Abstract
Understanding the cultural and social aspects of anxiety disorders is necessary to ensure the design and implementation of effective, evidence-based methods for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment among diverse populations, particularly those who are minoritized, marginalized, and traditionally underserved. This article describes variations in anxiety disorder prevalence and the association between sociocultural characteristics and stressors known to increase risk for anxiety. The ways sociocultural context impacts anxiety phenomenology and expression is explored. Then, the literature examining differential help-seeking and service utilization among diverse populations is reviewed followed by a summary of culturally responsive, evidence-based practices for anxiety disorders.

Abstract
Exercise is known to reduce depression and anxiety symptoms. Although the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying this effect remain unknown, exercise-induced increases in neurotransmitter release and hippocampal neurogenesis have been hypothesized to play key roles. One neurotransmitter that has been implicated in both antidepressant-like effects and the regulation of hippocampal neurogenesis is serotonin (5-HT). Complete loss of function of the brain 5-HT synthesis enzyme (tryptophan hydroxylase 2, Tph2) has been reported to prevent exercise-induced increases in neurogenesis and to block a subset of antidepressant-like responses to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), but whether partial loss of Tph2 function blocks the behavioral and neurogenic effects of exercise has not been established. This study used four tests that are predictive of antidepressant efficacy to determine the impact of 5-HT deficiency on responses to exercise in male and female mice. Our results demonstrate that low 5-HT impairs the behavioral effects of exercise in females in the forced swim and novelty-suppressed feeding tests. However, genetic reductions in 5-HT synthesis did not significantly impact exercise-induced alterations in cellular proliferation or immature neuron production in the hippocampus in either sex. These findings highlight the importance of brain 5-HT in mediating behavioral responses to exercise and suggest that individual differences in brain 5-HT synthesis could influence sensitivity to the mental health benefits of exercise. Furthermore, the observed disconnect between neurogenic and behavioral responses to exercise suggests that increased neurogenesis is unlikely to be the primary driver of the behavioral effects of exercise observed here.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alpha-synucleinopathies, such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD), and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), demonstrate sex differences with regard to prevalence, age of onset, and motor manifestations. Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common early and late manifestations of these disorders. OBJECTIVES We aimed to describe sex differences in NPS across alpha-synucleinopathies. METHODS We searched Web of Science Core collection databases to identify observational studies published between January 1, 2000, and June 1, 2022, reporting the prevalence or severity of NPS among individuals with a diagnosis of PD, PDD, or DLB. Prevalence and severity were pooled for each NPS according to sex using random-effects models. RESULTS Two-hundred-and-forty studies, representing 796,026 participants (45% females), were included in the meta-analysis. Female sex was associated with a higher prevalence of anxiety (OR = 1.60 [95% CI: 1.40, 1.82]), depression (OR = 1.56 [1.45, 1.67]), fatigue (OR = 1.21 [1.02, 1.43]), and psychotic symptoms (OR = 1.26 [1.14, 1.40]) and more severe anxiety (g = 1.35 [95% CI: 0.58, 2.13]), depression (g = 1.57 [1.05, 2.08]), and fatigue (g = 0.86 [0.41, 1.32]), while male sex was associated with a higher prevalence of apathy (OR = 0.77 [0.63, 0.93]), impulse control disorders (OR = 0.67 [0.55, 0.82]), REM sleep behavior disorder (OR = 0.54 [0.42, 0.70]), hypersomnolence (OR = 0.67 [0.56, 0.80]), and suicide (OR = 0.30 [0.20, 0.44]). CONCLUSIONS NPS have different prevalences and severities in alpha-synucleinopathies according to sex. These findings support consideration of sex in the elaboration of clinical tools.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The cognitive theory of panic disorder proposes that individuals with panic disorder have a relatively enduring tendency to catastrophically misinterpret bodily sensations resulting in panic attacks. AIMS We investigated whether the evidence is consistent with the theory and its predictions, if updates are required and sought to identify future research considerations. METHODS We searched Scopus, Web of Science, PsycInfo, EMBASE, MEDLINE and CINAHL (1986 to July 2024). Inclusion criteria were studies collecting quantitative data derived from panic disorder patients, testing one of the predictions and using appropriate outcome measures. Exclusion criteria were non-English language publications, all participants under the age of 18 and studies that were not published in a peer-reviewed journal. Quality was assessed using 'QualSyst' and synthesis was based on each prediction tested. PROPSERO registration #CRD42022332211. RESULTS 53 studies were identified amongst 49 publications. There was substantial evidence for all predictions. Three studies did not support the prediction tested and none were inconsistent. LIMITATIONS Most studies were 'medium' in quality and were predominately from female samples. CONCLUSIONS Findings are consistent with the theory and its predictions. Higher quality research is needed and implications for future research are discussed.

Abstract
Globally, more than 13 % of adolescents have clinically significant mental health problems, with anxiety and depression comprising over 40 % of cases. Despite the high prevalence of anxiety disorders among youth, dietary research has been focused on youth with depression, resulting in a significant knowledge gap regarding the impact of anxiety on adolescent diet quality. Adolescents with diagnosed anxiety disorders and healthy controls were included in this study. Anxiety symptoms were measured using the Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Disorders. Diagnosis of anxiety disorder was determined using the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia interview. Five diet quality indices were scored from FFQ. Diet quality indices associated with anxiety symptoms in the correlation matrix were interrogated using multiple linear regression modelling. All models were adjusted for depression. One hundred and twenty-eight adolescents (mean age 14·8 years (sd: 2·1); 66·4 % female) were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Although healthy controls and outpatient participants had similar unhealthy dietary index subscale scores, outpatient participants had lower healthy index scores. Higher anxiety symptoms were associated with lower healthy dietary indices in univariate analysis; after adjusting for comorbid depression; however, anxiety symptoms were no longer associated with dietary indices following adjustment for multiple testing (P = 0·038 to P = 0·077). The association between anxiety symptoms and a poor diet is attenuated by depression. The results of this study support the need for an integrated approach to the assessment of mental and physical well-being and further research aimed at understanding the unique contribution of depression to healthy dietary patterns.

Abstract
Goal-directed and habitual-like behaviors are both necessary to efficiently and effectively navigate the environment. A dysregulation between these behaviors can lead to an overreliance on habitual-like behaviors and may contribute to symptoms experienced in some neuropsychiatric disorders such as substance use disorder. One behavioral task used to evaluate goal-directed and habitual-like behavior is an action-outcome task, contingency degradation, where an action (i.e., lever press) is degraded by decoupling the receipt of a reward from the action. However, little is known about how male and female rats and females across the estrous cycle respond during contingency degradation training and extinction testing. Here, we investigated how the variable of sex and estrous cycle influences contingency degradation training and extinction testing and the correlation between baseline anxiety-like behaviors and performance on contingency degradation extinction testing in adult male and female Long-Evans rats. We found that both males and females learned the contingency degradation task. However, during extinction testing, males respond more to the contingent lever than the non-contingent lever while females do not differ in their responses on the non-contingent and contingent levers. Lower baseline anxiety-like behavior predicted better performance on the contingency degradation test in males, but not females. Next, when we examined performance during extinction testing in females based on their estrous cycle stage on test day, we found that females in the proestrus and estrus stages of the estrous cycle do not differ in their responses on the non-contingent and contingent levers, while females in the metestrus and diestrus stages of the estrous cycle respond more on the contingent lever than the non-contingent lever on the extinction test day, similar to male rats. Our findings indicate that the estrous cycle influences how female rats respond during contingency degradation extinction testing that is dependent on their estrous cycle stage.

Abstract
The prompts "What emotions does the thought of your own death arouse in you?" and "What will happen to you when your body dies?" have been used to induce anxiety in Terror Management Theory. The current study investigated how the responses to these prompts may reveal cross-national differences by using a text-mining approach. Undergraduates in the US (n = 298) and Japan (n = 212) participated in the study. Across both groups, anxiety was the most common emotion. Cross-national differences also emerged, such that students in the US were more likely to mention sadness, funeral, and religiosity for the first prompt, and acceptance, spiritual change, and religiosity for the second prompt. Students in Japan were more likely to mention regret for the first, and sadness, emptiness, and funeral for the second prompt. Results revealed differences and similarities in thoughts and emotions people associate with when thinking about own death.

Abstract
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been reported to detrimentally impact physical and mental health. While experiencing multiple ACEs is common, previous research primarily assessed ACEs by their total count, neglecting the impacts of different experience types. Furthermore, sex-based differences in ACEs and their influences remain unclear. This study employed Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to uncover patterns of ACEs with consideration for sex differences, aiming to elucidate their effects on adult physical and mental health. A geographically nationally representative dataset from the "Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Study (JACSIS)" conducted in 2022 was used. 13,715 men and 14,327 women retrospectively reported their experiences across fifteen ACEs. The analysis revealed four distinct ACE patterns for both sexes: a Multiple Adversities class with a wide range of severe ACEs, a Psychological Abuse class experiencing emotional abuse at home and bullying at school, a Poverty class facing economic hardships, and a Low Adversities class with the fewest ACEs. Multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that more severe patterns of exposure correlated with heightened adverse adult outcomes. However, the extent of these impacts varied by sex and ACE pattern. For instance, men in Multiple Adversities and Psychological Abuse classes exhibited higher tendencies towards conducting physical and psychological abuse behaviors. While ACEs in men were linked to both underweight (in cases of psychological abuse) and obesity (across all classes), women with ACEs generally leaned towards higher body weight. These findings highlight the importance of developing support strategies sensitive to sex differences and the specific content of ACEs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The integration of sex and gender aspects into the research process has been recognized as crucial to the generation of valid data. During the coronavirus pandemic, a great deal of research addressed the mental state of hospital staff, as they constituted a population at risk for infection and distress. However, it is still unknown how the gender dimension was included. We aimed to appraise and measure qualitatively the extent of gender sensitivity. METHODS In this scoping review, we searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL PsycINFO and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) from database inception to November 11, 2021. All quantitative studies with primary data published in English, German, or Spanish and based in the European Union were selected. Included studies had to have assessed the mental health of hospital staff using validated psychometric scales for depression, anxiety, PTSD symptoms, distress, suicidal behavior, insomnia, substance abuse or aggressive behavior. Two independent reviewers applied eligibility criteria to each title/abstract reviewed, to the full text of the article, and performed the data extraction. A gender sensitivity assessment tool was developed and validated, consisting of 18 items followed by a final qualitative assessment. Two independent reviewers assessed the gender dimension of each included article. RESULTS Three thousand one hundred twelve studies were identified, of which 72 were included in the analysis. The most common design was cross-sectional (75.0%) and most of them were conducted in Italy (31.9%). Among the results, only one study assessed suicidal behaviors and none substance abuse disorders or aggressive behaviors. Sex and gender were used erroneously in 83.3% of the studies, and only one study described how the gender of the participants was determined. Most articles (71.8%) did not include sex/gender in the literature review and did not discuss sex/gender-related findings with a gender theoretical background (86.1%). In the analysis, 37.5% provided sex/gender disaggregated data, but only 3 studies performed advanced modeling statistics, such as interaction analysis. In the overall assessment, 3 papers were rated as good in terms of gender sensitivity, and the rest as fair (16.7%) and poor (79.2%). Three papers were identified in which gender stereotypes were present in explaining the results. None of the papers analyzed the results of non-binary individuals. CONCLUSIONS Studies on the mental health of hospital staff during the pandemic did not adequately integrate the gender dimension, despite the institutional commitment of the European Union and the gendered effect of the pandemic. In the development of future mental health interventions for this population, the use and generalizability of current evidence should be done cautiously.

Abstract
This study investigated threat-related attention biases using a new visual search paradigm with eye tracking, which allows for measuring attentional disengagement in isolation. This is crucial as previous studies have been unable to distinguish between engagement, disengagement, and behavioral freezing. Thirty-three participants (Mage = 28.75 years, SD = 8.98; 21 women) with self-reported specific phobia (spiders, snakes, and pointed objects) and their matched controls (Mage = 28.38 years, SD = 8.66; 21 women) took part in the experiment. The participants were instructed to initially focus on a picture in the center of the screen, then search for a target picture in an outer circle consisting of six images, and respond via a button press whether the object in the target picture was oriented to the left or right. We found that phobic individuals show delayed disengagement and slower decision times compared with non-phobic individuals, regardless of whether the stimulus was threat-related or neutral. These results indicate that phobic individuals tend to exhibit poorer attentional control mechanisms and problems inhibiting irrelevant information. We also confirmed a threat-unrelated shared feature effect with complex stimuli (delayed disengagement when an attended stimulus and an unattended target share common stimulus features). This process might play a role in various experimental setups investigating attentional disengagement that has not yet been considered. These findings are important, as good attentional control may serve as a protective mechanism against anxiety disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Doujin (どうじん) is a Japanese term referring to a circle where people share the same interests, usually something that belongs to the Anime, Comics, and Games (ACG) subculture. Individuals who belong to it and create related works, known as ACG doujin creators, are usually described as socially awkward and at potential risk of isolation. In such a context, they may theoretically exhibit higher autistic traits and manifest camouflaging tendencies, which may consequently be associated with their mental health. Nonetheless, the impact of autistic traits and camouflaging on mental health in this subculture remains significantly underexplored. METHODS We recruited 183 Taiwanese ACG doujin creators (age ranges from 18 to 41, 146 female and 37 male) via social networking platforms. Participants completed Chinese online surveys assessing socio-demographic information, doujin activities, past psychiatric history, the 35-item Version of Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ-35), Chinese version Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q-Ch), the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Linear regression analysis was employed to examine the associations between the aforementioned scales. RESULTS Our findings revealed that among ACG doujin creators, descriptively higher level of AQ-35 and CAT-Q-Ch than previous studies were found. Moreover, we observed a positive association between camouflaging behaviours and most AQ-35 subscales, with the exception of the mindreading subscale. Additionally, we identified that both camouflaging and autistic traits were significantly linked to higher PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores. CONCLUSIONS Through this study, we gained insight into the distinctive characteristics of autistic traits, camouflaging behaviours, and mental health among Taiwanese ACG doujin creators, as the associations between the factors mentioned above are divergent compared to previous research. This topic demonstrated that camouflaging is also associated with adverse mental health in a subculture group.

Abstract
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic anxiety condition characterized by persistent excessive worry, anxiety, and fear. Current diagnostic practices primarily rely on clinicians' subjective assessments and experience, highlighting a need for more objective and reliable methods. This study collected 10-minute resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) from 45 GAD patients and 36 healthy controls (HC), focusing on six frontal EEG channels for preprocessing, data segmentation, and frequency band division. Innovatively, this study introduced the "Differential Channel" method, which enhances classification performance by enhancing the information related to anxiety from the data, thereby highlighting signal differences. Utilizing the preprocessed EEG signals, undirected functional connectivity features (Phase Lag Index, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and Mutual Information) and directed functional connectivity features (Partial Directed Coherence) were extracted. Multiple machine learning models were applied to distinguish between GAD patients and HC. The results show that the Deep Forest classifier achieves excellent performance with a 12-second time window of DiffFeature. In particular, the classification of GAD and HC was successfully obtained by combining OriFeature and DiffFeature on Mutual Information with a maximum accuracy of 98.08%. Furthermore, it was observed that undirected functional connectivity features significantly outperformed directed functional connectivity when fewer frontal channels were used. Overall, the methodologies developed in this study offer accurate and practical identification strategies for the early screening and clinical diagnosis of GAD, offering the necessary theoretical and technical support for further enhancing the portability of EEG devices.

Abstract
Test anxiety (TA) is a common emotion among students during examinations. Test-induced stress can remarkably impact students' emotions and limit their performance. Mental stress is a crucial factor that could significantly alter gut microbial composition, but rare reports focus on the correlation between TA and oral microbial composition. This study aims to investigate the impact of TA on students' oral microbiota composition. This study targeted medical students who usually face heavier workloads than average undergraduates. 28 females and 19 males aged 18-30 were enrolled in this study. Questionnaires and saliva samples were collected from the participants before, during, and after the end-term examination. The level of anxiety was classified as normal, mild, moderate, and severe based on the questionnaire scores. In addition, 16S amplicon sequencing was used to analyse the composition of oral microbes. More than half of the students faced different levels of TA before and after the examination. Over three-quarters of students showed anxiety during the examination, and a quarter suffered severe TA. The 16S sequencing data showed that TA significantly altered the oral microbial composition between students with and without TA in all three survey periods. Moreover, during the examination, the genera Rothia and Streptococcus, the oral-beneficial bacteria, markedly decreased in students with TA. On the other hand, the potential pathogenic genera, such as Prevotella, Fusobacterium, and Haemophilus, significantly increased in the students with TA. And the TA effect on oral microbes displayed a gender difference among students. A high ratio of TA existed in the students during their examination period, and TA could significantly alter the oral microbial composition, decrease beneficial microbes, and promote potential pathogenic oral microbes.

Abstract
From adolescence, women become more likely to experience fear dysregulation. Oral contraceptives (OCs) can modulate the brain regions involved in fear processes. OCs are generally used for years and often initiated during adolescence, a sensitive period where certain brain regions involved in the fear circuitry are still undergoing important reorganization. It remains unknown whether OC use during adolescence may induce long-lasting changes in the fear circuitry. This study aimed to examine whether age of onset moderated the relationship between duration of use and fear-related brain structures. We collected structural MRI data in 98 healthy adult women (61 current users, 37 past users) and extracted grey matter volumes (GMV) and cortical thickness (CT) of key regions of the fear circuitry. Non-linear multiple regressions revealed interaction effects between age of onset and quadratic duration of use on GMV of the right hippocampus and right ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). Among women who initiated OCs earlier in adolescence, a short duration of use was associated with smaller hippocampal GMV and thicker vmPFC compared to a longer duration of use. For both GMV and CT of the right vmPFC, women with an early OC onset had more grey matter at a short duration of use than those with a later onset. Our results suggest that OC use earlier in adolescence may induce lasting effects on structural correlates of fear learning and its regulation. These findings support further investigation into the timing of OC use to better comprehend how OCs could disrupt normal brain development processes.

Abstract
In this study we aimed to investigate gender differences in fear generalization tendencies in humans and, inspired by recent findings in animal research, examine whether any such differences could stem from differences in memory precision. Forty men and forty women underwent a differential fear conditioning procedure using geometric shapes as cues. Subsequently, generalized fear responses were assessed across a spectrum of perceptually similar shapes. Throughout generalization testing, perceptual memory accuracy was repeatedly probed using a stimulus recreation task. Using statistical and computational modeling, we found strong evidence for the absence of gender differences in fear learning and generalization behavior. The evidence for gender differences in related processes such as perception and memory was inconclusive. Although some of our findings hinted at the possibility that women may be more perceptive of physical differences between stimuli and have more accurate memory than men, those observations were not consistently replicated across experimental conditions and analytical approaches. Our results contribute to the emerging literature on gender differences in perceptual fear generalization in humans and underscore the need for further systematic research to explore the interplay between gender and mechanisms associated with fear generalization across different experimental contexts.

Abstract
Background/Objective: Although low-methoxy (LM) pectin (polysaccharides extracted from citrus peels) can reduce inflammation by binding to and inhibiting the TLR-2 pathway in animal models and in vitro studies, the anti-inflammatory effects of LM pectin in humans and mood have not been explored to date. The purpose of this study is to assess the role of dietary supplementation with LM pectin in healthy volunteers on inflammatory markers and on mood, specifically anxiety and depression. Methods: We carried out a 4-week dietary intervention with LM citrus pectin on healthy volunteers (N = 14, age 40 ± 16 y, BMI 24.7 ± 3.0 kg/m2, sex F 57%) comparing the effects of daily supplementation with 20 g of LM citrus pectin versus 10 g of maltodextrin as the control (N = 15 age 43.2 ± 11 y, BMI 25.18 ± 2.0 kg/m2, sex F 66%). The effects on mood and inflammation were also tested with LM pectin at 5 g, 10 g and 15 g (2 weeks each) in an independent cohort of n = 15 healthy volunteers (age 36 ± 21 y, BMI 23.5 ± 2.4 kg/m2, sex F 80%). We assessed serum levels of TNF-alpha (downstream from TLR-2 activation), IL-1 beta, IL-6, IL-10, INF-gamma, CRP, zonulin and TLR-2 concentration which were measured using ELISA in blood samples collected at both the baseline and follow-up visits. Validated measures of anxiety and depression were collected at baseline and follow-up. Results: Supplementation with 20 g of LM pectin resulted in decreases in the pro-inflammatory markers TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6 and INF-gamma (all p < 0.05) and an increase in anti-inflammatory marker IL-10 (p = 0.01) at the end of the 4 weeks. No such effects were observed in the control group. In addition, a significant drop in anxiety scores (from 8.38 to 4.46, p < 0.006) was found with the 20 g/day intervention but not in the control arm. In the dose-response study, anti-inflammatory effects were seen only at 15 g for TNFα (p < 0.003) and a suggestive increase in IL-10 (p = 0.08), alongside a drop in TLR-2 (p < 0.027). No significant anti-inflammatory effects were observed at 5 g and 10 g doses of LM pectin supplementation. Significant dose-dependent drops in both anxiety and depression scores were found with 10 g (p < 0.001) and 15 g per day (p < 0.0002). Conclusions: The current study identifies anxiety-reducing and anti-inflammatory effects of supplementation with 15 g/day LM pectin in healthy humans. Further research is needed to elucidate the precise mechanism and to validate the efficient dose and minimum duration of supplementation.

Abstract
Introduction Prospective memory (PM) is the ability to create and execute future tasks. It is comprised of two components: cue detection and intention retrieval. PM is essential for performing high-level goals, a proficiency extremely important in college populations. Anxiety is a prevalent psychological experience in college populations that may be associated with impairments in PM. The present study examined PM performance and anxiety in college students, using neurophysiology to measure the mechanism of impairment. Methods After self-reporting anxiety levels, 80 participants completed an event-based, focal PM task while two event-related potentials were recorded from an electroencephalogram: the N300 to assess cue detection, and the prospective positivity to assess intention retrieval. Results The results demonstrated that, when controlling for age and gender, higher state anxiety was significantly associated with lower PM accuracy (β = -0.27, p = 0.020) and lower prospective positivity amplitude (β = -0.04, p = 0.021). Lower prospective positivity amplitude was significantly associated with lower PM accuracy (β = 0.27, p = 0.015). Higher state anxiety was significantly indirectly associated with lower PM accuracy mediated by lower prospective positivity amplitude (ab = -0.11, p = 0.047). Discussion These findings suggest intention retrieval could be a key component in supporting PM for college students with high state anxiety.

Abstract
Fast-spiking parvalbumin (PV)-positive cells are key players in orchestrating pyramidal neuron activity, and their dysfunction is consistently observed in myriad brain diseases. To understand how immune complement pathway dysregulation in PV cells drives disease pathogenesis, we have developed a transgenic line that permits cell-type specific overexpression of the schizophrenia-associated C4 gene. We found that overexpression of mouse C4 (mC4) in PV cells causes sex-specific alterations in anxiety-like behavior and deficits in synaptic connectivity and excitability of PFC PV cells. Using a computational model, we demonstrated that these microcircuit deficits led to hyperactivity and disrupted neural communication. Finally, pan-neuronal overexpression of mC4 failed to evoke the same deficits in behavior as PV-specific mC4 overexpression, suggesting that perturbations of this neuroimmune gene in fast-spiking neurons are especially detrimental to circuits associated with anxiety-like behavior. Together, these results provide a causative link between C4 and the vulnerability of PV cells in brain disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The psychosocial impact of medical marijuana use is not yet known. This study evaluated short-term changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) over the first three months of medical marijuana use. METHODS This prospective, observational, longitudinal study followed adults newly recommended for medical marijuana by a physician for any of the more than 20 qualifying medical conditions in Pennsylvania. Participants (N = 438) provided their clinical status and demographic information, and completed semi-structured interviews prior to medical marijuana initiation (baseline) and at three months. HRQoL was assessed by the Short Form-36 (SF-36). Paired-samples t-tests evaluated changes in HRQoL over time. RESULTS Participants (M age = 46.4 years [15.6]; 66.4% female) were mostly commonly referred for medical marijuana to treat anxiety disorders (61.9%) or severe chronic or intractable pain (53.6%). Participants reported rapid and significant improvements in all of the domains of HRQoL from baseline to three months after initiating medical marijuana use (physical functioning, role limitations due to physical health problems, emotional well-being, role limitations due to emotional problems, bodily pain, social functioning, energy/fatigue and general health, P < .001 for all). Age was negatively predictive of level of improvement over time for the physical functioning (P < .0001), role limitations due to physical health problems (P < .001), and pain (P < .0001) domains after controlling for baseline, with older participants displaying less improvement than younger participants. CONCLUSIONS Gains were observed in all HRQoL domains assessed after three months of medical marijuana use. In several domains, age was a significant predictor of degree of improvement.

Abstract
Chronic diseases and pain exacerbate depressive symptom in Syria. Limited research on hospital-induced depressive symptom among Syrian patients with chronic diseases warrants further study. A cross-sectional study in four Damascus hospitals revealed high rates of pain and depressive symptom. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and severity of chronic pain and hospital-induced depressive symptom in Syrian patients, as well as the relationship between pain, depressive symptom, and medication behavior. This study analyzes the impact of pain, hospitalization, and medication on patients with chronic diseases. The four Damascus hospitals included 453 patients from various departments. Data were collected through structured interviews and internationally recognized scales such as the PSEQ, HADS, and MMAS. These findings offer insights into pain management and psychological well-being, with implications for patient care and support strategies. The study involved 453 patients with chronic diseases, with gender distribution showing 46.6% females and 53.4% males. The age range was from 7 to 87 years, with an average of 46.87 years. Chi-square tests revealed a significant connection between gender and HADS-A scores, where 48.3% of females had abnormalities (χ2 (1, N = 453) = 7.125, p = 0.028). Marital status was significantly associated with anxiety and depressive symptom levels, particularly among widowed and divorced patients. Employment status, education, and comorbidity were linked to abnormal HADS-A scores, while education level showed a positive correlation with HADS-D scores. ANOVA tests showed significant differences in MMAS scores across income groups (F (3, 449) = 3.167, p = 0.024), with a notable difference between low-income and lower-middle-income groups (mean difference = 0.389, p = 0.031. Chronic pain and HID are prevalent among Syrian patients with chronic diseases and influenced by socio-demographic factors. Personalized interventions are needed to address psychological symptoms and medication behavior.

Abstract
Background: Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) affects many critical care survivors and family members. Nevertheless, the relationship between PICS-relevant domains in cardiac arrest (CA) survivors and psychological distress in their family members (henceforth, PICS-F) remains underexplored. Methods: We enrolled consecutive CA patients admitted between 16 August 2021 and 28 June 2023 to an academic medical center, along with their close family members, in prospective studies. Survivors' PICS domains were: physical dependence (Physical Self-Maintenance Scale, PSMS), cognitive impairments (Modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status, TICS-M), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSS) symptoms (PTSD Checklist-PCL 5), as well as PICS-F (PCL-5 Total Score). Hierarchical multivariate linear regressions examined associations between PICS-F and survivors' PICS domains. Results: Of 74 dyads (n = 148), survivors had a mean (SD) age of 56 ± 16 years, with 61% being male and with a median hospital stay of 28 days. Family members (43% spouses) were slightly younger (52 ± 14 years), predominantly female (72%), and of minority race/ethnicity (62%). A high prevalence of PICS assessed 28.5 days (interquartile range 10-63) post-CA was observed in survivors (78% physical dependence, 54% cognitive impairment, 30% PTSS) and in family members (30% PTSS). Survivor PTSS was significantly associated with family member distress (β = 0.3, p = 0.02), independent of physical dependence (β = 0.0, p = 0.9), cognitive impairment (β = -0.1, p = 0.5), family member characteristics, and duration of hospitalization. Conclusions: Both CA survivors and their family members showed substantial evidence of likely PICS. Survivor PTSS is notably associated with family member distress, highlighting the need for dyadic interventions to enhance psychosocial outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE : To assess gender differences in COVID-19 related changes in home and work responsibilities longitudinally, and determine whether these differences, together with other potential risk and protective factors, are associated with depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology. METHOD Symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD were measured using an online survey instrument, between May 2020 and April 2021, in four waves completed at 3-monthly intervals. Analyses were based on data from the COvid MEntal healTh (COMET) survey which investigated the mental health effects of the COVID-19 outbreak spanning 13 countries on five continents in N = 7,909 participants. RESULTS From the first to the last wave, women reported a greater increase in home and work responsibilities, and had higher depression, anxiety and PTSD scores compared to men. Women who reported a reduction in income due to the pandemic had higher depression scores. Working harder and experiencing a reduction in income were also associated with higher anxiety scores in women but not in men. Women were more likely to score above the cut-off for depression (32.5% vs 23.6%, p < .001), anxiety (21.2% vs 14.4%, p < .001) and PTSD (21.2% vs 14.4%, p < .001) than men during the first wave. Stronger reliance on socially supported coping mechanisms was a risk factor for depression, anxiety and PTSD in men and women. CONCLUSION Women were more likely to report mental health problems which may be related to the gender disproportionate increase in home and work responsibilities but not necessarily due to COVID-19 stressors.

Abstract
Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic condition characterized by partial or complete monosomy X. A reduced life expectancy has been shown in TS, depending on an increased risk of aortic dissection, and ischemic heart disease. Studies covering the occurrence of psychiatric conditions are sparse within TS. Several case reports describe concomitant TS and neuropsychiatric abnormalities that may represent a pathogenetic link to genetics, as well as feature correlates of TS. The aim of this study was to determine the presence, and the frequency of psychiatric diagnosis in women with TS in a Swedish cohort followed during 25 years' time. Statistics from the entire female population in Sweden of corresponding age was used as reference. Data were retrieved from clinical examinations and validated from the National Board of Health and Welfare registries for women with TS (n = 487), aged 16 to 84 years, with respect to mental health disorders. The most common diagnoses in TS were mood and anxiety disorders. There was no increase in psychiatric diagnosis within the group with time, nor correlation to specific karyotype or somatic comorbidity as congenital heart disease and hypothyroidism, hormonal treatment, or childbirth. In addition, the frequency of psychiatric diagnosis in TS was lower than in the population-based data. Further investigations are needed in the view of the fact that women with Turner syndrome should not be burdened with more severe diagnoses.

Abstract
In the present era, the rapidly growing social media trends of the digital age have the potential to affect the psychological well-being of individuals. In this context, understanding how Social Media Addiction (SMA) interacts with various factors is important to understanding its potential impact on individuals' psychosocial health. In particular, the prevalence of SMA and its strong relationship with important variables such as anxiety, depression, stress, academic self-efficacy, general belongingness, and life satisfaction have received considerable attention from researchers and the society. This research aims to address the relationship between SMA and these variables in a holistic manner. The research further explored the relationship between life satisfaction and depression, anxiety, academic self-efficacy, and general belongingness. The research is based on a study conducted with 616 students (388 female and 228 male; 17-32 age range) at a state university in the Southeast of Turkey. Personal information form, Smartphone Addiction Scale, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, General Belongingness Scale, and Life Satisfaction Scale were used as data collection tools. Using a structural equation modeling approach, the research not only examined the significant relationships but also examined the mediating and moderating effects in more detail. According to the research results, SMA significantly affects academic self-efficacy, general belongingness, depression, stress and anxiety. Academic self-efficacy and general belongingness both impact life satisfaction. However, SMA does not have a significant effect on life satisfaction. Moreover, it is revealed general belongingness play effective roles in the relationship between SMA and life satisfaction. As a result of the research, it was revealed that gender plays a moderating role in the relationship between SMA and life satisfaction. It has been observed that gender has a moderating role in the relationships between academic self-efficacy, general belongingness, depression, anxiety and stress and life satisfaction. Conversely, there is no moderating influence of gender on the impact of SMA on academic self-efficacy, general belongingness, depression, anxiety, or stress. Consequently, the relationships between SMA and other variables play an important role in understanding their effects on individuals' mental health.

Abstract
Maternal immune activation (MIA) is reported to increase the risk of psychiatric disorders in the offspring. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Methods: We constructed a MIA mouse model by intraperitoneal injection of LPS into pregnant mice and evaluated the behaviors and gene expression profiles in the brains of the female and male offspring, respectively. Results: We found that the MIA female offspring exhibited increased anxiety and a large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the brain, which were enriched with candidate gene sets of psychiatric disorders and immune functions. In contrast, the MIA male offspring exhibited no significant abnormal behaviors and only a small number of DEGs that were not enriched with disease genes and immune functions. Therefore, we further pursued the downstream study on the molecular mechanism underlying the increased anxiety in the female offspring. We identified the lncRNA AU020206-IRFs-STAT1-cytokine axis by integrating lncRNA-protein interaction data and TF-promoter interaction data, and verified the axis in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion: This study illustrates that MIA upregulates the AU020206-IRFs-STAT1 axis in controlling the brain immunity linked to abnormal behaviors, providing a basis for understanding the role of MIA in psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
FKBP51, also known as FK506-binding protein 51, is a molecular chaperone and scaffolding protein with significant roles in regulating hormone signaling and responding to stress. Genetic variants in FKBP5, which encodes FKBP51, have been implicated in a growing number of neuropsychiatric disorders, which has spurred efforts to target FKBP51 therapeutically. However, the molecular mechanisms and sub-anatomical regions influenced by FKBP51 in these disorders are not fully understood. In this study, we aimed to examine the impact of Fkbp5 ablation using circadian phenotyping and molecular analyses. Our findings revealed that the lack of FKBP51 did not significantly alter circadian rhythms, as detected by wheel-running activity, but did offer protection against stress-mediated disruptions in rhythmicity in a sex-dependent manner. Protein changes in Fkbp5 KO mice, as measured by histology and proteomics, revealed alterations in a brain region- and sex-dependent manner. Notably, regardless of sex, aged Fkbp5 KOs showed elevated MYCBP2, FBXO45, and SPRYD3 levels, which are associated with neuronal-cell adhesion and synaptic integrity. Additionally, pathways such as serotonin receptor signaling and S100 family signaling were differentially regulated in Fkbp5 KO mice. Weighted protein correlation network analysis identified protein networks linked with synaptic transmission and neuroinflammation. The information generated by this work can be used to better understand the molecular changes in the brain during aging and in the absence of Fkbp5, which has implications for the continued development of FKBP51-focused therapeutics for stress-related disorders.

Abstract
The human brain stands as an intricate organ, embodying a nexus of structure, function, development, and diversity. This review delves into the multifaceted landscape of the brain, spanning its anatomical intricacies, diverse functional capacities, dynamic developmental trajectories, and inherent variability across individuals. The dynamic process of brain development, from early embryonic stages to adulthood, highlights the nuanced changes that occur throughout the lifespan. The brain, a remarkably complex organ, is composed of various anatomical regions, each contributing uniquely to its overall functionality. Through an exploration of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and electrophysiology, this review elucidates how different brain structures interact to support a wide array of cognitive processes, sensory perception, motor control, and emotional regulation. Moreover, it addresses the impact of age, sex, and ethnic background on brain structure and function, and gender differences profoundly influence the onset, progression, and manifestation of brain disorders shaped by genetic, hormonal, environmental, and social factors. Delving into the complexities of the human brain, it investigates how variations in anatomical configuration correspond to diverse functional capacities across individuals. Furthermore, it examines the impact of neurodegenerative diseases on the structural and functional integrity of the brain. Specifically, our article explores the pathological processes underlying neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases, shedding light on the structural alterations and functional impairments that accompany these conditions. We will also explore the current research trends in neurodegenerative diseases and identify the existing gaps in the literature. Overall, this article deepens our understanding of the fundamental principles governing brain structure and function and paves the way for a deeper understanding of individual differences and tailored approaches in neuroscience and clinical practice-additionally, a comprehensive understanding of structural and functional changes that manifest in neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
This paper provides a summary of the role of nitric oxide (NO) and hormones in the development of chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These mental health conditions are prevalent globally and involve complex molecular interactions. Although there is a significant amount of research and therapeutic options available, the underlying mechanisms of these disorders are still not fully understood. The primary pathophysiologic processes involved in chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD include dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the intracellular influence of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) on transcription factors, an inflammatory response with the formation of nitrergic oxidative species, and reduced serotonergic transmission in the dorsal raphe nucleus. Despite the extensive literature on this topic, there is a great need for further research to clarify the complexities inherent in these pathways, with the primary aim of improving psychiatric care.

Abstract
Anxiety fluctuates across the human menstrual cycle, with symptoms worsening during phases of declining or low ovarian hormones. Similar findings have been observed across the rodent estrous cycle, however, the magnitude and robustness of these effects have not been meta-analytically quantified. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of estrous cycle effects on anxiety-like behaviour (124 articles; k = 259 effect sizes). In both rats and mice, anxiety-like behaviour was higher during metestrus/diestrus (lower ovarian hormones) than proestrus (higher ovarian hormones) (g = 0.44 in rats, g = 0.43 in mice). There was large heterogeneity in the data, which was partially accounted for by strain, experimental task, and reproductive status. Nonetheless, the effect of estrous cycle on anxiety-like behaviour was highly robust, with the fail-safe N test revealing the effect would remain significant even if 21,388 additional studies yielded null results. These results suggest that estrous cycle should be accounted for in studies of anxiety in females. Doing so will facilitate knowledge about menstrual-cycle regulation of anxiety disorders in humans.

The Multifactorial Memory Questionnaire (MMQ; Troyer & Rich, [2002]. Psychometric properties of a new metamemory questionnaire for older adults. The Journals of Gerontology Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences, 57(1), P19-P27) is a widely used measure of subjective memory consisting of three scales: Satisfaction, Ability, and Strategies. Although subjective memory complaints are prevalent across different age groups, the factor structure and psychometric properties of the MMQ have yet to be examined in young adults. Here, we independently replicated the original MMQ factor structure in N = 408 young adults (YA) recruited from undergraduate courses and N = 327 older adults (OA) and, for the first time, assessed the age-invariance of the scale using measurement invariance testing. YAs made significantly higher ratings than OAs on MMQ-Satisfaction and MMQ-Strategies, indicating greater satisfaction with their memory and greater use of strategies, but the groups were similar on MMQ-Ability. The original MMQ factor structure was replicated in OAs but not in YAs, and age invariance was not supported. Future studies seeking to compare young and older adults could therefore consider either requesting modification of the MMQ for use with young adults or using a different scale.

Abstract
This report evaluates the effects of chlordiazepoxide, a benzodiazepine commonly prescribed to manage anxiety-related disorders in adolescent/pediatric populations, on elevated plus maze (EPM) performance in juvenile mice. This approach was taken because chlordiazepoxide produces anxiolytic-like effects in multiple models in adult rodents, however, less is known about the behavioral effects of this benzodiazepine in juveniles. Thus, we administered a single intraperitoneal injection of chlordiazepoxide (0, 5, or 10 mg/kg) to postnatal day 35 male C57BL/6 mice. Thirty minutes later, mice were allowed to explore the EPM for 5-min. We found that chlordiazepoxide-treated mice (5 and 10 mg/kg) spent more time exploring the open arms of the EPM. No differences in velocity (cm/s) or distance traveled (cm) were observed between the groups. These results indicate that chlordiazepoxide induces anxiolytic-related behavior in adolescent male mice.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the reliability and validity of the Italian translation of the Unhelpful Thoughts and Beliefs about Stuttering (UTBAS) scales for adults who stutter, as there are no assessment tools currently available in Italy. The UTBAS scales provide a comprehensive stuttering-specific measure of the unhelpful thoughts and beliefs that can be used to screen for indicators of social anxiety in adults who stutter. Additionally, the UTBAS scales also allow the identification of negative thoughts and beliefs that negatively impact speech treatment outcomes. METHOD The translation of the UTBAS scales into Italian (UTBAS-ITA) was completed using the forward-backward translation process and it was administered to 98 adults who stutter (AWS) and 98 adults who do not stutter (AWNS). Both groups were matched for gender and age. We also administered the UTBAS-ITA to 76 AWS a second time within a two-week interval to assess test-retest reliability. Additionally, we administered the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale to 20 AWS to assess concurrent validity. RESULTS The UTBAS-ITA showed good power of discrimination between AWS and AWNS, high internal validity, high internal consistency, good construct validity, and good test-retest reliability. CONCLUSION Since there is a scarcity of clinical assessment tools for adults who stutter in Italy, the UTBAS-ITA could serve as an assessment tool and outcome measure for clinical and research environments.

Abstract
Growing evidence supports dopamine's role in aversive states, yet systematic reviews focusing on dopamine receptors in defensive behaviors are lacking. This study presents a systematic review of the literature examining the influence of drugs acting on dopamine D2-like receptors on unconditioned and conditioned fear in rodents. The review reveals a predominant use of adult male rats in the studies, with limited inclusion of female rodents. Commonly employed tests include the elevated plus maze and auditory-cued fear conditioning. The findings indicate that systemic administration of D2-like drugs has a notable impact on both innate and learned aversive states. Generally, antagonists tend to increase unconditioned fear, while agonists decrease it. Moreover, both agonists and antagonists typically reduce conditioned fear. These effects are attributed to the involvement of distinct neural circuits in these states. The observed increase in unconditioned fear induced by D2-like antagonists aligns with dopamine's role in suppressing midbrain-mediated responses. Conversely, the reduction in conditioned fear is likely a result of blocking dopamine activity in the mesolimbic pathway. The study highlights the need for future research to delve into sex differences, explore alternative testing paradigms, and identify specific neural substrates. Such investigations have the potential to advance our understanding of the neurobiology of aversive states and enhance the therapeutic application of dopaminergic agents.

Abstract
Hyperhomocysteinemia or high levels (> 15 µmol/L) of homocysteine (Hcy)in the blood has been suggested to affect the brain through vascular and neurodegenerative pathways and potentially impact cognition. The current study aims to explore the association of high homocysteine with cognition and brain volume changes in a cohort of middle and old agedr adults. The study recruited 1296 participants aged ≥ 45 years from Tata Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TLSA), an ongoing cohort study. The participants underwent detailed cognitive assessments using Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-III (ACE-III) and Computerized Assessment of Adult Information Processing (COGNITO) neuropsychological battery and MR imaging using a 3T scanner. The participants were classified based on the median homocysteine level (16.89 µmol/L) into low Hcy (≤ median) and high Hcy (> median) groups. When adjusted for age, gender, years of education, vitamin B12, folate and dyslipidaemia, Generalised Linear Model (GLM) found a significant association of high Hcy with vocabulary task [β (95% CI) - 1.354 (- 2.655, - 0.052); p = 0.041]. Significant associations was also obtained between cerebral white matter volume and high Hcy [β (95% CI) - 5617.182 (- 11062.762, - 173.602); p = 0.043]. The results suggest that people with high Hcy levels performed poorer in cognitive tasks related to language domain and had lesser cerebral white matter volume. This indicates that homocysteine might have a profound impact on brain structure as well as function.

Abstract
Stress, which triggers numerous physiological and behavioral responses in the organism, is a significant risk factor that contributes to the development of psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. This study aimed to investigate the inflammation, oxidative stress status, anxiety, and depression-like behaviors of adolescent rodents exposed to chronic intermittent cold stress. Adolescent male rats were subjected to a modified chronic intermittent cold stress model (21 days, 1 hour/day, 4 °C). Depression-like behaviors were evaluated using the sucrose preference and forced swimming tests, while anxiety-like behaviors were assessed using the open field, elevated plus maze, and light-dark box tests. We measured levels of cortisol, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, brain-derived natriuretic factor, reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, total oxidants and antioxidants, and other chemicals in the prefrontal cortex, thalamus, striatum, and hippocampus brain regions of rats using ELISA and colorimetric methods. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test and Pearson correlation analysis. After the cold stress treatment, both anxiety and depression-like behaviors increased remarkably in the subjects. Our study revealed significant changes in various brain regions among the stress-exposed subjects. Cold stress resulted in decreased BDNF levels in the prefrontal cortex and striatum (p < 0.05), increased cortisol levels in the prefrontal cortex (p < 0.05), increased IL-1β levels in the hippocampus and thalamus (p < 0.05), increased protein carbonyl levels in the striatum (p < 0.05), and decreased TAS in the prefrontal cortex and thalamus (p < 0.05). Adolescent rats exposed to cold exhibit both anxiety- and depression-like behaviors. This study observed an increase in inflammation in various brain regions, yet the responses to stress varied. Our findings suggest that adolescence is a period of heightened sensitivity to stress, which can lead to dramatic consequences.

Abstract
AIM Adolescents and young adults are vulnerable to suicidality, especially those at high risk such as young people who use drugs (YPUD). This study aimed to assess the prevalence and related factors of suicide risk among this population. METHODS We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study on YPUD aged 16-24 in the community in Hanoi, Vietnam. Data on socio-demographic characteristics, drug use, and adverse childhood experiences were collected using face-to-face questionnaires by research assistants. YPUD were screened by psychiatrists for depression, psychotic symptoms, and suicide risk, using the MINI questionnaire. RESULTS Three hundred-seven YPUD (250 males, 57 females) participated in the study; of those, 86 (28.0%) were at risk of suicide. Gender (female), adverse childhood experiences, depression, and psychosis were relevant factors. CONCLUSION The prevalence of suicide risk among young people using drugs was high. Therefore, suicide risk should be screened and monitored in the clinical assessment of this population. In addition, the intervention efforts to detect and intervene in adverse events during childhood may be one way to prevent mental health and suicide in later life.

Abstract
Anxiety is one of the most prevalent problems that affects children and adolescents. The vast majority of diagnostic tools for anxiety depend on written or verbal reports from children and adolescents or their significant others. The validity and reliability of such reports can be compromised by their subjective nature. Thus, there is growing interest in whether anxiety can be indexed with objective physiological measures. The key aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine which physiological measures are most reliably associated with elevated levels of anxiety amongst children and adolescents. Online databases (e.g., PsycINFO, Embase, Medline) were searched for relevant studies according to pre-determined criteria. Twenty-five studies comprising 2502 participants (N = 1160 with high anxiety) met inclusion, identifying 11 groups of physiological measures. Our meta-analysis revealed that skin conductance level is the most sensitive measure of anxiety (d = 0.83), followed by electromyography (EMG) measures (d = 0.71) and skin conductance response (d = 0.58). However, the included studies varied in terms of subjective measures, study designs, experimental task measures, and physiological measures. Consideration of these differences in methodology offer potential directions for future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to stress during childhood and adolescence is a risk factor for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and comorbid conditions, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We previously established an adolescent social isolation (SI) model that leads to the emergence of a wide range of behavioral risk factors for AUD, including increased anxiety-like behavior, locomotor activity, and ethanol consumption in male and female rats. Here, we sought to test the hypothesis that SI may increase vulnerability to single prolonged stress (SPS), a rodent model of PTSD. METHODS Female Long Evans rats (n = 8/group) were either single-housed or group-housed (GH) (4/cage) on postnatal day 21. One week later, rats underwent testing in the open field test (OFT), elevated plus-maze (EPM), and successive alleys test (SAT). Following initial behavioral testing, a subset of SI/GH rats were exposed to SPS. All rats were then tested on the novelty-suppressed feeding test (NSFT) followed by fear conditioning and home cage two-bottle choice to assess ethanol consumption. RESULTS SI significantly increased activity in the OFT and anxiety-like behavior on the SAT, but not the EPM. While SI and SPS alone had no effect on the NSFT, exposure to both stressors significantly increased approach latency. Complex effects of stress history were observed across a 3-day fear conditioning paradigm and no group differences were observed with home cage ethanol consumption, regardless of prior ethanol exposure. CONCLUSIONS The results from this study provide novel evidence that SI interacts with SPS in female rats to influence behavior in assays of unconditioned anxiety-like behavior (NSFT) and conditioned fear. Surprisingly, stress exposure had no effect on home cage ethanol consumption. Ultimately, these models provide useful avenues to examine the interaction between stressful experiences, alcohol exposure, biological sex, and the neurobiological adaptations underlying potential risk factors for psychiatric conditions.

Abstract
Introduction The utilization of emergency departments (EDs) for managing psychiatric emergencies has significantly increased in the United States because of the increasing prevalence of mental health disorders. This study examined national case volumes and sex disparities in ED visits for psychiatric emergencies using data from the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS). Methods This retrospective analysis included adult ED visits for psychiatric emergencies identified using relevant International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) codes. Primary endpoints included national case volumes by sex. Hospitalizations with age < 18 years and those with missing data on sex were excluded. Secondary endpoints included inpatient mortality, ED and inpatient costs, admission rates, discharge disposition, length of stay (LOS), and number of procedures. Results In 2021, there were approximately 143.5 million ED visits in the United States, with 7,978,490 of these being for psychiatric emergencies. The most common presentations were substance abuse and intoxication (5,119,086 (64.2%)), severe bipolar disorder (1,912,670 (24%)), and anxiety or panic attacks (1,015,486 (12.7%)). Approximately 3,997,223 (50.1%) were women, and 3,981,267 (49.9%) were men. Men were older (mean age: 45 versus 43 years; P<0.001), were more likely to be uninsured (712,647 (17.9%) versus 497,658 (12.5%); P<0.001), and had a higher Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) (CCI ≥ 2: 792,272 (19.9%) versus 643,552 (16.1%); P<0.001). More men than women presented to the ED with acute substance abuse or intoxication (3,196,945 (80.3%) versus 1,922,142 (48.1%)), bipolar disorder with or without psychosis (958,275 (24.1%) versus 954,395 (23.9%); P<0.001), and suicidal ideation (267,638 (6.7%) versus 208,989 (5.2%); P<0.001). More women than men presented with severe depression (455,683 (11.4%) versus 441,921 (11.1%)), anxiety and panic attacks (615,572 (15.4%) versus 402,108 (10.1%)), acute stress reaction (35,975 (0.9%) versus 23,888 (0.6%)), eating disorders (3,997 (0.1%) versus 27,869 (0.07%)), and a history of abuse (21,164 (0.53%) versus 19,569 (0.49%); P<0.001). Women had lower mortality rates (27,980 (0.7%) versus 63,956 (1.6%); P<0.001), lower mean ED costs (adjusted mean difference (AMD): $1,189; P<0.001), fewer in-hospital admissions (1,211,158 (30.3%) versus 1,453,162 (36.5%); P<0.001), and a higher number of prolonged hospitalizations (1,442,998 (36.1%) versus 1,194,380 (30%); P<0.001) compared with men. Conclusion This study highlights significant sex disparities in ED utilization for psychiatric emergencies. Men more frequently present with substance abuse and severe comorbidities, leading to higher healthcare costs and inpatient admissions. Women, while more likely to present with anxiety and depressive disorders, incur lower costs and have better overall outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) commonly experience co-occurring diagnoses, which are often overlooked and misdiagnosed and have detrimental impacts on accessing appropriate services. The prevalence of these co-occurring diagnoses varies widely in the existing literature and has not been examined in PAE without an FASD diagnosis. METHOD A search was conducted in five databases and the reference sections of three review papers, finding a total of 2180 studies. 57 studies were included in the final analysis with a cumulative sample size of 29,644. Bayesian modeling was used to determine aggregate prevalence rates of co-occurring disorders and analyze potential moderators. RESULTS 82 % of people with PAE had a co-occurring diagnosis. All disorders had a higher prevalence in individuals with PAE than the general population with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disorder, and intellectual disability (ID) being the most prevalent. Age, diagnostic status, and sex moderated the prevalence of multiple disorders. LIMITATIONS While prevalence of disorders is crucial information, it does not provide a direct representation of daily functioning and available supports. Results should be interpreted in collaboration with more individualized research to provide the most comprehensive representation of the experience of individuals with PAE. CONCLUSIONS Co-occurring diagnoses are extremely prevalent in people with PAE, with older individuals, females, and those diagnosed with FASD being most at risk for having a co-occurring disorder. These findings provide a more rigorous examination of the challenges faced by individuals with PAE than has existed in the literature, providing clinicians with information to ensure early identification and effective treatment of concerns to prevent lifelong challenges.

Abstract
Introduction: We aimed to evaluate social media addiction in Romanian undergraduate nursing students and its association with academic performance, depression, and anxiety. Methods: We used a cross-sectional online survey to collect data among nursing undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Iuliu Hatieganu", Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The Social Media Addiction Scale-Student Form (SMAS-SF), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used to assess social media addiction, depression, and anxiety, respectively. Results: A total of 90 nursing students participated in the study, of which 82 (91.1%) were females and 81 (90%) were of Romanian ethnicity. The median age of participants was 21 years (18-40). Males showed higher BDI total scores, SMAS-SF total scores, and STAI scale A state anxiety compared to females, and females showed higher STAI scale A trait anxiety compared to males, although these results were not statistically significant. Also, we found no significant difference in these variables between participants from different study years. Participants with no or mild depression had a significantly higher academic performance (p-value = 0.001), lower SMAS-SF (p-value = 0.004), and lower STAI scores (p-value < 0.001) compared to participants with borderline, moderate, or severe depression after performing multivariate regression analysis. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that depression was significantly associated with social media addiction, anxiety, and lower academic performance in Romanian undergraduate nursing students.

Abstract
Some mental health problems such as depression and anxiety are more common in females, while others such as autism and attention deficit/hyperactivity (AD/H) are more common in males. However, the neurobiological origins of these sex differences are poorly understood. Animal studies have shown substantial sex differences in neuronal and glial cell structure, while human brain imaging studies have shown only small differences, which largely reflect overall body and brain size. Advanced diffusion MRI techniques can be used to examine intracellular, extracellular, and free water signal contributions and provide unique insights into microscopic cellular structure. However, the extent to which sex differences exist in these metrics of subcortical gray matter structures implicated in psychiatric disorders is not known. Here, we show large sex-related differences in microstructure in subcortical regions, including the hippocampus, thalamus, and nucleus accumbens in a large sample of young adults. Unlike conventional T1-weighted structural imaging, large sex differences remained after adjustment for age and brain volume. Further, diffusion metrics in the thalamus and amygdala were associated with depression, anxiety, AD/H, and antisocial personality problems. Diffusion MRI may provide mechanistic insights into the origin of sex differences in behavior and mental health over the life course and help to bridge the gap between findings from experimental, epidemiological, and clinical mental health research.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The current war on the Gaza strip and the circulating violent content is believed to negatively impact the mental health of the Palestinians living in refugee camps outside their homeland. This study explores the prevalence and correlates of depression, anxiety, and insomnia in a cohort of female Palestinian refugees in Jordan who have family members entangled in the persistent conflict in the Gaza strip. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study employed validated tools to assess depression, anxiety, and insomnia in women residing in a Gaza camp located in Jerash, Jordan. The correlates were determined by regression analysis. Results: The study unearths disconcerting statistics from 177 recruited women, revealing alarmingly high rates of severe depression (73%), anxiety (60%), and insomnia (65%). Multivariable analysis revealed that severe depression was significantly associated with prior diagnosis with chronic diseases (OR = 3.0, CI = 1.36-6.58), and having a first-degree relative in Gaza (OR = 0.42, CI = 0.20-0.85). Additionally, severe insomnia was associated with "losing relatives or friends in the war" (OR = 3.01, CI = 1.41-6.44), and "losing connection with families and friends" (OR = 3.89, CI = 1.58-9.53). Conclusions: The implications of these results are profound, underscoring the immediate and imperative need for both medical and psychiatric interventions aimed at addressing the substantial psychological burden borne by this population because of the ongoing conflict.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mental health during armed conflicts is of paramount importance, as such situations often lead to increased risks of anxiety and depression symptoms among civilians. The military conflict between the Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces, which began on April 15, 2023, is currently ongoing mainly in Khartoum State. Despite the significant impact of the conflict on the region, there is a lack of data regarding the mental health status of the residents. The aim of this study is to assess anxiety and depression symptoms among residents of Khartoum State during the first months of the 2023 military conflict. METHOD We conducted a cross-sectional study among residents of Khartoum State between May 27 and June 19 using an online questionnaire. We used standardized screening questionnaires, namely the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) for anxiety and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depression. Multiple logistic regression was used to identify sociodemographic factors that are associated with anxiety and depression symptoms. RESULTS Out of the 393 participants in the study, 70% had symptoms suggestive of depression and 57.3% suffered from anxiety symptoms. Both anxiety and depression were associated with being female (p < 0.001). Being married was a predictor of anxiety (p = 0.028) but not depression (p = 0.3). Other predictors were not significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION High levels of anxiety and depression symptoms were prevalent among Khartoum residents during the conflict, with females and married individuals at higher risk. Immediate medical assessment is essential for identifying cases and providing support. Mental health services should be integrated into emergency response efforts, particularly focusing on vulnerable groups. Future research should address study limitations and explore coping strategies for anxiety and depression in Sudanese adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE We examined the correlates of disability among people with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and comorbid common mental disorders (CMDs) from rural India. METHODS The sample comprised 2,486 participants enrolled in a cluster randomized trial (cRCT), Healthier OPtions through Empowerment (HOPE). Participants were 30 years or older, with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, dysthymia, generalized anxiety disorder, and/or panic disorder on the MINI-International Neuropsychiatric Interview, with hypertension, diabetes, dsylipidemia and/ or ischemic heart disease. Disability was measured with the 12-item version of WHODAS 2.0. The severity of depression and anxiety was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), respectively. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine associations. RESULTS The mean age was 59 ± 10.0 years, three quarters (1864) of the participants were female, and 64.0% were married. More than half of the participants had no formal education (57.9%). Most of the participants had two or more chronic medical conditions (73.0%). The mean disability score was 24.3. The mean depression score was 8.5, and the mean anxiety score was 6.7. Higher levels of disability were reported by participants ≥ 60 years of age, those with moderate and severe depression, and moderate anxiety. Among female participants, being unmarried was associated with greater disability. Male participants without formal education reported greater levels of disability. CONCLUSION Higher severity of CMDs is significantly associated with higher levels of disability. For women, being unmarried and for men having no formal education was associated with higher levels of disability. Abstract
Sex differences in the effect of prolonged sitting time on anxiety symptoms have not yet been explored. This study examined the sex-specific association between prolonged sitting time and anxiety prevalence in Korean adults. Community-dwelling adults aged >18 years who underwent a cross-sectional structured study survey of physical activity and mental health tests were enrolled as part of the Kangbuk Samsung Hospital Cohort Study from 2012 to 2019. The prevalence of anxiety was evaluated using the Clinically Useful Anxiety Outcome Scale (CUXOS) questionnaire. The mean daily sitting time was 7.9 ± 3.4 h in men and 6.8 ± 3.6 h in women. After adjustments for possible confounding factors, the adjusted mean CUXOS score was the highest in participants sitting for ≥10 h, followed by 5-9 h, and <5 h, in that order. In the post-hoc Bonferroni analysis, there were significant differences in the adjusted mean CUXOS scores in group comparisons. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted after adjusting for potential confounding factors. A prolonged sitting time was positively associated with an increased prevalence of anxiety in both men and women, with stronger associations in women than in men. It is necessary to prevent anxiety by adjusting or reducing sitting time in adults, especially women.

This study aims to address this gap by assessing the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) as well as explore its association with students' sociodemographic factors and academic performance among medical students in a Saudi Arabian institute that has a diverse, multicultural student body. Methods The study takes place in a unique educational environment: a privately funded institute in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, with 32% of its student body comprising international students from over 40 countries, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study deploys the use of a survey that was sent to the students at this institute via their institutional emails. A survey containing 33 items assessing demographics, GAD using GAD-7 questionnaire, stress-relief measures, online learning experience during the pandemic, mental disorders, anxiety associated with the pandemic, two open-ended questions, and one item assessing sleep difficulty. Results The results of the survey showed that a significant majority of the responders' scores in the GAD-7 assessment were in the range of moderate to severe anxiety. The results also suggest that low cGPA and the first academic years are significantly associated with higher GAD-7 scores. Students found severe time constraints, difficult educational content, and lack of psychological support to be major sources of stress. Furthermore, students suggested providing an in-house psychologist, personalized feedback, and guidance on study tactics as methods to reduce anxiety. Conclusion These findings, among others, suggest a need for further studies and research in this field to uncover broader patterns and inform targeted mental health support strategies.

Abstract
Genetics research has potential to alleviate the burden of mental disorders in low- and middle-income-countries through identification of new mechanistic pathways which can lead to efficacious drugs or new drug targets. However, there is currently limited genetics data from Africa. The Uganda Genome Resource provides opportunity for psychiatric genetics research among underrepresented people from Africa. We aimed at determining the prevalence and correlates of major depressive disorder (MDD), suicidality, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), alcohol abuse, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and probable attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among participants of the Uganda Genome Resource. Standardised tools assessed for each mental disorder. Prevalence of each disorder was calculated with 95% confidence intervals. Multivariate logistic regression models evaluated the association between each mental disorder and associated demographic and clinical factors. Among 985 participants, prevalence of the disorders were: current MDD 19.3%, life-time MDD 23.3%, suicidality 10.6%, PTSD 3.1%, alcohol abuse 5.7%, GAD 12.9% and probable ADHD 9.2%. This is the first study to determine the prevalence of probable ADHD among adult Ugandans from a general population. We found significant association between sex and alcohol abuse (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 0.26 [0.14,0.45], p < 0.001) and GAD (AOR = 1.78 [1.09,2.49], p = 0.019) respectively. We also found significant association between body mass index and suicidality (AOR = 0.85 [0.73,0.99], p = 0.041), alcohol abuse (AOR = 0.86 [0.78,0.94], p = 0.003) and GAD (AOR = 0.93 [0.87,0.98], p = 0.008) respectively. We also found a significant association between high blood pressure and life-time MDD (AOR = 2.87 [1.08,7.66], p = 0.035) and probable ADHD (AOR = 1.99 [1.00,3.97], p = 0.050) respectively. We also found a statistically significant association between tobacco smoking and alcohol abuse (AOR = 3.2 [1.56,6.67], p = 0.002). We also found ever been married to be a risk factor for probable ADHD (AOR = 2.12 [0.88,5.14], p = 0.049). The Uganda Genome Resource presents opportunity for psychiatric genetics research among underrepresented people from Africa.

Abstract
Previous studies showed that glucose has beneficial effects on memory function and can enhance contextual fear learning. To derive potential therapeutic interventions, further research is needed regarding the effects of glucose on fear extinction. In two experimental studies with healthy participants (Study 1: N = 68, 39 females; Study 2: N = 89, 67 females), we investigated the effects of glucose on fear extinction learning and its consolidation. Participants completed a differential fear conditioning paradigm consisting of acquisition, extinction, and return of fear tests: reinstatement, and extinction recall. US-expectancy ratings, skin conductance response (SCR), and fear potentiated startle (FPS) were collected. Participants were pseudorandomized and double-blinded to one of two groups: They received either a drink containing glucose or saccharine 20 min before (Study 1) or immediately after extinction (Study 2). The glucose group showed a significantly stronger decrease in differential FPS during extinction (Study 1) and extinction recall (Study 2). Additionally, the glucose group showed a significantly lower contextual anxiety at test of reinstatement (Study 2). Our findings provide first evidence that glucose supports the process of fear extinction, and in particular the consolidation of fear extinction memory, and thus has potential as a beneficial adjuvant to extinction-based treatments. Abstract
BACKGROUND The emergence of cyclin-dependent kinases 4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i) represented a major breakthrough in the treatment of breast cancer over the past decade. In both clinical trials and real-world settings, it was observed that patients using CDK4/6i might experience psychiatric adverse events (PAEs). Herein, we conducted a pharmacovigilance study to comprehensively assess the correlation between CDK4/6i and PAEs. METHOD We obtained individual case safety reports submitted to the FDA Adverse Events Reporting System (FAERS) during the period from January 2015 to December 2023. In disproportionality analysis, the reporting odds ratio (ROR) and information component (IC) values were calculated for each adverse event-drug combination. Univariate logistic regression analysis was utilized to explore factors associated with PAEs following CDK4/6i treatment. RESULTS A total of 95,591 reports related to CDK4/6i were identified, with 6.72% reporting PAEs, and this proportion exhibited an annual upward trend. Based on the ROR and IC values, 17 categories of PAEs were defined as CDK4/6i-related PAEs. Among these PAEs, insomnia, stress, eating disorder, depressed mood, and sleep disorder were very common, each accounting for over 10% of CDK4/6i reports. Ribociclib showed the highest risk signal of CDK4/6i-related PAEs (ROR = 1.89[1.75-2.04], IC025 = 0.79), followed by palbociclib (ROR = 1.47[1.41-1.53], IC025 = 0.49), while abemaciclib did not exhibit a significant signal (ROR = 0.52[0.44-0.62], IC025 = -1.13). Female sex, younger age and weight exceeding 80 kg were significant risk factors for the incidence of CDK4/6i-related PAEs. CONCLUSIONS Using data from a real-world, large-scale spontaneous reporting system for adverse drug reactions, our study delineated the spectrum of PAEs to CDK4/6i. This potentially offered valuable insights for healthcare professionals to manage the risk of PAEs in patients receiving CDK4/6i treatment, particularly those with psychiatric disorders.
