Pollutant load and ecotoxicological effects of sediment from stormwater retention basins to receiving surface water on Lumbriculus variegatus

The overflow of stormwater retention basins during intense and prolonged precipitation events may result in the direct input of particulate pollutants and remobilization of already sedimented particle-bound pollutants to receiving freshwater bodies. Particle-bound pollutants may cause adverse effects on aquatic biota, particularly sediment dwellers. Therefore, we investigated the sediment pollution load of a stream connected to the outfalls of two stormwater basins to determine the impact of the basins' discharges on the metal and organic pollutant content of the sediment. Also, the possible adverse effects of the pollutant load on benthic dwellers were evaluated in sediment toxicity tests with Lumbriculus variegatus and the effects on its growth, reproduction and the biomarkers catalase, acetylcholinesterase and metallothionein were analyzed. The results showed that the retention basins contained the highest load of pollutants. The pollutant load in the stream did not show a clear pollution pattern from the inlets. However, metal enrichment ratios revealed contamination with Cu, Pb and Zn with Pb and Zn above threshold effect concentrations in all sites. Ecotoxicity results showed that the retention basin samples were the most toxic compared to sediment from the stream. Exposure experiments with the stream sediment did not show considerable effects on reproduction, catalase activity and metallothionein concentration. However, modest inhibitions of growth and activity of acetylcholinesterase were detected. Based on the observed results, it cannot be concluded that overflows of the retention basin are responsible for the pollutant contents downstream of their inlet. Other sources that were not considered in this study, such as diffuse input, historic pollution and point sources further upstream as well as along the stream, are likely the major contributors of pollutant load in the sediment of the studied transects of the stream. Additionally, the observed results in the stormwater basin sediment further highlight their importance in retaining particle-bound pollutants and preventing ecotoxicological effects from receiving surface water bodies.

Iron-enhanced sand filters: Multi-year urban runoff (stormwater) quality performance

Untreated urban runoff (stormwater) is a major pathway for contaminants, e.g., nutrients and metals, to receiving waters. Where eutrophication occurs, dissolved phosphorus (DP) treatment is often necessary to protect receiving waters, yet few practical methods exist. Iron-enhanced sand filters (IESFs) have successfully treated DP in laboratory and limited field studies. Yet, multi-year-IESF studies to understand reportedly variable performance are unavailable. Herein, nine IESFs were sampled from 2015 to 2018 (528 samples; 70 rainfall-runoff events). Analysis focused on influent/effluent concentrations and removal efficiencies alongside design and catchment parameters. Overall, IESFs significantly removed most total and dissolved metal analytes. Generally, phosphorus removal efficiencies correlated positively with influent concentrations and IESF:catchment area ratios, demonstrating the importance of proper sizing and siting. For all paired influent-effluent samples, respective median total phosphorus, orthophosphate, and DP removal efficiencies were 33 %, 41 %, and 13 %, and respective median effluent concentrations were 120, 25, and 75 (μg/L); with two malfunctioning sites omitted, these respective concentrations were 92, 11, and 47, which better matched relevant goals and (indirectly applicable) standards. Nonetheless, phosphorus removal efficiency and effluent concentrations varied significantly across IESFs and events. Seasonality appeared influential, yet variable influent concentrations confounded spatiotemporal removal efficiency comparisons. Thus, compared to removal efficiencies, effluent concentrations may be better indicators of receiving water risk/benefit and of equal importance for water quality crediting. Although 122 influent-effluent pairs were analyzed, a greater sample size would allow multivariate hypothesis tests with additional predictors. Overall, in this multi-site-year study, most IESFs performed at (n = 5) or near (n = 2) phosphorus effluent concentration and less-so, removal efficiency benchmarks. This research provides new quantitative knowledge on long-term IESF performance for real-world conditions and goals. Research recommendations include multivariate dimension reduction studies and comprehensive, effective information transfer to improve IESF understanding and performance and address practitioner needs, e.g., for refined design, operation, and assessment guidance.

Phytostabilization of trace elements and 13C isotope composition of Atriplex atacamensis Phil. cultivated in mine tailings treated with organic amendments

Mining generates large quantities of mineral processing wastes that are typically stored in mine tailings (MT) ponds. Long-term exposure of the surrounding areas to the material from the tailings ponds has been reported to have adverse effects on both human health and the environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of Atriplex atacamensis Phil. to phytostabilize metals (Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) and sulfur (S) when grown directly on mine tailings with and without compost (C) and humic substance (HS). The stress status of A. atacamensis Phil. was also evaluated through the ¹³C isotopic composition of bulk leaves. A 120-day greenhouse experiment was conducted and three treatments were evaluated: (i) MT without any amendments (control), (ii) MT + C (dose: 89 ton ha^-1), and (iii) MT + HS (0.72 ton ha^-1). Mine tailings material exhibited low salinity, alkaline pH, high extractable S-SO₄ concentrations, and low fertility; total Fe, Mn, and Zn concentrations were within the reference range for mine tailings, but total Cu concentrations were high at 1860 ± 236 mg kg^-1. The HS had higher pH, EC, CEC, and available concentrations of N, P, and K than compost, while S-SO₄ concentrations were similar in both amendments. ¹³C NMR analysis showed that the HS contained more alkyl, aromatic, and phenolic groups, while the compost was dominated by O-alkyl and carboxyl groups. At the end of the experiment, the MT + C treatment achieved a significant decrease in Cu, Fe, and Mn concentrations in the roots and aboveground parts of A. atacamensis Phil. and an increase in Zn values in both tissues. Both amendments increased the sulfur content in the aboveground parts, while metal concentrations under the HS treatment proved similar to control. Furthermore, the δ¹³CV-PDB values obtained in this study indicate that the organic amendments did not cause additional physiological stress to the plants compared to the MT treatment. Overall, A. atacamensis Phil. was shown to have the ability to phytostabilize metals and sulfur, making it a potential candidate species for in situ evaluation of the phytostabilization process on mine tailings.

Terrestrial nanoparticle contaminants and geospatial optics using the Sentinel-3B OLCI satellite in the Tinto River estuary region of the Iberian Peninsula

The Tinto River is known globally for having a reddish color due to the high concentration of dissolved metals in its waters. The general objective of this study is to analyze the dispersion of nanoparticles (NPs) and ultra-fine particles in terrestrial and geospatial suspended sediments (SSs) using Sentinel-3B OLCI (Ocean Land Color Instrument) satellite images; by examining water turbidity levels (TSM_NN), suspended pollution potential (ADG_443_NN) and presence of chlorophyll-a (CHL_NN). The images were collected in the estuary of the Tinto River, in the city of Nerva, Spanish province of Huelva, between 2019 and 2021. The following hazardous elements were identified in nanoparticles and ultra-fine particles by FE-SEM/EDS: As, Cd, Ni, V, Se, Mo, Pb, Sb and Sn. Sentinel-3B OLCI satellite images detected a 2019 TSM_NN of 23.47 g^-3, and a 2021 reading of 16.38 g^-3.

Accumulation of metal trace elements in different body parts of terrestrial Roman snail Helix pomatia L., 1758 on three polluted sites in Serbia

Atmospheric pollution remains one of the growing concerns in the twenty-first century, with particular focus on metal trace elements (MTE) from anthropogenic sources, due to their adverse effects on biota. The concentration and type of MTE in the atmosphere and in the soil are diverse, depending on the origin of pollutants, which can cause diverse detrimental effects on organisms living in the nearby environment. Three sites in Central Serbia with different origins of MTE pollution (urban contamination, smelting, and fly ash area) were assessed, using terrestrial Roman snails (Helix pomatia) as biomarker organisms. These snails are sentinel organisms and are known for their capacities for accumulation of MTE. Snails were sampled and their body was divided in three parts: viscera, foot, and shell and concentrations of MTE were determined in each of these body parts using inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry. Results showed contrasting MTE accumulation patterns in body parts of the snails. Of three studied sites, snails sampled in the vicinity of fly ash containment had lower concentrations of MTE compared to other two polluted sites.

Physical-chemical characterization and leaching studies involving drill cuttings generated in oil and gas pre-salt drilling activities

This work describes characterization and leaching studies of pre-salt drill cuttings from offshore oil and gas exploration in ultradeep waters. The metals Fe, Al, and Ba were present in the highest concentrations in drill cuttings (30000 mg kg^-1, 32600 mg kg^-1, and 33000 mg kg^-1 respectively). The most significant contents of Ba, Al, Fe, Cu, Pb, Mn, Si, and Zn were found in cuttings containing non-aqueous fluids (NADF), but the highest concentrations of Ni and Cr were found in samples containing aqueous fluids (WBDF). The content of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in the samples with WBDF fluids ranged from < 5.58 to 15.76 mg Kg^-1 while the TPH content of the samples with NADF ranged from 28.46 to 47.16 mg Kg^-1. Data on the content of unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs) and sheen tests indicated probable contamination of some cutting samples with oil. Most samples showed some degree of contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The metals present in the highest concentrations in saline and aqueous leachates were Si and Ba. The metals Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn were present in varied concentrations in the saline leachates, and the metals Si, Ba, Cu, and Zn were found in the aqueous leachates.

Metal(loid)s and persistent organic pollutants in yellow European eel from the Raša River, Croatia

The anthropogenic impact on the aquatic environment of the Raša River (Croatia) was investigated through the analysis of seven polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), seven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), three DDT isomers, and 22 major and trace elements using yellow European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) as a biological indicator of contamination. The obtained data indicated generally low contamination status in the surrounding area. Levels of all organic contaminants in muscle significantly increased with lipid content, length, weight and body condition. In both muscle and liver, most metal(loid)s decreased or remained unchanged with increasing size, while at downstream location only several elements (Cd, Cu, Fe, Na, Se, U, V, Zn) accumulated in the liver with fish growth. Spatial analysis revealed higher pressure of Ag, Cd, Cr, Mo, Tl, U, and V at the downstream location, revealing the potentially limited impact of historical coal mining industry on the lower reaches of the Raša River.

Quantitative analysis of restricted metals and metalloids in tattoo inks: A systematic review and meta-analysis

The various ingredients and impurities that can be detected within tattoo inks have been associated with a myriad of dermatologic complications. Legislation regarding these antigenic substances varies widely around the world, with Europe serving as both the research and regulatory center on these intradermal formulations. Although industry is said to be moving away from metallic and metalloid pigments in exchange for organic or organometallic dyes, surveys of commercially available inks continue to detect these elements at concentrations considered unsafe for application into the dermis. In order to better assess the formulation and safety of tattoo ink, we present a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies quantifying restricted metals and metalloids in commercially available tattoo ink products. Among the papers selected, inconsistencies were noted in the degree of specificity by which ink products were identified and the elements sampled for. In addition, the analytical targets' valency and/or solubility were not always considered in accordance with regulation criteria. Of note, chromium, by total content and that of its regulated +6 valency, exceeded its maximum allowed concentration in nearly every sample tested. Total copper content exceeded the limit for soluble copper in half of inks sampled. In descending order, concentrations of cadmium, barium, mercury, soluble copper, arsenic, zinc, antimony, and lead violated regulations in one-sixth or fewer of samples tested. Cobalt and tin levels never violated regulation. Overall, our findings indicate that unsafe levels of restricted elements continue to be detected across studies, warranting further investigation under a regulatory lens.

Health risk assessment and differential distribution of Arsenic and metals in organs of Urophycis brasiliensis a commercial fish from Southwestern Atlantic coast

The concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn were analyzed in muscle, gills, and liver of Urophycis brasiliensis from two Southwestern Atlantic catch areas (Brazil and Argentina). Additionally, the health risk of general and fishermen populations through fish consumption was estimated. The gills showed the highest concentrations of most of the elements, followed by the liver. With the exception of As, the muscle was the organ with the lowest concentrations of most elements. Levels of arsenic in muscle of U. brasiliensis were exceeded the maximum permissible levels for human consumption recommended by local and international guidelines. The target hazard quotients (THQs) and the carcinogenic risk (CR) showed no risk for individual and all elements. These results highlight the importance of arsenic speciation in U. brasiliensis muscle in order to generate more reliable risk estimates.

Monitoring of metal content in the tissues of wild boar (Sus scrofa) and its food safety aspect

The study was performed on 10 female and 10 male wild boars (Sus scrofa) after shooting during the regular hunting season to investigate the concentration of metals in the muscle and fat tissue. The concentrations of essential and non-essential elements were determined (arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn)) using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The concentrations of As, Hg, and Cd were below the limit of detection (As, Hg: < 0.5 mg/kg, Cd: < 0.05 mg/kg) in every tissue sample of both sexes. The lead was detected as 0.36 ± 0.16 mg/kg and 0.22 ± 0.06 mg/kg in the muscle of females and males, respectively, showing a significant difference between the sexes (p = 0.0184). The measured concentration of Cr was 0.14 ± 0.08 mg/kg and 0.13 ± 0.06 mg/kg, and that of copper was 1.22 ± 0.14 mg/kg and 1.06 ± 0.16 mg/kg in the muscle of females and males, respectively. The same tendency was observed in the case of copper content of fat tissues (female: 0.13 ± 0.10 mg/kg; male: 0.13 ± 0.04 mg/kg; p = 0.2707). Manganese concentration of muscle was 0.45 ± 0.30 mg/kg (female) and 1.36 ± 0.96 mg/kg (male), and that of fat tissue was 0.32 ± 0.22 mg/kg (female) and 0.74 ± 0.75 mg/kg (male). The Zn was detected as 56.75 ± 7.86 mg/kg and 1.83 ± 0.76 mg/kg in the muscle and fat of females and 52.12 ± 11.51 mg/kg and 1.94 ± 0.57 mg/kg in males, respectively. Based on data, the consumption of fat and muscle tissues of the wild boars tested can be food toxicologically objectionable, mainly due to the lead content, and thus pose a risk to frequent consumers of this type of game meat.

Pollution status and ecological risk assessment of metal(loid)s in the sediments of the world's largest mangrove forest: A data synthesis in the Sundarbans

The Sundarbans is the largest single-mass mangrove forest in the world, experiencing environmental and anthropogenic stress from metal(loid) inputs. We undertook a comprehensive assessment of sediment contamination and ecological risks posed by metal(loid)s in the Sundarbans using previously published data. There was a distinct difference in metal(loid) content, pollution level and ecological risk in Bangladeshi and Indian parts of the Sundarbans, with the Indian counterpart experiencing relatively higher metal(loid) pollution. The higher pollution level in India might be attributed to its vicinity to municipal and industrial areas that act the primary source of metal(loid)s in the Sundarbans. The cumulative ecological risks of metal(loid)s pointed out that the south-eastern part of Bangladeshi Sundarbans and north-eastern Indian part are at moderate ecological risk. This research will provide valuable data to inform the responsible authorities and will underpin future policies and management to reduce future metal(loid) inputs in the Sundarbans.

Metal mixtures modeling identifies birth weight-associated gene networks in the placentas of children born extremely preterm

Prenatal exposure to toxic metals is linked to numerous adverse birth and later-in-life outcomes. These outcomes are tied to disrupted biological processes in fetal-derived tissues including the placenta and umbilical cord yet the precise pathways are understudied in these target tissues. We set out to examine the relationship between metal concentrations in umbilical cord and altered gene expression networks in placental tissue. These novel relationships were investigated in a subset of the Extremely Low Gestational Age Newborn (ELGAN) cohort (n = 226). Prenatal exposure to 11 metals/metalloids was measured using inductively coupled plasma tandem-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) in cord tissue, ensuring passage through the placental barrier. RNA-sequencing was used to quantify >37,000 mRNA transcripts. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified with respect to each metal. Weighted gene co-expression analysis identified gene networks modulated by metals. Two innovative mixtures modeling techniques, namely principal components analysis and quantile-based g-computation, were employed to identify genes/gene networks associated with multi-metal exposure. Individually, lead was associated with the strongest genomic response of 191 DEGs. Joint lead and cadmium exposure was related to 657 DEGs, including DNA Methyl Transferase 1 (DNMT1). These genes were enriched for the Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 2 (EIF2) pathway. Four gene networks, each containing genes within a Nuclear Factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of Activated B Cells (NF-kB)-mediated network, were significantly increased in average expression level in relation to increases in all metal concentrations. All four of these metal mixture-associated gene networks were negatively correlated with important predictors of neonatal health including birth weight, placenta weight, and fetal growth. Bringing together novel methodologies from epidemiological mixtures analyses and toxicogenomics, applied to a unique cohort of extremely preterm children, the present study highlighted critical genes and pathways in the placenta dysregulated by prenatal metal mixtures. These represent potential mechanisms underlying the developmental origins of metal-induced disease.

Trace metals distribution between the surface waters of the Gulf of Cadiz and the Alboran Sea

This study was conducted to address the changes in the surface distribution of trace metals (cobalt, copper, iron, cadmium, nickel, zinc, lead and molybdenum) as they are advected from the Gulf of Cadiz to the Alboran Sea, through the Strait of Gibraltar (south Iberian Peninsula), regions of great ecosystemic importance. Trace metals concentrations were measured in samples collected during two oceanographic cruises, together with the main factors affecting their spatial distribution and temporal variability (i.e., wind and surface currents). Several rivers, the main source of trace metals in this region, flow into the Gulf of Cadiz which is connected with the Alboran Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar by the general circulation pattern. The surface circulation pattern leads to an offshore-eastward gradient that is highly influenced by wind variability. An increase in vertical turbulence induced by the winds or the tidal cycle causes the dilution of trace metals' concentration by mixing rich-metal superficial waters with poor-metal subsurface waters. Additionally, along the eastward displacement of surface waters, several water retention zones have been described (Trafalgar, Camarinal, the Coastal Cyclonic Gyre) that imply an increase in trace metals concentration close to the coast. In addition, our results suggest that the coastal edges of the Strait of Gibraltar also act as a source of certain metals to the Alboran Sea, probably due to the industries in the proximity areas.

Multi-omics eco-surveillance of bacterial community function in legacy contaminated estuary sediments

Complex legacy contamination is a major issue for many estuaries, with toxicity affecting change in bacterial communities, and their provision of associated goods and services. Sequencing surveys of bacterial community composition provide inferred function; however, additional insights may be generated by measurement of realised metabolic phenotypes. We apply multi-omics (genomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics), with traditional sediment quality analyses, to characterise sediment-associated bacterial communities in an estuary subject to legacy metal contamination (Zn, Hg, As, Cd, Cu and Pb). Analyses of bacterial composition and inferred function (genomics) are coupled with measurements of realised bacterial phenotype (metabolomics and lipidomics) at multiple industrialised and reference sites. At sites with the highest sediment metal concentrations (NTB), we also observed increased abundances of hydrocarbon and sulphuric acid metabolites, indicating additional sediment contamination. Bacterial phyla across sampled sites were dominated by Proteobacteria and Desulfobacteria. NTB sites were enriched with metabolically versatile, cooperative and biofilm forming phyla including, Zixibacteria, Spirochaetota, SAR324 clade, Proteobacteria, Latescibacterota, Desulfobacterota, Deferrisomtota and Acidobateriota; with inferred functions characterised by sulphur metabolism, pathways associated with the degradation of complex organic molecules, and fermentation. Reference sites were characterised by enhanced vitamin biosynthesis, cell wall, cofactor and carbohydrate biosynthesis, and CO₂ fixation. Measured metabolic phenotypes at NTB sites supported predicted functions, with most consistent change observed to naphthalene and aminobenzoate degradation pathways and carbohydrate metabolism (galactose, amino and nucleotide sugar). Change in NTB metabolite profiles was most highly correlated with sediment Hg concentrations, indicative of toxic exposure and potential for Hg methylation. Lipid profiles generated further insight into potential functional (hydroxy fatty acids) and community level change (ceramide phosphoethanolamines, unsaturated glycerides). Multi-omics outputs provided insights into bacterial community functions, modes of contaminant toxicity and expressed mechanisms of adaptation, necessary to better inform management decisions and predictive models in increasingly human-influenced environments.

Laser-based techniques: Novel tools for the identification and characterization of aged microplastics with developed biofilm

Microplastics found in the environment are often covered with a biofilm, which makes their analysis difficult. Therefore, the biofilm is usually removed before analysis, which may affect the microplastic particles or lead to their loss during the procedure. In this work, we used laser-based analytical techniques and evaluated their performance in detecting, characterizing, and classifying pristine and aged microplastics with a developed biofilm. Five types of microplastics from different polymers were selected (polyamide, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride) and aged under controlled conditions in freshwater and wastewater. The development of biofilm and the changes in the properties of the microplastic were evaluated. The pristine and aged microplastics were characterized by standard methods (e.g., optical and scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy), and then laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were used. The results show that LIBS could identify different types of plastics regardless of the ageing and major biotic elements of the biofilm layer. LA-ICP-MS showed a high sensitivity to metals, which can be used as markers for various plastics. In addition, LA-ICP-MS can be employed in studies to monitor the adsorption and desorption (leaching) of metals during the ageing of microplastics. The use of these laser-based analytical techniques was found to be beneficial in the study of environmentally relevant microplastics.

Quantitative ion character-activity relationship methods for assessing the ecotoxicity of soil metal(loid)s to lettuce

New pollution elements introduced by the rapid development of modern industry and agriculture may pose a serious threat to the soil ecosystem. To explore the ecotoxicity and risk of these elements, we systematically studied the acute toxicity of 18 metal(loid)s toward lettuce using hydroponic experiments and quantitative relationships between element toxicity and ionic characteristics using ion-grouping and ligand-binding theory methods, thereby establishing a quantitative ion character-activity relationship (QICAR) model for predicting the phytotoxicity threshold of data-poor elements. The toxicity of 18 ions to lettuce differed by more than four orders of magnitude (0.05-804.44 μM). Correlation and linear regression analysis showed that the ionic characteristics significantly associated with this toxicity explained only 23.8-50.3% of the toxicity variation (R2Adj = 0.238-0.503, p < 0.05). Relationships between toxicity and ionic properties significantly improved after separating metal(loid) ions into soft and hard, with R2Adj of 0.793 and 0.784 (p < 0.05), respectively. Three ligand-binding parameters showed different predictive effects on lettuce metal(loid) toxicity. Compared with the binding constant of the biotic ligand model (log K) and the hard ligand scale (HLScale) (p > 0.05), the softness consensus scale (σCon) was significantly correlated with toxicity and provided the best prediction (R2Adj = 0.844, p < 0.001). We selected QICAR equations based on soft-hard ion classification and σCon methods to predict phytotoxicity of metal(loid)s, which can be used to derive ecotoxicity for data-poor metal(loid)s, providing preliminary assessment of their ecological risks.

Occupational Exposure to Incidental Nanomaterials in Metal Additive Manufacturing: An Innovative Approach for Risk Management

The benefits of metal 3D printing seem unquestionable. However, this additive manufacturing technology brings concerns to occupational safety and health professionals, since recent studies show the existence of airborne nanomaterials in these workplaces. This article explores different approaches to manage the risk of exposure to these incidental nanomaterials, on a case study conducted in a Portuguese organization using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology. A monitoring campaign was performed using a condensation particle counter, a canning mobility particle sizer and air sampling for later scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis, proving the emission of nano-scale particles and providing insights on number particle concentration, size, shape and chemical composition of airborne matter. Additionally, Control Banding Nanotool v2.0 and Stoffenmanager Nano v1.0 were applied in this case study as qualitative tools, although designed for engineered nanomaterials. This article highlights the limitations of using these quantitative and qualitative approaches when studying metal 3D Printing workstations. As a result, this article proposes the IN Nanotool, a risk management method for incidental nanomaterials designed to overcome the limitations of other existing approaches and to allow non-experts to manage this risk and act preventively to guarantee the safety and health conditions of exposed workers.

Mercury Exposure from the Consumption of Dietary Supplements Containing Vegetable, Cod Liver, and Shark Liver Oils

Vegetable and fish oils constitute a significant part of all dietary supplements. Due to increasing environmental pollution, the raw materials used for their production may be contaminated with toxic substances, including metals. The aim of the present study was to determine the mercury (Hg) content in vegetable oils, shark liver oils, and cod liver oils. The tests conducted were to help determine the level of mercury contamination of the tested preparations and the related potential threat to human health. The amount of Hg in the tested dietary supplements was compared, and the amount of the metal consumed at various times of use was determined. A total of 36 preparations of dietary supplements available on the Polish market were used for the study. The method of atomic absorption spectrometry using the amalgamation technique was used for the determinations (AMA 254, Altec, Czech Republic). Among the sample of all of the tested preparations, the Hg concentration ranged from 0.023 to 0.427 µg/kg, with an average of 0.165 µg/kg. Differences in Hg content in the various tested preparations (shark liver oil, cod liver oil, and vegetable oils) were statistically significant. The average concentration of Hg in the vegetable oils (0.218 µg/kg) was more than twice that of the cod liver oils (0.106 µg/kg) and shark liver oils (0.065 µg/kg). In none of the tested preparations did the amount of Hg exceed the acceptable standard for dietary supplements (0.10 mg/kg). The analysis showed that the Hg content in vegetable oils, shark liver oils, and fish oils from the Polish market is at a low level, guaranteeing the safety of their use, and as such, they do not pose a threat to health.

Higher Risks of Copper Toxicity in Turbid Waters: Quantifying the Bioavailability of Particle-Bound Metals to Set Site-Specific Water Quality Criteria

In coastal waters, particulate metals constitute a substantial fraction of the total metals; however, the prevalent water quality criteria are primarily based on dissolved metals, seemingly neglecting the contribution of particulate metals. Here we developed a method to quantify the toxicity risk of particulate metals, and proposed a way to calculate modifying factors (MFs) for setting site-specific criteria in turbid waters. Specifically, we used a side-by-side experimental design to study copper (Cu) bioaccumulation and toxicity in an estuarine clam, Potamocorbula laevis, under the exposure to "dissolved only" and "dissolved + particulate" ⁶⁵Cu. A toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic model (TK-TD) was used to quantify the processes of Cu uptake, ingestion, assimilation, egestion, and elimination, and to relate mortality risk to tissue Cu. We find that particulate Cu contributes 40-67% of the Cu bioaccumulation when the suspended particulate matter (SPM) ranges from 12 to 229 mg L^-1. The Cu-bearing SPM also increases the sensitivity of organisms to internalized Cu by decreasing the internal threshold concentration (C_IT) from 141 to 76.8 μg g^-1. MFs were derived based on the TK-TD model to consider the contribution of particulate Cu (in the studied SPM range) for increasing Cu bioaccumulation (MF = 1.3-2.2) and toxicity (MF = 2.3-3.9). Water quality criteria derived from dissolved metal exposure need to be lowered by dividing by an MF to provide adequate protection. Overall, the method we developed provides a scientifically sound framework to manage the risks of metals in turbid waters.

Comparative bioaccumulation, translocation, and phytotoxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles and metal ions in soil-crop system

Exposure of the soil environment to metal nanoparticles (MNPs) has been extensive because of their indiscriminate use and the disposal of MNP products in various applications. In MNP-amended soil, various crops can absorb the nanoparticles, and accumulation of the MNPs in farm products has potential risks for bioconcentration in humans and livestock. Here, we evaluated the comparative bioaccumulation, translocation, and phytotoxicity of MNPs (ZnO and CuO NPs) and metal ions (Zn(NO3)2 and Cu(NO3)2) in four different crops, namely lettuce, radish, bok choy, and tomato. We carried out pot experiments to evaluate the phytotoxicity in the crops from the presence of MNPs and metal ions. Phytotoxicity from different treatments differed depending on the plant species, and metal types. In addition, exposure to Zn and Cu showed positive dose-dependent effects on their bioaccumulation in each crop. However, there were no significant differences in metal bioaccumulation depending on whether the crops were exposed to MNPs or metal ions. By calculating the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF), we were able to estimate the biological uptake and translocation abilities of MNPs and metal ions for each crop. It was found that lettuce and radish had greater BCFs than bok choy and tomato, while bok choy and tomato had higher TFs. Also, the uptake and translocation of Zn were better than those of Cu. However, the values for BCF and TF for each crop showed no significant differences between MNP and metal ion exposure. A micro X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) spectrometer analysis demonstrated that only Zn elements appeared in the primary veins and edges of all leaves and the storage root of radish. Our study aims to estimate bioaccumulation, translocation, and the implied potential risks from MNPs accumulated in different plant species.

PAHs and trace metals in marine surficial sediments from the Porcupine Bank (NE Atlantic): A contribution to establishing background concentrations

Little is known about pollutant concentrations in marine remote areas such as the Porcupine Bank in the NE Atlantic Ocean. Remote locations are much less studied than the more readily accessible coastal areas, nevertheless, are of great importance both to unveil how far human influence has reached and, are more challenging, to infer background concentrations (BCs) of naturally occurring and/or anthropogenic pollutants. Knowledge of contaminant background levels are critical for establishing remediation and management strategies; in addition, background assessment is heavily emphasised in legislative monitoring requirements. Obtaining suitable sampling locations to assess background concentrations can be challenging, as samples should match characteristics to the target area and not be impacted by historical or current inputs of the chemical substances of study. Anthropogenic impacts generally deem local-based sampling to be unsuitable to infer background pollution values. Sampling in remote areas such as the Porcupine Bank better fulfils low impact and pressure requirements making them more suitable for the derivation of background concentration estimates for organic compounds and metals. The total concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metal(loid)s in deep sea sediments were evaluated and both an environmental status and a set of concentration data were adequate to derive BCs concentrations is presented. Concentration data indicated, in comparison with previous published data, trace level presence of PAHs and metal(loids) in sediments from the Porcupine Bank. These values will provide a valuable tool to identify the natural presence of organic and inorganic compounds and be the basis to perform a sound environmental assessment.

Metal bioaccumulation and transfer in benthic species based on isotopic signatures of individual amino acids in South China Sea cold seep environments

Cold seeps are deep-sea 'oases' with dense and dominant coexisting populations of large mussels and tubeworms under extreme environments. Under such natural source of high metal concentrations, the present study investigated the metal bioaccumulation and transfer with trophic positions in six benthic species by the isotopic δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C signatures in the active Haima cold seep, South China Sea. Comparing the isotopic signatures of bulk-tissue and amino acids by compound-specific isotopic analysis (CSIA-AA), we found that the bulk trophic (TP_B) values in the benthos except mussels were significantly higher than those of CSIA-based TP_Glu-Phe values. The estimated CSIA-based TP_Glu-Phe values showed a relatively compressed food chain with much changeable and unique amino acid isotopic heterogeneity, followed slim tubeworms (1.20)<mussels (1.38)<clams (1.52)<brittle stars (1.82)<giant tubeworms (2.16)<shrimps (2.31). All species accumulated relatively high concentrations of Fe, Zn, Cu, and Cr, especially for Zn in clams. Pearson correlation analysis showed that most metals had no significant relationship between their bioaccumulation and trophic positions, whereas Hg showed a significantly positive bioaccumulation through trophic transfer in such a compressed food chain. Water exposure was a major metal source rather than bacterial assimilation for most metals in the cold seep higher consumers. Hyperaccumulation of specific metals in some tissues of different benthos indicated different metal overflows in the Haima cold seep (As and Ni for tubeworms, Zn and Cd for clam gills, Ag and Cu for mussel gills). This study demonstrated high metal adaptations in different species and stable isotopic characteristics of amino acid metabolism in a natural high metal source of an active deep-sea cold seep, which is important for deep-sea development and environmental protection.

Particulate Matter and Its Components Induce Alteration on the T-Cell Response: A Population Biomarker Study

Compared with the T-cell potential of particulate matter (PM) in animal studies, comprehensive evaluation on the impairments of T-cell response and exposure-response from PM and its components in human population is limited. There were 768 participants in this study. We measured environmental PM and its polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals and urinary metabolite levels of PAHs and metals among population. T lymphocyte and its subpopulation (CD4⁺ T cells and CD8⁺ T cells) and the expressions of T-bet, GATA3, RORγt, and FoxP3 were measured. We explored the exposure-response of PM compositions by principal component analysis and mode of action by mediation analysis. There was a significant decreasing trend for T lymphocytes and the levels of T-bet and GATA3 with increased PM levels. Generally, there was a negative correlation between PM, urinary 1-hydroxypyrene, urinary metals, and the levels of T-bet and GATA3 expression. Additionally, CD4⁺ T lymphocytes were found to mediate the associations of PM_2.5 with T-bet expression. PM and its bound PAHs and metals could induce immune impairments by altering the T lymphocytes and genes of T-bet and GATA3.

Distribution and accumulation of metals and metalloids in planktonic food webs of the Mediterranean Sea (MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE campaign)

Particle-size classes (7 fractions from 0.8 to 2000 μm) were collected in the deep chlorophyll maximum along a Mediterranean transect including the northern coastal zone (bays of Toulon and Marseilles, France), the offshore zone (near the North Balearic Thermal Front), and the southern coastal zone (Gulf of Gabès, Tunisia). Concentrations of biotic metals and metalloids (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Sb, V, Zn) bound to living or dead organisms and faecal pellets were assessed by phosphorus normalisation. Biotic metals and metalloids concentrations (except Cr, Mn, and V) were higher in the offshore zone than in the coastal zones. In addition, biotic Sb and V concentrations appeared to be affected by atmospheric deposition, and biotic Cr concentrations appeared to be affected by local anthropogenic inputs. Essential elements (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, V, Zn) were very likely controlled both by the metabolic activity of certain organisms (nanoeukaryotes, copepods) and trophic structure. In the northern coastal zone, biomagnification of essential elements was controlled by copepods activities. In the offshore zone, metals and metalloids were not biomagnified probably due to homeostasis regulatory processes in organisms. In the southern coastal zone, biomagnification of As, Cu, Cr, Sb could probably induce specific effects within the planktonic network.

Using cluster algorithms with a machine learning technique and PMF models to quantify local-specific origins of PM2.5 and associated metals in Taiwan

The influence of long-range transport (LRT) of air pollutants on neighboring regions and countries has been documented. The magnitude of LRT aerosols and related constituents can misdirect control strategies for local air quality management. In this study, we aimed to quantify PM_2.5 (diameter less than 2.5 μm, PM_2.5) and associated metals derived from local sources and LRT in different geographic locations in Taiwan using advanced receptor models. We collected daily PM_2.5 samples (n = ∼1000) and analyzed 28 metals every three days from 2016 to 2018 in the northern, central-south, eastern, and southern areas of Taiwan. We first used a machine learning technique with a cluster algorithm coupled with a backward trajectory to classify local, regional, and LRT-related aerosols. We then quantified the source contributions with a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model for Taiwan weighted by region-specific populations. The northern and eastern regions were found to be more vulnerable to LRT-related PM_2.5 and metals than the central-south and southern regions in Taiwan. The LRT increased Pb and As concentrations by 90-200% and ∼40% in the northern and central-south regions. Ambient PM_2.5-metals mainly originated from local traffic-related emissions in the northern, central-south, and southern regions, whereas oil combustion was the primary source of PM_2.5-metals in the eastern region. By subtracting the influence from the LRT, the contributions of domestic emission sources to ambient PM_2.5 metals in Taiwan were 35% from traffic-related emission, 17% from non-ferrous metallurgy, 13% from iron ore and steel factories, 12% from coal combustion, 12% from oil combustion, 10% from incinerator emissions, and <1% from cement manufacturing emissions. This study proposed an advanced method for refining local source contributions to ambient PM_2.5 metals in Taiwan, which provides useful information on regional control strategies.

Polycyclic aromatic compound and trace metal element residues in Mytilus mussels at marine wildlife hotspots on the Pacific coast of Canada

The Pacific coast of Canada has a rich marine fauna and a growing human population with increasing potential for pollution releases, but there is currently little overlap between marine wildlife hotspots and ongoing biomonitoring efforts for less bioaccumulative contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) and trace metals (metals). We surveyed PACs and metals at marine bird breeding colonies in coastal British Columbia in 2018 by analyzing chemical residues in the soft tissue of bivalve Mytilus sp. mussels collected from stations (n = 3) at seven sites. The concentration of sum PACs (∑₄₃PAC) and high molecular weight (HMW) PACs were highest at the Second Narrows colony in Vancouver Harbour, a highly urbanized and industrialized port within the Salish Sea. For conservation areas, two Salish Sea and three Pacific Ocean coast colonies, PACs were generally lower. However, ∑₄₃PAC, ∑_HMWPAC, and several HMW congeners at the remote site of Triangle Island, a Marine National Wildlife Area, were not significantly different from Second Narrows. The dominant PAC sources at all sites are likely pyrogenic rather than petrogenic, as suggested by PAC profiles, proportion of parent PACs, and source-indicator congeners. For metals, site differences were found for seven out of eight priority metals, but principal component analysis indicated that site differences, such as high mercury and cadmium at offshore sites, are likely related to environmental and biological variables including salinity, condition index, water temperature, and shell length. Our survey across a broad coastal region shows that PAC and metal biomonitoring programs with mussels should include wildlife hotspots where the exposure of protected vertebrate species to pollutants with low bioaccumulation potential would be less obvious, and shows that collection of data on key covariates (e.g. lipid content, salinity) will be critical to tracking long-term trends and detecting pollution release events.

Risk assessment and spatio-temporal distribution of dissolved trace metals in Swarna, Sharavati and Kali estuaries, South-West Coast of India

Trace metals act as a limiting nutrient and prerequisite for primary productivity in marine environments. The distribution of metals in dissolved phase along the salinity gradients of Swarna, Sharavati and Kali estuaries in southwestern India, during post and pre-monsoon seasons, were studied. We have investigated the behaviour of trace metals in the estuarine environment and their extent of impact on human health and ecosystem. The study revealed, non-conservative behaviour of dissolved Mn, Fe, Ni, Cd and Co in the estuaries. Whereas Cu behaved non-conservatively in post-monsoon and conservatively in pre-monsoon seasons. Risk assessment studies revealed that higher chronic daily intake (CDI) in humans, through dermal pathway, in Swarna and Sharavati estuaries during post-monsoon, whereas it was during pre-monsoon season in the Kali estuary. Hazard Index values for the studied metals in adults and children are below risk thresholds, though children are more prone to health risk through the dermal pathway.

Ecological risk assessment of metal and hydrocarbon pollution in sediments from an urban tropical estuary: Tijuca lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

Urban tropical lagoons are often impacted by eutrophication, metal, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination, but the toxicity of their bottom sediments is still poorly investigated in South America. Aiming to contribute to filling this gap, a sediment quality assessment was conducted in the Tijuca Lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) using different lines of evidence (LOEs) including sediment characterization, determination of metals and PAHs, and acute toxicity testing with burrowing amphipods (Tiburonella viscana). Mud and organic matter contents played a crucial role in contaminant distribution along the lagoon. The concentrations of PAH were generally low (mean ΣPAH = 795.42 ± 1146.2 ng/g; n = 23), but a contamination hotspot of light PAH compounds was identified. Such PAHs were mainly pyrolytic, probably related to the deposition of atmospheric pollution, although petrogenic compounds also occur in the lagoon. The data indicated the occurrence of geochemical anomalies of Zn, Cu, Pb, and Hg (mean values = 176.9 ± 91.6, 45.1 ± 21.3, 35.2 ± 15.0, 0.1442 ± 0.0893 mg/kg, respectively; n = 23), probably associated with industrial wastes, garbage deposition, urban runoff, and domestic sewage contributions. The mortality of T. viscana was significant for more than 85% of the samples (mean mortality = 70.3 ± 26.0%; n = 23), but it was not significantly correlated with PAH and metal concentrations. On the other side, domestic sewage contributions and eutrophication seem to play a relevant role in sediment toxicity. Actually, the toxicity observed in the tests seems to be due to the simultaneous influence of multiple toxicants and their combined effects on the organisms. Such stressors may include not only metals, PAH, and eutrophication but also chemicals not evaluated in this study, such as hormones, pharmaceuticals and personal care compounds, perfluorocompounds, detergents, and others.

Determination of metals in estuarine fishes in a metropolitan region of the coastal zone of the Brazilian Amazon

The aim of the present study was to determine concentrations of cadmium, copper, chromium, manganese and iron in fishes in the São Marcos (SMB), São Jose (SJB) and Arraial (AB) Bays. Metal concentrations were determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Mean Cd and Cr levels were above the permissible limits set by different international or national guidelines in all three bays, whereas copper levels were well below the maximum acceptable limit. High concentrations of iron were found in all species analyzed, whereas high concentrations of manganese were found, especially in specimens caught in SJB. Spatial analysis indicated significant differences among the elements investigated. Copper was correlated more with SMB and AB as well as the species Macrodon ancylodon (carnivore) and Sciades herzbergii (omnivore). Cadmium and iron were strongly associated with AB and SJB, while manganese was only associated with SJB, mainly in carnivorous and herbivorous species.

The effect of mask fit test on the association between the concentration of metals in biological samples and the results of time-weighted average personal exposure: A study on Japanese male welders

OBJECTIVES

The mask fit test confirms whether the wearing condition of the wearer's face and the facepiece of the respirators are used appropriately. This study aimed to examine whether the results of the mask fit test affect the association between the concentration of metals related to welding fumes in biological samples and the results of time-weighted average (TWA) personal exposures.

METHODS

A total of 94 male welders were recruited. Blood and urine samples were obtained from all participants to measure the metal exposure levels. Using personal exposure measurements, the 8-h TWA (8 h-TWA) of respirable dust, TWA of respirable Mn, and 8-h TWA of respirable Mn were calculated. The mask fit test was performed using the quantitative method specified in the Japanese Industrial Standard T8150:2021.

RESULTS

Fifty-four participants (57%) passed the mask fit test. Only in the Fail group of the mask fit test, it was observed that blood Mn concentrations be positively associated with the results of TWA personal exposure after adjusting for multivariate factors (8-h TWA of respirable dust; coefficient, 0.066; standard error (SE), 0.028; P = 0.018, TWA of respirable Mn: coefficient, 0.048; SE, 0.020; P = 0.019, 8 h-TWA of respirable Mn: coefficient, 0.041; SE, 0.020; P = 0.041).

CONCLUSIONS

The results clarify that welders with high concentrations of welding fumes in their breathing air zone are exposed to dust and Mn if there is leaking air owing to the lack of fitness between respirators and the wearer's face when using human samples in Japan.

Associations between co-exposure to multiple metals and renal function: a cross-sectional study in Guangxi, China

The association between co-exposure to multiple metals and renal function is poorly understood. We aimed to evaluate the individual and joint effects of metal exposure on renal function in this study. We performed a cross-sectional study including 5828 participants in Guangxi, China, in 2019. Urine concentrations of 17 metals were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Logistic regression model and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were applied to investigate the association of individual metal exposure with renal dysfunction. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to assess the co-exposure effects of the metals. Participants with the highest quartile of urinary Cu were at 1.84-fold (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.20-2.87) increased risk of renal dysfunction compared with the lowest quartile. The highest quartiles of urinary Sr, Cs, V, Ba, and Se were associated with 0.27-fold (95% CI: 0.17-0.43), 0.33 (95% CI: 0.19-0.53), 0.41 (95% CI: 0.25-0.65), 0.58 (95% CI: 0.36-0.90), and 0.33 (95% CI: 0.19-0.56) decreased risk of renal dysfunction compared with their lowest quartile, respectively. Furthermore, urinary Ba and Cu were non-linearly correlated with renal dysfunction. The WQS analysis showed that mixed metal exposure was inversely associated with renal dysfunction (OR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.35-0.62), and Sr accounted for the largest weight (52.2%), followed by Cs (32.3%) in the association. Moreover, we observed a potential interaction between Cu, Cs, and Ba for renal dysfunction in BKMR model. Exposure to Se, Sr, Cs, V, and Ba is associated with decreased risk of renal dysfunction, whereas an increased risk is associated with Cu exposure. Co-exposure to these metals is negatively associated with renal dysfunction, and Sr and Cs are the main contributors to the associations.

Application of nano remediation of mine polluted in acid mine drainage water using machine learning model

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is the term used to describe drainage from coal mines with high sulfur-bearing rocks. The oxidative weathering of metal sulfides leads to AMD. The acidic environment corrodes more harmful compounds in the soil, which is spread throughout the working area. One such significant metal is copper, which is extracted in massive quantities from ores rich in sulfide. A copper-extraction resin might be created by combining diatomaceous earth (DE) particles with polyethyleneimine (PEI), which is shown to have great selectivity and affinity for copper. In this effort, PEI-DE particles' copper absorption level was examined by using synthetic and actual acid mine drainage samples at varied pH values. The findings of the copper uptake particles have been examined through the Support Vector Machine (SVM) model. Using the n-fold 14 cross-validation approach, the quantities of parameters and C are estimated to be 0.001 and 0.01, respectively. The SVM analysis was correct, and the findings indicated that copper could bind to the material efficiently and preferentially at pH 4. Subsequent water elution studies at a pH value of 1 confirmed the pH-reliant interaction between dissolved Cu and PEI by demonstrating full release of the adsorbed Cu. In this research, the copper absorption of PEI-DE particles from synthetic and genuine AMD specimens was studied based on several pH conditions. The findings suggest that copper may attach to the material effectively and preferentially at pH 4. Studies of filtering water at pH1 later confirmed that all of the adsorbed Cu was released. This shows that the interaction between PEI and dissolved Cu depends on PH.

Concentration and mobility of trace elements (Li, Ba, Sr, Ag, Hg, B) and macronutrients (Ca, Mg, K) in soil-orchid system on different bedrock types

The mobility of chemical elements in the soil-orchid system has been poorly studied. The aim of this study is to evaluate the uptake and mobility of several trace (Li, Ba, Sr, Ag, Hg, and B) and macronutrients (Ca, Mg, and K) in the orchid Anacamptis morio (L.) R.M.Bateman, Pridgeon & M.W.Chase from soils in western Serbia. The sampling sites are characterized by three different bedrock types-cherts, limestones, and serpentines, which are the source of the significant chemical differences in the elemental status of the soil and plant tissues. The four-step Community Bureau of Reference sequential extraction procedure was used to determine the distribution of fractions and predict their potential phytoavailability. The orchid and soil samples were analyzed for total elemental content analysis using ICP-OES. The greatest potential for plant availability was determined for Ba and Sr, representing about 80% of the total soil content. More than 40% of Li in the soils was found to be potentially phytoavailable. Significant correlations were found between the total content of Li, B, and Sr in soils. Between 38 and 60% of Li content and more than 80% of Ba and Sr content were determined to be potentially phytoavailable by sequential analysis. The highest bioconcentration factor (> 1) was determined in the case of B and Sr for all orchid organs, while translocation factor for Li was highest in tubers and leaves. The studied elements were mainly stored in tubers and roots, indicating the exclusion strategy of A. morio as a metal tolerance mechanism. The data obtained showed significant differences in metal content in soils and plants originating from sites with different parent materials, suggesting that bedrock type and associated soil properties are important factors that determine chemical element mobility and uptake.

Geochemistry of trace metals in surface sediments from the continental slope of the states of Sergipe and Alagoas, Northeastern Brazil

Geochemical analyses were used to determine the origin and identify the main factors that lead to the metal trace distribution on the surface sediments from the continental slope of Sergipe in Brazil. Sediment samples were collected during the dry and rainy periods, from 36 sampling points distributed at water depths from 400 to 3000 m. In general, no effect of seasonality was observed on the metal concentrations and no significant differences were observed between the depth ranges. The correlation analysis indicated the continental origin as the most predominant, followed by authigenic deposition. Anthropogenic enrichment was not noted, nor was the possibility of adverse aquatic biota effects. The results made it possible to understand the contribution of rivers in the transport and transfer of particulate matter to the coastal region, in addition to providing new information on the content of trace metals in tropical Atlantic sediments.

Chemical Elements, Flavor Chemicals, and Nicotine in Unused and Used Electronic Cigarettes Aged 5-10 Years and Effects of pH

The concentrations of elements/metals, nicotine, flavor chemicals and acids were compared in the e-liquids of unused and used first-generation electronic cigarettes (ECs) that were stored for 5-10 years. Metal analysis was performed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy; nicotine and flavor chemical analyses were performed using gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. Of the 22 elements analyzed, 10 (aluminum, chromium, copper, iron, lead, nickel, selenium, silicon, tin, zinc) were often found in the e-liquids. Five elements had the highest average concentrations: copper (1161.6 mg/L), zinc (295.8 mg/L), tin (287.6 mg/L), nickel (71.1 mg/L), and lead (50.3 mg/L). Nicotine concentrations were always lower than label concentrations indicated. Of the 181 flavor chemicals analyzed, 11 were detected in at least one sample, with hydroxyacetone being present in all samples. In used products, some flavor chemicals appeared to be by-products of heating. E-liquids with the highest concentrations of acids and the lowest pH levels also had the highest concentrations of elements/metals. Metal concentrations in e-liquids increased after use in some products, and some metal concentrations, such as nickel, were high enough to be a health concern. Leachates from discarded ECs could contribute toxic metals/chemicals to the environment, supporting the need for better regulation of atomizer design, composition, and disposal.

Kindergarten indoor dust metal(loid) exposure associates with elevated risk of anemia in children

Exposure to metals and metalloids in indoor dust is associated with adverse health effects in young children, but there is limited evidence for an association with anemia, which is at high risk in children. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between exposure to multiple metal(loid)s in indoor dust in kindergartens and the risk of anemia in children. In 2021, 2165 children from 25 kindergartens in eastern China were included in the study and had their hemoglobin (Hb) measured. Indoor dust samples were collected from the children's kindergartens, and the concentrations of 11 metals and metalloids in the samples were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The daily exposure dose (DED) of dust was used to assess the risk of metal(loid) exposure in the children. The results showed that of the 2165 children with available data, 351 (16.2 %) met the WHO definition of anemia. In multiple linear regression and logistic regression analyses, we found that for each quartile of DED increase in Cd inhalation, child Hb levels decreased by 2.703 g/L (95 % CI: -4.055, -1.351), and the risk of anemia increased 1.602-fold (95 % CI: 1.087, 2.360). Mn ingestion was associated with increased odds of anemia [odds ratio (OR) = 1.760 (95 % CI: 1.217, 2.544)]. Interaction analysis indicated that metal(loid)s exposure effects were modified by child sex, age, and body mass index (BMI). Cluster analysis found that children at high risk of metal(loid) exposure in the school environment tended to have lower Hb levels and higher prevalence of anemia compared with those at low risk, although this was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that child school exposure to metal(loid)s in indoor dust is associated with an increased risk of developing anemia in children, modified by child sex, age, and BMI.

On-road vehicular emission characterization from the road-tunnel measurements in India: Morphology, emission factors, and sources

In India, there is very limited data on vehicular emission characterization in real-world driving conditions and the contribution of non-exhaust vehicular emissions to ambient particulate matter (PM) is still unanswered. Furthermore, there are no real-world emission factors (EFs) for the PM constituents. Thus, this study aims to characterize the trace elements and metals, and black carbon (BC) in PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ from the light-duty vehicles (LDVs) and mixed vehicular fleet with significant contribution of heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) through road-tunnel measurements. Real-world EFs were estimated for the measured PM chemical constituents. Further, source apportionment was carried out to find the plausible sources and their contribution to total PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ road traffic emissions. Air pollutant and traffic measurements were conducted at two roadway tunnels: Eastern Freeway tunnel (FT; only LDVs) and Kamshet-I tunnel (KT; 80% LDVs & 20% HDVs) in Mumbai, India covering both peak and off-peak traffic hours. Major elements (Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, and Na) constitute 90─93% of total measured elemental concentrations in both PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ road traffic emissions. Overall, the elemental concentrations were higher for the HDV-dominant fleet than the LDV-fleet for both PM_2.5 and PM₁₀. Similarly, BC was higher for the HDV-dominant fleet which is corroborated by the morphological analysis. The measured BC, trace elements and metals EFs in this study were higher than those reported than previous road tunnel studies with similar vehicle composition indicating the presence of high-emitting vehicles in this study. The dominant proportion of PM_2.5 road traffic emissions was from the tailpipe (52%) followed by brake wear (30%) and vehicular driven resuspended road dust (18%). Whilst, resuspended road dust (63%) was identified as the major source of PM₁₀ traffic emissions followed by vehicular exhaust (28%) and brake wear (9%). With the potential increase in the share of electric and hybrid vehicles in the vehicular fleet, the relative contribution of non-exhaust emissions to the airborne PM will be more significant. Hence, there is an imminent need to regulate non-exhaust vehicular emissions.

Environmental quality and ecotoxicity of sediments from the lower Salado River basin (Santa Fe, Argentina) on amphibian larvae

The lower Salado River basin receive agricultural, industrial and domestic waste water. So, the aim was to evaluate the quality of three sampling sites that belong to the Salado River basin (S1: Cululú stream; S2: Salado River, at Esperanza City, S3: Salado River at Santo Tomé City) based on physicochemical parameters, metals and pesticides analyses and ecotoxicity on Rhinella arenarum larvae. R. arenarum larvae (Gosner Stage -GS- 25) were chronically exposed (504h) to complex matrixes of surface water and sediment samples of each site for the determination of the survival rate. Biomarkers of oxidative stress, neurotoxicity and genotoxicity were analyzed in R. arenarum larvae (GS. 25) after exposure (96h) to the complex matrix of water and sediment. The water quality index showed a marginal quality for all sites, influenced mainly by low dissolved oxygen, high total suspended solid, phosphate, nitrite, conductivity, Pb, Cr and Cu levels. Metal concentrations were higher in sediment than in water samples (˜34-35000 times). In total, thirty different pesticides were detected in all water and sediment samples, S1 presented the greatest variety (26). Glyphosate and AMPA were detected in sediments from all sites, being higher in S3. N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) and atrazine were detected in all water samples. Greatest mortality was observed in larvae exposed to samples from S1 from 288h (43.3%), reaching a maximum value of 50% at 408h. Oxidative stress and genotoxicity were observed in larvae exposed to S1 and S3 matrix samples. Neurotoxicity was observed in larvae exposed to all matrix samples. The integrated biomarker response index showed that larvae exposed to S1 and S3 were the most affected. According to the physicochemical data and the ecotoxicity assessment, this important river basin is significantly degraded and may represent a risk to aquatic biota, especially for R. arenarum larvae.

Chemical characterization of PM10 and PM2.5 combusted firecracker particles during Diwali of Lucknow City, India: air-quality deterioration and health implications

Urban air pollution is a growing menace leading to human discomfort, increased hospitalizations, morbidity, and mortality. This study deals with deteriorated air quality due to firecracker bursting during Diwali in Lucknow. Inhalable particulates and gaseous pollutants were monitored during Diwali 2020 using air samplers. Elements, ions, and surface morphology of particles were analyzed using ICP-MS, ion chromatograph, and SEM-EDX, respectively. PM₁₀, PM_2.5, SO₂, and NO₂ were 558, 352, 44, and 86 μg/m³ during Diwali night and 233, 101, 17, and 40 μg/m³ on pre-Diwali night while 241, 122, 24, and 43 μg/m³ on Diwali day. Concentrations surged for PM₁₀: 139% and 132%, PM_2.5: 249% and 189%, SO₂: 159% and 83%, and NO₂: 115% and 100% on Diwali night compared to pre-Diwali night and corresponding Diwali day, respectively. Al, K, Ba, and B showed dominance in PM₁₀ whereas Zn, Al, Ba, and K in PM_2.5 on Diwali night. The order of metal abundance in PM_2.5 was Cd < Co < Ag < As < Cr < Ni < Cu < Bi < Pb < Mn < Sr < Fe < B < Zn < Al < Ba < K. Cations NH₄⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, and anions F^-, Cl^-, NO₃^-, Br^-, NO₂^-, SO₄^-2, PO₄^3- showed a 2-8 fold increase on Diwali night relative to pre-Diwali night. Average metal concentrations varied by 2.2, 1.6, and 0.09 times on Diwali than pre-Diwali in residential, commercial, and industrial areas, respectively. PM₁₀ concentration increased by 458% and 1140% while PM_2.5, 487%, and 2247% than respective NAAQS and WHO standards. Tiny firecracker particles vary in toxicity as compared to vehicular emissions and have enhanced bioavailability leading to severe threat in terms of LRI, COPD, and atherosclerosis for city dwellers. It is imperative to recognize the present status of ambient air quality and implement regulatory strategies for emission reduction.

Systemic Essential Metal and Metalloid Levels in Patients with Benign Breast Disease and Breast Cancer

The objective of the present study is evaluation of serum and hair levels of essential metals and metalloids in women with benign breast disease and breast cancer in order to define similar and distinct patterns that may mediate the link between these pathologies. A total of 310 adult women aged 20-80 years old were enrolled in the present study. Of those, 103 patients had benign (fibrocystic) breast disease, 107 patients had breast cancer (stage II), and 100 women were healthy and with absence of breast pathology. Trace metal and metalloid levels in hair and serum were evaluated by inductively coupled argon plasma mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS). The data demonstrate that breast cancer patients were characterized by significantly higher hair Cr and V levels, as well as reduced Cu and Mn content as compared to both benign breast disease patients and controls. In contrast, serum Cu levels in women with breast cancer exceeded those in the controls and benign breast disease cases. Patients with both benign and malignant breast tumors were characterized by lower serum Mn levels as compared to the control values. Serum Cu/Zn and especially Cu/Mn were found to be significantly increased in cancer patients. Significantly reduced hair and serum Se levels were noted only in women with fibrocystic disease. Based on the analysis of two biosamples, it is proposed that malignant breast tumor development is associated with the reduction of systemic Mn and Zn levels, and a concomitant elevation of Cu concentrations.

Seasonal and Spatial Variability of PM2.5 Concentration, and Associated Metal(loid) Content in the Toluca Valley, Mexico

This study provides evidence of the seasonal and spatial variation of metal(lloid)s in particulate matter minor to 2.5 microns (PM_2.5) in the Toluca Valley Metropolitan Area (TVMA), the fifth largest urban center in Mexico. Four sites were sampled between 2013 and 2014, which included urban and industrial areas, in the dry-cold (November-February) and dry-hot (March-May) seasons; PM_2.5 was collected using high- and medium-volume samplers. Metal(lloid) concentrations in PM_2.5 were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry (ICP‒MS). The highest 24-hour PM_2.5 concentration in the northern area was observed, and the PM_2.5 concentrations were independent of the season. Five metal(lloid)s with a recovery percentage above 80% were considered to be reported (Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Sb). The maximum concentrations of metal(lloid)s were observed during the dry-cold season, and concentrations were up to one hundred or thousand fold with respect to the dry-hot season. The 24-hour PM_2.5 and metal(lloid) concentrations exceeded national and international guidelines to protect population health.

Legacy metal contamination is reflected in the fish gut microbiome in an urbanised estuary

Estuaries are critical habitats subject to a range of stressors requiring effective management. Microbes are gaining recognition as effective environmental indicators, however, the response of host associated communities to stressors remains poorly understood. We examined microbial communities from seawater, sediments and the estuarine fish Pelates sexlineatus, in Australia's largest urbanised estuary, and hypothesised that anthropogenic contamination would be reflected in the microbiology of these sample types. The human faecal markers Lachno3 and HF183 were not detected, indicating negligible influence of sewage, but a gradient in copy numbers of the class 1 integron (intI-1), which is often used as a marker for anthropogenic contamination, was observed in sediments and positively correlated with metal concentrations. While seawater communities were not strongly driven by metal contamination, shifts in the diversity and composition of the fish gut microbiome were observed, with statistical links to levels of metal contamination (F_{2, 21} = 1.536, p < 0.01). Within the fish gut microbiome, we further report increased relative abundance of amplicon sequence variants (ASVs; single inferred DNA sequences obtained in sequencing) identified as metal resistant and potentially pathogenic genera, as well as those that may have roles in inflammation. These results demonstrate that microbial communities from distinct habitats within estuarine systems have unique response to stressors, and alterations of the fish gut microbiome may have implications for the adaptation of estuarine fish to legacy metal contamination.

Structure, mechanism, and toxicity in antibiotics metal complexation: Recent advances and perspectives

Antibiotic-metal complexes (AMCs) formed by antibiotics and metal ions have attracted considerable attentions in recent years. Although different removal methods for AMCs have been reported in the literature, very few investigations have focused on the mechanisms and toxic effects of antibiotic-metal coordination. This review briefly describes the structural characteristics of various commonly used antibiotics and the coordination mechanisms with metal ions. Considering the complexity of the real environment, various environmental factors affecting AMC formation are highlighted. The effects of AMCs on microbial community structure and the role of metal ions in influencing resistant genes from the molecular perspective are of interest within this work. The toxicities and mechanisms of AMCs on different species of biota are also discussed. These findings underline the need for more targeted detection and analysis methods and more suitable toxicity markers to verify the combination of antibiotics with metal ions and reveal environmental toxicities in future. This review presents an innovative idea that antibiotics combined with metal ions will change the toxicity and environmental behavior of antibiotics.

Oxidative potential induced by metal-organic interaction from PM2.5 in simulated biological fluids

The oxidative potential (OP) of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) has recently been proposed as a metric that may prove more indicative of human health effects than the routinely measured PM_2.5 concentration. Observations of exposure to PM_2.5 show most OP are originated from the contribution of transition metals and organics, but the pertinent coupling mechanisms are unclear. Here, we report laboratory observations in four simulated biological fluids (i.e., simulated saliva, surrogate lung fluid, artificial lysosomal fluid, and synthetic serum) that reveal OP of PM_2.5 are significantly induced by prevalent metal complexes formed with nitrogen- and oxygen-containing compounds in low acid environments. Analyses of mass spectra and interaction factors indicate that organic-metal mixture effect in PM_2.5, leading to synergistic, additive to antagonistic effects, which may serve as the dominant mechanism for this OP formation. A metal-organic mixtures origin for OP could explain why PM_2.5 emission controls should emphasize the reduction of key toxic components, rather than just PM_2.5 mass concentration control. SYNOPSIS: This study has investigated the oxidative potential of inhaled atmospheric particulate matter (PM) in four simulated biological fluids, which highlight the importance of metal-organic complexes to the formation of oxidative potential (OP).

Yesterday's contamination-A problem of today? The case study of discontinued historical contamination of the Mrežnica River (Croatia)

The remnants of historical industrial contamination can be detected in many aquatic ecosystems worldwide even at present time. Mrežnica is a river in Croatia that has been, for more than a hundred years, continually exposed to effluents of various industries, which have, in modern time, mostly ceased to operate. Our aim was to establish the level of current contamination and pollution of the Mrežnica river-water and sediments. The study of river contamination at three sites (reference site; site nearby former cotton industry facility in Duga Resa - DRF; industrial zone of Karlovac town - KIZ) in three sampling campaigns (May 2020, April and September 2021) encompassed analyses of physico-chemical water parameters, screening of 369 pesticides, measurement of metal (loid) concentrations in the sediments, and in the dissolved and particulate phases of the river-water. The sediment pollution was assessed through the analyses of total bacteria abundance (by targeting 16S rRNA genes), and their associated metal resistance genes (cnrA, pbrT and czcD) and class 1 integrons (intl1). At the DRF site, industrial organic contaminants that can be traced to textile production were detected (dye and nylon components), as well as increased levels of some metals bound to suspended particulate matter and sediments. At the most downstream KIZ site, occasional high level of industrial herbicide neburon was measured in the river-water, and metal contamination of suspended particulate matter and sediments was evident. Although, based on the comparison with legislation and literature data, the level of contamination was rather mild, the effects on microbial communities were unquestionable, confirmed by increased abundance of the czcD gene at DRF site and the intI1 gene at both industrially impacted sites. Obtained results indicated long-term sediment retention of some industrial contaminants at the places of historical freshwater contamination, and, thus, the necessity for their monitoring even after the termination of contamination sources.

Mining minerals and critical raw materials from bittern: Understanding metal ions fate in saltwork ponds

Seawater represents a potential resource for raw materials extraction. Although NaCl is the most representative mineral extracted other valuable compounds such as Mg, Li, Sr, Rb and B and elements at trace level (Cs, Co, In, Sc, Ga and Ge) are also contained in this "liquid mine". Most of them are considered as Critical Raw Materials by the European Union. Solar saltworks, providing concentration factors of up-to 20 to 40, offer a perfect platform for the development of minerals and metal recovery schemes taking benefit of the concentration and purification achieved along the evaporation saltwork ponds. However, the geochemistry of these elements in this environment has not been yet thoroughly evaluated. Their knowledge could enable the deployment of technologies capable to achieve the recovery of valuable minerals. The high ionic strengths expected (0.5-7 mol/kg) and the chemical complexity of the solutions imply that only numerical geochemical codes, as PHREEQC, and the use of Pitzer model to estimate the activity coefficients of the different species in solution can be adopted to provide valuable description of the systems. In the present work, for the first time, PHREEQC Pitzer code database was extended to include the target minor and trace elements using Trapani saltworks (Sicily, Italy) as a case study system. The model was able to predict: i) the purity in halite and the major impurities contained, mainly Ca, Mg and sulphate species; ii) the fate of minor components as B, Sr, Cs, Co, Ge and Ga along the evaporation ponds. The results obtained pose a fundamental step in critical raw materials mining from seawater brine, for process intensification and combination with desalination.

Assessment of Children's Metal Exposure via Hand Wipe, Outdoor Soil and Indoor Dust and Their Associations with Blood Biomarkers

The soil environment contributes considerably to human exposure to metals. This study aimed to comprehensively compare children's exposure to soil metals using different sampling approaches (i.e., hand wipe, indoor dust and outdoor soil) and assessment strategies, combing the method of external exposure evaluation and the correlation with internal biomarkers. Environmental exposure samples (hand wipe, outdoor soil and indoor dust), blood samples and child-specific exposure factors were simultaneously collected for 60 children aged 3 to 12 years from an area of northwestern China. Eight typical toxic metals were analyzed. Results showed that metal levels in hand wipes were associated with children's age, years of residency and the ground types of the play areas. Hand-to-mouth contact was an important pathway for children's metal exposure, with the corresponding oral exposure cancer risk to Cr already exceeding the maximum acceptable level. In comparison, metal concentrations in hand wipes were one to seven times higher than those in outdoor soil and indoor dust. Even greater discrepancies were found for the estimated exposure dose, which could lead to differences of several to dozens of times. In addition, Pb, Mn and Cr in hand wipes were significantly correlated with those in blood, whereas no relationships were found with soil and dust. This study indicates that the selection of different sampling and assessing strategies could lead to great differences in children metal exposure outcomes. It also suggests that hand wipe, which could reflect the true and integrated exposure level and the individual difference, serves as a better matrix to assess children's metal exposure compared to soil and dust. Further studies should standardize the sampling method for hand wipes and verify its applicability for other age groups.

Levels of trace elements in human hair samples of adolescents living near petrochemical plants

The aim of the study is a comparative analysis to investigate human hair metal profiles of adolescents residing near petrochemical plants (Sicily, Italy). We selected the small town of Augusta, Gela, and Pace del Mela, and a control area made up of the towns characterized by low anthropogenic activity. Twenty trace elements were measured in samples of scalp hair from adolescents (11-14 years old) of both genders. Hair samples were cleaned using a rigorous cleaning method, mineralized, and processed for analyses by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In industrial sites, zinc was always the most abundant element, ranging from186 to 217 μg g^-1. Following zinc, the elements Al, Ba, Cu, Fe, and Sr were in the range 1-20 μg g^-1. The remaining elements had concentrations < 1 μg g^-1. The comparison with adolescents living in suburban area highlighted that As, Ba, Mn, Sr, U, and V have the highest median concentrations in an industrial location. An industrial factor (As, Mn, Sr, U, and V) and an urban factor (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, and Sb) were distinguished by the multivariate statistical analysis between a cohort residing in urban and industrial areas. Statistically significant differences (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.05) between the genders were found for Ba, Mn, Ni, Sr, and V in all industrial sites with median concentrations higher in females' hair than males'. The data confirm that the study areas are heavily affected by industrial and urban emissions of metals and metalloids, representing a potential hazard to the local population.

Boron and lithium behaviour in river waters under semiarid climatic conditions

Boron (B) and Lithium (Li) concentrations were studied in the Platani river, one of the most important catchments of South-Central Sicily which is under semiarid climatic conditions for roughly eight months to a year. In this area, evaporites result in potential B and Li sources for surface waters. Results from river waters have measured ionic strength values between 0.1 and 4.54 M. B and Li distributions in these waters were studied in colloidal (CF, extracted by ultrafiltration from the 0.45 μm filtrate) and total dissolved (TDF) fractions and in fractions extracted from corresponding riverbed sediments, according to changes of the B/Li ratio. In river waters, CF and TDF showed very similar B/Li values, suggesting that only negligible fractionation occurs between Li and B in the aqueous phase. Similar evidence was observed between B/Li values in TDF and the labile sediment fraction, whereas an inverse relationship arose between B/Li values in TDF and in the easily reducible sediment fraction. This relationship indicates that Mn oxy-hydroxides preferentially react with aqueous B species relative to Li at the riverbed sediment interface. The extent of the B-Mn oxy-hydroxide reactions is influenced by the ionic strength, so that only B/Li values below 4 are measured in river waters with ionic strength values above 0.5 M. Comparing B/Li and ionic strength values measured in the Platani river with those from oxic brines worldwide, the same preferential B removal relative to Li is observed. This evidence suggests that B is removed as positively-charged borate ion-pairs, formed in the aqueous phase under higher ionic strength conditions, reacting with negatively charged surfaces of Mn oxy-hydroxides. The observed B reactivity relative to Li could be exploited to bring down the B excess from natural or waste waters, allowing the natural reactions with Mn oxy-hydroxides to take place under natural conditions.
