV) Metal Organic Frameworks with Highly Selective Sorption for Diclofenac under Batch and Continuous Flow Conditions

Diclofenac (DCF) is among the most effective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and at the same time one of the most consumed drugs worldwide. Since the ever-increasing use of diclofenac poses serious threats to ecosystems, its substantial removal is crucial. To address this issue, a variety of sorbents have been employed. Herein we present the diclofenac removal properties of two metal organic frameworks, namely [Zr6O4(OH)4(NH2BDC)6]·xH2O (MOR-1) and H16[Zr6O16(H2PATP)4]·xH2O (MOR-2). Batch studies revealed fast sorption kinetics for removal of DCF− from water as well as particularly high selectivity for the drug vs. common competitive species. Moreover, the composite MOR-1-alginic acid material was utilized in a sorption column, displaying remarkable removal efficiency towards DCF− anions. Significantly, this is the first time that column sorption data for removal of NSAIDs using MOF-based materials is reported.

Abundance, fate, and effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aquatic environments

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are found in wastewater, and thus, the environment. In this study, current knowledge about the occurrence and fate of PPCPs in aquatic systems-including wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and natural waters around the world-is critically reviewed to inform the state of the science and highlight existing knowledge gaps. Excretion by humans is the primary route of PPCPs entry into municipal wastewater systems, but significant contributions also occur through emissions from hospitals, PPCPs manufacturers, and agriculture. Abundance of PPCPs in raw wastewater is influenced by several factors, including the population density and demography served by WWTPs, presence of hospitals and drugs manufacturers in the sewershed, disease burden of the population served, local regulations, and climatic conditions. Based on the data obtained from WWTPs, analgesics, antibiotics, and stimulants (e.g., caffeine) are the most abundant PPCPs in raw wastewater. In conventional WWTPs, most removal of PPCPs occurs during secondary treatment, and overall removal exceeds 90% for treatable PPCPs. Regardless, the total PPCP mass discharged with effluent by an average WWTP into receiving waters (7.35-20,160 g/day) is still considerable, because potential adverse effects of some PPCPs (such as ibuprofen) on aquatic organisms occur within measured concentrations found in surface waters.

Ring Vibrations to Sense Anionic Ibuprofen in Aqueous Solution as Revealed by Resonance Raman

We unravel the potentialities of resonance Raman spectroscopy to detect ibuprofen in diluted aqueous solutions. In particular, we exploit a fully polarizable quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) methodology based on fluctuating charges coupled to molecular dynamics (MD) in order to take into account the dynamical aspects of the solvation phenomenon. Our findings, which are discussed in light of a natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, reveal that a selective enhancement of the Raman signal due to the normal mode associated with the C-C stretching in the ring, νC=C, can be achieved by properly tuning the incident wavelength, thus facilitating the recognition of ibuprofen in water samples.

Protein-enabled detection of ibuprofen and sulfamethoxazole using solid-state nanopores

Enabled by proteins, we present an all-electrical method for rapid detection of small pharmaceuticals (ibuprofen and sulfamethoxazole [SMZ]) in aqueous media using silicon nitride pores. Specifically, we use carrier proteins, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and take advantage of their interactions with two small drug molecules to form BSA-drug complexes which can be detected by nm-diameter pores, thereby confirming the presence of small pharmaceuticals. We demonstrate detection of ibuprofen and SMZ at concentrations down to 100 nM (∼21 μg/L) and 48.5 nM (12 μg/L), respectively. We observe changes in electrical signal characteristics (reflected in event durations, rates, current magnitudes, and estimated particle diameters) of BSA-drug complexes compared to BSA-only, and differences between these two small pharmaceuticals, possibly paving a path toward developing selective sensors by identifying "electrical fingerprints" of these molecules in the future. These distinct electrical signals are likely a combined result of diffusion, electrophoretic and electroosmotic effects, interactions between the pore and particles, which depend on pore diameters, pH, and the resulting surface charges. The use of single-molecule-counting nanopores allows sensing of small pharmaceuticals, studies of protein conformational changes, and may aid in efforts to evaluate the impact of small drug molecules on aquatic and human life.

Occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in WWTP effluent-receiving water bodies and reclaimed wastewater treatment plants

There is a growing concern on the fate and the consequent ecological or health risks of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in natural or artificial water environment. The effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has been reported to be an important source of antibiotics and ARGs in the environment. WWTP effluent could be discharged into surface water bodies or recycled, either of which could lead to different exposure risks. The impact of WWTP effluents on the levels of antibiotics and ARGs in effluent-receiving water bodies and the removal efficiency of antibiotics and ARGs in reclaimed wastewater treatment plants (RWTPs) were seldom simultaneously investigated. Thus, in this study, we investigated the occurrence of antibiotics and ARGs in four WWTP effluents, and their downstream effluent-receiving water bodies and RWTPs in seasons of low-water-level. The total concentrations of ofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, roxithromycin, azithromycin, erythromycin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, and sulfamethoxazole in the secondary effluents were 1441.6-4917.6 ng L^-1. Ofloxacin had the highest concentration. The absolute and relative abundances of total ARGs (qnrD, qnrS, ermA, ermB, tetA, tetQ, sul1, and sul2) in the secondary effluents were 10³-10⁴ copies mL^-1 and 10^-4-10^-2 ARG/16S rRNA. Sul1 and sul2 were the major species with the highest detection frequencies and levels. In most cases, WWTP effluents were not the major contributors to the levels and species of antibiotics and ARGs in the surface water bodies. Four RWTPs removed 43.5-98.9% of antibiotics and - 0.19-2.91 log of ARGs. Antibiotics and ARGs increased in chlorination, ozonation and filtration units. Antibiotics had significantly positive correlations with ARGs, biological oxygen demands, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and ammonia nitrogen in the four effluent-receiving water bodies. In RWTPs, the total concentrations of antibiotics showed a significant positive correlation with the total abundance of ARGs.

Quantification of pharmaceuticals in the sealant fluids of actively used waterless urinals

Prior measurements at bench scale revealed that waterless urinal cartridges containing oily sealant fluids are capable of partitioning pharmaceuticals from urine and therefore reducing their concentration in wastewater. We sought to measure pharmaceutical removal from in-use waterless urinals. We developed a method to quantify pharmaceuticals in the sealant phase, which resulted in 79 ± 30% and 71 ± 30% recovery of eight pharmaceuticals from two sealant fluids, respectively. The method was applied to sealant samples collected over three weeks from in-use waterless urinals on a university campus. Six of eight pharmaceuticals were present in the sealant samples from 1.4 µg/L to 241 µg/L. Loads of the six pharmaceuticals detected in the sealants were removed from the receiving wastewater from 0.02 µg/day to 3.4 µg/day across the sampling period. The concentration of the pharmaceuticals were similar over time, indicating rapid saturation and washout of the sealant. We also observed relatively rapid loss of sealant at maintenance intervals consistent with the manufacturer's instructions. These findings indicate that while waterless urinals do remove some pharmaceuticals from the wastewater stream, meaningful changes to wastewater concentrations will only result if the sealant fluid and/or the urinal cartridge are significantly modified. PRACTITIONER POINTS: We developed a quantification method for pharmaceuticals in oily waterless urinal sealants. Pharmaceuticals were present at relatively low concentrations in the sealant phase of two in-use waterless urinals. We identify engineering challenges that must be overcome to meaningfully reduce pharmaceutical loads in wastewater with waterless urinals.

Deterministic and probabilistic health risk assessment for exposure to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in an Indian river

This study presents deterministic and probabilistic human health risk assessment using Monte Carlo simulations on exposure to an Indian river, Kaveri, which has been contaminated by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The NSAIDs of concern are naproxen, ibuprofen, aspirin, ketoprofen, and diclofenac. We have considered three exposure scenarios (water ingestion, dermal exposure, and fish ingestion) for four different age groups (0-5, 6-10, 11-18, and 19-70 years). Deterministic risk assessment revealed teenagers to be the most sensitive receptors and water ingestion to be the most crucial pathway contributing to maximum health risk (79 to 86%). Based on the results of Monte Carlo simulations, it was found that the probability of exceeding the deterministic mean risks ranged from 17 to 39% for different exposure routes. High end risk estimates such as 95th percentiles and maximum values of HQ for the entire population did not exceed the USEPA allowable risk. This implies that the NSAIDs at the detected concentrations in the Kaveri river may not pose adverse health effects even in the worst-case scenario. Among the five NSAIDs, diclofenac was found to be the major contributor for health risk. Moreover, the concentration of diclofenac was just one order less than the estimated site-specific threshold concentrations. From sensitivity analysis, the most and the least impactful parameters were found to be water ingestion rate and fish ingestion rate respectively.

A comprehensive modelling approach to understanding the fate, transport and potential risks of emerging contaminants in a tropical reservoir

We developed a comprehensive integrated water quality modeling approach towards a better understanding of the fate and transport of emerging contaminants and comprehensive assessment of their potential risks in a tropical reservoir. Two representative emerging contaminants, namely Bisphenol A (BPA) and N, N-diethyltoluamide (DEET), were selected for this study. Unlike the traditional water quality modeling approach, the target emerging contaminants were modelled in four multi-compartments and coupled to a 3D-dimensional eutrophication model to investigate their interactions with other water quality state variables. First, the integrated model was calibrated and validated in four multi-compartments against an observed dataset in 2014. Subsequently, the correlation analysis between emerging contaminants and general water quality parameters were conducted. The potential ecological risks in this reservoir were also assessed via the trophic state index (TSI) and coupled to a species sensitivity distribution (SSD)-Risk Quotient (RQ) method. Finally, the model was applied to describe the dynamics of the two emerging contaminants and examine the direct and indirect influences of other environmental factors on their multi-compartment distributions in the aquatic environment. The comprehensive approach provides new insights into dynamic modeling of the fate and transport of emerging contaminants, their interactions with other state variables as well as an assessment of their potential risks in aquatic ecosystems.

Linear and nonlinear investigations for the adsorption of paracetamol and metformin from water on acid-treated clay

Natural clays are considered a safe, low-cost, and sound sorbent for some pharmaceutical and body care products from water. Metformin (MF) and paracetamol (PA) are of the most consumable drugs worldwide. A portion of natural clay was treated with distilled water, and another part was treated with hydrochloric acid. The water-treated clay (WTC) and the acid-treated clay (ATC) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption isotherm. Batch experiments were employed to investigate the influence of contact time and solution parameters on the adsorption of PA and MF on WTC and ATC. 30 min attained the equilibrium for all sorbent-sorbate systems. Both sorbents fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with a preference to the nonlinear fitting, and the mechanism of adsorption partially fitted the liquid-film diffusion model. The PA and MF adsorption on WTC and ATC fitted the Freundlich model in preference to nonlinear fitting. The adsorption of pollutants on both sorbents was spontaneous, exothermic, and physisorption in nature. Even at low concentrations, both WTC and ATC showed efficiency above 80% in removing PA and MF from tab water, groundwater, and Red seawater. These findings nominated natural clay as an alternative to the costly nanomaterials as sorbents for removing pharmaceutical contaminants from water.

Removal of diclofenac from aqueous solutions by adsorption on thermo-plasma expanded graphite

The adsorption of diclofenac on thermo-plasma expanded graphite (a commercial product) from water solutions was investigated. The adsorbent material was characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, Raman and X-ray diffraction analyses. Typical diffractogram and Raman spectrum of graphitic material, dimension of 24.02 nm as crystallite dimension and a surface area of 47 m² g^-1 were obtained. The effect of pH on the adsorption capacity was evaluated in the range 1-7 and the adsorption mechanism was described by kinetic and isothermal studies. Pseudo-second order and Dubinin-Radushkevich models agreed with theoretical values of adsorption capacity (i.e. 400 and 433 mg g^-1, respectively) and resulted to be the best fit for kinetics and isothermal experimental data. The thermodynamics of the process was evaluated by plotting the adsorption capacity/concentration ratio at the equilibrium as a function of different values of the multiplicative inverse of temperature. Moreover, the adsorbent regeneration was also investigated, comparing two different remediation techniques. Solvent washing performed with NaOH 0.2 M and thermo-treatment carried out by heating in an oven at 105 °C for 2 h and then at 200 °C for 4 h. The thermo-treatment was the best technique to regenerate the adsorbent, ensuring same performance after 4 cycles of use and regeneration.

Indicator Compounds Representative of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) Found in the Water Cycle in the United States

The presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in the aquatic environment has recently become a global issue. The very large number of CECs reported in the literature makes it difficult to interpret potential risks as well as the removal efficiencies, especially for the more recalcitrant compounds. As such, there is a need for indicator compounds that are representative of CECs detected in systems worldwide. In an effort to develop such a list, five criteria were used to address the potential for applying indicator compounds; these criteria include usage, occurrence, resistance to treatment, persistence, and physicochemical properties that shed light on the potential degradability of a class of compounds. Additional constraints applied included the feasibility of procuring and analyzing compounds. In total, 22 CECs belonging to 13 groups were selected as indicator compounds. These compounds include acetaminophen and ibuprofen (analgesic); erythromycin, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim (antibiotics); diazepam and fluoxetine (antidepressants); carbamazepine (antiepileptic); atenolol and propranolol (β-blockers); gemfibrozil (blood lipid regulator); tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate (TCEP) (fire retardant); cotinine (nicotine metabolite); atrazine, metolachlor, and N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) (pesticides); 17β-estradiol and cholesterol (steroids); caffeine (psychomotor stimulant); perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) (surfactants); and iopromide (X-ray contrast agent). These thirteen groups of compounds represent CECs with the greatest resistance to treatment processes, most persistent in surface waters, and detected with significant frequency throughout the water cycle. Among the important implications of using indicator compounds are the ability to better understand the efficacy of treatment processes as well as the transport and fate of these compounds in the environment.

Occurrence and Fate of Emerging Pollutants in Water Environment and Options for Their Removal

Emerging pollutants (EPs) are chemicals known to cause major impacts on the terrestrial, aquatic life and human health as a result of their chronic and acute toxicity. Although lots of studies on EPs behavior in the aquatic environment are currently available in literature, an urgent requirement exists to complete toxicological studies and develop and implement efficient and ecological methods for their removal. This paper raises some relevant problems related to water environment pollution with EPs, the risks they can generate for aquatic life and humans and opportunities to reduce the effects of pollution by EPs removal. Categories of emerging chemicals of concern in the environment, their sources, fate and impacts, with some examples are discussed. Organic UV filters are shortly presented as a relative new EPs category, with a focus on the need to develop extensive experimental studies on their environmental occurrence, fate and removal. Furthermore, sources for the aquatic environment resulting from discharging EPs directly into rivers from wastewater treatment plants are examined. The incidence of environmental and human health risks related to EPs is also considered. The removal of EPs from the environment as a solution to risk mitigation is addressed, with emphasis on several non-conventional processes involving biological removal of EPs. The paper provides a critical look at the current challenges posed by the presence of emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment, with critical comments and recommendations for further research to reduce the impact of EPs on water and human health and improve the performance of developed methods for their removal.

Temporal-spatial variation and environmental risk assessment of pharmaceuticals in tributaries of the Han River watershed, South Korea

Eight compounds from three categories of pharmaceuticals [5 antibiotics, 2 non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and 1 anti-epileptics] were monitored at 24 sites in the tributaries of the Han River watershed in South Korea, 2016. The seasonal occurrence, temporal-spatial variation, potential compound source(s), and a risk assessment of this watershed, which is the largest drinking water source in the country, were investigated. Clarithromycin was detected most frequently (72.2%) with the greatest median concentration (0.151 ± 0.072 μg L^-1), followed by carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole. The seasonality of the pharmaceuticals was observed, with higher concentrations and detection frequencies in spring than in summer and autumn; this was possibly caused by lower levels of microbial activities associated with lower water temperatures than other seasons. In terms of geographical variation, urban areas had higher pharmaceutical concentrations than rural areas, which was attributed to the former's high population density and largest wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) regardless of season. The total concentration and detection frequency of WWTPs were 12.4 and 2.5 times higher in downstream sites than upstream sites, thereby conveying that WWTPs were the main source for the presence of pharmaceuticals in tributaries. According to the results produced from calculations of the risk quotient (RQ) of aquatic organisms, clarithromycin and sulfamethazine were identified as posing relatively high ecological risk (RQ > 1) during the spring that was identified for this study. This study can provide policymakers with scientific support for prioritizing pollutant management and collections of global data on emerging pollutants.

Cu2O as an emerging semiconductor in photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic treatment of water contaminated with organic substances: a review

A wide range of semiconductor photocatalysts have been used over the years in water treatment to eliminate toxic organic substances from wastewater. The quest for visible or solar light driven photocatalysts with striking merits such as wide range of applications, ease of preparation, tailored architecture that gives rise to improved performance, ability of dual existence as both p type or n type semiconductor, among others, presents copper(i) oxide as a promising photocatalyst. This paper reviews the recent applications of Cu2O in photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic treatment of water laden with organic pollutants such as dyes and pharmaceuticals. It covers the various modes of synthesis, morphologies and composites or heterostructures of Cu2O as found in the literature. Concluding remarks and future perspectives on the application of Cu2O are presented.

A multibiomarker approach to assess toxic effects of wastewater treatment plant effluents and activated defence mechanisms in marine (Ruditapes philippinarum) and fresh water (Corbicula fluminea) bivalve species

Since it has been demonstrated that urban effluents can have adverse effects on aquatic organisms, a multibiomarker study was used to evaluate the effects of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents discharged into the marine and freshwater environments on clams in Cádiz, Spain. One bioassay was performed in the Bay of Cádiz, exposing Ruditapes philippinarum (marine) to a reference site as well as two sites close to WWTP discharges for 14 days. A second bioassay was performed in the Guadalete River, exposing Corbicula fluminea (fresh water) to three sites for 21 days. The biomarkers analysed included defence mechanisms and various toxic effects. Results indicated that WWTP effluents activated defence mechanisms and induced toxic effects in clams exposed to both environments, thus indicating bioavailability of contaminants present in water. Elevated enzymatic activity was found in clams deployed in La Puntilla and El Trocadero compared to control clams and those exposed to the reference site, and 96% of clams deployed at G2 in the Guadalete River died before day 7. Clams exposed to G1 and G3 indicated significant differences in all biomarkers analysed with respect to control clams (p < 0.05). Both species were sensitive to contaminants present in studied sites. This is the first time that these species were used in cages to assess the environmental risk of wastewater effluent discharges in freshwater and marine column environments. The multibiomarker approach provided important ecotoxicological information and is useful for the assessment of the bioavailability and effect of contaminants from WWTP effluents on marine and fresh water invertebrates.

Occurrence, distribution, and health risk assessment of 20 personal care products in indoor and outdoor swimming pools

The distribution of 20 personal care products (PCPs), including seven preservatives, six UV filters, five anticorrosion agents, and two antimicrobials, were determined in 40 swimming pools using solid phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Among 14 targets detected, 1H-benzotriazole and triclocarban were observed in all samples. The detected concentrations of preservatives, UV filters, anticorrosion agents, and antimicrobials were in the ranges of not detected (nd)-179 ng L^-1, nd-289 ng L^-1, nd-58.4 ng L^-1, and nd-56.9 ng L^-1, respectively. The presence of preservatives, UV filters and antimicrobials in pool waters might be mainly brought in by human activities while anticorrosion agents were mainly from the source water. Furthermore, the concentrations of methylparaben, ethylparaben, 1H-benzotriazole, 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole, 5-chloro-1H-benzotriazole, and 5,6-dimethyl-1H-benzotriazole in indoor pools were found higher than those in outdoor pools. The longer opening time and weaker light intensity for indoor pools might cause the difference. The redundancy analysis showed significantly negative correlations between the concentrations of parabens and the contents of residual chlorine in the pool waters. A higher chlorine residue may promote the decomposition of parabens. Health risk assessment showed that skin penetration would be the main approach for the intake of PCPs by swimmers while swimming. Compared with the non-athletic swimmers, the athletic swimmers might be more sensitive, but the health risks for both groups of swimmers could be negligible.

Assessing the removal of organic micropollutants from wastewater by discharging drinking water sludge to sewers

Discharging drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS) to sewers could be an efficient waste management strategy with the potential to replace chemical dosing for pollutant control. This study for the first time investigated the fate of 28 different organic micropollutants (MPs) due to the dosing of iron-rich and aluminum-rich DWTS in a pilot rising main sewer. Nine MPs had an initial rapid removal within 1-hr (i.e., 10-80%) due to Fe-DWTS dosing. The formation of FeS particles due to Fe-DWTS dosing was responsible for the removal of dissolved sulfides (80% reduction comparing to control sewer). Further particle characterization using SEM-EDS, XRD and ATR-FTIR confirmed that FeS particles formation played an important role in the removal of MPs from wastewater. Adsorption of MPs onto the FeS particles was likely the possible mechanism for their rapid removal. In comparison to iron-rich DWTS, aluminum-rich DWTS had very limited beneficial effects in removing MPs from wastewater. The degradability of degradable MPs, including caffeine, paraxanthine, paracetamol, metformin, cyclamate, cephalexin, and MIAA were not affected by the DWTS dosing. Some non-degradable MPs, including cotinine, hydroxycotinine, tramadol, gabapentin, desvenlafaxine, hydrochlorothiazide, carbamazepine, fluconazole, sulfamethoxazole, acesulfame, saccharin and sucralose were also not impacted by the DWTS dosing. This study systematically assessed the additional benefits of discharging Fe-DWTS to the sewer network i.e., the removal of MPs from the liquid phase thereby reducing its load to the treatment plant. The results corroborate the discharge of Fe-rich DWTS in sewers as an effective and beneficial way of managing the waste by-product.

Cardiovascular drugs and lipid regulating agents in surface waters at global scale: Occurrence, ecotoxicity and risk assessment

Cardiovascular drugs and lipid regulating agents have emerged as major groups of environmental contaminants over the past decades. However, knowledge about their occurrence in freshwaters and their ecotoxicity is still limited. Here, we critically summarize the presence of 82 cardiovascular drugs and lipid regulating agents at a global-scale and represent their effects on aquatic organisms. Only about 71% of these pharmaceuticals in use have been analyzed for their residues in aquatic ecosystems and only about 24% for their effects. When detected in surface waters, they occurred at concentrations of dozens to hundreds of ng/L. In wastewaters, they reached up to several μg/L. Effects of cardiovascular drugs and lipid regulating agents have been extensively studied in fish and a few in invertebrates, such as Daphnia magna and mussels. These pharmaceuticals affect cardiac physiology, lipid metabolism, growth and reproduction. Besides, effects on spermatogenesis and neurobehavior are observed. Environmental risks are associated with beta-blockers propranolol, metoprolol, and lipid lowering agents bezafibrate and atorvastatin, where adverse effects (biochemical and transcriptional) occurred partially at surface water concentrations. In some cases, reproductive effects occurred at environmentally relevant concentrations. This review summarizes the state of the art on the occurrence of cardiovascular drugs and lipid regulating agents at a global-scale and highlights their risks to fish. Further research is needed to include more subtle changes on heart function and to explore non-investigated drugs. Their occurrence in freshwaters and impact on a diverse array of aquatic organisms are particularly needed to fully assess their environmental hazards and risks.

Full-scale investigation of ferrous dosing in sewers and a wastewater treatment plant for multiple benefits

This study demonstrates the full scale application of iron dosing in a metropolitan wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the upstream sewer system for multiple benefits. Two different dosing locations, i.e., the WWTP inlet works (Trial-1) and upstream sewer network (Trial-2) were tested in this study. Both dosing trials achieved multiple benefits such as sulfide control, phosphate removal and improved sludge dewaterability. During Trial-1, a sulfide reduction of >90% was achieved at high dosing rates (>19 kgFe ML^-1) of ferrous chloride in the inlet works and in Trial-2 the in-sewer ferrous dosing had significant gas phase hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) concentration reduction in the sewer network. The ferrous dosing enhanced the phosphate removal in the bioreactor up to 76% and 53 ± 2% during Trial-1 & 2, respectively. The iron ending up in the anaerobic sludge digester reduced the biogas H₂S concentration by up to 36% and 45%, respectively. The dewaterability of the digested sludge was improved, with relative increases of 9.7% and 9.8%, respectively. The presence of primary clarifier showed limited impact on the downstream availability of iron for achieving the afore-mentioned multiple benefits. The iron dosing enhanced the total chemical oxygen demand removal in the primary clarifier reaching up to 49% at the high dose rates during Trial-1 and 42 ± 1% during Trial-2. This study demonstrated that multiple benefits could be achieved independent of the iron dosing location (i.e., at the WWTP inlet or in the network). Further, iron dosing at both locations enhances primary settling, beneficial for bioenergy recovery from wastewater.

Waterless Urinals Remove Select Pharmaceuticals from Urine by Phase Partitioning

We investigated the potential for waterless urinal sealants fluids to remove pharmaceuticals from urine. ¹H NMR, FTIR, and GC/MS characterization of the fluids indicated that they are mostly composed of aliphatic compounds. Removal of ethinyl estradiol was >40% for two of the three sealant fluids during simulated urination to a urinal cartridge but removal of seven other compounds with greater hydrophilicity was <30%. At equilibrium with Milli-Q water, ≥ 89% partitioning to the sealant phase was observed for three compounds with pH adjusted log K_ow (log D_ow) > 3.5. At equilibrium with synthetic urine, removal ranged widely from 2% to 100%. K_ow was poorly correlated with removal for both matrices at equilibrium, but D_ow was correlated with removal from synthetic urine for two of the three sealants, indicating that ionization and hydrophilicity control partitioning between the urine and sealant phases. To improve removal during urination, where equilibrium is not achieved, we increased the hydraulic retention time 100-fold over that of typical male urination. Removal of specific hydrophobic compounds increased, indicating that both hydrophobicity and kinetics control removal. Removal of ethinyl estradiol was ≥90% for all sealants in the increased hydraulic retention time experiment, demonstrating the potential for implementation to female urinals.

Carbamazepine degradation by heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate with lanthanum cobaltite perovskite: Performance, mechanism and toxicity

The widely used carbamazepine (CBZ) is one of the most persistent pharmaceuticals and suffers insufficient removal efficiency by conventional wastewater treatment. A synthesized Co-based perovskite (LaCoO₃) was used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in order to degrade CBZ. Results showed that LaCoO₃ exhibited an excellent performance in PMS activation and CBZ degradation at neutral pH, with low cobalt leaching. The results of FT-IR and XPS verified the high structurally and chemically stability of LaCoO₃ in PMS activation. Electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis suggested the generation of radical species, such as sulfate radicals (SO₄^-) and hydroxyl radicals (OH). Radical quenching experiments further revealed the responsibility of SO₄^- as the dominant oxidant for CBZ oxidation. Ten products were detected via the oxidation of CBZ, with the olefinic double bond attacked by SO₄^- as the initial step. Hydroxylation, hydrolysis, cyclization and dehydration were involved along the transformation of CBZ. The toxicity of CBZ solution was significantly reduced after treating by PMS/LaCoO₃.

Spatial and Temporal Distribution of BPA in the Canadian Freshwater Environment

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a manmade chemical that is only found in the environment due to anthropogenic activities. A total of 1150 surface freshwater samples were collected and analysed for BPA at 44 sampling sites in Canada from 2012 to 2018. The resultant concentrations ranged from 3.05 to 1888.51 ng/L. In addition, 64% of the samples were reported to be under the detection limit of the laboratory. In comparison, the Federal Environmental Quality Guideline for the protection of aquatic life is 3500 ng/L. Sampling sites were categorised into four groups based on the dominant activities present upstream in their watersheds: reference sites, mixed use sites, urban sites, and municipal waste water treatment plants (MWWTP) associated sites. Based on the results of this study, detections of BPA in water samples were more frequent in urban and MWWTP-associated sites. Additionally, there does not seem to be a statistically significant temporal (upward or downward) or spatial trend in BPA concentrations in Canadian surface waters from 2012 to 2018 only. Overall, Canadian BPA results are of similar concentrations to that of other countries in Asia and Europe.

Paracetamol affects the expression of detoxification- and reproduction-related genes and alters the life traits of Daphnia magna

Paracetamol (APAP) is a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and has been frequently detected in aquatic environment. However, limited information is provided about the toxic effects and detoxification mechanism of APAP in aquatic invertebrates. In the present study, the change of life traits of Daphnia magna (e.g., body length, growth rate and reproduction) was investigated under the chronic APAP exposure (0-5000 μg/L) for 21 day, and the effects of APAP on the expression of the detoxification- and reproduction-related genes including HR96, CYP360A8, CYP314, MRP4, P-gp, EcR and Vtg in the acute exposure (up to 96 h) were also determined. Results showed that the molting frequency, days to the first brood and days to the first egg production of D. magna were affected under the 50 μg/L concentration of APAP in the chronic exposure test. In the acute test, the transcriptional expression of HR96 was up-regulated under APAP exposure for 24 and 48 h. Similar performances were also observed in the expression of CYP360A8, CYP314, MRP4 and P-gp. However, with exposure time extended to 96 h, the induction of HR96 decreased or even reversed in some cases. It may indicate that the defense system in Daphnia is activated for a short time of exposure or becomes adaptive after longer term of exposure. APAP exposure also affected reproduction-related genes expression, which was related to the exposure time and concentration of APAP. In summary, APAP significantly affected the expression of genes associated with detoxification metabolism and altered some physiological parameters in D. magna.

The Beast of Beauty: Environmental and Health Concerns of Toxic Components in Cosmetics

Cosmetic products are used in large quantities across the world. An increasing number of chemical compounds are being added to the formulation of cosmetic products as additives, fragrances, preservatives, stabilizers, surfactants, dye and shine to potentiate their quality, property and shelf life. Owing to their widespread use, active residues of cosmetic products are continuously introduced into the environment in several ways. Many of these chemicals are bioactive and are characterized by potential bioaccumulation ability and environmental persistence, thus exerting a major risk to humans and the health of ecosystems. Hence, the indiscriminate consumption of cosmetics may present a looming issue with significant adverse impacts on public health. This review intends to spotlight a current overview of toxic ingredients used in formulating cosmetics such as parabens, triclosan, benzalkonium chloride, 1,4-dioxane, plastic microbeads, formaldehyde, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, sunscreen elements (organic and inorganic UV filters) and trace metals. Specific focus is given to illustrate the biological risks of these substances on human health and aquatic system in terms of genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, neurotoxicity mutagenicity, and estrogenicity. In addition to conclusive remarks, future directions are also suggested.

Solid base Mg-doped ZnO for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation of isoniazid: Performance and mechanism

Magnesium-doped ZnO (denoted as x-MgZnO where x represented the molar ratio of Mg to the sum of Mg and Zn) powders synthesized by the traditional thermal decomposition were used as catalysts for ozonation of isoniazid (20 mg/L) at the initial pH of 7.2. Magnesium substituted zinc in wurtzite structure and the Zn-O-Mg bond was formed in Mg-doped ZnO on the basis of the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The removal efficiencies of isoniazid were enhanced in Mg-doped ZnO catalytic ozonation processes (57.7% by 0.05-MgZnO and 76.3% by 0.10-MgZnO in 9 min), compared with ozonation alone (50.5%) and ZnO catalytic ozonation (49.5%). The removal efficiencies of total organic carbon (TOC) were also improved in Mg-doped ZnO catalytic ozonation processes. When the initial pH of 7.2 was lower than the pH_PZC (point of zero charge) of Mg-doped ZnO, surface hydroxyl groups of the catalysts were protonated and the solution pH gradually increased during Mg-doped ZnO catalytic ozonation. The increase in the solution pH value mainly induced ozone decomposition into superoxide radical (O₂^-). Furthermore, protonated surface hydroxyl groups (S-OH₂⁺) on Mg-doped ZnO also contributed a little to ozone decomposition. The 0.10-MgZnO powder showed high stability after continuous use in the process. Additionally, we proposed a possible degradation pathway for the oxidation of isoniazid in Mg-doped ZnO catalytic ozonation on the basis of intermediates detected. This work provides an insight into the mechanism for basic sites of solid base in heterogeneous catalytic ozonation.

Metal-Organic Framework@Carbon Hybrid Magnetic Material as an Efficient Adsorbent for Pollutant Extraction

The preparation of a hybrid magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF)@carbon from a MOF-derived porous carbon is reported. MOF-74(Co) is used as a precursor for the synthesis of a magnetic carbon with homogeneous cobalt particle distribution (C-MOF-74) by a direct carbonization step. The cobalt particles present in the carbon are partially converted to zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-67 by reaction with 2-methylimidazole to obtain a core-shell ZIF-67@C-MOF-74. The effect of the reaction time and 2-methylimidazole concentration in the conversion procedure is studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning microscopy. Because of its high surface area, dual porosity, and magnetic properties, ZIF-67@C-MOF-74 exhibits high extraction capacity (180 mg g^-1), fast adsorption rate, and excellent recyclability for Congo red adsorption. In addition, the prepared material shows high efficiency in the extraction of different phenolic compounds. The developed procedure can be easily adapted to different carbons and MOFs, thus potentially enabling the preparation of a wide number of new hybrid materials.

Insights on adsorption of carbamazepine onto iron oxide modified diatomaceous earth: Kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, and mechanisms

To ameliorate adsorbent recovery by an external magnetic field, naturally occurring diatomaceous earth (DE) was modified with iron-oxide, characterized and applied for adsorption of carbamazepine (CBZ) from synthetic wastewater using batch equilibration method. The fabricated adsorbent was characterized using XRF, XRD, SEM-EDX, FT-IR, BET surface area analysis, VSM and pH of point of zero charge (pH_pzc) determination. The adsorption rate was described by the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model suggesting a physisorption controlled rate-determining step. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to linear and nonlinear isotherm models, viz Langmuir and Freundlich models, and were best described by Freundlich nonlinear equations implying heterogeneous multilayer adsorption. The best-fitting kinetic and isotherm model was determined using four mathematical error functions. The thermodynamic parameters, namely enthalpy (ΔH = -26.4 kJ mol^-1), Gibbs free energy (ΔG = -2.22 kJ mol^-1 at 298 K), entropy (ΔS = -34.0 kJ mol^-1), indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous, exothermic, and physical process. The adsorption mechanism is postulated to involve cation-π interactions. Modified diatomaceous earth is a potentially excellent, low-cost, and novel sorbent for CBZ adsorption with 88% removal in 180 min and provides a possible alternative adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Monitoring the release of anti-inflammatory and analgesic pharmaceuticals in the receiving environment

The occurrence of anti-inflammatory and analgesic pharmaceuticals (AIAPs) in the effluents of 16 hospitals, influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), the contribution and mass load of each hospital to WWTP influent, and the removal efficiencies in WWTP were investigated. Environmental risk was also evaluated by toxicity tests using organisms from three different trophic levels. Acetaminophen had the highest concentration in summer and winter samples, followed by ketoprofen, ibuprofen, and naproxen. The total daily load of AIAPs detected in influent of WWTP was 1677 mg/day/1000 inhabitants in summer and 5074 mg/day/1000 inhabitants in winter. The contribution of 16 hospitals to the total AIAP load in influent of WWTP was 11.30% in summer and 7.09% in winter. The highest mass loads were calculated as 203 mg/bed.day in general hospital in summer and 300 mg/bed.day in pediatric hospital in winter. The removal efficiencies of AIAPs in WWTP ranged between 13% and 100% in summer and 0.88% and 99% in winter. WWTP is not sufficient to remove all the AIAPs. Diclofenac (in summer), mefenamic acid, indomethacin, and phenylbutazone exhibited poor removal below 50%. The effluents of the WWTP exhibited a low risk for fish and Daphnia magna and an insignificant risk for algae.
