Recognition of typical antibiotic residues in environmental media related to groundwater in China (2009-2019)

Sensitive visual detection of norfloxacin in water by smartphone assisted colorimetric method based on peroxidase-like active cobalt-doped Fe3O4 nanozyme

Norfloxacin is widely used owing to its strong bactericidal effect on Gram-negative bacteria. However, the residual norfloxacin in the environment can be biomagnified via food chain and may damage the human liver and delay the bone development of minors. Present work described a reliable and sensitive smartphone colorimetric sensing system based on cobalt-doped Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (Co-Fe3O4 MNPs) for the visual detection of norfloxacin. Compared with Fe3O4, Co-Fe3O4 MNPs earned more remarkably peroxidase-like activity and TMB (colorless) was rapidly oxidized to oxTMB (blue) with the presence of H2O2. Interestingly, the addition of low concentration of norfloxacin can accelerate the color reaction process of TMB, and blue deepening of the solution can be observed with the naked eye. However, after adding high concentration of norfloxacin, the activity of nanozyme was inhibited, resulting in the gradual fading of the solution. Based on this principle, a colorimetric sensor integrated with smartphone RGB mode was established. The visual sensor exhibited good linearity for norfloxacin monitoring in the range of 0.13-2.51 µmol/L and 17.5-100 µmol/L. The limit of visual detection was 0.08 µmol/L. In the actual water sample analysis, the spiked recoveries of norfloxacin were over the range of 95.7%-104.7 %. These results demonstrated that the visual sensor was a convenient and fast method for the efficient and accurate detection of norfloxacin in water, which may have broad application prospect.

Impact of Bacillus licheniformis from yaks following antibiotic therapy in mouse model

Gut microorganism (GM) is an integral component of the host microbiome and health system. Abuse of antibiotics disrupts the equilibrium of the microbiome, affecting environmental pathogens and host-associated bacteria alike. However, relatively little research on Bacillus licheniformis alleviates the adverse effects of antibiotics. To test the effect of B. licheniformis as a probiotic supplement against the effects of antibiotics, cefalexin was applied, and the recovery from cefalexin-induced jejunal community disorder and intestinal barrier damage was investigated by pathology, real-time PCR (RT-PCR), and high-throughput sequencing (HTS). The result showed that A group (antibiotic treatment) significantly reduced body weight and decreased the length of jejunal intestinal villi and the villi to crypt (V/C) value, which also caused structural damage to the jejunal mucosa. Meanwhile, antibiotic treatment suppressed the mRNA expression of tight junction proteins ZO-1, claudin, occludin, and Ki67 and elevated MUC2 expression more than the other Groups (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01). However, T group (B. licheniformis supplements after antibiotic treatment) restored the expression of the above genes, and there was no statistically significant difference compared to the control group (P > 0.05). Moreover, the antibiotic treatment increased the relative abundance of 4 bacterial phyla affiliated with 16 bacterial genera in the jejunum community, including the dominant Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Cyanobacteria in the jejunum. B. licheniformis supplements after antibiotic treatment reduced the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria and increased the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Epsilonbacteraeota, Lactobacillus, and Candidatus Stoquefichus. This study uses mimic real-world exposure scenarios by considering the concentration and duration of exposure relevant to environmental antibiotic contamination levels. We described the post-antibiotic treatment with B. licheniformis could restore intestinal microbiome disorders and repair the intestinal barrier. Biofilm enhanced the mitigations of antibiotics and resistome in sulfadiazine and trimethoprim co-contaminated soils

Reducing antibiotic levels in soil ecosystems is vital to curb the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and mitigate global health threats. However, gaps persist in understanding how antibiotic resistome can be suppressed during antibiotic degradation. Herein, we investigate the efficacy of a biochar biofilm incorporating antibiotics-degrading bacterial strain (Arthrobacter sp. D2) to mitigate antibiotic resistome in non-manured and manure-amended soils with sulfadiazine (SDZ) and trimethoprim (TMP) contamination. Results show that biofilm enhanced SDZ degradation by 83.0% within three days and increased TMP attenuation by 55.4% over 60 days in non-manured soils. In the non-manured black soil, the relative abundance of ARGs increased initially after biofilm inoculation. However, by day 30, it decreased by 20.5% compared to the controls. Moreover, after 7 days, biofilm reduced TMP by 38.5% in manured soils and decreased the total ARG abundance by 19.0%. Thus, while SDZ degradation did not increase sulfonamide resistance genes, TMP dissipation led to a proliferation of insertion sequences and related TMP resistance genes. This study underscores the importance of antibiotic degradation in reducing related ARGs while cautioning against the potential proliferation and various ARGs transfer by resistant microorganisms.

Preparation and characterization of biochar from four different solid wastes and its ampicillin adsorption performance

The integration of biochar (BC) production from organic waste with ampicillin (AMP), an emerging pollutant, adsorption is a novel and promising treatment approach. In this study, peanut shells, coffee grounds, digestates, and oyster shells were used for BC production. Among these, the use of anaerobic digestate from food waste fermentation to produce extracts for antibiotic adsorption is relatively unexplored. The pyrolysis temperature was determined using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the materials were characterized with BET, SEM, FTIR, and XRD. The TGA results indicate that PSB, CRB, and DSB underwent pyrolysis involving cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, whereas OSB underwent crystal formation. Characterization revealed that DSB has more functional groups, a superior mesoporous structure, appropriate O/C ratio, and trace amounts of calcite crystals, which are favorable for AMP adsorption. Adsorption experiments demonstrate that all four materials adhere to the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm and Elovich kinetic models, indicating predominant physical adsorption, with some chemical adsorption also present. Thermodynamic studies demonstrate that BC is spontaneous during adsorption and is a heat-absorbing reaction. DSB exhibits the strongest AMP adsorption. A 53.81 mg g-1 adsorbance was obtained at a dosage of 150 mg, pH = 2, and 60 °C. This study introduces innovative approaches for managing waste types and provides data to support the selection of suitable solid wastes for the preparation of BC with excellent adsorption properties. Furthermore, it lays the groundwork for future studies aimed at enhancing the AMP treatment efficacy.

Metabolomics combined with proteomics reveals phytotoxic effects of norfloxacin under drought stress on Oryza sativa

In recent decades, plants enduring abiotic stresses such as drought and chemical stresses. Currently, the mechanism of combined antibiotic and drought stress response and its impact on crop growth and food security remains poorly understood. Here, the mechanism of stress responses under the exposure of norfloxacin (NF) and drought (D) individually and in combination (DNF) were explored on rice (Oryza sativa) cultivar Hanyou73 through proteomics and metabolomic analysis. All treatments adversely affected chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics, antioxidant enzyme activities, rice grain composition and yield. The results showed that in DNF the antibiotic was accumulated 627% more than NF treatment in rice grains while in leaves there was no significant difference under both treatments. The proteomic revealed that differentially expressed identified proteins were involved in carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, photosynthesis and mRNA binding. However, the metabolomics results showed that the abundance of metabolites related to RNA biosynthesis and amino acid metabolism were more affected. The disruptions caused in rice plant under DNF treatment become more severe, this makes it more susceptible than individual D and NF treatment. These findings improve our knowledge about the response of rice plant to cope with antibiotic contamination alone and in combination with drought.

The remarkable application of tin oxide in various domains is indebted to its photoelectronic merits. However, significant efforts to discover its photocatalytic potential were restricted through arduous challenges, which were the amelioration of light-harvesting and -utilizing. In fact, the uncommon light absorption energy has drawn veil over the brilliance of astounding oxidation potential, which is much more than that of TiO2. Herein, our attention was focused on the taking advantages of self-template structure for simultaneously enjoying the two sides of photoelectronic justification as well as the S-step system for eminent charge dissociation. In this regard, the optimized Cu-modified SnO2 yolk-shell ((5)YS-CuSnO) spheres were engineered through the copper modulation into glycerate-assisted metal-organic structure. As a result, the exceptional light-harvesting was achieved through desirable defects and oxygen vacancy resulted from Cu-doping, and also efficient light-utilization was obtained by the multi-scattering/reflection effect resulted from multi-shell configuration. After the effectual incorporation (40 wt⁒) of (5)YS-CuSnO was encapsulated into the V2O5-decorated wrinkled g-C3N4 lamella (VO-WCN), the dual S-step VO-WCN@(5)YS-CuSnO introduced unprecedented levofloxacin (LFC) decontamination performance, which was kinetically 5.2 and 30.2-times greater than of the (5)YS-CuSnO and bare SnO2 yolk-shell. The conspicuous fulfillment of nanocomposite was manifested in the LFC mineralization, pharmaceutical effluent treatment within 360 min, and successive cycling reactions. The fusion of the extraordinary architecture of YS-CuSnO with S-Step system not only initiates the facile and practical photocatalytic exploitation, but shade light on some undeveloped side of tin oxide.

Combined effect and mechanism of microplastic with different particle sizes and levofloxacin on developing Rana nigromaculata: Insights from thyroid axis regulation and immune system

Microplastics (MPs) usually appear in the aquatic environment as complex pollutants with other environmental pollutants, such as levofloxacin (LVFX). After 45-day exposure to LVFX and MPs with different particle sizes at environmental levels, we measured the weight, snout-to-vent length (SVL), and development stages of Rana nigromaculata. Furthermore, we analyzed proteins and genes related to immune system and thyroid axis regulation, intestinal histological, and bioaccumulation of LVFX and MPs in the intestine and brain to further explore the toxic mechanism of co-exposure. We found MPs exacerbated the effect of LVFX on growth and development, and the order of inhibitory effects is as follows: LVFX-MP3>LVFX-MP1>LVFX-MP2. 0.1 and 1 μm MP could penetrate the blood-brain barrier, interact with LVFX in the brain, and affect growth and development by regulating thyroid axis. Besides, LVFX with MPs caused severer interference on thyroid axis compared with LVFX alone. However, 10 μm MP was prone to accumulating in the intestine, causing severe histopathological changes, interfering with the intestinal immune system and influencing growth and development through immune enzyme activity. Thus, we concluded that MPs could regulate the thyroid axis by interfering with the intestinal immune system.

The significance of environmentally bioavailable antimicrobials in driving antimicrobial resistance in soils

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) stands as an escalating public health crisis fueled by antimicrobial residues in the environment, particularly in soil, which acts as a reservoir for antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Merely quantifying the total extractable concentration of antimicrobials, instead of bioavailable fractions, may substantially underestimate their minimal selection concentration for propagating ARGs. To shed light on the role of bioavailability in ARG abundance within soil, a systematic bioavailability assessment method was established for accurately quantifying the partitioning of multi-class antimicrobials in representative Chinese soils. Microcosm studies unveiled that antimicrobials persisting in the bioavailable fraction could potentially prolong their selection pressure duration to trigger AMR. Notably, the co-occurrence of pesticide or steroid hormone influenced the development trends of ARG subtypes, with fluoroquinolone resistance genes (RGs) being particularly susceptible. Partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) analysis uncovered potentially distinct induction mechanisms of antimicrobials: observable results suggested that extractable residual concentration may exert a direct selection pressure on the development of ARGs, while bioavailable concentration could potentially play a stepwise role in affecting the abundance of mobile genetic elements and initiating ARG dissemination. Such unprecedented scrutinization of the interplay between bioavailable antimicrobials in soils and ARG abundance provides valuable insights into strategizing regulatory policy or guidelines for soil remediation.

Unveiling antibiotic contamination in surface water: A study of the Huaihe River Basin's Huaibei Plain, a significant Chinese herbal medicine planting region

The abuse of antibiotics has caused the accumulation of antibiotic residues in environmental media, threatening the ecosystem and human health. Many studies on the distribution of aqueous antibiotics have been reported. However, the pollution status of antibiotics in the environment in Chinese herbal medicine planting areas is rarely comprehensively clarified, resulting in the lack of updated pollution data and conducive suggestions for ecological cultivation and sustainable development of Chinese herbal medicine. Thus, we comprehensively investigated the distribution, profiles, sources, and risks of the antibiotics in the surface water of an important tributary of the Huaihe River Basin, located in Bozhou City, a significant Chinese herbal medicine planting region. Solid-phase extraction coupled with an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer (SPE-UPLC-MS) was utilized to detect the antibiotics in the water. 27 kinds of antibiotics were identified with total concentrations ranging from 75.01 to 1737.99 ng·L-1, with doxycycline (DC) and doxycycline hydrochloride (DCH) possessed the highest concentration. And DC, DCH, oxilinic acid (OA), sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), clarithromycin (CLA), and roxithromycinum (ROX) were the main antibiotics detected in this basin. Correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that animal husbandry was the primary source of antibiotics. Furthermore, the ecological risk assessment revealed that certain antibiotics could seriously threaten the survival of aquatic organisms, implying that local Chinese herbal medicines might be at similar growth risk. The drinking risk assessment showed that antibiotics in the water posed low risks for human, and children faced a greater drinking risk than adults. The study can help to facilitate the management of aqueous antibiotic pollution for the ecological cultivation and safe production of Chinese herbal medicine.

Norfloxacin affects inorganic nitrogen compound transformation in tailwater containing Corbicula fluminea

The Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea, commonly used in engineered wetlands receiving tailwater, affects nitrogen compound transformation in water. This study investigates how a commonly observed antibiotic in tailwater, norfloxacin, impact nitrogen compound transformation in tailwater containing C. fluminea. The clam was exposed to artificial tailwater with norfloxacin (0, 0.2, 20, and 2000 μg/L) for 15 days. Water properties, C. fluminea ecotoxicity responses, microorganism composition and nitrification- or denitrification-related enzyme activities were measured. Results revealed norfloxacin-induced increases and reductions in tailwater NH4+ and NO2- concentrations, respectively, along with antioxidant system inhibition, organ histopathological damage and disruption of water filtering and digestion system. Microorganism composition, especially biodiversity indices, varied with medium (clam organs and exposure water) and norfloxacin concentrations. Norfloxacin reduced NO2- content by lowering the ratio between microbial nitrifying enzyme (decreased hydroxylamine oxidoreductase and nitrite oxidoreductase activity) and denitrifying enzyme (increased nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase activity) in tailwater. Elevated NH4+ content resulted from upregulated ammonification and inhibited nitrification of microorganisms in tailwater, as well as increased ammonia emission from C. fluminea due to organ damage and metabolic disruption of the digestion system. Overall, this study offers insights into using benthic organisms to treat tailwater with antibiotic residues, especially regarding nitrogen treatment.

Occurrence and seasonal variations of antibiotic micro-pollutants in the Wei River, China

In this study, a systematic monitoring campaign of 30 antibiotics belonging to tetracyclines (TCs), macrolides (MLs), fluoroquinolones (FQs) and sulfonamides (SAs) was performed in the Xi'an section of the Wei River during three sampling events (December 2021, June 2022, and September 2022). The total concentrations of antibiotics in water ranged from 297 to 461 ng/L with high detection frequencies ranging from 45% to 100% for the various antibiotics. A marked seasonal variation in concentrations was found with total antibiotic concentrations in winter being 1.5 and 2 times higher than those in the summer and autumn seasons, respectively. The main contaminants in both winter and summer seasons were FQs, but in the autumn SAs were more abundant, suggesting different seasonal sources or more effective runoff for certain antibiotics during periods of rainfall. Combined analysis using redundancy and clustering analysis indicated that the distribution of antibiotics in the Wei River was affected by the confluence with dilution of tributaries and outlet of domestic sewage. Ecological risk assessment based on risk quotient (RQ) showed that most antibiotics in water samples posed insignificant risk to fish and green algae, as well as insignificant to low risk to Daphnia. The water-sediment distribution coefficients of SAs were higher than those of other antibiotics, indicating that particle-bound runoff could be a significant source for this class of antibiotics.

Prioritization of organic contaminants in China's groundwater based on national-scale monitoring data and their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity

There has been increasing concern regarding the adverse environmental and health effects of organic pollutants. A list of priority control organic pollutants (PCOPs) can provide regulatory frameworks for the use and monitoring of organic compounds in the environment. In this study, 20,010 groundwater samples were collected from 15 "first level" groundwater resource zones in China. Fifty (50) organic compounds were analyzed based on their prevalence, occurrence, and physicochemical properties (persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity). Results showed that 16 PCOPs, including 12 pesticides, 3 aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs), and 1 phthalate ester, were recognized. Pesticides and AHs accounted for 75 % and 18.75 % of the high-priority pollutants, respectively. There were significant differences in PCOPs between confined and phreatic groundwater. Higher concentrations of pesticides were mainly detected in phreatic groundwater. PCOPs detected in samples from the 15 groundwater resource zones were mainly pesticides and AHs. The groundwater data indicate that the organic compounds detected in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), Yangtze River Basin (YZB), Liaohe River Basin (LRB), and Songhua River Basin (SRB) are mainly categorized as Q1 (high priority) and Q2 (medium priority) pollutants based on the contaminants ranking system in China. The findings from this study offer a snapshot of the wide distribution of PCOPs in the surveyed regions, and are expected to establishing treatment and prevention measures at both the regional and national levels in China.

Effects of antibiotics on microbial nitrogen cycling and N2O emissions: A review

Sulfonamides, quinolones, tetracyclines, and macrolides are the most prevalent classes of antibiotics used in both medical treatment and agriculture. The misuse of antibiotics leads to their extensive dissemination in the environment. These antibiotics can modify the structure and functionality of microbial communities, consequently impacting microbial-mediated nitrogen cycling processes including nitrification, denitrification, and anammox. They can change the relative abundance of nirK/norB contributing to the emission of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the presence of these four antibiotic classes across different environmental matrices and synthesizes current knowledge of their effects on the nitrogen cycle, including the underlying mechanisms. Such an overview is crucial for understanding the ecological impacts of antibiotics and for guiding future research directions. The presence of antibiotics in the environment varies widely, with significant differences in concentration and type across various settings. We conducted a comprehensive review of over 70 research articles that compare various aspects including processes, antibiotics, concentration ranges, microbial sources, experimental methods, and mechanisms of influence. Antibiotics can either inhibit, have no effect, or even stimulate nitrification, denitrification, and anammox, depending on the experimental conditions. The influence of antibiotics on the nitrogen cycle is characterized by dose-dependent responses, primarily inhibiting nitrification, denitrification, and anammox. This is achieved through alterations in microbial community composition and diversity, carbon source utilization, enzyme activities, electron transfer chain function, and the abundance of specific functional enzymes and antibiotic resistance genes. These alterations can lead to diminished removal of reactive nitrogen and heightened nitrous oxide emissions, potentially exacerbating the greenhouse effect and related environmental issues. Future research should consider diverse reaction mechanisms and expand the scope to investigate the combined effects of multiple antibiotics, as well as their interactions with heavy metals and other chemicals or organisms.

Chronic toxic effects of erythromycin and its photodegradation products on microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa

The photodegradation products (PDPs) of antibiotics in the aquatic environment received increasing concern, but their chronic effects on microalgae remain unclear. This study initially focused on examining the acute effects of erythromycin (ERY), then explored the chronic impacts of ERY PDPs on Chlorella pyrenoidosa. ERY of 4.0 - 32 mg/L ERY notably inhibited the cell growth and chlorophyll synthesis. The determined 96 h median effective concentration of ERY to C. pyrenoidosa was 11.78 mg/L. Higher concentrations of ERY induced more serious oxidative damage, antioxidant enzymes alleviated the oxidative stress. 6 PDPs (PDP749, PDP747, PDP719, PDP715, PDP701 and PDP557) were identified in the photodegradation process of ERY. The predicted combined toxicity of PDPs increased in the first 3 h, then decreased. Chronic exposure showed a gradual decreasing inhibition on microalgae growth and chlorophyll content. The acute effect of ERY PDPs manifested as growth stimulation, but the chronic effect manifested as growth inhibition. The malonaldehyde contents decreased with the degradation time of ERY at 7, 14 and 21 d. However, the malonaldehyde contents of ERY PDPs treatments were elevated compared to those in the control group after 21 d. Risk assessment still need to consider the potential toxicity of degradation products under long-term exposure.

Indirect Impact of Eutrophication on Occurrence, Air-Water Exchange, and Vertical Sinking Fluxes of Antibiotics in a Subtropical River

A significant challenge that warrants attention is the influence of eutrophication on the biogeochemical cycle of emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments. Antibiotics pollution in the eutrophic Pearl River in South China was examined to offer new insights into the effects of eutrophication on the occurrence, air-water exchange fluxes (Fair-water), and vertical sinking fluxes (Fsinking) of antibiotics. Antibiotics transferred to the atmosphere primarily through aerosolization controlled by phytoplankton biomass and significant spatiotemporal variations were observed in the Fair-water of individual antibiotics throughout all sites and seasons. The Fsinking of ∑AB14 (defined as a summary of 14 antibiotics) was 750.46 ± 283.19, 242.71 ± 122.87, and 346.74 ± 249.52 ng of m-2 d-1 in spring, summer, and winter seasons. Eutrophication indirectly led to an elevated pH, which reduced seasonal Fair-water of antibiotics, sediment aromaticity, and phytoplankton hydrophobicity, thereby decreasing antibiotic accumulation in sediments and phytoplankton. Negative correlations were further found between Fsinking and the water column daily loss of antibiotics with phytoplankton biomass. The novelty of this study is to provide new complementary knowledge for the regulation mechanisms of antibiotics by phytoplankton biological pump, offering novel perspectives and approaches to understanding the coupling between eutrophication and migration and fate of antibiotics in a subtropical eutrophic river.

Encapsulate Co3O4 within ultrathin graphene sheets to enhance peroxymonosulfate activation by tuning surface electronic structures

Heterojunctions composed of cobalt-based materials and carbon materials have been recognized as the efficient catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to generate reactive oxygen species for the removal of environmental contaminants. However, the role of carbon materials in promoting the heterojunction systems has not been fully understood. This study synthesized a heterojunction material of graphene sheets encapsulating Co3O4 (GCO-500) through the pyrolysis of cobalt MOF and applied it to activate PMS for the removal of lomefloxacin. The results showed a high removal rate of 93.59 % with a degradation rate of k1 = 0.0156 min-1. Co3O4 clusters was encapsulated within ultrathin graphene sheets (<2 nm). DFT calculations revealed that graphene layers improve the electron transfer ability of Co3O4 and increased the d-band center of Co3O4 (-1.61 eV) that promote the adsorption of PMS on GCO-500 (-1.32 eV). In the meanwhile, organic pollutant was enriched in graphene layers with high adsorption energy (-13.08 eV), which greatly enhanced the degradation efficiency of pharmaceuticals. This study provides an effective catalyst for PMS activation and sheds light on the fundamental electronic-level understanding of cobalt-based and carbon heterojunction catalysts in PMS activation.

Cytochrome P450 enzymes in the black-spotted frog (Pelophylax nigromaculatus): molecular characterization and upregulation of expression by sulfamethoxazole

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes are crucial for the detoxification of xenobiotics, cellular metabolism, and homeostasis. This study investigated the molecular characterization of CYP enzymes in the black-spotted frog, Pelophylax nigromaculatus, and examined the regulation of CYP expression in response to chronic exposure to the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) at various environmental concentrations (0, 1, 10, and 100 μg/L). The full-length cDNA of Pn-CYP26B1 was identified. The sequence included open reading frames of 1,536 bp, encoding proteins comprising 511 amino acids. The signature motif, FxxGxxxCxG, was highly conserved when compared with a number of selected animal species. SMX significantly upregulated the expression of the protein CYP26B1 in frog livers at concentrations of 1 and 10 μg/L. SMX showed an affinity for CYP26B1 of -7.6 kcal/mol, indicating a potential mechanism for SMX detoxification or adaptation of the frog. These findings contributed to our understanding of the environmental impact of antibiotics on amphibian species and underscored the importance of CYP enzymes in maintaining biochemical homeostasis under exposure to xenobiotic stress.

Occurrence, fate, and ecological risk of antibiotics in wastewater treatment plants in China: A review

This review offers a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, fate, and ecological risk associated with six major categories of antibiotics found in influent, effluent, and sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China. Further exploration includes examining the correlation between antibiotic residual rates in the effluents and process parameters of urban WWTPs across the country. Lastly, a nationwide and urban cluster-specific evaluation of the ecological risk posed by antibiotics in WWTPs is conducted. The findings reveal that the average concentrations of antibiotics in influent, effluent, and sludge from urban WWTPs in China are 786.2 ng/L, 311.2 ng/L, and 186.8 μg/kg, respectively. Among the detected antibiotics, 42% exhibit moderate to high ecological risk in the effluent, with ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, azithromycin, and tetracycline posing moderate to high ecological risks in sludge. The current biological treatment processes in WWTPs demonstrate inefficacy in removing antibiotics. Hence, there is a pressing need to develop and integrate innovative technologies, such as advanced oxidation processes. This review aims to offer a more comprehensive understanding and identify priority antibiotics for control to effectively manage antibiotic pollution within WWTPs at both national and regional levels.

Unlocking the power of activated carbon-mediated peracetic acid activation for efficient antibiotics abatement in groundwater: Coupling the processes of electron transfer, radical production, and adsorption

The activation of peracetic acid (PAA) by activated carbon (AC) is a promising approach for reducing micropollutants in groundwater. However, to harness the PAA/AC system's potential and achieve sustainable and low-impact groundwater remediation, it is crucial to quantify the individual contributions of active species. In this study, we developed a combined degradation kinetic and adsorption mass transfer model to elucidate the roles of free radicals, electron transfer processes (ETP), and adsorption on the degradation of antibiotics by PAA in groundwater. Our findings reveal that ETP predominantly facilitated the activation of PAA by modified activated carbon (AC600), contributing to ∼61% of the overall degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The carbonyl group (CO) on the surface of AC600 was identified as a probable site for the ETP. Free radicals contributed to ∼39% of the degradation, while adsorption was negligible. Thermodynamic and activation energy analyses indicate that the degradation of SMX within the PAA/AC600 system requires a relatively low energy input (27.66 kJ/mol), which is within the lower range of various heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions, thus making it easily achievable. These novel insights enhance our understanding of the AC600-mediated PAA activation mechanism and lay the groundwork for developing efficient and sustainable technologies for mitigating groundwater pollution. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The antibiotics in groundwater raises alarming environmental concerns. As groundwater serves as a primary source of drinking water for nearly half the global population, the development of eco-friendly technologies for antibiotic-contaminated groundwater remediation becomes imperative. The innovative PAA/AC600 system demonstrates significant efficacy in degrading micropollutants, particularly sulfonamide antibiotics. By integrating degradation kinetics and adsorption mass transfer models, this study sheds light on the intricate mechanisms involved, emphasizing the potential of carbon materials as sustainable tools in the ongoing battle for clean and safe groundwater.

Biochar and zero-valent iron alleviated sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline co-stress on the long-term system performance of bioretention cells: Insights into microbial community, antibiotic resistance genes and functional genes

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), known as emerging contaminants, have raised widespread concern due to their potential environmental and human health risks. In this study, a conventional bioretention cell (C-BRC) and three modified bioretention cells with biochar (BC-BRC), microbial fuel cell coupled/biochar (EBC-BRC) and zero-valent iron/biochar (Fe/BC-BRC) were established and two antibiotics, namely sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and tetracycline (TC), were introduced into the systems in order to thoroughly investigate the co-stress associated with the long-term removal of pollutants, dynamics of microbial community, ARGs and functional genes in wastewater treatment. The results demonstrated that the SMX and TC co-stress significantly inhibited the removal of total nitrogen (TN) (C-BRC: 37.46%; BC-BRC: 41.64%; EBC-BRC: 55.60%) and total phosphorous (TP) (C-BRC: 53.11%; BC-BRC: 55.36%; EBC-BRC: 62.87%) in C-BRC, BC-BRC and EBC-BRC, respectively, while Fe/BC-BRC exhibited profoundly stable and high removal efficiencies (TN: 89.33%; TP: 98.36%). Remarkably, greater than 99% removals of SMX and TC were achieved in three modified BRCs compared with C-BRC (SMX: 30.86 %; TC: 59.29%). The decreasing absolute abundances of denitrifying bacteria and the low denitrification functional genes (nirK: 2.80 × 105-5.97 × 105 copies/g; nirS: 7.22 × 105-1.69 × 106 copies/g) were responsible for the lower TN removals in C-BRC, BC-BRC and EBC-BRC. The amendment of Fe/BC successfully detoxified SMX and TC to functional bacteria. Furthermore, the co-stress of antibiotics stimulated the propagation of ARGs (sulI, sulII, tetA and tetC) in substrates of all BRCs and only Fe/BC-BRC effectively reduced all the ARGs in effluent by an order of magnitude. The findings contribute to developing robust ecological wastewater treatment technologies to simultaneously remove nutrients and multiple antibiotics.

Enrofloxacin exposure undermines gut health and disrupts neurotransmitters along the microbiota-gut-brain axis in zebrafish

The environmental prevalence of antibiotic residues poses a potential threat to gut health and may thereby disrupt brain function through the microbiota-gut-brain axis. However, little is currently known about the impacts of antibiotics on gut health and neurotransmitters along the microbiota-gut-brain axis in fish species. Taking enrofloxacin (ENR) as a representative, the impacts of antibiotic exposure on the gut structural integrity, intestinal microenvironment, and neurotransmitters along the microbiota-gut-brain axis were evaluated in zebrafish in this study. Data obtained demonstrated that exposure of zebrafish to 28-day environmentally realistic levels of ENR (6 and 60 μg/L) generally resulted in marked elevation of two intestinal integrity biomarkers (diamine oxidase (DAO) and malondialdehyde (MDA), upregulation of genes that encode inter-epithelial tight junction proteins, and histological alterations in gut as well as increase of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in plasma, indicating an evident impairment of the structural integrity of gut. Moreover, in addition to significantly altered neurotransmitters, markedly higher levels of LPS while less amount of two short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), namely acetic acid and valeric acid, were detected in the gut of ENR-exposed zebrafish, suggesting a disruption of gut microenvironment upon ENR exposure. Along with corresponding changes detected in gut, significant disruption of neurotransmitters in brain indicated by marked alterations in the contents of neurotransmitters, the activity of acetylcholin esterase (AChE), and the expression of neurotransmitter-related genes were also observed. These findings suggest exposure to environmental antibiotic residues may impair gut health and disrupt neurotransmitters along the microbiota-gut-brain axis in zebrafish. Considering the prevalence of antibiotic residues in environments and the high homology of zebrafish to other vertebrates including human, the risk of antibiotic exposure to the health of wild animals as well as human deserves more attention.

Comparative study of reactive oxygen species and tetracycline degradation pathways in catalytic peroxodisulfate activation by asymmetric mesoporous TiO2 and the corresponding controlled-release materials

The removal of trace amounts of antibiotics from water environments while simultaneously avoiding potential environmental hazards during the treatment is still a challenge. In this work, green, harmless, and novel asymmetric mesoporous TiO2 (A-mTiO2) was combined with peroxodisulfate (PDS) as active components in a controlled-release material (CRM) system for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) in the dark. The formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the degradation pathways of TC during catalytic PDS activation by A-mTiO2 powder catalysts and the CRMs were thoroughly studied. Due to its asymmetric mesoporous structure, there were abundant Ti3+/Ti4+ couples and oxygen vacancies in A-mTiO2, resulting in excellent activity in the activation of PDS for TC degradation, with a mineralization rate of 78.6%. In CRMs, ROS could first form during PDS activation by A-mTiO2 and subsequently dissolve from the CRMs to degrade TC in groundwater. Due to the excellent performance and good stability of A-mTiO2, the resulting constructed CRMs could effectively degrade TC in simulated groundwater over a long period (more than 20 days). From electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and TC degradation experiments, it was interesting to find that the ROS formed during PDS activation by A-mTiO2 powder catalysts and CRMs were different, but the degradation pathways for TC were indeed similar in the two systems. In PDS activation by A-mTiO2, besides the free hydroxyl radical (·OH), singlet oxygen (1O2) worked as a major ROS participating in TC degradation. For CRMs, the immobilization of A-mTiO2 inside CRMs made it difficult to capture superoxide radicals (·O2-), and continuously generate 1O2. In addition, the formation of sulfate radicals (·SO4-), and ·OH during the release process of CRMs was consistent with PDS activation by the A-mTiO2 powder catalyst. The eco-friendly CRMs had a promising potential for practical application in the remediation of organic pollutants from groundwater.

Sulfonamide-induced DNA hypomethylation disturbed sugar metabolism in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

DNA methylation is well-accepted as a bridge to unravel the complex interplay between genome and environmental exposures, and its alteration regulated the cellular metabolic responses towards pollutants. However, the mechanism underlying site-specific aberrant DNA methylation and metabolic disorders under pollutant stresses remained elusive. Herein, the multilevel omics interferences of sulfonamides (i.e., sulfadiazine and sulfamerazine), a group of antibiotics pervasive in farmland soils, towards rice in 14 days of 1 mg/L hydroponic exposure were systematically evaluated. Metabolome and transcriptome analyses showed that 57.1-71.4 % of mono- and disaccharides were accumulated, and the differentially expressed genes were involved in the promotion of sugar hydrolysis, as well as the detoxification of sulfonamides. Most differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were hypomethylated ones (accounting for 87-95 %), and 92 % of which were located in the CHH context (H = A, C, or T base). KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that CHH-DMRs in the promoter regions were enriched in sugar metabolism. To reveal the significant hypomethylation of CHH, multi-spectroscopic and thermodynamic approaches, combined with molecular simulation were conducted to investigate the molecular interaction between sulfonamides and DNA in different sequence contexts, and the result demonstrated that sulfonamides would insert into the minor grooves of DNA, and exhibited a stronger affinity with the CHH contexts of DNA compared to CG or CHG contexts. Computational modeling of DNA 3D structures further confirmed that the binding led to a pitch increase of 0.1 Å and a 3.8° decrease in the twist angle of DNA in the CHH context. This specific interaction and the downregulation of methyltransferase CMT2 (log2FC = -4.04) inhibited the DNA methylation. These results indicated that DNA methylation-based assessment was useful for metabolic toxicity prediction and health risk assessment.

Photochemical behaviors of sludge extracellular polymeric substances from bio-treated effluents towards antibiotic degradation: Distinguish the main photosensitive active component and its environmental implication

Activated sludge extracellular polymeric substances (ASEPSs) comprise most dissolved organic matters (DOMs) in the tail water. However, the understanding of the link between the photolysis of antibiotic and the photo-reactivity/photo-persistence of ASEPS components is limited. This study first investigated the photochemical behaviors of ASEPS's components (humic acids (HA), hydrophobic substances (HOS) and hydrophilic substances (HIS)) separated from municipal sludge's EPS (M-EPS) and nitrification sludge's EPS (N-EPS) in the photolysis of sulfadiazine (SDZ). The results showed that 60% of SDZ was removed by the M-EPS, but the effect in the separated components was weakened, and only 24% - 39% was degraded. However, 58% of SDZ was cleaned by HOS in N-EPS, which was 23% higher than full N-EPS. M-EPS components had lower steady-state concentrations of triplet intermediates (3EPS*), hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) than M-EPS, but N-EPS components had the highest concentrations (5.96 ×10-15, 8.44 ×10-18, 4.56 ×10-13 M, respectively). The changes of CO, C-O and O-CO groups in HA and HOS potentially correspond to reactive specie's generation. These groups change little in HIS, which may make it have radiation resistance. HCO-3 and NO-3 decreased the indirect photolysis of SDZ, and its by-product N-(2-Pyrimidinyl)1,4-benzenediamine presents high environmental risk.

Spatial distribution, mass flux, and ecological risk of antibiotics in Taiwan and Luzon Straits: A case in the West Pacific Region

Emerging pollutants are hazardous to the ecological environment and human health, and these issues have attracted increasing attention from scholars. In the current study, the Taiwan Strait is long and narrow, highly influenced by terrestrial domains, and frequently disturbed by human activities. Conversely, the Luzon Strait is an open sea far from the shore, and the impact of human activities on it is minimal. The description of antibiotics in two different types of seas revealed that contaminants were most commonly detected in both straits. In particular, the coasts of the Minjiang River, Jinjiang River, and Jiulong River were found to be pollution hotspots in the Taiwan Strait. The calculation of risk quotients revealed that antibiotics were more sensitive to algae. Furthermore, estimation of the risk quotients of the mixtures found that antibiotics in the environment do not pose a high risk to aquatic organisms at different trophic levels.

Core-Shell MnFe Nanocatalyst Derived from Prussian Blue Analogs for Peroxymonosulfate Activation: Nonradical Mechanism and Bimetallic Valence Cycle

Sulfamethazine (SAT) is widely present in sediment, soil, rivers, and groundwater. Unfortunately, traditional water treatment technologies are inefficient at eliminating SAT from contaminated water. Therefore, developing an effective and ecologically friendly treatment procedure to effectively remove SAT is critical. This has raised concerns about its potential impact on the environment and human health. In this study, metal-organic-inorganic composites consisting of graphene-encapsulated Fe-Mn metal catalyst (Mn3Fe1-NC) were synthesized by calcining MnFe Prussian blue analogs (PBA) under a nitrogen atmosphere. The composites were applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and facilitate the degradation of SAT in aquatic environments. The Mn3Fe1-NC, dosed with 5 mg, in combination with PMS, dosed with 1.5 mmol L-1, achieved a 91.8% degradation efficiency of SAT. The transformation of the CN skeleton led to the formation of a carbon shell structure, which consequently reduced metal ion leaching from the material. At various pH levels, the iron and manganese ions were observed to leach out at levels lower than 0.1392 and 0.0580 mg L-1, respectively. In contrast, the Mn3Fe1-NC was found to be minimally impacted by pH levels and coexisting ions present in the aqueous environment. Radical burst experiments and electrochemical analysis tests verified that degradation primarily occurs through the nonradical pathway of electron transfer. The active sites responsible for this process were identified as the Mn (IV) and graphitic-N atoms on the material, which facilitate direct electron transfer. Additionally, the presence of Fe atoms promotes the valence cycling of Mn atoms. This study introduces new insights into the reaction mechanism and the constitutive relationship of catalytic centers in nonradical oxidation reactions.

Bioinspired Stevia rebaudiana Green Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles for the Adsorptive Removal of Antibiotics from Water

Green zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) synthesized using Stevia rebaudiana as a reducing agent were investigated as ecofriendly adsorbents for the removal of the antibiotics ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TET) from water. Green ZnO NPs were synthesized using a rapid novel approach that did not require annealing or calcination at high temperatures to produce mesoporous NPs with a size range of 37.36-71.33 nm, a specific surface area of 15.28 m2/g, and a negative surface charge of -15 mV at pH 5. The green ZnO NPs exhibited an antioxidant activity of 85.57% at 250 μg/mL and an antibacterial activity with MIC and MBC of 50 and 100 mg/mL, respectively, against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The best adsorption performance was achieved using a 4 g/L dose and pH 5, yielding, respectively, 86.77 ± 0.82% removal and 27.07 ± 0.26 mg/g adsorption capacity for CIP at 10 mg/L and 67.86 ± 3.41% and 15.88 ± 0.37 mg/g for TET at 25 mg/L. The green ZnO NPs achieved 79.71% ± 0.28 and 61.55% ± 0.53 removal of 10 mg/L CIP and 25 mg/L TET, respectively, in a spiked tap water binary system of the two contaminants. Adsorption of CIP and TET occurred mainly via electrostatic interactions, whereby CIP was bound more strongly than TET by virtue of its charge and size. The synthesis and adsorption processes were evaluated by a stepwise regression statistical model to optimize their parameters. Lastly, the green ZnO NPs were regenerated and reused for 5 cycles, indicating their functionality as simple, reusable, and low-cost adsorbents for the removal of CIP and TET from wastewater, in accordance with SDGs #6 and 12 for the sustainable management of water.

Assessment of sulfamethoxazole removal by three wetland plant species under hydroponic conditions: uptake, accumulation, and physiological responses

Plants play a crucial role as a removal pathway in constructed wetlands, demonstrating the ability to absorb and tolerate antibiotics from wastewater. However, the specific contribution of plants in this regard has not yet to be sufficiently established. To gain a more comprehensive insight into the associated processes, we selected three common wetland plant species, Canna indica L. (C. indica), Cyperus alternifolius L. (C. alternifolius), and Thalia dealbata Fraser (T. dealbata), to evaluate their capacity for uptake, accumulation, and physiological response in the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) at varying initial concentrations (10, 30, 100, and 300 µg/L) under hydroponic conditions. The results showed that SMX removal was more efficient at lower concentrations (10 and 30 µg/L) than at higher concentrations (100 and 300 µg/L). Moreover, plant systems were found to consistently outperform unplanted systems in SMX removal. Among the assessed species, C. indica was identified as being relatively effective in the removal of SMX, whereas the performance of C. alternifolius was notably less pronounced. A positive correlation was observed between the concentration of SMX in the plant tissues and that in the external aqueous medium. However, plant tissue residues contributed only a minor fraction to the overall removal of SMX. Wetland plants absorb SMX through their roots, and we accordingly detected significantly higher concentrations in submerged plant tissues. Furthermore, we also detected reductions in net photosynthetic rates indicative of potential phytotoxicity, which is associated with the accumulation of antibiotic in the shoot tissues. Accumulation of SMX in the roots and rhizomes was also found to be associated with the development of shorter roots, with this effect becoming more pronounced with an increase in the concentration of exogenous SMX. However, despite these adverse effects, plants can detoxify antibiotics via the glutathione pathway. Of the assessed plant species, C. indica was identified as the most SMX tolerant, as indicated by Km and Vmax values, with C. alternifolius being the least tolerant. Our findings in this study reveal the potential value of wetland plants in the sequestration of antibiotics and provide evidence for the underlying mechanisms of action. These findings could make an important contribution to the implementation of phytoremediation in antibiotic-contaminated water.

Intraparticle sorption and desorption of antibiotics

Intraparticle domains are the critical locations for storing contaminants and retarding contaminant transport in subsurface environments. While the kinetics and extent of antibiotics sorption and desorption in subsurface materials have been extensively studied, their behaviors in intraparticle domains have not been well understood. This study investigated the sorption and desorption of antibiotics (ATs) in the intraparticle domains using quartz grains and clay, and antibiotic tetracycline (TC) and levofloxacin (LEV) as examples that are commonly present in groundwater systems. Batch experiments coupled with the analyses using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques were performed to investigate the sorption and desorption kinetics, and to provide insights into the intraparticle sorption and desorption of TC and LEV. Results indicated that both TC and LEV with different physiochemical properties can migrate into intraparticle domains that were consistent with sorptive diffusion. The rate and extent of the sorption are a function of intraparticle surface area and properties, pore volume and connectivity, and ionic properties of the ATs. The sorptive diffusion led to the slow desorption of both TC and LEV after their sorption, apparently showing an irreversible desorption behavior (with desorption percentage about 1.86-20.51%). These results implied that intraparticle domains can be important locations for storing ATs, retarding ATs transport, and may serve as a long-term secondary source for groundwater contamination.

Revealing discrepancies and drivers in the impact of lomefloxacin on groundwater denitrification throughout microbial community growth and succession

The coexistence of antibiotics and nitrates has raised great concern about antibiotic's impact on denitrification. However, conflicting results in these studies are very puzzling, possibly due to differences in microbial succession stages. This study investigated the effects of the high-priority urgent antibiotic, lomefloxacin (LOM), on groundwater denitrification throughout microbial growth and succession. The results demonstrated that LOM's impact on denitrification varied significantly across three successional stages, with the most pronounced effects exhibited in the initial stage (53.8% promotion at 100 ng/L-LOM, 84.6% inhibition at 100 μg/L-LOM), followed by the decline stage (13.3-18.2% inhibition), while no effect in the stable stage. Hence, a distinct pattern encompassing susceptibility, insusceptibility, and sub-susceptibility in LOM's impact on denitrification was discovered. Microbial metabolism and environment variation drove the pattern, with bacterial numbers and antibiotic resistance as primary influencers (22.5% and 15.3%, p < 0.01), followed by carbon metabolism and microbial community (5.0% and 3.68%, p < 0.01). The structural equation model confirmed results reliability. Bacterial numbers and resistance influenced susceptibility by regulating compensation and bacteriostasis, while carbon metabolism and microbial community impacted energy, electron transfer, and gene composition. These findings provide valuable insights into the complex interplay between antibiotics and denitrification patterns in groundwater.

Monospecific and ultrasensitive detection of ofloxacin: A computational chemistry-assisted hapten screening strategy and analysis of molecular recognition mechanism

Contamination in food and the environment with fluoroquinolones (FQs) has become a serious threat to the global ecological balance and public health safety. Ofloxacin (OFL) is one of the most widely utilized sterilization agents in FQs. In the process of monitoring OFL, broad-spectrum monoclonal antibodies (mAb) cannot meet the demand for monospecific detection. Here, a computational chemistry-assisted hapten screening strategy was proposed in this study. Differences in the properties of antigenic epitopes were precisely extracted through a comprehensive comparative study of 16 common FQs molecules and a monospecific and ultrasensitive mAb-3B4 for OFL was successfully prepared. The screened fleroxacin (FLE) hapten was applied in a heterologous competition strategy resulting in a 20-fold improvement in the half inhibitory concentration (IC50) of mAb-3B4 to 0.0375 μg L-1 and cross-reacted only with marbofloxacin (MAR) in regulated FQs. In addition, a single-chain variable fragment (scFv) for OFL was constructed for the first time with an IC50 of 0.378 μg L-1. Molecular recognition mechanism studies validated the reliability of this strategy and revealed the key amino acid sites responsible for OFL specificity and sensitivity. Finally, ic-ELISA and GICA were established for OFL in real samples. This work provides new ideas for the preparation of monospecific mAb and improves the monitoring system of FQs.

Critical role of multiple antibiotics on the denitrification rate in groundwater: Field investigative proof

The impact of antibiotics on denitrification has emerged as a significant topic; however, there is a dearth of mechanistic understanding regarding the effects of multiple antibiotics at the ng/L level on denitrification in groundwater. This study conducted five field samplings between March 2019 and July 2021 at two representative monitoring wells. The investigation utilized metagenomic sequencing to unveil the antibiotic mechanisms influencing denitrification. Results revealed the detection of 16 out of 64 antibiotics, with a maximum detection frequency and total concentration of 100 % and 187 ng/L, respectively. Additionally, both nitrate and total antibiotic concentrations exhibited a gradual decrease along the groundwater flow direction. Metagenomic evidence indicated that denitrification served as the dominant biogeochemical process controlling nitrate attenuation in groundwater. However, the denitrification capacity experienced significant inhibition in the presence of multiple antibiotics at the ng/L level. This inhibition was attributed to decreases in the relative abundance of dominant denitrifying bacteria (Candidatus_Scalindua, Herminiimonas and unclassified_p_Planctomycetes) and denitrifying functional genes (narGH, nirKS and norB), signifying the pressure exerted by antibiotics on denitrifying bacteria. The variation in antibiotic concentration (∆Cantibiotics) indicated a change in antibiotic pressure on denitrifying bacteria. A larger ∆Cantibiotics corresponded to a greater rebound in the relative abundance of denitrifying functional genes, resulting in a faster denitrification rate (Kdenitrification). Field observations further demonstrated a positive correlation between Kdenitrification and ∆Cantibiotics. Comparatively, a higher Kdenitrification observed at higher ∆Cantibiotics was primarily due to the enrichment of more nondominant denitrifying bacteria carrying key denitrifying functional genes. In conclusion, this study underscores that multiple antibiotics at the ng/L level in groundwater inhibited denitrification, and the degree of inhibition was closely related to ∆Cantibiotics.

Cross-contamination and ecological risk assessment of antibiotics between rivers and surrounding open aquaculture ponds

Antibiotics are causing widespread concern as one of the emerging contaminants. There is the abuse of antibiotics in high-density open aquaculture, and the tailwater is often discharged into surrounding rivers. At the same time, the water replenishment of open aquaculture ponds from nearby rivers containing antibiotic contamination from different sources may result in cross-contamination. However, it is still unclear which pollution intensity is greater in rivers or in open aquaculture. So in this paper, the levels of 20 antibiotics (i.e., Fluoroquinolones (FQs), Sulfonamides (SAs), Tetracyclines (TCs), Macrolides (MLs) and Lincosamides (LCs)) in rivers and high-density open aquaculture ponds were investigated in the Baini River basin in the suburbs of Guangzhou, China. The results showed that norfloxacin (NFX) was the predominant antibiotic in river and aquaculture water, with concentrations ranging from 6.12 to 156.04 ng/L and from 7.47 to 82.62 ng/L in both aquatic systems, respectively. As for the pollution intensity of antibiotics, the annual pollution contribution (28.64 kg/a) of the river water supply to open aquaculture is higher than that (10.81 kg/a) of open aquaculture to the river, which means river pollution has a greater impact on aquaculture ponds. The risk quotient (RQ) showed that the ecological risk of lincomycin (LIN), erythromycin (ERY), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), norfloxacin (NFX), ciprofloxacin (CFX) and chlortetracycline (CTC) in rivers and aquaculture environments had high ecological risks from 1.21 to 1.81. Water interactions with contaminated rivers will result in a corresponding increase in the ecological risk of antibiotics in the aquaculture environment. Overall, according to the results, the risk of polluted rivers to open aquaculture cannot be ignored, and it is recommended that open aquaculture should use these water sources with caution, and that the water quality evaluation of aquaculture water should be increased with monitoring indicators for emerging contaminants such as antibiotics.

A database on the abundance of environmental antibiotic resistance genes

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a severe threat to global health. The wide distribution of environmental antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which can be transferred between microbiota, especially clinical pathogens and human commensals, contributed significantly to AMR. However, few databases on the spatiotemporal distribution, abundance, and health risk of ARGs from multiple environments have been developed, especially on the absolute level. In this study, we compiled the ARG occurrence data generated by a high-throughput quantitative PCR platform from 1,403 samples in 653 sampling sites across 18 provinces in China. The database possessed 291,870 records from five types of habitats on the abundance of 290 ARGs, as well as 8,057 records on the abundance of 30 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) from 2013 to 2020. These ARGs conferred resistance to major common types of antibiotics (a total of 15 types) and represented five major resistance mechanisms, as well as four risk ranks. The database can provide information for studies on the dynamics of ARGs and is useful for the health risk assessment of AMR.

Mechanism and synergistic effect of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and cadmium toxicity in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) and its alleviation through zinc fortification

Cadmium (Cd) and antibiotic's tendency to accumulate in edible plant parts and fertile land is a worldwide issue. The combined effect of antibiotics and heavy metals on crops was analyzed, but not mitigation of their toxicity. This study investigated the potential of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) to alleviate the SDZ and Cd toxicity (alone/combined) to promote spinach growth. Results revealed that the ZnO 200 mg L-1 spray decreased the malondialdehyde (MDA) 14%, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) 13%, and electrolyte leakage (EL) 7%, and increased the superoxide dismutase (SOD) 8%, peroxidase (POD) 25%, catalase (CAT) 39% and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) 12% in spinach leaves under combined SDZ+Cd (25 mg Kg-1 +50 mg Kg-1) stress compared to ZnO 100 mg L-1 spray. Likewise, ZnO NPs 200 mg L-1 spray enhanced the zinc (Zn) 97%, iron (Fe) 86%, magnesium (Mg) 35%, manganese (Mn) 8%, and potassium (K) 23% in shoots under combined SDZ+Cd (25 mg Kg-1 +50 mg Kg-1) stress compared to ZnO 100 mg L-1 spray. Further, ZnO 200 mg L-1 spray reduced Cd uptake in roots by 9% and shoots 15% under combined SDZ+Cd (25 mg Kg-1 +50 mg Kg-1) stress compared to ZnO 100 mg L-1. Overall, ZnO NPs alleviated the SDZ and Cd toxicity and enhanced spinach growth in all treatments.

Antibiotic occurrence, environmental risks, and their removal from aquatic environments using microalgae: Advances and future perspectives

Antibiotic pollution has caused a continuous increase in the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments worldwide. Algae-based bioremediation technology is a promising eco-friendly means to remove antibiotics and highly resistant ARGs, and the generated biomass can be utilized to produce value-added products of industrial significance. This review discussed the prevalence of antibiotics and ARGs in aquatic environments and their environmental risks to non-target organisms. The potential of various microalgal species for antibiotic and ARG removal, their mechanisms, strategies for enhanced removal, and future directions were reviewed. Antibiotics can be degraded into non-toxic compounds in microalgal cells through the action of extracellular polymeric substances, glutathione-S-transferase, and cytochrome P450; however, antibiotic stress can alter microalgal gene expression and growth. This review also deciphered the effect of antibiotic stress on microalgal physiology, biomass production, and biochemical composition that can impact their commercial applications.

Insights into the potential applications of permanganate/peroxymonosulfate systems: enhancement via amorphous MnO2, effects of water matrices, and optimization using response surface methodology

In this study, we developed a novel self-catalytic oxidation system involving peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and permanganate (KMnO4), named as CUPP, to efficiently mineralize sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in groundwater. It was found that amorphous MnO2 derived from the in situ reduction of KMnO4 can directly adsorb HSO5-, a complex hydroxyl group, mediate the internal disproportionation reaction of HSO5- with the manganese complex, and effectively activate PMS, thereby promoting the oxidation of SMX and its degradation intermediates through sulfonate radiation. Furthermore, by using electron spin resonance (EPR), HPLC/MS full scan, and response surface methodology, the coexistence of HO˙, SO4-˙, O2-˙, 1O2, and active chlorine (Cl2, HOCl) in the CUPP system was confirmed. A total of 24 intermediate products were detected, and four possible degradation pathways were identified for SMX. In addition, it was found that the CUPP system has a strong impact resistance to pH variations, groundwater anions, and natural organic matter stress. Undoubtedly, the CUPP system presents an innovative approach for the degradation of various emerging organic pollutants in groundwater.

Microplastics aggravate the bioaccumulation and corresponding food safety risk of antibiotics in edible bivalves by constraining detoxification-related processes

Characterized by a sessile filter-feeding lifestyle, commercial marine bivalves inhabiting pollution-prone coastal areas may accumulate significant amounts of pollutants, such as antibiotic residues, in their soft tissues and thus pose a potential threat to the health of seafood consumers. Microplastics are another type of emerging pollutant that are prevalent in coastal areas and have been reported to interact with common antibiotics such as enrofloxacin (ENR) and trimethoprim (TMP). Nevertheless, little is known about the impacts of MPs on the accumulation and corresponding food safety risk of antibiotics in edible bivalve species. Taking the frequently detected ENR, TMP, and polystyrene (PS)-MPs as representatives, the accumulation of above-mentioned antibiotics in three commercial bivalves with or without the copresence of MPs was assessed. In addition, the corresponding food safety risks of consuming antibiotic-contaminated bivalves were evaluated. Moreover, the impacts of these pollutants on detoxification-related processes were analyzed using the thick-shell mussel as a representative. Our results demonstrated that blood clams (Tegillarca granosa), thick-shell mussels (Mytilus coruscus), and Asiatic hard clams (Meretrix meretrix) accumulated significantly higher amounts of antibiotics in their bodies under antibiotic-MP coexposure scenarios. Although based on the target hazard quotients (THQs) and the margins of exposure (MoEs) obtained, the direct toxic risks of consuming ENR- or TMP-contaminated bivalves were negligible, the TMP residue accumulated in TMP-MP-coexposed mussels did surpass the maximum residue limits (MRLs) of the corresponding National Food Safety Standard of China, suggesting that other forms of potential risks should not be ignored. In addition, it was shown that the detoxification, energy provision, and antioxidant capacities of the thick-shell mussels were significantly hampered by exposure to the pollutants. In general, our data indicate that MPs may aggravate the accumulation and corresponding food safety risk of antibiotics in edible bivalves by disrupting detoxification-related processes, which deserves closer attention.

Enhanced Degradation of Levofloxacin through Visible-Light-Driven Peroxymonosulfate Activation over CuInS2/g-C3N4 Heterojunctions

In this work, the heterojunctions of CuInS2 embedded in the g-C3N4 materials (xCuInS2/g-C3N4, abbreviated as xCIS/GCN) was successfully prepared for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation under visible light. The catalysts are characterized by different techniques, such as XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, and UV-vis. The unique heterojunction composites can suppress the recombination of photogenerated pairs. The catalytic results showed that the 3CIS/GCN exhibited excellent catalytic levofloxacin (LVF) degradation efficiency, while more than 98.9% of LVF was removed in 60 min over a wide pH range. SO4•-, O2•-, OH•, and 1O2 were verified as the main reactive species for LVF degradation via the quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance technology (EPR). The synergetic effect of xCIS/GCN, PMS, and visible light irradiation was discussed. The possible LVF degradation pathway was proposed through byproducts analysis (LC-MS). Moreover, the 3CIS/GCN/vis-PMS system has very low metal leaching. Owing to xCIS/GCN having good properties for PMS activation, it has potential applications for LVF or other hazardous pollutants degradation.

Degradation of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin in urine by electrochemical oxidation with a DSA anode

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is a commonly prescribed fluoroquinolone antibiotic that, even after uptake, remains unmetabolized to a significant extent-over 70%. Unmetabolized CIP is excreted through both urine and feces. This persistent compound manages to evade removal in municipal wastewater facilities, leading to its substantial accumulation in aquatic environments. This accumulation raises concerns about potential risks to the health of various living organisms. Herein, we present a study on the remediation of CIP in synthetic urine by electrochemical oxidation in an undivided cell with a DSA (Ti/IrO2) anode and a stainless-steel cathode. Physisorbed hydroxyl radical formed at the anode surface from water discharge and free chlorine generated from Cl- oxidation were the main oxidizing agents. The effect of pH and current density (j) on CIP degradation was examined, and its total removal was easily achieved at pH ≥ 7.0 and j ≥ 60 mA cm-2 due to the action of free chlorine. The CIP decay always followed a pseudo-first-order kinetics. The components of the synthetic urine were also oxidized. The main nitrogenated species released was NH3. A very small concentration of free chlorine was quantified at the end of the treatment, thus demonstrating the good performance of electrochemical oxidation and its effectiveness to destroy all the organic pollutants. The present study demonstrates the simultaneous oxidation of the organic components of urine during CIP degradation, thus showing a unique perspective for its electrochemical oxidation that enhances the environmental remediation strategies.

Comprehensive metagenomic and enzyme activity analysis reveals the inhibitory effects and potential toxic mechanism of tetracycline on denitrification in groundwater

The widespread use of tetracycline (TC) inevitably leads to its increasing emission into groundwater. However, the potential risks of TC to denitrification in groundwater remain unclear. In this study, the effects of TC on denitrification in groundwater were systematically investigated at both the protein and gene levels from the electron behavior aspect for the first time. The results showed that increasing TC from 0 to 10 µg·L-1 decreased the nitrate removal rate from 0.41 to 0.26 mg·L-1·h-1 while enhancing the residual nitrite concentration from 0.52 mg·L-1 to 50.60 mg·L-1 at the end of the experiment. From a macroscopic view, 10 µg·L-1 TC significantly inhibited microbial growth and altered microbial community structure and function in groundwater, which induced the degeneration of denitrification. From the electron behavior aspect (the electron production, electron transport and electron consumption processes), 10 µg·L-1 TC decreased the concentration of electron donors (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, NADH), electron transport system activity, and denitrifying enzyme activities at the protein level. At the gene level, 10 µg·L-1 TC restricted the replication of genes related to carbon metabolism, the electron transport system and denitrification. Moreover, discrepant inhibitory effects of TC on individual denitrification steps, which led to the accumulation of nitrite, were observed in this study. These results provide the information that is necessary for evaluating the potential environmental risk of antibiotics on groundwater denitrification and bring more attention to their effects on geochemical nitrogen cycles.

Developing a hybrid model for predicting the reaction kinetics between chlorine and micropollutants in water

Understanding the reactivities of chlorine towards micropollutants is crucial for assessing the fate of micropollutants in water chlorination. In this study, we integrated machine learning with kinetic modeling to predict the reaction kinetics between micropollutants and chlorine in deionized water and real surface water. We first established a framework to predict the apparent second-order rate constants for micropollutants with chlorine by combining Morgan molecular fingerprints with machine learning algorithms. The framework was tuned using Bayesian optimization and showed high prediction accuracy. It was validated through experiments and used to predict the unreported apparent second-order rate constants for 103 emerging micropollutants with chlorine. The framework also improved the understanding of the structure-dependence of micropollutants' reactivity with chlorine. We incorporated the predicted apparent second-order rate constants into the Kintecus software to establish a hybrid model to profile the time-dependent changes of micropollutant concentrations by chlorination. The hybrid model was validated by experiments conducted in real surface water in the presence of natural organic matter. The hybrid model could predict how much micropollutants were degraded by chlorination with varied chlorine contact times and/or initial chlorine dosages. This study advances fundamental understanding of the reaction kinetics between chlorine and emerging micropollutants, and also offers a valuable tool to assess the fate of micropollutants during chlorination of drinking water.

Occurrence, Bioaccumulation, Metabolism and Ecotoxicity of Fluoroquinolones in the Aquatic Environment: A Review

In recent years, there has been growing concern about antibiotic contamination in water bodies, particularly the widespread presence of fluoroquinolones (FQs), which pose a serious threat to ecosystems due to their extensive use and the phenomenon of "pseudo-persistence". This article provides a comprehensive review of the literature on FQs in water bodies, summarizing and analyzing contamination levels of FQs in global surface water over the past three years, as well as the bioaccumulation and metabolism patterns of FQs in aquatic organisms, their ecological toxicity, and the influencing factors. The results show that FQs contamination is widespread in surface water across the surveyed 32 countries, with ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin being the most heavy contaminants. Furthermore, contamination levels are generally higher in developing and developed countries. It has been observed that compound types, species, and environmental factors influence the bioaccumulation, metabolism, and toxicity of FQs in aquatic organisms. FQs tend to accumulate more in organisms with higher lipid content, and toxicity experiments have shown that FQs exhibit the highest toxicity to bacteria and the weakest toxicity to mollusk. This article summarizes and analyzes the current research status and shortcomings of FQs, providing guidance and theoretical support for future research directions.

Impacts of draw solutes on the fate of tetracycline in an osmotic membrane bioreactor: Role of the combination between membrane fouling and microorganisms

Osmotic membrane bioreactors (OMBRs) are considered a suitable technology for treating wastewater containing tetracycline due to their high rejection and biodegradation efficiency. However, the impact of membrane fouling layer (i.e., chemical composition, microbial composition, and formation) on the filtration and biodegradation of tetracycline is still unclear. Herein, the effects of draw solute concentration and type on the formation of a membrane fouling layer for tetracycline filtration and its relationship with microbial activity were investigated. The results showed that over 99% of tetracycline was retained on the feed side by membrane rejection, and the fouling layer played an important role in tetracycline filtration. Specifically, membrane foulants resulted in a more hydrophilic membrane facilitating tetracycline filtration, while the tetracycline-degrading genera from the fouled membrane promoted tetracycline degradation. The structure equation model showed that tetracycline filtration dominated by electrostatic repulsion between tetracycline and the fouled membrane was more important than tetracycline degradation for tetracycline removal (path coefficient of 0.655 vs. 0.395). This study provided insights into the combined effect of membrane foulants and microorganisms on tetracycline removal.

Au nanoparticle sensitized blue TiO2 nanorod arrays for efficient Gatifloxacin photodegradation

TiO2 nanorod arrays have been widely used in photocatalytic processes, but their poor visible light absorption and rapid carrier recombination limit their application. Both introducing oxygen vacancies and using precious metals as surface plasmon resonance (SPR) stimulators are effective strategies to enhance their photocatalytic performance. Herein, Au nanoparticle sensitized blue TiO2 nanorod arrays (Au/B-TiO2) were successfully fabricated for efficient Gatifloxacin photodegradation. The degradation efficiency of Gatifloxacin was up to 95.0%. Moreover, the corresponding reaction rate constant (Ka) was up to 0.02007 min-1. Additionally, it was suggested that Gatifloxacin could be subject to three different degradation pathways. The superior catalytic activity of Au/B-TiO2 is a result of the combined effect of the two components. Firstly, TiO2 nanorod arrays provide a larger surface area for Au deposition and act as efficient transfer channels. Secondly, the presence of oxygen vacancies in blue TiO2 nanorod arrays enhances the catalytic activity. Thirdly, Au acts as a SPR activator, providing a large number of high-energy electrons in the photocatalysis process. Lastly, the improved light capture capabilities are essential for efficient removal of Gatifloxacin. This work provides a new approach for the construction of a high-performance heterojunction photocatalyst in advanced oxidation processes.

Precise isolation and structural origin of an ultra-specific nanobody against chemical compound

Highly specific antibodies are the key reagents for developing immunoassays with a low false positive rate for environmental monitoring. Here, we provide evidence that nanobodies have the potential to achieve higher specificity than conventional antibodies and explain why from their structural features. Using sulfadimethoxine (SDM) as a model analyte, we constructed an immune phage display library and precisely isolated an ultra-specific nanobody (H1-17) by a crucial homologous antigen counter selection strategy. H1-17 showed no observable cross-reactivity (CR) with other structural analogs of 41 SDM tested, which has never been achieved by conventional antibodies. The structurally original specificity of H1-17 was illuminated and compared with that of one conventional antibody by homology modeling and site-directed mutagenesis validation. It was found that the noncanonical disulfide bond (C50-C104) of H1-17 helped CDR3 form a tailor-made binding pocket and divide it into two parts to accommodate the common structure of sulfonamides and the characteristic methoxyl group of SDM, respectively. Besides, the mutual-checking hydrogen bonds also played important roles in the specific recognition. Lastly, immunoassays with zero false positive rate were developed to screen SDM in water and milk samples, indicating that nanobodies could be reliable reagents for the accurate detection of chemical compounds.

TET-Yeasate: An engineered yeast whole-cell lysate-based approach for high performance tetracycline degradation

The widespread of tetracycline (TC) residues in anthropogenic and natural environments pose an immediate threat to public health. Herein, we established the TET-Yeasate, an approach based on whole-cell lysate of engineered yeast, to mitigate the TC contamination in environment. The TET-Yeasate is defined as the biological matrix of whole cell lysate from engineered yeast that containing TC-degradative components (Tet(X), NADPH, Mg2+) and protective macromolecules. The TET-Yeasate was able to efficiently eliminate TC residues in tap water (98.8%), lake water (77.6%), livestock sewage (87.3%) and pharmaceutical wastewater (35.3%) without necessity for exogenous addition of expensive cofactors. The TET-Yeasate was further developed into lyophilized form for ease of storage and delivery. The TET-Yeasate in lyophilized form efficiently removed up to 74.6% TC residue within 0.25 h. In addition, the lyophilization confers promising resilience to TET-Yeasate against adverse temperatures and pH by maintaining degradation efficacy of 85.69%-97.83%. The stability test demonstrated that the biomacromolecules in lysate served as natural protectants that exerted extensive protection on TET-Yeasate during the 14-day storage at various conditions. In addition, 5 potential degradation pathways were elaborated based on the intermediate products. Finally, the analysis indicated that TET-Yeasate enjoyed desirable bio- and eco-safety without introduction of hazardous intermediates and spread of resistance genes. To summary, the TET-Yeasate based on whole cell lysate of engineered yeast provides a cost-effective and safe alternative to efficiently remove TC residues in environment, highlighting the great potential of such whole-cell based methods in environmental decontamination.

The response of microbial compositions and functions to chronic single and multiple antibiotic exposure by batch experiment

Understanding the response of the microbial community to external disturbances such as micropollutants is vital for ecological risk evaluation. In this study, the effect of chronic antibiotic exposure on community compositions and functions was investigated by two batch experiments. The first experiment investigated the effect of chronic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) exposure, while the second investigated the combined effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) sources and multi-antibiotic exposure. The results showed that the community responses to chronic antibiotic exposure depended on the dynamic balance among community resistance, adaptation, recovery, and selection, leading to nonlinear composition diversity variations. The disturbance strength of chronic SMX exposure increased with concentration (0.5-50 μg/L). However, complex sources and structures of coexisting organic matter might delay the disturbance by elevating metabolic activity and generating functional redundancy. Especially, when nutrient was a limiting factor, the disturbance strength by DOM source was greater than that by chronic antibiotic exposure. The resistance of abundant taxa to external distributions resulted in a low explanation of community diversity, while rare taxa played key roles in response to community variation and thereby affected community assembly. Long-term SMX exposure reduced the number of key species and favored the deterministic assembly process by 21%. However, elevated community adaptability might weaken the influence of antibiotic selection. Chronic SMX exposure elevated the relative abundance of sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1, sul2) by a factor of 1.2-4.3, while that of nitrogen-fixing genes (nifH, nifK) and the metabolic pathways related to the toluene, ethylbenzene, and dioxin degradation decreased. However, the combined influence of DOM sources and multi-antibiotic exposure barely caused the difference in the genes linking to element metabolism and drug resistance of microbial communities between blank and exposed groups. This study suggested that more concern should be given to the chronic environmental effect of organic micropollutants.

Peroxymonocarbonate activation via Co nanoparticles confined in metal-organic frameworks for efficient antibiotic degradation in different actual water matrices

Traditional advanced oxidation processes suffer from low availability of ultrashort lifetime radicals and declining stability of catalysts. Co nanoparticles in hollow bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (Co@MOFs) were synthesized via a solvothermal method. Nanoconfinement and peroxymonocarbonate (PMC) degradation system endows Co@MOFs with high catalytic activity and stability even in the actual water matrices. The nanocomposites exhibited 100-200 nm polyhedron structure with irregular nanocavity between the 20 nm shell and multicores. Co nanoparticles were completely encapsulated by the FeIII-MOF-5 shell according to the X-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectra. Both 0.8 nm micropores and 3.6 nm mesopores were proven to be present. The yolk-shell Co@MOFs exhibited higher catalytic performance than that of Co nanoparticles, hollow FeIII-MOF-5 and its core-shell counterpart toward PMC activation during sulfamethoxazole degradation. The catalytic activities of Co@MOFs for the activation of unsymmetrical peroxides (PMC and peroxymonosulfate) were much higher than those for the symmetrical peroxides (H2O2 and persulfate) and the heterogeneous catalysis was dominant in the Co@MOFs activated H2O2 and PMC systems. The MOF stability was the highest and metal leakages were the least in the activated PMC system among the four peroxides because of mild reaction conditions and the alkalescent solution (pH = 8.3-8.4). Furthermore, the high removal efficiencies (>94%) and degradation rates could be maintained in the different actual water matrices due to the confinement effects. The contributions of carbonate and hydroxyl radicals were primary for sulfamethoxazole degradation, and superoxide anion and singlet oxygen also played essential roles according to scavenging experiments and time-series spin-trapping electron spin resonance spectra. Six degradation pathways were proposed according to 26 intermediate identification and the pharmacophores of more than 80% intermediates were destroyed, which would benefit subsequent biological treatment. Successful combination of nanoconfinement and PMC might provide a new effective solution for pollution remediation.

Efficient degradation of norfloxacin using a novel biochar-supported CuO/Fe3O4 combined with peroxydisulfate: Insights into enhanced contribution of nonradical pathway

Nonradical persulfate oxidation techniques have evolved as a new contaminated water treatment approach due to its great tolerance to water matrixes. The catalysts of CuO-based composites have received much attention in that aside from SO₄^•-/^•OH radicals, the nonradicals of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) can be also generated during persulfate activation via CuO. However, the issues regarding particles aggregation and metal leaching from the catalysts during the decontamination process remain to be addressed, which could have a remarkable impact on the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Accordingly in the present study, a novel biochar-supported bimetallic Fe₃O₄-CuO catalyst (CuFeBC) was facilely developed to activate peroxodisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) in aqueous solution. The results showed CuFeBC has a superior stability against metal ions Cu/Fe leaching, and NOR (30 mg L^-1) was degraded at 94.5% within 180 min in the presence of CuFeBC (0.5 g L^-1) and PDS (6 mM) in pH 8.5. The scavenging of reactive oxygen species and electron spin resonance analysis revealed that ¹O₂ dominated the degradation of NOR. Compared with pristine CuO-Fe₃O₄, the interaction between biochar substrate and metal particles could significantly enhance the contribution of the nonradical pathway to NOR degradation from 49.6% to 84.7%. Biochar substrate could efficiently reduce the leaching of metal species from the catalyst, thereby maintaining excellent catalytic activity and lasting reusability of the catalyst. These findings could enlighten new insights into fine-tuning radical/nonradical processes from CuO-based catalysts for the efficient remediation of organic contaminants in polluted water.
