Abstract
Eveningness has been associated with both disturbed sleep and depression. It is unclear, however, if deprived sleep explains evening types' vulnerability to depression. The role of pre-sleep rumination in these associations also remains understudied. The present study assessed the relationship between eveningness and sleep quality, as well as the possible mediating effect of pre-sleep rumination and the moderating effect of a history of depression, under naturalistic conditions. Eighty-eight Dutch-speaking participants (87.5% females, 21.4 ± 3.7 years) were selected on the basis of their non-intermediate chronotype using the Morningness Eveningness Questionnaire (evening types (n = 53); morning types (n = 35)). Depression status was assessed through a diagnostic interview (healthy (n = 61); remitted depressed (n = 27)). Participants' sleep characteristics were monitored via actigraphy and sleep diaries for seven consecutive days and nights. Pre-sleep rumination was measured via a self-report questionnaire. Evening types had longer subjective and actigraphic sleep onset latency than morning types. Pre-sleep rumination did not mediate the former associations but predicted longer subjective sleep onset latency. Furthermore, the relationship between chronotype and subjective sleep onset latency was moderated by depression history. Remitted depressed evening types reported longer sleep onset latency than healthy evening and morning types, possibly posing the former at a higher risk for depressive relapse. Overall, the current findings address the need to further investigate the physiological signature of circadian rhythms and sleep latency. This could serve as a foundation for the development of prevention and early intervention programs, tailored for mood and sleep disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are common in young adults, and the link between chronotype profile and TMDs is unclear. OBJECTIVE This study examined TMD prevalence and chronotype distribution and explored the relationship between chronotype and TMDs in young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 663 students from Sichuan University completed questionnaires. Chronotype profiles were assessed using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, and TMDs were screened using the Fonseca Memory Index. To validate the findings, 68 TMD patients and 136 controls were enrolled. RESULTS The prevalence of TMDs was 69.7%, with significant differences among chronotype profiles. The intermediate profile was the most common chronotype. Eveningness profile was associated with higher TMDs prevalence and severity. Muscle pain and side movement difficulty scores were higher in eveningness and intermediate profiles. Female gender (OR 2.345; 95% CI 1.668-3.297) was a TMD risk factor, while morningness profile (OR 0.537; 95% CI 0.297-0.970) was protective. Validation with TMD patients and controls supported these findings, showing higher eveningness profile prevalence in the TMD groups. CONCLUSIONS TMDs have a high prevalence in college students, chronotype profiles shown to be associated with TMDs. Morningness is the protection factor in TMDs and PT, eveningness is a risk factor for IT.

Abstract
Objectives: Social jetlag (SJL), the discrepancy between an individual's inherent circadian rhythm and external social schedule, is associated with obesity. This study aimed to investigate whether SJL also influences body weight and body fat loss during dieting. Methods: This was an observational study from 2015 to 2018 with participants who had joined an exercise and nutrition program at a private personal training gym. Data from 11,829 individuals provided by the gym along with their sleep logs were analyzed. Differences in change in body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (%body fat) were compared by the degree of SJL. Regression was conducted for the change in BMI and %body fat on SJL, adjusted for gender, age, engagement duration in the program, initial BMI, initial %body fat, chronotype, and dietary intakes. Results: The subjects comprised 3,696 men and 8,133 women with a mean age of 40.4 years. Greater SJL was associated with a lower efficacy of BMI and %body fat reduction. The change in BMI (+ 0.56 / hour: SJL) and %body fat (+ 1.40 / hour: SJL) was associated with SJL after adjusting for each variable including dietary intake. Conclusion: SJL was associated with the effect of exercise and nutrition instruction on BMI and body fat reduction, even after adjustment for covariates related to dietary intake. Maintaining consistent sleep-wake rhythms may be crucial for enhancing the efficacy of weight loss programs. Abstract
The light/dark cycle is the main external cue to synchronize the human biological clock. Modern lifestyles typically lead to less daylight exposure and blunted 24 h-amplitude. We evaluated the association of outdoor daylight exposure (frequency, duration, regularity and shift) with chronotype estimated by sleep phase, regularity of routines, sleep, well-being (WHO-5), and depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), in a sample of 1,095 participants (81.8% female; 87.9% aged 18-49) surveyed online between July and November 2020. We analyzed direct and indirect associations in daylight-mood relationship with chronotype-estimate, routine regularity, and sleep as mediators. Outdoor daylight exposure was associated with WHO-5/PHQ-9 scores in mediation models, with higher total effects when the exposure was every day (β = 4.13 ± 0.53/ β = -3.81 ± 0.67), for more than 4 hours (β = 3.77 ± 0.91/ β = -3.83 ± 1.31) and during the morning (β = 3.41 ± 0.53/ β = -3.74 ± 0.70) in reference to lack of exposure. Chronotype-estimate, routine regularity score, and sleep problems acted as mediators, while social jetlag and sleep duration did not play an important role in this association. This study advanced the understanding of the complex interplay between light exposure, mental health, and individual characteristics of sleep and other routine regularities, and showed the benefits of optimizing daylight exposure to improve mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common anxiety disorder among adolescents, significantly impacting their concentration and learning capabilities. The connection between emotional well-being and sleep is well-established, and Korean adolescents are particularly prone to inadequate sleep. This study aimed to determine the association between sleep duration and GAD in Korean adolescents. METHODS This study was conducted using data from 106,513 adolescents aged 12-18 years. Data from the 2020-2022 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey were used. Sleep duration was classified into five groups, based on an average sleep duration of 7-7.9 h in adolescents. Social jet lag was defined as a misalignment between an individual's biological and social clocks. Differences in sleep duration between weekdays and weekends, social jet lag, and bedtime were each classified into three categories. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between sleep duration and GAD. RESULTS Comparing the five groups classified based on sleep duration, adolescents in the groups that slept less experienced a significant increase in the odds of developing GAD (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: boys: 1.10 in the 6.0-6.9-h group, 1.14 in the 5.0-5.9-h group, and 1.23 in the ≤ 4.9-h group; girls: 1.05 in the 6.0-6.9-h group, 1.19 in the 5.0-5.9-h group, 1.22 in the ≤ 4.9-h group). Adolescents with poor sleep quality experienced more frequent instances of inadequate sleep (aOR: boys: 2.51; girls: 2.43). CONCLUSIONS GAD is strongly associated with insufficient sleep. Consequently, it is imperative to assess and address GAD in adolescents with irregular sleep patterns.

Abstract
Insufficient sleep on weekdays has become a societal norm, and studies have shown that sleep deprivation increases the risk of depression. Although individuals often resort to weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) as a compensatory measure, the present evidence supporting its efficacy in mitigating the risk of depression is limited. This article attempts to explore the relationship between CUS and depression. In this study, a total of 5510 participants were included, characterized into two groups: nondepressed (n = 5051) and depressed (n = 459), with data extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Compared with people without CUS, those practicing CUS exhibited a significantly lower risk of depression (OR = 0.81, P = 0.048). In subgroup analysis, this reduction effect was only observed in males (OR = 0.70, 95 % CI 0.05 to 0.99, P = 0.04), middle-aged (>40, ≤60) (OR: 0.57, 95 % CI: 0.40 to 0.81, P = 0.002), married or living with parents (OR: 0.61, 95 % CI: 0.44 to 0.86, P = 0.004), groups with three or more family members (OR: 0.69, 95 % CI: 0.52 to 0.93, P = 0.01), and individuals without alcohol intake (OR: 0.24,95 % CI: 0.09 to 0.67, P = 0.006). Therefore, in the realm of depression treatment, doctors may consider advising patients to get adequate sleep on weekends as part of their overall treatment plan. At the same time, individuals can also choose weekend sleep as a proactive strategy for regulating their psychological status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association between sleep irregularity, anxiety, and depression while controlling for other sleep dimensions and using a longitudinal design. METHODS Longitudinal cohort study which started in April 2020 during the first French lockdown in the general population. Follow-up questionnaires were completed in June 2020, a period without lockdown measures. Participants were asked about their sleep (regularity, duration, timing, complaints) and their anxiety (General Anxiety Disorder-7) and depressive (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) symptoms. RESULTS A total of 3745 participants were included (mean age: 28.9 years) with 2945 women (78.6%). At baseline, 38.1% (1428) of participants reported irregular sleep timing, 23.8% (891) anxiety and 28.9% (1081) depressive symptoms. In cross-sectional analyses, irregular sleep timing was associated with a 2.5-fold higher likelihood of anxiety and a 4-fold higher likelihood of depressive symptoms compared to regular sleepers. Associations were not explained by the other sleep dimensions and persisted in a longitudinal analysis, with irregular sleep timing at baseline being associated with anxiety (OR = 3.27[1.58-6.76]) and depressive symptoms (OR = 3.45[1.66-7.19]) during follow-up. CONCLUSION The results show a strong association between sleep irregularity and mental health. Furthers studies are needed to explore how sleep regularity could promote good mental health in non-clinical populations.

Abstract
LAY ABSTRACT Research shows that people with autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder often have sleep issues and problems with the body's natural daily rhythms, known as circadian rhythms. By exploring the genetic variants associated with these rhythms and the conditions, this study reveals that these rhythm changes and sleep patterns are directly linked to autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. It found that the timing of one's most active hours can increase the likelihood of having both autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Importantly, it also shows that good sleep quality might protect against autism spectrum disorder, while disturbed sleep in people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder seems to be a result rather than the cause of the condition. This understanding can help doctors and researchers develop better treatment approaches that focus on the specific ways sleep and body rhythms affect those with autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, considering their unique associations with circadian rhythms and sleep patterns. Understanding these unique links can lead to more effective, personalized care for those affected by these conditions.

Abstract
Academic performance plays a crucial role in long-term educational attainment and occupational function. Chronotype refers to an individual's daily tendencies for times for waking, activity, and sleep. Social jetlag reflects the mismatch between an individual's chronotype and their social schedule. Because school typically starts early in the morning, later chronotype is often associated with daytime sleepiness, insufficient sleep, and poor academic performance. However, the relationship between academic performance, chronotype, and social jetlag has not been extensively examined in large samples like the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. We hypothesized that greater social jetlag would predict poorer cognitive and academic performance. Year 2 (ages 11-14) cross-sectional data from the ABCD cohort (n = 6,890 adolescents) were used to evaluate academic performance (i.e. self-reported past year grades), NIH Toolbox cognitive performance measures, chronotype, and social jetlag from the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire. We found that later chronotype and greater social jetlag predicted poorer cognitive and academic performance with small effect sizes. Our findings emphasize the importance of individual differences in chronotype and social jetlag when designing class schedules, as aligning school activities with student optimal sleep-wake times may contribute to improved academic performance.

Abstract
Objective Discrepancies between sleep timing on work/school and free days, also known as social jetlag (SJL), can cause health problems. These issues occur most often in individuals from adolescence to the early 20s, which is equivalent to the age of university students. This study was designed to explore the recommended level of physical activity required to minimize SJL and to examine the relationship between SJL and objective physical activity among female university students. Methods We assessed the SJL of 68 female students using the Japanese version of the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire. The objective physical activity and sleep variables of subjects were also evaluated at 3 to 4 weeks using a small triaxial accelerometer. Results A significant negative correlation was found between SJL and physical activity on both free (r = - 0.435, p < 0.001) and school days (r = - 0.341, p < 0.01). According to the linear regression analysis, physical activity of 11,174 steps on school days and 10,713 steps on free days had the lowest SJL value. Total sleep time on free days had a significant positive correlation with SJL (r = 0.399, p < 0.001) and a negative correlation with physical activity (r = - 0.520, p < 0.001). Discussion Our results suggest that substantial SJL may cause chronic fatigue and lead to a low level of physical activity in female university students. These results also imply that the recommended level of physical activity necessary to minimize SJL among these students is around 11,000 steps on both school and free days.

Abstract
BACKGROUND "One for all, and all for one," the famous rallying cry of the Three Musketeers, in Alexandre Dumas's popular novel, certainly applies to the 20,000 cells composing the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). These cells work together to form the central clock that coordinates body rhythms in tune with the day-night cycle. Like virtually every body cell, individual SCN cells exhibit autonomous circadian oscillations, but this rhythmicity only reaches a high level of precision and robustness when the cells are coupled with their neighbors. Therefore, understanding the functional network organization of SCN cells beyond their core rhythmicity is an important issue in circadian biology. SUMMARY The present review summarizes the main results from our recent study demonstrating the feasibility of recording SCN cells in freely moving mice and the significance of variations in intracellular calcium over several timescales. KEY MESSAGE We discuss how in vivo imaging at the cell level will be pivotal to interrogate the mammalian master clock, in an integrated context that preserves the SCN network organization, with intact inputs and outputs.

Abstract
Mental health is independently influenced by the inclination to sleep at specific times (chronotype) and the actual sleep timing (behavior). Chronotype and timing of actual sleep are, however, often misaligned. This study aims to determine how chronotype, sleep timing, and the alignment between the two impact mental health. In a community-dwelling cohort of middle- and older-aged adults (UK Biobank, n = 73,888), we examined the impact of chronotype (questionnaire-based), the timing of behavior (determined with 7-day accelerometry), and the alignment between the two on mental, behavioral, neurodevelopmental disorders (MBN), depression, and anxiety, as assessed through ICD-10 codes. As compared to morning types with early behavior (aligned), morning types with late behavior (misaligned) had an increased risk of having MBN, depression, and anxiety (p's<0.001). As compared to evening-types with late behavior (aligned), however, evening-types with early behavior (misaligned) had a decreased risk of depression (p < 0.01), with a trend for MBN (p = 0.04) and anxiety (p = 0.05). Longitudinal analyses, in which the likelihood of developing de novo mental health disorders was associated with chronotype, behavioral timing, and alignment between the two, confirmed cross-sectional findings. To age healthily, individuals should start sleeping before 1AM, despite chronobiological preferences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep and circadian rhythm disruptions are common in patients with mood disorders. The intricate relationship between these disruptions and mood has been investigated, but their causal dynamics remain unknown. METHODS We analysed data from 139 patients (76 female, mean age = 23.5 ± 3.64 years) with mood disorders who participated in a prospective observational study in South Korea. The patients wore wearable devices to monitor sleep and engaged in smartphone-delivered ecological momentary assessment of mood symptoms. Using a mathematical model, we estimated their daily circadian phase based on sleep data. Subsequently, we obtained daily time series for sleep/circadian phase estimates and mood symptoms spanning >40,000 days. We analysed the causal relationship between the time series using transfer entropy, a non-linear causal inference method. FINDINGS The transfer entropy analysis suggested causality from circadian phase disturbance to mood symptoms in both patients with MDD (n = 45) and BD type I (n = 35), as 66.7% and 85.7% of the patients with a large dataset (>600 days) showed causality, but not in patients with BD type II (n = 59). Surprisingly, no causal relationship was suggested between sleep phase disturbances and mood symptoms. INTERPRETATION Our findings suggest that in patients with mood disorders, circadian phase disturbances directly precede mood symptoms. This underscores the potential of targeting circadian rhythms in digital medicine, such as sleep or light exposure interventions, to restore circadian phase and thereby manage mood disorders effectively. Abstract
Circadian rhythms are entrained by external factors such as sunlight and social cues, but also depend on internal factors such as age. Adolescents exhibit late chronotypes, but worldwide school starts early in the morning leading to unhealthy sleep habits. Several studies reported that adolescents benefit from later school start times. However, the effect of later school start time on different outcomes varies between studies, and most previous literature only takes into consideration the social clock (i.e. local time of school starting time) but not the solar clock (e.g. the distance between school start time and sunrise). Thus, there is an important gap in the literature: when assessing the effect of a school start time on chronotype and sleep of adolescents at different locations and/or seasons, the solar clock might differ and, consistently, the obtained results. For example, the earliest school start time for adolescents has been suggested to be 08:30 hours, but this school start time might correspond to different solar times at different times of the year, longitudes and latitudes. Here, we describe the available literature comparing different school start times, considering important factors such as geographic position, nationality, and the local school start time and its distance to sunrise. Then, we described and contrasted the relative role of both social and solar clocks on the chronotype and sleep of adolescents. As a whole, we point and discuss a gap in literature, suggesting that both clocks are relevant when addressing the effect of school start time on adolescents' chronotype and sleep.

Abstract
The discrepancy in sleep timing between weekdays and weekends - social jetlag (SJL) - is known to negatively affect student quality of life (QOL). However, the association between social jetlag and physical/mental QOL among adolescents and the precise effect of social jetlag on depressive symptoms and daytime sleepiness remains unknown. This study investigated the longitudinal course, risk factors, and effects of social jetlag, a circadian misalignment, in a school-based cohort. The participants were 427 students (13.3 ± 0.6 years, 45.2% girls) from five junior high schools. We performed a baseline survey in 2019 and a 1-year follow-up survey in 2020. Depressive symptoms, QOL, and daytime sleepiness were assessed using the Birleson Depression Self-Rating Scale for Children, Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory, and Paediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale. In the baseline survey, 49.6% of the students reported SJL ≥1 h, and 17.1% reported SJL ≥2 h. Among them, 37.2% and 6.8% reported persistent SJL at follow-up, respectively. New incidences of SJL ≥1 h were associated with older age, non-attainment of menarche or voice changes, and longer duration of smartphone use, whereas its persistence was associated with a later chronotype. Persistence of SJL ≥1 h and ≥2 h predicted depressive symptoms and daytime sleepiness at follow-up, whereas new incidences of SJL ≥2 h predicted lower QOL. In conclusion, social jetlag has a persistent course, and daytime functioning can deteriorate as social jetlag becomes chronic. Our findings suggest the need for intensive interventions for social jetlag among adolescents.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that melatonin-containing food (FMT) consumption is associated with a better sleep schedule and cognitive and psychoemotional state in older adults. A cross-sectional study of 557 (79% females) older adults living in the community with a mean age of 68.9 ± 7.7, ranging from 50 to 90 years, was conducted. The study, conducted in May and September 2023 using a face-to-face interview, collected personal data and assessed FMT intake during the day (FMTday) and for dinner (FMTdinner), life satisfaction, positive and negative affect, depression severity, cognitive functions, and sleep characteristics. Multiple regression and logistic regression analysis, adjusted for co-factors, were used to assess the association between the studied indicators. Multiple regression analysis showed that older adults with higher FMT consumption are more satisfied with life (FMTdinner: β = 0.107; ∆R2 = 0.011; p = 0.020), have a lower level of depression (FMTday: β = -0.124; ∆R2 = 0.015; p = 0.003), and higher scores in positive affect (FMTday: β = 0.169; ∆R2 = 0.016; p = 0.007; FMTdinner: β = 0.136; ∆R2 = 0.019; p = 0.003). Logistic regression analysis showed that older adults with higher FMT consumption are less likely to have depression (FMTday: OR, 0.614; 95% CI, 0.436-0.864; p = 0.005; FMTdinner: OR, 0.671; 95% CI, 0.476-0.945; p = 0.023), and they perform better on logical thinking tests (FMTday: OR, 2.066; 95% CI, 1.131-2.204; p = 0.013; FMTdinner: OR, 1.887; 95% CI, 1.183-2.138; p = 0.033). A greater life satisfaction as well as a decrease in the cognitive impairment and psychoemotional state of older adults is associated with a higher consumption of melatonin-containing foods.

Abstract
Changes in sleep are reported in adolescents with depression with a frequency of up to 71%. Aspects of chronobiology and sleep based on the current scientific literature are illustrated and summarized in this narrative review. The circadian clock synchronizes organisms to the light-dark structure of the environment. The individual synchronization is called "chronotype." Chronotype changes according to age, among other factors, and adolescents experience the latest chronotypes overall. The potential discrepancy between internal and external time is called "social jetlag." Social jetlag is especially pronounced during adolescence. It is associated with numerous health risks, such as depression. Changes in sleep behavior in affective disorders and its comorbidity to depression have also been well described in the literature. In this article, underlying concepts from chronobiology and sleep medicine are initially summarized. Then, health risks of disrupted sleep-wake behavior are described, and connections to depression specifically during adolescence are drawn. The article concludes with clinical recommendations for sleep disorders and depression during adolescence as well as suggestions for further research.

Abstract
Substance use disorder (SUD) can have circadian characteristics and individuals with evening chronotype are more prone to addiction. In this study, the effect of chronotypes on the treatment outcomes of SUD was investigated. The study included 66 patients who were diagnosed with SUD according to DSM-5. Two clinical interviews were conducted at 6-month intervals, and remission/relapse status was evaluated at the second interview. The Structured Clinical Interview Form for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I), Addiction Profile Index Practitioner Form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index and Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) were applied to the patients. MEQ scores of relapsed patients were found to be different in terms of eveningness than those in remission (45.62 ± 8.70 versus 49.75 ± 7.60, p = 0.045). As the craving and addiction profile index total scores (addiction severity) increased, eveningness chronotype scores also increased (r = - 0.387 and r = - 0.286, respectively). The mean scores of craving and BDI were higher in relapsed patients compared to those in remission (p = 0.003 and p = 0.015, respectively). Our results suggest that patients with SUD had a lower morningness chronotype than the general population; additionally, more relapsed patients had an eveningness chronotype. Thus, chronotypes may play a role in the onset, prevention, and treatment outcome of SUD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To test whether adolescents' mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with the combination of their instructional approach(es) and their sleep patterns. DESIGN Cross-sectional. SETTING Adolescents were recruited through social media outlets in October and November 2020 to complete an online survey. PARTICIPANTS Participants were 4442 geographically and racially diverse, community-dwelling students (grades 6-12, 51% female, 36% non-White, 87% high schoolers). MEASUREMENTS Participants completed items from the PROMIS Pediatric Depressive Symptoms and Anxiety scales. Participants reported their instructional approach(es), bedtimes, and wake times for each day in the past week. Participants were categorized into five combined instructional approach groups. Average sleep opportunity was calculated as the average time between bedtime and waketime. Social jetlag was calculated as the difference between the average sleep midpoint preceding non-scheduled and scheduled days. RESULTS Emotional distress was elevated in this sample, with a large proportion of adolescents reporting moderate-severe (T-score ≥ 65) levels of depressive symptoms (49%) and anxiety (28%). There were significant differences between instructional approach groups, such that adolescents attending all schooldays in-person reported the lowest depressive symptom and anxiety T-scores (P < .001, ηp2 = .012), but also the shortest sleep opportunity (P < .001, ηp2 = .077) and greatest social jetlag (P < .001, ηp2 = .037) of all groups. Adolescents attending school in person, with sufficient sleep opportunity (≥8-9 hours/night) and limited social jetlag (<2 hours) had significantly lower depressive (ηp2 = .014) and anxiety (ηp2 = .008) T-scores than other adolescents. CONCLUSIONS Prioritizing in-person education and promoting healthy sleep patterns (more sleep opportunity, more consistent sleep schedules) may help bolster adolescent mental health.

Abstract
Sleep and mental health are intrinsically intertwined, but not every individual with problems sleeping develops a mental health disorder. This study examined the association among chronotypes, resilience, sleep quality and mental health symptoms amongst otherwise healthy individuals. Two hundred adults (Mage = 27.75 ± 5.11, 68% female) with no previous diagnosis of mental illness were recruited and filled in a set of questionnaires measuring chronotypes, sleep quality, depression and anxiety symptoms. The findings from the path analysis showed that the morning type had a statistically significant direct effect on a range of sleep quality indices. These included better subjective sleep quality, shortened sleep latency, and fewer daytime dysfunctions, as well as a higher level of resilience. However, it did not significantly affect depression and anxiety symptoms. In addition, the morning type had statistically significant indirect effects on a higher level of resilience and fewer depression and anxiety symptoms through the mediating effect of sleep quality indices. Findings from this study support that morning type is associated with better resilience and psychological health, which is mediated through better sleep quality.

Abstract
Women are disproportionally affected by psychological distress and lack of social support and are more vulnerable to the negative impact of chronotype on mental health. This study evaluates cross-sectional associations between chronotype and mental health, while assessing the mediating role of social support among women from diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds. Women from the American Heart Association Go Red for Women Research Network were included (N = 506, mean age = 37 ± 15.7, 61% racial/ethnic minority). Chronotype, depression, perceived stress, health-related quality of life, and social support were assessed at baseline using validated self-reported questionnaires. Linear regression and causal mediation analyses were performed. Depression and negative emotionality were higher among women with evening vs. morning/intermediate chronotypes (all p < 0.05). Multivariable analyses adjusted for sociodemographic and clinical confounders showed associations between evening chronotype and higher depression (p = 0.004) and negative emotionality (p = 0.010). However, these associations were no longer significant after adjusting for social support (depression: p = 0.12; negative emotionality: p = 0.18). Social support significantly mediated 44.6% and 45.8% of the total effect of chronotype on depression and negative emotionality, respectively. Social support represents a potential mechanism underlying the associations between eveningness and poor mental health. Chronotype and social support should be considered in interventions for the promotion of mental health in women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social jetlag is a circadian misalignment that arises from a discrepancy between activity/sleep schedules on school/work days and free days. This study explored the correlation between social jetlag and self-rated health (SRH) in a representative sample of Korea. METHODS This study included 8259 working population in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2016-2018. Social jetlag was calculated as the difference between the midpoint of sleep time on work day and work-free day. Five-point Likert scale of SRH was used to assess subjective health perception on general health conditions. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) for poor SRH in the 1-2 h or longer than 2 h social jetlag groups compared to that in the reference group (less than 1 h), after adjusting for age, sex, marital status, occupation, household income, and weekly working hours. RESULTS The proportions of those with <1 h, 1-2 h, >2 h of social jetlag were 63.80 %, 25.67 %, and 10.53 %, respectively. The risk of poor SRH increased as social jetlag increased. Greater social jetlag was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of reporting poor SRH. The adjusted ORs for the groups with social jetlag between 1 and <2 h, and >2 h were 1.100 (95 % CI = 0.935-1.295), and 1.503 (95 % CI = 1.097-1.727), respectively. Moreover, the OR trend was statistically significant (p for trend = 0.008). CONCLUSION This study found that social jetlag and poor SRH were significantly related in the Korean working population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Several health issues are associated with irregular sleep patterns. However, it is unclear what causes workers to sleep irregularly. The work interval (WI) between the end of one day's working hours and the start of the next day's working hours contains sleep opportunities, and an irregular WI may result in irregular sleep. This study investigated this association among Japanese daytime workers. METHODS This study recruited 141 daytime workers without shiftwork for a 14-day observational study. Participants reported the WI duration, WI timing, time in bed (TIB: difference between bedtime and wake-up time), and bedtime timing every day before bedtime. The SD over 14 days was used to calculate the regularity scores. Logistic regression analysis was performed. The dependent variables were ≥60 minutes of TIB SD and bedtime timing SD, whereas the independent variables were WI duration and timing SD. RESULTS The odds ratios (ORs) (95% CIs) for ≥60 minutes of TIB SD across categories of WI duration SD were 1.000 (reference) for <30 minutes, 1.344 (0.337-5.360) for 30-60 minutes, and 4.743 (1.441-15.607) for ≥60 minutes. The ORs (95% CIs) for ≥60 min of bedtime timing SD across categories of WI timing SD were 1.000 for <30 minutes, 4.154 (1.574-10.965) for 30-60 minutes, and 7.714 (2.124-28.015) for ≥60 minutes. CONCLUSIONS Regularity of WI was associated with regularity of sleep. To ensure worker health, workers should have regular WI, and if they are exposed to irregular WI, they should make every effort to maintain regular sleep.

Abstract
This study aims to elucidate the mechanisms linking occupational pesticide exposure to depression among rural workers from Maravilha, Brazil. We assessed the mental health, oxidative, and inflammatory profiles of farmers exposed to pesticides (N = 28) and compared them to an urban control group without occupational exposure to pesticides (N = 25). Data on sociodemographic, occupational history, and clinical records were collected. Emotional states were evaluated using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Biochemical, hematological, inflammatory, and redox parameters were examined in blood samples from both groups. Results showed educational disparities between groups and unveiled a concerning underutilization of personal protective equipment (PPEs) among farmers. Glyphosate was the predominant pesticide used by farmers. Farmers exhibited higher BDI scores, including more severe cases of depression. Additionally, elevated levels of creatinine, ALT, AST, and LDH were observed in farmers, suggesting potential renal and hepatic issues due to pesticide exposure. Oxidative stress markers, such as increased lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, along with decreased catalase (CAT) activity and ascorbic acid levels, were noted in the pesticide-exposed group compared to controls. Elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines, particularly IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α, were also observed in pesticide-exposed group. Our findings suggest that inflammation, oxidative distress and lower educational levels may be associated with depression in pesticide-exposed farmers. This study highlights the impact of occupational pesticide exposure on the mental health of rural workers. The underuse of PPEs and the link between depressive symptoms, inflammation, and oxidative stress underscore the urgent need for improved safety measures in agricultural practices. Addressing these issues will contribute to a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between environmental exposures and mental health outcomes.

Abstract
Late chronotype during adolescence is a critical risk factor for poor physical and mental health among adolescents. While social loneliness is confirmed to negatively influence sleep behaviors, the long-term effect of social loneliness on chronotype remains unknown. This study aims to investigate whether social loneliness trajectories from middle childhood to adolescence are associated with chronotype in late adolescence and examine the potential sex differences in these associations. Data were obtained from 2398 adolescents who participated in the Child and Adolescent Behaviors in Long-Term Evolution project. Chronotype was calculated as the midpoint of sleep on free days adjusted for sleep debt. Group-based trajectory modeling and multiple linear regression were employed to establish social loneliness trajectories and determine their associations with chronotype. Social loneliness trajectories were significantly associated with chronotype and varied by sex. Specifically, boys following a high-decreasing trajectory had earlier chronotype during late adolescence than did those following a low-decreasing trajectory (B = - 0.07; p < 0.05). By contrast, girls following a low-to-moderate-increasing trajectory exhibited later chronotype than did those following a low-stable trajectory (B = 0.07; p < 0.01). Social loneliness trajectories, especially those displaying significant fluctuations over time, are critical indicators influencing chronotype among adolescents. Furthermore, these trajectories and their associations with chronotype display sex differences. These findings highlight the need for early interventions for psychological factors such as social loneliness to ensure that the late chronotype can be prevented. In addition, sex variations must be considered.

Abstract
The period of the year from spring to fall, when clocks in most parts of the United States are set one hour ahead of standard time, is called daylight saving time, and its beginning and ending dates and times are set by federal law. The human biological clock is regulated by the timing of light and darkness, which then dictates sleep and wake rhythms. In daily life, the timing of exposure to light is generally linked to the social clock. When the solar clock is misaligned with the social clock, desynchronization occurs between the internal circadian rhythm and the social clock. The yearly change between standard time and daylight saving time introduces this misalignment, which has been associated with risks to physical and mental health and safety, as well as risks to public health. In 2020, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) published a position statement advocating for the elimination of seasonal time changes, suggesting that evidence best supports the adoption of year-round standard time. This updated statement cites new evidence and support for permanent standard time. It is the position of the AASM that the United States should eliminate seasonal time changes in favor of permanent standard time, which aligns best with human circadian biology. Evidence supports the distinct benefits of standard time for health and safety, while also underscoring the potential harms that result from seasonal time changes to and from daylight saving time. Abstract
A chronotype is generally defined as the variability of the phase angle of entrainment, while the latter reflects the relationship between the timing of a certain rhythm (e.g., the sleep-wake cycle) and the timing of an external temporal cue. Individuals can be placed on a spectrum from "morning types" (M types) to "evening types" (E types). E-chronotype has been proposed as a transdiagnostic risk factor for psychiatric conditions, and it has been associated with psychopathological dimensions. Eveningness seems to be correlated with both suicidal ideation (SI) and suicidal behavior (SB) through several possible mediating factors. Immunological alterations have also been linked to later chronotypes and SI/SB. This narrative review aims to summarize the evidence supporting the possible association between chronotypes and suicide and the eventual mediating role of neuroinflammation and several psychopathological dimensions. A search of the literature (2003-2023) was conducted using various databases: PUBMED, EMBASE, Scopus, UpToDate, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library. English-language articles were collected and screened for eligibility. Despite the apparent absence of a direct correlation between E-chronotype and suicidality, E-chronotype promotes a chain of effects that could be involved in an increased risk of SB, in which with neuroinflammation possibly plays an intriguing role and some psychopathological dimensions may stand out.

Abstract
Molecular pathways affecting mood are associated with circadian clock gene variants and are influenced, in part, by the circadian clock, but the molecular mechanisms underlying this link are poorly understood. We use machine learning and statistical analyses to determine the circadian gene variants and clinical features most highly associated with symptoms of seasonality and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in a deeply phenotyped population sample. We report sex-specific clock gene effects on seasonality and SAD symptoms; genotypic combinations of CLOCK3111/ZBTB20 and PER2/PER3B were significant genetic risk factors for males, and CRY2/PER3C and CRY2/PER3-VNTR were significant risk factors for females. Anxiety, eveningness, and increasing age were significant clinical risk factors for seasonality and SAD for females. Protective factors for SAD symptoms (in females only) included single gene variants: CRY1-GG and PER3-VNTR-4,5. Clock gene effects were partially or fully mediated by diurnal preference or chronotype, suggesting multiple indirect effects of clock genes on seasonality symptoms. Interestingly, protective effects of CRY1-GG, PER3-VNTR-4,5, and ZBTB20 genotypes on seasonality and depression were not mediated by chronotype, suggesting some clock variants have direct effects on depressive symptoms related to SAD. Our results support previous links between CRY2, PER2, and ZBTB20 genes and identify novel links for CLOCK and PER3 with symptoms of seasonality and SAD. Our findings reinforce the sex-specific nature of circadian clock influences on seasonality and SAD and underscore the multiple pathways by which clock variants affect downstream mood pathways via direct and indirect mechanisms.

Abstract
Mood disorders, including depression and anxiety, affect almost one-fifth of the world's adult population and are becoming increasingly prevalent. Mutations in circadian clock genes have previously been associated with mood disorders both directly and indirectly through alterations in circadian phase, suggesting that the circadian clock influences multiple molecular pathways involved in mood. By targeting previously identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that have been implicated in anxiety and depressive disorders, we use a combination of statistical and machine learning techniques to investigate associations with the generalized anxiety disorder assessment (GAD-7) scores in a UK Biobank sample of 90,882 individuals. As in previous studies, we observed that females exhibited higher GAD-7 scores than males regardless of genotype. Interestingly, we found no significant effects on anxiety from individual circadian gene variants; only circadian genotypes with multiple SNP variants showed significant associations with anxiety. For both sexes, severe anxiety is associated with a 120-fold increase in odds for individuals with CRY2_AG(rs1083852)/ZBTB20_TT(rs1394593) genotypes and is associated with a near 40-fold reduction in odds for individuals with PER3-A_CG(rs228697)/ZBTB20_TT(rs1394593) genotypes. We also report several sex-specific associations with anxiety. In females, the CRY2/ZBTB20 genotype combination showed a > 200-fold increase in odds of anxiety and PER3/ZBTB20 and CRY1 /PER3-A genotype combinations also appeared as female risk factors. In males, CRY1/PER3-A and PER3-B/ZBTB20 genotype combinations were associated with anxiety risk. Mediation analysis revealed direct associations of CRY2/ZBTB20 variant genotypes with moderate anxiety in females and CRY1/PER3-A variant genotypes with severe anxiety in males. The association of CRY1/PER3-A variant genotypes with severe anxiety in females was partially mediated by extreme evening chronotype. Our results reinforce existing findings that females exhibit stronger anxiety outcomes than males, and provide evidence for circadian gene associations with anxiety, particularly in females. Our analyses only identified significant associations using two-gene combinations, underscoring the importance of combined gene effects on anxiety risk. We describe novel, robust associations between gene combinations involving the ZBTB20 SNP (rs1394593) and risk of anxiety symptoms in a large population sample. Our findings also support previous findings that the ZBTB20 SNP is an important factor in mood disorders, including seasonal affective disorder. Our results suggest that reduced expression of this gene significantly modulates the risk of anxiety symptoms through direct influences on mood-related pathways. Together, these observations provide novel links between the circadian clockwork and anxiety symptoms and identify potential molecular pathways through which clock genes may influence anxiety risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether the association between SJLsc (sleep-corrected social jetlag) and depressive mood is significant and independent of sleep debt. METHODS Participants from the general adult population were interviewed using structured questionnaires on sleep duration, weekday/weekend sleep schedules, and depressive mood (Patient Health Questionnaire-9). Social jetlag (SJL) was measured by SJLsc and standard SJL (SJLs). SJLs was the absolute difference between mid-sleep time on free days (MSF) and workdays (MSW). For SJLsc, both MSF and MSW were adjusted for average sleep duration across the week according to the direction of sleep debt. Sleep debt was defined by sleep extension on free days. The association of SJL with depression was investigated, and covariates included age, sex, sociodemographic factors, insomnia symptoms, sleep duration, and sleep debt. RESULTS A total of 1982 individuals (1089 men; age 43.1 ± 14.4 years) were analyzed. SJL was present in 24.6% measured by SJLsc and 51.0% by SJLs. SJLsc and SJLs were significantly associated with depressive mood (r = 0.06, P = 0.02; r = 0.06, P = 0.01, respectively), independent of sleep debt. Sleep debt was also associated with depression (r = 0.07, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS By adopting sleep-corrected formula for SJL, this study found that misaligned and insufficient sleep, at levels occurring in routine social life, can negatively affect mood. Minimizing social jetlag and sleep deprivation may promote individual psychological well-being.

Abstract
Medication administration errors could result in severe complications in critical care units. This study investigated an association between chronotype, sleep quality and medication errors among essential nurses of care in Qazvin teaching hospitals in Iran. In this multicenter, cross-sectional study, all registered nurses of critical care units of Qazvin teaching hospitals were recruited. Data were collected through anonymous questionnaires, including socio-demographic data, Morning-Evening Questionnaire (MEQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and medication errors data. Data were analyzed with SPSS v.24 by using the Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and logistic regression analysis. P values less than 0.05 were considered significant. The mean age and work experience were 33.12 ± 6.74 and 9.11 ± 5.96, respectively. One hundred sixty-six nurses (96%) have been working in rotating shifts. Nurses with intermediate chronotypes were predominant (n = 122; 70.5%). The majority of nurses (68.2%) had poor sleep quality (n = 118). Logistic regression analysis showed eveningness chronotype was associated with 4.743 fold increased risk of medication error (P < 0.033). No association was found between medication error and sleep quality (p < 0.95). There was no significant relationship between chronotype and sleep quality (P < 0.257). Our study showed that nurses with eveningness chronotype make more medication errors; therefore, considering the individual circadian preference before deciding on their shift timing assignment will be an important issue in reducing nurses' medication errors and improving patient safety in critical care units.

Abstract
A specific type of sleep disruption, social jetlag, involves an incongruence of sleep time between weekends and weekdays. This study investigated relationships between social jetlag and mood symptom lability and trajectories of daily reward responsiveness and mood symptoms. Participants (N = 130) from three groups (moderate reward sensitivity, high reward sensitivity, and high reward sensitivity with a diagnosed bipolar spectrum disorder [BSD]) were recruited from an ongoing longitudinal study based on their self-reported reward sensitivity and a diagnostic interview. For this study, they completed 20 days of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of reward responsiveness and mood symptoms and a daily sleep diary. Social jetlag was significantly associated with differences in trajectories of depressive symptoms between groups. Specifically, greater social jetlag was associated with a greater increase in depressive symptoms over the 20 days for participants in the high reward sensitivity and BSD groups compared to the moderate reward sensitivity group. Social jetlag also was significantly associated with depressive symptom lability during the EMA period, but this finding was reduced to a trend toward significance when controlling for self-reported sleep duration. The study adds to the literature with methodological strengths including the EMA design and assessment of symptom and reward responsiveness trajectories.

Abstract
Sleep changes predate shifts in mood/affect, thought processing, mental and physical health, civic engagement, and contextual circumstances, among other things. Theory predicts that these changes may lead to shifts in political and social beliefs. Do sleep disruptions shape how individuals see the world, the people around them, and themselves in relation to others? In this article, we use daily survey data from the 77 waves (N ≈ 460,000) of the University of California, Los Angeles's 2019-2021 Nationscape Survey-a nationally representative political survey-to examine the effect of an exogenous short-term sleep disruption on measures of political views, polarization, and discriminatory beliefs. Using this data set, we leverage the modest sleep disruption that occurs at the start (and end) of Daylight Saving Time (DST) and employ a regression discontinuity in time design around the precise DST cutoff (which we supplement with event study models). Despite strong theoretical expectations and correlational connection between measures of sleep and many outcomes related to social fragmentation, we find that the DST change has little to no causal effect on citizens' levels of polarization or their discriminatory attitudes. These effects are precise enough to rule out small effects, robust to a host of specification checks, and consistent across potential subgroups of interest. Our work adds to a small but growing body of research on the social and political effects of sleep disruptions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Transdiagnostic Sleep and Circadian Intervention for Youth (TranS-C) was developed to improve sleep and circadian functioning in adolescents. This study examined the 12-month effects for TranS-C compared with psychoeducation (PE). We also investigated whether a text messaging intervention can promote maintenance of treatment effects. METHOD At the baseline, adolescents (58% female, average age = 14.8 years) with an eveningness chronotype were randomized to TranS-C (n = 89) or PE (n = 87). At 6-month follow-up, participants were randomized to receive text messages that had repeated treatment information (n = 47), text messages that prompted the recall of treatment information (n = 50), or no text messages (n = 47). RESULTS Relative to PE, TranS-C was associated with a reduced eveningness (b = 2.06, p = .005, d = 0.29) from the baseline to a 12-month follow-up. TranS-C treatment effects, relative to PE, were augmented by receiving text messages, compared to no text messages, for eveningness from baseline to 12-month follow-up (b = 1.38, p = .008, d = 0.28) and from 6- to 12-month follow-up (b = 1.07, p = .046, d = 0.21). Neither TranS-C nor text messages were significantly associated with other primary outcomes. TranS-C and text messages were significantly associated with improvements on selected secondary sleep and health outcomes through follow-up. CONCLUSIONS For adolescents with an eveningness chronotype, improved sleep and circadian functioning on selected outcomes were maintained over 12 months for TranS-C compared with PE. Text messages boosted the effects of TranS-C through 12-month follow-up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited research has simultaneously examined the link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), short sleep duration, and depressive symptoms among middle-aged or older Chinese adults. This study aims to investigate the association between ACEs and later-life depressive symptoms, and to examine the mediating role of short sleep duration (<6 h/night) in this association. METHODS Data of 11,452 participants aged ≥45 years were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Information on ACEs, depressive symptoms, and sleep duration were reported via questionnaires. The mediating effect of short sleep duration in the association between ACEs and depressive symptoms was examined by Baron and Kenny's causal steps method and Karlson/Holm/Breen (KHB) method. RESULTS Compared to non-exposed group, exposure to ACEs was significantly associated with increased odds of depressive symptoms in a dose-response pattern. The odds ratio of depressive symptoms increased from 1.27 (95 % CI: 1.11-1.46) for one ACE to 3.38 (95 % CI: 2.92-3.90) for ≥4 ACEs. The KHB method identified significant mediating role of short sleep duration in the association between experiencing three or more ACEs and depressive symptoms, with the proportional mediation estimated at 8.96 % and 8.85 % for the groups with 3 ACEs and ≥4 ACEs, respectively. The results were consistent across genders and gender did not moderate these associations. LIMITATIONS The cross-sectional design limited the ability to make causal inference. CONCLUSIONS ACEs were positively associated with depressive symptoms, and short sleep duration partially mediated this association. Promoting optimal sleep duration among ACE-exposed individuals might improve their mental health.

Abstract
Adolescents are an at-risk group for circadian misalignment. The contribution of sleep-wake rhythm instability to the psychoemotional, cognitive, and weight disorders of adolescents has been studied in sufficient detail. At the same time, there is insufficient information about the association between chrononutrition indices and the well-being of adolescents. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between chrononutrition indices and academic achievement, psychoemotional state, and anthropometric indicators in adolescents. The study involved 12,759 students in grades 6-11 of secondary schools, aged 14.2 ± 1.7 years old; 57.2% of whom were girls. Participants provided personal data, frequency and time of meals during the day and at night, on weekdays and weekends, and completed the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale and the Yale Food Addiction Scale. There is a U-shaped association between eating mid-phase (EPFc), eating jetlag (EJL), and eating window (EW) with GPA, ZSDSI, and FA. At the same time, the frequency of night eating (NE) is linearly associated with the studied parameters. NE is the strongest predictor of ZSDSI (β = 0.24), FA (β = 0.04), and GPA (β = -0.22). EPFc, EJL, and EW practically do not differ in the strength of their association with the studied indicators. ZSDSI is most closely associated with the chrononutrition indices. There is a weak negative association between BMI and EW (β = -0.03) and NE (β = -0.04). Thus, circadian eating disorders are more often observed in adolescents with poor academic performance, high levels of depression, and food addiction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence suggests that conditions with decreased morning and increased evening light exposure, including shift work, daylight-saving time, and eveningness, are associated with elevated mortality and suicide risk. Given that the alignment between the astronomical, biological, and social time varies across a time zone, with later-shifted daylight exposure in the western partition, we hypothesized that western time zone partitions would have higher suicide rates than eastern partitions. METHODS United States (U.S.) county-level suicide and demographic data, from 2010 to 2018, were obtained from a Centers for Disease Control database. Using longitude and latitude, counties were sorted into the western, middle, or eastern partition of their respective time zones, as well as the northern and southern halves of the U.S. Linear regressions were used to estimate the associations between suicide rates and time zone partitions, adjusting for gender, race, ethnicity, age group, and unemployment rates. RESULTS Data were available for 2872 counties. Across the U.S., western partitions had statistically significantly higher rates of suicide compared to eastern partitions and averaged up to two additional yearly deaths per 100,000 people (p < .001). LIMITATIONS Ecological design and limited adjustment for socioeconomic factors. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first study of the relationship between longitude-based time zone partitions and suicide. The results were consistent with the hypothesized elevated suicide rates in the western partitions, and concordant with previous reports on cancer mortality and transportation fatalities. The next step is to retest the hypothesis with individual-level data, accounting for latitude, photoperiodic changes, daylight-saving time, geoclimatic variables, physical and mental health indicators, as well as socioeconomic adversity and protection.

Abstract
Biological changes contribute to preferences for later bed and wake times during adolescence, yet the social constraints of school start times necessitate early wake times. This often results in social jetlag (i.e. misalignment between preferred sleep timing on weekends and school days). We examined whether social jetlag predicts adolescent internalizing and externalizing behavior over time and/or whether associations differ based on sex. We used data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development Study (n = 767) to test whether social jetlag at 6th grade (ages 12-13 years) predicted internalizing and externalizing behavior at age 15 years and whether child sex moderated associations. Controlling for internalizing and externalizing behavior at 6th grade (ages 12-13 years), results were that social jetlag at 6th grade (ages 12-13 years) predicted more internalizing and externalizing behaviors at age 15 for females, but not males. These findings show that social jetlag during early adolescence confers risk for internalizing and externalizing behavior in females at mid-adolescence. Greater attention should be placed on identifying and addressing social jetlag in adolescent females.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Nonrestorative sleep (NRS) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) are important indicators of daytime dysfunction. Electronic media use before bedtime greatly affects adolescent sleep quality. However, few studies have examined factors associated with these symptoms. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the impact of chronotype, electronic device use before bedtime, and insomnia symptoms on NRS and EDS in Japanese adolescents. METHODS A web-based cross-sectional survey of 2067 adolescents was conducted in 2022 to mainly assess sleep-related issues (sleep duration, chronotype, insomnia symptoms, NRS, and EDS), time spent using electronic devices, physical activity, and mental health. RESULTS We analyzed data of 1880 adolescents (age, 16.4 ± 0.8 years; males, 56.7%). NRS and EDS prevalence rates were 54.9% and 39.4%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, evening chronotype [odds ratio (OR): 2.14, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.58-2.89], difficulty initiating sleep (OR: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.43-2.64), <5 h sleep (OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.24-2.54), 5-6 h sleep (OR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.20-1.93), and using electronic devices just before bedtime (OR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.08-2.04) were associated with NRS. Evening chronotype (OR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.07-1.82), early morning awakening (OR: 1.60, 95% CI: 1.02-2.50), using electronic devices just before bedtime (OR: 2.08, 95% CI: 1.48-2.93), and using electronic devices 30 min before bedtime (OR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.07-2.29) were associated with EDS. CONCLUSION Chronotype may be an important factor influencing NRS and EDS. Discontinuing electronic device use at least 30 min before bedtime could benefit affected adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Social jetlag, a circadian misalignment, has been associated with depressive symptoms in the general and working populations. However, evidence for this association in adolescents is inconsistent. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between social jetlag and depressive symptoms among Japanese adolescents and to evaluate differences by sex. METHODS The participants were 1493 students (13.6 ± 0.9years, 52.4% girls) from five junior high schools. Questionnaires, including demographic information and the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire, were distributed. Social jetlag was defined as the difference between midsleep on weekdays and weekends, and was categorized as <0 hour (negative), 0 to <1 hour, 1 to <2 hours, or ≥2 hours. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Birleson Depression Self-Rating Scale for Children. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio with adjustments for potential confounders, such as puberty- and lifestyle-related factors. RESULTS The distribution of students with <0 hour, 0 to <1 hour, 1 to <2 hours, and ≥2 hours of social jetlag was 9.4%, 37.0%, 33.3%, and 20.4%, respectively. The multivariate-adjusted model revealed that social jetlag ≥2 hours and <0 hour were associated with an elevated risk of depressive symptoms among girls and boys, respectively. These associations were nonlinear for both sexes in restricted cubic spline analyses. CONCLUSIONS Social jetlag is associated with depressive symptoms among adolescents. Specifically, the risk of depressive symptoms increased with positive social jetlag scores for girls and negative social jetlag scores for boys.

Abstract
The chronotype, which reflects the circadian rhythm preferences of individuals in their daily activities and sleep-wake cycles, can be considered on a dimension of extreme morningism and extreme eveningism. Individuals with extreme morning and extreme evening chronotypes face many physical and psychological dangers due to accumulated sleep debt, short total sleep time and insufficient sleep efficiency. In extreme chronotypes, especially in extreme evening people, the social jet-lag effect due to the mismatch between social and circadian clocks is thought to exacerbate these dangers. More recent studies have suggested that social jet-lag and chronotype have many negative effects on cognitive functioning. The aim of this article is to review the impact of social jet-lag and chronotype on cognitive functioning.

Abstract
Chronotype is a reliable biomarker for studying the influence of external zeitgebers on circadian entrainment. Assessment of chronotype variation in participants exposed to extreme photoperiods may be useful to investigate how changes in light-dark cycle modulate the circadian system. This study aimed to examine chronotype and sleep changes during a winter campaign at the Argentine Antarctic station Belgrano II. A sample of 82 men who overwintered in Antarctica completed the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire during March (daylight length: 18.6 h), May (daylight length: 2.8 h), July (daylight length: 0 h), September (daylight length: 14.5 h), November (daylight length: 24 h). The main results showed a decrease in sleep duration and a delay in chronotype and social jetlag during the polar night, highlighting the influence of social cues and the impact of the lack of natural light on circadian rhythms.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To explore the effect of sleep regularity on sleep complaints and mental health conditions (i.e. insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, and depressive symptoms) in a population-based interventional study using a smartphone-based virtual agent. METHODS A populational cohort based on the Kanopée application, which provided interactions with a virtual companion to collect data on sleep and make personalized recommendations to improve sleep over 17 days. A pre-intervention sleep diary and interview were used for cross-sectional analysis (n = 2142), and a post-intervention sleep diary and interview were used for longitudinal analysis (n = 732). The intra-individual mean (IIM) and standard deviation (ISD) of total sleep time (TST) were calculated to measure sleep quantity and sleep regularity. RESULTS The mean age at baseline was 49 years, 65% were female, 72% reported insomnia, 58% fatigue, 36% anxiety, and 17% depressive symptoms. Before the intervention, irregular and short sleep was associated with a higher likelihood of insomnia (Relative risk [RR] = 1.26 [1.21-1.30] for irregular TST and RR = 1.19 [1.15-1.23] for short TST), fatigue, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. After the intervention, the IIM of the TST increased while the ISD of the TST and sleep complaints and mental health conditions decreased. More regular TST was associated with reduced insomnia and depressive symptoms (RR = 1.33 [1.10-1.52] and RR = 1.55 [1.13-1.98], respectively). CONCLUSIONS Our results reveal a longitudinal association between sleep regularity and sleep complaints and mental health conditions. Policymakers, health professionals, and the general population should be aware that, beyond its positive effect on sleep health, regular sleep could promote mental health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare the anthropometric and sleep-wake rhythm characteristics of schoolchildren that attend school in morning and afternoon school shifts. METHODS We recruited 18 481 individuals (females: 56.4%) aged 11 to 18 years old with an average age of 14.4 ± 1.7 years old. In total, 812 (4.2%) questionnaires were incomplete. The self-reported height and weight were used to assess the sex- and age-corrected body mass index of the participants. The Munich ChronoType Questionnaire was used to assess the chronotype, social jetlag, and sleep duration of the participants. RESULTS In total, 12.6% of the participants were affected by overweight or obesity. The overweight and obesity incidence rate was higher among the students studying in the afternoon (odd ratio [95%CI]: 1.33 [1.16-1.52]). The afternoon school shift had a negative impact on the anthropometric indicators only in the 11-14-year-olds (1.29 [1.11-1.50]) and girls (1.26 [1.04-1.54]) with an early (1.27 [1.03-1.56]) and intermediate (1.30 [1.07-1.58]) chronotype. CONCLUSION The data obtained indicated that the afternoon school shift is not ideal, especially for female children and adolescents under 15 years old with an early and intermediate chronotype.

Abstract
Food is an important source of melatonin (MT), which belongs to a group known as chronobiotics, a class of substances that affect the circadian system. Currently, no studies have been conducted on how the consumption of foods containing MT (FMT) is associated with indicators characterizing the human circadian system. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that FMT consumption is associated with chronotype and social jetlag. A total of 1277 schoolchildren and university students aged M (SD) 19.9 (4.1) years (range: 16-25 years; girls: 72.8%) participated in a cross-sectional study. Each participant completed an online questionnaire with their personal data (sex, age, height, weight, waist circumference, and academic performance) and a sequence of tests to assess their sleep-wake rhythm (the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire), sleep quality (the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and depression level (the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale). Study participants also completed a modified food frequency questionnaire that only included foods containing MT (FMT). They were asked how many foods containing MT (FMT) they had eaten for dinner, constituting their daily serving, in the past month. The consumption of foods containing MT (FMT) during the day (FMTday) and at dinner (FMTdinner) was assessed using this test. Multiple regression analyses were performed to assess the association between the studied indicators. We found that higher FMTday values were associated with early chronotype (β = -0.09) and less social jetlag (β = -0.07), better sleep quality (β = -0.06) and lower levels of depression (β = -0.11), as well as central adiposity (β = -0.08). Higher FMTdinner values were associated with a lower risk of central adiposity (β = -0.08). In conclusion, the data obtained confirm the hypothesis that the consumption of foods containing MT (FMT) is associated with chronotype and social jetlag in adolescents and young adults.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to explore the differences in sleep habits and chronotype across different age groups in Mexican adolescents attending a permanent double-shift school system. This cross-sectional study consisted of 1,969 (1,084 girls) students from public elementary, secondary, and high schools, as well as undergraduate university students from Mexico. Age range was 10-22 [15.33 ± 3.28 (mean ± SD)] years, 988 morning shift and 981 afternoon shift students. Questions regarding usual self-reported bedtime and rise time were collected, and from that, estimates for time in bed, midpoint of sleep, social jetlag, and chronotype were evaluated. Afternoon shift students reported later rise times, bedtimes, midpoint of sleep, and longer time in bed on school days than morning shift students, as well as less social jetlag. Overall, afternoon shift students reported a later chronotype than morning shift students. Peak lateness of chronotype in afternoon shift students was at age 15, with girls peaking at age 14 and boys at age 15. Meanwhile, morning shift students reported peak lateness of chronotype around age 20. In this study, adolescents from different age ranges attending an extremely delayed school start time reported adequate sleep compared with adolescents attending a fixed morning school start time. In addition, the analysis presented in this study seems to suggest that the peak of late chronotype may be influenced by school start times.

Abstract
Schools start early in the morning all over the world, contrasting with adolescents' late chronotype. Interestingly, lower academic performance (i.e. grades or qualifications) was associated with later chronotypes. However, it is unclear whether it is a direct effect of chronotype or because students attend school too early to perform at their best. Moreover, little is known about how this affects students' academic success beyond their grades. To address this gap in knowledge, we studied how school timing and chronotype affect grade retention (i.e. repeat a year) in a unique sample of students randomly assigned to one of three different school timings (starting at 07:45, 12:40, or 17:20). Even when controlling for academic performance, we found that later chronotypes exhibit higher odds of grade retention only in the morning, but not in later school timings. Altogether, ensuring a better alignment between school timing and students' biological rhythms might enhance future opportunities of adolescents.

Abstract
Chronotype-the relationship between the internal circadian physiology of an individual and the external 24-h light-dark cycle-is increasingly implicated in mental health and cognition. Individuals presenting with a late chronotype have an increased likelihood of developing depression, and can display reduced cognitive performance during the societal 9-5 day. However, the interplay between physiological rhythms and the brain networks that underpin cognition and mental health is not well-understood. To address this issue, we use rs-fMRI collected from 16 people with an early chronotype and 22 people with a late chronotype over three scanning sessions. We develop a classification framework utilizing the Network Based-Statistic methodology, to understand if differentiable information about chronotype is embedded in functional brain networks and how this changes throughout the day. We find evidence of subnetworks throughout the day that differ between extreme chronotypes such that high accuracy can occur, describe rigorous threshold criteria for achieving 97.3% accuracy in the Evening and investigate how the same conditions hinder accuracy for other scanning sessions. Revealing differences in functional brain networks based on extreme chronotype suggests future avenues of research that may ultimately better characterize the relationship between internal physiology, external perturbations, brain networks, and disease.

Abstract
To investigate the associations between social jetlag and depressive symptoms and further analyze the interaction of social jetlag and chronic diseases on depressive symptoms among adults. Data were derived from a cross-sectional survey. Information on social jetlag, depressive symptoms, demographic characteristics, lifestyles, and health situations were collected via a structured self-administered questionnaire. The multivariable logistic regression analyses and restricted cubic splines regression were performed to test the association between social jetlag and depressive symptoms. The multiplicative model was applied to analyze the interaction of social jetlag and chronic disease on depressive symptoms. A total of 5818 adults were included and the prevalence of social jetlag was 22.95%. After multivariable adjustment, adults who experienced more than 2 hours of social jetlag had a significantly greater risk of depressive symptoms (OR = 1.43,95%CI:1.00-2.05, P = 0.049). Compared with participants having<1 hour of social jetlag and no chronic disease, participants having chronic disease were more likely to report depressive symptoms(OR = 3.22,95%CI = 2.59-4.00, P < 0.001). Moreover, among those who have chronic disease, the greater the social jetlag they reported, the greater risk of depressive symptoms they have (OR = 3.81,95%CI = 2.77-5.33, P < 0.001; OR = 4.08,95%CI = 2.24-7.43, P < 0.001). Social jetlag was linearly associated the with risk of depressive symptoms, according to restricted cubic splines. This study shows that 22.95% adults experience more than 1 hour of social jetlag. Social jetlag was positively associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms. Among those who have chronic disease, the greater the social jetlag they reported, the greater risk of depressive symptoms they have.
