Abstract
The association between gestational weight gain (GWG) and postpartum depression (PPD) is still controversial. The present study aimed to assess the association between GWG and the risk of developing PPD by means of a meta-analysis. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, China Biology Medicine disk, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Weipu, and Wanfang database were searched up to May 19, 2021 to identify relevant studies that evaluated the association between GWG and PPD. Meta-analysis was conducted by using RevMan software and Stata software. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were carried out to explore the potential heterogeneity source, and Begg's funnel plots and Begg's linear regression test were performed to assess the potential publication bias. A total of sixteen studies involving 100,438 participants were identified in this study. Overall, the total, excessive and inadequate GWG was significantly associated with a higher risk of developing PPD. These results emphasize the necessity of strengthening the prevention and intervention of excessive and inadequate weight gain during pregnancy to promote maternal and infant health. However, further studies on the association between GWG at different stages of pregnancy and the risk of developing PPD are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A few studies have reported phthalate exposure as a risk factor for depressive symptoms, but the results have been inconsistent. Whether chronic inflammation mediates the relationship between phthalates (PAEs) and depressive symptoms remains unclear. In this study, we establish mediating models of inflammatory factors and explore the mediating role of chronic inflammation in the association between PAEs exposure and depressive symptoms. METHODS The sample included 989 participants from the Study on Health and Environment of the Elderly in Lu'an City, Anhui Province. Geriatric depression scale (GDS-30) was used to screen depressive symptoms of the elderly. The levels of seven kinds of PAEs in urine samples and four inflammatory factors in serum of the elderly were measured. To establish the mediating effect of inflammatory factors to explore the potential effect of PAEs exposure on the increased odds of depressive symptoms. RESULTS Adjusted for multiple variables, the highest tertiles of Mono (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) (95%CI = 1.051-2.112), Mono benzyl phthalate (MBzP) (95%CI = 1.016-2.082) and Mono butyl phthalate (MBP) (95%CI = 1.102-2.262) were positively correlated with depressive symptoms. The mediating effect of IL-6 and generalized inflammation factor between MEHP exposure and depressive symptoms were 15.96% (95%CI=0.0288-0.1971) and 14.25% (95%CI = 0.0167-0.1899). CONCLUSIONS High levels of MEHP, MBzP and MBP increased the odds of depressive symptoms in the elderly, and chronic inflammation had a partial mediating effect on the increased odds of depressive symptoms due to MEHP exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coexistence of depression and chronic diseases can lead to greater disability and increased mortality. The objective of this study was to examine the association between Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and depression in patients with chronic diseases and comorbidity. METHODS Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between DII and depression. Dose response relationship was analyzed using a generalized additive model with the smoothing plot. RESULTS A total of 7870 chronic diseases patients were enrolled. In multivariate model, the highest quintile of DII was associated with increased risk of depression in patients with diabetes (OR:1.73, 95CI%: 1.17, 2.57), hypertension (OR:1.93, 95CI%: 1.47, 2.52), coronary heart disease (OR:2.65, 95CI%: 1.18, 5.94). The dose response relationship curve suggested the DII tended to be linearly associated with depression in patients with chronic diseases and comorbidity, and the ORs for risk of depression increased with the increase of DII. Furthermore, in patients had at least one chronic comorbidity, the subgroup analysis results showed that those who age<60 years or male participants had higher risk of depression, with ORs (95% CIs) of 2.60 (1.81, 3.74) and 2.51 (1.65, 3.81), respectively. CONCLUSION The current study demonstrates that a higher DII is associated with an increased risk of depression in participants with chronic diseases and comorbidity, especially among those less than 60 years and men. Considering diet as a modifiable factor, limiting pro-inflammatory diet or encouraging anti-inflammatory diet may be an effective way to prevent depression and reduce depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Purpose Individuals with immunoglobulin G deficiency (IgGsd) often complain of fatigue. The correlation between systemic inflammation and fatigue is unknown. In this study perceived quality of life (QoL) and fatigue in individuals with IgGsd, on and off immunoglobulin replacement therapy (IgRT) were correlated to inflammatory markers in plasma to identify the subgroup that benefits from IgRT. Method Thirty-five IgGsd-patients were sampled on three occasions: at baseline, after being on IgRT for at least 18 months, and 18 months after discontinuation of IgRT. Short form 36, EQ-5D-5L visual analogue scale and fatigue impact scale questionnaires were used for evaluation of QoL and fatigue. Furthermore, a panel of 92 inflammatory markers were analysed in plasma. Thirty-two gender- and age-matched healthy individuals were included as controls and sampled on one occasion. Results QoL was lower and perceived fatigue higher in IgGsd compared to the controls. Severe fatigue and low QoL were associated with the need to restart IgRT (which is considered in IgGsd-individuals with a high burden of infections in Sweden). Twenty-five inflammatory factors were dysregulated in IgGsd and the plasma protein patterns were similar regardless of whether IgRT was ongoing or not. Enrichment analysis indicated IL-10 signalling as the most affected pathway. Severe fatigue was associated with decreased levels of the neurotrophic factors VEGFA and CSF-1. Conclusion Fatigue is a major contributory factor to impaired health-related QoL in IgGsd and is related to the need for IgRT. Low-grade systemic inflammation is a potential driver of fatigue. In addition to the burden of infections, we suggest the degree of fatigue should be considered when the decision to introduce IgRT is made.

Laboratory Value Effectiveness in Predicting Early Postoperative Periprosthetic Joint Infection After Total Hip Arthroplasty. J Arthroplasty 2022; 37:574-580. Abstract
BACKGROUND Diagnosing early periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains challenging. We sought to validate optimal laboratory value cutoffs for detecting early PJIs in a series of primary THAs from one institution. METHODS We retrospectively identified 22,795 primary THAs performed between 2000 and 2019. Within 12 weeks, 43 hips (43 patients) underwent arthrocentesis. Patients were divided into 2 groups: evaluation ≤6 weeks or 6-12 weeks following THA. The 2011 Musculoskeletal Infection Society major criteria for PJI diagnosed PJI in 15 patients. Mann-Whitney U-tests were used to compare median laboratory values and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to evaluate optimal cutoff values. RESULTS Both within 6 weeks and between 6 and 12 weeks postoperatively, median C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate, synovial white blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil percentage, and absolute neutrophil count (ANC) values were significantly higher in infected THAs. Optimal cutoffs within 6 weeks were: CRP ≥100 mg/L, synovial WBCs ≥4390 cells/μL, neutrophil percentage ≥74%, and ANC ≥3249 cells/μL. Between 6 and 12 weeks, optimal cutoffs were: CRP ≥33 mg/L, synovial WBCs ≥26,995 cells/μL, neutrophil percentage ≥93%, and ANC ≥25,645 cells/μL. CONCLUSION Early PJI following THA should be suspected within 6 weeks with CRP ≥100 mg/L or synovial WBCs ≥4390 cells/μL. Between 6 and 12 weeks postoperatively, cutoffs of CRP ≥33 mg/L, synovial fluid WBC ≥26,995 cells/μL, and neutrophil percentage ≥93% diagnosed PJI with high accuracy. Abstract
Early life adversities (ELA) are prevalent and have a profound and adverse impact across the lifespan, including on age-related health outcomes, yet interventions to remediate its adverse impact are scarce. This paper presents evidence for mindfulness training to reduce the elevated mental and physical health risks linked to ELA among adults by targeting biological mechanisms of ELA leading to these adverse health outcomes. We first provide a brief overview of ELA, its adverse health impacts, and mechanisms that might be responsible. Next, we review converging evidence that demonstrates that mindfulness training influences key biological pathways involved in ELA-linked negative health consequences, including (a) brain networks involved in self-regulation, (b) immunity and inflammation, (c) telomere biology, and (d) epigenetic modifications. Further, we review preliminary evidence from mindfulness-based trials that focused on populations impacted by ELA. We discuss limitations of this review and provide recommendations for future research. If effective, a mindfulness-based approach could be an important public health strategy for remediating the adverse mental and physical health consequences of ELA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Women with more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may face a triple threat of risk factors for cognitive concerns during the menopause transition: reduced estradiol, increased inflammation, and early life stress sequelae. Our objective was to determine the extent to which ACEs and peripheral basal inflammatory markers associate with verbal memory across the menopause transition. METHODS Penn Ovarian Aging cohort participants (n = 167) were assessed for ACEs (low (0-1) or high (≥2)) and had remaining stored blood samples at study end assayed for interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1-beta (IL-1β), C-reactive protein (CRP), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). Annual assessment included a verbal memory test (the Buschke Selective Reminding Test) and menopause stage determination. To estimate the effects of menopause stage, ACEs, and cytokines on verbal memory, repeated cognitive outcome measures were modeled in generalized estimating equations. Covariates included body mass index, smoking, race, education, age at baseline, and baseline verbal memory performance. Cytokine levels were log-transformed. RESULTS Advancing menopause stage was associated with worse performance on immediate verbal recall and delayed verbal recall (ps < 0.001). During perimenopause, higher ACE exposure was associated with worse immediate verbal recall at higher levels of TNF-α (slope difference p = 0.041). CONCLUSIONS Inflammation may mechanistically link ACEs and verbal memory for high ACE women during perimenopause. Reducing inflammation for these individuals may have positive impact on verbal memory across the menopause transition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is an illness with biological, psychological, and social underpinnings, which may include the interplay of inflammation, psychological traits, stress, social relationships, and cultural background. AIMS This work examines the prospective associations between social relationship quality and depressive symptoms, and between social relationship quality and inflammatory outcomes in two distinct cultures. METHODS Data were obtained from two longitudinal, prospective cohort studies: Midlife in the United States (MIDUS), and Midlife Development in Japan (MIDJA) between 2004 and 2010. One thousand three hundred and twenty-seven community-based adults were included in analyses, 1,054 from the United States and 273 from Tokyo, Japan. Depressive symptoms (measured by the CES-D Depression Scale) and inflammation (measured by blood sample concentrations of the inflammatory biomarkers interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein) were the outcomes. Social relationship quality was the predictor. Culture, trait independence and interdependence, and psychosocial stressors were examined as moderators of the link between social relationship quality and depressive symptoms. RESULTS Higher social relationship quality was associated with lower depressive symptoms in the United States (β = -6.15, p < .001), but not in Japan (β = -1.25, p = .390). Social relationship quality had no association with inflammation. Psychosocial stressors moderated the link between social relationship quality and depressive symptoms in both the United States (β = -0.39, p = .001) and Tokyo (β = -0.55, p = .001), such that social relationship quality acted as a buffer against depressive symptoms as psychosocial stress increased. CONCLUSION Improving the perceived quality of social relationships appears to be a stronger target for depression interventions in the United States than in Tokyo, Japan.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease and brain disorders, such as depression and cognitive dysfunction, are highly prevalent conditions and are among the leading causes limiting patient's quality of life. A growing body of evidence has shown an intimate crosstalk between the heart and the brain, resulting from a complex network of several physiological and neurohumoral circuits. From a pathophysiological perspective, both organs share common risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking or dyslipidaemia, and are similarly affected by systemic inflammation, atherosclerosis, and dysfunction of the neuroendocrine system. In addition, there is an increasing awareness that physiological interactions between the two organs play important roles in potentiating disease and that sex- and gender-related differences modify those interactions between the heart and the brain over the entire lifespan. The present review summarizes contemporary evidence of the effect of sex on heart-brain interactions and how these influence pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, and treatment responses of specific heart and brain diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a highly prevalent disease affecting more than 350 million people and has recently been associated with low-grade chronic inflammation. The role of diet in the development of a pro-inflammatory state was demonstrated in a recent study that found a high Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Index (EDII) score was associated with increased concentrations of circulating plasma inflammatory markers. It is becoming increasingly clear that diet and depression are linked, but the relationship itself has not been determined with absolute certainty. Pharmacologic and device assisted therapies are considered our most advanced treatments for major depressive disorder, though numerous studies suggest that they are not sufficient. Exploring the relationship of a pro-inflammatory diet and depressive symptoms is crucial for a holistic, evidenced-based approach to treating depression. METHODS Our study investigated this association using the EDII to evaluate the inflammatory potential of diet and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to score depression among healthcare personnel. Results from 631 participants were collected for analysis using REDCap software. RESULTS High PHQ-9 scores and high EDII scores were significantly correlated (F = 18.32, p < 0.0001) even when accounting for gender, psychiatric diagnosis, physical exercise, and spiritual exercise. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that anti-inflammatory diets can play a key role in the treatment of depression.

Abstract
Background/Aim Determining C-reactive protein (CRP) by non-invasive methods is of great interest for research addressing inflammation in young people. However, direct comparisons of such methods applied in children and adolescents are lacking so far. This study aimed to evaluate the association between CRP measured in dried blood spots (DBS CRP) and in saliva (sCRP), two less invasive alternatives to venipuncture, in 12- to 14-year-old adolescents. To evaluate the validity of both measurements in the context of biobehavioral studies, the potential of DBS CRP and sCRP to discriminate between defined BMI subgroups was assessed. Materials and Methods CRP levels in DBS and saliva collected from 87 healthy adolescents (M = 13.25 years, SD = 0.30, 51.7% females) were determined using high sensitive CRP ELISA for serum and salivary CRP ELISA, respectively. Characteristics and correlation of both measurements were assessed for the total sample and for three subgroups classified by BMI percentile ranges (A: ≤ 25; B: 26–74; C: ≥ 75). Results In the total sample, DBS CRP and sCRP were significantly associated (r = 0.59, p < 0.001). Splitting the sample into BMI-dependent subgroups revealed similarly strong associations of DBS CRP with sCRP for all three groups (A: r = 0.51; B: r = 0.61; C: r = 0.53). However, comparing the mean CRP values per BMI subgroup, one-way ANOVA reported significant differences for DBS CRP, but not for sCRP mean values. Conclusions The significant correlation of DBS CRP with sCRP was independent of the investigated BMI range groups, yet BMI-dependent distinction was only provided by DBS CRP mean values. Overall, our results suggest that DBS CRP is likely to reflect systemic inflammation more precisely. Salivary CRP can be alternatively determined in studies with adolescents when conditions require it, given the oral health status is assessed. Considering that DBS CRP and sCRP share only 35% of common variance, further studies should examine their specific validity.

Abstract
ObjectiveFrailty and depression, as two common conditions among older adults in China, have been shown to be closely related to each other. The aim of this study was to investigate the bidirectional effects between frailty and depressive symptoms in Chinese population.MethodsThe bidirectional effect of frailty with depressive symptoms was analyzed among 5,303 adults ≥ 60 years of age from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Phenotype and a frailty index were used to measure frailty. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to determine the bidirectional effects of frailty and depressive symptoms in cross-sectional and cohort studies, respectively. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were further used to further verify the associations.ResultsIn the cross-sectional study, the multivariate-adjusted ORs (95% CIs) for depressive symptoms among pre-frail and frail adults, as defined by the frailty index and phenotype, were 3.05 (2.68–3.49), and 9.78 (8.02–12.03), respectively. Depressed participants showed higher risks of pre-frailty and frailty [frailty index, 3.07 (2.69–3.50); and phenotypic frailty, 9.95 (8.15–12.24)]. During follow-up, the multivariate-adjusted HRs (95% CIs) for depressive symptoms among pre-frail and frail participants, as defined by the frailty index and phenotype, were 1.38 (1.22–1.57), and 1.30 (1.14–1.48), respectively. No significant relationship existed between baseline depressive symptoms and the incidence of frailty. Moreover, the results from subgroup and sensitivity analyses were consistent with the main results.ConclusionAlthough a cross-sectional bidirectional association between depressive symptom and frailty has been observed in older (≥60 years old) Chinese adults, frailty may be an independent predictor for subsequent depression. Moreover, no effect of depressive symptoms on subsequent frailty was detected. Additional bidirectional studies are warranted in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is associated with inflammation, but the mechanisms underlying this association are unclear. We examined adiposity and smoking as potential pathways through which childhood depression may lead to an elevated inflammatory status among young adults. METHODS The sample included 294 subjects with histories of depression (probands), 270 never-depressed siblings of probands (high-risk siblings), and 169 controls. C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) were assessed in serum samples. An adiposity score was computed from body mass index and waist circumference. Smoking behavior was evaluated during an interview. Mixed-effects models were used to test whether adiposity and smoking mediate the relationship between depression and inflammation. RESULTS Probands (p = .004), but not siblings (p = .071), had higher levels of sICAM-1 compared to controls. However, depression history and risk status had no direct effects on CRP (ps > .13) or IL-6 (ps > .16). Importantly, adiposity indirectly mediated the effect of group (probands vs. controls; siblings vs. controls) on all three inflammatory markers. Smoking indirectly mediated the effect of group (probands vs. controls; siblings vs. controls) on sICAM-1 only. CONCLUSIONS Among young adults, the adverse inflammatory consequences of depression history are significant for sICAM-1. Adiposity and smoking are pathways through which depression can indirectly impact several inflammatory markers, suggesting possible preventive interventions to improve the immunologic and cardiovascular health of depression-prone individuals.

Abstract
Adolescent depression is characterized by heightened inflammation and altered connectivity of fronto-cingulate-limbic tracts, including the genu of the corpus callosum (CCG) and the uncinate fasciculus (UF). No studies, however, have yet examined the association between inflammation, measured by peripheral levels of cytokines, and white matter connectivity of fronto-cingulate-limbic tracts in adolescents. Here, 56 depressed adolescents (32 females, 3 non-binary; 16.23 ± 1.28 years) and 19 controls (10 females; 15.72 ± 1.17 years) completed a diffusion-weighted MRI scan at 3 Tesla. We conducted deterministic tractography to segment bilateral corpus callosum (genu and splenium) and UF and computed mean fractional anisotropy (FA) in each tract. A subset of participants (43 depressed and 17 healthy controls) also provided dried blood spot samples from which we assayed interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-ɑ) using a Luminex multiplex array. Depressed participants did not differ from controls in FA of the corpus callosum or UF (all FDR-corrected ps > 0.056) but exhibited higher levels of inflammation than did controls (IL-6: β = 0.91, FDR-corrected p = 0.006; TNF-α: β = 0.76, FDR-corrected p = 0.006). Although diagnostic group did not moderate the associations between inflammatory cytokines and FA in the CCG and UF, across both groups, greater peripheral inflammation was associated with lower FA in the CCG (IL-6: β = -0.38; FDR-corrected p = 0.044; TNF-ɑ: β = -0.41, FDR-corrected p = 0.044). This study is the first to examine associations between peripheral inflammation and white matter microstructure of fronto-cingulate-limbic tracts in depressed and nondepressed adolescents. Future mechanistic studies are needed to confirm our findings; nevertheless, our results suggest that heightened inflammation is an important component of neurophenotypes that are relevant to adolescent depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Levels of inflammatory markers are elevated in patients with psychological disorders. However, anti-psychological drugs have an effect on proinflammatory cytokine production and disturb their relationship. Limited evidence focuses on the inflammatory marker profile of psychological status before treatment. This study aimed to investigate the inflammatory biomarker profiles of psychological treatment-naive individuals. METHODS We included 790 psychological treatment-naive individuals from a longitudinal cohort study of Midlife in the United States (MIDUS). Symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were assessed by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) subscales, the Social Anxiety Scale (STAI), and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), respectively. RESULTS Spearman correlation analysis showed that a higher CESD total score was correlated with higher CRP (p=0.009), IL-6 (p=0.007), fibrinogen (p=0.036), E-selectin (p=0.018), ICAM-1 (p=0.013), and IL-8 (p=0.05) levels. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the CESD total score was positively associated with the levels of IL-6 (p=0.024) after adjustments. Moreover, the perceived stress score (PSS) was negatively associated with the levels of IL-8 (p=0.025). However, these associations were not significant after multiple testing (p=0.088, 0.091, respectively). LIMITATIONS The casual relationship cannot be drawn due to the cross-sectional design CONCLUSION: Overall, our results suggested IL-6 and IL-8 might play a important role in the pathogenesis of psychological disorder. Larger and longitude studies are needed to confirm our results.

Abstract
The etiopathogenesis of depression is not entirely understood. Several studies have investigated the role of inflammation in major depressive disorder. The present work aims to review the literature on the association between C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and depression. A systematic review was performed for the topics of ‘CRP’ and ‘depression’ using the PubMed database from inception to December 2021. Fifty-six studies were identified and included in the review. Evidence suggested the presence of dysregulation in the inflammation system in individuals with depression. In most studies, higher blood CRP levels were associated with greater symptom severity, a specific pattern of depressive symptoms, and a worse response to treatment. Moreover, about one-third of depressed patients showed a low-grade inflammatory state, suggesting the presence of a different major depressive disorder (MDD) subgroup with a distinct etiopathogenesis, clinical course, treatment response, and prognosis, which could benefit from monitoring of CRP levels and might potentially respond to anti-inflammatory treatments. This work provides robust evidence about the potential role of CRP and its blood levels in depressive disorders. These findings can be relevant to developing new therapeutic strategies and better understanding if CRP may be considered a valuable biomarker for depression.

Abstract
Depression is a psychiatric disorder that is observed to be associated with changes in levels of inflammatory markers and deterioration in cognitive functioning. Here, we combined the biochemical tests of IL-1 and IL-6 serum levels and the expressions of genes encoding these interleukins with cognitive assessment of episodic memories, and examined 50 depressed patients and 37 healthy participants. Results confirmed increased serum levels of IL-1 and IL-6 in the study group when compared to healthy volunteers. Moreover, episodic memory, in terms of answering structured questions (but not free recollection of past events) deteriorated among depressed patients. The described parameters neither correlated with each other nor with the two measures of severity of depression—HDRS score and years of psychiatric treatment. Although both observed dysfunctions—cognitive and immune—among depressed patients are confirmed, they do not seem to covary in the present study.

Abstract
Recent randomized controlled trials have demonstrated a protective association between carotenoids and inflammation; however, the basis of this association on lifestyle factors remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify the associations between carotenoids and inflammatory markers stratified by lifestyle factors, using baseline data from the Mikkabi Study. Serum carotenoid and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were measured. Multivariable adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for a high hs-CRP level (≥2.0 mg/dL) were obtained using logistic regression analysis. The data of 882 individuals were analyzed; 11.7% had high hs-CRP levels. The highest tertile of lutein (OR: 0.44; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.25–0.76), zeaxanthin (OR: 0.36; 95% CI: 0.21–0.64), total carotenoid (OR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.32–0.9997), and oxygenated carotenoid concentration (OR: 0.50; 95% CI: 0.28–0.90), with the lowest tertile as reference, was inversely associated with a high hs-CRP level. The interaction between lutein, but not other carotenoids, and current smoking was significant. The inverse association between lutein and a high hs-CRP level was significant in non-smokers (OR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.22–0.76) but not in smokers. These results further support the anti-inflammatory effect of carotenoids; nevertheless, further studies should clarify the interaction of smoking with the association between lutein and inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown associations between major depression and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Few studies have considered the extent to which shared genetic and environmental factors contribute to this association, nor have they considered the relationship outside of European populations. We examined the association between CRP levels and depression and their aetiology in a Sri Lankan population. METHODS Data were collected from 2577 twins and 899 singletons in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Depression symptoms were assessed using the revised Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). High-sensitive CRP blood levels were assessed using immunoturbidimetry. Linear regressions were performed to test the association between CRP and depression. The heritability of CRP levels was estimated using Structural Equation Modelling. RESULTS CRP was significantly associated with BMI (p < 0.01) but not depression (p > 0.05). In males, variance in CRP levels was explained by shared environment (51% 95%CIs: 13-62) and non-shared environment (45% 95%CIs: 36-54). In contrast, in females, CRP variance was explained by genetic (41% 95%CIs: 10-52) and non-shared environment (56% 95%CIs: 47-67). A genetic correlation between CRP and BMI was observed in females only. LIMITATIONS CRP level was based on a single data collection point, longer term data collection would give a more accurate picture of an individual's state of inflammation. CONCLUSIONS The lack of association between depression and CRP strengthens the hypothesis that inflammation might contribute to the development of some, but not all types of depression. CRP levels were moderated by the environment, suggesting interventions aimed at reducing CRP levels and risk for inflammatory conditions, particularly in males.

Abstract
Background A specific biological vulnerability underlies suicidal behavior. Recent findings have suggested a possible role of inflammation and neuroaxonal injury. However, the relationship between inflammation and clinical symptoms in this disorder is still unclear. The objective of this study is applying novel blood markers of neuroaxonal integrity such as neurofilament light chain (NfL) and comparing the results with the healthy control subjects. Methods In this cross-sectional study patients with suicide attempts were evaluated. The serum concentration of NfL on admission was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Results A total of 50 patients with a suicide attempts and 35 healthy controls were included in the study. The levels of NfL in attempted suicide patients were significantly higher in comparison with healthy controls (40.52 ± 33.54 vs 13.73 ± 5.11, P < 0.001). A significant association between serum levels of NfL and risk factors for suicide was not found. Conclusion These findings indicate that axonal damage may be an underlying neuropathological component of suicide attempt patients, although no correlation was observed with clinical features. This line of work could lead to new horizons in understanding the neurobiology of suicidal attempts and the development of better management strategies for these patients.

Abstract
Background: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are problematic in cancer settings. In addition to poor quality of life, depression is associated with worsened survival. Patients who develop depression that responds to treatment have the same cancer-related survival as those patients who never had depression. Although depression in patients with cancer is common, it is often unrecognized, untreated, or at best, undertreated. There remains untapped potential for underlying cancer-related biology associated with depression to help clinicians correctly identify depressed cancer patients and orchestrate appropriate treatments to address cancer-related depression. Biologically, inflammation has been most vigorously described in its association with depression in otherwise healthy patients and to a significant extent in patients with medical illness. This association is especially relevant to patients with cancer since so many aspects of cancer induce inflammation. In addition to cancer itself, its treatments (e.g., surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and systemic therapies) and associated factors (e.g., smoking, obesity, aging) are all associated with increased inflammation that can drive immunological changes in the brain followed by depression. This critical review investigates the relationship between depression and cancer-related inflammation. It investigates several hypotheses that support these relationships in cancer patients. Special attention is given to the data that support certain inflammatory markers specific to both cancer and depression, the neurobiological mechanisms by which inflammation can impact neurotransmitters and neurocircuits in the brain, and the data addressing interventions that reduce inflammation and depression in cancer patients, and future directions.

Abstract
Depression in older individuals is a common complex mood disorder with high comorbidity of both psychiatric and physical diseases, associated with high disability, cognitive decline, and increased mortality The factors predicting the risk of late-life depression (LLD) are incompletely understood. The reciprocal relationship of depressive disorder and age- and disease-related processes has generated pathogenic hypotheses and provided various treatment options. The heterogeneity of depression complicates research into the underlying pathogenic cascade, and factors involved in LLD considerably differ from those involved in early life depression. Evidence suggests that a variety of vascular mechanisms, in particular cerebral small vessel disease, generalized microvascular, and endothelial dysfunction, as well as metabolic risk factors, including diabetes, and inflammation that may induce subcortical white and gray matter lesions by compromising fronto-limbic and other important neuronal networks, may contribute to the development of LLD. The "vascular depression" hypothesis postulates that cerebrovascular disease or vascular risk factors can predispose, precipitate, and perpetuate geriatric depression syndromes, based on their comorbidity with cerebrovascular lesions and the frequent development of depression after stroke. Vascular burden is associated with cognitive deficits and a specific form of LLD, vascular depression, which is marked by decreased white matter integrity, executive dysfunction, functional disability, and poorer response to antidepressive therapy than major depressive disorder without vascular risk factors. Other pathogenic factors of LLD, such as neurodegeneration or neuroimmune regulatory dysmechanisms, are briefly discussed. Treatment planning should consider a modest response of LLD to antidepressants, while vascular and metabolic factors may provide promising targets for its successful prevention and treatment. However, their effectiveness needs further investigation, and intervention studies are needed to assess which interventions are appropriate and effective in clinical practice.

Abstract
(1) Background: Growing evidence indicates that inflammation can induce neural circuit dysfunction and plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD). Nevertheless, whether inflammation affects the integrity of white matter pathways is only beginning to be explored. (2) Methods: We computed quantitative anisotropy (QA) from diffusion magnetic resonance imaging as an index of white matter integrity and regressed QA on C-reactive protein (CRP), controlling for age, sex, and BMI, in 176 participants with MDD. (3) Results: The QA values of several white matter tracts were negatively correlated with CRP concentration (standardized beta coefficient = -0.22, 95%CI = -0.38--0.06, FDR < 0.05). These tracts included the bilateral cortico-striatal tracts, thalamic radiations, inferior longitudinal fasciculi, corpus callosum (the forceps minor portion and the tapetum portion), cingulum bundles, and the left superior longitudinal fasciculus III. Importantly, the association remained robust after regressing up to twelve potential confounders. The bilateral fornix and a small portion of the thalamic radiation showed a positive association with CRP levels, but these associations did not remain significant after adjusting for confounders. (4) Conclusions: Peripheral inflammation may contribute to the etiology of MDD by impacting the microstructural integrity of brain corticolimbic white matter pathways.

Abstract
Although alterations in the gut microbiota have been linked to the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD), including through effects on the immune response, our understanding is deficient about the straight connection patterns among microbiota and MDD in patients. Male and female MDD patients were recruited: 46 patients with a current active MDD (a-MDD) and 22 in remission or with only mild symptoms (r-MDD). Forty-five healthy controls (HC) were also recruited. Psychopathological states were assessed, and fecal and blood samples were collected. Results indicated that the inducible nitric oxide synthase expression was higher in MDD patients compared with HC and the oxidative stress levels were greater in the a-MDD group. Furthermore, the lipopolysaccharide (an indirect marker of bacterial translocation) was higher in a-MDD patients compared with the other groups. Fecal samples did not cluster according to the presence or the absence of MDD. There were bacterial genera whose relative abundance was altered in MDD: Bilophila (2-fold) and Alistipes (1.5-fold) were higher, while Anaerostipes (1.5-fold) and Dialister (15-fold) were lower in MDD patients compared with HC. Patients with a-MDD presented higher relative abundance of Alistipes and Anaerostipes (1.5-fold) and a complete depletion of Dialister compared with HC. Patients with r-MDD presented higher abundance of Bilophila (2.5-fold) compared with HC. Thus, the abundance of bacterial genera and some immune pathways, both with potential implications in the pathophysiology of depression, appear to be altered in MDD, with the most noticeable changes occurring in patients with the worse clinical condition, the a-MDD group.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency and elevated high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) have been associated with several health outcomes, but knowledge on early life trajectories and association between 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and hs-CRP is lacking. We investigated the association between longitudinal measurements of 25(OH)D and hs-CRP, respectively, from pregnancy to childhood and throughout childhood in two Danish mother–child cohorts—the COPSAC2010 and COPSAC2000. In COPSAC2010, there was an association between 25(OH)D concentrations at week 24 in pregnancy and at age 6 months in childhood (n = 633): estimate (95% CI); 0.114 (0.041;0.187), p = 0.002, and between 25(OH)D at age 6 months and 6 years (n = 475): 0.155 (0.083;0.228), p < 0.001. This was also demonstrated in the COPSAC2000 cohort between 25(OH)D concentrations in cord blood and at age 4 years (n = 188): 0.294 (0.127;0.461), p < 0.001 and at age 6 months and 4 years (n = 264): 0.260 (0.133;0.388), p < 0.001. In COPSAC2000, we also found an association between hs-CRP at age 6 months and 12 years in childhood (n = 232): 0.183 (0.076;0.289), p < 0.001. Finally, we found a negative association between the cross-sectional measurements of 25(OH)D and hs-CRP at age 6 months (n = 613) in COPSAC2010: −0.004 (−0.008;−0.0004), p = 0.030, but this was not replicated in COPSAC2000. In this study, we found evidence of associations across timepoints of 25(OH)D concentrations from mid-pregnancy to infancy and through childhood and associations between hs-CRP levels during childhood, although with weak correlations. We also found a negative cross-sectional association between 25(OH)D and hs-CRP concentrations in COPSAC2010 proposing a role of vitamin D in systemic low-grade inflammation, though this association was not present in COPSAC2000.

Abstract
Many patients diagnosed with empty nose syndrome (ENS) later develop mental illness. The literature addressing biomarkers associated with postoperative psychiatric status is limited. This study aimed to assess the association between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and psychiatric status after surgery in ENS. We recruited patients with ENS undergoing endonasal submucosal implantation. Their pre- and postoperative psychiatric status was evaluated using the Beck depression inventory-II (BDI-II) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Serum hs-CRP was analyzed one day before and one year after surgery. Of the 43 patients enrolled, all subjective measurements had improved (symptom scores decreased) significantly by the third month postoperatively and remained plateaued till 12 months. Those with preoperative hs-CRP levels > 2.02 mg/L were likely to remain depressive 1 year postoperatively. The regression model showed that a preoperative hs-CRP level > 2.02 mg/L was significantly correlated with postoperative depression in patients with ENS (odds ratio, 19.9). Hs-CRP level seems to be a feasible predictor of surgical outcome regarding improved depression in patients with ENS. Patients with higher preoperative hs-CRP levels should be monitored closely after surgery.

Abstract
The authors aim to present a narrative review of research on the inflammatory aetiology of depression. Depression is a psychiatric disorder, constituting the most common reason of disability due to a health condition. It has been estimated that at least one in six people suffer from depression at some point of their lives. The aetiology of depression, although researched extensively all around the world, still remains unclear. Authors discuss the possible role of inflammation in depression, the neurodevelopmental theory of depression as well as associations between cognition and depression. Possible associations between memory dysfunction among depressive patients and inflammatory markers are included. The associations between the immune system, depression and cognition are observed. Possible mediating factors between these areas include personality traits, hormonal imbalance and functioning of the brain areas. The question as to what mediating factors are involved is still open to research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Stress, inflammation, and depression are associated to coronary heart disease (CHD). However, how these constructs collectively contribute to CHD incidence is not well understood. For the first time, this study explored the concurrent relationship between workplace stress, depression symptomology and levels of low-grade inflammation with future CHD incidence. METHODS Data from the 5-year intervals at phase 5, 7, and 9 of the Whitehall II study (N = 8348, Mage = 56) provided measures of workplace stress, depression symptomology, inflammation (interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen), and CHD incidence. The proposed stress-inflammation-depression-CHD pathway was assessed with a longitudinal design incorporating a structural equation model (SEM) that measured if changes in stress, depression, and inflammation between phase 5 to phase 7 predicted first-time CHD events between phases 7 and 9. RESULTS The SEM empirically supported this proposed pathway and demonstrated excellent model fit, χ (72) = 3582.959, p < .001, CFI = 0.896, RMSEA = 0.076 (CI90 = 0.074, 0.079), while depression symptoms mediated the association between workplace stress and CHD incidence, B = 0.003 (CI90 = 0.001, 0.004). Further, survival analysis indicated that individuals with higher mean scores (across phases) of depression symptoms or fibrinogen levels were more likely to experience a first time CHD event. CONCLUSIONS Increases in depression symptoms and fibrinogen levels may be good indicators of future CHD morbidity among older employees. Future research is encouraged to monitor negative affective states and the potential use of biobehavioural options to reduce depression and inflammation that may mitigate CHD risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigate the relationship between sarcopenia components and depression in geriatric outpatients, considering the effects of potential confounding factors. METHODS Adults ≥60 years of age were selected from outpatient clinics. Muscle strength was assessed using handgrip strength (HGS) measured using a hydraulic hand dynamometer and chair stand test (CSST). Physical performance was evaluated by usual gait speed (UGS), nutritional status, and frailty were screened by mini-nutritional assessment (MNA) questionnaire and FRAIL scale. Depression was diagnosed through a psychiatric interview and the administration of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). RESULTS Participants with depression were similar to participants without depression regarding age (p = .055), education (p = .095), frailty (p = .857), and HGS scores (p = .053). The group with depression had longer CSST duration (p = .023), slower UGS (p = .027), and more malnutrition (p = .001). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that only the malnutrition was independently associated factor with depression after adjusting for confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS Depression is associated with malnutrition and some components of sarcopenia in geriatric outpatients. Our results revealed that sarcopenia might be associated with depression through malnutrition. If malnutrition lasts for a long time, sarcopenia may become evident in the later stages of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with depression often demonstrate an altered peripheral inflammatory profile, as well as emotion perception difficulties. However, correlations of inflammation with overall depression severity are inconsistent and inflammation may only contribute to specific symptoms. Moreover, measurement of the association between inflammation and emotion perception is sparse in adolescence, despite representing a formative window of emotional development and high-risk period for depression onset. METHODS Serum interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and IL-1β were measured in 34 adolescents aged 12-17 with DSM-IV depressive disorders (DEP) and 29 healthy controls (HC). Participants were evaluated using the Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised (CDRS-R) and symptom subscales were extracted based on factor analysis. Participants also completed a performance-based measure of emotion perception, the Facial Emotion Perception Test (FEPT), which assesses the accuracy of categorizing angry, fearful, sad, happy, and neutral facial emotions. RESULTS IL-6 and TNF-α correlated with reported depressed mood and somatic symptoms, respectively, but not total CDRS-R score, anhedonia or observed mood, across both DEP and HC. DEP demonstrated lower accuracy for identifying angry facial expressions. Higher IL-6 was inversely related to accuracy and discrimination of angry and neutral faces across all participants. IL-1β was associated with reduced discrimination of fearful faces. CONCLUSIONS Inflammatory markers were sensitive to affective and somatic symptoms of depression and processing of emotional threat in adolescents. In particular, IL-6 was elevated in depressed adolescents and therefore may represent a specific target for modulating depressive symptoms and emotion processing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evidence from anti-inflammatory drug trials for the treatment of depression has been inconsistent. This may be ascribed to the differing symptom-specific effects of inflammation. Accordingly, the authors explored the associations between systemic inflammation and an array of individual symptoms of depression across multiple studies. METHODS This random-effects pooled analysis included 15 population-based cohorts and 56,351 individuals age 18 years and older. Serum or plasma concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were measured at baseline. Using validated self-report measures, 24 depressive symptoms were ascertained in 15 cross-sectional studies, and, in seven cohorts, were also assessed at follow-up (mean follow-up period, 3.2 years). RESULTS The prevalence of depressive symptoms ranged from 1.1% (suicidal ideation) to 21.5% (sleep problems). In cross-sectional analyses, higher concentrations of CRP were robustly associated with an increased risk of experiencing four physical symptoms (changes in appetite, felt everything was an effort, loss of energy, sleep problems) and one cognitive symptom (little interest in doing things). These associations remained after adjustment for sociodemographic variables, behavioral factors, and chronic conditions; in sex- and age-stratified analyses; in longitudinal analyses; when using IL-6 as the inflammatory marker of interest; in depressed individuals; and after excluding chronically ill individuals. For four exclusively emotional symptoms (bothered by things, hopelessness about the future, felt fearful, life had been a failure), the overall evidence was strongly against an association with inflammation. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest symptom-specific rather than generalized effects of systemic inflammation on depression. Future trials exploring anti-inflammatory treatment regimens for depression may benefit from targeting individuals presenting with symptom profiles characterized by distinct inflammation-related physical and cognitive symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide. Identifying factors associated with suicidality (suicidal ideation [SI]/suicidal behavior) could increase our understanding of the pathophysiological underpinnings of suicide and improve its prevention. METHODS We conducted a systematic review (PubMed/PsycInfo/Cochrane databases, up to September 2020) and random-effect meta-analysis including observational studies comparing peripheral C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in suicidal versus non-suicidal patients affected by any psychiatric disorder and healthy controls (HC). Primary outcome was the CRP standardized mean difference (SMD) between patients with high suicidality versus those with absent or low suicidality. Secondary outcomes were SMD of CRP levels between those with suicide attempt versus no suicide attempt, as well as between those with (high) versus low or absent SI. Quality of included studies was measured with Newcastle-Ottawa scale. RESULTS Out of initial 550 references, 21 observational studies involving 7682 subjects (7445 with mood disorders or first-episode psychosis, 237 HC) were included. A significant association of CRP levels with suicidality (SMD 0.688, 95% CI 0.476-0.9, p < 0.001) emerged. CRP levels were higher in individuals with high SI (SMD 1.145, 95% CI 0.273-2.018, p = 0.010) and in those with suicide attempt (SMD 0.549, 95%CI 0.363-0.735, p < 0.001) than non-suicidal individuals (either patients or HC). Main analyses were confirmed in sensitivity analysis (removing HC), and after adjusting for publication bias. The cross-sectional design of included studies, and the high heterogeneity of diagnosis and treatment limit the generalizability of these results. Median quality of included studies was high. CONCLUSION CRP is associated with higher suicidality in patients with mental disorders. Large cohort studies longitudinally monitoring CRP levels are needed to explore its longitudinal association with suicidality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is an important independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Cumulative data suggest that depressive patients exhibit derangement in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), although underlying mechanisms remain mostly unknown. Endothelial dysfunction (ED), defined as different forms of abnormal endothelial activity, plays a key role in the pathogenesis of vascular disease. ED is associated with several clinical conditions characterized by high cardiovascular risk. Diverse ED markers have been found in mood disorders. PURPOSE To evaluate the association between rCBF and peripheral ED markers in MDD patients, at baseline and after selective serotonin receptor inhibitors (SSRIs) therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty-seven untreated unipolar MDD patients in their first episode were evaluated with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and brain perfusion SPECT at baseline and after 2 months of SSRIs. Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) was employed to evaluate rCBF; circulating endothelial cells (CECs), plasma soluble intercellular adhesion molecule (sICAM), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) were used as independent covariates. RESULTS Baseline CECs and sICAM were increased in MDD patients compared with matching controls (p = 0.0001) and hsCRP (p = 0.03). HAM-D scores (21 items) and CECs diminished after SSRI therapy in MDD patients (p < 0.0001). There was a significant rCBF decrease, mainly in deep central structures. HAM-D change was associated with rCBF decrease at the left amygdala, right striatum levels, and Brodmann area 25. CEC change was associated with rCBF at deep brain level and sICAM with large rCBF areas at the left caudate and tectum; hsCRP was associated, to a lesser extent, with the left dorsal striatum and mesencephalic tectum. CONCLUSION ED markers in patients with MDD are associated with significant changes in rCBF which are features of depression. These findings suggest that systemic damage/activation of the endothelium may contribute to the abnormal rCBF observed in MDD patients.

Abstract
Background: Inflammation is essential for the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). While the immune system contribution to the development of neurological symptoms has been intensively studied, inflammatory biomarkers for mental symptoms such as depression are poorly understood in the context of MS. Here, we test if depression correlates with peripheral and central inflammation markers in MS patients as soon as the diagnosis is established. Methods: Forty-four patients were newly diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS, primary progressive MS or clinically isolated syndrome. Age, gender, EDSS, C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin, white blood cells count in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF WBC), presence of gadolinium enhanced lesions (GE) on T1-weighted images and total number of typical MS lesion locations were included in linear regression models to predict Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) score and the depression dimension of the Symptoms Checklist 90-Revised (SCL90RD). Results: CRP elevation and GE predicted significantly BDI (CRP: p = 0.007; GE: p = 0.019) and SCL90RD (CRP: p = 0.004; GE: p = 0.049). The combination of both factors resulted in more pronounced depressive symptoms (p = 0.04). CSF WBC and EDSS as well as the other variables were not correlated with depressive symptoms. Conclusions: CRP elevation and GE are associated with depressive symptoms in newly diagnosed MS patients. These markers can be used to identify MS patients exhibiting a high risk for the development of depressive symptoms in early phases of the disease.

Abstract
Fungi represent one of the most diverse and abundant eukaryotes on earth. The interplay between mold exposure and the host immune system is still not fully elucidated. Literature research focusing on up-to-date publications is providing a heterogenous picture of evidence and opinions regarding the role of mold and mycotoxins in the development of immune diseases. While the induction of allergic immune responses by molds is generally acknowledged, other direct health effects like the toxic mold syndrome are controversially discussed. However, recent observations indicate a particular importance of mold/mycotoxin exposure in individuals with pre-existing dysregulation of the immune system, due to exacerbation of underlying pathophysiology including allergic and non-allergic chronic inflammatory diseases, autoimmune disorders, and even human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease progression. In this review, we focus on the impact of mycotoxins regarding their impact on disease progression in pre-existing immune dysregulation. This is complemented by experimental in vivo and in vitro findings to present cellular and molecular modes of action. Furthermore, we discuss hypothetical mechanisms of action, where evidence is missing since much remains to be discovered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traumatic experiences are strongly predictive of adverse mental health outcomes. Experimental studies have demonstrated that systemic inflammation can increase reactivity to threatening stimuli. It is not known whether naturally occurring inflammation amplifies the impact of traumatic experiences on mental health. Here we test whether incident traumatic events are more predictive of adverse mental health outcomes for individuals with greater pre-trauma systemic inflammation in a racially and ethnically diverse cohort study of youth assigned male at birth who identify as sexual or gender minorities (ages 16-29, n = 518), a group at high risk for trauma exposure. METHODS Measures of inflammation, depression symptom severity, and perceived stress were measured at baseline. One year later, depression symptom severity and perceived stress were measured again, and participants reported the traumatic events they had experienced in the intervening year. RESULTS In a model adjusted for baseline depression symptom severity and other key covariates, we found that higher baseline levels of interleukin-1β amplified the effect of incident trauma exposure on depression symptom severity at follow-up (β = 0.234, SE = 0.080, P = 0.004). In a model adjusted for baseline perceived stress and other key covariates, we found that higher baseline scores on a multi-marker inflammatory index amplified the effect of incident trauma exposure on perceived stress at follow-up (β = 0.243, SE = 0.083, P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that greater pre-trauma inflammation may predict poorer mental health following trauma exposure. Understanding how inflammation interacts with trauma to shape mental health may generate novel insights for preventing and treating the debilitating psychological consequences of trauma.

Abstract
AIMS The mood disorders have been recognized as common comorbidities of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), however unknown in patients with different RA courses. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the status of mood disorders in early RA and non-early RA patients and further identify the associated factors for mood disorders. METHODS Self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) were assessed in all enrolled RA patients. Besides clinical assessments, power Doppler and greyscale (GS) ultrasound of 28 joints was performed. The frequency of mood disorders was compared between early RA and non-early RA patients. Multivariate regression was used to identify the associated factors for mood disorders. RESULTS Tow hundred one RA patients were enrolled, with 76 early RA (disease duration ≤ 2 years) and 125 non-early RA (disease duration > 2 years). Mood disorders (depression and/or anxiety) were found in 42 (20.9%) patients. Depression was more frequently observed in early RA than non-early RA patients (26.3% vs. 14.4%, P = 0.036). A similar trend for anxiety was also observed in early RA compared to non-early RA patients, although the difference was insignificant (13.2% vs. 5.6%, P = 0.062). Disease duration (OR = 0.991, 95% CI 0.985-0.998, P = 0.009), health assessment questionnaire disability index (HAQ-DI) (OR = 1.045, 95% CI 1.005-1.086, P = 0.029) and GS synovitis score (OR = 1.065, 95% CI 1.017-1.115, P = 0.007) were identified as factors associated with depression. Disease duration (OR = 0.981, 95% CI 0.967-0.995, P = 0.009), HAQ-DI (OR = 1.071, 95% CI 1.013-1.133, P = 0.017) and GS synovitis score (OR = 1.072, 95% CI 1.012-1.136, P = 0.019) were identified to be associated with anxiety. CONCLUSIONS Depression and anxiety were almost doubled in frequency in early RA than in long-standing RA patients. RA patients with short disease duration, high HAQ-DI and GS score were more likely to be in depression and anxiety. Key Points • Mood disorders were more frequent in early RA than non-early RA patients. • More attention to psychological status is needed in RA patients. • RA patients with short disease duration, poor physical function and severe synovitis were more likely to have depression and/or anxiety.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) has been linked to elevated inflammation markers. It remains unclear whether the elevation of C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels are not only observable in acute MDD but also in patients after remission. MDD is a common sequela of early life maltreatment (ELM), which has also been associated with elevated inflammation markers. While the majority of studies investigated (acute) MDD and ELM as isolated predictors of inflammation, a few studies found inflammation levels to be more pronounced in patients with MDD that were exposed to ELM. This investigation included both ELM and MDD in one study and aimed at distinguishing between the effects of MDD in remission (rMDD) and ELM and investigating potential accumulative effects on the inflammatory markers CRP and IL-6 in a population of N = 126 women (n = 122 for CRP and n = 66 for IL-6). We further investigated how disorder characteristics (course and severity) and specific types of ELM affect levels of CRP and IL-6. We found that rMDD predicted levels of CRP and IL-6 and physical abuse predicted levels of CRP when considering both predictors simultaneously, while other types of ELM did not. A later onset of MDD and a shorter time interval since the last episode were associated with higher levels of IL-6. Our findings contribute to the existing literature on the association between MDD and inflammation, suggesting that elevated levels of inflammation markers may persist even after remission of MDD. Our findings on physical abuse as a specific predictor of CRP in the presence of rMDD suggest that different types of ELM could result in distinct inflammation profiles.

Abstract
Background Breast cancer survivors (BCS) can exhibit a dysregulation of cortisol and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels post-treatment, which increase the risk of diverse health outcomes. Certain behavioural, physical, and psychological variables may help to predict cortisol and CRP levels post-treatment. The aims of this study were to: (1) describe naturally occurring changes in absolute diurnal cortisol and CRP levels over a period of 1.5 years post-treatment among BCS, (2) assess if absolute diurnal cortisol and CRP levels change in tandem, and (3) assess behavioural, physical, and psychological variables as predictors of absolute diurnal cortisol levels and CRP levels. Methods Capillary blood and saliva samples were collected from 201 BCS, on average, 3.5 months post-treatment (T1) and again 3, 6, 9, and 12 months later (T2−T5). At each time point, five saliva samples were collected on two nonconsecutive days: at awakening, 30 min after awakening, 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and at bedtime. At each time point, participants also completed self-report questionnaires and wore an accelerometer for seven consecutive days. Data were analyzed using multilevel modeling. Results Absolute diurnal cortisol levels did not change significantly over time. CRP levels decreased across time points (Blinear = −0.31, p = .01), though the rate of decrease slowed over time (Bquadratic = 0.05, p = .03). Generally, greater sedentary time predicted higher overall absolute diurnal cortisol levels (B < 0.01, p = .01); whereas higher physical activity (B = −0.004, p < .01), lower body mass index (B = 0.10, p < .01), and lower health- and cancer-related stress (B = 0.24, p = .04) predicted lower overall CRP levels. Also, lower absolute diurnal cortisol levels were evident when participants engaged in more sedentary time, as compared to their own average sedentary time (B = −0.01, p < .01). Conclusions Results offer insight into the nature of change in diurnal cortisol and CRP levels among BCS from treatment completion onwards and offer clinical implications. Helping BCS manage their weight, reduce stress, increase physical activity participation, and decrease sedentary time as soon as possible after treatment may help to reduce physiological dysregulations, thereby lowering the risk of adverse health outcomes in this population. Further research investigating specific intervention parameters such as type, context, frequency, and intensity are warranted for the development of the most optimal interventions.

Low-grade inflammation and endothelial dysfunction predict four-year risk and course of depressive symptoms: The Maastricht study. Brain Behav Immun 2021; 97:61-67. Abstract
BACKGROUND Low-grade inflammation (LGI) and endothelial dysfunction (ED) might play a key role in the development of depression. We investigated the associations and mediation of LGI and ED with four-year incidence and course of depressive symptoms (remitted, recurrent or persistent). DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, MEASUREMENTS In this prospective cohort study (mean age 59.6 ± 8.2 years, 48.9% women, 26.6% diabetes by design), Cox and multinomial regression analyses, adjusted for age, sex, educational level and diabetes status were used to investigate the associations of LGI and ED with onset and course of depressive symptoms as assessed by the PHQ-9 questionnaire. RESULTS During 10,847 person-years of follow-up, 264 participants developed incident depression. Higher levels of LGI (OR [95%CI] per SD 1.32[1.16-1.49], p < 0.001) and ED (1.26[1.11-1.43], p < 0.001) were associated with incident depressive symptoms. In mediation analysis, 60% of the total effect of ED with incident depressive symptoms could be attributed to LGI. 76 out of 2637 participants had a persistent course of depressive symptoms. Higher levels of LGI (1.75[1.40-2.19], p < 0.001) and ED (1.33[1.04-1.71], p = 0.021) were associated with a persistent course of depressive symptoms. Higher ED was more strongly associated with persistent depressive symptoms (1.33[1.04-1.71], p = 0.021), while LGI was associated with remission of depression symptoms. CONCLUSIONS LGI and ED were both associated with incident depressive symptoms, where the latter association was substantially mediated by LGI. ED was further associated with a persistent course of depressive symptoms, while LGI was not. These results suggest a temporal, vascular contribution of both LGI and ED to the etiology and chronicity of depressive symptoms.

Abstract
There is increasing interest in how immune cells, including those within the meninges at the blood-brain interface, influence brain function and mood disorders, but little data on humoral immunity in this context. Here, we show that in mice exposed to psychosocial stress, there is increased splenic B cell activation and secretion of the immunoregulatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-10. Meningeal B cells were prevalent in homeostasis but substantially decreased following stress, whereas Ly6Chi monocytes increased, and meningeal myeloid cells showed augmented expression of activation markers. Single-cell RNA sequencing of meningeal B cells demonstrated the induction of innate immune transcriptional programmes following stress, including genes encoding antimicrobial peptides that are known to alter myeloid cell activation. Cd19-/- mice, that have reduced B cells, showed baseline meningeal myeloid cell activation and decreased exploratory behaviour. Together, these data suggest that B cells may influence behaviour by regulating meningeal myeloid cell activation.

Abstract
Depression has a growing impact on public health. Accumulating evidence supports an association between depression and increased immune system activity. IL-10 is a key cytokine that inhibits excessive inflammatory responses and is related to the anti-inflammatory and protective functions of the central nervous system (CNS). Cx3cr1CreERIL-10-/- mice were used in our study. We aimed to identify the role of IL-10 in microglia in depression and anxiety-like behavior. We performed a series of behavioral tests on the mice; the Cx3cr1CreERIL-10-/- male mice showed depression- and anxiety-like behavior compared with the littermates. The expression of transient receptor potential canonical 5 (TRPC5) decreased in both the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and amygdala regions. The cytokines IL-1β and IL-6 increased, and IL-10 was decreased by western blotting. The knockout mice showed different trends in the effects of synaptic proteins. In the mPFC, IL-10 knockout induced a decrease in NR2B and synaptophysin; in the amygdala region, there was a significant increase in NR2B and PSD95. IL-10 knockout from microglia induced a decrease in GAD67 and parvalbumin (Pv) in the mPFC, but not in the amygdala. Our results showed enhanced depression and anxiety-like behavior in the Cx3cr1CreER IL-10-/- mice, which could be related to an imbalance in local excitatory and inhibitory transmission, as well as neuroinflammation in the mPFC and amygdala. This imbalance was associated with increased local inflammation. Although many studies have demonstrated the role of TRPC channels in emotional responses, our study showed that TRPC was not involved in this process in Cx3cr1CreERIL-10-/- mice.

Abstract
Previous research has demonstrated that perfectionism is implicated in poorer health and earlier mortality. However, to our knowledge, research has not yet determined how individual differences in perfectionistic cognitions are related to intermediary health markers such as inflammation. Thus, within the theoretical frameworks of the perfectionism diathesis-stress model (Hewitt and Flett, 1993) and the cognitive theory of perfectionism (Flett et al., 2018; Flett et al., 2016) the aims of our study were to test whether individual differences in perfectionistic cognitions were associated with low-grade inflammation via c-reactive CRP and IL-6 biomarkers and whether these relationships varied as a function perceived stress. The sample included 248 Canadian young adults (52% female, Mage = 22.89, SD = 1.53) who completed surveys assessing key constructs such as perfectionistic cognitions and perceived stress along with providing assessments of body fat percentage and serum samples of IL-6 and CRP. Regression analyses indicated that perfectionistic cognitions were not related to IL-6 under any conditions of stress. However, under high levels of stress perfectionistic cognitions were associated with elevated levels of CRP and these findings held after accounting for the effects of smoking status, body fat percentage, and respondent sex. The present work adds to the growing body of evidence supporting links between personality and inflammation. These findings raise the possibility that experiencing more frequent thoughts centered on the need to be perfect when coupled with higher levels of stress may set the stage for greater vulnerability for chronic inflammation. Perfectionistic cognitions were related to elevated levels of CRP under high levels of perceived stress. Perfectionistic cognitions were not related to CRP under low or moderate levels of perceived stress. Perfectionistic cognitions were not related to IL-6 under any conditions of stress.

Abstract
Schizophrenia (SZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are severe mental disorders, which have been associated with alterations of the peripheral inflammatory network. However, studies for both disorders have not been fully consistent and have focused on few canonical markers with high relevance to the innate immune system, while the role of the adaptive immune system is studied less. Furthermore, it is unclear to what extent inflammatory abnormalities are diagnosis-specific or transdiagnostic. The purpose of this study was to investigate 75 peripheral inflammatory markers including the acute phase protein high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in patients with MDD (n = 37), SZ (n = 42) and healthy controls (HC) (n = 17), while considering possible confounders and correcting rigorously for multiple testing in group comparisons. We identified C–C chemokine ligand 20 (CCL20) and tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) as the inflammatory markers with significant group differences after controlling for multiple comparisons and adjusting for BMI, sex and smoking as confounders. TRAIL was elevated in both MDD and SZ compared to HC. CCL20 was specifically increased in SZ compared to MDD and HC. There were no significant group differences in hsCRP after correcting for multiple testing. Finally, we observed no significant correlations among CCL20, TRAIL and CRP. TRAIL is a transdiagnostic marker for SZ and MDD, with both markers being independent from CRP and body mass index (BMI). CCL20 may be a novel and specific biomarker of schizophrenia, but an influence of antipsychotic medication cannot be excluded. Identifying novel markers in mental disease bears the potential for future research towards novel treatment strategies by modifying inflammation-related processes.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic is spreading around the world and 187 million people have already been affected. One of its after-effects is post-COVID depression, which, according to the latest data, affects up to 40% of people who have had SARS-CoV-2 infection. A very important issue for the mental health of the general population is to look for the causes of this complication and its biomarkers. This will help in faster diagnosis and effective treatment of the affected patients. In our work, we focused on the search for major depressive disorder (MDD) biomarkers, which are also present in COVID-19 patients and may influence the development of post-COVID depression. For this purpose, we searched PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar scientific literature databases using keywords such as 'COVID-19', 'SARS-CoV-2', 'depression', 'post-COVID', 'biomarkers' and others. Among the biomarkers found, the most important that were frequently described are increased levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6), soluble interleukin 6 receptor (sIL-6R), interleukin 1 β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin 10 (IL-10), interleukin 2 (IL-2), soluble interleukin 2 receptor (sIL-2R), C-reactive protein (CRP), Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1), serum amyloid a (SAA1) and metabolites of the kynurenine pathway, as well as decreased brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and tryptophan (TRP). The biomarkers identified by us indicate the etiopathogenesis of post-COVID depression analogous to the leading inflammatory hypothesis of MDD.

Abstract
Rationale Depression is a prevalent comorbidity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that, along with COPD, has been associated with inflammation. An association between inflammation and depression in COPD has not been validated in a large COPD cohort. Methods Individuals from the University of Pittsburgh SCCOR cohort and the COPDGene cohort with tobacco use history and airway obstruction (FEV1/FVC <0.7) were evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), respectively. Participants completed symptom-related questionnaires and plasma IL-6 measurements. T-test, Fisher’s Exact tests and logistic regression were used for statistical analysis. Results The SCCOR cohort included 220 obstructed participants: 44% female and 21.4% with elevated depressive symptoms. GOLD staging distribution was predominantly stage I and II. The COPDGene cohort included 745 obstructed participants: 44% female and 13.0% with elevated depressive symptoms. GOLD distribution was predominantly stage II and III. In the SCCOR cohort, correlation between IL-6 and depressive symptoms trended toward significance (p= 0.08). Multivariable modeling adjusted for FEV1, age, gender and medical comorbidities showed a significant association (OR = 1.70, 95% CI = 1.08–2.69). IL-6 was significantly associated with elevated depressive symptoms in COPDGene in both univariate (p=0.001) and multivariable modeling (OR = 1.52, 95% CI =1.13–2.04). Conclusion Elevated plasma IL-6 levels are associated with depressive symptoms in individuals with COPD independent of airflow limitation and comorbid risk factors for depression. Our results suggest that systemic inflammation may play a significant and possibly bidirectional role in depression associated with COPD.
