Abstract
The interplay between nutrition, physical activity, and mental health has emerged as a frontier in bioengineering research, offering innovative pathways for enhancing cognitive function and psychological resilience. This review explores the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the synergistic effects of tailored nutritional strategies and exercise interventions on brain health and mental well-being. Key topics include the role of micronutrients and macronutrients in modulating neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity, the impact of exercise-induced myokines and neurotrophins on cognitive enhancement, and the integration of wearable bioelectronics for personalized monitoring and optimization. By bridging the disciplines of nutrition, psychology, and sports science with cutting-edge bioengineering, this review highlights translational opportunities for developing targeted interventions that advance mental health outcomes. These insights are particularly relevant for addressing global challenges such as stress, anxiety, and neurodegenerative diseases. The article concludes with a roadmap for future research, emphasizing the potential of bioengineered solutions to revolutionize preventive and therapeutic strategies in mental health care.

Abstract
Time-of-day and individual circadian variability influence cognitive performance, with later chronotypes being most compromised earlier in the day. On the other hand, moderate-intensity exercise has been shown to enhance cognitive function. We sought to evaluate the interplay among circadian rhythms, exercise, and cognitive performance in 22 students from the Uruguayan National Dance School, a population previously characterized as late chronotypes, attending a demanding morning schedule. We assessed sleep habits and physical activity patterns using self-report questionnaires and actigraphy. Before and after morning training, participants completed a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) and a visual Stroop task (congruent and incongruent). The reaction speeds were lower early in the morning than at noon for all these tasks. We also found (1) a positive correlation between weekend sleep duration and PVT performance before training but not after; (2) a negative correlation between individual circadian phase and Stroop performance for both congruent and incongruent conditions after training but not before; and (3) a better Stroop performance after training for both congruent and incongruent conditions in dancers who engaged longer moderate-intensity exercise during training. Our findings suggest that regular morning training might help mitigate cognitive impairments experienced by dancers with later chronotypes in challenging morning scenarios.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory condition often associated with a high incidence of osteoporosis. Studies indicate that patients with COPD present with a significant decrease in bone mineral density (BMD), potentially related to inflammation and corticosteroid use. AIM To investigate the relationship between BMD and lung function, mainly the forced expiratory volume in the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1)/ forced vital capacity percentage (FVC%), in patients with COPD using quantitative computed tomography (QCT). METHODS This prospective cross-sectional study included 85 patients with COPD treated at Gansu Provincial People's Hospital. Exposure variables included lung function parameter (FEV1/FVC%), age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, tea-drinking habits, and physical activity. BMD was measured using QCT. Linear regression and generalized additive models were employed to analyze the relationship between exposure variables and BMD. RESULTS Linear regression analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between BMD and FEV1/FVC% (β = 0.1, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.1-0.1; P < 0.0001). Non-linear analysis identified a unique BMD breakpoint of 128.08 mg/cm³. Before the breakpoint, BMD was significantly positively correlated with FEV1/FVC% (β = 0.245; P = 0.0019); while after the breakpoint, the relationship was negative and showed no statistical significance (β = -0.136; P = 0.0753). This finding underscores the critical role of BMD in COPD management and highlights the importance of individualized clinical interventions in improvement of lung function and overall health status in patients. CONCLUSION There is a complex non-linear relationship between BMD and lung function in patients with COPD, highlighting the importance of monitoring change in bone density during the management of COPD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Children with WAGR syndrome, an ultra-rare genetic condition associated with deletion of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), may be at increased risk for sleep problems, but there are limited data assessing sleep in this population. This study aimed to compare sleep disturbances and sleep-disordered breathing in youth with WAGR syndrome compared to healthy youth. METHODS Parents of youth with WAGR syndrome and healthy controls completed an online survey including demographics, the PROMIS Pediatric Sleep Disturbance item bank, and the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders scale (PSQ-SRBD). RESULTS Fifteen youth with WAGR syndrome, median (interquartile range) age 10 (7,11) years and 27 controls 9 (6, 10) years were included. PROMIS Sleep Disturbance T-scores were higher in youth with WAGR syndrome (58.1 [53.3, 66.1]) versus controls (52.5 [44.3, 58.3], p = 0.03) indicating more sleep disturbance. Melatonin was used for sleep in 7 (47 %) youth with WAGR syndrome versus 3 (11 %) controls (p = 0.009). PSQ-SRBD scores were greater in youth with WAGR syndrome (0.52 [0.45, 0.65]) compared to controls (0.09 [0.05, 0.18], p < 0.001); 93 % of youth with WAGR syndrome had elevated PSQ-SRBD scores. One-third of youth with WAGR syndrome reported having a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. No differences in sleep outcomes were identified based on BDNF deletion status in those with WAGR syndrome. CONCLUSIONS Sleep disturbances and sleep-disordered breathing are prevalent in youth with WAGR syndrome. Diverse cohorts with clinical data including polysomnography are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The menopausal decline in ovarian estrogen production is thought to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease; however, this link requires further investigation. The chronological development of this connection is not well defined because of the lack of animal models that recapitulate the time course of menopause. This study characterized the cognitive and neuronal effects of the 4-vinylcyclohexene diepoxide (VCD) model of ovarian failure in female mice and assessed whether high-intensity interval training (HIIT) would attenuate impairments. METHODS Female mice were injected with VCD for 15 days. Novel object recognition tests (NORT) were conducted during (perimenopause) and after (menopause) ovarian failure (n = 7). HIIT was initiated in menopause and mice underwent NORT testing after 2 and 8 weeks of HIIT (n = 5). RESULTS VCD mice had a lower discrimination index, and lower SNAP25 and NeuN expression in perimenopause. HIIT did not recover memory in VCD mice. DISCUSSION Neuronal changes arise early in the perimenopausal transition and HIIT did not improve recognition memory when initiated in menopause. HIGHLIGHTS The menopausal decline in ovarian estrogen production increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The chronological development of this connection is not well defined because of the lack of animal models that recapitulate the time course of menopause. 4-vinylcyclohexene diepoxide (VCD)-induced ovarian failure provides a model that simulates the average human experience in the transition from perimenopause to menopause. We demonstrate that cognitive and biochemical effects related to AD pathology are present from the earliest available timepoint in perimenopause in VCD mice. This work highlights the importance of examining the time course in the progression to menopause and the use of VCD as a model to investigate changes in the brain.

Abstract
Aging is a complex biological process characterized by increased inflammation and susceptibility to various age-related diseases, including cognitive decline, osteoporosis, and type 2 diabetes. Exercise has been shown to modulate mitochondrial function, immune responses, and inflammatory pathways, thereby attenuating aging through the regulation of exerkines secreted by diverse tissues and organs. These bioactive molecules, which include hepatokines, myokines, adipokines, osteokines, and neurokines, act both locally and systemically to exert protective effects against the detrimental aspects of aging. This review provides a comprehensive summary of different forms of exercise for older adults and the multifaceted role of exercise in anti-aging, focusing on the biological functions and sources of these exerkines. We further explore how exerkines combat aging-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis. By stimulating the secretion of these exerkines, exercise supports healthy longevity by promoting tissue homeostasis and metabolic balance. Additionally, the integration of exercise-induced exerkines into therapeutic strategies represents a promising approach to mitigating age-related pathologies at the molecular level. As our understanding deepens, it may pave the way for personalized interventions leveraging physical activity to enhance healthspan and improve quality of life.

Abstract
Purpose Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a global health concern. Studies have demonstrated that oleanolic acid (OA) has a regulatory effect on MDD. However, OA is poorly soluble, has low oral bioavailability, and faces challenges in crossing the blood-brain barrier. In this study, building upon a previous formulation of OA cubic liquid crystal nanoparticles (OA-LCNP), we combined nanoparticles with a thermosensitive gel for nasal administration and investigated the pharmacological effects of OA-LCNP thermosensitive gel (OANG) on depression. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of OANG on depression symptoms in rats. Methods OANG was prepared using Poloxamer F127 and F68 as the gel matrix, and the ratios of F127 and F68 were investigated. The pharmacokinetics of OANG was studied in rats, and OA content was determined using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The pharmacological effects of OANG on depression were evaluated in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model rats. Results The phase transition temperature of the gel was 34°C, and the release of OA from OANG was slow according to the Higuchi kinetic equation. The AUC0-t of brain tissue after nasal OANG administration was 1.21 times that observed after intravenous administration. Additionally, the brain-targeting efficiency and nasal-brain direct transfer were 29.91% and 9.44% higher, respectively, than those observed after intravenous administration, indicating the brain-targeting capability of the OANG delivery system. Network pharmacological analysis revealed that the anti-depressant effects may be linked to neuroactive ligand-receptor interactions, the PPAR signaling pathway, and efferocytosis signaling pathways. Experimental results from CUMS rats showed that the gel significantly affected interleukin (IL)-4, IL-6, acetylcholinesterase, acetylcholine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and improved depression-like behavior in rats, as measured by sucrose preference, forced swimming, and box shuttle tests. Conclusion The OANG nasal drug delivery system has specific brain-targeting properties and exerts anti-depressant effects.

Abstract
Introduction The classroom environment is ideal for promoting physical activity interventions since children spend most of their day there but often engage in sedentary behavior. Given this context, an emerging trend to promote physical activity is active breaks at school. This systematic review evaluated the effects of school-based physical activity interventions involving active breaks on children and adolescents' classroom behavior, executive functions, and physical fitness. Methods This review was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and EBSCOhost. Studies published between January 2010 and August 31, 2023, including participants aged 5 to 18, were included. Interventions involving active breaks and outcomes related to classroom behavior, executive functions, and physical fitness were considered. Results Initially, 145 studies were identified, with 22 duplicates excluded. After screening 123 articles by title and abstract, 86 were excluded. Subsequently, 37 articles underwent full-text screening, resulting in 22 included studies. Six studies showed positive effects on classroom behavior; five studies showed improvements in executive functions, and only two studies indicated increases in physical fitness. Discussion This review suggests incorporating active breaks during school hours can improve classroom behavior in children and adolescents. However, the effects of active breaks on executive functions and physical fitness are unclear. More research is needed to fully understand the benefits of implementing active break programs in the classroom. Abstract
This review explores the impact of physical exercise on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its relationship with neurodegenerative diseases. The key role of BDNF in maintaining brain health is highlighted, and recent studies are analyzed that indicate an increase in BDNF levels following physical activity, particularly in young adults. Additionally, the interaction between the BDNF Val66Met genetic polymorphism and exercise on cognitive function is examined. The review emphasizes the possibility of exercise as a complementary therapy for neurodegenerative diseases, although further research is required to fully understand its effects.

Abstract
Myokine is a general term for hormones, peptides, and other substances secreted by skeletal muscle. Myokine has attracted much attention in recent years as a key substance for understanding the mechanism of "exercise and health". Skeletal muscle accounts for about 40% of the total human weight and is now recognized as an endocrine organ that produces myokines, which have physiological activity. Representative myokines include IL-6, myostatin, irisin, brain-derived neurotropic factor, fibroblast growth factor-21, and decorin. On the other hand, sarcopenia, defined by quantitative and qualitative loss of skeletal muscle, is a condition that has received much attention in recent years because of its close correlation with prognosis. In patients with chronic liver disease (CLD), sarcopenia is a common complication. Mechanisms underlying sarcopenia in CLD patients have been reported to involve protein-energy malnutrition, which is characteristic of patients with cirrhosis, signaling involved in protein synthesis and degradation, myokines such as myostatin and decorin, the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, sex hormones such as testosterone, dysbiosis, and insulin resistance, etc., in addition to aging. Each of these pathological conditions is thought to be intricately related to each other, leading to sarcopenia. This review will summarize the relationship between CLD and myokines.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate whether 14 weeks of β-alanine supplementation and high-intensity intermittent training improves brain-derived neurotrophic factor concentrations and cognitive aspects related to executive functions assessed by the Stroop test. Thirteen healthy and active men underwent a 4-week supplementation period (β-alanine: 6.4 g/d or a placebo) followed by 10-week supplementation combined with high-intensity intermittent training, totaling 14 weeks of intervention. Participants underwent a graded exercise test, while the blood samples for brain-derived neurotrophic factor analysis and the Stroop test (cognitive task) were assessed before and after a high-intensity intermittent exercise (10 runs of 1:1 min effort and a pause ratio at 130% of respiratory compensation point). These measurements were performed three times across the study being at baseline, after 4 weeks of supplementation (POST4weeks) and at the end of the 14 weeks of study (POST14weeks). Compared to baseline values, there were no improvements in brain-derived neurotrophic factor concentrations or Stroop test performance with either β-alanine or high-intensity intermittent training. Lactate peak concentrations in a high-intensity intermittent exercise session also did not differ between groups. However, high-intensity intermittent training did improve some cardiorespiratory parameters (i.e., intensity associated with V̇O2max p=0.01 and respiratory compensation point, p=0.01). In conclusion, β-alanine supplementation alone or associated with high-intensity intermittent training did not improve the brain-derived neurotrophic factor concentrations and Stroop test performance in healthy men.

Abstract
(1) Background: The recovery method is important and decisive in the training system. This study aimed to assess the effects of various post-training recovery methods on muscle damage and strength indicators in Paralympic powerlifting athletes. (2) Methods: A crossover study was conducted involving eleven male athletes (25.4 ± 3.3 years, 70.3 ± 12.1 kg). Muscle damage was assessed using blood biochemical markers (cytokines IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α) and isometric force indicators, including the maximum isometric force (MIF), time to MIF, and Rate of Force Development. The following assessments were performed before, immediately after, and at 24 and 48 h after the recovery protocol: (a) passive recovery (RP) or (b) cold-water immersion (CWI). (3) Results: The main results indicated that maximum isometric force (MIF) significantly improved after 48 h of CWI application (p < 0.05; for all comparison). The analysis of biochemical markers did not yield significant differences between the recovery methods at different time points (p > 0.05). For IL-6, there were significant differences between CWI before (2.29 ± 1.08, 95% CI 1.57-3.01) and CWI 2 h later (2 h) (4.59 ± 2.96, 95% CI 2.60-6.57; p = 0.045), and between CWI 15 min later (15 min) (4.14 ± 2.24, 95% CI 2.63-5.64) and CWI 48 h later (48 h) (2.33 ± 1.25, 95% CI 1.49-3.17; p = 0.034). There were differences between CWI 2 h (4.14 ± 2.24, 95% CI 2.63-5.64) and CWI 48 h later (2.33 ± 1.25, 95% CI 1.49-3.17; p = 0.035; F = 9.202; η2p = 0.479; high effect). (4) Conclusions: CWI significantly improved the post-resistance training muscle damage and strength in Paralympic powerlifting athletes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study sought to conduct a meticulous systematic review, delving into the efficacy of exercise interventions on depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults. Additionally, we aimed to scrutinize the nuanced influence of various intervention factors on the intricate relationship between exercise and depressive symptoms within this demographic. METHODS Our investigation involved an extensive search across multiple databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, spanning from the inception of these repositories to December 2023. Following a rigorous screening process, we identified and included 12 papers, encompassing a total of 994 subjects. RESULTS The meta-analysis unveiled a compelling overall effect size of exercise interventions on depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older individuals, represented by SMD = -0.41, with a 95% confidence interval of [-0.60, -0.22], and P < 0.0001. This statistical evidence underscores the significant and positive impact of exercise interventions on ameliorating depressive symptoms in this demographic. However, a degree of heterogeneity among studies was observed, with I2 = 48% and P = 0.03. CONCLUSION The comprehensive synthesis of outcomes elucidates the pronounced positive effect of exercise interventions in enhancing depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults. Specifically, the gentle and balanced exercise series emerges as particularly efficacious in mitigating depression. Furthermore, individual exercises stand out as more effective, with optimal results noted for moderate exercise sessions lasting 30 to 60 minutes. Our findings also highlight the superiority of short-term interventions, followed by medium- and long-term exercise interventions, in terms of efficacy. Nevertheless, recognizing the inherent heterogeneity and potential limitations of our study, we advocate for future large-scale, comprehensive investigations to validate these findings. Additionally, optimizing exercise intervention protocols necessitates a more nuanced understanding, urging further research endeavors to refine strategies aimed at improving depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES This study aims to assess the effects of combined hormonal contraceptives (CHCs) on bone metabolism markers. It primarily measures osteocalcin and additionally examines other bone health markers, seeking to determine their responses to estrogen-progestogen treatments. METHODS This study involved a comprehensive evaluation of the pertinent literature and a meta-analysis explicitly conducted on data describing women of reproductive age. The analysis encompassed accessible papers ranging to December 2024 (i.e., those listed in PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus, the Cochrane Database, International Clinical Trials Registry, and ClinicalTrials.gov). We examined published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and prospective studies. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Cochrane tool for RCTs and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for prospective studies. The selected indicators for primary and secondary outcomes were ascertained by standardized mean change (SMC), displaying the difference between conditions before and after treatment. Trends were evaluated using meta-regressions. RESULTS Ultimately, 34 articles out of 1924 identified items met the inclusion criteria, covering 33 unique studies. In EE/E4 combinations, osteocalcin dropped significantly (SMC -0.54 (CI.95 -0.64/-0.43) and -0.43 (CI.95 -0.76/-0.10)). Similar effects were observed for other bone-formation and reabsorption markers, with less significant reductions observed in E2-containing CHC (e.g., alkaline phosphatase (bone) EE combinations, SMC -0.39 (CI.95 -0.67/-0.11); P1NP E2 combination, 0.12 (CI.95 -0.10/0.33); and EE combinations, -0.55 (CI.95 -0.83/-0.26)). The reduction patterns also exhibited differences according to the women's age (e.g., osteocalcin in EE combinations ≤21, SMC -0.63 (CI.95 -0.77/-0.49) and >21, SMC -0.42 (CI.95 -0.61/-0.24); alkaline phosphatase (bone) EE combinations ≤21, SMC -0.55 (CI.95 -0.86/-0.24) and >21, SMC -0.06 (CI.95 -0.47/0.35)). This analysis found that CHC maintains or reduces bone turnover in childbearing women, with effects varying by age and hormone combination. Moreover, bone-formation and reabsorption markers correlated positively to pro-androgenic progestins (p < 0.05). Thus, estrogen-progestogen combinations reduce bone turnover less when weak estrogens and a pro-androgenic or neutral progestin are present. CONCLUSIONS This study found that CHCs reduce bone turnover, with natural estrogens and androgenic progestins appearing to be more beneficial than EE and anti-androgenic types. These findings would potentially influence decisions relevant to CHC prescriptions during a woman's reproductive phases, emphasizing the need for additional research to tailor CHC usage to bone health.

Abstract
The hippocampus, noted as (HC), plays a crucial role in the processes of learning, memory formation, and spatial navigation. Recent research reveals that this brain region can undergo structural and functional changes due to environmental exposures, including stress, noise pollution, sleep deprivation, and microgravity. This review synthesizes findings from animal and human studies, emphasizing the HC's plasticity in response to these factors. It examines changes in volume, architecture, neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity, and gene expression and highlights critical periods of vulnerability to environmental influences impacting cognition and behavior. It also investigates underlying mechanisms such as glucocorticoid signaling, epigenetic alterations, and neural circuit adaptations. Understanding how the HC reacts to various environmental exposures is vital for developing strategies to enhance cognitive resilience and mitigate negative effects on this crucial brain region. Further research is needed to identify protective and risk factors and create effective interventions.

Abstract
Exercise can be leveraged as an important tool to improve neural and psychological health, either on its own or to bolster the efficacy of evidence-based treatment modalities. Research in both humans and animal models shows that positive experiences, such as exercise, promote neuroprotection while, in contrast, aversive experiences, particularly those in early development, are often neurologically and psychologically disruptive. In the current study, we employed a preclinical model to investigate the therapeutic benefits of exercise on gene expression in the brains of adult rats. Long Evans rats were exposed to maltreatment stress or nurturing care during infancy, with some rats later given voluntary running wheels as an aerobic exercise intervention from Postnatal Days 70 to 90. Our results showed that irisin gene expression, which promotes neuroprotection, was differentially affected by exercise and early exposure to stress. We add to a rapidly growing area of research on the neuroprotective benefits of exercise and shed light on important molecular mechanisms that may affect the efficacy of exercise in different individuals.

Abstract
Mood disorders include a set of psychiatric manifestations of increasing prevalence in our society, being mainly represented by major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). The etiopathogenesis of mood disorders is extremely complex, with a wide spectrum of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors being responsible for their appearance and development. In this sense, immune system dysfunction represents a key mechanism in the onset and pathophysiology of mood disorders, worsening mainly the central nervous system (neuroinflammation) and the periphery of the body (systemic inflammation). However, these alterations cannot be understood separately, but as part of a complex picture in which different factors and systems interact with each other. Psychoneuroimmunoendocrinology (PNIE) is the area responsible for studying the relationship between these elements and the impact of mind-body integration, placing the immune system as part of a whole. Thus, the dysfunction of the immune system is capable of influencing and activating different mechanisms that promote disruption of the psyche, damage to the nervous system, alterations to the endocrine and metabolic systems, and disruption of the microbiota and intestinal ecosystem, as well as of other organs and, in turn, all these mechanisms are responsible for inducing and enhancing the immune dysfunction. Similarly, the clinical approach to these patients is usually multidisciplinary, and the therapeutic arsenal includes different pharmacological (for example, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and lithium) and non-pharmacological (i.e., psychotherapy, lifestyle, and electroconvulsive therapy) treatments. These interventions also modulate the immune system and other elements of the PNIE in these patients, which may be interesting to understand the therapeutic success or failure of these approaches. In this sense, this review aims to delve into the relationship between immune dysfunction and mood disorders and their integration in the complex context of PNIE. Likewise, an attempt will be made to explore the effects on the immune system of different strategies available in the clinical approach to these patients, in order to identify the mechanisms described and their possible uses as biomarkers.

Abstract
Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes, are the leading global causes of mortality, accounting for 71 % of deaths annually. Metabolic Syndrome (MS), characterized by hypertension, obesity, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia, is a significant risk factor for NCDs. Physical inactivity exacerbates these conditions, contributing to poor cardiovascular and mental health outcomes. OBJECTIVE To analyze the effects of physical exercise on Irisin and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) concentrations and their relationship with cardiometabolic and mental health of individuals with MS. METHODS A systematic review was conducted of articles published between August 2023 and June 2024 in ScienceDirect, PubMed, and SciELO, following PRISMA guidelines. Inclusion criteria encompassed observational studies, clinical trials, and reviews with high methodological quality. The review focused on Irisin, BDNF, physical exercise, and MS. RESULTS A total of 584 articles were identified, with 43 selected for detailed analysis. The review highlights that physical exercise significantly impacts Irisin and BDNF levels, which in turn influence metabolic and mental health. Irisin, a myokine secreted during exercise, promotes the conversion of white adipose tissue to brown adipose tissue, enhancing energy expenditure and metabolic health. Elevated Irisin levels are associated with improved cognitive function and mental well-being. BDNF, a neurotrophin, supports neuronal growth and cognitive function. Exercise-induced increases in BDNF levels are linked to enhanced neuroplasticity, reduced anxiety, and improved mood. CONCLUSION Understanding the role of Irisin and BDNF in response to physical exercise offers valuable insights for developing strategies to manage and prevent MS and its related mental health issues. Further research is needed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved.

Abstract
This paper bridges critical gaps through proposing a novel, environmentally mediated brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-interactive model that promises to sustain adult hippocampal neurogenesis in humans. It explains how three environmental enrichment mechanisms (physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and mindfulness) can integratively regulate BDNF and other growth factors and neurotransmitters to support neurogenesis at various stages, and how those mechanisms can be promoted by the physical environment. The approach enables the isolation of specific environmental factors and their molecular effects to promote sustainable BDNF regulation by testing the environment's ability to increase BDNF immediately or shortly before it is consumed for muscle repair or brain update. This model offers a novel, feasible method to research environment enrichment and neurogenesis dynamics in real-world human contexts at the immediate molecular level, overcoming the confounds of complex environment settings and challenges of long-term exposure and structural plasticity changes. The model promises to advance understanding of environmental influences on the hippocampus to enhance brain health and cognition. This work bridges fundamental gaps in methodology and knowledge to facilitate more research on the enrichment-neuroplasticity interplay for humans without methodological limitations.

Abstract
Although many efforts have been made to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of COVID-19, critical gaps remain to be explored. This study aimed to investigate potential alterations in adipokine levels (specifically adiponectin, leptin, and resistin) among individuals with COVID-19. Within this population, we further assessed the association between these markers with both, body mass index (BMI) and psychiatric symptoms. This cross-sectional study included an age- and sex-matched sample of adults with COVID-19 (cases) and without COVID-19 (controls). We evaluated the severity of psychiatric symptoms, BMI, and adipokines. Individuals with COVID-19 presented greater BMI, stress levels, and leptin levels when compared to controls. Leptin levels were greater in individuals with moderate/severe COVID-19 as compared to individuals with COVID-19 who were asymptomatic or having mild symptoms. Leptin levels were positively correlated with BMI, severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms, and stress levels in the total sample. Leptin levels were also positively correlated with BMI, severity of anxiety symptoms, and stress levels in controls. In cases, there was a positive correlation between adiponectin and the severity of depressive symptoms and stress levels and leptin/resistin with BMI. A linear regression model revealed that BMI, severity of anxiety symptoms, and the diagnosis of COVID-19 are independently associated with increased leptin levels. Thus, leptin levels seem to be impacted by the COVID-19 infection, anxiety, and BMI.

Abstract
The expression of BDNF in both neuronal and non-neuronal cells is influenced by various stimuli, including prenatal developmental factors and postnatal conditions such as estrogens, dietary habits, and lifestyle factors like obesity, blood pressure, and aging. Central BDNF plays a crucial role in modulating how target tissues respond to these stimuli, influencing the pathogenesis of hypertension, mitigating obesity, and protecting neurons from aging. Thus, BDNF serves as a dynamic mediator of environmental influences, reflecting an individual's unique history of exposure. Estrogens, on the other hand, regulate various processes to maintain overall physiological well-being. Through nuclear estrogen receptors (ERα, ERβ) and the membrane estrogen receptor (GPER1), estrogens modulate transcriptional processes and signaling events that regulate the expression of target genes, such as ERα, components of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), and hormone-sensitive lipase. Estrogens are instrumental in maintaining the set point for blood pressure and energy balance. BDNF and estrogens work cooperatively to prevent obesity by favoring lipolysis, and counteractively regulate blood pressure to adapt to the environment. Estrogen deficiency leads to menopause in women with low central BDNF level. This review delves into the complex mechanisms involving BDNF and estrogen, especially in the context of hypertension and obesity, particularly among postmenopausal women. The insights gained aim to inform the development of comprehensive therapeutic strategies for these prevalent syndromes affecting approximately 68% of adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Regular physical activity plays a crucial role in modulating cellular metabolism and mitigating the progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Multiple Sclerosis. OBJECTIVE The objective of this review is to evaluate the molecular mechanisms by which exercise influences cellular metabolism, with a focus on its potential as a therapeutic intervention for neurological disorders. METHODS A comprehensive literature review was conducted using peer-reviewed scientific articles, with a focus on the period between 2015 and 2024, to analyze the effects of exercise on mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, and metabolic health. RESULTS The findings indicate that exercise promotes mitochondrial biogenesis, enhances oxidative phosphorylation, and reduces reactive oxygen species, contributing to improved energy production and cellular resilience. These metabolic adaptations are associated with delayed disease progression and reduced symptoms in patients with neurodegenerative conditions. Additionally, integrating exercise with nutritional strategies may further enhance therapeutic outcomes by addressing metabolic disturbances comprehensively. CONCLUSIONS This review concludes that personalized exercise protocols should be developed to optimize metabolic benefits for patients with neurological diseases, while future research should focus on biomarker development for individualized treatment approaches. These findings highlight the importance of non-pharmacological interventions in managing neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It is known that symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD) are associated with neurodegeneration, that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can induce symptoms of MDD, and that blood LPS levels are elevated in neurodegeneration. However, it is not known whether blood LPS and cytokine levels correlate with MDD, cognition and brain structure, and this is tested in this study. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This cross-sectional study includes individuals with MDD (n = 100) and a control group of individuals with no one-year history of a mental disorder (n = 50). A comprehensive evaluation is performed, including the collection of basic sociodemographic information, data on smoking status, body mass index, course of MDD, past treatment, comorbid diseases, and current use of medications. Diagnosis of MDD is performed according to the WHO's [2019] International Classification of Diseases and related health problems by psychiatrist and severity of MDD is evaluated using the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Scale. The Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery is used to evaluate cognitive functioning. Venous blood samples are taken to measure genetic and inflammatory markers, and multiparametric brain magnetic resonance imaging is performed to evaluate for blood-brain barrier permeability, structural and neurometabolic brain changes. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including linear and logistic regression, will be used to analyse relationships between blood plasma LPS and inflammatory cytokine concentrations in MDD patients and controls. The proposed sample sizes are suitable for identifying significant differences between the groups, according to a power analysis. Abstract
This study aimed to analyze how active versus passive rest periods after a warm-up influence performance in psychomotor vigilance tasks (PVT). Twenty amateur karate athletes participated in a randomized cross-over study consisting of two sessions with either a 20 min active rest involving kata techniques or passive rest. PVT was administered before and after these conditions to assess the changes in reaction time. The results revealed that the active rest condition significantly improved reaction times compared to both the passive rest condition (F(1,31) = 5.34, p = 0.03, η2 partial = 0.14) and control condition (F(1,31) = 5.49, p = 0.02, η2 partial = 0.15). No significant time-on-task effects were observed, F(4,120) = 2.31, p = 0.06, and there were no significant interactions between effort condition and time-on-task, F(4,120) = 1.89, p = 0.11). Participating in an active rest period post-warm-up improves cognitive performance in karate athletes, as evidenced by quicker reaction times in the PVT. This finding supports the use of active rest strategies (involving kata techniques) to maintain and improve cognitive readiness in young karate athletes.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of physical activity (PA) (both general and its type) on self-esteem during and after cancer treatment. A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SPORTDiscuss, and PsycINFO from their inception to February 2024. The systematic review included 32 studies, with 15 studies (13 RCT and 2 quasi-experimental) and 3604 participants (66.7% female) included in the meta-analysis involving controlled trials using a control group and at least one PA intervention group. The study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022309771). Risk of bias for RCTs was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias (RoB2), and quasi-experimental studies with the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool. PA significantly improved self-esteem during and after cancer treatment (pooled SMD = 0.32, p < 0.01). Specifically, aerobic PA (pooled SMD = 0.33, p = 0.04) and mind-body exercise (pooled SMD = 0.70, p = 0.03) had positive effects on self-esteem. Overall, PA interventions improved self-esteem during cancer treatment (pooled SMD = 0.50, p = 0.01) and in PA interventions lasting more than 12 weeks (pooled SMD = 0.44, p = 0.02). In conclusion, PA (specifically, aerobic and mind-body exercises) may have a positive effect on self-esteem during and after cancer treatment, with cancer status and the duration of the intervention being key factors.

Abstract
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) may help the brain resist both functional and structural neurodegeneration, which is critical for maintaining cognitive and neurological health in older adults. This meta-analysis and meta-regression seek to elucidate the impact of physical activity on these biomarker levels in healthy seniors, as well as to examine the influence of several moderator factors, including age, sex, period length, and time, for the first time. The standardized mean effect metric was used to assess the influence of weights, which reflected each group's relative importance in comparison to baseline data. The study looked at potential moderating factors including age, gender, and physical activity levels. The analysis of 11 studies indicated no significant effect of physical activity on VEGF levels [0.328, CI 95 % (-0.871 to 1.52); I2 = 0.00; p = 0.592; Q = 4.14]. Physical activity had a substantial impact on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (0.827, 95 % confidence interval: 0.487 to 1.16; I2 = 0.00; p = 0.00; Q = 78.46), with females showing particularly notable effects (Tau2 = 0.327, Tau = 0.571, I2 = 80.90 %, Q = 68.05, df = 15, p = 0.00). Physical activity also had a substantial effect on insulin-like growth factor 1 (0.276, 95 % confidence interval: 0.065 to 0.487; I2 = 0.00; p = 0.10; Q = 8.35), indicating that it positively influences IGF-1 levels. Overall, while physical exercise has a significant effect on BDNF and IGF-1, more research is needed to fully understand its impact on vascular endothelial growth factor and to investigate how individual characteristics may influence exercise outcomes.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by repetitive behaviors and altered communication abilities. Exercise is a low-cost intervention that could improve cognitive function and improve brain plasticity mechanisms. Here, the valproic acid (VPA) model was utilized to induce ASD-like phenotypes in rodents. Animals were exercised on a treadmill and performance was evaluated on a cognitive flexibility task. Biomarkers related to exercise and plasticity regulation were quantified from the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and skeletal muscle. Exercised VPA animals had higher levels of hippocampal BDNF compared to sedentary VPA animals and upregulated antioxidant enzyme expression in skeletal muscle. Cognitive improvements were demonstrated in both sexes, but in different domains of cognitive flexibility. This research demonstrates the benefits of exercise and provides evidence that molecular responses to exercise occur in both the central nervous system and in the periphery. These results suggest that improving regulation of BDNF via exercise, even at low intensity, could provide better synaptic regulation and cognitive benefits for individuals with ASD.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are a class of neurological disorders marked by the progressive loss of neurons that afflict millions of people worldwide. These illnesses affect brain connection, impairing memory, cognition, behavior, sensory perception, and motor function. Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases are examples of common NDDs, which frequently include the buildup of misfolded proteins. Cognitive-behavioral impairments are early markers of neurodevelopmental disorders, emphasizing the importance of early detection and intervention. Neurotrophins such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are critical for neuron survival and synaptic plasticity, which is required for learning and memory. NDDs have been associated with decreased BDNF levels. Physical exercise, a non-pharmacological intervention, benefits brain health by increasing BDNF levels, lowering cognitive deficits, and slowing brain degradation. Exercise advantages include increased well-being, reduced depression, improved cognitive skills, and neuroprotection by lowering amyloid accumulation, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. This study examines the effects of physical exercise on cognitive-behavioral deficits and BDNF levels in the limbic system impacted by neurodegeneration. The findings highlight the necessity of including exercise into NDD treatment to improve brain structure, function, and total BDNF levels. As research advances, exercise is becoming increasingly acknowledged as an important technique for treating cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders.

Abstract
An active lifestyle is of key importance for reduction of obesity and inflammation, as well as circulating levels of adipokines. Therefore, the aim of our study was to assess the relationship of physical fitness with chronic inflammatory status, and to evaluate biomarkers useful in the analysis of adipose tissue dysfunction. Sixty-three older adults (69.6 ± 5.1 years) were allocated to a high n = 31 (women n = 23 and men n = 8 male) or low physical fitness n = 32 (women n = 29 and men n = 3) group based on gait speed values (1.4-1.8 m/s or ≤ 1.3 m/s). The gait speed correlated with hand grip strength (rs = 0.493, p = 0.0001) and with leptin level (R = -0.372, p = 0.003), which shows the benefits of physical activity on muscle strength and circulating adipokines. In low physical fitness group, 58.1% individuals had adiponectin to leptin ratio (Adpn/Lep) < 0.5 revealing dysfunction of adipose tissue and high cardiometabolic risk; 20% of the group were obese with BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2. In high physical fitness group, 25.8% of individuals had Adpn/Lep ≥ 1.0 i.e., within the reference range. Markers of systemic inflammation were significantly related to physical fitness: CRP/gait speed (rs = -0.377) and HMGB-1/gait speed (rs = -0.264). The results of the ROC analysis for Adpn (AUC = 0.526), Lep (AUC = 0.745) and HMGB-1 (AUC = 0.689) indicated their diagnostic potential for clinical prognosis in older patients. The optimal threshold values corresponded to 1.2 μg/mL for Adpn (sensitivity 74.2%, specificity 41.9%, OR = 1.4, 95%Cl 0.488-3.902), 6.7 ng/mL for Lep (sensitivity 56.2%, specificity 93.5%, OR = 14.8, 95%Cl 3.574-112.229), 2.63 mg/L for CRP (sensitivity 51.6%, specificity 84.3%, OR = 4.4, 95% Cl 1.401- 16.063) and 34.2 ng/mL for HMGB-1 (sensitivity 62.0%, specificity 86.6%, OR = 12.0, 95%Cl 3.254-61.614). The highest sensitivity and specificity were observed for Leptin and HMGB-1. The study revealed changes in inflammatory status in older adults at various levels of physical fitness and demonstrated diagnostic usefulness of adipokines in the assessment of adipose tissue inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) on cognition is thought to be mediated by brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Aerobic exercise can increase CRF through various activities, including sports participation. The relationship between these factors in females has yet to be elucidated. OBJECTIVE This review aims to map the current literature on the effects of aerobic exercise, sports participation, and CRF in healthy adult females, with sub-topics of pregnancy and menstrual cycle periodicity. METHODS A scoping review of the literature was conducted following PRISMA guidelines and the PCC mnemonic (population, concept, and context). The following five databases were screened: CINAHL, Medline, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and Scopus. Eligible articles included healthy adult females, investigated aerobic exercise, sports participation or CRF, and linked outcomes to cognition. Data from included manuscripts was extracted and analyzed. Two sub-population groupings (pregnant individuals and menstrual cycle) were established to further aid the interpretation of the findings. RESULTS Of the 300 titles and abstracts screened, 74 were eligible for full-text screening, and 28 were included in the scoping review. Of the 28 included, 14 did not control for or report on menstrual cycle phase or sex hormones. CONCLUSION This scoping review found an inverse 'U' relationship between aerobic exercise and cognition, demonstrating an optimal dose of aerobic exercise to benefit cognitive functions. As estrogen may impact the relationship between CRF and neural growth factors, more research is needed on this pathway, independent of the menstrual cycle, to determine potential beneficial effects. It is currently unknown whether sports participation can independently impact cognition.

Abstract
Massage is one of the oldest forms of therapy practiced since ancient times. Nowadays, it is used in sports practice, recovery from injury, or supportive therapy for various conditions. The practice of massage uses a variety of instruments that facilitate massaging while relieving the stress on the masseur. One of them is a foam roller. Although roller massage is widely used, there are still no scientific studies describing the biological mechanisms of its effects on the body. The purpose of our study was to analyze the effect of roller massage on BDNF levels in men undergoing self-massage 4x/week/7 weeks. The control group consisted of men who did not perform self-massage. Before the test and after the first, third, fifth, and seventh weeks of self-massage, the study participants' blood was drawn, the serum BDNF was determined, and the results were subjected to analysis of variance by ANOVA test. After the first week of self-massage, an increase in BDNF concentration was observed in the self-massage group compared to the control group (p = 0.023). Similarly, changes were observed in week five (p = 0.044) and week seven (p = 0.046). In the massaged group, BDNF concentrations were significantly higher after the first week of self-massage compared to baseline. In the third week of the study, BDNF decreased to a value comparable to the baseline study, then increased significantly in the fifth and seventh weeks compared to the value recorded in the third week (p = 0.049 and p = 0.029). It was significantly higher in week seven compared to week five (p = 0.03). Higher concentrations of BDNF in subjects undergoing roller self-massage may be one of the biological mechanisms justifying the therapeutic effects of massage in both sports and clinical practice. Studies analyzing the stimulation of BDNF synthesis through various massage techniques should be performed on a larger group of healthy individuals, patients after trauma of multiple origins, and sick people with indications for therapeutic massage.

Abstract
Variable resistance training has been widely used in athletic preparation. OBJECTIVES To analyze the use of currents (VRT) and the traditional method (TRAD) on speed, power and temperature in a training session. METHODS Fourteen paralympic powerlifting (PP) athletes took part over three weeks. In week 1, familiarization and 1RM tests took place, and, in weeks 2 and 3, pre- and post-training took place, where the propulsive mean velocity and power and temperatures were assessed before and after, at 24 h and 48 h. RESULTS There was a difference in the sternal pectoral temperatures before and after VRT (p = 0.040) and at 48 h for TRAD and VRT (p = 0.018); in the clavicular pectoralis before and after VRT and TRAD (p = 0.003); in the anterior deltoid after and at 48 h for TRAD and VRT (p = 0.026 and p = 0.017); and in the triceps after and at 24 h and 48 h between TRAD and VRT (p = 0.005). In the training series, the MPV was significant in TRAD between Set1 and Set5 (p = 0.003), in training (VRT) between Set1 and Set5 (p = 0.001) and in Set5 between the methods (p = 0.047). For power, there was a difference between Set1 and 5 in TRAD (p = 0.016) and VRT (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION We conclude that training with currents (VRT) promoted greater muscle fatigue when compared to traditional training.

Abstract
Background Alterations in the circulating concentrations and target-tissue action of organokines underpin the development of insulin resistance in microgravity and gravity deprivation. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in circulating adropin, irisin, retinol binding protein-4 (RBP4), and the metabolic response of healthy young males following 60 days of 6° head-down-tilt (HDT) bed rest, with and without reactive jump training (RJT), to explore links with whole-body and tissue-specific insulin sensitivity. To our knowledge, this is the first time that adropin, irisin, and RBP4 have been studied in HDT bed rest. Methods A total of 23 male subjects (29 ± 6 years, 181 ± 6 cm, 77 ± 7 kg) were exposed to 60 days of 6° HDT bed rest and randomized to a control (CTRL, n = 11) or a RJT (JUMP, n = 12) group (48 sessions with ≤4 min total training time per session). Circulating adropin, irisin, and RBP4 were quantified in fasting serum before and after HDT bed rest. A subanalysis was performed a posteriori to investigate individual metabolic responses post-HDT bed rest based on subjects that showed an increase or decrease in whole-body insulin sensitivity (Matsuda index). Results There were significant main effects of time, but not group, for decreases in adropin, irisin, Matsuda index, and liver insulin sensitivity following HDT bed rest (p < 0.05), whereas RBP4 did not change. The subanalysis identified that in a subgroup with decreased whole-body insulin sensitivity (n = 17), RBP4 increased significantly, whereas adropin, irisin, and liver insulin sensitivity were all decreased significantly following HDT bed rest. Conversely, in a subgroup with increased whole-body insulin sensitivity (n = 6), liver insulin sensitivity increased significantly after HDT bed rest, whereas adropin, irisin, and RBP4 did not change. Conclusion Investigating individual metabolic responses has provided insights into changes in circulating adropin, irisin, RBP4, in relation to insulin sensitivity following HDT bed rest. We conclude that adropin, irisin, and RBP4 are candidate biomarkers for providing insights into whole-body and tissue-specific insulin sensitivity to track changes in physiological responsiveness to a gravity deprivation intervention in a lean male cohort.

Abstract
Pain accompanied by depressive symptoms is a common reason for seeking medical assistance, and many chronic pain patients experience comorbid depression. The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a well-known neurotrophin expressed throughout the nervous system, playing a crucial role in neuronal growth and neuroplasticity. This study aimed to examine the effects of exercise on BDNF expression in the nervous system and reserpine (RSP)-induced pain-depression dyad. RSP (1 mg/kg) was subcutaneously administered once daily for three days in mice. The exercise was performed using a rota-rod tester for seven consecutive days following RSP administration. Pain responses were evaluated using von Frey filaments, and depression-like behaviors were assessed through forced swimming and open field tests. Immunofluorescence staining was performed to examine the changes in BDNF expression in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG), spinal cord, and hippocampus. Administration of RSP reduced mechanical paw withdrawal threshold, increased immobility time in the forced swimming test, and decreased movement in the open field test. The immunoreactivity of BDNF was increased in the DRG and spinal dorsal regions, and decreased in the hippocampus after RSP administration. Physical exercise significantly reduced the RSP-induced mechanical hypersensitivity and depression-like behaviors. In addition, exercise suppressed not only the increased expression of BDNF in the DRG and spinal dorsal regions but also the decreased expression of BDNF in the hippocampus induced by RSP administration. These findings suggest that repetitive exercise could serve as an effective and non-invasive treatment option for individuals experiencing both pain and depression by modulating BDNF expression.

Abstract
Purpose The cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and nerve growth factor (NGF) have been proposed as key modulators of brain health and are involved in synaptic plasticity. The study investigates how combined water-based training affects hippocampal neuron plasticity and memory function in old rats. Methods 16 Wistar male rats 24-month-old were randomly divided into two groups: combined training (n = 8) and control (n = 8). Four sessions were performed per week for 10 weeks, and consisted of resistance and endurance training in water. The control group was placed in a water container during training for 30 minutes to be homogenized in terms of the stress conditions. The.NGF and CREB genes in the hippocampus were evaluated and the working memory was measured using real-time PCR and Y-maze tests. The SPSS 26 software was utilized in which independent t-tests were used to analyze the genes and the Mann-Whitney U test was used to analyze functional memory with a significant level of (P < 0.05). Results The combined training resulted in a significant rise in NGF and CREB gene expression in the hippocampus tissue of elderly rats compared to the control group (P < 0.05); however, there was no notable difference in the Y maze performance test between the two groups (P < 0.05). Conclusions These findings suggest that water-based combined training has beneficial effects on gene expression of NGF and CREB; however, it is necessary to conduct more studies to comprehend the effects of combined training on memory function.

Abstract
AIM To determine the treatment effect of resistance training in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression in young people. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, PsychINFO, and PubMed for articles published in English from January 1980 to September 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCT) that included at least 4 weeks of resistance training, with participants aged 26 years or younger with clinically elevated anxiety and depression symptoms. A random-effects meta-analysis was used to calculate a pooled effect size of resistance training pre-and post-intervention compared to control groups. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias 2 (RoB 2) and Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria. RESULTS Ten RCTs involving 376 participants (209 females and 127 males) across educational, clinical, and community based setting were eligible for inclusion in the analysis. Resistance training was associated with a significant reduction in depressive (Hedge's g = -1.06, 95% CI -1.61 to -0.51, p < .001) and anxiety (Hedge's g = -1.02, 95% CI -1.50 to -0.54, p < .001) symptoms. Substantial heterogeneity was observed in the analysis of depression symptoms (I2 = 79%) and anxiety symptoms (I2 = 66%). Six trials had a low risk of bias, four trials showed some concerns. The GRADE analysis demonstrated a high level of certainty for depressive symptoms and a moderate level for anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSION Resistance training is an effective intervention in reducing depression and anxiety symptoms in young people, delivered across a range of settings. Future trials exploring the effect resistance training interventions with long-term follow up are warranted to understand the outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eating frequency (EF) focuses on the total number of eating occasions per day and may influence metabolic health. OBJECTIVES We sought to examine the effect of high compared with low EF on appetite regulation and inflammatory biomarkers among healthy adults. METHODS Data are from a randomized, crossover trial (the Frequency of Eating and Satiety Hormones study). Participants (n = 50) completed 2 isocaloric 21-d study periods of low EF (3 eating occasions/d) and high EF (6 eating occasions/d) in random order with a 14-d washout period in between. Participants were free-living and consumed their own food, using study-directed, structured meal plans with identical foods and total energy in both study periods. On days 1 and 21 of each EF period, fasting blood was collected during in-person clinic visits to assess plasma concentrations of ghrelin, leptin, adiponectin, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Linear mixed models with EF, diet sequence, and period as fixed effects and participant as random effect were used to estimate the intervention effect. Interaction effects between EF and body fat percentage were examined. RESULTS Among the 50 participants who completed the trial, 39 (78%) were women, 30 (60%) were Non-Hispanic White, and 40 (80%) had a body mass index of <25 kg/m2, and the mean age was 32.1 y. The differences between high and low EF in fasting ghrelin (geometric mean difference: 17.76 ng/mL; P = 0.60), leptin (geometric mean difference: 2.09 ng/mL; P = 0.14), adiponectin (geometric mean difference: 381.7 ng/mL; P = 0.32), and hs-CRP (geometric mean difference: -0.018 mg/dL; P = 0.08) were not statistically significant. No significant interaction was observed between EF and body fat percentage on appetite regulation and inflammatory biomarkers. CONCLUSIONS No differences was observed in fasting ghrelin, leptin, adiponectin, and hs-CRP comparing high and low EF. Future studies are needed to understand the physiology of EF and appetite as they relate to metabolic health. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02392897.

Abstract
Postnatal immune activation (PIA) induces persistent glial activation in the brain and causes various neuropathologies in adults. Exercise training improves stress-related mood disorders; however, the role of exercise in psychiatric disorders induced by early-life immune activation and the association between exercise training and glial activation remain unclear. We compared the effects of different exercise intensities on the PIA model, including high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). Both HIIT and MICT in adolescent mice inhibited neuroinflammation, remodeled synaptic plasticity, and improved PIA-induced mood disorders in adulthood. Importantly, HIIT was superior to MICT in terms of reducing inflammation and increasing body weight. RNA-seq of prefrontal cortex (PFC) tissues revealed a gene expression pattern, confirming that HIIT was more effective than MICT in improving brain glial cell activation through epigenetic modifications of KDM6B. We investigated the role of KDM6B, a specific histone lysine demethylation enzyme - histone 3 lysine 27 demethylase, in inhibiting glial activation against PIA-induced depression and anxiety by regulating the expression of IL-4 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Overall, our data support the idea that HIIT improves PIA-induced mood disorders by regulating KDM6B-mediated epigenetic mechanisms and indicate that HIIT might be superior to MICT in improving mood disorders with PIA in mice. Our findings provide new insights into the treatment of anxiety and depression disorders.

Abstract
Neuroplasticity is an essential mechanism by which the nervous system shapes and adapts according to functional requirements. Evidence suggests that physical exercise induces a cascade of cellular processes that favours brain plasticity. The Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin closely linked to neuroplasticity that can be increased due to exercise. To verify the effects of therapeutic exercise on neuroplasticity and/or peripheral BDNF levels in neurological conditions in adults, such as stroke, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases and mild cognitive impairment and address its clinical relevance in the treatment of neurological dysfunctions. A systematic review was carried using PUBMED, Web of Science and Scopus databases. Inclusion criteria were: randomized controlled trials or pilot studies; humans with age > 18 yrs with neurological condition; English language; score ≥ 6 in PEDro Scale (moderate to high quality). Reviews, meta-analyses and other articles that did not meet the criteria were excluded. The PRISMA methodology was applied for studies' selection. A total of 9 studies were selected for a systematic and comprehensive analysis. According to these studies, moderate to high intensity aerobic exercise (AE), increases the level of peripheral BDNF and positively influences functional gains in neurological conditions. Larger outcomes are observed in protocols with minimum session duration of 30 minutes, frequency of 3 times/week and intervention duration of 4 weeks. Current evidence shows that moderate to high intensity AE induces neuroplasticity in neurological patients, thus being a fundamental therapeutic strategy to include in interventions aiming to repair/delay neurological dysfunctions.

Abstract
Exercise training is a valuable tool for improving body weight and composition in overweight or obese adults, which leads to a negative energy balance. It is relevant to consider whether exercise can help people lose weight or prevent weight gain because any energy expended in exercise increases the severity of hunger and promotes food consumption. Over the past decade, the identification of the circulating peptide ghrelin, which alerts the brain to the body's nutritional state, has significantly expanded our understanding of this homeostatic mechanism that controls appetite and body weight. To shed more light on this issue, we decided to investigate the effects of resistance and endurance training on plasma ghrelin and leptin levels. In addition, we sought to understand the mechanisms by which acute and chronic exercise can regulate hunger. This review analyzes studies published in the last fifteen years that focused on changes suffered by ghrelin, leptin, or both after physical exercise in overweight or obese individuals. Most studies have shown a decrease in leptin levels and an increase in ghrelin levels in these cases. Exercise regimens that support weight maintenance need further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies demonstrated that variations of fT3, even within the euthyroid range, can influence cardiac function. Our aim was to investigate whether thyroid hormones, even within the euthyroid range, are associated with the magnitude of exercise-induced cardiac remodeling in Olympic athletes. METHODS We evaluated 1342 Olympic athletes (mean age 25.6 ± 5.1) practicing different sporting disciplines (power, skills, endurance, and mixed). Athletes underwent blood testing (thyroid stimulating hormone, fT3, and fT4), echocardiography, and exercise-stress testing. Athletes taking thyroid hormones, affected by thyroiditis, or presenting TSH out of ranges were excluded. RESULTS The level of thyroid hormones varied according to the type of sporting discipline practiced: endurance athletes presented the lowest TSH (p < 0.0001), fT3 (p = 0.007), and fT4 (p < 0.0001) in comparison to the remaining ones. Resting heart rate (HR) was positively correlated to fT3 in athletes of different disciplines (power: p = 0.0002, R2 = 0.04; skill: p = 0.0009, R2 = 0.05; endurance: p = 0.007, R2 = 0.03; and mixed: p = 0.04, R2 = 0.01). The same results were seen for peak HR in the exercise-stress test in athletes engaged in power, skill, and endurance (respectively, p < 0.0001, R2 = 0.04; p = 0.01, R2 = 0.04; and p = 0.005, R2 = 0.02). Moreover, a positive correlation was observed with cardiac dimensions, i.e., interventricular septum (power: p < 0.0001, R2 = 0.11; skill: p = 0.02, R2 = 0.03; endurance: p = 0.002, R2 = 0.03; mixed: p < 0.0001, R2 = 0.04). Furthermore, fT3 was directly correlated with the left ventricle (LV) end-diastolic volume in skills (p = 0.04, R2 = 0.03), endurance (p = 0.04, R2 = 0.01), and mixed (p = 0.04, R2 = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Thyroid hormones, even within the euthyroid range, are associated with cardiac adaptive response to exercise and may contribute to exercise-induced cardiac remodeling.

Context Intermittent fasting (IF) and exercise training (Exe) have been evaluated in several studies for improving cardiometabolic biomarkers related to weight loss. However, further investigation is required to understand the potential effects on leptin and adiponectin concentrations. IF protocols have been shown to be efficient in improving adipokines, but further research is required to determine whether or not IF regimens combined with Exe are superior to Exe alone. Objective The aim of this study was to determine whether or not interventions combining IF plus Exe are more effective than Exe only for improving serum leptin and adiponectin in adults with and without obesity. Data extraction A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed by searching PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to August 2023 for randomized clinical trials that determined the effects of IF plus Exe vs. Exe alone (control) on body weight, serum leptin, and serum adiponectin. Analyses were conducted for IF plus Exe vs. Exe alone to calculate weighted mean differences (WMD) and standardized mean differences (SMD). Analysis The current meta-analysis included 6 studies with a total sample of 153 participants, with intervention durations ranging from three days to 52 weeks. IF plus Exe elicited significantly larger decreases in leptin levels [SMD = -0.47, p = 0.03], which were accompanied by weight loss [WMD = -1.25 kg, p = 0.05], as compared with exercise-only interventions, but adiponectin did not differ between the two [SMD = 0.02, p = 0.9]. Conclusion IF combined with Exe reduced leptin significantly, but did not change adiponectin levels, when compared to exercise only. Perhaps these reductions in leptin levels may have been associated with weight loss; however, due to the small number of included studies and the high heterogeneity in the weight loss outcomes, this result is uncertain. Abstract
The TBS is a new method for clinicians to assess the bone quality. It is directly related to the mechanical strength of bone and helps predict fracture risk. The present analysis aimed to investigate the associations between serum PTH levels and TBS by analyzing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). A total of 3516 participants from the NHANES 2005-2006 were included in this cross-sectional study. The independent variable was serum PTH, and the outcome variable was TBS. The associations of serum PTH levels with TBS were examined using multivariable linear regression models. After adjusting for covariates, there was a negative association between serum PTH level and TBS (β = - 0.0034; 95% confidence interval, - 0.0050 to - 0.0017). However, in the subgroup analysis stratified by gender, race, and age, this association became negative only in Non-Hispanic White (β = - 0.0047, 95% CI: - 0.0071 to - 0.0048) and young people (age < 60) (β = - 0.0036, 95% CI: - 0.0057, - 0.0016), regardless of gender. In addition, the association of serum PTH with TBS was an U-shaped curve, with a point of inflection at 6.71 pmol/L. This study showed that serum PTH level was negatively associated with TBS. Maintaining PTH levels in a lower reasonable clinical range may be beneficial to bone health, especially for young non-Hispanic white.

Abstract
Exposure to high altitude might cause the body to adapt with negative energy and fluid balance that compromise body composition and physical performance. In this field study involving 12 healthy adults, sex-balanced, and aged 29 ± 4 years with a body mass index of 21.6 ± 1.8 kg/m2, we investigated the effects of a 4-day trekking up to 4556 m a.s.l. on Monte Rosa (Alps, Italy). The food intake was recorded using food diaries and nutrient averages were calculated. The bio-impedance analysis was performed at low and high altitudes, and a wearable biosensor (Swemax) was used to track hydro-saline losses in two participants. Daily total energy intake was 3348 ± 386 kcal for males and 2804 ± 415 kcal for females (13%-14% protein, 35% fat, 44%-46% carbohydrates). Although there was a significant body weight loss (65.0 ± 9.3 vs. 64.2 ± 9.10 kg, p < 0.001, d = 1.398), no significant changes in body composition parameter were found but a trend in the increase of the bioelectrical phase angle in males (p = 0.059, d = -0.991). Body water percentage significantly changed (p = 0.026, η2 p = 0.440), but the absolute water did not, suggesting that the weight loss was not due to water loss. Salivary and urinary osmolality did not change. A reduction in sweat rate at higher altitudes was observed in both participants. Interestingly, salivary leptin increased (p = 0.014, η2 p = 0.510), and salivary ghrelin decreased (p = 0.036, η2 p = 0.403). Therefore, the 4-day trekking at altitude of hypoxia exposure induced changes in satiety and appetite hormones. High altitude expeditions require more specific nutritional guidance, and using multiplex analysis could help in monitoring fluid balance and body composition.

Abstract
Lifestyle modification represents the first-line strategy for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which is frequently associated with obesity and characterized by defective pancreatic insulin secretion and/or insulin resistance. Exercise training is an essential component of lifestyle modification and has been shown to ameliorate insulin resistance by reducing body fat mass and by enhancing skeletal muscle mitochondrial biogenesis and insulin-independent glucose uptake. Additionally, exercising stimulates the release of exerkines such as metabolites or cytokines, but also long non-coding RNA, microRNAs, cell-free DNA (cf-DNA), and extracellular vesicles (EVs), which contribute to inter-tissue communication. There is emerging evidence that EV number and content are altered in obesity and T2DM and may be involved in several metabolic processes, specifically either worsening or improving insulin resistance. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the metabolic effects of exercise training and on the potential role of humoral factors and EV as new biomarkers for early diagnosis and tailored treatment of T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer-related depression is a well-documented condition that significantly impacts long-term quality of life. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a neurotrophin essential for neurogenesis and neuronal plasticity, has been implicated in various neuropsychological disorders including depression associated with cancer. Cytokines, on the other hand, play a crucial role in regulating depression, potentially by influencing BDNF expression. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), a key immune regulator within the tumor microenvironment, has been found to elevate BDNF levels, establishing a link between peripheral immune responses and depression. The study aims to investigate the correlation of TGF-β and BDNF in cancer-related depression. METHODS This study involved a cohort of 153 gynecological patients, including 61 patients with gynecological cancer and 92 patients without cancer. Depression levels were assessed using the subscale of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-D), and TGF-β and BDNF plasma levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS The study revealed elevated plasma TGF-β levels in patients with cancer (32.24 ± 22.93 ng/ml) compared to those without cancer (25.24 ± 19.72 ng/ml) (P = 0.046). Additionally, reduced levels of BDNF were observed in patients presenting depression symptoms (44.96 ± 41.06 pg/ml) compared to those without depression (133.5 ± 176.7 pg/ml) (P = 0.036). Importantly, a significant correlation between TGF-β and BDNF was found in patients without cancer but with depression (correlation coefficient = 0.893, **P < 0.01). Interestingly, cancer appeared to influence the association between TGF-β and BDNF in patients with depression, as evidenced by a significant difference in the correlation of TGF-β and BDNF between cancer and non-cancer groups (P = 0.041). CONCLUSIONS These findings underscore the active involvement of TGF-β and BDNF crosstalk in the context of cancer-related depression.

Abstract
Obesity is a major global health concern linked to cognitive impairment and neurological disorders. Circulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein crucial for neuronal growth and survival, plays a vital role in brain function and plasticity. Notably, obese individuals tend to exhibit lower BDNF levels, potentially contributing to cognitive decline. Physical exercise offers health benefits, including improved circulating BDNF levels and cognitive function, but the specific impacts of acute versus regular exercise on circulating BDNF levels in obesity are unclear. Understanding this can guide interventions to enhance brain health and counter potential cognitive decline in obese individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the impact of acute and regular physical exercise on circulating BDNF in individuals with obesity. The target population comprised individuals classified as overweight or obese, encompassing both acute and chronic protocols involving all training methods. A comprehensive search was conducted across computerized databases, including PubMed, Academic Search Complete, and Web of Science, in August 2022, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Initially, 98 studies were identified, from which 16 studies, comprising 23 trials, met the selection criteria. Substantial heterogeneity was observed for both acute (I2 = 80.4%) and long-term effects (I2 = 88.7%), but low risk of bias for the included studies. A single session of exercise increased circulating BDNF levels among obese patients compared to the control group (ES = 1.25, 95% CI = 0.19 to 2.30, p = 0.021). However, with extended periods of physical exercise, there was no significant increase in circulating BDNF levels when compared to the control group (ES = 0.49, 95% CI = -0.08 to 1.06, p = 0.089). These findings highlight the need to consider exercise duration and type when studying neurobiological responses in obesity and exercise research. The study's results have implications for exercise prescription in obesity management and highlight the need for tailored interventions to optimize neurotrophic responses. Future research should focus on elucidating the adaptive mechanisms and exploring novel strategies to enhance BDNF modulation through exercise in this population. However, further research is needed considering limitations such as the potential age-related confounding effects due to diverse participant ages, lack of sex-specific analyses, and insufficient exploration of how specific exercise parameters (e.g., duration, intensity, type) impact circulating BDNF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A growing number of studies have found that physical activity (PA) benefits mental health, and sedentary behavior (SB) increases the risk of psychological symptoms, but it remains unclear whether substituting the duration of different activities may affect the association, and whether sex difference exists among college students. METHODS A longitudinal survey was conducted in three colleges in Anhui province, China. A total of 8049 participants validly answered the questionnaire, which included demographic variables, PA, SB and negative emotions (depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms). RESULTS Substituting 30 min per day of SB with equivalent walking was associated with lower scores of depressive symptoms. Stress symptoms were reduced when SB was substituted by moderate intensity PA (MPA) and walking. Substituting 30 min per day of MPA in place of walking and SB was associated with an amelioration of depressive and stress symptoms in females, and a reallocation of 30 min walking was associated with lower depressive and stress symptom scores when SB was replaced in males. CONCLUSIONS Replacing SB with walking and MPA ameliorates the depressive and stress symptoms in young adults. The results suggest a reallocation of time from SB or walking to MPA in females while from SB to walking in males may markedly reduce the depressive and stress symptoms in college population.

Abstract
Aversive caregiving in early life is a risk factor for aberrant brain and behavioral development. This outcome is related to epigenetic dysregulation of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (Bdnf) gene. The Bdnf gene encodes for BDNF, a neurotrophin involved in early brain development, neural plasticity, learning, and memory. Recent work suggests that exercise may be neuroprotective in part by supporting BDNF protein and gene expression, making it an exciting target for therapeutic interventions. To our knowledge, exercise has never been studied as a therapeutic intervention in preclinical rodent models of caregiver maltreatment. To that end, the current study investigated the effect of an adult voluntary wheel running intervention on Bdnf methylation and expression in the prefrontal cortex of rats who experienced aversive caregiving in infancy. We employed a rodent model (Long Evans rats) wherein rat pups experienced intermittent caregiver-induced stress from postnatal days 1-7 and were given voluntary access to a running wheel (except in the control condition) from postnatal days 70-90 as a young adulthood treatment intervention. Our results indicate that maltreatment and exercise affect Bdnf gene methylation in an exon, CG site, and sex-specific manner. Here we add to a growing body of evidence of the ability for our experiences, including exercise, to permeate the brain. Keywords: Early life stress, Bdnf, exercise, prefrontal cortex.

Abstract
Several types of non-coding RNAs such as circRNAs, lncRNAs, and miRNAs have been identified to regulate mRNAs through the mechanism known as the competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network. To explore the role of the ceRNA regulatory network in the immune microenvironment of bladder cancer, whole-transcriptome sequencing of bladder tumor and its peritumoral tissues from 38 bladder cancer patients, with a total of 63 samples, was performed to screen differentially expressed circ-, lnc-, mi-, and mRNAs to construct a circ/lnc-mi-mRNA regulatory network with pruning algorithms. We excavated a key immune-related gene BDNF to build the final ceRNA network as hsa-miR-107 sponged by hsa-circ-000211, AC108488.1, and LINC00163. Finally, a meta-analysis of 7 public datasets demonstrated that low expression of BDNF and high expression of hsa-miR-107 were associated with longer survival. Our study identified a ceRNA regulatory network as a potentially new prognostic marker and molecular therapeutic target of bladder cancer.
