Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health problems are the leading cause of disease burden among young people in India. While evidence shows that youth mental health and resilience can be improved with group interventions in school settings, such an intervention has not been robustly evaluated in informal urban settings. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate whether the Nae Disha 3 group intervention could improve youth resilience, mental health and gender equal attitudes among disadvantaged young people from low-income urban communities in India. METHODS This cluster randomised controlled trial used an analytic sample of 476 adolescents and young adults aged 11-25 years from randomised clusters in urban Dehradun, India. The 251 intervention group participants were 112 boys and 139 girls, and the 225 young people in the wait-control group were 101 boys and 124 girls. Five validated tools measuring resilience gender equity and mental health were filled by participants at three different points in time. RESULTS Difference in difference (DiD) analysis at T2 showed that scores improved among girls in intervention group, for adjusted model, resilience (DiD = 4.12; 95% CI: 2.14, 6.09) and among boys, for resilience (DiD = 5.82; 95% CI: 1.57, 9.74). CONCLUSIONS The Nae Disha 3 intervention among disadvantaged urban youth moderately improved resilience for both young men and women, though it did not significantly impact mental health, self-efficacy, or gender-equal attitudes. We establish potential merit for this approach to youth mental health but recommend further research to examine active ingredients and the ideal duration of such group interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although previous studies demonstrated an association between fast food intake and anxiety symptoms in adolescents, this relationship has not been studied in Chinese multi-ethnic adolescents. The purpose of this study is to investigate the aforementioned association and the potential moderating effect of regulatory emotional self-efficacy (RESE) among Chinese multi-ethnic adolescents. METHODS A cluster random sampling of 8500 middle school students from 11 counties in Yunnan province was conducted. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 was utilized to assess anxiety symptoms, while the food frequency questionnaire was employed to gather data on eating behaviors. The association between fast food intake, RESE, and anxiety symptoms was analyzed using generalized linear models. The moderating effect of RESE on the association between fast food intake and anxiety symptoms was examined using structural equation models. RESULTS The positive rate of anxiety symptoms in middle school students was 48.5 % (4120/8500). The positive rate of depressive symptoms in females (53.3 %, 2301/4316) was higher than that in males (43.5 %, 1819/4184). Chinese fast food intake (males vs females: β = 0.26, 95%CI:0.14-0.39; β = 0.16, 95%CI:0.02-0.29), expressing positive affect (β = -0.04, 95%CI:-0.07-0.01; β = -0.06, 95%CI:-0.10-0.03) and managing anger/irritation affect (β = -0.11, 95%CI:-0.14-0.08; β = -0.16, 95%CI:-0.19-0.12) was associated with anxiety symptoms in males and females (all P < 0.05). Takeaway fast food intake (β = 0.19, 95%CI:0.02-0.35) and managing despondency/distress affect (β = -0.08, 95%CI:-0.12-0.04, P < 0.001) was associated with anxiety symptoms in females (all P < 0.05). RESE significantly inversely moderated the association between fast food intake and anxiety symptoms (all participants: β = -0.11; males: β = - 0.08; females: β = - 0.14; all P < 0.01). LIMITATIONS Association observed in the cross-sectional study is uncertain and need to be confirmed in cohort studies. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that fast food intake may be associated with an increased risk of anxiety symptoms among Chinese multi-ethnic adolescents, while good RESE can potentially mitigate this risk.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Self-harm behaviour is commonly observed in adolescents and can serve as a potential warning sign for suicide. It is prevalent among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, with a median lifetime prevalence of 10.3%. The negative impacts of adolescent self-harm include poor educational performance, impaired physical functioning and unemployment. Despite its significance, there is limited knowledge and intervention programmes addressing self-harm in sub-Saharan Africa. OBJECTIVE The proposed scoping review aims to identify and analyse the current literature on the types and factors associated with self-harm among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. The findings will guide future systematic reviews and qualitative and quantitative studies that will help address the knowledge gap. Findings from this study will also inform strategies to address this critical issue. METHODS This scoping review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Studies on self-harm among adolescents between ages 10 and 19 years in any sub-Saharan African country done between 2000 and 2024 will be included. The literature search will be conducted across the following databases: Embase (Ovid), Medline (Ovid), PsycINFO (Ovid), PubMed, African Journals Online and African Index Medicus (WHO). Additional relevant articles will be searched in grey literature databases such as Google Scholar, conference proceedings, PhD theses and dissertations. Two reviewers will conduct title and abstract screening as well as full-text screening, with any conflicts resolved by a third independent reviewer. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethics approval is not required for this scoping review protocol. The review process and findings will be shared with and informed by relevant knowledge users. The findings of this review will be shared globally through an open-access peer-reviewed publication and conference presentations. The results will provide new insights for future systematic reviews and both quantitative and qualitative studies. Additionally, they will inform policies and intervention programmes for self-harm among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract
Importance Improving mental health of young people is a major societal challenge, particularly among the high numbers of young people living in deprived urban areas. Objective To identify factors associated with depression and anxiety among young people in deprived urban areas in South America. Design, Setting, and Participants This case-control study recruited adolescents (age 15-16 years) and young adults (age 20-24 years) from education and community settings in deprived areas in Bogotá, Colombia; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Lima, Peru, between April 2021 and November 2022. Participants who met threshold criteria for self-reported depression or anxiety. Community controls who did not meet the criteria were identified. Exposures Sociodemographic characteristics, stressful life events before and during the past year, substance use, social capital, sports and arts activities, social media engagement. Main Outcomes and Measures Depression, assessed using the 8-item Patient Health Questionnaire (range, 0-24, with higher scores indicating greater symptom severity), and anxiety, assessed using the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire (range, 0-21, with higher scores indicating greater symptom severity), were defined by threshold scores higher than 9. Various factors were compared between groups with and without anxiety and depression in multivariable logistic regression, testing for interactions by age group. Results Of 2402 analyzed participants, 1560 (64.9%) were female, 1080 (45.0%) were adolescents, and 1322 (55.0%) were young adults; 1437 (59.8%) met the criteria for depression and/or anxiety, and 965 (40.2%) were controls. In a multivariable model, female gender (OR, 1.99 [95% CI, 1.65-2.40), more than 2 stressful life events in the previous year (OR, 1.67 [95% CI, 1.40-2.01]), more than 7 stressful life events before the previous year (OR, 1.52 [95% CI, 1.27-1.81), lifetime consumption of sedatives (OR, 2.26 [95% CI, 1.65-3.14]), participating in arts activities in the past 30 days (OR, 1.22 [95% CI, 1.01-1.48]), and stronger engagement with social media (OR, 1.59 [95% CI, 1.34-1.89]) were independently associated with increased odds of depression and anxiety, while sports activities were associated with reduced odds (OR, 0.80 [95% CI, 0.67-0.96]). The odds of having depression and/or anxiety symptoms associated with lifetime use of sedatives were higher among adolescents (OR, 6.54 [95% CI, 3.33-14.27]) than among young adults (OR, 2.54 [95% CI, 1.79-3.66]) (P = .01 for interaction). Conclusions and Relevance In this case-control study, female gender, stressful life events, substance use, arts activities, and social media engagement were associated with greater odds of depression and anxiety, while sport activities were associated with lesser odds. The findings suggest that policies for improving mental health in deprived urban neighborhoods in South America and related research should consider similar factors associated with mental distress in adolescents and young adults.

Abstract
Background Youth mental health is an important global healthcare topic and early interventions that are timely and evidence-based to support young people can increase quality of life and lower deaths by suicide. Research exploring young people's mental health experiences and how they manage can further understanding into help-seeking processes. Objective This study aimed to explore young people's experiences of living with and managing mental health problems and how this impacts professional help-seeking. Methods Eighteen young people were recruited, aged 16-25 years, with experiences of help-seeking to services for mental health problems (N = 18). Data were analysed using Constructivist Grounded Theory methods (Charmaz, Constructing grounded theory, 2014). Findings The findings were presented across three sub-categories: (1) "Early experiences"; (2) "Conceptualising mental health" and (3) "Managing mental health". Findings expand understanding on the resource pressures that young people experience whilst managing persistent mental distress emanating from early experiences of trauma, life stressors, and developmental tasks. Findings also report lived experiences of pain, loneliness and stigma, and how individual conceptualisations of mental health are informed. The preference for self-reliance can be rooted in developmental needs or learned behaviours and how this impacts self-management and help seeking is discussed. Conclusion Through an enhanced understanding about how young people experience mental distress, developmental pressure points, marginalisation and stigma, mental health providers can prioritise individualised approaches to healthcare that can both respect a young person's individual conceptualizations and positively leverage self-management strategies, which can contribute positively to young people's development, quality of life, and healthcare outcomes.

Abstract
Background Depression is a common mental health disorder with a wide treatment gap despite the availability of a number of effective treatment options. Blended interventions adopt a novel approach in combining internet-based self-help with brief face-to-face sessions thereby combining the advantages of both approaches and offering scope to address the treatment gap. The present study examined the effectiveness of a blended intervention combining the use of guided internet-based self-help with four to six face-to-face sessions in the treatment of mild to moderate depression. Method A single group, open-label design was adopted with baseline, postintervention, and three-month follow-up assessments. The sample comprised 60 individuals with a primary diagnosis of major depressive disorder, dysthymia, or recurrent depressive disorder of mild or moderate severity meeting eligibility criteria. Standardized measures (self-report and clinician-rated) were used to examine the effectiveness of the intervention in reducing depression, improving functioning, self-esteem, and psychological recovery. A total of 40 participants completed the intervention and follow-up assessments. Results Significant improvements were noted from baseline to post-assessment for both completers' and intent-to-treat samples, with medium to large effect size on most outcome measures and maintenance of gains at follow-up. Eighty-five percent of the completers showed clinically significant improvement. Subgroups of blended intervention participants with and without pharmacotherapy showed similar outcomes. Completers were higher on interest in learning self-help skills and on the Growth subscale of psychological recovery, compared to the dropouts at baseline. Conclusion The blended intervention demonstrated effectiveness in reducing depression and improving self-esteem, and functional and psychological recovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous research indicates that the hybrid compassion-focused intervention EMIcompass may reduce stress reactivity and improve quality of life. Our aim was to investigate what components of the intervention work for whom, how, and under which circumstances to contribute to the enhancement of resilience. METHODS We conducted a process evaluation using a realist framework. First, we developed initial programme theories using compassion-focused interventions and ecological momentary intervention documents, in addition to conducting a focus group and an interview with an individual expert. Second, we tested the initial programme theories based on qualitative data from 20 participants. Third, we refined the programme theories by analysing and interpreting the data. RESULTS We identified four programme components experienced as enhancing the activation of the soothing system and the application of compassion-focused principles. EMIcompass was perceived as lowering the burden of and barriers to treatment and facilitating the translation into daily life. Intra- and interpersonal context factors interacted with the mechanisms, leading to improvement in well-being, which was identified as a main outcome. DISCUSSION The intervention worked by strengthening participants' soothing system and facilitating ecological translation leading to improved well-being. Adaptions to improve the intervention may allow for more flexibility in individual intervention trajectories acknowledging different needs and preferences.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the relationship between menstruation-related attributes and mental distress in adolescent girls. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Rangeli Municipality, Nepal, among 270 adolescent girls. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (aOR) were calculated at a 5% level of significance to identify factors associated with depression, anxiety and stress. Of 270 adolescent girls, 28.9% (95% CI: 23.5%-35.2%) experienced anxiety, 14.4% (95% CI: 10.0%-18.5%) experienced stress and 32.2% (95% CI: 26.6%-37.4%) experienced depression. Low perceived family support during menstruation (aOR: 2.87, 95% CI: 1.03-7.97), low perceived support from friends during menstruation (aOR: 4.09, 95% CI: 1.66-10.07) and experiencing moderate/severe dysmenorrhea (aOR: 2.31, 95% CI: 1.105-5.08) were associated with anxiety. Those with moderate/severe dysmenorrhoea had higher odds (aOR: 5.60, 95% CI: 1.56-20.05) of experiencing stress. Low perceived family support (aOR: 3.07, 95% CI: 1.08-8.67), low perceived support from friends (aOR: 2.77, 95% CI: 1.11-6.89) and experiencing moderate to severe dysmenorrhoea (aOR: 3.56, 95% CI: 1.63-7.79) were associated with depression. The findings underscore the importance of proper management of dysmenorrhoea and need for social support from both family and friends during menstruation as these factors are associated with psychological distress among adolescent girls.

Abstract
Objective: We examined whether meaningful subgroups of self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) would emerge within a pool of first-year college students already deemed at elevated risk. Participants: First-year undergraduates (N = 1,068) recruited in 2015-2018 Fall terms. Methods: Past-year nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) frequency, past-year number of NSSI methods used, lifetime suicide attempt (SA) history, and recency of SA were included in a latent profile analysis. Results: Four subgroups emerged: low SIB (n = 558, 52%), high NSSI only (n = 182, 17%), high SIB (n = 141, 13%), and high SA only (n = 187, 18%). Students in the high SIB group reported higher levels of suicidal ideation at baseline and follow-up in comparison to all groups. Those in the high NSSI only or high SIB groups had relatively higher levels of NSSI at baseline and follow-up. Conclusions: Findings highlight the amount of heterogeneity within a high-risk group, along with the importance of considering distal and proximal SIBs in university screening efforts.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Mental health problems are a major cause of disability, impacting nearly 20% of adolescents. Nevertheless, they are hesitant to seek help because of stigma and fear of being labelled. Adolescents often have low mental health literacy and perceive mental health problems as personal failures. To address it, our study aimed to identify subgroups within the adolescent population based on mental health knowledge, social stigma, experiences of intergroup anxiety, and endorsement of stereotypes. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 182 adolescents (50.6% male) aged 10 to 17 years (M = 13.8, SD = 2.4). Participants completed an online survey comprising the Mental Health Knowledge Schedule, Attribution Questionnaire (AQ-8-C), Intergroup Anxiety Scale, and a scale regarding stereotypes towards people with mental health problems. Cluster analysis was used to identify the subgroups. Results: We identified three subgroups: (1) "Potential Advocates", showing high mental health knowledge, low social stigma, low intergroup anxiety, and moderate endorsement of stereotypes; (2) "Ambivalents", manifesting high mental health knowledge, moderate social stigma, heightened intergroup anxiety, and low endorsement of stereotypes; and (3) "Stigmatizers", revealing low mental health knowledge, pronounced social stigma, moderate intergroup anxiety, and tendency to endorse stereotypes. Conclusions: The results highlight the multiplicity of perceptions regarding mental health and the pivotal role of knowledge, stigma, intergroup dynamics, and stereotypes in shaping attitudes. Implications for interventions targeting mental health stigma and fostering positive attitudes among adolescents are discussed, underscoring the importance of customised strategies to address the multiple needs and experiences characteristic of this developmental stage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The main objective was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the OutPatient Experience Questionnaire for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (OPEQ-CAMHS) among patients aged 16 and above, with a secondary objective of developing a parsimonious set of items and a short version of the instrument for this age group. METHODS A national pilot study was conducted with adolescents from outpatient CAMHS in Norway, testing a new digital, continuous measurement approach using a measurement instrument developed through a comprehensive methodological framework. The study assessed missing data, ceiling effects, factor structure, internal consistency, discriminant validity, and construct validity. A shorter version was derived from psychometric results. RESULTS The pilot study included responses from 555 (46.3%) patients. Low proportions of missing or "not applicable" responses were found for 18 of the 20 items, and all items were below the ceiling-effect criterion. Two scales emerged: "structure and process", and "outcome", both meeting alpha criteria. Each individual item demonstrated a stronger correlation with its expected scale than with any of the other scales. Construct validity was confirmed through associations with relevant variables expected to be associated with patient-reported experiences, including self-reported current state and well-being. The results supported a six-item short version. CONCLUSIONS Psychometric testing confirmed data quality, internal consistency, and construct validity of OPEQ-CAMHS. The short version addresses respondent burden concerns and is now ready for broad implementation in Norwegian CAMHS and potentially in similar healthcare settings worldwide.

Abstract
Child and adolescent mental health in low- and middle-income countries is a growing focus of global health policy, yet the evidence for effective intervention remains unclear. We undertook a scoping review of LMICs in the East Asia and Pacific region. We searched four databases between 2010 and 2021 for evaluated interventions targeting child and adolescent mental health. We mapped intervention studies by location, evaluation method, and target of intervention: mental health promotion, prevention, or response. We included 69 unique studies from 12 countries: 32 RCTs, 31 before-after studies, and 6 post-intervention evaluations. There were several promising intervention studies, although these had methodological limitations. Three studies addressed mental health promotion, 46 addressed prevention, and 23 addressed response. There was a disproportionate focus on "individual capacity" prevention and "clinical management" response. There were few studies in mental health promotion (through communities, policies, or legislation), prevention beyond the individual (via parents, peers, or schools), or in longer-term response. Most (62) of these interventions were undertaken in China and four South-East Asian nations. There were few studies in smaller, less wealthy nations, and only three in Pacific nations. Effective progress in global child and adolescent mental health will require greater attention and investment in these programmatic gaps and geographic areas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous variants associated with psychiatric disorders. However, it remains largely unknown on how GWAS risk variants contribute to psychiatric disorders. METHODS Through integrating two largest, publicly available, independent protein quantitative trait loci datasets of plasma protein and nine large-scale GWAS summary statistics of psychiatric disorders, we first performed proteome-wide association study (PWAS) to identify psychiatric disorders-associated plasma proteins, followed by enrichment analysis to reveal the underlying biological processes and pathways. Then, we conducted Mendelian randomization (MR) and Bayesian colocalization (COLOC) analyses, with both discovery and parallel replication datasets, to further identify protein-disorder pairs with putatively causal relationships. We finally prioritized the potential drug targets using Drug Gene Interaction Database. RESULTS PWAS totally identified 112 proteins, which were significantly enriched in biological processes relevant to immune regulation and response to stimulus including regulation of immune system process (adjusted P = 1.69 × 10-7) and response to external stimulus (adjusted P = 4.13 × 10-7), and viral infection related pathways, including COVID-19 (adjusted P = 2.94 × 10-2). MR and COLOC analysis further identified 26 potentially causal protein-disorder pairs in both discovery and replication analysis. Notably, eight protein-coding genes were immune-related, such as IRF3, CSK, and ACE, five among 16 druggable genes were reported to interact with drugs, including ACE, CSK, PSMB4, XPNPEP1, and MICB. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlighted the immunological hypothesis and identified potentially causal plasma proteins for psychiatric disorders, providing biological insights into the pathogenesis and benefit the development of preventive or therapeutic drugs for psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a French version of the Barriers to Access to Care Evaluation (BACE-3) scale that is tailored to the socio-cultural and language setting of the study. METHODS The translation of the BACE-3 into French and its validation were the two key components of this psychometric investigation. An online survey was created and circulated to French-speaking participants who volunteered to participate in the study. RESULTS For all translated questions, the reliability analysis key results (Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's Omega) were both>0.95, which is an excellent reliability value. The BACE-3 items were shown to be positively related to one another, implying excellent validity. Results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses showed that all stigma-related items were loaded under the same factor. CONCLUSIONS The BACE-3 has been validated in French, and its psychometric qualities have been thoroughly evaluated and found to be excellent.

Abstract
Adolescence is a vulnerable period for the onset of mental disorders and risk behaviours. Based on the Health-Promoting Schools Framework, whole-school interventions offer a promising strategy in this developmentally-sensitive cohort, through championing a systems-based approach to promotion and prevention that involves the key stakeholders in an adolescent's life. The evidence-base surrounding the effectiveness of whole-school interventions, however, remains inconclusive, partly due to the insufficient number of studies in previous meta-analyses. An updated systematic review and meta-analysis was thus conducted on the effectiveness of whole-school interventions promoting mental health and preventing risk behaviours in adolescence. From 12,897 search results, 28 studies reported in 58 publications were included. Study characteristics and implementation assessments were synthesized across studies, and quality appraisals and meta-analyses performed. Analyses identified a significant reduction in the odds of cyber-bullying by 25%, regular smoking by 31% and cyber-aggression by 37% in intervention participants compared to the control. Whole-school interventions thus offer substantial population health benefits through the reduction of these highly-prevalent issues affecting adolescents. The non-significant findings pertaining to the remaining eleven outcomes, including alcohol use, recreational drug use, anxiety, depression and positive mental health, are likely attributable to suboptimal translation of the Health-Promoting Schools Framework into practice and inadequate sensitivity to adolescents' local developmental needs. Given the ongoing challenges faced in the implementation and evaluation of these complex interventions, this study recommends that future evaluations assess the implementation of health-promoting activities in both intervention and control conditions and actively use this implementation data in the interpretation of evaluation findings.Preregistration: A pre-registered PROSPERO protocol (ID: CRD42023491619) informed this study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adversity in childhood is increasing in the United Kingdom. Complex health and social problems affecting children cluster in families where adults also have high need, but services are rarely aligned to support the whole family. Household level segmentation can help identify households most needing integrated support. Thus, the aim was to develop a segmentation model to identify those households with children who have high levels of complex cross-sectoral needs, to use as a case-finding tool for health and social care services, and to describe characteristics of identified households, to inform service integration. METHOD Working with stakeholders-in an English region of 2.7m population- we agreed a definition of families having complex needs which would benefit from service integration - including households with high intensity use, who had both physical and mental health problems amongst both adults and children and wider social risks. We then used individual and household linked data across multiple health and social care services to identify these households, providing an algorithm to be used in a case finding interface. Finally, to understand the needs of this segment, and to identify unmet need, to tailor support, we used descriptive statistics and Poisson regression to profile the segment and compare them with the rest of the population. RESULTS Twenty one thousand and five hundreds twenty seven households (8% of the population of the region) were identified with complex needs, including 89,631 people (41,382 children), accounting for 34% of health and social care costs for families with children, £362 million in total, of which 42% was on children in care of local authorities. The households had contact with 3-4 different services, had high prevalence of mental health problems, most frequently co-morbid with respiratory problems, with high mental health emergency service use particularly amongst teenage girls many of whom had no prior elective treatment for conditions. CONCLUSION Our model provides a potentially useful tool for identifying households that could benefit from better integration of services and targeted family support that can help break intergenerational transfer of adversity.

Abstract
Background Globally, 10% of children and adolescents live with mental health problems and often lack high-quality care. Over 80% of people facing mental health issues reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Failing to address children's mental health may prolong these challenges into adulthood, impeding their chances for a healthy life. This scoping review aims to describe the types, implementation strategies, effectiveness, and gaps of existing interventions for preventing and treating mental health problems in early childhood (<10 years) in LMICs. Methods The study employed a scoping review of experimental studies published 2007-2023. Major databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and PsycINFO were searched using key terms related to the population (children), intervention (mental and/or behavioural health programmes), and outcome (mental health problems). Three authors independently conducted search strategy, article screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. The findings were presented using descriptive analysis and narrative synthesis. Results Of 39 499 identified articles, 33 were included in the study, covering 7629 children and published between 2009-2022. Seventeen studies (51.5%) were from upper-middle-income countries, 13 (39.4%) were from lower-middle-income, and three (9.1%) were from low-income countries. Enrolment was community-based in 23 studies and health-facility based in 10 studies; the majority (79%) focused on children aged 3-8 years old. Almost two-third (63.6%) of studies were conducted in urban settings. Programmes encompassed various interventions such as parenting programmes (33.3%). A majority of studies (57.5%) employed group therapy for delivering the programme, with mental health professionals (21.2%) acting as the primary intervention providers. Interventions were primarily received by children (39.4%), followed by mothers/caregivers (33.3%). Most studies explored disruptive disorders (20 studies), social and behavioural problems (16 studies), and anxiety disorders (12 studies). Statistically significant intervention effects on child mental health outcomes were reported for 90% of published studies. Conclusions Diverse behavioural programmes that improve the mental health of young children are available and effective in LMICs. Most interventions were delivered in urban settings and focus was on the use of health care professionals. Diverse intervention approaches, including parenting programmes and group therapy, were effective in addressing various mental health issues among young children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health disorders of children and adolescents represent a key area of concern, yet child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) are neglected, especially in low- and middle-income countries. There is a clear need to provide services that are relevant to the needs of service users, but little research to date has explored their needs and experiences of services, or to identify their recommendations for service strengthening. In 1997 the South African Government introduced the "Batho Pele" ('People First') initiative in all public sector services, with the aim of putting the voices of service users at the centre of decision-making of policy development and implementation. This study sought to explore user perspectives about CAMHS in the Western Cape, one of the nine provinces of South Africa. METHODS Using focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews, qualitative data were collected from purposively sampled CAMHS users (caregivers and adolescents) across the Western Cape Province. Data were entered into NVivo, and thematic analysis was performed by two independent raters. RESULTS Results highlighted slow, inappropriate and unacceptable CAMHS at primary level of care, and lack of dedicated CAMH resources and staff rudeness at primary and secondary levels of care. Only one positive theme was identified about a new service initiative at primary care. Only specialist CAMHS (tertiary level) were regarded as well-organised. To improve CAMHS, users recommended that the processes and procedures should be restructured to become child- and family-friendly, separate CAMHS should be developed at primary and secondary levels, CAMHS should be prioritized to provide equitable services to young people with mental health disorders, and better communication and information, including formal psychoeducation should be provided to caregivers. CONCLUSIONS The data from this study provided very little support for the "Batho Pele" principles and highlighted a clear need for CAMHS strengthening in the Western Cape, and in South Africa as a whole. These findings may be similar in other low-resource settings and highlight the importance of putting "people first" by listening to their voices on an ongoing basis and at all levels of service and systems strengthening.

Abstract
Background Since the mid-20th century, mental illness has become a leading cause of health burden, particularly among adolescents and emerging adults, with most disorders emerging before the age of 25. Over the past two decades, mental ill health has surged to alarming levels, with evidence confirming that the increase is not just due to better awareness or diagnosis but reflects a genuine public health crisis. Study design/method We explore the evolving landscape of youth mental health and its contributing factors, including family dynamics, educational pressures, climate change, social media, and socio-economic challenges, potentially linked to neoliberal policies. A narrative review methodology was employed to analyze these factors and their role in the trends of mental ill-health among young people. Study results We document mental health trends since the mid-1990s, focusing on mental and substance use disorders among young people and their current needs. Potential new explanatory factors and megatrends, potentially flowing from a paradigm shift in the global political economy which has largely passed under the radar, yet which has produced fragmentation and inequality, are identified, with the COVID-19 pandemic further intensifying these trends. We discuss methodologies to estimate the contribution of these megatrends and outline potential barriers to implementation, along with strategies to overcome them. Conclusion This review calls for a comprehensive global action plan, emphasizing prevention, early intervention, and improved treatment strategies. In addition to strengthening prevention, which may take time and be elusive, immediate action is needed to innovate and expand services, which are currently under-resourced and overwhelmed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies suggests a correlation between physical activity and mental health, particularly in children and adolescents. However, the specific mechanisms underlying this relationship is not fully understood. This study was designed to investigate the potential mediating role of emotion regulation and the moderating influence of gender through a moderated mediation model. METHODS A sample size of 4763 students (mean age = 11.12 ± 1.48 years, 52.8 % females) from seven schools in Shenzhen, China, was recruited during the period of October to November 2023. The participants were administered self-reported questionnaires assessing physical activity, mental health, and emotion regulation. The moderated mediation model was analyzed. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 25.0. RESULTS The results indicate a negative correlation between physical activity and mental health problems (all p < 0.001). This association was partially mediated by both cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression (all p < 0.001). Additionally, gender significant moderated the path between physical activity and emotion regulation, specifically cognitive reappraisal (p < 0.001) and expressive suppression (p < 0.01). LIMITATIONS As a result of the cross-sectional design, no causal relationship could be established, and measurement bias should be noted. CONCLUSION Physical activity is found to have a positive effect on the mental health problem of children and adolescents with emotion regulation serve as a partial mediator in the relationship. Additionally, in the mediation model, gender influences the first half of the path.

Abstract
Importance Mental health issues among young people are increasingly concerning. Conventional psychological interventions face challenges, including limited staffing, time commitment, and low completion rates. Objective To evaluate the effect of a low-intensity online intervention on young people in Hong Kong experiencing moderate or greater mental distress. Design, Setting, and Participants This randomized clinical trial was conducted from May 12, 2022, to September 22, 2023, in Hong Kong. Participants (aged 12-30 years) were recruited from a community project, self-reported moderate to severe distress (Kessler Psychological Distress Scale score ≥5), and were randomized 1:1 to receive the low-intensity online intervention or self-help tips (waitlist group). Intervention The low-intensity online intervention group received 4 weekly 1-on-1 online sessions on stress management, sleep, or problem-solving delivered by trained psychological well-being practitioners. The waitlist group received weekly mental health tips via text messaging. Main Outcomes and Measures Primary outcomes were changes in Kessler Psychological Distress Scale scores and depression and anxiety subscale scores of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale. Secondary outcomes included general stress, overall negative emotions, quality of life, sleep quality, resilience, and self-efficacy. The primary outcome analysis was based on intention to treat with the last observation carried forward approach. Sensitivity analyses were conducted using per-protocol and multiple imputation methods. Results Of 332 screened participants, 120 (mean [SD] age, 22.4 [3.4] years; 87 [72.5%] female) were randomized. From baseline to 4 weeks, the low-intensity online intervention group and the control group both saw reductions in scores for depression (mean [SD] difference, 6.0 [7.7] and 4.8 [7.9]; P = .17; ηp2 = 0.02), anxiety (mean [SD] difference, 6.0 [7.7] and 3.5 [7.7]; P = .07; ηp2 = 0.03), and psychological distress (mean [SD] difference, 3.8 [3.8] and 2.9 [3.8]; P = .24; ηp2 = 0.01), but none of these differences were statistically significant. However, the intervention group showed greater reductions in general stress (mean [SD] difference, 7.5 [7.2] vs 4.4 [7.2]; P = .02; ηp2 = 0.05), negative emotion (mean [SD] difference, 20.3 [19.2] vs 12.7 [19.2]; P = .03; ηp2 = 0.04), and increased resilience (mean [SD] difference, 0.5 [0.6] vs 0.2 [0.6]; P = .01; ηp2 = 0.05) compared with the waitlist group. Younger participants and those with lower initial distress experienced greater improvements. The findings were supported by the per-protocol analysis but not by multiple imputation analysis. Conclusions and Relevance A low-intensity online intervention did not significantly improve distress, depressive, or anxiety symptoms but showed some potential in reducing general stress and negative emotions and improving resilience. These findings are encouraging but not definitive, and caution is needed due to missing data. These data suggest that a low-intensity online intervention may offer a scalable option for youth mental health. Trial Registration ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05510453.

Abstract
AIM Research has indicated a rise in the prevalence of depression and anxiety among adolescents over the past three decades. However, the factors underpinning increases in mental health difficulties remain poorly understood. This study examines psychological, social and environmental risk and protective factors that may explain changes in depression and anxiety among adolescents. METHODS Data were taken from two nationally representative My World Surveys of adolescents aged 12-19 years in 2012 (N = 5,490) and 2019 (N = 9,844). Survey data on depression and anxiety and a range of potential risk (e.g., alcohol use, psychotic symptoms) and protective factors (e.g., resilience, self-esteem) were assessed at both time points. Multiple group analyses assessed whether the predictive ability of risk/protective factors changed from wave 1 to wave 2. RESULTS Results showed that the prevalence of depression and anxiety increased significantly between 2012 and 2019, particularly among females. Predictors accounted for between 37% and 61% of the variance in outcomes across waves. While some risk/protective factors were consistent predictors of depression and anxiety at both waves (e.g., bullying, discrimination, optimism), reporting female gender and having higher formal help-seeking tendencies more strongly predicted anxiety at wave 2, while lower self-esteem and lower resilience (personal competence) strongly predicted both depression and anxiety at wave 2. CONCLUSION Findings highlight the need to prioritize adolescent mental health service provision, especially in females. Self-esteem and resilience are potentially important targets for supporting adolescent mental health. Further research is required to understand the causal factors associated with increases in anxiety and depression.

Abstract
Friendships are vital for the well-being of young adults, yet their social network is often reduced during episodes of life-disruptive mental distress, such as psychosis. Despite this, our study shows that young adults do either maintain or build friendships during such periods and that these relationships are crucial for recovery in youth. As research on the role of friendships in the recovery journey of this group is limited, this study explores the significance of friendships for young adults engaged in early psychosis interventions to generate insights that can inform mental health recovery practices. In-depth life-story and intensive interviews were conducted with six young adult users of early psychosis intervention OPUS. Using abductive thematic analysis, two main themes and four subthemes emerged: (1) "Seeking different kinds of recovery support with different types of friends" with subthemes (1.1) "Seeking safety in life-witnessing friendships" and (1.2) "Shaping identity with friends in communities of interest"; and (2) "Belonging and unbelonging with friends and their significance to recovery in youth" with subthemes (2.1) "Struggling with friendship expectations perpetuates social isolation" and (2.2) "Connecting with friends enables belonging to humanity as a whole." The findings highlight that, while social isolation can reinforce feelings of alienation, belonging with friends instills a sense of hope and meaning. The involvement of friends in early psychosis interventions may enhance social skills training, strengthen social bonds, and support the inclusion and well-being of young adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe mental disorders during childhood and adolescence can be chronic and disturbing, and may result in serious impairments in functioning. Research on the influence of such factors in the functional recovery of children diagnosed with severe mental illnesses is scant. This study aims to enhance understanding of the patterns and descriptions of social factors in the optimal functioning of children with severe mental illnesses. METHODS We performed content analysis on 69 medical files of children taking treatment from Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (from 2018 to 2020). We analyzed the medical files using the summative approach by identifying and quantifying certain words and phrases. The Children's Global Assessment Scale (CGAS) and data abstraction form were used to record the functioning profile and quantitative data. Socio-demographic and clinical variables were analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS A total of three major and ten sub-categories were identified from the data. The most striking categories in psychosocial environments were intrapersonal challenges, adverse living and relationship spaces, and outer structures and systems. Moderate to severe functional impairments were retrospectively observed among children. CONCLUSION Children diagnosed with severe mental illnesses and with poor functioning are the most affected group of population and hence, require proper attention.

Abstract
Adolescents in India experience body dissatisfaction and its associated adverse impacts on physical and mental health and gender equality. However, evidence-based interventions are scarce. Mental health interventions worldwide have traditionally relied upon delivery by expert providers. However, this prevents scalability, particularly in rural settings, where resources are often lacking. Therefore, this study evaluated the efficacy of a low-resource teacher-delivered mixed-gender comic-based body image intervention among adolescents in semi-rural Indian schools. A randomised controlled trial was conducted among 2631 students (50 % girls; classes 6 to 8; Mage = 12.03 years, SD = 1.22) across 41 schools around the Jaipur district in Rajasthan. Each school was randomly allocated to receive six comic-based intervention sessions (n = 1347) or lessons-as-usual (n = 1284; control). The primary outcome of body esteem and related secondary and exploratory outcomes assessing mental health and gender stereotyping were assessed at baseline, 1 week-post-intervention, and 3-months follow-up (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04317755). Linear Mixed Model analyses revealed that compared to the control group, intervention students reported significantly higher body esteem and skin shade satisfaction, and significantly lower eating pathology, internalisation of appearance ideals, and gender stereotyping, with all effects maintained at follow-up. Compared to control group, boys in the intervention group also demonstrated significantly higher body image-related life engagement and body hair satisfaction at follow-up. Both students and teachers indicated high intervention acceptability via quantitative and qualitative findings. These findings present the first effective teacher-delivered school-based body image intervention in India, which can be implemented at scale using minimal resources, and thus indicates promise regarding broader dissemination across urban and rural settings.

Abstract
Generative artificial intelligence (genAI) has potential to improve healthcare by reducing clinician burden and expanding services, among other uses. There is a significant gap between the need for mental health care and available clinicians in the United States-this makes it an attractive target for improved efficiency through genAI. Among the most sensitive mental health topics is suicide, and demand for crisis intervention has grown in recent years. We aimed to evaluate the quality of genAI tool responses to suicide-related queries. We entered 10 suicide-related queries into five genAI tools-ChatGPT 3.5, GPT-4, a version of GPT-4 safe for protected health information, Gemini, and Bing Copilot. The response to each query was coded on seven metrics including presence of a suicide hotline number, content related to evidence-based suicide interventions, supportive content, harmful content. Pooling across tools, most of the responses (79%) were supportive. Only 24% of responses included a crisis hotline number and only 4% included content consistent with evidence-based suicide prevention interventions. Harmful content was rare (5%); all such instances were delivered by Bing Copilot. Our results suggest that genAI developers have taken a very conservative approach to suicide-related content and constrained their models' responses to suggest support-seeking, but little else. Finding balance between providing much needed evidence-based mental health information without introducing excessive risk is within the capabilities of genAI developers. At this nascent stage of integrating genAI tools into healthcare systems, ensuring mental health parity should be the goal of genAI developers and healthcare organizations.

Abstract
The influence of social media on the mental health of adolescents has been controversial and the findings in the literature are inconclusive. Although prior studies have identified several factors that may cause or trigger the proposed relationship, little is known about the culture-related factors as an underlying mechanism that could explain the complexity of this association. This study addressed this gap by examining the associations between the two domains of social media (i.e., time spent on weekdays and weekends) and two mental health outcomes (anxiety and depression) in adolescents via the moderating effect of horizontal-vertical individualism and collectivism. 299 secondary school students (Mage = 15.21 years; 61% girls) from Türkiye (N = 176), Ireland (N = 70), and England (N = 53) completed self-report surveys. Spending more than four hours on weekdays and weekends was positively associated with anxiety and depression whereas spending more than two hours on social media during weekends was positively associated with anxiety in the entire sample. Horizontal and vertical individualism moderated the association between time spent on social media and depression in the entire sample. The study's strengths and limitations, along with the implications of the findings for future research, are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract
Purpose Mental disorders account for a large part of the burden of disease in young population. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between carbohydrate intakes and the risk of depression, anxiety, and stress among female adolescents. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 263 female adolescents aged 15-18 years participated. Depression, anxiety, and stress scores were determined by DASS-21 (Depression Anxiety Stress Score-21 items) questionnaire, and dietary intakes were assessed using a validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire. Crude and multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated through logistic regression analysis. Results Adolescents with depression consumed more glucose and sucrose and less lactose compared to adolescents without depression. After adjustment for all confounders, higher intakes of glucose and sucrose were significantly associated with increased risk of depression (OR glu = 1.3, P = 0.035 and OR suc = 1.41, P = 0.034), anxiety (OR glu = 1.3, P = 0.019 and OR suc = 1.81, P = 0.027), and stress (OR glu = 1.41, P = 0.046 and OR suc = 1.8, P = 0.044). In addition, increasing lactose intake was significantly associated with reducing the risk of depression (OR = 0.96, P = 0.013) and stress (OR = 0.96, P = 0.015). Conclusions This study found significant associations between dietary carbohydrate intake and mental disorders among female adolescent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Amidst increasing occurrences of disasters and traumatic events, there is growing concern about the declining mental health of young adults, who are facing rising societal pressures and uncertainty about their futures. AIMS This study investigates the interplay between collective trauma, anxiety, and resilience among young adults in the Korean context. Based on survey data collected in 2023 from 323 Korean young adults aged 18 to 34 years, a multiple linear regression and independent t-tests were used to examine their experiences of collective trauma, collective anxiety, and resilience, taking gender differences into account. RESULTS Collective anxiety was associated with resilience, but collective trauma was not. Gender differences were observed: competition- and security-related anxiety, education, and income were positively associated with resilience only for men, while fairness-related anxiety was negatively associated only with women's resilience. Adaptation-related anxiety was a significant factor for both groups. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION Certain types of collective anxiety and socioeconomic status may act as protective factors against trauma. Gender should be considered when designing mental health assessments and services for young adults to address the unique needs and challenges in building resilience and managing anxiety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many adolescents in Uganda are affected by common mental disorders, but only a few affordable treatment options are available. Digital mental health interventions offer promising opportunities to reduce these large treatment gaps, but interventions specifically tailored for Ugandan adolescents are limited. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the feasibility and acceptability of the Kuamsha program, an intervention delivered through a gamified app with low-intensity telephonic guidance, as a way to promote mental health among adolescents from the general population in Uganda. METHODS A 3-month pre-post single-arm trial was conducted with adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years living in Wakiso District, Central Uganda. The intervention was coproduced with adolescents from the study site to ensure that it was culturally acceptable. The feasibility and acceptability of the intervention were evaluated using an explanatory sequential mixed methods approach. Feasibility was assessed by collecting data on trial retention rates and treatment adherence rates. Acceptability was assessed through a questionnaire and in-depth interviews with participants following the conclusion of the intervention period. As a secondary objective, we explored the changes in participants' mental health before and after the intervention. RESULTS A total of 31 adolescents were recruited for the study. Results from the study showed high levels of feasibility and acceptability. Trial retention rates exceeded 90%, and treatment adherence was ≥80%. These results, evaluated against our predefined trial progression criteria, indicate a successful feasibility study, with all criteria exceeding the thresholds necessary to progress to a larger trial. App engagement metrics, such as time spent on the app and modules completed, exceeded existing literature benchmarks, and many adolescents continued to use the app after the intervention. In-depth interviews and questionnaire responses revealed high acceptability levels. Depressive symptoms trended toward reduction (mean difference: 1.41, 95% CI -0.60 to 3.42, Cohen d=0.30), although this was not statistically significant (P=.16). Supporting this trend, we also observed a reduction in the proportion of participants with moderate depressive symptoms from 32% (10/31) to 17% (5/29) after the intervention, but this change was also not significant (P=.10). CONCLUSIONS This study presents evidence to support the Kuamsha program as a feasible and acceptable digital mental health program for adolescents in Uganda. A fully powered randomized controlled trial is needed to assess its effectiveness in improving adolescents' mental health.

Abstract
This study examined the prevalence and correlates of mental disorders among youth in Kumasi, Ghana, through a community-based cross-sectional survey. 672 urban participants aged 6-17 years were surveyed. Mental disorders were screened using Rutter's A2 Scale for Parent Assessment of Child Behaviour, with diagnoses confirmed by the Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia. The Double Sampling method was used for weighted prevalence estimates, and correlates analysed using chi-square and logistic regression. Lifetime weighted prevalence of CAMH disorders was 30.4% (95% CI: 26.9-33.9), predominantly anxiety-related disorders, with current weighted prevalence 18.6% (95% CI: 15.7-21.5). Notably, lacking an active reading habit was associated with nearly three times the odds of mental illness. Children in the 3rd and 4th wealth quintiles had significantly higher odds of mental disorder (12- and 9-times increased odds, respectively), as did lack of caregiver homework supervision among children under 11 years. This study provides the first community-based prevalence figures for childhood mental disorders in Ghana, highlighting the link between poverty-related factors and mental health, and suggesting potential policy interventions to inform policy.

Abstract
Accumulating research on mental health emphasizes the general factor of psychopathology (p-factor) that unites various mental health issues. This study develops a psychopathological vulnerability assessment for youths, evaluating its psychometric properties and clinical utility. An umbrella review conceptualized multifactor psychopathological vulnerability, leading to a 57-item pool. A total of 11,224 individuals participated in this study. The resulting 22-item psychopathological vulnerability index (PVI) fitted the unidimensional Rasch model, demonstrating a person separation reliability of 0.78 and a Cronbach's alpha of 0.84. Cut-off points of 11 and 5, derived from latent class analysis, were used to distinguish vulnerable and high-protection populations. The PVI's concurrent and predictive hit rates ranged from 36.00% to 53.57% in clinical samples. The PVI concretized the vulnerability-stress model for identifying at-risk youths and may facilitate universal interventions by integrating the theoretical foundations of bifactor S-1 models with key symptoms from network models for theoretically grounded approaches.

Abstract
Social media influencers are popular among adolescents and could offer a unique way to reach young people at scale with body image interventions. This study explored girls' and influencers' views on having influencers deliver body image interventions through vlogs (video blogs) and to gain insight into their preferred format, content, and views on factors that encourage engagement with vlogs. Twenty-one UK based participants were recruited. Three online focus groups were conducted with adolescent girls (n = 16) aged 14-18 years and one with influencers (n = 5) aged 24-33 years, who had a collective following of over 1.5 million subscribers across social media platforms. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and four themes were generated: Choosing an influencer whose messages and core values are aligned with the topic of body image; the importance of influencer authenticity and personal experience; collaborating on content creation with mental health professionals; and the need for long-form (i.e., 10-20 min) content to address serious topics. Findings suggest having influencers deliver body image interventions to young people could be a useful approach. Results highlight the need to engage with end users from the outset of intervention development to increase the likelihood of intervention effectiveness and engagement.

Abstract
Objective: To explore relationships between mental health climate, positive mental health, sense of belonging, and depression among a U.S. national sample of Black college students. Participants: 1303 Black undergraduate and graduate students from 15 colleges and universities throughout the U.S. Methods: Data were from the 2018-2019 Healthy Minds Study. Analysis included hierarchical regression models. Results: A more positive perception of mental health climate and higher levels of both positive mental health and sense of belonging were significantly associated with lower levels of depression. Significant interactions existed between positive mental health and climate and sense of belonging and climate with buffering effects being most pronounced for students reporting high levels of positive mental health. Conclusion: Black college students' perceptions of an institution's mental health climate are associated with psychological outcomes. College health stakeholders should consider the buffering effects of protective factors on mental health when designing initiatives for Black college students.

Abstract
Background and purpose Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and the sixth most common cause of death in the US according to the Alzheimer's Association. As regards, to date, no effective treatments are available because of the multifactorial nature of the disease, therefore, a large body of recent research has been allocated to the design and development of multi-target-directed ligands that can become effective drug candidates. Experimental approach A novel series of benzamide derivatives (5a-5l) containing piperidine core were synthesized in the current work. After identification of the chemical structures of the members of this series using 1H NMR, IR, and MS spectra, their anti-acetylcholinesterase activity was assessed by the Ellman᾽s test. Docking studies were also performed to investigate the binding mode and determine the interacting amino acids with the corresponding ligands. Finally, the pharmacokinetic (ADME parameters) of the most potent derivative (5d) was predicted and compared with donepezil. Findings/Results Compound 5d possessing the fluorine atom substitution at position ortho was the most active compound in these series (IC50 = 13 ± 2.1 nM). This compound demonstrated superior activity than the reference drug donepezil (IC50 = 0.6 ± 0.05 µM). Molecular docking showed a significant hydrogen bonding of the carbonyl group of compounds 5d with tyrosine 121 into the active site of acetylcholinesterase. Fortunately, this compound showed better promising ADME properties than donepezil. Conclusion and implication The benzamide derivatives introduced in this paper could be proposed as potential anti-acetylcholinesterase.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Mental health concerns among youth represent a critical global public health issue. Research has found that youth with mental health concerns are often reliant on their caregivers while being isolated from peers. Guided by the recovery model of mental health care, this study investigates the often-overlooked role of caregivers in fostering 'connectedness' in youth; Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine caregivers of youth with mental health issue; Results: Thematic analysis underscored three tasks in the role of caregivers in promoting connectedness in youth: (a) understanding the nature and quality of social networks, (b) supporting readiness to engage in social relationships, and (c) promoting their youth's social problem solving and self-efficacy; Discussion: These tasks highlight the complex dialectics faced by caregivers in supporting youth recovery. The findings hold key implications for developing interventions, resources and policies designed for caregivers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevention of pediatric mental health disorders is a growing health priority in the United States. While exposure to green space, such as outdoor vegetation, has been linked with improved mental health outcomes in children, little is known about the impact of green space on children's sleep. Sleep has many benefits, but the factors affecting both sleep and mental health as they relate to green space exposure are not well understood in children. This study aims to investigate how green space can affect sleep in children and contribute to the promotion of mental health and wellbeing. METHODS Project Green Space, Sleep, and Mental Health (G-SPACE) aims to recruit 250 elementary school-children from first, second, and third grade in Rhode Island to examine the influence of green space exposure on sleep, physical activity, and mental health over a five-year period. Objective measures of sleep, physical activity, and daily activity space will be assessed using an actigraph and a GPS (Global Positioning System) unit. Subjective measures of sleep duration, sleep quality, and mental health will be assessed using daily sleep diaries from parents, in addition to a range of survey items, including PROMIS® (Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System) pediatric scales, and the Children's Sleep Habits questionnaire, among others. Green space exposure will be based on measures of green space from the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) aligned with the daily activity trajectory of children. Additionally, saliva and DNA samples will be collected to examine epigenetic mechanisms linking green space to sleep and mental health. A subset of participants (n = 50) will be followed longitudinally to evaluate the long-term impact of green space on sleep and mental health among children. Multi-level models will be used to assess the association between green space exposure, sleep behaviors, and mental health. DISCUSSION Project G-SPACE will evaluate whether green space utilization influences sleep and mental health in early elementary school children, and the possible mechanistic pathways through which these associations emerge.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Schools play an essential role in providing mental health care for adolescents. School closures during COVID-19, as well as re-opening to remote-only instruction in Fall 2020, may indirectly affect the utilization of emergency psychiatric care. We examine COVID-19-related changes in emergency psychiatric care among youth during the school closure and after school reopening (with remote instruction). METHODS We use Box-Jenkins interrupted time series methods to analyze psychiatric emergency department (ED) visits among patients 10-19 years at LAC + USC Medical Center (LAC + USC) between January 5th, 2018, and December 31st, 2020. We control for the 1st societal shutdown in LA County (i.e., the nine weeks from March 13 to May 14, 2020) when analyzing the potential "return to remote school" shock. RESULTS Youth psychiatric ED visits fell by 15.3 per week during the Spring 2020 school closure (p < .05). The "return to remote school" coefficient (i.e., August 14th to September 10, 2020), by contrast, is positive but does not reach statistical detection above expected values (p = .11). However, the proportion of psychiatric ED visits rises 38% among youth during the "return to remote school" period (p = 0.006). CONCLUSION The initiation of Fall 2020 remote instruction corresponded with a greater proportion of youth ED visits that are classified as psychiatric.

Abstract
Childhood neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and Tourette syndrome, are a predominant cause of health-related disabilities in children and adolescents. Nevertheless, disease biomarkers are still limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential, causal relationship between mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN), metabolic disorders, and childhood NDDs using the two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) method. Genetic associations with mtDNA-CN, disorders of lipoprotein metabolism, and disorders of iron metabolism were selected as exposures, and genome-wide association data from ASD, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and Tourette syndrome were utilized as outcomes. Results of the study suggested that a high degree of disordered lipoprotein metabolism related increases in ASD risk result from a decrease in mtDNA-CN (disordered lipoprotein metabolism-mtDNA: inverse variance weighting β: -0.03, 95% confidence interval: -0.05 to -0.02, P = 2.08 × 10-5; mtDNA-CN-ASD: inverse variance weighting odds ratio: 0.83, 95% confidence interval: 0.69-0.99, P = .034). The research findings implied that mtDNA-CN can mediate disorders of lipoprotein metabolism, potentially influencing the development of ASD. The potential impact of the results of this study for the prevention and treatment of childhood NDDs warrants validation in robust randomized clinical trials.

Abstract
The mental health needs of young people in sub-Saharan African societies remain understudied. This study builds upon the everyday perspectives of young people in Gorongosa, a rural district in central Mozambique, to determine the frequency and severity of key mental health issues, identify significant risk and protective factors, and their associations with demographic factors and mental health predictors. This cross-sectional study gathered culturally and ecologically relevant variables, such as sociodemographic indicators and risk and protective factors. The Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ) and Nocturnal Intrusions after Traumatic Experiences Questionnaire (NITE) were used to determine the prevalence and severity of key mental health issues. A convenience sampling was used involving n = 794 young people of those (45.8%) were females and the mean age of all participants was 17.24 years (SD 2.9). To examine the results, univariate analysis, chi-square tests, binary logistic regression analyses and odds ratio were used. Risk factors were pervasive in households, communities, and schools. Mental health problems were commonly linked to severe depression (14.2%), anxiety-related disorders (39.3%), sleep disturbances (37.3%), and anxiety dreams (27.5%). Gender, age, and protective factors were associated with the frequency and severity of mental health outcomes, while living with both parents protected against the severity of anxiety-related disorders. Understanding the contextual mental health needs of young people in rural Mozambique is crucial for developing insights to craft and implement targeted public mental health interventions in resource-limited settings. Addressing mental health issues among young people necessitates a concentrated effort on understanding and managing the interplay of risks and protective factors within families, communities, and schools.

Abstract
Children's mental health status (MHS) is frequently influenced by their primary carers (PCs), underscoring the significance of monitoring disparities longitudinally. This research investigated the association between socio-demographic clusters and mental health trajectories among children and their PCs over time. Data from waves 6-9c2 of the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) were analyzed using Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to identify four socio-demographic classes among children aged 10-11 years at wave 6. Multinomial logistic regression and predictive marginal analysis explored associations between classes and mental health outcomes. PCs in Class 4 (disadvantaged and separated families with indigenous children) exhibited higher odds of borderline and abnormal MHS compared to Class 1 (prosperous and stable working families) across all waves. However, while MHS of PCs' impacted children consistently, the association with socio-demographic classes was significant only in wave 6. Class 4 children had elevated risks of mental illness compared to Class 1, while Class 3, characterized by educated working mothers, had lower risks. Reducing mental health risks entails addressing socio-economic disparities, supporting stable family structures, and offering tailored interventions like counseling and co-parenting support. Longitudinal monitoring and culturally sensitive approaches are crucial for promoting mental well-being across diverse groups.

Abstract
Many youths with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience significant long-term impairment and may develop concurrent mental and somatic health difficulties as adults. This is associated with burden and costs for the individual and society which could be prevented through continued support in youth. Yet, only few young people transition to adult mental health services for ongoing care in different countries worldwide. We provide an overview on current transition practices, highlighting the gaps in knowledge and the barriers to effective service transitioning, while considering the large geographical variation in available guidelines and service provision. For ease of use, this review is organized in a question-and-answer format covering different aspects of the transition process and considering both service users' and clinicians' perspectives. Consensus is needed to identify those that require continued care, the optimal timing to arrange transition, and the most suitable services. Finally, we discuss cost-effectiveness of transition practices, consider examples of best practice, and propose recommendations on how to improve transitional care, including the importance of service users' input into transition planning.

Abstract
Objective: The development and evaluation of the Professor Hippo-on-Campus Student Mental Health Education Program, a mental health literacy intervention for post-secondary faculty and staff, is described. It includes 3-hour virtual, asynchronous e-modules and an optional 2-hour, synchronous workshop. Participants: All faculty and staff in a single university were invited to participate (February 2020-January 2021). Methods: Pre-and post-module and post-workshop surveys were conducted, assessing knowledge, attitudes, stigma, behavioral intentions, and confidence. Paired t-tests and regressions assessed change. Satisfaction was assessed through closed and open-ended questions, analyzed descriptively and through qualitative content analysis. Results: Four hundred and fifty staff and faculty completed the pre-survey, 262 completed the post-survey, and 122 completed a workshop survey. Participation resulted in improvements in knowledge, attitudes, stigma, and confidence with high levels of satisfaction. Conclusion: The program provides tailored student mental health training to post-secondary staff and faculty, which appears to increase their mental health literacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-harm in children and young people is increasing. Parents are vital in supporting young people; however, parents may experience distress linked to the self-harm. Previous reviews have highlighted the emotional impact and need for information and support, however, have not elucidated the relationships between these themes, nor examined the quantitative data examining parents' well-being. METHODS We conducted a mixed methods review, with qualitative meta-synthesis focusing on links between themes and quantitative synthesis of parental well-being findings, including pooled means. PsycInfo, Medline, EMBASE, AMED, CINHAL and Web of Science were searched to identify relevant records. References of included studies were also searched. Every abstract was screened by two authors. Data were extracted by one author and checked by another. RESULTS We identified 39 reports of 32 studies: 16 with qualitative data and 17 with quantitative data (one had both). Qualitative findings showed how parents' emotions were associated to their knowledge and beliefs about self-harm. Parents' emotions often evidenced the need to self-care, but emotions of guilt reduced engagement in self-care. How parents supported their young person was linked to their knowledge, and the management of their own emotions, and influenced if they could engage in self-care. Quantitative findings were mixed, however suggested poor general mental health amongst these parents. CONCLUSIONS Further good quality quantitative studies are needed, with measurement of psychological mechanisms that may underpin parental distress. Current evidence supports peer-support and interventions that go beyond information provision to address the connected factors of knowledge, emotion, self-care, and parenting behaviours.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Suicide and suicidal behaviour strongly contribute to overall male youth mortality. An understanding of worldwide data contextualises suicide and suicidal behaviour in young men within any given country. METHOD Members and colleagues of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry's Task Force on Men's Mental Health review the relevant data from several regions of the world. The review identifies notable findings across regions of relevance to researchers, policymakers, and clinicians. RESULTS Male suicide and suicidal behaviour in adolescence and emerging adulthood within North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, Continental Africa, South Asia, East Asia, China, and Oceania share similarities as well as significant points of divergence. CONCLUSIONS International data provide an opportunity to obtain a superior understanding of suicide and suicidal behaviour amongst young men.

Abstract
AIMS There is increasing concern over the mental distress of youth in recent years, which may impact mental healthcare utilisation. Here we aim to examine temporal patterns of mental healthcare expenditures in the Netherlands by age and sex in the period between 2015 and 2021. METHODS Comprehensive data from health insurers in the Netherlands at the 3-number postal code level were used for cluster weighted linear regressions to examine temporal patterns of mental healthcare expenditure by age group (18-34 vs 35-65). The same was done for medical specialist and general practitioner costs. Additionally, we examined interactions with gender, by adding the interaction between age, year and sex to the model. RESULTS Mental healthcare costs for younger adults (18-34) were higher than those for older adults (35-65) at all time points (β = 0.22, 95%-CI = 0.19; 0.25). Furthermore there was an increase in the strength of the association between younger age and mental healthcare costs from β = 0.22 (95%-CI = 0.19; 0.25) in 2015 to β = 0.37 (95%-CI = 0.35; 0.40) in 2021 (p < 0.0001) and this was most evident in women (p < 0.0001). Younger age was associated with lower general practitioner costs at all time points, but this association weakened over time. Younger age was also associated with lower medical specialist costs, which did not weaken over time. CONCLUSIONS Young adults, particularly young women, account for an increasing share of mental healthcare expenditure in the Netherlands. This suggests that mental distress in young people is increasingly met by a response from the medical system. To mitigate this trend a public mental health approach is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, mental health challenges are common among school-going adolescents, with a prevalence of 50.2% and 43.6% for depression and anxiety disorders, respectively. In Northeastern Uganda, a prevalence of 26.6% and 8.6% for anxiety and depressive disorders respectively were reported among children. School-going adolescents are at higher risk of developing these mental health challenges and this could be worsened by natural disasters like landslides. We aimed to determine the prevalence and factors contributing to mental health challenges (having at least one of following; depression, anxiety, anger, disruptive behaviour and social concept) among school adolescents in the Manafwa Watershed area. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study in 3 districts of the Manafwa watershed area (Bududa, Manafwa, and Butaleja). We selected school-going adolescents aged 13-18 years because of the nature of study tools. Mental health challenges (anxiety, depression, anger, disruptive behaviour and self-concept) were assessed using the Beck Youth Inventory-II. Descriptive statistics and inferential analysis were performed to determine factors associated with mental health challenges. RESULTS A total of 762 adolescents participated, with a median age of 17 years (interquartile range =16-17 years). More than half of the students were females. The prevalence of mental health challenges was 65% with a (confidence interval) = 54.0% - 75.0%; the majority 44% of the participants had anxiety, and 31% had disruptive behaviour. Families with more than five children [adjusted odds ratio = 1.18, 95% confidence interval= 1.08-1.29, p value = <0.001] and substance abuse [adjusted odds ratio = 1.20, 95% confidence interval= 1.15-1.24, p value <0.001] were significantly associated with mental health challenges. CONCLUSION The prevalence of mental health challenges among students was high with majority having anxiety and disruptive behaviour. Adolescents from families with more than five children and those with substance abuse were more likely to have mental health challenges. We therefore recommend that various stakeholders such as the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Education, design a curriculum that caters to the mental health needs of children. Family planning awareness, awareness on Government laws prohibiting alcohol and substance use, and parenting skills should be raised by the local leaders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescence is a critical period for the onset of mental health issues. In China, high school students face significant academic and social pressures, leading to high rates of mental health challenges. Gender differences in the manifestation of these symptoms have been observed, with boys and girls exhibiting distinct psychological profiles. OBJECTIVE This study aims to explore the structure of psychological symptoms among Chinese high school students using network analysis, focusing on identifying core symptoms and gender differences in symptom networks. The key objectives are to: 1) identify the central psychological symptoms for boys and girls, and 2) uncover the interactions between symptoms to inform targeted interventions. METHODS A cluster sampling method was used to recruit 3,769 high school students (2,206 males and 1,563 females) in Shanghai. The Middle School Students Mental Health Scale (MSSMHS) was administered, and network analysis was conducted using the R packages bootnet and qgraph to assess symptom network edges, centrality, and network strength. Comparisons between male and female networks were made. RESULTS Network analysis showed tightly connected symptom networks for both genders, with 43 non-zero edges for boys (sparsity 0.04) and 39 for girls (sparsity 0.13). Depression was the core symptom for boys (centrality 1.20), while anxiety was central for girls (centrality 1.46). Boys showed a stronger link between interpersonal sensitivity and depression (edge value 0.20), while girls exhibited a stronger connection between anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (edge value 0.16). Network comparison tests revealed no significant differences in overall network strength between boys (4.625) and girls (4.660), with P-values greater than 0.05 across all comparisons. CONCLUSION This study highlights significant gender differences in the psychological symptom networks of Chinese high school students. Depression and anxiety emerged as core symptoms for boys and girls, respectively. These findings provide a foundation for developing gender-sensitive mental health interventions, emphasizing the need for tailored approaches based on gender-specific symptom profiles.
