Abstract
This study aimed to compare young soccer players' week and weekend sleep behaviors in two different microcycle types: with and without an official match (no sporting commitments). Twenty-three youth male players (mean ± SD; age: 17.2 ± 0.6 years) from the same U19 soccer team had their sleep objectively monitored for eight weeks. Questionnaires for subjective sleep quality, sleepiness, and to identify individual chronotype were completed at the beginning of the study. External training and match loads were monitored using global positioning systems. Overall, all players slept less than 8 h throughout the study and 16 slept less than 7 h. On weekdays, total sleep time (TST) was reduced (390 ± 60 min). A significant (p < 0.05) main effect of the microcycle type, night of the week, and an interaction between the two were observed for TST, bedtime, and wake-up time, indicating that weekend sleep adjustments were dependent on whether a match was played or not. Specifically, weekends without a match showed higher TST (+34 min, p < 0.001), and later bed and wake-up times (+48 min, p < 0.001; and +1.06 h, p < 0.001; respectively) compared with weekends that included a match. While players seem to try to compensate their week sleep debt when possible, sleep adjustments were more predominant on weekends without a match, despite still relatively short sleep durations observed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Weekend catch-up sleep (WCS) may alleviate weekday sleep deprivation, but its relationship with depression risk remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to explore the association between WCS and depression risk. METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus for observational studies published up to June 1, 2024. Data extraction and bias assessment were independently performed by two reviewers. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated, with model selection based on the I2 statistic. Sensitivity analyses and publication bias tests were also conducted. RESULTS A total of ten cross-sectional studies (326,871 participants) were included. Meta-analysis showed that WCS was significantly associated with a reduced risk of depression (OR = 0.80, 95 % CI: 0.68-0.90). Subgroup analyses showed moderate amounts of WCS (0-2 h) may be protective, but WCS beyond 2 h had limited protective effects against depression. Qualitative analyses showed that the protective effect of WCS against depression was more pronounced in men and middle-aged adults, and was particularly applicable to those who were sleep-deprived on weekdays. LIMITATIONS The cross-sectional design of included studies limits causality inference, and the sample primarily represents populations from the United States and South Korea, potentially affecting generalizability. CONCLUSIONS Moderate WCS is associated with lower depression risk in those with weekday sleep deficits, while excessive WCS may have diminishing or adverse effects. Further research should examine optimal WCS duration and underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Circadian rhythm disruption, commonly caused by factors such as jet lag and shift work, is increasingly recognized as a critical factor impairing wound healing. Although melatonin is known to regulate circadian rhythms and has potential in wound repair, its clinical application is limited by low bioavailability. To address these challenges, we developed an alginate-based dual-network hydrogel as a delivery system for melatonin, ensuring its stable and sustained release at the wound site. This approach enhances the efficacy of melatonin in modulating the wound healing process. We investigated the effects of circadian rhythm disruption on the wound microenvironment under the influence of the melatonin-loaded hydrogel with a focus on its biocompatibility, hemostatic properties, and antioxidant response functions. Additionally, we elucidated the mechanisms by which the melatonin-loaded hydrogel system promotes wound healing. Our findings provide insights into the relationship between circadian rhythm disruption and wound healing, offering a promising strategy for the management of chronic wounds associated with circadian rhythm disorders.

Abstract
Background Hypertension is a prevalent cardiovascular risk factor that significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Previous studies have highlighted the role of inadequate sleep during weekdays in the development of hypertension. However, the potential mitigative effects of weekend catch-up sleep (WCS) on hypertension have been less explored. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2020, focusing on American adults. We assessed the association between WCS (defined as the difference in sleep duration between weekend and weekday) and the presence of hypertension. Participants were classified into two groups based on their WCS duration: none (below 1 hours), yes (over 1 hours). Multivariable logistic regression models adjusted for potential confounders such as age, gender, Body mass index (BMI), and lifestyle factors were utilized to explore this association. A Generalized Additive Model (GAM) was employed to generate smooth curves for a nuanced analysis of the nonlinear relationship. Results The findings indicated that moderate WCS (less than 4 hours) was significantly associated with a reduced risk of hypertension, while excessive WCS (greater than 4 hours) showed no significant protective benefits. Conclusion Moderate weekend catch-up sleep could serve as an effective intervention to mitigate hypertension risk, especially in populations with restricted weekday sleep. These results suggest the potential for integrating sleep management strategies into public health recommendations to address hypertension. Future longitudinal studies are needed to confirm these findings and clarify the mechanisms underlying the relationship between WCS and hypertension risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Social jetlag is a disturbance in the circadian rhythm caused by a desynchronization between an individual's biological rhythm and social commitments and responsibilities. It leads to sleep debt during the week and compensation on weekends. Social jetlag is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases and cognitive dysfunction in adolescents. This study aims to assess the prevalence of social jetlag and associated factors in Brazilian adolescents. METHODS Adolescents of both sexes, aged between 12 and 17years, participating in the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA), were included. The sleep duration on a typical weekday and weekend day was collected through a self-reported questionnaire. The occurrence of social jetlag was defined as the difference between the midpoint of sleep on weekends and weekdays, with differences equal to or higher than 1hour considered as an indicator of positive social jetlag. Factors associated with the prevalence of social jetlag were investigated using Poisson regression models. RESULTS The sample included a total of 64,029 adolescents. Social jetlag affects more than 80% of Brazilian adolescents, with higher prevalence among girls in the age group of 16-17years, with white skin color, attending private schools, and those having morning classes. Additionally, unhealthy risk behaviors such as skipping breakfast, alcohol consumption, and increased screen time are associated with a higher prevalence of social jetlag. CONCLUSION The prevalence of social jetlag was high in Brazilian adolescents, and, among its associated factors, studying in the morning shift and engaging in unhealthy risk behaviors stand out.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Social jetlag (SJL), which arises from the misalignment of biological and social rhythms, is associated with adverse health outcomes. We explored the association between SJL and anxiety symptoms in Korean workers. METHODS This cross-sectional study included a nationally representative sample, consisting of 2731 adult workers. SJL was calculated as the absolute difference in the midpoint between sleep onset and offset times on workdays and free days. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale was used to assess anxiety symptoms. Logistic regressions were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Among the sample, 66.5 % individuals had 0-59 min of SJL, 22.6 % had 60-119 min of SJL, and 10.9 % had ≥120 min of SJL. The prevalence of anxiety symptoms was 3.4 % for those with 0-59 min of SJL, 3.2 % for those with 60-119 min of SJL, and 7.7 % for those with ≥120 min of SJL. Workers with ≥120 min of SJL, compared with those with 0-59 min of SJL, were associated with an increase in the odds of having anxiety symptoms (OR:2.04, 95 % CI:1.10-3.78). A 1-h increase in SJL is associated with a 1.35-fold increase in the odds of anxiety symptoms (95 % CI:1.04-1.75). This positive association remained robust after adjusting for the effect of sleep deprivation using a sleep-corrected formula. CONCLUSION ≥2 h of SJL is associated with anxiety symptoms in Korean workers. Policy measures are required to mitigate excess SJL and monitor the mental health of workers with high SJL levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Behavioral jet lags (social and eating jet lag), the difference in sleep and eating time between weekdays and weekends, are ubiquitous in modern society. However, evidence on the effects of behavioral jet lags on circadian rhythm is limited. METHODS Social jet lag was assessed using wrist-worn accelerometers. Eating jet lag was measured through Tencent online form with the method of ecological momentary assessment. Total jet lag was calculated as social jet lag plus eating jet lag. Participants were divided into 3 behavioral jet lag patterns: low (both social and eating jet lag < 1h), medium (social or eating jet lag ≥ 1h), and high (both social and eating jet lag ≥ 1h). Subjective and objective circadian rhythm were assessed by reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ)-based chronotype and the dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) time in 7 saliva samples, respectively. RESULTS The mean age of the sample (n = 140) was 20.7 ± 0.8 years, and 60% were women. Compared to low behavioral jet lag group, medium and high behavioral jet lag group exhibited lower rMEQ score and later DLMO time. Each hour increase in social jet lag was associated with 2.27 point-decrease of rMEQ score, and 24 min-delay of DLMO time; each hour increase in eating jet lag was associated with 1.71 point-decrease of rMEQ score, and 28 min-delay of DLMO time; each hour increase in total jet lag was associated with 1.08 point-decrease of rMEQ score, and 17 min-delay of DLMO time (all P-values <0.05). Additionally, social jet lag explained 6.7% of the variance in the timing of DLMO, which was higher than eating jet lag (4.2%). CONCLUSION Higher behavioral jet lags were significantly associated with increased risk of circadian disruption among young adults. Maintaining consistency in daily behavioral cycles may be an effective intervention for the prevention of circadian disruption.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate which factors, including socioenvironmental factors and emotional regulation, were associated with pronounced delayed sleep patterns during the COVID-19 social restriction. We evaluated 744 adults aged 20-65 y using a web-based survey with a self-reported questionnaire in May 2022. Based on the survey, we estimated the mid-sleep time on free days corrected for oversleeping on free days (MSFsc) and social jet lag (SJL). We determined delayed sleep patterns using ΔMSFsc, which was defined as the difference between MSFsc during the pre- and mid-pandemic. The high-risk group for delayed sleep patterns (H-DSP) group was younger with evening person and had more severe insomnia, depression with rumination, and smartphone addiction (p < 0.05). Logistic regression revealed that stronger tendencies to express emotions and rumination were independent risk factors associated with a pronounced pattern of delayed sleep during the pandemic. In the H-DPS group, SJL increased even more during the pandemic. In socially restricted environments, emotion regulation significantly affects the severity of delayed sleep patterns, and people with H-DSP also had more disrupted circadian rhythms. Therefore, active education of sleep hygiene and emotional support with psychological interventions are needed in socially restricted environments.

Abstract
Wearable devices have gained increasing attention for use in multifunctional applications related to health monitoring, particularly in research of the circadian rhythms of cognitive functions and metabolic processes. In this comprehensive review, we encompass how wearables can be used to study circadian rhythms in health and disease. We highlight the importance of these rhythms as markers of health and well-being and as potential predictors for health outcomes. We focus on the use of wearable technologies in sleep research, circadian medicine, and chronomedicine beyond the circadian domain and emphasize actigraphy as a validated tool for monitoring sleep, activity, and light exposure. We discuss various mathematical methods currently used to analyze actigraphic data, such as parametric and non-parametric approaches, linear, non-linear, and neural network-based methods applied to quantify circadian and non-circadian variability. We also introduce novel actigraphy-derived markers, which can be used as personalized proxies of health status, assisting in discriminating between health and disease, offering insights into neurobehavioral and metabolic status. We discuss how lifestyle factors such as physical activity and light exposure can modulate brain functions and metabolic health. We emphasize the importance of establishing reference standards for actigraphic measures to further refine data interpretation and improve clinical and research outcomes. The review calls for further research to refine existing tools and methods, deepen our understanding of circadian health, and develop personalized healthcare strategies.

Abstract
Sleep deficiency is associated with infectious disease risk. However, little is known about the individual roles of different aspects of sleep, including sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep timing (assessed by chronotype) and sleep regularity (in the form of social jet lag) in this context. Here, we examined associations of the probability of reporting a cold or other infections with self-reported sleep duration, sleep quality and chronotype in a sample of 642 adults, and with social jet lag in a subsample of 274 adults. We found that short (≤ 6 h) and long sleepers (≥ 9 h) were more likely to report a cold in the past 30 days than average sleepers (7-8 h). Also, individuals with a definite evening chronotype were more likely to report a cold in the past 30 days than those with an intermediate chronotype, even when controlling for sleep duration. Finally, social jet lag was dose-dependently associated with the risk of reporting a cold in the past 12 months, independently of sleep duration, sleep quality and chronotype. No associations were found with sleep quality or with infections other than colds. The findings show that different aspects of sleep are independently associated with incidence of reported colds.This article is part of the Theo Murphy meeting issue 'Circadian rhythms in infection and immunity'.

Abstract
Chronobiology is a multidisciplinary field that extends across the tree of life, transcends all scales of biological organization, and has huge translational potential. For the UK to harness the opportunities presented within applied chronobiology, we need to build our network outwards to reach stakeholders that can directly benefit from our discoveries. In this article, we discuss the importance of biological rhythms to our health, society, economy and environment, with a particular focus on circadian rhythms. We subsequently introduce the vision and objectives of BioClocks UK, a newly formed research network, whose mission is to stimulate researcher interactions and sustain discovery-impact cycles between chronobiologists, wider research communities and multiple industry sectors.This article is part of the Theo Murphy meeting issue 'Circadian rhythms in infection and immunity'.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The circadian timing system regulates diurnal sleep-wake rhythm. Previously, we showed that, in patients undergoing elective surgery, sleep-wake timing is altered and post-operative sleep quality is reduced. However, how the timing of the surgical procedure affects the disturbance and what other factors affect this disturbance remain unknown. METHODS Single-centre prospective observational study investigating the influence of surgery timing on post-operative sleep in adult patients (≥18 years) undergoing elective surgery. Sleep-wake timing was measured from three nights before until seven nights after surgery with a daily sleeping log. Primary outcome was post-operative midpoint of sleep shift between patients undergoing morning and afternoon surgeries. Secondary outcomes included factors affecting sleep timing disturbance and changes in subjective sleep quality. RESULTS We included 259 patients: 144 patients underwent morning procedures (08:00 h-12:00 h) and 115 underwent afternoon procedures (12:00 h-17:00 h). Both groups had significant phase advance of midpoint of sleep on the night after surgery when compared with three nights before surgery (mean - 00:41 h, 95% CI -00:27 h to -00:54 h, p < .001, for morning surgery and mean - 00:28 h, 95% CI -00:09 h to -00:46 h, p = .003, for afternoon surgery). However, there was no between-group difference (mean - 00:13 h, 95% CI -00:35 h-00:09 h, p = .25). Reduction of sleep quality was also similar. Phase advance was larger for patients with an evening chronotype or with lower pre-operative sleep quality. Decline of sleep quality after surgery was larger for patients with an evening chronotype, longer procedures or better pre-operative sleep quality. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that the timing of surgery between 08:00 h and 17:00 h does not modulate the effect of anaesthesia and surgery on phase of the sleep-wake rhythm in patients undergoing elective surgery with a low pre-operative risk of delirium. EDITORIAL COMMENT Timing of surgery may impact post-operative sleep. However, in this prospective cohort study of elective surgical patients, sleep-wake timing and post-operative sleep quality did not differ between those undergoing morning versus afternoon surgery.

Abstract
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death and the most common cancer among women worldwide. It is crucial to identify potentially modifiable risk factors to intervene and prevent breast cancer effectively. Sleep factors have emerged as a potentially novel risk factor for female breast cancer. Current epidemiologic studies suggest a significant impact of sleep factors on breast cancer. Exposure to abnormal sleep duration, poor sleep quality, sleep disorders, sleep medication use, or night shift work can increase the risk of breast cancer by decreasing melatonin secretion, disrupting circadian rhythm, compromising immune function, or altering hormone levels. However, there are still controversies regarding the epidemiologic association, and the underlying mechanisms have yet to be fully elucidated. This paper summarizes the epidemiologic evidence on the associations between sleep factors, including sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep disorders, sleep medication use, sleep habits, and night shift work, and the development of breast cancer. The potential mechanisms underlying these associations were also reviewed.

Abstract
We investigated the influence of chronotype on eating habits among adolescents attending schools with morning (07:00 hours-12:00 hours) or afternoon (13:00 hours-18:00 hours) shifts, hypothesizing that incompatibility of study schedules may be related to dietary choices. In this cross-sectional study, 734 adolescents (aged 14-19 years) completed an online questionnaire covering eating habits, chronotype, sleep duration, social jet lag, socioeconomic data, physical activity and anthropometric measures. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were estimated using adjusted logistic regression, stratified by study shift. In the morning shift, a morning chronotype was associated with higher odds of breakfast (odds ratio: 3.47; 95% confidence interval: 1.13-10.71) compared with an evening chronotype. Both morning and intermediate chronotypes were associated with higher odds of morning snack (odds ratio: 3.52; 95% confidence interval: 1.13-10.93; and odds ratio: 2.87; 95% confidence interval: 1.18-6.99) and lower odds of fast foods (odds ratio: 0.09; 95% confidence interval: 0.02-0.49; and odds ratio: 0.19; 95% confidence interval: 0.58-0.62). In the afternoon shift, a morning chronotype was associated with higher odds of breakfast (odds ratio: 5.22; 95% confidence interval: 1.85-14.72), beans (odds ratio: 3.57; 95% confidence interval: 1.19-10.74), vegetables (odds ratio: 3.52; 95% confidence interval: 1.28-9.69) and fruits (odds ratio: 4.50; 95% confidence interval: 1.55-13.07) compared with an evening chronotype. Intermediate chronotype was associated with higher odds of breakfast (odds ratio: 3.71; 95% confidence interval: 2.03-6.77), morning snacks (odds ratio: 2.45; 95% confidence interval: 1.09-5.50), vegetables (odds ratio: 1.92; 95% confidence interval: 1.03-3.58) and fruits (odds ratio: 2.50; 95% confidence interval: 1.27-4.89), and lower odds of high-energy intake post-dinner (odds ratio: 0.43; 95% confidence interval: 0.22-0.85). Adolescents with an evening chronotype had lower odds of having breakfast. Both chronotype and study shifts influenced specific food consumption habits.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study aimed at exploring the association between eveningness and lifestyle-related variables, that is, body mass index, alcohol, and cigarette consumption, in adults (18-40years), focusing on the possible moderator effect of age and the role of sleep disturbances and circadian misalignment (social jetlag). METHODS A web-based survey was administered to 437 participants, covering demographics, lifestyle-related variables, chronotype, sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness. A subset of 206 participants wore a wrist actigraph for a week, allowing the creation of a sleep health index within the RU-SATED framework. Regression analysis was used to investigate the associations between chronotype and lifestyle-related outcomes, accounting for social jetlag and sleep health; and to explore the lifestyle trajectories over time. RESULTS Evening chronotypes showed higher body mass index levels, consumed more alcohol, and smoked more cigarettes than other circadian typologies, in particular after 25 years of age. Poor sleep health and social jetlag significantly contribute to explaining evening types smoking behavior, while not affecting body mass index levels. Social jetlag plays a more important role compared to sleep disturbances and eveningness in predicting more detrimental drinking and smoking behavior. CONCLUSIONS Participants who maintain the evening trait past the age of 25years are more prone to adopt an unhealthy lifestyle, especially if experiencing poor sleep health and circadian misalignment. Circadian preferences and sleep health should be considered when planning interventions aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles in adults aged 18-40years. Further investigations should explore the effect of modifications in lifestyle in the prevention of noncommunicable diseases.

Abstract
Elite athletes are vulnerable to sleep and circadian disruption and associated mental health symptoms. This study aimed to investigate sex differences in sleep, circadian rhythms, and mental health, as well as the moderating role of sex in the prediction of mental health, among male professional and female semi-professional elite athletes. Participants were 87 elite Australian Rules football (ARF) athletes (43% female; mean [standard deviation] age 24.0 [4.1] years). Participants completed baseline questionnaires, 2 weeks of sleep/wake monitoring via actigraphy, and a circadian phase assessment (dim-light melatonin onset [DLMO]). Cross-sectional data were collected in training-only Australian Football League (AFL) Men's and Women's pre-season periods, with 53 providing data in two pre-seasons. Female athletes, relative to males, reported poorer mental health (a higher athlete psychological strain score), had a later mid-sleep time (by 28 min), reported a greater preference towards eveningness, and displayed a later circadian phase (by 33 min). For female athletes, lower sleep efficiency and lower sleep regularity were associated with poorer mental health. For female athletes, there were U-shaped relationships between both morningness-eveningness and phase angle (interval between sleep onset and DLMO time) and mental health. No significant relationships were found for male athletes. In summary, elite female ARF athletes reported poorer mental health, relative to males, especially when experiencing sleep or circadian disruption. Lifestyle factors associated with sex differences in ARF professionalism (scheduling, finances, supports) may contribute to these findings. Programmes to improve sleep, circadian alignment, and mental health among female semi-professional elite athletes should be strongly considered.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Social jetlag, which refers to the misalignment between biological rhythms and social schedule, is linked to an increased risk of metabolic diseases. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between social jetlag and workers' dietary quality. Methods: This secondary data analysis included a sample of workers from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n = 11,430). Social jetlag was determined by calculating the difference in the sleep midpoint between free days and workdays, based on sleep onset and offset times. The Korean Health Eating Index (KHEI) was calculated based on 24-h recalls, with higher scores indicating superior dietary qualities (range: 0-100). Poor dietary quality was defined as a KHEI below the lowest quartile (<51.6). Linear or logistic regressions were utilized to estimate β or odds ratio (OR), respectively. Results: Among study participants, 12.1% of workers experienced ≥120 min of social jetlag. ≥120 min of social jetlag was associated with a reduced KHEI score compared with 0-59 min (β: -1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -2.16, -0.30). Those with ≥120 min of social jetlag were more likely to have poor dietary quality than those with 0-59 min (OR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.50). Conclusions: Workers experiencing ≥120 min of social jetlag had poorer dietary quality compared with workers with 0-59 min of social jetlag. Therefore, this study suggests that policy efforts are needed to reduce social jetlag among workers in Korea.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxiety disorders significantly impair the quality of life (QOL). Studies on the effect of sleep duration, chronotype, and social jet lag on anxiety disorders are limited. This study aimed to elucidate the contributions of sleep duration, chronotype, and social jet lag to the prevalence and severity of anxiety disorders in Koreans. METHODS This study used data of 9,874 Korean adults from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2021-2022. Anxiety was assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale, and health-related QOL was measured using the Health-Related Quality of Life Instrument with 8-Items. Complex sample logistic regression models were used to evaluate the associations between sleep duration, chronotype, and social jet lag and anxiety disorders, with analyses stratified by sex. RESULTS Sleep duration of <6 h, evening chronotype, and social jet lag of >2 h were significantly associated with a high prevalence of anxiety disorders in women; however, in men, only sleep duration of <6 h was associated with anxiety disorders. Sleep duration of <6 h and evening chronotype were associated with low QOL in women but not in men. CONCLUSION This study highlights the importance of adequate sleep and circadian alignment for mental health, particularly in women. Public health initiatives should focus on promoting healthy sleep habits to improve mental health and QOL. Further research is required to understand the causal pathways and sex-specific mechanisms underlying these associations.

Abstract
To investigate the status of social jet lag (SJL) through sociodemographic factors among clinical nurses and examine the correlation with burnout. There has been relatively little research on the possible factors resulting in SJL among nurses in China and its role in burnout. A multicenter cross-sectional study recruited 596 nurses from 7 Chinese hospitals. Online questionnaires were delivered to assess sociodemographics, shift work, SJL, chronotypes, and the burnout of nurses. Nurses had severe levels of SJL. The number of children, forms of employment, specialty area, length of professional service, and chronotypes were the main predictors of SJL. Moreover, SJL affected burnout (emotional exhaustion and deindividuation), and reducing the nurses' SJL could relieve their burnout. Additional evidence-based interventions indicate that reducing the SJL is essential as the nurses are suffering severe job burnout.

Abstract
Sleep is crucial for children's health and eating habits. The decline in family meals has raised concerns about its impact on children. Previous research indicated associations between family meals and psychological health and dietary habits, but their relationship with sleep behavior is less understood. This study examined the association between family meals (breakfast and dinner), sleep patterns, and quality of life among Japanese preschoolers and elementary school students (1st to 3rd grade). The cross-sectional study involved 6,177 children aged 3-8 years in Japan. Mothers completed an online survey on family meal habits, sleep patterns, and the KINDL-R questionnaire to assess quality of life. Results showed that family meals were associated with sleep behaviors and KINDL scores. Multiple regression analysis indicated that family breakfast was associated with earlier bedtime and wake-up time, shorter weekend sleep duration, reduced social jet lag, and a morning chronotype, as detected by the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire. Family dinners were linked to later sleep and wake-up times and an evening chronotype. Family breakfast and dinner were associated with higher KINDL scores, with dinner having a stronger positive impact. These findings underscore the significance of family meals in associating sleep patterns and quality of life among Japanese children.

Abstract
The circadian system plays a crucial role in regulating metabolic homeostasis at both systemic and tissue levels by synchronizing the central and peripheral clocks with exogenous time cues, known as zeitgebers (such as the light/dark cycle). Our body's behavioral rhythms, including sleep-wake cycles and feeding-fasting patterns, align with these extrinsic time cues. The body cannot effectively rest and repair itself when circadian rhythms are frequently disrupted. In many shift workers, the internal rhythms fail to fully synchronize with the end and start times of their shifts. Additionally, exposure to artificial light at night (LAN), irregular eating patterns, and sleep deprivation contribute to circadian disruption and misalignment. Shift work and jet lag disrupt the normal circadian rhythm of liver activity, resulting in a condition known as "circadian disruption". This disturbance adversely affects the metabolism and homeostasis of the liver, contributing to excessive fat accumulation and abnormal liver function. Additionally, extended working hours, such as prolonged night shifts, may worsen the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) toward non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and increase disease severity. Studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between night shift work (NSW) and elevated liver enzymes, indicative of hepatic metabolic dysfunction, potentially increasing the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) related to NAFLD. This review consolidates research findings on circadian disruption caused by NSW, late chronotype, jet lag, and social jet lag, drawing insights from studies involving both humans and animal models that investigate the effects of these factors on circadian rhythms in liver metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A mismatch between biological and social time, often referred to as social jetlag (SJL), can lead to inadequate sleep and activities or taking meals at times that do not align with our biological rhythms, increasing the risk of metabolic abnormalities. Although the association between sleep and metabolic syndrome (MetS) is well established, the effects of SJL on MetS and the components of MetS in adults remain unclear. PURPOSE This study was designed to explore the relationship between SJL and MetS components in adults. METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted on studies registered in PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Embase between the inception of each database until November 15, 2023. We focused on studies designed to evaluate the relationship between SJL and either MetS or its components. Only studies using cross-sectional, prospective, or retrospective designs were considered for inclusion. The relationship between SJL and MetS was depicted as an odds ratio with a corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). We determined the mean differences and 95% CIs to estimate the associations between SJL and MetS components. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist was used to evaluate the methodological rigor of the selected studies. Data were analyzed using RevMan software Version 5.4. RESULTS The systematic review included 16 studies, with five analyzed via a meta-analysis covering four outcomes, each based on two to three studies. When comparing SJL of less than 1 hour with SJL of 2 hours or more, the latter showed a higher likelihood of MetS (pooled odds ratio: 1.52). Although a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure (pooled mean differences = -3.52 mmHg, 95% CI [-6.41, -0.64]) and a significant increase in waist circumference (pooled mean differences = 2.17 cm, 95% CI [0.61, 3.73]) were observed, the correlation between SJL and diastolic blood pressure failed to reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The meta-analysis conducted in this study found an association between SJL and MetS. Healthcare practitioners should prioritize the management of sleep quality and duration, especially for individuals exhibiting substantial SJL. Improving sleep can aid in controlling blood pressure and managing weight and should form part of MetS management strategies.

Abstract
Substance use disorder is a major global health concern, with a high prevalence among adolescents and young adults. The most common substances of abuse include alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, nicotine, and opiates. Evidence suggests that a mismatch between contemporary lifestyle and environmental demands leads to disrupted circadian rhythms that impair optimal physiological and behavioral function, which can increase the vulnerability to develop substance use disorder and related problems. The circadian system plays an important role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle and reward processing, both of which directly affect substance abuse. Distorted substance use can have a reciprocal effect on the circadian system by influencing circadian clock gene expression. Considering the detrimental health consequences and profound societal impact of substance use disorder, it is crucial to comprehend its complex association with circadian rhythms, which can pave the way for the generation of novel chronotherapeutic treatment approaches. In this narrative review, we have explored the potential contributions of disrupted circadian rhythms and sleep on use and relapse of different substances of abuse. The involvement of circadian clock genes with drug reward pathways is discussed, along with the potential research areas that can be explored to minimize disordered substance use by improving circadian hygiene.

Abstract
Purpose Wearable or non-contact, non-intrusive devices present a practical alternative to traditional polysomnography (PSG) for daily assessment of sleep quality. Physiological signals have been known to be nonlinear and nonstationary as the body adapts to states of rest or activity. By integrating more sophisticated nonlinear methodologies, the accuracy of sleep stage identification using such devices can be improved. This advancement enables individuals to monitor and adjust their sleep patterns more effectively without visiting sleep clinics. Patients and Methods Six participants slept for three cycles of at least three hours each, wearing PSG as a reference, along with an Apple Watch, an actigraphy device, and a ballistocardiography (BCG) bed sensor. The physiological signals were processed with nonlinear methods and trained with a long short-term memory (LSTM) model to classify sleep stages. Nonlinear methods, such as return maps with advanced techniques to analyze the shape and asymmetry in physiological signals, were used to relate these signals to the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The changing dynamics of cardiac signals in restful or active states, regulated by the ANS, were associated with sleep stages and quality, which were measurable. Results Approximately 73% agreement was obtained by comparing the combination of the BCG and Apple Watch signals against a PSG reference system to classify rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep stages. Conclusion Utilizing nonlinear methods to evaluate cardiac dynamics showed an improved sleep quality detection with the non-intrusive devices in this study. A system of non-intrusive devices can provide a comprehensive outlook on health by regularly measuring sleeping patterns and quality over time, offering a relatively accessible method for participants. Additionally, a non-intrusive system can be integrated into a user's or clinic's bedroom environment to measure and evaluate sleep quality without negatively impacting sleep. Devices placed around the bedroom could measure user vitals over longer periods with minimal interaction from the user, representing their natural sleeping trends for more accurate health and sleep disorder diagnosis.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the relationship between shift-working nurses' social jetlag and body mass index (BMI) and provide a theoretical basis for nursing managers to develop appropriate health interventions. Shift work is unavoidable in nursing and is associated with circadian rhythm disorders. Social jetlag is prevalent in shift-working nurses and is associated with adverse health outcomes (particularly metabolism-related indicators). BMI is a significant metabolic indicator, and research has demonstrated its effectiveness in predicting the formation of metabolic syndrome. The relationship between social jetlag and BMI can be explained by considering physiological, psychological, and behavioral factors. However, most studies on social jetlag and health status are focused on non-shift nurse populations, with fewer studies on shift workers. Five tertiary hospitals located at similar latitudes in Southwest China were selected for the study. We surveyed 429 shift-working nurses using sociodemographic data, the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire for Shift Workers, and BMI. The restricted cubic spline model was used to analyze the relationship between social jetlag and BMI among shift-working nurses, and segmented linear regression was performed around the inflection point using multiple linear regression analysis. The results revealed that social jetlag (82.0 [85.0] min) was experienced by 64.6% of the shift-working nurses. After controlling for confounding variables, the model with seven knots had the lowest accepted Akaike information criterion value, and there was a U-shaped relationship between shift-working nurses' BMI and social jetlag in this model; its inflection (lowest) point of 20.7 was considered the cut-off point. Segmented regression showed that for BMI < 20.7, BMI was significantly negative with standardized social jetlag; whereas with BMI > 20.7, BMI was significantly positive with standardized social jetlag. BMI has a U-shaped relationship with social jetlag, and attention should be paid to overweight or underweight shift-working nurses to detect early circadian rhythm disorder. Shift-working nurses with high social jetlag tended to have higher/lower BMI, which should be further investigated in the future, to minimize metabolic diseases among them.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social jetlag is a chronic disruption of sleep timing that is characterized by different sleep timing during workdays and free days. Social jetlag has been associated with disturbed glucose metabolism, insulin resistance, and increased risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. In this study, we aim to investigate whether a combination of bright light therapy in the morning, bright light reduction in the evening and sleep advance instructions for 3 weeks reduces social jetlag and if this results in improvement of glycemic and metabolic control, sleep, mood and quality of life after 3 and 12 weeks in people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and to assess possible mediators, compared to regular sleep habits. METHODS In this randomized controlled trial, 60 people with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes with > 1 h social jetlag will be recruited. The intervention consists of bright light therapy (5000 lx) emitted by Vitamine-L (Lumie, UK) for 30 min each morning, combined with the advice to follow sleep advance instructions and to wear bright light-dimming goggles every evening for a period of 3 weeks. The control group adheres to their regular sleep habits and conditions. The primary outcome is glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) after 12 weeks comparing the intervention and control in an intention-to-treat analysis. Secondary outcomes at 3 and 12 weeks are (1) social jetlag; (2) insulin sensitivity, fasting blood glucose, glucose-lowering medication use, and frequency of perceived hypoglycemia; (3) metabolic outcomes, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, body fat percentage, and blood pressure; (4) mood, including depression, fatigue and anxiety (measured with questionnaires); and (5) quality of life measured using EQ5D questionnaire. To assess other factors that might play a role as possible mediators, we will measure (para)sympathetic nervous system activity assessed with ECGs and electrochemical skin conductance tests, sleep quality and sleep phase distribution assessed with a sleep measuring headband (ZMax), the Dim Light Melatonin Onset in saliva samples (in a subgroup) at 3 and 12 weeks, the feeling of satiety and satiation with a 10-cm visual analog scale (VAS), diet using a food frequency questionnaire, and physical activity using an accelerometer (ActiGraph). DISCUSSION Social jetlag can contribute to poorer glycemic control and metabolic control in those with type 2 diabetes. With this intervention, we aim to reduce social jetlag and thereby improve glycemic and metabolic control. This could offer a way to improve overall population health and to reduce the disease burden of type 2 diabetes. TRIAL REGISTRATION ISRCTN registry ISRCTN11967109 . Registered on 9 May 2024.

Abstract
Importance Misaligned dietary rhythmicity has been associated with metabolic diseases; however, its association with mental health remains largely unexplored. Objective To examine the association between dietary rhythms and the mental health condition of shift workers, specifically airline crew members. Design, Setting, and Participants This cross-sectional study analyzed data collected from the Civil Aviation Health Cohort of China, an ongoing large-scale health survey of pilots, flight attendants, and air security officers employed by major airline companies in China. Participants aged 18 to 60 years were invited through text messages to complete a web-based survey. The data collection period was December 2022 to March 2023. Statistical analysis was performed from July 24, 2023, to April 12, 2024. Exposure Data on timing of breakfast and dinner on workdays and rest days, daily time windows for food intake, and meal and eating jet lags were collected and calculated. Main Outcomes and Measures Anxiety and depressive symptoms were measured using the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment and the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regressions were performed to evaluate the associations of anxiety and depression with meal timing, eating window time, meal jet lag (ie, delayed meals), and eating jet lag (ie, delayed eating). All models were adjusted for individual socioeconomic, demographic, and lifestyle characteristics. Results Of the 22 617 participants (median [IQR] age, 29.1 [26.3-33.7] years; 13 712 males [60.6%]), 1755 (7.8%) had anxiety and 2768 (12.2%) had depression. After controlling for confounding factors, having dinner after 8 pm on morning-shift days was associated with increased odds of anxiety (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.78; 95% CI, 1.53-2.05) and depression (AOR, 2.01; 95% CI, 1.78-2.27), compared with consuming dinner before 8 pm. Similar results were observed on night-shift days and rest days. An eating window of less than 12 hours was associated with reduced odds of anxiety (AOR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.75-0.93) and depression (AOR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.75-0.89) on morning-shift days; the results remained significant on rest days. Delayed dinner on morning-shift days was associated with increased odds of anxiety (AOR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.13-1.54) and depression (AOR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.22-1.58). On night-shift days, delayed dinner was associated with higher odds of anxiety (AOR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.06-1.39) and depression (AOR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.08-1.36). On morning-shift days, delayed eating rhythms were associated with higher odds of depression (AOR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.13-1.61), whereas advanced eating rhythms were associated with lower odds of anxiety (AOR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.70-0.87). Conclusions and Relevance This cross-sectional study found that meal timing, long eating window, and meal jet lags were associated with increased odds of depression and anxiety. These findings underscore the need for interventions and supportive policies that help mitigate the adverse implications of shift work and irregular working hours for the mental health of shift workers.

Abstract
PURPOSE To pilot a novel approach investigating the interplay of social and institutional determinants influencing university undergraduate student sleep patterns. DESIGN A two-part, three-phase mixed-methods approach. SETTING A mid-size US university conducted in spring and fall 2020. PARTICIPANTS 191 undergraduate students (69 first-years, 43 second-years, 48 third-years, 31 fourth-years). METHOD For Part A, participants texted their activities and emotions in real time, producing a data-rich, weeklong diary of comprehensive activity logs, emoticons, multimedia submissions, and juxtapositions of ideal vs real schedules. Semi-structured contextual interviews were also conducted. For Part B, a one-time survey examined Part A insights across all class years. These diverse datasets were triangulated using thematic, comparative, and content analyses through MAXQDA software and visual mapping methods. RESULTS Three preliminary themes were identified as encouraging an irregular sleep schedule: a prevailing academic ethos emphasizing busyness, time management challenges, and the rhythm of institutional schedules and deadlines. An overarching theme suggests that perceptions of peer sleep habits and academic prioritization above all else could be influential across factors. CONCLUSION This pilot study indicates that sleep regularity among undergraduates is potentially shaped by individual choices combined with broader institutional paradigms. While it is limited by its exploratory nature, timing, and small sample size, the results highlight the promise of this methodology for more extensive studies and suggest that future interventions should emphasize systemic changes that prioritize sleep.

Abstract
Patients with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder, often display abnormal circadian rhythms. The role of the circadian system in these disorders has gained considerable attention over the last decades. Yet, it remains largely unknown how these disruptions occur and to what extent they contribute to the disorders' development. In this review, we examine circadian system dysregulation as observed in patients and animal models of neurodevelopmental disorders. Second, we explore whether circadian rhythm disruptions constitute a risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders from studies in humans and model organisms. Lastly, we focus on the impact of psychiatric medications on circadian rhythms and the potential benefits of chronotherapy. The literature reveals that patients with neurodevelopmental disorders display altered sleep-wake cycles and melatonin rhythms/levels in a heterogeneous manner, and model organisms used to study these disorders appear to support that circadian dysfunction may be an inherent characteristic of neurodevelopmental disorders. Furthermore, the pre-clinical and clinical evidence indicates that circadian disruption at the environmental and genetic levels may contribute to the behavioural changes observed in these disorders. Finally, studies suggest that psychiatric medications, particularly those prescribed for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia, can have direct effects on the circadian system and that chronotherapy may be leveraged to offset some of these side effects. This review highlights that circadian system dysfunction is likely a core pathological feature of neurodevelopmental disorders and that further research is required to elucidate this relationship.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social jetlag, the misalignment between biological and social rhythms, can lead to adverse health outcomes. This study explored the association between social jetlag and hazardous alcohol consumption, as well as the sex differences in this association. METHODS This study included a nationally representative sample of Korean workers consisting of 11,462 individuals (5479 women). Social jetlag was calculated as the difference in the mid-point between sleep onset and offset on free days and workdays. Hazardous alcohol consumption was determined using the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-Consumption (range 0-12), with a cutoff of ≥6 for men, ≥5 for women, and ≥3 for those aged ≥65. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Among men, 599 out of 5983 individuals (10.0 %) had ≥120 min of social jetlag. Among women, 550 out of 5479 individuals (10.0 %) had ≥120 min of social jetlag. The prevalence of hazardous alcohol use was 56.2 % for men and 27.3 % for women. In the regression analysis, there was a significant sex interaction, where social jetlag ≥120 min was associated with hazardous alcohol consumption in female workers (OR: 1.52, 95 % CI: 1.18-1.96), but not in male workers (OR: 1.04, 95 % CI: 0.84-1.29). CONCLUSION High social jetlag was associated with an increased likelihood of hazardous alcohol consumption among women. Our findings underscore the importance of considering sex differences in future research and policy interventions regarding social jetlag and its associated behavior outcomes.

Abstract
Integral health encompasses the way individuals live, considering their quality of life. An inadequate lifestyle can harm human health, increasing the risk of developing chronic non-communicable diseases, which represent 71% of the causes of death worldwide and 54.7% in Brazil. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to impacts on quality of life, resulting from lifestyle changes, especially among health professionals. This constitutes an important factor in the health-disease relationship and the core of the healthcare approach embraced by Ayurveda. The present study evaluated the role of daily Ayurvedic practices in improving the quality of life of health professionals working in the Family Health Strategy of SUS in Paty do Alferes/RJ, Brazil. Ayurveda practices based on Trayopastamba were introduced to 30 health professionals through lectures and guided activities from July to October 2021, spanning three months. Quality of life was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire before and after the intervention. An improvement in perceived quality of life was observed in the physical, psychological, and environmental domains (p > 0.05), while the social domain did not show statistically significant results. The physical domain demonstrated the most substantial score increase (10.95). Conversely, the social domain displayed the smallest rise in scores (5.83). In conclusion, the daily Ayurvedic practices demonstrated the potential to enhance the quality of life in this group, contributing to health promotion in a practical and economically accessible manner.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the prevalence and correlates of social jetlag (SJL) in Chinese adolescents, as well as to test the relationships between SJL and mental health problems. METHODS A total of 106979 students (Mage = 13.0 ± 1.8 years; Nmale = 58296 [54.5 %]) from Shenzhen, China completed an online survey from May 24th to June 5th, 2022. Information on sociodemographics, lifestyles, sleep characteristics, anxiety symptoms, and depressive symptoms was collected by a self-administered questionnaire. Multivariate and binary logistic regression were adopted for data analysis. RESULTS 17.8 % of participants experienced SJL ≥ 2 h. To adjust the accumulated sleep debt, sleep-corrected SJL (SJLsc) was calculated and 8.3 % of individuals self-reported SJLsc ≥ 2 h. Both SJL and SJLsc show an increasing trend with age. Risk factors of SJL included females, poor parental marital status, being overweight, physically inactive, smoking, drinking, and having a late chronotype. Moreover, males, having siblings, boarding at school, short sleep duration, experiencing insomnia, and frequent nightmares were significantly associated with an increased risk of SJLsc. After adjusting for all covariates, adolescents with SJLsc ≥ 2 h were more likely to have anxiety symptoms (OR: 1.35, 95 % CI: 1.24-1.48) and depressive symptoms (OR: 1.35, 95 % CI: 1.25-1.46) than those with SJLsc < 1 h. CONCLUSIONS SJL is common among Chinese school-age adolescents. This study is valuable for the development of prevention and intervention strategies for SJL in adolescents at the population level. Additionally, the strong links between SJLsc and emotional problems underscore the critical significance of addressing SJL as a key aspect of adolescent well-being.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The high prevalence of desynchronized biological rhythms is becoming a primary public health concern. We assess complex and diverse inter-modulations among multi-frequency rhythms present in blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR). SUBJECTS and Methods: We performed 7-day/24-hour Ambulatory BP Monitoring in 220 (133 women) residents (23 to 74 years) of a rural Japanese town in Kochi Prefecture under everyday life conditions. RESULTS A symphony of biological clocks contributes to the preservation of a synchronized circadian system. (1) Citizens with an average 12.02-h period had fewer vascular variability disorders than those with shorter (11.37-h) or longer (12.88-h) periods (P<0.05), suggesting that the circasemidian rhythm is potentially important for human health. (2) An appropriate BP-HR coupling promoted healthier circadian profiles than a phase-advanced BP: lower 7-day nighttime SBP (106.8 vs. 112.9 mmHg, P=0.0469), deeper nocturnal SBP dip (20.5% vs. 16.8%, P=0.0101), and less frequent incidence of masked non-dipping (0.53 vs. 0.86, P=0.0378), identifying the night as an important time window. CONCLUSION Adaptation to irregular schedules in everyday life occurs unconsciously at night, probably initiated from the brain default mode network, in coordination with the biological clock system, including a reinforced about 12-hour clock, as "a biological clock-guided core integration system".

Abstract
Academic performance plays a crucial role in long-term educational attainment and occupational function. Chronotype refers to an individual's daily tendencies for times for waking, activity, and sleep. Social jetlag reflects the mismatch between an individual's chronotype and their social schedule. Because school typically starts early in the morning, later chronotype is often associated with daytime sleepiness, insufficient sleep, and poor academic performance. However, the relationship between academic performance, chronotype, and social jetlag has not been extensively examined in large samples like the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. We hypothesized that greater social jetlag would predict poorer cognitive and academic performance. Year 2 (ages 11-14) cross-sectional data from the ABCD cohort (n = 6,890 adolescents) were used to evaluate academic performance (i.e. self-reported past year grades), NIH Toolbox cognitive performance measures, chronotype, and social jetlag from the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire. We found that later chronotype and greater social jetlag predicted poorer cognitive and academic performance with small effect sizes. Our findings emphasize the importance of individual differences in chronotype and social jetlag when designing class schedules, as aligning school activities with student optimal sleep-wake times may contribute to improved academic performance.

Abstract
Background: Evidence suggests the importance of a person's chronotype in predicting various aspects of an individual's physical and mental health. While the effect of depression on sleep is well established, the impact of a person's specific sleep timing and chronotype on the prevalence of both depression and anxiety has yet to be fully understood, especially among university students, vulnerable to mental health problems. In addition, other factors also seem to influence the occurrence of depression and anxiety among students as well as their quality of sleep, one of which being the students' financial wellness. The objective was to evaluate the association between chronotype and the severity and prevalence of depression among Lebanese university students, while also taking into account the possible connection between chronotype and financial wellness and both anxiety and sleep quality. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2021 and February 2022; 330 Lebanese university students was included (mean age 21.75 ± 2.43; 67.3% females). Results: The majority of the Lebanese university students in our sample were found to have an intermediate typology (63.0%), followed by the evening typology, which appeared to constitute 28.2% of the sample, while only 8.8% possessed a morning typology. In this study, having an intermediate or evening typology compared to a morning one was significantly associated with higher depression and worse sleep quality. In addition, having an evening chronotype compared to a morningness propensity was significantly associated with more anxiety. Conclusion: This study found a positive association between an evening typology (chronotype) and higher depression and anxiety and poorer quality of sleep. Although preliminary and based on cross-sectional data, this research could help provide a better understanding of the different chronotypes among university students, and of the possible increased susceptibility of some of these typologies (i.e., evening-type) to mental health problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND "One for all, and all for one," the famous rallying cry of the Three Musketeers, in Alexandre Dumas's popular novel, certainly applies to the 20,000 cells composing the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). These cells work together to form the central clock that coordinates body rhythms in tune with the day-night cycle. Like virtually every body cell, individual SCN cells exhibit autonomous circadian oscillations, but this rhythmicity only reaches a high level of precision and robustness when the cells are coupled with their neighbors. Therefore, understanding the functional network organization of SCN cells beyond their core rhythmicity is an important issue in circadian biology. SUMMARY The present review summarizes the main results from our recent study demonstrating the feasibility of recording SCN cells in freely moving mice and the significance of variations in intracellular calcium over several timescales. KEY MESSAGE We discuss how in vivo imaging at the cell level will be pivotal to interrogate the mammalian master clock, in an integrated context that preserves the SCN network organization, with intact inputs and outputs.

Abstract
Chronotype, an individual's preferred sleep-wake timing, is influenced by sex and age. Men sometimes report a later chronotype than women and older age is associated with earlier chronotype. The sex-related changes in chronotype coincide with puberty and menopause. However, the effects of sex hormones on human chronotype remain unclear. To examine the impact of 3 months of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) on chronotype in transgender persons, this study used data from 93 participants from the prospective RESTED cohort, including 49 transmasculine (TM) participants starting testosterone and 44 transfeminine (TF) participants starting estrogens and antiandrogens. Midpoint of sleep and sleep duration were measured using the ultra-short Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (µMCTQ). After 3 months of GAHT, TM participants' midpoint of sleep increased by 24 minutes (95% CI: 3 to 45), whereas TF participants' midpoint of sleep decreased by 21 minutes (95% CI: -38 to -4). Total sleep duration did not change significantly in either group. This study provides the first prospective assessment of sex hormone use and chronotype in transgender persons, showing that GAHT can change chronotype in line with cisgender sex differences. These findings provide a basis for future studies on biological mechanisms and clinical consequences of chronotype changes.

Abstract
Sleepiness is a multicausal condition, and previous research has highlighted associations between this symptom and the circadian timing system, specifically concerning social jetlag and sleep variability. Recent inquiries have shown that the effects of social jetlag on sleepiness can be confounded with the consequences of sleep debt. In light of the current evidence, we aimed to assess the effects of social jetlag and sleep variability on sleepiness and the potential mediating role of sleep debt. We used data from the EPISONO study, a cross-sectional population-based study with a sample size of 1042 participants, representative of the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Participants completed the UNIFESP Sleep Questionnaire (self-reported bedtime and get-up time) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (subjective daytime sleepiness). Subsequently, sleep-corrected mid-sleep time (chronotype), total sleep time, social jetlag (absolute difference between the mid-sleep time on workdays and mid-sleep time on free days), sleep variability (standard deviation of mid-sleep time), and sleep debt (difference between total sleep time on workdays and free days) were calculated. Generalised linear models were used to test whether social jetlag and sleep variability affected sleepiness. Mediation models were used to determine if any observed significant effects were mediated by sleep debt. The prevalence of social jetlag was 23% for >1 h and 12% for >2 h. The mean sleep variability was 41 ± 30 min. Social jetlag had a significant effect on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores. This association was no longer statistically significant after controlling for age, sex, body mass index, work schedule, and chronotype. A significant indirect effect of social jetlag on sleep debt and subsequently on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores was found. No effect of sleep variability on sleepiness could be identified. In conclusion, the association between social jetlag and sleepiness was mediated by sleep debt but was not independent of demographic, work, and chronotype variables. This study provides new evidence on the importance of circadian misalignment and sleep debt for sleep health on a population level.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Social jetlag is a discordance between the social and biological rhythm and is associated with higher HbA1c, higher BMI, and higher odds of obesity. The pathways that could explain these associations are still debated. This study aims to assess the mediating role of several lifestyle factors in the cross-sectional association between social jetlag and BMI. METHODS We used cross-sectional data from 1784 adults from urban areas in the Netherlands, collected in 2019. Social jetlag (difference in midpoint of sleep between week and weekend nights) was categorized as low(<1 h), moderate(1-2h), and high(>2 h). BMI(kg/m2) was calculated from self-reported height and weight. The association between social jetlag and BMI was assessed using linear regression, adjusted for sex, age, education, and sleep duration and stratified for the effect modifier stress (high vs. low). Mediation analysis was performed for self-reported smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and adherence to a healthy diet. RESULTS High social jetlag was associated with higher BMI (0.69 kg/m2,95%CI 0.05;1.33). This association was stronger in people with high stress (0.93 kg/m2,95%CI 0.09;1.76). Social jetlag was also associated with higher odds of smoking, lower physical activity, higher alcohol consumption, and lower healthy diet adherence. In people with high stress, these factors mediated 10-15% of the association between social jetlag and BMI. CONCLUSIONS Social jetlag is associated with higher BMI and this association is stronger in people with high stress. In people with high stress, healthy diet adherence mediated 12% of this association. Other pathways involved in this association should be further investigated.

Abstract
This study evaluates how food addiction is related to chronotype, social jetlag, and psychological pain. Of the participants (n = 1,035 university students), 16.6% had a morning chronotype, 25.1% had an evening chronotype, and 25.1% were clinically addicted to eating. The mean sleep durations for participants were 7.41 ± 2.18 h and 8.95 ± 3.0 h on weekdays and weekends, respectively. The mean misalignment time for social jetlag was 1.45 ± 1.5 h. Food addiction, psychological pain, and social jetlag levels were high among participants with the evening chronotype. The risk factors for food addiction included being female, having an evening chronotype, and having high body mass index levels and psychological pain. The total indirect effect of psychological pain and social jetlag on the relationship between chronotype and food addiction was 20.6%. However, the social jetlag effect is relatively minor compared to psychological pain. The significant conclusions of this study are as follows. Clinical food addiction is prevalent among students, and a strong direct correlation between chronotype and food addiction was observed. The study emphasizes the importance of being aware of chronotype and mental status in establishing a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Abstract
The eight biological hallmarks of health that we initially postulated (Cell. 2021 Jan 7;184(1):33-63) include features of spatial compartmentalization (integrity of barriers, containment of local perturbations), maintenance of homeostasis over time (recycling & turnover, integration of circuitries, rhythmic oscillations) and an array of adequate responses to stress (homeostatic resilience, hormetic regulation, repair & regeneration). These hallmarks affect all eight somatic strata of the human body (molecules, organelles, cells, supracellular units, organs, organ systems, systemic circuitries and meta-organism). Here we postulate that mental and socioeconomic factors must be added to this 8×8 matrix as an additional hallmark of health ("psychosocial adaptation") and as an additional stratum ("psychosocial interactions"), hence building a 9×9 matrix. Potentially, perturbation of each of the somatic hallmarks and strata affects psychosocial factors and vice versa. Finally, we discuss the (patho)physiological bases of these interactions and their implications for mental health improvement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The circadian system is the main regulator of almost all human physiological processes. The aim of this study was to assess sleep in the working population, in relation to the share of remote working. MATERIAL AND METHODS An online survey was conducted among students and staff representing 3 universities in Łódź, Poland (N = 1209). The participants were divided into 3 groups according to the percentage of time they worked remotely. Group I consisted of respondents performing tasks remotely for ≤45% of their working time; group II included respondents performing their duties remotely for >45-75% of their working time, and group III included those working >75% of their time remotely. RESULTS performing their duties remotely for >45-75% of their working time, and group III included those working >75% of their time remotely. Results: In the study, the authors found the association between the length of time spent on a computer, the percentage of time working remotely, and the occurrence of physical symptoms and the prevalence of sleep disorders. The most significant difference between working days and days off in terms of the mid-point of sleep (1.5 h) was observed in group I, where there was the greatest variability in the form of work performance. The participants who worked most of their time remotely (group III) shifted their bedtime to midnight, both on working days and on days off. CONCLUSIONS The study highlights that increased remote computer use leads to a shift in sleeping patterns towards midnight. The participants with later midpoint of sleep hours were found to have a higher incidence of sleep disorders. The prevalence of sleep disorders was significantly impacted by prolonged mobile phone use before bedtime and long hours of computer use. Thus, limiting both the time spent in front of a computer and the use of mobile phones before bedtime is recommended. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2024;37(1):34-44.

Abstract
This study presents the sleep characteristics of British student-athletes and examines the relationships between sport scheduling and time demands on sleep outcomes. Student-athletes (n = 157, 51% male) completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and the Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI). Self-reported sleep characteristics on weekdays and weekends, weekly frequencies of early morning and late evening sport sessions, and academic-related and sport-related time demands were also collected. Questionnaires revealed a high prevalence of undesired sleep characteristics including poor sleep quality (global PSQI >5 in 49.0%) and low sleep durations on weekdays (25% reporting <7 h). Paired t-tests revealed significant differences in bedtime, waketime, sleep duration, and sleep onset latency between weekdays and weekends (all p < 0.01). Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that early morning sport frequency was a significant predictor of PSQI (β = 0.30) and SHI (β = 0.24) global scores, weekday waketimes (β = -0.17), and weekday sleep durations (β = -0.25; all p < 0.05) in models adjusted for participant characteristics. Late evening sport frequency, and academic-related and sport-related time demands, were not significant predictors of any sleep outcome. Adjusting sport scheduling to avoid early start times could provide a means to improve sleep outcomes and may improve sporting performance and academic attainment.

Abstract
Social jetlag, the weekly variation in sleep timing, is proposed to contribute to increased obesity risk, potentially because of the misalignment of behavioral cycles relative to the endogenous circadian timing system. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to determine the association between social jetlag and adiposity-related measures using observational studies. We reviewed 477 references, of which 43 studies met inclusion criteria with a total sample size of 231,648. There was a positive association between social jetlag and body mass index (correlation coefficient [r]: 0.12; 95%CI, 0.07, 0.17; P < 0.001; I2 = 94.99%), fat mass (r: 0.10; 95%CI, 0.05, 0.15; P < 0.001; I2 = 0.00%), fat mass index (fat mass divided by height in meter squared, β: 0.14 kg/m2 ; 95%CI, 0.05, 0.23; P < 0.001; I2 = 56.50%), percent of body fat (r: 0.37; 95%CI, 0.33, 0.41; P < 0.001; I2 = 96.17%), waist circumference (r: 0.15; 95%CI, 0.06, 0.24; P = 0.001; I2 = 90.83%), and the risk of having overweight/obesity (odds ratio: 1.20; 95%CI, 1.02, 1.140; P = 0.039; I2 = 98.25%). Social jetlag is positively and consistently associated with multiple obesity-related anthropometric measures. Further studies are needed to test causality, underlying mechanisms, and whether obesity interventions based on increasing regularity of the sleep/wake cycle can aid in the battle against the obesity pandemic.

Abstract
Sleep is a complex behavior regulated by genetic and environmental factors, and is known to influence health outcomes. However, the effect of multidimensional sleep encompassing several sleep dimensions on diseases has yet to be fully elucidated. Using the Mass General Brigham Biobank, we aimed to examine the association of multidimensional sleep with health outcomes and investigate whether sleep behaviors modulate genetic predisposition to unfavorable sleep on mental health outcomes. First, we generated a Polygenic Sleep Health Score using previously identified single nucleotide polymorphisms for sleep health and constructed a Sleep Lifestyle Index using data from self-reported sleep questions and electronic health records; second, we performed phenome-wide association analyses between these indexes and clinical phenotypes; and third, we analyzed the interaction between the indexes on prevalent mental health outcomes. Fifteen thousand eight hundred and eighty-four participants were included in the analysis (mean age 54.4; 58.6% female). The Polygenic Sleep Health Score was associated with the Sleep Lifestyle Index (β=0.050, 95%CI=0.032, 0.068) and with 114 disease outcomes spanning 12 disease groups, including obesity, sleep, and substance use disease outcomes (p<3.3×10-5). The Sleep Lifestyle Index was associated with 458 disease outcomes spanning 17 groups, including sleep, mood, and anxiety disease outcomes (p<5.1×10-5). No interactions were found between the indexes on prevalent mental health outcomes. These findings suggest that favorable sleep behaviors and genetic predisposition to healthy sleep may independently be protective of disease outcomes. This work provides novel insights into the role of multidimensional sleep on population health and highlights the need to develop prevention strategies focused on healthy sleep habits.

Abstract
Objective Weekend sleep duration is linked to health issues, including mortality. However, how weekend sleep duration can impact chronic kidney disease (CKD) still needs to be understood. Therefore, we aimed to analyze how weekend sleep duration is associated with kidney function. Methods This is a cross-sectional study. Data were obtained from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We included 5362 study participants and categorized them into nine subgroups by sleep duration (short: ≤6 hours, normal: 6-9 hours, and long: ≥9 hours) on weekdays and weekends and analyzed for the respective association with renal function using stratified multivariable linear regression. Results Weekend sleep duration for 9 hours or more was associated with decreasing estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) levels by 2.8 to 6.4 mL/min/1.73 m2 among people with long to short weekday sleep duration compared with short weekday and weekend sleep durations (control group) after adjusting for demographic characteristics, body measurement, sleep quality, smoking, and comorbidities. The study population with short weekday sleep duration (sWK) and long weekend sleep duration (lWD) had the most significant decline in eGFR. For the study population with sWK, eGFR level significantly decreased by 1.1 mL/min/1.73 m2 as sleep duration on weekends increased by one hour. Conclusion The underlying mediators of lWD and CKD could be the dysregulation of human behaviors, metabolism, or biological functions. Longer weekend sleep duration was linked to a decrease in eGFR levels. It warrants further study to clarify the mediators.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evidence-based guidelines recommend that adults should sleep 7-9 h/night for optimal health and function. This study used noninvasive, multinight, objective sleep monitoring to determine average sleep duration and sleep duration variability in a large global community sample, and how often participants met the recommended sleep duration range. METHODS Data were analyzed from registered users of the Withings under-mattress Sleep Analyzer (predominantly located in Europe and North America) who had ≥28 nights of sleep recordings, averaging ≥4 per week. Sleep durations (the average and standard deviation) were assessed across a ∼9-month period. Associations between age groups, sex, and sleep duration were assessed using linear and logistic regressions, and proportions of participants within (7-9 hours) or outside (<7 hours or >9 hours) the recommended sleep duration range were calculated. RESULTS The sample consisted of 67,254 adults (52,523 males, 14,731 females; aged mean ± SD 50 ± 12 years). About 30% of adults demonstrated an average sleep duration outside the recommended 7-9 h/night. Even in participants with an average sleep duration within 7-9 hours, about 40% of nights were outside this range. Only 15% of participants slept between 7 and 9 hours for at least 5 nights per week. Female participants had significantly longer sleep durations than male participants, and middle-aged participants had shorter sleep durations than younger or older participants. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that a considerable proportion of adults are not regularly sleeping the recommended 7-9 h/night. Even among those who do, irregular sleep is prevalent. These novel data raise several important questions regarding sleep requirements and the need for improved sleep health policy and advocacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social jetlag is a circadian misalignment that arises from a discrepancy between activity/sleep schedules on school/work days and free days. This study explored the correlation between social jetlag and self-rated health (SRH) in a representative sample of Korea. METHODS This study included 8259 working population in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2016-2018. Social jetlag was calculated as the difference between the midpoint of sleep time on work day and work-free day. Five-point Likert scale of SRH was used to assess subjective health perception on general health conditions. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) for poor SRH in the 1-2 h or longer than 2 h social jetlag groups compared to that in the reference group (less than 1 h), after adjusting for age, sex, marital status, occupation, household income, and weekly working hours. RESULTS The proportions of those with <1 h, 1-2 h, >2 h of social jetlag were 63.80 %, 25.67 %, and 10.53 %, respectively. The risk of poor SRH increased as social jetlag increased. Greater social jetlag was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of reporting poor SRH. The adjusted ORs for the groups with social jetlag between 1 and <2 h, and >2 h were 1.100 (95 % CI = 0.935-1.295), and 1.503 (95 % CI = 1.097-1.727), respectively. Moreover, the OR trend was statistically significant (p for trend = 0.008). CONCLUSION This study found that social jetlag and poor SRH were significantly related in the Korean working population.

Abstract
Changes in circadian rhythms have been observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and evidence suggests that these changes can have a negative impact on health. This study aimed to investigate the existence of hemodialysis-induced chronodisruption, the chronotype distribution, and their association with sleep quality and quality of life (QoL). This was a cross-sectional study that enrolled 165 patients (mean age: 51.1 ± 12.5 y, 60.6% male) undergoing hemodialysis from three local units. The following instruments were used: the Morning-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ); a modified version of the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCQT) to estimate hemodialysis-induced chronodisruption (HIC); the Kidney Disease QoL Short Form (KDQOL-SF); the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS); the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the 10-Cognitive Screener (10-CS). HIC was present in 40.6% of CKD patients. Morning chronotype was prevalent in CKD patients (69%) compared to evening-type (17.1%) and significantly different from a paired sample from the general population (p < 0.001). HIC and chronotype were associated with different domains of QoL but not with sleep quality. This study suggests that there is a HIC and that morning chronotype is associated with CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis, with implications for QoL.
