Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore effective exercise types for reducing chronic inflammation in individuals with overweight and obesity (IOO) while accounting for confounders. METHODS A systematic search for RCTs in English between January 2000 and August 2023 was conducted to evaluating exercise effects on inflammatory biomarkers in IOO. A network meta-analysis conducted. RESULTS A total of 123 RCTs were analyzed. Different exercise type yielded distinct effects on various inflammatory biomarkers. Specifically, aerobic exercise combined with resistance training (COM) and aerobic exercise (AE) were the most effective for improving leptin levels. AE exhibited the greatest effectiveness in reducing CRP and increasing adiponectin. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) was identified as the most effective exercise modality for ameliorating IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10. Resistance training (RT) had the least effect compared to other exercise types. Meta regression and subgroup analyses revealed that high-intensity AE demonstrated a greater effect size compared to moderate-intensity AE. The impact of AE on IL-10 was positively associated with both the training period and the age of participants. Positive correlations were observed between reductions in body fat and the effect sizes of CRP, TNF-α, and IL-10. Gender influenced AE effects on IL-6 and TNF-α, with females responding better. CONCLUSION This study highlights the potential of exercise in alleviating the inflammatory status in IOO, with different exercise types showing various effects on specific inflammatory biomarkers. The intensity and duration of exercise had a dose-response relationship with intervention effectiveness. Changes in body composition correlated with the effectiveness of the intervention. COM, AE, and HIIT are recommended exercise approaches.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We need to better understand how the menstrual cycle interacts with other biological systems, such the inflammation and immune response. One way to study this interaction is through C-reactive protein (CRP). Studies of CRP concentrations across the menstrual cycle have been inconsistent. This study explores menstrual cycle CRP variation in two geographically different samples of Polish and Polish American individuals. METHODS Analyses were conducted on 76 Polish and 22 Polish American daily urine samples collected on the first day of menstruation until the start of their next period. CRP, estrone-3-glucuronide, and pregnanediol-3-glucuronide were assayed. Sample-specific linear mixed models were used to examine cycle effects and median CRP concentrations across cycle phases and between the start of menses and remainder of the cycle were compared using Kruskal-Wallace and Dunn tests. RESULTS Polish and Polish American samples had distinct menstrual cycle CRP phenotypes. The Polish sample did not show cycle effects. The Polish American LMM demonstrated that CRP decreases after the first 3 days of menses (estimate -0.17, t-value -5.2). The KW and Dunn tests supported this. CRP concentrations were higher during the early follicular (median 0.406, p < 0.05), specifically the first 3 days of menstruation (median 0.466, p < 0.01), and lower in the luteal (median 0.277, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that changes in CRP during menstrual cycle are not universal across populations. In the Polish American sample, CRP was highest during the early follicular, specifically the first 3 days of menstruation, suggesting a potential relationship between the menstrual cycle and inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to determine the association of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). METHODS We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science were searched from the establishment of the database to May 5, 2022 to find the relevant studies. The quality of the included literature was evaluated with the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS). The results are reflected in the form of standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS Finally, six articles were included in our study. Compared with healthy controls, patients' NLR levels were significantly higher (SMD = 0.47; CI 95% = 0.30-0.65, p<0.001). The included studies were not statistically heterogeneous (I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.60); thus, the analysis used the fixed-effect model. The pooled sensitivity of NLR was 0.69 (95% CI 0.60-0.67), and the pooled specificity was 0.59 (95% CI 0.50-0.67). The pooled positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) of NLR were 1.71(95%CI 1.48-1.98), 0.50 (95%CI 0.41-0.62), and 3.38 (95%CI 2.57-4.44), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest NLR to be a potential marker of NAION, while also implicating a role for inflammation in underlying pathophysiology.

Abstract
RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE Body mass index (BMI) is an independent predictor of kidney disease progression in individuals with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Adipocytes do not simply act as a fat reservoir but are active endocrine organs. We hypothesized that greater visceral abdominal adiposity would associate with more rapid kidney growth in ADPKD and influence the efficacy of tolvaptan. STUDY DESIGN A retrospective cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS 1,053 patients enrolled in the TEMPO 3:4 tolvaptan trial with ADPKD and at high risk of rapid disease progression. PREDICTOR Estimates of visceral adiposity extracted from coronal plane magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans using deep learning. OUTCOME Annual change in total kidney volume (TKV) and effect of tolvaptan on kidney growth. ANALYTICAL APPROACH Multinomial logistic regression and linear mixed models. RESULTS In fully adjusted models, the highest tertile of visceral adiposity was associated with greater odds of annual change in TKV of≥7% versus<5% (odds ratio [OR], 4.78 [95% CI, 3.03-7.47]). The association was stronger in women than men (interaction P<0.01). In linear mixed models with an outcome of percent change in TKV per year, tolvaptan efficacy (% change in TKV) was reduced with higher visceral adiposity (3-way interaction of treatment ∗ time ∗ visceral adiposity, P=0.002). Visceral adiposity significantly improved classification performance of predicting rapid annual percent change in TKV for individuals with a normal BMI (DeLong's test z score: -2.03; P=0.04). Greater visceral adiposity was not associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) slope in the overall cohort; however, visceral adiposity was associated with more rapid decline in eGFR slope (below the median) in women (fully adjusted OR, 1.06 [95% CI, 1.01-1.11] per 10 unit increase in visceral adiposity) but not men (OR, 0.98 [95% CI, 0.95-1.02]). LIMITATIONS Retrospective; rapid progressors; computational demand of deep learning. CONCLUSIONS Visceral adiposity that can be quantified by MRI in the coronal plane using a deep learning segmentation model independently associates with more rapid kidney growth and improves classification of rapid progression in individuals with a normal BMI. Tolvaptan efficacy decreases with increasing visceral adiposity. PLAIN-LANGUAGE SUMMARY We analyzed images from a previous study with the drug tolvaptan conducted in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) to measure the amount of fat tissue surrounding the kidneys (visceral fat). We had previously shown body mass index can predict kidney growth in this population; now we determined whether visceral fat was an important factor associated with kidney growth. Using a machine learning tool to automate measurement of fat in images, we observed that visceral fat was independently associated with kidney growth, that it was a better predictor of faster kidney growth in lean patients than body mass index, and that having more visceral fat made treatment of ADPKD with tolvaptan less effective.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the associations of abnormal maternal glucose regulation in pregnancy with offspring adiposity, insulin resistance, adipokine, and inflammatory markers during childhood and adolescence. STUDY DESIGN Project Viva is a prospective prebirth cohort (n = 2128 live births) initiated from 1999 through 2002 in Eastern Massachusetts, US. During the second trimester of pregnancy, clinicians used 2-step oral glucose challenge testing to screen for gestational diabetes mellitus. In the offspring, we measured anthropometry, insulin resistance, adipokines, lipids, and inflammatory markers in mid-childhood (n = 1107), early adolescence (n = 1027), and mid-adolescence (n = 693). We used multivariable linear regression models and generalized estimating equations adjusted for child age and sex, and for maternal age, race/ethnicity, education, parity, and smoking during pregnancy; we further adjusted for prepregnancy body mass index (BMI). RESULTS In mid-adolescence (17.1 [0.8] years of age), offspring of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (n = 27) had a higher BMI z-score (β; 95% Cl; 0.41 SD; 0.00, 0.82), sum of skinfolds (8.15 mm; 2.48, 13.82), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (0.81 units; 0.13, 1.50), leptin z-score (0.40 SD; 0.01, 0.78), and leptin/adiponectin ratio z-score (0.51 SD; CI 0.09, 0.93) compared with offspring of mothers with normoglycemia (multivariable-adjusted models). The associations with BMI, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance, and adiponectin seemed stronger in mid-adolescence compared with earlier time points. The associations were attenuated toward the null after adjustment for maternal prepregnancy BMI. CONCLUSION Exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with higher adiposity, insulin resistance, and altered adipokines in mid-adolescence. Our findings suggest that the peripubertal period could be a key time for the emergence of prenatally programmed metabolic abnormalities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are high in people with serious mental illness (SMI). This problem is mediated, at least in part, by metabolic side effects of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) and by unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. We asked whether oral glucose tolerance testing (oGTT) or hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is superior in identifying people with SMI at high cardiometabolic risk and whether this risk is shaped by mood, cognition, or lifestyle habits. METHODS We evaluated 40 patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective, or bipolar disorder receiving SGAs by oGTT, HbA1c, comprehensive metabolic and lipid panels, and CRP. Mood was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and cognition was assessed using the Saint Louis University Mental Status examination. Diet was assessed using the UK Diabetes and Diet Questionnaire (UKDDQ), and physical activity was assessed using daily step counts. RESULTS Most patients had prediabetes (preDM) or diabetes mellitus (DM), 72.5% by oGTT, and 52.5% by HbA1c criteria. Pulse rates and insulin resistance indices (Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance, HOMA IR; Matsuda) were significantly different between patients classified as normal or with preDM/DM, using either oGTT or HbA1c criteria. Patients with preDM/DM by HbA1c but not oGTT criteria also had higher waist/hip ratios, triglyceride, and CRP levels (p<0.05). A strong negative correlation was found between average daily step counts and CRP levels (rho = -0.62, p<0.001). Higher UKDDQ scores, or unhealthier diet habits, were associated with higher fasting plasma glucose (rho = 0.28, p = 0.08), triglyceride levels (rho = 0.31, p = 0.05), and insulin resistance (HOMA IR: rho = 0.31, p = 0.06). Higher PHQ-9 scores correlated with lower 2h-oGTT glucose levels (rho = -0.37, p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS OGTT screening is superior to HbA1c screening in detecting preDM and DM early. Patients identified with preDM/DM by oGTT or HbA1c screening are insulin-resistant and have higher pulse rates. Abdominal obesity, unfavorable lipid profiles, and higher CRP levels were noted in patients screened by HbA1c, but not by oGTT. Low physical activity, low depression scores, and unhealthy diet habits were associated with higher CRP and higher glucose and triglyceride levels, respectively. Future studies should assess the impact of specifically tailored individual lifestyle counseling and medical management interventions in this high-risk population.

Abstract
Objective Depression and obesity are highly comorbid conditions with shared biological mechanisms. It remains unclear how depressive symptoms and body mass index (BMI) interact in relation to inflammation. This cross-sectional study investigated the independent associations of depressive symptoms and BMI with high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), as well as the moderating role of BMI on the depressive symptoms-hs-CRP association. Methods Participants (n = 8827) from the 2015-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys were aged ≥20 with a BMI ≥18.5 kg/m2, completed the Depression Screener, and had hs-CRP data. Multivariable linear regression was used to analyze hs-CRP in relation to depressive symptoms and BMI. An interaction term was included to examine whether the depressive symptoms-hs-CRP relationship differs depending on BMI. Results There was a slight, albeit non-significant, increase in hs-CRP levels with each one-point increase in depressive symptoms (aCoef.Estm. = 0.01, 95% CI = -0.05, 0.06, p = 0.754). Participants with overweight (aCoef.Estm. = 1.07, 95% CI = 0.61, 1.53, p < 0.001) or obese (aCoef.Estm. = 3.51, 95% CI = 3.04, 3.98, p < 0.001) BMIs had higher mean hs-CRP levels than those with a healthy BMI. There were no significant interactions between depressive symptoms and overweight (aCoef.Estm. = 0.04, 95% CI = -0.04, 0.13, p = 0.278) or obese (aCoef.Estm. = 0.11, 95% CI = -0.01, 0.22, p = 0.066) BMI indicating a lack of difference in the depressive symptoms-hs-CRP association across participants in the healthy versus overweight and obese ranges. Conclusions This study suggests that BMI might not act as a moderator in the association between depressive symptoms and hs-CRP. Results should be replicated in larger samples. Further research is warranted to understand underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammatory biomarkers may differentiate clinical disorders, which could lead to more targeted interventions. Analyses within a clinical sample (May et al., 2021) revealed that females with substance use disorders (SUD) exhibited lower C-reactive protein (CRP) and higher interleukin (IL)-8 and -10 concentrations than females without SUD who met criteria for mood/anxiety disorders. We aimed to replicate these findings in a new sample. METHODS Hypotheses and analyses were preregistered. Treatment-seeking individuals with mood/anxiety disorders and/or SUD (N = 184) completed a blood draw, clinical interview, and questionnaires. Participants were categorized as SUD+ (45F, 43M) and SUD- (78F, 18M). Principal component analysis (PCA) of questionnaire data resulted in two factors reflecting appetitive and aversive emotional states. SUD group and nuisance covariates (PCA factors, age, body mass index [BMI], medication, nicotine [and hormones in females]) predicted biomarker concentrations (CRP, IL-8, and IL-10) in regressions. RESULTS In females, the omnibus CRP model [F(8, 114) = 8.02, p <.001, R²-adjusted =.32] indicated that SUD+ exhibited lower CRP concentrations than SUD- (β = -.33, t = -3.09, p =.002, 95% CI [-.54, -.12]) and greater BMI was associated with higher CRP levels (β =.58, t = 7.17, p <.001, 95% CI [.42,.74]). SUD+ exhibited higher IL-8 levels than SUD- in simple but not omnibus regression models. CONCLUSION Findings across two samples bolster confidence that females with SUD show attenuated CRP-indexed inflammation. As SUD+ comorbidity was high, replication is warranted with respect to specific SUD classes (i.e., stimulants versus cannabis).

Abstract
Objective Obesity is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Understanding the associations between comprehensive health parameters and body mass index (BMI) may lead to targeted prevention efforts. Methods Project Baseline Health Study (PBHS) participants were divided into six BMI categories: underweight (BMI <18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2), overweight (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m2), class I obesity (30-34.9 kg/m2), class II obesity (35-39.9 kg/m2), and class III obesity (BMI ≥40 kg/m2). Demographic, cardiometabolic, mental health, and physical health parameters were compared across BMI categories, and multivariable logistic regression models were fit to evaluate associations. Results A total of 2,493 PBHS participants were evaluated. The mean age was 50±17.2 years; 55 % were female, 12 % Hispanic, 16 % Black, and 10 % Asian. The average BMI was 28.4 kg/m2±6.9. The distribution of BMI by age group was comparable to the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset. The obesity categories had higher proportions of participants with CAC scores >0, hypertension, diabetes, lower HDL-C, lower vitamin D, higher triglycerides, higher hsCRP, lower mean step counts, higher mean PHQ-9 scores, and higher mean GAD-7 scores. Conclusion We identified associations of cardiometabolic and mental health characteristics with BMI, thereby providing a deeper understanding of cardiovascular health across BMI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity and postprandial hypertriglyceridemia, characterized by an increase in triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs), cause chronic low-grade inflammation. It is unclear how postprandial TRLs affect inflammation in white adipocytes. OBJECTIVES The objectives of the study were to explore the inflammatory response of postprandial TRLs in white adipocytes and investigate the possible mechanism. METHODS We measured postprandial triglyceride (TG) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) concentrations in 204 recruited subjects and treated white adipocytes from mice with postprandial TRLs from above patients with hypertriglyceridemia. RESULTS Serum hsCRP concentrations and BMI were positively related to TG concentrations in the postprandial state. Postprandial TRLs increased mRNA and protein expression of inflammatory factors, including interleukin-1β, via the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3)/Caspase-1 pathway, and impaired autophagy flux in white adipocytes of mice. TRLs also induced lysosomal damage as evidenced by the reduced protein expression of lysosome-associated membrane proteins-1 and Cathepsin L. Inhibition of Cathepsin B, NLRP3, and mTOR signaling improved autophagy/lysosome dysfunction and inhibited the activation of the NLRP3/Caspase-1 pathway and inflammatory factors induced by TRLs in white adipocytes. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that postprandial hypertriglyceridemia causes chronic inflammation in adipocytes through TRL-induced lysosomal dysfunction and impaired autophagic flux in an mTOR-dependent manner.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low-grade inflammation and stress oxidative condition play a role in the pathogenesis of obesity, and the serum levels of these markers, such as pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and uric acid may indicate obesity progression. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between obesity with PAB, hs-CRP, and uric acid in the Iranian population. METHODS This study was derived from the Mashhad Stroke and Heart Atherosclerotic Disorder (MASHAD) study. A total of 7985 subjects aged 35 to 65 years were divided into three groups according to body mass index (BMI) as: normal, overweight and obese groups. Anthropometric indices and biochemical parameters such as PAB, superoxide dismutase type 1 (SOD1), hs-CRP, and uric acid were measured in all the participants. We evaluated the association of obesity with inflammatory factors by using multivariate regression analysis. Also, those participants with hypertension, an endocrine disorder, history of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus were excluded from the study. RESULTS There was a positive significant correlation between BMI and serum PAB, hs-CRP and uric acid (p < 0.001). While no statistically significant relation was observed between BMI and SOD1 (p = 0.85). Multivariate regression analysis showed that the risk of overweight and obesity increased 1.02 and 1.03-fold according to increase 10 units of PAB raise in comparison to reference group (normal weight) [(odds ratio (OR): 1.02, 95% CI (1.01-1.03)] and [OR: 1.03, 95% CI (1.01-1.04)], respectively). In addition, hs-CRP serum concentration was significantly associated with a high risk of obesity [(OR: 1.02; 95% CI (1.01-1.03)]. While the high levels of serum uric acid were associated with increased odds of overweight and obesity risk [OR: 1.4; CI (1.39-1.58) and OR: 1.76; CI (1.63-1.89), respectively]. CONCLUSIONS Generally, we showed a significant association between BMI and serum PAB, hs-CRP values and uric acid levels, suggesting the role of these factors as risk stratification factors for obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To compare presence and levels of serum cytokines in smokers and non-smokers with periodontitis following periodontal therapy. METHODS Thirty heavy smokers and 30 non-smokers with stage III or IV periodontitis were included in this prospective cohort study. Clinical data and blood serum were collected at baseline (T0), after step I-III (T1), and after 12 months step IV periodontal therapy (T2). Cytokine IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, IL-10, and IP-10 levels were measured using multiplex kit Bio-Plex Human Pro™ Assay. Linear regression models with cluster robust variance estimates to adjust for repeated observations were used to test intra- and intergroup levels for each marker, IL-6 and IL-8 defined as primary outcomes. RESULTS Clinical outcomes improved in both groups following therapy (p < 0.05). IL-6 levels increased with 75.0% from T0-T2 among smokers (p = 0.004). No significant intra- or intergroup differences were observed for IL-8. Higher levels of TNF-α (44.1%) and IL-10 (50.6%) were detected in smokers compared with non-smokers at T1 (p = 0.007 and p = 0.037, respectively). From T1-T2, differences in mean change over time for levels of TNF-α and IL-10 were observed in smokers compared with non-smokers (p = 0.005 and p = 0.008, respectively). CONCLUSION Upregulated levels of serum cytokines in smokers indicate a systemic effect of smoking following periodontal therapy. Differences in cytokine levels between smokers and non-smokers demonstrate a smoking induced modulation of specific systemic immunological responses in patients with severe periodontitis.

Abstract
Observational studies have shown associations between circulating levels of various biomarkers (eg, total cholesterol [TC], low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL], insulin-like growth factor-1 [IGF-1], C-reactive protein [CRP] and glycated hemoglobin-1c [HbA1c]) and the risk of invasive breast cancer (IBC). Ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast (DCIS) is a nonobligate precursor of IBC and shares several risk factors with it. However, the relationship between these biomarkers and DCIS risk remains unexplored. We studied the association between circulating levels of TC, LDL-C, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), Lipoprotein (a) (Lp-(a)), IGF-1, CRP and HbA1c, with the risk of DCIS in 156801women aged 40 to 69 years and breast cancer-free at enrolment when blood samples and information on demographic and health-related factors were collected. Incident cases of DCIS were ascertained during the follow-up via linkage to the UK cancer registries Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations of interest. In all, 969 DCIS incident cases were diagnosed during 11.4 years of follow-up. Total cholesterol was inversely associated with the risk of DCIS (HRquintile(Q)5vsQ1 = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.27-0.82, Ptrend = .008). Conversely, LDL-C was positively associated with DCIS risk (HRQ3vsQ1 = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.01-2.04, HRQ4vsQ1 = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.04-2.47, HRQ5vsQ1 = 2.29, 95% CI: 1.36-3.88, Ptrend = .004). In postmenopausal women, CRP had a weak positive association with DCIS risk, while HbA1c showed a nonlinear association with the risk. These results, in conjunction with those from previous studies on IBC, provide support for the association of several biomarkers with the risk of an early stage of breast cancer.

Abstract
Background Obesity is expected to hinder efferocytosis due to ADAM17-mediated cleavage of the MER tyrosine kinase receptor, producing soluble MER (sMER) that disrupts MERTK binding to cell death markers. However, the intracellular efferocytosis pathway in central obesity remains elusive, particularly the role of low-grade chronic inflammation in its initiation and identification of binding signals that disrupt efferocytosis. Objective We investigate the efferocytosis signaling pathway in men with central obesity and its relationship with inflammation, cell death, and related processes. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted, and clinical data and blood samples were collected from 56 men with central obesity (obese group) and 29 nonobese individuals (control group). Clinical evaluations and predefined biochemical screening tests were performed. The efferocytosis signaling pathway was investigated by measuring phosphatidylserine (PS), ADAM17, TNF-alpha (TNF-α), and sMER. Results Metabolic syndrome was detected in more than half of the participants in the obese group according to the predefined tests. Mean levels of PS, TNF-α, and sMER were higher in the obese group but not significantly different from those of the control group. Further analysis based on waist circumference (WC) ranges in the obese group revealed a significant increase in PS and sMER levels between the control group and the obese group with WC greater than 120 cm. ADAM17 levels were significantly higher in the obese group than in the control group. PS was positively correlated with WC and ADAM17. ADAM17 was positively correlated with TNF-α and sMER, indicating impaired efferocytosis. Conclusions Central obesity appeared to cause a disturbance in efferocytosis that began with cell damage and death, along with an enlargement of the WC and an ongoing inflammatory response. Efferocytosis was disrupted by proinflammatory cytokine regulators, which induced the production of sMER and interfered with the efferocytosis process.

Abstract
A large proportion of patients with severe obesity remain with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction after bariatric surgery. We assessed whether preoperative evaluation by echocardiography and inflammatory proteins can identify this high-risk group. In the Bariatric Surgery on the West Coast of Norway study, 75 patients (44 ± 10 years, body mass index [BMI] 41.5 ± 4.7 kg/m2) were prospectively evaluated by echocardiography and inflammatory proteins (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein [hsCRP], serum amyloid A [SAA] and calprotectin) before and one year after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. LV mechanics was assessed by the midwall shortening (MWS) and global longitudinal strain (GLS). Bariatric surgery improved BMI and GLS, and lowered hsCRP, calprotectin and SAA (p < 0.05). MWS remained unchanged and 35% of patients had impaired MWS at 1-year follow-up. A preoperative risk index including sex, hypertension, ejection fraction (EF) and high hsCRP (index 1) or SAA (index 2) predicted low 1-year MWS with 81% sensitivity/71% specificity (index 1), and 77% sensitivity/77% specificity (index 2) in ROC analyses (AUC 0.80 and 0.79, p < 0.001). Among individuals with severe obesity, women and patients with hypertension, increased serum levels of inflammatory proteins and reduced EF are at high risk of impaired LV midwall mechanics 1 year after bariatric surgery.ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT01533142 February 15, 2012.

Abstract
Fatty acids (FAs) are known to play an important role in human metabolism; however, still little is known about the functions of certain FA classes present in blood at relatively low concentrations. Examples of such compounds include branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs). Recently, lowered BCFAs blood concentration was noticed in obese patients. An inverse correlation was found between serum concentrations of BCFAs and triglyceride levels, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration. Obesity is the most frequently observed component of metabolic syndrome and both disorders are accompanied by the dysregulation of FAs metabolism. However, not all of them are well understood. Our study is the first attempt at presenting the opposite effects of an iso-BCFA (14-methylpentadecanoic acid, 14-MPA) and an anteiso-BCFA (12-methyltetradecanoic acid, 12-MTA) on selected genes related to fatty acid synthesis and inflammation: FASN, SREBP1, CRP, and IL-6 in the HepG2 cell line. We observed lowered expression of FASN, SREBP1, CRP, and IL-6 in cells treated with 14-MPA in comparison with control cells. In contrast, supplementation with 12-MTA caused opposite effects: increased mRNA levels of FASN, CRP, and IL-6. 12-MTA did not influence SREBP1 expression. The results of our preliminary study may suggest potential benefits of the supplementation of iso-BCFAs in obese patients, for inflammation and hypertriglyceridemia prevention.

Abstract
Obesity and metabolic syndrome involve chronic low-grade inflammation called metabolic inflammation as well as metabolic derangements from increased endotoxin and free fatty acids. It is debated whether the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in monocytic cells can contribute to amplify metabolic inflammation; if so, by which mechanism(s). To test this, metabolic stress was induced in THP-1 cells and primary human monocytes by treatments with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), palmitic acid (PA), or oleic acid (OA), in the presence or absence of the ER stressor thapsigargin (TG). Gene expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and markers of ER/oxidative stress were determined by qRT-PCR, TNF-α protein by ELISA, reactive oxygen species (ROS) by DCFH-DA assay, hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α), p38, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-1,2, and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) phosphorylation by immunoblotting, and insulin sensitivity by glucose-uptake assay. Regarding clinical analyses, adipose TNF-α was assessed using qRT-PCR/IHC and plasma TNF-α, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), malondialdehyde (MDA), and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OX-LDL) via ELISA. We found that the cooperative interaction between metabolic and ER stresses promoted TNF-α, ROS, CCAAT-enhancer-binding protein homologous protein (CHOP), activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6), superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) expression (p ≤ 0.0183),. However, glucose uptake was not impaired. TNF-α amplification was dependent on HIF-1α stabilization and p38 MAPK/p65 NF-κB phosphorylation, while the MAPK/NF-κB pathway inhibitors and antioxidants/ROS scavengers such as curcumin, allopurinol, and apocynin attenuated the TNF-α production (p ≤ 0.05). Individuals with obesity displayed increased adipose TNF-α gene/protein expression as well as elevated plasma levels of TNF-α, CRP, MDA, and OX-LDL (p ≤ 0.05). Our findings support a metabolic-ER stress cooperativity model, favoring inflammation by triggering TNF-α production via the ROS/CHOP/HIF-1α and MAPK/NF-κB dependent mechanisms. This study also highlights the therapeutic potential of antioxidants in inflammatory conditions involving metabolic/ER stresses.

Abstract
Objective Several studies have reported an increase in platelet (PLT) count with chronic inflammation in the presence of obesity. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an important marker for PLT activity. Our study aims to demonstrate if laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has any effect on PLT, MPV and white blood cells (WBCs). Methods A total of 202 patients undergoing LSG for morbid obesity between January 2019 and March 2020 who completed at least 1 year of follow-up were included in the study. Patients' characteristics and laboratory parameters were recorded preoperatively and were compared in the 6th and 12th months. Results Two hundred and two patients (50% - female) with a mean age of 37.5 ± 12.2 years and mean pre-operative body mass index (BMI) of 43 (34.1-62.5) kg/m2 underwent LSG. BMI regressed to 28.2 ± 4.5 kg/m2 at 1 year after LSG (P < 0.001). The mean PLT count, MPV and WBC during the pre-operative period were 293.2 ± 70.3 103 cells/μL, 10.22 ± 0.9 fL and 7.8 ± 1.9 103 cells/μL, respectively. A significant decrease was seen in mean PLT count, with 257.3 ± 54.2 103cell/μL (P < 0.001) at 1 year post-LSG. The mean MPV was increased at 6 months 10.5 ± 1.2 fL (P < 0.001) and remained unchanged at 1 year 10.3 ± 1.3 fL (P = 0.9). The mean WBC levels were significantly decreased with 6.5 ± 1.7 103 cells/μL (P < 0.001) at 1 year. At the end of the follow-up, weight loss showed no correlation with PLT and MPV (P = 0.42, P = 0.32). Conclusion Our study has shown a significant decrease in circulating PLT and WBC levels while MPV remained unchanged after LSG.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The associations of body composition markers derived from different modalities with inflammatory markers are unclear. The aim of this study was to determine associations of the body composition markers from different modalities with inflammatory markers in a population-based study. METHODS AND RESULTS We analyzed data from 4048 participants (2081 women, 51.4%) aged 20-84 years. Linear regression models adjusted for confounding were used to analyze the association of classic anthropometry markers, absolute and relative fat mass, absolute fat-free mass (FFM), and body cell mass (BCM) assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis, subcutaneous, visceral, and liver fat from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with markers of inflammation. We found positive associations of classic anthropometry markers, total body fat, subcutaneous, visceral, and liver fat, with all inflammatory markers. Waist circumference (WC) showed the strongest association with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) (β: 1.39; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.22 to 1.56) and white blood cell (WBC) (0.39; 0.29 to 0.48), whereas visceral fat showed the strongest association with ferritin (41.9; 34.7 to 49.0). Relative body fat was strongly associated with hsCRP (1.39; 1.20 to 1.58), fibrinogen (0.29; 0.27 to 0.32), and WBC (0.35; 0.25 to 0.46). Conversely, we found inverse associations of body height, FFM, and BCM with hsCRP, fibrinogen, and WBC. CONCLUSIONS Our study indicates the importance of WC as an easily measured marker for early inflammation. MRI-assessed markers of central obesity seem to be most strongly related to ferritin.

Abstract
Acarbose (ACB) seems to be an effective drug in the management of cardiovascular risk factors. However, no previous meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) has been done to evaluate the effects of ACB on cardiovascular risk factors on impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). We comprehensively searched electronic databases including Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed for RCTs for related keywords up to September 2022. A random-effects model was used to estimate the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The pooled analysis demonstrated that ACB treatment had a significant effect on fasting blood glucose (FBG) (WMD = -3.55 mg/dL; 95%CI: -6.29, -0.81; p = 0.011), fasting insulin (WMD = -6.73 pmoL/L; 95%CI: -10.37, -3.10; p < 0.001), HbA1c [WMD = -0.32%; 95%CI: -0.45, -0.20; p < 0.001], body weight (WMD = -1.25 kg; 95%CI: -1.79, -0.75; p < 0.001), body mass index (BMI) (WMD = -0.64 kg/m2; 95%CI: -0.92, -0.37; p < 0.001), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) (WMD = -2.70 pg/mL, 95%CI: -5.25, -0.16; p = 0.037), leptin (WMD = -1.58 ng/mL; 95%CI: -2.82, -0.35; p = 0.012), alanine transaminase (ALT) (WMD = 0.71 U/L; 95%CI: -0.31, 1.85; p = 0.164), triglyceride (TG) (WMD = -13.89 mg/dL; 95%CI: -20.69, -7.09; p < 0.001), total cholesterol (TC) (WMD = -2.26 mg/dL; 95%CI: -4.18, -0.34; p = 0.021), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (WMD = -1.29 mmHg; 95%CI: -2.44, -0.15; p = 0.027), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (WMD = 0.02 mmHg; 95%CI: -0.41, 0.45; p = 0.925) in an intervention group, compared with a placebo group. The non-linear dose-response analysis showed that ACB reduces the TC in trial duration by >50 weeks, and 180 mg/day is more effective for the decrement of CRP. ACB can improve lipid profiles, glycemic indices, anthropometric indices, and inflammatory markers in T2D, T1D, and IGT patients.

Abstract
The relationship between poorer cardiovascular health metrics (CVHM) plus low-grade inflammation (LGI) and hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD) and hypertension-related comorbidities (HRC) in hypertensive populations with an overweight/obese (Ow/Ob) hypertension-related phenotype is understudied. We examined the relationship between the CVHM score and the presence of LGI and Ow/Ob hypertension-associated phenotype morbidities and mortality in 243 hypertensive patients from an urban primary care center. We recorded the baseline CVHM score plus clinical data, including hs-C-reactive protein (CRP) and prevalent and incident HMOD-HRC and death. A total of 26 (10.7%) had a body mass index (BMI) < 25 kg/m2, 95 (31.1%) were overweight (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m2), and 122 (50.2%) were obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2). There were 264 cases of HMOD-HRC and 9 deaths. Higher hs-CRP levels were observed as BMI increased. Linear regression analysis showed a significant correlation between BMI and hs-CRP, adjusted for confounders. Additionally, individuals with a higher hs-CRP tertile had a significant increase in BMI. Significantly lower log hs-CRP levels were found as the number of ideal CVHM scores rose. Multivariate binary logistic regression found the risk of HMOD-HRC increased significantly as the ideal CVHM scores decreased, and hs-CRP levels also correlated with HMOD-HRC in the whole cohort and in the Ow and Ob subpopulations. These findings highlight the need for early intervention targeting ideal CVHMs among hypertensive individuals with an Ow/Ob phenotype in order to attenuate the inflammatory state and prevent cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glycated albumin (GA) is a short-term measure of glycemic control. Several studies have demonstrated an inverse association between body mass index (BMI) and GA, which may affect its performance as a biomarker of hyperglycemia. We investigated cross-sectional associations between GA and multiple measures of adiposity, and compared its performance as a glycemic biomarker by obesity status, in a nationally representative sample of US adults. METHODS We measured GA in adults from the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Separately in adults with and without diabetes, we assessed associations of GA with adiposity measures (BMI, waist circumference, trunk fat, total body fat, and fat mass index) in sex-stratified multivariable regression models. We compared sensitivity and specificity of GA to identify elevated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), by obesity status. RESULTS In covariate-adjusted regression models, all adiposity measures were inversely associated with GA in adults without diabetes (β=-0.48 to -0.22%-point GA per 1 SD adiposity measure; n = 9750) and with diabetes (β=-1.73 to -0.92%-point GA per SD). Comparing adults with vs without obesity, GA exhibited lower sensitivity (43% vs 54%) with equivalent specificity (99%) to detect undiagnosed diabetes (HbA1c ≥ 6.5%). Among adults with diagnosed diabetes (n = 1085), GA performed well to identify above-target glycemia (HbA1c ≥ 7.0%), with high specificity (>80%) overall but lower sensitivity in those with vs without obesity (81% vs 93%). CONCLUSIONS Inverse associations between GA and adiposity were present in people with and without diabetes. GA is highly specific but may not be sufficiently sensitive for diabetes screening in adults with obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies support an association between obesity, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and periodontitis. Still, understanding of the effects of low-grade inflammation in obese subjects on periodontitis and influence of MetS remains incomplete. The aims of this cross-sectional study were to explore the association between obesity related variables and periodontitis, and assess if MetS is a risk indicator for periodontitis in a sample of obese adults. METHODS The study sample comprised 52 adults with a body mass index (BMI) of ≥ 30 kg/m2 referred for obesity therapy at the Obesity Centre at Haukeland University Hospital (HUH), Bergen, Norway. The subjects had prior to enrolment completed a 5-month lifestyle intervention course as part of a 2-year managing program. According to the revised National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) classification of MetS, 38 subjects were recruited to the MetS group and 14 subjects to the non-MetS group. Medical data including peripheral blood samples were obtained from records at HUH at the time of enrolment. Probing depth, clinical attachment level, tooth mobility, furcation involvement, bleeding on probing (BoP) were recorded and intraoral bitewings evaluated at a full-mouth periodontal examination. Associations between risk variables for obesity/MetS and periodontitis were explored using linear and logistic regression models. RESULTS In the present sample 79% of the subjects were diagnosed with periodontitis. The prevalence of stage III/IV periodontitis was 42.9% in the non-MetS group vs. 36.8% in the MetS group (p = 0.200). In the non-MetS group 29.8% of the sites displayed BoP vs. 23.5% in the MetS group (p = 0.048). For stage III/IV periodontitis, the effect of age appeared to be significant for obesity related variables and MetS (p = 0.006, p = 0.002, respectively). None of the other analyses showed significant association with the outcome variables. CONCLUSION In the present sample of obese subjects, periodontitis occurred independently of MetS. Reaching a certain BMI level, suggested association between MetS and periodontitis might be non-significant due to the dominating impact of obesity related variables undermining the effect of other systemic factors. TRIAL REGISTRATION The principal clinical trial, entitled "Obesity and Oral Diseases", was prospectively registered in ClinicalTrials.gov with registration NCT04602572 (20.10.2020).

Abstract
The objectives of the study were: (1) the evaluation of the blood serum concentration of ZAG (Zinc-alpha 2 Glycoprotein) in girls with anorexia nervosa, as well as in girls with simple obesity and healthy girls; and (2) the valuation of the relationship between the blood level of ZAG and the duration of AN and anthropometric parameters, parameters of the lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, thyroid hormones, and cortisol in the blood in all study subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study covered 87 girls (aged 11-17.9 years). The studied group (AN) contained 30 girls suffering from anorexia nervosa, and the control groups contained 30 healthy girls (H) and 27 girls with simple obesity (OB), respectively. RESULTS The mean concentration of ZAG in the blood serum in the AN group was significantly higher than in the OB and H groups. Accumulatively, the level of ZAG in the entire studied group correlated negatively with the parameters of their nutritional status. The mean concentrations of ZAG in the entire group correlated positively with the concentrations of HDL and cortisol and negatively with insulin, HOMA-IR, triglycerides, and hsCRP. CONCLUSIONS The higher blood concentrations of ZAG in girls with AN compared to healthy subjects seemed to constitute a secondary adaptation mechanism in response to the undernourishment status. ZAG blood concentration values correlated negatively with body mass, BMI, Cole's index, the level of insulin, and the HOMA-IR score, whereas they correlated positively with the level of cortisol. Increased ZAG levels in AN patients may result from increased levels of cortisol, manifesting in malfunction along the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which in effect can promote body weight loss.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with the presence of low-grade inflammation even during childhood. The dysregulation in the secretion of adipokines, such as leptin, which occurs in obesity states, could be associated with an increase in inflammatory factors already at an early age. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to investigate the role of leptin levels in the association between body mass index (BMI) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in healthy schoolchildren. Leptin and hs-CRP levels were analyzed in two pediatric cohorts comprising 684 prepubertal children and 763 adolescents. hs-CRP concentrations correlated significantly with BMI and leptin levels in prepubertal males and females as well as in adolescents. However, after adjusting for leptin concentration, no significant correlation was observed between hs-CRP and BMI in prepubertal children, while the correlations remained significant in adolescents. The same differences were observed when analyzed BMI according to hs-CRP tertile after adjusting for leptin; mean BMI was not significantly different between hs-CRP tertile in prepubertal children but was significantly different in adolescents. In conclusion, the fact that leptin concentrations determine the association of BMI with hs-CRP levels in prepubertal children, but not in adolescents, suggests a role for leptin in low-grade inflammation at early ages, while other factors seem to contribute to hs-CRP levels later in life.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a highly prevalent and heterogenous endocrinopathy affecting 5-18% of women. Although its cardinal features include androgen excess, ovulatory dysfunction, and/or polycystic ovarian morphology, women often display related metabolic manifestations, including hyperinsulinaemia, insulin resistance, and obesity. Emerging data reveal that the hormonal alterations associated with PCOS also impact bone metabolism. However, inconsistent evidence exists as to whether PCOS is a bone-protective or bone-hindering disorder with an accumulating body of clinical data indicating that hyperandrogenism, hyperinsulinaemia, insulin resistance, and obesity may have a relative protective influence on bone, whereas chronic low-grade inflammation and vitamin D deficiency may adversely affect bone health. Herein, we provide a comprehensive assessment of the endocrine and metabolic manifestations associated with PCOS and their relative effects on bone metabolism. We focus principally on clinical studies in women investigating their contribution to the alterations in bone turnover markers, bone mineral density, and ultimately fracture risk in PCOS. A thorough understanding in this regard will indicate whether women with PCOS require enhanced surveillance of bone health in routine clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that asthma and obesity may share a common pathway, possibly through an increase in inflammation. Sedentary time is thought to promote both inflammation and obesity and previous studies have found a relationship between self-reported sedentary and asthma. However, the relationship between objectively measured sedentary time and asthma is not well described. We hypothesized that the association between asthma and sedentary time would not be present when physical activity was measured objectively, nor would objectively-measured sedentary time play an important role in the relationship between asthma and obesity. OBJECTIVE To determine if there is an association between asthma and objectively measured sedentary time in a large, nationally representative sample of the United States youth. METHODS Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2006, we assessed the relationship between asthma and sedentary time using objectively measured and self-reported measures of sedentary time, in 6-19 years-old subjects with available accelerometry data. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis to determine associations between the risk of asthma and sedentary time controlling for accelerometer wear time, gender, age, race/ethnicity, body mass index percentile, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). RESULTS In this cohort, youth with asthma self-reported more time in sedentary behavior, specifically computer time, than those without asthma (p = 0.01). However, when sedentary time was measured objectively by accelerometry, sedentary time did not differ between youth with and without asthma (421 min [standard deviation 4.2] versus. 414 min [standard deviation 7.8] [p = 0.38]). Controlling for measures of activity, such as MVPA, or time spent in long versus short bouts of sedentary time did not modify our results. CONCLUSIONS Differences in sedentary time by self-report between those with and without asthma were not born out by examining sedentary time using objective measures. Further work is necessary to examine the complex interaction among inactivity, obesity, and asthma over time, specifically focusing on whether the type of sedentary activity (e.g., computer vs. television time) is important.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To evaluate body composition, especially visceral adipose tissue (VAT), by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and its relation to endothelial function investigated by venous occlusion plethysmography (VOP) and ultrasensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP). METHODOLOGY This is a cross sectional study in adults of both sexes divided into group 1 (BMI, 20-24.9, n=30), group 2 (BMI, 25-29.9, n=22), group 3 (BMI, 30-34.9, n=27) and group 4 (BMI, 35-39.9, n=22). VAT was analyzed, among other parameters of adiposity, by DXA Lunar iDXA, and co-related to endothelial function, anthropometric evaluation, cardiometabolic variables and hsCRP. For statistical analysis, tests of comparison between groups and correlation were performed using the software SPSS version 25. RESULTS Inverse correlation of TFT (total fat mass), % RFM (regional fat mass), FMI (fat mass index) and VAT were identified with increment of arterial blood flow in VOP, except the decrease of the latter, with increase of BMI, adiposity indexes, especially VAT, between groups. hsCRP values showed a direct correlation with progression of adiposity and VAT, between groups. CONCLUSIONS VAT progression, by DXA analysis, was associated with a decline in endothelial function and increase of inflammation, demonstrating potential use in early identification of individuals with cardiovascular risk (CVR).

Abstract
The proportion of obese or overweight patients in COPD patients is increasing. Although BMI, WC and other easy to measure indicators have been proven to be related to the risk of COPD, they cannot accurately reflect the distribution and changes of body composition, ignoring the body composition (such as fat distribution, muscle content, water content, etc.), the relationship between it and disease risk may be missed. By analyzing the correlation between different body composition indexes and COPD patients, we can provide new research ideas for the prognosis judgment or intervention of COPD disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Many dietary polyphenols with potential health-promoting benefits undergo hepatic conjugation and circulate as inactive glucuronides that can be cleaved by ß-glucuronidase to reform the bioactive aglycone. Although indirect evidence suggests estrogen may induce ß-glucuronidase, little is known about ß-glucuronidase regulation across women's reproductive lifespan. Correlates of serum ß-glucuronidase activity in healthy premenopausal versus postmenopausal women were therefore examined. METHODS ß-Glucuronidase activity and C-reactive protein (CRP) were assayed in stored serum from the Women's Breast and Bone Density Study, and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and anthropometry assessed body composition. Participants were premenopausal (n = 133) or postmenopausal (n = 89), and Hispanic (37%) or non-Hispanic White (63%). Multivariate linear regression models tested associations between ß-glucuronidase and menopausal status, ethnicity, CRP, and body composition metrics, overall and stratified by menopausal status. RESULTS Postmenopausal (vs premenopausal) women were older (60.4 ± 3.7 vs 44.8 ± 2.4 y) with a lower Hispanic ethnicity prevalence (27% vs 44%), and higher serum ß-glucuronidase activity (1.5 ± 0.8 vs 1.3 ± 0.5 U/L) and CRP (4.2 ± 4.4 vs 3.3 ± 4.7 mg/L). Adjusting for confounders, ß-glucuronidase was positively associated with Hispanic ethnicity, CRP, body mass index, and total fat mass (all, P < 0.01), but not menopausal status nor lean mass. Central adiposity measures were also positively associated with ß-glucuronidase with the same covariates. CONCLUSIONS ß-Glucuronidase enzyme activity, upon which polyphenol health-related benefits may depend, is not associated with menopausal status. Future studies are required to determine clinical significance and mechanisms driving ß-glucuronidase associations with ethnicity, inflammation, and adiposity in women.

Abstract
Obesity is a chronic multifactorial disease that has become a serious health problem and is currently widespread over the world. It is, in fact, strongly associated with many other conditions, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, the onset of different types of malignant tumors and alterations in reproductive function. According to the literature, obesity is characterized by a state of low-grade chronic inflammation, with a substantial increase in immune cells, specifically macrophage infiltrates in the adipose tissue which, in turn, secrete a succession of pro-inflammatory mediators. Furthermore, recent studies on microbiota have postulated new possible mechanisms of interaction between obesity and unbalanced nutrition with inflammation. This intestinal "superorganism" complex seems to influence not only the metabolic balance of the host but also the immune response, favoring a state of systemic inflammation and insulin resistance. This review summarizes the major evidence on the interactions between the gut microbiota, energetic metabolism and host immune system, all leading to a convergence of the fields of immunology, nutrients physiology and microbiota in the context of obesity and its possible clinical complications. Finally, possible therapeutic approaches aiming to rebalance the intestinal microbial ecosystem are evaluated to improve the alteration of inflammatory and metabolic states in obesity and related diseases.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is increasing globally and is associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, autoimmune disease, and cardiovascular disease. Vit D deficiency is also associated with increased systemic inflammation. The current study aimed to determine the efficacy of low-fat milk and yogurt fortified with 1500 IU nano-encapsulated vitamin D, on systemic inflammation in abdominal obese participants. Method This multi-center study was conducted using a 2.5-month parallel total-blind randomized clinical trial design. Two hundred and eighty nine subjects were allocated to four groups: low-fat milk fortified by 1500 IU nano-encapsulated vitamin D3 (200 mL/day). Simple milk (200 mL/day), low-fat yogurt fortified by 1500 IU nano-encapsulated vitamin D3 (150 g/day), and simple yogurt (150 g/day). Results The results showed that serum levels of neutrophils, lymphocytes, platelets and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) were significantly lower before and after the intervention in fortified dairy groups. The results showed that serum levels of neutrophils, lymphocytes, platelets, and RDW before and after intervention in the fortified dairy groups were significantly lower (p < 0.05). The values of = neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelets to lymphocyte ratio, and RDW to platelets ratio (RPR) reduced significantly in the fortification group (p < 0.05). Conclusion Fortification with nano-encapsulated vitamin D3 of dairy products may decrease inflammation in individuals with abdominal obesity.

Abstract
The diagnosis of obesity comprises subjects with totally different phenotypes and metabolic profiles. Systemic inflammation and oxidative stress derived from the white adipose tissue are suggested as the link between this disease and the development of insulin resistance and metabolic comorbidities. The presence of unicellular eukaryotic parasites colonizing the human gut ecosystem is a common circumstance, and yet their influence on the inflammatory and redox status of the obese host has not been assessed. Herein, a set of inflammatory and redox biomarkers were assessed together with a parasitological analysis of 97 severely obese subjects. Information was also collected on insulin resistance and on the antioxidant composition of the diet. The global prevalence of intestinal unicellular parasites was 49.5%, with Blastocystis sp. the most prevalent protozoan found (42.3%). Colonized subjects displayed a higher total antioxidant capacity and a trend towards higher extracellular superoxide dismutase activity, regardless of their insulin resistance status, along with lower reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratios in plasma in the insulin-resistant subgroup. No changes in malondialdehyde levels, or in inflammatory cytokines in plasma, were found in regard to the colonization status. In conclusion, enteric eukaryotic unicellular parasites may play an important role in modulating the antioxidant defenses of an obese host, thus could have beneficial effects with respect to the development of systemic metabolic disorders.

Abstract
To compare the neurocognitive scores between persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) and persons without human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and assess the relationship between neurocognition, HIV status and variables, inflammation, and body composition measures. Cross-sectional study involving 225 participants (126 PLWH on antiretroviral therapy [ART] and 99 persons without HIV). For the first time in HIV, we used Cognivue®, an food and drug administration (FDA)-approved computer-based test to assess cognitive function. The test was calibrated to individuals' unique cognitive ability and measured 6 cognitive domains and 2 performance parameters. Markers of inflammation, immune activation, insulin resistance, and body fat composition (using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan) were collected. Classical t tests, chi-square tests, and spearman correlations were used to compare and explore relationships between variables. Inverse probability weighting adjusted average treatment effect models were performed to evaluate the differences between PLWH and persons without HIV, adjusting for age, race, sex, and heroin use. Overall, 64% were male, 46% were Black, with a mean age of 43 years. Among PLWH, 83% had an undetectable HIV-1 RNA level (≤20 copies/mL). Compared persons without HIV, PLWH performed poorer across 4 domains: visuospatial (P = .035), executive function (P = .029), naming/language (P = .027), and abstraction (P = .018). In addition, PLWH had a significantly longer processing speed time compared to controls (1686.0 ms vs 1606.0 ms [P = .007]). In PLWH, lower cognitive testing domain scores were associated with higher inflammatory markers (high sensitivity C-reactive protein [hsCRP]) and with higher total fat and visceral adipose tissue (P < .05). Neurocognitive impairment (NCI) in HIV is associated with inflammation and total and central adiposity.

Abstract
Simple Summary Head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment poses several challenges in clinical practice, and treatment side effects can be debilitating due to the close proximity of important anatomical structures. Cancer recurrence post-treatment presents some of the most challenging HNC management issues. This prospective study identifies high-risk groups for recurrence of head and neck cancer, based on commonly accessible clinical parameters. In this study with 272 HNC patients, elevated pre- and post-treatment CRP levels, low BMI and advanced stage at admission indicate higher risk for recurrence of disease. Using these parameters, a risk model is proposed which may be useful for estimating the probability of cancer recurrence and allow the identification of high and low-risk patients. Abstract This prospective study identifies high-risk groups for recurrence of head and neck cancer by BMI and circulating inflammatory response markers. Head and neck cancer patients from three Swedish hospitals were included (n = 272). Leukocyte and thrombocyte counts, CRP levels, and BMI were measured pre-treatment and post-treatment. Associations between the four factors and treatment failure (residual tumor, loco-regional failure, general failure/distant metastasis) were assessed using a Cox proportional hazards model adjusted for sex, age at the initial visit, smoking status, cancer stage, and hemoglobin count. CRP level was the only significant single variable, with an average increase in risk of recurrence of 74% (p = 0.018) for every doubling. The predictive power of a combined model using all variables was highest during the initial months after treatment, with AUC under the ROC curve 0.75 at the 0–3 month timepoints. Patients with elevated pre- and post-treatment CRP levels are at higher risk for recurrence of disease. Male patients with low post-treatment BMI, advanced stage, and high CRP at any time post treatment are at high risk for recurrence. The combined model may be useful for stratifying post-treatment patients into low and high-risk groups, to enable more detailed follow-up or additional treatment regimens.

Abstract
Non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and cancer are very common causes of death worldwide. Therefore, the need to search for novel, affordable, and easily accessible biomarkers and risk factors for non-communicable diseases continues, which can predict the future risk of having these diseases with greater accuracy and precision. In this context, among available biomarkers, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) is considered to be the best-suited marker. Various drug intervention trials demonstrated positive results in reducing Hs-CRP in individuals with raised levels. Numerous pharmacological and non-pharmacologic interventions in the form of lifestyle modifications, exercise, and cessation of smoking are being investigated to study their effect on reducing serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. This review article discusses the role of Hs-CRP and its isoforms in the pathogenesis of various disease conditions, factors affecting its serum concentration, its prognostic value, and its comparison with other risk factors. Further, its clinical significance in chronic inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the nervous system and other common non-communicable diseases, including recent advances in the management of various diseases, has also been discussed.

Abstract
Background In the presence of inflammation, the serum or plasma ferritin concentration ("ferritin" hereafter) transiently increases, confounding its interpretation as an iron status marker. The extent to which adiposity-related inflammation may influence ferritin interpretation is uncertain. Objectives We describe relationships between weight status, inflammation, and ferritin among nonpregnant women of reproductive age (WRA; 15-49 years) and preschool-age children (PSC; 6-59 months) with normal weight to overweight or obesity (OWOB) in differing geographic settings. Methods Cross-sectional data were separately analyzed from 18 surveys (WRA) and 25 surveys (PSC) from the Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia (BRINDA) project, excluding observations with underweight, wasting, pregnancy, or malaria. Relationships were assessed between BMI (in WRA) or BMI-for-age z-score (BAZ; in PSC), inflammatory biomarkers of C-reactive protein (CRP) and/or α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), ferritin by linear regression, and potential mediation by CRP and/or AGP in relationships between BMI or BAZ and ferritin with structural equation modeling. Regression and mediation models accounted for complex survey designs. Results were grouped by World Bank income classifications. Results In 5 of 6 surveys among WRA from upper-middle and high-income countries, ferritin was significantly positively associated with BMI, and this relationship was partially (or fully, in the United States) mediated by CRP and/or AGP. Mediation was present in 4 of 12 surveys for WRA in low- and lower-middle income countries. Among PSC, ferritin was positively associated with CRP and/or AGP in all surveys, but there were no significant CRP- or AGP-mediated relationships between ferritin and BAZ, except a negative relationship in the Philippines. Conclusions Where having OWOB is common among WRA, measurements of inflammatory biomarkers and their uses in interpreting ferritin may improve iron status assessments. While these relationships were inconsistent among PSC, inflammation was common and should be measured to interpret iron status. Abstract
BACKGROUND Concurrent variation in adiposity and inflammation suggests potential shared functional pathways and pleiotropic disease underpinning. Yet, exploration of pleiotropy in the context of adiposity-inflammation has been scarce, and none has included self-identified Hispanic/Latino populations. Given the high level of ancestral diversity in Hispanic American population, genetic studies may reveal variants that are infrequent/monomorphic in more homogeneous populations. METHODS Using multi-trait Adaptive Sum of Powered Score (aSPU) method, we examined individual and shared genetic effects underlying inflammatory (CRP) and adiposity-related traits (Body Mass Index [BMI]), and central adiposity (Waist to Hip Ratio [WHR]) in HLA participating in the Population Architecture Using Genomics and Epidemiology (PAGE) cohort (N = 35,871) with replication of effects in the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort (CCHC) which consists of Mexican American individuals. RESULTS Of the > 16 million SNPs tested, variants representing 7 independent loci were found to illustrate significant association with multiple traits. Two out of 7 variants were replicated at statistically significant level in multi-trait analyses in CCHC. The lead variant on APOE (rs439401) and rs11208712 were found to harbor multi-trait associations with adiposity and inflammation. CONCLUSIONS Results from this study demonstrate the importance of considering pleiotropy for improving our understanding of the etiology of the various metabolic pathways that regulate cardiovascular disease development.

function of adipose tissue, leading to altered secretion of adipocytokines, inflammatory
mediators release, and chronic low-grade inflammation, are seen in obesity.
Macrophages, neutrophils, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, B cells, natural killer T (NKT)
cells, eosinophils, mast cells, and adipocytes are involved in the inflammatory response
that occurs during obesity. Various inflammatory markers are released from these cells.
In this chapter, we will mention inflammatory mechanisms and markers of obesity.

Abstract
Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. Based on recent studies, one of the factors that can have detrimental effects on CVD is the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). The current study investigated the relationship between UPF intake and cardiometabolic risk factors among Iranian women. Methods The current cross-sectional study was conducted on 391 women aged 18-65 years with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2. Dietary intake was assessed using a 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Anthropometric and biochemistry parameters were also collected. UPFs were identified using the NOVA classification. Results In the present study, women had a mean (standard deviation) age of 36.67 (9.10) years and the mean BMI of 31.26 (4.29) kg/m2. According to our findings, there was a significant association between UPF consumption and transforming growth factor (TGF) (β: 0.101, 95% CI: 0.023, 0.180, p = 0.012), atherogenic coefficient (AC) (β: 0.011, 95% CI: 0.001, 0.032, p = 0.034), visceral fat level (VFL) (β: 0.006, 95% CI: -0.017, 0.029, p = 0.076), and the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) (β: -3.775, 95%CI: 0.001, 0.001, p = 0.042). Conclusion In conclusion, an increase in consumption of one gram of UPFs is associated with an increase in TGF, AC, and VFL but with a decrease in QUICKI. Despite this, further experimental studies are necessary to draw a more definite conclusion and disentangle the mechanisms by which UPFs may affect health.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common condition that affects the general population over a wide range of ages, regardless of gender and social background. Early-onset of MDD in adulthood, between ages of 18 and 30 years, is associated with worse outcomes and increased years of disability. Stress load and physical health have been associated with age of onset in MDD. We aim to investigate whether early onset MDD might be associated with changes in systemic inflammatory markers. We examined levels of following cytokines: IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and TNFα in 234 patients with MDD. Higher serum levels of TNFα and IL-1β are associated with the early onset of the disorder in patients with MDD. IL-6 levels were also higher in the early onset group and IL-10 levels were higher in the late onset group, but with no significant difference. Changes in the anti-inflammatory/pro-inflammatory balance have been described in mood disorders and may be implicated in its severity and pattern of progression. Our findings reinforce that higher serum levels of IL-1β and TNFα may be associated with the earlier onset subgroup of MDD patients. Future research that target inflammatory markers of immune modulation may be, key in the search for novel preventative therapeutics.

Abstract
Chronic systemic inflammation is a risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD). Whether this relationship extends to subclinical inflammation, quantified by values of circulating markers associated with inflammation in the high range of the normal interval, remains debatable. This narrative review evaluates evidence exploring this relationship. A review of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, including diet and lifestyle strategies, supplements, nutraceuticals, and other natural substances aimed at reducing inflammation was also conducted, since few reviews have synthesized this literature. PubMed and EMBASE were used to search the literature and several well-studied triggers of inflammation [oxidized LDL, Lp(a), as well as C-reactive protein (CRP)/high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP)] were included to increase sensitivity and address the lack of existing reviews summarizing their influence in the context of inflammation. All resulting references were assessed. Overall, there is good data supporting associations between circulating hs-CRP and CV outcomes. However, the same was not seen in studies evaluating triggers of inflammation, such as oxidized LDL or Lp(a). There is also insufficient evidence showing treatments to target inflammation and lead to reductions in hs-CRP result in improvements in CV outcomes, particularly in those with normal baseline levels of hs-CRP. Regarding pharmacological interventions, statins, bempedoic acid, and apabetalone significantly reduce circulating hs-CRP, unlike PCSK-9 inhibitors. A variety of natural substances and vitamins were also evaluated and none reduced hs-CRP. Regarding non-pharmacological interventions, weight loss was strongly associated with reductions in circulating hs-CRP, whereas various dietary interventions and exercise regimens were not, unless accompanied by weight loss.

Abstract
PURPOSE Study reported that C-reactive protein (CRP) would peak at 48 h after the initiation of an acute inflammatory response. We proposed that the ratio of CRP level on postoperative day 3 to day 2 (POD3/2 CRP) can be used to early predict major postoperative complications (PCs) for patients who underwent laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. METHODS Patients were randomized into training cohort and validation cohort at a ratio of 7:3. PCs greater than grade II or more, according to Clavien-Dindo classification, were defined as major PCs. Three predictive models for major PCs based on CRP level were constructed, including POD3/2 CRP, the CRP level on POD3 (POD3 CRP), and the ratio of CRP level on POD3 to POD1 (POD3/1 CRP). The performances of three prediction models were assessed by AUC. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors of major PCs. RESULTS 344 patients were included. Major PCs were observed in 57 patients (16.6%). In the training cohort, POD3/2 CRP provided the best diagnostic accuracy with an AUC of 0.929 at an optimal cut-off value of 1.08, and the sensitivity and specificity were 0.902 and 0.880, respectively. In the validation cohort, the corresponding AUC was 0.917. BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 and POD3/2 CRP > 1 were identified as risk factors for major PCs. CONCLUSION POD3/2 CRP is a reliable marker to predict major PCs after laparoscopic radical gastrectomy. If CRP is higher on POD3 than on POD2, major PCs are highly likely.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine the relationship between oxidative stress, DNA damage, inflammation, and metabolic biomarkers as the mediating factor between Islamic Sunnah intermittent fasting (IF) practice and cognitive function among older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). DESIGN This study was a 36 months prospective cohort study. SETTING Community-dwelling older participants recruited through a stratified random sampling method from four states representing Malaysia's central, north-west, northeast and southern regions. PARTICIPANTS Ninety-nine Malay Muslim older adults (n= 99) aged 60 and above with MCI and no known critical illnesses were included in the current analysis. The participants were divided into regularly practicing IF (r-IF), irregularly practicing IF (i-IF) and not practicing IF (n-IF) groups. MEASUREMENTS Fasting venous blood was collected and used to determine the levels of oxidative stress, DNA damage, inflammatory and metabolic biomarkers. Mini-Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Digit Span and Digit symbol were used to evaluate the cognitive function. Then, the mediation analysis was conducted using a multistep regression model to determine the mediating role of various biomarkers between IF practice and cognitive function. RESULTS When comparing the r-IF and n-IF groups, higher SOD activity, lower DNA damage (percentage of DNA in tail), lower CRP levels and higher HDL-cholesterol levels established partial mediation while lower insulin levels established complete mediation between IF practice and better cognitive function. Meanwhile, when comparing the r-IF and i-IF groups, higher SOD activity and lower CRP levels completely mediated the effects of IF practice on better cognitive function. CONCLUSION It can be concluded that changes in antioxidant function, DNA damage, inflammation and a limited set of metabolic biomarkers (insulin and HDL cholesterol) may mediate improvements in cognitive function among older participants with MCI who practice Islamic Sunnah IF.

Abstract
Background Obesity is associated with low-grade systemic inflammation, and it has been suggested that increased inflammation markers could predict future weight gain. Our aim was to investigate the associations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) concentration with changes in weight and waist circumference in adults during 11 years of follow-up. Methods We used data from the Health 2000 and Health 2011 surveys consisting of a population-based sample of Finnish adults. We included those 3143 participants, aged 30–75 years at baseline, whose baseline hs-CRP was measured, and who had information on measured weight and height at both time points. Associations between baseline hs-CRP and changes in weight and waist circumference were analyzed using multinomial logistic regression, adjusted for sociodemographic factors (age, sex, marital status, and educational status), lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, leisure-time physical activity, sitting time, sleeping time, and psychological distress), and baseline values of BMI and waist circumference. Results Hs-CRP was not associated with weight gain (≥5%) when adjusted for potential confounders (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.96–1.01), compared to stable weight (change <±5%). Higher baseline hs-CRP was associated with decrease in weight (≤−5%) in the unadjusted (OR 1.03, 1.01–1.05), but not in the adjusted (OR 1.01, 0.99–1.03) model. No association was observed between hs-CRP and waist circumference. Conclusions Hs-CRP was not associated with future changes in weight or waist circumference in adults. These findings suggest that hs-CRP concentration does not predict future weight gain.

Abstract
Background and objectives Humans co-evolved with pathogens, especially helminths, that educate the immune system during development and lower inflammatory responses. The absence of such stimuli in industrialized countries is associated with higher baseline levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) among adults who appear at greater risk for inflammatory disorders. This cross-sectional study examined effects of early life development on salivary CRP levels in 452 British-Bangladeshis who spent varying periods growing up in Bangladesh or UK. We also analyzed how gender and central obesity modulate effects on CRP. We hypothesized that: (i) first-generation Bangladeshis with higher childhood exposure to pathogens would have chronically lower CRP levels than second-generation British-Bangladeshis; (ii) effects would be greater with early childhoods in Bangladesh; (iii) effects by gender would differ; and (iv) increasing obesity would mitigate early life effects. Methodology Saliva samples were assayed for CRP using ELISAs, and anthropometric data collected. Participants completed questionnaires about demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle and health histories. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. Results First-generation migrants who spent early childhoods in mostly rural, unhygienic areas, and moved to UK after age 8, had lower salivary CRP compared to the second-generation. Effects differed by gender, while waist circumference predicted higher CRP levels. CRP increased with years in UK, alongside growing obesity. Conclusions and implications Our study supports the hypothesis that pathogen exposure in early life lowers inflammatory responses in adults. However, protective effects differed by gender and can be eroded by growing obesity across the life course which elevates risks for other inflammatory disorders. Lay Summary: Migrants to the UK who spent early childhoods in less hygienic environments in Bangladesh that help to educate their immune systems had lower levels of the inflammatory marker, C-reactive protein (CRP) compared to migrants who grew up in UK. Both gender and increasing obesity were associated with increased levels of CRP.

Abstract
Objectives In recent years; increasing evidence pointed out the clinical importance of adipose tissue (AT) distribution in various patient populations. In particular, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), when compared to subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), was found to play a pivotal role in the development of inflammatory reaction. The aim of the present study was to examine whether body fat distribution has an impact on the development of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) in patients with polytrauma. Methods In our retrospective study; we filtered our institution records of the German Trauma Registry (Trauma Register DGU) from November 2018 to April 2021 and included 132 adult polytrauma patients with injury severity score (ISS) >16. Subsequently; we measured the visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue area based on whole-body CT scan and calculated the ratio of VAT to SAT (VSr). Thereafter, the patient population was evenly divided into three groups; respectively VSr value less than 0.4 for the first group (low ratio), 0.4–0.84 for the second group (intermediate ratio), and greater than 0.84 for the third group (high ratio). Considering the other influencing factors; the groups were further divided into subgroups in the respective analysis according to gender (male/female), BMI (<25 or ≥25), and ISS (<26 or ≥26). Result VSr was an independent factor from body mass index (BMI) (r2 = 0.003; p = 0.553). VSr in male patients was significantly higher (p < 0.001). Patients with low VSr had higher ISS scores (p = 0.028). Polytrauma patients with higher VSr tended to have lower SIRS scores and significant differences of SIRS score were found on multiple days during the whole hospitalization period. In the low VAT/SAT group, male patients, and patients with BMI greater than 25, both exhibited higher SIRS scores during hospital stay (day 16: p = 0.01; day 22: p = 0.048 and p = 0.011; respectively). During hospitalization, patients with higher ISS score (≥26) in the low VSr group was found to have higher SIRS score (day 16; p = 0.007). Over the hospital stay; serum markers of CRP; CK; and leukocyte in patients with low VSr were higher than those in patients in the intermediate and high VSr groups; with significant difference discovered on multiple days (day 16: 0.014; day 22: p = 0.048). Conclusion Lower VSr is associated with increased inflammatory response and worse clinical outcome in patients with polytrauma. Furthermore; VSr is an independent factor providing additional information to BMI.

Abstract
The global pandemic of obesity and the increasing incidence of chronic respiratory diseases are growing health concerns. The association between obesity and pulmonary function is uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to explore associations between changes in lung function and obesity-related indices in a large longitudinal study. A total of 9059 participants with no personal histories of asthma, smoking, bronchitis, or emphysema were enrolled from the Taiwan Biobank and followed for 4 years. Lung function was assessed using spirometry measurements including forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). Changes in FEV1/FVC (∆FEV1/FVC) between baseline and follow-up were calculated. The following obesity-related indices were studied: lipid accumulation product (LAP), body roundness index (BRI), conicity index (CI), body adiposity index (BAI), abdominal volume index (AVI), body mass index (BMI), waist–hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). In multivariable analysis, the subjects with high BMI (p < 0.001), WHR (p < 0.001), WHtR (p < 0.001), LAP (p = 0.002), BRI (p < 0.001), CI (p = 0.005), BAI (p < 0.001), and AVI (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a high baseline FEV1/FVC. After 4 years of follow-up, the subjects with high BMI (p < 0.001), WHR (p < 0.001), WHtR (p < 0.001), LAP (p = 0.001), BRI (p < 0.001), CI (p = 0.002), BAI (p < 0.001), and AVI (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a low △FEV1/FVC. High obesity-related index values were associated with better baseline lung function and a rapid decrease in lung function at follow-up.
