Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to comprehensively compare the predictive effect of 10 body fat indexes on MAFLD in different sex, age and BMI subgroups. Patients and Methods A total of 5403 physical examination data were included and divided into the MAFLD group (N=2632) and non-MAFLD group (N=2771). The differences and correlation of 10 promising indicators between the two groups were compared, including fatty liver index (FLI), hepatic steatosis index (HSI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral fat index (VAI), cardiometabolic index (CMI), body adiposity index (BAI), and triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), waist circumference index (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist to height ratio (WHtR). Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk of MAFLD under different adjustment conditions. The operating characteristic curve of different genders, BMI levels and age subgroups was plotted. Results Male gender, smoking, alcohol drinking, and higher age are risk factors for MAFLD. In addition to BAI, the other 9 indicators had a high correlation with MAFLD, the area under the curve (AUC) value was >0.7, and the prediction effect was better in females, BMI<24 kg/m2, age <35 years subgroup, among which FLI (AUC: 0.912, 95% CI: 0.905-0.920), LAP (AUC: 0.894, 95% CI: 0.8866-0.903), and HSI (AUC: 0.881, 95% CI: 0.872-0.890) have better prediction effects. Conclusion Our study confirmed the accuracy of body fat-related indexes in predicting MAFLD in people of different sexes, ages, and BMI levels. Among them, FLI, LAP and HSI have high predictive value and can be utilized as simple and cost-effective tools for screening MAFLD in clinical settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to determine whether the waist-to-thigh ratio (WTTR) is associated with the incidence of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in health care workers. METHODS There were 4517 health care workers with baseline data and results from 2 follow-up examinations. We divided the subjects into 3 groups according to baseline WTTR and used the Cox hazard regression model to estimate MAFLD risk. RESULTS The WTTRs were categorized by tertiles at baseline using the values 1.58 and 1.66. Patients with higher WTTR tended to have significantly greater values for the following factors, body mass index (BMI), fasting blood glucose (FPG), systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and neck circumference. The incidence of MAFLD significantly increased with increasing WTTR tertiles (5.74%, 12.75% and 22.25% for the first, second and third tertiles, respectively, P < 0.05 for trend). Kaplan-Meier(K-M) survival analysis revealed a significant tendency towards increased MAFLD risk with increasing WTTR tertile. In the fully adjusted model, the hazard ratios (95% CIs) for MAFLD in the second, third WTTR tertiles compared with the first quartile were 2.17(1.58,2.98), 3.63(2.70,4.89), respectively, third neck circumference tertiles compared with the first quartile were 2.84(1.89,4.25), 8.95(6.00,13.35), respectively. Compared with those of individuals with a BMI > 23 kg/m2, the associations between WTTR and MAFLD incidence were more pronounced in subjects with a BMI < 23 kg/m2. Similarly, the difference in neck circumference was more pronounced in these patients with a BMI < 23 kg/m2. CONCLUSIONS Our results revealed that the WTTR is an independent risk factor for MAFLD, and there was a dose‒response relationship between the WTTR and MAFLD risk. The neck circumference was significantly different in subjects with a BMI < 23 kg/m2. This approach provides a new way to predict the incidence rate of MAFLD.

Abstract
Aims: To evaluate and compare lipid accumulation product (LAP) with alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), visceral adiposity index (VAI) and triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) as biomarkers for hepatic steatosis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods: LAP, ALT, AST, VAI and TyG were measured in 52 biopsy-proven NAFLD patients and 21 control subjects. Additionally, LAP was also measured in 448 ultrasound-proven NAFLD patients and 1009 control subjects. Results: LAP was positively associated with hepatic steatosis and inflammation in biopsy-proven NAFLD. The risk of NAFLD was positively related to LAP and TyG, but LAP showed a better area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for hepatic steatosis and NAFLD. LAP also performed well in recognizing ultrasound-proven NAFLD. Conclusion: LAP is an ideal biomarker of hepatic steatosis and NAFLD.

Abstract
CONTEXT Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a metabolical disorder and can lead to liver fibrosis. Because it is commonly seen, several noninvasive scores (NS) have been validated to identify high-risk patients. Patients with NAFLD have been shown to have higher serum angiopoietin-like protein-8 (ANGPTL-8) levels. OBJECTIVE The risk of NAFLD is known insufficiently in acromegaly. Moreover, the utility of the NS and the link between NAFLD and ANGPTL-8 in acromegaly is unknown. METHODS Thirty-two patients with acromegaly (n = 15, active [AA] and n = 17, controlled acromegaly [CA]) and 19 healthy controls were included. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-proton density fat fraction (PDFF) was used to evaluate hepatic steatosis, and magnetic resonance elastography to evaluate liver stiffness measurement. ANGPTL-8 levels were measured with ELISA. RESULTS Median liver MRI-PDFF and NAFLD prevalence in AA were lower than in CA (P = .026 and P < .001, respectively). Median magnetic resonance elastography-liver stiffness measurement were similar across groups. Of the NS, visceral adiposity index, fatty liver index, hepatic steatosis index, and triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) all showed positive correlation with the liver MRI-PDFF in the control group. However, only TyG significantly correlated with liver fat in the AA and CA groups. There was no correlation between traditional NAFLD risk factors (body mass index, waist circumference, C-reactive protein, homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance, visceral adipose tissue) and liver MRI-PDFF in the AA and CA. Patients with acromegaly with NAFLD had lower GH, IGF-1, and ANGPTL-8 levels than in those without NAFLD (P = .025, P = .011, and P = .036, respectively). CONCLUSION Active acromegaly may protect from NAFLD because of high GH. In patients with acromegaly, NAFLD risk cannot be explained with classical risk factors; hence, additional risk factors must be identified. TyG is the best score to evaluate NAFLD risk. Lower ANGPTL-8 in patients with acromegaly and NAFLD implies this hormone may be raised because of insulin resistance rather than being a cause for NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) had become the most prevalent liver disease worldwide. Early diagnosis could effectively reduce NAFLD-related morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to combine the risk factors to develop and validate a novel model for predicting NAFLD. METHODS We enrolled 578 participants completing abdominal ultrasound into the training set. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression combined with random forest (RF) was conducted to screen significant predictors for NAFLD risk. Five machine learning models including logistic regression (LR), RF, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), gradient boosting machine (GBM), and support vector machine (SVM) were developed. To further improve model performance, we conducted hyperparameter tuning with train function in Python package 'sklearn'. We included 131 participants completing magnetic resonance imaging into the testing set for external validation. RESULTS There were 329 participants with NAFLD and 249 without in the training set, while 96 with NAFLD and 35 without were in the testing set. Visceral adiposity index, abdominal circumference, body mass index, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), ALT/AST (aspartate aminotransferase), age, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and elevated triglyceride (TG) were important predictors for NAFLD risk. The area under curve (AUC) of LR, RF, XGBoost, GBM, SVM were 0.915 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.886-0.937], 0.907 (95% CI: 0.856-0.938), 0.928 (95% CI: 0.873-0.944), 0.924 (95% CI: 0.875-0.939), and 0.900 (95% CI: 0.883-0.913), respectively. XGBoost model presented the best predictive performance, and its AUC was enhanced to 0.938 (95% CI: 0.870-0.950) with further parameter tuning. CONCLUSIONS This study developed and validated five novel machine learning models for NAFLD prediction, among which XGBoost presented the best performance and was considered a reliable reference for early identification of high-risk patients with NAFLD in clinical practice.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing health concern with increasing prevalence and associated health impacts. Although no approved drugs are available for the NAFLD treatment, several hypoglycemic agents have been investigated as promising therapeutic agents. We aimed to compare the risk of occurrence of NAFLD with respect to the use of different hypoglycemic agents in patients with type 2 diabetes. This retrospective cohort study used data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort of South Korea. Participants newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (2003-2019) were included in this study. Two new user-active comparator cohorts were assembled: Cohort 1, new users of thiazolidinediones (TZD) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i), and Cohort 2, new users of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i) and DPP-4i. The occurrence of NAFLD was defined based claims that include diagnostic codes. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard models in 1:3 propensity score (PS)-matched cohorts. For 65,224 patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the overall prevalence of NAFLD was 42.6%. The PS-matched Cohort 1 included 6,351 and 2,117 new users of DPP-4i and TZD, respectively. Compared to DPP-4i, TZD use was associated with the decreased risk of NAFLD (HR, 0.66; 95% CI: 0.55-0.78). Cohort 2 consisted of 6,783 and 2,261 new users of DPP-4i and SGLT-2i, respectively; SGLT-2i use was associated with a decreased risk of NAFLD (HR, 0.93; 95% CI: 0.80-1.08). This population-based cohort study supports the clinical implications of prioritizing TZD and SGLT-2i over DPP-4i in reducing the risk of occurrence of NAFLD in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, the findings lacked statistical significance, highlighting the need for further verification studies.

Abstract
Rationale Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with metabolic dysfunction, including progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Chronic intermittent hypoxia (IH) as a model of OSA worsens hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in rodents with diet induced obesity. However, IH also causes weight loss, thus complicating attempts to co-model OSA and NAFLD. We sought to determine the effect of various durations of IH exposure on metabolic and liver-related outcomes in a murine NAFLD model. We hypothesized that longer IH duration would worsen the NAFLD phenotype. Methods Male C57BL/6J mice (n = 32) were fed a high trans-fat diet for 24 weeks, to induce NAFLD with severe steatohepatitis. Mice were exposed to an IH profile modeling severe OSA, for variable durations (0, 6, 12, or 18 weeks). Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test was measured at baseline and at six-week intervals. Liver triglycerides, collagen and other markers of NAFLD were measured at sacrifice. Results Mice exposed to IH for 12 weeks gained less weight (p = 0.023), and had lower liver weight (p = 0.008) relative to room air controls. These effects were not observed in the other IH groups. IH of longer duration transiently worsened glucose tolerance, but this effect was not seen in the groups exposed to shorter durations of IH. IH exposure for 12 or 18 weeks exacerbated liver fibrosis, with the largest increase in hepatic collagen observed in mice exposed to IH for 12 weeks. Discussion Duration of IH significantly impacts clinically relevant outcomes in a NAFLD model, including body weight, fasting glucose, glucose tolerance, and liver fibrosis.

Abstract
Background Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents a large and growing public health problem. Insulin resistance (IR) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. The aim of this study was to determine the association of triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, TyG index with body mass index (TyG-BMI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-c) and metabolic score for IR (METS-IR) with NAFLD in older adults and to compare the discriminatory abilities of these six IR surrogates for NAFLD. Methods This cross-sectional study included 72,225 subjects aged ≥60 years living in Xinzheng, Henan Province, from January 2021 to December 2021. The data were collected from the annual health examination dataset. Logistic regression models were used to examine the relationships between the six indicators and NAFLD risk. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to compare the discriminatory ability of different IR surrogates for NAFLD under the influence of potential risk factors. Results After adjusting for multiple covariates, compared with the first quintile, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the highest quintiles of TyG-BMI were the most obvious (OR:43.02, 95% CI:38.89-47.72), followed by the METS-IR (OR:34.49, 95% CI:31.41-37.95). Restricted cubic spline analysis reported that there were non-linear positive association and dose-response relationship between 6 IR surrogates and NAFLD risk. Compared with other IR-related indicators (LAP, TyG, TG/HDL-c and VAI), TyG-BMI showed the highest AUC (AUC:0.8059;95% CI:0.8025-0.8094). Additionally, METS-IR also had a high predictive performance for NAFLD, and the AUC was greater than 0.75 (AUC:0.7959;95% CI:0.7923-0.7994). Conclusion TyG-BMI and METS-IR had pronounced discrimination ability to NAFLD, which are recommended as complementary markers for the assessment of NAFLD risk both in clinic and in future epidemiological studies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by ectopic fat deposition in the liver. However, a recent classification of this condition, which also integrates the presence of coexisting metabolic disorders, termed Metabolic dysfunction Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD), has been proposed. NAFLD is increasingly common in early childhood, partly due to the increase in metabolic disease in this age. Thus, studying hepatic steatosis in the metabolic context has become important in this population as well. However, NAFLD, and thus MAFLD, diagnosis in children is challenging by the lack of non-invasive diagnostic tools comparable to the gold standard of hepatic biopsy. Recent studies have reported that the Pediatric Metabolic Index (PMI) could be a marker of insulin resistance and abnormal liver enzymes, but its association with NAFLD, MAFLD, or altered adipokines in these conditions has not been reported. The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation between PMI with the diagnosis of NAFLD or MAFLD, together with serum levels of leptin and adiponectin, in school-age children. METHODS A cross sectional study was carried out in two hundred and twenty-three children without medical history of hypothyroidism, genetic, or chronic diseases. Anthropometry, liver ultrasound, and serum levels of lipids, leptin, and adiponectin were evaluated. The children were classified as having NAFLD or non-NAFLD, and a subgroup of MAFLD in the NAFLD group was analyzed. The PMI was calculated by the established formulas for age and gender. RESULTS PMI correlated positively with the presence and severity of NAFLD (r=0.62, p<0.001 and r= 0.79, p<0.001 respectively) and with the presence of MAFLD (r=0.62; p<0.001). Also, this index correlated positively with serum leptin levels (r=0.66; p<0.001) and negatively with serum adiponectin levels (r= -0.65; p<0.001). PMI showed to be a good predictor for diagnosing NAFLD in school-age children when performing a ROC curve analysis (AUROC=0.986, p< 0.0001). CONCLUSION PMI could be a useful tool for the early diagnosis of NAFLD or MAFLD in children. However, future studies are necessary to establish validated cut-off points for each population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The visceral adiposity index (VAI), a gender-specific surrogate maker of adipose tissue distribution and function, is associated with risk of hyperuricemia. However, the impact of time-burden of abnormal VAI and its components on the risk of hyperuricemia remains unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS We included 56,537 participants without hyperuricemia and underwent two health examinations during 2006-2008 from the Kailuan study. Abnormal VAI burdens were evaluated as follows: (1) cumulative number of abnormal VAI presented at each examination (0-2 times); (2) cumulative number of each abnormal VAI component presented at each examination (0-2 times per component); (3) cumulative number of total abnormal VAI components presented at each examination (0-8 times). During a median follow-up of 8.81 years, 10,762 participants were diagnosed with hyperuricemia. The risk of hyperuricemia showed a positive association with cumulative number of abnormal VAI, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) of 2 times compared to 0 times was 1.69 (1.58-1.81). All four components of abnormal VAI, when diagnosed repeatedly, were independently associated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia, adjusted HR (95% CI) from 1.15 (1.02-1.28) for low high-density lipoprotein to 1.68 (1.58-1.79) for elevated triglyceride. The risk of hyperuricemia also gradually as abnormal components was accumulated from 0 to 8 counts, reaching an adjusted HR (95% CI) of 3.72 (2.64-5.23). Furthermore, the effect of cumulative abnormal VAI was more pronounced in females than males (P-interaction < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Cumulative abnormal VAI burdens were positively associated with the risk of hyperuricemia, especially in females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Different metabolic phenotypes may be related to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but such association whether modified by serum uric acid levels is unknown. We examined the association between different metabolic phenotypes and NAFLD and further explore whether hyperuricemia could modify this association. METHODS A total of 2959 participants (mean age: 55.02 years) with medical checkups were recruited from Tianjin Medical University General Hospital. Participants were categorized into four groups according to their BMI levels and metabolically healthy status: metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically healthy overweight or obese (MHO), metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUNW), and metabolically unhealthy overweight or obese (MUO). Blood samples (including serum uric acid) were collected from participants after an overnight fast. NAFLD was diagnosed based on abdominal ultrasonography scanning. Data were analyzed using logistic regression models and the interaction effect model. RESULTS The prevalence of NAFLD in MHNW, MHO, MUNW, and MUO groups was 9.9% (7.9-12.0%), 42.8% (39.5-46.1%), 36.5% (31.2-41.9%), and 69.7% (66.8-72.6%), respectively. In multi-adjusted logistic models, the ORs (95% CIs) of NAFLD were 5.32 (4.01-7.04) for participants with MHO, 4.51 (3.17-6.40) for those with MUNW, and 13.68 (10.23-18.30) for those with MUO compared to those with MHNW. In the stratified analysis by uric acid levels, the prevalence of NAFLD was significantly higher in participants with MHO, MUNW, and MUO in the hyperuricemia group than those in the normal uric acid group, and the interaction effect of metabolic phenotypes and uric acid on NAFLD was statistical significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS MHO, MUNW, and MUO were associated with higher prevalence of NAFLD. Serum uric acid levels may modify the association between metabolically phenotypes and NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND According to previous reports, obesity especially visceral fat has become an important public health problem, causing an estimation of 20.5 disability-adjusted life years per 1000 inhabitants. Those who exercised for 1 or 2 days per week and reached the recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity (PA) per week have been defined as "weekend warriors" (WWs). Although the benefits of PA in suppressing obesity have been widely studied, the association of WWs with the Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) and the difference between WW activity and regular PA are yet to be explored. OBJECTIVE This study aims to explore the association between WW activity and other PA patterns with VAI in US adults. METHODS The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2016 data set was used, and the analytic sample was limited to adults 20 years and older who had complete information about VAI, PA patterns, and other covariates, including demographic characteristics, behavioral factors, and disease conditions. Participants' characteristics in different PA pattern groups were tested using the Rao and Scott adjusted χ2 test and ANOVA. Univariate and multivariate stepped linear regression models were then used to explore the association between the PA pattern and VAI. Finally, stratified analyses and interaction effects were conducted to investigate whether the association was stable among subgroups. RESULTS The final sample included 9642 adults 20 years or older, which is representative of 158.1 million noninstitutionalized US adults, with 52.15% (n=5169) being male and 70.8% (n=4443) being non-Hispanic White. Gender, age group, race, education level, income level, marital status, smoking status, alcoholism, VAI, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes were all correlated with the PA pattern, but no relationship between hypertension and PA pattern was observed. After adjusting for demographic covariates, smoking status, alcoholism, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension, WW and regularly active adults had a β of .307 (95% CI -0.611 to -0.003) and .354 (95% CI -0.467 to -0.241), respectively, for reduced VAI when compared with inactive adults, but no significant effect of lowering VAI (β=-.132, 95% CI -0.282 to 0.018) was observed in insufficiently active adults when compared with inactive adults. Besides, no significant difference was exhibited between WW adults and regularly active adults (β=.047, 95% CI -0.258 to 0.352), suggesting WW adults had the same benefit of decreasing VAI as regularly active adults. Stratified analyses results exhibited that WW activity was related to reduced VAI in female adults aged 20-44 years who were non-Hispanic Black, other, or multiracial; high school or General Educational Development education; and never married, and the association between PA pattern and VAI remained stable in all demographic subgroups. CONCLUSIONS Compared with inactive adults, WWs could reduce VAI, and there was no significant difference between WWs and regular active adults in decreasing VAI. Our study provides compelling evidence of the beneficial effect of WW activity on visceral obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vegetables is the main sources of dietary nitrate. Studies suggested the potential link between nitrate content of vegetables and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. We aimed to assess the association between nitrate-containing vegetables (NCVs) with odds of nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD) in Iranian adults. METHOD This case-control study was performed on a total of 225 newly diagnosed NAFLD cases and 450 controls aged 20-60 years. Individuals' dietary intakes were determined using a valid and reliable food frequency questionnaire. RESULTS The mean ± SD age and BMI of participants were 38.1 ± 8.8 years and 26.8 ± 4.3 kg/m2, respectively. In the fully adjusted model, the odds of NAFLD were decreased across tertiles of total NCVs [(adjusted OR: 0.20, 95%CI: 0.10-0.40), (Ptrend < 0.001)] and low-nitrate vegetables [(adjusted OR: 0.22, 95%CI: 0.11-0.48), (Ptrend < 0.001)]. Our results showed that each one SD increments in nitrate content of vegetables (adjusted OR: 0.73, 95%CI: 0.55-0.97) and nitrate content of fruits (adjusted OR: 0.59, 95%CI: 0.36-0.97) was associated with reduced odds of NAFLD (P < 0.05). However, there was a positive association between each one SD increments in nitrate content of dairy products and meats and processed meats with odds of NAFLD (adjusted OR: 1.34, 95%CI: 1.03-1.74), (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our finding suggested that a higher intake of vegetable nitrate may be related to a decrease the odds of NAFLD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has become the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. We aimed to explore the gender-related association between nine indexes (BMI/WC/VAI/LAP/WHtR/TyG/TyG-BMI/TyG-WC/TyG-WHtR) and MAFLD/NAFLD and examine their diagnostic utility for these conditions. METHODS Eligible participants were screened from the 2017-2018 cycle data of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used to assess the predictive performance of 9 indexes for MAFLD/NAFLD. RESULTS Among the 809 eligible individuals, 478 had MAFLD and 499 had NAFLD. After adjusting for gender, age, ethnicity, FIPR and education level, positive associations with the risk of MAFLD/NAFLD were found for all the nine indexes. For female, TyG-WHtR presented the best performance in identifying MAFLD/NAFLD, with AUC of 0.845 (95% CI = 0.806-0.879) and 0.831 (95% CI = 0.791-0.867) respectively. For male, TyG-WC presented the best performance in identifying MAFLD/NAFLD, with AUC of 0.900 (95% CI = 0.867-0.927) and 0.855 (95% CI = 0.817-0.888) respectively. CONCLUSION BMI/WC/VAI/LAP/WHtR/TyG/TyG-BMI/TyG-WC/TyG-WHtR are important indexes to identify the risk of MAFLD and NAFLD.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and obesity are serious public health problems. Green tea is widely consumed in the world and different green teas could possess different bioactivities. In this study, the effects of 10 selected green teas on obesity and NAFLD were evaluated and compared. The mice fed with a high-fat diet were intervened with green tea extract (200 mg/kg body weight) for 15 weeks. Most of these teas were first evaluated for their effects on obesity and NAFLD. The results showed that Selenium-Enriched Chaoqing Green Tea and Jieyang Chaoqing Tea showed the most prominent inhibition of obesity and body weight gains of mice in these two tea intervention groups and model groups were 5.3, 5.5, and 13.7 g, respectively. In addition, Jieyang Chaoqing Tea, Taiping Houkui Tea, and Selenium-Enriched Chaoqing Green Tea exerted the most notable effect on NAFLD, which was attributed to decreasing body weight, and lipid content and ameliorating oxidative stress. Furthermore, 13 phytochemicals were determined in these teas by high-performance liquid chromatography and the correlation analysis found that epigallocatechin gallate, gallocatechin, and epigallocatechin might contribute to the decrease of hepatic weight, while epicatechin might reduce oxidative stress. In general, several green teas could prevent the development of obesity and NAFLD and could be developed into functional foods. This study was also helpful for the public to select appropriate tea to prevent obesity and NAFLD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The association between visceral adiposity index (VAI) and the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not been fully determined. Here, we aimed to explore the association between VAI and NAFLD in the general US population, and further investigate whether the association involves population differences. DESIGN Cross-sectional population-based study. SETTING The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003-2018). PARTICIPANTS A total of 7522 participants aged 20 years or older who have complete information for NAFLD assessment test were included in this study. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES NAFLD was assessed by the modified fatty liver index for the US population (USFLI) using a cut-off point of 30. Correlation between VAI and NAFLD prediction scores was calculated using the partial correlation analysis. Logistic regression models were further used to estimate ORs and 95% CIs. RESULTS Insulin resistance (IR), inflammation and waist circumference-adjusted partial correlation analysis indicated that VAI scores were positively correlated with USFLI (r=0.404 for men, and r=0.395 for women; p<0.001). In a comparison of the highest versus the lowest quartiles of VAI, multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated a positive association between VAI and NAFLD (OR (95% CI)=1.97 (1.12 to 3.47) for men, OR (95% CI)=4.03 (1.98 to 8.20) for women). The stratified analyses revealed that the positive association involves age/gender-specific and ethnic differences. As for the impact of metabolic disorders, our results revealed that the association was independent of IR and diabetes, but it would be confounded by other metabolic disorders. However, no significant association was found between VAI and hepatic fibrosis. CONCLUSION VAI is positively associated with the prevalence of NAFLD, but not hepatic fibrosis among US adults, and the association involves age/gender-specific and ethnic differences. The results reported here have important public health implications in NAFLD screening in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lean NAFLD may differ from NAFLD found in overweight or obese patients. We used the UK biobank to conduct a cross-sectional study that examined features that distinguish lean NAFLD from overweight or obese NAFLD. METHODS MRI-PDFF data were used to identify patients with NAFLD, with NAFLD defined as PDFF ≥ 5%. BMI patient cohorts were identified, with lean defined as a BMI < 25, and overweight or obese defined as a BMI ≥ 25. Variables of interest to fatty liver disease, including single nucleotide polymorphisms, were chosen from the UK biobank data portal. Logistic regression was used to generate models predictive of NAFLD in each cohort. RESULTS 1007 patients had NAFLD, and of these, 871 had BMI ≥ 25, and 136 BMI < 25. Factors associated with NAFLD in patients with BMI < 25 included male sex, white blood cell count, red blood cell count, triglycerides, ALT, creatinine, visceral adipose tissue, rs58542926 T, and rs738409 G. In contrast, factors associated with NAFLD in patients with BMI ≥ 25 included male sex, waist circumference, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, serum glucose, ALT, creatinine, urate, visceral adipose tissue, rs1260326 T, rs1044498 C, rs58542926 T, and rs738409 G. For lean patients, our generated prediction score had an AUC of 0.92, sensitivity of 0.90 and specificity of 0.81. For overweight or obese patients, the prediction score had an AUC of 0.86, sensitivity of 0.87 and specificity of 0.70. CONCLUSIONS Our analysis suggests that lean and overweight or obese NAFLD are distinct entities. We have developed a risk score incorporating both clinical and genetic factors that accurately classify lean patients with NAFLD, with the potential to serve as a tool for screening purposes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aims of this study were to assess the potential of 16 anthropometric, body composition and endocrine indexes as predictors of high liver fat and determine the most appropriate cut-off points in US adolescents. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on a population of 816 adolescents aged 12-17 years. The FibroScan® 502V2 device was used to estimate the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). Body fat percentage, fat mass, trunk fat percentage and trunk fat mass were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Anthropometric data and metabolic parameters were determined. Receiver operating characteristic curves were analysed to estimate the optimal cut-off points that best identify adolescents with high liver fat (CAP ≥90th percentile). RESULTS In boys, triponderal mass index (TMI) had the highest area under curve (AUC) value (0.865) and the optimal cut-off score for TMI was 17.47 kg/m3 , which had 81.32 sensitivity and 82.99 specificity. In girls, trunk fat index (TFI) had the highest AUC value (0.826) and its optimal cut-off score in screening for high liver fat was 3.76 kg/m2 , which had 74.04 sensitivity and 88.03 specificity. Fat mass index (FMI) index had the second highest AUC values (0.863 in boys 0.812 in girls) in both sex; the cut-off point for the detection of high liver fat was <8.66 kg/m2 for girls and <7.45 kg/m2 for boys. CONCLUSION Assessment of TMI in boys, TFI in girls, and FMI in both sexes are low-cost and easy-to-use parameters that may be useful as early screening tools for possible high liver fat in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between free triiodothyronine/free thyroxine (FT3/FT4) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in euthyroid subjects is unclear. In addition, few studies have explored whether VAI mediates the association between FT3/FT4 ratio and NAFLD in the euthyroid population. We aimed to analyze the mediating effect of VAI on the FT3/FT4 ratio and NAFLD risk in the euthyroid population. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 7 946 annual health examinees from the Health Examination Center, Hebei General Hospital, from January to December 2020. The basic information and biochemical parameters, as well as calculated FT3/FT4 ratio and VAI were collected. NAFLD was diagnosed according to abdominal ultrasonography. The fibrosis score for NAFLD positive subjects (NFS) was calculated to reflect the extent of liver fibrosis. The risk of NAFLD was analyzed by quartiles of FT3/FT4 ratio (Q1-Q4 quartiles) and VAI (V1-V4 quartiles), respectively. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to investigate the correlation between FT3/FT4 ratio and VAI. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied to analyze the effect of FT3/FT4 ratio and VAI on NAFLD and NFS status. Bootstrap was conducted to explore whether VAI mediated the association between FT3/FT4 ratio and NAFLD. RESULTS Of the 7 946 participants, 2 810 (35.36%) had NAFLD and 5 136 (64.64%) did not. Pearson correlation analysis indicated that FT3/FT4 ratio was positively associated with VAI (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that compared to the Q1 group, the risk of NAFLD significantly increased in Q3 group [OR=1.255, 95%CI (1.011, 1.559)] and Q4 group [OR=1.553, 95%CI (1.252, 1.926)](P<0.05). Compared to the V1 group, the risk of NAFLD notably increased in V2 group [OR=1.584, 95%CI (1.205, 2.083)], V3 group [OR=2.386, 95%CI (1.778, 3.202)] and V4 group [OR=4.104, 95%CI (2.835, 5.939)] (P<0.01). There was no relevance between FT3/FT4 ratio, VAI and NFS status. Mediating effect analysis showed that FT3/FT4 ratio significantly directly influenced NAFLD prevalence [β=3.7029, 95%CI (2.9583, 4.4474)], and VAI partly mediated the indirect effect of the FT3/FT4 ratio on NAFLD prevalence [β=2.7649, 95%CI (2.2347, 3.3466)], and the mediating effect accounted for 42.75% of the total effects. CONCLUSION Both FT3/FT4 ratio and VAI were predictors of NAFLD, and VAI partly mediated the indirect effect of the FT3/FT4 ratio on NAFLD prevalence in the euthyroid population.

Abstract
(1) Background: In order to avoid a liver biopsy in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), several noninvasive biomarkers have been studied lately. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the visceral adiposity index (VAI) in NAFLD and liver fibrosis, in addition to its accuracy in predicting NAFLD and NASH. (2) Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library, identifying observational studies assessing the VAI in NAFLD and liver fibrosis. QUADAS-2 was used to evaluate the quality of included studies. The principal summary outcomes were mean difference (MD) and area under the curve (AUC). (3) Results: A total of 24 studies were included in our review. VAI levels were significantly increased in NAFLD (biopsy-proven and ultrasound-diagnosed), simple steatosis vs. controls, and severe steatosis vs. simple steatosis. However, no significant MD was found according to sex, liver fibrosis severity, simple vs. moderate and moderate vs. severe steatosis, pediatric NAFLD, and NASH patients. The VAI predicted NAFLD (AUC 0.767) and NASH (AUC 0.732). (4) Conclusions: The VAI has a predictive value in diagnosing NAFLD and NASH, with significantly increased values in adult NAFLD patients, simple steatosis compared to controls, and severe steatosis compared to simple steatosis.

Abstract
Background: This study was conducted to assess the association of pulse pressure (PP) and visceral adiposity index (VAI) by gender in Korean adults. Methods: This study used the data of 4960 adults at age ≥20 years, from the 2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Results: In the overall population (n = 4960), after adjustment for related variables and with quartile 1 of VAI as a reference, the odds ratios of high PP (PP >60 mmHg) was significantly higher in quartile 3 [1.32 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.02-1.71)] and quartile 4 of VAI [1.40 (95% CI, 1.07-1.83)]. In women (n = 2784), the OR of high PP, with quartile 1 of VAI as a reference, was significantly higher in quartile 3 [2.36 (95% CI, 1.55-3.61)] and quartile 4 of VAI [2.70 (95% CI, 1.77-4.12)]. In men (n = 2176), high PP was not associated with the quartiles of VAI. In addition, after adjustment for related variables, the PP level was positively associated with the quartiles of VAI in the overall population (P < 0.001) and women (P < 0.001), but not in men (P = 0.316). Conclusions: VAI was positively associated with PP in Korean women, but not in Korean men.

Abstract
Adipose tissue and skeletal muscle is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study evaluates the association between body composition and histologic severity in patients with NAFLD. Using the cross-sectional CT images at the level of L3 vertebra and the histologic findings of 178 patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD, we analyzed the correlation of the histologic findings to the skeletal muscle index (SMI), subcutaneous adipose tissue index (SATI), and visceral adipose tissue index (VATI), which is defined as the body composition area (cm2) by height squared (m2). The clinical and laboratory features with body composition were analyzed to determine the risk factors for advanced fibrosis. The VATI significantly increased in severe non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) or advanced fibrosis. In addition, the VATI was correlated with the NAFLD activity score (NAS) and the fibrosis stage. In multivariate analyses, age (odds ratio (OR), 1.09; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.02–1.19; p = 0.025), severe NASH (OR, 8.66; 95% CI, 2.13–46.40; p = 0.005), and visceral adiposity (OR, 6.77; 95% CI, 1.81–29.90; p = 0.007) were independently associated with advanced fibrosis in patients with NAFLD. Visceral adiposity is correlated with the histologic severity of NAFLD, which is independently associated with advanced fibrosis.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered the most common liver disorder, affecting around 25% of the population worldwide. It is a complex disease spectrum, closely linked with other conditions such as obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome, which may increase liver-related mortality. In light of this, numerous efforts have been carried out in recent years in order to clarify its pathogenesis and create new prevention strategies. Currently, the essential role of environmental pollutants in NAFLD development is recognized. Particularly, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have a notable influence. EDCs can be classified as natural (phytoestrogens, genistein, and coumestrol) or synthetic, and the latter ones can be further subdivided into industrial (dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, and alkylphenols), agricultural (pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides), residential (phthalates, polybrominated biphenyls, and bisphenol A), and pharmaceutical (parabens). Several experimental models have proposed a mechanism involving this group of substances with the disruption of hepatic metabolism, which promotes NAFLD. These include an imbalance between lipid influx/efflux in the liver, mitochondrial dysfunction, liver inflammation, and epigenetic reprogramming. It can be concluded that exposure to EDCs might play a crucial role in NAFLD initiation and evolution. However, further investigations supporting these effects in humans are required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to examine the effect of focused ultrasound cavitation augmented with aerobic exercise on localized abdominal and intrahepatic fat in fatty liver patients. METHODS 34 fatty liver patients aged 30-45 with a body mass index (BMI) of 30-40 kg/m2 were randomly assigned into two equally numbered groups. Group A received focused ultrasound cavitation and moderate aerobic exercise for three months, while Group B (control group) received moderate aerobic exercise only. Abdominal subcutaneous fat volume, visceral fat volume, liver-to-spleen ratio (L/S ratio), body weight, BMI, and waist circumference were measured both before and after the study period. RESULTS Both groups showed significant improvements in subcutaneous fat volume, visceral fat volume, body weight, BMI, and waist circumference relative to baseline where (P < 0.001), with a higher percentage in group A. L/S ratio only showed a significant improvement in group A. Between-group differences were noteworthy regarding L/S ratio and waist circumference where (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION While substantial risky measures in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease have been modified by aerobic exercise, its combination with focused ultrasound cavitation causes more notable effects on the reduction of abdominal and intrahepatic fat, making it a superior option. Abstract
Background The effects of visceral adiposity on decreased lung function have drawn much attention. Recently, the visceral adiposity index (VAI) has been proposed as a visceral fat distribution and dysfunction marker. However, the relationship between the VAI and lung function has not been investigated. The objective of the study was to analyze the association between the VAI and lung function and evaluate the potential of VAI as a predictor of lung function. Methods We collected data from a population-based study of 1786 subjects aged 40 years or older. All subjects completed a questionnaire and underwent anthropometric measurements and laboratory tests. Linear and logistic regression models were developed to assess the association between the VAI and lung function. Results The VAI was inversely related to FVC%predicted in men and negatively associated with both FVC%predicted and FEV1%predicted in women. In the linear regression analysis, the decrease in FVC%predicted associated with each 10% increase in the VAI was 1.127% in men and 1.943% in women; the decrease in FEV1%predicted associated with each 10%increase in the VAI was 0.663% in men and 1.738% in women. Further regression analysis revealed that the VAI was positively correlated with FVC and FEV1 impairment in women. Conclusions We were the first to show a clear correlation between the VAI and lung function impairment in the Chinese population. The VAI could be a simple and reliable approach in daily practice, and individuals, especially women with a high VAI, should receive additional screening and preventive interventions for respiratory disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a pathophysiological change based on the abnormal metabolism of many substances. The study aims to investigate the performance of visceral adiposity index (VAI) and lipid accumulation product (LAP) of MetS in young adults. METHODS 448 young adults aged between 19 and 24 years old in Qinhuangdao had been included in this cross-sectional study. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were used to assess the accuracy of these two obesity indicators for MetS. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS was 2.0%. In male subjects, LAP had the highest area under the ROC curve (AUC) value (AUC = 0.963), followed by VAI (AUC = 0.937). In female subjects, LAP also had the highest AUC value (AUC = 0.931), followed by VAI (AUC = 0.861). No significant difference was found between the two obesity indicators (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION The two obesity indicators were valuable for the screening of MetS in young adults, and LAP was the simpler of the two.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide and the anticipated health burden is huge. There are limited therapeutic approaches for NAFLD now. It’s imperative to get a better understanding of the disease pathogenesis if new treatments are to be discovered. As the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome, this disease involves complex interactions between different organs and regulatory pathways. It’s increasingly clear that brain, gut and adipose tissue all contribute to NAFLD pathogenesis and development, in view of their roles in energy homeostasis. In the present review, we try to summarize currently available data regarding NAFLD pathogenesis and to lay a particular emphasis on the inter-organ crosstalk evidence.

Abstract
Aim: Our study aimed to examine the relationship of the visceral adiposity index (VAI) with clinical and histological parameters in biopsy-proven nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) cases and evaluate its place in clinical practice. Materials and Methods: The study included 57 biopsy-proven NAFLD cases and 57 healthy controls. The VAI values of the cases were calculated with the formula based on body mass index, waist circumference, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The relationships between VAI values and clinical and histological parameters were examined. Results: While the VAI was significantly higher in the NAFLD cases in comparison to the control group (3.5 ± 3.09 vs. 1.60 ± 0.98, respectively, P < 0.001), this difference was more noticeable in the nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) group (3.60 ± 3.35) (P < 0.001). In distinguishing the NAFLD group and the healthy group in VAI, it was determined that VAI had a sensitivity of 72%, specificity of 68%, and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve value of 76.9%. No significant relationship was found between the histological parameters and VAI scores. Conclusions: Our study showed that VAI was increased in the NAFLD cases. This increase was observed to be more noticeable in especially the NASH cases. It is possible for this index to be a practical modality that could be used in clinical practice in prediction of especially NASH cases, which constitute the progressive form of the disease, but in this sense, there is a need for further studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Visceral adiposity index (VAI), calculated with body mass index, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride and waist circumference, has been proposed as a marker of visceral fat accumulation and dysfunction. METHODS The impact of VAI on incident nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in a historical cohort study of 8399 (3773 men and 4626 women) participants. NAFLD was defined as having fatty liver diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography. We divided the participants into two groups according to sex and into quartiles according to VAI (Q1-4). We calculated VAI using the formulas. Men: VAI = [waist circumference (WC)/39.68 + (1.88 × body mass index [BMI])] × [triglycerides (TG)/1.03] × [1.31/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL)]; women: VAI = [WC/36.58 + (1.89 × BMI)] × (TG/0.81) × (1.52/HDL). We performed Cox proportional hazard models, adjusting for age, alanine aminotransferase, fasting plasma glucose, systolic blood pressure, alcohol consumption, smoking status and exercise. RESULTS During the median 4.5-year follow-up for men and 4.9-year follow-up for women, 1078 participants (737 men and 341 women) developed NAFLD. The 4000 days cumulative incidence rate of NAFLD for men and women were 7.5% and 2.2% in Q1, 14.5% and 4.0% in Q2, 22.3% and 6.7% in Q3 and 33.8% and 16.7% in Q4. The hazard ratios of incident NAFLD in Q4 (VAI: men, > 1.13; women, > 0.83) were 3.69 (95% confidence interval 2.84-4.86, P < 0.001) in men and 4.93 (3.28-7.73, P < 0.001) in women, compared to Q1 (VAI: men, < 0.44; women, < 0.36). CONCLUSIONS The visceral adiposity index can be a predictor of incident NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is unclear the role of longitudinal trajectory of serum uric acid (SUA) on the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aimed to determine whether longitudinal SUA trajectories are associated with the risk of new-onset NAFLD. METHODS We explored the relationship between SUA trajectories and NAFLD in a cohort including 3822 participants. Individual's SUA trajectories from 2012 to 2014 were defined using group-based trajectory modeling analysis in four distinct patterns: trajectory 1 (n = 991, 25.93%), trajectory 2 (n = 1421, 37.18%), trajectory 3 (n = 1156, 30.22%), and trajectory 4 (n = 254, 6.67%). The logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between SUA changing trajectories and subsequent NAFLD until 2016. Dose-response relationship between SUA changing trajectories and NAFLD risk was evaluated through the testing of trajectory groups as a continuous variable. RESULTS The 2-year incidence of NAFLD was 13.27%. Compared with trajectory 1, the adjusted odds risk for NAFLD development was in a dose-response relationship as follows: 1.27 (95% CI 0.91-1.78) for trajectory 2, 1.89 (95% CI 1.29-2.75) for trajectory 3, and 2.34 (95% CI 1.43-3.83) for trajectory 4. And this dose-response relationship was not affected by age, sex, and abdominal obesity. CONCLUSIONS Higher SUA changing trajectory is a risk factor for NAFLD. This finding highlights the importance of paying attention to SUA changing trajectory on the detection and prevention of NAFLD.

Abstract
Hypertension is the most crucial single contributor to global burden of disease and mortality, while weight loss as a non-pharmacological strategy is recommended to reduce blood pressure. This study aims to examine the association between visceral adipose index (VAI) and hypertension in Chinese adults. Data were collected from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), consisting of 8374 apparently healthy participants aged ≥18 years in the 2009 CHNS for cross-sectional analysis, and 4275 participants at entry from 2009 to 2011 for cohort analysis. Height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure (BP), and blood lipid were measured. Information of population characteristics, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and diet were determined by validated questionnaire. Higher VAI scores were significantly associated with higher BP levels and higher risk of hypertension after adjustment with potential confounders (all p-trend < 0.001). The adjusted hazard ratio of hypertension was 1.526 (95%CI: 1.194, 1.952; p-trend < 0.01) for participants in the highest quartile of VAI scores when compared with those in the lowest quartile after adjustment for age, physical activity, antihypertensive medication, total energy intake, salt intake, and other major lifestyle factors. VAI scores were significantly, longitudinally associated with hypertension development among apparently healthy Chinese adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the correlation between visceral obesity and pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among non-diabetic individuals, and to evaluate the potential of visceral adiposity index (VAI) as a predictor of CKD. PATIENTS AND METHODS From December 2017 to March 2018, 1877 non-diabetic participants (male n=699, female n=1208) in southern China were recruited for a cross-sectional survey. Males and females were divided into four groups according to gender-specific quartiles of VAI scores. A logistic regression model was established to analyze the correlation between visceral adiposity index and CKD. RESULTS Visceral adiposity index was positively correlated with CKD and was negatively associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Using group one as the control, odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to determine the risk of developing CKD as VAI increased (male: group four 2.73 [P<0.005]; female: Group three 1.76 [P<0.05], Group four 2.88 [P<0.005]). When related factors such as history of hypertension, smoking, alcohol use, and physical inactivity were normalized in the logistic model before calculation, ORs became 2.73 (male: P<0.05), and 2.18 (female: P<0.05), respectively. The results differed after normalizing further for systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), hypersensitive c-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), homocysteine (Hcy), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and retinol-binding protein (RBP). There were no significant differences in ORs among the female groups. CONCLUSION Visceral adiposity index was significantly associated with CKD in non-diabetic individuals. It may be a good predictor of the pathogenesis of CKD and was dependent on hsCRP, IL-6, Hcy, SOD, RBP, and blood pressure levels in females and males with VAI scores of 1.41 and higher. Visceral adiposity index may be used to predict CKD in males with VAI less than 0.983.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mechanism by which normal body mass index (BMI) with central adiposity (NWCA) increases the risk of the diseases has not been completely elucidated. The inflammatory role of immunoglobulin G (IgG) N-glycosylation in obesity defined by BMI or central adiposity defined by waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) was reported, respectively. We undertook this three-center cross-sectional study to determine the association between the IgG N-glycans and NWCA. METHODS The participants were categorized into four different phenotypes: normal BMI with normal WHR (NW), normal BMI with central adiposity (NWCA), obesity with normal WHR (ONCA) and obesity with central adiposity (OCA). The IgG N-glycans were analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography analysis of released glycans, and differences among groups were compared. RESULTS In total, 17 out of 24 initial IgG N-glycans were significantly different among the four groups (NW, ONCA, NWCA and OCA) (P<0.05/6*78=0.0001). The changes of IgG glycans in central obesity (12 GPs) were more than those in obesity (3 GPs). In addition, lower galactosylation and bisecting GlcNAc and higher fucosylation were associated with increased risk of NWCA. CONCLUSION Central obesity was involved in more changes of IgG N-glycosylation representing stronger inflammation than obesity, which might make a greater contribution to the risk of related disorders. NWCA was associated with an increased pro-inflammatory of IgG N-glycosylation, which was accompanied by the development of central obesity and other related disorders.
