Source, fate, transport and modelling of selected emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment: Current status and future perspectives

Enhanced removal of PPCPs and antibiotic resistance genes in saline wastewater using a bioelectrochemical-constructed wetland system

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are insufficiently degraded in saline wastewater treatment processes and are found at high concentrations and detection frequencies in aquatic environments. In this study, the wetland plant Thalia dealbata was selected using a screening plant experiment to ensure good salt tolerance and high efficiency in removing PPCPs. An electric integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland (E-VFCW) was developed to improve the removal of PPCPs and reduce the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The removal efficiency of ofloxacin, enrofloxacin, and diclofenac in the system with anaerobic cathodic and aerobic anodic chambers is higher than that of the control system (41.84 ± 2.88%, 47.29 ± 3.01%, 53.29 ± 2.54%) by approximately 20.31%, 16.04%, and 35.25%. The removal efficiency of ibuprofen in the system with the aerobic anodic and anaerobic cathodic chamber was 28.51% higher than that of the control system (72.41 ± 3.06%) and promotes the reduction of ARGs. Electrical stimulation can increase the activity of plant enzymes, increasing their adaptability to stress caused by PPCPs, and PPCPs are transferred to plants. Species related to PPCPs biodegradation (Geobacter, Lactococcus, Hydrogenophaga, and Nitrospira) were enriched in the anodic and cathodic chambers of the system. This study provides an essential reference for the removal of PPCPs in saline-constructed wetlands.

The effects of estuarine outflows on coastal marine ecosystems in New South Wales, Australia

In the state of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, recent legislative action has focused on identifying key threats to the marine estate. We used a systematic literature review to evaluate the knowledge status of the effects of estuarine outflows on coastal marine ecosystems, within the environmental, hydrological, and physicochemical context of NSW waters. Results focussed on studies that measured outcomes for marine biota (n = 56). Trace elements and organochlorines were the most frequently studied contaminant types, with reported biological concentrations often below guideline values but detected at the highest concentrations adjacent to urban sources. Few studies measured the impacts of legacy and emerging contaminants to animal health, or the flow on effects to marine ecosystems in NSW. Our review highlights key biological and geographical data gaps in estuarine outflow research in NSW, particularly of the impact on ecosystems of exported carbon and nutrients to the oligotrophic waters of NSW.

Characterizing PFASs in aquatic ecosystems with 3D hydrodynamic and water quality models

Understanding how per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) enter aquatic ecosystems is challenging due to the complex interplay of physical, chemical, and biological processes, as well as the influence of hydraulic and hydrological factors and pollution sources at the catchment scale. The spatiotemporal dynamics of PFASs across various media remain largely unknown. Here we show the fate and transport mechanisms of PFASs by integrating monitoring data from an estuarine reservoir in Singapore into a detailed 3D model. This model incorporates hydrological, hydrodynamic, and water quality processes to quantify the distributions of total PFASs, including the major components perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), across water, particulate matter, and sediments within the reservoir. Our results, validated against four years of field measurements with most relative average deviations below 40%, demonstrate that this integrated approach effectively characterizes the occurrence, sources, sinks, and trends of PFASs. The majority of PFASs are found in the dissolved phase (>95%), followed by fractions sorbed to organic particles like detritus (1.0-3.5%) and phytoplankton (1-2%). We also assess the potential risks in both the water column and sediments of the reservoir. The risk quotients for PFOS and PFOA are <0.32 and < 0.00016, respectively, indicating an acceptable risk level for PFASs in this water body. The reservoir also exhibits substantial buffering capacity, even with a tenfold increase in external loading, particularly in managing the risks associated with PFOA compared to PFOS. This study not only enhances our understanding of the mechanisms influencing the fate and transport of surfactant contaminants but also establishes a framework for future research to explore how dominant environmental factors and processes can mitigate emerging contaminants in aquatic ecosystems.

Developing an Approach for Integrating Chemical Analysis and Transcriptional Changes to Assess Contaminants in Water, Sediment, and Fish

Pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments pose threats to aquatic organisms because of their continuous release and potential accumulation. Monitoring methods for these contaminants are inadequate, with targeted analyses falling short in assessing water quality's impact on biota. The present study advocates for integrated strategies combining suspect and targeted chemical analyses with molecular biomarker approaches to better understand the risks posed by complex chemical mixtures to nontarget organisms. The research aimed to integrate chemical analysis and transcriptome changes in fathead minnows to prioritize contaminants, assess their effects, and apply this strategy in Wascana Creek, Canada. Analysis revealed higher pharmaceutical concentrations downstream of a wastewater-treatment plant, with clozapine being the most abundant in fathead minnows, showing notable bioavailability from water and sediment sources. Considering the importance of bioaccumulation factor and biota-sediment accumulation factor in risk assessment, these coefficients were calculated based on field data collected during spring, summer, and fall seasons in 2021. Bioaccumulation was classified as very bioaccumulative with values >5000 L kg-1, suggesting the ability of pharmaceuticals to accumulate in aquatic organisms. The study highlighted the intricate relationship between nutrient availability, water quality, and key pathways affected by pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and rubber components. Prioritization of these chemicals was done through suspect analysis, supported by identifying perturbed pathways (specifically signaling and cellular processes) using transcriptomic analysis in exposed fish. This strategy not only aids in environmental risk assessment but also serves as a practical model for other watersheds, streamlining risk-assessment processes to identify environmental hazards and work toward reducing risks from contaminants of emerging concern. Nationwide profiling and source identification of organophosphate esters in Korean surface waters using target, suspect, and non-target HRMS analysis

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are emerging contaminants that serve as alternatives to regulated substances in aquatic environments. A nationwide large-scale assessment for OPEs, including point sources, remains insufficient. To address this issue, we aimed to investigate OPEs occurrence and novel OPEs via comprehensive target, suspect and non-target analysis. Among the 11 target OPEs, 10 were detected at sampling sites distributed evenly nationwide. The highest mean concentrations were measured for tris-(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP). The multivariate statistical analysis revealed that TBOEP and TCIPP are essential components for assessing total OPEs pollution. The systematic risk assessment results evaluated the overall risk contribution of TBOEP and the significant risk impact of 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate. Promising suspect and non-target analysis enabled frequent detection and identification of 6 antioxidant transformation products (TPs), as well as the tentative identification of 14 OPEs and TPs, including 3 di-OPEs. Based on sampling site classification, we confirmed that major OPEs are significantly discharged near point sources. We believe that this is the first attempt to assess the nationwide risk and potential sources of OPEs in Korean surface waters, providing insights that could support further prioritization and regulation efforts.

Pollution characteristics and risk assessment of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in surface water of national (freshwater) aquatic germplasm resource reserves in Guangdong Province

The distribution, composition, and risk assessment of 8 EDCs in the surface water of 14 national aquatic germplasm resource reserves (freshwater) were investigated during dry and wet seasons. Bisphenol A (BPA), nonylphenol (NP), and octylphenol (OP) were the main contributors of the 8 EDCs. The concentrations of phenolic pollutants in surface water during the dry season were higher than those in the wet season. However, no significant seasonal differences were found among the steroid hormones. According to the evaluation of estrogenic activity (EEQ > 1.0), E2 and EE2 were the main contributors to estrogenic activity. EDC mixtures posed a higher risk to crustaceans and fish (RQ > 1.0) and a moderate to high risk to algae (RQ > 0.1). Fish were the most sensitive aquatic organisms. In the study areas, EE2, E1, BPA, NP, and E2 had a higher risk than the other three compounds and should be controlled as a priority.

Degradation of emerging contaminants in synthetic hydrolyzed urine by UV/peracetic acid: Free radical chemistry, and toxicity analysis

The ecological impact of emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments has raised concerns, particularly with regards to urine as a significant source of such contaminants in wastewater. The current investigation used the UV/Peracetic Acid (UV/PAA) processes, an innovative advanced oxidation technology, to effectively separate two emerging pollutants from urine at its source, namely, ciprofloxacin (CIP) and bisphenol A(BPA). The research findings demonstrate that the presence of the majority of characteristic ions has minimal impact on the degradation of ECs. However, in synthetic hydrolyzed urine, only NH4+ inhibits the degradation of two types of ECs, with a more pronounced effect observed on CIP degradation compared to BPA.The impact of halogen ions, specifically Cl- and I-, on the degradation of CIP in synthetic hydrolyzed urine was a complex phenomenon. When these two halogen ions are present individually, the generation of reactive halogen species (RHS) within the system enhances the degradation of CIP. However, when both types of ions coexist, the formation of diatomic radical species partially inhibits degradation. In terms of BPA degradation, while the production of reactive chlorine species (RCS) to some extent hinders the reaction rate, the generation of reactive iodine species (RIS) promotes the overall process. CIP undergoes fragmentation of the piperazine and quinoline rings, decarboxylation, defluorination reactions, as well as substitution reactions, leading to the formation of products with simplified structures. The degradation of BPA occurs gradually through hydroxyl and halogen substitution as well as isopropyl cleavage. The preliminary toxicity analysis confirmed that the presence of halogen ions in urine resulted in the formation of halogenated products in two types of ECs, albeit with an overall reduction in toxicity. The UV/PAA processes was considered to be an effective and relatively safe approach for the separation of ECs in urine.

Degradation of β-lactam antibiotics by Fe(III)/HSO3- system and their quantitative structure-activity relationship

β-lactam antibiotics, extensively used worldwide, pose significant risks to human health and ecological safety due to their accumulation in the environment. Recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of transition metal-activated sulfite systems, like Fe(Ⅲ)/HSO3-, in removing PPCPs from water. However, research on their capability to degrade β-lactam antibiotics remains sparse. This paper evaluates the degradation of 14 types of β-lactam antibiotics in Fe(Ⅲ)/HSO3- system and establishes a QSAR model correlating molecular descriptors with degradation rates using the MLR method. Using cefazolin as a case study, this research predicts degradation pathways through NPA charge and Fukui function analysis, corroborated by UPLC-MS product analysis. The investigation further explores the influence of variables such as HSO3- dosage, substrate concentration, Fe(Ⅲ) dosage, initial pH and the presence of common seen water matrices including humic acid and bicarbonate on the degradation efficiency. Optimal conditions for cefazolin degradation in Fe(Ⅲ)/HSO3- system were determined to be 93.3 μM HSO3-, 8.12 μM Fe(Ⅲ) and an initial pH of 3.61, under which the interaction of Fe(Ⅲ) dosage with initial pH was found to significantly affect the degradation efficiency. This study not only provides a novel degradation approach for β-lactam antibiotics but also expands the theoretical application horizon of the Fe(Ⅲ)/HSO3- system.

Novel visible-light activated photocatalytic ultrafiltration membrane for simultaneous separation and degradation of emerging contaminants

Emerging contaminants (ECs) in secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have received increasing attention due to their adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Herein, visible-light responsive photocatalyst TM (TiO2 @NH2-MIL-101(Fe)) and resultant photocatalytic ultrafiltration (PUF, PVDF/TM) membrane were prepared to remove 32 typical compounds of antibiotics, 296 compounds of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and their corresponding bacterial hosts. The construction of heterojunction photocatalyst promoted the electron transfer from NH2-MIL-101(Fe) to TiO2 and the formation of N-TiO2, enhancing visible-light (λ ≥ 420 nm) photocatalytic activity. With highly-hydrophilic surface and delicately-regulated pore structure, the initial water permeance of optimal PUF membrane significantly increased to 3912.2 L/m2/h at 1.0 bar. Meanwhile, membrane retention (via adsorption, electrostatic interaction, and steric hindrance) was improved due to the narrowed pore size, highly-negative surface charge and abundant functional groups. Additionally, hydroxyl radical (•OH) was the dominant active reactive oxygen species (ROS) for ECs degradation, and the narrowed pore structure could serve as microreactors to increase ROS concentration and reduce migration distance. Consequently, the removal efficiencies of antibiotics, bacteria and ARGs were 86.5 %, 91.4 % and 91.8 %, respectively. Overall, this novel visible-light-activated PUF membrane expands membrane application, and has great potential in ECs treatment.

Occurrence and potential risks of pharmaceutical contamination in global Estuaries: A critical review and analysis

Input of pollutants to estuaries is one of the major threats to marine biodiversity and fishery resources, and pharmaceuticals are one of the most important contaminants of emerging concern in aquatic ecosystems. To synthesize pharmaceutical pollution levels in estuaries over the past 20 years from a global perspective, this review identified 3229 individual environmental occurrence data for 239 pharmaceuticals across 91 global estuaries distributed in 26 countries. The highest cumulative weighted average concentration level (WACL) of all detected pharmaceuticals in estuarine water was observed in Africa (145,461.86 ng/L), with 30 pharmaceuticals reported. North America (24,316.39 ng/L) was ranked second in terms of WACL, followed by South America (20,784.13 ng/L), Asia (5958.38 ng/L), Europe (4691.23 ng/L), and Oceania (2916.32 ng/L). Carbamazepine, diclofenac, and paracetamol were detected in all continents. A total of 41 functional categories of pharmaceuticals were identified, and analgesics, antibiotics, and stimulants were amongst the most ubiquitous groups in estuaries worldwide. Although many pharmaceuticals were observed to present lower than or equal to moderate ecological risk, 34 pharmaceuticals were identified with high or very high ecological risks in at least one continent. Pharmaceutical pollution in estuaries was positively correlated with regional unemployment and poverty ratios, but negatively correlated with life expectancy and GDP per capita. There are some limitations that may affect this synthesis, such as comparability of the sampling and pretreatment methodology, differences in the target pharmaceuticals for monitoring, and potentially limited number and diversity of estuaries covered, which prompt us to standardize methods for monitoring these pharmaceutical contaminants in future global studies.

Drivers of change behind the spatial distribution and fate of typical trace organic pollutants in fresh waste leachate across China

There have been growing concerns regarding the health and environmental impacts of trace organic pollutants (TOPs). However, fresh leachate from municipal solid waste (MSW) has been overlooked as a potential reservoir of TOPs. Therefore, we investigated 90 legacy and emerging TOPs in fresh leachate from 14 provinces and municipalities in China. Additionally, the fate and final discharge impacts of TOPs in 14 leachate treatment systems were analyzed. The results revealed that the detection rate of 90 TOPs was over 50 % in all samples. Notably, polychlorinated biphenyls, banned for 40 years, were frequently detected in fresh leachate. The concentration of pseudo-persistent TOPs (105-107 ng/L) is significantly higher than that of persistent TOPs (102-104 ng/L). Spatial distribution patterns of TOPs in fresh leachate suggest that economy, population, climate, and policies impact TOPs discharge from MSW. For example, economically developed and densely populated areas displayed higher TOPs concentrations, whereas warmer climates facilitate TOPs leaching from MSW. We confirmed that waste classification policies were a key driver of the decline in multiple TOPs in leachate. Mass balance analysis shows that the final effluent and sludge from current dominant leachate treatment systems contain refractory TOPs, especially perfluoroalkyl acids, which must be prioritized for control. This paper was the first comprehensive investigation of multiple TOPs in fresh leachate at a large geographic scale. The factors affecting the occurrence, spatial distribution, and fate of TOPs in fresh leachate were revealed. It provides a valuable reference for the establishment of policies for the management of TOPs in MSW and the associated leachate.

Microbiome regulation for sustainable wastewater treatment

Sustainable wastewater treatment is essential for attaining clean water and sanitation, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have utilized environmental microbiomes in biological treatment processes in this effort for over a century. However, the inherent complexity and redundancy of microbial communities, and emerging chemical and biological contaminants, challenge the biotechnology applications. Over the past decades, understanding and utilization of microbial energy metabolism and interaction relationships have revolutionized the biological system. In this review, we discuss how microbiome regulation strategies are being used to generate actionable performance for low-carbon pollutant removal and resource recovery in WWTPs. The engineering application cases also highlight the real feasibility and promising prospects of the microbiome regulation approaches. In conclusion, we recommend identifying environmental risks associated with chemical and biological contaminants transformation as a prerequisite. We propose the integration of gene editing and enzyme design to precisely regulate microbiomes for the synergistic control of both chemical and biological risks. Additionally, the development of integrated technologies and engineering equipment is crucial in addressing the ongoing water crisis. This review advocates for the innovation of conventional wastewater treatment biotechnology to ensure sustainable wastewater treatment.

A critical review of persulfate-based electrochemical advanced oxidation processes for the degradation of emerging contaminants: From mechanisms and electrode materials to applications

The persulfate-based electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (PS-EAOPs) exhibit distinctive advantages in the degradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) and have garnered significant attention among researchers, leading to a consistent surge in related research publications over the past decade. Regrettably, there is still a lack of a critical review gaining deep into understanding of ECs degradation by PS-EAOPs. To address the knowledge gaps, in this review, the mechanism of electro-activated PS at the interface of the electrodes (anode, cathode and particle electrodes) is elaborated. The correlation between these electrode materials and the activation mechanism of PS is systematically discussed. The strategies for improving the performance of electrode material that determining the efficiency of PS-EAOPs are also summarized. Then, the applications of PS-EAOPs for the degradation of ECs are described. Finally, the challenges and outlook of PS-EAOPs are discussed. In summary, this review offers valuable guidance for the degradation of ECs by PS-EAOPs.

A review of the pollution signatures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the sediments of the East China Sea

Marine sediments serve as crucial reservoirs for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and their PAH signatures offer valuable historical pollution records. This article provides a comprehensive review of the pollution status of 16 priority PAHs in more than 1000 sediments from the East China Sea (ECS). It focuses on the PAH sources, spatiotemporal distributions, driving factors, and ecological risks, with information derived from peer-reviewed papers published between 2003 and 2023. The results revealed that vehicular emissions, mixed combustion sources of coal, biomass, and coke, as well as petrogenic sources, were the primary contributors to PAH pollution in the ECS sediments, accounting for 50%, 34%, and 16%, respectively. Human activities, hydrodynamic mechanisms, and environmental variables such as particle size and organic matter, collectively influenced the distribution of PAHs. Additionally, the population size and economic development played a key role in the temporal distribution of PAHs in the ECS sediments. The ecotoxicity assessment of PAHs in sediments indicated a low risk level. These outcomes are expected to provide environmentalists with detailed and up-to-date insights into sedimentary PAHs in the ECS, helping to develop suitable monitoring plans and strategies for promoting better management of ECS environment.

Exploring the defense strategies of benzalkonium chloride exposures on the antioxidant system, photosynthesis and ROS accumulation in Lemna minor

With the advent of technological advancements post the industrial revolution, thousands of chemicals are introduced into the market annually to enhance different facets of human life. Among these, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), including antibiotics and disinfectants, such as benzalkonium chlorides (BACs), are prominent. BACs, often used for surface and hand disinfection in high concentrations or as preservatives in health products such as nasal sprays and eye drops, may present environmental risks if they seep into irrigation water through prolonged exposure or improper application. The primary objective of this study is to elucidate the tolerance mechanisms that may arise in Lemna minor plants, known for their remarkable capability to accumulate substances efficiently, in response to exogenously applied BACs at varying concentrations. The study applied six different concentrations of BACs, ranging from 0.25 to 10 mg L-1. The experimental period spanned seven days, during which the treatments were conducted in triplicate to ensure reliability and reproducibility of the results. It was observed that low concentrations of BACs (0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg L-1) did not elicit any statistically significant changes in growth parameters. However, higher concentrations of BACs (2.5, 5, and 10 mg L-1) resulted in a reduction in RGR by 20%, 28%, and 36%, respectively. Chlorophyll fluorescence declined significantly at BAC doses of 5 and 10 mg L-1, with Fv/Fm ratios decreasing by 9% and 15%, and Fv/Fo ratios by 40% and 39%, respectively. Proline content decreased in all treatment groups, with a 46% reduction at 10 mg L-1 BAC. TBARS and H2O2 contents increased proportionally with BAC dosage, showing the highest increases of 30% and 40% at 10 mg L-1, respectively. The noticeable increase in SOD enzyme activity at BAC concentrations of 0.5, 1, and 2.5 mg L-1, with increases of 2.7-fold, 2.2-fold, and 1.7-fold respectively, along with minimal accumulation of H2O2, suggests that L. minor plants have a strong tolerance to BAC. This is supported by the efficient functioning of the CAT and GST enzymes, especially evident at the same concentrations, where increased activities effectively reduce the buildup of H2O2. In the AsA-GSH cycle, although variations were observed between groups, the contribution of the GR enzyme to the preservation of GSH content by recycling GSSG likely maintained redox homeostasis in the plant, especially at low concentrations of BACs. The study revealed that L. minor effectively accumulates BAC alongside its tolerance mechanisms and high antioxidant activity. These results underscore the potential for environmental cleanup efforts through phytoremediation.

Transforming contaminant ligands at water-solid interfaces via trivalent metal coordination

In environmental matrices, the migration and distribution of contaminants at water-solid interfaces play a crucial role in their capture or dissemination. Scientists working in environmental remediation and wastewater treatment are increasingly aware of metal-contaminant coordination; however, interfacial behaviors remain underexplored. Here, we show that trivalent metal ions (e.g. Al3+ and Fe3+) mediate the migration of pollutant ligands (e.g. tetracycline (TC) and ofloxacin) to the organic solid interface. In the absence of Al3+, humic acid (HA) colloids (50 mg/L) capture 26.1 % of the TC in water (initial concentration: 10 mg/L) via weak intermolecular interactions (binding energy: -5.71 kcal/mol). Adding Al3+ (2.5 mg/L) significantly enhances the binding of TC to an impressive 94.2 % via Al3+ mediated coordination (binding energy: -84.89 kcal/mol). The significant increase in binding energy results in superior interfacial immobilization. However, excess free Al3+ competes for TC binding via direct binary coordination, as confirmed based on the unique fluorescence of Al3+-TC complexes. Density functional theory calculations reveal the intricate process of HA-Al3+ binding via carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl sites. The HA-Al3+ flocs then leverage the remaining coordination capacity of Al3+ to chelate with TC. As well as providing insights into the pivotal role of metal ion on the self-purification of natural water bodies, our findings on the interfacial behavior of metal-contaminant coordination will propel coagulation technology to the capture of microscale pollutants.

Enhanced degradation of emerging contaminants by Far-UVC photolysis of peracetic acid: Synergistic effect and mechanisms

Krypton chloride (KrCl*) excimer lamps (222 nm) are used as a promising irradiation source to drive ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) in water treatment. In this study, the UV222/peracetic acid (PAA) process is implemented as a novel UV-AOPs for the degradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) in water. The results demonstrate that UV222/PAA process exhibits excellent degradation performance for carbamazepine (CBZ), with a removal rate of 90.8 % within 45 min. Notably, the degradation of CBZ in the UV222/PAA process (90.8 %) was significantly higher than that in the UV254/PAA process (15.1 %) at the same UV dose. The UV222/PAA process exhibits superior electrical energy per order (EE/O) performance while reducing resource consumption associated with the high-energy UV254/PAA process. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detection confirm that HO• play a dominant role in the reaction. The contributions of direct photolysis, HO•, and other active species (RO• and 1O2) are estimated to be 5 %, 88 %, and 7 %, respectively. In addition, the effects of Cl-, HCO3-, and humic acid (HA) on the degradation of CBZ are evaluated. The presence of relatively low concentrations of Cl-, HCO3-, and HA can inhibit CBZ degradation. The UV222/PAA oxidation process could also effectively degrade several other ECs (i.e., iohexol, sulfamethoxazole, acetochlor, ibuprofen), indicating the potential application of this process in pollutant removal. These findings will propel the development of the UV222/PAA process and provide valuable insights for its application in water treatment.

Uncertainty in Environmental Micropollutant Modeling

Water pollution policies have been enacted across the globe to minimize the environmental risks posed by micropollutants (MPs). For regulative institutions to be able to ensure the realization of environmental objectives, they need information on the environmental fate of MPs. Furthermore, there is an urgent need to further improve environmental decision-making, which heavily relies on scientific data. Use of mathematical and computational modeling in environmental permit processes for water construction activities has increased. Uncertainty of input data considers several steps from sampling and analysis to physico-chemical characteristics of MP. Machine learning (ML) methods are an emerging technique in this field. ML techniques might become more crucial for MP modeling as the amount of data is constantly increasing and the emerging new ML approaches and applications are developed. It seems that both modeling strategies, traditional and ML, use quite similar methods to obtain uncertainties. Process based models cannot consider all known and relevant processes, making the comprehensive estimation of uncertainty challenging. Problems in a comprehensive uncertainty analysis within ML approach are even greater. For both approaches generic and common method seems to be more useful in a practice than those emerging from ab initio. The implementation of the modeling results, including uncertainty and the precautionary principle, should be researched more deeply to achieve a reliable estimation of the effect of an action on the chemical and ecological status of an environment without underestimating or overestimating the risk. The prevailing uncertainties need to be identified and acknowledged and if possible, reduced. This paper provides an overview of different aspects that concern the topic of uncertainty in MP modeling.

Tricks and tracks of prevalence, occurrences, treatment technologies, and challenges of mixtures of emerging contaminants in the environment: With special emphasis on microplastic

This paper aims to emphasize the occurrence of various emerging contaminant (EC) mixtures in natural ecosystems and highlights the primary concern arising from the unregulated release into soil and water, along with their impacts on human health. Emerging contaminant mixtures, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides, antibiotics, biocides, surfactants, phthalates, enteric viruses, and microplastics (MPs), are considered toxic contaminants with grave implications. MPs play a crucial role in transporting pollutants to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems as they interact with the various components of the soil and water environments. This review summarizes that major emerging contaminants (ECs), like trimethoprim, diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole, and 17α-Ethinylestradiol, pose serious threats to public health and contribute to antimicrobial resistance. In addressing human health concerns and remediation techniques, this review critically evaluates conventional methods for removing ECs from complex matrices. The diverse physiochemical properties of surrounding environments facilitate the partitioning of ECs into sediments and other organic phases, resulting in carcinogenic, teratogenic, and estrogenic effects through active catalytic interactions and mechanisms mediated by aryl hydrocarbon receptors. The proactive toxicity of ECs mixture complexation and, in part, the yet-to-be-identified environmental mixtures of ECs represent a blind spot in current literature, necessitating conceptual frameworks for assessing the toxicity and risks with individual components and mixtures. Lastly, this review concludes with an in-depth exploration of future scopes, knowledge gaps, and challenges, emphasizing the need for a concerted effort in managing ECs and other organic pollutants.

Integrated occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern, including microplastics, in urban and agricultural watersheds in the State of São Paulo, Brazil

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), including microplastics, have been the focus of many studies due to their environmental impact, affecting biota and human health. The diverse land uses and occupation of watersheds are important parameters driving the occurrence of these contaminants. CECs such as pesticides, drugs, hormones, and industrial-origin substances were analyzed in urban/industrial (Atibaia) and agricultural (Preto/Turvo) watersheds located in São Paulo state, Brazil. A total of 24 CECs were investigated, and, as a result, only 5 (caffeine, carbendazim, atrazine, ametrine and 2-hydroxytrazine) were responsible for 81.73 % of the statistical difference between watersheds contamination profile. The Atibaia watershed presented considerable concentrations of caffeine (ranging from 75 to 2025 ng L-1), while carbendazim (44 to 1144 ng L-1) and atrazine (3 to 266 ng L-1) presented highest levels in Preto/Turvo watershed. In all sampling points, the cumulative potential aquatic life risk assessed by the NORMAN database indicates some level of environmental concern associated to pesticides and caffeine (risk quotient >1). Microplastics had been analyzed in both watersheds, being the white/transparent fragments in size between 100 and 250 μm the most detected in this study. The estimated abundance in the Atibaia watershed ranged from 349 to 2898 items m-3 presenting some influence of pluviosity, while in Rio Preto/Turvo ranged from 169 to 6370 items m-3, being more abundant in the dam area without a clear influence of pluviosity. In both basins, polyethylene and polypropylene were the most detected polymers, probably due to the intense use of single-use plastics in urban areas. Possibly, due to the distinct physic-chemical properties of microplastics and organic CECs, no correlations were observed between their occurrence, which makes us conclude that they have different transport mechanism, behavior, and fate in the environment.

Emerging contaminants: A One Health perspective

Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

Implementation of temporal moments to elucidate the reactive transport of metformin and erythromycin in the saturated porous media

This study investigates the fate and transport dynamics of metformin (MTN) and erythromycin (ETM), both classified as pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), in a saturated sandy soil column using temporal moment analysis (TMA). The key flow and transport parameters, including Darcy velocity, longitudinal dispersivity, adsorption, and degradation coefficients, were analyzed. The results reveal that MTN, a highly mobile contaminant, is eliminated from the column in approximately 40 days, while ETM shows significant adsorption due to its hydrophobic and adsorptive nature. Darcy velocity significantly affects PPCP transport; a one-order magnitude change alters contaminant mass recovery at the column outlet by 88% for MTN and 39-fold for ETM. Longitudinal dispersivity has minimal impact on the transport of PPCPs. However adsorption primarily governs the fate of PPCPs with high adsorption coefficients (Kd), and degradation rates control the fate of low-sorbing PPCPs. A one-order magnitude change in Kd results in a 55% change in the zeroth temporal moment (ZTM) of MTN and a 30-fold change in the case of ETM. Additionally, a one-order magnitude change in the degradation coefficient leads to a 60% variation in MTN's ZTM and a 5% variation in ETM's ZTM. Thus, TMA is a valuable tool for understanding PPCP dynamics in subsurface environments, providing critical insights for managing their increasing concentrations.

Removal of Micropollutants in Water Reclamation by Membrane Filtration: Impact of Pretreatments and Adsorption

Organic micropollutants (OMPs) present in water and wastewater are in the spotlight because of their potentially harmful effects even at low concentrations and the difficulties of their elimination in urban wastewater treatment plants (UWWTPs). This study explores the impact of some membrane filtration processes on the removal of a group of 11 OMPs with an eye on the effects of two pretreatments (i.e., coagulation and adsorption onto powdered activated carbon (PAC)) and the adsorption of OMPs onto the membranes on the overall removal. For this purpose, ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) experiments were conducted with selected OMPs spiked in ultrapure water and secondary effluents from UWWTPs. It was observed that the adsorption of OMPs onto the membranes was influenced by the characteristics of the membranes, as well as the presence of effluent organic matter (EfOM). Since adsorption was the dominant mechanism for the rejection of OMPs by UF membranes, a study of the adsorption equilibrium of the micropollutants using UF membrane pieces as the adsorbent was conducted. The adsorption isotherms for the most hydrophobic OMPs fitted the Langmuir model. The efficiency of coagulation and powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption coupled with UF were also investigated. Both pretreatments alleviated membrane fouling and improved the rejection of organic and inorganic matter. The PAC pretreatment significantly improved the removal of OMPs in the combined PAC/UF process. The best options for achieving reclaimed water with satisfactory physicochemical quality, nearly devoid of OMPs and microorganisms, and suitable for diverse reuse purposes are either the NF treatment or the combination of PAC/UF.

Comprehensive review of emerging contaminants: Detection technologies, environmental impact, and management strategies

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are a diverse group of unregulated pollutants increasingly present in the environment. These contaminants, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, endocrine disruptors, and industrial chemicals, can enter the environment through various pathways and persist, accumulating in the food chain and posing risks to ecosystems and human health. This comprehensive review examines the chemical characteristics, sources, and varieties of ECs. It critically evaluates the current understanding of their environmental and health impacts, highlighting recent advancements and challenges in detection and analysis. The review also assesses existing regulations and policies, identifying shortcomings and proposing potential enhancements. ECs pose significant risks to wildlife and ecosystems by disrupting animal hormones, causing genetic alterations that diminish diversity and resilience, and altering soil nutrient dynamics and the physical environment. Furthermore, ECs present increasing risks to human health, including hormonal disruptions, antibiotic resistance, endocrine disruption, neurological effects, carcinogenic effects, and other long-term impacts. To address these critical issues, the review offers recommendations for future research, emphasizing areas requiring further investigation to comprehend the full implications of these contaminants. It also suggests increased funding and support for research, development of advanced detection technologies, establishment of standardized methods, adoption of precautionary regulations, enhanced public awareness and education, cross-sectoral collaboration, and integration of scientific research into policy-making. By implementing these solutions, we can improve our ability to detect, monitor, and manage ECs, reducing environmental and public health risks.

Tradeoffs between hygiene behaviors and triclosan loads from rivers to coastal seas in the post COVID-19 era

The use of healthcare products containing triclosan has surged globally due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we used a global spatially explicit model to simulate triclosan export by rivers to coastal seas in the post-COVID-19 era. The global triclosan model shows that the primary watersheds of triclosan export in Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, United States, Brazil, India, and China, with river mouths presenting higher ecological risk distributed in Europe, South Asia, and America. It is estimated that triclosan concentrations in more than 77 % of global watersheds will be below the toxicity threshold by 2030 if the per capita use of triclosan is halved. Rather than completely restricting the use of triclosan, we should focus on integrating the effectiveness data of triclosan to develop recommendations for essential usage, substitutes, and wastewater treatment plants that minimize triclosan pollution in the post-COVID-19 era.

One-step fabrication of millimeter-scale hollow vesicles with chitosan /DADMAC/ sodium alginate graft copolymer for enhanced anionic dye adsorption

Hollow vesicles are promising in water treatment due to their unique structure of the membrane and inner cavity. However, the adsorption capacity needs to be improved for targeted pollutants. Herein, millimeter-scale hollow vesicles were prepared with a one-step process of sequential stirring and grafting using chitosan, diallyldimethylammonium chloride, and sodium alginate as raw materials with the purpose of efficient removal of anionic dyes from wastewater. The composite vesicles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The hollow vesicles showed the structure of the cationic membrane and the inner cavity, facilitating the dye adsorption. The adsorption capacity for the anionic dye Reactive Black 5 reached 698.1 mg/g, more than twice that of the binary composite vesicles without graft. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm data coincided with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively, and the adsorption mechanism was monolayer chemisorption. Moreover, the vesicles worked well in wide ranges of environment pH, temperature, and co-existing pollutants. They also possessed excellent cyclic regeneration performance, in which 93 % of the initial adsorption capacity was maintained after four cycles. These results indicate that the millimeter-scale hollow vesicles exhibit broad application prospects for wastewater purification.

Occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in a wastewater treatment plant with Bacillus bio-reactor treatment

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have attracted wide attention due to their environmental impacts and health risks. PPCPs released through wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are estimated to be 80 %. Nevertheless, the occurrence of PPCPs in the WWTPs equipped with Bacillus spec.-based bioreactors (BBR) treatment system remains unclear. In this study, sludge and waste water samples were collected during separate winter and summer sampling campaigns from a typical BBR treatment system. The results indicate that out of 58 target PPCPs, 27 compounds were detected in the waste water (0.06-1900 ng/L), and 23 were found in the sludge (0.6-7755 ng/g dw). Paraxanthine was the chemical of the highest abundance in the influent due to the high consumption of the parent compounds caffeine and theobromine. The profile for PPCPs in the wastewater and sludge exhibited no seasonal variation. Overall, the removal of target PPCPs in summer is more effective than the winter. In the BBR bio-reactor, it was found that selected PPCPs (at ng/L level) can be completely removed. The efficiency for individual PPCP removal was increased from 1.0 % to 50 % in this unit, after target specific adjustments of the process. The effective removal of selected PPCPs by the BBR treatment system is explained by combined sorption and biodegradation processing. The re-occurrence of PPCPs in the wastewater was monitored. Negative removal efficiency was explained by the cleavage of Phase II metabolites after the biotransformation process, and the lack of equilibrium for PPCPs in the sludge of the second clarifier. A compound specific risk quotient (RQ) was calculated and applied for studying the potential environmental risks. Diphenhydramine is found with the highest environmental risk in wastewater, and 15 other PPCPs show negligible risks in sewage sludge.

Alps at risk: High-mountain lakes as reservoirs of persistent and emerging contaminants

Despite their remote locations, high-mountain lakes located in the Alps are vulnerable to chemical pollution. This discussion explores the important aspects of these lakes as repositories of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), elucidating their sources and implications for both the environment and human health. In terms of the presence of POPs in high-altitude lakes of the Alps, 14 studies have been identified examining the occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyls, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane an its metabolites, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The bulk of research on POPs in high-mountain lakes is concentrated in the Italian Alps (63%), followed by Switzerland (22%), Austria (12%), and France (3%), respectively. Sediment is predominantly investigated (65%), followed by fish (33%) and water (2%). Similarly, in relation to the presence of CECs in high-mountain lakes of the Alps, six studies have been identified investigating the occurrence of musks, perfluorinated compounds, and microplastics. Investigations into CECs predominantly occur in Switzerland (42%), France (33%), and Italy (25%), with fish samples (muscle and liver) being the primary focus (46%), followed by sediment (17%) and water (17%). Other compartments like zooplankton, frog/tadpoles, and snow remain less explored. The discussion also shed light on various pathways through which pollutants reach these remote landscapes, including atmospheric transport, glacial meltwater, and human activities. Protecting these pristine peaks demands concerted efforts encompassing ongoing research, vigilant monitoring, and dedicated conservation initiatives.

Sulfonamide-induced DNA hypomethylation disturbed sugar metabolism in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

DNA methylation is well-accepted as a bridge to unravel the complex interplay between genome and environmental exposures, and its alteration regulated the cellular metabolic responses towards pollutants. However, the mechanism underlying site-specific aberrant DNA methylation and metabolic disorders under pollutant stresses remained elusive. Herein, the multilevel omics interferences of sulfonamides (i.e., sulfadiazine and sulfamerazine), a group of antibiotics pervasive in farmland soils, towards rice in 14 days of 1 mg/L hydroponic exposure were systematically evaluated. Metabolome and transcriptome analyses showed that 57.1-71.4 % of mono- and disaccharides were accumulated, and the differentially expressed genes were involved in the promotion of sugar hydrolysis, as well as the detoxification of sulfonamides. Most differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were hypomethylated ones (accounting for 87-95 %), and 92 % of which were located in the CHH context (H = A, C, or T base). KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that CHH-DMRs in the promoter regions were enriched in sugar metabolism. To reveal the significant hypomethylation of CHH, multi-spectroscopic and thermodynamic approaches, combined with molecular simulation were conducted to investigate the molecular interaction between sulfonamides and DNA in different sequence contexts, and the result demonstrated that sulfonamides would insert into the minor grooves of DNA, and exhibited a stronger affinity with the CHH contexts of DNA compared to CG or CHG contexts. Computational modeling of DNA 3D structures further confirmed that the binding led to a pitch increase of 0.1 Å and a 3.8° decrease in the twist angle of DNA in the CHH context. This specific interaction and the downregulation of methyltransferase CMT2 (log2FC = -4.04) inhibited the DNA methylation. These results indicated that DNA methylation-based assessment was useful for metabolic toxicity prediction and health risk assessment.

Predicting Antibiotic Resistance and Assessing the Risk Burden from Antibiotics: A Holistic Modeling Framework in a Tropical Reservoir

Predicting the hotspots of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquatics is crucial for managing associated risks. We developed an integrated modeling framework toward predicting the spatiotemporal abundance of antibiotics, indicator bacteria, and their corresponding antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), as well as assessing the potential AMR risks to the aquatic ecosystem in a tropical reservoir. Our focus was on two antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP), and on Escherichia coli (E. coli) and its variant resistant to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (EC_SXT). We validated the predictive model using withheld data, with all Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) values above 0.79, absolute relative difference (ARD) less than 25%, and coefficient of determination (R2) greater than 0.800 for the modeled targets. Predictions indicated concentrations of 1-15 ng/L for SMX, 0.5-5 ng/L for TMP, and 0 to 5 (log10 MPN/100 mL) for E. coli and -1.1 to 3.5 (log10 CFU/100 mL) for EC_SXT. Risk assessment suggested that the predicted TMP could pose a higher risk of AMR development than SMX, but SMX could possess a higher ecological risk. The study lays down a hybrid modeling framework for integrating a statistic model with a process-based model to predict AMR in a holistic manner, thus facilitating the development of a better risk management framework.

Sulfur Vacancies in Pyrite Trigger the Path to Nonradical Singlet Oxygen and Spontaneous Sulfamethoxazole Degradation: Unveiling the Hidden Potential in Sediments

Pharmaceutical residues in sediments are concerning as ubiquitous emerging contaminants. Pyrite is the most abundant sulfide minerals in the estuarine and coastal sediments, making it a major sink for pharmaceutical pollutants such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX). However, research on the adsorption and redox behaviors of SMX on the pyrite surface is limited. Here, we investigated the impact of the nonphotochemical process of pyrite on the fate of coexisting SMX. Remarkably, sulfur vacancies (SVs) on pyrite promoted the generation of nonradical species (hydrogen peroxide, H2O2 and singlet oxygen, 1O2), thereby exhibiting prominent SMX degradation performance under darkness. Nonradical 1O2 contributed approximately 73.1% of the total SMX degradation. The SVs with high surrounding electron density showed an advanced affinity for adsorbing O2 and then initiated redox reactions in the sediment electron-storing geobattery pyrite, resulting in the extensive generation of H2O2 through a two-electron oxygen reduction pathway. Surface Fe(III) (hydro)oxides on pyrite facilitated the decomposition of H2O2 to 1O2 generation. Distinct nonradical products were observed in all investigated estuarine and coastal samples with the concentrations of H2O2 ranging from 1.96 to 2.94 μM, while the concentrations of 1O2 ranged from 4.63 × 10-15 to 8.93 × 10-15 M. This dark-redox pathway outperformed traditional photochemical routes for pollutant degradation, broadening the possibilities for nonradical species use in estuarine and coastal sediments. Our study highlighted the SV-triggered process as a ubiquitous yet previously overlooked source of nonradical species, which offered fresh insights into geochemical processes and the dynamics of pollutants in regions of frequent redox oscillations and sulfur-rich sediments.

Unveiling combined ecotoxicity: Interactions and impacts of engineered nanoparticles and PPCPs

Emerging contaminants such as engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are of great concern because of their wide distribution and incomplete removal in conventional wastewater and soil treatment processes. The production and usage of ENPs and PPCPs inevitably result in their coexistence in different environmental media, thus posing various risks to organisms in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. However, the existing literature on the physicochemical interactions between ENPs and PPCPs and their effects on organisms is rather limited. Therefore, this paper summarized the ecotoxicity of combined ENPs and PPCPs by discussing: (1) the interactions between ENPs and PPCPs, including processes such as aggregation, adsorption, transformation, and desorption, considering the influence of environmental factors like pH, ionic strength, dissolved organic matter, and temperature; (2) the effects of these interactions on bioaccumulation, bioavailability and biotoxicity in organisms at different trophic levels; (3) the impacted of ENPs and PPCPs on cellular-level biological process. This review elucidated the potential ecological hazards associated with the interaction of ENPs and PPCPs, and serves as a foundation for future investigations into the ecotoxicity and mode of action of ENPs, PPCPs, and their co-occurring metabolites.

Far-UVC Photolysis of Peroxydisulfate for Micropollutant Degradation in Water

Increasing radical yields to reduce UV fluence requirement for achieving targeted removal of micropollutants in water would make UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) less energy demanding in the context of United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and carbon neutrality. We herein demonstrate that, by switching the UV radiation source from conventional low-pressure UV at 254 nm (UV254) to emerging Far-UVC at 222 nm (UV222), the fluence-based concentration of HO• in the UV/peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS) AOP increases by 6.40, 2.89, and 6.00 times in deionized water, tap water, and surface water, respectively, with increases in the fluence-based concentration of SO4•- also by 5.06, 5.81, and 55.47 times, respectively. The enhancement to radical generation is confirmed using a kinetic model. The pseudo-first-order degradation rate constants of 16 micropollutants by the UV222/PDS AOP in surface water are predicted to be 1.94-13.71 times higher than those by the UV254/PDS AOP. Among the tested water matrix components, chloride and nitrate decrease SO4•- but increase HO• concentration in the UV222/PDS AOP. Compared to the UV254/PDS AOP, the UV222/PDS AOP decreases the formation potentials of carbonaceous disinfection byproducts (DBPs) but increases the formation potentials of nitrogenous DBPs.

Current strategies on bioremediation of personal care products and detergents: Sustainability and life cycle assessment

This review examines the current strategies employed in the bioremediation of personal care products and detergents, with a specific focus on their sustainability and environmental impact. This bioremediation is essential for environmental rejuvenation, as it uses living organisms to detergents and other daily used products. Its distinctiveness stems from sustainable, nature-centric ways that provide eco-friendly solutions for pollution eradication and nurturing a healthy planet, all while avoiding copying. Explores the use of microbial consortia, enzyme-based treatments, and novel biotechnological approaches in the context of environmental remediation. Additionally, the ecological implications and long-term sustainability of these strategies are assessed. Understanding the strengths and limitations of these bioremediation techniques is essential for developing effective and environmentally friendly solutions to mitigate the impact of personal care products and detergents on ecosystems.

What is the role of nitrate/nitrite in trace organic contaminants degradation and transformation during UV-based advanced oxidation processes?

The effectiveness of UV-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) in degrading trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) can be significantly influenced by the ubiquitous presence of nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) in water and wastewater. Indeed, NO3-/NO2- can play multiple roles of NO3-/NO2- in UV-AOPs, leading to complexities and conflicting results observed in existing research. They can inhibit the degradation of TrOCs by scavenging reactive species and/or competitively absorbing UV light. Conversely, they can also enhance the elimination of TrOCs by generating additional •OH and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Furthermore, the presence of NO3-/NO2- during UV-AOP treatment can affect the transformation pathways of TrOCs, potentially resulting in the nitration/nitrosation of TrOCs. The resulting nitro(so)-products are generally more toxic than the parent TrOCs and may become precursors of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs) upon chlorination. Particularly, since the impact of NO3-/NO2- in UV-AOPs is largely due to the generation of RNS from NO3-/NO2- including NO•, NO2•, and peroxynitrite (ONOO-/ONOOH), this review covers the generation, properties, and detection methods of these RNS. From kinetic, mechanistic, and toxicologic perspectives, future research needs are proposed to advance the understanding of how NO3-/NO2- can be exploited to improve the performance of UV-AOPs treating TrOCs. This critical review provides a comprehensive framework outlining the multifaceted impact of NO3-/NO2- in UV-AOPs, contributing insights for basic research and practical applications of UV-AOPs containing NO3-/NO2-.

Deciphering behaviors of 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (alternative-PFOS) on anammox processes: Nitrogen removal efficiency and microbial adaptability

This study investigates the behaviors and effects of F-53B, an alternative to perfluorooctane sulfonate on anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) processes. Results showed that the nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) reached 83.8 % at a F-53B concentration of 0.5 mg·L-1, while NRE decreased to 66.9 % with 5 mg·L-1 of F-53B. The defluorination rates of 17.8 % (0.5 mg·L-1) and 9.3 % (5 mg·L-1) were observed, respectively, suggesting the occurrence of F-53B degradation. The relative abundance of Ca. Kuenenia decreased from 26.1 % to 16.2 % with the F-53B concentration increasing from 0.5 mg·L-1 to 5 mg·L-1. Meanwhile, Denitratisoma was selectively enriched with a relative abundance of 40.7 % at an F-53B concentration of 0.5 mg·L-1. Ca. Kuenenia could reduce reactive oxygen species induced by F-53B to maintain the balance of oxidative stress. This study gains insight into the behaviors and metabolic mechanisms of F-53B in anammox consortia, suggesting the feasibility of anammox processes for industrial wastewater.

Environmental fate and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration during the 21st century

Understanding the spatiotemporal distribution and behavior of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the context of climate change and human activities is essential for effective environmental management and public health protection. This study utilized an integrated simulation system that combines land-use, hydrological, and multimedia fugacity models to predict the concentrations, transportation, and degradation of 16 priority-controlled PAHs across six environmental compartments (air, water, soil, sediment, vegetation, and impermeable surfaces) within one of the world's prominent urban agglomerations, the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA), under future Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSP)-Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) scenarios. Incremental lifetime carcinogenic risk for adults and children exposed to PAHs were also evaluated. The results show a declining trend in PAHs concentrations and associated health risks during the 21st century. Land use types, hydrological characteristics, population, and GDP, have significant correlations with the fate of PAHs. The primary removal for PAHs is determined to be driven by advection through air and water. PAHs covering on impermeable surfaces pose a relatively higher health risk compared to those in other environmental media. This study offers valuable insights into PAHs pollution in the YRDUA, aiming to ensure public health safety, with the potential for application in other urban areas.

Spatiotemporal variation, partitioning, and ecological risk assessment of benzothiazoles, benzotriazoles, and benzotriazole UV absorbers in the Yangtze River Estuary and its adjacent area

The distributions and toxicities of the pollutants benzothiazoles (BTHs), benzotriazoles (BTRs), and benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVs) have attracted much attention, but most research has focused on freshwater environments and few have examined their levels in marine environments. This study, for the first time, investigated the spatial and temporal variability and ecological risks of BTHs, BTRs and BUVs in the Yangtze River estuary and its adjacent area, and further elucidated how environmental factors influence the transport of these contaminants. The concentrations of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in seawater showed significant seasonal variability, with the highest concentrations in summer, followed by autumn, and then winter-spring. The spatiotemporal variability in BTHs, BTRs and BUVs in the seawater and sediments samples showed decreasing trends from nearshore to offshore, reflecting the influence of river discharge. Marine debris and continuous discharge from cities were responsible for the high detection frequency of these contaminants in the YRE and its adjacent area. Furthermore, the moderate risk from the presence of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs as they accumulate in sediments should not be ignored. Our study provides new insights into the fate and ecological risk of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in the estuary.

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Aquatic Environment: How Can Regions at Risk be Identified in the Future?

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are an indispensable component of a healthy society. However, they are well-established environmental contaminants, and many can elicit biological disruption in exposed organisms. It is now a decade since the landmark review covering the top 20 questions on PPCPs in the environment (Boxall et al., 2012). In the present study we discuss key research priorities for the next 10 years with a focus on how regions where PPCPs pose the greatest risk to environmental and human health, either now or in the future, can be identified. Specifically, we discuss why this problem is of importance and review our current understanding of PPCPs in the aquatic environment. Foci include PPCP occurrence and what drives their environmental emission as well as our ability to both quantify and model their distribution. We highlight critical areas for future research including the involvement of citizen science for environmental monitoring and using modeling techniques to bridge the gap between research capacity and needs. Because prioritization of regions in need of environmental monitoring is needed to assess future/current risks, we also propose four criteria with which this may be achieved. By applying these criteria to available monitoring data, we narrow the focus on where monitoring efforts for PPCPs are most urgent. Specifically, we highlight 19 cities across Africa, Central America, the Caribbean, and Asia as priorities for future environmental monitoring and risk characterization and define four priority research questions for the next 10 years. Vertical distribution and risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and other micropollutants in southern North Sea coastal waters

Pharmaceutical compounds are micropollutants of emerging concern, as well as other classes of chemicals such as UV filters and artificial sweeteners. They enter marine environments via wastewater treatment plants, aquaculture runoff, hospital effluents, and shipping activities. While many studies have investigated the presence and distribution of these pollutants in numerous coastal areas, our study is the first to focus on their occurrence, spatial distribution, and vertical distribution in the sea surface microlayer (SML) and the near-surface layer of marine environments. We analyzed 62 pharmaceutical compounds, one UV filter, and six artificial sweeteners from the SML to the corresponding underlying water (0 cm, 20 cm, 50 cm, 100 cm, and 150 cm) at four stations in the southern North Sea. One station is the enclosed Jade Bay, one is the Weser estuary at Bremerhaven, and the other two stations (NS_7 and NS_8) are in the open German Bight. Jade Bay receives pollutants from surrounding wastewater treatment plants, while the Weser estuary receives pollutants from cities like Bremerhaven, which has dense populations and industrial activities. Concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds were higher in the upper water layers (from the SML to 20 cm). Eleven pharmaceutical compounds (caffeine, carbamazepine, gemfibrozil, ibuprofen, metoprolol, salicylic acid, clarithromycin, novobiocin, clindamycin, trimethoprim, and tylosin) were detected in >95 % of our samples. One UV filter (benzophenone-4) was found in 83 % and three artificial sweeteners (acesulfame, saccharin, and sucralose) in 100 % of all our samples. All artificial sweeteners posed high risks to the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna. Understanding the spatial and vertical distribution of pharmaceuticals and other micropollutants in marine environments may be essential in assessing their dispersal and detection in other aquatic environments.

Correlations between China's socioeconomic status, disease burdens, and pharmaceuticals and personal care product levels in wastewater

The presence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in domestic wastewater can potentially indicate socioeconomic status and disease burdens. However, current knowledge is limited to the correlation between specific pharmaceuticals and diseases. This study aims to explore the associations between socioeconomic status, disease burdens, and PPCP levels in domestic wastewater at a national level. Samples from 171 wastewater influents across China were used to measure PPCPs, and the per capita consumption of PPCPs was calculated. Results showed that the 31 targeted PPCPs were widely present in wastewater with varying occurrence characteristics. The mean consumption levels of different PPCPs varied greatly, ranging from 0.03 to 110723.15 µg/d/capita. While there were no significant regional differences in the overall pattern of PPCP consumption, 22 PPCPs showed regional variations between Northern China and Southern China. PPCPs with similar usage purposes exhibited similar distribution patterns. Disease burden (70.1%) was the main factor affecting most PPCP consumption compared to socioeconomic factors (26.4%). Through correlation analyses, specific types of PPCPs were identified that were highly associated with socioeconomic status and disease burdens, such as hypertension-bezafibrate, brucellosis-quinolones, sulfonamides, hepatitis-triclosan, triclocarban, socioeconomic development-fluoxetine, and people's living standards-gemfibrozil. Despite some uncertainties, this study provides valuable insights into the relationship between PPCPs in domestic wastewater and socioeconomic status and human health.

Advances in identifying and managing emerging contaminants in aquatic ecosystems: Analytical approaches, toxicity assessment, transformation pathways, environmental fate, and remediation strategies

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are increasingly recognized as threats to human health and ecosystems. This review evaluates advanced analytical methods, particularly mass spectrometry, for detecting ECs and understanding their toxicity, transformation pathways, and environmental distribution. Our findings underscore the reliability of current techniques and the potential of upcoming methods. The adverse effects of ECs on aquatic life necessitate both in vitro and in vivo toxicity assessments. Evaluating the distribution and degradation of ECs reveals that they undergo physical, chemical, and biological transformations. Remediation strategies such as advanced oxidation, adsorption, and membrane bioreactors effectively treat EC-contaminated waters, with combinations of these techniques showing the highest efficacy. To minimize the impact of ECs, a proactive approach involving monitoring, regulations, and public education is vital. Future research should prioritize the refining of detection methods and formulation of robust policies for EC management.

A bibliometric analysis of emerging contaminants (ECs) (2001-2021): Evolution of hotspots and research trends

Emerging contaminants (ECs) have attracted increasing attention in the past two decades because of their ubiquitous existence and high environmental risk. Understanding the progress of research and the evolution of hot topics is critical. This study provides a bibliometric review, along with a quantitative trend analysis of approximately 8000 publication records dated from 2001 to 2021. Wider distribution in various subjects was discovered in terms of publication numbers, indicating a strong tendency for EC research to become an interdisciplinary topic. Visualization of term co-occurrence analysis revealed that the ECs study went through three stages over time: identification and detection, traceability and risk, and process and control. Quantitative trend analysis revealed that antibiotics, microplastics, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), per/poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pesticides, heavy metals, and nanoparticles are attracting increasing attention, whereas conventional pharmaceuticals, persistent organic pollutants, and materials such as benzotriazole, diclofenac, bisphenol A, carbamazepine, triclosan, and titanium dioxide exhibit a downward trend. PFAS and EDCs are considered potential future core hotspots for the hysteretic rise in research attention compared with conventional ECs. Furthermore, analysis of research linkage and the developing stages of ECs could be possible approach to determine the evolution of hotspots in ECs study. This study provides objective and comprehensive insights into the research landscape of ECs, which may shed light on future developmental directions for researchers interested in this field.

Emerging Contaminants: An Emerging Risk Factor for Diabetes Mellitus

Emerging contaminants have been increasingly recognized as critical determinants in global public health outcomes. However, the intricate relationship between these contaminants and glucose metabolism remains to be fully elucidated. The paucity of comprehensive clinical data, coupled with the need for in-depth mechanistic investigations, underscores the urgency to decipher the precise molecular and cellular pathways through which these contaminants potentially mediate the initiation and progression of diabetes mellitus. A profound understanding of the epidemiological impact of these emerging contaminants, as well as the elucidation of the underlying mechanistic pathways, is indispensable for the formulation of evidence-based policy and preventive interventions. This review systematically aggregates contemporary findings from epidemiological investigations and delves into the mechanistic correlates that tether exposure to emerging contaminants, including endocrine disruptors, perfluorinated compounds, microplastics, and antibiotics, to glycemic dysregulation. A nuanced exploration is undertaken focusing on potential dietary sources and the consequential role of the gut microbiome in their toxic effects. This review endeavors to provide a foundational reference for future investigations into the complex interplay between emerging contaminants and diabetes mellitus.

Functionalization strategies of metal-organic frameworks for biomedical applications and treatment of emerging pollutants: A review

One of the representative coordination polymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) material, is of hotspot interest in the multi field thanks to their unique structural characteristics and properties. As a novel hierarchical structural class, MOFs show diverse topologies, intrinsic behaviors, flexibility, etc. However, bare MOFs have less desirable biofunction, high humid sensitivity and instability in water, restraining their efficiencies in biomedical and environmental applications. Thus, a structural modification is required to address such drawbacks. Herein, we pinpoint new strategies in the synthesis and functionalization of MOFs to meet demanding requirements in in vitro tests, i.e., antibacterial face masks against corona virus infection and in wound healing and nanocarriers for drug delivery in anticancer. Regarding the treatment of wastewater containing emerging pollutants such as POPs, PFAS, and PPCPs, functionalized MOFs showed excellent performance with high efficiency and selectivity. Challenges in toxicity, vast database of clinical trials for biomedical tests and production cost can be still presented. MOFs-based composites can be, however, a bright candidate for reasonable replacement of traditional nanomaterials in biomedical and wastewater treatment applications.

Source, transport, and toxicity of emerging contaminants in aquatic environments: A review on recent studies

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are gaining global attention owing to their widespread presence and adverse effects on human health. ECs comprise numerous composite types and pose a potential threat to the growth and functional traits of species and ecosystems. Although the occurrence and fate of ECs has been extensively studied, little is known about their long-term biological effects. This review attempts to gain insights into the unhindered connections and overlaps in aquatic ecosystems. Microplastics (MPs), one of the most representative ECs, are carriers of other pollutants because of their strong adsorption capacity. They form a complex of pollutants that can be transmitted to aquatic organisms and humans through the extended food chain, increasing the concentration of pollutants by tens of thousands of times. Adsorption, interaction and transport effects of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment are also discussed. Furthermore, the current state of knowledge on the ecotoxicity of single- and two-pollutant models is presented. Herein, we discuss how aquatic organisms within complex food networks may be particularly vulnerable to harm from ECs in the presence of perturbations. This review provides an advanced understanding of the interactions and potential toxic effects of ECs on aquatic organisms.

Long short-term memory models of water quality in inland water environments

Water quality is substantially influenced by a multitude of dynamic and interrelated variables, including climate conditions, landuse and seasonal changes. Deep learning models have demonstrated predictive power of water quality due to the superior ability to automatically learn complex patterns and relationships from variables. Long short-term memory (LSTM), one of deep learning models for water quality prediction, is a type of recurrent neural network that can account for longer-term traits of time-dependent data. It is the most widely applied network used to predict the time series of water quality variables. First, we reviewed applications of a standalone LSTM and discussed its calculation time, prediction accuracy, and good robustness with process-driven numerical models and the other machine learning. This review was expanded into the LSTM model with data pre-processing techniques, including the Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise method and Synchrosqueezed Wavelet Transform. The review then focused on the coupling of LSTM with a convolutional neural network, attention network, and transfer learning. The coupled networks demonstrated their performance over the standalone LSTM model. We also emphasized the influence of the static variables in the model and used the transformation method on the dataset. Outlook and further challenges were addressed. The outlook for research and application of LSTM in hydrology concludes the review.

An integrated modelling framework for multiple pollution source identification in surface water

Pollution source identification is vital in water safety management. An integrated simulation-optimization modelling framework comprising a process-based hydrodynamic water quality model, artificial neural network surrogate model and particle swarm optimization (PSO) was proposed to achieve rapid, accurate and reliable pollution source identification. In this study, the hydrodynamics and water quality processes in a straight lab-based flume were simulated to test pollution source identification under steady flow conditions. Additionally, the pollution source identification in the unsteady flow conditions was examined using a real-life estuary, specifically the Yangtze River estuary. First, we developed two process-based models to simulate hydrodynamics and water quality in the flume and estuary. Then, the data generated from the process-based models were used to develop surrogate models. Three typical artificial neural networks (ANNs) algorithms: backpropagation (BP), radial basis function (RBF) and general regression neural networks (GRNN) were selected to develop surrogates for process-based models (PBMs), and they were coupled with PSO algorithm to achieve the hybrid modelling framework for pollution source identification. Our results showed that hybrid PBM-ANNs-PSO models could be applied to identify the pollution source and quantify release intensity in spatial distribution when the discharge type was assumed as the point source with a continuous release. Multiple-performance criteria metrics, in terms of the coefficient of determination, root-mean-square error, mean absolute error, evaluated the model performance as "Excellent prediction". The BP-PSO models consistently appear to be the top-performing source identification model within the developed models, with most cases of relative error (RE) values lower than 5%. The new insights from the hybrid modelling framework would provide useful information for the local government agency to make reasonable decisions regarding pollution source identification issues.

Carbon-based materials as efficient adsorbents for the removal of antibiotics: The real contributions of carbon edge sites

Disclosing the effect of edge defects in carbon-based materials on antibiotic removal remains a great challenge. In this study, carbon-based adsorbents (DC-s) with different degrees of edge defects were synthesized on a large scale via a direct calcination of sodium citrate (SC) and their adsorption performance to antibiotics were explored. The experimental results suggested that the edge defects of DC-s samples were the active sites for the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) and norfloxacin (NOR). The adsorption capacity of the optimal sample DC-900 for TC and NOR was 155.8 and 168.0 mg g-1, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that zigzag edge defects rather than armchair edge defects were crucial to the excellent adsorption performance of DC-s samples for antibiotics, and the natures for the difference in the adsorption performance of the two edge defects for antibiotics were their different electronic structures. In addition, DC-900 also showed stable adsorption efficiency for antibiotics in the interferences, dynamic adsorption, and cycle experiments, suggesting its good environmental application potential. This study provides new insight into clarifying the natures of edge defects with carbon-based adsorbents for high-efficiency removal of antibiotics, which may guide the exploration of cost-effective carbon-based adsorbents.
