Abstract
Current research on fitfluencers and fitspiration content is mostly quantitative and emphasizes its negative impact, overlooking its opportunities. Adolescents, who are undergoing an important and delicate developmental period, are largely understudied in research on fitfluencers and fitspiration. Combined with more than 80% of the world's adolescents not being sufficiently physically active, more research is needed on how fitfluencers may positively impact adolescents' mental and physical health. Through 20 semi-structured in-depth interviews with adolescents (aged 14-18), this study explores their lived experiences with fitfluencers and the role these play in their mental and physical health, and which opportunities fitfluencers offer to positively impact adolescents. Adolescents reported minimal negative consequences of fitfluencers and experience more motivation than demotivation. Four main opportunities-information, authenticity, actionable content, and entertainment-incited motivation to exercise and make fitfluencers' appearance and lifestyle more attainable and relatable. These results can guide future research on how fitfluencers can positively affect adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This observational longitudinal study examines whether engagement in health behaviours (general health behaviours, sleep hygiene, comfort food snacking) mediate the link between self-compassion and mental health among emerging adults. DESIGN/METHOD Participants were 332 emerging adults recruited from a large U.S. University (Mage = 19.0; SD = 1.8) who completed two electronic surveys 7-10 weeks apart (T1 and T2). The Hayes PROCESS macro model #4 was used to test whether engagement in health behaviours at T2 health mediated the association between T1 self-compassion and T2 mental health (5000 bootstrap samples). RESULTS T1 self-compassion was significantly associated with all T2 health behaviours except for comfort food snacking. T2 sleep hygiene behaviours mediated the relationship between T1 self-compassion and both T2 depression and T2 anxiety (bootstrapped 95% CIs [-.085, -.029] and [-.064, -.016], respectively), although the total effect of self-compassion on anxiety was no longer significant when accounting for T1 sleep hygiene and T1 anxiety. Overall T2 health behaviour engagement mediated the relationship between T1 self-compassion and T2 depression only (bootstrapped 95% CI [-.044, -.006]), although the mediation was non-significant after accounting for T1 overall health behaviour engagement and T1 depression. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that individuals with higher self-compassion engage more in overall health behaviours and sleep hygiene practices, and that sleep hygiene and general engagement in health behaviours help to explain the link between self-compassion and mental health symptoms over time. These findings highlight the multiple positive downstream effects of fostering self-compassion and have important implications for mental health care providers utilizing self-compassion to support health behaviour engagement in order to promote mental health.

Abstract
While body experience is a key focus of treatment in psychomotor therapy (PMT), research has largely overlooked this important topic. In this study we explored three domains of body experience-body satisfaction, body attitude, and interoceptive awareness-in individuals with mental disorders in a clinical sample receiving PMT. We expected these patients to have a more negative body experience than nonclinical controls, with PTSD, mood disorders, personality disorders, and sex negatively affecting all three domains of body experience. The study involved 235 participants aged 18-59 with various mental disorders that were referred to PMT between 2008 and 2017 at a mental health center in the Netherlands. They completed questionnaires on all three of the body experience domains of interest. One sample t-tests revealed that patients had significantly greater negative body satisfaction and body attitude than nonclinical control samples obtained from the literature, with no significant difference in interoceptive awareness. Regression analyses within the patient sample revealed that female patients and patients with mood disorders or PTSD, displayed more negative body satisfaction than patients with other mental disorders. Additionally, female patients and patients with mood disorders displayed more negative body attitude. Although the total patient group and controls had comparable interoceptive awareness, only PTSD had significantly lower interoceptive awareness. Age and personality disorders did not predict differences on any domain of body experience. This research demonstrates that body experience is disturbed in patients with mental disorders who received PMT, and that there are disorder-specific disturbances on domains of body experience domains.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Depression is highly prevalent during chronic kidney disease (CKD) with studies suggesting prevalence rates ranging from approximately one-quarter to half of CKD patients. CKD and depression have a bidirectional relationship, each disorder aggravating the other, leading to more complex and challenging patient management. Depression during CKD is multifactorial and is associated with increased risk of adverse events and hospitalization. METHODS We conducted a narrative review of experimental and observational studies in animals and humans, as well as meta-analyses, to explore specific mechanisms of depression in CKD and its treatment. RESULTS In depression the gut-brain axis is central. CKD leads to an accumulation of gut-derived uremic toxins. One key factor is the accumulation of tryptophan-derived uremic toxins like kynurenines or indoxyl sulfate, whose serum concentration increases progressively with the stage of CKD (up to 100-fold in stage 5), and which plays an important role in depression mechanisms, by activating aryl hydrocarbon receptor, decreasing brain concentrations of serotonin by approximately 40 %, increasing brain inflammation, via activation of microglia and astrocytes and release of TNFα, IL-6 and NO. Randomized controlled studies found limited or no benefits of antidepressants for depressive symptoms in CKD and hemodialysis patients. CONCLUSION Chronic inflammation, in relation to uremic toxin accumulation during CKD, seems to be a complex but important mechanism for treatment resistance in depression. Future research should consider inhibitors of uremic toxins inhibitors and anti-inflammatory molecules as potential therapeutic agents, to improve the prognosis of depression in CKD patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE A randomized-controlled trial to investigate the efficacy of a 6-month self-paced aquatic exercise intervention on physical function, symptoms and psychosocial measures in individuals with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). METHODS Thirty-two individuals diagnosed with ME/CFS (55.0 ± 13.9 yr) were randomized into an intervention group (INT, n = 17) or control group (CON, n = 15) for a 6-month trial of two 20-min sessions per week of self-paced aquatic movements and stretches. Pre- and post-intervention outcomes included physiological measures, 6-min walk test, hand-grip strength, Sit-to-Stand, Apley's shoulder test, Sit-Reach test, perceived exertion, fatigue (FACIT), anxiety/depression (HADS) questionnaires, and tiredness and pain scores (VAS 0-10 scale). RESULTS The INT group significantly increased walk test distance (13.7%, P < 0.001), Sit-to-Stand scores (33.7%, P < 0.001) and peak expiratory pulmonary flow (12.9%, P = 0.028) post-intervention. Fatigue (29.5%, P = 0.005), depression (21.7%, P = 0.010), combined anxiety/depression scores (16.9%, P = 0.047) and resting diastolic blood pressure (4.8%, P < 0.001) also significantly improved for the INT group. Sit-Reach scores were significantly lower for the INT group compared to CON post-intervention (- 4.0 ± 10.4 vs + 4.3 ± 10.7 cm, P = 0.034). There were no adverse events or worsening of symptoms during the trial. CONCLUSIONS Self-paced, low-moderate-intensity aquatic exercise improved walk distance, lower limb strength, fatigue, depression and peak expiratory flow without worsening ME/CFS symptoms. This mode of low-intensity physical activity may confer mental health and physical benefits provided the activity is self-paced and within patient energy limits. Abstract
Objective To summarize the characteristics, estimate the efficacy of multicomponent structured exercise (MSE) intervention on older adults' depression, and investigate its potential moderators. Methods MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science and Embase databases were searched from January 1, 2000 to June 1, 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that included MSE intervention with aerobic, resistance and balance components targeting older adults, and reported depression as an outcome were selected. Random-effects meta-analyses were used to calculate effect sizes from the standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). Meta-regression was conducted to identify the potential moderators. Results Data were extracted from 19 studies (22 comparisons) with 1763 older adults. MSE showed a significant intervention effect on buffering older adults' depression (SMD, -0.49; 95 % CI, -0.84 to -0.14) but with considerable heterogeneity (I2 = 92 %) and low certainty of evidence. In subgroup analyses, MSE with unhealthy status participants, intervention duration of 12-24 weeks, over 2 times/week intervention frequency, equipment used and ≥ 80 % retention rate showed significant effects on improvement of older adults' depression. Intervention frequency (β, -0.83; 95 % CI, -1.50 to -0.16) and retention rate (β, 0.80; 95 % CI, 0.05 to 1.56) were identified as moderators. Conclusion MSE significantly improved older adults' depression. The findings highlighted the importance of intervention frequency and retention rate in enhancing MSE effectiveness. More high quality RCTs are required to explore and optimize the intervention strategies and dosages of MSE to extend the application in the prevention and treatment of geriatric depression.

Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a burdensome condition frequently associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders. Although the exact molecular signaling pathways have not yet been fully defined, the compromised integrity of functional brain networks in regions such as the prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex has been linked to persistent symptoms, including depression, fatigue, and sleep disorders. Understanding how TBI affects neural physiology enables the development of effective interventions. One such strategy may be physical exercise, which promotes neural repair and behavioral rehabilitation after TBI. However, there are caveats to consider when interpreting the effects of physical exercise on TBI-induced mental health issues. This review will highlight the main findings from the literature investigating how different physical exercise protocols affect the progression of TBI-induced depression, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. Furthermore, we aim to explore potential neurobiological pathways that explain how physical exercise influences depression, fatigue, and sleep following TBI.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The present study aimed to explore the effect of different levels of physical activity on depression, instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), and activities of daily living (ADLs) among older adults over the age of 60. METHODS Data on older adults' health were obtained from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) conducted in 2021. A questionnaire was used to survey older adults aged 60 years and older in 28 regions of China. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to evaluate physical activity, and participants were categorized into groups based on their physical activity levels: vigorous (5.38%), moderate (16.33%), light (74.58%), and no physical activity (control group). The CES-D9 scale was used to assess the level of depression, and both the activities of daily living (ADLs) scale and the instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) scale were used to evaluate self-care ability. Propensity score matching was used to determine the intensity of physical activity that affected depression, instrumental daily activity ability (IADLs), and activities of daily living (ADLs) among the participants. RESULTS The participation rates of vigorous, moderate, and light physical activities among the older adult Chinese participants were 5.38%, 16.33%, and 74.58%, respectively. Propensity score matching (PSM) showed moderate and light physical activity decreased depression by -0.367 and - 0.409 units, respectively. Moderate and light physical activity increased instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) by 0.165 and 0.607 units, respectively. Light physical activity increased the level of activities of daily living (ADLs) by 0.265 units. CONCLUSION Moderate and light physical activity in older adults alleviates depression and improves instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), and light physical activity improves the level of activities of daily living (ADLs).

Abstract
Epidemiological evidence suggests that exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is associated with lipid profile levels, but with inconsistent conclusions from different studies. The aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of the relationship between PFAS exposure and lipid profile levels based on population-based epidemiological studies. Embase, PubMed, Ovid database, The Cochrane Library and Web of Science database were used to search appropriate studies (before September 6, 2022) on the correlation between PFAS exposure and lipid profile levels. β value, odd ratio (OR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted from studies. In this study, we found that higher low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels were associated with exposure to perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) (β value=0.13, 95 % CIs: 0.02, 0.24) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) (β value=0.13, 95 % CIs: 0.04, 0.21). PFOA, PFOS and PFNA exposure were significantly related to the higher levels of total cholesterol (TC) with the pooled effect estimates of 0.08 (95 % CI: 0.02, 0.14), 0.13 (95 % CI: 0.05, 0.21) and 0.14 (95 % CI: 0.08, 0.20) respectively. In sum, our results identified that PFOA, PFOS, PFNA and PFUnDA were the most important risk factors for abnormal levels of lipid profile, indicating that we should prevent cerebrovascular disease by reducing and controlling PFAS exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe affective disorder that is clearly linked to stroke and diabetes. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of stroke and diabetes in the association between the cardiometabolic index (CMI) and MDD. METHODS This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 8312 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2005-2018). MDD was diagnosed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9; score > 10). Associations were evaluated using multivariate logistic/linear regression, stratified interaction analyses, restricted cubic spline (RCS) models for nonlinearity, and bootstrap mediation testing. RESULTS There was a robust positive correlation between the incidence of MDD [OR = 1.36 (95 % CI: 1.21-1.51)] and the PHQ-9 score [β = 0.55 (95 % CI: 0.37-0.73)], with a one-unit increase in CMI. The participants in CMIQ4 had a 64 % greater risk of stroke than did the participants in CMIQ1 [OR = 1.64 (95 % CI: 1.17-2.29)]. The forest plot shows that the results remained stable under the grouping of stroke, diabetes, race, gender, and age. Moreover, stroke and diabetes both exhibited partial mediating roles, with indirect effects accounting for 4.03 % and 5.37 % of the total effect, respectively. Through RCS analysis, a nonlinear correlation was observed between CMI and MDD and between CMI and diabetes. There is a linear relationship between stroke and MDD, and maintaining CMI levels below 0.518 may mitigate the risk of MDD. CONCLUSION Stroke and diabetes partially mediated the associations between CMI and MDD. However, additional prospective studies are warranted to scrutinize the impact of CMI on MDD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Various exercise modalities have been demonstrated to be effective in alleviating anxiety and depression among individuals with cancer. However, it remains unclear which specific exercise intervention is the optimal choice. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the impact of different exercise intervention types on anxiety and depression in individuals with cancer. METHODS Eligible randomized controlled trials were identified through searches of PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCOHost, with the search period up to December 2024. Two researchers independently conducted the literature screening, data extraction, and assessment. Statistical analyses and visualizations were performed using Stata 15.0 software and RevMan5.4 software. RESULTS A total of 26 randomized controlled trials (involving 2118 individuals with cancer) examining three types of exercise interventions were included. Compared to usual care, mind-body exercise (SMD = -0.58, 95 % CI (-0.99, -0.17)), followed by resistance training (SMD = -0.52, 95 % CI (-1.12, 0.09)), and aerobic exercise (SMD = -0.51, 95 % CI (-0.89, -0.13)) significantly decreased depression levels among individuals with cancer. Additionally, resistance training (SMD = -0.66, 95 % CI (-1.59, 0.27)), followed by aerobic exercise (SMD = -0.59, 95 % CI (-1.08, -0.10)), and mind-body exercise (SMD = -0.48, 95 % CI (-0.96, 0.00)) significantly decreased anxiety levels among individuals with cancer compared to usual care. CONCLUSION The findings of this network meta-analysis suggest that mind-body exercise, resistance training, and aerobic exercise are all effective interventions for reducing anxiety and depression among individuals with cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical inactivity in adolescents is a major public health issue. Schools are important settings for physical activity interventions. The WISH Study was a peer-led, school-based walking intervention that aimed to increase physical activity levels of adolescent girls. This study uses the RE-AIM Framework to present the process evaluation of the WISH Study with a focus on factors that affected participation, motivation, and enjoyment of the intervention. METHODS Pupils (n589 12-14 years) were recruited from 18 schools in the border region of Ireland and Northern Ireland. In intervention schools (n9), older pupils (15-18 years) were trained as walk leaders and led pupils (12-14 years) in brisk walks (10-15 min) during the school day, across the school year (2021-22). Questionnaires to measure self-efficacy for walking and physical activity, health-related quality of life and reasons for engaging in physical activity were administered throughout the intervention. At the end of the intervention focus groups were held with pupils, and interviews conducted with teachers and walk leaders. Attendance at walks was monitored by walk leaders. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively, and qualitative analysis was undertaken using thematic analysis. Themes were reported under RE-AIM indicators (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance). RESULTS Pupils in the intervention schools (n286) were representative of adolescent girls in Northern Ireland and Ireland, in terms of their activity level. At baseline, 15% of these pupils met the recommended physical activity guidelines of 60 min moderate-vigorous physical activity per day, as measured by accelerometers. The total number of walks reported per school ranged from 2 to 104 across intervention schools. One quarter of pupils (n74, 26%) never attended a walk and 15% (n23) of walk leaders did not lead a walk. Pupils and walk leaders self-reported improvements in their physical health, mental well-being, and social relationships, and walk leaders reported gaining transferrable skills. Implementation was aided by school support in some schools, although barriers such as COVID-19, lack of time, harsh weather, inadequate facilities for indoor walks, and walk leader availability, were identified. Staff engagement was a key driver for the maintenance of walks. CONCLUSIONS Despite a promising feasibility study and a comprehensive walk leader training programme, the extent to which the intervention was adopted and implemented varied, suggesting future school-based physical activity interventions need to consider individual school contexts to ensure intervention fidelity. Abstract
BACKGROUND Deficits in working memory (WM) are common in patients with Major Depression Disorder (MDD). Previous research mainly in healthy adults indicated that physical exercise training may improve cognitive functions by stimulating neuronal plasticity particularly in hippocampal structures. Thus, the goal of this functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) study was to examine alterations in neuronal activity during a WM task and to investigate changes in brain volume and functioning following a physical exercise training in patients with MDD with a specific focus on hippocampal structures. METHODS 86 (39 female) MDD outpatients (average age 37.3), diagnosed by clinical psychologists, were randomly assigned to one of three groups for a 12-week intervention: High intensity exercise training (HEX), low intensity exercise training (LEX) or waiting list control group (WL). An n-back task (with WM loads of 0, 1, 2, and 3) during fMRI was conducted before and after interventions/waiting period. RESULTS Both exercise groups showed better performance and shorter reaction times at higher WM loads after 12-weeks of physical exercise training. Specifically in the HEX, we found an improvement in physical fitness and an increase in neural activation in the left hippocampus as compared to the WL following the exercise training. Training-related structural volume changes in gray matter or hippocampus were not detected. CONCLUSIONS Our results partly support the hypothesis that physical exercise training positively affects WM functions by improving neuronal plasticity in hippocampal regions. Exercise training seems to be a promising intervention to improve deficient WM performance in patients with MDD. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review aimed to 1) update the existing evidence on the antidepressant effects of aerobic exercise (AE) in youth. 2) Investigate any potential dose‒response relationships between AE interventions and depressive symptom reduction. 3) Provide evidence-based insights to inform future research and clinical depression treatment. METHODS Employing the PRISMA and PERSiST guidelines, a comprehensive search across nine databases (Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, SportDiscus, CINAHL, Medline, Embase, and CNKI) yielded a total of 782 relevant studies. Following rigorous selection criteria, 26 eligible studies (comprising 22 different samples) were included in the analysis, featuring a combined sample size of 1308 participants. The meta-analysis was conducted via R. RESULTS AE notably decreased depressive symptoms among youth [g = -0.92; 95% CI (-1.16, -0.69); p < 0.01]. Significant dose‒response relationships were observed across age groups [β = -0.06; 95% CI (-0.12, 0.00), p < 0.05], the intensity [β = -0.03; 95% CI (-0.06, 0.00); p < 0.05], and the duration ^ 2 [β = 0.001, 95% CI (0.001, 0.002), p < 0.05] of the AE intervention. CONCLUSIONS Aerobic exercise interventions can effectively alleviate depressive symptoms in youth. A moderate-intensity AE program, lasting 25-40 min and conducted three times a week for 9-15 weeks, can increase alleviation of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the association between Affective Exercise Experiences (AEEs), environmental factors, and adherence to a structured public health exercise initiative. METHODS A prospective experimental design was employed in a primary care setting within green parks in a community in Northern Italy. Community-dwelling individuals who participated in a 15-week outdoor exercise program were recruited. Participants engaged in 43 low-to moderate-intensity outdoor exercise sessions, held three times a week from May to July 2022, with each session lasting 60 min. A total of 68 participants (mean age: 64.6 ± 8.6 years) completed the questionnaires. RESULTS A causal analysis revealed a small but significant positive effect of AEEs on adherence, with higher AEE scores associated with an increased likelihood of attending exercise sessions. The predictive model identified a combination of AEE scores, environmental temperature, distance from the exercise site, and weekday as significant predictors of adherence. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the importance of AEEs, as well as environmental and demographic factors, in predicting adherence to structured exercise programs. The findings suggest that fostering positive affective experiences related to exercise could enhance adherence, particularly among older adults.

Abstract
The occurrence of public health emergency in China often makes nurses more susceptible to anxiety. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of anxiety among Chinese nurses during the public health emergency and explore the association between family function and anxiety and its underlying mechanisms. Family care index questionnaire, Connor-Davidson Resilience scale, physical activity rating scale and 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale were employed to measure family function, resilience, physical activity and anxiety among 779 Chinese nurses during public health emergency. The prevalence of anxiety among nurses during public health emergency was 29.9%. Resilience partially mediated the association of anxiety with family function. Physical activity moderated the direct and indirect effects of family function on anxiety. The direct effect became insignificant when the standard scores of physical activity were 0.629 and over. In contrast, the indirect effect of family function on anxiety through resilience was stronger when the levels of physical activity increased. The present study suggested for nurses with low levels of physical activity, intervention enhancing family function should be designed to prevent anxiety. For those with higher levels of physical activity, programs aimed at strengthening family function and supporting resilience should be developed to manage anxiety.

Abstract
Introduction The high prevalence of depression among adolescents underlines the need for further research into effective treatment options. Previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of physical activity in reducing depressive symptoms. Recently, studies on surf therapy, as an innovative approach of physical activity, have shown promising results regarding the reduction of depressive symptoms in adults and the improvement of general mental health problems in adolescents. However, research in this area is still limited. The aim of the current study was to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of a group therapy program that combines physical activity, including surf therapy, with cognitive behavioral therapy for treating depression among adolescents. Methods Thirty-two outpatients (28 female, four male) aged 13-18 years with a mean age of 15.58 years (SD = 1.52) and a primary diagnosis of depression were included. They participated in a 3-month group therapy program in groups of eight adolescents. The dropout rate was calculated as an aspect of feasibility. To evaluate effectiveness, depressive symptoms were assessed using the "Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised" (CDRS-R) as the primary outcome measure at pre-program, post-program, and at 3-month follow-up. In addition, questionnaires assessing depressive symptoms ["Beck Depression Inventory II" (BDI-II)], emotion regulation strategies ["Fragebogen zur Erhebung der Emotionsregulation bei Kindern und Jugendlichen" (FEEL-KJ)] and self-esteem ["Selbstwertinventar für Kinder und Jugendliche" [SEKJ)] were administered as secondary outcome measures. Results Results showed a low dropout rate of 9.38% (n = 3). Depressive symptoms, assessed by the CDRS-R, were significantly reduced over time, with a large effect size. Symptom reductions were maintained at the 3-month follow-up. Discussion Study results suggest that the group therapy program is feasible and can reduce depressive symptoms. Further research that includes control groups is needed. As a clinical implication, novel treatment forms which integrate elements of physical activity, should be considered as a treatment option for depressed adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between concussion history and depressive symptoms after adjusting for physical activity, substance use, and illicit drug use. METHODS We analysed data from the Adolescent Behaviour and Experiences Survey, a nationally representative survey of adolescents in the USA. Our independent variables were history of concussion in the 12 months preceding survey completion; self-reported weekly physical activity (days per week with >60 min of physical activity, 0-7 scale); substance use over the past 30 days (yes vs no) and illicit drug use throughout lifetime (yes vs no). Our dependent variable was participant-reported sadness/hopelessness over the past 12 months (yes vs no). RESULTS Among 7499 adolescents (9th-12th grade, 50.4% female), reporting one or more concussions over the past year was not associated with the odds of depressive symptoms (OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 0.93 to 1.37, p=0.21). Each additional day of physical activity per week was associated with a lower odds of depressive symptoms (OR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.89 to 0.94; p<0.0001). Illicit drug use (OR ever vs never: 2.48; 95% CI: 1.96 to 3.13; p<0.0001) and substance use (OR yes vs no: 2.77; 95% CI: 2.34 to 3.29; p<0.001) were associated with a higher odds of depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Adjusting for physical activity, substance use and illicit drug use, concussion was not significantly associated with depressive symptoms. This novel discovery informs clinicians as they counsel adolescents with concussion; future research should examine physical activity and avoidance of substance/illicit drug use as postinjury recommendations in an effort to lower the risk of depressive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the dose and pattern of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) to prevent depression. We aimed to assess the prospective association of dose and pattern of accelerometer-derived MVPA with the risk of diagnosed depression. METHODS We included 74,715 adults aged 40-69 years from the UK Biobank cohort who were free of severe disease at baseline and participated in accelerometer measurements (mean age 55.2 years [SD 7.8]; 58% women). MVPA at baseline was derived through 1-week wrist-worn accelerometry. Diagnosed depression was defined by hospitalization with ICD-10 codes F32.0-F32.A. Restricted cubic splines and Cox regression determined the prospective association of dose and pattern of MVPA with the risk of incident depression. RESULTS Over a median 7.9-year follow-up, there were 3,089 (4.1%) incident cases of depression. Higher doses of MVPA were curvilinearly associated with lower depression risk, with the largest minute-per-minute added benefits occurring between 5 (HR 0.99 [95% CI 0.96-0.99]) and 280 (HR 0.67 [95% CI 0.60-0.74]) minutes per week (reference: 0 MVPA minutes). CONCLUSION Regardless of pattern, higher doses of MVPA were associated with lower depression risk in a curvilinear manner, with the greatest incremental benefit per minute occurring during the first 4-5 h per week. Optimal benefits occurred around 15 h/week.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity (PA) intentions may predict future PA engagement, such that when intentions for PA are strong, an individual may be more likely to engage in PA compared with when intentions for PA are weak. However, intentions do not always translate into behavior, a phenomenon known as the intention-behavior gap. Individual differences in exercise preference (predisposition for high-intensity exercise) and tolerance (ability to continue exercising at higher intensity) may explain this gap. This study examined whether exercise preference and tolerance moderate the within-subject association between PA intention and next-day moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) using ecological momentary assessment and accelerometry. METHODS Exercise preference and tolerance were assessed at baseline using a validated questionnaire. A 14-day smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment protocol captured PA intentions each evening, and next-day MVPA was assessed via accelerometry. Multilevel linear regression models (days [level 1] nested within-people [level 2]) assessed within-subject associations between PA intention and next-day MVPA, along with cross-level interaction effects of exercise preference and tolerance. RESULTS Data from 62 US adults (mean age = 39 y, SD = 4.29 y) were analyzed. A negative within-subject main effect of PA intention on next-day MVPA was observed (β = -0.20, P < .001), while exercise preference positively moderated this relationship (β = 0.04, P < .001). Exercise tolerance was not a significant moderator. CONCLUSIONS Exercise preference may influence the intention-behavior gap, suggesting that those who prefer high-intensity exercise are more likely to translate PA intentions into next-day MVPA.

Abstract
Consistent evidence suggests that exercise leads to improvements in subjective sleep quality and also objective sleep metrics in non-psychiatric adult populations. However, the degree to which exercise provides sleep benefits for adults with psychiatric disorders is less known, despite the potential benefits given that sleep disturbance is prevalent in these populations. In this narrative review, we synthesize results of randomized controlled trials examining the influence of aerobic and/or resistance exercise interventions on sleep outcomes in adult psychiatric populations. We specifically focus on populations with elevated symptoms or diagnoses of depression, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress disorder. A systematic search through June 2024 yielded 26 relevant trials. Overall, most trials reported improvement of subjective sleep quality after aerobic and/or resistance exercise programs in samples with depression. Similar effects were observed for posttraumatic stress; however, larger trials are needed. Further research is needed to examine the impact of exercise on sleep in anxiety populations as only one trial with mixed results was identified. Results were more equivocal for the subpopulation of adult women with perinatal or postpartum depression, demonstrating the importance of understanding exercise effects on sleep in specific subpopulations. Few studies examined objective sleep outcomes, impact of acute exercise on next day sleep, or the interplay between exercise, sleep, and psychiatric symptom changes, all important areas of future research. Other implications and future directions are discussed, including potential moderators and mechanisms of action that warrant further study to better understand how exercise interventions may optimally target sleep in psychiatric populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have shown a strong link between sarcopenia and depression, and low muscle mass (LMM) is an important component in the diagnosis of sarcopenia; however, there have been no studies on the relationship between LMM and depressive symptoms in the Chinese elderly population. To estimate the potential relationship between LMM and depressive symptoms among older adults, a cross-sectional analysis was conducted utilizing data from the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS). METHOD The study sample comprised 11,711 individuals aged 65 years or older (mean age 83.0 ± 10.9) from the CLHLS database in 2018. We used the corrected appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) prediction formula to assess muscle mass and the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D-10) to assess depressive symptoms. A multivariate logistic regression model and restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves were employed to investigate the association between LMM and depressive symptoms. RESULTS The study findings revealed a 1.16-fold higher risk of depressive symptoms in the LMM group compared to the control group (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.16, 95% confidence intervals [95% CI]: 1.05-1.29, p < 0.001). Furthermore, for every one-point decrease in LMM score below 7.87, the risk of depressive symptoms increased by 8%, with statistical significance. However, when the LMM score was greater than or equal to 7.87, the decrease in the LMM score did not significantly increase the risk of depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION Our study suggests LMM is a risk factor for depressive symptoms in the elderly Chinese population, and within a certain range, the risk of depressive symptoms increases as the LMM score decreases. Physical exercise may be an effective strategy to maintain optimal muscle mass and help the mental health of the elderly.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize the existing literature and evaluate the efficacy of combined resistance and aerobic training in alleviating depressive symptoms among individuals with depression. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on study region, age, depression severity, intervention duration, intervention frequency, and whether the intervention was supervised or unsupervised. METHODS Five databases were thoroughly examined from database establishment until August 20, 2024, to find randomized controlled trials that investigated resistance combined aerobic training impact on depression. RESULTS Finally, 27 eligible studies were included, involving a total of 2,342 patients with depression. The outcomes indicated that resistance combined aerobic training notably improved signs of depression in these patients (SMD=-1.39, 95%CI=-1.80 to -0.96, p = 0.000). Subgroup analysis based on study area, age, severity of depressive symptoms, and exercise prescription revealed that resistance combined aerobic training had a particularly significant effect on middle-aged and elderly patients with depression, as well as on those with moderate depression. Additionally, moderate period (9-24 weeks), moderate frequency (3-4 times per week), a total weekly duration of more than 180 min and supervised training displayed the best results. CONCLUSION Resistance combined aerobic training serves as an efficient approach to relieve depression-related symptoms, particularly in middle-aged and elderly patients with depression and those with moderate depression. Moderate training intensity, duration, frequency, and total weekly duration offer the greatest benefit.

Abstract
Depression is a common mental disorder characterized by a high prevalence and significant adverse effects, making the searching for effective interventions an urgent priority. In recent years, physical activity (PA) has increasingly been recognized as a standard adjunctive treatment for mental disorders owing to its low cost, easy application, and high efficiency. Epidemiological data shows positive preventive and therapeutic effects of PA on mental illnesses such as depression. This article systematically describes the prophylactic and therapeutic effects of PA on depression and its biological basis. A comprehensive literature analysis reveals that PA significantly improves depressive symptoms by upregulating the expression of "exerkines" such as irisin, adiponectin, and BDNF to positively impacting neuropsychiatric conditions. In particular, lactate could also play a critical role in the ameliorating effects of PA on depression due to the findings about protein lactylation as a novel protein post-transcriptional modification. The literature also suggests that in terms of brain structure, PA may improve hippocampal volume, basal ganglia (neostriatum, caudate-crustal nucleus) and PFC density in patients with MDD. In summary, this study elucidates the multifaceted positive effects of PA on depression and its potential biological mechanisms with a particular emphasis on the roles of various exerkines. Future research may further investigate the effects of different types, intensities, and durations of PA on depression, as well as how to better integrate PA interventions into existing treatment strategies to achieve optimal outcomes in mental health interventions.

Abstract
Despite the positive effects of physical activity, people with mental illness often remain inactive. Exercise recommendations are inconsistent and challenging to follow.This study assessed exercise behavior and the need for programs during and after inpatient treatment to develop clinical recommendations.Patients from the psychiatric clinic at the University of Augsburg were recruited via flyer/QR-Code.A total of 47 patients participated in this survey. Over 70% exercise regularly, and over 70% are interested in peer-sports-groups with low-threshold conditions (e.g. no prior registration required). Strength training and moderate intensity training were favored over endurance sports.Our findings complement the World Health Organization's exercise recommendations. Strength training programs and accessible options may promote physical activity in this population.

Abstract
Background: Schizophrenia is classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the top ten diseases contributing to the global medical economic burden. Some studies have pointed out that exercise is effective for physical and mental health, as well as cognition. We hypothesized that participation in pickleball intervention would lead to improved self-esteem and reduced psychiatric symptoms in schizophrenia patients. Method: We recruited participants with schizophrenia from a long-term care facility and a regional hospital, dividing them into two groups based on the institutions. The experimental group underwent a nine-week pickleball exercise intervention, with sessions three times a week, each lasting 90 min, and a Dink ball test was conducted weekly. Questionnaires on self-esteem and the short-form health survey were collected both before and after the intervention. Result: This trial included 30 patients, divided equally into the experimental group (n = 15) and the control group (n = 15). After the nine-week pickleball intervention, there were no significant differences between the experimental and control groups in the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) (p = 0.153) or the Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS-5) (p = 0.289). However, the Dink test scores in the experimental group showed significant improvements in physical activity capabilities and attention over time, with average hit counts increasing from 5.3 ± 1.5 to 10.7 ± 2.3 (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Although the pickleball intervention did not yield significant differences in self-esteem and symptom measures between groups, the improvements observed in physical performance and attention in the experimental group suggest that exercise remains a feasible complementary approach for managing schizophrenia symptoms. Further research with larger sample sizes is recommended.

Abstract
Introduction Fibromyalgia (FM) is a widespread chronic pain condition with prevalence increasing in older adults. Older adults living with FM experience longer pain symptom durations that can negatively impact their quality of life. Affect and neuroinflammation are potential factors that can exacerbate pain symptoms. Exercise is a recommended intervention to manage pain symptoms; however, adherence limitations persist. Drawing on the Biopsychosocial Framework of Chronic Pain, this scoping review explores how exercise impacts factors related to neuroinflammation and affect, and how these factors contribute to exercise adherence in older adults living with FM. Methods We conducted a scoping search of articles related to exercise and older adults living with FM published before 2024. The extracted study characteristics include publication type, study design, affect outcomes, neuroinflammation outcomes, exercise type, exercise adherence, and sample demographic information. Results We have provided an overview of the relationship between affect and neuroinflammation in studies including older adults living with FM and highlight the impact of exercise on affect and neuroinflammation in older adults living with FM. A conceptual framework is provided illustrating the reciprocal relationship between exercise, affective changes, neuroinflammation, and exercise adherence. Discussion Our results suggest that exercise may improve affect, while limited evidence suggests that aerobic and resistance exercise improve neuroinflammation. Finally, implications for importance and future directions in the context of potential biological factors impacted are provided.

Abstract
Current State of Research on Surf Therapy and its Possible Application as an Intervention for Adolescent Depression Abstract: Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders experienced in adolescence. Because of its high prevalence rates and significant impact on affected individuals, alternative and complementary interventions are being explored. In recent years, physical activity has received increasing attention as a form of treatment. Current reviews highlight the potential benefits of this therapeutic approach in reducing depressive symptoms. Surf therapy is an innovative approach in the field of physical activity that additionally utilizes the therapeutic effects of the ocean. It combines surfing with structured exercises to promote mental and physical well-being. Internationally, surf therapy is already being applied to children and adolescents dealing with mental health problems as well as to adults diagnosed with conditions such as depression and posttraumatic stress disorder. Initial studies suggest positive effects of surf therapy in terms of symptom reduction, although the research is limited and requires further investigation. We present our pilot study investigating the feasibility and effectiveness of surf therapy for the treatment of adolescent depression in Germany.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This umbrella review aims to consolidate the evidence concerning the influence of exercise on depressive symptoms and cognitive performance in adults diagnosed with depression. METHODS An umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses investigating the effect of exercise on depression and cognition was performed. Databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase) were searched from inception until February 2024 for reviews of randomized controlled trials. Overlap within included reviews was assessed using the corrected covered area method (CCA). A random effects model was used to calculate overall pooled effect size with sub-analyses. RESULTS This study included 27 reviews, encompassing 190 experiments. In patients with depression, compared to the control group, exercise demonstrated a moderate effect size in reducing depressive symptoms (SMD = -0.67; SE = 0.04; p < 0.0001), with a Number Needed to Treat (NNT) of 2.78. When analyses were limited to data from studies with a low risk of bias, the effect on depressive symptoms was smaller (SMD = -0.38; SE = 0.07; p < 0.0001; NNT = 4.72). Exercise had a small effect on cognitive functions (SMD = 0.12; SE = 0.03; p < 0.0001), with an NNT for cognitive function treatment of 14.79. CONCLUSIONS All forms of exercise benefit patients with depression. However, for optimal intervention outcomes, it is essential to customize the intensity and type of exercise according to the specific characteristics of the patient's depressive symptoms and cognitive functions. It is recommended to implement a phased treatment approach for patients based on the intensity of exercise.

Abstract
Exercise can effectively prevent and treat depression and anxiety, with gut microbiota playing a crucial role in this process. Studies have shown that exercise can influence the diversity and composition of gut microbiota, which in turn affects depression through immune, endocrine, and neural pathways in the gut-brain axis. The effectiveness of exercise varies based on its type, intensity, and duration, largely due to the different changes in gut microbiota. This article summarizes the possible mechanisms by which exercise affects gut microbiota and how gut microbiota influences depression. Additionally, we reviewed literature on the effects of exercise on depression at different intensities, types, and durations to provide a reference for future exercise-based therapies for depression.

Abstract
Background Prevalence of depression is increasing in young people. Behaviour change interventions providing benefits equal to or greater than talking therapies or pharmacological alternatives are needed. Exercise could be beneficial for young people with depression, but we lack robust trials of its effectiveness. Objective To test whether an exercise intervention targeting young people with depression is feasible, including recruitment and retention of young people, recruitment and training of exercise professionals and intervention delivery. Design Three-arm cluster feasibility randomised controlled trial with embedded process evaluation and health economic data collection. Setting Local community venues in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Norfolk. Participants Young people aged 13-17 years experiencing mild to moderate low mood or depression (indicated by scoring 17-36 on the Child Depression Inventory version 2) identified by mental health services, schools or self-referral. Interventions Participants were randomised to one of three groups: high-intensity exercise, low-intensity exercise or a social activity control. Group sessions ran twice-weekly for 12 weeks delivered by registered exercise professionals, supported by mental health support workers. Main outcome measures Referral, recruitment and retention rates; attendance at group sessions; adherence to and ability to reach intensity during exercise sessions; proportions of missing data, and adverse events measured at baseline and at 3 and 6 months; resource use; and reach and representativeness. Results Of 321 referrals to the study, 173 were assessed for eligibility, and of the target sample size of 81, 15 were recruited and 14 were randomised (one withdrew). The retention rate was 71.4% and attendance at intervention sessions was > 67%; data completeness was > 80% for baseline assessments. Follow-up completion rate at 14 weeks was > 80% for most outcomes, with 50% for accelerometer data in the low-intensity group. Trial processes and the intervention were acceptable to young people. Barriers to and facilitators of intervention delivery were identified. Limitations Findings highlighted challenges around recruitment, delivery of exercise interventions and informed ways of addressing barriers to recruitment for future studies. The study was conducted between October 2020 and August 2022 and consequently the COVID-19 pandemic had a disruptive impact on implementation. Conclusions A large randomised trial of the effectiveness of the intervention is not feasible using the current study design, but issues relating to recruitment could be addressed with further work. Future work Developing appropriate recruitment strategies via triage services, general practitioner practices, schools and social media and early engagement with the local Clinical Research Network to support recruitment to the study would address the significant shortfalls identified. Young people who are deemed unsuitable for mental health services should be followed up to be offered participation in such interventions. Collaborations between the NHS services and sports delivery partners should consider in-person contact with young people rather than remote consultations. Recruiting through general practitioner practices is effective and relatively inexpensive. The role of community engagement (socialmedia, public health agencies, community groups) needs to be further explored. Strong public and patient involvement and engagement via young people advisory groups is important to ensure that research is relevant to young people. Abstract
New combinations or alternative therapies for major depressive disorder (MDD) are necessary. Intradermal acupuncture (IA) shows promise but requires further investigation regarding its efficacy, safety, and mechanisms. Conducted across 3 centers from November 2022 to January 2024, our randomized controlled trial included 120 participants with moderate to severe MDD, divided into the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), SSRIs plus sham IA (SSRIs + SIA), and SSRIs plus active IA (SSRIs + AIA) groups. Acupuncture groups received 10 sessions over 6 weeks at Shenmen (HT7), Neiguan (PC6), Sanyinjiao (SP6) and Taichong (LR3) bilaterally, followed by a 4-week follow-up. The primary outcome was changes in Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 (HAMD-17) scores at week 6. Furthermore, healthy controls (HCs) and MDD patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans for functional connectivity (FC) analysis. After 6 weeks of treatment, the SSRIs + AIA group showed a greater reduction in HAMD-17 score than the SSRIs + SIA group (MD, -4.9 [CI, -7.6 to -2.2], P < 0.001) and SSRIs group (MD, -5.1 [CI, -7.8 to -2.3], P < 0.001). No serious adverse events occurred. SSRIs + AIA resulted in lower incidences of palpitations (vs.SSRIs + SIA: OR, 0.1% [CI, 0.0-1.0%]; vs. SSRIs: OR, 0.1% [CI, 0.0-0.7%]; P < 0.05), somnolence (vs.SSRIs + SIA: OR, 0.1% [CI, 0.0-0.9%]; vs.SSRIs: OR, 0.1% [CI, 0.0-0.7%]; P < 0.05), and nausea (vs.SSRIs + SIA: OR, 0.1% [CI, 0.0-1.0%]; vs. SSRIs: OR, 0.1% [CI, 0.0-0.9%]; P < 0.05). MDD patients showed abnormal FCs, and IA enhanced FCs between striatum and frontal_inf_tri, and striatum and cerebellum in the MRI study. Overall, IA as adjunctive therapy provides clinical efficacy and safety for MDD, and it may exert antidepressant effects by modulating striatal FCs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether exercise intervention is associated with reducing depressive symptoms in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. METHODS Medline (PubMed), Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) from inception to February 28, 2024. Randomized controlled trials comparing exercise intervention with usual care or stretching sessions for depression symptoms. Independent data extraction was conducted, and the quality of studies was assessed. A meta-analysis was carried out by using random effects models to calculate standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI) between groups. RESULTS 23 trials with 1561 CKD patients were identified. Exercise interventions are associated with a significant reduction in depression symptoms among CKD patients, with a moderate average SMD of -0.726 (95% CI: -1.056, -0.396; t=-4.57; p < 0.001). Significant heterogeneity was observed (tau2 = 0.408 [95%CI: 0.227, 1.179], I2 = 79.9% [95% CI: 70.5%, 86.3%]). The funnel plot shows potential publication bias. Subgroup analyses showed that the beneficial effects of exercise on depression remained constant across all subgroups. The evidence is deemed as 'very low' certainty. CONCLUSIONS Our systematic review and meta-analysis showed that exercise intervention was associated with significantly alleviating depression symptoms (certainty of evidence: very low). While the very low certainty of the evidence highlights a need for further research. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42021248450.

Abstract
Physical activity program interventions often lack sensitivity to the needs of older immigrant adults. The objective of this systematic realist review is to explain how, why, for whom, and under which circumstances community group-based physical activity programs work for immigrant older adults. The initial program theory was developed using prior research, team expertise, social cognitive theory, and knowledge user consultations. The program theory was tested and refined via a systematic review of the literature. Database searches were conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Sports Medicine and Education Index, and SPORTDiscus. A total of 22 sources of evidence met inclusion criteria and included intervention studies, systematic reviews, and a discussion paper. Intervention studies were appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. The final program theory constituted eight context-mechanism-outcome configurations that highlight the importance of facilitator characteristics, access to safe spaces, group dynamics, and social support. A limitation was the small number and variable quality of included evidence. Physical activity programs that target immigrant older adults must strengthen physical and psychological safety and maximize opportunities for role modeling and socialization. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Both aerobic exercise and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) improve depression, but perceptions of their credibility and efficacy are underexplored. These perceptions can contribute to treatment seeking and outcome. A previous online sample ranging in age and education rated a combined treatment higher than individual components and underestimated their efficacy. The current study is a replication exclusively focused on college students. PARTICIPANTS Undergraduates (N = 260) participated during the 2021-2022 school year. METHODS Students reported impressions of each treatment's credibility, efficacy, difficulty, and recovery rate. RESULTS Students viewed combined therapy as potentially better, but also more difficult, and underestimated recovery rates, replicating previous work. Their efficacy ratings significantly underestimated both meta-analytic estimates and the previous sample's perceptions. CONCLUSIONS Consistent underestimation of treatment effectiveness suggests that realistic education could prove especially beneficial. Students might be more willing than the broader population to accept exercise as a treatment or adjunct for depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is an increasing illness worldwide that severely diminishes the quality of life. In this study we sought to elucidate the association of the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8) metrics with the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among depression participants and further quantify the related theoretical reduction of long-term CVD burden. METHODS We included 20,832 participants with depression from the UK Biobank. LE8, including diet quality, physical activity, nicotine exposure, sleep duration, body mass index, lipids, glucose, and blood pressure, was calculated at baseline and categorized into low, medium, and high levels. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for major cardiovascular events (MACE) were calculated using Cox models. We further quantified the population-attributable fraction (PAF) for CVD. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 12.0 years, 658 MACE were recorded. After multi-variable adjustment, compared with participants with low LE8, people with high LE8 had a decreased risk of MACE (HR, 0.32; 95% CI, 0.22-0.47), non-fatal MACE (HR, 0.39, 0.26-0.61), myocardial infarction (HR, 0.23, 0.12-0.44), and ischemic stroke (HR, 0.52, 0.27-0.99). Overall 50.7% (95% CI, 34.5%-66.9%) of MACE and 48.0% (95% CI, 29.5%-66.4%) of nonfatal MACE were attributable to the low and medium adherence to LE8 at the 5-year follow-up, respectively. Suboptimal control of blood pressure ranked as the top contributor to all types of CVD in individuals with depression. CONCLUSIONS Optimal adherence to LE8 was associated with lower burden of CVD in those with depression. Adopting a comprehensive lifestyle intervention might help further reduce CVD burden in those with mental disorders.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating condition that is associated with changes in the default-mode network (DMN). Commonly reported features include alterations in gray matter volume (GMV), cortical thickness (CoT), and gyrification. A comprehensive examination of these variables using ultra-high field strength MRI and machine learning methods may lead to novel insights into the pathophysiology of depression and help develop a more personalized therapy. Cerebral images were obtained from 41 patients with confirmed MDD and 41 healthy controls, matched for age and gender, using a 7-T-MRI. DMN parcellation followed the Schaefer 600 Atlas. Based on the results of a mixed-model repeated measures analysis, a support vector machine (SVM) calculation followed by leave-one-out cross-validation determined the predictive ability of structural features for the presence of MDD. A consecutive permutation procedure identified which areas contributed to the classification results. Correlating changes in those areas with BDI-II and AMDP scores added an explanatory aspect to this study. CoT did not delineate relevant changes in the mixed model and was excluded from further analysis. The SVM achieved a good prediction accuracy of 0.76 using gyrification data. GMV was not a viable predictor for disease presence, however, it correlated in the left parahippocampal gyrus with disease severity as measured by the BDI-II. Structural data of the DMN may therefore contain the necessary information to predict the presence of MDD. However, there may be inherent challenges with predicting disease course or treatment response due to high GMV variance and the static character of gyrification. Further improvements in data acquisition and analysis may help to overcome these difficulties.

Abstract
Aim To evaluate the longitudinal association of sedentary behavior, light and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) participation with depressive symptoms and whether their possible association changed depending on the pandemic phase. Methods This longitudinal study conducted secondary analysis from the Spanish cohort of the Remote Assessment of Disease and Relapse - Major Depressive Disorder (RADAR-MDD) study. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8). Sedentary behavior and physical activity were estimated via wrist-worn devices. Linear mixed models evaluated the longitudinal associations of sedentary behavior and physical activity (light and moderate-to-vigorous intensities) with depressive symptoms. Results In total, 95 participants (67.5% women, 53.0 [±10.5] years of age on average) were monitored pre-COVID-19 and included in the analyses. Pre-COVID-19, 73.7% of participants presented depression, and, on average, participated in 13.2 (±1.08) hours/day of sedentary behavior, 2.42 (±0.90) hours/day of light physical activity and 23.6 (±19.80) minutes/day of MVPA. Considering all the observations (from November 2019 to October 2020), an additional hour/day of sedentary behavior was longitudinally associated with higher depressive symptoms [βstd = 0.06, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.10 to 0.47], whereas an additional hour/day in light physical activity was associated with lower depressive symptoms (βstd = -0.06, 95% CI -0.59 to -0.15). Time in MVPA was not associated with depressive symptomatology. The association of sedentary behavior and light physical activity with depressive symptoms was significant only during pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 relaxation periods, whereas during the strictest periods of the pandemic with regards to the restrictions (lockdown and de-escalation), the association was not observed. Conclusion Sedentary behavior and light physical activity were longitudinally associated with depressive symptoms in participants with a history of MDD. The incorporation of light physical activity should be stimulated in adults with a history of MDD. Neither sedentary behavior nor light physical activity were associated with depressive symptoms during the most restrictive COVID-19 phases, whereas sedentary behavior (positively) and light physical activity (negatively) were associated with depressive symptoms in persons with MDD before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a complex, heterogeneous condition affecting millions worldwide. Computational neuropsychiatry offers potential breakthroughs through the mechanistic modeling of this disorder. Using the Kolmogorov theory (KT) of consciousness, we developed a foundational model where algorithmic agents interact with the world to maximize an Objective Function evaluating affective valence. Depression, defined in this context by a state of persistently low valence, may arise from various factors-including inaccurate world models (cognitive biases), a dysfunctional Objective Function (anhedonia, anxiety), deficient planning (executive deficits), or unfavorable environments. Integrating algorithmic, dynamical systems, and neurobiological concepts, we map the agent model to brain circuits and functional networks, framing potential etiological routes and linking with depression biotypes. Finally, we explore how brain stimulation, psychotherapy, and plasticity-enhancing compounds such as psychedelics can synergistically repair neural circuits and optimize therapies using personalized computational models.

Abstract
Few multination-based studies have examined the longitudinal association between PA (physical activity) and persistence of supra-threshold depressive symptoms (SDS). This cohort study aimed to assess the influence of PA on persistence of SDS. Data were obtained from the Population Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). The cohort was composed of individuals with SDS at baseline. Depressive symptoms were ascertained using the EURO-D scale, with a value over 4 indicatives of SDS. The study included 6,631 participants with SDS. After adjusting for nine different covariates at baseline and the changes of PA level during the follow-up period, compared to very low PA, moderately high (OR=0.82; 95 %CI: 0.69-0.98; p = 0.03), and high (OR=0.80; 95 %CI: 0.66-0.95; p = 0.01) PA levels were associated with significantly reduced persistence of depressive symptoms. In a propensity score analysis, matching low and high PA level for baseline scores of EURO-D, people with high PA levels reported a lower EURO-D of 0.53 points (p < 0.0001). In conclusion, among adults with depression, higher levels of PA were associated with a reduced persistence of depression. These real-world data complement evidence on efficacy of exercise as a treatment for depression and can inform clinical guidelines.

Abstract
Data from the National Survey of Children's Health 2016-2020 was used to examine the association between physical activity and anxiety and depression among autistic youth, non-autistic youth with ADHD, and non-autistic non-ADHD youth. There was a significant negative association between physical activity and anxiety among all groups. Reduction in anxiety or depression associated with greater physical activity was at least as large or larger among autistic or nonautistic youth with ADHD than among non-autistic non-ADHD youth. Unfortunately, even autistic youth who were physically active 4 to 7 days a week showed very high rates of anxiety (54.5%) and depression (23.1%). Very high levels of dual diagnosis of anxiety and depression in autistic youth and youth with ADHD also emerged. Findings highlight a need to determine the cause-and-effect relationships among physical activity, anxiety, and depression across groups and to prioritize mental health screenings and support for autistic youth and youth with ADHD.

Abstract
Exercise is known to reduce depression and anxiety symptoms. Although the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying this effect remain unknown, exercise-induced increases in neurotransmitter release and hippocampal neurogenesis have been hypothesized to play key roles. One neurotransmitter that has been implicated in both antidepressant-like effects and the regulation of hippocampal neurogenesis is serotonin (5-HT). Complete loss of function of the brain 5-HT synthesis enzyme (tryptophan hydroxylase 2, Tph2) has been reported to prevent exercise-induced increases in neurogenesis and to block a subset of antidepressant-like responses to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), but whether partial loss of Tph2 function blocks the behavioral and neurogenic effects of exercise has not been established. This study used four tests that are predictive of antidepressant efficacy to determine the impact of 5-HT deficiency on responses to exercise in male and female mice. Our results demonstrate that low 5-HT impairs the behavioral effects of exercise in females in the forced swim and novelty-suppressed feeding tests. However, genetic reductions in 5-HT synthesis did not significantly impact exercise-induced alterations in cellular proliferation or immature neuron production in the hippocampus in either sex. These findings highlight the importance of brain 5-HT in mediating behavioral responses to exercise and suggest that individual differences in brain 5-HT synthesis could influence sensitivity to the mental health benefits of exercise. Furthermore, the observed disconnect between neurogenic and behavioral responses to exercise suggests that increased neurogenesis is unlikely to be the primary driver of the behavioral effects of exercise observed here.

Abstract
Objective To summarize the general situation and focal points of research on the physical activity and mental health of older people over the past 15 years and provide references for future research. Methods Literature published between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2023, was retrieved from the Web of Science core database. A bibliometric visualization analysis of countries/regions, institutions, authors, keywords, and references was conducted using CiteSpace6.1.R6. Results A total of 4,329 articles were included, and the annual number of articles published over the past 15 years showed an upward trend. The articles were primarily from 65 countries/regions and 626 institutions. The most represented country and institution were the USA and the University of Pittsburgh, respectively. Among the authors identified, Schuch and Callow were the most influential. The research focuses on four areas: the psychological effects of physical activity in older people; physical activity intervention approaches to the mental health of older people; physical activity and mental health assessment questionnaires; and the impact of physical activity on multidimensional aging. Research frontiers involve emerging topics such as the assessment and intervention of mental health in older people and the relationship between their physical activity and cognitive function. Conclusion This study conducted a comprehensive, objective, and visual analysis of publications and revealed the status of relevant studies, trending topics, and trends concerning the physical activity and mental health of older people from 2009 to 2023. We hope that this work will help researchers identify new perspectives on potential collaborators, important topics, and research frontiers.

Abstract
The development of multimodality has led to increased research on its use to improve students' English language competency. However, no recent review has analyzed multimodality in English language learning in higher education. This systematic review examines 34 research articles published from 2013 to 2024. The primary focus of the study is to explore the application of multimodal pedagogies in higher education, the methods and materials used to assist learners in acquiring English language skills, the English language skills acquired through the usage of multimodality, and the main results of using multiple modes. This systematic review employs the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) standards. It adopts a thorough search strategy across electronic databases, which include Web of Science and Scopus. We found (1) the implementation of multimodality contributes to learners' English language proficiency in English for academic purposes (EAP) and English for specific purposes (ESP) education; (2) there is a predominance of digital multimodality and nonverbal communication use in the higher education classroom, for example, gesture, kinesics, spatial position, facial expression, and gaze the use of the 3D (dimensional) environment, virtual reality (VR); (3) there is an advantage of a multimodal approach in improving higher education learners' vocabulary, reading, speaking, and writing skills and a positive connection between the implementation of multimodality and the development of learners' communicative ability. This systematic review highlights existing research gaps and outlines potential avenues for future investigation aimed at conceptualizing and assessing learners' skills through multimodal approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide, and treatments could be more effective. Identifying methods to improve treatment success has the potential to reduce disease burden dramatically. Preparing or "priming" someone to respond more effectively to psychotherapy (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy [CBT]) by preceding sessions with aerobic exercise, a powerful neurobiological activator, could enhance the success of the subsequently performed therapy. However, the success of this priming approach for increasing engagement of working mechanisms of psychotherapy (e.g., increased working alliance and behavioral activation) has yet to be formally tested. METHODS The CBT + trial will be a parallel-arm randomized controlled trial that will recruit 40 adult participants with DSM-5 diagnosed depression (verified with clinical interview) via referrals, mass emails, local flyers, and social media posts. Participants will be randomized to an ActiveCBT or CalmCBT condition. The ActiveCBT group will receive an 8-week CBT intervention primed with 30 min of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (cycling on a stationary bike at a 13 rating of perceived exertion). The CalmCBT group will receive the same 8-week CBT intervention while resting for 30 min before CBT (i.e., cycling vs no cycling is the only difference). The primary outcome measures will be mean working alliance (assessed with the client version of the Working Alliance Inventory-Short Revised) and mean behavioral activation (self-reported Behavioral Activation for Depression Scale) recorded at each of the 8 therapy sessions. Secondary outcomes include evaluation of state anhedonia and serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor before the active/calm conditions, between the condition and therapy, and after the therapy. Additional exploratory analyses will evaluate group differences in algorithm-generated ratings of therapist-participant interactions via the Lyssn platform. DISCUSSION The novel approach of priming CBT with moderate-intensity aerobic exercise evaluated in a randomized controlled trial (CBT + trial) has the potential to demonstrate the usefulness of exercise as an augmentation strategy that improves working mechanisms of therapy and overall treatment outcomes for adults with depression. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review aims to determine whether aerobic exercise is beneficial in treating depression in adults in general. METHODS Review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses related to RCTs. PubMed, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, and Cochrane databases of systematic reviews were searched extensively between September 2009 and September 2023. An extensive search was conducted using MeSH terms, including ''depression'', ''depressive disorder'', ''depressive symptoms'', ''exercise'', ''aerobic exercise'', ''aerobic training'', ''walking'', ''running'', ''jogging'', ''bicycling'', ''physical activity'', ''adult (limiters 18-65 years)'', ''meta-analyses'' and ''systematic reviews''. RESULT In the initial search of the titles and abstracts of reviews, 2345 articles were found. 46 full-text reviews were selected for carefully scrutinized. A total of seven reviews were included in the analysis, and two of them were meta-analyses, which included 42 RCTs. The results of four reviews evaluated the effectiveness of aerobic exercise on depression. Moreover, two reviews examined the efficacy of aerobic exercise as an add-on intervention for depression treatment, one of which was a subgroup analysis. According to two reviews, aerobic exercise improved CRF in people with depression and affected people with MDD from a neurobiological standpoint. CONCLUSION This umbrella review systematically evaluated the efficacy of aerobic exercise in treating adult depression, revealing substantial evidence that supports its potential to alleviate depressive symptoms. The positive synthesis of findings advocates for integrating aerobic exercise as a non-pharmacological treatment option. Nevertheless, additional research is essential to confirm these benefits and optimize exercise protocols for depression management.
