Adhesion Evolution: Designing Smart Polymeric Adhesive Systems with On-Demand Reversible Switchability

Smart polymeric switchable adhesives represent a rapidly emerging class of advanced materials, exhibiting the ability to undergo on-demand transitioning between "On" and "Off" adhesion states. By selectively tuning external stimuli triggers (including temperature, light, electricity, magnetism, and chemical agents), we can engineer these materials to undergo reversible changes in their bonding capabilities. The strategic design selection of stimuli is a pivotal factor in the design of switchable adhesive systems. This review outlines recent advancements in the field of smart switchable polymeric adhesives over the past decade with a focus on the selection of stimulus triggers. These systems are further categorized into one of four adhesion switching mechanisms upon initiation by a specific stimuli-trigger: (i) interfacial adhesion, (ii) stiffness, (iii) contact area, or (iv) suction-based switching. Evaluation of adhesion switching performance across systems is primarily made based on three key metrics: (i) maximum adhesion strength, (ii) switch ratio, and (iii) switch time. Different stimuli and mechanisms offer distinct advantages and limitations, influencing the performance characteristics and applicability of these materials across domains such as detachable biomedical devices, robotic grippers, and climbing robots. This review thus offers a perspective on the present advancements and challenges in this emerging field, along with insights into future directions.

In Situ Structural Densification of Hydrogel Network and Its Interface with Electrodes for High-Performance Multimodal Artificial Skin

The multisensory responsiveness of hydrogels positions them as promising candidates for artificial skin, whereas the mismatch of modulus between soft hydrogels and hard electrodes as well as the poor adhesion and conductance at the interface greatly impairs the stability of electronics devices. Herein, we propose an in situ postprocessing approach utilizing electrochemical reactions between metals (Zn, etc.) and hydrogels to synergistically achieve strong adhesion of the hydrogel-electrode interface, low interfacial impedance, and local strain isolation due to the structural densification of the hydrogel network. The mechanism is that Zn electrochemically oxidizes to Zn2+ and injects into the hydrogel, gradually forming a mechanically interlocked structure, Zn2+-polymer dual-helix structural nodes, and a high-modulus ZnO from the surface to the interior. Compared to untreated samples, the treated sample displays 8.7 times increased interfacial adhesion energy between the hydrogel and electrode (87 J/m2), 95% decreased interfacial impedance (218.8 Ω), and a high-strain isolation efficiency (εtotal/εisolation > 400). Akin to human skin, the prepared sensor demonstrates multimodal sensing capabilities, encompassing highly sensitive strain perception and simultaneous perception of temperature, humidity, and oxygen content unaffected by strain interference. This easy on-chip preparation of hydrogel-based multimodal sensor array shows great potential for health and environment monitoring as artificial skin.

Rapid, Tough, and Trigger-Detachable Hydrogel Adhesion Enabled by Formation of Nanoparticles In Situ

Integrating hydrogel with other materials is always challenging due to the low mass content of hydrogels and the abundance of water at the interfaces. Adhesion through nanoparticles offers characteristics such as ease of use, reversibility, and universality, but still grapples with challenges like weak bonding. Here, a simple yet powerful strategy using the formation of nanoparticles in situ is reported, establishing strong interfacial adhesion between various hydrogels and substrates including elastomers, plastics, and biological tissue, even under wet conditions. The strong interfacial bonding can be formed in a short time (60 s), and gradually strengthened to 902 J m-2 adhesion energy within an hour. The interfacial layer's construction involves chain entanglement and other non-covalent interactions like coordination and hydrogen bonding. Unlike the permanent bonding seen in most synthetic adhesives, these nanoparticle adhesives can be efficiently triggered for removal by acidic solutions. The simplicity of the precursor diffusion and precipitation process in creating the interfacial layer ensures broad applicability to different substrates and nanoparticle adhesives without compromising robustness. The tough adhesion provided by nanoparticles allows the hydrogel-elastomer hybrid to function as a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), facilitating reliable electrical signal generation and output performance due to the robust interface.

Dynamic hydrogel-metal-organic framework system promotes bone regeneration in periodontitis through controlled drug delivery

Periodontitis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease, which leads to gradual degradation of alveolar bone. The challenges persist in achieving effective alveolar bone repair due to the unique bacterial microenvironment's impact on immune responses. This study explores a novel approach utilizing Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) (comprising magnesium and gallic acid) for promoting bone regeneration in periodontitis, which focuses on the physiological roles of magnesium ions in bone repair and gallic acid's antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties. However, the dynamic oral environment and irregular periodontal pockets pose challenges for sustained drug delivery. A smart responsive hydrogel system, integrating Carboxymethyl Chitosan (CMCS), Dextran (DEX) and 4-formylphenylboronic acid (4-FPBA) was designed to address this problem. The injectable self-healing hydrogel forms a dual-crosslinked network, incorporating the MOF and rendering its on-demand release sensitive to reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and pH levels of periodontitis. We seek to analyze the hydrogel's synergistic effects with MOFs in antibacterial functions, immunomodulation and promotion of bone regeneration in periodontitis. In vivo and in vitro experiment validated the system's efficacy in inhibiting inflammation-related genes and proteins expression to foster periodontal bone regeneration. This dynamic hydrogel system with MOFs, shows promise as a potential therapeutic avenue for addressing the challenges in bone regeneration in periodontitis.

Hydrogel Coatings of Implants for Pathological Bone Repair

Hydrogels are well-suited for biomedical applications due to their numerous advantages, such as excellent bioactivity, versatile physical and chemical properties, and effective drug delivery capabilities. Recently, hydrogel coatings have developed to functionalize bone implants which are biologically inert and cannot withstand the complex bone tissue repair microenvironment. These coatings have shown promise in addressing unique and pressing medical needs. This review begins with the major functionalized performance and interfacial bonding strategy of hydrogel coatings, with a focus on the novel external field response properties of the hydrogel. Recent advances in the fabrication strategies of hydrogel coatings and their use in the treatment of pathologic bone regeneration are highlighted. Finally, challenges and emerging trends in the evolution and application of physiological environment-responsive and external electric field-responsive hydrogel coatings for bone implants are discussed.

Natural Polymer-Polyphenol Bioadhesive Coacervate with Stable Wet Adhesion, Antibacterial Activity, and On-Demand Detachment

Medical adhesives are emerging as an important clinical tool as adjuvants for sutures and staples in wound closure and healing and in the achievement of hemostasis. However, clinical adhesives combining cytocompatibility, as well as strong and stable adhesion in physiological conditions, are still in demand. Herein, a mussel-inspired strategy is explored to produce adhesive coacervates using tannic acid (TA) and methacrylate pullulan (PUL-MA). TA|PUL-MA coacervates mainly comprise van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions. The methacrylic groups in the PUL backbone increase the number of interactions in the adhesives matrix, resulting in enhanced cohesion and adhesion strength (72.7 Jm-2), compared to the non-methacrylated coacervate. The adhesive properties are kept in physiologic-mimetic solutions (72.8 Jm-2) for 72 h. The photopolymerization of TA|PUL-MA enables the on-demand detachment of the adhesive. The poor cytocompatibility associated with the use of phenolic groups is here circumvented by mixing reactive oxygen species-degrading enzyme in the adhesive coacervate. This addition does not hamper the adhesive character of the materials, nor their anti-microbial or hemostatic properties. This affordable and straightforward methodology, together with the tailorable adhesivity even in wet environments, high cytocompatibility, and anti-bacterial activity, enables foresee TA|PUL-MA as a promising ready-to-use bioadhesive for biomedical applications.

Reversibly Sticking Metals and Graphite to Hydrogels and Tissues

We have discovered that hard, electrical conductors (e.g., metals or graphite) can be adhered to soft, aqueous materials (e.g., hydrogels, fruit, or animal tissue) without the use of an adhesive. The adhesion is induced by a low DC electric field. As an example, when 5 V DC is applied to graphite slabs spanning a tall cylindrical gel of acrylamide (AAm), a strong adhesion develops between the anode (+) and the gel in about 3 min. This adhesion endures after the field is removed, and we term it as hard-soft electroadhesion or EA[HS]. Depending on the material, adhesion occurs at the anode (+), cathode (-), or both electrodes. In many cases, EA[HS] can be reversed by reapplying the field with reversed polarity. Adhesion via EA[HS] to AAm gels follows the electrochemical series: e.g., it occurs with copper, lead, and tin but not nickel, iron, or zinc. We show that EA[HS] arises via electrochemical reactions that generate chemical bonds between the electrode and the polymers in the gel. EA[HS] can create new hybrid materials, thus enabling applications in robotics, energy storage, and biomedical implants. Interestingly, EA[HS] can even be achieved underwater, where typical adhesives cannot be used.

Progress of polysaccharide-based tissue adhesives

Recently, polymer-based tissue adhesives (TAs) have gained the attention of scientists and industries as alternatives to sutures for sealing and closing wounds or incisions because of their ease of use, low cost, minimal tissue damage, and short application time. However, poor mechanical properties and weak adhesion strength limit the application of TAs, although numerous studies have attempted to develop new TAs with enhanced performance. Therefore, next-generation TAs with improved multifunctional properties are required. In this review, we address the requirements of polymeric TAs, adhesive characteristics, adhesion strength assessment methods, adhesion mechanisms, applications, advantages and disadvantages, and commercial products of polysaccharide (PS)-based TAs, including chitosan (CS), alginate (AL), dextran (DE), and hyaluronic acid (HA). Additionally, future perspectives are discussed.

Universal adhesion using mussel foot protein inspired hydrogel with dynamic interpenetration for topological entanglement

Achieving adhesion of hydrogels to universal materials with desirable strength remains a challenge despite emerging application of hydrogels. Herein we present a mussel foot protein (Mfp) inspired polyelectrolyte hydrogel of poly(ethylenimine)/poly(acrylic acid)-dopamine (PEI/PAADA) developed for universal tough adhesion. The highly-concentrated electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions in PEI/PAADA hydrogel resulted in a tensile strength, strain at break, and toughness of 0.297 MPa, 2784 % and 5.440 MJ m-3, respectively. Moreover, the hydrogel can heal itself from physical damages, even can be recycled after totally dried via rehydration because of the high flexibility and reversibility of its dynamic bonds. Combining the strategies of topological stitching and direct bonding, Mfp-derived catechol and PEI/PAA backbone in PEI/PAADA corporately facilitated robust adhesion of universal materials with shear strength of up to 4.4 MPa and peeling strength of 870 J m-2, which is over 10 times greater than that of commercial fibrin gel. The adhesive also exhibited self-healing capability for at least 5 cycles, good stability in 1 M NaCl solution and characteristic debonding catalyzed by calcium. Moreover, in vitro cell behavior and in vivo wound healing assays suggested the potential of PEI/PAADA as wound dressing.

Peeling-Stiffening Self-Adhesive Ionogel with Superhigh Interfacial Toughness

Self-adhesive materials that can directly adhere to diverse solid surfaces are indispensable in modern life and technologies. However, it remains a challenge to develop self-adhesive materials with strong adhesion while maintaining its intrinsic softness for efficient tackiness. Here, a peeling-stiffening self-adhesive ionogel that reconciles the seemingly contradictory properties of softness and strong adhesion is reported. The ionogel contains two ionophilic repeating units with distinct associating affinities, which allows to adaptively wet rough surface in the soft dissipating state for adhering, and to dramatically stiffen to the glassy state upon peeling. The corresponding modulus increases by 117 times driven by strain-rate-induced phase separation, which greatly suppresses crack propagation and results in a super high interfacial toughness of 8046 J m-2 . The self-adhesive ionogel is also transparent, self-healable, recyclable, and can be easily removed by simple moisture treatment. This strategy provides a new way to design high-performance self-adhesive materials for intelligent soft devices.

Conductive, water-retaining and knittable hydrogel fiber from xanthan gum and aniline tetramer modified-polysaccharide for strain and pressure sensors

Herein, we explored strategies for defoaming and controllable adjustment of spinnable and mechanical properties of polyanion polysaccharide-based hydrogels to fabricate conductive, water-retaining, and knittable hydrogel fibers for next-generation flexible electronics. Xanthan gum (XG) and aniline tetramer modified-polysaccharide (TMAT38) were crosslinked with sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) and subsequently by Fe3+/Fe2+ ions coordination to prepare conductive and spinnable hydrogels. Polypropylene glycol was introduced as chemical antifoam, and solvent displacement method was adopted to improve mechanical and water-retaining properties. The glycerol-immersed XG5-TMAT38-STMP-Fe3+/CA-PPG hydrogel exhibited conductivity of 3.55×10-3-27.30×10-3 S/cm, storage modulus at linear viscoelastic region of 573 Pa-1717 Pa and self-healing percentage of 100 %-108 %. The 2 h glycerol-immersed hydrogel fibers with good flexibility, moisture retention and freezing tolerance were ready to bend and knit into fabrics. The hydrogel fiber braid possessed better conductivity, reliability and durability than the single hydrogel fiber as strain sensors. The hydrogel fiber fabric perceived tiny vibration triggered by swallowing, speaking and writing with good sensitivity and reproducibility. Furthermore, a three-component model was developed to evaluate response sensitivity and recoverability of the hydrogel fiber fabric-based pressure sensors, which facilitated understanding transient response of polymer-based hydrogel strain and pressure sensors.

Corrosion-tailoring, osteogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial aspirin-loaded organometallic hydrogel composite coating on biodegradable Zn for orthopedic applications

Zn and its alloys are receiving increasing interest for biodegradable orthopedic implant applications owing to their moderate corrosion rate and the potential functionality of Zn2+. However, their non-uniform corrosion behavior and insufficient osteogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties do not meet the comprehensive requirements of orthopedic implants in clinical use. Herein, an aspirin (an acetylsalicylic acid, ASA, 10, 50, 100, and 500 mg/L)-loaded carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC)/gelatin (Gel)-Zn2+ organometallic hydrogel composite coating (CMC/Gel&Zn2+/ASA) was fabricated on a Zn surface via an alternating dip-coating method, aiming to obtain a material with these comprehensive properties improved. The organometallic hydrogel composite coatings, ca. 12-16 μm in thickness, showed compact, homogeneous, and micro-bulge structured surface morphology. The coatings protected well the Zn substrate from pitting/localized corrosion and contained the release of the bioactive components, Zn2+ and ASA, in a sustained and stable manner in long-term in vitro immersions in Hank's solution. The coated Zn showed greater ability to promote proliferation and osteogenic differentiation for MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts, and better anti-inflammatory capacity when compared with uncoated Zn. Additionally, this coating displayed excellent antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli (>99 % antibacterial rate) and Staphylococcus aureus (>98 % antibacterial rate). Such appealing properties can be attributed to the compositional nature of the coating, namely the sustained release of Zn2+ and ASA, as well as the surface physiochemical properties because of its unique microstructure. This organometallic hydrogel composite coating can be considered a promising option for the surface modification of biodegradable Zn-based orthopedic implants among others.

High-Performance Supramolecular Organogel Adhesives for Antimicrobial Applications in Diverse Conditions

Supramolecular organogel coatings that can disinfect the deposited microbial pathogens are emerging as an effective vehicle to prevent pathogen transmission. However, the development of anti-pathogen supramolecular adhesives with mechanical robustness and controlled oil inclusion is technically challenging. Here, we report supramolecular adhesives with mechanical integrity and robust interfacial adhesion over a wide range of biogenic antimicrobial oil. Bifunctional monomers are synthesized and assembled into linear polymers with semicrystalline stackings through hierarchical hydrogen bonds, where incorporated bioactive oil could regulate the semicrystalline stackings into nanosized crystalline domains through intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The abundant bonding motifs provided by the supramolecular cross-linked networks could accommodate oil molecules with high inclusion capability and provide more interfacial binding sites with high adhesion strength, and the nanosized crystalline domains could stabilize the organogel network and compensate for the interactions with oil molecules to enhance structural and mechanical stability. In addition, rapid healing, robust adhesion, and antimicrobial and antiviral properties of the resultant organogel coatings are demonstrated. This study paves the way for the development of high-performance antimicrobial supramolecular adhesives with controlled oil inclusion, showing potential applications in soft robotics, tissue engineering, and biomedical devices.

Octacalcium Phosphate-Laden Hydrogels on 3D-Printed Titanium Biomaterials Improve Corrosion Resistance in Simulated Biological Media

The inflammatory-associated corrosion of metallic dental and orthopedic implants causes significant complications, which may result in the implant's failure. The corrosion resistance can be improved with coatings and surface treatments, but at the same time, it might affect the ability of metallic implants to undergo proper osteointegration. In this work, alginate hydrogels with and without octacalcium phosphate (OCP) were made on 3D-printed (patterned) titanium alloys (Ti Group 2 and Ti-Al-V Group 23) to enhance their anticorrosion properties in simulated normal, inflammatory, and severe inflammatory conditions in vitro. Alginate (Alg) and OCP-laden alginate (Alg/OCP) hydrogels were manufactured on the surface of 3D-printed Ti substrates and were characterized with wettability analysis, XRD, and FTIR. The electrochemical characterization of the samples was carried out with open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was observed that the hydrophilicity of Alg/OCP coatings was higher than that of pure Alg and that OCP phase crystallinity was increased when samples were subjected to simulated biological media. The corrosion resistance of uncoated and coated samples was lower in inflammatory and severe inflammatory environments vs. normal media, but the hydrogel coatings on 3D-printed Ti layers moved the corrosion potential towards more nobler values, reducing the corrosion current density in all simulated solutions. These measurements revealed that OCP particles in the Alg hydrogel matrix noticeably increased the electrical charge transfer resistance at the substrate and coating interface more than with Alg hydrogel alone.

Simple and Rapid Way to a Multifunctionally Conductive Hydrogel for Wearable Strain Sensors

Conductive hydrogels have gained increasing attention in the field of wearable smart devices. However, it remains a big challenge to develop a multifunctionally conductive hydrogel in a rapid and facile way. Herein, a conductive tannic acid-iron/poly (acrylic acid) hydrogel was synthesized within 30 s at ambient temperature by the tannic acid-iron (TA@Fe3+)-mediated dynamic catalytic system. The TA@Fe3+ dynamic redox autocatalytic pair could efficiently activate the ammonium persulfate to initiate the free-radical polymerization, allowing the gelation to occur easily and rapidly. The resulting hydrogel exhibited enhanced stretchability (3560%), conductivity (33.58 S/m), and strain sensitivity (gauge factor = 2.11). When damaged, it could be self-healed through the dynamic and reversible coordination bonds between the Fe3+ and COO- groups in the hydrogel network. Interestingly, the resulting hydrogel could act as a strain sensor to monitor various human motions including the huge movement of deformations (knuckle, wrist) and subtle motions (smiling, breathing) in real time due to its enhanced self-adhesion, good conductivity, and improved strain sensitivity. Also, the obtained hydrogel exhibited efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance with an EMI shielding effectiveness value of 24.5 dB in the X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz). Additionally, it displayed antibacterial properties, with the help of the activity of TA.

Deep Eutectic Solvents-based Ionogels with Ultrafast Gelation and High Adhesion in Harsh Environments

Adhesive materials have recently drawn intensive attention due to their excellent sealing ability, thereby stimulating advances in materials science and industrial usage. However, reported adhesives usually exhibit weak adhesion strength, require high pressure for strong bonding, and display severe adhesion deterioration in various harsh environments. In this work, instead of water or organic solvents, a deep eutectic solution (DES) was used as the medium for photopolymerization of zwitterionic and polarized monomers, thus generating a novel ionogel with tunable mechanical properties. Multiple hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions between DES and monomers facilitated ultrafast gelation and instant bonding without any external pressure, which was rarely reported previously. Furthermore, high adhesion in different harsh environments (e.g., water, acidic and basic buffers, and saline solutions) and onto hydrophilic (e.g., glass and tissues) and hydrophobic (e.g., polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, and polypropylene) adherends was demonstrated. Also, high stretchability of the ionogel at extreme temperatures (-80 and 80 °C) indicated its widespread applications. Furthermore, the biocompatible ionogel showed high burst pressure onto stomach and intestine tissues to prevent liquid leakage, highlighting its potential as an adhesive patch. This ionogel provides unprecedented opportunities in the fields of packaging industry, marine engineering, medical adhesives, and electronic assembly.

Strong, Chemically Stable, and Enzymatically On-Demand Detachable Hydrogel Adhesion Using Protein Crosslink

Achieving strong adhesion between hydrogels and diverse materials is greatly significant for emerging technologies yet remains challenging. Existing methods using non-covalent bonds have limited pH and ion stability, while those using covalent bonds typically lack on-demand detachment capability, limiting their applications. In this study, a general strategy of covalent bond-based and detachable adhesion by incorporating amine-rich proteins in various hydrogels and inducing the interfacial crosslinking of the hydrogels using a protein-crosslinking agent is demonstrated. The protein crosslink offers topological adhesion and can reach a strong adhesion energy of ≈750 J m^-2 . The chemistry of the adhesion is characterized and that the inclusion of proteins inside the hydrogels does not alter the hydrogels' properties is shown. The adhesion remains intact after treating the adhered hydrogels with various pH solutions and ions, even at an elevated temperature. The detachment is triggered by treating proteinase solution at the bonding front, causing the digestion of proteins, thus breaking up the interfacial crosslink network. In addition, that this approach can be used to adhere hydrogels to diverse dry surfaces, including glass, elastomers and plastics, is shown. The stable chemistry of protein crosslinks opens the door for various applications in a wide range of chemical environments.

Fully recyclable multifunctional adhesive with high durability, transparency, flame retardancy, and harsh-environment resistance

Recyclable/reversible adhesives have attracted growing attention for sustainability and intelligence but suffer from low adhesion strength and poor durability in complex conditions. Here, we demonstrate an aromatic siloxane adhesive that exploits stimuli-responsive reversible assembly driven by π-π stacking, allowing for elimination and activation of interfacial interactions via infiltration-volatilization of ethanol. The robust cohesive energy from water-insensitive siloxane assembly enables durable strong adhesion (3.5 MPa shear strength on glasses) on diverse surfaces. Long-term adhesion performances are realized in underwater, salt, and acid/alkali solutions (pH 1-14) and at low/high temperatures (-10-90°C). With reversible assembly/disassembly, the adhesive is closed-loop recycled (~100%) and reused over 100 times without adhesion loss. Furthermore, the adhesive has unique combinations of high transparency (~98% in the visible light region of 400-800 nm) and flame retardancy. The experiments and theoretical calculations reveal the corresponding mechanism at the molecular level. This π-π stacking-driven siloxane assembly strategy opens up an avenue for high-performance adhesives with circular life and multifunctional integration.

Bio-Inspired Imprinting Materials for Biomedical Applications

Inspired by the recognition mechanism of biological molecules, molecular imprinting techniques (MITs) are imparted with numerous merits like excellent stability, recognition specificity, adsorption properties, and easy synthesis processes, and thus broaden the avenues for convenient fabrication protocol of bio-inspired molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with desirable functions to satisfy the extensive demands of biomedical applications. Herein, the recent research progress made with respect to bio-inspired imprinting materials is discussed in this review. First, the underlying mechanism and basic components of a typical molecular imprinting procedure are briefly explored. Then, emphasis is put on the introduction of diverse MITs and novel bio-inspired imprinting materials. Following these two sections, practical applications of MIPs in the field of biomedical science are focused on. Last but not least, perspectives on the remaining challenges and future development of bio-inspired imprinting materials are presented.

Robust Natural Polyphenolic Adhesives against Various Harsh Environments

Although adhesive hydrogels have been extensively explored, the development of adhesives with long-term strong adhesion capacity under various harsh environments is still met with profound challenges such as sophisticated preparation, long-term curing, and low bonding strength. Herein, a series of robust adhesive hydrogels have been developed via the polyphenol-epoxy-cross-linking (PEC) reactions between natural polyphenols (extracts) and epoxy glycidyl ethers. The as-prepared natural polyphenolic adhesive hydrogels could induce strong adhesion onto several kinds of typical substrates (i.e., wood, glass, paper, PET, PMMA, and Fe) under both dry and wet conditions based on multi-interactions. Moreover, those natural polyphenolic adhesives exhibited good low-temperature and solvent resistance performances, which could be widely used in different kinds of device repairment (i.e., chemical, petroleum, wood, metal, glass, plastic, rubber, and other industries) under different conditions. This work could provide new opportunities toward natural-inspired robust adhesives in various fields ranging from chemical transportation, industrial manufacturing, architectural design, and marine engineering to daily life.

Freeze-derived heterogeneous structural color films

Structural colors have a demonstrated value in constructing various functional materials. Efforts in this area are devoted to developing stratagem for generating heterogeneous structurally colored materials with new architectures and functions. Here, inspired by icing process in nature and ice-templating technologies, we present freeze-derived heterogeneous structural color hydrogels with multiscale structural and functional features. We find that the space-occupying effect of ice crystals is helpful for tuning the distance of non-close-packed colloidal crystal nanoparticles, resulting in corresponding reflection wavelength shifts in the icing area. Thus, by effectively controlling the growth of ice crystals and photo-polymerizing them, structural color hydrogels with the desired structures and morphologies can be customized. Other than traditional monochromatic structure color hydrogels, the resultant hydrogels can be imparted with heterogeneous structured multi-compartment body and multi-color with designed patterns through varying the freezing area design. Based on these features, we have also explored the potential value of these heterotypic structural color hydrogels for information encryptions and decryptions by creating spatiotemporally controlled icing areas. We believe that these inverse ice-template structural color hydrogels will offer new routes for the construction and modulation of next generation smart materials with desired complex architectures.

Stiffness Variable Polymers Comprising Phase-Changing Side-Chains: Material Syntheses and Application Explorations

Stiffness variable materials have been applied in a variety of engineering fields that require adaptation, automatic modulation, and morphing because of their unique property to switch between a rigid, load-bearing state and a soft, compliant state. Stiffness variable polymers comprising phase-changing side-chains (s-SVPs) have densely grafted, highly crystallizable long alkyl side-chains in a crosslinked network. Such a bottlebrush network-like structure gives rise to rigidity modulation as a result of the reversible crystallization and melting of the side chains. The corresponding modulus changes can be more than 1000-fold within a narrow temperature span, from ≈10²  MPa to ≈10²  kPa or lower. Other important properties of the s-SVP, such as stretchability, optical transmittance, and adhesion, can also be altered. This work reviews the underlying molecular mechanisms in the s-SVP's, discusses the material's structure-property relationship, and summarizes important applications explored so far, including reversible shape transformation, bistable electromechanical transduction, optical modulation, and reversible adhesion.

Tough, Instant, and Repeatable Adhesion of Self-Healable Elastomers to Diverse Soft and Hard Surfaces

Repeatability and high adhesion toughness are usually contradictory for common polymer adhesives. Repeatability requires temporary interactions between the adhesive and the substrate, while high adhesion toughness is usually achieved by permanent bonding. Integrating these two features into one adhesive system is still a daunting challenge. Here, the development of a series of viscoelastic elastomers composed of a soft and hard segment is reported, which exhibit tough, instant, yet repeatable adhesion to a variety of soft and hard surfaces. Such a combination of mutually exclusive properties is attributed to the synergy of high mobility of polymer chains and massive viscoelastic dissipation of the elastomers around the interface. By optimizing the relaxation time and mechanical dissipation, the resulting adhesives can achieve a tough yet repeatable adhesion toughness above 2000 J m^-2 , superior to the best-in-class commercial adhesives. Numerous acrylate monomers are proven applicable to the preparation of such adhesives, validating the universality of the fabrication method. The application of these elastomers as adhesive and protective layers in soft electronics by virtue of their universal and tough adhesion to various soft and hard substrates is also demonstrated.

Research Progress on Hydrogel-Elastomer Adhesion

Hydrophilic hydrogels exhibit good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, whereas hydrophobic elastomers show excellent stability, mechanical firmness, and waterproofing in various environments. Hydrogel-elastomer hybrid material devices show varied application prospects in the field of bioelectronics. In this paper, the research progress in hydrogel-elastomer adhesion in recent years, including the hydrogel-elastomer adhesion mechanism, adhesion method, and applications in the bioelectronics field, is reviewed. Finally, the research status of adhesion between hydrogels and elastomers is presented.

A Shape-Programmable Hierarchical Fibrous Membrane Composite System to Promote Wound Healing in Diabetic Patients

Chronic wound infection is one of the critical complications of diabetes and is difficult to cure. Although great efforts have been made, the development of special dressings that serve as therapeutic strategies to effectively promote wound healing in diabetic individuals remains a major challenge. In this study, a shape-programmable hierarchical fibrous membrane composite system is developed for synergistic modulation of the inflammatory microenvironment to treat chronically infected wounds. The system comprises a functional layer and a shape-programmable backing layer. A temperature-responsive shape-memory mechanism achieves biaxial mechanically active contractions of diabetic wounds in a programmable manner. To summarize, the membrane system combines antimicrobial activity, controlled drug release according to the need of wound healing, mechanical modulation with shape-programmable, robust adhesion, and on-demand debonding to biological tissue to rationally guide chronic wound management. A synergistic combination of antibacterial fiber network and released drugs shows broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. In vitro and in vivo evaluations indicate the dressing efficiency in promoting and supporting wound healing. The insights from this study demonstrate the effectiveness of a hierarchical composite membrane system with shape-programmability as a potential treatment in the care of diabetic wounds.

A Universal Strategy for Growing a Tenacious Hydrogel Coating from a Sticky Initiation Layer

Controllably coating the surfaces of substrates/medical devices with hydrogels exhibits great application potential, but lacks universal techniques. Herein, a new method, namely ultraviolet-triggered surface catalytically initiated radical polymerization (UV-SCIRP) from a sticky initiation layer (SIL) (SIL@UV-SCIRP), is proposed for growing hydrogel coatings. The method involves three key steps: 1) depositing a sticky polydopamine/Fe³⁺ coating on the surface of the substrates-SIL, 2) reducing Fe³⁺ ions to Fe²⁺ ions as active catalysts by UV illumination with the assistance of citric acid, and 3) conducting SCIRP in a monomer solution at room temperature for growing hydrogel coatings. In this manner, practically any substrate's surface (natural or artificial materials) can be modified by hydrogel coatings with controllable thickness and diverse compositions. The hydrogel coatings exhibit good interface bonding with the substrates and enable easy changes in their wettability and lubrication performances. Importantly, this novel method facilitates the smooth growth of uniform hydrogel lubrication coatings on the surface of a range of medical devices with complex geometries. Finally, as a proof-of-concept, the slippery balls coated with hydrogel exhibited smooth movement within the catheter and esophagus. Hence, this method can prove to be a pioneering universal modification tool, especially in surface/interface science and engineering.

Self-Bonded Hydrogel Inverse Opal Particles as Sprayed Flexible Patch for Wound Healing

Wound healing is an important issue for regenerative medicine. Attempts in this area tend to develop functional wound patches to promote the healing. Here, we present self-bonded hydrogel inverse opal particles as sprayed flexible patch for wound healing. Such particles were fabricated by infusing drugs-loaded gelatin (GT) and carrageenan (CG) pregel into inverse opal scaffolds, which were composed of biocompatible hyaluronic acid methacryloyl (HAMA) and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) with graphene oxide quantum dots (GO QDs) doping. Due to the photothermal conversion capability of GO QDs and temperature reversible phase-changing performance of GT/CG, the hybrid particles could undergo GT/CG liquid transformation under the near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, which made them adhere to each other and finally form a flexible patch. Following by the phase-change of GT/CG hydrogel, the encapsulated drugs were also controllably released from the inverse opal scaffold. As the inverse opal scaffolds of the hybrid particles were maintained, their drug release induced refractive index changes could be detected as visual structural color shifting, which could be utilized to monitor their delivery processes. Based on these features, we have demonstrated that the self-bonded particles, administered in the form of spray, could be applied for wound tissue healing and drug delivery monitoring. These results indicate that the self-bonded hydrogel particles have potential value as a multifunctional patch for clinical applications.

Electrostatic Interaction-Based High Tissue Adhesive, Stretchable Microelectrode Arrays for the Electrophysiological Interface

The drift or fall of stretchable neural microelectrodes from the surface of wet and dynamic tissues severely hampers the adoption of microelectrodes for electrophysiological signal monitoring. Endowing the stretchable electrodes with adhesive ability is an effective way to overcome these problems. Current adhesives form tough adhesion to tissues by covalent interaction, which decreases the biocompatibility of the adhesives. Here, we fabricate a strong electrostatic adhesive (noncovalent interaction), highly conformal, stretchable microelectrode arrays (MEAs) for the electrophysiological interface. This MEA was composed of polypyrrole (PPy) as the electrode material and hydrogel as the stretchable substrate [the cross-linked and copolymerized hydrogel of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), gelatin, chitosan, 2-methoxyethyl acrylate, and acrylic acid is named PAGMA]. Strong and stable electrostatic adhesion (85 kPa) and high stretchability (100%) allow for the integration of PPy MEAs based on the PAGMA hydrogel substrate (PPy-PAGMA MEAs) on diverse wet dynamic tissues. Additionally, by adjusting the concentration of AMPS in PAGMA, the hydrogel (PAGMA-1) can produce tough adhesion to many inorganic and elastomer materials. Finally, the PPy-PAGMA MEAs were toughly and conformally adhered on the rat's subcutaneous muscle and beating heart, and the rat's electrophysiological signals were successfully recorded. The development of these adhesive MEAs offers a promising strategy to establish stable and compliant electrode-tissue interfaces.

Synergetic Chemistry and Interface Engineering of Hydrogel Electrolyte to Strengthen Durability of Solid-State Zn-Air Batteries

For the challenging pursuit of high energy efficiency and mechanical tolerance in flexible solid-state Zn-air batteries (FSZABs), a hydrogel electrolyte (HE) consisting of dual-network crosslinked polyacrylic acid-Fe³⁺ -chitosan (PAA-Fe³⁺ -CS) polymer host infiltrated with a mixed aqueous electrolyte of NH₄ Cl and ZnCl₂ is developed. The absorbed near-neutral electrolyte renders the HE high ionic conductivity but low corrosiveness to both electrocatalysts and Zn metal anode (ZMA), ensuring more stable Zn-OH-O₂ chemistry compared to that in strong alkaline electrolyte and thus endowing the assembled FSZABs with a landmark cycle life up to 120 h (5 mA cm^-2 ). More intriguingly, the CS molecular beams introduced into the PAA hydrogel backbone will precipitate and fold subjecting to the Hofmeister effect when saturated with the near-neutral electrolyte, which can effectively enhance the interfacial adhesion strength of the HE on both air cathode and ZMA, achieving reliable and robust bonding between them. Thus, the FSZABs simultaneously exhibited a superior tolerance to repeated mechanical deformation during operation, allowing more than 360 continuous bending-recovery cycles without any decline in voltage efficiency. The ingenious chemistry and interface synergetic engineering on the crucial HEs provides a rational methodology to realize boosted electrochemical and mechanical durability of FSZABs forward for future practical implementation.

Mucosa-Like Conformal Hydrogel Coating for Aqueous Lubrication

Mucosa is a protective and lubricating barrier in biological tissue, which has a great clinical inspiration because of its slippery, soft, and hydrophilic surface. However, mimicking mucosal traits on complex surface remains an enormous challenge. Herein, a novel approach to create mucosa-like conformal hydrogel coating is developed. A thin conformal hydrogel layer mimicking the epithelial layer is obtained by first absorbing micelles, followed by forming covalent interlinks with the polymer substrate via interface-initiated hydrogel polymerization. The resulting coating exhibits uniform thickness (≈15 µm), mucosa-matched compliance (Young's modulus = 1.1 ± 0.1 kPa) and lubrication (coefficients of friction = 0.018 ± 0.003), robust interfacial bonding against peeling (peeling strength = 1218.0 ± 187.9 J m^-2 ), as well as high water absorption capacity. It effectively resists adhesion of proteins and bacteria without compromising biocompatibility. As demonstrated by an in vivo cynomolgus monkey model and clinical trial, applications of the mucosa-like conformal hydrogel coating on the endotracheal tube significantly reduce intubation-related complications, such as invasive stimuli, mucosal lesions, laryngeal edema, inflammation, and postoperative pain. This work offers a promising prototype for surface decoration of biomedical devices and holds great prospects for clinical translation to enable interventional operations with minimally invasive impacts.

Robust, anti-freezing and conductive bonding of chitosan-based double-network hydrogels for stable-performance flexible electronic

Unstable hydrogel-substrate interfaces and defunctionalization at low temperature severely restrict versatile applications of hydrogel-based systems. Herein, various chitosan-polyacrylamide double-network (CS-PAM DN) ionic hydrogels were chemically linked with diverse substrates to construct robust and anti-freezing hydrogel-substrate combination, wherein the destructible CS physical network rendered effective energy dissipation mechanism to significantly enhanced the cohesion of hydrogels and the covalent linkage between PAM network with substrate surface strongly improved the interfacial adhesion. The synergistic effects enabled the CS-PAM DN hydrogels to be tightly bonded on diverse metals and inorganics. Impressively, the hydrogel-substrate combinations were freezing tolerant to well-maintain high interfacial toughness at low temperature. Notably, due to the high toughness and conductivity of hydrogel-metal interface, the hydrogel-metal combination can be utilized as a multi-model flexible sensor to detect strain and pressure within broad temperature range. This work may provide a platform for construction and emerging application of robust, anti-freezing and stable-performance hydrogel-based systems.

Bioactive Coatings on Titanium: A Review on Hydroxylation, Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) and Surface Modification Strategies

Titanium (Ti) and its alloys have been demonstrated over the last decades to play an important role as inert materials in the field of orthopedic and dental implants. Nevertheless, with the widespread use of Ti, implant-associated rejection issues have arisen. To overcome these problems, antibacterial properties, fast and adequate osseointegration and long-term stability are essential features. Indeed, surface modification is currently presented as a versatile strategy for developing Ti coatings with all these challenging requirements and achieve a successful performance of the implant. Numerous approaches have been investigated to obtain stable and well-organized Ti coatings that promote the tailoring of surface chemical functionalization regardless of the geometry and shape of the implant. However, among all the approaches available in the literature to functionalize the Ti surface, a promising strategy is the combination of surface pre-activation treatments typically followed by the development of intermediate anchoring layers (self-assembled monolayers, SAMs) that serve as the supporting linkage of a final active layer. Therefore, this paper aims to review the latest approaches in the biomedical area to obtain bioactive coatings onto Ti surfaces with a special focus on (i) the most employed methods for Ti surface hydroxylation, (ii) SAMs-mediated active coatings development, and (iii) the latest advances in active agent immobilization and polymeric coatings for controlled release on Ti surfaces.

Dually cross-linked single network poly(ionic liquid)/ionic liquid ionogels for a flexible strain-humidity bimodal sensor

Gel electrolytes have aroused extensive interest for diverse flexible electronics due to their high ionic conductivity and inherent stretchability. However, gel electrolytes still face challenges in terms of mechanical properties, fatigue resistance, and environmental adaptation, which severely limit the practical application of gel-based electronics. In this paper, we have synthesized a novel polymerizable ionic liquid [SBMA][AA] by mixing zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate with acrylic acid. Then a dually cross-linked single network poly(ionic liquid)/ionic liquid (DCSN PIL/IL) ionogel was prepared by a simple one-step photopolymerization of the [SBMA][AA] in another IL 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanoamide ([EmIm][DCA]). The synergistic effect between covalent crosslinking and dynamic physical crosslinking points endows the ionogel with good mechanical properties as well as outstanding fatigue resistance. Gratifyingly, the entrapment of [EmIm][DCA] in the ionogel matrix yields excellent environmental adaptability and high ionic conductivity. Meanwhile, the DCSN PIL/IL ionogel also exhibited strong adhesive capacity due to the abundance of carboxyl and sulphonic acid groups. The outstanding electromechanical properties make the DCSN PIL/IL ionogel a perfect candidate for strain sensors to monitor diverse human body activities, such as the movement of the thumb knuckle and handwriting. Interestingly, the DCSN PIL/IL ionogel also displayed high responsiveness to humidity. Therefore, it is believed that this DCSN PIL/IL ionogel offers a broad prospect in flexible strain-humidity bimodal sensors.

3D-Printed Reinforcement Scaffolds with Targeted Biodegradation Properties for the Tissue Engineering of Articular Cartilage

Achieving regeneration of articular cartilage is challenging due to the low healing capacity of the tissue. Appropriate selection of cell source, hydrogel, and scaffold materials are critical to obtain good integration and long-term stability of implants in native tissues. Specifically, biomechanical stability and in vivo integration can be improved if the rate of degradation of the scaffold material matches the stiffening of the sample by extracellular matrix secretion of the encapsulated cells. To this end, a novel 3D-printed lactide copolymer is presented as a reinforcement scaffold for an enzymatically crosslinked hyaluronic acid hydrogel. In this system, the biodegradable properties of the reinforced scaffold are matched to the matrix deposition of articular chondrocytes embedded in the hydrogel. The lactide reinforcement provides stability to the soft hydrogel in the early stages, allowing the composite to be directly implanted in vivo with no need for a preculture period. Compared to pure cellular hydrogels, maturation and matrix secretion remain unaffected by the reinforced scaffold. Furthermore, excellent biocompatibility and production of glycosaminoglycans and collagens are observed at all timepoints. Finally, in vivo subcutaneous implantation in nude mice shows cartilage-like tissue maturation, indicating the possibility for the use of these composite materials in one-step surgical procedures.

Biomimetic Joint Paint for Efficient Cartilage Repair by Simultaneously Regulating Cartilage Degeneration and Regeneration in Pigs

Irregular partial-thickness cartilage defect is a common pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA) with no available treatment in clinical practice. Currently, cartilage tissue engineering is only suitable for a limited area of full-thickness cartilage defect. Here, we design a biomimetic joint paint for the intractable partial-thickness cartilage defect repair. The joint paint, composed of a bridging layer of chondroitin sulfate and a surface layer of gelatin methacrylate with hyaluronic acid, can quickly and tightly adhere to the cartilage defect by light activation. Being treated by the joint paint, the group of rabbit and pig models with partial-thickness cartilage defects showed a restoration of a smooth cartilage surface and the preservation of normal glycosaminoglycan content, whereas the untreated control group exhibited serious progressive OA development. This paint treatment functions by prohibiting chondrocyte apoptosis, maintaining chondrocyte phenotype, and preserving the content of glycosaminoglycan in the partial-thickness cartilage defects. These findings illustrated that the biomimetic joint paint is an effective and revolutionary therapeutics for the patients with noncurable partial-thickness cartilage defects.

Polymer Network Editing of Elastomers for Robust Underwater Adhesion and Tough Bonding to Diverse Surfaces

Tough adhesives with robust adhesion are desperately needed for biomedical and technological applications. However, it is extremely challenging to engineer tough and durable adhesives that are simple to make yet also exhibit strong underwater adhesion as well as tough bonding to diverse surfaces. Here, we report bioinspired elastomers based on water-immiscible polydiolcitrates, where their tough mechanical properties, robust underwater adhesion (80 kPa), and tough bonding performance (with an interfacial toughness >1000 J m^-2 and a shear and tensile strength >0.5 MPa) to diverse solid materials (glass, ceramics, and steel) are actuated by the incorporation of trace amounts of additives. The additives could edit the polymer networks during the elastomer polymerization by dramatically regulating the cross-linking structures of covalent and reversible bonds, the length of polymer chains, and the hydrophobic and hydrophilic motifs, which markedly tuned the mechanical and adhesive properties of the bioelastomers. We also demonstrate versatile applications of the durable elastomers, as tough flexible joints for solid materials, superglue, tissue sealants, hemostatic dressing, and wound repair.

Multifaceted Design and Emerging Applications of Tissue Adhesives

Tissue adhesives can form appreciable adhesion with tissues and have found clinical use in a variety of medical settings such as wound closure, surgical sealants, regenerative medicine, and device attachment. The advantages of tissue adhesives include ease of implementation, rapid application, mitigation of tissue damage, and compatibility with minimally invasive procedures. The field of tissue adhesives is rapidly evolving, leading to tissue adhesives with superior mechanical properties and advanced functionality. Such adhesives enable new applications ranging from mobile health to cancer treatment. To provide guidelines for the rational design of tissue adhesives, here, existing strategies for tissue adhesives are synthesized into a multifaceted design, which comprises three design elements: the tissue, the adhesive surface, and the adhesive matrix. The mechanical, chemical, and biological considerations associated with each design element are reviewed. Throughout the report, the limitations of existing tissue adhesives and immediate opportunities for improvement are discussed. The recent progress of tissue adhesives in topical and implantable applications is highlighted, and then future directions toward next-generation tissue adhesives are outlined. The development of tissue adhesives will fuse disciplines and make broad impacts in engineering and medicine.

Renatured hydrogel painting

Hydrogel coatings pave an avenue for improving the lubricity, biocompatibility, and flexibility of solid surfaces. From the viewpoint of practical applications, this work establishes a scalable method to firmly adhere hydrogel layers to diverse solid surfaces. The strategy, termed as renatured hydrogel painting (RHP), refers to adhering dehydrated xerogel to a surface with appropriate glues, followed by the formation of a hydrogel layer after rehydration of the xerogel. With the benefits of simplicity and generality, this strategy can be readily applied to different hydrogel systems, no matter what the substrate is. Hydrogel adhesion is demonstrated by its tolerance against mechanical impact with hydrodynamic shearing at 14 m/s. This method affords powerful supplements to renew the surface chemistry and physical properties of solid substrates. In addition, we show that the RHP technique can be applied to living tissue, with potential for clinical applications such as the protection of bone tissue.

Tough Adhesion of Freezing- and Drying-Tolerant Transparent Nanocomposite Organohydrogels

Tough hydrogels with strong wet adhesion have drawn extensive attention for various applications. However, it is still challenging to achieve both excellent wet adhesion and freezing- and drying-tolerance in hydrogels. In this study, we present tough transparent nanocomposite organohydrogels based on the glycerol-water binary solvent system in the presence of Al(OH)₃ nanoparticles as a cross-linker. The resultant organohydrogels exhibited excellent tensile strength (∼0.9 MPa), high transparency (97%), superior anti-drying and anti-freezing properties, and good ionic conductivity. In particular, polyacrylic acid (PAA) was chosen as the bridging polymer to endow the organohydrogels with strong wet adhesion. The interfacial adhesion energy exceeded 2200 J m^-2, which was ascribed to the synergy of ionic coordination and hydrogen bonds between the nanoparticles and carboxyl groups in PAA chains. Interestingly, based on the strong wet adhesion, the transparent organohydrogels can be assembled into hydraulically driven soft variable-focus lenses with long-term ambient stability. This work will provide a new insight into controlled wet adhesion ̵of hydrogel and have great potential for hydrogel-based functional devices with long-term ambient stability.

A Superstrong and Reversible Ionic Crystal-Based Adhesive Inspired by Ice Adhesion

In this study, we developed a superstrong and reversible adhesive, which can possess a high bonding strength in the "adhesive" state and detach with the application of heating. An ionic crystal (IC) gel, in which an IC was immobilized within a soft-polymer matrix, were synthesized via in situ photo-crosslinking of a precursor solution composed of N, N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMAA) and a melted IC. The obtained IC gel is homogenous and transparent at melt point. When cooled to the phase transition temperature of the IC, the gel turns into the adhesive with the adhesion strength of 5.82 MPa (on glasses), due to the excellent wetting of melted gel and a thin layer of crystalline IC with high cohesive strength formed on the substrates. The synergistic effects between IC, polymer networks and substrates were investigated by solid state ¹ H NMR and molecular dynamics simulation. Such an adhesive layer is reversable and can be detached by heating and subsequent re-adhesion via cooling. This study proposed the new design of removable adhesives, which can be used in dynamic and complex environments.

Bioinspired tough gel sheath for robust and versatile surface functionalization

Sutures pervade surgeries, but their performance is limited by the mechanical mismatch with tissues and the lack of advanced functionality. Existing modification strategies result in either deterioration of suture's bulk properties or a weak coating susceptible to rupture or delamination. Inspired by tendon endotenon sheath, we report a versatile strategy to functionalize fiber-based devices such as sutures. This strategy seamlessly unites surgical sutures, tough gel sheath, and various functional materials. Robust modification is demonstrated with strong interfacial adhesion (>2000 J m-2). The surface stiffness, friction, and drag of the suture when interfacing with tissues can be markedly reduced, without compromising the tensile strength. Versatile functionalization of the suture for infection prevention, wound monitoring, drug delivery, and near-infrared imaging is then presented. This platform technology is applicable to other fiber-based devices and foreseen to affect broad technological areas ranging from wound management to smart textiles.

Engineering Hydrogel Adhesion for Biomedical Applications via Chemical Design of the Junction

Hydrogel adhesion inherently relies on engineering the contact surface at soft and hydrated interfaces. Upon contact, adhesion normally occurs through the formation of chemical or physical interactions between the disparate surfaces. The ability to form these adhesion junctions is challenging for hydrogels as the interfaces are wet and deformable and often contain low densities of functional groups. In this Review, we link the design of the binding chemistries or adhesion junctions, whether covalent, dynamic covalent, supramolecular, or physical, to the emergent adhesive properties of soft and hydrated interfaces. Wet adhesion is useful for bonding to or between tissues and implants for a range of biomedical applications. We highlight several recent and emerging adhesive hydrogels for use in biomedicine in the context of efficient junction design. The main focus is on engineering hydrogel adhesion through molecular design of the junctions to tailor the adhesion strength, reversibility, stability, and response to environmental stimuli.
