Abstract
BACKGROUND Irisin, as a myokine, plays a protective role against cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction, atherosclerosis and hypertension. However, whether irisin attenuates salt-sensitive hypertension and the related underlying mechanisms is unknown. METHODS Male Dahl salt-resistant (DSR) and Dahl salt-sensitive (DSS) (12 weeks) rats were fed a high salt diet (8% NaCl) with or without irisin treatment by intraperitoneal injection for 8 weeks. RESULTS Compared with DSR rats, DSS rats showed higher systolic blood pressure (SBP), impaired natriuresis and diuresis and renal dysfunction. In addition, it was accompanied by downregulation of renal p-AMPKα and upregulation of renal RAC1 and nuclear mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). Irisin intervention could significantly up-regulated renal p-AMPKα level and down-regulated renal RAC1-MR signal, thereby improving renal sodium excretion and renal function, and ultimately reducing blood pressure in DSS rats. Ex vivo treatment with irisin reduced the expression of RAC1 and nuclear MR in primary renal distal convoluted tubule cells from DSS rats and the effects of irisin were abolished by cotreatment of compound C (AMPK inhibitor), indicating that the regulation of RAC1-MR signals by irisin depended on the activation of AMPK. CONCLUSIONS Irisin administration lowered salt-sensitive hypertension through regulating RAC1-MR signaling via activation of AMPK, which may be a promising therapeutic approach for salt-sensitive hypertension.

Abstract
The inflammatory status of the kidneys, vasculature, and perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) has a significant influence on blood pressure and hypertension. Numerous micronutrients play an influential role in hypertension-driving inflammatory processes, and recent reports have provided bases for potential targeted modulation of these micronutrients to reduce hypertension. Iron overload in adipose tissue macrophages and adipocytes engenders an inflammatory environment and may contribute to impaired anticontractile signalling, and thus a treatment such as chelation therapy may hold a key to reducing blood pressure. Similarly, magnesium intake has proven to greatly influence inflammatory signalling and concurrent hypertension in both healthy animals and in a model for chronic kidney disease, demonstrating its potential clinical utility. These findings highlight the importance of further research to determine the efficacy of micronutrient-targeted treatments for the amelioration of hypertension and their potential translation into clinical application.

Abstract
Pea (Pisum sativum L.), a widely cultivated legumes globally, is attracting interest as a functional food owing to its antioxidant properties derived from nutritional components such as polyphenols. We previously reported that yellow pea-based pasta (YPP) aids in controlling blood glucose and enhances the sensitivity to saltiness. This study examined the antioxidant effect of YPP and its effects on the salt intake and postprandial blood glucose levels by simulating a real-life scenario. In this open, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial, 40 healthy adult men and women aged 20-65 years, whose salt intake exceeded the target salt equivalent level of the Japanese dietary intake standard, were allocated to the following groups (n = 20): the group consuming one serving of YPP per day and the group maintaining their regular daily dietary habits. The participants who were allocated to the YPP group showed significantly improved oxidative stress markers (BAP/d-ROMs ratio change: control = - 0.11, YPP = 0.27, p = 0.044; lipid peroxide change: control = 0.11, YPP = - 0.25, p < 0.001) than control participants. The effects on salt intake and blood glucose levels were limited. In conclusion, YPP may serve as a functional staple food that improves oxidative stress.

Abstract
Background: Albuminuria and albumin excretion rate (AER) are important risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) development. Despite the extensive evidence of the influence of sodium and potassium on cardiovascular health, the existing evidence regarding their impact on albuminuria and kidney disease is limited and inconsistent. Our study aimed to assess the correlation between urinary sodium and potassium excretion, and the sodium-to-potassium ratio (Na/K ratio) with impaired kidney function, particularly the AER and albuminuria. Materials and Methods: Data were collected from the Lithuanian NATRIJOD study. A total of 826 single 24-h urine samples from individuals aged 18 to 69 were collected and analyzed for their sodium and potassium levels, Na/K ratio, and AER. Albuminuria was defined as an AER exceeding 30 mg/24 h. Results: The participant mean age was 47.2 ± 12.1 years; 48.5% of the participants were male. The prevalence of albuminuria was 3%. Correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between AER and urinary sodium excretion (rs = 0.21; p < 0.001) and urinary potassium excretion (rs = 0.28; p < 0.001). In univariate linear regression analysis, sodium and potassium excretion and the Na/K ratio were significant AER predictors with β coefficients of 0.028 (95% CI: 0.015; 0.041; p < 0.001), 0.040 (95% CI: 0.003; 0.077; p = 0.035), and 1.234 (95% CI: 0.210; 2.259; p = 0.018), respectively. In the multivariable model, only urinary sodium excretion remained significant, with a β coefficient of 0.028 (95% CI: 0.016; 0.041). Potential albuminuria predictive factors identified via univariate logistic regression included urinary sodium excretion (OR 1.00; 95% CI: 1:00; 1.01) and the Na/K ratio (OR 1.53; 95% CI: 1.11; 2.05). However, these factors became statistically insignificant in the multivariate model. Conclusions: Urinary sodium and potassium excretion and the Na/K ratio are significantly associated with kidney damage, considering the assessed 24-h albumin excretion rate and presence of albuminuria content.

Abstract
The Indian Society of Hypertension (InSH) highlights the urgency for India-specific guidelines on hypertension management. Hypertension affects over one billion people worldwide, with India bearing a significant burden due to its population, diversity, and demographics. In India, hypertension affects 21% of women and 24% of men, while pre-hypertension affects 39% of women and 49% of men. The prevalence of hypertension increases in the population with obesity. Even 7% of school-going children in India have hypertension, especially in urban and overweight children. However, awareness and control of hypertension in India are inadequate. Only 57% of women and 38% of men have been diagnosed with hypertension; among them, only a fraction receive appropriate medication. The overall control of hypertension stands at 15%, with regional variations. Hypertension significantly contributes to cardiovascular and renal diseases, and better detection and treatment could reduce their impact in India. At the total population level, reducing systolic blood pressure (SBP) by 2 mm Hg may significantly affect cardiovascular disease. Considering the unique challenges faced in India, the InSH stresses the importance of a tailored approach to hypertension management. They plan to disseminate guidelines through practitioner training and patient awareness campaigns. These guidelines will cover screening, diagnosis, management, handling hypertension with other conditions, long-term follow-up, and patient education. In conclusion, this position paper calls for immediate action to improve hypertension management in India and alleviate the associated disease burden and mortality.

Abstract
Atrial and brain natriuretic peptides (ANP and BNP) bind to guanylyl cyclase A/natriuretic peptide receptor A (GC-A/NPRA), stimulating natriuresis and diuresis and reducing blood pressure (BP), but the role of ANP/NPRA signaling in podocytes (highly specialized epithelial cells covering the outer surfaces of renal glomerular capillaries) remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the effect of conditional deletion of podocyte-specific Npr1 (encoding NPRA) gene knockout (KO) in male and female mice. Tamoxifen-treated wild-type control (PD Npr1 f/f; WT), heterozygous (PD-Cre-Npr1 f/+; HT), and KO (PD-Cre-Npr1 f/-) mice were fed a normal-, low-, or high-salt diet for 4 wk. Podocytes isolated from HT and KO male and female mice showed complete absence of Npr1 mRNA and NPRA protein compared with WT mice. BP, plasma creatinine, plasma sodium, urinary protein, and albumin/creatinine ratio were significantly increased, whereas plasma total protein, albumin, creatinine clearance, and urinary sodium levels were significantly reduced in the HT and KO male and female mice compared with WT mice. These changes were significantly greater in males than in females. On a normal-salt diet, glomerular filtration rate was significantly decreased in PD Npr1 HT and KO male and female mice compared with WT mice. Immunofluorescence of podocin and synaptopodin was also significantly reduced in HT and KO mice compared with WT mice. These observations suggest that in podocytes, ANP/NPRA signaling may be crucial in the maintenance and regulation of glomerular filtration and BP and serve as a biomarker of renal function in a sex-dependent manner.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Our results demonstrate that the podocyte-specific deletion of Npr1 showed increased blood pressure (BP) and altered biomarkers of renal functions, with greater magnitudes in animals fed a high-salt diet in a sex-dependent manner. The results suggest a direct and sex-dependent effect of Npr1 ablation in podocytes on the regulation of BP and renal function and reveal that podocytes may be considered an important target for the ANP-BNP/NPRA/cGMP signaling cascade.

Abstract
Sodium serves as one of the primary cations in the central nervous system, playing a crucial role in maintaining normal brain function. In this study, we investigated alterations in sodium concentrations in the brain and/or cerebrospinal fluid across multiple models, including an aging model, a stroke model, a nitroglycerin (NTG)-induced rat migraine model, a familial hemiplegic migraine type 2 (FHM2) mouse model, and a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our results reveal that older rats exhibited higher sodium concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), plasma, and various brain regions compared to their younger counterparts. Additionally, findings from the stroke model demonstrated a significant increase in sodium in the ischemic/reperfused region, accompanied by a decrease in potassium and an elevated sodium/potassium ratio. However, we did not detect significant changes in sodium in the NTG-induced rat migraine model or the FHM2 mouse model. Furthermore, AD transgenic mice showed no significant differences in sodium levels compared to wild-type mice in CSF, plasma, or the hippocampus. These results underscore the nuanced regulation of sodium homeostasis in various neurological conditions and aging, providing valuable insights into potential mechanisms underlying these alterations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension is a recognized risk factor that underlies the epidemic of cardiovascular diseases. Guidelines, including those from the European Society of Hypertension, recommend opportunistic screening for hypertension in all adults. However, there have been no institution-based studies on the prevalence of hypertension and its associated factors with an opportunistic screening program in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of newly diagnosed hypertension and its associated factors in an opportunistic screening program in Ethiopia. METHODS This was an institution-based cross-sectional study conducted on adult participants in an opportunistic hypertension screening program at Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from November 1, 2023, to February 1, 2024. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, constructed as per the WHO STEPwise approach to non-communicable disease risk factor surveillance (STEPS). The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 26. Descriptive analysis was used to compile the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the participants, and logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the factors associated with hypertension. RESULTS A total of 301 adult participants were included in this study. The mean age of the participants was 47.6 years (standard deviation: 13.5), and 62.5% were males. The prevalence of newly diagnosed hypertension was 36.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.6, 66.8). Male sex (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 2.06, 95% (CI): 1.05, 4.04), being married (AOR = 4.8, 95% CI: 1.84, 2.77) or widowed (AOR = 5.14, 95% CI: 1.23, 1.46), less frequent intake of vegetables and/or fruits [< 3 days per week (AOR = 2.88, 95% CI: 1.12, 7.39), and 3 to 5 days per week (AOR = 2.22, 95% CI: 1.02, 4.86)], physical inactivity (AOR = 2.26, 95% CI: 1.21, 4.22), and body mass index (AOR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.26), had significant associations with hypertension. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated a high prevalence of newly diagnosed hypertension in an opportunistic screening program in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It also revealed that most of the factors significantly associated with hypertension were modifiable, underscoring the importance of promoting lifestyle changes. Most importantly, expanding institution-based opportunistic screening programs could be an effective approach to maximize the detection of hypertension and improve access to its treatment.

Abstract
Purpose Given the increasing occurrence of stroke and high-sodium diets (DHIS) over the past 30 years, it is crucial to assess the global, national, and regional impact of DHIS on the burden of stroke. Methods and materials The Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 provided the study's data. We used the Bayesian meta-regression tool DisMod-MR 2.1 to evaluate the burden of stroke attributable to DHIS. Age-standardized disability-adjusted life years (ASDR) and age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) were used to quantify the burden. We perform correlation analysis utilizing the Spearman rank-order correlation method, and we calculate the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) to evaluate temporal trends. Results Globally, DHIS accounts for 17,673.33 thousand disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and 700.98 thousand deaths of stroke in 2019. The burden of stroke attributable to DHIS has declined between 1990 and 2019 globally and in the majority of regions, with the largest declines seen in regions with high sociodemographic indexes (SDI). Both ASMR and ASDR were higher regionally in regions with moderate SDI than those in developed regions. Furthermore, the absolute values of EAPC, reflecting the rate of decrease, were notably lower in these regions compared to developed nations. High-income North America, categorized within the SDI regions, notably witnessed the smallest decline in ASDR over the last three decades. Additionally, from 1990 to 2019, males consistently bore a larger burden of stroke attributable to DHIS. Conclusion The burden of stroke attributable to DHIS remained a major concern despite advancements in public knowledge of stroke and their utilization of emergency medical services. Over the past 30 years, more burden has been placed on males and regions with moderate SDI values; in males, higher EAPC values for both ASMR and ASDR have been found. This underscores the urgent need for effective interventions to alleviate the burden of stroke associated with DHIS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Denervation of renal or perirenal adipose tissue (PRAT) can reduce arterial blood pressure in various hypertensive experimental models. Trpv1 (transient receptor potential vanillin 1) channel is highly expressed in the renal sensory nerves and the dorsal root ganglias (DRGs) projected by PRAT. However, it is currently unclear whether Trpv1 in DRGs projected from PRAT can regulate renal hypertension. METHODS We used resintoxin (RTX) to block the afferent sensory nerves of rat PRAT. We also constructed Trpv1 -/- mice and Trpv1 +/- mice or used the injection of AAV2-retro-shTrpv1 to detect the effects of Trpv1 knockout or knockdown of PRAT-projected DRGs on deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-Salt-induced hypertension and kidney injury. RESULTS Blocking the afferent sensory nerves of PRAT with RTX can alleviate DOCA-Salt-induced hypertension and renal injury in rats. And this blockade reduces the expression of Trpv1 in the DRGs projected by PRAT. Injecting AAV2-retro-shTrpv1 into the PRAT of DOCA-Salt mice also achieved the same therapeutic effect. However, DOCA-Salt-induced hypertension and renal injury can be treated in Trpv1 +/- mice but not alleviated or even worsened in Trpv1 -/- mice, possibly because of compensatory increase of Trpv5 in DRG of Trpv1 -/- mice. CONCLUSION Reducing, rather than eliminating, Trpv1 in DRG from PRAT-projection can reduce blood pressure and kidney damage in DOCA-Salt in rats or mice. Trpv1 in PRAT-DRGs may serve as a therapeutic target for salt-sensitive hypertension and its renal complications.

Abstract
The incidence of subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAHs) in Japan has recently decreased. However, trends in the annual rates of unruptured cerebral aneurysms (UCAs) are unclear because calculations based on follow-up periods are limited to patients with ruptured cerebral aneurysms. We aimed to clarify current trends in the estimated annual rupture rates of UCAs in Japan and to identify the most relevant contributing factors. We analyzed data from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and records of the Japan Neurosurgical Society. The estimated annual rupture rates of UCAs between 2003 and 2018 were calculated according to age-adjusted mortality rates of SAH and number of treated ruptured cerebral aneurysms (RCAs). We estimated trends in annual rupture rates using sensitivity analysis and assessed associations between estimated annual rupture rates and the prevalences of hypertension and current smoking. The estimated annual rupture rate of UCAs significantly decreased from 1.44 to 0.87% and from 0.92 to 0.76%, respectively, in terms of age-adjusted mortality rates of SAH and number of treated RCAs (p < 0.001). The range of changes in estimated annual rupture rates of UCAs was - 1.13%‒0.83%, representing a declining UCA trend of 88%. The estimated annual rupture rates of UCAs declined by 0.02-0.10% and 0.01-0.05% with every percent decrease in hypertension and current smoking prevalence, respectively. The estimated annual rupture rate of UCAs has recently decreased in Japan, possibly due to a decrease in the prevalence of hypertension rather than smoking.

Abstract
Dietary modifications play a crucial role in blood pressure management, and although body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are significant predictors of hypertension, limited studies have explored their relationship with dietary habits. This cross-sectional study conducted in Ganzhou, China, focused on middle-aged and elderly residents to investigate the correlation between dietary habits and BMI, WC, and their interaction impact on hypertension. The study found that salty and sweet intake correlated positively with BMI and WC, whereas bean and coarse grain intake were negatively correlated. A significant interaction effect was showed between dietary habits, and BMI and WC on hypertension. Specifically, individuals with obesity or central obesity combined with poor dietary habits had higher odds of hypertension. This study aims to provide a theoretical basis for nutritional interventions for middle-aged and elderly residents with varying obesity levels for the prevention and treatment of hypertension at the community level. The study concluded that dietary habits are significantly associated with BMI and WC, and poor dietary habits coexistence with obesity or central obesity can increase the prevalence rate of hypertension. Understanding these relationships can help develop strategies to address hypertension through dietary and lifestyle changes, providing valuable insights for healthcare professionals and policymakers to develop effective interventions addressing this growing global health concern.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High salt intake has been proposed as a risk factor for dementia. However, causal relationship between salt intake and dementia remains uncertain. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to employ a mendelian randomization (MR) design to investigate the causal impact of salt intake on the risk of dementia. METHODS Genome-wide association study (GWAS) data of exposures and outcomes (any dementia, cognitive performance, different types of dementia, Alzheimer's disease [AD], and Parkinson's disease) were obtained from the IEU database. MR estimates were generated though inverse-variance weighted model. MR-Egger, weighted median, and MR-Pleiotropy Residual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO) method also used in our study. Sensitivity analyses included Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept, MR-PRESSO global test and outlier test, leave-one-out analysis, and funnel plot assessment. RESULTS Our MR analysis provided evidence of a causal association between high salt added to food and dementia (odds ratio [OR] = 1.73, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.21-2.49, and p = .003), dementia in AD (OR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.15-3.83, and p = .015), and undefined dementia (OR = 2.61, 95% CI: 1.26-5.39, and p = .009). Higher salt added was also associated with increased risk of AD (OR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.12-2.87, and p = .014) and lower cognitive performance (β = -.133, 95% CI: -.229 to -.038, and p = .006). CONCLUSION This study provides evidence suggesting that high salt intake is causally associated with an increased risk of developing dementia, including AD and undefined dementia, highlighting the potential importance of reducing salt consumption as a preventive measure.

Abstract
Background & objectives Pink salt and monosodium glutamate (MSG) are two typical food additives used in cooking to enhance flavour. However, excessive use of them has been associated to a variety of metabolic problems, including weight gain and hyperglycemia. The current study aimed to assess the metabolic changes caused by submaximal dosages of MSG and pink salt in experimental rats. Methods Twenty-four 120-150 g Wister rats of both sexes were divided into three groups: control, pink salt-treated (0.8 g/kg daily for three weeks), and MSG-treated (3.6 g/kg daily for three weeks). The body weight, amount of food and water consumed, and blood glucose levels of animals were measured and recorded as indicators of their metabolic changes. Furthermore, after salt treatments at intervals such as week 1, week 2, and week 3, the survival rate and general toxicity manifestations were determined. The results were statistically analysed using one-way ANOVA, with p < 0.05 being considered significant. Results The study found that the group given a submaximal dose of MSG gained significantly more weight (p < 0.05), consumed more food and water, and had higher blood glucose levels than the control. Ninety percent of the MSG therapy group survived by the end of the third week, however, they suffered from negative effects like abdominal distention, respiratory problems, ptosis, and subcutaneous swelling. On the other hand, the consumption of food and drink was significantly (p < 0.05) increased upon the administration of pink salt. Only little changes were observed in the body weight, blood sugar levels, and general features (such as subcutaneous swelling, change in bowel colour, and loose stools). Additionally, it was shown that the survival rate remained unchanged, particularly after week 3. Conclusion According to study findings, MSG may induce metabolic issues, increasing the chance of death. While there was no discernible metabolic aberration linked to pink salt. Further research is required to fully understand the mechanism and consequences of these taste enhancers on the host system before pink salt can be deemed safe.

A hyperhaline model can improve fermentation speed, but easily leads to the contamination of miscellaneous bacteria and fermentation failure. In this study, after the conventional koji and moromi fermentation, the fermentation broth was pasteurized and diluted, and then inoculated with three selected microorganisms including Corynebacterium glutamicum, Corynebacterium ammoniagenes, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum for secondary fermentation. During this ten-day fermentation, the pH, free amino acids, organic acids, nucleotide acids, fatty acids, and volatile compounds were analyzed. The fermentation group inoculated with C. glutamicum accumulated the high content of amino acid nitrogen of 0.92 g/100 mL and glutamic acid of 509.4 mg/100 mL. The C. ammoniagenes group and L. plantarum group were rich in nucleotide and organic acid, respectively. The fermentation group inoculated with three microorganisms exhibited the best sensory attributes, showing the potential to develop a suitable fermentation method. The brewing speed of the proposed process in this study was faster than that of the traditional method, and the umami substances could be significantly accumulated in this low-salt fermented model (7% w/v NaCl). This study provides a reference for the low-salt and rapid fermentation of seasoning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The prevalence of hypertension is increasing, and noodles have a high sodium content, so noodle consumption might be associated with a higher prevalence of hypertension. This study aimed to analyze the association between total and types of noodle intake and the risk of hypertension among Korean adults. Subjects aged 40-69 years were selected for this study. SUBJECTS/METHODS This study included 56,580 participants (18,246 men and 38,334 women) aged 40-69 years old from the Health Examinees study. Noodle and nutrient intakes were assessed using the food frequency questionnaire. Hypertension was diagnosed as systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg or antihypertensive medication use. Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for hypertension. RESULTS Higher noodle consumption was associated with increased hypertension among men (HR, 1.273; 95% CI, 1.166-1.390) and women (HR, 1.116; 95% CI, 1.038-1.199). CONCLUSION We recommended reducing noodle intake and consuming vegetables and fruits to increase potassium intake, which can prevent vascular diseases.

Abstract
The matrix glycoprotein thrombospondin-1 (THBS1) modulates nitric oxide (NO) signaling in endothelial cells. A high-salt diet induces deficiencies of NO production and bioavailability, thereby leading to endothelial dysfunction. In this study we investigated the changes of THBS1 expression and its pathological role in the dysfunction of mesenteric artery endothelial cells (MAECs) induced by a high-salt diet. Wild-type rats, and wild-type and Thbs1-/- mice were fed chow containing 8% w/w NaCl for 4 weeks. We showed that a high salt diet significantly increased THBS1 expression and secretion in plasma and MAECs, and damaged endothelium-dependent vasodilation of mesenteric resistance arteries in wild-type animals, but not in Thbs1-/- mice. In rat MAECs, we demonstrated that a high salt environment (10-40 mM) dose-dependently increased THBS1 expression accompanied by suppressed endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and phospho-eNOS S1177 production as well as NO release. Blockade of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) activity by a TGF-β1 inhibitor SB 431542 reversed THBS1 up-regulation, rescued the eNOS decrease, enhanced phospho-eNOS S1177 expression, and inhibited Smad4 translocation to the nucleus. By conducting dual-luciferase reporter experiments in HEK293T cells, we demonstrated that Smad4, a transcription promoter, upregulated Thbs1 transcription. We conclude that THBS1 contributes to endothelial dysfunction in a high-salt environment and may be a potential target for treatment of high-salt-induced endothelium dysfunction.

Abstract
CONTEXT Black women have a higher prevalence of hypertension as compared to White women. Differences in dietary sodium intake have been implicated as a contributing factor for the disparities in hypertension. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to understand whether young Black women would have higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) than White women even on controlled sodium diets and to determine whether SBP differences were due to differences in dietary sodium intake and/or aldosterone regulation. DESIGN The analyses included 525 hypertensive and normotensive women (ages 18-71) from the International Hypertensive Pathotype consortium, who were maintained on liberal sodium (LIB; >200 mEq sodium/day) and restricted sodium (RES; 10 mEq sodium/day) diets. RESULTS Multivariate regression analyses (adjusted for age, race, study site, body mass index) found that Black women (ages 18-50) had significantly higher SBP than White women on both sodium diets: +8.7 ± 2.7 mmHg (P-value = .002) on a LIB diet and +8.5 ± 2.5 mmHg (P-value = .001) on a RES diet. Even among 18- to 35-year-olds-who were normotensive and nonobese-Black women had higher SBP: +7.9 ± 2.4 mmHg (P-value = .001) on a LIB diet and +7.6 ± 2.7 mmHg (P-value = .005) on a RES diet. Younger Black women also had higher plasma aldosterone concentration to plasma renin activity ratio (ARR) on both LIB and RES diets as well as a higher sodium-modulated aldosterone suppression-stimulation index-an indicator of aldosterone dysregulation. In younger Black women-but not in White women-there was a significant association between SBP and ARR on both LIB and RES diets. CONCLUSION Young Black women had increased SBP and ARR as compared to White women on LIB and RES diets, which offers insights into the possible mechanisms for the increased hypertension and cardiovascular disease risk in an at-risk and understudied population.

Abstract
It is widely known that optimal nutrition in the first 1000 days of life positively impacts the child's development throughout adulthood. In this setting, salt should not be added to complementary feeding. In developed countries, salt intake is generally higher than recommended for children. Excessive salt intake is the major determinant of hypertension and is associated with several cardiovascular outcomes. Therefore, pediatricians have a key role in raising awareness among parents to avoid salt consumption in the first 1000 days of life to ensure better health for their children. Starting from a review of the literature published in PubMed/MedLine regarding the short- and long-term consequences of salt consumption during the first 1000 days of life, our comprehensive review aims to analyze the beneficial effects of avoiding salt at such a vulnerable stage of life as the first 1000 days. Obesity, hypertension, increased salt sensitivity, high sweet drink consumption, increased mortality, and morbidity persisting in adult age represent the principal consequences of a higher salt intake during the first 1000 days of life.

Abstract
Salt sensitivity impacts a significant portion of the population and is an important contributor to the development of chronic kidney disease. One of the significant early predictors of salt-induced damage is albuminuria, which reflects the deterioration of the renal filtration barrier: the glomerulus. Despite significant research efforts, there is still a gap in knowledge regarding the molecular mechanisms and signaling networks contributing to instigating and/or perpetuating salt-induced glomerular injury. To address this gap, we used 8-wk-old male Dahl salt-sensitive rats fed a normal-salt diet (0.4% NaCl) or challenged with a high-salt diet (4% NaCl) for 3 wk. At the end of the protocol, a pure fraction of renal glomeruli obtained by differential sieving was used for next-generation RNA sequencing and comprehensive semi-automatic transcriptomic data analyses, which revealed 149 differentially expressed genes (107 and 42 genes were downregulated and upregulated, respectively). Furthermore, a combination of predictive gene correlation networks and computational bioinformatic analyses revealed pathways impacted by a high salt dietary challenge, including renal metabolism, mitochondrial function, apoptotic signaling and fibrosis, cell cycle, inflammatory and immune responses, circadian clock, cytoskeletal organization, G protein-coupled receptor signaling, and calcium transport. In conclusion, we report here novel transcriptomic interactions and corresponding predicted pathways affecting glomeruli under salt-induced stress.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Our study demonstrated novel pathways affecting glomeruli under stress induced by dietary salt. Predictive gene correlation networks and bioinformatic semi-automatic analysis revealed changes in the pathways relevant to mitochondrial function, inflammatory, apoptotic/fibrotic processes, and cell calcium transport.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anthocyanin plays a protective role in cardiovascular disease through antioxidant effect. Whether anthocyanin can reduce salt-induced hypertension and the related mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS Chronic infusion of vehicle (artificial cerebrospinal fluid, aCSF, 0.4 μL/h) or anthocyanin (10 mg/kg, 0.4 μL/h) into bilateral paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of Sprague-Dawley rats was performed. Then, the rats were fed a high salt diet (8% NaCl, HS) or normal salt diet (0.9%, NaCl, NS) for 4 weeks. RESULTS High salt diet induced an increase in blood pressure and peripheral sympathetic nerve activity (increased LF/HF and decreased SDNN and RMSSD), which was accompanied by increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and angiotensin II type-1 receptor (AT1R) expression and function in the PVN. Moreover, the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) and related inflammatory proteins (caspase-1) expression, the pro-inflammatory cytokine levels including IL-1β and TNF-α were higher in PVN of rats with a high salt diet. Bilateral PVN infusion of anthocyanin attenuated NLRP3-dependent inflammation (NLRP3, caspase-1, IL-1β and TNF-α) and ROS production, reduced AT1R expression and function in PVN and lowered peripheral sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure in rats with salt-induced hypertension. CONCLUSIONS Excessive salt intake activates NLRP3-dependent inflammation and oxidative stress and increased AT1R expression and function in the PVN. Bilateral PVN infusion of anthocyanin lowers peripheral sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure in rats with salt-induced hypertension by improvement of expression and function of AT1R in the PVN through inhibiting NLRP3 related inflammatory and oxidative stress.

Abstract
SCOPE High salinity has been reported to induce many human disorders in tissues and organs to interfere with their normal physiological functions. However, it is unknown how salinity affects the development of female germ cells. This study suggests that a high-salt diet (HSD) may weaken oocyte quality to impair female fertility in mice and investigates the underlying mechanisms. METHODS AND RESULTS C57BL/6 female mice are fed with a regular diet (Control) or a high-salt diet (HSD). Oocyte maturation, fertilization rate, embryonic development, and female fertility are evaluated. In addition, the spindle organization, actin polymerization, and kinetochore-microtubule attachment of oocytes are examined in both groups. Moreover, single-cell transcriptome data are used to demonstrate how HSD alters the transcript levels of genes. The observations confirm that HSD leads to female subfertility due to the deterioration of oocyte and embryo quality. The mechanism underlying reveals HSD compromises the oocytes' autophagy, apoptosis level, and mitochondrial function. CONCLUSION The work illustrates that a high concentration of salt diet results in oocyte meiotic arrest, fertilization failure, and early developmental defection that embryos undergo to reduce female fertility in mice by perturbing the level of autophagy and apoptosis, mitochondrial function in oocytes.

Abstract
Background This Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) Clinical Practice Statement (CPS) provides an overview of the mechanisms and treatment of obesity and hypertension. Methods The scientific support for this CPS is based upon published citations, clinical perspectives of OMA authors, and peer review by the Obesity Medicine Association leadership. Results Mechanisms contributing to obesity-related hypertension include unhealthful nutrition, physical inactivity, insulin resistance, increased sympathetic nervous system activity, renal dysfunction, vascular dysfunction, heart dysfunction, increased pancreatic insulin secretion, sleep apnea, and psychosocial stress. Adiposopathic factors that may contribute to hypertension include increased release of free fatty acids, increased leptin, decreased adiponectin, increased renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activation, increased 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1, reduced nitric oxide activity, and increased inflammation. Conclusions Increase in body fat is the most common cause of hypertension. Among patients with obesity and hypertension, weight reduction via healthful nutrition, physical activity, behavior modification, bariatric surgery, and anti-obesity medications mostly decrease blood pressure, with the greatest degree of weight reduction generally correlated with the greatest degree of blood pressure reduction.

Abstract
Purpose: Interventional approaches to treat hypertension are an emerging option that may be suitable for patients whose BP control cannot be achieved with lifestyle and/or pharmacotherapy and possibly for those who do not wish to take drug therapy.Materials and Methods: Interventional strategies include renal denervation with radiofrequency, ultrasound and alcohol-mediated platforms as well as baroreflex activation therapy and cardiac neuromodulation therapy. Presently renal denervation is the most advanced of the therapeutic options and is currently being commercialised in the EU.Results: It is apparent that RDN is effective in both unmedicated patients and patients with more severe hypertension including those with resistant hypertension.Conclusion: However, at present there is no evidence for the use of RDN in patients with secondary forms of hypertension and thus evaluation to rule these out is necessary before proceeding with a procedure. Furthermore, there are numerous pitfalls in the diagnosis and management of secondary hypertension which need to be taken into consideration. Finally, prior to performing an intervention it is appropriate to document presence/absence of hypertension-mediated organ damage.

Abstract
Hypertension is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Angiotensinogen (AGT) is a component of RAAS, that regulates blood pressure. The human angiotensinogen (hAGT) gene has -6A/-6G polymorphism and -6A variant is associated with human hypertension. In this study, we have investigated the epigenetic regulation of the hAGT. To understand transcriptional regulation of the hAGT, we have made transgenic animals containing -6A. We show that HS affects DNA methylation and modulates transcriptional regulation of this gene in liver and kidney. High salt (HS) increases hAGT gene expression in -6A TG mice. We have observed that the number of CpG sites in the hAGT promoter is decreased after HS treatment. In the liver, seven CpG sites are methylated whereas after HS treatment, only three CpG sites remain methylated. In the kidney, five CpG sites are methylated, whereas after HS treatment, only three CpG sites remain methylated. These results suggest that HS promotes DNA demethylation and increasing AGT gene expression. RT-PCR and immunoblot analysis show that hAGT gene expression is increased by HS. Chip assay has shown that transcription factors bind strongly after HS treatment. RNA-Seq identified differentially expressed genes, novel target genes associated with hypertension, top canonical pathways, upstream regulators. One of the plausible mechanisms for HS induced up-regulation of the hAGT gene is through IL-6/JAK/STAT3/AGT axis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both diabetic and hypertensive nephropathy eventually progress to glomerulosclerosis. Previous studies revealed a potential role of endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) in the pathophysiology of glomerulosclerosis in diabetic rats. Therefore, we hypothesized that EndMT was also involved in the development of glomerulosclerosis in salt-sensitive hypertension. We aimed to explore the effects of high-salt diet on endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) in glomerulosclerosis in Dahl salt-sensitive (Dahl-SS) rats. METHODS Eight-week-old male rats were fed high-salt (8%NaCl; DSH group) or normal salt (0.3%NaCl; DSN group) for eight weeks, with systolic blood pressure (SBP), serum creatinine, urea, 24-hour urinary protein/sodium, renal interlobar artery blood flow, and pathological examination measured. We also examined endothelial-(CD31) and fibrosis-related protein(α-SMA) expressions in glomeruli. RESULTS High-salt diet increased SBP (DSH vs. DSN, 205.2 ± 8.9 vs. 135.4 ± 7.9 mm Hg, P < 0.01), 24-hour urinary protein (132.55 ± 11.75 vs. 23.52 ± 5.94 mg/day, P < 0.05), urine sodium excretions (14.09 ± 1.49 vs. 0.47 ± 0.06 mmol/day, P < 0.05), and renal interlobar artery resistance. Glomerulosclerosis increased (26.1 ± 4.6 vs. 7.3 ± 1.6%, P < 0.05), glomerular CD31 expressions decreased while α-SMA expression increased in DSH group. Immunofluorescence staining showed that CD31 and α-SMA co-expressed in glomeruli of the DSH group. The degree of glomerulosclerosis negatively correlated with CD31 expressions (r = -0.823, P < 0.01) but positively correlated with α-SMA expressions (r = 0.936, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS We demonstrated that a high-salt diet led to glomerulosclerosis involving the EndMT process, which played an essential role in glomerulosclerosis in hypertensive Dahl-SS rats.

Abstract
Hypertension is a poorly controlled risk factor for cardiovascular disease in South Africa, particularly among patients receiving care in the public sector who are mostly from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This cross-sectional study investigated uncontrolled hypertension, treatment, and predictors among hypertensive out-patients attending primary health care facilities in Johannesburg, South Africa. The WHO STEPwise approach to the surveillance of non-communicable diseases was used to collect data, including sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, health status, and measurements for anthropometry and blood pressure along with self-reported adherence to treatment, estimated through the general medication adherence scale. Uncontrolled hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg in diagnosed patients receiving anti-hypertensive treatment. Overweight and obesity were defined as a body mass index ≥25 and ≥30 kg/m2, respectively. Logistic regression models were used to assess the predictors of uncontrolled hypertension. Four hundred (n = 400) hypertensive out-patients (mean age: 50 ± 8 years) participated in this study, with most living in poor sociodemographic environments. The prevalence rate of uncontrolled hypertension was 57%. Obesity (62% vs. 42%, p ≤ 0.0001), salt consumption (90% vs. 55%, p ≤ 0.0001), alcohol intake (42% vs. 19%, p ≤ 0.0001), a smoking habit (23% vs. 4%, p ≤ 0.0001), alternative medicine use (51% vs. 40%, p = 0.043), and comorbidities (64% vs. 36%, p ≤ 0.0001) were higher in the uncontrolled group than the controlled group, whereas the prevalence of physical activity (38% vs. 15%, p ≤ 0.0001) was high in the controlled group vs. the uncontrolled. Overall, 85% of the patients moderately adhered to treatment, only 2% exhibited high adherence, and 13% demonstrated low adherence; over half of the patients received tri-therapy treatment. The predictors of uncontrolled hypertension are a number of prescribed antihypertensive therapies [adjusted odds ration = 2.39; 95% confidence interval: 1.48-3.87], treatment adherence [0.46; 0.21-0.97], salt consumption [28.35; 7.87-102.04], physical activity [0.22; 0.13-0.37], current alcohol use [2.10; 1.22-3.61], and current cigarette smoking [4.79; 1.88-12.18]. The high prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension in this study suggests a need to optimize prescriptions, adherence to BP-lowering medications, and lifestyle modifications. The management of comorbidities such as diabetes could offer considerable benefits in controlling blood pressure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension has become increasingly prevalent in Chinese children and adolescents in recent decades, which affects growth and development of children, leads to cognitive decline and multiple target organ damage. Here, we assessed the impact of different body mass index (BMI) trajectories on the occurrence of hypertension in children and adolescents using a cohort study in Northeast China. MATERIALS AND METHODS Children and adolescents aged 5-18 years was extracted for physical examination in Fuxin City, Liaoning Province, China during the 2009-2015 period. A latent category growth mixed model (LCGMM) was used to classify BMI changes and analyze the effect of different BMI trajectories on the risk of occurrence of hypertension in these participants within 5 years. RESULTS All participates were divided into five BMI trajectories by LCGMM method: slow increasing group (n = 2616, 30.8%), overweight and obesity (OW/OB) group (n = 1141, 13.4%), normal decreasing group (n = 232, 2.7%), stable normal group (n = 4383, 51.6%), and fast-increasing group (n = 120, 1.4%). Compared with the stable normal group, the slow increasing group [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 1.610, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.304-1.989], the OW/OB group (AOR: 3.172, 95% CI: 2.500-4.023) and the fast-increasing group (AOR: 2.708, 95% CI: 1.445-5.074) all increased the risk of developing hypertension in children and adolescents. CONCLUSION The potential of developing hypertension varies among groups of children aged 5-18 with different BMI trajectories. Children and adolescents in the normal BMI range (the slow growth group) still need to be aware of the change in BMI trajectory to stop or slow down the progression of BP abnormalities.

Abstract
Hypertension is an important morbidity factor. The prognostic consequences of the white-coat effect have been studied extensively. The repercussion on the circadian rhythm of urinary water and salt excretion in the same subgroup remain, conversely, among the open topics. Postulating an impaired diurnal sodium and volume excretion we decided to investigate both, in subjects with or without a white-coat effect, in the general population. A sample of 1023 subjects, has been considered. We collected 24-h urine samples, divided in day and night, and we measured the blood pressure with an Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM). ABPM values were then compared with physician collected in-office values to assign subjects to the group with or without the white-coat effect. Concerning the circadian pattern of urinary sodium excretion, we found no significant differences between the groups. There was instead in the white-coat effect group a higher night/day ratio of urinary water excretion. The white-coat effect, has been considered a potential hypertension precursor, and its consequent handling could be prospectively relevant in hypertension prevention. The absence of repercussions on the urinary circadian sodium excretion pattern and on the potentially related risk factors in subjects with a white coat effect is reassuring. The clinical significance of the impact on the night/day ratio of water excretion needs to be further investigated.

Abstract
Protein supplements (PS) are trendy foods, especially those made from whey. In addition to providing protein, these products are a source of metals, providing essential elements (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn) and other potentially toxic elements (Al, B, Sr, V Ba, and Ni). In this study, 47 whey PS samples were analyzed for mineral elements by ICP-OES, and their dietary exposures were assessed for three consumption scenarios. Elements found in higher concentrations were K (4689.10 mg/kg) and Ca (3811.27 mg/kg). The intake of 30 g PS (average recommended amount/day) provides about 20% of the established reference value (NRI) for Cr (18.30% for men and 25.63% for women) and Mo (26.99%). In a high daily consumption scenario (100 g PS/day) and when the maximum concentrations are considered, Cr, Zn, Fe, Mo, and Mg dietary intakes of these metals exceed the daily recommended intakes and could pose a risk. The daily intake of 30, 60, and 100 g of whey PS for 25 years does not pose a health risk since the hazard index (HI) is less than one in these consumption scenarios, and the essential elements contributing most to HI are Co, followed by Mo and Cr. It is recommended to improve the information to the consumers of these new products. Furthermore, to help in the management and prevention of these potential health risks, it would be advisable to improve the regulation of these dietary supplements and their labeling.

Abstract
Hypertension (HTN) is a condition that affects nearly half of the adult population in the United States. HTN is the elevation of blood pressure (BP) 130/80 mm Hg or higher. Untreated high blood pressure may increase the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and other serious complications. BP over 180/120 mm Hg with end-organ damage is called a hypertensive emergency. Despite advancements in medicine and treatment options, the global burden of HTN has been increasing due to the advancing age of the population and an increasing prevalence of obesity. Non-pharmacological management of HTN has gained prominence worldwide due to its additional benefits and positive impact on the overall health of individuals, having almost no side effects and reducing the financial burden of medication expenses. This article has compiled studies like systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials and reviewed the role of non-pharmacological management of HTN, including lifestyle modifications like exercise, weight loss, dietary interventions like dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet, low sodium diet, limiting alcohol consumption, smoking cessation and stress management to help control blood pressure. However, non-pharmacological interventions should be initiated in an early phase, and for proper management of HTN, we may need to include both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. This article explored and integrated various studies to highlight the role of non-pharmacological interventions to manage HTN. We also examined the need for more research studies for strategies to alleviate morbidity and mortality associated with HTN.

Abstract
In aging kidneys, a decline of function resulting from extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition and organ fibrosis is regarded as "physiological." Whether a direct link between high salt intake and fibrosis in aging kidney exists autonomously from arterial hypertension is unclear. This study explores kidney intrinsic changes (inflammation, ECM derangement) induced by a high-salt diet (HSD) in a murine model lacking arterial hypertension. The contribution of cold shock Y-box binding protein (YB-1) as a key orchestrator of organ fibrosis to the observed differences is determined by comparison with a knockout strain (Ybx1ΔRosaERT+TX). Comparisons of tissue from mice fed with normal-salt diet (NSD, standard chow) or high-salt diet (HSD, 4% NaCl in chow; 1% NaCl in water) for up to 16 mo revealed that with HSD tubular cell numbers decrease and tubulointerstitial scarring [periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), Masson's trichrome, Sirius red staining] prevails. In Ybx1ΔRosaERT+TX animals tubular cell damage, a loss of cell contacts with profound tubulointerstitial alterations, and tubular cell senescence was seen. A distinct tubulointerstitial distribution of fibrinogen, collagen type VI, and tenascin-C was detected under HSD, transcriptome analyses determined patterns of matrisome regulation. Temporal increase of immune cell infiltration was seen under HSD of wild type, but not Ybx1ΔRosaERT+TX animals. In vitro Ybx1ΔRosaERT+TX bone marrow-derived macrophages exhibited a defect in polarization (IL-4/IL-13) and abrogated response to sodium chloride. Taken together, HSD promotes progressive kidney fibrosis with premature cell aging, ECM deposition, and immune cell recruitment that is exacerbated in Ybx1ΔRosaERT+TX animals.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Short-term experimental studies link excessive sodium ingestion with extracellular matrix accumulation and inflammatory cell recruitment, yet long-term data are scarce. Our findings with a high-salt diet over 16 mo in aging mice pinpoints to a decisive tipping point after 12 mo with tubular stress response, skewed matrisome transcriptome, and immune cell infiltration. Cell senescence was aggravated in knockout animals for cold shock Y-box binding protein (YB-1), suggesting a novel protective protein function.

Abstract
Rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) is thought to serve as a major vasomotor center that participates in controlling the progression of stress-induced hypertension (SIH). Circular RNAs (circRNAs) perform important functions in the regulation of diverse physiological and pathological processes. However, information concerning the functions of RVLM circRNAs on SIH remains limited. RNA sequencing was performed to profile circRNA expression in RVLMs from SIH rats, which were induced by electric foot shocks and noises. The functions of circRNA Galntl6 in reducing blood pressure (BP) and its potential molecular mechanisms on SIH were investigated via various experiments, such as Western blot and intra-RVLM microinjection. A total of 12,242 circRNA transcripts were identified, among which circRNA Galntl6 was dramatically downregulated in SIH rats. The upregulation of circRNA Galntl6 in RVLM effectively decreased the BP, sympathetic outflow, and neuronal excitability in SIH rats. Mechanistically, circRNA Galntl6 directly sponged microRNA-335 (miR-335) and restrained it to reduce oxidative stress. Reintroduction of miR-335 observably reversed the circRNA Galntl6-induced attenuation of oxidative stress. Furthermore, Lig3 can be a direct target of miR-335. MiR-335 inhibition substantially increased the expression of Lig3 and suppressed oxidative stress, and these favorable effects were blocked by Lig3 knockdown. CircRNA Galntl6 is a novel factor that impedes SIH development, and the circRNA Galntl6/miR-335/Lig3 axis represents one of the possible mechanisms. These findings demonstrated circRNA Galntl6 as a possibly useful target for the prevention of SIH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the value of CCKBRfl/fl villin-Cre mice as a mouse model of salt-sensitive hypertension (SSH). METHODS In the first part, 2-month-old CCKBRfl/fl villin-Cre mice (CKO) and control CCKBRfl/fl mice (WT) were fed with normal diet (0.4% NaCl) or high salt diet (4% NaCl), separately for 6 weeks. In the rescue study, one week of hydrochlorothiazide or saline injection were treated with the CKO mice fed high salt diet. The blood pressure, biochemical indexes, and the expression of small intestinal sodium transporters (NHE3, NKCC1, eNaC) was detected. The organ injury markers (MMP2/MMP9) and the histopathological changes of kidneys were observed, whereas the changes of duodenal sodium absorption were detected by small intestinal perfusion in vivo. RESULTS The CCKBRfl/fl villin-Cre mice with high salt intake exhibited high blood pressure, increased duodenal sodium absorption and urinary sodium excretion, and with renal injury. The protein expression of NHE3, NKCC1 and eNaC were also significant increase in the intestine of CKO-HS mice. Treatment with hydrochlorothiazide remarkably attenuated the elevated blood pressure by high salt absorption in the CCKBRfl/fl villin-Cre mice, but no significant histopathological changes were observed. CONCLUSIONS These results support a crucial role of intestinal Cckbr deficiency on SSH development and the diuretic antihypertension effect in CCKBRfl/fl villin-Cre mice. The CCKBRfl/fl villin-Cre mice with the high salt intake may serve as a stable model of salt-sensitive hypertensive induced by sodium overloading.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study assessed the iodine knowledge of pregnant and lactating women and the relationship to dietary iodine intake and iodine status. The factors influencing iodine intake were analysed. DESIGN Basic information and iodine knowledge were collected via a questionnaire. A FFQ assessed dietary iodine intake. The urinary iodine concentration (UIC) was measured using the arsenic-cerium catalytic spectrophotometric determination of iodine in urine (WS/T 107 -2016). SETTING A cross-sectional study involving pregnant and lactating women in Xinjiang, China was conducted. PARTICIPANTS A total of 1181 pregnant women and 504 lactating women were enrolled in the study. RESULTS The median UIC for pregnant and lactating women was 179·27 and 192·81 µg/l, respectively, and the dietary iodine intake was 407·16 and 356·89 µg/d, respectively. Of the pregnant and lactating women, 73·4 % and 82·5 % had medium iodine knowledge, respectively. In pregnant women, iodine knowledge and dietary iodine intake were positively correlated. High iodine knowledge and iodine education were shown to be protective factors for excessive iodine intake in pregnant women. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that the iodine nutritional status of women in Xinjiang was appropriate, and iodine knowledge was at a medium level, but there was confusion about iodine nutrition. Public education is needed to improve iodine knowledge and active iodine supplementation awareness among these populations of women.

Abstract
NEW FINDINGS What is the central question of this study? Although the involvement of reactive oxidative species in triggering hypertension has been documented, there are no data about the role of antioxidant enzymes in the heart and aorta of borderline hypertensive rats kept in baseline conditions or exposed to high salt with or without repeated stress. What is the main finding and its importance? In borderline hypertensive rats, high salt intake and stress contribute significantly to increase blood pressure and antioxidative defence in the aorta but decrease it in the heart. Elucidating the early changes that accompany elevated blood pressure could provide new therapeutical venues for prevention and treatment of the condition. ABSTRACT Hypertension and its complications are a leading cause of death in the human population. Several factors can contribute to development of hypertension, such as genetic predisposition, high salt intake and environmental stressors, underlying oxidative stress as one of its key trademarks. We studied the effects of increased salt intake and chronic stress on blood pressure parameters and the activity and protein levels of antioxidant enzymes in the heart and aorta of borderline hypertensive rats (BHRs) with genetic susceptibility to hypertension. All animals were randomized into four groups: (1) Wistar rats kept in baseline conditions; (2) BHRs kept in baseline conditions; (3) BHRs drinking 0.9% saline solution; and (4) BHRs drinking 0.9% saline solution and exposed to repeated heterotypic stress. The BHRs exhibited significantly higher blood pressure, mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (SOD2) and catalase (CAT) protein levels and lower glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities in the aorta, followed by lower CAT and GPx protein levels and higher CAT and GR activities in the heart, compared with normotensive Wistar rats. In the BHR aorta, high salt intake elevated CAT and GPx activities, and when combined with stress it increased GPx and GR activities. In BHR hearts, high salt intake provoked lower CAT activity. Adding repeated stress to salt treatment further decreased CAT activity, in addition to Cu2+ -Zn2+ superoxide dismutase (SOD1) and GR activities. The protein level of CAT was lower, whereas SOD2 and GPx increased. Overall, our results suggest that BHR hearts are better adapted to oxidative pressure, compared with the aorta, when exposed to salt and stress.

Abstract
We hypothesized whether 10% praying-mantis-egg-cake (10% PMEC) can be applied against inflammatory-erectile-dysfunction and whether it could be linked to NO-cGMP-dependent PKG signaling cascade. Ninety male albino-rats were randomly distributed into nine (n = 10) groups. Group I was given distilled water. Group II and III were pre-treated with 80 mg/kg NaCl and 75 mg/kg MSG, respectively. Group IV was pre-treated with 80 mg/kg NaCl + 75 mg/kg MSG. Group V was administered with 80 mg/kg NaCl+ 3 mg/kg Amylopidin. Group VI was given 80 mg/kg NaCl + 10% PMEC. Group VII was treated with 75 mg/kg MSG + 10% PMEC. Group VIII was treated with 80 mg/kg NaCl+ 75 mg/kg MSG + 10% PMEC. Group IX was post-treated with 10% PMEC for 14 days. Penile PDE-51, arginase, ATP hydrolytic, cholinergic, dopaminergic (MAO-A) and adenosinergic (ADA) enzymes were hyperactive on intoxication with NaCl and MSG. The erectile dysfunction caused by inflammation was linked to alteration of NO-cGMP-dependent PKG signaling cascade via up-regulation of key cytokines and chemokine (MCP-1). These lesions were prohibited by protein-rich-cake (10% PMEC). Thus, protein-rich-cake (10% PMEC) by a factor of 4 (25%) inhibited penile cytokines/MCP-1 on exposure to mixture of salt-intake through NO-cGMP-PKG dependent-NF-KB signaling cascade in rats.

Abstract
Dietary salt (NaCl) is essential to an organism's survival. However, today's diets are dominated by excessive salt intake, which significantly impacts individual and population health. High salt intake is closely linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD), especially hypertension, through a number of well-studied mechanisms. Emerging evidence indicates that salt overconsumption may also be associated with metabolic disorders. In this review, we first summarize recent updates on the mechanisms of salt-induced CVD, the effects of salt reduction and the use of salt substitution as a therapy. Next, we focus on how high salt intake can impact metabolism and energy balance, describing the mechanisms through which this occurs, including leptin resistance, the overproduction of fructose and ghrelin, insulin resistance and altered hormonal factors. A further influence on metabolism worth noting is the reported role of salt in inducing thermogenesis and increasing body temperature, leading to an increase in energy expenditure. While this result could be viewed as a positive metabolic effect because it promotes a negative energy balance to combat obesity, caution must be taken with this frame of thinking given the deleterious consequences of chronic high salt intake on cardiovascular health. Nevertheless, this review highlights the importance of salt as a noncaloric nutrient in regulating whole-body energy homeostasis. Through this review, we hope to provide a scientific framework for future studies to systematically address the metabolic impacts of dietary salt and salt replacement treatments. In addition, we hope to form a foundation for future clinical trials to explore how these salt-induced metabolic changes impact obesity development and progression, and to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms that drive these changes, with the aim of developing novel therapeutics for obesity and CVD.

Abstract
IntroductionJang is a fermented soybean paste containing salt and is traditionally used as a substitute for salt to enhance the flavor of foods in Korea. It has been speculated that regular consumption of Jang may lower the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). We hypothesized that Jang intake was associated with the risk of MetS and its components after adjusting for potential confounders, including sodium intake. The hypothesis was investigated according to gender in a large city hospital-based cohort (n = 58,701) in Korea.MethodsJang intake, calculated as the sum of the intakes of Chungkookjang, Doenjang, Doenjang soup, and Ssamjang (a mixture of Doenjang and Kochujang), was included in the semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQFFQ) administered to the cohort, and the daily Jang intake was estimated. The participants were categorized into low-Jang and high-Jang groups by 1.9 g daily Jang intake. MetS was defined according to 2005 revised United States National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) criteria modified for Asians.ResultsThe participants in the low-Jang and high-Jang groups consumed an average of 0.63 g and 4.63 g Jang daily; their total sodium intake was about 1.91 and 2.58 g/day, respectively. The participants in the high-Jang group had higher energy, fiber, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin D, and potassium intake than those in the low-Jang group. After adjusting for covariates, the participants with the highest sodium intake (≥3.31 g/day) were positively associated with MetS risk in the quintiles of men and women. Among the MetS components, waist circumference, fat mass, and hypo-high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterolemia were positively associated with sodium intake in all participants and women. Unlike the association seen with sodium intake, Jang intake (≥1.9 g/day) was inversely associated with MetS components, including waist circumference, fat mass, serum glucose concentrations, and hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia in all participants and men, after adjusting for covariates including sodium intake.DiscussionSubstituting salt for Jang in cooking may be recommended to prevent and alleviate MetS incidence, and its efficacy for MetS risk was better in men than women. The results can be applied to sodium intake in Asian countries where salt is used to promote flavor.

Abstract
Hypertension and diabetes induce vascular injury through processes that are not fully understood. Changes in extracellular vesicle (EV) composition could provide novel insights. Here, we examined the protein composition of circulating EVs from hypertensive, diabetic and healthy mice. EVs were isolated from transgenic mice overexpressing human renin in the liver (TtRhRen, hypertensive), OVE26 type 1 diabetic mice and wild-type (WT) mice. Protein content was analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. We identified 544 independent proteins, of which 408 were found in all groups, 34 were exclusive to WT, 16 were exclusive to OVE26 and 5 were exclusive to TTRhRen mice. Amongst the differentially expressed proteins, haptoglobin (HPT) was upregulated and ankyrin-1 (ANK1) was downregulated in OVE26 and TtRhRen mice compared with WT controls. Conversely, TSP4 and Co3A1 were upregulated and SAA4 was downregulated exclusively in diabetic mice; and PPN was upregulated and SPTB1 and SPTA1 were downregulated in hypertensive mice, compared to WT mice. Ingenuity pathway analysis identified enrichment in proteins associated with SNARE signaling, the complement system and NAD homeostasis in EVs from diabetic mice. Conversely, in EVs from hypertensive mice, there was enrichment in semaphroin and Rho signaling. Further analysis of these changes may improve understanding of vascular injury in hypertension and diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to estimate the prevalence of CRFs and investigate its associated social-economic factors among adults in coastal areas of Qinzhou, Guangxi. METHODS A representative sample of 1836 participants aged 20 to 70 years was included in Qinzhou, Guangxi in 2020. Data were collected by the questionnaire, anthropometric and laboratory measurements. The prevalence of CRFs, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, overweight or obesity, alcohol consumption, and smoking were calculated by standardization. The multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the independent factors associated with the presence of CRFs. RESULTS The age-standardized prevalence of hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, overweight or obesity alcohol consumption, and smoking was 42.7%, 39.5%, 0.9%, 38.5%, 18.4% and 15.7%, respectively. The prevalence of clustering of at least one and at least two cardiovascular disease risk factors were 82.2% and 45.3% in total. There were differences in the aggregation of cardiovascular risk factors among different age, education, and income levels. There appeared higher clustering of at least one and at least two CRFs among adults with lower education level, higher income level and those elderly. CONCLUSIONS Compared with other regions in China, a higher prevalence of CRFs exists among adults in Guangxi and several social-economic factors were associated with the presence of CRFs. These findings suggest that we should implement effective measures to control the CRFs, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hypertension (HTN) is the leading cause of disease and death on a global scale. Diet's sodium and potassium levels may synergistically affect blood pressure. Currently, the sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio is becoming a more reliable indicator. There has not been a systematic investigation of the dose-response relationship between dietary sodium, potassium, the Na/K ratio and the incidence of HTN based on the same study criteria. This study will conduct a thorough dose-response meta-analysis of cohort studies to estimate the effects of dietary sodium, potassium, and the Na/K ratio on the incidence of HTN to provide the most accurate reference for sodium and potassium intake. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will identify all relevant prospective and retrospective cohort studies by searching PubMed, Embase and Web of Science (from inception until December 2022). Exposures are 24 hours urinary excretions, and the outcome is the incidence of HTN. Two researchers will perform the literature selection and data extraction separately. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale will be used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. We will use both linear and non-linear regression models to investigate the dose-response relationship among different levels (≥3) of sodium, potassium, Na/K ratio intake and the incidence of HTN (OR/RR/HR). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses will be applied to assess the potential heterogeneity sources and examine the stability of the results. We will also evaluate heterogeneity across studies and publication bias. Stata V.15.0 and RevMan V.5.0 will be used for statistical analyses. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION According to the Institutional Review Board/Independent Ethics Committee of the Guang'anmen Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Science, this systematic meta-analysis protocol does not require ethical approval or informed consent. This meta-analysis will be published in a scientific journal with peer reviews. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42022331203.

Abstract
With the epidemic of risk factors such as unhealthy lifestyle, obesity and mental stress, the prevalence of hypertension continues to rise across the world. Although standardized treatment protocols simplify the selection of antihypertensive drugs and ensure therapeutic efficacy, the pathophysiological state of some patients remains, which may also lead to the development of other cardiovascular diseases. Thus, there is an urgent need to consider the pathogenesis and selection of antihypertensive drug for different type of hypertensive patients in the era of precision medicine. We proposed the REASOH classification, based on the etiology of hypertension, including renin-dependent hypertension, elderly-arteriosclerosis-based hypertension, sympathetic-active hypertension, secondary hypertension, salt-sensitive hypertension and hyperhomocysteinemia hypertension. The aim of this paper is to propose a hypothesis and provide a brief reference for the personalized treatment of hypertensive patients.

Abstract
Excessive dietary salt consumption is one of the most important risk factors for hypertension. Metabolic disorders often coexist with hypertension, and excess salt intake has been reported to underlie metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that excessive dietary salt causes metabolic syndrome in the general population. In total, 13886 subjects who participated in our medical checkup were enrolled, and salt intake was assessed using a spot urine sample. The characteristics of participants with metabolic syndrome (n = 1630) were examined at baseline, and then participants without metabolic syndrome (n = 12256) were followed up with the endpoint being the development of metabolic syndrome. The average estimated salt intake in our participants was 8.72 ± 1.93 g/day. A significant association between salt intake and metabolic syndrome was obtained from the logistic regression analysis, and salt intake increased as the number of metabolic disorders in an individual increased at baseline (P < 0.001). During the median follow-up period of 52 months, 1669 participants developed metabolic syndrome. Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated an increased risk of metabolic syndrome across quartiles of baseline salt intake (log-rank, P < 0.001). In the Cox proportional hazard regression analysis where salt intake was taken as a continuous variable, salt intake at baseline was an independent predictor of developing metabolic syndrome. These results suggest that excessive salt intake is significantly associated with the development of metabolic syndrome in the general population. Salt may play an important role in the development of metabolic disorders and hypertension.

Abstract
COVID-19 and imposed restrictions are linked with numerous health consequences, especially among endurance athletes (EA). Unfavorable changes in physical activity and nutrition may affect later sports and competition performance. The aims of this study were: (1) to assess the impact of COVID-19 infection and pandemic restrictions on the nutrition and physical activity of EAs and (2) to compare them with the results of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). In total, 49 EAs (nmale = 43, nfemale = 6, mean age = 39.9 ± 7.8 year., height = 178.4 ± 6.8 cm, weight = 76.3 ± 10.4 kg; BMI = 24.0 ± 2.6 kg·m−2) underwent pre- and post-COVID-19 CPET and fulfilled the dietary and physical activity survey. COVID-19 infection significantly deteriorated CPET performance. There was a reduction in oxygen uptake and in heart rate post-COVID-19 (both p < 0.001). Consuming processed meat and replacing meat with plant-based protein affected blood lactate concentration (p = 0.035). Fat-free mass was linked with consuming unsaturated fatty acids (p = 0.031). Adding salt to meals influenced maximal speed/power (p = 0.024) and breathing frequency (p = 0.033). Dietary and Fitness Practitioners and Medical Professionals should be aware of possible COVID-19 infection and pandemic consequences among EA. The results of this study are a helpful guideline to properly adjust the treatment, nutrition, and training of EA.

Abstract
Cardiometabolic diseases still represent a major cause of mortality worldwide. In addition to pharmacological approaches, lifestyle interventions can also be adopted for the prevention of these morbid conditions. Lifestyle changes include exercise and dietary restriction protocols, such as calorie restriction and intermittent fasting, which were shown to delay cardiovascular ageing and elicit health-promoting effects in preclinical models of cardiometabolic diseases. Beneficial effects are mediated by the restoration of multiple molecular mechanisms in heart and vessels that are compromised by metabolic stress. Exercise and dietary restriction rescue mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation. They also improve autophagy. The result of these effects is a marked improvement of vascular and heart function. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the molecular mechanisms involved in the beneficial effects of exercise and dietary restriction in models of diabetes and obesity. We also discuss clinical studies and gap in animal-to-human translation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excessive salt intake results in hypertension (HTN), which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). This review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of salt reduction interventions on systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). METHODS Studies were identified via systematic searches of the databases, including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science. All the studies examining the effectiveness of salt reduction interventions on blood pressure (BP), regardless of age, sex, and HTN status, were included in the systematic review, and eligible studies were used in the meta-analysis. A random-effect model was applied for quantitative data synthesis. RESULTS A total of 50 trials extracted from 40 articles (21 trials on nutrition education,10 on self-help materials,17 on salt substitutes, and 2 on food reformulation) were included in the systematic review. The pooled results of 44 eligible trials showed that salt substitution and nutrition education interventions had significant effects on both SBP (WMD: -7.44 mmHg, P<0.001 and WMD: -2.75 mmHg, P<0.001, respectively), and DBP (WMD: -3.77 mmHg, P<0.001 and WMD: -2.11 mmHg, P<0.001, respectively). Furthermore, using self-help materials led to a significant reduction in SBP among subjects aged 25-60 years (WMD: -2.60 mmHg, P = 0.008); it also decreased both SBP and DBP among those who were hypertensive (WMD: -3.87 mmHg, P = 0.003 and WMD: -2.91 mmHg, P<0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION Our results supported that salt substitution and nutrition education are effective nutrition strategies to lower BP. It seems that multi-component approaches could be more effective in improving BP status. However, further trials are required.

Abstract
Hypertension is a major health problem common in the elderly people. Green tea is a popular beverage recommended in folk medicine for lowering blood pressure. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in the antihypertensive effects of green tea are not fully understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the antihypertensive effects of green tea on high-salt diet-induced hypertension in old male rats. Forty old male rats were divided into five groups: control, hypertensive, and hypertensive-green tea (2, 4, and 6 g/kg). Heart rate (HR) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were measured. Cardiac and renal histology were also performed. Lipid profile, NO, angiotensin II (Ang II), and aldosterone were determined, and the expression of eNOS, ATIR and ATIIR, aldosterone receptor, and Atp1a1 were measured. Green tea could significantly decrease HR and SBP, lipid profiles, renin-angiotensin II-aldosterone system activity, and Ang II signaling in kidney tissue of hypertensive rats (p < .01). It also increased Atp1a1, Nrf2, and eNOS expression along with antioxidant enzymes activity and NO concentration (p < .05) and decreased NF-ĸB and iNOS expression and IL-1β levels in the heart, kidneys, and aorta of rats with hypertension. It can be concluded that green tea can improve salt-induced blood pressure by modulating the function of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, enhancing the synthesis of nitric oxide in the endothelium, increasing antioxidant activity and suppressing inflammation in the heart and kidney, improving the expression of the sodium-potassium pump, and reduction in serum lipids and glucose in aged male rats. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The results of this study showed that green tea could improve hypertension in elderly rats by modulating (1) the expression of the sodium-potassium pump in the heart, kidney, and aortic tissues, (2) the activity of the renin-angiotensin II-aldosterone system in kidney, (3) enhancing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in the heart, aorta, and kidneys, (4) enhancing the synthesis of nitric oxide in the endothelium, and (5) lowering lipid profile. The results of these studies show that the consumption of green tea and its products can be a good candidate for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension in the elderly. In addition, attention to its bioactive compounds can be considered by researchers as an independent therapeutic strategy or adjunctive therapy for the treatment of hypertension.
