Abstract
Conventional wound approximation devices, including sutures, staples, and glues, are widely used but risk of wound dehiscence, local infection, and scarring can be exacerbated in these approaches, including in diabetic and obese individuals. This study reports the efficacy and quality of tissue repair upon photothermal sealing of full-thickness incisional skin wounds using silk fibroin-based laser-activated sealants (LASEs) containing copper chloride salt (Cu-LASE) or silver nanoprisms (AgNPr-LASE), which absorb and convert near-infrared (NIR) laser energy to heat. LASE application results in rapid and effective skin sealing in healthy, immunodeficient, as well as diabetic and obese mice. Although lower recovery of epidermal structure and function was seen with AgNPr-LASE sealing, likely because of the hyperthermia induced by laser and presence of this material in the wound space, this approach resulted in higher enhancement in recovery of skin biomechanical strength compared to sutures and Cu-LASEs in diabetic, obese mice. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses revealed that AgNPr-LASEs resulted in significantly lower neutrophil migration to the wound compared to Cu-LASEs and sutures, indicating a more muted inflammatory response. Cu-LASEs resulted in local tissue toxicity likely because of effects of copper ions as manifested in the form of a significant epidermal gap and a 'depletion zone', which was a region devoid of viable cells proximal to the wound. Compared to sutures, LASE-mediated sealing, in later stages of healing, resulted in increased angiogenesis and diminished myofibroblast activation, which can be indicative of lower scarring. AgNPr-LASE loaded with vancomycin, an antibiotic drug, significantly lowered methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) load in a pathogen challenge model in diabetic and obese mice and also reduced post-infection inflammation of tissue compared to antibacterial sutures. Taken together, these attributes indicate that AgNPr-LASE demonstrated a more balanced quality of tissue sealing and repair in diabetic and obese mice and can be used for combating local infections, that can result in poor healing in these individuals.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The rising burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Africa is of great concern. Health data sciences is a rapidly developing field which has the potential to improve health outcomes, especially in low-middle income countries with burdened healthcare systems. We aim to explore the current CVD landscape in Africa, highlighting the importance of health data sciences in the region and identifying potential opportunities for application and growth by leveraging health data sciences to improve CVD outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS While there have been a number of initiatives aimed at developing health data sciences in Africa over the recent decades, the progress and growth are still in their early stages. Its maximum potential can be leveraged through adequate funding, advanced training programs, focused resource allocation, encouraging bidirectional international partnerships, instituting best ethical practices, and prioritizing data science health research in the region. The findings of this review explore the current landscape of CVD and highlight the potential benefits and utility of health data sciences to address CVD challenges in Africa. By understanding and overcoming the barriers associated with health data sciences training, research, and application in the region, focused initiatives can be developed to promote research and development. These efforts will allow policymakers to form informed, evidence-based frameworks for the prevention and management of CVDs, and ultimately result in improved CVD outcomes in the region.

Abstract
PURPOSE The worldwide prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) continues to increase. As DM is linked to various ophthalmological comorbidities, it is crucial to understand the incidence and the treatment patterns of these complications to minimise the treatment burden for the patient and the healthcare system. This study aims to evaluate the incidence and prevalence of diabetic macular oedema (DME) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and to analyse intravitreal (IVT) treatment patterns and responses in the Finnish population with diabetes. METHODS A nationwide data register containing details of over 20-year-old individuals with diabetes was used in the analyses. RESULTS The incidence and prevalence of DME and PDR among the Finnish population with diabetes either declined or remained stable during 2007-2017 (Incidence rate: DME -40.8%, PDR -65.3%; prevalence rate: DME +4.7%, PDR -11.2%). During the same period, number of persons suffering from diabetes increased by +58.3%. The total number of IVT injections increased by 261.7%; the number of patients receiving IVT treatments increased by 133.6% from 2011 to 2017, reflecting changes in patient numbers in the ophthalmology departments. Furthermore, irrespective of the rising number of patients with diabetes, the numbers with visual impairment declined by 75.8% among DME and by 75.7% among PDR patients in 2007-2017. CONCLUSIONS Regardless of the considerable increase in the workload of ophthalmology departments, the healthcare system has been able to reduce both the age and sex standardised incidence of DME and PDR among the diabetic population suffering from a visual impairment associated with this disease.

Abstract
Background Beinaglutide, whose active ingredient is rhGLP-1, has been widely used as a pharmacological therapy for T2DM. We explored the safety and pharmacokinetics of beinaglutide in Chinese overweight/obese volunteers to lay a foundation for clinical applications of beinaglutide as an anti-obesity drug. Methods An open-label, single center, multiple ascending dose phase I clinical trial was conducted in 16 overweight/obese Chinese volunteers. The plasma concentrations of beinaglutide were determined by a validated ELISA method and the pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated via non-compartmental analysis methods. Adverse events were also recorded. Results Beinaglutide sequentially multiple dosing (three times daily) at different doses were generally well tolerated, without serious AEs leading to discontinuation of the trial. After multiple subcutaneous injections of different doses (0.1, 0.14 and 0.2 mg), the average blood concentration of beinaglutide with or without baseline correction showed a similar trend among different dose groups on different study days. After reaching the peak concentration around 15 min, it began to decrease, and the median of Tmax and Tmax,adj was 10-15 min. The exposure in vivo increased in proportion to the dosage increment, demonstrating linear pharmacokinetic characteristics. There were no statistically significant differences in the main PK parameters and no accumulation of beinaglutide after multiple dosing. After multiple subcutaneous injections, a gender difference was observed, while no differences in BMI were found under the grouping conditions. Conclusion The safety profile and pharmacokinetic properties support further development and clinical applications of beinaglutide as an anti-obesity drug. Abstract
To enhance the intestinal targeted release of kidney tea saponins, a simple delivery system was designed through the use of porous starch (PS), sodium alginate (ALG) and xanthan gum (XG). Porous starch was prepared by hydrolysis with a combination of α-amylase and amyloglucosidase and it was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, which revealed the formation of porous structures in the starch granules. The results of one-way optimisation illustrated that this unique delivery system achieved 79.00 ± 1.22 % of the optimal encapsulation rate. The carrier structure was subjected to analysis using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The α-glucosidase inhibition assay showed better inhibition of kidney tea saponin compared to the positive control acarbose. In addition, the effectiveness of this delivery design was confirmed via an in vitro simulated digestion method. It was showed that only a 15.57 ± 1.27 % release rate of kidney tea saponin was observed in the upper gastrointestinal tract, whereas release rates of 17.51 ± 1.29 % and 41.07 ± 0.76 % were observed for xanthan gum/sodium alginate/kidney tea saponin and sodium alginate/kidney tea saponin beads, respectively. It was concluded that the utilization of PS and a xanthan gum/sodium alginate coating represents an efficacious methodology for the development of an intestinal targeted delivery system.

Abstract
Improvement in vitro maturation culture conditions has been achieved by mimicking in vivo culture environments such as the follicular fluid. Acetic acid is an energy substrate that is abundantly present in the follicular fluid but has not been considered in vitro maturation. This study examined the effects of acetic acid on oocyte quality during nuclear maturation. Cumulus cells and oocyte complexes were collected from the porcine antral follicles of gilt ovaries and matured with 0, 0.1 or 1 mmol/L of acetic acid. After 44 h of in vitro maturation, the energy status, mitochondrial quality and function and embryonic developmental rate following parthenogenetic activation were determined. RNA-sequencing and protein expression analyses were conducted to predict the effects of acetic acid. Supplementation of the in vitro maturation medium with acetic acid (1 mmol/L) improved embryonic development. Oocytes matured with acetic acid had low adenosine triphosphate and lipid contents, mitochondrial membrane potential and reactive oxygen species levels. RNA-sequencing revealed differential expression of genes associated with the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase signalling pathway. Immunostaining revealed that acetic acid increased the levels of phospho-adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase, phospho-acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase, and sirtuin 1 and decreased those of fatty acid synthase and acetyl-coenzyme A synthetase 1. In summary, the use of acetic acid during oocyte maturation improved oocyte developmental ability and metabolism by altering mitochondrial activity and lipid metabolism.

Abstract
This case report presents a novel, non-pharmacological treatment of Type 2 Diabetes in a 46-year-old male, demonstrating improvements in blood chemistry and psychometric markers after 8 treatments using a Mind-Body Intervention (MBI) called Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET). The patient presented with a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), pain, psychosocial indicators of stress and anxiety, and a score of 4 on the ACE-Q (Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire) that is consistent with a predisposition to chronic disease and autoimmune disorders. Glucose levels for this patient were above normal levels (typically between 10-15mmol/L where optimal range is between 4-10mmol/L) for at least two months prior to the 4-week NET intervention period, despite the standard use of conventional antidiabetic medications (insulin injections). The patient exhibited numerous indictors of chronic stress that were hypothesised to be underlying his medical diagnosis and a series of 8 NET treatments over a period of 4 weeks was recommended. Psychometric tests and glucose measurements were recorded at baseline (prior to treatment), 4 weeks (at the conclusion of treatment) and at 8 weeks (4 weeks following the conclusion of treatment). Results show that glucose levels were reduced, and self-reported measures of depression, anxiety, stress, distress and pain all decreased from high and extreme levels to within normal ranges after 4 weeks, with ongoing improvement at 8 weeks. McEwen described the concept of allostatic load and the disruptive effects that cumulative stress can have on both mental and physical health. It is hypothesized that NET reduces allostatic load thereby fortifying homeostasis and the salutogenic stress response mechanisms involved in recovery from chronic illness, possibly via the Psycho-Immune-Neuroendocrine (PINE) network. Further studies with larger sample sizes are required to establish whether these results could be extrapolated to a wider population, however the results of this case suggest that it may be beneficial to consider co-management of T2D with an MBI such as NET.

Abstract
Background Nutritional profiling system (NPS) holds promise as a public health tool for companies to measure product healthiness and for individuals in making healthier food choices. The Meiji NPS for adults specifically targets lifestyle-related diseases prevalent among Japan's adult population, including overweight/obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. This study examined the cross-sectional association between the Meiji NPS for adults Dietary Index (MNfA-DI) and indicators of lifestyle-related diseases in a population. Methods The study comprised 1,272 middle-aged individuals (40-64 years, 50.1% male) who participated in the seventh wave (2010-2012) of the National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging project, with no missing data on three-day dietary records. The MNfA-DI was computed at the individual diet level (accounting for the whole diet) using arithmetic energy-weighted means. A higher MNfA-DI indicated a greater nutritional quality of an individual's overall diet. Lifestyle-related disease indicators included body mass index (BMI, kg/m2), body fat (%), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (mmHg), fasting plasma glucose (mg/dL), HbA1c (%), triglyceride levels (mg/dL), LDL, and HDL cholesterol levels (mg/dL). A multiple regression model was used to assess the association between the MNfA-DI and lifestyle-related disease indicators, adjusting for demographics, socioeconomic status, lifestyle factors, disease history, and energy intake as covariates, depending on the outcome. Results The median (interquartile range) age and MNfA-DI were 53.0 (46.0, 59.0) years and 10.1 (6.0, 14.0) points, respectively. MNfA-DI was negatively associated with body fat [partial regression coefficient (95% confidence interval) -0.04 (-0.07, -0.01)], diastolic blood pressure [-0.08 (-0.17, -0.002)], fasting plasma glucose [-0.18 (-0.33, -0.01)], and triglyceride [-1.36 (-2.16, -0.55)]. Additionally, MNfA-DI was also associated with almost indicators (except for LDL and HDL cholesterol) among participants with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m2. Conclusion These findings suggest that the Meiji NPS for adults could be associated with a lower risk of lifestyle-related diseases. In addition, from a public health nutrition perspective, the Meiji NPS for adults may be useful to assess the food healthiness of the adult population.

Abstract
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) represents the primary cause of mortality among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). In this population, High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) particles exhibit abnormalities in number, composition, and function, culminating in diminished anti-atherosclerotic capabilities despite normal HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations. Hyperglycemic conditions contribute to these alterations in HDL kinetics, composition, and function, causing T2DM patients' HDL particles to exhibit decreased concentrations of diverse lipid species and proteins. Treatment of hyperglycemia has the potential to correct abnormal HDL particle attributes in T2DM; however, pharmacological interventions, including metformin and thiazolidinediones, yield inconsistent outcomes with respect to HDL-C concentrations and functionality. Despite numerous attempts with diverse drugs, pharmacologically augmenting HDL-C levels has not resulted in clinical benefits in mitigating ASCVD risk. In contrast, reducing Low Density Lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) via statins and ezetimibe has demonstrated significant efficacy in curtailing CVD risk among T2DM individuals. Promising results have been observed in animal models and early-phase trials utilizing recombinant HDL and Lecitin Cholesterol Acyl Transferase (LCAT) -enhancing agents, but the evaluation of their efficacy and safety in large-scale clinical trials is ongoing. While aberrant HDL metabolism constitutes a prevalent aspect of dyslipidemia in T2DM, HDL cholesterol concentrations and composition no longer offer valuable insights for informing therapeutic decisions. Nevertheless, HDL metabolism remains a critical research area in T2DM, necessitating further investigation to elucidate the role of HDL particles in the development of diabetes-associated complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on serum glucose levels of pregnant women. DESIGN A retrospective analysis of O'Sullivan test in pregnant women who underwent COVID-19 lockdown compared to controls. SITE: Poniente Primary Health Care center in Córdoba (Spain). PARTICIPANTS 235 pregnant women from 23+0 to 25+0 weeks of gestation without diabetes mellitus. INTERVENTIONS Gestational diabetes mellitus screening with O'Sullivan test and 3-h oral glucose tolerance test. MAIN MEASUREMENTS Pregnant women who underwent gestational diabetes mellitus screening with O'Sullivan test before (control group) and during COVID-19 Lockdown (Lockdown group) in Córdoba (Spain) were investigated. Lockdown group was divided in early and late lockdown. An additional, control group from data of the same months of the Lockdown in the previous year were recorded to discarded seasonally (adjusted seasonally control) this group was also divided in early and late seasonally adjusted. A logistic regression model for O'Sullivan test has been performed to analyze potential cofounders. Kolgomorov-Smirnov and Kruskal-Wallis test comparing pregnant women who underwent COVID-19 lockdown with the two types of controls. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were found in serum glucose after O'Sullivan test between lockdown group and control group (123.51±26.02mg/dL and 112.86±31.28mg/dL; p=0.017). When early lockdown group and control group were compared no differences were found (119.64±26.18mg/dL vs. 112.86±31.28mg/dL; p>0.05) whereas differences were observed in late lockdown group and control group (127.22±25.59mg/dL vs. 112.86±31.28mg/dL; p=0.009). Statistical trends were also found between lockdown group and seasonally adjusted group and between lockdown and late seasonally adjusted group (p=0.089). A higher proportion of positive O'Suvillan pregnant women who were subsequently diagnosed with GDM were found in lockdown group compared to the seasonally adjusted control group (60% vs. 26.06% respectively; p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The COVID-19 lockdown was associated with an increase in serum glucose levels after the O'Sullivan test as well as a higher GDM diagnosis risk in pregnant women. The findings of our study emphasize the essential requirement for comprehensive maternal services and the accessibility to community's health assets during future lockdown scenarios to pregnant women.

Abstract
DL-Lactic acid and D-glucose are important human health indicators. Their aberrant levels in body fluids may indicate a variety of human pathological conditions, suggesting an urgent need of daily monitoring. However, simultaneous and rapid analysis of DL-lactic acid and D-glucose using a sole but simple sensing system has never been reported. Here, an engineered Mycobacterium smegmatis porin A (MspA) nanopore is used to simultaneously identify DL-lactic acid and D-glucose. Highly distinguishable nanopore event features are reported. Assisted with a custom machine learning algorithm, direct identification of DL-lactic acid and D-glucose is performed with human serum, demonstrating its sensing reliability against complex and heterogeneous samples. This sensing strategy is further applied in the analysis of different animal serum samples, according to which gluconic acid is further identified. The serum samples from different animals report distinguishable levels of DL-lactic acid, D-glucose and gluconic acid, suggesting its potential applications in agricultural science and breeding industry. This sensing strategy is generally direct, rapid, economic and requires only ≈µL of input serum, suitable for point of care testing (POCT) applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The A allele of rs373863828 in CREB3 regulatory factor is associated with high Body Mass Index, but lower odds of type 2 diabetes. These associations have been replicated elsewhere, but to date all studies have been cross-sectional. Our aims were (1) to describe the development of type 2 diabetes and change in fasting glucose between 2010 and 2018 among a longitudinal cohort of adult Samoans without type 2 diabetes or who were not using diabetes medications at baseline, and (2) to examine associations between fasting glucose rate-of-change (mmol/L per year) and the A allele of rs373863828. METHODS We describe and test differences in fasting glucose, the development of type 2 diabetes, body mass index, age, smoking status, physical activity, urbanicity of residence, and household asset scores between 2010 and 2018 among a cohort of n = 401 adult Samoans, selected to have a ~2:2:1 ratio of GG:AG: AA rs373863828 genotypes. Multivariate linear regression was used to test whether fasting glucose rate-of-change was associated with rs373863828 genotype, and other baseline variables. RESULTS By 2018, fasting glucose and BMI significantly increased among all genotype groups, and a substantial portion of the sample developed type 2 diabetes mellitus. The A allele was associated with a lower fasting glucose rate-of-change (β = -0.05 mmol/L/year per allele, p = 0.058 among women; β = -0.004 mmol/L/year per allele, p = 0.863 among men), after accounting for baseline variables. Mean fasting glucose and mean BMI increased over an eight-year period and a substantial number of individuals developed type 2 diabetes by 2018. However, fasting glucose rate-of-change, and type 2 diabetes development was lower among females with AG and AA genotypes. CONCLUSIONS Further research is needed to understand the effect of the A allele on fasting glucose and type 2 diabetes development. Based on our observations that other risk factors increased over time, we advocate for the continued promotion for diabetes prevention and treatment programming, and the reduction of modifiable risk factors, in this setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND MiRNA let7d-5p has been recently reported to be abnormally expressed in diabetes-associated atherosclerosis (AS). However, it still remains unknown how let7d-5p contributes to the process of atherosclerosis. METHODS Twenty fresh tissues and a total of 28 wax block specimens from carotid endarterectomy procedures were obtained from the Luoyang Central Hospital affiliated to Zhengzhou University. The expression of let7d-5p was assessed using quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR). A series of in vitro experiments was used to determine the roles of let7d-5p knockdown and overexpression in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). RESULTS We discovered that the carotid plaques from diabetic patients had lower expression levels of miR let7d-5p. In VSMCs, the expression of miRNA let7d-5p was significantly lower in high glucose conditions compared with low glucose situations. The proliferation and migration of VSMCs were also inhibited by the overexpression of let7d-5p, whereas the opposite was true when let7d-5p was inhibited, according to gain and loss of function studies. Mechanically, let7d-5p might activate the GSK3β/β-catenin signaling pathway via binding to the high mobility group AT-Hook 2 (HMGA2) mRNA in VSMCs. Additionally, GLP-1RA liraglutide may prevent the migration and proliferation of VSMCs by raising let7d-5p levels. CONCLUSIONS High glucose stimulated the proliferation and migration of VSMCs by regulating the let7d-5p/HMGA2/GSK3β/β-catenin pathway, and liraglutide may slow atherosclerosis by increasing the levels of miR let7d-5p.

Abstract
The worldwide incidence of prediabetes/type 2 has continued to rise the last 40 years. In the same period, the mean daily energy intake has increased, and the quality of food has significantly changed. The chronic exposure of pancreatic β-cells to calorie excess (excessive energy intake) and food additives may increase pancreatic insulin secretion, decrease insulin pulses and/or reduce hepatic insulin clearance, thereby causing chronic hyperinsulinemia and peripheral insulin resistance. Chronic calorie excess and hyperinsulinemia may promote lipogenesis, inhibit lipolysis and increase lipid storage in adipocytes. In addition, calorie excess and hyperinsulinemia can induce insulin resistance and contribute to progressive and excessive ectopic fat accumulation in the liver and pancreas by the conversion of excess calories into fat. The personal fat threshold hypothesis proposes that in susceptible individuals, excessive ectopic fat accumulation may eventually lead to hepatic insulin receptor resistance, the loss of pancreatic insulin secretion, hyperglycemia and the development of frank type 2 diabetes. Thus, type 2 diabetes seems (partly) to be caused by hyperinsulinemia-induced excess ectopic fat accumulation in the liver and pancreas. Increasing evidence further shows that interventions (hypocaloric diet and/or bariatric surgery), which remove ectopic fat in the liver and pancreas by introducing a negative energy balance, can normalize insulin secretion and glucose tolerance and induce the sustained biochemical remission of type 2 diabetes. This pathophysiological insight may have major implications and may cause a paradigm shift in the management of type 2 diabetes: avoiding/reducing ectopic fat accumulation in the liver and pancreas may both be essential to prevent and cure type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
The growing requirement for real-time monitoring of health factors such as heart rate, temperature, and blood glucose levels has resulted in an increase in demand for electrochemical sensors. This study focuses on enzyme-free glucose sensors based on 2D-MoS2 nanostructures explored by simple hydrothermal route. The 2D-MoS2 nanostructures were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS techniques and were immobilized at GCE to obtain MoS2-GCE interface. The fabricated interface was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy which shows less charge transfer resistance and demonstrated superior electrocatalytic properties of the modified surface. The sensing interface was applied for the detection of glucose using amperometry. The MoS2-GCE-sensing interface responded effectively as a nonenzymatic glucose sensor (NEGS) over a linearity range of 0.01-0.20 μM with a very low detection limit of 22.08 ng mL-1. This study demonstrates an easy method for developing a MoS2-GCE interface, providing a potential option for the construction of flexible and disposable nonenzymatic glucose sensors (NEGS). Moreover, the fabricated MoS2-GCE electrode precisely detected glucose molecules in real blood serum and urine samples of diabetic and nondiabetic persons. These findings suggest that 2D-MoS2 nanostructured materials show considerable promise as a possible option for hyperglycemia detection and therapy. Furthermore, the development of NEGS might create new prospects in the glucometer industry.

Abstract
Plasma fasting glucose (FG) levels play a pivotal role in the diagnosis of prediabetes and diabetes worldwide. Here we investigated FG values using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices in nondiabetic adults aged 40-70 years. FG was measured during 59,565 morning windows of 8,315 individuals (7.16 ± 3.17 days per participant). Mean FG was 96.2 ± 12.87 mg dl-1, rising by 0.234 mg dl-1 per year with age. Intraperson, day-to-day variability expressed as FG standard deviation was 7.52 ± 4.31 mg dl-1. As there are currently no CGM-based criteria for diabetes diagnosis, we analyzed the potential implications of this variability on the classification of glycemic status based on current plasma FG-based diagnostic guidelines. Among 5,328 individuals who would have been considered to have normal FG based on the first FG measurement, 40% and 3% would have been reclassified as having glucose in the prediabetes and diabetes ranges, respectively, based on sequential measurements throughout the study. Finally, we revealed associations between mean FG and various clinical measures. Our findings suggest that careful consideration is necessary when interpreting FG as substantial intraperson variability exists and highlight the potential impact of using CGM data to refine glycemic status assessment.

Abstract
AIM High fasting plasma glucose (HFPG) is a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Few studies have evaluated the CVD burden attributable to HFPG globally. It is urgent to investigate the current epidemiological pattern and past trends of CVD attributable to HFPG. METHODS We used the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019 to describe the CVD burden attributable to HFPG in 2019 and evaluate temporal trends between 1990 and 2019. RESULTS Global Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) cases and death cases of HFPG-related CVD were approximately 72,591,163 and 3,763,298 in 2019, with an increase of 107.4 % and 114.6 % compared with 1990, respectively. Despite the increases, the age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDAR) and age-standardized death rate (ASDR) of HFPG-related CVD contributed to 895.2 per 100,000 people and 48.4 per 100,000 people in 2019, with an estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of -0.22 and -0.31, respectively, from 1990. The highest ASDAR and ASDR of HFPG-related CVD were in 2019 observed in the low-middle SDI (Socio-demographic Index) and middle-SDI regions. Low SDI and some low-middle SDI regions showed an increase in ASDAR and ASDR of HFPG-related CVD from 1990 to 2019. Males are more affected by HFPG-related CVD than females across all years. The CVD burden attributable to HFPG in the elderly are higher than those in the young in 2019. The main causes of the global CVD burden attributable to HFPG in 2019 were ischemic heart disease, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease. CONCLUSION The CVD burden attributable to HFPG remains a serious public health challenge threatening human health worldwide. It is necessary to develop more targeted and specific strategies to reduce CVD burden attributable to HFPG, especially in males, elderly, and lower SDI regions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and liver cirrhosis are significant clinical concerns, especially among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, in China, there is a paucity of reliable evidence detailing the characteristics of NAFLD and liver cirrhosis in T2DM. Furthermore, the relationship between blood glucose levels and NAFLD prevalence remains unclear. METHODS Data from the Shanghai Suburban Adult Cohort and Biobank were analyzed, including 6621 participants with T2DM. NAFLD was diagnosed by ultrasonography and liver cirrhosis was performed according to the health information systems. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline analysis were used to explore the potential risk factors for NAFLD and liver cirrhosis. RESULTS The prevalence of NAFLD was 59.36%, and liver cirrhosis was 1.43% among T2DM patients. In these patients, factors like age, being female, marital status, and obesity significantly increased the risk of NAFLD. Specifically, obesity had a strong positive association with NAFLD (odds ratio [OR] = 4.70, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.13-5.34). The higher glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) quartile was associated with a heightened NAFLD risk compared to the lowest quartile (all p < .001). The HbA1c-NAFLD relationship displayed a linear that mimicked an inverted L-shaped pattern. A significant positive association existed between HbA1c levels and NAFLD for HbA1c <8.00% (OR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.44-1.75), but this was not observed for HbA1c >8.00% (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 0.92-1.15). CONCLUSION Systematic screening for NAFLD is essential in T2DM patients, especially with poor glucose control and obesity in female.

Abstract
Estrogen receptor α (ERα) plays a crucial role in regulating glucose and energy homeostasis during type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here we find a ligand-independent effect of ERα on the regulation of glucose homeostasis. Deficiency of ERα in the liver impairs glucose homeostasis in male, female, and ovariectomized (OVX) female mice. Mechanistic studies reveal that ERα promotes hepatic insulin sensitivity by suppressing ubiquitination-induced IRS1 degradation. The ERα 1-280 domain mediates the ligand-independent effect of ERα on insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, we identify a peptide based on ERα 1-280 domain and find that ERα-derived peptide increases IRS1 stability and enhances insulin sensitivity. Importantly, administration of ERα-derived peptide into obese mice significantly improves glucose homeostasis and serum lipid profiles. These findings pave the way for the therapeutic intervention of T2DM by targeting the ligand-independent effect of ERα and indicate that ERα-derived peptide is a potential insulin sensitizer for the treatment of T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutrition recommendations in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are to consume rye or integral bread instead of white bread. A positive effect on glucoregulation has been achieved by enriching food with various biologically active substances of herbal origin, so we formulated an herbal mixture that can be used as a supplement for a special type of bread (STB) to achieve better effects on postprandial glucose and insulin levels in patients with T2DM. AIM To compare organoleptic characteristics and effects of two types of bread on postprandial glucose and insulin levels in T2DM patients. METHODS This trial included 97 patients with T2DM. A parallel group of 16 healthy subjects was also investigated. All participants were given 50 g of rye bread and the same amount of a STB with an herbal mixture on 2 consecutive days. Postprandial blood glucose and insulin levels were compared at the 30th, 60th, 90th and 120th min. A questionnaire was used for subjective estimation of the organoleptic and satiety features of the two types of bread. RESULTS Compared to patients who consumed rye bread, significantly lower postprandial blood glucose and insulin concentrations were found in T2DM patients who consumed STB. No relevant differences were found among the healthy subjects. Subjectively estimated organoleptic and satiety characteristics are better for STB than for rye bread. CONCLUSION STB have better effects than rye bread on postprandial glucoregulation in T2DM patients. Subjectively estimated organoleptic and satiety characteristics are better for STB than for rye bread. Therefore, STB can be recommended for nutrition in T2DM patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs) is increasing in sub-Saharan Africa and represents a serious public health issue. Accurate data are required to implement adapted prevention programs and healthcare strategies. Thus, the aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence rates of CMRFs according to the level of urbanization, age and gender in Gabon. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in northern (Bitam), western coast (Libreville, Melen) and southeast (Koulamoutou) areas of Gabon using the World Health Organization's (WHO) stepwise approach for the surveillance of chronic disease risk factors. Participants over 18 years of age, without known underlying disease, living in rural and urban areas of Gabon were included. Sociodemographic, biological, and behavioral data were collected. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to identify the CMRFs. RESULTS Of the 978 participants, 499 lived in urban and 479 in rural areas. Their median age was 38[28-50] years. Tobacco (26.1% vs 6.2%; p < 0.01) and excessive alcohol consumption (19.4% vs 9.6%; p < 0.01) predominated in rural than in urban areas, respectively. Urban dwellers had more often insufficient physical activity than rural people (29.5% vs 16.3%; p < 0.01). In total, 79.9% of participants aged under 54 years had a high blood pressure;10.6% of the younger participants had pre-hypertension. Metabolic syndrome was more frequent in women (21.7%) than in men (10.0%) (p < 0.01); 6.4% of men and 2.5% of women had a high Framingham score (p = 0.03). Finally, 54.0% of the participants had three or four CMRFs. The multivariate analysis showed that men were more likely to be smokers and to be at risk of pre-hypertension or high blood pressure (p < 0.01). Women were more likely to be obese or to have a metabolic syndrome (p < 0.01). Living in urban areas was also a risk factor for hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and high LDL cholesterol level. CONCLUSION The prevalence of CMRFs was high in the study population. Disparities were observed according to urban and rural areas, gender and age. National prevention and healthcare strategies for cardiometabolic diseases in Gabon should consider these observed differences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare the sex-dependent intergenerational effects of insulin, glibenclamide, and metformin on glucose and lipid metabolism in the offspring born to GDM mice. METHODS The murine GDM was induced by high fat diet. The offspring were grouped based on the treatments in maternal mice. ITT and GTT were performed at 4th and 8th weeks of age, respectively. Serum levels of TC, TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C plus hepatic levels of TG and TC, were respectively determined by enzymatic kits. Western blotting was conducted to detect related proteins in the livers from offspring. RESULTS The dyslipidaemia, hepatic lipid abnormality, and insulin insensitivity caused by GDM were persistently normalised in male adult offspring by the respective therapies of insulin, glibenclamide, and metformin during maternal pregnancy. Specifically, the decreases in plasma TC, TG, and LDL-C levels (29%, 37.8%, and 57.7%, respectively, p ˂ .05) and in hepatic lipid contents (TC 31.3% and TG 39.2%, p ˂ .05), the increases in hepatic phosphorylation levels of AKT, CPT1A, PPAR-α, and PPAR-γ (57.1%, 91.7%, 68%, and 173.3%, respectively, p ˂ .05) and the inhibition of G6Pase, PEPCK, and HMGCS1 (35.7%, 68.8%, and 77.3% respectively, p ˂ .05) were still observed in the male offspring born to treated GDM mice from 4th to 8th week of age. Unexpectedly, the aforementioned parameters in female progenies in different groups were not significantly changed compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS Respective treatments in GDM mice during pregnancy with insulin, glibenclamide, and metformin have the long-term persistent effects in male offspring, while female progenies born to untreated dams showed an autonomous inhibition of intergenerational relay of glucose and lipid dysregulation. Our current findings may imply a sex-dependent strategy of medical care for GDM mothers and their offspring.NoveltiesRespective interventions of insulin, glibenclamide, and metformin on dams exerted the persisted effects on male progenies.Therapies of three drugs on dams had the similarly improved effects in offspring.Female offspring autonomously corrected their dysregulated glucose-lipid metabolism caused by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in dams.

Abstract
PURPOSE High fasting plasma glucose (HFPG) has been identified as a risk factor for drug-resistant tuberculosis incidence and mortality. However, the epidemic characteristics of HFPG-attributable multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) remain unclear. We aimed to analyze the global spatial patterns and temporal trends of HFPG-attributable MDR-TB and XDR-TB from 1990 to 2019. METHODS Utilizing data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 project, annual deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of HFPG-attributable MDR-TB and XDR-TB were conducted from 1990 to 2019. Joinpoint regression was employed to quantify trends over time. RESULTS From 1990 to 2019, the deaths and DALYs due to HFPG-attributable MDR-TB and XDR-TB globally showed an overall increasing trend, with a significant increase until 2003 to 2004, followed by a gradual decline or stability thereafter. The low sociodemographic index (SDI) region experienced the most significant increase over the past 30 years. Regionally, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia and Oceania remained the highest burden. Furthermore, there was a sex and age disparity in the burden of HFPG-attributable MDR-TB and XDR-TB, with young males in the 25-34 age group experiencing higher mortality, DALYs burden and a faster increasing trend than females. Interestingly, an increasing trend followed by a stable or decreasing pattern was observed in the ASMR and ASDR of HFPG-attributable MDR-TB and XDR-TB with SDI increasing. CONCLUSION The burden of HFPG-attributable MDR-TB and XDR-TB rose worldwide from 1990 to 2019. These findings emphasize the importance of routine bi-directional screening and integrated management for drug-resistant TB and diabetes.

Abstract
Diabetes serves as a severe chronic disease that severely affects the normal life of human beings. Diabetes causes the complication of diabetic wound dysfunction, which is characterized by sustained inflammation, altered angiogenesis, delayed epithelialization and abnormal secretion of protease. Dang-Gui-Bu-Xue decoction (DBD) is a Chinese traditional medicine that comprises Radix Astragali and Radix Angelicae sinensis and is widely applied in treatment of multiple diseases owing to its functions against inflammation, lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress. Nevertheless, the impact of DBD on diabetic wound healing remains elusive. In this study, we aimed to explore the function of DBD in the regulation of wound healing. We observed that the gavage administration of DBD reduced the wound area, inflammatory infiltration, inflammatory factor levesl, and enhanced granulation tissue formation, wound extracellular matrix (ECM) production, and CD31 accumulation in the diabetic rat wound model, and the co-treatment of gavage administration and the external administration of gauze containing DBD further improved the wound healing effect, while the combination of Notch signaling inhibitor DAPT ((N- [N- (3, 5-difluorophenacetyl)-l-alanyl]-s-phenylglycinet-butyl ester)) could attenuate the improvement. Regarding to the mechanism, the expression levels of Notch1, Delta-like canonical Notch ligand 4 (Dll4), Jagged1, and Hairy Enhancer of Split-1 (Hes1) were increased by DBD, while the treatment of DAPT impaired the effect in the rats. Furthermore, we found that the high glucose (HG)-inhibited viability and tube formation were induced by DBD in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), in which DAPT could reverse this effect. Therefore, we concluded that DBD contributed to wound healing by the activation of Notch signaling. Our finding provides new insight into the potential role of DBD in promoting diabetic wound healing.

Abstract
Advances in soft materials, miniaturized electronics, sensors, stimulators, radios, and battery-free power supplies are resulting in a new generation of fully implantable organ interfaces that leverage volumetric reduction and soft mechanics by eliminating electrochemical power storage. This device class offers the ability to provide high-fidelity readouts of physiological processes, enables stimulation, and allows control over organs to realize new therapeutic and diagnostic paradigms. Driven by seamless integration with connected infrastructure, these devices enable personalized digital medicine. Key to advances are carefully designed material, electrophysical, electrochemical, and electromagnetic systems that form implantables with mechanical properties closely matched to the target organ to deliver functionality that supports high-fidelity sensors and stimulators. The elimination of electrochemical power supplies enables control over device operation, anywhere from acute, to lifetimes matching the target subject with physical dimensions that supports imperceptible operation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the basic building blocks of battery-free organ interfaces and related topics such as implantation, delivery, sterilization, and user acceptance. State of the art examples categorized by organ system and an outlook of interconnection and advanced strategies for computation leveraging the consistent power influx to elevate functionality of this device class over current battery-powered strategies is highlighted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Circular RNAs (circRNAs) function as miRNA sponges by adsorbing microRNAs (miRNAs), thereby regulating messenger RNA (mRNA) expression. The circRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has rarely been explored. A circRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network associated with T2DM was established to help deepen our understanding of the molecular mechanism of and therapeutic targets for T2DM. METHODS Differentially expressed circRNAs (DEcircRNAs), miRNAs (DEmiRNAs), and mRNAs (DEmRNAs) were derived from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) microarray datasets GSE114248, GSE51674 and GSE95849, respectively. A circRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network associated with T2DM and its subnetwork were constructed. The hub genes were screened using a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Finally, a hub gene-related network was constructed. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis were performed. RESULTS The circRNA-miRNA-mRNA network included 9 circRNAs, 24 miRNAs and 320 mRNAs. When four key circRNAs (circMYO9B, circGRAMD1B, circTHAP4 and circTMC7) were chosen, the subnetwork contained 4 circRNAs, 18 miRNAs and 307 mRNAs. Afterwards, 8 hub genes (SIRT1, GNG7, KDR, FOS, SIN3B, STAT1, SP1, and MAPK3) were extracted from the PPI network. GO and KEGG pathway analyses revealed that the network might be involved in oxidative stress responses, regulation of inflammation, neovascularization, endocrine and cancer-related processes, etc. CONCLUSIONS A circRNA-miRNA-hub gene regulatory network was constructed, and the potential functions of the hub genes were analyzed. Four important circRNAs (circMYO9B, circGRAMD1B, circTHAP4 and circTMC7) might be involved in the occurrence and development of T2DM, and this finding provides new insight into the molecular mechanism of and therapeutic targets for T2DM and its complications. Future studies are needed to validate the sponge effects and mechanisms of these 4 circRNAs.

Abstract
People with schizophrenia die prematurely, yet regional differences are unclear. PRISMA 2020-compliant systematic review/random-effects meta-analysis of cohort studies assessing mortality relative risk (RR) versus any control group, and moderators, in people with ICD/DSM-defined schizophrenia, comparing countries and continents. We conducted subgroup, meta-regression analyses, and quality assessment. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes were suicide-, /natural-cause- and other-cause-related mortality. We included 135 studies from Europe (n = 70), North-America (n = 29), Asia (n = 33), Oceania (n = 2), Africa (n = 1). In incident plus prevalent schizophrenia, differences across continents emerged for all-cause mortality (highest in Africa, RR=5.98, 95 %C.I.=4.09-8.74, k = 1, lowest in North-America, RR=2.14, 95 %C.I.=1.92-2.38, k = 16), suicide (highest in Oceania, RR=13.5, 95 %C.I.=10.08-18.07, k = 1, lowest in North-America, RR=4.4, 95 %C.I.=4.07-4.76, k = 6), but not for natural-cause mortality. Europe had the largest association between antipsychotics and lower all-cause mortality/suicide (Asia had the smallest or no significant association, respectively), without differences for natural-cause mortality. Higher country socio-demographic index significantly moderated larger suicide-related and smaller natural-cause-related mortality risk in incident schizophrenia, with reversed associations in prevalent schizophrenia. Antipsychotics had a larger/smaller protective association in incident/prevalent schizophrenia regarding all-cause mortality, and smaller protective association for suicide-related mortality in prevalent schizophrenia. Additional regional differences emerged in incident schizophrenia, across countries, and secondary outcomes. Significant regional differences emerged for all-cause, cause-specific and suicide-related mortality. Natural-cause death was homogeneously increased globally. Moderators differed across countries. Global initiatives are needed to improve physical health in people with schizophrenia, local studies to identify actionable moderators.

Abstract
Metabolic health is characterized by optimal blood glucose, lipids, cholesterol, blood pressure, and adiposity. Alterations in these characteristics may lead to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus or dyslipidemia. Recent evidence suggests that female reproductive characteristics may be overlooked as risk factors that contribute to later metabolic dysfunction. These reproductive traits include the age at menarche, menstrual irregularity, the development of polycystic ovary syndrome, gestational weight change, gestational dysglycemia and dyslipidemia, and the severity and timing of menopausal symptoms. These risk factors may themselves be markers of future dysfunction or may be explained by shared underlying etiologies that promote long-term disease development. Disentangling underlying relationships and identifying potentially modifiable characteristics have an important bearing on therapeutic lifestyle modifications that could ease long-term metabolic burden. Further research that better characterizes associations between reproductive characteristics and metabolic health, clarifies underlying etiologies, and identifies indicators for clinical application is warranted in the prevention and management of metabolic dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between early life stress (ELS) and metabolic risk in healthy young adults and assess the role of health behaviors. METHODS Young adults aged 18 to 40 years ( N = 190) with no medical conditions or medication usage were recruited from the community. Participants with ELS ( N = 113) had a history of childhood maltreatment, and most also experienced parental loss ( n = 88). Controls ( N = 77) had no history of maltreatment or parental loss. Standardized interviews and self-reports assessed demographics, adversity, medical/psychiatric history, and health behaviors. Blood pressure and anthropometrics were measured, and fasting plasma assayed for lipid profiles, glucose, insulin level, and hemoglobin A 1c . We calculated both a clinical cut-point and continuous composite metabolic risk score based on clinical risk factors and the mean of z scores of each measure, respectively. RESULTS ELS was significantly associated with increased clinical cut-point ( β = 0.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.20-1.17, p = .006) and continuous ( β = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.08-0.038, p = .003) composite metabolic risk scores. On sensitivity analysis, the association of ELS with the continuous composite metabolic risk score was reduced to a trend after adjusting for a range of psychosocial and health predictors ( β = 0.18, 95% CI = 0.00-0.36, p = .053), with both diet and college graduate status significant in the model. CONCLUSIONS Healthy young adults with a history of ELS have increased metabolic risk scores as compared with controls. This relationship may be partially due to health behaviors and socioeconomic factors. These findings underline that ELS is an early contributor to metabolic risk.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the renal, cardiovascular, and safety outcomes when sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) were added to insulin therapy in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane libraries for reports published up to Feb 2023. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing SGLT2is and insulin combination therapy (SGLT2is + INS group) with insulin therapy alone (INS group) in T2DM were included. RESULTS Fourteen RCTs involving six thousand one hundred twenty subjects with durations of 12-104 weeks were included. Compared with the insulin group, the SGLT2is + INS group showed decreased glycosylated hemoglobin values and insulin dosages (P < 0.00001). Meanwhile, the SGLT2is + INS group had a reduced urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (UACR) by 25.42 mg/g and uric acid concentration (P = 0.030; P = 0.001, respectively) but the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and renal-related adverse events were unaffected (P = 0.070; P = 0.880, respectively). Blood pressure and body weight were lower in the SGLT2is + INS group (P < 0.01). However, the risk of genital infection was bigger when SGLT2is were added to insulin therapy (P < 0.00001), but the risks of severe hypoglycemia or urinary tract infection were equal between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Adding SGLT2is to insulin therapy in T2DM patients showed better glucose control and decreased albuminuria, uric acid, blood pressure, and body weight without a reduction in the eGFR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While most European Regions perform well in global comparisons, large discrepancies within stroke epidemiological parameters exist across Europe. The objective of this analysis was to evaluate the stroke burden across European regions and countries in 2019 and its difference to 2010. METHODS The GBD 2019 analytical tools were used to evaluate regional and country-specific estimates of incidence, prevalence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life years of stroke for the European Region as defined by the World Health Organization, with its 53 member countries (EU-53) and for European Union as defined in 2019, with its 28 member countries (EU-28), between 2010 and 2019. Results were analyzed at a regional, subregional, and country level. RESULTS In EU-53, the absolute number of incident and prevalent strokes increased by 2% (uncertainty interval [UI], 0%-4%), from 1 767 280 to 1 802 559 new cases, and by 4% (UI, 3%-5%) between 2010 and 2019, respectively. In EU-28, the absolute number of prevalent strokes and stroke-related deaths increased by 4% (UI, 2%-5%) and by 6% (UI, 1%-10%), respectively. All-stroke age-standardized mortality rates, however, decreased by 18% (UI, -22% to -14%), from 82 to 67 per 100 000 people in the EU-53, and by 15% (UI, -18% to -11%), from 49.3 to 42.0 per 100 000 people in EU-28. Despite most countries presenting reductions in age-adjusted incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life year rates, these rates remained 1.4×, 1.2×, 1.6×, and 1.7× higher in EU-53 in comparison to the EU-28. CONCLUSIONS EU-53 showed a 2% increase in incident strokes, while they remained stable in EU-28. Age-standardized rates were consistently lower for all-stroke burden parameters in EU-28 in comparison to EU-53, and huge discrepancies in incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-year rates were observed between individual countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A variety of chronic diseases are affected by diet. To our knowledge, few studies have investigated the relationship between dietary patterns and renal impairment in individuals with diabetes within an Asian population. This study aimed to assess the relationship between renal impairment and dietary patterns in individuals with diabetes within a Chinese population. METHODS In this cross-sectional survey, we analysed data on 1522 participants with diabetes aged 18 years or older who took part in the China National Diabetic Chronic Complications Study. We utilised the Chinese Diabetes Complications Questionnaire, including the semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQFFQ). We identified three dietary patterns using factor analysis: Chinese traditional, healthy and plant-based dietary patterns, and these dietary patterns were used to classify participants into four groups based on the quartiles of their scores. A decrease in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR; <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 ) and an increase in the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR; ≥3 mg/mmol) were used as indicators of renal impairment. Binary logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of the highest quartile (Q4: high intake levels of each dietary pattern) for renal impairment compared to the lowest quartile (Q1: low intake levels of each dietary pattern). RESULTS Among the 1522 participants, there was a 5.5% prevalence of low eGFR, with prevalence rates of 5.2% in men and 5.9% in women, yet the prevalence of albuminuria was as high as 47.9%. After adjusting for confounders, participants in Q4 of the plant-based dietary pattern had a smaller OR for renal impairment than those in Q1. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrated that a plant-based dietary pattern is associated with a reduced risk of renal impairment in a population with diabetes.

Abstract
Deficient wound healing is frequently observed in patients diagnosed with diabetes, a clinical complication that compromises mobility and leads to limb amputation, decreasing patient autonomy and family lifestyle. Fibroblasts are crucial for secreting the extracellular matrix (ECM) to pave the wound site for endothelial and keratinocyte regeneration. The biosynthetic pathways involved in collagen production and crosslinking are intimately related to fibroblast redox homeostasis. In this study, two sets of human dermic fibroblasts were cultured in normal (5 mM) and high (25 mM)-glucose conditions in the presence of 1 µM selenium, as sodium selenite (inorganic) and the two selenium amino acids (organic), Se-cysteine and Se-methionine, for ten days. We investigated the ultrastructural changes in the secreted ECM induced by these conditions using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, we evaluated the redox impact of these three compounds by measuring the basal state and real-time responses of the thiol-based HyPer biosensor expressed in the cytoplasm of these fibroblasts. Our results indicate that selenium compound supplementation pushed the redox equilibrium towards a more oxidative tone in both sets of fibroblasts, and this effect was independent of the type of selenium. The kinetic analysis of biosensor responses allowed us to identify Se-cysteine as the only compound that simultaneously improved the sensitivity to oxidative stimuli and augmented the disulfide bond reduction rate in high-glucose-cultured fibroblasts. The redox response profiles showed no clear association with the ultrastructural changes observed in matrix fibers secreted by selenium-treated fibroblasts. However, we found that selenium supplementation improved the ECM secreted by high-glucose-cultured fibroblasts according to endothelial migration assessed with a wound healing assay. Direct application of sodium selenite and Se-cysteine on purified collagen fibers subjected to glycation also improved cellular migration, suggesting that these selenium compounds avoid the undesired effect of glycation.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common diseases all over the world. The effect of this endocrine disease on body systems cannot be ignored, where its oral side effects are well distinguished. As this disease incident is increasing dramatically, it is essential for the health care providers to be fully aware of the disease diagnosis, management and to deal with it in a full confident. This review discusses the disease itself, its complications, methods of diagnosis as well as its management. Furthermore, oral manifestations and dental considerations that should be followed when treating patients with diabetes mellitus have been discussed in this review.

Abstract
Background The complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) continue to cause significant morbidity and mortality, resulting in a substantial economic burden on both individual patients and society. The adoption of self-care practices leads to enhanced glycemic control, decreased complications, and an elevated quality of life. This study aimed to examine self-care activities and their association with glycemic control among individuals with diabetes. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 150 previously diagnosed T2DM patients who visited the tertiary care hospital in Perambalur, Tamilnadu, India, from March 2023 to May 2023. The collection of data involved conducting a semi-structured interview using the diabetes self-management questionnaire (DSMQ) over an eight-week period. Following the input of the data into MS Excel (Microsoft® Corp., Redmond, WA), SPSS Statistics version 26.0 (IBM Corp. Released 2019. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp) was used for data analysis. Results The mean age of the patients was 58.35±11.97 years, and 54.7% (n=82) of them were male. Nearly 65% of diabetic patients (n=98) were on orally administered antihyperglycemic agents. Fifty-nine percent (n=89) of the patients were observed to possess self-care behaviors that met the criteria for adequacy, as the DSMQ scores were dichotomized into "adequate" (≥6) and "inadequate" (<6) categories. We observed that 65% (n=98) of the patients had uncontrolled T2DM, characterized by an HbA1C level above 7.5%. Out of the four subscales of self-care behaviors assessed in this study, "glucose management" scored the highest (5.27±1.30), followed by "dietary control" (5.09±1.53), "healthcare use" (4.86±1.50), and "physical activity" (3.27±1.42). The proportion of diabetic patients who had adequate self-management (55%, n=49) had better glycemic control compared to diabetic patients who had inadequate self-management (4.91%, n=3), and this difference in proportion was statistically significant by the chi-square test (p-value 0.001). Similarly, a statistically significant association was noted between glycemic control and the subscales of DSMQ, namely glucose management, dietary control, physical activity, and healthcare utilization. Conclusion The findings in this study indicate that a noticeable proportion of T2DM patients practice inadequate self-care behaviors. According to the DSMQ, diabetic patients with adequate self-management had better glycemic control than diabetic patients with inadequate self-management. According to this research, patients with good glycemic control also tend to exercise better self-care management and show a greater concern for their illness.

Abstract
Objectives: To develop a questionnaire for evaluating the factors hindering social participation in older patients with diabetes (the Social Participation Barriers in Patients with Diabetes [SPBD] questionnaire) and assess its reliability and validity. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. This study included outpatients aged ≥60 years having diabetes and undergoing treatment at the Ise Redcross Hospital. A draft questionnaire consisting of 20 questions was developed with reference to previous studies. Logistic regression analysis was conducted, and Cronbach's alpha coefficient was calculated. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to test construct validity. Pearson's correlation coefficients between SPBD scores and frailty scores, social frailty scores and frequency of outings were calculated. Results: Overall, 353 patients were included in the analysis. After questions without an association in the logistic regression analysis were excluded and results of the exploratory factor analyses were obtained, 10 questions were excluded. As a result, we created a 10-item SPBD questionnaire. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was .87. The SPBD score was significantly associated with frequency of going out, and frailty. Conclusions: We created an SPBD questionnaire to assess barriers to social participation in older adult patients with diabetes. This study indicated the validity and reliability of the questionnaire.

Abstract
AIMS To assess the long-term risk of developing type 2 diabetes in patients with obesity who have undergone gastric bypass surgery compared to non-operated patients with obesity and the general population. METHODS This study included 71,495 patients aged 20-65 years with a principal diagnosis of obesity in the Swedish Patient Register in 2001-2013. Of these, 23,099 had undergone gastric bypass and 32,435 had not. Each patient was matched by age, sex and geographic region with two controls from the general population without obesity diagnosis, i.e., 44,735 controls for the gastric bypass cohort and 62,522 controls for the non-operated cohort with obesity. Operated and non-operated patients with obesity were also directly compared using Cox regression analysis, providing hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) adjusted for age, education, and sex. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 4.3 years (interquartile range [IQR] 2.4, 7.0 years), 3792 (11.7%) non-operated patients with obesity developed type 2 diabetes (incidence rate 22.8/1000 person-years, 95% CI 22.1-23.6) compared to 394 (1.7%) among gastric bypass patients (incidence rate 4.0/1000 person-years, 95% CI 3.6-4.5). The latter incidence was comparable to population controls (3.5/1000 person-years, 95% CI 3.2-3.8). Gastric bypass patients had 85% lower risk of diabetes compared to non-operated patients with obesity during the first six years of follow-up (HR 0.15; 95% CI 0.13-0.17). CONCLUSION Gastric bypass surgery for obesity seems to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes to levels similar to that of the general population during the first six years of follow-up but not thereafter.

Abstract
Ipomoea batatas L. (IBL) has gained significant popularity as a complementary therapy or herbal medicine in the treatment of anti-diabetes. This review seeks to explore the mechanism by which flavonoid compounds derived from IBL exert their anti-diabetic effects through the activation of GLP-1. The review article refers to the PRISMA guidelines. In order to carry out the literature search, electronic databases such as Science Direct, Crossref, Scopus, and Pubmed were utilized. The search query was based on specific keywords, including Ipomoea batatas OR sweet potato AND anti-diabetic OR hypoglycemic. After searching the databases, we found 1055 articles, but only 32 met the criteria for further review. IBL contains various compounds, including phenolic acid, flavonols, flavanols, flavones, and anthocyanins, which exhibit activity against anti-diabetes. Flavonols, flavanols, and flavones belong to a group of flavonoids that possess the ability to form complexes with AlCl3 and Ca2+. The intracellular L cells effectively retain Ca2+, leading to the subsequent release of GLP-1. Flavonols, flavones, and flavone groups have been found to strongly interact with DPP-IV, which inhibits the degradation of GLP-1. The anti-diabetic activity of IBL is attributed to the mechanism that effectively increases the duration of GLP-1 in the systemic system, thereby prolonging its half-life.

Abstract
Dexmedetomidine (DEX), a highly selective alpha2-adrenoceptors agonist, is not only a sedative drug used during mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit but also a cardio-protective drug against ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Numerous preclinical in vivo and ex vivo studies, mostly evaluating the effect of DEX pretreatment in healthy rodents, have shown the efficacy of DEX in protecting the hearts from IRI. However, whether DEX can maintain its cardio-protective effect in hearts with comorbidities such as diabetes has not been fully elucidated. Multiple clinical trials have reported promising results, showing that pretreatment with DEX can attenuate cardiac damage in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. However, evidence of the post-treatment effects of DEX in clinical practice remains limited. In this narrative review, we summarize the previously reported evidence of DEX-induced cardio-protection against IRI and clarify the condition of the hearts and the timing of DEX administration that has not been tested. With further investigations evaluating these knowledge gaps, the use of DEX as a cardio-protective drug could be further facilitated in the management of patients undergoing cardiac surgery and might be considered in a broader area of clinical settings beyond cardiac surgery, including patients with acute myocardial infarction.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION High glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) variability has been reported to be linked with cardiovascular events in type 2 diabetes patients. Only a few studies have been carried out on Asian patients. This study aimed to investigate the association of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in Asian patients by performing a post-hoc analysis of a multicenter, prospective, observational study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes patients were retrieved from a multicenter national registry entitled "CORE-Thailand study." The primary outcome was 4P-MACE (major adverse cardiovascular events, including non-fatal myocardial infarction, heart failure hospitalization, non-fatal stroke and all-cause death). Patients were stratified according to quartiles of HbA1c standard deviation. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate the association of HbA1c variability with incident cardiovascular disease. RESULTS A total of 3,811 patients with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes were included. The median follow-up duration was 54 months. In the fully adjusted model, the highest quartile of HbA1c variability showed a statistically significant association with 4P-MACE (hazard ratio [HR] 2.77, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.77-4.35), fatal and non-fatal myocardial infarction (HR 6.91, 95% CI 1.90-25.12), hospitalization for heart failure (HR 3.34, 95% CI 1.20-9.26) and all-cause death (HR 3.10, 95% CI 1.72-5.57). All these outcomes were statistically significantly different among four quartiles of HbA1c (log-rank P-value <0.05). Fatal and non-fatal stroke showed no statistically significant association with high HbA1c variability. CONCLUSION High HbA1c variability in the highest quartile showed a statistically significant association with multiple adverse cardiovascular events in an Asian population. Minimizing HbA1c fluctuation during long-term follow up should be another important objective for type 2 diabetes patients.

Abstract
Purpose Describing the trends of metabolic risk factors (MRFs) in the elderly population. Methods We used modeled data from previous comprehensive systematic reviews for MRFs among adults aged ≥ 60 years. Two stages of age-specific Spatio-temporal modeling and Gaussian process regression were used to estimate the mean of MRFs. We used crosswalk modeling to estimate the prevalence of elevated and raised Total cholesterol (TC), overweight/obesity and obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Estimates were analyzed based on combinations of sex, age, year, and province from 1990 to 2016. Results Comparing prevalence estimates from 2016 with those of 1990, in the elderly population, the age-standardized prevalence of overweight/obesity, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension increased, conversely, the prevalence of hypercholesteremia decreased. The prevalence of hypertension increased about 141.5% and 129.9% in men and women respectively. The age-standardized prevalence of diabetes increased about 109.5% in females, and 116.0% in males. Prevalence of elevated TC at the national level decreased to 67.4% (64.1-70.4) in women and to 51.1% (47.5-54.8) in men. These findings were almost shown across provinces. In general, the northern and western provinces had the highest prevalence of overweight/obesity in women in 2016. Conclusion The rising prevalence of most MRFs, as well as the greater prevalence and mean of all MRFs in women, necessitate effective public health policies to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases and run preventive programs. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the correlation between sleep duration and type II diabetes in adults. METHOD Computer databases searches were carried out through October 1, 2022, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science. Relevant literature was collected, and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and extracted data were used to exclude studies and evaluate quality on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.4.1 software with random/fixed effects models. RESULTS A total of 5 studies with 74,226 subjects (31,611 in the male study group, 42,615 in the female study group) were included. The meta-analysis revealed that women with long sleep duration (LSD) have a higher risk for developing type II diabetes than men, OR = 0.70; 95% CI 0.59-0.84, Z = 4.00 and P < 0.001. Men with short sleep duration (SSD) tended to have a higher risk in developing type II diabetes than women though the difference between men and women did not reach statistical significance, OR = 1.09, 95% CI 0.73-1.62, Z = 0.42 and P = 0.68. Further subgroup analysis by regional populations suggested that men in Europe and America with SSD had a higher risk of type II diabetes OR = 1.52, 95% CI 1.04-2.21, Z = 2.18 and P = 0.03. CONCLUSION Women with LSD may have a higher risk for type II diabetes, and men in Europe and America with SSD may have a higher risk for type II diabetes than men of other regions.

Abstract
Ferroptosis is closely associated with the development of disease in the body. However, there are few studies on ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) in obesity. Therefore, key genes and signalling pathways related to ferroptosis in obesity were screened. Briefly, the RNA sequencing data of obesity and the non-obesity human samples and 259 FRGs were downloaded from GEO database and FerrDb database, respectively. The obesity-related module genes were firstly screened by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and crossed with differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of obesity/normal samples and FRGs to obtain obesity-ferroptosis related (OFR) DEGs. Then, key genes were screened by PPI network. Next, the correlation of key genes and differential immune cells between obesity and normal samples were further explored by immune infiltration analysis. Finally, microRNA (miRNA)-messenger RNA (mRNA), transcription factor (TF)-mRNA networks and drug-gene interaction networks were constructed. As a result, 17 OFR DEGs were obtained, which mainly participated in processes such as lipid metabolism or adipocyte differentiation. The 4 key genes, STAT3, IL-6, PTGS2, and VEGFA, constituted the network. M2 macrophages, T cells CD8, mast cells activated, and T cells CD4 memory resting had significant differences between obesity and normal samples. Moreover, 51 miRNAs and 164 drugs were predicted for 4 key genes. All in all, this study has screened 4 FRGs, including IL-6, VEGFA, STAT3, and PTGS2, in obesity patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetic Mellitus is characterized by a lack or failure of insulin to bind to its target receptor or failure of the pancreas to yield insulin. This study evaluated the antihyperglycemic activity of 14-deoxy, 11, 12-didehydro andrographolide on streptozotocin-nicotinamide-induced type 2 diabetic rats. Diabetic conditions were induced by administering streptozotocin at a dosage of 45 mg/kg body weight and nicotinamide at a dosage of 110 mg/kg body weight through intraperitoneal injection. MATERIALS AND METHODS Diabetic-induced rats were treated with 14-deoxy, 11, 12-didehydro andrographolide concentrations between 10 and 500 mg/kg body weight. The blood glucose level and body weight of the rats were periodically examined. The pancreas was isolated and the histopathological staining was performed after making fine sections of the pancreas using a microtome. The influence of 14-deoxy, 11, 12-didehydro andrographolide on the expression level of various insulin signaling cascades was determined with q-PCR and western blotting. RESULTS The blood glucose level of the diabetic-induced rats was significantly (p < 0.05) higher when compared with the control group and resulted in a drop in the blood glucose level of the diabetic rats. Oral glucose level was also reduced in the treatment group and no significant reduction was noted in the untreated. The lipid profiling revealed that the atherogenic index and cholesterol ratio was increased in the diabetic group over the control group. Upregulation of the insulin cascades like IRTK and GLUT4 was observed by the q-PCR and upregulation of GLUT4 and IR-β was observed by the western blot analysis. CONCLUSION Overall, the finding indicates that 14-deoxy, 11, 12-didehydro andrographolide exhibited antihyperglycemic activity by modulating the expression of insulin cascades.

Abstract
Non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors that use functional materials to directly catalyze glucose have shown great promise in diabetes management, food control, and bioprocess inspection owing to the advantages of high sensitivity, long-term stability, and low cost. Recently, in order to produce enhanced electrochemical behavior, significant efforts have been devoted to the preparation of functional materials with regular nanostructure, as it provides high specific surface area and well-defined strong active sites for electrochemical sensing. However, the structure-performance correlation in this field has not been reviewed thoroughly in the literature. This review aims to present a comprehensive report on advanced zero- to three-dimensional nanostructures based on the geometric feature and to discuss in depth their structural effects on enzyme-free electrochemical detection of glucose. It starts by illustrating the sensing principles of nanostructured materials, followed by a detailed discussion on the structural effects related to the features of each dimension. The structure-performance correlation is explored by comparing the performance derived from diverse dimensional architectures, which is beneficial for the better design of regular nanostructure to achieve efficient enzyme-free sensing of glucose. Finally, future directions of non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors to solve emerging challenges and further improve the sensing performance are also proposed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke is a highly prevalent disease that can provoke severe disability. We evaluate a predictive model based on the Minimum Basic Data Set (MBDS) compiled by the Spain Health Ministry, obtained for the period 2008-2012 for patients with ischaemic stroke in Spain, to establish the model's validity and to optimise its calibration. The MBDS is the main clinical-administrative database for hospitalisations recorded in Spain, and to our knowledge, no predictive models for stroke mortality have previously been developed using this resource. The main study aim is to perform an external validation and recalibration of the coefficients of this predictive model with respect to a chronologically later cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS External validation (testing the model on a different cohort to assess its performance) and recalibration (validation with optimisation of model coefficients) were performed using the MBDS for patients admitted for ischaemic stroke in the period 2016-2018. A cohort study was designed, in which a recalibrated model was obtained by applying the variables of the original model without their coefficients. The variables from the original model were then applied to the subsequent cohort, together with the coefficients from the initial model. The areas under the curve (AUC) of the recalibration and the external validation procedure were compared. RESULTS The recalibrated model produced an AUC of 0.743 and was composed of the following variables: age (odds ratio, OR:1.073), female sex (OR:1.143), ischaemic heart disease (OR:1.192), hypertension (OR:0.719), atrial fibrillation (OR:1.414), hyperlipidaemia (OR:0.652), heart failure (OR:2.133) and posterior circulation stroke (OR: 0.755). External validation produced an AUC of 0.726. CONCLUSIONS The recalibrated clinical model thus obtained presented moderate-high discriminant ability and was generalisable to predict death for patients with ischaemic stroke. Rigorous external validation slightly decreased the AUC but confirmed the validity of the baseline model for the chronologically later cohort.

Abstract
Background Viral hepatitis is a global public health problem that affects millions of people each year, causing disability and death. Hepatitis B and C viruses are the most common causes of viral hepatitis and are associated with chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The primary site of infection for these viruses is the liver, the primary site of hormone and glucose metabolism closely linked to diabetes mellitus (DM), which is associated with increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. As a result, assessing the coexistence of viral hepatitis and DM could be important in disease management, prevention, and control measures in DM patients. Objective The aim of our study is to assess the prevalence and associated factors of HBV and HCV among diabetes patients attending Debre Tabor Referral Hospital. Methods An institutional-based, cross-sectional study was conducted from December 1, 2021, to February 30, 2021. A systematic sampling technique was used for selecting study participants. Serum samples were screened with a rapid test kit for hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) infections. A pretested structured questionnaire was constructed to collect the data, which were later analyzed using SPSS version 23. Inferential statistics were used to evaluate the associated risk factors for the outcome variable. A p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result A total of 152 diabetes patients were included in this study, with 78 (51.3%) males and 74 (48.7%) females, with a mean age of 39.24 ± 17.90 years. The prevalence of HBV and HCV was 6 (3.9%) and 2 (1.3%), respectively. Most of potential risk factors such as, histories of surgical procedures, tooth extraction, hepatitis infection in the family, blood transfusion, alcohol consumption, body tattooing, and multiple sexual partners were not statistically significant for HBV and HCV infections. Conclusion In this study, no association was obtained between sociodemographic, clinical, and behavioural factors and the prevalence of hepatitis B and C viruses. Furthermore, there is no significant association detected between HBV or potential HCV infection and DM. Despite these results, continuing professional training programs on HBV and HCV infection, including increased vaccination coverage rates for HBV, are required.

Abstract
This review summarizes the correlation between diabetes mellitus (DM) and gastric cancer (GC) from the perspectives of epidemiology, drug use, and potential mechanisms. The association between DM and GC is inconclusive, and the positive direction of the association reported in most published meta-analyses suggests that DM may be an independent risk factor for GC. Many clinical investigations have shown that people with DM and GC who undergo gastrectomy may have better glycemic control. The potential link between DM and GC may involve the interaction of multiple common risk factors, such as obesity, hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia, H. pylori infection, and the use of metformin. Although in vitro and in vivo data support that H. pylori infection status and metformin can influence GC risk in DM patients, there are conflicting results. Patient survival outcomes are influenced by multiple factors, so further research is needed to identify the patients who may benefit.

Abstract
Epidemiologic evidence supported an inverse association between HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), identifying HDL-C as a major cardiovascular risk factor and postulating diverse HDL vascular- and cardioprotective functions beyond their ability to drive reverse cholesterol transport. However, the failure of several clinical trials aimed at increasing HDL-C in patients with overt cardiovascular disease brought into question whether increasing the cholesterol cargo of HDL was an effective strategy to enhance their protective properties. In parallel, substantial evidence supports that HDLs are complex and heterogeneous particles whose composition is essential for maintaining their protective functions, subsequently strengthening the "HDL quality over quantity" hypothesis. The following state-of-the-art review covers the latest understanding as per the roles of HDL in ASCVD, delves into recent advances in understanding the complexity of HDL particle composition, including proteins, lipids and other HDL-transported components and discusses on the clinical outcomes after the administration of HDL-C raising drugs with particular attention to CETP (cholesteryl ester transfer protein) inhibitors.

Abstract
Background Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) is the utmost capable design to achieve protection over ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R), but this phenomenon gets attenuated during various pathological conditions like diabetes. Chrysin exhibits cardioprotection in various experiments however, its therapeutic potential on IPC-mediated cardioprotection via PI3K-Akt-eNOS pathway in streptozotocin (STZ) triggered diabetes-challenged rat heart is yet to be assessed. For that reason, the experiment has been planned to investigate chrysin's effect on the cardioprotective action of IPC involving the PI3K-Akt-eNOS cascade in rat hearts challenged to diabetes. Methods The project was accomplished through means of absorbance studies for biochemical parameters, infarct size measurement (TTC stain) and coronary flow. Results The findings of the present study revealed that STZ drastically augmented the serum glucose level and the chrysin significantly reversed the IPC-stimulated increased coronary flow, nitrite release, and reduced LDH (lactate dehydrogenase), CK-MB (creatine kinase) activities as well as infarct size in diabetes-induced rat heart. Furthermore, chrysin also reversed the IPC-induced reduction in oxidative stress in an isolated Langendorff's perfused diabetic rat heart. Moreover, four episodes of preconditioning by either PI3K or eNOS inhibitor in chrysin-pretreated diabetic rat hearts significantly abolished the protective effect of chrysin. Conclusion Consequently, these observations suggested that chrysin increases the therapeutic efficiency of IPC in mitigating I/R injury via PI3K-Akt-eNOS signalling in diabetes-challenged rat hearts. Hence, chrysin could be a potential alternative option to IPC in diabetic rat hearts.
