Biochar-based composites for removing chlorinated organic pollutants: Applications, mechanisms, and perspectives

Chlorinated organic pollutants constitute a significant category of persistent organic pollutants due to their widespread presence in the environment, which is primarily attributed to the expansion of agricultural and industrial activities. These pollutants are characterized by their persistence, potent toxicity, and capability for long-range dispersion, emphasizing the importance of their eradication to mitigate environmental pollution. While conventional methods for removing chlorinated organic pollutants encompass advanced oxidation, catalytic oxidation, and bioremediation, the utilization of biochar has emerged as a prominent green and efficacious method in recent years. Here we review biochar's role in remediating typical chlorinated organics, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), triclosan (TCS), trichloroethene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and chlorobenzenes (CBs). We focus on the impact of biochar material properties on the adsorption mechanisms of chlorinated organics. This review highlights the use of biochar as a sustainable and eco-friendly method for removing chlorinated organic pollutants, especially when combined with biological or chemical strategies. Biochar facilitates electron transfer efficiency between microorganisms, promoting the growth of dechlorinating bacteria and mitigating the toxicity of chlorinated organics through adsorption. Furthermore, biochar can activate processes such as advanced oxidation or nano zero-valent iron, generating free radicals to decompose chlorinated organic compounds. We observe a broader application of biochar and bioprocesses for treating chlorinated organic pollutants in soil, reducing environmental impacts. Conversely, for water-based pollutants, integrating biochar with chemical methods proved more effective, leading to superior purification results. This review contributes to the theoretical and practical application of biochar for removing environmental chlorinated organic pollutants.

Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the surface water of Lipu River, China

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) are inadvertently released into the aquatic environment, causing detrimental effects on aquatic ecosystem. There is an urgent need of an in-deep investigation on contamination information of PPCPs in aquatic environment as well as the ecological risks to the aquatic ecosystem. This study was carried out in Lipu River basin, China, to investigate the distribution pattern and ecological risks of PPCPs. Results showed that PPCPs pollution is ubiquitous, 29 out of 30 targeted PPCPs were detected in Lipu River. Fourteen PPCPs were detected with a frequency of 100% in all water samples, and ten PPCPs were detected with a frequency of more than 80%. The cumulated PPCPs concentrations ranged from 33.30 ng/L to 99.60 ng/L, with a median value of 47.20 ng/L in Lipu River. Caffeine, flumequine, nifedipine, and lomefloxacin were the predominant PPCPs in study area. Caffeine showed high ecological risk, five and seven individual PPCP showed medium and low ecological risk to algae.

Magnetic FNS/MILs nanofibers for highly efficient removal of norfloxacin via adsorption and Fenton-like reaction

Iron-containing MOFs have attracted extensive interest as promising Fenton-like catalysts. In this work, magnetic Fe3O4 nanofiber (FNS)/MOFs composites with stable structure, included FNS/MIL-88B, FNS/MIL-88A and FNS/MIL-100, were prepared via the in-situ solvothermal method. The surface of the obtained fibers was covered by a dense and continuous MOFs layer, which could effectively solve the agglomeration problem of MOFs powder and improved the catalytic performance. The adsorption and catalytic properties of FNS/MOFs composites were evaluated by removal of norfloxacin. FNS/MIL-88B showed the best performance with a maximum adsorption capacity up to 214.09 mg/g, and could degrade 99% of NRF in 60 min. Meanwhile, FNS/MIL-88B had a saturation magnetization of 20 emu/g, and could be rapidly separated by an applied magnetic field. The self-supported nanofibers allowed the adequate contact between MOFs and pollutants, and promoted the catalytic activity and high stability. We believe that this work provided a new idea for the design and preparation of Fenton-like catalysts especially MOFs composites.

Combined effects of pH and dissolved organic matter on the availability of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aqueous environment

The interaction between pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) with dissolved organic matter (DOM) can alter their bioavailability and toxicity. Nevertheless, little is known about how pH and DOM work together to affect the availability of PPCPs. This study investigated the impact of pH and DOM on the availability of seven PPCPs, namely Carbamazepine, Estrone, Bisphenol A, Testosterone Propionate, Triclocarban, 4-tert-Octylphenol and 4-n-Nonylphenol, using negligible depletion solid-phase microextraction (nd-SPME). The uptake kinetics of PPCPs by the nd-SPME fibers increased proportionally with DOM concentrations, likely due to enhanced diffusive conductivity in the unstirred water layer. At neutral pH, the partitioning coefficients of PPCPs for Humic Acid (log KDOC 3.87-5.25) were marginally higher than those for Fulvic Acid (log KDOC 3.64-5.11). Also, the log KDOC values correlated linearly with the log DOW (pH 7.0) values of PPCPs, indicating a predominant role for hydrophobic interactions in the binding of DOM and PPCPs. Additionally, specific interactions like hydrogen bonding, π-π, and electrostatic interactions occur for certain compounds, influenced by the polarity and spatial conformation of the compounds. For these ionizable PPCPs, the log DDOC values exhibit a strong dependence on pH due to the dual influence of pH on both DOM and PPCPs. The log DDOC values rose from pH 1.0 to 3.0, peaked at pH 5.0 to 9.0, and then (sharply) declined from 11.0 to 13.0. The reasons are that in strong acidic circumstances, the coiled and compressed shape of DOM inhibits the hydrophobic interaction, whereas in strong alkaline conditions, significant electrostatic repulsion reduces the sorption. This study reveals that the effects of DOM on the bioavailability of PPCPs are dependent on both pH and the specific compound involved.

When antibiotics encounter microplastics in aquatic environments: Interaction, combined toxicity, and risk assessments

Antibiotics and microplastics (MPs), known as emerging pollutants, are bound to coexist in aquatic environments due to their widespread distribution and prolonged persistence. To date, few systematic summaries are available for the interaction between MPs and antibiotics in aquatic ecosystems, and a comprehensive reanalysis of their combined toxicity is also needed. Based on the collected published data, we have analyzed the source and distribution of MPs and antibiotics in global aquatic environments, finding their coexistence occurs in a lot of study sites. Accordingly, the presence of MPs can directly alter the environmental behavior of antibiotics. The main influencing factors of interaction between antibiotics and MPs have been summarized in terms of the characteristics of MPs and antibiotics, as well as the environmental factors. Then, we have conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the combined toxicity of antibiotics and MPs on aquatic organisms and the related toxicity indicators, suggesting a significant adverse effect on algae, and inapparent on fish and daphnia. Finally, the environmental risk assessments for antibiotics and MPs were discussed, but unfortunately the standardized methodology for the risk assessment of MPs is still challenging, let alone assessment for their combined toxicity. This review provides insights into the interactions and environment risks of antibiotics and MPs in the aquatic environment, and suggests perspectives for future research.

Global performance and trends of research on emerging contaminants in sewage sludge: A Bibliometric Analysis from 1990 to 2023

The pervasive occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs) in sewage sludge (SWS) poses significant safety challenges concerning the processing, disposal, and secure application, ultimately jeopardizing both human health and the ecological environment. To comprehensively comprehend the evolutionary trajectories, present state, and research advancements in the field of ECs in SWS, a systematic was conducted, scrutinizing the annual publication quantity, disciplinary distribution, core authors, involved nations/regions, pertinent keywords, and citation status of 2082 research publications related to ECs in SWS from 1990 to 2023. The results indicate a substantial upward trajectory in the research literature pertaining to ECs in SWS. The study of ECs in SWS encompasses 78 disciplines, including Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, and Water Resources. China, Spain, and the USA ranked among the top three countries in terms of both total publications and citation frequency. The majority of publications were published in reputable high-impact journals such as Science of the Total Environment, Chemosphere, and Bioresource Technology. Based on high-frequency keywords, co-occurrence networks of keywords, and keywords burst analysis, it is found that the occurrence and environment behavior of ECs in SWS (ARGs, microplastics, PPCPs, and POPs), the detection and analytical methods, the impact on SWS treatment and disposal processes, and the accumulation and ecological risks in plants and soil during SWS land utilization, are the main research directions and hot topics in this field. In the future, the study of the impact of SWS treatment technologies on ECs removal is expected to receive increased research attention.

ChemFREE: a one-stop comprehensive platform for ecological and environmental risk evaluation of chemicals in one health world

Addressing health and safety crises stemming from various environmental and ecological issues is a core focus of One Health (OH), which aims to balance and optimize the health of humans, animals, and the environment. While many chemicals contribute significantly to our quality of life when properly used, others pose environmental and ecological health risks. Recently, assessing the ecological and environmental risks associated with chemicals has gained increasing significance in the OH world. In silico models may address time-consuming and costly challenges, and fill gaps in situations where no experimental data is available. However, despite their significant contributions, these assessment models are not web-integrated, leading to user inconvenience. In this study, we developed a one-stop comprehensive web platform for freely evaluating the eco-environmental risk of chemicals, named ChemFREE (Chemical Formula Risk Evaluation of Eco-environment, available in http://chemfree.agroda.cn/chemfree/). Inputting SMILES string of chemicals, users will obtain the assessment outputs of ecological and environmental risk, etc. A performance evaluation of 2935 external chemicals revealed that most classification models achieved an accuracy rate above 0.816. Additionally, the $Q_{F1}^2$ metric for regression models ranges from 0.618 to 0.898. Therefore, it will facilitate the eco-environmental risk evaluation of chemicals in the OH world.

Efficiently photocatalysis activation of peroxymonosulfate by bimetallic metal-organic frameworks Mn-MIL-53(Fe) for ibuprofen degradation: Synergistic efficiency, mechanism and degradation pathways

In this study, a UV-driven photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system was constructed using bimetallic metal-organic frameworks to degrade pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Mn-MIL-53(Fe) was successfully synthesised by adjusting the doping ratio of Mn using solvothermal method. The removal of ibuprofen (IBP) by UV/Mn-MIL-53(Fe)/PMS process was as high as 79.7% in 30 min with a Mn doping ratio of 1.0 (molar ratio of Mn to Fe), and the reaction rate constant was 26.9% higher than undoped. Mn-MIL-53(Fe) had been systematically characterized in terms of its physical structure, microscopic morphology, surface functional groups and photoelectric properties. The mechanism investigation revealed that the cycling of Mn and Fe accelerated the rate of electron transfer in the system, which significantly increased the activation efficacy of PMS to generate more hydroxyl and sulfate radicals for IBP degradation. A total of 13 transformation products were detected during the degradation of IBP by the UV/Mn-MIL-53(Fe)/PMS process. Theoretical calculations were used to predict the sites on the IBP molecule that were vulnerable to attack, and four possible degradation pathways were deduced. The excellent stability and efficient catalytic properties of Mn-MIL-53(Fe) provided a promising solution to the problem of water treatment contaminated with PPCPs.

Evidence of deviations between experimental and empirical mixing lengths: Multi-discharge field tests in an arid river system

Despite advances in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) efficiencies, multiple contaminants of concern, such as microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remain largely untreated near discharge points and can be highly concentrated before they are fully mixed within the receiving river. Environmental agencies enforce mixing zone permits for the temporary exceedance of water quality parameters beyond targeted control levels under the assumption that contaminants are well-mixed and diluted downstream of mixing lengths, which are typically quantified using empirical equations derived from one-dimensional transport models. Most of these equations were developed in the 1970s and have been assumed to be standard practice since then. However, their development and validation lacked the technological advances required to test them in the field and under changing flow conditions. While new monitoring techniques such as remote sensing and infrared imaging have been employed to visualize mixing lengths and test the validity of empirical equations, those methods cannot be easily repeated due to high costs or flight restrictions. We investigated the application of Lagrangian and Eulerian monitoring approaches to experimentally quantify mixing lengths downstream of a WWTP discharging into the Rio Grande near Albuquerque, New Mexico (USA). Our data spans river to WWTP discharges ranging between 2-22x, thus providing a unique dataset to test long-standing empirical equations in the field. Our results consistently show empirical equations could not describe our experimental mixing lengths. Specifically, while our experimental data revealed "bell-shaped" mixing lengths as a function of increasing river discharges, all empirical equations predicted monotonically increasing mixing lengths. Those mismatches between experimental and empirical mixing lengths are likely due to the existence of threshold processes defining mixing at different flow regimes, i.e., jet diffusion at low flows, the Coanda effect at intermediate flows, and turbulent mixing at higher flows, which are unaccounted for by the one-dimensional empirical formulas. Our results call for a review of the use of empirical mixing lengths in streams and rivers to avoid widespread exposures to emerging contaminants.

Temperature-dependent toxicity of fluoxetine alters the thermal plasticity of marine diatoms

Anthropogenic activities have led to the emergence of pharmaceutical pollution in marine ecosystems, posing a significant threat to biodiversity in conjunction with global climate change. While the ecotoxicity of human drugs on aquatic organisms is increasingly recognized, their interactions with environmental factors, such as temperature, remain understudied. This research investigates the physiological effects of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), fluoxetine, on two diatom species, Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Thalassiosira weissflogii. Results demonstrate that fluoxetine significantly reduces growth rate and biomass production, concurrently affecting pigment contents and the thermal performance curve (TPC) of the diatoms. Fluoxetine reduces the synthesis of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and carotenoid (Car), indicating inhibition of photosynthesis and photoprotection. Furthermore, fluoxetine decreases the maximum growth rate (μmax) while increasing the optimum temperature (Topt) in both species, suggesting an altered thermal plasticity. This shift is attributed to the observed decrease in the inhibition rate of fluoxetine with rising temperatures. These findings emphasize the physiological impacts and ecological implications of fluoxetine on phytoplankton and underscore the significance of considering interactions between multiple environmental drivers when accessing the ecotoxicity of potential pollutants. The present study provides insights into crucial considerations for evaluating the impacts of pharmaceutical pollution on marine primary producers.

A combined toxicological impact on Artemia salina caused by the presence of dust particles, microplastics from cosmetics, and paracetamol

Environmental pollution poses a significant and pressing threat to the overall well-being of aquatic ecosystems in modern society. This study showed that pollutants like dusts from AC filter, fan wings and Traffic dust PM 2.5 were exposed to Artemia salina in pristine form and in combination. The findings indicated that exposure to multi-pollutants had a detrimental effect on the hatching rates of A. salina cysts. Compared to untreated A. salina, the morphology of adult (7th day old) A. salina changed noticeably after each incubation period (24-120 h). Oxidative stress increased considerably as the exposure duration increased from 24 to 120 h compared to the control group. There was a time-dependent decline in antioxidant enzyme activity and total protein concentration. When all particles were used all together, the total protein content in A. salina decreased significantly. All particles showed a considerable decline in survival rate. Those exposed to traffic dust particles showed significantly higher levels of oxidative stress and antioxidant activity than those exposed to other particles.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of emerging pollutants in aquatic environments: A review

Significant concerns on a global scale have been raised in response to the potential adverse impacts of emerging pollutants (EPs) on aquatic creatures. We have carefully reviewed relevant research over the past 10 years. The study focuses on five typical EPs: pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), drinking water disinfection byproducts (DBPs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and microplastics (MPs). The presence of EPs in the global aquatic environment is source-dependent, with wastewater treatment plants being the main source of EPs. Multiple studies have consistently shown that the final destination of most EPs in the water environment is sludge and sediment. Simultaneously, a number of EPs, such as PFASs, MPs, and BFRs, have long-term environmental transport potential. Some EPs exhibit notable tendencies towards bioaccumulation and biomagnification, while others pose challenges in terms of their degradation within both biological and abiotic treatment processes. The results showed that, in most cases, the ecological risk of EPs in aquatic environments was low, possibly due to potential dilution and degradation. Future research topics should include adding EPs detection items for the aquatic environment, combining pollution, and updating prediction models.

Synthetic musks in the natural environment: Sources, occurrence, concentration, and fate-A review of recent developments (2010-2023)

Synthetic musks (SMs) have served as cost-effective substitutes for natural musk compounds in personal care and daily chemical products for decades. Their widespread use has led to their detection in various environmental matrices, raising concerns about potential risks. Despite numerous studies on SM levels in different natural environments, a systematic review of their contemporary presence is lacking. This review aims to address this gap by summarising recent research developments on SMs in diverse natural environments, including river water, lake water, seawater, estuarine water, groundwater, snow, meltwater, sediments, aquatic suspended matter, soils, sands, outdoor air, and atmospheric particulate matter. Covering the period from 2010 to 2023, the review focuses on four SM categories: nitro, polycyclic, macrocyclic, and alicyclic. It systematically examines their sources, occurrences, concentrations, spatial and temporal variations, and fate. The literature reveals widespread detection of SMs in the natural environment (freshwater and sediments in particular), with polycyclic musks being the most studied group. Both direct (e.g., wastewater discharges) and indirect (e.g., human recreational activities) sources contribute to SM presence. Levels of SMs vary greatly among studies with higher levels observed in certain regions, such as sediments in Southeast Asia. Spatial and temporal variations are also evident. The fate of SMs in the environment depends on their physicochemical properties and environmental processes, including bioaccumulation, biodegradation, photodegradation, adsorption, phase exchange, hydro-dilution effects. Biodegradation and photodegradation can decrease SM levels, but may produce more persistent and eco-toxic products. Modelling approaches have been employed to analyse SM fate, especially for indirect processes like photodegradation or long-distance atmospheric transport. Future studies should further investigate the complex fate if SMs and their environmental influence. This review enhances understanding of SM status in the natural environment and supports efforts to control environmental contamination.

Evaluating quaternium-15 effects on Mytilus galloprovincialis: New insights on physiological and cellular responses

Among personal care products, quaternium-15 is prominently featured as a preservative in items such as shampoos, soaps, shaving products, and cosmetics. The widespread use of these products in people's daily routines contributes to quaternium-15 release into aquatic ecosystems. In this context, the primary aim of the study was to assess the physiological and cellular responses of the digestive gland and gills in Mytilus galloprovincialis to quaternium-15 exposure. Cell viability and the ability of digestive gland cells to regulate their volume were evaluated. Additionally, the expression of the genes involved in oxidative stress response was assessed to further substantiate the compound's harmful effects. Results indicated a significant decrease in both the viability of digestive gland cells and their RVD (regulatory volume decrease) capacity when exposed to a hypotonic solution. Furthermore, impairment of digestive gland cell function was corroborated by the modulation of oxidative stress-related gene expression, including SOD, Cat, as well as Hsp70 and CYP4Y1. Similar gene expression alterations were observed in the gills, reflecting impaired functionality in this vital organ as well. In summary, the outcomes of the study provide conclusive evidence of the toxicity of quaternium-15. This underscores the urgent need to further investigate the toxicological effects of this contaminant on aquatic ecosystems and emphasises the necessity of limiting the use of products containing quaternium-15.

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Aquatic Environment: How Can Regions at Risk be Identified in the Future?

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are an indispensable component of a healthy society. However, they are well-established environmental contaminants, and many can elicit biological disruption in exposed organisms. It is now a decade since the landmark review covering the top 20 questions on PPCPs in the environment (Boxall et al., 2012). In the present study we discuss key research priorities for the next 10 years with a focus on how regions where PPCPs pose the greatest risk to environmental and human health, either now or in the future, can be identified. Specifically, we discuss why this problem is of importance and review our current understanding of PPCPs in the aquatic environment. Foci include PPCP occurrence and what drives their environmental emission as well as our ability to both quantify and model their distribution. We highlight critical areas for future research including the involvement of citizen science for environmental monitoring and using modeling techniques to bridge the gap between research capacity and needs. Because prioritization of regions in need of environmental monitoring is needed to assess future/current risks, we also propose four criteria with which this may be achieved. By applying these criteria to available monitoring data, we narrow the focus on where monitoring efforts for PPCPs are most urgent. Specifically, we highlight 19 cities across Africa, Central America, the Caribbean, and Asia as priorities for future environmental monitoring and risk characterization and define four priority research questions for the next 10 years. What Approaches Should be Used to Prioritize Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products for Research on Environmental and Human Health Exposure and Effects?

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are released from multiple anthropogenic sources and thus have a ubiquitous presence in the environment. The environmental exposure and potential effects of PPCPs on biota and humans has aroused concern within the scientific community and the public. Risk assessments are commonly conducted to evaluate the likelihood of chemicals including PPCPs that pose health threats to organisms inhabiting various environmental compartments and humans. Because thousands of PPCPs are currently used, it is impractical to assess the environmental risk of all of them due to data limitations; in addition, new PPCPs are continually being produced. Prioritization approaches, based either on exposure, hazard, or risk, provide a possible means by which those PPCPs that are likely to pose the greatest risk to the environment are identified, thereby enabling more effective allocation of resources in environmental monitoring programs in specific geographical locations and ecotoxicological investigations. In the present review, the importance and current knowledge concerning PPCP occurrence and risk are discussed and priorities for future research are proposed, in terms of PPCP exposure (e.g., optimization of exposure modeling in freshwater ecosystems and more monitoring of PPCPs in the marine environment) or hazard (e.g., differential risk of PPCPs to lower vs. higher trophic level species and risks to human health). Correlations between China's socioeconomic status, disease burdens, and pharmaceuticals and personal care product levels in wastewater

The presence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in domestic wastewater can potentially indicate socioeconomic status and disease burdens. However, current knowledge is limited to the correlation between specific pharmaceuticals and diseases. This study aims to explore the associations between socioeconomic status, disease burdens, and PPCP levels in domestic wastewater at a national level. Samples from 171 wastewater influents across China were used to measure PPCPs, and the per capita consumption of PPCPs was calculated. Results showed that the 31 targeted PPCPs were widely present in wastewater with varying occurrence characteristics. The mean consumption levels of different PPCPs varied greatly, ranging from 0.03 to 110723.15 µg/d/capita. While there were no significant regional differences in the overall pattern of PPCP consumption, 22 PPCPs showed regional variations between Northern China and Southern China. PPCPs with similar usage purposes exhibited similar distribution patterns. Disease burden (70.1%) was the main factor affecting most PPCP consumption compared to socioeconomic factors (26.4%). Through correlation analyses, specific types of PPCPs were identified that were highly associated with socioeconomic status and disease burdens, such as hypertension-bezafibrate, brucellosis-quinolones, sulfonamides, hepatitis-triclosan, triclocarban, socioeconomic development-fluoxetine, and people's living standards-gemfibrozil. Despite some uncertainties, this study provides valuable insights into the relationship between PPCPs in domestic wastewater and socioeconomic status and human health.

The pleiotropic role of Salinicoccus bacteria in enhancing ROS homeostasis and detoxification metabolism in soybean and oat to cope with pollution of triclosan

Triclosan has been extensively used as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products. However, its accumulation represents a real environmental threat. Thus, its phytotoxic impact needs more consideration. Our study was conducted to highlight the phytotoxic effect of triclosan on the growth, ROS homeostasis, and detoxification metabolism of two different plant species i.e., legumes (Glycine max) and grass (Avena sativa). Moreover, we investigated the potentiality of plant growth-promoting bacteria (ST-PGPB) in mitigating the phytotoxic effect of triclosan. Triclosan induced biomass (fresh and dry weights) reduction in both plants, but to a higher extent in oats. This decline was associated with a noticeable increment in the oxidative damage (e.g., MDA and H2O2) and detoxification metabolites such as metallothionein (MTC), phytochelatins (PCs), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). This elevation was associated with a remarkable reduction in both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. On the other hand, the bioactive strain of ST-PGPB, Salinicoccus sp. JzA1 significantly alleviated the harmful effect of triclosan on both soybean and oat plants by enhancing their biomass, photosynthesis, as well as levels of minerals (K, Ca, P, Mn, and Zn). In parallel, a striking quenching in oxidative damage and an obvious improvement in non-enzymatic (polyphenols, tocopherols, flavonoids) and enzymatic antioxidants were observed. Furthermore, Salinicoccus sp. JzA1 augmented the detoxification metabolism by enhancing the levels of phytochelatins, metallothionein, and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity in a species-specific manner which is more apparent in soybean rather than in oat plants. To this end, stress mitigating impact of Salinicoccus sp. JzA1 provides a basis to improve the resilience of crop species under cosmetics and personal care products toxicity.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals in Vietnamese marine fish: Occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment

The release of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) into the aquatic environment, specifically the oceans, is increasing, leading to adverse effects on the marine ecosystem. Using optimized QuEChERS extraction methods, the study created the first contamination profiles of 44 EDCs, including organic ultraviolet compounds, pharmaceutically active compounds, hormones, and phthalate esters, in 114 fish muscle samples from five species collected along the Vietnamese coast. The study found that largehead hairtail exhibited the highest total EDCs at 208.3 ng g-1 lipid weight (lw), while Indian catfish displayed the lowest concentration at 105.5 ng g-1 lw. Besides, the study observed notable variations in the total EDCs across distinct fish species. This study hypothesized that the marine economic characteristics of each research location have a significant role in shaping the pollution profile of EDCs found in fish specimens taken from the corresponding area. As a result, a notable disparity in the composition of organic ultraviolet compounds has been observed among the three regions of North, Central, and South Vietnam (Mann-Whitney U test, p < 0.05). Despite these findings, EDC-contaminated fish did not pose any health risks to Vietnam's coastal population.

Application of passive sampling device for exploring the occurrence, distribution, and risk of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in surface water

Pharmaceuticals and pesticides are compounds of high concern in surface waters around the world. However, few studies have used passive sampling methods to screen and detect these compounds in natural waters. In this study, a self-developed passive sampler was employed to measure pharmaceuticals and pesticides in the rivers of Nanjing, China. A total of 41 pharmaceuticals and 11 pesticides were detected, among which antibiotic and insecticide were the predominant classes, respectively. Valproic acid, caffeine and triclosan from the pharmaceuticals, and isoprocarb and imidacloprid from the pesticides were found frequently with high concentrations. At most sampling sites, the concentration ratios of caffeine versus carbamazepine exceeded 10, and even above 50, indicating relatively poor efficiency of wastewater treatment, or possibly the direct discharge of raw sewage, or other unknown source of pollution. It was found that the concentrations and ecological risks in the northern area of Yangtze River were higher than those in the southern area of Yangtze River, implying that economic development and population density were not the main contributors to the discovered pollution. The total concentration of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in Qinhuai River increased gradually with the direction of water flow, demonstrating the success of water diversion project in flushing and scouring pollutants.

Distribution, ecological risks and priority of pharmaceuticals in the coastal water of Qinhuangdao, China

Although there has been a surge of interest in research focused on the presence of pharmaceuticals in the marine environment, study on the distribution and risks of pharmaceuticals in coastal waters remains inadequately documented due to the specific features of the marine environment, such as strong dilution, high salinity, and complex hydrodynamics. In this study, thirty pharmaceuticals with diverse physicochemical properties were analyzed in a coastal sea with low hydrodynamic energy caused by various artificial structures. The results indicate that 14 compounds were detected in seawater, with concentrations ranging from <1 to 201.4 ng L-1, among which caffeine, metoprolol, and atenolol were detected at high levels. Statistical analysis reveals the prevalence of the most target pharmaceuticals with downward trends in concentrations from estuary to offshore region, demonstrating the significant impacts of riverine inputs on the coastal water. Nevertheless, the distribution patterns of caffeine and atenolol were intricate, suggesting that they may have also originated from other unknown sources. A newly-developed method combining risk quotient (RQ) and species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models was used in ecological risk assessment. The results indicate generally higher risks of target pharmaceuticals in the estuary compared to the offshore region, with caffeine, carbamazepine, and norfloxacin identified as the top three priority pollutants.

Inhibition of algal blooms by residual antibiotics in aquatic environments: Design, screening, and validation of antibiotic alternatives

Water blooms frequently appear in the aquatic environment with global warming. However, traditional methods for treating water bloom usually require the addition of algaecides, which may lead to secondary environmental pollution problems in the water environment. To solve this problem, researchers have initiated efforts to harness pre-existing chemical substances within aquatic environments to regulate algal blooms, thereby pioneering novel avenues for water body management. Therefore, an integrated approach involving molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR), and toxicokinetics methods were utilized for the molecular modification of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, to design and screen fluoroquinolone substitutes with improved toxicity of cyanobacteria and green algae, functionality, and environmental friendliness. A total of 143 fluoroquinolone alternatives were designed in this study, and lomefloxacin-6 (LOM6) was found as the optimum alternative to lomefloxacin (LOM), with increased toxicity to cyanobacteria and green algae by 31 % and 72 %. Molecular docking of LOM before and after modification with seven other cyanobacterial and green algal photosynthetic proteins revealed that LOM6 exhibited varying degrees of increased toxicity towards 6 of these photosynthetic proteins, of which 2J96 protein increased the most (136.25 %). It shows that the residual LOM6 in the water environment has a certain inhibitory effect on the algae bloom. In addition, results showed that LOM6 had synergistic toxic effects on cyanobacteria and green algae with other pollutants residual in the aqueous environment, such as trichloroethyl phosphate, triethyl phosphate, perfluorononanoic acid, perfluorooctanoic acid. This indicates that LOM6 has better algal removal effectiveness in aqueous environments where organophosphate flame retardants and perfluorinated compounds exist together. In this paper, a novel method was developed to remove cyanobacteria and green algae in water environment and reduce the secondary pollution through theoretical simulation, which provides theoretical support for the control of water blooms.

Noxious ramifications of cosmetic pollutants on gastrointestinal microbiome: A pathway to neurological disorders

On exposure to cosmetic pollutants, gastrointestinal dysbiosis, which is characterised by a disturbance in the gut microbiota, has come into focus as a possible contributor to the occurrence of neurotoxic consequences. It is normal practice to use personal care products that include parabens, phthalates, sulphates, triclosans/triclocarbans and micro/nano plastics. These substances have been found in a variety of bodily fluids and tissues, demonstrating their systemic dispersion. Being exposed to these cosmetic pollutants has been linked in recent research to neurotoxicity, including cognitive decline and neurodevelopmental problems. A vital part of sustaining gut health and general well-being is the gut flora. Increased intestinal permeability, persistent inflammation, and impaired metabolism may result from disruption of the gut microbial environment, which may in turn contribute to neurotoxicity. The link between gastrointestinal dysbiosis and the neurotoxic effects brought on by cosmetic pollutants may be explained by a number of processes, primarily the gut-brain axis. For the purpose of creating preventative and therapeutic measures, it is crucial to comprehend the intricate interactions involving cosmetic pollutants, gastrointestinal dysbiosis, and neurotoxicity. This review provides an in-depth understanding of the various hazardous cosmetic pollutants and its potential role in the occurrence of neurological disorders via gastrointestinal dysbiosis, providing insights into various described and hypothetical mechanisms regarding the complex toxic effects of these industrial pollutants.

Occurrence, Distribution, and Trophic Transfer of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Bohai Sea

The ubiquitous presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in environments has aroused global concerns; however, minimal information is available regarding their multimedia distribution, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer in marine environments. Herein, we analyzed 77 representative PPCPs in samples of surface and bottom seawater, surface sediments, and benthic biota from the Bohai Sea. PPCPs were pervasively detected in seawater, sediments, and benthic biota, with antioxidants being the most abundant PPCPs. PPCP concentrations positively correlated between the surface and bottom water with a decreasing trend from the coast to the central oceans. Higher PPCP concentrations in sediment were found in the Yellow River estuary, and the variations in the physicochemical properties of PPCPs and sediment produced a different distribution pattern of PPCPs in sediment from seawater. The log Dow, but not log Kow, showed a linear and positive relationship with bioaccumulation and trophic magnification factors and a parabolic relationship with biota-sediment accumulation factors. The trophodynamics of miconazole and acetophenone are reported for the first time. This study provides novel insights into the multimedia distribution and biomagnification potential of PPCPs and suggests that log Dow is a better indicator of their bioaccumulation and trophic magnification.

Enhancing membrane separation performance in the conditions of different water electrical conductivity and fouling types via surface grafting modification of a nanofiltration membrane, NF90

A commercialized and widely applied nanofiltration membrane, NF90, was in-situ modified through a surface grafting modification method by using 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt and initiators. The effects of water electrical conductivity (EC) and fouling types on membrane separation efficiency were examined before and after membrane modification. Results reveal that both the pristine membrane (PTM) and surface grafting modification membrane (SGMM) had a declining permeate flux and salt (NaCl) removal efficiency but an increasing trend of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) removal with increasing water EC from 250 to 10,000 μs cm-1. However, SGMM exhibited a slightly declining permeate flux but 13%-17% and 1%-42% higher rejection of salt and PPCPs, respectively, compared with PTM, due to electrostatic repulsion and size exclusion provided by the grafted polymer. After sodium alginate (SA) and humic acid (HA) fouling, SGMM had 17%-26% and 16%-32% higher salt rejection and 1%-12% and 1%-51% greater PPCP removal, respectively, compared with PTM due to the additional steric barrier layer contributed by the foulants. The successful grafting and increasing hydrophilicity of the SGMM were confirmed by contact angle analysis, which was beneficial for mitigating membrane fouling. Overall, the proposed in-situ surface grafting modification of NF90 can considerably mitigate organic and biological fouling while raising the rejection of salt and PPCPs at different background water EC, which is beneficial for practical applications in producing clean and high quality water for consumers.

Enantioselective uptake and translocation of atenolol in higher plants

The presence of pharmaceuticals in surface water and wastewater has been an increasing area of research since they can represent a possible route for human exposure when these waters are used to irrigate crops. The concentration of these drugs in crops depends on their uptake and translocation within plants. A less recognized question is that over 50 % of pharmaceuticals are chiral compounds, but there is little knowledge about their enantioselectivity in plants. In this study, we evaluated the uptake, bioconcentration, and translocation of enantiomers of atenolol, a commonly used beta-blocker, in Arabidopsis thaliana cells and Lactuca sativa plants under hydroponic conditions. Atenolol was taken up by Arabidopsis thaliana cells during 120 h of exposure to solutions with 1 mg/L of R/S-(±)-atenolol. A moderate preference for R-(+)-atenolol over S-(-)-atenolol was observed, with the enantiomeric fraction (EF) reaching 0.532 ± 0.002 for the R enantiomer. Atenolol was also taken up and translocated by Lactuca sativa after hydroponic cultivation in nutrient solutions containing 1 or 10 μg/L R/S-(±)-atenolol. Moderate enantioselectivity was detected in the treatment with 10 μg/L, and the EF after 168 h was 0.42 ± 0.01, suggesting that S-(-)-atenolol was preferentially accumulated. Selectivity was also observed in the translocation factor (TF), calculated as the ratio of the concentration in the leaves over that in the roots. As many emerging contaminants are chiral, our findings highlight the importance to consider their fate and risks in terrestrial ecosystems at the enantiomer scale.

Changes in chemical occurrence, concentration, and bioactivity in the Colorado River before and after replacement of the Moab, Utah wastewater treatment plant

Long-term (2010-19) water-quality monitoring on the Colorado River downstream from Moab Utah indicated the persistent presence of Bioactive Chemicals (BC), such as pesticides and pharmaceuticals. This stream reach near Canyonlands National Park provides critical habitat for federally endangered species. The Moab wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) outfall discharges to the Colorado River and is the nearest potential point-source to this reach. The original WWTP was replaced in 2018. In 2016-19, a study was completed to determine if the new plant reduced BC input to the Colorado River at, and downstream from, the outfall. Water samples were collected before and after the plant replacement at sites upstream and downstream from the outfall. Samples were analyzed for as many as 243 pesticides, 109 pharmaceuticals, 20 hormones, 51 wastewater indicator chemicals, 20 metals, and 8 nutrients. BC concentrations, hazard quotients (HQs), and exposure activity ratios (EARs) were used to identify and prioritize contaminants for their potential to have adverse biological effects on the health of native and endangered wildlife. There were 22 BC with HQs >1, mostly metals and hormones; and 23 BC with EARs >0.1, mostly hormones and pharmaceuticals. Most high HQs or EARs were associated with samples collected at the WWTP outfall site prior to its replacement. Discharge from the new plant had reduced concentrations of nutrients, hormones, pharmaceuticals, and other BC. For example, all 16 of the hormones detected at the WWTP outfall site had maximum concentrations in samples collected prior to the WWTP replacement. The WWTP replacement had less effect on instream concentrations of metals and pesticides, BC whose sources are less directly tied to domestic wastewater. Study results indicate that improved WWTP technology can create substantial reductions in concentrations of non-regulated BC such as pharmaceuticals, in addition to regulated contaminants such as nutrients.

Recent Advances on Electrochemical Sensors for Detection of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs)

Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), a new category of contaminants currently in the limelight, are a major issue of global concern. The pervasive nature of CECs and their harmful effects, such as cancer, reproductive disorders, neurotoxicity, etc., make the situation alarming. The perilous nature of CECs lies in the fact that even very small concentrations of CECs can cause great impacts on living beings. They also have a nature of bioaccumulation. Thus, there is a great need to have efficient sensors for the detection of CECs to ensure a safe living environment. Electrochemical sensors are an efficient platform for CEC detection as they are highly selective, sensitive, stable, reproducible, and prompt, and can detect very low concentrations of the analyte. Major classes of CECs are pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, personal care products, endocrine disruptors, newly registered pesticides, and disinfection by-products. This review focusses on CECs, including their sources and pathways, health effects caused by them, and electrochemical sensors as reported in the literature under each category for the detection of major CECs.

Selection of priority emerging contaminants in surface waters of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka

The challenge of emerging contaminants (ECs) in global surface water bodies and particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, is evident from the literature. The complexity arises from the high costs involved in EC analysis and the extensive list of ECs, which complicates the selection of essential compounds for scientific and regulatory investigations. Consequently, monitoring programs often include ECs that may have minimal significance within a region and do not pose known or suspected ecological or human health risks. This study aims to address this issue by employing a multi-risk assessment approach to identify priority ECs in the surface waters of the aforementioned countries. Through an analysis of occurrence levels and frequency data gathered from published literature, an optimized risk quotient (RQ) was derived. The findings reveal a priority list of 38 compounds that exhibit potential environmental risks and merit consideration in future water quality monitoring programs. Furthermore, the majority of antibiotics in India (12 out of 17) and Pakistan (7 out of 17) exhibit a risk quotient for antimicrobial resistance selection (RQAMR) greater than 1, highlighting the need for devising effective strategies to mitigate the escalation of antibiotic resistance in the environment.

Novel PFOS alternative OBS inhibits body growth of developing zebrafish by triggering thyroid function disorder and osteoclast differentiation

The extensive use of the perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) alternative sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS) has resulted in its widespread detection in the environment and enrichment in wildlife and humans. However, little is known about its potential toxicity, particularly in terms of body development. In this study, zebrafish embryos were acutely exposed to PFOS and OBS for a comparative developmental toxicity assessment. Both PFOS and OBS led to lower body weight and shorter body length, and the damaging effects of PFOS were more severe than those of OBS at the same exposure concentration. Biochemical assays of THs and transcription profiles correlated to the HPT axis demonstrated that OBS-induced body development inhibition resulted mainly from interference in THs synthesis, transfer, coupling with receptors, and conversion from T4 to T3, which was similar to the case of PFOS, except that the disruptive effects of OBS on thyroid function were more intense. Further transcriptome analysis showed that PFOS and OBS also promoted osteoclast differentiation, aggravating the inhibitory effects on body growth, and that PFOS had more obvious inhibitory effects than OBS. This study systematically explored the inhibitory effects of PFOS and OBS exposure on body development and tightly linked the toxic effects to thyroid function disorder and osteoclast differentiation. Our findings highlight that the health risks associated with OBS, an emerging substitute for PFOS, should not be ignored.

Ketoprofen exposure perturbs nitrogen assimilation and ATP synthesis in rice roots: An integrated metabolome and microbiome analysis

Ketoprofen, a commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), can enter farmland environments via sewage irrigation and manure application and is toxic to plants. However, there have been relatively few studies on the association of ketoprofen with nitrogen (N) assimilation and metabolic responses in plants. Accordingly, the goal of this study was to investigate the effects of ketoprofen on ATP synthesis and N assimilation in rice roots. The results showed that with increasing ketoprofen concentration, root vitality, respiration rate, ATP content, and H+-ATPase activity decreased and plasma membrane permeability increased. The expressions of OSA9, a family III H+-ATPase gene, and OSA6 and OSA10, family IV genes, were upregulated, indicating a response of the roots to ketoprofen. Nitrate, ammonium, and free amino acids content decreased with increased ketoprofen. The levels of enzymes involved in N metabolism, namely nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthetase, and glutamate dehydrogenase, also decreased under ketoprofen treatment. Principal component analysis revealed that ketoprofen treatment can significantly affect energy synthesis and nitrogen assimilation in rice roots, while these effects can be alleviated by the antioxidant response. Most of the metabolite contents increased, including amino acids, carbohydrates, and secondary metabolites. Key metabolic pathways, namely substance synthesis and energy metabolism, were found to be disrupted. Microbiome analysis showed that community diversity and richness of rice root microorganisms in solution increased with increasing levels of ketoprofen treatment, and the microbial community structure and metabolic pathways significantly changed. The results of this study provides new insights into the response of rice roots to ketoprofen.

Comparative study of the toxicity mechanisms of quinolone antibiotics on soybean seedlings: Insights from molecular docking and transcriptomic analysis

The ecological effects of quinolone antibiotics (QNs) on non-target organisms have received widespread attention. The toxicological mechanisms of three common QNs, that is, enrofloxacin, levofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin, on soybean seedlings were investigated in this study. Enrofloxacin and levofloxacin caused significant growth inhibition, ultrastructural alterations, photosynthetic suppression, and stimulation of the antioxidant system, with levofloxacin exhibiting the strongest toxic effects. Ciprofloxacin (<1 mg·L-1) did not have a significant effect on the soybean seedlings. As the concentrations of enrofloxacin and levofloxacin increased, antioxidant enzyme activities, malondialdehyde content, and hydrogen peroxide levels also increased. Meanwhile, the chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters decreased, indicating that the plants underwent oxidative stress and photosynthesis was suppressed. The cellular ultrastructure was also disrupted, which was manifested by swollen chloroplasts, increased starch granules, disintegration of plastoglobules, and mitochondrial degradation. The molecular docking results suggested that the QNs have an affinity for soybean target protein receptors (4TOP, 2IUJ, and 1FHF), with levofloxacin having the highest binding energy (-4.97, -3.08, -3.8, respectively). Transcriptomic analysis has shown that genes were upregulated under the enrofloxacin and levofloxacin treatments were mainly involved in ribosome metabolism and processes to synthesize oxidative stress-related proteins. Downregulated genes in the levofloxacin treatment were primarily enriched in photosynthesis-related pathways, indicating that levofloxacin significantly inhibited gene expression for photosynthesis. Genes expression level by quantitative real-time PCR analysis was consistent with the transcriptomic results. This study confirmed the toxic effect of QNs on soybean seedlings, and provided new insights into the environmental risks of antibiotics.

Pharmaceutically active compounds in aqueous environment: recent developments in their fate, occurrence and elimination for efficient water purification

The existence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in the water is a major concern for environmentalists due to their deleterious effects on living organisms even at minuscule concentrations. This review focuses on PhACs such as analgesics and anti-inflammatory compounds, which are massively excreted in urine and account for the majority of pharmaceutical pollution. Furthermore, other PhACs such as anti-epileptics, beta-blockers and antibiotics are discussed because they also contribute significantly to pharmaceutical pollution in the aquatic environment. This review is divided into two parts. In the first part, different classes of PhACs and their fate in the wastewater environment are presented. In the second part, recent advances in the removal of PhACs by conventional wastewater treatment plants, including membrane bioreactors (MBRs), activated carbon adsorption and bench-scale studies concerning a broad range of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) that render practical and appropriate strategies for the complete mineralization and degradation of pharmaceutical drugs, are reviewed. This review indicates that drugs like diclofenac, naproxen, paracetamol and aspirin are removed efficiently by conventional systems. Activated carbon adsorption is suitable for the removal of diclofenac and carbamazepine, whereas AOPs are leading water treatment strategies for the effective removal of reviewed PhACs.

4-Methylbenzylidene camphor triggers estrogenic effects via the brain-liver-gonad axis in zebrafish larvae

4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC), an emerging contaminant, is a widely-used ultraviolet (UV) filter incorporated into cosmetics because it protects the skin from UV rays and counters photo-oxidation. Despite the well-established estrogenic activity of 4-MBC, the link between this activity and its effects on neurobehavior and the liver remains unknown. Thus, we exposed zebrafish larvae to environmentally relevant concentrations of 4-MBC with 1.39, 4.17, 12.5 and 15.4 μg/mL from 3 to 5 days postfertilization. We found that 4-MBC produced an estrogenic effect by intensifying fluorescence in the transgenic zebrafish, which was counteracted by co-exposure with estrogen receptor antagonist. 4-MBC-upregulated estrogen receptor alpha (erα) mRNA, and an interaction between 4-MBC and ERα suggested ERα's involvement in the 4-MBC-induced estrogenic activity. RNA sequencing unearthed 4-MBC-triggered responses in estrogen stimulus and lipid metabolism. Additionally, 4-MBC-induced hypoactivity and behavioral phenotypes were dependent on the estrogen receptor (ER) pathway. This may have been associated with the disruption of acetylcholinesterase and acetylcholine activities. As a result, 4-MBC increased vitellogenin expression and caused lipid accumulation in the liver of zebrafish larvae. Collectively, this is the first study to report 4-MBC-caused estrogenic effects through the brain-liver-gonad axis. It provides novel insight into how 4-MBC perturbs the brain and liver development.

Profiling of the spatiotemporal distribution, risks, and prioritization of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in coastal waters of the northern Yellow Sea, China

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have aroused global concerns due to their ubiquitous occurrence and detrimental effects. The spatiotemporal distributions of 64 PPCPs and their synergetic ecological risks were comprehensively investigated in the seawater of Yantai Bay, and 1 H-benzotriazole (BT), ethenzamide, phenazone, propyphenazone, 4-hydroxybenzophenone and N, N'-diphenylurea were first determined in the seawater of China. Fifty-six PPCPs were detected and their concentrations were 27.5-182 ng/L, with BT contributing around 58.0%. Higher PPCP concentrations were observed in winter and spring, with the concentrations of antioxidants, analgesic/anti-inflammatory drugs and human-used antibiotics significantly higher in winter, while those of aquaculture-used antibiotics and UV filters significantly higher in summer, which was closely related with their usage patterns. Positive correlations were observed for PPCP concentrations between surface and bottom water, except summer, during which time the weak vertical exchange and varied environmental behaviors among different PPCPs resulted in the distinct compositions and concentrations. Terrestrial inputs and mariculture resulted in higher PPCP concentrations in the area located adjacent to the coast and aquaculture bases. The PPCP mixtures posed medium to high risk to crustaceans, and bisphenol A was identified as a high-risk pollutant that needs special attention.

Quantification of pharmaceuticals in hospital effluent: Weighted ranking of environmental risk using a fuzzy hybrid multicriteria method

An analytical method for quantification of seventeen pharmaceuticals and one metabolite was validated and applied in the analysis of hospital effluent samples. Two different sampling strategies were used: seasonal sampling, with 7 samples collected bimonthly; and hourly sampling, with 12 samples collected during 12 h. Thus, the variability was both seasonal and within the same day. High variability was observed in the measured concentrations of the pharmaceuticals and the metabolite. The quantification method, performed using weighted linear regression model, demonstrated results of average concentrations in seasonal samples ranged between 0.19 μgL-1 (carbamazepine) and higher than 61.56 μgL-1 (acetaminophen), while the hourly samples showed average concentrations between 0.07 μgL-1 (diazepam) and higher than 54.91 μgL-1 (acetaminophen). It is described as higher because the maximum concentration of the calibration curve took into account the dilution factor provided by DLLME. The diurnal results showed a trend towards higher concentrations in the first and last hours of sampling. The risk quotient (RQ) was calculated using organisms from three different trophic levels, for all the analytes quantified in the samples. Additionally, in order to understand the level of importance of each RQ, an expert panel was established, with contributions from 23 specialists in the area. The results were analyzed using a hybrid decision-making approach based on a Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method, in order to rank the compounds by environmental risk priority. The compounds of greatest concern were losartan, acetaminophen, 4-aminoantipyrine, sulfamethoxazole, and metoclopramide. Comparison of the environmental risk priority ranking with the potential human health risk was performed by applying the same multicriteria approach, with the prediction of endpoints using in silico (Q)SAR models. The results obtained suggested that sulfamethoxazole and acetaminophen were the most important analytes to be considered for monitoring.

Various species of Basidiomycota fungi reveal different abilities to degrade pharmaceuticals and also different pathways of degradation

The presence of pharmaceuticals (PhACs) in the aquatic environment is an emerging problem worldwide. PhACs reach surface water via the effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). WWTPs, although able to remove organic pollutants, do not always remove PhACs. Currently, in the treatment of sewage with the activated sludge method, numerous microorganisms are used, mostly bacteria. Nevertheless, these microorganisms are not resistant to many drug contaminants, and some may also pose a risk to human health. White-rot fungi (WRF), which degrade a wide spectrum of environmental pollutants, may be used as an alternative to microorganisms. However, little data exists comparing the removal of various PhACs by different WRF. In this study, we aimed to determine the ability of three WRF Basidiomycota species, Armillaria mellea, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, and Pleurotus ostreatus, to remove PhACs from various therapeutic groups over the course of 1 h-4 days. Additionally, we identified the fungal metabolites of PhACs, proposed the degradation pathways, and assessed the toxicity of the post-culture media. All selected WRF removed PhACs, but the degree of removal depended on WRF species and PhACs type. Antidepressants and immunosuppressants were removed most efficiently by P. ostreatus, cardiovascular drugs and sulfamethoxazole by A. mellea, and erythromycin by P. chrysosporium. The vast differences observed highlight the need for more intensive testing of different WRF species to select the best species for removing pharmaceuticals of interest. The structure of metabolites generated during degradation strongly depended on WRF species, but the most frequent xenobiotic transformations were oxidation and dealkylation. The obtained results gave insight into the substrate specificity of selected WRF while also providing a broad extension of the knowledge of pharmaceutical degradation by A. mellea.

Ciona spp. and ascidians as bioindicator organisms for evaluating effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals: A discussion paper

In context of testing, screening and monitoring of endocrine-disrupting (ED) type of environmental pollutants, tunicates could possibly represent a particularly interesting group of bioindicator organisms. These primitive chordates are already important model organisms within developmental and genomics research due to their central position in evolution and close relationship to vertebrates. The solitary ascidians, such as the genus Ciona spp. (vase tunicates), could possibly be extra feasible as ED bioindicators. They have a free-swimming, tadpole-like larval stage that develops extremely quickly (<20 h under favorable conditions), has a short life cycle (typically 2-3 months), are relatively easy to maintain in laboratory culture, have fully sequenced genomes, and transgenic embryos with 3D course data of the embryo ontogeny are available. In this article, we discuss possible roles of Ciona spp. (and other solitary ascidians) as ecotoxicological bioindicator organisms in general but perhaps especially for effect studies of contaminants with presumed endocrine disrupting modes of action.

Priority control sequence of 34 typical pollutants in effluents of Chinese wastewater treatment plants

The identification of the priority control sequence of pollutants in effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has important implications for the management of water quality. This study chose 34 typical pollutants based on their representativeness and detection rates in municipal wastewater. The occurrence frequency and concentration of these pollutants in 168 Chinese WWTP effluents were measured at the national level. The data on in vitro toxicity (67 assays) and in vivo toxicity (216 species) for target pollutants were obtained from the public toxicity database and our experimental data. An environmental health prioritization index (EHPi) method was proposed to integrate the occurrence frequency, concentration, removal rate, and in vitro and in vivo toxicity to determine the priority control sequence of target pollutants. Ethynyl estradiol, 17β-estradiol, estrone, diclofenac, and atrazine were the top 5 pollutants identified by the EHPi score. Several pollutants with high EHPi scores showed spatial differences. Besides the EHPi method which was from the single pollutant perspective, the combined toxicity of pollutants (300 pairs of binary combinations) was also measured based on in vitro toxicity assays to evaluate the key pollutants from the pollutant-pollutant interacting perspective. The pollutants (such as ofloxacin and acetaminophen) that could have significant synergetic effects with many other pollutants are worthy of prior attention. This study shed new light on the identification of the priority control sequence of pollutants in WWTP effluents. The results provide meaningful data for the effective management and control of wastewater water quality.

How could actinobacteria augment the growth and redox homeostasis in barley plants grown in TiO2NPs-contaminated soils? A growth and biochemical study

The increases in titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) released into the environment have raised concerns about their toxicity. However, their phytotoxic impact on plants is not well studied. Therefore, this study aimed at a deeper understanding of the TiO2-NPs phytotoxic impact on barley (Hordeum vulgare) growth and stress defense. We also hypothesized that soil inoculation with bioactive Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 strain can be applied as a biological fertilizer to alleviate TiO2-NPs phytotoxicity. At TiO2-NPs phytotoxicity level, photosynthesis was significantly retarded (∼50% reduction) in TiO2-NPs treated-barley plants which accordingly affect the biomass of barley plants. This retardation was accompanied by a remarkable induction of oxidative damage (H2O2, lipid peroxidation) with a concomitant reduction in the antioxidant defense metabolism. At a glance, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 ameliorated the reduction in growth by enhancing the photosynthetic efficiency in contaminated barley plants. Moreover, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 inoculation reduced the oxidative damage induced by TiO2-NPs via quenching H2O2 production and lipid peroxidation. Regarding the antioxidant defense arsenal, Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 enhanced both enzymatic (e.g. peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), …. etc.) and non-enzymatic (glutathione (GSH), ascorbate (ASC), polyphenols, flavonoids, tocopherols) antioxidants in shoots and to a greater extent roots of barley plants. Moreover, the inoculation significantly enhanced the heavy metal-detoxifying metabolites (eg. phytochelatins, glutaredoxin, thioredoxin, peroxiredoxin) as well as metal-detoxifying enzymes in barley shoots and more apparently in roots of TiO2-NPs stressed plants. Furthermore, there was an organ-specific response to TiO2-NPs and Rhodospirillum sp. JY3. To this end, this study shed light, for the first time, on the molecular bases underlie TiO2-NPs stress mitigating impact of Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 and it introduced Rhodospirillum sp. JY3 as a promising eco-friendly tool in managing environmental risks to maintain agricultural sustainability.

Ecological risks induced by consumption and emission of Pharmaceutical and personal care products in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau: Insights from the polar regions

As the third pole of the world and Asia's water tower, the Tibetan Plateau experiences daily release of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) due to increasing human activity. This study aimed to explore the potential relationship between the concentration and composition of PPCPs and human activity, by assessing the occurrence of PPCPs in areas of typical human activity on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and evaluating their ecological risk. The results indicate that 28 out of 30 substances were detected in concentrations ranging from less than 1 ng/L to hundreds of ng/L, with the average concentration of most PPCPs in the Tibet Autonomous Region being higher than that in Qinghai Province. Among the detected substances, CAF, NOR, CTC, CIP, TCN, OTC, AZN, and DOX accounted for over 90% of the total concentration. The emission sources of PPCPs were identified by analyzing the correlation coefficients of soil and water samples, with excess PPCPs used by livestock breeding discharged directly into soil and then into surface water through leaching or runoff. By comparing the concentration and composition of PPCPs with those in other regions, this study found that CIP, ENR, LOM, NOR, CTC, DOX, OTC, and TCN were the most commonly used PPCPs in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. To assess the ecological risk of PPCPs, organisms at different trophic levels, including algae, crustaceans, fish, and insects, were selected. The prediction of the no effect concentration of each PPCP showed that NOR, CTC, TCN, CAF, and CBZ may have deleterious effects on water biota. This study can assist in identifying the emission characteristics of PPCPs from different types and intensities of human activities, as well as their occurrence and fate during the natural decay of aquatic systems.

Using Hepatic Gene Expression Assays in English Sole (Parophrys vetulus) to Investigate the Effects of Metro Vancouver Wastewater Effluents

The present study has investigated the effects of Metro Vancouver's wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents on English sole (Parophrys vetulus) hepatic gene expression using novel targeted gene expression assays to complement the 2017 Burrard Inlet Ambient Monitoring Program conducted by Metro Vancouver. Seven locations of varying distance to the WWTPs were included. Twelve genes involved in xenobiotic defense (CYP1A, HSP70), thyroid function (DIO1), lipid and glucose metabolism (FABP1, FASN, GLUT2, PPARδ, PPARγ), protein synthesis (18S rRNA, RPS4X), and reproduction (ERα, VTG) revealed several differences between these impacted sites. A key finding of the present study was that males exhibited VTG transcript levels either equivalent or exceeding female levels of this gene at all sites investigated, indicating widespread exposure of estrogenic contaminants throughout Burrard Inlet. Furthermore, the induction of hepatic CYP1A was observed due to possible downstream sites being subjected to a larger influx of certain planar halogenated and non-halogenated hydrocarbons from multiple industrial contributors. This study also revealed significant differences between the sites examined and in genes involved in transcriptional regulation and synthesis of proteins, lipids and glucose metabolism, and thyroid hormone metabolism. Collectively, this study demonstrates the potential of molecular biomarkers of urban contaminant exposure in wild caught English sole for use in diagnosing a broader range of adverse health effects when combined with conventional whole organism health indicators.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Acetaminophen in Aqueous Environments: A Mini Review

Over the past few decades, acetaminophen (ACT), a typical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), has gained global usage, positioning itself as one of the most extensively consumed medications. However, the incomplete metabolism of ACT leads to a substantial discharge into the environment, classifying it as an environmental contaminant with detrimental effects on non-target organisms. Various wastewater treatment technologies have been developed for ACT removal to mitigate its potential environmental risk. Particularly, photocatalytic technology has garnered significant attention as it exhibits high efficiency in oxidizing and degrading a wide range of organic pollutants. This comprehensive review aims to systematically examine and discuss the application of photocatalytic technology for the removal of ACT from aqueous environments. Additionally, the study provides a detailed overview of the limitations associated with the photocatalytic degradation of ACT in practical applications, along with effective strategies to address these challenges.

Chemical prioritization of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in an urban tributary of the Potomac River

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are incredibly diverse in terms of chemical structures, physicochemical properties, and modes of action, making their environmental impacts challenging to assess. New chemical prioritization methodologies have emerged that compare contaminant monitoring concentrations to multiple toxicity data sources, including whole organism and high-throughput data, to develop a list of "high priority" chemicals requiring further study. We applied such an approach to assess PPCPs in Hunting Creek, an urban tributary of the Potomac River near Washington, DC, which has experienced extensive human population growth. We estimated potential risks of 99 PPCPs from surface water and sediment collected upstream and downstream of a major wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), nearby combined sewer overflows (CSO), and in the adjacent Potomac River. The greatest potential risks to the aquatic ecosystem occurred near WWTP and CSO outfalls, but risk levels rapidly dropped below thresholds of concern - established by previous chemical prioritization studies - in the Potomac mainstem. These results suggest that urban tributaries, rather than larger rivers, are important to monitor because their lower or intermittent flow may not adequately dilute contaminants of concern. Common psychotropics, such as fluoxetine and venlafaxine, presented the highest potential risks, with toxicity quotients often > 10 in surface water and > 1000 in sediment, indicating the need for further field studies. Several ubiquitous chemicals such as caffeine and carbamazepine also exceeded thresholds of concern throughout our study area and point to specific neurotoxic and endocrine modes of action that warrant further investigation. Since many "high priority" chemicals in our analysis have also triggered concerns in other areas around the world, better coordination is needed among environmental monitoring programs to improve global chemical prioritization efforts.

Environmental behaviors of emerging contaminants in freshwater ecosystem dominated by submerged plants: A review

Persistent exposure of emerging contaminants (ECs) in freshwater ecosystem has initiated intense global concerns. Freshwater ecosystem dominated by submerged plants (SP-FES) has been widely constructed to control eutrophic water. However, the environmental behaviors (e.g. migration, transformation, and degradation) of ECs in SP-FES have rarely been concerned and summarized. This review briefly introduced the sources of ECs, the pathways of ECs entering into SP-FES, and the constituent elements of SP-FES. And then the environmental behaviors of dissolved ECs and refractory solid ECs in SP-FES were comprehensively summarized, and the feasibility of removing ECs from SP-FES was critically evaluated. Finally, the challenges and perspectives on the future development for ECs removal from SP-FES were prospected, giving possible research gaps and key directions. This review will provide theoretical and technical support for the effective removal of ECs in freshwater ecosystem, especially in SP-FES.

Preparation and application of Ag plasmon Bi3O4Cl photocatalyst for removal of emerging contaminants under visible light

Photocatalytic degradation has been extensively investigated toward the removal emerging contaminants (ECs) from water. In this study, a series of Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl plasmon photocatalysts were synthesized through the photo-deposition of metallic Ag on the Bi₃O₄Cl surface. The effects of plasmon modification on the catalytic performance of bismuth oxychlorides were analyzed. Ag addition did not alter the morphology of Bi₃O₄Cl. With the increasing Ag content, the number of oxygen defects on the catalyst surface first increased and then decreased. Moreover, the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag suppressed the recombination of electron-hole pairs, promoting the migration and separation of photocarriers and improving the light absorption efficiency. However, the addition of excessive Ag reduced the number of active sites on the Bi₃O₄Cl surface, hindering the catalytic degradation of pollutants. The optimal Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl photocatalyst (Ag ratio: 0.025; solution pH: 9; dosage: 0.8 g/L) achieved 93.8 and 94.9% removal of ciprofloxacin and tetrabromobisphenol A, respectively. The physicochemical and photoelectric properties of Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl were determined through various characterization techniques. This study demonstrates that introducing metallic Ag alters the electron transfer path of the catalyst, reduces the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, and effectively improves the catalytic efficiency of Bi₃O₄Cl. Furthermore, the pathways of ciprofloxacin degradation products and their biotoxicity were revealed.

Predictive in silico models for aquatic toxicity of cosmetic and personal care additive mixtures

As emerging environmental contaminants, cosmetic and personal care additives (CPCAs) may have less oversight than other consumer products. Their continuous release and pseudopersistence could cause long-term harm to the aquatic environment. Since CPCAs generally exist in the form of mixtures in the environment, prediction and analysis of their mixture toxicity are crucial for ecological risk assessment. In this study, the acute toxicity of five typical CPCA mixtures to Daphnia magna was tested. The combined toxicity of binary mixtures was examined with the traditional concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) model. Overall, the synergistic effect of the five CPCAs may be caused mainly by methylparaben. In addition, reliable approaches for quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model development were explored. Specifically, 18 QSAR models were developed by three dataset partitioning techniques (Kennard-Stone's algorithm division, Euclidean distance based division, and sorted activity based division), two descriptor filtering methods (genetic algorithm and stepwise multiple linear regression) and three regression methods (multiple linear regression, partial least squares and support vector machine). Sixteen equations were applied for the calculation of the mixture descriptors to screen the functional expression of the mixture descriptors with the largest contribution to the mixture toxicity. A new comprehensive parameter that integrates internal and external validation was proposed for QSAR models evaluation. The mixture toxicity is mainly related the 3D distribution of atomic masses and the spatial distribution of the molecule electronic properties. Rigorously validated and externally predictive QSAR models were developed for predicting the toxicity of binary CPCAs mixtures with any ratio, in the applicability domain. The best possible work frame for construction and validation of QSAR models to provide reliable predictions on the mixture toxicity was proposed.

Deciphering the toxicity mechanism of haloquinolines on Chlorella pyrenoidosa using QSAR and metabolomics approaches

The hazardous potential of haloquinolines (HQLs) is becoming an issue of great concern due to its wide and long-term usage in many personal care products. We examined the growth inhibition, structure-activity relationship, and toxicity mechanism of 33 HQLs on Chlorella pyrenoidosa using the 72-h algal growth inhibition assay, three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR), and metabolomics. We found that the IC₅₀ (half maximal inhibitory concentration) values for 33 compounds ranged from 4.52 to > 150 mg·L^-1, most tested compounds were toxic (1 mg·L^-1 < IC₅₀ < 10 mg·L^-1) or harmful (10 mg·L^-1 < IC₅₀ < 100 mg·L^-1) for the aquatic ecosystem. Hydrophobic properties of HQLs dominate their toxicity. Halogen atoms with large volume appear at the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7-positions of the quinoline ring to significantly increase the toxicity. In algal cells, HQLs can block diverse carbohydrates, lipids, and amino acid metabolism pathways, thereby resulting in energy usage, osmotic pressure regulation, membrane integrity, oxidative stress disorder, thus fatally damaging algal cells. Therefore, our results provide insight into the toxicity mechanism and ecological risk of HQLs.

Plasma-microbubble treatment and sustainable agriculture application of diclofenac-contaminated wastewater

The demand for efficient wastewater treatment is becoming increasingly urgent due to the rising threat of pharmaceutical residues in water. As a sustainable advanced oxidation process, cold plasma technology is a promising approach for water treatment. However, the adoption of the technology encounters several challenges, including the low treatment efficiency and the potentially unknown environmental impact. Here, microbubble generation was integrated with cold plasma system to enhance treatment of wastewater contaminated with diclofenac (DCF). The degradation efficiency depended on the discharge voltage, gas flow, initial concentration, and pH value. The best degradation efficiency was 90.9% after 45 min plasma-bubble treatment under the optimum process parameters. The hybrid plasma-bubble system exhibited strongly synergistic performance heralded by up to seven-times higher DCF removal rates than the two systems operated separately. The plasma-bubble treatment remains effective even after addition of SO₄^2-, Cl^-, CO₃^2-, HCO₃^-, and humic acid (HA) as interfering background substances. The contributions of •O₂^-, O₃, •OH, and H₂O₂ reactive species to the DCF degradation process were specified. The synergistic mechanisms for DCF degradation were deduced through the analysis of the degradation intermediates. Further, the plasma-bubble treated water was proven safe and effective to stimulate seed germination and plant growth for sustainable agriculture applications. Overall, these findings provide new insights and a feasible approach with a highly synergistic removal effect for the plasma-enhanced microbubble wastewater treatment, without generating secondary contaminants.

Performance of a Pilot-Scale Continuous Flow Ozone-Based Hospital Wastewater Treatment System

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming a global concern. Recently, research has emerged to evaluate the human and environmental health implications of wastewater from medical facilities and to identify acceptable wastewater treatment methods. In this study, a disinfection wastewater treatment system using an ozone-based continuous flow system was installed in a general hospital located in Japan. The effectiveness of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antimicrobials in mitigating the environmental impact of hospital wastewater was evaluated. Metagenomic analysis was conducted to characterize the microorganisms in the wastewater before and after treatment. The results demonstrated that ozone treatment enables effective inactivation of general gut bacteria, including Bacteroides, Prevotella, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, DNA molecules, and ARGs, as well as antimicrobials. Azithromycin and doxycycline removal rates were >99% immediately after treatment, and levofloxacin and vancomycin removal rates remained between 90% and 97% for approximately one month. Clarithromycin was more readily removed than the other antimicrobials (81-91%), and no clear removal trend was observed for ampicillin. Our findings provide a better understanding of the environmental management of hospital wastewater and enhance the effectiveness of disinfection wastewater treatment systems at medical facilities for mitigating the discharge of pollutants into aquatic environments.
