Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in Australia's largest inland sewage treatment plant, and its contribution to a major Australian river during high and low flow

Bioconcentration of pharmaceuticals by aquatic flora in an Australian river system

Pharmaceuticals are emerging contaminants in the environment and are a ubiquitous presence in rivers downstream of wastewater treatment plant outfalls. Questions remain about the persistence of pharmaceuticals in rivers, and the uptake and bioconcentration of pharmaceuticals by aquatic plants. Our study took place in the Yarrowee/Leigh/Barwon River system in southeastern Australia. We quantified the concentrations of five pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine, primidone, propranolol, tramadol, and venlafaxine) in surface water at five sites along a 144-km stretch of river, downstream of the presumed primary point source (a wastewater treatment plant outfall). We quantified pharmaceuticals in the leaves of two aquatic plant species (Phragmites australis and Vallisneria australis) sampled at each site, and calculated bioconcentration factors. All five pharmaceuticals were detected in surface waters, and the highest detected concentration exceeded 500 ng.L-1 (tramadol). Four of the pharmaceuticals (all except tramadol) were detected and quantified at all sites, including the furthest site from the outfall (144 km). Carbamazepine showed less attenuation with distance from the outfall than the other pharmaceuticals. Carbamazepine and venlafaxine were quantified in the leaves of both aquatic plant species (range: 10-31 ng.g-1), and there was evidence that bioconcentration factors increased with decreasing surface water concentrations. The study demonstrates the potential long-distance persistence of pharmaceuticals in river systems, and the bioconcentration of pharmaceuticals by aquatic plants in natural ecosystems. These phenomena deserve greater attention as aquatic plants are a potential point of transfer of pharmaceuticals from aquatic ecosystems to terrestrial food webs.

Pharmaceuticals in biota: the impact of wastewater treatment plant effluents on fish in Australia

Globally, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are detected in surface waters receiving wastewater, yet their presence in biota, remain largely understudied. To address this, we conducted a study that measured 46 PPCPs in spot water samples and fish caught up- and downstream from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Victoria, Australia. We sampled 15 sites located along four waterways following a 3-site design: WWTP-discharge('hotspot'), 'upstream'(∼2km) and 'downstream'(∼2km). Spot water and fish were also sampled at reference sites >100km from WWTP discharge (n=3). Additionally, spot water samples were taken from WWTP effluent outflows (n=3). From each locality, we analysed 3-12 fish (n=131 total). In waterways, passive samplers (POCIS;∼28d, n=19 PPCPs) were also deployed. Individual fish (axial muscle) and water were analysed with LC-MS-MS. We found that PPCP concentrations in environmental surface water ranged from<0.02-0.97μg/L. In WWTP effluent, the range was <0.02-1.4μg/L. Of the 46 PPCPs analysed, 12 were detected in spot water samples and five in fish. In water, the highest concentration detected was for antidepressant venlafaxine (3μg/L). The most frequently detected PPCPs: venlafaxine (54.9%), metoprolol (41.2%), propranolol (29.4%), carbamazepine (29.4%), caffeine (17.6%) and sulfamethoxazole (17.6%). Out of 131 fish analysed, 35 fish had detectable levels of PPCPs in the muscle tissue. The highest muscle concentrations were: venlafaxine (150μg/kg, redfin perch), and sertraline (100μg/kg, eel). Bioaccumulation factors ranged from 104-341L/kg for venlafaxine in redfins, 21-1,260L/kg for carbamazepine in redfins and eels, and 367-3,333L/kg for sertraline in eels. Based on our human health risk calculations for venlafaxine, carbamazepine, sertraline, triclosan, and caffeine, consumption of fish does not pose a significant risk to human health. Despite this, most of the detected PPCPs in surface waters exceeded 10ng/L trigger value, which has led to further investigations by EPA. Our study highlights the need for using multiple lines of evidence for estimating risks of PPCPs.

Removal of pharmaceutical compounds and toxicology study in wastewater using Malaysian fungal Ganoderma lucidum

Elevated usage of pharmaceutical products leads to the accumulation of emerging contaminants in sewage. In the current work, Ganoderma lucidum (GL) was used to remove pharmaceutical compounds (PCs), proposed as a tertiary method in sewage treatment plants (STPs). The PCs consisted of a group of painkillers (ketoprofen, diclofenac, and dexamethasone), psychiatrists (carbamazepine, venlafaxine, and citalopram), beta-blockers (atenolol, metoprolol, and propranolol), and anti-hypertensives (losartan and valsartan). The performance of 800 mL of synthetic water, effluent STP, and hospital wastewater (HWW) was evaluated. Parameters, including treatment time, inoculum volume, and mechanical agitation speed, have been tested. The toxicity of the GL after treatment is being studied based on exposure levels to zebrafish embryos (ZFET) and the morphology of the GL has been observed via Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The findings conclude that GL can reduce PCs from <10% to >90%. Diclofenac and valsartan are the highest (>90%) in the synthetic model, while citalopram and propranolol (>80%) are in the real wastewater. GL effectively removed pollutants in 48 h, 1% of the inoculum volume, and 50 rpm. The ZFET showed GL is non-toxic (LC50 is 209.95 mg/mL). In the morphology observation, pellets GL do not show major differences after treatment, showing potential to be used for a longer treatment time and to be re-useable in the system. GL offers advantages to removing PCs in water due to their non-specific extracellular enzymes that allow for the biodegradation of PCs and indicates a good potential in real-world applications as a favourable alternative treatment.

Fate of contaminants of emerging concern in two wastewater treatment plants after retrofitting tertiary treatment for reduction of nitrogen discharge

More and more previously designed wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are upgraded to tertiary treatment to meet the higher effluent discharge standards of conventional pollutants. Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) can cause adverse effects on organisms and usually flow into WWTPs along with urban sewage. How the retrofitted WWTPs targeting conventional pollutants will influence the treatment efficiency of CECs is seldom discussed. This study investigates the removal of CECs in two full-scale newly retrofitted WWTPs (CD and JM WWTPs), containing high-efficiency sedimentation tank and denitrification deep bed filter for enhancing total nitrogen removal. The overall CEC removal efficiencies in the CD and JM WWTPs were 73.79 % and 93.63 %, respectively. Mass balance results indicated that CD WWTP and JM WWTP release a total of 36.89 and 88.58 g/d of CECs into the environment through effluent and excess sludge, respectively. Analysis of the concentration of CECs along the treatment process revealed most CECs were removed in the biological treatment units. The incorporation of newly constructed tertiary treatment proved beneficial for CEC removal and removed 2.93 % and 2.36 % CECs, corresponding to CEC removal of 2.92 and 27.49 g/d in the CD and JM WWTPs, respectively. The data of this study were further used to evaluate the suitability of the SimpleTreat model for simulating the fate of CECs in WWTPs. The predicted fraction of CECs discharged through the biological treatment effluent were generally within ten-fold difference from the measured results, highlighting its potential for estimating CEC removal in WWTPs.

The effect of warming and seasonality on bioaccumulation of selected pharmaceuticals in freshwater invertebrates

Multiple human-induced environmental stressors significantly threaten global biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Climate warming and chemical pollution are two widespread stressors whose impact on freshwaters is likely to increase. However, little is known about the combined effects of warming on the bioaccumulation of environmentally relevant mixtures of emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in freshwater biota. This study investigated the bioaccumulation of a mixture of 15 selected PhACs at environmentally relevant concentrations in common freshwater macroinvertebrate taxa, exposed to ambient temperatures and warming (+4 °C) during the warm and cold seasons in two outdoor mesocosm experiments. Nine PhACs (carbamazepine, cetirizine, clarithromycin, clindamycin, fexofenadine, telmisartan, trimethoprim, valsartan and venlafaxine) were dissipated faster in the warm season experiment than in the cold season experiment, while lamotrigine showed the opposite trend. The most bioaccumulated PhACs in macroinvertebrates were tramadol, carbamazepine, telmisartan, venlafaxine, citalopram and cetirizine. The bioaccumulation was taxon, season and temperature dependent, but differences could not be fully explained by the different water stability of the PhACs and their partitioning between water and leaf litter. The highest water-based bioaccumulation factors were found in Asellus and Planorbarius. Moreover, the bioaccumulation of some PhACs increased with warming in Planorbarius, suggesting that it could be used as a sentinel taxon in environmental studies of the effects of climate warming on PhAC bioaccumulation.

Spatio-Temporal Variation in the Exceedance of Enterococci in Lake Burley Griffin: An Analysis of 16 Years' Recreational Water Quality Monitoring Data

Recreational waterbodies with high levels of faecal indicator bacteria (FIB) pose health risks and are an ongoing challenge for urban-lake managers. Lake Burley Griffin (LBG) in the Australian Capital city of Canberra is a popular site for water-based recreation, but analyses of seasonal and long-term patterns in enterococci that exceed alert levels (>200 CFU per 100 mL, leading to site closures) are lacking. This study analysed enterococci concentrations from seven recreational sites from 2001-2021 to examine spatial and temporal patterns in exceedances during the swimming season (October-April), when exposure is highest. The enterococci concentrations varied significantly across sites and in the summer months. The frequency of the exceedances was higher in the 2009-2015 period than in the 2001-2005 and 2015-2021 periods. The odds of alert-level concentrations were greater in November, December, and February compared to October. The odds of exceedance were higher at the Weston Park East site (swimming beach) and lower at the Ferry Terminal and Weston Park West site compared to the East Basin site. This preliminary examination highlights the need for site-specific assessments of environmental and management-related factors that may impact the public health risks of using the lake, such as inflows, turbidity, and climatic conditions. The insights from this study confirm the need for targeted monitoring efforts during high-risk months and at specific sites. The study also advocates for implementing measures to minimise faecal pollution at its sources.

Impact of hydrological drought occurrence, duration, and severity on Murray-Darling basin water quality

The severity and frequency of droughts are projected to increase globally due to climate change, but the effects of this on water quality are uncertain. The Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) is the largest river system in Australia and has been impacted by droughts of varying severity within recent decades. In this study, we assessed the influence of hydrological droughts and their characteristics (severity and duration) on water quality, utilising a long-term (1980-2017) dataset from two monitoring sites. The main drought periods, and their duration and severity, were identified using the calculated Standardised Drought Index values (SDI) from averaged monthly streamflow data. While several hydrological drought periods were identified, the longest duration and greatest severity were during the Millennium Drought (1998-2010). Nutrient loads and concentrations of Total Nitrogen and Total Phosphorus of drought and post-drought periods were significantly different. The drought period showed the lowest median and interquartile range of nutrient (total nitrogen, TN; oxidised nitrogen, NOX; total phosphorus, TP; and soluble reactive phosphorus, SRP) concentrations and loads for both sites, whereas the highest nutrient loads and concentrations were reported during the post-drought period (approx. 1 × 103 to 1 × 105 kg day-1 increase in nutrient loads). Our analysis found significant relationships between nutrient loads and SDI during droughts. The load of N and P in the initial flush post-drought increased with drought at both sites. This suggests that nutrients were retained in the landscape during the drought and released in higher loads post-drought when the catchment became wetter, the hydrology was activated, and nutrients were mobilised. Hydrology is a key driver controlling the water quality within the inter-drought period and the peak nutrient loads post-drought. The duration and the severity of droughts had a significant (p = 0.01) influence on peak TN and TP monthly loads but not cumulative loads over a 12-month period. Hydrological droughts are important factors in controlling the water quality of the MDB. Therefore, management efforts should be focused on reducing the occurrence and duration of these events, along with the implementation of catchment nutrient control measures.

Micropollutant rejection by nanofiltration membranes: A mini review dedicated to the critical factors and modelling prediction

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes, extensively used in advanced wastewater treatment, have broad application prospects for the removal of emerging trace organic micropollutants (MPs). The treatment performance is affected by several factors, such as the properties of NF membranes, characteristics of target MPs, and operating conditions of the NF system concerning MP rejection. However, quantitative studies on different contributors in this context are limited. To fill the knowledge gap, this study aims to assess critical impact factors controlling MP rejection and develop a feasible model for MP removal prediction. The mini-review firstly summarized membrane pore size, membrane zeta potential, and the normalized molecular size (λ = rs/rp), showeing better individual relationships with MP rejection by NF membranes. The Lindeman-Merenda-Gold model was used to quantitatively assess the relative importance of all summarized impact factors. The results showed that membrane pore size and operating pressure were the high impact factors with the highest relative contribution rates to MP rejection of 32.11% and 25.57%, respectively. Moderate impact factors included membrane zeta potential, solution pH, and molecular radius with relative contribution rates of 10.15%, 8.17%, and 7.83%, respectively. The remaining low impact factors, including MP charge, molecular weight, logKow, pKa and crossflow rate, comprised all the remaining contribution rates of 16.19% through the model calculation. Furthermore, based on the results and data availabilities from references, the machine learning-based random forest regression model was trained with a relatively low root mean squared error and mean absolute error of 12.22% and 6.92%, respectively. The developed model was then successfully applied to predict MPs' rejections by NF membranes. These findings provide valuable insights that can be applied in the future to optimize NF membrane designs, operation, and prediction in terms of removing micropollutants.

Mechanistic investigation of the electricity and gallic acid synergistically accelerated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle for the degradation of carbamazepine

This study investigated the application of a natural plant polyphenol, gallic acid (GA) to form complex with iron to promote the redox cycle of Fe(III)/Fe(II) under neutral initial pH conditions in the electrochemical (EC) system for activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to efficiently degrade carbamazepine (CBZ). Results demonstrated that the synergistic effects of GA and EC significantly improved the removal efficiency, and the EC/GA/Fe(III)/PMS system effectively removed 100% of CBZ within a wide initial pH range of 3.0-7.0. The optimum stoichiometric ratio of GA to Fe(III) was found as 2:1. Investigations including quenching experiment, chemical probe analysis, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were conducted to identify the primary reaction radicals as •OH, SO4•-, along with the 1O2 and Fe(IV). In the EC/GA/Fe(III)/PMS system, the synergistic effect of GA and electrochemistry led to a remarkable enhancement in the generation of •OH. Furthermore, the complexation reduction mechanism of GA and Fe(III) was proposed based on experimental and instrumental analyses, which demonstrated that the semi-quinone products of GA were the main substances promoting the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle. Mass spectrometry results showed that CBZ generated 27 byproducts during degradation, with formic acid as the main product of GA. The degradation efficiency of the EC/GA/Fe(III)/PMS system remained stable and excellent, exhibiting remarkable performance in the presence of various inorganic anions, including Cl- and NO3-, as well as naturally occurring organic compounds such as fulvic acid (FA). Overall results indicated that the EC/GA/Fe(III)/PMS system can be applied to effectively treat practical wastewater treatment without requirement of pH adjustment.

Hydroxylated transformation products of pharmaceutical active compounds: Generation from processes used in wastewater treatment plants and its environmental monitoring

Pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) are organic pollutants detected in wastewater and aquatic environments worldwide in concentrations ranging from ng L-1 to μg L-1. Wastewater effluents containing PhACs residues is discharged in municipal sewage and, subsequently collected in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) where are not entirely removed. Thus, PhACs and its transformation products (TPs) are discharged into water bodies. In the current work, the transformation of PhACs under treatments used in municipal WWTPs such as biological, photolysis, chlorination, and ozonation processes was reviewed. Data set of the major transformation pathways were obtained of studies that performed the PhACs removal and TPs monitoring during batch-scale experiments using gas and liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC/LC-MS/MS). Several transformation pathways as dealkylation, hydroxylation, oxidation, acetylation, aromatic ring opening, chlorination, dehalogenation, photo-substitution, and ozone attack reactions were identified during the transformation of PhACs. Especially, hydroxylation reaction was identified as transformation pathway in all the processes. During the elucidation of hydroxylated TPs several isobaric compounds as monohydroxylated and dihydroxylated were identified. However, hydroxylated TPs monitoring in wastewater and aquatic environments is a topic scarcely studied due to that has no environmental significance, lack of available analytic standars of hydroxylated TPs and lack of analytic methods for their identification. Thus, screening strategy for environmental monitoring of hydroxylated TPs was proposed through target and suspect screening using GC/LC-MS/MS systems. In the next years, more studies on the hydroxylated TPs monitoring are necessary for its detection in WWTPs effluents as well as studies on their environmental effects in aquatic environments.

Graphene Oxide, Carbon Nanotubes, and Polyelectrolytes-Based Impedanciometric E-Tongue for Estrogen Detection in Complex Matrices

Currently, it is necessary to maintain the quality of aquifers and water bodies, which means the need for sensors that detect molecules as emerging pollutants (EPs) at low concentrations in aqueous complex solutions. In this work, an electronic tongue (e-tongue) prototype was developed to detect 17β-estradiol in tap water. To achieve such a prototype, an array of sensors was prepared. Each sensor consists of a solid support with interdigitated electrodes without or with thin films prepared with graphene oxide, nanotubes, and other polyelectrolytes molecules adsorbed on them. To collect data from each sensor, impedance spectroscopy was used to analyze the electrical characteristics of samples of estrogen solutions with different concentrations. To analyze the collected data from the sensors, principal components analysis (PCA) method was used to create a three-dimensional plane using the calculated principal components, namely PC1 and PC2, and the estrogen concentration values. Then, damped least squares (DLS) was used to find the optimal values for the hyperplane calibration, as the sensitivity of this e-tongue was not represented by a straight line but by a surface. For the collected data, from nanotubes and graphene oxide sensors, a calibration curve for concentration given by the 10PC1×0.492-PC2×0.14-14.5 surface was achieved. This e-tongue presented a detection limit of 10-16 M of 17β-estradiol in tap water.

ASPAD dynamic simulation and artificial neural network for atenolol adsorption in GGSWAC packed bed column

This study aimed to assess the dynamic simulation models provided by Aspen adsorption (ASPAD) and artificial neural network (ANN) in understanding the adsorption behavior of atenolol (ATN) on gasified Glyricidia sepium woodchips activated carbon (GGSWAC) within fixed bed columns for wastewater treatment. The findings demonstrated that increasing the bed height from 1 to 3 cm extended breakthrough and exhaustion times while enhancing adsorption capacity. Conversely, higher initial ATN concentrations resulted in shorter breakthrough and exhaustion times but increased adsorption capacity. Elevated influent flow rates reduced breakthrough and exhaustion times while maintaining constant adsorption capacity. The ASPAD software demonstrated competence in accurately modeling the crucial exhaustion points. However, there is room for enhancement in forecasting breakthrough times, as it exhibited deviations ranging from 6.52 to 239.53% when compared to the actual experimental data. ANN models in both MATLAB and Python demonstrated precise predictive abilities, with the Python model (R2 = 0.985) outperforming the MATLAB model (R2 = 0.9691). The Python ANN also exhibited superior fitting performance with lower MSE and MAE. The most influential factor was the initial ATN concentration (28.96%), followed by bed height (26.39%), influent flow rate (22.43%), and total effluent time (22.22%). The findings of this study offer an extensive comprehension of breakthrough patterns and enable accurate forecasts of column performance.

Chlorphenamine adsorption on commercial activated carbons: Effect of Operating Conditions and Surface Chemistry

Chlorphenamine (CPA) adsorption onto three activated carbons (ACs), namely, Megapol M (MM), Micro 10 (M10), and GAMA B (GB), was studied in this work. The textural properties, concentrations of active sites, surface charge and point of zero charge of the ACs were assessed. The surface areas (SBET) of MM, GB and M10 were 1107, 812 and 766 m2/g, respectively. The MM surface had an acidic character, while the surfaces of M10 and GB were basic. The adsorption capacity of MM, M10, and GB towards CPA was studied at pH 7 and 11, and the adsorption capacity decreased in the order MM > M10 ≈ GB, which was ascribed to the magnitude of SBET and the concentration of acidic sites. The solution pH significantly increased the adsorption capacity of MM towards CPA by raising the solution pH from 5 to 9, and this behavior was attributed to the electrostatic attraction between the negatively charged surface of MM and the cationic species of CPA. The maximum uptake of CPA adsorbed on MM was 574.6 mg/g at pH = 11 and T = 25 °C. The adsorption capacity of MM was slightly raised by incrementing the temperature. Lastly, the zeta potential measurements of pristine MM and MM saturated with CPA confirmed that the electrostatic attraction predominated in the pH range of 5-9, and the π-π stacking interactions were the principal mechanism of CPA adsorption on MM at pH 11.

Occurrence and removal rate of typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in an urban wastewater treatment plant in Beijing, China

The occurrence and removal rate of 52 typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) were investigated in a wastewater treatment plant in Beijing, China. Thirty-three PPCPs were found in the influent, with caffeine (CF, 11387.0 ng L-1) being the most abundant, followed by N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET, 9568.4 ng L-1), metoprolol (MTP, 930.2 ng L-1), and diclofenac (DF, 710.3 ng L-1). After treatment processes, the cumulative concentration of PPCPs decreased from 2.54 × 104 ng L-1 to 1.44 × 103 ng L-1, with the overall removal efficiency (RE) of 94.3%. Different treatment processes showed varying contributions in removing PPCPs. PPCPs were efficiently removed in sedimentation, anoxic, and ultraviolet units. For individual compounds, a great variation in RE (52.1-100%) was observed. Twenty-two PPCPs were removed by more than 90%. The highly detected PPCPs in the influent were almost completely removed. Aerated grit chamber removed nearly 50% of fluoroquinolone (FQs) and more than 60% of sulfonamides. Most PPCPs showed low or negative removals during anaerobic treatment, except for CF which was eliminated by 64.9%. Anoxic treatment demonstrated positive removals for most PPCPs, with the exceptions of DF, MTP, bisoprolol, carbamazepine (CBZ), and sibutramine. DEET and bezafibrate were efficiently removed during the secondary sedimentation. Denitrification biological filter and membrane filtration also showed positive effect on most PPCPs removals. The remaining compounds were oxidized by 16-100% in ozonation. DF, sulpiride, ofloxacin (OFL), trimethoprim, and phenolphthalein were not amenable to ultraviolet. After the treatment, the residue OFL, CBZ, and CF in receiving water were identified to pose high risk to aquatic organisms. Considering the complex mixtures emitted into the environment, therapeutic groups psychotropics, stimulant, and FQs were classified as high risk. These findings provide valuable insights into adopting appropriate measures for more efficient PPCPs removals, and emphasize the importance of continued monitoring specific PPCPs and mixtures thereof to safeguard the ecosystem.

The Influences of Pore Blockage by Natural Organic Matter and Pore Dimension Tuning on Pharmaceutical Adsorption onto GO-Fe3O4

The ubiquitous presence of pharmaceutical pollution in the environment and its adverse impacts on public health and aquatic ecosystems have recently attracted increasing attention. Graphene oxide coated with magnetite (GO-Fe₃O₄) is effective at removing pharmaceuticals in water by adsorption. However, the myriad compositions in real water are known to adversely impact the adsorption performance. One objective of this study was to investigate the influence of pore blockage by natural organic matter (NOM) with different sizes on pharmaceutical adsorption onto GO-Fe₃O₄. Meanwhile, the feasibility of pore dimension tuning of GO-Fe₃O₄ for selective adsorption of pharmaceuticals with different structural characteristics was explored. It was shown in the batch experiments that the adsorbed pharmaceutical concentrations onto GO-Fe₃O₄ were significantly affected (dropped by 2-86%) by NOM that had size ranges similar to the pore dimensions of GO-Fe₃O₄, as the impact was enhanced when the adsorption occurred at acidic pHs (e.g., pH 3). Specific surface areas, zeta potentials, pore volumes, and pore-size distributions of GO-Fe₃O₄ were influenced by the Fe content forming different-sized Fe₃O₄ between GO layers. Low Fe contents in GO-Fe₃O₄ increased the formation of nano-sized pores (2.0-12.5 nm) that were efficient in the adsorption of pharmaceuticals with low molecular weights (e.g., 129 kDa) or planar structures via size discrimination or inter-planar π-π interaction, respectively. As excess larger-sized pores (e.g., >50 nm) were formed on the surface of GO-Fe₃O₄ due to higher Fe contents, pharmaceuticals with larger molecular weights (e.g., 296 kDa) or those removed by electrostatic attraction between the adsorbate and adsorbent dominated on the GO-Fe₃O₄ surface. Given these observations, the surface characteristics of GO-Fe₃O₄ were alterable to selectively remove different pharmaceuticals in water by adsorption, and the critical factors determining the adsorption performance were discussed. These findings provide useful views on the feasibility of treating pharmaceutical wastewater, recycling valuable pharmaceuticals, or removing those with risks to public health and ecosystems.

Emerging challenges of the impacts of pharmaceuticals on aquatic ecosystems: A diatom perspective

Pharmaceuticals are a ubiquitous group of emerging pollutants of considerable importance due to their biological potency and potential to elicit effects in wildlife and humans. Pharmaceuticals have been quantified in terrestrial, marine, fresh, and transitional waters, as well as the fauna and macro-flora that inhabit them. Pharmaceuticals can enter water ways through different human and veterinary pathways with traditional wastewater treatment, unable to completely remove pharmaceuticals, discharging often unknown quantities to aquatic ecosystems. However, there is a paucity of available information regarding the effects of pharmaceuticals on species at the base of aquatic food webs, especially on phytoplankton, with research typically focussing on fish and aquatic invertebrates. Diatoms are one of the main classes of phytoplankton and are some of the most abundant and important organisms in aquatic systems. As primary producers, diatoms generate ∼40 % of the world's oxygen and are a vital food source for primary consumers. Diatoms can also be used for bioremediation of polluted water bodies but perhaps are best known as bio-indicators for water quality studies. However, this keystone, non-target group is often ignored during ecotoxicological studies to assess the effects of pollutants of concern. Observed effects of pharmaceuticals on diatoms have the potential to be used as an indicator of pharmaceutical-induced impacts on higher trophic level organisms and wider ecosystem effects. The aim of this review is to present a synthesis of research on pharmaceutical exposure to diatoms, considering ecotoxicity, bioremediation and the role of diatoms as bio-indicators. We highlight significant omissions and knowledge gaps which need addressing to realise the potential role of diatoms in future risk assessment approaches and help evaluate the impacts of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment at local and global scales.

The effect of metformin and drinking water quality variation on haloacetamide formation during chlor(am)ination of acetaminophen

Acetaminophen (Apap) is widely used and is known to form toxic haloacetamides (HAcAms) during chlorination. Metformin (Met) is a typical medication with usage much higher than that of Apap and its ubiquitous presence in the environment is known. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Met which contains multiple amino groups potentially joining reactions and different chlorination methods on HAcAm formation from Apap. In addition, a major drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) using the largest river in southern Taiwan was sampled to study the influence of Apap in a DWTP on the HAcAm formation. Results showed increasing dichloroacetamide (DCAcAm) molar yields of Apap at a Cl/Apap molar ratio of 5 during chlorination (0.15%) and two-step chlorination (0.03%). HAcAms were formed by the chlorine substitution of hydrogen on the methyl group in Apap followed by the cleavage of the bonding between nitrogen and aromatic. While a high Cl/Apap ratio during chlorination led to reactions between chlorine and HAcAms formed decreasing the HAcAm yields, the two-step chlorination further reduced the HAcAm formation during chlorination by a factor of 1.8-8.2. However, Met which limitedly formed HAcAms increased the DCAcAm yields of Apap by 228% at high chlorine dosages during chlorination and by 244% during two-step chlorination. In the DWTP, trichloroacetamide (TCAcAm) formation was important. The formation was positively correlated with NH₄⁺, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA). DCAcAm dominated in the presence of Apap. The DCAcAm molar yields were 0.17%-0.27% and 0.08%-0.21% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. The HAcAm yields of Apap in the DWTP were limitedly changed between different locations and seasons. Apap could be one important cause for HAcAm formation in a DWTP, as the presence of other pharmaceuticals such as Met possibly worsens the situation in chlorine applications.

PPCP degradation by ammonia/chlorine: Efficiency, radical species, and byproducts formation

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are frequently detected in water bodies and have potential risks to human health and the ecosystem. The degradation of eight structurally diverse PPCPs by ammonia/chlorine was systematically investigated in this study. Compared with chlorination, ammonia/chlorine markedly enhanced PPCP degradation, and the degradation efficiencies of most PPCPs were greater than 70%. Tert-butanol strongly suppressed PPCP degradation, while bicarbonate suppressed it moderately, suggesting the importance of ClO⋅and ⋅CO₃^- in PPCP degradation. In neutral conditions, PPCP degradation was mainly attributed to ⋅OH, with its contribution ranging from 74% to 100% at a Cl₂/N molar ratio of 1.6. Regarding the effect of natural organic matter, atrazine and primidone were inhibited the most, while carbamazepine (CBZ), metoprolol (MTP), and atenolol (ATN) were affected the least. PPCP degradation was suppressed in reclaimed water; the degradation of CBZ, MTP, and ATN was suppressed the least, with degradation efficiencies of 77.1%-85.4%, 75.1%-77.1%, and 64.6%-68.8%, respectively. Furthermore, compared with chlorination, fewer volatile halogenated byproducts were formed in reclaimed water when using the ammonia/chlorine process, and the concentration of each byproduct formed by ammonia/chlorine was less than 10 µg/L. This study suggests the feasibility of using ammonia/chlorine oxidation to degrade PPCPs in reclaimed water.

Fish liver damage related to the wastewater treatment plant effluents

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) continuously release a complex mixture of municipal, hospital, industrial, and runoff chemicals into the aquatic environment. These contaminants are both legacy contaminants and emerging-concern contaminants, affecting all tissues in a fish body, particularly the liver. The fish liver is the principal detoxifying organ and effects of consistent pollutant exposure can be evident on its cellular and tissue level. The objective of this paper is thus to provide an in-depth analysis of the WWTP contaminants' impact on the fish liver structure, physiology, and metabolism. The paper also gives an overview of the fish liver biotransformation enzymes, antioxidant enzymes, and non-enzymatic antioxidants, their role in metabolizing xenobiotic compounds and coping with oxidative damage. Emphasis has been placed on highlighting the vulnerability of fish to xenobiotic compounds, and on biomonitoring of exposed fish, generally involving observation of biomarkers in caged or native fish. Furthermore, the paper systematically assesses the most common contaminants with the potential to affect fish liver tissue.

Applications of biochar in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes for the removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products

Recently, biochar (BC) has been increasingly used as a catalyst for the degradation of 'emerging pollutants' (EPs). Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), which come under 'EPs', can be harmful to the aquatic ecosystem despite being present in very low concentrations (ng/L-μg/L). Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), which produce sulfate radical (SR-AOPs), show a great potential to degrade PPCPs effectively from wastewater. It is mainly due to the higher stability, long half-lives and better non-selectivity of SO₄^{• -} compared with AOPs with •OH generation. Furthermore, research focus is now given on AOPs coupled with BC-supported catalyst to enhance the degradation of PPCPs because of quicker generation of radicals (•OH, SO₄^•-) by the activation of persulfate (PS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS). This article sheds light on the catalytic ability of BC after its physical and chemical modifications such as acid/alkali treatment and metal doping. The role of persistent free radicals (PFRs) in the BC for effective removal of PPCPs has been elaborated. Its potential applications in synthetic as well as real wastewater have also been discussed.

Appraising efficacy of existing and advanced technologies for the remediation of beta-blockers from wastewater: A review

The discharge of emerging pollutants, such as beta-blockers (BB), has been recognized as one of the major threats to the environment due to the ecotoxicity associated with these emerging pollutants. The BB are prescribed to treat high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases; however, even at lower concentration, these pollutants can pose eco-toxic impacts towards aquatic organisms. Additionally, owing to their recalcitrant nature, BB are not effectively removed through conventional technologies, such as activated sludge process, trickling filter and moving bed bioreactor; thus, it is essential to understand the degradation mechanism of BB in established as well as embryonic technologies, like adsorption, electro-oxidation, Fenton process, ultraviolet-based advance oxidation process, ozonation, membrane systems, wetlands and algal treatment. In this regard, this review articulates the recalcitrant nature of BB and their associated removal technologies. Moreover, the major advantages and limitations of these BB removal technologies along with the recent advancements with regard to the application of innovative materials and strategies have also been elucidated. Therefore, the present review intends to aid the researchers in improving the BB removal efficiency of these technologies, thus alleviating the problem of the release of BB into the environment.

Removal of emerging contaminants in conventional and advanced biological wastewater treatment plants in India-a comparison of treatment technologies

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are a growing concern for the environment and human health. The study investigates 20 commonly reported ECs in 10 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in urban to semi-urban settlements of north India over two years in the summer and winter. The selected plants were based on waste stabilization pond (WSP), up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), activated sludge process (ASP), anoxic-aerobic process (AO), anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process, biodenipho process, sequencing batch reactor, and densadeg-biofor process. Of the 20 ECs, all 20 were identified in the influent and effluent, and 13 were identified in the final sludge on at least one occasion. The concentration in the influent, effluent, and sludge varied in the range from 2.5 ng/L to 77.4 μg/L, below limit of detection (LOD) to 1.984 μg/L, and < LOD to 1.41 μg/g, respectively. Acetaminophen and caffeine were predominately detected in the influent, whereas naproxen, ciprofloxacin, and carbamazepine were predominant in the effluent. The total removal in the plants was found in the range of 40.3-68.6%, mainly attributed to biodegradation/biotransformation. Removal of ECs by WWTPs, ranked by a relative removal criterion, followed the order: Biological nutrient removal based plants > WSP > UASB > densadeg-biofor > AO > ASP > combitreat-SBR. The risk assessment showed the risk to algae from antibiotics and triclosan, daphnia from triclosan, and fish from triclosan and hormones.

Construction of bacterial consortium for efficient degradation of mixed pharmaceutical dyes

Synthetic dyes are established colorants in the pharmaceutical industries for the coating and coloration of tablets, capsules, etc. to mark the specific formulation and dosage, improve the stability, and esthetic value. The pharmaceuticals manufacturing process releases large volumes of dye-containing wastewaters, contributing to eco-toxic concerns related to different health risks. In this study, biodegradation of amaranth, sunset yellow, tartrazine, indigo carmine, and quinoline yellow dyes was investigated in the mixed environment. Initially, 24 tolerant bacterial strains were isolated from pharmaceutical wastewater samples, among which 19 strains were found to be non-virulent. Five different consortia were constructed by considering the 19 strains among which C1 consisting of strains DY7, 10, 11, and 18 was found to be the most potential consortium with an overall efficiency of 96.65% dye degradation in the presence of glucose after 15 days. The strains DY7, 10, 11, and 18 were identified as members of the Klebsiella genus by 16S rRNA partial sequencing. The cell wall structure, carbohydrate utilization profile, and metabolic characterization were conducted on the selected strains of C1. Among the 25 different antibiotics, DY7 and DY11 exhibited the highest zone of growth inhibition in the presence of cefixime, and DY10 was restricted by chloramphenicol whereas DY18 was found sensitive to ceftazidime/tazobactam.

Treatment Trends and Combined Methods in Removing Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products from Wastewater-A Review

When discharged into wastewater, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) become microorganic contaminants and are among the largest groups of emerging pollutants. Human, animal, and aquatic organisms' exposures to PPCPs have linked them to an array of carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reproductive toxicity risks. For this reason, various methods are being implemented to remove them from water bodies. This report critically reviews these methods and suggests improvements to removal strategies. Biological, physical, and chemical methods such as biological degradation, adsorption, membrane filtration, and advanced electrical and chemical oxidation are the common methods used. However, these processes were not integrated into most studies to take advantage of the different mechanisms specific to each process and are synergistic in the removal of the PPCPs that differ in their physical and chemical characteristics (charge, molecular weight, hydrophobicity, hydrogen bonding, structure). In the review articles published to date, very little information is available on the use of such integrated methods for removing PPCPs. This report attempts to fill this gap with our knowledge.

Contamination, transport, and ecological risks of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in a large irrigation region

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have attracted widespread attention owing to their extensive use and potential adverse effects on human and ecosystem health. There is a lack of information regarding the occurrence and environmental fate of PPCPs in large agricultural irrigation areas in China. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive survey on 30 PPCPs in water from Hetao Irrigation District, one of the three largest irrigation areas in China. The ΣPPCP-concentrations ranged 82.13-1409.24 ng/L in August and 40.53-887.20 ng/L in November, with caffeine (CAF), norfloxacin (NOR), erythromycin (ERY), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and ofloxacin (OFL) being the predominant compositions. Spatially, the average ΣPPCP concentrations increased from irrigation to drainage water, and then decreased in Wuliangsuhai Lake. Less PPCP mass loading (55.05 kg/y) migrated from Wuliangsuhai Lake to Yellow River than that from the Yellow River to Hetao Irrigation District (425.88 kg/y), indicating that Wuliangsuhai Lake plays an important role in improving water quality. An ecological risk assessment showed that it is worthwhile to consider the presence of CAF, ERY, NOR, and OFL in natural surface water and to control their potential risks.

Cosmetic Preservatives: Hazardous Micropollutants in Need of Greater Attention?

In recent years, personal care products (PCPs) have surfaced as a novel class of pollutants due to their release into wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and receiving environments by sewage effluent and biosolid-augmentation soil, which poses potential risks to non-target organisms. Among PCPs, there are preservatives that are added to cosmetics for protection against microbial spoilage. This paper presents a review of the occurrence in different environmental matrices, toxicological effects, and mechanisms of microbial degradation of four selected preservatives (triclocarban, chloroxylenol, methylisothiazolinone, and benzalkonium chloride). Due to the insufficient removal from WWTPs, cosmetic preservatives have been widely detected in aquatic environments and sewage sludge at concentrations mainly below tens of µg L^-1. These compounds are toxic to aquatic organisms, such as fish, algae, daphnids, and rotifers, as well as terrestrial organisms. A summary of the mechanisms of preservative biodegradation by micro-organisms and analysis of emerging intermediates is also provided. Formed metabolites are often characterized by lower toxicity compared to the parent compounds. Further studies are needed for an evaluation of environmental concentrations of preservatives in diverse matrices and toxicity to more species of aquatic and terrestrial organisms, and for an understanding of the mechanisms of microbial degradation. The research should focus on chloroxylenol and methylisothiazolinone because these compounds are the least understood.

Updated knowledge, partitioning and ecological risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in global aquatic environments

Over the last few decades, the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments has generated increasing public concern. In this review, data on the presence of PPCPs in environmental compartments from the past few years (2014-2022) are summarized by carrying out a critical survey of the partitioning among water, sediment, and aquatic organisms. From the available articles on PPCP occurrence in the environment, in Web of Science and Scopus databases, 185 articles were evaluated. Diclofenac, carbamazepine, caffeine, ibuprofen, ciprofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole were reported to occur in 85% of the studies in at least one of the mentioned matrices. Risk assessment showed a moderate to high environmental risk for these compounds worldwide. Moreover, bioconcentration factors showed that sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim can bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms, while ciprofloxacin and triclosan present bioaccumulation potential. Regarding spatial distribution, the Asian and European continents presented most studies on the occurrence and effects of PPCPs on the environment, while Africa and Asia are the most contaminated continents. In addition, the impact of COVID-19 on environmental contamination by PPCPs is discussed.

Occurrence, transport and environmental risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) at the mouth of Jiaozhou Bay, China based on stir bar sorptive extraction

In recent years, research on pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the marine environment has attracted increasing attention worldwide. However, more work is needed to improve PPCPs detection methods, specifically for seawater environments. An analytical method based on stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) had been developed and fully optimized for the pretreatment and detection of ten widely used PPCPs that are commonly found in seawater samples. By optimizing several variables including the material of the stir bars, extraction temperature, extraction time, ionic strength, desorption solvent, and desorption time, the optimized method has achieved excellent results in the detection and quantification of target PPCPs with detection limits ranging from 0.03 to 1 ng/L. The distribution of target PPCPs at the mouth of Jiaozhou Bay was successfully determined by this method, and the concentrations and detection frequencies of PPCPs varied greatly from N.D. to 449.36 ng/L and from 9.1 % to 100 %, respectively. Moreover, the distributions of PPCPs were explained by the Lagrangian particle-tracking model, and the results showed that the Tuandao sewage treatment plant had the most significant impact on the study area. The environmental risk assessment results showed that several target PPCPs might pose risks to aquatic organisms. In particular, triclocarban should receive more attention and the risk quotients of the mixtures (MRQ) should not be ignored.

TiO2 based Photocatalysis membranes: An efficient strategy for pharmaceutical mineralization

Among the various emerging contaminants, pharmaceuticals (PhACs) seem to have adverse effects on the quality of water. Even the smallest concentration of PhACs in ground water and drinking water is harmful to humans and aquatic species. Among all the deaths reported due to COVID-19, the mortality rate was higher for those patients who consumed antibiotics. Consequently, PhAC in water is a serious concern and their removal needs immediate attention. This study has focused on the PhACs' degradation by collaborating photocatalysis with membrane filtration. TiO₂-based photocatalytic membrane is an innovative strategy which demonstrates mineralization of PhACs as a safer option. To highlight the same, an emphasis on the preparation and reinforcing properties of TiO₂-based nanomembranes has been elaborated in this review. Further, mineralization of antibiotics or cytostatic compounds and their degradation mechanisms is also highlighted using TiO₂ assisted membrane photocatalysis. Experimental reactor configurations have been discussed for commercial implementation of photoreactors for PhAC degradation anchored photocatalytic nanomembranes. Challenges and future perspectives are emphasized in order to design a nanomembrane based prototype in future for wastewater management.

Occurrences, transport drivers, and risk assessments of antibiotics in typical oasis surface and groundwater

Intensive use of antibiotics affects biogeochemical cycles and stimulates the evolution of antibiotic resistance, thus threatening global health and social development. The spatiotemporal distributions of antibiotics in single aqueous matrices have been widely documented; however, their occurrence in surface-groundwater systems has received less attention, especially in arid regions that usually have fragile ecosystems. Therefore, we investigated the occurrence of thirty-one antibiotics in the surface water and adjacent groundwater in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. The results showed that the total concentrations of detected antibiotics varied from 17.37 to 84.09 ng L^-1 and from 16.38 to 277.41 ng L^-1 in surface and groundwater, respectively. The median concentration of antibiotics showed the pattern of norfloxacin (4.86 ng L^-1) > ciprofloxacin (3.93 ng L^-1) > pefloxacin (3.39 ng L^-1) in surface water; whereas in groundwater, this was in the order of pefloxacin (6.30 ng L^-1) > norfloxacin (4.33 ng L^-1) > ciprofloxacin (2.68 ng L^-1). Heatmap analysis indicated that vertical infiltration had limited effects on antibiotic exchange in surface-ground water systems because of the high potential evaporation and low water storage. Redundancy analysis suggested that the oxidation-reduction potential (p < 0.01) and dissolved oxygen (p < 0.05) jointly affected the distribution of antibiotics in surface water. Ecological risk assessment showed that antibiotics in 98.9% of surface water and 99.1% of groundwater did not pose significant risks to aquatic species. The findings of this study will help develop effective mitigation strategies for antibiotics in aquatic environments.

Invertebrates differentially bioaccumulate pharmaceuticals: Implications for routine biomonitoring

Surface water quality monitoring programs have been developed to examine traditional contaminants, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). However, urbanization, which is increasing around the world, is increasing discharge of treated wastewater and raw sewage in many regions. Pharmaceuticals and their metabolites represent typical markers of such trajectories in urbanization. We selected an ongoing monitoring program, which was designed for routine surveillance of nonionizable POPs in different aquatic matrices, to examine the occurrence of 67 pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in water and multiple bioindicator matrices: benthic invertebrates, juvenile fish, and adult fish (plasma and muscle tissue) from ten river systems with varying levels of watershed development. In addition, we placed zebra mussels and passive samplers in situ for a fixed period. A statistically significant relationship between pharmaceutical levels in passive samplers and biota was found for caged zebra mussels and benthic invertebrates, while only a few pharmaceuticals were identified in fish matrices. Invertebrates, which have received relatively limited study for pharmaceutical bioaccumulation, accumulated more pharmaceuticals than fish, up to thirty different substances. The highest concentration was observed for sertraline in zebra mussels and telmisartan in benthic invertebrates (83 and 31 ng/g ww, respectively). Our results across diverse study systems indicate that ongoing surface water quality monitoring programs, which were originally designed for traditional organic pollutants, need to be revised to account for bioaccumulation dynamics of pharmaceuticals and other ionizable contaminants. Aquatic monitoring programs routinely examine accumulation of nonionizable organic pollutants; however, we identified that these efforts need to be revised to account for bioaccumulation of ionizable contaminants, which reached higher levels in invertebrates than in fish.

Catalytic pyrolysis of lotus leaves for producing nitrogen self-doping layered graphitic biochar: Performance and mechanism for peroxydisulfate activation

In this study, nitrogen self-doping layered graphitic biochar (Na-BC900) was prepared by catalytic pyrolysis of lotus leaves at 900 ^°C, in the presence of NaCl catalyst, for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. NaCl as catalyst played a crucial part in the preparation of Na-BC900 and could be reused. The SMX degradation rate in Na-BC900/PDS system was 12 times higher than that in un-modified biochar (BC900)/PDS system. The excellent performance of Na-BC900 for PDS activation was attributed to its large specific surface areas (SSAs), the enhanced graphitization structure and the high graphitic N content. The quenching and electrochemical experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies inferred that the radicals included SO₄^•-, ^•OH, O₂^•- and the non-radical processes were driven by ¹O₂ and biochar mediated electron migration. Both radical and non-radical mechanisms contributed to the removal of SMX. Additionally, this catalytic pyrolysis strategy was clarified to be scalable, which can be applied to produce multiple biomass-based biochar catalysts for restoration of polluted water bodies.

Repeated introduction of micropollutants enhances microbial succession despite stable degradation patterns

The increasing-volume release of micropollutants into natural surface waters has raised great concern due to their environmental accumulation. Persisting micropollutants can impact multiple generations of organisms, but their microbially-mediated degradation and their influence on community assembly remain understudied. Here, freshwater microbes were treated with several common micropollutants, alone or in combination, and then transferred every 5 days to fresh medium containing the same micropollutants to mimic the repeated exposure of microbes. Metabarcoding of 16S rRNA gene makers was chosen to study the succession of bacterial assemblages following micropollutant exposure. The removal rates of micropollutants were then measured to assess degradation capacity of the associated communities. The degradation of micropollutants did not accelerate over time but altered the microbial community composition. Community assembly was dominated by stochastic processes during early exposure, via random community changes and emergence of seedbanks, and deterministic processes later in the exposure, via advanced community succession. Early exposure stages were characterized by the presence of sensitive microorganisms such as Actinobacteria and Planctomycetes, which were then replaced by more tolerant bacteria such as Bacteroidetes and Gammaproteobacteria. Our findings have important implication for ecological feedback between microbe-micropollutants under anthropogenic climate change scenarios.

Wastewater surveillance for 168 pharmaceuticals and metabolites in a WWTP: Occurrence, temporal variations and feasibility of metabolic biomarkers for intake estimation

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is amply used for mining information about public health such as the estimation of consumption/intake of certain substances. Yet, proper biomarker selection is critical to obtain reliable data. This study measured a broad range of pharmaceuticals and metabolites in a wastewater treatment plant in Beijing, China, and evaluated their suitability as consumption estimation biomarkers. Wastewater sampling was conducted during a normal week and two holiday weeks to assess the impact of the holiday on population normalized daily mass loads (PNDLs). One hundred and forty-nine out of 168 pharmaceuticals were detected, with 94 analytes being quantified in all sampling events. Moreover, digestive drug cimetidine (<MDL∼672 ng L ^- 1) and anabolic steroid trenbolone (<MDL∼53 ng L ^- 1) were only detected during holiday weeks. PNDLs of some substances showed disparities between weekdays and weekends during the normal week. This study proposed a framework to diagnose whether a parent compound or its metabolite is suitable for intake/prevalence rate estimation. Our results support that not all the metabolites can be employed as biomarkers for back-calculation when the in-sewer stability of these compounds is unclear, such as metoprolol acid and O-desmethyl venlafaxine. Public healthcare data for drug utilization were applied to validate the prevalence of average substance use in this study. As a popular anti-epileptic ranging from hundreds to thousands of ng L ^- 1 in this study, the parent compound levetiracetam is more appropriate to be used in WBE under our framework, referring to public healthcare data. This WBE study illustrates the changes in pharmaceutical use and population lifestyle that stem from holidays and commutes. In addition, it can provide data support for the selection of more suitable biomarkers in WBE studies.

Abundance, fate, and effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aquatic environments

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are found in wastewater, and thus, the environment. In this study, current knowledge about the occurrence and fate of PPCPs in aquatic systems-including wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and natural waters around the world-is critically reviewed to inform the state of the science and highlight existing knowledge gaps. Excretion by humans is the primary route of PPCPs entry into municipal wastewater systems, but significant contributions also occur through emissions from hospitals, PPCPs manufacturers, and agriculture. Abundance of PPCPs in raw wastewater is influenced by several factors, including the population density and demography served by WWTPs, presence of hospitals and drugs manufacturers in the sewershed, disease burden of the population served, local regulations, and climatic conditions. Based on the data obtained from WWTPs, analgesics, antibiotics, and stimulants (e.g., caffeine) are the most abundant PPCPs in raw wastewater. In conventional WWTPs, most removal of PPCPs occurs during secondary treatment, and overall removal exceeds 90% for treatable PPCPs. Regardless, the total PPCP mass discharged with effluent by an average WWTP into receiving waters (7.35-20,160 g/day) is still considerable, because potential adverse effects of some PPCPs (such as ibuprofen) on aquatic organisms occur within measured concentrations found in surface waters.

Biogenic metal nanoparticles with microbes and their applications in water treatment: a review

Due to their unique characteristics, nanomaterials are widely used in many applications including water treatment. They are usually synthesized via physiochemical methods mostly involving toxic chemicals and extreme conditions. Recently, the biogenic metal nanoparticles (Bio-Me-NPs) with microbes have triggered extensive exploration. Besides their environmental-friendly raw materials and ambient biosynthesis conditions, Bio-Me-NPs also exhibit the unique surface properties and crystalline structures, which could eliminate various contaminants from water. Recent findings in the synthesis, morphology, composition, and structure of Bio-Me-NPs have been reviewed here, with an emphasis on the metal elements of Fe, Mn, Pd, Au, and Ag and their composites which are synthesized by bacteria, fungi, and algae. Furthermore, the mechanisms of eliminating organic and inorganic contaminants with Bio-Me-NPs are elucidated in detail, including adsorption, oxidation, reduction, and catalysis. The scale-up applicability of Bio-Me-NPs is also discussed.

Occurrence, transformation, bioaccumulation, risk and analysis of pharmaceutical and personal care products from wastewater: a review

Almost all aspects of society from food security to disease control and prevention have benefited from pharmaceutical and personal care products, yet these products are a major source of contamination that ends up in wastewater and ecosystems. This issue has been sharply accentuated during the coronavirus disease pandemic 2019 (COVID-19) due to the higher use of disinfectants and other products. Here we review pharmaceutical and personal care products with focus on their occurrence in the environment, detection, risk, and removal.

A Review of the Occurrence of Pharmaceutical Compounds as Emerging Contaminants in Treated Wastewater and Aquatic Environments

In recent years, pharmaceutical compounds have emerged as potential contaminants in the aquatic matrices of the environment. High production, consumption, and limited removal through conventional treatment processes/wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the major causes for the occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater and aquatic environments worldwide. A number of studies report adverse health effects and risks to aquatic life and the ecosystem because of the presence of pharmaceutical compounds in the aquatic environment. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of the occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in treated wastewater from various WWTPs, surface water and groundwater bodies. Additionally, this review provides comprehensive information and pointers for research in wastewater treatment and waterbodies management.

Recent advances in degradation of pharmaceuticals using Bi2WO6 mediated photocatalysis - A comprehensive review

The pollution of water bodies by residual pharmaceuticals is a major problem globally. Bismuth tungstate mediated photocatalysis has been effective in the removal of these organics from water. Bismuth tungstate (Bi₂WO₆) has proven to be an excellent visible light active photocatalyst because of its non-toxicity, low band gap energy and ease of preparation. It has been widely applied for the removal of a wide array of organic pollutants, particularly dyes, from wastewater. However, recently, much attention has been channelled to its application for the degradation of pharmaceuticals. In this present review, the recent trends in the applications of Bi₂WO₆ based photocatalysts for the removal of pharmaceuticals in wastewater are comprehensively discussed. The fabrication of Bi₂WO₆ based photocatalysts with enhanced photocatalytic performances through morphology control, doping and formation of heterojunctions are highlighted. Much discussion centres on the mechanisms and possible degradation pathways of antibiotic pharmaceuticals in wastewater. Finally, areas needing more attention and investigation on the use of Bi₂WO₆ based photocatalysts for removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater especially towards real-life applications are presented for future research directions.

Dissolved rubidium to strontium ratio as a conservative tracer for wastewater effluent-sourced contaminant inputs near a major urban wastewater treatment plant

Municipal wastewater (MWW) effluent discharges can introduce contaminants to receiving waters which may have adverse impacts on local ecosystems and human health. Conservative chemical constituents specific to the MWW effluent stream can be used to quantify and trace wastewater effluent-sourced contaminant inputs. Gadolinium (Gd), a rare earth element used as a contrasting agent in medical magnetic resonance imaging, can be found in urban MWW streams. Dissolved anthropogenic Gd has been shown to be an indicator and potential conservative tracer for MWW effluent in receiving waters. Like other known MWW tracers, it can be difficult and expensive to measure. Dissolved rubidium (Rb) to strontium (Sr) ratio enrichment in biological materials such as blood and urine can lead to enriched Rb/Sr values in MWW effluent relative to natural waters. This ratio is relatively easy and inexpensive to measure and represents a promising additional indicator for MWW effluent in receiving waters in urbanized freshwater systems. In July 2015 and 2016 surface water samples were collected from sites in the tidal-fresh Potomac River in the vicinity of the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (BPAWWTP) outfall near Washington, DC USA along with treated MWW effluent samples from the BPAWWTP. Dissolved Rb/Sr ratios were measured in these waters and compared to dissolved Gd concentrations in order to demonstrate the potential of the dissolved Rb/Sr ratio as a conservative indicator for MWW effluent. Results suggest the dissolved Rb/Sr ratio represents a simple and cost-effective indicator and conservative tracer for MWW effluent. It can be used with, or in place of, other proven tracers to investigate wastewater impacts in highly-urbanized, anthropogenically-impacted freshwater systems like the tidal fresh Potomac River and perhaps in a wider range of geologic settings than previously thought. A case study is presented as an example to demonstrate the potential of using dissolved Rb/Sr ratios to trace MWW-sourced nutrient inputs from a major WWTP like BPAWWTP to the receiving waters of tidal-fresh Potomac River.

Pharmaceutical Compounds in Aquatic Environments-Occurrence, Fate and Bioremediation Prospective

Various contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have been detected in different ecosystems, posing a threat to living organisms and the environment. Pharmaceuticals are among the many CECs that enter the environment through different pathways, with wastewater treatment plants being the main input of these pollutants. Several technologies for the removal of these pollutants have been developed through the years, but there is still a lack of sustainable technologies suitable for being applied in natural environments. In this regard, solutions based on natural biological processes are attractive for the recovery of contaminated environments. Bioremediation is one of these natural-based solutions and takes advantage of the capacity of microorganisms to degrade different organic pollutants. Degradation of pollutants by native microorganisms is already known to be an important detoxification mechanism that is involved in natural attenuation processes that occur in the environment. Thus, bioremediation technologies based on the selection of natural degrading bacteria seem to be a promising clean-up technology suitable for application in natural environments. In this review, an overview of the occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals is carried out, in which bioremediation tools are explored for the removal of these pollutants from impacted environments.

Environmental Risk Assessment of Active Human Pharmaceutical Ingredients in Urban Rivers in Japan

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) have become a public concern owing to their possible adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan (MHLW) issued "Guidance on the Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) in new pharmaceutical development" in 2016. To evaluate the validity of phase 1 in the MHLW's ERA guidance, we monitored the measured environmental concentrations (MECs) of approved APIs in urban rivers and sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Japan and compared these MECs with the predicted environmental concentration (PEC). We collected water samples from urban seven rivers and three STPs during each season. Fifty-one APIs for human and veterinary use and the artificial sweetener sucralose were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Forty-four APIs were observed in the rivers and 42 were found in the influent and effluent of STPs, with levels ranging from nanograms to micrograms per liter. The action limit in phase I of the MHLW's guidance was set to 10 ng/L, and there was no API except for ketoprofen, for which PEC of the MHLW's guidance (PECjapan) was lower than 10 ng/L and the maximum MEC (MECmax) was 10 ng/L or greater. Almost all APIs also had median MECs that were lower than those of the respective PECjapan. These results indicate that the PECjapan values in phase I of the MHLW's guidance were appropriate. However, some APIs had MECmax values that were greater than those of the respective PECjapan due to overestimation of the dilution factor of river water and/or underestimation of API production.

Toxicity and sublethal effects of methylparaben on zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae and adults

Among the parabens, methylparaben (MeP) is the most commonly found in personal care products. Due to the continuous use of MeP and low removal efficiency by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), it reaches aquatic environments, where it is incorporated by organisms inhabiting these waters. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of MeP on the zebrafish Danio rerio larvae and adults through toxicity tests and physiological and biochemical biomarkers in order to assess possible harmful effects of MeP. For biomarker measurements, fish were exposed to the environmental concentration of 30 μg/L of MeP and the non-effect concentration (NOEC) estimated for larvae (60 mg/L) and adult (50 mg/L) in toxicity tests. The median lethal concentration (LC₅₀) of MeP was 105.09 mg/L for adults and 211.12 mg/L for larvae. These values unexpectedly indicated that adults were more sensitive to MeP compared to larvae. In adult fish, exposure to 50 mg/L MeP induced a significant decrease in phase 1 biotransformation (ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase activity) and an increase in lipoperoxidation (LPO) in gills, as well as an increase in frequency of micronuclei in erythrocytes of these fish. Biomarkers results were integrated (integrated biomarker response [IBR] index), and it observed lower IBR scores in tissues of fish exposed to MeP, suggesting a suppression of biological responses. In addition, LPO contributed mostly to the IBR score estimated for gills of fish exposed to 50 mg/L MeP. Based on LPO quantity, sublethal exposure of MeP (30 μg/L and 60 mg/L) did not cause toxicity to larvae. Hence, we investigated whether the difference in sensitivity between adults and larvae could be associated with the antimicrobial action of MeP that could affect the intestinal microbiota of adults. We only found an increase in the number of carbon sources consumed by them without effects on diversity and abundance. This outcome can be considered an adaptation to environmental stress, but not a negative effect. However, the LPO and genotoxicity caused by MeP to zebrafish adults call direct attention to the importance of regulating the presence of this compound in the environment and improve cleaning processes adopted by WWTP.

Recent developments in physical, biological, chemical, and hybrid treatment techniques for removing emerging contaminants from wastewater

Emerging contaminants (ECs) in wastewater have recently attracted the attention of researchers as they pose significant risks to human health and wildlife. This paper presents the state-of-art technologies used to remove ECs from wastewater through a comprehensive review. It also highlights the challenges faced by existing EC removal technologies in wastewater treatment plants and provides future research directions. Many treatment technologies like biological, chemical, and physical approaches have been advanced for removing various ECs. However, currently, no individual technology can effectively remove ECs, whereas hybrid systems have often been found to be more efficient. A hybrid technique of ozonation accompanied by activated carbon was found significantly effective in removing some ECs, particularly pharmaceuticals and pesticides. Despite the lack of extensive research, nanotechnology may be a promising approach as nanomaterial incorporated technologies have shown potential in removing different contaminants from wastewater. Nevertheless, most existing technologies are highly energy and resource-intensive as well as costly to maintain and operate. Besides, most proposed advanced treatment technologies are yet to be evaluated for large-scale practicality. Complemented with techno-economic feasibility studies of the treatment techniques, comprehensive research and development are therefore necessary to achieve a full and effective removal of ECs by wastewater treatment plants.

A review on the role of plant in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) removal in constructed wetlands

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) cause ongoing water pollution and consequently have attracted wide attention. Constructed wetlands (CWs) show good PPCP removal performance through combined processes of substrates, plants, and microorganisms; however, most published research focuses on the role of substrates and microorganisms. This review summarizes the direct and indirect roles of wetland plants in PPCP removal, respectively. These direct effects include PPCP precipitation on root surface iron plaque, and direct absorption and degradation by plants. Indirect effects, which appear more significant than direct effects, include enhancement of PPCP removal through improved rhizosphere microbial activities (more than twice as much as bulk soil) stimulated by radial oxygen loss and exudate secretions, and the formation of supramolecular ensembles from PPCPs and humic acids from decaying plant materials which improving PPCPs removal efficiency by up to four times. To clarify the internal mechanisms of PPCP removal by plants in CWs, factors affecting wetland plant performance were reviewed. Based on this review, future research needs have been identified.

Preparation of Fe-MIL(100)-encapsulated magnetic g-C3N4 for adsorption of PPCPs from aqueous solution

In the present work, the Fe-MIL(100) was encapsulated on the outer surface of magnetic g-C₃N₄ through a simple method to synthesize a novel adsorbent. The as-prepared g-C₃N₄/MnFe₂O₄/Fe-MIL(100) was characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), BET specific surface area (BET), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and plasma emission spectrometry (PES). The g-C₃N₄/MnFe₂O₄/Fe-MIL(100) possessed rough surface, large surface area (303.68 m²/g), mesoporous structure and magnetic properties, which exhibited excellent adsorption performance for ciprofloxacin (CIP), oxytetracycline (OTC) and indomethacin (IDM) with the maximum adsorption capacities reaching up to 45.51, 64.34 and 103.91 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption processes of all three PPCPs could be described by different kinds of isotherms and kinetic models. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of the resulting adsorbent could maintain 73.43% of the first adsorption capacity even after ten cycles. Finally, the possible adsorption mechanisms of g-C₃N₄/MnFe₂O₄/Fe-MIL(100) for CIP/OTC/IDM were proposed. Thus, g-C₃N₄/MnFe₂O₄/Fe-MIL(100) possessed excellent features of high adsorption capacity, fast removal rate, easy synthesis, salt resistance and magnetic separation, which showed great potential application to be used as an effective adsorbent for adsorptive removal of PPCPs in wastewater.

Comparative overview of advanced oxidation processes and biological approaches for the removal pharmaceuticals

Nowadays, pharmaceuticals are the center of significant environmental research due to their complex and highly stable bioactivity, increasing concentration in the water streams and high persistence in aquatic environments. Conventional wastewater treatment techniques are generally inadequate to remove these pollutants. Aiming to tackle this issue effectively, various methods have been developed and investigated on the light of chemical, physical and biological procedures. Increasing attention has recently been paid to the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) as efficient methods for the complete mineralization of pharmaceuticals. Their high operating costs compared to other processes, however, remain a challenge. Hence, this review summarizes the current and state of art related to AOPs, biological treatment and their effective exploitation for the degradation of various pharmaceuticals and other emerging molecules present in wastewater. The review covers the last decade with a particular focus on the previous five years. It is further envisioned that this review of advanced oxidation methods and biological treatments, discussed herein, will help readers to better understand the mechanisms and limitations of these methods for the removal of pharmaceuticals from the environment. In addition, we compared AOPs and biological treatments for the disposal of pharmaceuticals from the point of view of cost, effectiveness, and popularity of their use. The exploitation of coupling AOPs and biological procedures for the degradation of pharmaceuticals in wastewater was also presented. It is worthy of note that an integrated AOPs/biological system is essential to reach the complete degradation of pharmaceuticals; other advantages of this hybrid technique involve low energy cost, an efficient degradation process and generation of non-toxic by-products.
