Abstract
AIM Periodontal disease (PD) screening models based on a self-reported questionnaire were previously established and externally validated. The aim of the present study is to explore whether the screening models could be modified to improve prediction performance; this methodology is called 'updating'. METHODS Updating the models for 'total' and 'severe' PD was performed using two datasets. One dataset from a previous study (n = 155) was used to explore the updating, and a second (n = 187, built for the current study) was used to validate whether updating improved performance. Updating was based on different statistical approaches, including model recalibration and revision. Discrimination and calibration were assessed after updating. RESULTS For 'total' PD, the update based on model revision improved its performance. However, still low AUCs were found: 0.64 (0.56-0.73) and 0.61 (0.53-0.69) with corresponding O:E ratios 1.00 (0.80-1.23) and 0.92 (0.75-1.13) in the update and validation cohorts, respectively. For 'severe' PD, performance of the original model without update performed still the best; AUCs were 0.72 (0.61-0.83) and 0.75 (0.66-0.84) in the update and validation cohorts, respectively, with corresponding O:E ratios 0.60 (0.38-0.84) and 0.62 (0.42-0.87). CONCLUSIONS The updating methodology did not further improve the performance of the original 'severe' PD screening model; it performed satisfactorily in the medical care setting. Despite updating attempts, the screening model for 'total' PD remained sub-optimal. Screening for 'severe' PD can now be implemented in the medical care setting.

Abstract
Objective Periodontitis and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are both linked to inflammation, but their association remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the association between periodontitis and MetS prevalence and evaluate its impact on the prognosis of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in MetS. Methods Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association between periodontitis and the prevalence of MetS, while Cox regression analysis was applied to assess the association between periodontal status and the poor prognosis in individuals with MetS. Furthermore, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was performed to evaluate the linear and nonlinear associations between periodontal parameters, including attachment loss (AL) and probing depth (PD), and the prevalence and mortality of MetS. Results A total of 9,270 individuals were included in the analysis. Individuals with periodontitis had a higher prevalence of MetS compared to those without periodontitis (OR=1.24, 95% CI: 1.08-1.43). Cox regression analysis revealed that periodontitis was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR=2.03, 95% CI:1.40-2.92) and cardiovascular mortality (HR=2.32, 95% CI:1.05-5.10) among individuals with MetS. Furthermore, the RCS analysis demonstrated that AL had a nonlinear association with the risk of prevalence, all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in MetS (P for nonlinearity < 0.05). However, PD was linearly associated with the increased risks of these outcomes (P overall < 0.05). Conclusion Periodontitis is associated with an increased risk of MetS, as well as higher risks of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.

Abstract
Hyperactivation of osteoclasts has been identified as a significant etiological factor in several bone resorption-related disorders, including osteoporosis, periodontitis, arthritis, and bone metastasis of tumors. It has been demonstrated that the severity of these diseases is influenced by lipids that regulate osteoclast differentiation and activity through specific signaling pathways and cytokine levels. The regulatory mechanisms of different types of lipids on osteoclastogenesis vary across diverse disease contexts in bone resorption regulated by osteoclasts. This review presents an overview of the mechanisms underlying osteoclast formation and summarizes the pathways through which various lipids regulate osteoclastogenesis in different pathological contexts. We also discuss effective therapeutic strategies for osteolytic diseases based on modulation of lipid metabolism.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND AIMS The oral health characteristics of middle-aged and older adults exhibit variations. This study identifies the various factors associated with oral health among middle-aged and older adults through a subgroup analysis by age group of data representative of the South Korean population. METHODS We examined influencing factors: demographic, socioeconomic, dental, physical attributes, psychological, and mental attributes. Oral health was assessed using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index. The participants were divided into two groups: those under 65 years of age (middle-aged) and those over 65 years of age (older adults). We used multiple linear regression analysis and dominance analysis to determine the dominant factors associated with oral health. RESULTS A total of 6369 participants were aged 69.2 ± 9.8 years on average, and 57.5% were women. Dominance analysis revealed that lower educational levels and activity difficulty caused by diseases were significantly associated with both groups. Moreover, depressive symptoms were the foremost adverse factor linked to oral health in the middle-aged (P < .001, standardized beta [β] = -4.30, general dominance index [GDI] = 19.00) and older (P < .001, β = -0.30, GDI = 10.70) adults. The number of teeth exhibited the most positive association with oral health in both middle-aged (P < .001, β = 0.20, GDI = 5.30) and older (P < .001, β = 0.23, GDI = 7.40) adults. However, cognitive function, dental visits, body mass index, severe pain, functional limitations, and cognitive function exhibited distinct patterns between the age groups. CONCLUSION Depressive symptoms and the number of teeth significantly influence oral health in middle-aged and older adults, though the impact varies by age. These findings stress the importance of tailored strategies considering age-specific attributes for effective oral health improvement. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Enhancing oral health requires healthcare providers to prioritize monitoring age-specific risk factors. Further, educational plans should highlight the importance of preventive oral care and regular dental visits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The global burden and trend of severe periodontitis, as well as its association with sociodemographic development, among women of childbearing age (WCBA) have been unclear so far. This study aims to assess the epidemiological pattern of severe periodontitis in WCBA from 1990 to 2021 and provide projections through 2040. METHODS Data on the incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of severe periodontitis among WCBA from 1990 to 2021 were retrieved from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2021. The Bayesian age-period-cohort model was run to project the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) through 2040. RESULTS In 2021, an estimated 26,315,786 incident cases, 257,234,399 prevalent cases, and 1,680,425 DALYs were reported globally. From 1990 to 2021, a consistent annual increase in the age-standardized rate of severe periodontitis was observed, and the ASIR is projected to continue to rise until 2040. Additionally, the burden of severe periodontitis demonstrated a downward trend with increasing sociodemographic development. In 2021, age-specific rates of severe periodontitis increased with age, with the most significant changes occurring in younger age groups. CONCLUSION The rising global burden of severe periodontitis, along with regional and age variations, highlights the urgent need for innovative prevention and healthcare strategies to reduce this burden among WCBA globally. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY Women of childbearing age (WCBA) represent nearly a quarter of the global population, yet there is a significant gap in consistent global and regional surveillance data on severe periodontitis in this group. Our study revealed that severe periodontitis among WCBA poses a substantial public health challenge worldwide. From 1990 to 2021, the age-standardized rate of severe periodontitis increased globally, with the most significant rise observed in regions with middle socioeconomic development. This condition disproportionately affects women in their prime years, with the fastest growth seen among younger WCBA. It is essential that healthcare providers recognize the gender disparities and societal factors related to socioeconomic development that contribute to the risk of severe periodontitis in this population. To address this issue effectively, it is crucial to develop region- and age-specific prevention strategies, as well as targeted healthcare interventions.

Abstract
Introduction This study synthesizes evidence on the impact of subgingival periodontal treatment combined with antibiotics on reducing systemic inflammation markers-C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukins, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)-in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) and periodontal disease (PD), compared to supragingival periodontal treatment with placebo. Methods Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese that addressed the research question were included. A search was conducted in eight databases (PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, LILACS, Scopus, WoS Core Collection, Dentistry & Oral Science Source, and Cochrane Central) on June 20, 2023. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane RoB 2 tool, and evidence certainty was evaluated following GRADE guidelines. A qualitative synthesis of the evidence was performed. Results Two RCTs with 228 participants (ages 35-65) were included. Montero et al. reported significant reductions in CRP levels favoring the treatment group at 3 months (2.7 mg/L ± SE: 0.4 vs. 3.9 mg/L ± SE: 0.6; p = 0.001) and 6 months (2.9 mg/L ± SE: 0.4 vs. 4.0 mg/L ± SE: 0.8; p = 0.004). Lopez et al., however, found no significant differences throughout follow-up. Only Montero et al. reported on interleukin 1β and TNF-α, observing significant reductions at 3 months for interleukin 1β (0.9 pg/dl ± SE: 0.1 vs. 2.3 pg/dl ± SE: 0.5; p = 0.046) and TNF-α (6.4 pg/dl ± SE: 0.8 vs. 10.0 pg/dl ± SE: 2.3; p = 0.037). Discussion The evidence is limited by the small number of comparative RCTs. One RCT with low risk of bias demonstrated significant reductions in CRP, interleukins, and TNF-α levels at 3 months and CRP at 6 months. The other, with unclear risk of bias, showed no differences in CRP up to 12 months. Findings suggest that subgingival periodontal treatment with antibiotics reduces systemic inflammation for up to 6 months in patients with MS and PD. However, larger RCTs with standardized methods and longer follow-up are needed to confirm these results. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the oral health status of patients with obesity and to explore the socio-demographic characteristics, comorbidities, lifestyle habits (tobacco, alcohol, sweet/acidic diet), and saliva parameters most associated with the dental caries experience. Material and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 204 patients' data with obesity attending a therapeutic education programme. Caries experience (number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth [DMFT]), periodontal status, oral hygiene, occlusal tooth wear, masticatory inefficiency, and saliva parameters were recorded. RESULTS Mean DMFT was 12 ± 7 and was independently associated with age (mean 47 ± 14 years; for 1 standard deviation (SD) increase: β = 0.22, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.16-0.29), female sex (72%; β = 3.76, 95% CI = 1.65-5.87), brushing <2 times/day (35%; β = 2.86, 95% CI = 0.81-4.90), salivary buffering capacity (low [46%] vs. normal [40%]: β = 2.02, 95% CI = 0.08-3.95; very low [10%] vs. normal: β = 3.34, 95% CI = 0.31-6.37), and salivary consistency (bubbly [30%] vs. clear [57%]: β = 2.45, 95% CI = 0.52-4.38). CONCLUSIONS Improving patients' competencies for oral care, such as teeth brushing twice daily, is necessary to limit the burden of dental caries in individuals with obesity. Acting on salivary composition may also be of interest, and further studies are required to explore the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: This narrative review paper highlights the multifaceted influence of dysbiotic biofilm, genetic background, host response, and environmental factors on periodontitis. It explores the roles of type I and II diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in the progression of periodontitis, drawing insights from various empirical studies and theoretical perspectives. Methods: Relevant articles were sourced using keywords in databases like PubMed/Medline, Science Direct, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Additionally, this review examines the relationship between aMMP-8 levels and increased glycemic states, as well as varying degrees of periodontitis severity. Results: The biomarker active-matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8), produced by polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN), is highlighted as a reliable indicator of ongoing connective tissue degradation. Dysfunctions in PMN activity, accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGE), and oxidative stress aggravate the periodontal inflammatory response and complications of diabetes. Traditional diagnostics of periodontitis do not provide sufficient information about the current or future disease initiation or activity of periodontitis. Conclusions: The implications of this review point to the need for monitoring periodontal health by utilizing innovative strategies like aMMP-8 point-of-care testing, using oral rinse for screening and treatment monitoring, and harnessing the potential of supportive treatments like low-dose doxycycline and light-activated mouth rinses for restoring periodontal health. Its expression in oral fluids is a promising diagnostic tool to differentiate periodontitis from gingivitis and healthy periodontium, especially when associated with systemic diseases, fostering greater collaboration among healthcare professionals.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are major global health concerns, and they often go undetected. Periodontitis shares risk factors and is associated with both conditions. Assessing MetS risk factors among dental patients, especially those with periodontitis, may contribute to early detection and prompt treatment. However, current information about MetS prevalence rates in dental settings is limited. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the prevalence of MetS among patients with generalized periodontitis stage III/IV (GenPD), localized periodontitis stage III/IV (LocPD), and non-periodontitis controls. We also investigated the prevalence of undiagnosed T2DM in the same population. Moreover, we performed a pilot study to evaluate the possibility of measuring fructosamine levels in oral rinse samples, as an alternative to HbA1c, to screen for hyperglycemia. Methods: Periodontitis patients and non-periodontitis controls were recruited from a dental school, all aged ≥ 40 years. MetS prevalence was determined according to four different MetS definitions. T2DM prevalence was based on elevated HbA1c levels (HbA1c ≥ 7.0%). Biochemical analysis from blood was carried out by finger stick sampling. A subset of participants was asked to provide an oral rinse sample for the measurement of fructosamine, which was correlated to HbA1c from blood. Results: A total of 105 patients with periodontitis (GenPD stage III/IV: n = 44, LocPD stage III/IV: n = 61) and 88 non-periodontitis controls, with a mean age of 54.4 years, were included. The prevalence of MetS, according to four different MetS definitions, was 68.2-81.8% in GenPD patients, 42.6-62.3% in LocPD patients, and 52.3-69.3% in controls. The prevalence of T2DM, as evidenced by elevated HbA1c, was 20.5% in GenPD patients, 18.3% in LocPD patients, and 10.2% in controls (p = 0.094). A substantial number of subjects were not aware that they were being suspected to have T2DM, i.e., 13.6% in GenPD patients, 8.2% in LocPD patients, and 8.0% in controls (p = 0.335). In a subset of participants (n = 48), we found no significant correlation between HbA1c and oral fructosamine (r= 0.24, p = 0.103). Conclusions: The overall results showed a relatively high prevalence of patients with MetS and/or elevated HbA1c among periodontitis patients and controls in the dental school. Of those with suspected T2DM, a substantial number were not aware of having T2DM. Oral health care professionals could therefore contribute to early detection for T2DM and/or create awareness in patients at risk for a disease related to MetS. To date, initial results on the use of oral fructosamine as an alternative for HbA1c cast doubt, and further research is needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND AIMS Observational studies suggest an association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and periodontitis. However, observational studies are susceptible to reverse causation and confounding factors, so the causality of this association is uncertain. Causal association between compounds of MetS and periodontitis has been well studied. Using Mendelian randomisation (MR), we aimed to comprehensively evaluate the bidirectional relationship between MetS as a whole and periodontitis and provide clinical insight. METHODS We used genetic instruments from the most comprehensive genome-wide association studies of European descent for MetS (n = 291,107) as well as periodontitis from both the FinnGen consortium (n = 195,395) and GeneLifestyle Interactions in Dental Endpoints (GLIDE, n = 45,563) consortium to investigate the causal relationship between MetS and periodontitis and vice versa. We used the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method to derive the primary causal estimates and evaluated the robustness of our results with a series of sensitivity analyses. RESULTS MR analysis based on FinnGen consortium indicated a negative causal association of MetS on periodontitis (OR = 0.882, 95% CI = 0.791-0.983, P = .023), while MR analysis based on GLIDE consortium did not support a causal relation of MetS on periodontitis (OR = 0.986, 95% CI = 0.920-1.057, P = .697). These results were consistent after adjusting for potential confounding factors by multivariable MR analyses. Results from meta analysis did not support a causal association of MetS on periodontitis. Sensitivity analysis showed that there was no existence of pleiotropy. In the reverse direction, periodontitis showed no association with MetS. CONCLUSIONS Within the scope of this MR study, MetS and periodontitis are not causally related. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Further studies are needed to clarify the underlying mechanism between metabolic syndrome and periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the association between breakfast skipping and periodontitis and the mediating role of sugar and lipid metabolism and systemic inflammation in this association using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2018. METHODS This study included 11,953 participants, representing an estimated 33.9 million people. Complex sample logistic regression was used to assess the independent association between breakfast skipping and periodontitis. Subgroup analysis was conducted with modifiers including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), urban residence, education level, marital status, and diabetes. Structural equation modeling assessed potential mediation by biomarkers related to glucose and lipid metabolism along with systemic inflammation. RESULTS The fully adjusted logistic regression model indicated a positive association between breakfast skipping and periodontitis (odds ratio [OR] = 1.234 (1.026-1.483), p = 0.025). This association was highlighted in middle-aged (40-60 years), female, highly educated, married individuals with BMI < 25 kg/m2, and those in urban areas without diabetes. Blood glucose (β ± SE = 0.006 ± 0.002, p = 0.014), triglycerides (β ± SE = 0.004 ± 0.002, p = 0.033), and white blood cell count (β ± SE = 0.011 ± 0.003, p = 0.003) were identified as partial mediators. CONCLUSIONS A new, independent association between breakfast skipping, and periodontitis has been discovered, which is partially mediated by sugar and lipid metabolism, and systemic inflammation. The findings provide new insights into the benefits of chrononutrition for periodontal health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the association between periodontal disease and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among women at prior high risk for gestational diabetes with the hypothesis that women with MetS show more signs of periodontal disease than women without MetS. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 112 women from an original study cohort of 348 women at high risk of gestational diabetes were examined 4-6 years postpartum. Diagnosis of MetS was based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III diagnostic criteria. Insulin resistance was approximated by the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance. Full-mouth examinations and panoramic radiographs provided the total dental index, number of teeth, and decayed, missing, and filled teeth index. Clinical examination assessed bleeding on probing, probing depth, visible plaque index, signs of infection, and clinical attachment levels. The periodontal inflammatory burden index (PIBI) was also calculated. Information on oral health habits, symptoms, and individual opinions on oral health was collected through questionnaires. RESULTS Five years after delivery, 21% of the women had MetS, and they had more gingivitis compared to those without MetS (bleeding on probing: 52% and 44%, p = 0.011). Women with MetS tended to have more periodontitis than those without (39% and 25%, p = 0.13). A high PIBI correlated with insulin resistance (partial correlation of PIBI and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance: 0.25 p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Periodontal disease was associated with insulin resistance and MetS in women at prior high risk of developing gestational diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous research has shown that people with obesity are at a higher risk of tooth loss; however, it is unclear whether abdominal obesity (e.g., high waist circumference) is associated with tooth loss among individuals without obesity. This study aims to investigate the association between abdominal obesity and tooth loss among people who are not obese. MATERIAL AND METHODS Two cross-sectional surveys were used: the United States' National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2012 (n = 19,436) and the Scottish Health Survey (SHeS) 2008-2014 (n = 4243). Tooth loss was measured by the number of remaining teeth: 20 and over, 1-19, and edentulous. Abdominal obesity was defined by categorizing waist circumference into three levels: normal, high, and very high. Ordinal logistic regression was used to model the association between tooth loss and abdominal obesity. RESULTS For people living without obesity, abdominal obesity is associated with a higher prevalence of tooth loss, and the effect is different between women and men. For women, abdominal obesity increased the chance of tooth loss by 64% (odds ratio [OR]: 1.64, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16-2.34) in the NHANES and 196% (OR: 2.96, 95% CI: 1.47-5.97) in the SHeS. For men, abdominal obesity increased the chance of tooth loss by 41% (OR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.06-1.87) in the NHANES and 65% (OR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.02-2.73) in the SHeS. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that the prevalence of tooth loss is substantially higher in people with abdominal obesity, and this association is distinctively different between men and women. These findings suggest that those who are not obese but have abdominal obesity may be an important target population for oral health prevention strategies.

Abstract
Periodontitis leads to immunologically mediated loss of periodontium and, if untreated, can result in tooth loss. Periodontal diseases are the most prevalent in the world and have a very strong impact on patients' well-being and general health. Their treatment generates enormous costs. Given the above, precise, prompt, and predictive diagnosis of periodontal disease is of paramount importance for clinicians. The aim of the study was to summarize the state-of-the-art knowledge of molecular periodontal diagnostics and the utility of its clinical application. There is a great need to have diagnostic tests that not only describe the periodontal destruction that has occurred in the tissues but also allow clinicians to detect disease at a subclinical level before the changes occur. A test that would enable clinicians to follow the course of the disease and detect areas prone to exacerbation could be used to evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing periodontal therapies. Unfortunately, there is no such diagnostic method yet. A hopeful prospect is molecular diagnostics. There are numerous studies on biomarkers of periodontal disease. Point-of-care tests are also emerging. There are possibilities for processing large biological datasets (omics data). However, all of the above have a minor role in the overall single-patient diagnostics process. Despite advances in microbiological, molecular, and genetic research, the basis of periodontal diagnosis is still clinical examination enriched by the evaluation of radiological images.

Abstract
Aim The research examined the correlation between the weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) and periodontal disease, as well as the intermediary influence of triglyceride glucose (TyG) index-related indicators, utilizing a health examination dataset. Methods This cross-sectional study included 39,522 subjects from health check-up database of Shanghai Health and Medical Center. The WWI was determined by applying a formula that includes dividing the waist circumference (WC) by the body weight's square root. Periodontitis diagnosis followed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Academy of Periodontology (CDC/AAP) classification. The correlation between the WWI and periodontitis was investigated through multivariate logistic regression and smoothing curve fitting. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests were also performed to verify the stability of the results. A mediation analysis was conducted to quantify the direct and indirect influences mediated by the TyG-related indicators [TyG, TyG -body mass index (TyG-BMI), TyG -waist-to-height ratio (TyG-WHtR), and TyG-waist circumference (TyG-WC)]. Results Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed the positive association of WWI and periodontitis (OR=1.37, 95% CI: 1.30-1.43). Compared to those in the lowest quartile of WWI, participants in the highest quartile exhibited a 82% higher likelihood of periodontitis (OR=1.82, 95% CI: 1.69-1.96). Subgroup analysis and interaction tests revealed that this positive correlation was consistent in gender, BMI, WC, smoking, drinking, hypertension, and dyslipidemia (P for interaction > 0.05), with some variations noted by age and diabetes status (P for interaction<0.05). Mediation analysis showed that the proportions mediated by TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, and TyG-WHtR on the association of WWI and periodontitis risk were 13.13%, 6.30%, 16.46% and 19.79%, respectively. Conclusion A higher WWI in Chinese adults was linked to an increased likelihood of periodontitis, and this correlation could be partially explained by elevated levels of TyG index-related indicators.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the association between ultra-processed food (UPF) and dental caries, considering muscle mass (MM), bone mineral density (BMD), and oral hygiene habits (OHH) as mediators. This study has an analytical cross-sectional design with 2,515 adolescents (18-19 years). The main exposure - the UPF intake ratio - was established using the food frequency questionnaire. The outcome was the number of decayed teeth, according to the DMFT index. The model adjustment included socio-economic status (SES), frequency of physical activity, and concurrent risk habits (CRH) as potential confounders. Three latent variables were considered: SES (family income, economic class, household head, and adolescent education), OHH (gingival bleeding on probing index and visible plaque index), and CRH (alcohol and tobacco dependence). The analyses used structural equation modeling, estimating the standardized coefficient (SC) in three models: lumbar BMD(1), femoral BMD(2), and total BMD(3). UPF consumption had a direct (SCmodel1=0.071, SCmodel2=0.072, SCmodel3=0.071; p < 0.05) and total (SCmodel1=0.067, SCmodel2=0.068, SCmodel3=0.068; p < 0.05) effect on the number of decayed teeth. BMD and MM did not mediate the association between UPF and dental caries, but the indirect association mediated by OHH was significant in all analyses (p < 0.05). Dental Caries was explained in other specific pathways: SES→UPF→Dental Caries (SCmodel1 = 0.009, SCmodel2 = 0.008, SCmodel3 = 0.009); SES→OHH→Dental Caries (SCmodel1 = 0.033, SCmodel2 = 0.033, SCmodel3 = 0.034); CRH→UPF→Dental Caries (SCmodel1 = 0.009, SCmodel2 = 0.008, SCmodel3 = 0.008); CRH→OHH→Dental Caries (SCmodel1 = 0.029, SCmodel2 = 0.027, SCmodel3 = 0.027). Dental caries prevention should include encouraging good OHH, healthy eating, and developing equitable public policies in middle and low-income countries like Brazil.

Abstract
Periodontitis exacerbates Alzheimer's disease (AD) through multiple pathways. Both periodontitis and AD are intricately correlated to intestinal homeostasis, yet there is still a lack of direct evidence regarding whether periodontitis can regulate the progression of AD by modulating intestinal homeostasis. The current study induced experimental periodontitis in AD mice by bilaterally ligating the maxillary second molars with silk and administering Pg-LPS injections in APPswe/PS1ΔE9 (APP/PS1) mice. Behavioral tests and histological analyses of brain tissue were conducted after 8 weeks. Gut microbiota was analyzed and colon tissue were also evaluated. Then, fecal microbiota from mice with periodontitis was transplanted into antibiotic-treated mice to confirm the effects of periodontitis on AD and the potential mechanism was explored. The results indicated periodontitis exacerbated cognitive impairment and anxious behaviour in APP/PS1 mice, with increased Aβ deposition, microglial overactivation and neuroinflammation in brain. Moreover, the intestinal homeostasis of AD mice was altered by periodontitis, including affecting gut microbiota composition, causing colon inflammation and destroyed intestinal epithelial barrier. Furthermore, AD mice that underwent fecal transplantation from mice with periodontitis exhibited worsened AD progression and disrupted intestinal homeostasis. It also impaired intestinal barrier function, elevated peripheral inflammation, damaged blood-brain barrier (BBB) and caused neuroinflammation and synapses impairment. Taken together, the current study demonstrated that periodontitis could disrupt intestinal homeostasis to exacerbate AD progression potential via causing gut microbial dysbiosis, intestinal inflammation and intestinal barrier impairment to induce peripheral inflammation and damage BBB, ultimately leading to neuroinflammation and synapse impairment. It underscores the importance of maintaining both periodontal health and intestinal homeostasis to reduce the risk of AD.

Abstract
To better understand the link between periodontitis and metabolic diseases, our in vitro study aimed to assess the influence of the adipokine apelin and/or the periodontal pathogen Fusobacterium nucleatum on periodontal cells. Periodontal ligament (PDL) cells were exposed to F. nucleatum in the presence and absence of apelin. Scratch assays were used to analyze the in vitro wound healing and velocity of cell migration. To investigate if F. nucleatum and/or apelin have a regulatory effect on cell proliferation and apoptosis, proliferation and viability assays were performed as well as an analysis of caspase 9 expression. Both the in vitro wound closure and the cell migration rate were significantly reduced by F. nucleatum. Simultaneous incubation with apelin counteracted the adverse effects of F. nucleatum. The proliferation assay demonstrated that neither apelin nor F. nucleatum significantly affected PDL cell proliferation. Furthermore, neither apelin nor F. nucleatum was cytotoxic or affected apoptosis after 48 h. Apelin could play a modulatory role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis, as it was able to compensate for the inhibitory effects of the periodontal pathogen F. nucleatum on PDL cell migration in vitro.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.gingivalis) is a gram-negative bacterium found in the human oral cavity and is a recognized pathogenic bacterium associated with chronic periodontitis and systemic diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), but the roles and molecular mechanism of P.gingivalis in CKD pathogenesis are unclear. METHODS In this study, an animal model of oral P.gingivalis administration and glomerular mesangial cells (GMCs) cocultured with M1-polarized macrophages and P.gingivalis supernatant were constructed. After seven weeks of P.gingivalis gavaged, peripheral blood was collected to detect the changes in renal function. By collecting the teeth and kidneys of mice, H&E staining and IHC were used to analyze the expression of periodontal inflammatory factors in mice, PAS staining was used to analyze glomerular lesions. The supernatant of macrophages was treated with 5% P.gingivalis supernatant. H&E staining, IHC, Western blot and RT-PCR were applied to analyze renal inflammatory factors, macrophage M1 polarization, NF-κB, NLRP3 and ferroptosis changes in vitro. RESULTS We found that oral P.gingivalis administration induced CKD in mice. P.gingivalis supernatant induced macrophage polarization and inflammatory factor upregulation, which triggered the activation of the NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway and ferroptosis in GMCs. By inhibiting the NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway and ferroptosis in GMCs, cell viability and the inflammatory response were partially alleviated in vitro. CONCLUSION We demonstrated that P.gingivalis induced CKD in mice by triggering crosstalk between the NF κB/NLRP3 pathway and ferroptosis in GMCs. Overall, our study suggested that periodontitis can promote the pathogenesis of CKD in mice, which provides evidence of the importance of periodontitis therapy in the prevention and treatment of CKD. P.gingivalis promotes ferroptosis in kidneys and accelerates the progression of CKD through NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to describe the oral health status of inmates. The secondary aims were to compare recidivists with first-time offenders and also study the impact of psychoactive drugs on the oral health status. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH This retrospective study included 120 male inmates from a French prison. Data from the medical and the dental questionnaires and examinations were collected and analyzed. FINDINGS The results showed that overall, the inmates had a poor oral health despite their young age. This population was at high risk regarding caries and periodontal diseases due to sedentary behaviors, improper diet, drug, alcohol and tobacco consumption. In total, 93% of inmates had at least one decayed untreated tooth and 95% had periodontal disease. The use of psychoactive drugs seemed strongly related to oral health status degradation. However, the comparison between recidivists and first-time offenders showed few differences. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The need for periodontal and dental care is considerable in this population and increased in this environment where risk factors such as addictive behaviors and poor eating habits are common. The impact of psychoactive drugs on oral health should also be taken into consideration. SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS Unfortunately, even though strategies for the prevention and management of oral health in prisons have been put in place for some years, the results still seem insufficient. ORIGINALITY/VALUE There are still few studies that analyze the impact of this medication on oral health in prisons.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the effect of a 4-week free-sugar avoidance on periodontal parameters during periodontal therapy. METHODS Twenty-one patients with untreated periodontitis and daily free-sugar intake were allocated to a sugar avoidance group (SAG) and a control group (CG). The SAG received a 45-min dietary consultation and was instructed to avoid free sugars during the following 4 weeks after subgingival instrumentation, while the CG continued with their regular diet. Bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque control record, body weight (BW), visceral fat (FATv), and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) were collected at baseline (T1), 4 weeks (T2), and 8 weeks (T3) after subgingival instrumentation. RESULTS The main outcome parameter BOP was significantly reduced at T2 by 40.3% ± 15.54 in the SAG and 34% ± 12.47 in the CG (intra-p value both <0.001, inter-p value 0.361). A linear regression analysis of changes at patient level adjusted for age and FATv revealed a significant group difference for BOP (regression coefficient = -6.8; p = 0.019). Significant reductions were observed in BW, FATv and mean daily intake of free sugars (-14.4 g/day), and a significant increase of vitamin C derived from fruits (75.89 mg/day) at T2 in the SAG only. CONCLUSION This study may indicate additional beneficial effects of a sugar avoidance on periodontal and metabolic parameters, and nutritional intake during periodontal therapy. German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS00026699). PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY The current widespread free-sugar consumption is linked to an increasing incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases. Data indicate a relationship between sugar intake and a higher prevalence of periodontitis and increased gingival inflammation. This study showed that free-sugar avoidance after periodontal therapy had additional beneficial effects on periodontal and metabolic parameters in 10 test and 11 control patients. After 4 weeks of avoiding free sugars like sweets, processed white flour, juice, and so forth, periodontal bleeding was significantly reduced in both groups (-40.3% test group, -34% control group). Further regression analysis revealed a significant difference between groups favoring the intervention. Additionally, body weight and visceral fat were significantly reduced in the intervention group, only. To avoid sugar, patients were allowed to replace it with whole fruit, which led to increased levels of micronutrients such as vitamin C. Therefore, free-sugar avoidance may be of therapeutic benefit in addition to periodontal therapy. Further research is needed to investigate this effect in larger cohorts.

Abstract
PURPOSE To verify the effect and mechanism of baicalein in the treatment of periodontitis through network pharmacology, molecular docking and in vitro experiments. METHODS Firstly, multiple databases were used to predict targets of baicalein and periodontitis. And the screened key target genes of baicalein for treating periodontitis were subjected to GO and KEGG analysis; then these targets were analyzed by molecular docking techniques. In vitro experiments including CCK-8, RT-qPCR, ELISA and Immunofluorescence were conducted to validate the efficacy of baicalein in treating periodontitis. RESULTS Seventeen key targets were screened from the databases, GO and KEGG analysis of these targets revealed that baicalein may exert therapeutic effects through regulating TNF, PI3K-Akt, HIF-1 and other signaling pathways. Molecular docking analysis showed that baicalein has good binding potential to several targets. In vitro cellular assays showed that baicalein inhibited the expression of TNF-α, MMP-9, IL-6 and MCP1 in P.g-LPS-induced macrophages at both the mRNA and protein level. And the immunofluorescence intensity of iNOS, a marker of M1 type macrophages, which mainly secretes inflammatory factors, was significantly reduced. CONCLUSION Baicalein has the characteristics and advantages of "multicomponent, multitarget, and multipathway" in the treatment of periodontitis. In vitro cellular assays further confirmed the inhibitory effect of baicalein on the secretion of inflammatory factors of macrophages in periodontitis models, providing a theoretical basis for further study of the material basis and molecular mechanism of baicalein in the treatment of periodontal diseases.

Abstract
Stroke represents a significant global health burden, with a substantial impact on mortality, morbidity, and long-term disability. The examination of stroke biomarkers, particularly the oral microbiome, offers a promising avenue for advancing our understanding of the factors that contribute to stroke risk and for developing strategies to mitigate that risk. This review highlights the significant correlations between oral diseases, such as periodontitis and caries, and the onset of stroke. Periodontal pathogens within the oral microbiome have been identified as a contributing factor in the exacerbation of risk factors for stroke, including obesity, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and endothelial dysfunction. The alteration of the oral microbiome may contribute to these conditions, emphasizing the vital role of oral health in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. The integration of dental and medical health practices represents a promising avenue for enhancing stroke prevention efforts and improving patient outcomes.

Abstract
AIMS Periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are highly prevalent non-communicable diseases, sharing an inflammatory pathogenesis and common risk factors. The objective of the present research is to assess the association between periodontitis and cardiovascular disease risk in a representative sample of the Spanish-employed population. METHODS Cross-sectional data were obtained between 2008 and 2011 in the Workers' Oral Health (WORALTH) epidemiological study. Periodontal examinations were based on the evaluation of clinical attachment loss (CAL) and community periodontal index (CPI). Participants also underwent a medical check-up and answered a comprehensive health questionnaire. With this information, participants were categorized into three levels of CVD risk using the systemic coronary risk estimation (SCORE) algorithm for low-risk European countries. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were determined with multiple logistic regression models for the association between periodontal status and CVD risk. RESULTS Data from 4224 individuals were analyzed. The overall prevalence of high CVD risk (SCORE ≥ 5%) was 5.1%. The prevalence of SCORE ≥ 5% was 3.4%, 9.4%, and 15.2% for CAL 0-3 mm, 4-5 mm, and ≥6 mm, respectively (p < .001), and 6.2%, 6.5%, and 14.6% for CPI ≤2, 3, and 4, respectively (p < .001). Individuals with CPI = 4 presented an OR of 1.50 (95% confidence interval, CI [1.04; 2.17]) for high SCORE values, after adjusting for confounders (age, sex, and smoking habit). CONCLUSIONS Periodontitis, defined by the presence of deep periodontal pockets (≥6 mm), was significantly associated with high CVD risk (SCORE ≥ 5%) in a representative sample of the employed population in Spain.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the levels of serum, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), and salivary adipokines and their possible relationship with periodontitis and obesity. An electronic search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed/ Medline, Scopus, and EBSCOhost through February 2023. Two independent reviewers screened the titles, abstracts, and full text of all the studies. Studies comparing the levels of adipokines in GCF, serum, and/or saliva in subjects with obesity and periodontitis (group 1), subjects with normal weight and periodontitis (group 2), and subjects with obesity and gingival health (group 3) were included. Meta-analyses and meta-regression were performed on the data from included studies. Seventeen studies with study participants ranging from 30 to 120 were included with subjects in each group ranging from 10 to 40. There was a significant increase in levels of serum TNF-α, leptin, IL-6, and CRP between groups 1 and 2 (p < .05). In GCF, TNF-α and resistin levels were significantly higher (p < .05) in Group 1 vs. 2. Serum level of leptin was higher for group 1 vs. 3 (p < .05). Meta-regression analysis revealed that the obesity definition (body mass index (BMI) cut-off value >25 or >30) was significant for serum resistin (p < .05) and GCF resistin (p < .05) between group 1 and 2. The current analysis indicates that both periodontitis and obesity can modulate the pro-inflammatory cytokines at systemic and local levels. This bidirectional interaction of periodontitis and obesity via the inflammation pathway seems likely plausible. Further studies are required to elucidate this mechanism in more detail.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the association between life-course body silhouette changes and oral conditions in adulthood. METHODS At study recruitment (2008-2012), 5430 adults underwent a full-mouth clinical examination and recalled their body silhouettes at ages 8, 15, 25, 35 and 45. Life-course trajectories of body silhouettes were computed using group-based trajectory modelling. Gingival inflammation, dental plaque, masticatory units, numbers of healthy, missing, decayed and filled teeth at study recruitment were clustered. The associations between body silhouette trajectories and clusters of oral conditions were assessed by multinomial logistic regression. RESULTS The final analysis included 4472 participants. Five body silhouette trajectories were established: lean-stable (30.0%), lean-increased (19.3%), moderate stable (18.1%), lean-marked increased (25.8%) and heavy stable (6.7%). Three clusters of oral conditions were identified: optimal oral health and preserved masticatory capacity (70.0%, cluster 1), moderate oral health and moderately impaired masticatory capacity (25.4%, cluster 2) and poor oral health and severely impaired masticatory capacity (4.7%, cluster 3). Participants with a lean-increased trajectory were 58% more likely than those with a lean-stable trajectory to be in cluster 3 (aOR 1.58 [95% CI 1.07; 2.35]) relative to cluster 1, independently of covariates measured at study recruitment and including age, sex, smoking, socioeconomic status, BMI, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cholesterol and triglycerides. CONCLUSIONS A life-course lean-increased body silhouette trajectory is associated with higher likelihood of poor oral health and severely impaired masticatory capacity in adulthood.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review investigated the clinical efficacy of motivational interviewing (MI) in improving oral hygiene and periodontal health in patients with periodontal diseases. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was conducted across various databases up to May 2023. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of MI on periodontal conditions in patients with gingivitis, periodontitis, and peri‑implantitis were included. After data screening, a risk-of-bias assessment was performed using the Cochrane risk of bias (RoB) tool. The meta-analysis was performed using random-effects models. RESULTS Out of 2108 records screened, 7 RCTs involving 474 patients were included in the qualitative synthesis, with 6 of these studies included in the meta-analysis. Amongst these, 5 studies had a high RoB and 2 had some concerns about bias. Although individual studies reported varied results regarding the effects of MI on different periodontal indices and parameters at different time points, the pooled results revealed no significant difference in the overall effect on plaque level, bleeding on probing, and gingival inflammation between the MI and control groups. In addition, there is insufficient evidence to suggest any significant effect on attachment loss or probing depth. CONCLUSIONS The current evidence is insufficient to support the effectiveness of MI as an adjunctive intervention for improving oral hygiene and periodontal outcomes. However, these results should be interpreted with caution. Additional high-quality studies with standardised MI interventions are required to derive definite conclusions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to explore the associations between triglyceride glucose (TyG) index-related obesity indices and periodontitis within the American population. METHODS This cross-sectional investigation utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for 2009-2014. The association between the TyG-waist-to-height ratio (TyG-WHtR), TyG-weight-adjusted-waist index (TyG-WWI), TyG-waist circumference (TyG-WC), or TyG-body mass index (TyG-BMI) and periodontitis was investigated utilizing multivariable logistic regression model, subgroup, and dose-response curve analyses. RESULTS This study enrolled 4,808 adult participants. Except for TyG-BMI, which did not exhibit a relationship with periodontitis, TyG-WHtR, [odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval (CI))] = 2.83 [1.58-5.10], P = 0.002], TyG-WWI [OR (95% CI) = 7.50 (3.06-18.34), P < 0.001], and TyG-WC [OR (95% CI) = 2.12 (1.23-3.64), P = 0.011] were all associated with periodontitis. Participants in the highest quartile displayed an elevated risk of periodontitis relative to their counterparts in the lowest quartile, as evidenced for TyG-WWI [OR (95% CI) = 1.72 (1.26-2.33), P = 0.001] and TyG-WC [OR (95% CI) = 1.50 (1.13-1.99), P = 0.009] in the full adjustment model. Subgroup analyses suggested more pronounced positive associations between these indices and periodontitis in participants who were < 60 years old, had a BMI ≥ 25, and did not have diabetes. The dose-response curve indicated linear responses in these associations. CONCLUSIONS This investigation identified a significant and stable association between TyG-WHtR, TyG-WWI, or TyG-WC and periodontitis, which implies a robust correlation between high insulin resistance and susceptibility to periodontitis in the American population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the association among salivary biomarkers, periodontal inflammation, and adiposity status in adolescents. METHODS This study included 180 Hong Kong adolescents aged 12-15 years. Anthropometric measurements including central obesity surrogate, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and dental examinations were conducted. The participants were classified into four groups as follows: with normal WHtR and less extensive periodontal inflammation (NW+LP); with high WHtR and less extensive periodontal inflammation (HW+LP); with normal WHtR and more extensive periodontal inflammation (NW+P); and with high WHtR and more extensive periodontal inflammation (HW+P). Saliva were collected to measure salivary physicochemical parameters, total bacterial load, and levels of protein biomarkers including secretory phospholipase A2 group IIA (sPLA2-IIA) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Data were analysed by Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman correlation coefficient. RESULTS Salivary IL-6 levels and sPLA2-IIA and IL-6 output differed significantly between groups (P = 0.041, 0.027, and 0.043, respectively). The NW+P group had significantly higher salivary IL-6 output than the NW+LP group (P = 0.034) and significantly lower salivary sPLA2-IIA output than the HW+LP group (P = 0.038). Salivary IL-6 levels were negatively correlated with the number of sextants with healthy gingivae and positively correlated with salivary sPLA2-IIA levels in participants with normal WHtR. Salivary sPLA2-IIA levels were negatively correlated with total salivary bacterial load in participants with high WHtR. CONCLUSIONS Salivary IL-6 levels were associated with the extent of periodontal inflammation in participants with normal WHtR but not in those with high WHtR. Adolescents with different adiposity status may have different mechanisms of periodontal inflammation. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Investigating salivary biomarkers of periodontal health holds potential benefits in identifying individuals at risk and customizing oral health promotion strategies for individuals with varying levels of adiposity, even as early as adolescence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to examine the association between the Weight-adjusted Waist Circumference Index (WWI) and the prevalence of periodontitis, providing novel evidence on the link between central obesity and periodontal health. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with 10,289 participants enrolled from NHANES 2009 to 2014. WWI was calculated by dividing waist circumference by the square root of weight. We employed a multivariate logistic regression model and smoothed curve fitting method to evaluate the relationship between WWI and periodontitis. We also compared different subgroups and analyzed the interaction effects. RESULTS A significant positive association between WWI and periodontitis was observed in 10,289 participants aged ≥30 (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.12-1.28). Upon categorizing WWI into quartiles, the top quartile group exhibited a 27% increased prevalence of periodontitis compared to the bottom quartile (OR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.10-1.46; P for trend = 0.001). Among individuals aged 30 to 60, the strength of this positive correlation is more pronounced than in those aged 60 and above. CONCLUSIONS WWI demonstrates a positive correlation with periodontitis with a particularly pronounced impact on moderate periodontitis, suggesting its potential to improve periodontitis prevention in a broad population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontitis is strongly associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) that results in serious complications and mortality. However, the pathogenic role of periodontitis in the development of T2D and the underlain mechanism have not been fully elucidated. METHODS A Mendelian randomization (MR) was performed to estimate the causality between two diseases. Bioinformatics tools, including gene ontology and pathway enrichment analyses, were employed to analyze the common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in periodontitis and T2D. MR and colocalization analyses were then utilized to investigate the causal associations between potential pathogenic gene expression and the risk of T2D. Single cell-type expression analysis was further performed to detect the cellular localization of these genes. RESULTS Genetically predicted periodontitis was associated with a higher risk of T2D (OR, 1.469; 95% CI, 1.117-1.930; P = 0.006) and insulin resistance (OR 1.034; 95%CI 1.001-1.068; P = 0.041). 79 common DEGs associated with periodontitis and T2D were then identified and demonstrated enrichment mainly in CXC receptor chemokine receptor binding and interleutin-17 signaling pathway. The integration of GWAS with the expression quantitative trait locis of these genes from the peripheral blood genetically prioritized 6 candidate genes, including 2 risk genes (RAP2A, MCUR1) and 4 protective genes (WNK1, NFIX, FOS, PANX1) in periodontitis-related T2D. Enriched in natural killer cells, RAP2A (OR 4.909; 95% CI 1.849-13.039; P = 0.001) demonstrated high risk influence on T2D, and exhibited strong genetic evidence of colocalization (coloc.abf-PPH4 = 0.632). CONCLUSIONS This study used a multi-omics integration method to explore causality between periodontitis and T2D, and revealed molecular mechanisms using bioinformatics tools. Periodontitis was associated with a higher risk of T2D. MCUR1, RAP2A, FOS, PANX1, NFIX and WNK1 may play important roles in the pathogenesis of periodontitis-related T2D, shedding light on the development of potential drug targets.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is important in individuals with metabolic syndrome components (MetS), and periodontitis may play an important role in this process. This study aims to evaluate the association between periodontitis and ASCVD in participants with the components of MetS, including obesity, dysglycemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study conducted followed the MOOSE reporting guidelines and the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. EMBASE, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PubMed and OpenGrey were searched for observational studies about the linkage of periodontitis to ASCVD in people with MetS components up to April 9, 2023. Cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies were included after study selection. Quality evaluation was carried out using the original and modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale as appropriate. Random-effects model was employed for meta-analysis. RESULTS Nineteen studies were finally included in the quality analysis, and all of them were assessed as moderate to high quality. Meta-analyses among fifteen studies revealed that the participants with periodontitis were more likely to develop ASCVD in those who have dysglycemia (RR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.13-1.37; p < 0.05), obesity (RR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.02-1.24; p < 0.05), dyslipidemia (RR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.13-1.65; p < 0.05), or hypertension (1.20, 95% CI = 1.05-1.36; p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Periodontitis promotes the development of ASCVD in participants with one MetS component (obesity, dysglycemia, hypertension or dyslipidemia). CLINICAL RELEVANCE In people with MetS components, periodontitis may contribute to the ASCVD incidence.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease, which leads to gradual degradation of alveolar bone. The challenges persist in achieving effective alveolar bone repair due to the unique bacterial microenvironment's impact on immune responses. This study explores a novel approach utilizing Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) (comprising magnesium and gallic acid) for promoting bone regeneration in periodontitis, which focuses on the physiological roles of magnesium ions in bone repair and gallic acid's antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties. However, the dynamic oral environment and irregular periodontal pockets pose challenges for sustained drug delivery. A smart responsive hydrogel system, integrating Carboxymethyl Chitosan (CMCS), Dextran (DEX) and 4-formylphenylboronic acid (4-FPBA) was designed to address this problem. The injectable self-healing hydrogel forms a dual-crosslinked network, incorporating the MOF and rendering its on-demand release sensitive to reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and pH levels of periodontitis. We seek to analyze the hydrogel's synergistic effects with MOFs in antibacterial functions, immunomodulation and promotion of bone regeneration in periodontitis. In vivo and in vitro experiment validated the system's efficacy in inhibiting inflammation-related genes and proteins expression to foster periodontal bone regeneration. This dynamic hydrogel system with MOFs, shows promise as a potential therapeutic avenue for addressing the challenges in bone regeneration in periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There may be an association between obesity and periodontitis, yet no studies have investigated the correlation between the new obesity indicator, the weight-adjusted-waist Index (WWI), and periodontitis. OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the association between the novel obesity index, weight-adjusted-waist index, and periodontitis. SUBJECTS AND METHODS WWI was utilized to assess obesity, through measuring waist circumference (WC) and body weight. We analyzed cross-sectional NHANES data from 2009 to 2014 (1) using multivariate logistic regression to explore WWI's association with moderate/severe periodontitis; (2) conducting subgroup analyses and interaction tests; and (3) fitting smoothed curves to the age-stratified logistic regression model. RESULTS The study involved 11,256 individuals, with 48.55% having moderate/severe periodontitis. Upon adjusting for all relevant variables, a significant correlation between WWI and moderate/severe periodontitis was observed (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.01-1.17). Compared to the lowest quartile of WWI, there was a significant increase in the likelihood of moderate/severe periodontitis in Quartile 2 (OR = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.06-1.39) and Quartile 3 (OR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.07-1.42). Subgroup analyses for gender, age, education, smoking, and diabetes highlighted a positive association between WWI and moderate/severe periodontitis in all subgroups, except for the diabetic population and individuals aged 65 years and older. CONCLUSION The analysis revealed a positive correlation between WWI, a novel obesity index, and moderate/severe periodontitis prevalence through diverse modeling approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Widespread exposure to phthalates may raise the probability of various diseases. However, the association of phthalate metabolites with periodontitis remains unclear. METHODS Totally 3402 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009 to 2014 cycles were enrolled in the cross-sectional investigation. We utilized weighted logistic regression to evaluate the association of ten phthalate metabolites with periodontitis. Restricted cubic spline analysis was applied to investigate potential nonlinear relationships. RESULTS The weighted prevalence of periodontitis in the study was 42.37%. A one standard deviation (SD) rise in log-transformed levels of mono-2-ethyl-5-carboxypenty phthalate (MECPP), mono-n-butyl phthalate (MnBP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHHP), mono-isobutyl phthalate (MiBP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP), and mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) was associated with higher odds of periodontitis, with odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 1.08 (1.02-1.14), 1.07 (1.02-1.11), 1.10 (1.05-1.15), 1.05 (1.01-1.09), 1.09 (1.04-1.14), and 1.08 (1.03-1.13), respectively. Individuals with the highest quartile concentrations of MECPP, MnBP, MEHHP, MEOHP, and MBzP were associated with 32%, 20%, 30%, 25%, and 26% increased odds of periodontitis, respectively, compared to those with the lowest quartile. Additionally, mono-(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate (MCPP) demonstrated an interesting inverted J-shaped relationship with periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate an association of certain phthalate metabolites with periodontitis among US adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluated the mediating role of systemic inflammation in the association between exposure to heavy metals and periodontitis in a nationwide sample of adults. METHODS Pooled cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2009-2014) were used (n = 8993). Periodontitis was defined by a full-mouth examination and classified as no/mild and moderate/severe (mod/sev) groups. Blood and urinary heavy metal levels were investigated, including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg). In addition, systemic inflammation was assessed using circulatory leukocyte counts and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. RESULTS Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed the positive associations of blood and urinary levels of Cd and Pb with mod/sev periodontitis. In contrast,blood Hg levels did not show a significant association. The odds of having periodontitis were 1.233 and 1.311 times higher for each one-unit increment in Ln-transformed blood Cd (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.109-1.371) and Pb (95% CI: 1.170-1.470), respectively. Mediation analysis suggested a 6.3% to 11.5% contribution of leucocyte counts in the association of blood Cd and Pb levels with periodontitis. Sensitivity analyses for urinary Cd levels yielded consistent mediating effects. However, no significant mediating effect of CRP was detected. CONCLUSION Higher exposures to Cd and Pb were positively associated with periodontitis risk. These associations might be partially mediated by the elevated levels of leukocytes rather than CRP. Further longitudinal studies are needed to elucidate the discordant results of the systemic inflammatory biomarkers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Thy-1 (CD90) is a glycosylphosphatidyl-anchored protein belonging to the immunoglobulin family and is known to control mesenchymal stromal cells differentiation into osteoblasts or adipocytes. The study aimed to investigate the salivary levels of Thy-1 in health, periodontitis, obesity, and any potential association. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-one participants were divided into four groups: healthy (H), subjects with periodontitis (P), obese individuals (O), and obese individuals having periodontitis (PO). Unstimulated whole saliva was collected from participants who were evaluated for periodontal parameters. The levels of Thy-1 were measured with a commercially available ELISA kit. The data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS A significant difference in salivary Thy-1 levels among different groups was observed. Periodontitis patients had the maximum, and obese individuals had the minimum Thy-1 levels. Significant differences between H and P, H and PO, P and O, and O and PO were observed. Overall correlations between Thy-1 and periodontal parameters and a positive correlation with pocket depth in group PO were noted. CONCLUSION Thy-1 could be detected in the saliva of all study participants. It is implied that a local inflammatory condition like periodontitis elevates the salivary levels of Thy-1 with, and without obesity.

Abstract
Increasing evidence support the association between the oral microbiome and human systemic diseases. This association may be attributed to the ability of many oral microbes to influence the inflammatory microenvironment. Herein, we focused our attention on the bidirectional relationship between periodontitis and type 2 diabetes using high-resolution whole metagenomic shotgun analysis to explore the composition and functional profile of the subgingival microbiome in diabetics and non-diabetics subjects with different periodontal conditions. In the present study, the abundance of metabolic pathways encoded by oral microbes was reconstructed from the metagenome, and we identified a set of dysregulated metabolic pathways significantly enriched in the periodontitis and/or diabetic patients. These pathways were mainly involved in branched and aromatic amino acids metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis and adipocytokine signaling pathways, ferroptosis and iron homeostasis, nucleotide metabolism, and finally in the peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharides synthesis. Overall, the results of the present study provide evidence in favor of the hypothesis that during the primary inflammatory challenge, regardless of whether it is induced by periodontitis or diabetes, endotoxemia and/or the release of inflammatory cytokines cause a change in precursor and/or in circulating innate immune cells. Dysbiosis and inflammation, also via oral-gut microbiome axis or adipose tissue, reduce the efficacy of the host immune response, while fueling inflammation and can induce that metabolic/epigenetic reprogramming of chromatin accessibility of genes related to the immune response. Moreover, the presence of an enhanced ferroptosis and an imbalance in purine/pyrimidine metabolism provides new insights into the role of ferroptotic death in this comorbidity.

Abstract
Background/purpose It is unclear about whether the oral health has impact on physical performance. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between oral health and physical performance in 300 military adults in Taiwan. Materials and methods Oral health was assessed by the presence of periodontitis and dental caries. The status of cardiorespiratory and muscular endurance capacity was respectively assessed by tertiles of time for a 3000-m run and 2-min push-up numbers. Multivariable logistic and linear regression analyses with adjustments for age, smoking, alcohol drinking, blood pressure, anthropometric variables, lipid profile, fasting glucose and physical activity were used to determine the association. Results Participants with periodontitis were more likely to have worse 3000-m running performance classified in the lowest tertile [odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval: 1.94 (1.03, 3.66)]. Participants with any dental caries were more likely to have worse push-ups performance classified in the lowest tertile [OR: 2.50 (1.27, 4.92)]. In linear regression analyses, dental caries numbers were inversely correlated with 2-min push-ups numbers [β = -1.04 (-2.07, -0.01)]. Conclusion This study suggests that oral health is crucial to maintain physical fitness, and dental caries and periodontitis may affect differently on aerobic and muscular endurance capacities.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease closely associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) involvement. Eliminating ROS to control the periodontal microenvironment and alleviate the inflammatory response could potentially serve as an efficacious therapy for periodontitis. Melatonin (MT), renowned for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics, is frequently employed as an ROS scavenger in inflammatory diseases. However, the therapeutic efficacy of MT remains unsatisfactory due to the low water solubility and poor bioavailability. Carbon dots have emerged as a promising and innovative nanomaterial with facile synthesis, environmental friendliness, and low cost. In this study, melatonin-derived carbon dots (MT-CDs) were successfully synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The MT-CDs have good water solubility and biocompatibility and feature excellent ROS-scavenging capacity without additional modification. The in vitro experiments proved that MT-CDs efficiently regulated intracellular ROS, which maintained mitochondrial homeostasis and suppressed the production of inflammatory mediators. Furthermore, findings from the mouse model of periodontitis indicated that MT-CDs significantly inhibited the deterioration of alveolar bone and reduced osteoclast activation and inflammation, thereby contributing to the regeneration of damaged tissue. In terms of the mechanism, MT-CDs may scavenge ROS, thereby preventing cellular damage and the production of inflammatory factors by regulating the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) pathway. The findings will offer a vital understanding of the advancement of secure and effective ROS-scavenging platforms for more biomedical applications.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by plaque biofilm which shares risk factors with systemic chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. Many studies have found increased prevalence and rate of progression of periodontal disease in children with common metabolic disorders. Although the causal relationship and specific mechanism between them has not been determined yet. The aim of this paper is to progress on the impact of metabolic disorders on periodontal health in children and the underlying mechanisms, which provides new evidences for the prevention and intervention of metabolic disorders and periodontitis in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study investigated the association of periodontitis with the metabolic status and hepatic function in pregnant women. MATERIALS AND METHODS Full-mouth periodontal conditions, metabolic profiles, and hepatic function were assessed in 219 self-reported healthy pregnant females. The association of periodontal status with the systemic parameters was evaluated by parametric and non-parametric tests, and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Overall, periodontal status was positively associated with the metabolic profiles and hepatic function test results. The subjects with periodontitis exhibited higher levels of body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.01) and serum aspartate transaminase (AST) (p < 0.05), elevated diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (p < 0.05), and lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < 0.05) than those of the counterparts. The periodontitis severity was strongly correlated with BMI and AST levels, and the extent of periodontal inflammation was related to DBP (p < 0.01). The periodontitis patients at 34-36 gestational weeks showed higher blood pressure and AST levels than those of non-periodontitis subjects (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings on the notable links of periodontitis to concurrent metabolic disorders and abnormal liver function in pregnant women highlight the need of proactive integration of regular periodontal screening and healthcare in maternal programs for promoting optimal health and wellbeing of mothers-to-be and newborns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A positive association between obesity based on body mass index (BMI) and periodontitis has been reported. Fat tissue-related systemic inflammation acts as the link to periodontal comorbidities of obesity. However, the BMI is unable to distinguish fat and fat-free tissues. More precise measures are required to evaluate body composition, including fat and fat-free tissues. This study aimed to determine the sex differences in the association between dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-measured body composition (i.e., fat mass and muscle mass) and phenotypes with periodontitis. METHODS Cross-sectional data of 3892 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study 2011‒2014 were analyzed. Adiposity indices (fat mass index [FMI] and percentage body fat [%BF]) and muscle mass index (MMI) were calculated. The participants were categorized by the quintiles of FMI, MMI, and %BF. Body composition phenotypes were categorized as: low adiposity-low muscle (LA-LM), low adiposity-high muscle (LA-HM), high adiposity-low muscle (HA-LM), or high adiposity-high muscle (HA-HM), respectively. Periodontitis was defined by the CDC/AAP (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/American Academy of Periodontology) criteria. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted, stratified by sex. We further adjusted for white blood cell (WBC) counts in the sensitivity analysis. RESULTS Restricted cubic splines revealed non-linear associations between body composition indices and periodontitis risk. Women with a higher FMI (odds ratio for Q5 vs. Q1 [ORQ5vs1] = 1.787, 95% confidence interval: 1.209-2.640) or %BF (ORQ5vs1 = 2.221, 1.509-3.268) had increased odds of periodontitis. In addition, women with HA-LM phenotype were more likely to develop periodontitis (OR = 1.528, 1.037-2.252). Interestingly, the WBC count, a systemic inflammatory biomarker, attenuated these associations. No statistically significant associations were found in men. CONCLUSIONS The association between DXA-measured body composition and phenotypes with periodontitis differs per sex. Only in women higher adiposity indices and HA-LM phenotype were associated with an increased risk of periodontitis.

Purpose of Review
Currently, periodontal disease is the sixth most prevalent disease in the world. Emerging evidence suggests the possibility of pre-historic humans having relatively low occurrences of oral diseases, particularly periodontitis when compared to modern humans. In this review, we look back into the history of Homo sapiens and explore the emerging scientific literature to discuss the evolution of the human oral microbiota and the prevalence of periodontitis from pre-historic to modern times.
Recent Findings
Most of the scientific literature points to a more health-associated, eubiotic oral microbiota and a seemingly lower prevalence of periodontitis in pre-historic humans compared to modern times. The oral microbiome has evolved along with humans. Humans of the contemporary era are exposed to a far greater number of risk factors for periodontal disease. Also, major lifestyle changes induced by the agricultural revolution and the industrial revolution have led to the development of a more dysbiotic oral microbiota and a rise in the prevalence of periodontitis in modern humans.
Summary
An understanding of the prevalence of periodontitis across human history, the evolution of the oral microbiota, and the factors that influenced its nature and complexity helps identify and modify the disease-associated lifestyle factors acquired through modernization to manage the common worldwide problem of periodontitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate changes in salivary flow rates, buffering capacity, and salivary chromogranin A (CHGA) levels in adults undergoing bariatric surgery (BS) compared with a non-obese control group. MATERIALS AND METHODS Salivary analyses were performed on 62 participants aged over 50 years, stratified into two groups matched for age and gender-individuals who had undergone bariatric surgery (BS) (n = 31) and a corresponding healthy control group (n = 31). Before saliva collection, participants completed a comprehensive 11-point visual numerical rating scale (NRS 0-10) xerostomia questionnaire, assessing subjective perceptions of two key aspects: dryness of the oral mucosa and resultant impact on oral functional ability. Three distinct saliva measurements were obtained: unstimulated whole saliva (UWS), stimulated whole saliva (SWS), and unstimulated upper labial saliva (ULS). The buffering capacity of unstimulated saliva was assessed using pH indicator strips, and concentrations of salivary Chromogranin A (CHGA) were quantified in stimulated saliva via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS After BS, more than 40% of BS group patients reported xerostomia, with 16.1% experiencing only mild symptoms without significant functional impact (p = 0.009). The prevalence of xerostomia and tongue dryness was higher in the BS group compared to the control group (p = 0.028 and p = 0.025, respectively). The comparative analysis unveiled no statistically significant differences in flow rates of unstimulated upper labial saliva (ULS), unstimulated whole saliva (UWS), and stimulated whole saliva (SWS) between the control group and patients who underwent bariatric surgery. However, in patients undergone BS with xerostomia, both ULS and UWS flow rates were significantly lower than in controls with xerostomia (p = 0.014 and p = 0.007, respectively). The buffering capacity was significantly lower in patients undergone BS than in controls (p = 0.009). No differences were found between groups regarding CHGA concentration and output values, nevertheless, higher values of CHGA concentrations were significantly correlated to lower flow rates. CONCLUSION According to the results, this study suggests that individuals undergoing BS may exhibit altered salivary buffering capacity and reduced unstimulated salivary flows in the presence of xerostomia. Additionally, the findings suggest that elevated concentration of salivary CHGA might be associated, in part, with salivary gland hypofunction. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The clinical significance of this study lies in highlighting the changes in salivary functions after BS. The identified salivary alterations might be attributed to adverse effects of BS such as vomiting, gastroesophageal reflux, and dehydration. Understanding these changes is crucial for healthcare professionals involved in the care of post-BS patients, as it sheds light on potential oral health challenges that may arise as a consequence of the surgical intervention. Monitoring and managing these salivary alterations can contribute to comprehensive patient care and enhance the overall postoperative experience for individuals undergoing BS.

Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most common microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus. Periodontitis (PD) is a microbially-induced chronic inflammatory disease that is thought to have a bidirectional relationship with diabetes mellitus. DN and PD are recognized as models associated with accelerated aging. This study is divided into two parts, the first of which explores the bidirectional causal relationship through Mendelian randomization (MR). The second part aims to investigate the relationship between PD and DN in terms of potential crosstalk genes, aging-related genes, biological pathways, and processes using bioinformatic methods. MR analysis showed no evidence to support a causal relationship between DN and PD (P = 0.34) or PD and DN (P = 0.77). Using the GEO database, we screened 83 crosstalk genes overlapping in two diseases. Twelve paired genes identified by Pearson correlation and the four hub genes in the key cluster were jointly evaluated as key crosstalk-aging genes. Using support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) and maximal clique centrality (MCC) algorithms, feature selection established five genes as the key crosstalk-aging genes. Based on five key genes, an ANN diagnostic model with reliable diagnosis of two diseases was developed. Gene enrichment analysis indicates that AGE-RAGE pathway signaling, the complement system, and multiple immune inflammatory pathways may be involved in common features of both diseases. Immune infiltration analysis reveals that most immune cells are differentially expressed in PD and DN, with dendritic cells and T cells assuming vital roles in both diseases. Overall, although there is no causal link, CSF1R, CXCL6, VCAM1, JUN and IL1B may be potential crosstalk-aging genes linking PD and DN. The common pathways and markers explored in this study could contribute to a deeper understanding of the common pathogenesis of both diseases in the context of aging and provide a theoretical basis for future research.

Abstract
Objectives To investigate the association of salivary and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) biomarkers with periodontal status and obesity in children and adolescents. Data/sources A literature search up to July 2023 was conducted through PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, ProQuest Medical Database, ProQuest SciTech Premium Collection, and the Cochrane Library. Observational studies comparing salivary and GCF biomarkers in children and adolescents with compromised periodontal status and/or obesity were included for data extraction. A meta-analysis was performed to estimate the overall standardised mean difference. Study selection Fifteen observational studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this systematic review. Meta-analysis was only applicable in synthesising the dyadic relationship between GCF biomarkers and obesity. The results demonstrated that children and adolescents with obesity had significantly higher GCF levels of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (SMD:0.56; 95% CI:0.07, 1.04), adiponectin (SMD:0.33; 95% CI:0.06, 0.60), leptin (SMD:0.52; 95% CI:0.15, 0.90), and interleukin-1 beta (SMD:0.71; 95% CI:0.44, 0.99) than those with normal weight. Conclusion To date, no study has well addressed the triadic association between salivary or GCF biomarkers, periodontal status, and obesity among children and adolescents. Further in-depth, high-quality studies are required to investigate these associations. Clinical significance Periodontal disease and obesity are growing public health crises worldwide. Their relationship has been intensively studied. Investigating the salivary or GCF biomarkers alterations could help better understand the relationship between periodontal disease and obesity, which would assist in tailoring future oral health promotion programs.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is a key pathogen of periodontitis. Increasing evidence shows that P. gingivalis signals to mitochondria in periodontal cells, including gingival epithelial cells, gingival fibroblast cells, immune cells, etc. Mitochondrial dysfunction affects the cellular state and participates in periodontal inflammatory response through the aberrant release of mitochondrial contents. In the current review, it was summarized that P. gingivalis induced mitochondrial dysfunction by altering the mitochondrial metabolic state, unbalancing mitochondrial quality control, prompting mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and regulating mitochondria-mediated apoptosis. This review outlines the impacts of P. gingivalis and its virulence factors on the mitochondrial function of periodontal cells and their role in periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have demonstrated the impact of beverage consumption on overall health and oral health. Specifically, high consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and coffee has been associated with an increased risk of metabolic disorders and periodontitis. Conversely, high intake of plain water has been linked to various health benefits, including weight management and reduced energy intake. However, no previous studies have explored the potential association between plain water intake and the risk of periodontitis. OBJECTIVES Our objective was to investigate the relationship between plain water consumption and periodontitis in a middle-aged and elderly population. METHODS The present cross-sectional study was conducted among participants aged ≥ 45 in the 2009-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Multivariable regression analysis, subgroup analysis and smooth fitting tests were conducted to explore the independent relationship between plain water intake and periodontitis. RESULTS A total of 5,882 participants were enrolled,62.02% have periodontitis. Periodontitis patients have lower plain water intake. The multivariable regression tests showed that the risk of periodontitis decreased with increased plain water intake quartiles (Q4 OR = 0.78; 95%CI 0.62-0.96) after fully adjustment. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests showed that gender, age, smoking, diabetes, hypertension or BMI does not significantly interact with the association. However, the relation was significant in males (Q4 OR = 0.64; 95%CI 0.47-0.86) but not in females (Q4 OR = 0.97;95% CI 0.71-1.31). In the smoothed curve fits stratified by gender, the curve for male participants displayed as a U-shape, with an optimal plain water intake at 1200 ml/day. For males drinking plain water less than 1200 ml/day, the risk of periodontitis decreased by 24% with each increase of 500 ml plain water intake (OR = 0.76, 95%CI 0.66-0.87, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Together, the results showed that plain water intake is negatively associated with periodontitis risk in US middle aged and elderly population. Further studies are needed to investigate the mechanism unites this association. Attention should be given to adequate plain water intake when considering dietary suggestions to the population at high risk of developing periodontitis, especially for men.
