Abstract
Nutrient pattern analysis is an easy way to compare nutrient intakes across different nations due to the universality of nutrients nature. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dietary nutrient patterns (NPs) and circulating 25(OH)D concentrations with sleep duration and sleep quality among Iranian adults. We used a multistage cluster random sampling method to enroll 535 adults in this cross-sectional investigation. A validated food frequency questionnaire was applied to evaluate typical dietary intakes. Fasting blood samples were obtained to determine levels of circulating 25(OH)D. Sleep characteristics were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Participants had a mean age of 42.57 years and 51.2% of them had insufficient or deficient levels of serum vitamin D. Three NPs were identified: "high animal protein", "high vegetable" and "high carbohydrate". After adjustments for potential confounders, no significant associations were observed between "high animal protein" pattern and short sleeping or sleep quality. Greater adherence to "high vegetable" NP was associated with lower odds of short sleeping (OR 0.24; 95% CI 0.10, 0.54) and poor sleep quality (OR 0.45; 95% CI 0.20, 1.05). Stratified analysis revealed that these associations were stronger in normal-weight participants. Greater adherence to "high carbohydrate" NP, on the other hand, was connected to higher odds of short sleeping (OR 2.83; 95% CI 1.20, 6.72). Low adherence to "high vegetable" pattern and vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency were jointly associated with increased odds of short sleeping (OR 3.42, 95% CI 1.42, 6.64). High adherence to pattern comprising mainly of vegetable nutrients was associated with a reduced likelihood of being short sleepers and having poor sleep quality in Iranian adults, especially among those with a normal weight. Lower adherence to vegetable NP and insufficient/deficient vitamin D levels were synergistically associated with greater likelihood of being short sleepers. Greater adherence to carbohydrate NP was associated with an increased likelihood of short sleeping.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The decline in sleep quality is one of the main public health problems affecting the global population. Some studies have shown that a high-fat diet may be linked to changes in circadian rhythm and sleep quality. The cholesterol/saturated fatty acid index (CSI) determines the amount of cholesterol and saturated fatty acid (SFA) in people's dietary patterns and can affect the quality of sleep and circadian rhythm. However, to date, no studies have investigated the effect of this index on these two variables. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the relationship between CSI on circadian rhythm and sleep quality in obese and overweight women. METHOD This cross-sectional study included 378 adult women who were obese or overweight. Using accepted techniques, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure readings, and biochemical variables were evaluated. A validated and trustworthy semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ 147 items) was used to gauge dietary intake. The CSI was measured to find out how much cholesterol and saturated fats were in the diet. Additionally, to assess circadian rhythm and sleep quality, respectively, the valid morning-evening questionnaire (MEQ) and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) questionnaires were utilized. RESULT The results of the multinomial logistic regression model of our analysis showed that a significant association was observed between circadian rhythm status with CSI score, and participants with one higher unit of CSI had a 7.3% more chance of being in the eveningness group than being in morningness category in the crude model (OR: 1.07; 95% CI 1.00, 1.14; P = 0.026). This association remains marginally significant when adjusting for age, energy intake, BMI, job status, thyroid, and smoking status (OR = 1.08; 95% CI 1.00, 1.16; P = 0.051). The binary logistic regression model showed that after controlling for potentially confounding variables, there was no significant association between sleep quality with CSI score, however, those with one higher unit of CSI had 1.6% more chance of having sleep problems (OR: 1.01; 95% CI 0.96, 1.06; P = 0.503). CONCLUSION Our results indicated a direct marginally significant association between CSI with evening type in overweight and obese women. Future studies are needed to clarify the precise link between circadian rhythm and sleep behavior with fatty acid quality index.

Abstract
Background Poor sleep quality is a common issue among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who undergo dialysis. Nutritional habits are associated with sleep hygiene in patients undergoing dialysis. The objective of this study was to examine the potential correlation between nutritional status and sleep quality in individuals receiving hemodialysis treatment. Materials and Methods This cross-sectional study included 160 hemodialysis patients. A food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to measure food intake in participants. The Persian-validated version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. Patients were classified as poor or good sleepers with a PSQI score of <5 and >5, respectively. Results Eighty-four percent of hemodialysis patients had bad sleep hygiene. There was a significant association between sleep quality and educational status and age (P < 0.001). Poor sleepers were older (61.65 years versus 51.12) and less educated (31.1% versus 4%). However, there was no significant difference in the intake of micro- and macronutrients between poor and good sleepers (P > 0.05). Conclusion The results of this study suggest that sleep quality has no significant relationship with nutrient intake in hemodialysis patients. Demographic factors, such as age and educational status, have played a more effective role than nutritional factors in patients' sleep quality.

Abstract
Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are increasingly common worldwide. While these disorders have increased in prevalence over the past several decades, there has been a concomitant reduction in sleep duration. Short sleep duration has been associated with higher rates of obesity and T2D, and the causality of these associations and their directionality, continue to necessitate evaluation. In this review we consider the evidence that sleep is an intrinsic factor in the development of obesity and chronic metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance and T2D, while evaluating a potential bi-directional association. We consider the evidence that diet and meal composition, which are known to impact glycemic control, may have both chronic and acute impact upon sleep. Moreover, we consider that postprandial nocturnal metabolism and peripheral glycemia may affect sleep quality. We propose putative mechanisms whereby acute effects of nighttime glucose excursions may lead to increased sleep fragmentation. We conclude that dietary manipulations, particularly with respect to carbohydrate quality, may confer sleep benefits. Future research may seek to evaluate the effectiveness of synergistic nutrient strategies to promote sleep quality, with particular attention to carbohydrate quality, quantity, and availability as well as carbohydrate to protein ratio.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the association between a vegetarian diet and sleep quality among Chinese healthy adults and explore potential contributing factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 280 vegetarians and 280 age- and sex-matched omnivores from Shanghai, China. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Central Depression Scale (CES-D) were used to assess sleep and depression condition, respectively. A validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires (SQFFQ) was employed to assess dietary intakes, and body composition was measured with InBody720. Multi-linear regression and logistic regression analysis were performed for the data analysis. The sleep quality was significantly better in the vegetarians than in the omnivores (PSQI score: 2.80 ± 2.02 vs. 3.27 ± 1.90, p = 0.005). The proportion of vegetarians who reported self-satisfied sleep was also higher than that of the omnivores (84.6% vs. 76.1%, p = 0.011). However, after adjusted for the depression condition (CES-D scores), the difference in sleep quality between vegetarians and omnivores became insignificant (p = 0.053). Compared to omnivores, vegetarians had lower depression scores (CES-D: 9.37 ± 6.24 vs. 10.94 ± 7.00, p = 0.006). After controlling for confounding factors, there was positive association between depression condition and sleep quality (β = 0.106, 95%CI: 0.083 to 0.129, p < 0.001). Similarly, participants with better CES-D score had a lower risk of sleep disorders after controlling for the same confounding factors (OR = 1.109, 95%CI: 1.072 to 1.147, p < 0.001). Different contributing factors were reported in the vegetarian group and omnivore group. In conclusion, a vegetarian diet might improve sleep quality by moderating mental health, particularly depression condition.

Abstract
AIMS Sleep is a fundamental physiological function and is essential for all animals. Sleep is affected by diet compositions including protein (P) and carbohydrates (C), but there has not been a systematic investigation on the effect of dietary macronutrient balance on sleep. MAIN METHODS We used the nutritional geometry framework (NGF) to explore the interactive effects on sleep of protein (P) and carbohydrates (C) in the model organism Drosophila. Both female and male flies were fed various diets containing seven ratios of protein-to-carbohydrates at different energetic levels for 5 days and sleep was monitored by the Drosophila Activity Monitor (DAM) system. KEY FINDINGS Our results showed that the combination of low protein and high carbohydrates (LPHC) prolonged sleep time and sleep quality, with fewer sleep episodes and longer sleep duration. We further found that the effects of macronutrients on sleep mirrored levels of hemolymph glucose and whole-body glycogen. Moreover, transcriptomic analyses revealed that a high-protein, low-carbohydrate (HPLC) diet significantly elevated the gene expression of metabolic pathways when compared to the LPHC diet, with the glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism pathway being most strongly elevated. Further studies confirmed that the contents of glycine, serine, and threonine affected sleep. SIGNIFICANCE Our results demonstrate that sleep is affected by the dietary balance of protein and carbohydrates possibly mediated by the change in glucose, glycogen, glycine, serine, and threonine.

Abstract
CONTEXT Poor sleep is increasingly seen as an issue of public health concern. In recent years, there has been growing interest in protein as a route to improve sleep outcomes; however, the evidence is limited and inconclusive. OBJECTIVE To examine, using a systematic review and meta-analysis, the effect of increased protein intake (≥1 g/kg//d, ≥25% of total energy intake, or protein supplementation of ≥10 g/d/) on sleep outcomes in adults. METHODS On November 30, 2021, 5 electronic databases were searched to identify relevant randomized controlled trials (PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Web of Science, and CINAHL Plus). Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk-of-Bias tool, version 2.0. DATA EXTRACTION Five sleep outcomes were included in this systematic review (sleep quality [SQ], sleep latency [SL], sleep efficiency [SEff], sleep time [ST], wake episodes, and other sleep outcomes) and 4 in the meta-analysis (SQ, SL, SEff, and ST). The quality of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach. DATA ANALYSIS Twelve intervention studies reported on in 10 articles were included. The qualitative analyses showed that increased protein consumption has little influence on sleep outcomes. Only subjective SQ was positively associated with protein consumption in a few studies. Meta-analyses also showed no significant effect of increased protein intake on sleep outcomes (number of studies for SQ, ST, SL, and SEff: 8, 8, 7, and 6, respectively), with very low certainty of evidence. However, results from sensitivity analyses, excluding high-risk studies, suggest a small effect on SQ in favor of high protein intake (mean difference, -4.28; 95%CI, -7.77, -0.79; on a scale from 0 to 100). CONCLUSION This systematic review and meta-analysis indicate there is no clear relationship between increased protein intake and sleep. However, the strength of the evidence is low and more randomized controlled trials that focus on this specific research question are warranted. This study aimed to determine the short-term effect of two isocaloric diets differing in the ratio of protein−carbohydrate on melatonin levels, sleep, and subsequent dietary intake and physical activity in healthy young men. Twenty-four healthy men took part in a crossover design including two sessions of three days on isocaloric diets whether high-protein, low-carbohydrate (HPLC) or low-protein, high-carbohydrate (LPHC) followed by 24-h free living assessments. Sleep was measured by ambulatory polysomnography pre-post-intervention. Melatonin levels were assessed on the third night of each session on eight-point salivary sampling. Physical activity was monitored by accelerometry. On day 4, participants reported their 24-h ad-libitum dietary intake. LPHC resulted in better sleep quality and increased secretion of melatonin compared to HPLC. A significant difference was noted in sleep efficiency (p < 0.05) between the two sessions. This was mainly explained by a difference in sleep onset latency (p < 0.01) which was decreased during LPHC (PRE: 15.8 ± 7.8 min, POST: 11.4 ± 4.5 min, p < 0.001). Differences were also noted in sleep staging including time spent on REM (p < 0.05) and N1 (p < 0.05). More importantly, REM latency (PRE: 97.2 ± 19.9 min, POST 112.0 ± 20.7 min, p < 0.001) and cortical arousals (PRE: 7.2 ± 3.9 event/h, POST 8.5 ± 3.3 event/h) increased in response to HPLC diet but not LPHC. On day 4, 24-h ad-libitum energy intake was higher following HPLC compared to LPHC (+64 kcal, p < 0.05) and explained by increased snacking behavior (p < 0.01) especially from carbohydrates (p < 0.05). Increased carbohydrates intake was associated with increased cortical arousals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We sought to systematically review the association between meal glycemic index or glycemic load and sleep indicators. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase were searched up to March 2021. Both observational and clinical trials studies, with both male and female participants of all ages, were included. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS A total of 10 studies were included in this review; six with clinical trial and four with cross-sectional design. Among the six clinical trial, three studies indicated a significant effect of high glycemic index on sleep (two in young male athletes [N.=8 and N.=9] and one in adults [N.=8]), while three others failed to detect any significant effect (young males [N.=12], children [N.=8], toddlers [N.=56]). Among the cross-sectional studies, high glycemic index meals were associated with improved sleep duration or quality in two studies (594 toddlers and 1848 adults), however, contrastingly, were also associated with sleep disturbances (108 students and 53,069 postmenopausal women). CONCLUSIONS High glycemic index meals likely improve sleep onset latency in young males. For other indicators of sleep quality and other population groups, the results are equivocal. Most of the available studies were conducted in special population groups and were inadequately designed; whilst clinical trials were of short duration and small sample sizes. Therefore, further well-designed clinical trials are required before further definitive conclusions can be made.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study aimed to quantify the level of sleep problems in 5835 breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer survivors, and explore a number of potential determinants of poor sleep quality in the present sample. BMI, diet, and physical activity were of particular interest as potential determinants. METHODS Participants who completed the 'Health and Lifestyle after Cancer' survey were adults who had been diagnosed with breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer (mean time since cancer diagnosis was 35.5 months, SD=13.56). Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. BMI was calculated from self-reported height and weight. Participants were categorised as meeting/not meeting the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) recommendations for fibre, fruit and vegetables, added sugar, red meat, processed meat, fat, alcohol, and physical activity. Analyses accounted for demographic and clinical factors. RESULTS Fifty-seven percent of those with sleep data were classified as poor sleepers (response rate 79%). Being female, having a higher number of cancer treatments, more comorbid conditions, and being more anxious/depressed increased the odds of being a poor sleeper. After adjustment for these factors, there were no associations between diet/alcohol/physical activity and sleep. However, BMI was associated with sleep. Individuals in the overweight and obese categories had 22% and 79% higher odds of being poor sleepers than individuals in the underweight/healthy weight category, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that there may be a need to develop sleep quality interventions for cancer survivors with obesity. Even after adjustment for multiple clinical and demographic factors, BMI (particularly obesity) was associated with poor sleep. Thus, researchers and health professionals should find ways to support individuals with overweight and obesity to improve their sleep quality. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS The present findings highlight that poor sleep is a common issue in cancer survivors. Interventions seeking to improve outcomes for cancer survivors over the longer term should consider sleep quality.

Abstract
Sleep problems have become common among people today. Sleep disorders are closely associated with physiological and psychological diseases. Among the ways of improving objective or subjective sleep quality, controlling elements associated with food intake can be more efficient than other methods in terms of time and cost. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand the effects of nutrients and natural products on sleep. An extensive literature search was conducted, and related articles were identified through online databases, such as Elsevier, Google Scholar, PubMed, Springer, and Web of Science. Expert opinion, conference abstracts, unpublished studies, and studies published in languages other than English were excluded from this review. The effects of macronutrients and diet adjustment on sleep differed. Although not all nutrients independently affect sleep, they comprehensively affect it through tryptophan metabolism. Furthermore, natural foods related to GABA have an effect on sleep similar to that of sleeping pills. Taken together, our results suggest that humans can control both their objective and subjective sleep quality based on their lifestyle and food consumption. However, until now, direct studies on the relationship between human sleep and nutrition, such as clinical trials, have been insufficient. As both objective and subjective sleep quality are the factors determining the quality of life of individuals, further studies on those are needed to improve it.

Abstract
Sleep problems are extremely common in industrialized countries and the possibility that diet might be used to improve sleep has been considered. The topic has been reviewed many times, resulting in the frequent suggestion that carbohydrate increases the uptake of tryptophan by the brain, where it is metabolized into serotonin and melatonin, with the suggestion that this improves sleep. An alternative mechanism was proposed based on animal literature that has been largely ignored by those considering diet and sleep. The hypothesis was that, as in the hypothalamus there are glucose-sensing neurons associated with the sleep-wake cycle, we should consider the impact of carbohydrate-induced changes in the level of blood glucose. A meta-analysis found that after consuming a lower amount of carbohydrate, more time was spent in slow-wave sleep (SWS) and less in rapid-eye-movement sleep. As the credibility of alternative mechanisms has tended not to have been critically evaluated, they were considered by examining their biochemical, nutritional, and pharmacological plausibility. Although high carbohydrate consumption can increase the uptake of tryptophan by the brain, it only occurs with such low levels of protein that the mechanism is not relevant to a normal diet. After entering the brain tryptophan is converted to serotonin, a neurotransmitter known to influence so many different aspects of sleep and wakefulness, that it is not reasonable to expect a uniform improvement in sleep. Some serotonin is converted to melatonin, although the exogenous dose of melatonin needed to influence sleep cannot be credibly provided by the diet. Abstract
Background Previous studies has shown that a low quality diet is related to sleep disorders. A Mediterranean diet is considered to be a high quality diet and has been shown to have beneficial effects on overall health. Thus, the aim of our study was to investigate the association between adherence to Mediterranean dietary pattern and insomnia score among adolescent girls. Methods The data for 733 adolescent girls between 12–18 years old was assessed in this cross-sectional study. A 147 item-food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intake. A modified model of Mediterranean diet score was calculated that ranged from 0–9 points. A validated version of Insomnia Severity Index questionnaire was used to assess insomnia. To explore the association between modified Mediterranean (mMED) diet score and insomnia, linear regression was conducted in crude and adjusted models (energy intake adjustmet in Model I, further adjustments were performed for physical activity, father’s and mother’s education in Model II and full adjusted model adjusted for age, body mass index percentiles, and abdominal obesity). Results A significant inverse association between mMED diet score and insomnia score was observed using a crude model (β = -0.091, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.392 to -0.046); P-value = 0.013) and also after adjustment for confounding factors in Model I (β = -0.098, CI: -0.423 to -0.045; P = 0.015), Model II (β = -0.092, CI: -0.410 to -0.029; P-value = 0.024), Model III (β = -0.082, CI: -0.385 to -0.006); P = 0.044). Conclusion There was an inverse relationship between adherence to the mMED diet score and insomnia level among Iranian adolescent girls. Prospective studies are needed to confirm these results and clarify whether a causal relationship exists.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sleep is important for athlete health and performance; however, the relationship between diet and sleep in elite female athletes is not well understood. This study examined associations between energy, macronutrient and micronutrient intakes, and sleep in elite female Australian footballers. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. METHODS Thirty-two players had their diet and sleep monitored for 10 consecutive days during pre-season. Sleep was monitored using activity monitors and sleep diaries. Sleep outcomes included sleep duration, sleep onset latency (SOL), wake time after sleep onset (WASO), and sleep efficiency (SE). Dietary intake was monitored using the smartphone applications Easy Diet Diary and FoodWorks. Relationships between nutrient intake and sleep were assessed using Generalised Estimating Equations. RESULTS For each 1-g·kg-1 increase in carbohydrate intake, WASO increased by 3.6 min (p = 0.007) and SE decreased by 0.6% (p = 0.007). For each 1-g increase in daily saturated fat intake, SOL decreased by 0.27 min (p = 0.030). For each 1-mg increase in iron intake, sleep duration increased by 0.55 min (p < 0.001). For each 1-mg increase in zinc intake, SE increased by 0.23% (p = 0.006). For each 1-μg increase in vitamin B12 intake, WASO decreased by 1.72 min (p < 0.02) and SE increased by 0.40% (p = 0.033). CONCLUSIONS Nutrient intake in elite female athletes is associated with sleep and may contribute to sleep problems. Research should explore causal relationships between nutrient intake and sleep, and the efficacy of dietary interventions for improving sleep in female athletes with nutrient deficiencies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Patients with diabetes mellitus have a lower quality of life and sleep compared with healthy individuals. Nutrition therapy has an important role in the management of diabetes and can improve inflammation and quality of life in patients with diabetes. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of high-protein versus high-carbohydrate intake during evening meal on quality of life, sleep quality, inflammation, and oxidative stress in subjects with type 2 diabetes. SUBJECTS/METHODS This is a 10-week randomized controlled trial. 96 adult patients with type 2 diabetes were assigned into one of the following three groups: standard evening meal (ST), high-carbohydrate evening meal (HC), and high-protein evening meal (HP). The effect of these diets was examined on high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, malondialdehyde, quality of life, and sleep quality. RESULTS Sleep quality improved significantly in all groups (p < .05). The quality of life and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein improved in all groups except for the HP group (p < .05). Serum malondialdehyde level did not change significantly throughout the study (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS Small manipulation of protein and carbohydrate distribution among the meals might not affect sleep quality. A diet with an even distribution of macronutrients among the meals or with a higher percentage of carbohydrates in the evenings can improve the quality of life and reduce inflammation in patients with type 2 diabetes, while a diet with a higher percentage of protein in the evenings may not improve it.

Abstract
Sleep disorders are very often underestimated and, consequently, not treated with due priority. Common sleep disorders include insomnia disorders, sleep-related breathing disorders, central disorders of hypersomnolence, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, sleep-related movement disorders, parasomnias, and other sleep disorders. The ketogenic diet (KD) is rich in fat, low in carbohydrates (CHO), and adequate in protein. The KD has shown several applications in treating medical conditions, such as epilepsy, neurodegenerative disorders, obesity with its comorbidities, and sleep disorders, with encouraging results. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to address the primary sleep disorders and their respective standard therapeutic approaches, analyse the effect of ketone bodies (KBs) on sleep homeostasis, and the effects of KD on sleep disorders and in particular on obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) syndrome. The goal is to summarise the evidence existing up to now on the subject, to provide a starting point for further investigations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary pattern has been represented as a contributor to the duration and quality of sleep. This study aimed to review the evidence on this relation among children and adolescents. STUDY DESIGN This was a systematic review on the association of dietary pattern and sleep. METHODS A literature search was conducted for all articles published between 1980 and August 2020 using the terms "diet" AND "sleep" in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Embase databases. Screening and selection of eligible studies were performed by two separate investigators. Studies reporting the impact of different dietary patterns and indices on sleep duration or quality were included. RESULTS Fourteen publications (12 cross-sectional, 1 cohort, and 1 clinical trial) were identified. Findings from most studies suggested that long sleep duration was consistently associated with healthy dietary patterns, such as "Vegetables & Healthy Proteins", "Traditional", "Fruit & Vegetables", etc. Results were more mixed and inconclusive regarding the quality of sleep, with 2 studies supporting, 2 studies disapproving, and one study neutral about the association between better sleep quality and healthier dietary patterns. The association between diet and sleep seemed to be affected by confounders and covariates, including sex, physical activity, screen time, etc. CONCLUSIONS: Longer sleep duration appears to be associated with healthier dietary pattern. However, various results in regard to the relation between dietary patterns and sleep quality preclude definitive conclusions. Further research with standard measures of sleep quality and experimental study designs are needed to better define the causal relationship between sleep and diet.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To evaluate whether dietary patterns are associated with sleep quality in Mexican midlife women. METHODS The study population included 4,467 Mexican women from a longitudinal study of teachers. In 2008, a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire was administered. Principal components analysis identified 3 dietary patterns: Fruits and Vegetables, Western (meat and processed), and Modern Mexican (tortillas and soda, low in fiber and dairy). Starting in 2012, follow-up questionnaires included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, which yields a score ranging from 0 to 21 (higher scores = worse quality). Modified Poisson regression analyses examining the association between dietary patterns (categorized into quartiles) and poor sleep quality (score > 5) were conducted, adjusting for socio-demographic and lifestyle confounders and baseline comorbid conditions. RESULTS Women were 41.0 ± 7.1 years at baseline, with an average follow-up of 5.5 ± 0.7 years. In fully adjusted models, women in the least-healthy quartile of the Fruits and Vegetables pattern compared with the most were 21% more likely to have poor quality sleep at follow-up (95% confidence interval 1.06, 1.42), while those in the highest quartiles of the Modern Mexican pattern were 23% more likely to have poor quality sleep compared with the lowest quartiles (95% confidence interval 1.06 to 1.43, respectively). CONCLUSIONS A fruit and vegetable-based dietary pattern was associated with higher sleep quality, while an unhealthier diet pattern was associated with worse sleep quality in midlife women.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this systematic review was to characterise and synthesise the literature that explores the effects of macronutrient manipulation on sleep outcomes in order to provide dietary recommendations for sleep improvement. METHODS Intervention studies that evaluated the effects of macronutrient manipulations on sleep were identified using four databases. A study was included if it: (a) delivered a macronutrient-based dietary intervention, regardless of length; (b) included healthy human participants aged 18 and older; and (c) measured some aspect of sleep, for example, duration or quality, in some manner. RESULTS A total of 17 papers and 19 studies met the inclusion criteria. Included studies were organised into acute studies lasting less than 24 hours (n = 4), longer-term (≥24 hours) studies (n = 10), and energy restriction studies (n = 5). The greatest amount of support was observed for longer-term administration of higher carbohydrate diets. These interventions positively influenced rapid eye movement sleep; however, non-rapid eye movement sleep was negatively affected. The overall health outcomes of these changes are difficult to assess. Limited evidence suggests higher protein diets under conditions of energy restriction can improve sleep quality, but these effects might be restricted to individuals with overweight or obesity. Current evidence does not support the effects of acute macronutrient manipulation, defined as less than 24 hours, on sleep outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Manipulating carbohydrate intake for at least 24 hours appears to alter sleep outcomes among healthy individuals. Interventions were highly varied and methodological shortcomings were identified. More work is required to fully understand how macronutrient intake affects sleep outcomes.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the effects of quantity, quality and periodization of carbohydrates consumption on sleep. PubMed, SCOPUS and Cochrane Library were searched through October 2020. Data were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Eleven articles were included in the meta-analysis which consisted of 27 separate nutrition trials, resulting in 16 comparison data sets (sleep quantity n = 11; sleep quality n = 5). Compared to high carbohydrate (HCI), low carbohydrate intake (LCI) moderately increased duration and proportion of N3 sleep stage (ES = 0.37; 95% CI = 0.18, 0.56; p < 0.001 and ES = 0.51; 95% CI = 0.33, 0.69; p < 0.001, respectively). HCI prolonged rapid eye movement (REM) stage duration (ES = −0.38; 95% CI = 0.05, −8.05; p < 0.001) and proportion (ES = −0.46; 95% CI = −0.83, −0.01; p < 0.001), compared to LCI. The quality of carbohydrate intake did not affect sleep stages. Meta-regression showed that the effectiveness of carbohydrate quantity and quality in sleep onset latency was significantly explained by alterations of carbohydrate intake as a percentage of daily energy intake (R2 = 25.87, p = 0.018) and alterations in the glycemic load (R2 = 50.8, p = 0.048), respectively. Alterations in glycemic load partially explained the variance of the effectiveness of carbohydrate quality in sleep efficiency (R2 = 89.2, p < 0.001) and wake after sleep onset (R2 = 64.9, p = 0.018). Carbohydrate quantity was shown to affect sleep architecture, and especially N3 and REM sleep stages. Alterations in both quantity and quality of carbohydrate intake showed a significant effect on sleep initiation. Variations in carbohydrate quality significantly affected measures of sleep continuation. Further studies are needed to assess the effect of long-term carbohydrate interventions on sleep.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Poor sleep quality is a commonly seen problem in hemodialysis patients. This study investigated the associations between dietary factors and sleep quality among hemodialysis patients. DESIGN AND METHODS This is a cross-sectional study conducted among 184 eligible hemodialysis patients at four dialysis units in Malaysia. Three days dietary recall were used in the analysis of dietary intake and behavior. Sleep quality was assessed through Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. RESULTS More than half of the patients were poor sleepers. Among the sleep components, sleep latency affected patients the most, with the use of sleep medications was relatively low. A majority of the patients had inadequate dietary intake of energy (88%) and protein (75%). Dietary protein, potassium adjusted for body weight, and sodium intake were significantly increased in poor sleepers. Lower percentage of energy from carbohydrates; higher percentage of energy from fats; higher intakes of dietary protein, fat, phosphorus, and sodium were correlated with poorer sleep quality and its components. Skipping dinner on non-dialysis days and having supper on dialysis days were associated with poor sleep quality. CONCLUSION Poor sleep is prevalent among hemodialysis patients. Sleep quality of hemodialysis patients was highly associated with certain dietary factors. Periodical assessment of sleep quality and dietary intake is necessary to identify poor sleepers with inappropriate dietary intake to allow effective clinical and nutritional interventions to improve the sleep quality and nutritional status of these patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep quality and quantity often decline as people age, which may negatively impact health. We examined how nutrition is associated with self-reported sleep quality and quantity in oldest-old community-dwelling men. METHODS In this cross-sectional analysis of the Helsinki Businessmen Study (HBS), a random sample of 130 surviving participants underwent a clinical examination in 2017-2018. Food and nutrient intakes were retrieved from 3-day food diaries in 126 men, and sleep quality and quantity were determined with a questionnaire. Nutritional status was assessed using Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF), General Health and Vitality were measured with RAND-36/SF-36 health-related quality of life instrument, and albumin and creatinine levels were analyzed from fasting serum samples. RESULTS Mean age of the survivors was 87 years (range 83-99). Self-reported sleep quality and quantity were highly correlated (p < 0.001, η2 = 0.693). Nutritional status (MNA-SF) (p = 0.006, η2 = 0.076), vegetable intake (p = 0.030. η2 = 0.041) and vitality (p = 0.008, η2 = 0.101) were associated with better sleep quality and fish (p = 0.028, η2 = 0.051) intake was associated with longer sleep duration. This association remained after adjusting for age, sleep quality, carbohydrate energy %, and albumin levels. CONCLUSION Healthy nutrition may be an important contributor to sleep hygiene in oldest-old men.

Abstract
Background: Alternate day fasting combined with a low carbohydrate diet (ADF-LC) is an effective weight loss regimen. Whether the weight loss induced by ADF-LC can improve sleep, remains unknown. Objective: This study examined the effect an ADF-LC diet on sleep quality, duration, insomnia severity and the risk of obstructive sleep apnea. Methods: Adults with obesity (n = 31) participated in ADF (600 kcal “fast day”; ad libitum intake “feast day”) with a low-carbohydrate diet (30% carbohydrates, 35% protein, and 35% fat). The 6-month trial consisted of a 3-month weight loss period followed by a 3-month weight maintenance period. Results: Reductions in body weight (−5 ± 1 kg, p < 0.001) and fat mass (−4 ± 1 kg, p < 0.01) were noted during the weight loss period, and these reductions were sustained during the weight maintenance period. Lean mass and visceral fat remained unchanged. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score indicated poor sleep quality at baseline (6.4 ± 0.7) with no change by month 3 or 6, versus baseline. ISI score indicated subthreshold insomnia at baseline (8.5 ± 1.0), with no change by month 3 or 6, versus baseline. The percent of subjects with high risk of obstructive sleep apnea at baseline was 45%, with no change by month 3 or 6. Wake time, bedtime, and sleep duration remained unchanged. Conclusion: The ADF-LC diet does not impact sleep quality, duration, insomnia severity or the risk of obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.

Abstract
Sleep disturbances often result from inappropriate lifestyles, incorrect dietary habits, and/or digestive diseases. This clinical condition, however, has not been sufficiently explored in this area. Several studies have linked the circadian timing system to the physiology of metabolism control mechanisms, energy balance regulation, and nutrition. Sleep disturbances supposedly trigger digestive disorders or conversely represent specific clinical manifestation of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. Poor sleep may worsen the symptoms of GI disorders, affecting the quality of life. Conversely, short sleep may influence dietary choices, as well as meal timing, and the circadian system drives temporal changes in metabolic patterns. Emerging evidence suggests that patients with inappropriate dietary habits and chronic digestive disorders often sleep less and show lower sleep efficiency, compared with healthy individuals. Sleep disturbances may thus represent a primary symptom of digestive diseases. Further controlled trials are needed to fully understand the relationship between sleep disturbances, dietary habits, and GI disorders. It may be also anticipated that the evaluation of sleep quality may prove useful to drive positive interventions and improve the quality of life in a proportion of patients. This review summarizes data linking sleep disorders with diet and a series of disease including gastro-esophageal reflux disease, peptic disease, functional gastrointestinal disorders, inflammatory bowel diseases, gut microbiota alterations, liver and pancreatic diseases, and obesity. The evidence supporting the complex interplay between sleep dysfunction, nutrition, and digestive diseases is discussed.

Abstract
We examined the association of the dietary habits and the Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence with sleep quality during pregnancy. A food frequency questionnaire and the Mediterranean Food Pattern were employed to assess dietary habits and MD adherence, respectively. Sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global score (n = 150; mean age 32.9 ± 4.6 years). A higher consumption of fruits was associated with better sleep quality at the 16th gestational week (g.w.; p < 0.05). A greater olive oil consumption and a higher MD adherence were associated with better sleep quality at the 16th and 34th g.w. (all, p < 0.05). Contrarily, a higher red meat and subproducts consumption was associated with worse sleep quality at the 34th g.w. (p < 0.05). The group with the highest adherence to the MD (Tertile 3) showed better sleep quality than the group with the lowest adherence (Tertile 1) at the 16th and 34th g.w. (both, p < 0.05). A higher adherence to the MD, a greater intake of fruits and olive oil and a lower intake of red meat and subproducts were associated with better sleep quality along the pregnancy course, especially among sedentary women.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep and nutrition are central to an organism's continued physiological existence. Moreover, both of these functions include significant social-behavioral, educational, and cultural elements. This study examined the effects of two types of nocturnal dinners ("vegetarian" versus "meat") on the quality and quantity of sleep, as well as on subjective sleepiness and attention levels the following morning. MATERIALS AND METHODS 20 healthy subjects (10 men and 10 women) participated in a lab polysomnography study for two non-consecutive nights at the Sleep Institute at Tel-Hai College. They completed questionnaires (Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) and Brief Symptom Inventory Questionnaire (BSI)), as well as a computerized attention and concentration test (Conner's Continuous Performance Test-III (CPT-III)), on the mornings after each night of polysomnography. On the first night, subjects consumed a vegetarian meal made up of non-animal ingredients (vegetables and vegetable proteins). On the second night, they were given a meat meal composed of carbohydrates, fats, and animal proteins. RESULTS No significant differences were measured in the various sleep parameters: efficacy, structure, and quality of sleep. There were also no significant differences found in the behavioral measures examined: subjective sleepiness (KSS), mood (BSI), and attention and concentration abilities (CPT-III). CONCLUSION The findings of this study indicate that, contrary to popular belief, consuming a meat dinner may not affect a person's quality of sleep, or their ability to function the morning after, differently than a vegetarian dinner. Future studies should further examine the relationship between sleep and nutrition. TRIAL REGISTRATION The clinical trial is registered under the number 0010-18ASMC.

Abstract
Many processes are involved in sleep regulation, including the ingestion of nutrients, suggesting a link between diet and sleep. Aside from studies investigating the effects of tryptophan, previous research on sleep and diet has primarily focused on the effects of sleep deprivation or sleep restriction on diet. Furthermore, previous reviews have included subjects with clinically diagnosed sleep-related disorders. The current narrative review aimed to clarify findings on sleep-promoting foods and outline the effects of diet on sleep in otherwise healthy adults. A search was undertaken in August 2019 from the Cochrane, MEDLINE (PubMed), and CINAHL databases using the population, intervention, control, outcome (PICO) method. Eligible studies were classified based on emerging themes and reviewed using narrative synthesis. Four themes emerged: tryptophan consumption and tryptophan depletion, dietary supplements, food items, and macronutrients. High carbohydrate diets, and foods containing tryptophan, melatonin, and phytonutrients (e.g., cherries), were linked to improved sleep outcomes. The authors posit that these effects may be due in part to dietary influences on serotonin and melatonin activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent research has demonstrated an association between dietary intake and sleep health that can influence chronic disease risk factors. A scoping review of research studies investigating dietary intake and sleep was undertaken to determine the extent and scope of research in laboratory-based, free-living and mixed settings. Additionally, this review determines how well subpopulations and geographical locations are represented and the methodologies used to assess outcome measures. METHODS Five online databases were used to identify papers published between 1970 and 2017. Included studies were those conducted in adults and reported both outcomes of interest: (i) sleep health, including sleep restriction and sleep hygiene and (ii) dietary outcomes, including altered nutrients, dietary patterns and supplements. RESULTS In total, 129 publications were included with the majority being dietary interventions investigating sleep outcomes (n = 109) with fewer being sleep interventions investigating and reporting dietary outcomes (n = 20). Dietary interventions were most often carried out in free-living environments, in contrast to sleep interventions that were most often carried out in laboratory-based environments. The majority of dietary interventions investigated use of a supplement (n = 66 studies), which was predominantly caffeine (n = 49). Sleep interventions investigated sleep duration only, with the majority (n = 17) investigating the effect of partial sleep restriction under 5.5 h per night on dietary intake, while three studies investigating total sleep deprivation. CONCLUSIONS Investigating broader aspects of dietary such as overall diet quality and dietary patterns and other components of sleep health such as quality, timing and sleep hygiene are important aspects for future research.

Abstract
Sleep is involved in metabolic, emotional and cognitive regulation and is therefore an essential part of our health. Although an association between sleep quality and macronutrient intake has been reported, studies on the effect of macronutrient distribution with sleep quality are limited, and available results are inconsistent. In this study, we aim to assess the association between sleep quality and macronutrient distribution in healthy adults from systematically reviewed cross-sectional studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). A total of 19 relevant articles were selected and it was observed that good sleepers (sleep duration ≥ 7 h, global sleep score ≤ 5, sleep latency ≤ 30 min and sleep efficiency >85%) had a higher energy distribution from dietary protein than poor sleepers. On the other hand, good sleepers showed a relatively lower percentage of energy from dietary carbohydrate and fat than poor sleepers. However, meta-regression analysis revealed no dose-dependent association between the macronutrient distributions and sleep duration. These results suggest that consuming a greater proportion of dietary protein may benefit on improving sleep quality in healthy adults. However, findings may be susceptible to reverse causality and additional RCTs are needed.

Abstract
There is increasing evidence that diet can mitigate fatigue. The objective of this study was to assess the associations between dietary habits and sleep-related impairment (SRI) in a cohort of community physicians. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from 245 physicians who had completed a wellness survey in March 2016 (98% response rate). Three dietary patterns were derived using principal component analysis: plant based, high protein, and high saturated fat and sugar. In the adjusted analysis, every SD increase in the plant-based dietary pattern score was associated with a 0.71-point decrease (β = -0.72; SE = 0.32; P = .027; 95% CI = -1.35 to -0.08) in the SRI score, and every SD increase in the high saturated fat and sugar dietary pattern score was associated with a 0.77-point increase (β = 0.77; SE = 0.32; P = .015; 95% CI = 0.15 to 1.39) in the SRI score. There were no associations between high protein diets and SRI scores. Physicians adhering to diets that are high in plant-based foods and low in saturated fat and added sugars had less SRI. Physicians currently face significant barriers to maintaining a healthy diet. This study highlights the potential role of workplace nutrition on SRI and work performance of physicians.

Abstract
Dietary proteins are sources of some amino acid precursors of two neurotransmitters relevant for biological rhythms, serotonin and melatonin, which are involved in sleep and alertness. Meat is the main source of proteins in many countries. Furthermore, meat consumption is of special interest because it provides high-quality protein as well as saturated and trans fatty acids. However, its effect on sleep patterns is unclear. Thereby, the aim was to examine the association of habitual meat consumption with changes in sleep duration and with sleep quality in older adults. We used data from 1,341 participants in the Seniors-ENRICA cohort aged ≥60 years, followed from 2012 through 2015. Habitual meat consumption was assessed at baseline with a validated diet history. Sleep duration and quality were ascertained both in 2012 and 2015. Analyses were performed with logistic regression and adjusted for socio-demographic variables, lifestyle, morbidity, sleep duration and poor sleep indicators at baseline. During follow-up, 9.0% of individuals increased and 7.9% decreased their sleep duration by ≥2 hours/night. Compared with individuals in the lowest tertile of meat consumption (<87 g/d), those in the highest tertile (≥128 g/d) showed increased incidence of a large decrease (≥2 h) in sleep duration (OR: 1.93; 95% CI:1.01-3.72; p-trend:0.04). Higher consumption of meat was also associated with incidence of snoring (OR:2.06; 95% CI:1.17-3.60; p-trend:0.01) and poor general sleep quality (OR:1.71; 95% CI:1.04-2.82; p-trend:0.03). Each 100 g/d increment in meat intake was associated with a 60% higher risk of both large sleep duration changes and poor sleep quality (OR:1.60; 95% CI:1.07-2.40). Results were in the same direction for red and processed meat and for white meat separately, and among individuals with physical impairment. Higher meat consumption (≥128 g/d) was associated with changes in sleep duration and with poor sleep in older adults.

Abstract
AIM This study examined the association of adherence to the Mediterranean diet with academic performance and tested whether this association was mediated by sleep in Spanish adolescents. METHODS We recruited 269 adolescents (52% boys) aged 13.9 ± 0.3 years from the Deporte, ADOlescencia y Salud study of 38 secondary schools and sport clubs in Castellon, Spain, between February and May 2015. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed by the KIDMED questionnaire, sleep quality was evaluated with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index test and sleep duration was objectively computed using a wrist-worn accelerometer. Academic performance was assessed through final school grades and a validated test. RESULTS Greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with higher scores in language, core subjects, grade point average and verbal ability (p < 0.05). Sleep quality acted as a significant mediator of the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and final grades in maths, language, core subjects and the grade point average. CONCLUSION Our data show that the influence of adherence to the Mediterranean diet on academic performance was mediated by sleep quality in adolescents. Education and public health professionals should work together to achieve both improved health status and academic performance in adolescents.

The Effectiveness of a Smartphone Application on Modifying the Intakes of Macro and Micronutrients in Primary Care: A Randomized Controlled Trial. The EVIDENT II Study. Nutrients 2018; 10:nu10101473. Abstract
Background: This study evaluates the effectiveness of adding a diet smartphone application to standard counseling to modify dietary composition over the long term (12 months). Methods: A randomized, controlled, multicenter clinical trial was conducted involving the participation of 833 subjects from primary care clinics (415 to the intervention (counseling + application) group (IG) and 418 to the control (counseling) group (CG)). Both groups were counseled about a healthy diet and physical activity. For the 3-month intervention period, the IG was also trained to use a diet smartphone application that involved dietary self-monitoring and tailored feedback. Nutritional composition was estimated using a self-reported food frequency questionnaire. Results: An analysis of repeated measures revealed an interaction between the group and the percentages of carbohydrates (p = 0.031), fats (p = 0.015) and saturated fats (p = 0.035) consumed. Both groups decreased their energy intake (Kcal) at 12 months (IG: −114 (95% CI: −191 to −36); CG: −108 (95% CI: −184 to −31)). The IG reported a higher percentage intake of carbohydrates (1.1%; 95% CI: 0.1 to 2.0), and lower percentage intakes of fats (−1.0%; 95% CI: −1.9 to −0.1) and saturated fats (−0.4%; 95%CI: −0.8 to −0.1) when compared to the CG. Conclusions: Better results were achieved in terms of modifying usual diet composition from counseling and the diet smartphone application compared to counseling alone. This was evaluated by a self-reported questionnaire, which indicated an increased percentage intake of carbohydrates, and decreased percentage intakes of fats and saturated fats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the cross-sectional association between habitual diet quality, dietary patterns and sleep duration. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 838 men and 1065 women participating in a large, population-based cohort study, the Geelong Osteoporosis Study. A diet quality score (DQS) was derived from answers to a food-frequency questionnaire, and a factor analysis identified habitual dietary patterns. Self-reported sleep duration was dichotomized into 'short sleep duration' (< 7 h/night) and 'adequate sleep duration' (≥ 7 h/night). Sleep duration was also grouped into predetermined cut-off ranges (< 5, 5.01-6, 6.01-7, 7.01-8, 8.01-9, 9.01-10 and ≥ 10.01 h /night) to explore the relationship between sleep duration, DQS and dietary patterns. RESULTS 363 (34.0%) women and 339 (36.1%) men were identified with short sleep duration. After adjustments for age, socioeconomic status, education, physical activity and body mass index, each standard deviation increase in the factor score for traditional dietary pattern was associated with a 13% reduced odds for short sleep duration in men. In women, each standard deviation increase in DQS score was associated with a 21% reduced odds for short sleep duration. In women, adequate sleep was related to higher modern dietary pattern scores when compared both with excessive sleep duration (> 9 h) and shorter sleep duration (< 7 h). CONCLUSION Diet quality score was associated with adequate sleep duration (≥ 7 h) and reduced odds for short sleep duration (< 7 h) in Australian women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Macronutrient intake was associated with habitual sleep duration, a recognized metabolic risk factor. However, results are not clear for populations with large diversities in dietary habits and urbanization levels. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the associations between relative macronutrient intakes and sleep duration, and the potential modification effect of urban-rural residence among adult Chinese population. METHODS We analyzed data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey 2009. In total, 9239 men and women aged 18 years or older were included. Dietary intakes were measured using a combination of a 3-day recall and household-based food weighing approach. Sleep duration was self-reported as hours of sleeping every 24 h. RESULTS Our participants have a mean sleep duration of 7.9 ± 1.2 h. After multivariate adjustment, higher intake of carbohydrate as percentage of total energy was associated with longer sleep duration (β ± SE = 0.43 ± 0.12, P < 0.001); and an inverse association was observed for the relative protein intake (β ± SE = -2.12 ± 0.47, P < 0.001). After stratification, the inverse association for protein was only detected in rural residents (β ± SE = -3.30 ± 0.66, P < 0.001), but not in urban participants (β ± SE = -0.44 ± 0.74, P = 0.55) (P for interaction = 0.002). Similarly, a marginal interaction with residence was observed for carbohydrate-sleep association. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggested that the relative intakes of protein/carbohydrate were associated with sleep duration among adult Chinese, especially those in rural areas.
