Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia in schizophrenia causes a serious loss of healthy life expectancy, making it imperative to explore key environmental risk factors. We aimed to assess the effect of PM2.5 and its constituents on dyslipidemia in schizophrenia, identify the critical hazardous components, and investigate the role of impaired thyroid hormones (THs) sensitivity in this association. METHODS We collected disease data on schizophrenia from the Anhui Mental Health Center from 2019 to 2022. Logistic regression was constructed to explore the effect of average annual exposure to PM2.5 and its components [black carbon (BC), organic matter (OM), sulfate (SO42-), ammonium (NH4+), and nitrate (NO3-)] on dyslipidemia, with subgroup analyses for age and gender. The degree of impaired THs sensitivity in participants was reflected by the Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index (TFQI), and its role in the association of PM2.5 components with dyslipidemia was explored. RESULTS A total of 5125 patients with schizophrenia were included in this study. Exposure to PM2.5 and its components (BC, OM, SO42-, NH4+, and NO3-) were associated with dyslipidemia with the odds ratios and 95 % confidence interval of 1.13 (1.04, 1.23), 1.16 (1.07, 1.26), 1.15 (1.06, 1.25), 1.11 (1.03, 1.20), 1.09 (1.00, 1.18), 1.12 (1.04, 1.20), respectively. Mixed exposure modeling indicated that BC played a major role in the effects of the mixture. More significant associations were observed in males and groups <45 years. In addition, we found that the effect of PM2.5 and its components on dyslipidemia was exacerbated as impaired THs sensitivity in the patients. CONCLUSIONS Exposure to PM2.5 and its components is associated with an increased risk of dyslipidemia in schizophrenia, which may be exacerbated by impaired THs sensitivity. Our results suggest a new perspective for the management of ambient particulate pollution and the protection of thyroid function in schizophrenia.

Abstract
Aims This study addresses the essential need for updated information on the burden of lip and oral cavity cancer (LOC) in China for informed healthcare planning. We aim to estimate the temporal trends and the attributable burdens of selected risk factors of LOC in China (1990-2021), and to predict the possible trends (2022-2031). Subject and methods Analysis was conducted using data from the Global Burden of Disease study (GBD) 2021, encompassing six key metrics: incidence, mortality, prevalence, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and years of life lost (YLLs). Absolute number and age-standardized rates, alongside 95% uncertainty intervals, were computed. Forecasting of disease burden from 2022 to 2031 was performed using an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. Results Over the observed period (1990-2021), there were notable increases in the number of deaths (142.2%), incidence (283.7%), prevalence (438.0%), DALYs (109.2%), YLDs (341.2%), and YLLs (105.1%). Age-standardized rates demonstrated notable changes, showing decreases and increases of -5.8, 57.3, 143.7, -8.9%, 85.8%, and - 10.7% in the respective metrics. The substantial majority of LOC burden was observed among individuals aged 40-79 years, and LOC may exhibit a higher burden among males in China. From 2022 to 2031, the age-standardized rate of incidence, prevalence, and YLDs of LOC showed upward trends; while mortality, DALYs, and YLLs showed downward trends, and their estimated values were predicted to change to 2.72, 10.47, 1.11, 1.10, 28.52, and 27.43 per 100,000 in 2031, respectively. Notably, tobacco and high alcohol use emerged as predominant risk factors contributing to the burden of LOC. Conclusion Between 1990 and 2021, the disability burden from LOC in China increased, while the death burden decreased, and projections suggest these trends will persist over the next decade. A significant portion of this disease burden to modifiable risk factors, specifically tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption, predominantly affecting males and individuals aged 40-79 years. Attention to these areas is essential for implementing targeted interventions and reducing the impact of LOC in China.

Abstract
The incidence and mortality rates of cancer in China have an increasing trend, with a remarkable rise in the number of new cases and deaths. Despite this, cancer profile and regional distribution remained relatively stable. China realized a series of initiatives and issued strategic documents to improve cancer education. These include the establishment of a three-tier cancer prevention program and the fulfillment of various guidelines and plans, including the Healthy China Action-Cancer control Implementation Plan (2019-2022). This comprehensive review describes the status of cancer education in China from 2013 to 2022 discussing the role of different cancer education places and that of educators. It also highlights the use of innovative educational methods and educational evaluations, which are effective in improving patient outcomes and satisfaction. Although the Chinese government has taken many measures to improve cancer education in China, several issues remain unresolved. Challenges such as the wide spectrum of tumors, the aging population, and the huge urban-rural disparities require further investment from Chinese government. In addition, cancer control in China started relatively late and lacks the support of specific legislation to control it. It is therefore necessary to increase the investment in cancer education, especially in rural areas and the legislation in areas related to cancer control should be improved to increase the accessibility and quality of education on tumor prevention and treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sex is a crucial factor in the development, progression, and treatment of cancer, making it vital to examine cancer incidence trends by sex for effective prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the incidence of cancer in China between 2007 and 2021, with a focus on sex-based trends. METHODS A population-based cancer registry comprising 14.14 million individuals was maintained between 2007 and 2021 by the Beijing Municipal Health Big Data and Policy Research Center. The age-standardized rates (ASRs) of cancers were calculated using the Segi population. The average annual percentage of change (AAPC) was evaluated using the joinpoint regression model, while the Bayesian age-period-cohort model was used to predict cancer incidence in the next 10 years. RESULTS From 2007 to 2021, the study included 651,342 incident patients with cancer, of whom 51.2% (n=333,577) were women. The incidence indicated by the ASR for all cancers combined was 200.8 per 100,000 for women and 184.4 per 100,000 for men. The increase in incidence indicated by AAPC for all malignancies combined significantly increased in women between 2007 and 2021 (AAPC=3.1%; P<.001), whereas it remained constant in men (AAPC=0.3%; P=.30). Although the overall incidence of all cancers indicated by AAPC increased in young men (AAPC=3.2%; P=.01), the greatest increase was observed among young women (AAPC=6.1%; P<.001). The incidence rate ratio for cancer in women increased among subsequent younger generations compared with patients born in the 1962-1966 cohort. The ASR in women will increase 1.6-fold over the next 10 years, with women having twice the incidence rate of men by 2031. CONCLUSIONS The rising incidence of cancer among women in China has become a growing concern, emphasizing the need for increased efforts in cancer prevention and early screening, especially among young women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Developing countries face an "obesity epidemic," particularly affecting children and younger adults. While obesity is a known risk factor for 12 types of cancer, primarily affecting older populations, its impact on younger generations is understudied. METHODS This study analyzed data from a population-based cancer registry covering 14.14 million individuals in China (2007-2021). We compared the incidence of obesity- and non-obesity-related cancers and applied an age-period-cohort model to estimate their impacts. FINDINGS Among 651,342 cancer cases, 48.47% were obesity related. The age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs) of the 12 obesity-related cancers increased annually by 3.6% (p < 0.001), while ASRs for non-obesity-related cancers remained stable. Obesity-related cancers surged among younger adults, with rates rising across successive generations. The annual percentage of change decreased with age, from 15.28% for ages 25-29 years to 1.55% for ages 60-64 years. The incidence rate ratio for obesity-related cancer was higher in younger generations compared to those born in 1962-1966. We predict that the ASR for obesity-related cancers will nearly double in the next decade. CONCLUSIONS The rising incidence of obesity-related cancers among young adults poses a significant public health concern. The increasing cancer burden underscores the need for targeted interventions to address the obesity epidemic. Abstract
Background The objective of this investigation was to explore the health status and epidemiological features of civil servants working in Hebei Province, China. Methods Data was collected through a cross-sectional survey that involved 50,039 adult civil servants in Hebei Province. The research was conducted at the Hebei Provincial Medical Examination Centre and included inquiries about demographics, health behaviours, chronic illnesses, and abnormal check-up indicators. Statistical data were used to determine the prevalence of chronic diseases and abnormal health examination indicators. Subgroup analyses by sex were then conducted to calculate the similarities and differences in health status between men and women. Results The findings of the survey indicate that 14.2% of individuals who work in civil service suffer from obesity. Additionally, a considerable proportion of this group display poor health behaviours, including smoking and alcohol consumption. Hypertension (21.03%), dyslipidaemia (10.88%), and diabetes mellitus (8.56%) were identified as the top three chronic diseases, while cardiovascular diseases were prevalent at 6.27% among civil servants. Ultrasound showed a high prevalence of fatty liver, non-smooth gallbladder and liver cysts (44.61%, 33.24% and 23.26% respectively). The occurrence of pulmonary nodules was alarmingly high at 88.48%, while thyroid nodules were found in as much as 62.65% of patients. Abnormal E/A values≤1, prostate hyperplasia, breast nodules, and carotid plaques were also prevalent, with percentages ranging from 46.76% to 63.04%. In subgroup analyses by gender, the prevalence of chronic diseases and abnormal screening indicators was consistently higher in men than in women, with the exception of thyroid nodules and thyroid surgery. Conclusion The survey revealed a large proportion of civil servants in Hebei Province, China, suffering from chronic diseases, underscoring the necessity for enhanced attention to chronic disease prevention and management in this group and emphasising the requirement for focused interventions aimed at improving health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of cigarette smoking among women is significantly different from that of men, however, cigarette use by women is little known. The study aims to describe cigarette use prevalence and patterns among Chinese females by age and province. METHODS This study was based on the 2018 China Health Literacy Survey (2018 CHLS), a nationally representative cross-sectional study, and our analysis included 43,319 female participants aged 20-69 with valid data. The prevalence of cigarette use was estimated overall by sociodemographic factors and weighted based on the census population data. The logistic regression model was conducted to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the risk factors associated with cigarette use and dependency. RESULTS In China, the estimated female current cigarette use prevalence was 1.85%, with over half of the population suffering from tobacco dependence (7.34 million). Jilin Province has the highest cigarette prevalence among women (10.59%), while Fujian Province has the lowest (0.27%). Participants over 60 years old (aOR=1.61, 95%CI=1.20-2.14), single (aOR=1.54, 95%CI=1.07-2.21), with primary education (aOR=1.93, 95%CI=1.47-2.52) were more likely to smoke. The age of smoking initiation among women intergenerational advanced, and compared to the cigarette users without tobacco dependence, those who have tobacco dependence start smoking earlier in all age groups (25.69 years vs. 19.36 years, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The cigarette use prevalence among Chinese women was 1.85%, and there are significant differences among provinces. We noted a trend of women initiating smoking at increasingly younger ages, particularly among those with tobacco dependence.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Smoking conventional cigarettes or vaping (SV) poses significant health threats to adolescents. School climate and school identification are key elements of the school environment and potential factors of SV. Based on the Stress Coping Theory, the mediations between school climate/school identification and SV, via perceived stress/active coping, were examined. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted among secondary school students from February to March 2022 in Taizhou, China. Structural equation modeling was used. RESULTS The prevalence of SV among the 7526 participants was 4.7% (singular use of conventional cigarettes: 3.2%; singular use of electronic cigarettes: 3.6%; dual use: 2.1%). School climate, school identification, and active coping were positively, and perceived stress (family stress, academic stress, and peer-related stress) were negatively associated with SV. The association between school climate and SV was fully mediated via: 1) school climate → perceived stress → SV; 2) school climate → active coping → SV; and 3) school climate → perceived stress → active coping → SV. The effect sizes were 52.1%, 43.8%, and 6.3%, respectively. Similar partial mediation mechanisms were found between school identification and SV, with relatively small effect sizes (<10%). CONCLUSIONS This study observed the prevalence of SV among Chinese secondary school students. School climate and school identification had both significant direct and indirect (via perceived stress/active coping) effects on SV. Positive school environments may reduce students' stress and promote active coping. The stress coping mechanisms explained the association between school climate and SV better than between school identification and SV.

Abstract
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death, and China accounts for about 30% of worldwide smokers and 40% of global tobacco consumption. This study examines socioeconomic and community disparities in smoking among young Chinese people from 2010 to 2016. Data were from 953 people aged 16 to 25 in four waves of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). Two-level logistic regressions were fitted to account for both inter-individual and intra-individual differences over time. Weight-adjusted multilevel regression results showed a decrease in cigarette smoking among rural young people (OR = 0.71, 95% CI = [0.52, 0.98]) from 2010 to 2016. Higher family income was related to higher odds of cigarette smoking among young people (OR = 1.75, 95% CI = [1.10, 2.80]). Cigarette smoking among young people in families with higher incomes increased over time. Policies and interventions targeting the young should consider the socioeconomic disparities and multilevel context.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the sex-specific prevalence of smoking (past 30 days) and the associations with height among university/college students. PARTICIPANTS 25,405 (11,579/14,826 males/females) college students in Xi'an China. METHODS A cross-sectional, self-administered survey. RESULTS The male and female prevalence of smoking (past 30 days) was 32.9% and 7.4%, respectively. The prevalence of smoking of the male height groups ranged from 29.8% to 36.9%; only the ≥188 cm height group showed significantly higher prevalence than the reference group (i.e., 173-177cm; 33.0%). The female prevalence of smoking was 4.0-8.2% in the ≤170cm groups and increased to 12.3% in the 171-175 cm group and 36.1% in the ≥176 cm group, while it was 6.5% for the reference group (161-165 cm). CONCLUSIONS This exploratory study firstly revealed the significantly higher prevalence of smoking among the "tallest" height groups, especially among females. Future studies are warranted to confirm such findings and explore related mechanisms.

Abstract
Chinese men consume around 40% of the world's cigarettes, causing a substantial and growing burden of tobacco-attributed death and disease. In 2005, the Chinese Government ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, and tobacco control measures have since increased nationwide. To assess tobacco control progress, obstacles, and opportunities, this Review describes the long-term evolution of cigarette consumption and the associated disease burden in mainland China, and the implementation of five important tobacco control strategies advocated by WHO. These strategies covered tobacco taxation; package warnings; advertising, promotion, and sponsorship bans; public smoking bans; and cessation services. Although only 2% of women in China now smoke, half of all adult men smoke cigarettes. By the 2010s, smoking accounted for about a fifth of all adult male deaths, and this proportion is rising, following a trajectory similar to that seen in the USA 40 years earlier. The self-regulating national tobacco monopoly and its influence on policy, the country's relatively low tobacco tax, and its weak package warnings and enforcement of other tobacco control strategies all highlight challenges in tobacco control. However, these challenges can also provide opportunities to discourage smoking initiation in young women and encourage cessation in men, assisting China's long march towards better health.

Abstract
Background Pancreatic cancer is renowned for its elevated incidence and mortality rates on a global scale. The disease burden of pancreatic cancer is anticipated to increase, particularly in Asia, due to its vast and rapidly aging population. Methods Data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 were analyzed for pancreatic cancer burden across 52 countries in Asia, including the incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) for pancreatic cancer, with a focus on risk factors such as high body mass index (BMI), elevated fasting plasma glucose, and smoking. We applied the Estimated Annual Percentage Change, the Age-Period-Cohort model, and decomposition analysis to evaluate incidence trends and effects. Results From 1990 to 2019, both incidence and mortality rates of pancreatic cancer in Asia significantly increased, with an average annual standardized incidence rate change of 1.73%. Males consistently exhibited higher rates than females, with smoking as a key risk factor. Central Asia reported the highest rates, and South Asia the lowest. The incidence rose with age, peaking in those aged 70~74. The disease burden increased in all age groups, particularly in populations aged 55 and above, representing 84.41% of total cases in 2019, up from 79.01% in 1990. Pancreatic cancer ranked the fifth in incidence among six major gastrointestinal tumors but presented a significant growth rate of mortality and DALY. Conclusion With the growing, aging population in Asia, the pancreatic cancer burden is projected to escalate, bringing a significant public health challenge. Hence, comprehensive public health strategies emphasizing early detection, risk modification, and optimized treatment of pancreatic cancer are imperative.

Abstract
The consumption of tobacco is harmful to health and has huge social costs. "Tax to control tobacco" is a widely implemented tobacco control measure all over the world. In order to examine the achievements of two tobacco excise tax reforms in China in 2009 and 2015 on controlling tobacco consumption, we first establish an intertemporal consumption model for addictive goods, and then validate the effectiveness of the two tobacco excise tax reforms using a Continuous Difference-in-Differences Model based on the panel data from 294 cities in China from 2007 to 2018. The results show that the tobacco excise tax reform in 2015 considerably reduced tobacco consumption, while the reform in 2009 did not, providing empirical evidence on the importance of "price links to tax" for tobacco control. Additionally, the study discovers that the tax reform has a heterogeneous effect on the age of smokers, the price of cigarettes, and city size.

Abstract
To investigate the relation of smoking and microplastic inhalation, we conducted a prospective study combining population-based and experimental work. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples from 17 smokers and 15 nonsmokers were collected in Zhuhai City, China. We simulated an active smoking model to explore the contribution of smoking to inhaled microplastics. The characteristics of microplastics in BALF samples and cigarette smoke were determined using laser direct infrared spectroscopy. We compared the differences between smokers and nonsmokers as well as between cigarette smoke and control groups. Microplastics were identified positive in all BALF samples. Smokers had higher concentrations of total microplastics (25.86 particles/g), polyurethane (11.34 particles/g), and silicone (1.15 particles/g) than nonsmokers. In the cigarette smoking simulation model, higher concentrations of total microplastics (9.99 particles/L), polyurethane (4.66 particles/L), and silicone (2.78 particles/L) were present in the cigarette smoke than those in the control group. We confirmed and extended the evidence on the presence of microplastics in the lower respiratory tract. These findings also provide new evidence on the relation between cigarette smoking and microplastic inhalation.

Abstract
Background The association between tobacco use and hypertension risk has been extensively researched but remains controversial, and few existing studies have considered the role of tobacco type and dosage response in this association. In this context, this study aims to provide epidemiological evidence for the possible relationship between tobacco smoking and future hypertension risk, with the tobacco type and consumption dose into consideration. Methods This study was based on 10-year follow-up data from the Guizhou Population Health Cohort conducted in southwest China. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals [95% confidence intervals (CIs)], and restricted cubic spline analyses were performed to visualize the dose-response association. Results A total of 5,625 participants (2,563 males and 3,062 females) were included in the final analysis. Heavy smokers of machine-rolled cigarettes had an elevated hypertension risk compared with non-smokers (HR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.05-2.16). The interaction effects of heavy smoking-heavy drinking patterns increased the future hypertension risk, with an adjusted HR of 2.58 (95% CI: 1.06-6.33). Conclusion This study did not find a significant association between overall tobacco use status and the risk of hypertension. However, heavy machine-rolled cigarette smokers had a statistically significant increased risk of hypertension compared with non-smokers, and a J-shape association has been found between the average daily consumption of machine-rolled cigarettes and the risk of hypertension. Besides, tobacco and alcohol consumption jointly increased the long-term hypertension risk.

Abstract
Background National Cancer Center (NCC) of China annually reports the nationwide statistics for cancer incidence and mortality using population-based cancer registry data from all available cancer registries in China. Methods There were a total of 487 registries which reported high quality data of cancer incidence and mortality across China in 2016. The nationwide numbers of new cancer cases and deaths were estimated using the pooled cancer registry data, which were stratified by area (urban/rural), sex, age group (0, 1-4, 5-9, 10-14…85+) and cancer site for incidence and mortality, and then multiplied by corresponding national population. The world Segi's population was applied for the calculation of age-standardized rates. Results About 4,064,000 new cancer cases and 2,413,500 new cancer deaths occurred in China in 2016. Cancers of the lung, colon-rectum, stomach, liver and female breast were the top five common cancers, accounting for 57.4% of total cancer new cases. Cancers of the lung, liver, stomach, colon-rectum and esophagus were the five leading causes of cancer deaths, accounting for 69.3% of total cancer deaths. The crude and age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) were 293.91 and 186.46 per 100,000 population, respectively. The crude mortality rate was 174.55/100,000 and the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) was 105.19/100,000. The ASIR was higher but the ASMR was lower in urban areas than that in rural areas. In past decades, the ASIR was relatively stable in males, but significantly increased by about 2.3% per year in females for overall cancers combined. In contrast, the ASMR significantly decreased by about 1.2% per year for both sexes during 2000-2016. Notably, the cancer-specific ASIR and ASMR of esophageal, stomach, and liver cancers decreased significantly, whereas both rates for cancers of the colon-rectum, prostate, female breast, cervix, and thyroid increased significantly. Conclusions Cancer remains a major public health problem in China, which demands long-term collaborative efforts of a broad community. With the national guideline on cancer prevention and control, tailored cancer prevention and control programs are needed in different regions to help reduce the burden of these highly fatal diseases in China.

Abstract
Background Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is a rare, life-threatening condition affecting the aorta. This study explores the relationship between the level of admission D-dimer, which was assessed during the first 2 h from admission, and in-hospital major adverse events (MAE) with ATAAD. Methods A total of 470 patients with enhanced computed tomography (CT) confirmed diagnosis of ATAAD who underwent operation treatment in Guangdong Provincial People's hospital between September 2017 and June 2021 were enrolled in the present study. The X-tile program was used to determine the optimal D-dimer thresholds for risk. Restricted cubic spline (RSC) was performed to assess the association between D-dimer and endpoint. The perioperative data were compared between the two groups, univariate and multivariate analyses were used to investigate the risk factors of major adverse events (in-hospital mortality, gastrointestinal bleeding, paraplegia, acute kidney failure, reopen the chest, low cardiac output syndrome, cerebrovascular accident, respiratory insufficiency, MODS, gastrointestinal bleeding, and severe infection). Results Among 470 patients, 151 (32.1%) had MAE. In-hospital mortality was 7.44%. The patients with D-dimer >14,500 ng/ml were more likely to present with acute kidney failure, low cardiac output, cerebrovascular accident, multiple organ dysfunction syndromes (MODS), gastrointestinal bleeding, and severe infection. D-dimer level was an independent risk factor for acute kidney failure (OR 2.09, 95% CI: 1.25–3.51, p = 0.005), MODS (OR 6.40, 95% CI: 1.23–33.39, p = 0.028), gastrointestinal bleeding (OR 17.76, 95% CI: 1.99–158.78, p = 0.010) and mortality (OR 3.17, 95% CI: 1.32–7.63, p = 0.010). Multivariate regression analysis of adverse events also suggested that D-dimer >14,500 ng/ml (OR 1.68, 95% CI: 1.09–2.61, p = 0.020) was the independent risk factor of major adverse events. Conclusions Increasing D-dimer levels were independently associated with the in-hospital MAE and thus can be used as a useful prognostic biomarker before the surgery.

Abstract
Background: Maternal vitamin D deficiency might generate adverse reproductive outcomes, and socio-economic inequalities in micronutrient-related diseases have often been found. This study aimed to explore the interactive effects of maternal vitamin D status and socio-economic status (SES) on risk of spontaneous abortion. Methods: A population-based case–control study was conducted including 293 women with spontaneous abortion and 498 control women in December 2009 and January, 2010 in Henan Province, China. Information on pregnancy outcomes, maternal demographic, lifestyle and exposure factors and blood samples were collected at the same time. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL. SES index was constructed with principal component analysis by aggregating women’s and their husbands’ education level and occupation, and household income and expenditure. Interactive effects were assessed on a multiplicative scale with ratio of the odds ratio (ROR). Results: Compared to those with high SES and vitamin D sufficiency, women with vitamin D deficiency and low SES index had an increased risk of spontaneous abortion (aOR: 1.99; 95% CI: 1.23–3.23). The ROR was 2.06 (95% CI: 1.04–4.10), indicating a significant positive multiplicative interaction. Conclusions: Maternal low SES may strengthen the effect of vitamin D deficiency exposure on spontaneous abortion risk in this Chinese population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research has suggested an association between depression and subsequent acute stroke incidence, but few studies have examined any effect modification by sociodemographic factors. In addition, no studies have investigated this association among primary care recipients with hypertension. METHODS We examined the anonymized records of all public general outpatient visits by patients aged 45+ during January 2007-December 2010 in Hong Kong to extract primary care patients with hypertension for analysis. We took the last consultation date as the baseline and followed them up for 4 years (until 2011-2014) to observe any subsequent acute hospitalization due to stroke. Mixed-effects Cox models (random intercept across 74 included clinics) were implemented to examine the association between depression (ICPC diagnosis or anti-depressant prescription) at baseline and the hazard of acute stroke (ICD-9: 430-437.9). Effect modification by age, sex, and recipient status of social security assistance was examined in extended models with respective interaction terms specified. RESULTS In total, 396 858 eligible patients were included, with 9099 (2.3%) having depression, and 10 851 (2.7%) eventually hospitalized for stroke. From the adjusted analysis, baseline depression was associated with a 17% increased hazard of acute stroke hospitalization [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03-1.32]. This association was suggested to be even stronger among men than among women (hazard ratio = 1.29, 95% CI 1.00-1.67). CONCLUSION Depression is more strongly associated with acute stroke incidence among male than female primary care patients with hypertension. More integrated services are warranted to address their needs.

Abstract
Although tobacco leaves (TLs) contain abundant bacteria, how the geography and leaf position of TLs affect these bacteria is unclear. Here, TLs at different positions from Henan (HN, strong flavor style) and Yunnan (YN, fresh flavor style) provinces were collected, and the bacteria were characterized by Illumina sequencing at harvest and 1 year of storage. Bacterial communities were very different between TLs originating from different geographical areas and positions, and beta diversity analysis showed that leaf position was the most important factor for phyllospheric bacterial communities, followed by geographical area and storage time. At the genus level, Subdoligranulum, Thermus, and Acinetobacter were obviously more abundant in HN than in YN, while Blautia and Ruminococcus were significantly more abundant in YN. These differences in bacterial communities decreased after 1 year of storage, indicating that the microbiota tends to become similar during tobacco processing. Storage time also affected the phyllospheric bacteria of TLs, as the bacterial communities shifted significantly on both HN and YN TLs after 1 year of storage. Significant differences in the predicted genes were also observed between the different geographic locations and leaf positions. Potential human pathogens, including Acinetobacter, Methylobacterium, and Escherichia-Shigella, were greatly different between TLs originating from different areas and positions. These data suggested that geographic variations and positions were associated with phyllospheric bacterial communities on TLs, which may be related to not only the flavor style and quality of TLs but also the potential health risks to humans. Abstract
Tobacco smoking is the leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although a number of smokers are aware of the adverse outcomes of smoking and express a strong desire to stop smoking, most smoking quit attempts end in relapse within the first few days of abstinence, primarily resulting from the aversive aspects of the nicotine withdrawal syndrome. Therefore, studying the neural mechanisms of smoking abstinence, identifying smokers with heightened relapse vulnerability prior to quit attempts, and developing effective smoking cessation treatments appear to be promising strategies for improving the success of quit attempts. In recent years, with the development of magnetic resonance imaging, the neural substrates of smoking abstinence have become extensively studied. In this review, we first introduce the psychophysiological changes induced by smoking abstinence, including affective, cognitive, and somatic signs. We then provide an overview of the magnetic resonance imaging-based evidence regarding abstinence-related functional changes accompanied by these psychophysiological changes. We conclude with a discussion of the neural markers that could predict relapse during quit attempts and a summary of the psychophysiological interventions that are currently often used to help with smoking cessation. This review extends our understanding of the role of the central nervous system in smoking abstinence.

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the impact of cancer-related mortality on life expectancy in Feicheng City.We extracted the death records and population data of Feicheng City from 2013 to 2018 through the Feicheng Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The mortality, premature mortality, cause-eliminated life expectancy, potential years of life lost (PYLL), average potential years of life lost (APYLL), annual change percentage (APC), and other indicators of cancer were calculated. The age-standardized rates were calculated using the sixth national census (2010).From 2013 to 2018, the mortality rate of cancer in Feicheng City was 221.55/100,000, and the standardized mortality rate was 166.37/100,000. The standardized mortality rate increased from 2013 to 2014 and then decreased annually. The premature mortality of cancer was 8.98% and showed a downward trend (APC = -2.47%, t = -3.10, P = .04). From 2013 to 2018, the average life expectancy of residents in Feicheng City was 78.63 years. Eliminating the impact of cancer, life expectancy could increase by 3.72 years. The rate of life loss caused by cancer in men was higher than that in women. The total life loss caused by cancer deaths was 126,870.50 person-years, the potential life loss rate was 22.51‰, and the average potential life loss was 13.30 years. The standardized potential years of life lost rate showed a downward trend (APC = -2.96%, t = -3.72, P = .02), and APYLL decreased by 1.98% annually (t = -5.44, P = .01). The top 5 malignant tumors in APYLL were leukemia, breast cancer, brain tumor, liver cancer, and ovarian cancer.Lung cancer, esophageal cancer, female breast cancer, and childhood leukemia have a great impact on the life expectancy of residents in Feicheng City. Effective measures need to be taken to reduce the disease burden of malignant tumors.

Abstract
Tobacco is a traditional Chinese medicine containing a variety of biologically active substances. In addition to being used to make cigarettes, tobacco is also a vastly underdeveloped medicinal resource. In order to identify and clarify the biological activities and medicinal value of tobacco leaves, the metabolomes of tobacco leaves were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) based on multiple reaction monitoring (MRM). In total, 1169 metabolites were identified and quantified. The results showed that the metabolic profiles of the tobacco cultivars K326 and Yun87 are similar to each other but different from that of Hongda. Moreover, the curing process affects the metabolic profiles of tobacco leaves. Flavonoids are the largest class of metabolites in tobacco leaves. Flavonoids have multiple biological functions; for example, they can promote or inhibit inflammation. We found that quercetin provides anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the il-1β mRNA expression, while glycitin and neohesperidin can promote il-1β and il-6 production. Our results provide in-depth insights into the medical uses and biological mechanisms of tobacco leaves.

Abstract
Background Data on the effect of smoking on In-hospital outcome in patients with left ventricular dysfunction undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery are limited. We sought to determine the influence of smoking on CABG patients with left ventricular dysfunction. Methods A retrospective study was conducted using data from the China Heart Failure Surgery Registry database. Eligible patients with left ventricular ejection fraction less than 50% underwent isolated CABGS were included. In addition to the use of multivariate regression models, a 1–1 propensity scores matched analysis was performed. Our study (n = 6531) consisted of 3635 smokers and 2896 non-smokers. Smokers were further divided into ex-smokers (n = 2373) and current smokers (n = 1262). Results The overall in-hospital morality was 3.9%. Interestingly, current smokers have lower in-hospital mortality than non-smokers [2.3% vs 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio (OR) 0.612 (95% CI 0.395–0.947) ]. No difference was detected in mortality between ex-smokers and non-smokers [3.6% vs 4.9%; adjusted OR 0.974 (0.715–1.327)]. No significant differences in other clinical end points were observed. Results of propensity-matched analyses were broadly consistent. Conclusions It is paradoxically that current smokers had lower in-hospital mortality than non-smokers. Future studies should be performed to further understand the biological mechanisms that may explain this ‘smoker’s paradox’ phenomenon. Abstract
Background According to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017, smoking is one of the leading four risk factors contributing to deaths in China. We aimed to evaluate the associations of smoking with all-cause mortality in a Chinese rural population. Methods Male participants over age 45 (n = 5367) from a large familial aggregation study in rural China, were included in the current analyses. A total of 528 former smokers and 3849 current smokers accounted for 10 and 71.7% of the cohort, respectively. Generalized Estimating Equations were used to evaluate the association between baseline smoking status and mortality, adjusting for pertinent covariates. Results There were 579 recorded deaths during the 15-year follow-up. Current smokers (odds ratio [OR],1.60; 95% CI,1.23–2.08) had higher all-cause mortality risks than nonsmokers. Relative to nonsmokers, current smokers of more than 40 pack-years ([OR],1.85; 95% CI,1.33–2.56) had a higher all-cause mortality risk. Compared to nonsmokers, current smokers who started smoking before age 20 ([OR],1.91; 95% CI,1.43–2.54) had a higher all-cause mortality risk, and former smokers in the lower pack-year group who quit after age 41 (median) ([OR],3.19; 95% CI,1.83–5.56) also had a higher risk of death after adjustment. Furthermore, former smokers who were also former drinkers had the highest significant risk of mortality than never smokers or drinkers. (P for interaction = 0.034). Conclusions This study provides evidence that current smokers and former smokers have a higher mortality risk than nonsmokers and would benefit from cessation at a younger age. Abstract
PURPOSE The study aimed to give a comprehensive overview of characteristics and evaluate in-hospital clinical outcomes among hospitalized acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) patients in China using data from the AECOPD inpatient registry (ACURE). PATIENTS AND METHODS The ACURE is an ongoing, national, multicenter, observational registry. Participants enrolled during phase I stage (1st September 2017 to 25th February 2020) of ACURE with confirmed AECOPD diagnoses were studied. Descriptive analyses were conducted to describe features and occurrences of in-hospital clinical outcomes of AECOPD inpatients in real-world China. RESULTS A total of 5334 AECOPD inpatients from 163 sites in 28 provinces or province-level municipalities were included. Among all participants, 78.8% were males and the median age was 69.0 [interquartile range (IQR): 63.0-76.0] years. The proportions of current and former smokers were 23.6% and 44.2%, respectively. The median age at COPD diagnosis was 64.0 (IQR: 57.0-71.0) years and 88.7% participants demonstrated at least one comorbidity. During stable period, only 56.9% subjects received pharmacological therapies and the influenza vaccination rate was 2.9%. During hospitalization, 99.5% subjects received pharmacological treatments and antibiotics were prescribed to 90.9% participants. The all-cause in-hospital mortality was 0.1% and no significant difference was found across hospital categories. CONCLUSION Clinical features of Chinese AECOPD inpatients were different from those of other populations. In real-world China, the clinical management during stable period was unsatisfied, whereas therapy during hospitalization was effective regarding in-hospital clinical outcomes regardless of hospital category.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The growing prevalence of tobacco use in low "to middle" income countries (LMICs) and the hurdles of conducting tobacco cessation in that context necessitates a focus on the scope of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in LMICs to guide tobacco cessation in this environment. We conducted a scoping review to identify LMIC tobacco cessation RCTs. METHODS Consistent with PRISMA-ScR guidelines and without language restrictions, we systematically searched peer-reviewed databases (MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, articles published since inception, latest searches in March 2020) and gray literature (clinical trials registries, searches between September and December 2019). We searched for data on RCT type, outcome significance and intervention description. Inclusion: research conducted in LMICs; tobacco cessation; RCT. Exclusion: research conducted in high income countries; non-RCT; studies involving only those aged <18. Data was extracted from published reports. We generated narrative summaries of each LMIC's tobacco cessation RCT research environment. RESULTS Of 8404 articles screened, we identified 92 studies. Tobacco cessation RCTs were recorded in 16 of 138 countries/territories in LMICs. Evidence was weak in quality and severely limited. Most RCTs were psychosocial, with limited behavioral and pharmacological variants. CONCLUSIONS Tobacco control within LMICs is essential to reduce the tobacco mortality burden. Researchers should be cognizant that tobacco cessation in LMICs is still not an environment where best practice has been established. We suggest that developing solutions specific for LMICs is key to effective tobacco control in LMICs.

Abstract
This research chooses the method of narrative literature review to analyze the barriers in implementing tobacco regulatory policies in China and explore the strategies that can overcome these challenges. China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of tobacco products. Although the prevalence of cigarette smoking declined from 34.5% to 27.7% between 1984 and 2015, the reduction over the 30 years has been slow. Therefore, effective tobacco regulatory policies are necessary. However, as the tobacco industry is one of the major sources of government revenue and an indispensable part of the national economy, the implementation of tobacco regulatory policies faces many challenges. In terms of the institutional dimension, the ambiguous attitude of national institutions and tobacco companies’ development strategies impede the enforcement of tobacco policies. In addition, the primary economic barrier to tobacco control is the unwillingness of the government to raise value-added tax on tobacco. Finally, the social customs of exchanging individual cigarettes and gifting packaged cigarettes among adults and juveniles in China hinder the implementation of tobacco regulatory policies. In this case, a combined strategy of top-down and bottom-up approaches can remove these barriers, such as using the authoritative power to control tobacco use and raising non-smokers’ awareness of smoking risks and public education.

Abstract
Background The sustained high prevalence of smoking in China has contributed substantially to the burden of chronic diseases, including respiratory diseases. This study compared the prevalence of smoking and respiratory diseases in Chinese adults between two time periods spanning over 25 years. Methods Cross-sectional surveys were performed in four Chinese cities of Chongqing, Lanzhou, Wuhan, and Guangzhou in 1993–1996 (Period 1) and in 2017–2018 (Period 2). Participants completed questionnaires asking smoking status, the presence of asthma and chronic bronchitis, education attainment and household characteristics. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios of disease prevalence with regard to active smoking status for men and passive smoking status for women. Results Prevalence of asthma, prevalence of chronic bronchitis, and smoking rate, all decreased from Period 1 to Period 2. We observed strong evidence that active smoking increased prevalence for both asthma and chronic bronchitis in men during Period 1, with spatial heterogeneity and modifying effect by college-level education. Home exposure to passive smoking was associated with increased odds of having chronic bronchitis among female participants in Chongqing during Period 2, although the association was not statistically significant. Conclusions The prevalence for asthma and chronic bronchitis were lower in 2017–2018 compared to 25 years ago in the same four Chinese cities. Decreased smoking rate may have contribution to the improvement of these respiratory diseases. Male smokers, especially those without college-level education, showed higher prevalence of chronic bronchitis compared to nonsmokers during Period 1.

Abstract
Objective Spirometric lung function is usually used to evaluate respiratory health. However, the impact of lung function on extra-pulmonary diseases and all-cause mortality has not been fully elucidated, especially in people without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Patients and Methods Participants aged ≥20 and underwent spirometry test from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2007-2012 were analyzed in this study. Multivariate logistic and Cox regressions were used to evaluate the impact of forced expiratory volume in 1 second percent of predicted (FEV1% predicted) and forced vital capacity percent of predicted (FVC% predicted) on 14 extra-pulmonary diseases and all-cause morbidity after adjusting for multiple confounders. Results During 2007-2012, 1800 COPD patients and 11,437 non-COPD subjects were included. The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome (MS), congestive heart failure (CHF), coronary disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease (CKD), arthritis, cancer, underweight and osteoporosis in COPD patients was higher than that in the non-COPD population. After adjusting for confounders, the decrease of FEV1% predicted and FVC% predicted was related with higher odds of having hypertension, DM, obesity, MS, CHF, coronary disease and depression (OR > 1, P<0.05) in both the COPD and non-COPD populations. These 2 indices were also related with higher odds of dyslipidemia, CKD, arthritis and osteoporosis in the non-COPD population. The risk of stroke, anemia and cancer was not related with the decrease of lung function. In addition, the decrease of lung function was independent risk factors for the increase of all-cause mortality. These risks were gradually increased with the decrease of lung function. Conclusion The decrease of FEV1% predicted and FVC% predicted was related with higher risk of multiple extra-pulmonary diseases and all-cause mortality in both the COPD and non-COPD population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the risk factors of the occurrence of nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or cleft palate (NSCL/P) in Xinjiang Province, China. DESIGN The study included 359 patients of NSCL/P and 310 controls. Information about sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors, negative life events, possible environmental hazards exposures, and use of supplementations were collected from cases and controls. Both t test and χ2 tests were used for group comparisons. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the independent associations between environmental risk factors and the presence of NSCL/P. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to establish the predictive variables for the occurrence of NSCL/P. RESULTS The results showed that maternal pesticide exposure (odds ratio [OR] = 11.40, 95%CI: 5.40-24.10), antibiotic drugs use (OR = 1.32, 95%CI: 1.14-1.53), paternal smoking (OR = 3.30, 95%CI: 1.87-5.83), threatened abortion (OR = 12.2, 95%CI: 3.29-45.25) were associated with increased risk of NSCL/P in offspring. In contrast, maternal moderate (OR = 0.43, 95%CI: 0.20-0.92) and middle physical workload (OR = 0.48, 95%CI: 0.0.23-0.97), vitamin-B complex supplementations (OR = 0.11, 95%CI: 0.03-0.41), calcium and iron (OR = 0.27, 95%CI: 0.08-0.90) supplementations were associated with reduced risk of NSCL/P in offspring. These variables together explain nearly 60% of the variation of occurrence of NSCL/P. CONCLUSION These findings from our study may help to develop primary prevention strategies for NSCL/P in Xinjiang.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevention and control of cardiometabolic conditions and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in China may contribute to sustainable CVD reduction globally, given the fact that one-fifth of the worldwide population is in China. Knowing the distribution of behavioral risk factors (e.g., smoking and physical inactivity), especially at a national level in China, would be extremely relevant to the field of public health and CVD prevention. The objectives of this study were to investigate the nationwide prevalence of obesity, smoking, heavy drinking, and physical inactivity in Chinese adults, and further explore whether cardiometabolic conditions would modify the distribution of behavioral risk factors. METHODS This population-based study is based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2012), including 17,302 adults (≥45 years, mean age 59.67 years, female 51.66%) from 25 provinces in China. Data on demographics, lifestyle factors, health status and history of diseases were collected via structured interviews and laboratory tests. Smoking, heavy drinking, obesity, and physical inactivity were defined following standard guidelines. We performed descriptive analysis and logistic regressions in this study. RESULTS The overall prevalence of heavy drinking, obesity, current smoking, and physical inactivity among middle-aged and older adults was 7.23% (95% confidence interval 6.53-7.29%), 11.53% (10.43-12.62%), 27.46% (26.30-28.62%), and 44.06% (41.19-46.92%), respectively. The prevalence varied between rural and urban areas as well as among geographic areas, with higher prevalence in the Northern and Northeastern regions. Heavy drinking and obesity were significantly associated with incident hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol; while current smoking was significantly associated with incident hypertension. Compared with healthy individuals, participants who self-reported a diagnosis of hypertension, high cholesterol, or diabetes were less likely to smoke currently and drink alcohol heavily, but more likely to be physically inactive and obese. CONCLUSIONS Among Chinese middle-aged and older adults, the prevalence of behavioral risk factors varies by geographic region. Further effort is required to improve physical activity and fitness for Chinese adults, especially those with cardiometabolic conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Glioblastoma is one of the most lethal tumors in adult central nervous system with a median survival of a year and half and effective therapeutic strategy is urgently needed. For that reason, stem cell-based suicide gene therapies have attracted much interest because of potent tumor tropism of stem cells and bystander effect. In this current clinical situation, stem cells are promising delivery tool of suicide genes for glioma therapy. Since habitual cigarette smoking still prevails worldwide, we investigated the effect of nicotine on stem cell tropism toward glioma and gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) function between glioma and stem cells, both of which are important for suicide gene therapies. Methods: Mouse induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural stem cells (iPS-NSCs) and human dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells (DPSCs) were used. The effect of nicotine on tumor tropism to glioma-conditioned medium (CM) at a non-cytotoxic concentration was assessed with Matrigel invasion assay. Nicotine effect on GJIC was assessed with the scrape loading/dye transfer (SL/DT) assay for co-culture of glioma and stem cells and the parachute assay among glioma cells using high-content analysis. Results: Tumor tropism of iPS-NSCs toward GL261-CM and DPSCs toward U251-CM was not affected by nicotine (0.1 and 1 µM). Nicotine at the concentrations equivalent to habitual smoking (1 µM) did not affect GJIC of iPS-NSC/GL261 and DPSC/U251 and GJIC among each glioma cells. Conclusions: The study demonstrated that non-cytotoxic concentrations of nicotine did not significantly change the stem cell properties requisite for stem cell-based suicide gene therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco exposure (TE) is the major contributor for CVD mortality, but few published studies on CVD mortality attributable to TE have analyzed the potential reasons underlying long-term trends in China. Our studysought to find the potential reasons and compared CVD mortality attributable to TE in China, Japan, the United States of America (USA), and the world between 1990 and 2017. METHODS The mortality data in China, Japan, the USA, and the world were obtained from Global Burden of Disease Study 2017(GBD 2017). Joinpoint regression was used to assess the trend magnitude and directions over time for CVD mortality, while the age-period-cohort method was used to analyzethe temporal trends of CVD mortality according to age, period, and cohort. RESULTS A significant downward trend was found in the age-standardised mortality rate (ASMR) of CVD attributable to smoking in four regions. China had the smallest decline and the Chinese ASMR became the highest in 2017. All the annual net drifts in the four regions were negative and the local drifts were below zero. The longitudinal age curves of CVD mortality attributable to smoking increased in four regions,with China having the largest increase. The period or cohort RRs indicated a decline, and China had the smallest decline. The researchers further analyzed the IHD and stroke trends, finding that the morality and period or cohort RR of IHD in China was always at a high level. CONCLUSIONS CVD mortality attributable to TE declined in four regions, and was highest in China. The proportion of IHD mortality attributable to TE was similar to stroke, which significantly changed the traditional cognition of CVD composition, but the control measure was not sufficient for IHD in China.

Abstract
Monitoring the use of alcohol and tobacco in the population is important for public health planning and evaluating the efficacy of intervention strategies. The aim of this study was to use wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) to estimate alcohol and tobacco consumption in a number of major cities across China and compare WBE estimates with other data sources. Daily composite influent wastewater samples were collected from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) across China in 2014 (n = 53) and 2016 (n = 45). The population-normalized daily consumption estimated by WBE were compared with other data sources where available. The average consumption of alcohol was 8.1 ± 7.0 mL ethanol/person aged 15+/day (EPD) in the investigated cities of 2016 while those involved in 2014 had an average consumption of 4.7 ± 3.0 EPD. The average tobacco consumption was estimated to be 3.7 ± 2.2 cigarettes/person aged 15+/day (CPD) in 2016 and 3.1 ± 1.9 CPD in 2014. The changes in the average consumption in those cities from 2014 to 2016 were supported by the results from a limited number of WWTPs where samples were collected in both years. Consumption of alcohol and tobacco in urban China is at a medium level compared with other countries on a per capita basis. WBE estimates of tobacco consumption were relatively comparable with results of traditional surveys and sales statistics. WBE estimates of alcohol consumption were lower than WHO survey results, probably due to EtS degradation and uncertainty in the EtS excretion factor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Females are less willing than males to seek help from smoking cessation services; the present study examined how the use of these services by females could be enhanced by training young female ambassadors to deliver a brief intervention. METHODS We collaborated with the Hong Kong Girl Guides Association. Fifty of the association's Girl Guides served as smoking cessation and reduction ambassadors to deliver a brief intervention to at least two female smokers. The effectiveness of the intervention was evaluated by a one-group pre-test and repeated post-test design. We undertook data collection at baseline and at 1, 3 and 6 months. RESULTS In all, 106 female smokers received the brief intervention. At 6-month follow-up, the self-reported abstinence was 12.2%; the biochemically verified prevalence of quitting was 5.7%. Approximately 7% of participants were motivated to use smoking cessation services between baseline and 6 months. CONCLUSIONS This study supports the effectiveness of a brief intervention in promoting smoking cessation for community-living female smokers in Hong Kong. However, the intervention could be enhanced by further promoting the use of smoking cessation services to female smokers.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This study mapped the quitting patterns (trajectories) of Hong Kong Chinese women smokers who had received counselling via a quitline service and examined factors correlated with different trajectories. BACKGROUND Quitting smoking is always a gradual and progressive process. However, most existing studies on smoking cessation have adopted a cross-sectional approach to conduct evaluation. Little is known about the quitting trajectories of smokers, particularly those who are women after receiving smoking cessation counselling. METHODS We used a retrospective longitudinal design and analysed 474 women smokers who had called the quitline. Quitting trajectories were mapped using latent growth modelling. Multinomial logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with class membership. A STROBE checklist was completed. RESULTS We identified three trajectory groups: 'quitters' who quit smoking at 6 months and abstained from cigarettes up to 6 years; 'reducers' who cut down cigarette consumption ≥50% at 3 years and maintained reduced levels up to 6 years; and 'increasers' who increased smoking ≥20% at 3 years and continued smoking up to 6 years. Participants who perceived more difficulties in quitting were more likely to be increasers. Those with higher daily cigarette consumption at baseline were more likely to be reducers. CONCLUSIONS We clarified three trajectory groups of women smokers. The results indicate that existing cessation services need to be improved, especially for women smokers who do not quit after receiving telephone counselling. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Existing cessation services need to be improved, especially for women smokers who do not quit after receiving telephone counselling. For those who reduce smoking but fail to quit, quit plans should be developed that provide step-by-step guidance in achieving abstinence through smoking reduction. Instant messages may complement telephone counselling to deliver cessation support for those who increase their cigarette consumption.

Abstract
Objective To examine the associations between multiple health behaviours and health outcomes among older Chinese adults. Methods Data from the World Health Organization’s Study on global AGEing and adult health Wave 1 (2007–2010), collected among the older Chinese population, were included in this study. Smoking, diet, and physical activity were analysed by linear regression for any associations with depressive symptoms, quality of life (QoL), cognitive function, and physical function. Results A total of 13 367 participants aged >49 years were included in the analyses. After controlling for key socioeconomic factors, healthy diet was significantly associated with higher QoL (β = 0.099) and better cognitive function (β = 0.023). Physical activity was significantly associated with fewer depressive symptoms (β = –0.020), higher QoL (β = 0.086), better cognitive function (β = 0.072), and better physical function (β = –0.155 [higher scores = poorer physical function]). No relationship was found between smoking and any health-related outcome included in this study. Conclusion This study demonstrates the importance of healthy diet and physical activity for health outcomes in the older Chinese population.

Abstract
China has more than 300 million cigarette smokers and 1 million deaths every year attributed to smoking. Despite its huge economic implications, the lack of smoking and associated lifestyle-related data on China's outpatients makes it difficult for health care professionals to provide individualized assessments and targeted interventions. This study aimed to identify factors to inform nurse-led smoking behavioral assessments and cessation interventions. Clinical data from new patients attending the family medicine outpatient department from a large tertiary hospital in a major Southern China city were collected between March and December 2015. Data including basic demographics, medical history, vaccination history, current medication, and information on lifestyle risk factors were collected by frontline nurses during nursing assessment on their initial visit. Chi-square and Student's t tests were used as univariate analysis and post hoc regression analysis to explore which factors contributed toward smoking cessation. Of 7913 eligible visits, smokers and ex-smokers accounted for 13.5% and 2.4% of new patients, respectively, with a majority of them being young and male (gender ratio of 8:1) smokers. Multiple behavioral risks and comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus in smokers were common; for example, 17.9% of smokers were also current drinkers, making alcohol users 8.5 to 16.7 times more likely to have smoked. Ex-smokers were more likely to be divorced, to be ex-drinkers, or to have higher diastolic blood pressure and concurrent hypertension. Smoking and associated lifestyle risk assessments run by registered nurses should be incorporated into current outpatient health histories and in targeted smoking cessation intervention programs.

Abstract
Tobacco planting information is an important part of tobacco production management. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing systems have become a popular topic worldwide because they are mobile, rapid and economic. In this paper, an automatic identification method for tobacco fields based on UAV images is developed by combining supervised classifications with image morphological operations, and this method was used in the Yunnan Province, which is the top province for tobacco planting in China. The results show that the produce accuracy, user accuracy, and overall accuracy of tobacco field identification using the method proposed in this paper are 92.59%, 96.61% and 95.93%, respectively. The method proposed in this paper has the advantages of automation, flow process, high accuracy and easy operation, but the ground sampling distance (GSD) of the UAV image has an effect on the accuracy of the proposed method. When the image GSD was reduced to 1 m, the overall accuracy decreased by approximately 10%. To solve this problem, we further introduced the convolution method into the proposed method, which can ensure the recognition accuracy of tobacco field is above 90% when GSD is less than or equal to 1 m. Some other potential improvements of methods for mapping tobacco fields were also discussed in this paper.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The epidemiological characteristics of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the autonomous region of Xinjiang Uygur have been largely unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and demographic risk factors of SCD in Xinjiang, China. METHODS This retrospective study reviewed medical records from 11 regions in Xinjiang with different geography (north and south of the Tian Shan mountain range), gross domestic product, and ethnicity (Han, Uyghur, Kazakh, and Hui). SCD was defined as unexpected death due to cardiac reasons within 1 hour after the onset of acute symptoms, including sudden death, unexpected death, and nonviolent death. Monitoring was conducted throughout 2015. Demographic and mortality data were recorded and age-adjusted standardized risk ratio (SRR) was analyzed. RESULTS Among 3,224,103 residents, there were 13,308 all-cause deaths and 1244 events of SCD (784 men and 460 women; overall incidence 38.6 per 100,000 residents). SCD was associated with age (χ2 = 2105.3), but not geography. Men had an increased risk of SCD compared with women (SRR: 1.75, 95% CI: 1.10-2.79). The risk of SCD was highest in residents of the Uyghur (SRR: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.05-2.42) and Kazakh (SRR: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.29-2.87) compared with those of the Han. Poor economic development was associated with elevated risk of SCD (SRR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.02-2.38). CONCLUSION SCD is an important public health issue in China. Our understanding of the demographic differences on SCD in Xinjiang, China may improve the risk stratification and management to reduce the incidence and lethality of SCD.

Abstract
Tobacco smoking is recognized as a major preventable cause of disease worldwide and is linked to 6 million deaths annually, 30% of which are due to cancer. The negative health consequences of smoking currently represent one of the greatest global public health challenges. Additionally, secondhand smoke, which was declared carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2004, is a major source of morbidity and premature death in nonsmokers, particularly children. Negative health effects associated with exposure to secondhand smoke have been well documented and include lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and other respiratory diseases. International and national policies to implement cost-effective strategies to curtail smoking will have a significant impact on population health and will protect nonsmokers. Effective interventions, such as smoking bans, tobacco price increases, easy access to tobacco cessation treatments, and anti-tobacco media campaigns, should continue. Reducing tobacco use would be a major step towards the goal of decreasing health disparities by 2030, as 80% of the projected tobacco-related deaths will occur in low and middle-income countries.

Abstract
In this paper, a simple and reliable method has been established to determine the residues of nine pesticides in tobacco by using GC-MS coupled with magnetic solid phase extraction. A novel magnetic Zr-MOF nanocomposite based on graphene was synthesized, and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy and N2 adsorption-desorption measurements. The prepared material has the advantage of large surface area (178 m2/g), good magnetic response and high thermal stability, which is shown to be suited for the fast enrichment of multi-pesticides in tobacco matrix. The extraction conditions including amount of adsorbent, adsorption time, eluting solvent as well as desorption time were investigated. The whole process of pretreatment is accomplished within 10 min. This method shows low limit of detection, wide linear range and good reproducibility (relative standard deviations <12.7%), satisfactory recoveries were obtained, ranging from 57.9% to 126.3% for tobacco samples.

Abstract
The aim was to study the variation trends of all-cause and cancer mortality during 1984⁻2013 in Macheng City, China. The mortality data were collected from Macheng City disease surveillance points system and Hubei Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The model life table system was used to adjust mortality rates due to an under-reporting problem. An age-period-cohort model and intrinsic estimator algorithm were used to estimate the age effect, period effect, and cohort effect of all-cause mortality and cancer mortality for males and females. Age effect of all-cause mortality for both sexes increased with age, while the age effect of cancer mortality for both sexes reached a peak at the age group of 55⁻59 years old and then decreased. The relative risks (RRs) of all-cause mortality for males and females declined with the period and decreased by 51.13% and 63.27% during the whole study period, respectively. Furthermore, the period effect of cancer mortality in both sexes decreased at first and then increased. The cohort effect of all-cause and cancer mortality for both sexes born after 1904 presented the pattern of "rise first and then fall," and decreased by 82.18% and 90.77% from cohort 1904⁻1908 to 1989⁻1993, respectively; especially, the risk of all-cause and cancer mortality for both sexes born before 1949 was much higher than that for those born after 1949.

Abstract
Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a clinically "silent," but emergent and life-threatening cardiovascular disease, and hereditary factors play an important etiologic role in the development of AAD. The purposes of this study are to definitize the diagnostic yield of 59 AAD patients, investigate the molecular pathological spectrum of AAD by NGS, and explore the future preclinical prospects of genetic diagnosis on AAD high-risk groups. We performed next-generation sequencing (NGS) based on screening of the 69 currently aortic dissections/aneurysms-associated genes on 59 sporadic AAD samples from South China. A Kaplan-Meier survival curve was constructed to compare the event-free survival depending on variant number. Overall, 67 variants were detected in 39 patients, among which 4 patients were identified with pathogenic variants and 13 patients were diagnosed with likely pathogenic variants. Seventeen genotype positive patients were identified in aggregate, and the diagnostic yield of our study is 28.8%. All genotype-positive variants were distributed in 11 genes, FBN1 variants were in the largest number among genotype-positive variants, which were detected for 4 times, ACTA2 for 3 times, ABCC6 and TGFBR1 twice, and NOS3, MYLK, XYLT1, TIMP4, TGFBR2, CNTN3, and PON1 once. Individuals with three or more variants showed shorter mean event-free survival than patients with fewer variants. Our observations broaden the genetic pathological spectrum of AAD. Furthermore, our research uncovered two susceptibility genes FBN1 and ACTA2 for Stanford type A AAD patients. Finally, our study concluded that the number of variants an individual harbored was an important consideration in risk stratification for individualized prediction and disease diagnosis.
