Metal-tolerant morganella morganii isolates can potentially mediate nickel stress tolerance in Arabidopsis by upregulating antioxidative enzyme activities

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) have been utilized to immobilize heavy metals, limiting their translocation in metal contaminated settings. However, studies on the mechanisms and interactions that elucidate how PGPRs mediate Nickel (Ni) tolerance in plants are rare. Thus, in this study we investigated how two pre-characterized heavy metal tolerant isolates of Morganella morganii (ABT9 and ABT3) improve Ni stress tolerance in Arabidopsis while enhancing its growth and yield. Arabidopsis seedlings were grown for five weeks in control/Ni contaminated (control, 1.5 mM and 2.5 mM) potted soil, in the presence or absence of PGPRs. Plant growth characteristics, quantum yield, and antioxidative enzymatic activities were analyzed to assess the influence of PGPRs on plant physiology. Oxidative stress tolerance was quantified by measuring MDA accumulation in Arabidopsis plants. As expected, Ni stress substantially reduced plant growth (shoot and root fresh weight by 53.25% and 58.77%, dry weight by 49.80% and 57.41% and length by 47.16% and 64.63% over control), chlorophyll content and quantum yield (by 40.21% and 54.37% over control). It also increased MDA content by 84.28% at higher (2.5 mM) Ni concentrations. In contrast, inoculation with M. morganii led to significant improvements in leaf chlorophyll, quantum yield, and Arabidopsis biomass production. The mitigation of adverse effects of Ni stress on biomass observed in M. morganii-inoculated plants was attributed to the enhancement of antioxidative enzyme activities compared to Ni-treated plants. This upregulation of the antioxidative defense mechanism mitigated Ni-induced oxidative stress, leading to improved performance of the photosynthetic machinery, which, in turn, enhanced chlorophyll content and quantum yield. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of these tolerance-inducing processes will help to complete the picture of PGPRs-mediated defense signaling. Thus, it suggests that M. morganii PGPRs candidate can potentially be utilized for plant growth promotion by reducing oxidative stress via upregulating antioxidant defense systems in Ni-contaminated soils and reducing Ni metal uptake.

Silver nanoparticles from orange peel extract: Colorimetric detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions with a chemometric approach

Green silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@OPE) were obtained by using orange (citrus sinensis) peel water extract (OPE) that acts as a reducing and capping agent. This procedure permits the valorisation of waste as orange peel, and lowers the environmental impact of the process, with respect to the conventional synthetic procedure. The OPE extract reduced Ag(I) to Ag(0) in alkaline conditions, and stabilised the produced nanoparticles as a capping agent. The AgNPs@OPE were deeply characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, SEM analysis and DLS analysis and successively used as colorimetric sensors for different metals in aqueous solution. The colourimetric assay showed that AgNPs@OPE were able to detect Pb2+ and Cd2+, as demonstrated by the splits of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band accompanied by the formation of a second new band; these spectral modification resulted in a colour change, from pristine nanoparticles' yellow to brown, due to the aggregation process. For the quantification of each of the two target cations, a calibration was performed by using the univariate linear regression, within the linearity ranges, exploiting the absorbance ratio between the main SPR band and the new band relative to the aggregate formation. Then a multivariate approach was followed to perform both Cd2+ and Pb2+ quantification by means of Partial Least Square regression (PLS) and target cations distinction by Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) applied on Principal Components Analysis (PCA) outputs, in both cases using the entire UV-Vis spectra (350-800 nm) as input data. Finally, the ability to quantify and distinguish between Cd2+ and Pb2+ was tested in tap water samples spiked with the two cations in order to confirm the application of the AgNPs@OPE as selective sensor in real samples.

A novel one-stepped synthesized Schiff-base fluorescence probe for specific recognition of zinc ions with highly sensitive and its application in living cells

Fluorescent turn-on receptors are extensively employed for the detection of Zn ions contamination in the environment due to its simplicity, convenience and portability. However, developing highly sensitive and cell-imageable fluorescent turn-on probe for the recognition of Zn ions in living organisms remains a significant challenge. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a novel Schiff base probe (H2L) with a significant fluorescence turn-on response (Zn ions) by one-step synthetic method. In this work, H2L exhibited high sensitivity to Zn2+ ions upon interaction with various common metal ions in HEPES buffer solution. Its detection limit is 1.87 × 10-7 M, which is lower than the requirement of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The fluorescence titration and Job's plot analysis suggested a 1:1 binding ratio between the probe and Zn ion, and the single-crystal structures obtained further confirmed this inference. In addition, the fluorescent sensor demonstrated recyclability, maintaining its fluorescence intensity for up to 6 cycles without significant decrease, which holds promise for future investigations on reversible fluorescent chemosensors. Notably, fluorescence imaging experiments demonstrated that H2L could be successfully used for the detection of Zn2+ in live cells.

Assessment of heavy metal contamination in the surface sediments, seawater and organisms of the Pearl River Estuary, South China Sea

Coastal heavy-metal contamination poses significant risks to marine ecosystems and human health, necessitating comprehensive research for effective mitigation strategies. This study assessed heavy-metal pollution in sediments, seawater, and organisms in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), with a focus on Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Hg, and Cr. A notable reduction in heavy metal concentrations in surface sediments was observed in 2020 compared to 2017 and 2018, likely due to improved pollution management and COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Spatial analysis revealed a positive correlation between elevated heavy-metal concentrations (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, and As) and areas with significant human activity. Source analysis indicated that anthropogenic activities accounted for 63 % of the heavy metals in sediments, originating from industrial effluents, metal processing, vehicular activities, and fossil fuel combustion. Cd presented a high ecological risk due to its significant enrichment in surface sediments. Organisms in the PRE were found to be relatively enriched with Hg and Cu, with average As concentrations slightly exceeding the Chinese food-health criterion. This study identified high-risk ecological zones and highlighted Cd as the primary pollutant in the PRE. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of recent pollution control measures and emphasize the need for ongoing monitoring and mitigation to safeguard marine ecosystems and human health.

Fluorescent aptasensors for sensitive detection of lead ions based on structure-switching DNA beacon probe and exonuclease I-mediated signal amplification

Herein, two simple fluorescent signal-on sensing strategies for detecting lead ions (Pb2+) were established based on structure-switching aptamer probes and exonuclease-assisted signal amplification strategies. Two hairpin-structure fluorescent probes with blunt-ended stem arms were designed by extending the base sequence of Pb2+ aptamer (PS2.M) and labelling the probes with FAM (in probe 1) and 2-aminopurine (2-AP) (in probe 2), respectively. In method 1, graphene oxide (GO) was added to adsorb probe 1 and quench the fluorescence emission of FAM to achieve low fluorescent background. In method 2, fluorescent 2-AP molecule inserted into the double-stranded DNA of probe 2 was quenched as a result of base stacking interactions, leading to a simplified, quencher-free approach. The addition of Pb2+ can induce the probes to transform into G-quadruplex structures, exposing single DNA strands at the 3' end (the extended sequences). This exposure enables the activation of exonuclease I (Exo I) on the probes, leading to the cleavage effect and subsequent release of free bases and fluorophores, thereby resulting in amplified fluorescence signals. The two proposed methods exhibit good specificity and sensitivity, with detection limits of 0.327 nM and 0.049 nM Pb2+ for method 1 and method 2, respectively, and have been successfully applied to detect Pb2+ in river water and fish samples. Both detection methods employ the structure-switching aptamer probes and can be completed in two or three steps without the need for complex analytical instruments. Therefore, they have a broad prospect in the sensitive and simple detection of lead ion contamination in food and environmental samples.

PM10-bound trace elements in pan-European urban atmosphere

Although many studies have discussed the impact of Europe's air quality, very limited research focused on the detailed phenomenology of ambient trace elements (TEs) in PM10 in urban atmosphere. This study compiled long-term (2013-2022) measurements of speciation of ambient urban PM10 from 55 sites of 7 countries (Switzerland, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, UK), aiming to elucidate the phenomenology of 20 TEs in PM10 in urban Europe. The monitoring sites comprised urban background (UB, n = 26), traffic (TR, n = 10), industrial (IN, n = 5), suburban background (SUB, n = 7), and rural background (RB, n = 7) types. The sampling campaigns were conducted using standardized protocols to ensure data comparability. In each country, PM10 samples were collected over a fixed period using high-volume air samplers. The analysis encompassed the spatio-temporal distribution of TEs, and relationships between TEs at each site. Results indicated an annual average for the sum of 20 TEs of 90 ± 65 ng/m3, with TR and IN sites exhibiting the highest concentrations (130 ± 66 and 131 ± 80 ng/m3, respectively). Seasonal variability in TEs concentrations, influenced by emission sources and meteorology, revealed significant differences (p < 0.05) across all monitoring sites. Estimation of TE concentrations highlighted distinct ratios between non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic metals, with Zn (40 ± 49 ng/m3), Ti (21 ± 29 ng/m3), and Cu (23 ± 35 ng/m3) dominating non-carcinogenic TEs, while Cr (5 ± 7 ng/m3), and Ni (2 ± 6 ng/m3) were prominent among carcinogenic ones. Correlations between TEs across diverse locations and seasons varied, in agreement with differences in emission sources and meteorological conditions. This study provides valuable insights into TEs in pan-European urban atmosphere, contributing to a comprehensive dataset for future environmental protection policies.

A comprehensive study of source apportionment, spatial distribution, and health risks assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in the surface soils of a semi-arid mining region in Matehuala, Mexico

BACKGROUND

This study investigates the contamination level, spatial distribution, pollution sources, potential ecological risks, and human health risks associated with heavy metal(loid)s (i.e., arsenic (As), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)) in surface soils within the mining region of Matehuala, located in central Mexico.

OBJECTIVES

The primary objectives are to estimate the contamination level of heavy metal(loid)s, identify pollution sources, assess potential ecological risks, and evaluate human health risks associated with heavy metal(loid) contamination.

METHODS

Soil samples from the study area were analysed using various indices including Igeo, Cf, PLI, mCd, EF, and PERI to evaluate contamination levels. Source apportionment of heavy metal(loid)s was conducted using the APCS-MLR and PMF receptor models. Spatial distribution patterns were determined using the most efficient interpolation technique among five different approaches. The total carcinogenic risk index (TCR) and total non-carcinogenic index (THI) were used in this study to assess the potential carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic hazards posed by heavy metal(loid)s in surface soil to human health.

RESULTS

The study reveals a high contamination level of heavy metal(loid)s in the surface soil, posing considerable ecological risks. As was identified as a priority metal for regulatory control measures. Mining and smelting activities were identified as the primary factors influencing heavy metal(loid) distributions. Based on spatial distribution mapping, concentrations were higher in the northern, western, and central regions of the study area. As and Fe were found to pose considerable and moderate ecological risks, respectively. Health risk evaluation indicated significant levels of carcinogenic risks for both adults and children, with higher risks for children.

CONCLUSION

This study highlights the urgent need for monitoring heavy metal(loid) contamination in Matehuala's soils, particularly in regions experiencing strong economic growth, to mitigate potential human health and ecological risks associated with heavy metal(loid) pollution.

Experimental investigation of Cd (II) ion adsorption on surface-modified mixed seaweed Biosorbent: A study on analytical interpretation and thermodynamics

Despite advancements in wastewater treatment technologies, heavy metal contamination, especially cadmium (Cd), severely threatens human health and ecosystems. The purpose of this work is to compare the removal of Cd (II) ions from aqueous solutions by chemically modified mixed seaweed biosorbent (CMSB) and physically modified mixed seaweed biosorbent (PMSB). BET, SEM, EDAX, FTIR, and XRD techniques characterized the mixed seaweed biosorbents before and after adsorption. They are well-known for their sustainability, affordability, and biodegradability. The BET study revealed that CMSB had a surface area of 19.682 m2/g, while PMSB had a lower surface area of 14.803 m2/g. The optimum adsorption conditions were a temperature of 303 K, pH of 6.0, and biosorbent dosages of 1 g/L for CMSB and 2.5 g/L for PMSB. For CMSB and PMSB, the most efficient contact times were 40 and 80 min, respectively. The Langmuir model was demonstrated to be the best fit for the experimental data when compared to other isotherm models, with a coefficient of determination, or R2, of 0.9713 and a maximum monolayer capacity of 151.2 mg/g and 181.6 mg/g for physical and chemical activated mixed seaweed biomass. There was a significant relationship between the R2 values of chemically modified and physically modified biomass. The findings demonstrate that pseudo-second-order kinetics more accurately represent the adsorption process than pseudo-first-order and Elovich models. Thermodynamic experiments validated the endothermic, spontaneous and favourable characteristics of the removal process. According to the results of the current study, PMSB and CMSB may be used as effective adsorbents to remove Cd (II) from aqueous solutions.

Heavy metal ion sensing strategies using fluorophores for environmental remediation

The main aim of this review is to provide a holistic summary of the latest advances within the research area focusing on the detection of heavy metal ion pollution, particularly the sensing strategies. The review explores various heavy metal ion detection approaches, encompassing spectrometry, electrochemical methods, and optical techniques. Numerous initiatives have been undertaken in recent times in response to the increasing demand for fast, sensitive, and selective sensors. Notably, fluorescent sensors have acquired prominence owing to the numerous advantages such as good specificity, reversibility, and sensitivity. Further, this review also explores the advantages of various nanomaterials employed in sensing heavy metal ions. In this regard, exclusive emphasis is placed on fluorescent nanomaterials based on organic dyes, quantum dots, and fluorescent aptasensors for metal ion removal from aqueous systems, and to identify the fate of heavy metal ions in the natural environment.

Dissecting the mechanism of synergistic interactions between Aspergillus fumigatus and the microalgae Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 under Cd(II) exposure: insights from untargeted metabolomics

Co-culturing fungi and microalgae may effectively remediate wastewater containing Cd and harvest microalgae. Nevertheless, a detailed study of the mechanisms underlying the synergistic interactions between fungi and microalgae under Cd(II) exposure is lacking. In this study, Cd(II) exposure resulted in a significant enhancement of antioxidants, such as glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) compared to the control group, suggesting that the cellular antioxidant defense response was activated. Extracellular proteins and extracellular polysaccharides of the symbiotic system were increased by 60.61 % and ,24.29 %, respectively, after Cd(II) exposure for 72 h. The adsorption behavior of Cd(II) was investigated using three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Metabolomics results showed that the TCA cycle provided effective material and energy supply for the symbiotic system to resist the toxicity of Cd(II); Proline, histidine, and glutamine strengthened the synergistic adsorption capacity of the fungus and microalgae. Overall, the theoretical foundation for a deep comprehension of the beneficial interactions between fungi and microalgae under Cd(II) exposure and the role of the fungal-algal symbiotic system in the management of heavy metal pollution is provided by this combined physiological and metabolomic investigation.

Low-level, chronic ingestion of lead and cadmium: The unspoken danger for at-risk populations

The long-term effects of low-level, chronic exposure to lead and cadmium through ingestion are often overlooked, despite the urgency surrounding the clinical onset and worsening of certain pathologies caused by these metals. This work reviews current legislation, global ingestion levels, and blood levels in the general population to emphasize the need for reactivity towards this exposure, especially in at-risk populations, including patients with early-stage renal and chronic kidney disease. Global data indicates persistent chronic ingestion of lead and cadmium, with no decreasing trend in recent years, and a daily consumption of tens of micrograms worldwide. Moreover, the average blood lead and cadmium levels in the general population are concerning in many countries with some significantly exceeding healthy limits, particularly for children. Technologies developed to cleanse soil and prevent heavy metal contamination in food are not yet applicable on a global scale and remain financially inaccessible for many communities. Addressing this chronic ingestion at the human level may prove more beneficial in delaying the onset of associated clinical pathologies or preventing them all together.

Hydrochar as a bio-based adsorbent for heavy metals removal: A review of production processes, adsorption mechanisms, kinetic models, regeneration and reusability

The spread of heavy metals throughout the ecosystem has extremely endangered human health, animals, plants, and natural resources. Hydrochar has emerged as a promising adsorbent for removal of heavy metals from water and wastewater. Hydrochar, obtained from hydrothermal carbonization of biomass, owns unique physical and chemical properties that are highly potent in capturing heavy metals via surface complexation, electrostatic interactions, and ion exchange mechanisms. This review focuses on removing heavy metals by hydrochar adsorbents from water bodies. The article discusses factors affecting the adsorption capacity of hydrochars, such as contact time, pH, initial metal concentration, temperature, and competing ions. Literature on optimization approaches such as surface modification, composite development, and hybrid systems are reviewed to enlighten mechanisms undertaking the efficiency of hydrochars in heavy metals removal from wastewater. The review also addresses challenges such as hydrochar regeneration and reusability, alongside potential issues related to its disposal and metal leaching. Integration with current water purification methods and the significance of ongoing research and initiatives promoting hydrochar-based technologies were also outlined. The article concludes that combining hydrochar with modern technologies such as nanotechnology and advanced oxidation techniques holds promise for improving heavy metal remediation. Overall, this comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights to guide future studies and foster the development of effective, affordable, and environmentally friendly heavy metal removal technologies to ensure the attainment of safer drinking water for communities worldwide.

Relationship between exposure to heavy metals on the increased health risk and carcinogenicity of urinary tract (kidney and bladder)

In today's society, with the continuous development of manufacturing industries and factories related to chemicals, the amount of heavy metals in the inhaled air of humans, water and even food consumption has increased dramatically. The aim of this study was investigation of relationship between exposure to heavy metals on the increased carcinogenicity risk of kidney and bladder. Databases used to for searched were the Springer, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct (Scopus) and PubMed. At the end after sieve we selected 20 papers. Identify all relevant studies published 2000-2021. The results of this study showed that exposure to heavy metals due to the bio accumulative properties of these metals can cause kidney and bladder abnormalities and provide the basis through various mechanisms for malignant tumors in these organs. Based on result this study, since a limited number of heavy metals including copper, iron, zinc and nickel in very small amounts as micronutrients play a very important role in the function of enzymes and the body cells biological reactions, but exposure to some of them like arsenic, lead, vanadium and mercury will cause irreversible effects on people's health and cause various diseases including cancers of the liver, pancreas, prostate, breast, kidney and bladder. The kidneys, ureter and bladder are the most important organs in the urinary tract on human. According to the result of this study, the duty of this urinary system is to remove toxins, chemicals and heavy metals from the blood, balance electrolytes, excrete excess fluid, produce urine and transfer it to the bladder. This mechanism causes the kidneys and bladder to be highly associated with these toxins and heavy metals, which can lead to various diseases in these two important organs. According to the finding the reducing exposure to heavy metals in various ways can prevent many diseases related to this system and reduce the incidence of kidney and bladder cancers.

An activatable fluorescence probe for rapid detection and in situ imaging of β-galactosidase activity in cabbage roots under heavy metal stress

β-Galactosidase (β-gal), an enzyme related to cell wall degradation, plays an important role in regulating cell wall metabolism and reconstruction. However, activatable fluorescence probes for the detection and imaging of β-gal fluctuations in plants have been less exploited. Herein, we report an activatable fluorescent probe based on intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), benzothiazole coumarin-bearing β-galactoside (BC-βgal), to achieve distinct in situ imaging of β-gal in plant cells. It exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity to β-gal with a fast response (8 min). BC-βgal can be used to efficiently detect the alternations of intracellular β-gal levels in cabbage root cells with considerable imaging integrity and imaging contrast. Significantly, BC-βgal can assess β-gal activity in cabbage roots under heavy metal stress (Cd2+, Cu2+, and Pb2+), revealing that β-gal activity is negatively correlated with the severity of heavy metal stress. Our work thus facilitates the study of β-gal biological mechanisms.

Characterization of lung function impairment and pathological changes induced by chronic lead and cadmium inhalation: Insights from a mouse model study

Exposure to environmental heavy metals such as lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) is a global concern due to their widespread presence. However, the specific pulmonary effects of inhaled exposure, especially related to long-term effects, remain poorly understood. In this study, we developed a novel mouse model of Pb and Cd inhalation to mimic real-world conditions and investigate pulmonary effects. Mice were exposed to Pb and Cd inhalation for 6 months using a whole-body exposure system, resulting in decreased lung compliance and progression from emphysematous changes to fibrosis. In addition, the blood Pb/Cd levels of mice exposed to Pb/Cd for 6 months are like those of humans occupationally exposed to heavy metals. Histology revealed inflammation and collagen deposition. Transcriptomic analysis highlighted immune responses and macrophage activity in developing fibrosis. These results confirm an association between Pb/Cd exposure and emphysema and fibrosis, reflecting clinical findings. The study highlights the importance of long-term exposure assessment and time-course analysis for understanding Pb/Cd-induced lung disease. The relevance of the mouse model in replicating human exposure scenarios underscores its value in studying fibrosis and emphysema simultaneously. These findings provide a basis for targeted therapeutic interventions against heavy metal-induced lung injury.

Genetic Adaptations and Mechanistic Insights Into Bacterial Bioremediation in Ecosystems

Metal pollution poses significant threats to the ecosystem and human health, demanding effective remediation strategies. Bioremediation, which leverages the unique metal-resistant genes found in bacteria, offers a cost-effective and efficient solution to heavy metal contamination. Genes such as Cad, Chr, Cop, and others provide pathways to improve the detoxification of the ecosystem. Through multiple techniques, genetic engineering makes bacterial genomes more capable of improving metal detoxification; nonetheless, there are still unanswered questions regarding the nature of new metal-resistant genes. This article examines bacteria's complex processes to detoxify toxic metals, including biosorption, bioaccumulation, bio-precipitation, and bioleaching. It also explores essential genes, proteins, signaling mechanisms, and bacterial biomarkers involved in breaking toxic metals.

Cadmium-induced pancreatic toxicity in rats: comparing vitamin C and Nigella sativa as protective agents: a histomorphometric and ultrastructural study

The study aimed to assess the toxic effect of cadmium (Cd) on the exocrine and endocrine functions of pancreas, the changes in pancreatic tissue after Cd withdrawal, and the protective effects of vitamin C (VC) and Nigella sativa (NS) against Cd-induced damage. Rats were assigned to: control, Cd-treated (0.5 mg/kg/d intraperitoneal [IP] injection), VC and Cd-treated (receiving 100 mg/kg/d VC orally and Cd concomitantly), NS and Cd-treated (receiving 20 mg/kg/d NS and Cd, simultaneously), and Cd withdrawal (receiving Cd for 30 d then living free for recovery for other 30 d). Blood samples were collected and post-sacrifice pancreatic specimens were processed for light and electron microscope study. Quantitative analyses of pancreatic collagen area%, pancreatic islet parameters, β cell density, and insulin immunoexpression were done. Fasting blood glucose was significantly increased in Cd-treated and Cd-withdrawal groups, while co-treatment with VC and NS caused significant reductions (p < 0.05). Cd-induced extensive degenerative changes in pancreatic acini and islets at light and ultrastructure levels. Obvious fibrosis and congestion of blood vessels were noticed. Significant reductions in pancreatic islet number, volume, and surface area and diminished beta cell count and insulin immunoexpression were observed. After withdrawal of Cd, the whole pancreatic tissue still showed a serious impact. Concomitant treatment with VC or NS obviously reduced these degenerative changes and significantly improved pancreatic islet parameters and insulin immunoexpression. VC showed a better amendment than NS, but this difference was statistically insignificant. Therefore, VC and NS could be used as prophylactic agents that lessen Cd consequences on the pancreas.

Application of soil amendments to reduce the transfer of trace metal elements from contaminated soils of Lubumbashi (Democratic Republic of the Congo) to vegetables

The extraction of copper and cobalt from mines has led to the contamination of agricultural soils by trace metal elements (TMEs) (e.g. Cu: 204 to 1355 mg/kg). The mining industry is one of the sources of metal discharges into the environment, contributing to water, soil, and air contamination and causing metabolic disorders in the inhabitants of the city of Lubumbashi (R.D. Congo). This study assessed the effectiveness of organocalcareous soil improvers applied to TME-contaminated soils to reduce their transfer to plants. Following a factorial design, increasing doses of organic soil improvers (chicken droppings and sawdust) and agricultural lime were applied to the soils of three market gardens (high, medium, and low Cu contamination). The experiment was monitored for 60 days. Soil physicochemical properties (pH, TOC, and total and available copper, cobalt, lead, cadmium, and zinc (mg/kg)) were determined for the three gardens and in the vegetable biomass. The daily consumption index of the vegetables was determined based on total TME content. The results show that organocalcareous soil improvers did not promote plant growth and survival on soils with high and medium levels of copper contamination. However, on soils with low copper content, organocalcareous soil improvers improved germination and plant survival and reduced the transfer of metals from the soil to the plants. The best germination and plant survival rates were obtained with the lightly contaminated market garden. In addition, the organo-limestone amendments applied to the soils slightly increased the soil pH from acidic to slightly acidic, with pH values ranging from (5.43 ± 0.07 to 7.26 ± 0.33). The daily vegetable consumption index obtained for cobalt in the low-contaminated garden ranged from (0.029 to 0.465 mg/60 kg/day), i.e. from 0.5 to 8.45 times higher than the FAO/WHO limit, unlike the other trace metals (Cd, Cu and Pb) for which the daily consumption index found was lower than the FAO/WHO limit. Organocalcareous soil improvers can only be applied to soils with low levels of TME contamination, but for soils with medium to high levels of metal contamination, new soilless production techniques such as hydroponics or bioponics are needed.

Trace elements and heavy metal(loid)s triggering ecological risks in a heavily polluted river-reservoir system of Central Mexico: Probabilistic approaches

The contamination of trace elements and heavy metal(loid)s in water bodies has emerged as a global environmental concern due to their high toxicity at low concentrations to both biota and humans. This study aimed to evaluate the ecological risk associated with the occurrence and spatial distribution of Mn, Fe, Co, Cd, Ni, Zn, Sb, As, Tl, Cu, Pb, U, and V in heavily polluted waters of an important river-reservoir system (Atoyac River Basin) in central Mexico, using two-level tired probabilistic approaches: Risk Quotient based on Species Sensitivity Distribution (RQSSD) and Joint Probability Curves (JPCs). The concentrations of these elements varied widely, ranging from 0.055 μg L-1 to 9,200 μg L-1 and from 0.056 μg L-1 to 660 μg L-1, in both total and dissolved fractions, respectively. Although geogenic and anthropogenic sources contribute to the presence of these elements in waters, the discharge of untreated or poorly treated industrial wastewater is the main source of contamination. In this regard, the RQSSD results indicated high ecological risk for Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, and Sb, and medium or low ecological risk for As, Tl, U, and V at almost all sampling sites. The highest RQSSD values were found downstream of a large industrial corridor for Co, Zn, Tl, Pb, and V, with Tl, Pb, and V escalating to higher risk levels, highlighting the negative impact of industrial contamination on biota. The JPC results for these elements are consistent with the RQSSD approach, indicating an ecological risk to species from Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, and Sb in waters of the Atoyac River Basin. Therefore, the results of this study offer a thorough assessment of pollution risk, providing valuable insights for legislators on managing and mitigating exposure.

Soil heavy metals contamination and health risk of an endemic plant in southeast of Damavand Mt., Iran

Considering the toxicological effects of some heavy metals (HMs) in which directly related to mortality and carcinogenicity in the population by their entrance from plants through livestock grazing, and medical skin cream, the rehabilitation of contaminated sites through phytoremediation by native plants might be quite challenging. Diplotaenia damavandica Mozaff. ex-Hedge & Lamond, is used as medical skin creams due to the existence of specific ingredients, which can be effective in treating skin disease. In the present study, the plant and associated soil sampling were performed around the boundary of D. damavandica. The concentration was measured using the Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results revealed the effect of existing endemic plants on reducing the average concentration of lead and zinc in soil by 40 and 60%, respectively, due to phytoremediation. EDX confirmed the presence of Pb and Zn in root and shoot tissues. Based on the results of this study, D. damavandica is an endemic perennial herbaceous plant with 60% biomass and prosperous root systems, which can grow in low contaminated areas of Pb in the southeast of Damavand Mt. Hence, the HMs pattern indicated less often in the aerial parts except for lead, which should be examined more carefully for skin cream uses.

Assessment of heavy metals and proximate composition in jellyfish (Lobonemoides robustus Stiasny, 1920) collected from Cox's Bazar coast: Human health risk assessment

Jellyfish are known for experiencing periodic blooms in population, which occur when their density increases suddenly. The present study assessed the level of heavy metals and proximate composition in the jellyfish Lobonemoides robustus collected from Cox's Bazar coast of Bangladesh. This is the first study conducted in Bangladesh. Most of the studied metals were not possible to detect in L. robustus samples because concentrations were below the detection limit. Ca, Na, Se, and Mg were found to have safe levels in the L. robustus while the amount of Pb was recorded 0.39 ppm. The findings of Target Hazard Quotient, and Carcinogenic Risk indicate that the L. robustus is safe for human consumption (both for children and adults). Hence, it is suitable for consumption and can be exported. This study emphasizes the need for regular marine environment monitoring to ensure that the seafood harvested from these waters is safe for consumption.

A 'click' based fluorescent probe mimicking the IMPLICATION logic gate for Cu(II) and Pb(II) sensing: DFT and molecular docking studies

'Click' derived 1,2,3-triazole appended scaffolds are intriguing candidates for selective metal ion recognition because of their stereospecificity and efficiency. The presented report uses the 'click' approach to introduce a glyoxal bis-(2-hydroxyanil)-based chemosensor probe (GT) via the CuAAC pathway, which can selectively detect Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions, both of which are among the most hazardous and perturbing environmental pollutants. NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry (LCMS) were used to successfully characterize the synthesized probe. The discerning recognition behaviour of the probe for Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions was established through a chemosensing investigation using fluorescence and UV-vis spectroscopy, wherein the fluorescence spectral analysis demonstrated the probe to mimic the IMPLICATION logic gate. Furthermore, the metal-ligand interaction was also validated by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy of the synthesized GT-metal complex, and UV-vis spectroscopy was also employed to analyze the effect of time and temperature on the capacity of the probe to bind with Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions. Furthermore, the sensor's atherosclerosis-inhibition potential was investigated in silico utilizing docking analysis with tribbles-1 protein, and a density functional theory (DFT) study enhanced the understanding of its structure using the B3LYP functional and the 6311G++(d,p) basis set.

Electrochemical microfluidic sensing platforms for biosecurity analysis

Biosecurity encompasses the health and safety of humans, animals, plants, and the environment. In this article, "biosecurity" is defined as encompassing the comprehensive aspects of human, animal, plant, and environmental safety. Reliable biosecurity testing technology is the key point for effectively assessing biosecurity risks and ensuring biosecurity. Therefore, it is crucial to develop excellent detection technologies to detect risk factors that can affect biosecurity. An electrochemical microfluidic biosensing platform integrates fluid control, target recognition, signal transduction, and output and incorporates the advantages of electrochemical analysis technology and microfluidic technology. Thus, an electrochemical microfluidic biosensing platform, characterized by exceptional analytical sensitivity, portability, rapid analysis speed, low reagent consumption, and low risk of contamination, shows considerable promise for biosecurity detection compared to traditional, more complex, and time-consuming detection technologies. This review provides a concise introduction to electrochemical microfluidic biosensors and biosecurity. It highlights recent research advances in utilizing electrochemical microfluidic biosensing platforms to assess biosecurity risk factors. It includes the use of electrochemical microfluidic biosensors for the detection of risk factors directly endangering biosecurity (direct application: namely, risk factors directly endangering the health of human, animals, and plants) and for the detection of risk factors indirectly endangering biosecurity (indirect application: namely, risk factors endangering the safety of food and the environment). Finally, we outline the current challenges and future perspectives of electrochemical microfluidic biosensing platforms.

Lethal effects and sex-specific tolerance of copper and cadmium in the buff-tailed bumble bee

Exposure to environmental pollutants, including trace metals, is a major driver of bee decline worldwide. While pesticides undergo standardised risk assessments (i.e., LD50) and the implementation of online databases, no such approaches exist for trace metals. Here, using acute oral exposure, we determined the LC50, LD50, and mass-standardised LD50 of copper and cadmium, essential and non-essential metals, respectively, in workers and males of the buff-tailed bumble bee. We also evaluated gut damage and sucrose consumption in workers post-exposure. Cadmium was more toxic than copper for workers at same doses, although both metals induced severe gut melanisation and reduced sucrose consumption at high concentrations. Males displayed higher tolerance to cadmium, but it was correlated to their higher body mass, emphasising the necessity for reporting mass-standardised LD50 for genuine sex comparisons in risk assessments. Our findings advocate for the establishment of databases focusing on metal-induced lethal effects on model bee species.

Metal concentrations in fish, crabs, and bivalve molluscs from marine waters adjacent to a multi-metals smelter and refinery

Metal concentrations were determined in tissues of finfish, crabs, and bivalve molluscs collected from marine waters near Port Pirie, South Australia, the site of a long-standing multi-metals smelter and refinery. A general trend of tissue metal concentrations in order of highest to lowest was observed in bivalves > crabs > finfish. A lead concentration of 158 ± 6.6 mg/kg (wet wt.) was observed in blue mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) sampled close to the smelter. Lead concentrations correlated positively with proximity to the smelter in all biota analysed. Similar relationships were observed for cadmium, copper, zinc and selenium in all biota except razorfish (Pinna bicolor; Bivalvia: Pinnidae), which showed no correlation with proximity to the smelter for these metals. Inorganic arsenic concentrations were below the limit of reporting in the majority of the analysed samples, however inorganic arsenic concentrations in blue swimmer crabs (Portunus armatus) and blue mussels correlated with proximity to the smelter. Mercury concentrations in the biota analysed were generally low and showed variable relationships with proximity to the smelter, with no significant correlation observed in finfish and razorfish, a significant positive correlation in blue mussels, and a significant negative correlation in blue swimmer crabs. This is the first major study of metal concentrations in recreationally-targeted marine species near Port Pirie species for more than two decades. Comparison with data from previous studies conducted shows little change in tissue metal concentrations in marine biota near Port Pirie over the past 40 years.

Contaminated sites and Indigenous peoples in Canada and the United States: A scoping review

Indigenous communities are disproportionately exposed to contaminated sites, and this poses unique challenges as many Indigenous peoples consider land as an integral part of their culture and economy. This scoping review aimed to identify and map information on contaminated sites and Indigenous peoples in Canada and the United States, namely (1) the relationship between contaminated sites and Indigenous peoples and their land and food systems; (2) strategies, challenges, and successes for contaminated sites assessment and management on Indigenous land; and (3) Indigenous leadership and inclusion in contaminated site assessment and management. We followed a PRISMA-ScR (Transparent Reporting of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-Extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist to collect data that could be categorized into these three objectives. Between October 2021 and July 2023, information from three data streams was retrieved: a systematic literature search; a grey literature search; and federal site data retrieval (Canada's Federal Contaminated Sites Inventory, USEPA's contaminated sites databases, including Superfund). This search yielded 51 peer-reviewed articles, 21 grey literature articles, and 11 404 federal site records, evidencing the contamination of the lands of 875 Indigenous communities and the presence of 440 different contaminants or contaminant groups. The body of information was categorized into three themes within the above objectives: Objective 1: Indigenous communities and geographic patterns; Contaminated sites, sources, and media; Contaminated sites and Indigenous lands; Contaminated sites and Indigenous food systems; Contaminated sites and the health of Indigenous peoples; Objective 2: Site management and classification processes; Health risk assessment; Risk management; Long-term management; and Objective 3: Collaborative research, Collaborative site management; Traditional knowledge and contaminated sites. Results highlighted a need to prioritize holism, efficiency, and Indigenous leadership in site assessment, management, and research, including a focus on community-specific approaches to site assessment and management; a reconceptualization of risks that privileges Indigenous epistemologies; and greater collaboration between stakeholder networks. Poison in the water: Arsenic's silent assault on fish health

Arsenic occurs across the world in freshwater and marine environments, menacing the survival of aquatic organisms. Organic and inorganic forms of this substance can be found, in which the inorganic form is more hazardous than the organic form. Most aquatic bodies contain inorganic arsenic species, but organic species are believed to be the dominant form of arsenic in the majority of fish. Natural and anthropogenic both are the sources of water contamination with arsenic. Its bioaccumulation and transfer from one trophic level to another in the aquatic food chain make arsenic a vital environmental issue. Continuous exposure to low concentrations of arsenic in aquatic organisms including fish leads to its bioaccumulation, which may affect organisms of higher trophic levels including large fishes or humans. Humans can be exposed to arsenic through the consumption of fish contaminated with arsenic. Hence, the present review facilitates our understanding about sources of arsenic, its bioaccumulation, food chain transfer, and its effect on the fish health. Also, "Poison in the Water: Arsenic's Silent Assault on Fish Health" serves as a wake-up call to recognize the pressing need to address arsenic contamination in water bodies. By understanding its devastating impact on fish health, we can strive to implement sustainable practices and policies that safeguard our precious aquatic environments and ensure the well-being of both wildlife and human communities that depend on them.

Associations between individual and mixed urinary metal exposure and dyslipidemia among Chinese adults: Data from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort Study

The prevalence of dyslipidemia is increasing, and it has become a significant global public health concern. Some studies have demonstrated contradictory relationships between urinary metals and dyslipidemia, and the combined effects of mixed urinary metal exposure on dyslipidemia remain ambiguous. In this study, we examined how individual and combined urinary metal exposure are associated with the occurrence of dyslipidemia. According to the data from the 2018-2019 baseline survey database of the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) Study, a population of 9348 individuals was studied. Inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure 21 urinary metal concentrations in the collected adult urinary samples. The associations between urinary metals and dyslipidemia were analyzed by logistic regression, weighted quantile sum regression (WQS), and quantile-based g-computation (qgcomp), controlled for potential confounders to examine single and combined effects. Dyslipidemia was detected in 3231 individuals, which represented approximately 34.6 % of the total population. According to the single-exposure model, Al and Na were inversely associated with the risk of dyslipidemia (OR = 0.95, 95 % CI: 0.93, 0.98; OR = 0.89, 95 % CI: 0.83, 0.95, respectively), whereas Zn, Ca, and P were positively associated (OR = 1.69, 95 % CI: 1.42, 2.01; OR = 1.12, 95 % CI: 1.06, 1.18; OR = 1.21, 95 % CI: 1.09, 1.34, respectively). Moreover, Zn and P were significantly positively associated even after adjusting for these metals, whereas Al and Cr were negatively associated with the risk of dyslipidemia. The results of the WQS and qgcomp analyses showed that urinary metal mixtures were positively associated with the risk of dyslipidemia (OR = 1.26, 95 % CI: 1.15, 1.38; OR = 1.09, 95 % CI: 1.01, 1.19). This positive association was primarily driven by Zn, P, and Ca. In the sensitivity analyses with collinearity diagnosis, interaction, and stratified analysis, the results remained, confirming the reliability of the study findings. In this study, the individual and combined effects of urinary Zn, P, and Ca on dyslipidemia were determined, which provided novel insights into the link between exposure to metals and dyslipidemia.

Exploring the origins and cleanup of mercury contamination: a comprehensive review

Mercury is a global pollutant that poses significant risks to human health and the environment. Natural sources of mercury include volcanic eruptions, while anthropogenic sources include industrial processes, artisanal and small-scale gold mining, and fossil fuel combustion. Contamination can arise through various pathways, such as atmospheric deposition, water and soil contamination, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification in food chains. Various remediation strategies, including phytoremediation, bioremediation, chemical oxidation/reduction, and adsorption, have been developed to address mercury pollution, including physical, chemical, and biological approaches. The effectiveness of remediation techniques depends on the nature and extent of contamination and site-specific conditions. This review discusses the challenges associated with mercury pollution and remediation, including the need for effective monitoring and management strategies. Overall, this review offers a comprehensive understanding of mercury contamination and the range of remediation techniques available to mitigate its adverse impacts.

Host-associated microbes mitigate the negative impacts of aquatic pollution

Pollution can negatively impact aquatic ecosystems, aquaculture operations, and recreational water quality. Many aquatic microbes can sequester or degrade pollutants and have been utilized for bioremediation. While planktonic and benthic microbes are well-studied, host-associated microbes likely play an important role in mitigating the negative impacts of aquatic pollution and represent an unrealized source of microbial potential. For example, aquatic organisms that thrive in highly polluted environments or concentrate pollutants may have microbiomes adapted to these selective pressures. Understanding microbe-pollutant interactions in sensitive and valuable species could help protect human well-being and improve ecosystem resilience. Investigating these interactions using appropriate experimental systems and overcoming methodological challenges will present novel opportunities to protect and improve aquatic systems. In this perspective, we review examples of how microbes could mitigate negative impacts of aquatic pollution, outline target study systems, discuss challenges of advancing this field, and outline implications in the face of global changes.

Co-exposure to multiple heavy metals and metalloid induces dose dependent modulation in antioxidative, inflammatory, DNA damage and apoptic pathways progressing to renal dysfunction in mice

Humans are exposed to a cocktail of heavy metal toxicants at the same time in the environment rather than single metal. The kidney is often a site of early damage due to high renal contact to these pollutants. This study was done to examine the cumulative toxic effect of multiple elements prevalent in the environment. To explore the effect of subchronic exposure to heavy metal mixture male and female Swiss albino mice were randomly divided into 14 groups and given varying doses [MPL (maximum permissible limit), 1X, 5X, 10X, 50X, or 100X] of the multiple metals and metalloid mixtures via drinking water for 8 weeks. It was determined that metal treatment caused increased metal load in renal tissue. The kidney function deteriorated in response to 10X, 50X, 100X concentration of the dosing mixture was found associated to oxidative stress, glomerular damage, necrosis, cell death and further exacerbation of the inflammation.

Bioinspired Microgel-Loaded Smart Membrane Filtration with the Thermo- and Ion-Dual Responsive Water Gate for Selective Lead(II) Separation

Lead (Pb2+) is a ubiquitous pollutant. Membrane filtration represents one of the most common water treatment methods, but nanofiltration and ultrafiltration require high transmembrane pressure, while microfiltration has larger pore sizes than ions, making them unfavorable for direct ion removal at low cost. Selective and direct separation of Pb2+ via membrane filtration at high efficiency without sacrificing the flux of clean water still remains challenging. Herein, inspired by the Pb2+-tolerable oleander that enriches and prevents Pb2+ in roots from permeating the plant body, a smart Pb2+-adsorptive filtration membrane with a temperature- and ion-tunable water gate was prepared by loading dual-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamido-co-acrylamido-benzo-18-crown-6) (PNB-5-20) microgels onto a commercial membrane. The PNB-5-20 microgel exhibits pronounced temperature-responsive swelling/deswelling (hydrodynamic diameter, 650-330 nm) with a volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) at ∼33 °C. Moreover, the microgel shows a high Pb2+-adsorption capacity (qmax, 85.4 mg/g) and good selectivity (distribution coefficient Kd ∼ 1000 mL/g) thanks to its complexation with the crown ether, as well as good Pb2+ responsiveness, having the VPTT positively shifted to 40 °C in the presence of Pb2+ with enhanced swelling behaviors. Functionalized with PNB-5-20, the smart membrane integrates Pb2+ detection, adsorption, and tunable water drainage in a single device. The membrane selectively recognizes Pb2+ in the polluted water with the gates in membrane pores switching from "open" to "closed", intercepting and adsorbing Pb2+ with water permeation reduced. Once purified, the gates can be "re-opened" by increasing the temperature. Construction of such an intelligent membrane filtration device with a tunable water gate and excellent Pb2+ recognition and adsorption performance will greatly simplify the remediation of Pb2+-polluted water.

Habitat-specific allocations of elements in Atriplex lentiformis seeds indicate adaptation to metal toxicity

Self-sustaining vegetation in metal-contaminated areas is essential for rebuilding ecological resilience and community stability in degraded lands. Metal-tolerant plants originating from contaminated post-mining areas may hold the key to successful plant establishment and growth. Yet, little is known about the impact of metal toxicity on reproductive strategies, metal accumulation, and allocation patterns at the seed stage. Our research focused on the metal tolerant Atriplex lentiformis. Specifically, we examined the effects of toxic metal(loid) concentration in soils on variability in its reproductive strategies, including germination patterns, elemental uptake, and allocation within the seeds. We employed advanced imaging techniques like synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy (2D scans and 3D tomograms) combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to reveal significant differences in metal(loid) concentration and distribution within the seed structures of A. lentiformis from contrasting habitats. Exclusive Zn hotspots of high concentrations were found in the seeds of the metallicolous accession, primarily in the sensitive tissues of shoot apical meristems and root zones of the seed embryos. Our findings offer novel insights into phenotypic variability and metal tolerance and accumulation in plants from extreme environments. This knowledge can be applied to enhance plant survival and performance in land restoration efforts.

Expression optimization and characterization of a novel amylopullulanase from the thermophilic Cohnella sp. A01

Amylopullulanase (EC. 3.2.1.41/1) is an enzyme that hydrolyzes starch and pullulan, capable of breaking (4 → 1)-α and (6 → 1)-α bonds in starch. Here, the Amy1136 gene (2166 base pairs) from the thermophilic bacterium Cohnella sp. A01 was cloned into the expression vector pET-26b(+) and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21. The enzyme was purified using heat shock at 90 °C for 15 min. The expression optimization of Amy1136 was performed using Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken design as follows: temperature of 26.7 °C, rotational speed of 180 rpm, and bacterial population of 1.25. The Amy1136 displayed the highest activity at a temperature of 50 °C (on pullulan) and a pH of 8.0 (on starch) and, also exhibited stability at high temperatures (90 °C) and over a range of pH values. Ag+ significantly increased enzyme activity, while Co2+ completely inhibited amylase activity. The enzyme was found to be calcium-independent. The kinetic parameters Km, Vmax, kcat, and kcat/Km for amylase activity were 2.4 mg/mL, 38.650 μmol min-1 mg-1, 38.1129 S-1, and 0.09269 S-1mg mL-1, respectively, and for pullulanase activity were 173.1 mg/mL, 59.337 μmol min-1 mg-1, 1.586 S-1, and 1.78338 S-1mg mL-1, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters Kin, t1/2, Ea#, ΔH#, ΔG# and ΔS# were calculated equal to 0.20 × 10-2 (m-1), 462.09 (min), 16.87 (kJ/mol), 14.18 (kJ/mol), 47.34 (kJ/mol) and 102.60 (Jmol K-1), respectively. The stability of Amy1136 under high temperature, acidic and alkaline pH, surfactants, organic solvents, and calcium independence, suggests its suitability for industrial applications.

The association of mixed multi-metal exposure with sleep duration and self-reported sleep disorder: A subgroup analysis from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)

Sleep disorders significantly affect sleep duration and constitute a major public health issue. However, the relationship between metal exposure and sleep is not fully elucidated. This study utilized publicly available data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to measure blood concentrations of seven metals-copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb)-in a cohort of 4263 American adults. The relationship between metal exposure and self-reported sleep duration and sleep disorder risk was analyzed using single exposure models like logistic and linear regression and mixedexposure models such as weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). The results indicated an absence of statistically significant findings in the single exposure model. In contrast, the mixed exposure model revealed a positive correlation between selenium levels and the risk of sleep disorders across the entire population. A "U-shaped" association was identified between copper levels and the risk of sleep disorders in males, females, and individuals aged 60 and above. Moreover, a positive trend was observed between manganese levels and the risk of sleep disorders in individuals aged 60 and above. Additionally, elevated concentrations of metal mixtures were significantly associated with reduced sleep duration among females. Sensitivity analyses corroborated these findings. In conclusion, within the context of metal mixtures, selenium may be a risk factor for sleep disorders in the general population. Manganese may be a unique risk factor in older adults. Copper levels have a "U" shaped link to sleep disorder risk in specific population subgroups. Finally, the accumulation of blood metal mixtures in females, mainly due to lead and mercury, may reduce sleep duration. Further research is necessary to validate these findings.

Constructed wetlands and hyperaccumulators for the removal of heavy metal and metalloids: A review

Water pollutions of heavy metal and metalloids (HMMs), typically including As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn, are becoming a severe environmental problem to be controlled. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been intensively investigated and applied for the removal of HMMs. By analyzing a mass of data from the existing literatures, this review found that the HMM removals in CWs varied from 12.35 % to 91.01 %, depending upon the HMM species and CW conditions. Nonetheless, 88.50 % of the influent HMMs were eventually immobilized in the CW sediments, while the common wetland plants are inefficient (i.e., accounting for 4.64 %) to uptake and accumulate the HMMs. It was also found that the concentrations of certain HMMs in the CW sediments have already exceeded up to 100 % of various environmental standards, indicating the urgency of introducing HMM hyperaccumulators in the systems. Through comparison, both the aboveground and belowground HMM accumulating capacities of reported hyperaccumulators were higher by magnitudes than common wetland plants. Following this, the efficacies and mechanisms of candidate hyperaccumulators were provided for the various scenarios of HMM control in CWs. Further, the selection principals, culture methods, and harvest strategies of hyperaccumulator in CWs were discussed. Finally, several perspectives were suggested for the future research. Overall, this review provided guiding information for the utilization of hyperaccumulators in CWs, which can improve the efficiency and sustainability of HMM removal in the CW systems.

In situ bioaccumulation of metals by Prosopis juliflora and its detoxification potential at the metal contaminated sites

Heavy metals emanate from diverse anthropogenic activities and the top soil in the vicinity of these activities acts as an immediate sink and facilitates diffusion of heavy metals into the food chain. In the semi-arid plains of India, Prosopis juliflora is the most common and dominant weed along the motorways and barren lands including industrial environs. This investigation hypothesizes the adaptive nature of Prosopis juliflora in the metal enriched soils and attempts to understand its hyper-accumulating potential of metals besides bioconversion/detoxification capability. Prosopis juliflora samples (root, stem, leaves, and pods) from 100 sites in the environs of anthropogenic activities (vehicular emissions and industrial operations) were analyzed for heavy metal concentrations (Cu, Fe, Cr, Cd, Ni, Pb). Prosopis juliflora accumulate metals at the rate of 0.138 mg/kg/day DW for Copper (Cu), Fe: 0.142 mg/kg/day DW, Cr: 0.114 mg/kg/day DW, Ni: 0.048 mg/kg/day DW, Pb: 0.052 mg/kg/day DW, Cd: 0.009 mg/kg/day DW. Furthermore, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) metal oxidation state analysis revealed that in the pods of Prosopis juliflora heavy metals (Fe, Cr, Pb) largely existed in non-toxic form (toxic:non-toxic - 3:6), while in the under canopy soil, metals predominantly existed in toxic form (toxic:non-toxic - 7:2); conclusively XPS results ascertains the heavy metal bioconversion/detoxification potential of the plant. These findings suggest that presence of Prosopis juliflora coppice in the barren landscapes across the transportation corridors and metal based industrial zones may ideally favor phyto-remediation of heavy metals.

Analysis of driving factors for potential toxic metals in major urban soils of China: a geodetetor-based quantitative study

Potential toxic metal (PTM) is hazardous to human health, but the mechanism of spatial heterogeneity of PTM at a macro-scale remains unclear. This study conducts a meta-analysis on the data of PTM concentrations in the soil of 164 major cities in China from 2006 to 2021. It utilizes spatial analysis methods and geodetector to investigate the spatial distribution characteristics of PTMs. The geographic information systems (GIS) and geodetector were used to investigate the spatial distribution characteristics of PTMs, assess the influence of natural factors (NFs) and anthropogenic factors (AFs) on the spatial heterogeneity of PTMs in urban soils, and identified the potential pollution areas of PTMs. The results indicated that the pollution levels of PTMs in urban soils varied significantly across China, with higher pollution levels in the south than in the north. Cd and Hg were the most severely contaminated elements. The geodetector analysis showed that temperature and precipitation in NFs and land use type in AFs were considered as the main influencing factors, and that both AF and NF together led to the PTM variation. All these factors showed a mutually enhancing pattern which has important implications for urban soil management. PTM high-risk areas were identified to provide early warning of pollution risk under the condition of climate change.

Waste for Product-Synthesis and Electrocatalytic Properties of Palladium Nanopyramid Layer Enriched with PtNPs

The presented research is the seed of a vision for the development of a waste-for-product strategy. Following this concept, various synthetic solutions containing low concentrations of platinum group metals were used to model their recovery and to produce catalysts. This is also the first report that shows the method for synthesis of a pyramid-like structure deposited on activated carbon composed of Pd and Pt. This unique structure was obtained from a mixture of highly diluted aqueous solutions containing both metals and chloride ions. The presence of functional groups on the carbon surface and experimental conditions allowed for: the adsorption of metal complexes, their reduction to metal atoms and enabled further hierarchical growth of the metal layer on the carbon surface. During experiments, spherical palladium and platinum nanoparticles were obtained. The addition of chloride ions to the solution promoted the hierarchical growth and formation of palladium nanopyramids, which were enriched with platinum nanoparticles. The obtained materials were characterized using UV-Vis, Raman, IR spectroscopy, TGA, SEM/EDS, and XRD techniques. Moreover, Pd@ROY, Pt@ROY, and Pd-Pt@ROY were tested as possible electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions.

Risk assessment of As, Cd, Cr, and Pb via the consumption of seafood in Haikou

In order to mitigate the risk of excessive heavy metal intake, a study was conducted to assess the levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) contamination in 23 edible seafood species obtained from markets in Haikou. The findings were analyzed to evaluate the potential health hazards posed to the local population through consumption. The metals were detected via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for quantification. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks in humans were assessed via target hazard quotient (THQ), combined target hazard quotient (CTHQ), and target cancer risk (TR). The results indicated that the rank order based on the median metal concentration was As > Cd > Cr > Pb. THQ and CTHQ showed that nine seafood species posed a non-carcinogenic risk regarding from As and Cd consumption separately, or the four targeted metals ingestion together. TR assessment indicated that the InAs in all the species presented a carcinogenic risk to coastal residents. The Cd content in bivalves, algae, and several crustacean (Mantis Shrimp, Orchid Crab, Red spot Swimming Crab) and fish species (Japanese Scad, Pacific Saury), and Cr levels in most bivalve species (Razor Clams, White Clams, Fan Shells, Oysters, Blood Clams) presented a carcinogenic risk. The As, Cd, Pb, and Cr levels of seafood in Haikou were assessed species presented a potential health risk. Necessitating stricter risk should be management and detection capability and monitoring will be improved.

Remediation of heavy metals polluted soil environment: A critical review on biological approaches

Heavy metals (HMs) pollution is a globally emerging concern. It is difficult to cost-effectively combat such HMs polluted soil environments. The efficient remediation of HMs polluted soil is crucial to protect human health and ecological security that could be carried out by several methods. Amidst, biological remediation is the most affordable and ecological. This review focused on the principles, mechanisms, performances, and influential factors in bioremediation of HMs polluted soil. In microbial remediation, microbes can alter metallic compounds in soils. They transform these compounds into their metabolism through biosorption and bioprecipitation. The secreted microbial enzymes act as transformers and assist in HMs immobilization. The synergistic microbial effect can further improve HMs removal. In bioleaching, the microbial activity can simultaneously produce H2SO4 or organic acids and leach HMs. The production of acids and the metabolism of bacteria and fungi transform metallic compounds to soluble and extractable form. The key bioleaching mechanisms are acidolysis, complexolysis, redoxolysis and bioaccumulation. In phytoremediation, hyperaccumulator plants and their rhizospheric microbes absorb HMs by roots through absorption, cation exchange, filtration, and chemical changes. Then they exert different detoxification mechanisms. The detoxified HMs are then transferred and accumulated in their harvestable tissues. Plant growth-promoting bacteria can promote phytoremediation efficiency; however, use of chelants have adverse effects. There are some other biological methods for the remediation of HMs polluted soil environment that are not extensively practiced. Finally, the findings of this review will assist the practitioners and researchers to select the appropriate bioremediation approach for a specific soil environment.

Performance evaluation of a hyphenated laser spectroscopy system with conventional methods for microplastic analysis

Microplastics are one of the concerning environmental pollutants because of their ubiquity. Their capability to adsorb other environmental pollutants increases the risk even further. Existing identification approaches for microplastic characterization for polymer class and their surface-adsorbed heavy metal detection require the utilization of multiple resources and expertise. The article discusses the applicability of a custom-made hyphenated Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)-Raman spectroscopic system in characterizing microplastics by comparing the analytical performance with conventional methods such as Attenuated Total Reflectance- Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, confocal Raman spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Raman analysis identified polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics, which is confirmed by confocal Raman and FTIR study of the same. LIBS study of microplastics detected heavy metals such as Al, Ni, Co, and Zn, along with Ca and Mg trace elements. The cross-examination with EDS validates these trace elements' presence on the microplastics' surface. The results of the reported LIBS-Raman analysis and its validity evaluated using conventional gold-standard methods show the applicability of the proposed methodology in characterizing microplastics from environmental resources with less or no sample preparation in short time.

Responses of Dunaliella sp. AL-1 to chromium and copper: Biochemical and physiological studies

Microalgae have gained recognition as versatile candidates for the remediation of heavy metals (HMs). This study investigated the biosorption potential of Dunaliella sp. AL1 for copper (Cu(II)) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in aqueous solutions. The marine microalga Dunaliella sp. AL1 was exposed to half-sublethal concentrations of both metals in single and bimetallic systems, and responses in algal growth, oxidative stress, photosynthetic pigment production, and photosynthetic performance were evaluated. Cu and/or Cr exposure increased the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in microalgae cells but did not impact algal growth. In terms of photosynthesis, there was a decrease in chlorophylls and carotenoids production in the microalgae culture treated with Cr, either alone or in combination with Cu. The study recorded promising metal removal efficiencies: 26.67%-20.11% for Cu and 94.99%-95.51% for Cr, in single and bimetallic systems, respectively. FTIR analysis revealed an affinity of Cu and Cr ions towards aliphatic/aldehyde C-H, N-H bending, and phosphate groups, suggesting the formation of complex bonds. Biochemical analysis of microalgae biomass collected after the removal of Cr alone or in combination with Cu showed a significant decrease in total carbohydrate content and soluble protein levels. Meanwhile, higher lipid accumulation was recorded and evidenced by BODIPY 505/515 staining. Fatty acid composition analysis by GC revealed a modulation in lipid composition, with a decrease in the ratio of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) to saturated fatty acids (SFA), in response to Cu, Cr, and Cu-Cr exposure, indicating the suitability of the biomass for sustainable biofuel production.

Geospatial analysis of toxic metal contamination in groundwater and associated health risks in the lower Himalayan industrial region

Once known for its clean and natural environment, the lower Himalayan region is now no exception to human-induced disturbances. Rapid industrial growth in Baddi-Barotiwala (BB) industrial region has led to degradation of groundwater resources in the area. Groundwater samples were collected from 37 locations to study the groundwater chemistry, geospatial variation of 15 toxic metals in groundwater, source apportionment, metals of concern and associated health risks in the region. The results showed rock dominated hydrogeology with decreasing order of anion and cation abundance as HCO3- > Cl- > SO42- > NO3- > Br- > F- and Ca+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+ > Li+ respectively. Concentrations of Iron (BDL-3.6 mg/l), Nickel (BDL-0.023 mg/l), Barium (0.22-0.89 mg/l), Lead (0.0001-0.085 mg/l) and Zinc (0.006-21.4 mg/l) were found above the permissible limits at few locations. Principal component analysis (PCA) and coefficient of variance (CV) showed both geogenic and anthropogenic origin of metals in groundwater of the BB industrial region. A consistent concentration of Uranium was detected at all the sampling locations with an average value of 0.0039 mg/l and poor spatial variation indicating its natural presence. Overall, non-carcinogenic (N-CR) risk in the study area via oral pathway was high for adults and children (Hazard Index > 1) with geogenic Uranium as the major contributor (Hazard Quotient > 1) followed by Zinc, Lead and Cobalt. Carcinogenic (CR) risk in the region was high for adults having mean value above the threshold (1E-04) with Nickel and Chromium as the metals of major concern. Spatial variation of health risks was overlayed on village boundaries of the region to identify the potential industrial sources of the metals of major concern. The results highlight the need for immediate remediation of groundwater resources in order to achieve a harmonious coexistence between industrialization and human well-being.

A novel red-to-near-infrared AIE fluorescent probe for detection of Hg2+ with large Stokes shift in plant and living cells

Due to the highly toxic nature of mercury ions to living organisms, accurately detecting Hg2+ in water samples and biological systems is of great significance. In this study, we designed and synthesized a novel red-to-near-infrared Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) fluorescent probe (named as DS) based Fluorene derivatives on specifically for Hg2+ detection. Probe DS can visually identify Hg2+ through an red-to-near-infrared fluorescence enhancement change, characterized by a large Stokes shift (130 nm) and AIE feature. This probe offers a fast response, high selectivity and sensitivity. The Hg2+-induced deprotection reaction of the thioketal mechanism was thoroughly investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Additionly, dynamic light scattering (DLS) results indicated that the aggregation states changes of the molecular play a crucial role in the AIE fluorescence response of probe DS toward Hg2+. The red-to-near-infrared response with AIE feature not only avoids the interference of auto-fluorescence signals in complex environments, but also reduces the fluorescence quenching caused by probe molecular aggregation. This makes probe DS highly suitable for high-quality imaging detection of Hg2+ in aqueous environments. Furthermore, probe DS demonstrates the capability for visual fluorescence detection of Hg2+ concentrations in water sample, plant roots and living cells.

A study on the mediating role of serum hormones in the effects of heavy metals on preeclampsia

Exposure to environmental heavy metals may pose a risk factor for developing preeclampsia (PE) modified through intervention. This case-control study aimed to investigate the association between serum heavy metal concentrations and PE in pregnant women and whether hormones served as mediating factors in the impact of heavy metals on PE. From October 2020 to 2022, 160 patients with PE and 160 pregnant women with normal deliveries were recruited at Dongguan Songshan Lake Central Hospital. Serum concentrations of manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), progesterone (P), estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), cortisol (Cort), and cortisone (Cor) were measured. Logistic, restricted cubic splines, weighted quantile sum and multivariate linear regression models were employed to account for different aspects and explore the relationships among heavy metals, hormones, and PE. Mediation model analysis was performed to assess the role of hormones in mediation. The median concentrations of Mn, E2, and Cort were lower in the PE group than in the control group. The median concentrations of Cu, Zn, β-hCG, and T were higher in the PE than in the control. Mn, E2, and Cort showed negative associations with PE, while Cu, Zn, β-hCG, and T demonstrated positive associations, as determined through logistic regression. Mn, Cu, and Zn displayed linear dose-response relationships with PE. Zn and Cu had high weights in the positive association model of mixed heavy metal exposure with PE. The mediation analysis revealed that serum E2, P, T, Cort, and Cort/Cor might be potential mediators of the association between heavy metals (Mn, Cu, and Zn) and PE.

Heavy Metal Exposure-Mediated Dysregulation of Sphingolipid Metabolism

Exposure to heavy metals (HMs) is often associated with inflammation and cell death, exacerbating respiratory diseases including asthma. Most inhaled particulate HM exposures result in the deposition of HM-bound fine particulate matter, PM2.5, in pulmonary cell populations. While localized high concentrations of HMs may be a causative factor, existing studies have mostly evaluated the effects of systemic or low-dose chronic HM exposures. This report investigates the impact of local high concentrations of specific HMs (NaAsO2, MnCl2, and CdCl2) on sphingolipid homeostasis and oxidative stress, as both play a role in mediating responses to HM exposure and have been implicated in asthma. Utilizing an in vitro model system and three-dimensional ex vivo human tissue models, we evaluated the expression of enzymatic regulators of the salvage, recycling, and de novo synthesis pathways of sphingolipid metabolism, and observed differential modulation in these enzymes between HM exposures. Sphingolipidomic analyses of specific HM-exposed cells showed increased levels of anti-apoptotic sphingolipids and reduced pro-apoptotic sphingolipids, suggesting activation of the salvage and de novo synthesis pathways. Differential sphingolipid regulation was observed within HM-exposed lung tissues, with CdCl2 exposure and NaAsO2 exposure activating the salvage and de novo synthesis pathway, respectively. Additionally, using spatial transcriptomics and quantitative real-time PCR, we identified HM exposure-induced transcriptomic signatures of oxidative stress in epithelial cells and human lung tissues.

Metal-bearing airborne particles from mining activities: A review on their characteristics, impacts and research perspectives

The presence of various contaminants in airborne dusts from metal mining sites poses obvious risks to human health and the environment. Yet, few studies have thoroughly investigated the properties of airborne particles in terms of their morphology, size distribution and chemical composition, that are associated with health effects around mining activities. This review presents the most recent knowledge on the sources, physicochemical characteristics, and health and environmental risks associated with airborne dusts from various mining and smelting operations. The literature reviewed found only one research on atmospheric dust associated with hydrometallurgical plants compared to a larger number of pyrometallurgical processes/smelters studies. In addition, there are relatively few works comparing the distribution of metals between the fine and coarse size fractions around mining sites. Our analysis suggests that (i) exposure pathways of metal(loid)s to the human body are defined by linking concentration data in human biosamples and contaminated samples such as soils, drinking water and food, and (ii) chitosan and its derivatives may serve as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method for soil remediation, with removal rates for metal(loid)s around 70-95 % at pH 6-8, and as dust suppressants for unpaved roads around mining sites. The specific limit values for PM and metal(loid)s at mining sites are not well documented. Despite the health risks associated with fine particles around mining areas, regulations have tended to focus on coarse particles. While some air quality agencies have issued regulations for occupational health and safety, there is no global alignment or common regulatory framework for enforcement. Future research priorities should focus on investigating PM and secondary inorganic aerosols associated with hydrometallurgical processes and dust monitoring, using online metal(loid)s analysers to identify the driving parameters in the deposition and resuspension process.

Sorption of chromium from aqueous solutions using Fucus vesiculosus algae biosorbent

The presence of heavy metals in wastewater is an environmental concern and the current treatment procedures are very expensive so it is necessary to find effective and inexpensive biosorbents. In this study, Fucus vesiculosus was used as a biosorbent for the biosorption of Cr(III) ions from the aqueous solutions. Biosorption parameters, such as pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, and initial concentrations of Cr(III) had the most impact on the sorption process. The required pH value for sorption was 5, the biosorbent dose was 4.0 g/L, the contact time was seen to occur after 90 min, and the Cr(III) removal decreased from 98.9 to 92%. The maximum biosorption capacity of chromium was 14.12 mg/g. FTIR analysis of Fucus vesiculosus biomass before the sorption process contains carboxyl, amino, hydroxyl, alkyne, and carbonyl groups, and according to the analysis after the sorption process, it was found that Cr(III) metal ions were incorporated within the sorbent during the interaction with (=C-H) active functional groups. The biosorption data were found to be perfectly suited by Langmuir equilibrium isotherm model. According to the results of this study, Fucus vesiculosus is an effective biosorbent for the removal of Cr(III) from aqueous solutions.
