Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS A decline in appetite is associated with poor health in older adults (≥65 years). Subjective methods of appetite assessment used in older adults living in the community have not previously been fully documented and their validity and reliability have not been evaluated and described. The aims of this scoping review were to identify methods used to assess self-reported/subjective appetite as a primary outcome in studies in older adults living in the community and community settings, and to establish which, and how methods were evaluated for validity and/or reliability. METHODS A scoping review of three online databases: CINAHL, PubMed and Embase was undertaken. RESULTS One-hundred and one articles were included, with 30 different types of appetite assessment methods identified and categorized into three groups: Likert-scales, visual analogue scales (VAS) and question-based methods. Likert-scales were used most frequently (61 %), followed by VAS (23 %) and question-based methods. Twenty-two studies evaluated the validity and/or reliability of 11 types of appetite assessment methods (Likert-scales, n = 10, VAS, n = 1). Thirty comparators were used to evaluate validity and reliability, with predictive validity and internal consistency reliability evaluated most frequently. Likert-scales were predominantly reported to predict health risks; however, have not been validated for appetite per se. In contrast, albeit limited, VAS have been validated against ad libitum test meal energy intake. CONCLUSIONS Agreement on best practice when evaluating the validity and reliability of assessment methods is required. Given the current evidence, a recommended method will likely depend on the context and goals of assessment.

Abstract
Time-Restricted Eating (TRE) is an intermittent fasting approach that holds promise in managing obesity and appears to influence hunger. We hypothesized that the effects of TRE would be due to a lower caloric intake imposed, as with any other type of dietary intervention. However, it remains unclear whether these effects are attributed to the chrononutrition protocol itself or the caloric restriction resulting from the intervention. Our primary aim was to examine the impact of TRE on hunger compared to isocaloric strategies in adults with overweight or obesity. We conducted a systematic review of randomized clinical trials, with inclusion criteria comprising adults aged 18 years and older with overweight/obesity. A literature search was conducted from the earliest available article up to January 2025, with no restrictions on time, region, or language. The search encompassed major electronic databases, including CENTRAL, MEDLINE, LILACS, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and OpenGrey. Of the 14 studies included, four met the eligibility criteria for the primary meta-analysis, which evaluated hunger in 323 participants. The findings revealed that TRE resulted in an increase in hunger (MD 2.05, 95% CI 1.46, 2.64; I² = 0%) compared to the isocaloric control group. In conclusion, the TRE protocol was associated with elevated hunger compared to isocaloric strategies, which may warrant further investigation into its long-term feasibility in weight loss programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare acute effects of continuous moderate-intensity exercise (CME) and low-volume high-intensity interval exercise (LV-HIIE) on appetite responses between South Asians and white Europeans with non-diabetic hyperglycaemia. METHODS Thirteen white Europeans and 10 South Asians (age 50-74 years) completed three, 5-h experimental conditions (CME, LV-HIIE, control) in randomised sequences. Standardised meals were provided at 0 and 3 h. Exercise involved a 25-min LV-HIIE or 35-min CME bout that ended at 2 h. Subjective appetite perceptions and appetite-related hormones (glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), peptide YY (PYY), acylated ghrelin (AG)) were measured at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 3.5, 4 and 5 h. Time-averaged total area under the curve (TAUC; 1-5 h) was analysed, adjusted for age, sex, and pre-intervention time-averaged TAUC (0-1 h). RESULTS Total GLP-1 was higher in LV-HIIE (mean difference [95% CI] 4.3 [1.5, 7.1] pmol/L h) and CME (4.5 [1.4, 7.7] pmol/L h) versus control (condition effect P = 0.01), but exercise had no effect on the other outcomes in the whole study population (P ≥ 0.28). Appetite responses to exercise were similar between ethnicities for total GLP-1 and total PYY (interaction P ≥ 0.11), but subtle differences emerged for AG and overall appetite (interaction P ≤ 0.02). AG was higher and overall appetite lower in LV-HIIE versus CME in South Asians whilst overall appetite was higher in LV-HIIE versus CME in white Europeans, but neither exercise bout was different to control. DISCUSSION Single LV-HIIE and CME bouts increased total GLP-1 in individuals with non-diabetic hyperglycaemia, but exercise-related appetite responses were not strongly modulated by exercise intensity or ethnicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Though evidence is limited, animal products like pork sausages and cheese may affect satiety differently due to their distinct protein, fat, and calcium content. This study therefore compared their acute effects on breakfast using appetite-related markers. METHODS A total of 11 women and 13 men, with a mean age of 23.0 ± 2.6 years and mean BMI of 24.5 ± 2.6 kg/m2, participated in this crossover design study. Concentrations of active ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), cholecystokinin (CCK), insulin, glucose, leptin, and blood lipids were measured. Subjective feelings of appetite using visual analogue scales were analyzed (0-4 h) as a response to two test breakfasts meals with a similar energy and macronutrient content. Appetite feelings and energy intake from an ad libitum buffet lunch were subsequently measured. Data were analyzed using two different ANOVA methods. RESULTS The pork sausage breakfast was characterized by an earlier triglyceride (TG) peak than the cheese. A slower TG clearance was seen with the cheese breakfast. Ghrelin suppression was longer in the pork sausage breakfast. Active GLP-1 concentration was higher following the cheese breakfast and active GIP declined slower. The two ANOVA methods disagreed regarding the insulin effect. Subjective feelings of hunger before buffet and ad libitum energy intake were higher in males (791 ± 64 kcal) compared with females (344 ± 32 kcal), but did not differ between breakfast types. CONCLUSIONS Acute consumption of pork and cheese of the same energy, fat, and protein content provided detectable differences in appetite-related hormones and lipid responses. Appetite and lipid metabolism were affected by the major differentiators of the test meals, namely calcium, fatty acids and amino acids compositions.

Abstract
AIMS To report the changes in nutritional status, nutrition-related complaints and risk of sarcopenia in individuals attending a primary care dietitian in the Netherlands after a COVID-19 infection. METHODS The study was registered on the clinicaltrials.gov registry (NCT04735744). Nutritional status and nutrition-related complaints were assessed with the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment Short Form and body composition measurements when possible. Risk of sarcopenia was assessed with the Strength, Assistance with walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs and Falls questionnaire. Dietitians reported on treatment goals, content and volume of dietetic treatment. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the study population and outcomes at baseline and end of treatment. For continuous variables, paired samples t-tests were used to compare scores at the start and the end of dietetic treatment. For dichotomous variables. McNemar tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to determine differences between the start and end of treatment. RESULTS A total of 222 participants were included [mean age 50 (SD 13), 58% female, 34% overweight, 40% obese]. Malnutrition risk decreased from 44% (medium risk) and 20% (high risk) to 29% and 12% by the end of treatment (p < 0.001). The risk of sarcopenia decreased from 31% to 22% (p < 0.001). There was an imbalance between fat-free mass and fat mass in about half of the participants. The most commonly reported nutrition-related complaints were fatigue, no appetite, the feeling of being full and changed or loss of taste. Median treatment duration was 21 weeks [interquartile range (IQR) 13-26] and 5 consultations (IQR 4-7). Most participants (46%) aimed to maintain weight, with others aiming to lose (14%) or gain (14%) weight. At the end of treatment, 57% had achieved the goals. CONCLUSIONS Significant improvements in nutritional status and risk of sarcopenia were observed after dietetic treatment in primary care, and most participants achieved the treatment goals. Nevertheless, nutrition-related complaints and the risk of malnutrition or sarcopenia remained prevalent.

Abstract
Poor appetite is an important health concern in older adults. Numerous methods exist for appetite assessment, without a consensual gold standard. This study aims to compare Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire (SNAQ) and two single-item appetite questions with appetite ratings from visual analogue scales (VAS) and energy intake (EI). In 126 community-dwelling adults aged ≥65 years from the APPETITE trial, appetite was assessed using SNAQ, SNAQ 1st item, Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D) 2nd item and using VAS appetite ratings (fasting, 0, 30, 60, 120, 180 min post-breakfast, post-lunch) and EI (ad libitum lunch) in a test meal setting. Spearman correlations were calculated between SNAQ, single-items, VAS-fasting, and EI. Differences in VAS-fasting and EI between normal and poor appetite groups (based on SNAQ, single-items) were examined using Mann-Whitney-U-test. Repeated measures Generalized Linear Models were used to compare all VAS ratings across the test morning and post-breakfast response ratings with VAS-fasting as a covariate between appetite groups. SNAQ score was correlated with VAS-fasting (r = 0.26, p < 0.001) and EI (r = 0.22, p < 0.05). VAS-fasting was lower in the SNAQ-based poor appetite group (p = 0.01). Time/group interaction effects (SNAQ, ηp2 = 0.02; CES-D-item, ηp2 = 0.02) for all VAS ratings, and group (SNAQ-item, ηp2 = 0.04) and interaction effects (CES-D-item, ηp2 = 0.03) for post-breakfast ratings were observed (p < 0.05, respectively). SNAQ identified differences in VAS-fasting, possibly reflecting processes related to the drive to eat, while the two single-items identified appetite differences in response to a standardised breakfast. Different methods appear to capture different aspects of appetite, which should be considered when choosing an assessment method.

Abstract
Low-carbohydrate diets and intermittent energy restriction may offer metabolic advantages in fuel utilisation, that are independent of weight loss. The underlying mechanisms for these effects are unclear but may involve extensions of the catabolic phase and/or attenuation of insulin secretion. To address this gap, we aimed to investigate the independent acute metabolic effect of carbohydrate restriction at varying energy levels. Twelve, (six female) healthy overweight/obese participants (27.3 ± 1.8 years; 25.2 ± 1.6 kg/m2) completed this three-way study. Volunteers followed three diets for one day (36 h, covering the intervention day and overnight fasting), separated by 5-day washout: a normal carbohydrate, energy-balanced diet (nEB, 55% CHO), a low-carbohydrate, energy-balanced diet (LCEB, 50 g/day CHO), and a low-carbohydrate, energy-restricted diet (LC25, 50 g/day CHO with 75% energy restriction). Fasting and serial postprandial (360 min) measurements to a mixed test meal were collected the following morning. Additionally, subjective appetite responses and two-day subsequent ad libitum food intake was assessed. Both low-carbohydrate with and without energy restriction diets induced comparable decrease in triacylglycerol iAUC (p = 0.02, p = 0.04, respectively), and respiratory quotient (both p < 0.01) along with increase in non-esterified fatty acids (both p < 0.01) and 3-hydroxybutyrate (p = 0.001, p = 0.01, respectively) levels. Compared to a non-restricted carbohydrate, energy-balanced diet, postprandial glucose levels significantly increased in the LCEB arm (p = 0.024) and showed a rising trend in the LC25 arm (p = 0.07). Neither insulin responses nor resting, and diet-induced thermogenesis were significantly altered by variations in energy or carbohydrate content. These findings demonstrate that carbohydrate restriction, without altering energy intake, can elicit effects similar to those observed in short-term fasting. As such we propose a strategy of repeated carbohydrate restriction cycles alone may be an emerging alternative approach for the enhancement of cardiometabolic health, warranting further investigation.

Abstract
CONTEXT It has been suggested that thylakoid supplementation could be associated with favorable changes in appetite. However, the present trials are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate whether thylakoid supplementation is effective in hunger/fullness changes. DATA SOURCES A comprehensive literature search was performed before conducting a systematic search in PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Sciences databases up to May 2023. DATA EXTRACTION Of the 262 articles found, 5 articles that measured hunger fullness expressed as ratings on the visual analog scale (VAS) for appetite analyses were selected and thoroughly examined. Relevant information, such as the authors' names, year of publication, country of origin, study design, number and status of participants, intervention dosage and type, study duration, assay used, and key findings, was extracted from these articles. The Jadad scale was used to evaluate the quality of studies. DATA ANALYSIS The data were obtained using STATA version 13 (StataCorp). Effect sizes were reported as weighted mean differences (WMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses were performed to estimate whether the effects of thylakoid supplementation on hunger and fullness varied according to dose, intervention duration, baseline population age and body mass index, baseline hunger and fullness, total sample size, and study quality. Fractional polynomial modeling was carried out to estimate time- and dose-response meta-analysis of the association between thylakoid and satiety and fullness. The meta-analysis also suggests a significant association between the combination of thylakoids with meals and reduced hunger (WMD: -2.415 mm; 95% CI: -3.544, -1.287; P < 0.001) and increased fullness (WMD: +4.602 mm; 95% CI: 2.356, 6.848; P < 0.001). Further analysis showed that thylakoid supplementation with 2 doses of 5 g/day (P = 0.002) and 7.4 g/day (P = 0.021) is more effective in reducing the feeling of hunger during an intervention of less than 56 days (P < 0.001) and with a lower level of hunger (VAS <45 mm, P < 0.001). Furthermore, a significant increase in the perception of fullness was found at a duration of less than 84 days (P < 0.001) and baseline fullness of more than 45 mm (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Supplementation with thylakoid shows favorable effects on reducing hunger and increasing fullness during a shorter intervention duration. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Long-term weight loss outcomes are contrasting between bariatric surgery and dietary restriction alone. This is the first study to investigate changes in gastrointestinal (GI) hormones involved in appetite regulation, and subjective appetite feelings, at 1-year follow-up, after initial weight loss induced by a very-low energy (VLED) alone (controls), or with bariatric surgery. METHODS Patients scheduled for Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) (n = 19) or Roux-en-Y gastric Bypass (RYGB) (n = 19), and controls (n = 16) were recruited. All groups underwent 10 weeks of a VLED (initial phase), followed by a 9-month maintenance phase. Body weight/composition, plasma concentrations of ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), peptide YY (PYY), cholecystokinin (CCK), and appetite ratings were measured before and after a meal, at baseline, week 11(W11), and 1Y follow-up. RESULTS Participants who completed all three follow ups were included in the analysis. Initial changes in body weight/composition were comparable across groups. SG (n = 11) and RYGB (n = 12) continued to lose weight from W11 to 1Y, whereas controls (n = 12) had regained weight. Postprandial GLP-1 increased over time post bariatric surgery and remained unchanged and lower in controls. Postprandial PYY increased in all groups, but greatest post-RYGB. Basal ghrelin decreased over time post-SG, while a small or marked increase was seen after RYGB and diet, respectively, with the control group exhibiting the greatest basal and postprandial concentrations at 1Y. A reduction in basal and postprandial CCK was seen in controls at 1Y, while no changes were observed post-bariatric surgery. Overall, small changes in subjective appetite ratings were seen over time. CONCLUSION Weight change at 1Y follow up after SG and RYGB is followed by a GI hormone profile favoring a lower drive to eat and increased satiety. Abstract
BACKGROUND Ketosis seems to attenuate, or prevent, the rise in both ghrelin concentrations and subjective hunger ratings that follow weight loss. However, most of the previous studies have employed very-low energy diets (VLED) and are therefore limited in terms of generalizability. OBJECTIVES To compare changes in ghrelin plasma concentrations after a low-carbohydrate (LCD) versus an isocaloric low-fat low energy diet (LED) in females with lipedema. Secondary objectives were to determine potential differences between diets in changes in satiety hormones, and subjective ratings of appetite. METHODS Females with obesity and lipedema were randomized to either an LCD (75 g carbohydrates) or low-fat diet (180 g carbohydrates) for 8 weeks. Plasma concentrations of ghrelin, peptide YY, cholecystokinin (CCK), and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), and subjective ratings of appetite were measured in the fasting and postprandial states, pre and post intervention. RESULTS 55 females (30 in LCD) were included (age 47.9 ± 11.3 years, BMI 36.8 ± 5.1 kg/m2). Both LCD and low-fat groups lost weight (10.3 %, P < 0.001 and 7.3 %, P < 0.001, respectively), but the LCD lost significantly more. No within or between groups differences were found for ghrelin in the fasting state. A reduction in postprandial (tAUC) ghrelin was seen only in the LCD group (P = 0.002), and this change was significantly different from the low-fat group (P = 0.046). The LCD group also reported an increase in postprandial (both iAUC and tAUC) fullness ratings (P = 0.035 and P = 0.005, respectively), but this was not significantly different from the low-fat group (P = 0.703 and P = 0.365, respectively), despite the latter experiencing no change (P = 0.127 and P = 0.152, respectively). Conversely, only the low-fat group reported increased hunger in fasting (P = 0.046), but changes were not significantly different from the LCD group (P = 0.711). A decrease in postprandial (both tAUC and iAUC) CCK was observed in both LCD and low-fat diet groups (P ≤ 0.005 for all). CONCLUSION Despite no changes in fasting ghrelin concentrations in either of the diet groups, a reduction in postprandial ghrelin and increased fullness was seen in the LCD group. These favorable changes in appetite in the LCD group might have contributed to the greater weight loss observed in this group. Abstract
BACKGROUND New approaches for the management of obesity, a worldwide problem and a major determinant of disability and mortality, are needed. Mastication influences appetite and satiety mechanisms via actual food or sham feeding. However, the effect of mastication of chewing gum, a type of sham feeding, on appetite regulation has not yet been elucidated. OBJECTIVES Our aim was to evaluate the influence of chewing gum on appetite regulation, satiety, energy intake, and weight loss via randomized controlled Trials. METHODS This study was conducted in accordance with the 2020 PRISMA guidelines, and the protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023432699). Electronic databases MEDLINE®/PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from July 2023 to September 2024. The quality of each included study was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool, RoB 2. RESULTS A total of eight articles with nine RCTs were included in this systematic review. Seven out of nine RCTs evaluated appetite regulation. Five out of seven RCTs reported a significant suppressing effect of hunger, three out of five RCTs reported a significant reduction in desire to eat, and three out of four reported a significant reduction in the desire to eat a sweet snack, all of them compared to the control group. However, the effects on satiety, energy intake, and weight loss are not conclusive. CONCLUSIONS Chewing gum could be a promising non-pharmacological tool for obesity management through appetite regulation; however, further research, with sustained RCTs evaluating the sustained effects of gum chewing on appetite and weight management, is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Appetite is affected by the circadian clock and exhibits diurnal variations. Nevertheless, accurately measuring subjective appetite throughout the day in a free-living setting poses a challenge. This study presents the validation of a novel smartphone application designed to capture, process and analyze circadian appetite fluctuations in a free-living setting. METHODS Twenty-four healthy participants (ages 38.34 ± 3.2 years) completed this randomized crossover study. Participants completed subjective appetite questionnaires every 30 min in a free-living environment, starting from waking hours until bedtime, using visual analog scale (VAS) via the pen and paper (PP) method and the new smartphone application (App). In addition, on two experimental days, separated by a week of washout, participants were provided either a high-energy breakfast (850 kcal) or a low-energy breakfast (250 kcal). Participants completed the appetite questionnaires using both methods every 30 min for 4 h, followed by an ad libitum lunch. RESULTS The high-energy breakfast led to significantly increased fullness sensation and decreased hunger, desire to eat, prospective consumption, and appetite score compared with the low-energy breakfast. There was no significant difference between the methods (PP and App) in all measured parameters under both the free-living environment and the controlled environment. Additionally, Bland-Altman analysis revealed a high degree of agreement between the PP and App methods. Moreover, most participants rated the App as the preferred method regardless of age. CONCLUSIONS Our findings show that the new smartphone application is a valid, reliable tool for measuring subjective appetite, suitable for use in chrononutritional studies conducted in a free-living environment and controlled settings.

Abstract
The prevalence of obesity is increasing worldwide, affecting both children and adults. This obesity epidemic is mostly driven by an increase in energy intake (abundance of highly palatable energy-dense food and drinks) and to a lesser degree a decrease in energy expenditure (sedentary lifestyle). A small proportion of individuals with obesity are affected by genetic forms of obesity, which often relate to mutations in the leptin-melanocortin pathway or are part of syndromes such as the Bardet-Biedl syndrome. These rare forms of obesity have provided valuable insights into the genetic architecture of obesity. Recent advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms that control appetite, hunger, and satiety have led to the development of drugs that can override genetic defects, enabling precision treatment. Leptin deficiency is uniquely treated with recombinant human metreleptin, while those with LEPR, PCSK1, or POMC deficiency can now be treated with the MC4R agonist setmelanotide. This review highlights the most frequent monogenic and syndromic forms of obesity, and the future outlook of precision treatment for these conditions.

Abstract
Food structure modification by increasing viscosity or adding heterogeneity to the food product has shown to effectively change food oral processing. In this study, it was hypothesized that the addition of gas to purees could affect oral processing. This was achieved by creating different structures in purees using a gas syphon, vacuum and syphon + vacuum. The physical properties of the puree (density, flow and mechanical properties) as well as oral processing characteristics, sensory perception and hunger profiles were investigated. Physical measurements showed that the incorporation of gas affected the puree structure as evidenced by a decrease in viscosity, hardness and consistency of the purees. At the oral level, these foamed purees took longer to swallow, which was also reflected in a lower eating rate and slightly lower amount consumed. These changes did not affect hunger or satiety. Therefore, this technique could be beneficial for people who need to eat smaller amounts of food, or for people with swallowing problems, for whom more time in the mouth is recommended without an increase in sensory satiety.

Abstract
Exercise is an essential component of body mass management interventions. Overnight-fasted exercise (FASTex) acutely enhances fat oxidation compared with fed exercise (FEDex). However, consistent FASTex training does not typically further enhance body mass loss, suggesting the induction of energy compensation responses. The present study aimed to test the effects of FASTex or FEDex on the components of energy balance (i.e., energy intake (EI), energy expenditure (EE), and appetite) and interstitial glucose metrics across four days. METHODS Twelve (10 men, 2 women) healthy, physically active participants (age 22.6 + 1.2 years (mean ± SD); BMI 22.5 ± 2.8 kg ⋅ m-2) were studied twice, across four days, after a 75-min run either FASTex or FEDex. Daily EI was obtained after subtracting leftovers from the provided food. Daily fasting appetite was measured by visual analogue scales. Activity- and total- EE (AEE & TEE, respectively) were estimated by combining heart rate and accelerometry. Continuous glucose monitoring was used to capture daily interstitial glucose metrics and Likert scales were utilised to quantify fatigue, stress, sleep quality, and muscle soreness levels. RESULTS No differences between conditions were observed for EI (FASTex = 15.0 ± 0.1 vs FEDex = 15.0 ± 0.4 MJ⋅day-1; p = 0.865), AEE (FASTex = 7.6 ± 1.1 vs FEDex 7.8 ± 1.3 MJ⋅day-1; p = 0.223) and TEE (FASTex = 15.9 ± 3.4 vs 14.9 ± 4.5 MJ⋅day-1; p = 0.136). Additionally, no condition effects for appetite (p > 0.05) and interstitial glucose (p = 0.074) were observed. CONCLUSION FASTex did not differ from FEDex in the response of components of energy balance or interstitial glucose across four days, suggesting that both exercise approaches could be used interchangeably.

Abstract
To investigate the role of appetite-related factors, including interleukin 6 (IL-6), irisin, interleukin 7 (IL-7), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and leptin, on appetite perception in males with obesity. Eleven males (BMI 35.3 ± 4.2 kg/m2, V̇O2peak 29 ± 3.1 mL/kg/min) participated in two experimental trials (MICE: 60 min of cycling at 60% of V̇O2peak; CTRL: 60 min of quiet resting) using a crossover design. Appetite parameters, including IL-6, IL-7, irisin, and leptin, were measured. Additionally, appetite perception was assessed. IL-6 concentration increased significantly immediately post-exercise (95% CI: [2.207-12.192] pg/mL, p = 0.007) and remained elevated 1 hour post-exercise (95% CI: [2.326-11.855] pg/mL, p = 0.006) compared to CTRL. Irisin also rose significantly immediately post-exercise (95% CI: [0.084-3.061] ng/mL, p = 0.039). NPY decreased significantly 1 h post-exercise (95% CI: [(-20.601) - (-1.380)] ng/L, p = 0.027). No significant differences were observed for IL-7 (p = 0.748,η p 2 $$ {\eta}_p^2 $$ = 0.077) and leptin (p = 0.285,η p 2 = 0.061 $$ {\eta}_p^2=0.061 $$ ). Appetite perceptions were suppressed immediately post-exercise (95% CI: [3.407-19.547] mm, p = 0.008) compared to CTRL. Sixty minutes of MICE increased IL-6 and irisin concentrations while suppressed NPY and appetite perceptions in males with obesity.

Abstract
The potential mechanisms involved in lactate's role in exercise-induced appetite suppression require further examination. We used sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) supplementation in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized crossover design to explore lactate's role on neuropeptide Y (NPY), agouti-related peptide (AgRP), and alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) concentrations. Twelve adults (7 males; 24.2 ± 3.4 kg·m-2; 42.18 ± 8.56 mL·kg-1·min-1) completed two identical high-intensity interval training sessions following ingestion of NaHCO3 (BICARB) or sodium chloride (PLACEBO) pre-exercise. Blood lactate, acylated ghrelin, NPY, AgRP, α-MSH, and appetite perceptions were measured pre-exercise, 0-, 30-, 60-, and 90-min postexercise. Free-living energy intake (electronic food diaries) was measured the day before, of, and after each experimental session. In BICARB, blood lactate was greater postexercise (P < 0.002, d > 0.70), though acylated ghrelin was similar (P = 0.075, [Formula: see text] = 0.206) at all time points postexercise (P > 0.034, d < 0.22). NPY (P = 0.006, [Formula: see text] > 0.509) and AgRP (P < 0.001, [Formula: see text] > 0.488) had main effects of time increasing following exercise and returning to baseline, with no differences between sessions (NPY: P = 0.0.192, [Formula: see text] = 0.149; AgRP: P = 0.422, [Formula: see text] = 0.060). α-MSH had no main effect of time (P = 0.573, [Formula: see text] = 0.063) or session (P = 0.269, [Formula: see text] = 0.110). Appetite perceptions were similar during BICARB and PLACEBO (P = 0.007, d = 0.28), increasing in both sessions postexercise (P < 0.088, d > 0.57). Energy intake had a main effect of day (P = 0.025, [Formula: see text] = 0.825), where the experimental session day was greater than the day before (P = 0.010, d = 0.59) with no other differences between days (P > 0.260, d < 0.38). The lower accumulation of lactate than our previous work did not generate exercise-induced appetite suppression as there were no differences in acylated ghrelin, appetite perceptions, or peripheral concentrations of neuropeptides.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Current evidence supports lactate's role in exercise-induced appetite suppression. Here, we demonstrate a smaller degree of lactate accumulation with sodium bicarbonate ingestion and HIIT than our previous work and no subsequent suppression of acylated ghrelin concentrations, subjective appetite perceptions, or peripheral concentrations of neuropeptides. These results suggest either changes in central appetite-regulating neuropeptides are not reflected peripherally or the smaller magnitude of lactate accumulation did not generate exercise-induced appetite suppression as seen previously.

Abstract
AIMS An assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess the effect of a culturally tailored low-glycaemic index (GI) dietary educational intervention on body mass index and cardiometabolic risks for Chinese people with obesity in Hong Kong. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 166 Chinese adults in Hong Kong with obesity were randomized to the intervention group (n = 83) or the control group (n = 83). The intervention group received the culturally sensitive low-GI dietary educational intervention based on the health belief model, consisting of an educational booklet, one individual interactive educational session, and three follow-up telephone calls. The control group received general advice on a healthy diet, including a pamphlet, one individual education session, and three follow-up telephone calls. Outcome measures included body mass index, cardiometabolic risk factors, dietary intake variables, and sense of satiety. Data collection was conducted at baseline and post-intervention at 12 weeks. A generalized estimating equation model was used to compare the difference in changes in outcome variables between groups. Compared with the control group, the intervention group exhibited a significant reduction in dietary glycaemic load (β = -6.963, P = 0.026) at post-intervention. No significant effects were found on other outcomes. CONCLUSION A 12-week culturally tailored and health belief model-based low-GI dietary educational intervention significantly reduced the dietary glycaemic load and showed the feasibility of the low-GI dietary intervention in Chinese adults in Hong Kong with obesity. A longer intervention period and follow-up might be required to achieve improvements in reducing cardiometabolic risk factors in people with obesity. REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04152213.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The effects of breaking up sitting on gut hormone responses and free-living energy compensatory behaviors are still unclear in people of Asian ethnicity. METHODS Twenty-six Asians including 13 lean individuals (Lean) and 13 individuals with centrally overweight/obesity (OW), aged between 20 and 45 yr, completed a randomized crossover study with either 5.5-h uninterrupted sitting (SIT) or 5.5-h sitting with 2-min walking at 6.4 km·h -1 every 20 min (ACTIVE) in the laboratory. Blood samples were collected at regular time points to examine postprandial glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), peptide YY (PYY), and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) concentrations. Free-living physical activity and energy intake were recorded using wearable devices and weighed food diaries outside the laboratory until midnight. Paired t -tests were conducted to compare responses between trials. RESULTS Postprandial GLP-1 and PYY incremental area under the curve values were higher in the ACTIVE trial versus SIT in both Lean and OW groups (all, P < 0.05), but there was no difference in GIP in either group (both, P > 0.05). There were no differences in free-living physical activity (volume and intensity) or energy intake (total and macronutrients) between trials in either group (all, P > 0.05), resulting in greater total physical activity over the 24-h monitoring period in ACTIVE trial versus SIT trial (both, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Breaking up sitting increases postprandial GLP-1 and PYY concentrations in Asians, but does not induce subsequent behavioral compensation, resulting in greater 24-h physical activity levels and lower relative energy intake, in inactive individuals irrespective of bodyweight status.

Abstract
AIM Liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2) dynamics in human plasma and its association with feeding behaviour remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study aims: (a) to investigate fasting LEAP2 in participants with normal weight or with overweight or mild obesity (OW/OB); (b) to study the association between fasting LEAP2 and anthropometric and metabolic traits, feeding behaviour, LEAP2 genetic variants and blood cell DNA methylation status; and (c) to ascertain postprandial changes in LEAP2 after high protein intake and the association with feeding behaviour and food intake. METHODS Anthropometric and behavioural measures, genotyping, methylation profiling, plasma glucose and LEAP2 concentrations were assessed in 327 females and males. A subgroup of 123 participants received an ad libitum high-protein meal, and postprandial LEAP2 concentration and behavioural measures were assessed. RESULTS LEAP2 concentration was higher in participants with OW/OB (p < 0.001) and in females (p < 0.001), and was associated with LEAP2 single nucleotide polymorphisms rs765760 (p = 0.012) and rs803223 (p = 0.019), but not with LEAP2 methylation status. LEAP2 concentration was directly related to glycaemia (p = 0.001) and fullness (p = 0.003) in participants with normal weight, whereas it was associated with body mass index (p = 0.018), waist circumference (p = 0.014) and motor impulsivity in participants with OW/OB (p = 0.005). A negative association with reward responsiveness was observed in participants with OW/OB (p = 0.023). LEAP2 concentration was inversely associated with food intake (p = 0.034) and decreased after a high-protein meal (p < 0.001), particularly in women (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION Increased LEAP2 in participants with OW/OB is associated with behavioural characteristics of obesity. Our results show sexual dimorphism in LEAP2 concentration before and after food intake and highlight the role of LEAP2 in feeding regulation.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effects of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on appetite control parameters, appetite perceptions, and energy intake in sedentary males with obesity. Design Eleven males with obesity (body fat percentage 36.5 ± 2.5%, body mass index 35.3 ± 4.2 kg/m2, V̇O2peak 29 ± 3.1 mL·kg-1·min-1) completed two experimental sessions: (1) no exercise (CTRL) and (2) 60 min of moderate-intensity cycling exercise at 60% V̇O2peak (MICT) in a crossover design. Blood analysis included growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15), total ghrelin, peptide tyrosine tyrosine3-36 (PYY3-36), total glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), insulin, and glucose, as well as subjective appetite perceptions were measured in specific intervals. A standard breakfast at 0 h and an ad libitum meal postexercise was provided. Result GDF-15 (95% confidence interval [CI]: [2.48-27.28] ng/L, p = 0.021) increased immediately following MICT compared to CTRL. However, there were no differences for PYY3-36 (p = 0.480,η p 2 = 0.025 ), total ghrelin (p = 0.646,η p 2 = 0.011 ), and total GLP-1 (p = 0.451,η p 2 = 0.029 ) between sessions. Appetite perceptions (95% CI: [(-20.38)-(-6.16)] mm, p = 0.001) were suppressed following MICT though energy intake was not different between the sessions (95% CI: [(-1904.9)-928.1] kJ, p = 0.480). Conclusion Sixty minutes of MICT increased GDF-15 while suppressing appetite perceptions in individuals with obesity. There was no energy compensation postexercise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The aging process is often accompanied by high risk of malnutrition and elevated levels of growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15). GDF15 is an increasingly recognized biomarker for regulation of metabolism, but few studies have investigated the connection between GDF15 and malnutrition in older age and how it relates to other features of aging such as decreased appetite and physical function. Therefore, we investigated the associations between GDF15 levels and nutritional status, appetite, and physical function in acutely admitted older adults. METHODS Plasma GDF15 levels were measured using immunoassays in 302 older adults (≥65 years) admitted to the emergency department (ED). Nutritional status was evaluated with the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form (MNA®-SF), appetite was evaluated with the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire (SNAQ), and physical function was evaluated with handgrip strength (HGS), 30-s chair stand test (30s-RSS), and gait speed (GS). Associations between GDF15 and each outcome was determined by logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, and C-reactive protein (CRP). RESULTS Each doubling in plasma GDF15 level was associated with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval) of 1.59 (1.10-2.29, P = 0.01) for risk of malnutrition compared to normal nutrition and 1.19 (0.85-1.69, P = 0.3)) for malnutrition compared to risk of malnutrition. Each doubling in GDF15 was associated with an adjusted OR of 1.63 (1.21-2.23)) for having poor appetite, 1.46 (1.07-1.99) for having low HGS, 1.74 (1.23-2.51) for having low 30s-RSS, and 1.99 (1.39-2.94) for having low GS. CONCLUSION Among older adults admitted to the ED, higher GDF15 levels were significantly associated with malnutrition, poor appetite, and low physical function independent of age, sex, and CRP.

Abstract
This was a preliminary study that examined whether appetite regulation is altered during the menstrual cycle or with oral contraceptives. Ten naturally cycling females (NON-USERS) and nine tri-phasic oral contraceptive using females (USERS) completed experimental sessions during each menstrual phase (follicular phase: FP; ovulatory phase: OP; luteal phase: LP). Appetite perceptions and blood samples were obtained fasted, 30, 60, and 90 min post-prandial to measure acylated ghrelin, active glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and total peptide tyrosine tyrosine (PYY). Changes were considered important if p < 0.100 and the effect size was ≥medium. There appeared to be a three-way (group x phase x time) interaction for acylated ghrelin where concentrations appeared to be greater in USERS versus NON-USERS during the OP 90-min post-prandial and during the LP fasted, and 90-min post-prandial. In USERS, ghrelin appeared to be greater 90-min post-prandial in the OP versus the FP with no other apparent differences between phases. There were no apparent differences between phases in NON-USERS. There appeared to be a three-way interaction for PYY where concentrations appeared to be greater in USERS during the FP 60-min post-prandial and during the OP 30-min post-prandial. In USERS PYY appeared to be greater 60-min post-prandial during the OP versus the LP with no other apparent differences. There were no apparent differences between phases in NON-USERS. There appeared to be no effect of group or phase on GLP-1, or appetite perceptions. These data demonstrate small effects of menstrual cycle phase and oral contraceptive use on the acylated ghrelin and total PYY response to a standardized meal, with no effects on active GLP-1 or perceived appetite, though more work with a large sample size is necessary.

Abstract
There are many health and nutrition implications of suffering from multimorbidity, which is a huge challenge facing health and social services. This review focuses on malnutrition, one of the nutritional consequences of multimorbidity. Malnutrition can result from the impact of chronic conditions and their management (polypharmacy) on appetite and nutritional intake, leading to an inability to meet nutritional requirements from food. Malnutrition (undernutrition) is prevalent in primary care and costly, the main cause being disease, accentuated by multiple morbidities. Most of the costs arise from the deleterious effects of malnutrition on individual's function, clinical outcome and recovery leading to a substantially greater burden on treatment and health care resources, costing at least £19·6 billion in England. Routine identification of malnutrition with screening should be part of the management of multimorbidity together with practical, effective ways of treating malnutrition that overcome anorexia where relevant. Nutritional interventions that improve nutritional intake have been shown to significantly reduce mortality in individuals with multimorbidities. In addition to food-based interventions, a more 'medicalised' dietary approach using liquid oral nutritional supplements (ONS) can be effective. ONS typically have little impact on appetite, effectively improve energy, protein and micronutrient intakes and may significantly improve functional measures. Reduced treatment burden can result from effective nutritional intervention with improved clinical outcomes (fewer infections, wounds), reducing health care use and costs. With the right investment in nutrition and dietetic resources, appropriate nutritional management plans can be put in place to optimally support the multimorbid patient benefitting the individual and the wider society.

Abstract
It is well known that a large portion of the population elevates their intake of high energy-dense foods during times of stress; however, it is understudied whether stress affects the reinforcing value of a food reward. Further knowledge of this relationship may help us better understand the positive correlation between reinforcing value of food and obesity. Therefore, it was tested if an acute stressor would increase the reinforcing value of low or high energy-dense food. Participants (N = 70) were randomized to a stress or no-stress condition after which they were allowed to work to gain access to a food reward and reading time. To determine if high energy-dense food was specifically affected, half the participants from each stress manipulation were randomly assigned to work for either grapes or chocolate candies. Participants in the stress condition worked less for food access than those in the no-stress condition, for both low and high energy-dense foods, but stress did not affect the reinforcing value of reading time. These results indicate that, contrary to our hypothesis, in a sample of college students, an acute stressor decreased reinforcing value of food, with no difference between a low and high energy-dense food item.

Abstract
Research on exercise-induced appetite suppression often does not include resistance training (RT) exercise and only compared matched volumes. PURPOSE To compare the effects of low-load and high-load RT exercise completed to volitional fatigue on appetite-regulation. METHODS 11 resistance-trained males (24 ± 2 y) completed 3 sessions in a crossover experimental design: 1) control (CTRL); 2) RT exercise at 30% 1-repetition maximum (RM); and 3) RT exercise at 90% 1-RM. RT sessions consisted of 3 sets of 5 exercises completed to volitional fatigue. Acylated ghrelin, active glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), active peptide tyrosine (PYY), lactate, and subjective appetite perceptions were measured pre-exercise, 0-, 60-, and 120-min post-exercise. Energy intake was recorded the day before, of, and after each session. RESULTS Lactate was elevated following both 30% (0-, 60-, 120-min post-exercise) and 90% (0-, 60-min post-exercise; P < 0.001, d > 3.92) versus CTRL, with 30% greater than 90% (0-min post-exercise; P = 0.011, d = 1.14). Acylated ghrelin was suppressed by 30% (P < 0.007, d > 1.22) and 90% (P < 0.028, d > 0.096) post-exercise versus CTRL, and 30% suppressed concentrations versus 90% (60-min post-exercise; P = 0.032, d = 0.95). There was no effect on PYY (P > 0.171, ηp2 <0.149) though GLP-1 was greater at 60-min post-exercise in 90% (P = 0.052, d = 0.86) versus CTRL. Overall appetite was suppressed 0-min post-exercise following 30% and 90% versus CTRL (P < 0.013, d > 1.10) with no other differences (P > 0.279, d < 0.56). There were no differences in energy intake (P > 0.101, ηp2 <0.319). CONCLUSIONS RT at low- and high-loads to volitional fatigue induced appetite suppression coinciding with changes in acylated ghrelin though limited effects on anorexigenic hormones or free-living energy intake were present.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Appetitive sensations (AS) are signals that guide eating behaviors. Marked short-term inter-individual variability in AS has been reported but the long-term stability of individual ratings and their dietary implications are not well characterized. OBJECTIVES This study explored the stability of inter-individual ratings of hunger, fullness and thirst for 17 weeks; determined the relationships between these sensations, eating patterns and energy intake (EI); as well as the associations between ratings and selected individual characteristics (age, gender, BMI). METHODS A 17-week observational study collected hourly appetitive ratings and dietary intake data from 97 (90 completers, 7 partial completers) healthy adults at weeks 1, 9, and 17. RESULTS There were marked and stable inter-individual differences over the 17 weeks for hunger (week 1 vs. week 9, r = 0.72 (p < 0.001); week 1 vs. week 17, r = 0.67 (p < 0.001); week 9 vs. week 17, r = 0.77 (p < 0.001)); fullness (week 1 vs. week 9 r = 0.74 (p < 0.001); week 1 vs. week 17, r = 0.71 (p < 0.001); week 9 vs. week 17, r = 0.81 (p < 0.001)); and thirst (week 1 vs. week 9 r = 0.82 (p < 0.001); week 1 vs. week 17, r = 0.81 (p < 0.001); week 9 vs. week 17, r = 0.88 (p < 0.001)). Cross-correlation functions revealed EI and eating pattern exerted stronger effects on AS than the reverse. However, the absolute effect sizes were small. Path analyses also indicated that there were weak relationships between AS and EI. No robust effects of the studied individual characteristics were observed. CONCLUSION This study found that acute and chronic sensations of hunger, fullness and thirst are relatively stable within individuals but vary markedly between individuals. In addition, the present data indicate AS are poorly associated with dietary patterns or with EI under conditions of relatively stable energy balance.

Abstract
PURPOSE The liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2) is a newly recognized peptide hormone that acts via the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) blunting the effects of ghrelin and displaying ghrelin-independent actions. Since the implications of LEAP2 are beginning to be elucidated, we investigated if plasma LEAP2 concentration varies with feeding status or sex and whether it is associated with glucose metabolism and appetite sensations. METHODS We performed a single test meal study, in which plasma concentrations of LEAP2, ghrelin, insulin and glucose as well as visual analogue scales for hunger, desire to eat, prospective food consumption, fullness were assessed before and 60 min after breakfast in 44 participants (n = 21 females) with normal weight (NW) or overweight/obesity (OW/OB). RESULTS Pre-prandial plasma LEAP2 concentration was ~ 1.6-fold higher whereas ghrelin was ~ 2.0-fold lower in individuals with OW/OB (p < 0.001) independently of sex. After adjusting for body mass index (BMI) and sex, pre-prandial plasma LEAP2 concentration displayed a direct relationship with BMI (β: 0.09; 95%CI: 0.05, 0.13; p < 0.001), fat mass (β: 0.05; 95%CI: 0.01, 0.09; p = 0.010) and glycemia (β: 0.24; 95%CI: 0.05, 0.43; p = 0.021), whereas plasma ghrelin concentration displayed an inverse relationship with BMI and fat mass but not with glycemia. Postprandial plasma LEAP2 concentration increased ~ 58% in females with OW/OB (p = 0.045) but not in females with NW or in males. Pre-prandial plasma LEAP2 concentration displayed an inverse relationship with hunger score (β: - 11.16; 95% CI: - 18.52, - 3.79; p = 0.004), in a BMI-, sex- and ghrelin-independent manner. CONCLUSIONS LEAP2 emerges as a key hormone implicated in the regulation of metabolism and appetite in humans. Abstract
Sleep is hypothesized to interact with weight gain and loss; however, modelling this relationship remains elusive. Poor sleep perpetuates a cascade of cardiovascular and metabolic consequences that may not only increase risk of adiposity, but also confound weight loss efforts. We conducted a scoping review to assess the research on sleep and weight loss interventions. We searched six databases for studies of behavioural weight loss interventions that included assessments of sleep in the general, non-clinical adult human population. Our synthesis focused on dimensions of Population, Intervention, Control, and Outcomes (PICO) to identify research and knowledge gaps. We identified 35 studies that fell into one of four categories: (a) sleep at baseline as a predictor of subsequent weight loss during an intervention, (b) sleep assessments after a history of successful weight loss, (c) concomitant changes in sleep associated with weight loss and (d) experimental manipulation of sleep and resulting weight loss. There was some evidence of improvements in sleep in response to weight-loss interventions; however, randomized controlled trials of weight loss interventions tended not to report improvements in sleep when compared to controls. We conclude that baseline sleep characteristics may predict weight loss in studies of dietary interventions and that sleep does not improve because of weight loss alone. Future studies should enrol large and diverse, normal, overweight and obese short sleepers in trials to assess the efficacy of sleep as a behavioural weight loss treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Limiting body mass loss during military expeditions/training in the cold by providing rations containing easy-to-use, highly palatable, and familiar foods is feasible, but the bulk/weight is too high to be realistically used in a military context. We carried out an analysis of lighter rations adapted to cold weather (1,011 g, 15.7 MJ/3750 kcal) during a 20-day expedition in Greenland. METHODS Ten French soldiers daily reported all foods and beverages consumed, the reasons they did not consume certain foods, the palatability of each consumed food, the timing of intake, and the sensation of hunger using a diary. RESULTS Although energy intake increased in the 3rd week (vs 1st week; p = 0.015), it was insufficient to prevent the loss of body mass (-4.2 ± 1.9 kg, p = 0.002). More extensive analyses showed that 1) energy intake increased only during dinner (p = 0.024) and that hunger levels continued to increase before dinner (p = 0.029), 2) palatability increased during the 3rd week (vs 1st week) especially for savory day foods (p< 0.001), and 3) lack of hunger and lack of appeal (33 % each) were the main reasons for not consuming certain items. CONCLUSION Soldiers placed in total autonomy during a 20-day expedition in the cold and provided rations that were slightly undersized but adapted for cold conditions, surprisingly, remained picky, leading to large losses of body mass. Our results suggest a margin for improvement to stimulate spontaneous food intake. For example, more energy-dense and savory foods during the day and the replacement of certain disliked items.

Abstract
Further research is required to understand hormonal regulation of food intake during pregnancy and its association with energy intake. The objectives are to (i) compare postprandial responses of plasma glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) between trimesters, (ii) compare postprandial appetite sensations between trimesters, and (iii) examine trimester-specific associations between GLP-1 levels, appetite sensations, and usual energy intake. At each trimester, participants (n = 26) consumed a standard test meal following a 12 h fast. Plasma GLP-1 levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method at fasting and at 30, 60, 120, and 180 min postprandial. A visual analogue scale assessing appetite sensations was completed at fasting and at 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 min postprandial. Mean energy intake was assessed using three web-based 24 h dietary recalls at each trimester. Lower postprandial GLP-1 responses were observed in the 2nd (p = 0.004) and 3rd trimesters (p < 0.001) compared to the 1st trimester. Greater postprandial sensations of desire to eat, hunger, and prospective food consumption were noted in the 3rd trimester compared to the 1st trimester (p < 0.04, for all). Fasting GLP-1 was negatively associated with fasting appetite sensations (except fullness) at the 2nd trimester (p < 0.02, for all). Postprandially, significant associations were observed for incremental areas under the curve from 0 to 30 min between GLP-1 and fullness at the 2nd (p = 0.01) and 3rd trimesters (p = 0.03). No associations between fasting or postprandial GLP-1 and usual energy intake were observed. Overall, GLP-1 and appetite sensation responses significantly differ between trimesters, but few associations were observed between GLP-1, appetite sensations, and usual energy intake.

Abstract
Understanding how an intervention impacts appetite in real-life settings and over several days remains a challenging and under-explored research question. To this end, we developed Momentary Appetite Capture (MAC), a form of ecological momentary assessment that combines automated text messaging with an online platform. Participants report their appetite using visual analogue scales (hunger, desire to eat, and fullness) and a virtual portion-size selection task. In two separate studies, we assessed the feasibility and test-retest reliability of MAC. Participants were prompted every 2 hours over a 14-hour window, and they repeated this assessment over two consecutive weekdays. For each participant, we calculated a daily time-averaged area under the curve (AUC) for each appetite measure. In Study One (N = 25) time-averaged AUC was significantly positively correlated across test days for hunger (r = 0.563, p = .003), desire to eat (r = 0.515, p = .008) and prospective portion size (r = 0.914, p < .001), but not for fullness (r = 0.342, p = .094). Participants completed 95% of MACs (380 of 400), and we used participant feedback to improve the MAC tool and study protocol for Study Two. In Study Two (N = 31), 94% of MACs were completed (468 of 496). Across days, time-averaged AUC was significantly positively correlated for hunger (r = 0.595, p = < .001), fullness (r = 0.501, p = .004), desire to eat (r = 0.585, p < .001), and prospective portion size (r = 0.757, p < .001). Together, these studies suggest that MAC could be an acceptable and reliable tool to track appetite throughout the day. In the future, MAC could be used to explore the impact of weight-loss interventions on natural fluctuations in appetite.

Abstract
PURPOSE Bariatric surgery remains the most efficient treatment to achieve a sustained weight loss. However, a large proportion of patients experience suboptimal weight loss (SWL). The exact mechanisms involved remain to be fully elucidated, but the homeostatic appetite control system seems to be involved. The aim of this study was, therefore, to compare the plasma concentration of gastrointestinal hormones, and appetite ratings, between those experiencing SWL and optimal weight loss (OWL) after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty participants from the Bariatric Surgery Observation Study (BAROBS) experiencing either SWL or OWL (< or ≥ 50% of excess weight loss (EWL), respectively) > 13 years post-RYGB were compared to 25 non-surgical controls. Plasma concentrations of acylated ghrelin (AG), total glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), total peptide YY (PYY), cholecystokinin (CCK), and subjective ratings of hunger, fullness, desire to eat (DTE), and prospective food consumption (PFC) were assessed in the fasting and postprandial (area under the curve (AUC)) states. RESULTS Those experiencing OWL presented with higher basal AG and GLP-1 iAUC, and lower AG iAUC compared with SWL and controls. Additionally, both bariatric groups presented with higher PYY and CCK iAUC compared to controls. PFC tAUC was also lower in OWL compared to the SWL group. Total weight loss was positively correlated with GLP-1 tAUC and negatively correlated with fasting and tAUC DTE and PFC tAUC. CONCLUSIONS SWL > 13 years post-RYGB is associated with lower basal ghrelin, as well as a weaker satiety response to a meal. Future studies should investigate the causality of these associations.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effects of the specially designed nudging tableware, including a plate and bowl, on individual food choices in normal-weight young adults and preliminarily explore its mechanisms. We hypothesized that the toolset could increase the choice of vegetables and decrease that of rice. METHODS A randomized, single-blind, two-period crossover trial was carried out among 40 normal-weight university students in China. All subjects completed two buffets separated by an interval of one week, wearing the eye tracker. Vegetable choice, evaluated through the proportion of vegetables, was the primary outcome, and the weight of vegetables and rice were the secondary outcomes. The mechanisms of the decision-making process were preliminarily explored through eye tracking. RESULTS The usage of the nudging tableware significantly increased the proportion of vegetables and decreased the amount of rice taken (P<0.05), while insignificantly increased the weight of vegetables (P = 0.079). Eye tracking shows that the nudging plate significantly prolonged the food-choosing process and fixation duration on vegetables (P<0.05), and the latter was positively correlated to the increased quantity of vegetables while using the nudging plate (r = 0.493, P<0.01). CONCLUSION The specially designed nudging tableware might be an effective and practical tool to promote the choice of less rice and more vegetables. Mechanisms behind this change might include automatic and unconscious processes with the inconspicuously smaller capacity of the bowl and larger portion size of the vegetable segment, and increased attention triggered by the vegetable patterns and larger green underpainting.

Abstract
Background N-lactoylphenylalanine (Lac-Phe) is a new form of "exerkines" closely related to lactate (La), which may be able to inhibit appetite. Blood flow restriction (BFR) can lead to local tissue hypoxia and increase lactate accumulation. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of combining Moderate-intensity Continuous Exercise (MICE) with BFR on Lac-Phe and appetite regulation in obese adults. Methods This study employed the cross-design study and recruited 14 obese adults aged 18-24 years. The participants were randomly divided into three groups and performed several tests with specific experimental conditions: (1) M group (MICE without BFR, 60%VO2max, 200 kJ); (2) B group (MICE with BFR, 60%VO2max, 200 kJ); and (3) C group (control session without exercise). Participants were given a standardized meal 60 min before exercise and a ad libitum 60 min after exercise. In addition, blood and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were collected before, immediately after, and 1 hour after performing the exercise. Results No significant difference in each index was detected before exercise. After exercise, the primary differential metabolites detected in the M and B groups were xanthine, La, succinate, Lac-Phe, citrate, urocanic acid, and myristic acid. Apart from that, the major enrichment pathways include the citrate cycle, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism. The enhanced Lac-Phe and La level in the B group was higher than M and C groups. Hunger of the B group immediately after exercise substantially differed from M group. The total ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide-1 and hunger in the B group 1 hour after exercise differed substantially from M group. The results of calorie intake showed no significant difference among the indexes in each group. Conclusions In conclusion, this cross-design study demonstrated that the combined MICE and BFR exercise reduced the appetite of obese adults by promoting the secretion of Lac-Phe and ghrelin. However, the exercise did not considerably affect the subsequent ad libitum intake.

Abstract
Individualised management of obesity remains challenging and, to date, most treatment is based on clinical judgement. This study aimed to develop and validate a novel questionnaire-based tool to identify three pre-defined eating behavior (EB) traits, emotional eating, reduced satiety (constant hunger) and reduced satiation (feasters) that may predict selective medication response given their targeted actions. We recruited 977 individuals from a tertiary academic diabetes clinic to participate in this two-phase validation study. Participants self-reported weight management activities and were asked to self-assess their EB characteristics. The initial questionnaire included 42 visual analogue scale questions. In Phase I, 729 participants completed the questionnaire, including Māori (11.8%) and Pacific peoples (19.3%). After random division of the study sample, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) confirmed a three-factor model as the best fit. Stepwise removal of items with inadequate factor loading retained 27 of 42 items, which accounted for 96% of the variance. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), performed on the second half of the sample, demonstrated good model fit with the final 27-item questionnaire. Internal consistency was high for factor (α = 0.82-0.95) and demographic subgroups, and similar to those obtained in the EFA. Test-retest reliability in a subset of 399 participants who repeated the questionnaire after a four-week interval (Phase II) showed moderate to good reliability. Participants classified into one of three EB types based on the highest median score among the factors. Test-retest reliability was robust for emotional eaters (71.25%) and constant hunger (68.9%). The correlation between aggregate EB score (sum of three EB scores) and BMI was significant (Spearman rho = 0.314, P = .0005). The questionnaire reliably identified three distinct EB traits, which may be informative for precision medicine applications for obesity management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Weight loss is associated with a disproportionate reduction in energy expenditure, along with increases in hunger feelings and ghrelin concentrations. These changes are presumed to be homeostatic mechanisms to counteract the energy deficit. The possibility that these 2 components of the energy balance equation are mechanistically linked has never been examined. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine if the disproportionate reduction in resting metabolic rate (RMR) seen with weight loss is associated with changes in the plasma concentration of gastrointestinal hormones involved in appetite regulation and subjective appetite ratings. METHODS This was a longitudinal study with repeated measurements. Fifty-six individuals with obesity (body mass index [BMI]: 34.5±0.5 kg/m2; age: 47±1 y; 26 males) underwent an 8 wk low-energy diet, followed by 4 wk of refeeding and weight stabilization. The RMR, respiratory quotient (RQ), body composition, plasma concentrations of ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide 1, peptide YY, cholecystokinin, insulin, and appetite ratings in the fasting and postprandial states were measured at baseline, Wk9 and 13. Metabolic adaptation was defined as significantly lower when measured versus the predicted RMR (pRMR) (from own regression model using baseline data). RESULTS A 14.2±0.6 kg weight loss was seen at Wk9 and maintained at Wk13. RQ was significantly reduced at Wk9 (0.82±0.06 vs. 0.76±0.05, P< 0.001) but returned to baseline at Wk13. Metabolic adaptation was seen at Wk9, but not Wk13 (-341±58, P <0.001 and -75±72 kJ/d, P = 0.305, respectively). The larger the difference between measured and predicted RMR at both timepoints, the greater the increase in hunger, desire to eat, and composite appetite score (fasting and postprandial at Wk9, postprandial only at Wk13), even after adjusting for weight loss and RQ. CONCLUSION A larger metabolic adaptation during weight loss is accompanied by a greater drive to eat. This might help explain the interindividual differences in weight loss outcomes to dietary interventions.

Abstract
The effectiveness of exercise to reduce body mass is typically modest, partially due to energy compensation responses which may be linked to energy substrate availability around exercise. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of manipulating post-exercise energy substrate availability (high carbohydrate/low fat [HCLF] or low carbohydrate/high fat [LCHF] energy replacement) on energy balance components in the short-term (i.e., appetite, energy intake (EI) and energy expenditure (EE)). METHODS Appetite, EI, activity- and total- EE were measured in twelve healthy, young (21.0 ± 2.3 years) physically active participants (10 men, 2 women) on two occasions across 4 days after a 75-min run and an isocaloric energy replacement drink (HCLF and LCHF). Appetite was measured daily by visual analogue scales, EI was calculated by subtracting the energy content of food leftovers from a provided food package, activity- and total- EE determined by heart-rate accelerometery. RESULTS Composite appetite ratings between days were lower in HCLF (62.4 ± 12) compared to LCHF (68.3 ± 8.9 mm; p = 0.048). No differences between conditions were detected for EI. Cumulative activity-EE (HCLF= 20.9 ± 3.7, LCHF= 16.9 ± 3.1 MJ; p = 0.037), but not total-EE (HCLF= 44.6 ± 7.7, LCHF= 39.9 ± 4.7 MJ; p = 0.060), was higher for the HCLF condition than the LCHF across the measurement period. CONCLUSION Compared with low carbohydrate/high fat, immediate post-exercise energy replacement with a high carbohydrate/low fat drink resulted in higher short-term activity energy expenditure and lower appetite ratings.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Protein leverage (PL) is the phenomenon whereby a dominant appetite for protein drives overconsumption of energy with a decline in the ratio of protein to fat and carbohydrate in the diet. PL has been independently verified in several randomized control trials, and its predictions are supported by diet surveillance data. Our aim in the present study was to test whether surgical intervention through gastric bypass will ameliorate the PL effect. METHODS Ten patients with gastric bypass (2-5 years postsurgical time) were given ad libitum access to study food comprising 10%, 15%, or 25% protein and no access to other foods for 3 days while controlling food palatability and variety. Food intake was measured, and energy and nutrient intakes were calculated. Body weight, blood chemistry, lipid profile, hormones (insulin, leptin, and ghrelin), and creatinine were determined before and after each experimental period. RESULTS The gastric bypass patients in our study did not show evidence for protein intake regulation as predicted under PL but ate to constant total energy intake on the 10%, 15%, and 25% protein diets with protein intake varying significantly. Patients lost weight in the three study periods, but significant weight loss was observed only on the 15% protein diet. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that gastric bypass might disengage the PL mechanism, thus ameliorating an appetite-specific mechanism that drives energy overconsumption in modern food environments.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the hypothesis that weight loss with the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) liraglutide alone would lead to a greater reduction in the proportion of fat to lean tissue mass when compared to caloric restriction (CR) alone, as well as when compared to treatment with sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, that also enhances GLP-1 activity - to determine the independent effects of each treatment. METHODS A total of 88 adults with obesity and prediabetes were randomized to 14 weeks of intervention with CR (-390 kcal/d), liraglutide (1.8 mg/d), or the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor sitagliptin (100 mg/d) as a weight-neutral comparator. Changes between groups in appetite and hunger ratings measured via visual analogue scales, dietary intakes, body weight, body composition via dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, and resting energy expenditure via indirect calorimetry were assessed using the Kruskal-Wallis test or Pearson's chi-squared test. RESULTS Weight loss ≥5% of baseline body weight occurred in 44% of participants in the CR group, 22% of the liraglutide group and 5% of the sitagliptin group (p = 0.02). The ratio of fat to lean mass decreased by 6.5% in the CR group, 2.2% in the liraglutide group, and 0% in the sitagliptin group (p = 0.02). Visceral fat reduced by 9.5% in the CR group, 4.8% in the liraglutide group, and 0% in the sitagliptin group (p = 0.04). A spontaneous reduction in dietary simple carbohydrates in the CR group was associated with improved homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance score (HOMA-IR). CONCLUSIONS Although both liraglutide and CR are valuable strategies for cardiometabolic risk reduction, CR was associated with greater weight loss and more favourable improvements in body composition than treatment with liraglutide alone. Differences in the response to each of these interventions enables patients to be stratified to the most optimal intervention for their personal risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity with metabolic syndrome is highly prevalent and shortens lifespan. OBJECTIVES In a dose-finding crossover study, we evaluated the effect of glycomacropeptide (GMP) on satiety, glucose homeostasis, amino acid concentrations, inflammation, and the fecal microbiome in 13 obese women. METHODS Eligible women were ≤10 yr past menopause with a body mass index [BMI (in kg/m2)] of 28 to 35 and no underlying inflammatory condition affecting study outcomes. Participants consumed GMP supplements (15 g GMP + 10 g whey protein) twice daily for 1 wk and thrice daily for 1 wk, with a washout period between the 2 wk. Women completed a meal tolerance test (MTT) on day 1 (soy MTT) and day 7 (GMP MTT) of each week. During each test, subjects underwent measures of glucose homeostasis, satiety, cytokines, and the fecal microbiome compared with that of usual diet, and rated the acceptability of consuming GMP supplements. RESULTS The mean ± SE age of the 13 women was 57 ± 1 yr, with a median of 8 yr (range: 3-9 yr) past menopause and a BMI of 30 (IQR: 29-32). GMP was highly acceptable to participants, permitting high adherence. Metabolic effects were similar for twice or thrice daily GMP supplementation. Glucose, insulin, and cytokine concentrations were no different. The postprandial area under the curve (AUC) for glucagon concentrations was significantly lower, and the insulin-glucagon ratio was significantly higher with GMP than that with the soy MTT. Postprandial AUC amylin concentration was significantly higher with GMP than that with the soy MTT and correlated with C-peptide (P < 0.001; R2 = 0.52) and greater satiety. Ingestion of GMP supplements twice daily reduced members of the genus Streptococcus (P = 0.009) and thrice daily consumption reduced overall α diversity. CONCLUSIONS GMP is shown to increase amylin concentrations, improve glucose homeostasis, and alter the fecal microbiome. GMP can be a helpful nutritional supplement in obese postmenopausal women at risk for metabolic syndrome. Further investigation is warranted. Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate assessment of self-reported appetite under free-living conditions is warranted to conduct large-scale intervention studies measuring appetite at a feasible cost. However, the performance of visual analogue scales (VASs) for this purpose has not been widely examined. METHOD This randomized crossover trial was conducted to evaluate VASs in free-living vs. clinic-based settings and to assess appetite response following hypocaloric whole-grain rye and refined wheat diets. Twenty-nine healthy adults with overweight or obesity continuously answered VAS questions about their perceived appetite from morning to evening. RESULTS No differences in whole-day VAS scores (primary outcome) between clinic-based and free-living settings were observed, whereas measures of total area under the curve (tAUC) showed increased fullness in clinic-based interventions of 7% (p < 0.008) for whole-day responses and 13% (p < 0.03) following a snack. Appetite responses for a whole day did not differ between diets whereas rye-based dinners induced 12% (p < 0.016) higher fullness and reduced hunger by 17% (p < 0.02) irrespective of setting. A reduction in hunger of 15% (p < 0.05) was also observed following rye-based vs. wheat-based lunches. CONCLUSION The results suggest that the VAS is valid for evaluation of appetite responses between diets under free-living conditions. No difference in self-reported appetite over the whole day was found after whole-grain rye vs. refined wheat-based diets, but there were some suggested differences at certain postprandial periods, in individuals with overweight or obesity.

Age-related differences in food-specific inhibitory control: Electrophysiological and behavioral evidence in healthy aging. Appetite 2023; 183:106478. Abstract
The number of older adults in the United States is estimated to nearly double from 52 million to 95 million by 2060. Approximately 80-85% of older adults are diagnosed with a chronic health condition. Many of these chronic health conditions are influenced by diet and physical activity, suggesting improved diet and eating behaviors could improve health-related outcomes. One factor that might improve dietary habits in older adults is food-related inhibitory control. We tested whether food-related inhibitory control, as measured via behavioral data (response time, accuracy) and scalp-recorded event-related potentials (ERP; N2 and P3 components), differed between younger and older adults over age 55. Fifty-nine older adults (31 females [52.5%], Mage = 64, SDage = 7.5) and 114 younger adults (82 females [71.9%], Mage = 20.8) completed two go/no-go tasks, one inhibiting to high-calorie stimuli and one inhibiting to low-calorie stimuli, while electroencephalogram (EEG) data were recorded. Older adults had slower overall response times than younger adults, but this was not specific to either food task. There was not a significant difference in accuracy between younger and older adults, but both groups' accuracy and response times were significantly better during the high-calorie task than the low-calorie task. For both the N2 and P3 ERP components, younger adults had larger no-go ERP amplitudes than older adults, but this effect was not food-specific, reflecting overall generalized lower inhibitory control processing in older adults. P3 amplitude for the younger adults demonstrated a specific food-related effect (greater P3 amplitude for high-calorie no-go than low-calorie no-go) that was not present for older adults. Findings support previous research demonstrating age-related differences in inhibitory control though those differences may not be specific to inhibiting towards food.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of fat-free mass loss (FFML) in modulating weight regain, in individuals with obesity, as well as the potential mechanisms involved, remain inconsistent. AIMS To determine if % FFML following weight loss (WL) is a predictor of weight regain, and to investigate the association between %FFML and changes in appetite markers. METHODS Seventy individuals with obesity (BMI: 36±4kg/m2; age: 44±9 years; 29 males) underwent 8 weeks of a very low-energy diet (550-660 kcal/day), followed by 4 weeks of gradual refeeding and weight stabilization, and a 9-month maintenance program (eucaloric diet). Body weight and body composition (fat mass (FM) and FFM) (primary outcomes), as well as ß-hydroxybutyrate (ßHB) plasma concentration (a marker of ketosis) in fasting and appetite-related hormones (ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide 1, peptide YY, and cholecystokinin) and subjective appetite feelings, in fasting and every 30 minutes after a fixed breakfast for 2.5h (secondary outcomes), were measured at baseline, week 9 and 1 year (and week 13 in 35 subjects (25 males)). The association between FFML, weight regain and changes in appetite was assessed by linear regression. RESULTS WL at week 9 was 17.5±4.3kg and %FFML 20.4±10.6%. Weight regain at 1 year was 1.7±8.2kg (8.8±45.0%). After adjusting for WL and FM at baseline, %FFML at week 9 was not a significant predictor of weight regain. Similar results were seen at week 13. The greater the %FFML at week 9, but not 13, the smaller the reduction, or greater the increase in basal ghrelin concentration (ß:-3.2; 95% CI: -5.0, -1.1; P=0.003), even after adjusting for WL and ß-hydroxybutyrate. CONCLUSION %FFML was not a significant predictor of weight regain at 1-year in individuals with obesity. However, a greater %FFML was accompanied by a greater increase in ghrelin secretion under ketogenic conditions, suggesting a link between FFM and appetite regulation. Abstract
Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF15) is seemingly involved in appetite control. Acute exercise increases GDF15 concentrations in lean humans, but acute and long-term effects of exercise on GDF15 in individuals with overweight/obesity are unknown. We investigated the effects of acute exercise and exercise training on GDF15 concentrations in individuals with overweight/obesity and associations with appetite and cardiometabolic markers. 90 physically inactive adults (20-45 years) with overweight/obesity were randomized to 6-months habitual lifestyle (CON, n=16), or isocaloric exercise of moderate (MOD, n=37) or vigorous intensity (VIG, n=37), 5 days/week. Testing was performed at baseline, 3, and 6 months. Plasma GDF15 concentrations, other metabolic markers, and subjective appetite were assessed fasted and in response to acute exercise before an ad libitum meal. Cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, insulin sensitivity, and intraabdominal adipose tissue were measured. At baseline, GDF15 increased 18% (95%CI: 4; 34) immediately after acute exercise and 32% (16; 50) 60 min post-exercise. Fasting GDF15 increased 21% (0; 46) in VIG after 3 months (p=0.045), but this attenuated at 6 months (13% (-11; 43), p=0.316) and was unchanged in MOD (11% (-6; 32), p=0.224, across 3 and 6 months). Post-exercise GDF15 did not change in MOD or VIG. GDF15 was not associated with appetite or energy intake. Higher GDF15 was associated with lower cardiorespiratory fitness, central obesity, dyslipidemia, and poorer glycemic control. In conclusion, GDF15 increased in response to acute exercise but was unaffected by exercise training. Higher GDF15 concentrations were associated with a less favorable cardiometabolic profile but not with markers of appetite. This suggests that GDF15 increases in response to acute exercise independent of training state. Whether this has an impact on free-living energy intake and body weight management needs investigation.

Abstract
Although the effect of continuous aerobic exercise on the appetite has been widely explored, the influence of resistance exercise (RE) with different variables, including training loads, training volume, and inter-set rest, on appetite responses requires further investigation. This study examined the importance of training load in RE-induced appetite regulation, with the total training volume and inter-set rest equalized. In total, 11 healthy young men (age = 23 ± 2 years, body mass index = 22 ± 2 kg/m2) were included. Participants completed 3 trials, namely moderate-load RE (MOD; 4 sets of 8 repetitions at 85% 8RM), low-load RE (LOW; 4 sets of 15 repetitions at 45% 8RM), and a control (CON; no exercise), in a randomized, crossover design. Subjective appetite ratings; concentrations of ghrelin, peptide YY (PYY), and lactate; and the autonomic nervous system activity were evaluated before exercise and 1 h after exercise. The hunger and predicted food consumption ratings, and ghrelin concentrations immediately after exercise were significantly lower in the MOD and LOW trials (p < 0.05 vs. CON). The PYY and lactate concentrations immediately after exercise were significantly higher in the MOD and LOW trials (p < 0.05 vs. CON). Heart rate variability recovery was slower in the MOD trial. These findings suggest that both moderate-load and low-load RE at equal training volumes and inter-set rest induce similar responses on hunger suppression and orexigenic signals, except for the slower recovery of autonomic modulation after moderate-load RE. Our results suggest that when individuals aim to potentiate appetite suppression after a bout of RE, both moderate- and low-load RE could be applied.

Abstract
Interval training protocols have gained popularity over the years, but their impact on appetite sensation compared to officially recommended training method, moderate intensity continuous training (MICT) is not well understood. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare a single session of high intensity interval training (HIIT) including sprint interval training (SIT) with MICT on appetite perception measured by the visual analog scale (VAS). After searching up articles published up to September 2021, 13 randomized controlled studies were included in the meta-analysis. Outcomes of meta-analysis demonstrated that both acute sessions of HIIT/SIT and MICT suppressed appetite compared to no-exercise control groups immediately post exercise but there were no significant effects 30-90 min post exercise or in AUC values, indicating a transient effect of exercise on appetite sensations. Moreover, differences in appetite sensations between HIIT/SIT and MICT were negligible immediately post exercise, but HIIT/SIT suppressed hunger (MD = -6.347 [-12.054, -0.639], p = 0.029) to a greater extent than MICT 30- to 90-min post exercise, while there was a lack of consistency other VAS subscales of appetite. More studies that address the impact of exercising timing, nutrient compositions of energy intake (energy intake (EI)) and differences in participants' characteristics and long-term studies analyzing chronic effects are needed to comprehensively examine the differences between HIIT/SIT and MICT on appetite and EI. Abstract
Appetite is a determinant of dietary intake and is impacted by sex hormones, exercise, and body composition among individuals without chronic conditions. Whether appetite is altered by exercise in the context of estrogen suppression and cancer survivorship is unknown. This randomized cross-over study compared appetite and ad libitum energy intake (EI) after acute resistance exercise (REx) versus sedentary (SED) conditions and in relation to body composition and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in breast cancer survivors (BCS). Physically inactive premenopausal females with previous stage I-III estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer completed a single bout of REx or SED 35 minutes after a standardized breakfast meal. Appetite visual analog scales and hormones (total ghrelin and peptide-YY [PYY]) were measured before and 30, 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes post-meal and expressed as area under the curve (AUC). Participants were offered a buffet-type meal 180 minutes after breakfast to assess ad libitum EI. Body composition (dual X-ray absorptiometry) and RMR (indirect calorimetry) were measured during a separate visit. Sixteen BCS were included (age: 46 ± 2 y, BMI: 24.9 ± 1.0 kg/m2). There were no differences in appetite ratings or EI between conditions. There were no differences in appetite hormone AUC, but REx resulted in lower ghrelin 120 (-85 ± 39 pg/mL, p = 0.031) and 180 (-114 ± 43 pg/mL, p = 0.018) minutes post-breakfast and higher PYY 90 (21 ± 10 pg/mL, p = 0.028) and 120 (14 ± 7 pg/mL, p = 0.041) minutes post-breakfast. Fat-free mass and RMR negatively correlated with hunger and prospective food consumption AUC after SED, but not REx. In sum, a single REx bout temporarily reduces orexigenic and increases anorexic appetite hormones, but not acute subjective appetite sensations or EI.

Abstract
Over several decades, the health benefits of consuming nuts have been investigated, resulting in a large body of evidence that nuts can reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The consumption of nuts, being a higher-fat plant food, is restricted by some in order to minimize weight gain. In this review, we discuss several factors related to energy intake from nuts, including food matrix and its impact on digestibility, and the role of nuts in regulating appetite. We review the data from randomized controlled trials and observational studies conducted to examine the relationship between nut intake and body weight or body mass index. Consistently, the evidence from RCTs and observational cohorts indicates that higher nut consumption does not cause greater weight gain; rather, nuts may be beneficial for weight control and prevention of long-term weight gain. Multiple mechanisms likely contribute to these findings, including aspects of nut composition which affect nutrient and energy availability as well as satiety signaling.

Abstract
PURPOSE Poor response to bariatric surgery, namely insufficient weight loss (IWL) or weight regain (WR), is a critical issue in the treatment of obesity. The purpose of our study was to assess the efficacy, feasibility, and tolerability of very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) for the management of this condition. METHODS A real-life prospective study was conducted on twenty-two patients who experienced poor response after bariatric surgery and followed a structured VLCKD. Anthropometric parameters, body composition, muscular strength, biochemical analyses, and nutritional behavior questionnaires were evaluated. RESULTS A significant weight loss (mean 14.1 ± 4.8%), mostly due to fat mass, was observed during VLCKD with the preservation of muscular strength. The weight loss obtained allowed patients with IWL to reach a body weight significantly lower than that obtained at the post-bariatric surgery nadir and to report the body weight of patients with WR at the nadir observed after surgery. The significantly beneficial changes in nutritional behaviors and metabolic profiles were observed without variations in kidney and liver function, vitamins, and iron status. The nutritional regimen was well tolerated, and no significant side effects were detected. CONCLUSION Our data demonstrate the efficacy, feasibility, and tolerability of VLCKD in patients with poor response after bariatric surgery.
